Birthday Cake Anyone? Welcome to September, my favourite month of the year! Not only is it the beginning of spring when the air is crisp, sun is shining and the water is a perfect shade of blue, making it the best time of year to be in the Whitsundays. It is also the month that brings around our third birthday!!!

“How do you do it, Bec?” would have to be the question I get asked the most. The answer is always the same, “I Don’t!” I am lucky to have the most amazing team of creative, loyal and passionate people around me, who together with our clients have created a monthly lifestyle publication that has become apart of the community, and to say I am proud would be an understatement. “The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” Phil Jackson To celebrate any milestone in business is a big thing these days. We have all faced some kind of adversity or set back, which in turn has brought about change. Whether that change has been heartbreaking or lifesaving, I hope like me it has worked out in the end. Happy Birthday to us all! Enjoy September

I learnt to fight and talk my way out of anything One of the strangest places I have slept is in an underground opal mine in Coober Pedy.

Our favourite time of the day was meal time around a huge table all swapping stories.

Many people know I have been in media sales for the last 22 years. Some people would know I recently purchased McGee Marketing and changed the name to Bright Light Marketing. Most people don’t know I grew up in a family of eight children on a cane farm. Learning to survive a large, wild family has made me tough and resilient. I was smack in the middle of my four brothers. I learnt to fight and talk my way out of anything…but I still had that shy edge that many country people have. I was the practical joker. My dad loved stealing food from our plate when we left the table. He did it all the time and as kids we hated it. One day I decided to get even. My dad loved marshmallow. My brother Jason made a marshmallow rabbit at school. It was the perfect opportunity. I filled the rabbit with a whole packet of laxatives and left it out on the table. My dad ate the whole rabbit! My brothers and I were in stitches when we realized he ate it all. He had to stay close to the toilet for two days. We thought it was hilarious!

Most people wouldn’t know that before Elders Insurance, I was an electrician and that I’m a secret adrenaline junkie. I have abseiled 90 metres, been caving, white water rafted, bungee jumped, walked the Great Wall of China, hiked to glaciers, fished for massive sport fish, flew a plane and scuba dived, just to name a few. I also love travelling and 4x4ing. There is nothing quite like camping for a month in Cape York, driving the Telegraph Track, navigating through the desert, driving Big Red in Birdsville or on a trip to Ayers Rock. One of the strangest places I have slept is in an underground opal mine in Coober Pedy. Best animal adventure was when I spotted dugong off Keppel Island while fishing and swam with them and was amazed at how calm they are.

I am originally from Parramatta NSW… A Westy! And still an Eels supporter. I have been In Airlie Beach for 5 years and spent 25 years in Mackay. I bought my first home in Marian and was married for 25 years and also had my Landrover for 25 years (So I guess I only like things for 25 years haha). One of my first jobs in Mackay was a foster Mum in a halfway house for kids and at one stage we had 8 kids at once. I say “The more… the merrier” and our favourite time of the day was meal time around a huge table all swapping stories. Now I am a grandmother (Nonny) to two gorgeous girls. helen, goodness gracious

Adventure awaits and life is short – get out there! Steve, elders insurance mackay

Want $500,000 profit in just 10 years? LET INFLATION, LOW INTEREST AND HIGH TAX BUY A NEW HOUSE AND COST YOU NOTHING

inflation

Whilst I always encourage clients to pay off their home mortgage with a principal and interest loan, there is an increasing argument to justify buying investment properties with an interest only facility. This strategy will ONLY work if inflation causes the dollar value of the property to increase. All capital cities in Australia have seen considerable price increases in the last 12 months. This time last year I predicted Brisbane house prices to increase by 18% in the next 3 years. This will now prove to be conservative, with a possible increase of 100% in the next ten years. If this seems excessive, remember that in 1972 the average price of a house in Brisbane was $15k, the average wage $60 per week and average rent $20 per week. Using a real life example of one of my executive Brisbane homes at $485k, if my clients using equity, borrow 100% and if in the $80180k tax bracket can service the facility, pay rates insurance etc for a conservative outlay of $17.00 per week, or if in the top tax bracket enjoy a surplus. Imagine – buy a house today for $500k, outlay nothing, contribute nothing and sell in 10 years for a million!

interest rates

If it sounds extreme, just remember that in 1955 a McDonalds burger cost 0.15 cents!!!!

Social media so what?

Two painful little words for the small business owner. ‘social media’. Should we? Shouldn’t we? What will we talk about? No one wants to hear what we have to say do they? What if someone posts a negative comment about our business for everyone to see? Social Media is now the number 1 activity on the web. Whilst some businesses are still reluctant to get their teeth into social media, the outcomes for your business can include a great insight into your customers. Think of it as an opportunity to conduct research and engage with your audience. Ignoring this online conversation is to ignore an opportunity to better understand your market. So what an earth are you going to post? The content breakdown is 30% self-promotion, 30% promoting others (perhaps business you work with or supply to) 30% value, such as tips and advice, and 10% fluff (cute cat videos). Example, what are the five most asked questions you get asked in your business? Record yourself answering them to the camera or smart phone, and upload. Congratulations, you have created valuable original content for your customers. Don’t feel that you must have all original content however. Source and repost content that your audience will also find value in. Websites such as www.swayy.co or www.scoop.it can assist with this. Don’t assume that once you have done published them they are obsolete! Repurpose your content. Put these key points into a PDF document, set up a tab on the top of your Facebook page and offer this tips in exchange for your customers email address. This will grow your database, which should always be the goal, as we don’t own Facebook or any other social media platform, or our audience who have liked us. Lastly, don’t be scared of negative comments, consider it an opportunity to show how focused you are on your customer service policy. Not only will you be taking a negative situation and turn it into a positive, you will be doing it publicly. Other clients and potential clients can view how committed your business is to customer service. Would you like some help with your social media strategy? Cash Management Cash flow is the money you have coming in from income and going out for expenses. Good cash flow management will ensure you always have money available for paying your debts when they are due. Take Ben and Emily, they had a small business but didn’t seem to be getting ahead, a review of their figures showed wages were too high for the sales they were making so there was never enough cash left for loan repayments. After some discussions it turned out that on slow days employees were taking their time on jobs and therefore getting paid twice what it should have cost. Once we identified that and got it under control, cash flow improved. Even profitable businesses can fail if cash flow is not managed properly. If you don’t have enough money available to pay your lenders or suppliers, banks may foreclose and suppliers may cut your credit. There are many areas in your business that can impact on your cash flow. It is important to understand how customer payment terms, supplier payment terms, loan payments, future spending decisions and other items can affect your cash flow. Many areas of your business can have an effect on how much cash you have available. By controlling your expenses and increasing your profits, you can improve your cash flow. Holding too much stock will tie up cash and increase storage and insurance costs. Practicing good stock control will keep stock at efficient levels. Issue invoices when work is completed rather than wait until the end of the month. Follow up on overdue accounts and managing your debtors

GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS together with good credit policies will keep your cash coming in. You may also be able to negotiate longer payment terms with your suppliers. If you can get payment from your customers before you pay your suppliers, you will have zero out of pocket. Bank regularly so you have a better idea of your cash position. Using the right banking transaction products can have the money in your pocket sooner. Consider a mobile eftpos device, or investigate services to take payments over the phone or online. Review your pricing, use an advertising campaign or improve your customer service to see if you can increase profits. Think about reducing overtime and controlling overheads. Make your business more environmentally friendly and you may reduce costs such as electricity and water bills and minimise wastage. Remember to clearly communicate your policies on these items to your employees. Improving your management and financial skills can help you improve your cash flow and if you’re not sure seek advice from a professional accountant, who can assess your individual situation.

YOUR SUCCESS IS OUR BUSINESS At Synergy Professional Accounting Solutions it’s all about you, we believe that working together with our clients achieves better results. We listen to what you want from your business and what you expect from us to help you achieve that. Listening and making suggestions about how we can help is what we do best, our focus is on you and your business. We are not traditional accountants, if you want us to come to you we will and we don’t charge for every phone call or fax in fact we don’t even keep time sheets. Each project you require is priced up front so you always know how much it will cost. We will update you regularly as well as introduce you to others if you feel there may be a benefit and we can think outside the box for solutions for clients both small and large. This means that as well as providing the full range of standard accounting services, we also offer more customised services to meet our clients' individual needs. At Synergy we're more than accountants. We're like your in-house chief financial officer providing strategic advice and business planning that will add value to your company and help you to improve business competitiveness. We start by really getting to know your business so that our advice is accurate, personalised and relevant. This helps us mentor and support your business management and deliver far more than just a bottom line figure. After thoroughly analysing your business we deliver reports that outline strategic opportunities; provide objective, independent analysis on major purchases or leases; and provide business plans with realistic funding and pricing options. We can assist with bank relationships, cash flow management, off-site financial management and risk management, or provide exit strategies if required. Synergy – working together – achieving results

HOW TO GET PAID QUICKER IN THE BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. The Queensland Government has proposed significant changes to the Building and Construction Industry Payments Act 2004 (“BCIPA”). The changes are expected to take effect on 1 September 2014.

With this date looming, Contractors should be aware of the 3 key changes: 1.The establishment of an Adjudication Registry within the Queensland Building and Construction Commission to administer the Act, monitor performance, and appoint adjudicators. 2.Amended time frames for various actions including:a. The time in which a payment claim can be made is reduced to 6 months (from 12 months) after the construction works were last carried out or the goods and services supplied (unless the contract provides otherwise); b.For ‘complex claims’ (being claims over $750,000, claims for latent conditions or time related costs), the time for a respondent to provide a payment schedule will be extended from 10 to 15 business days; c.The time for a respondent to provide an adjudication response will increase from 5 to 10 business days and up to 15 business days for complex claims; and d.The definition of ‘business days’ will exclude the 3 business days before Christmas and up to 10 business days after New Year’s Day. 3.The provision of additional information in the adjudication response so that respondents can now include additional reasons for withholding payment whether or not they were previously raised in the payment schedule. Contracts entered into before the amendments take effect will remain under the current BCIPA regime. However, after the new reforms are implemented, all adjudication applications must be made to the Adjudication Registry. McKays will be conducting a series of workshops to help businesses adapt to the new changes. To register your interest, e-mail us at contractor@mckayslaw.com. For further information please contact members of the Building and Construction Team on 4963 0888.

Allure Clinic

Richard, Krystal, Gillian, Blaine,

Often we take for granted the peace and serenity of living in Australia. We don’t go to sleep at night fearing an invasion of our home. We don’t think twice about walking down the road, or going to work.

Blaine has a passion for singing, a talent he discovered during high school, and has since performed in public. A stand out moment for him was a chance jam-session with Ed Sheeran.

After experiencing violence, hatred and horrific loss in Northern Ireland, Gillian Hogben is thankful to now be an Australian citizen. She left the troubles of Northern Ireland behind, in hope of a better life for her three sons, Blaine, Aaron and Luke.

“While I was living in Brisbane, my room-mate was close friends with Ed’s best friend. Ed was touring Australia at the time, and they were meeting up for lunch. Needless to say, I took the opportunity to head along, and we ended up playing a few songs together after lunch,” Blaine said.

After training in the UK as a registered nurse, Gillian moved to Australia in 1997, and continued her nursing career in Adelaide, before working at Mackay Base Hospital for five years. With her husband, Dr Richard Hogben, the couple founded Allure Aesthetic Rejuvenation Clinic. Both Richard and Gillian specialise in skin, and are passionate about reducing the severity of skin cancer, through regular mole scans and skin health checks. Richard’s interest in cosmetic medicine grew, and he strives to remain at the cutting edge of aesthetic medicine. Gillian’s son, Blaine Murphy, is an administration assistant with Allure, who is currently developing his knowledge to join the family business.

26 www.corelife.com.au

Krystal Rettke is training as a dermal therapist with Allure. The mother of three has the daily challenge of balancing her parenthood responsibilities with her career, but it’s a balance she loves. “I thrive on what I do at Allure, because I love what I do, and it doesn’t feel like work. I come home happy at the end of the day, and that extends to being a great mum for my kids. “There’s nothing more fulfilling than ensuring they are happy, and surrounded by encouragement and love,” Krystal said. For a revitalising transformation that feels fresh and natural, talk to the team at Allure Aesthetic Rejuvenation Clinic. They can help you to enhance the features that make you uniquely you.

toLove yourself The discovery of something that nourishes our soul and brings light and love into our lives is surely something we should make room for every day. Mickaylah Dean felt this sense of invigoration when she began her first two weeks of Hypoxi treatments. “As a client of Hypoxi in Brisbane, I felt such a change in myself in a short time. Having suffered low self-esteem as a young girl and a teenager, I started to discover what it was like to have self-love and confidence for the first time. “I loved how it made me feel, and I knew it was something I could do to help other women discover the same feeling,” Mickaylah said. She worked in a Hypoxi studio in Brisbane for five years, before her fiancé was accepted for an electrical apprenticeship position with Ergon. Mickaylah instantly enquired if she was able to start her own Hypoxi studio in Mackay, and was delighted to discover that the possibility was soon to become a reality. Hypoxi was developed in 1998 by an Austrian sports scientist, and has been proven as an effective method of reducing unwanted fat and cellulite, and can assist in toning, circulation and lymphatic drainage.

Mickaylah Dean

“A client we had in Brisbane lost 120cm from around her body, between her waist and her knees, which equated in a 45kg weight loss. Watching her come out of her shell was incredible. “This month marks seven years since I had my very first Hypoxi treatment, and it has transformed my life!” Within nine months of moving to Mackay Mickaylah and her fiancé married at Villa Botanica and travelled to Thailand for their honeymoon. Her most incredible holiday experience was on the island of Hawaii. “We hired a car on Maui and drove from one side of the island to the other, to a place called Hana. We woke at 2am to start the drive up to Haleakala National Park, 10,000 feet above sea level. “We were on top of the world! Literally above the clouds. It was freezing cold, and the air was thinner, we woke to see the sun rise from above the clouds. The journey will remain with me as one of the most amazing experiences I have been lucky enough to experience,” Mickaylah said. Love yourself, to love the world you live in. Life’s too short to live without love.

Karen & Daniel

Peak Body Mechanics

When something mechanical is broken we get a mechanic to fix it. It’s a simple theory that most of us grasp from a young age however, when it comes to the complexity of the human body, we often ignore the signs that indicate that something’s not right until things are ‘broken’. Aching muscles, joint and back pain, sports injuries and recurring headaches. Often we put the cause down to getting older, working or playing too hard; and we simply treat the symptoms with pain medication. But what if there was a way to actually treat the source of the problem? Peak Body Mechanics may have the solution. This hands-on approach recognises the important link between the different structures of your body and how they work together. As Dr. Karen Prince – Popovich and Daniel Popovich have discovered. It’s a way of assisting the body to perform at its peak. Karen knew at the age of 14 that she wanted to study Osteopathy and travelled from her home in New Caledonia to the UK to study at the world renowned European School of Osteopathy. These four years of studies included in depth anatomy, physiology, pathology, differential diagnosis and more. After graduating in 1990 she met Daniel Popovich and they soon moved to France where Karen’s osteopathy included children’s charity work treating disabilities such as cerebral palsy and autism. Her professional experience opened the door to provide a visa 28 www.corelife.com.au

sponsorship to Australia to work in Tasmania in 2004, and later the couple moved to Airlie Beach in 2008. Daniel left behind an intense career as a corporate development and strategy director, armed with a business and life coaching certificate and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, (NLP), licensed practitioner certificate; It wasn’t long before Daniel undertook further training initially as a SCENAR therapy professional and then musculoskeletal therapy. Since opening the original Osteopathy & SCENAR Clinic in 2008 now renamed Peak Body Mechanics, both Daniel and Karen have continued to update their combined skill sets with ongoing research and training. The name ‘Peak Body Mechanics’ reflects their holistic approach in assisting the body to perform at its peak, and their subtle but profound techniques may assist in everything from back pain, to enhancing the performance of athletes, and can even help with unsettled infants. They keep the people of Airlie Beach moving! With their 13 year old daughter, Sasha, the family shares a passion for horse riding. Karen enjoys the endurance aspect of riding whereas Daniel and Sasha are more inclined towards dressage, but their joint love of horses provides the focus of the perfect family activity. Even with the power of healing at their fingertips, time in the saddle is the perfect ‘therapy’ for the Popovich family.

Shana

Ever since she can remember Shana McClanachan has had a passion for the hairdressing industry. “I recall sitting on my grandfather’s knee and he would ask me what I wanted to do when I grew up, and I always replied that I wanted to do hair,” Shana said. After completing her hairdressing training in New Zealand, she lived and worked in London, which opened up the opportunity to travel around Europe. “I’ll never forget visiting the Colosseum in Rome. Surrounded by magnificent historical architecture, you couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and appreciation,” she said.

“We add that extra touch to make our clients happy. It’s important to us that our clients can put their trust in us to deliver an amazing result, and watching them leave the salon looking and feeling amazing is what it’s all about,” Jess said. Family is most important to Jess, so moving out of home was a big decision, but one she is happy she made. “Gaining my independence was a big change for me, but I’ve grown stronger because of it, which I love.”

Amie

With an array of trendy hairclips and pins, crazy hair styles and an outlandish personality to match, Amie’s family knew from a young age that she was destined to be a hairdresser.

Shana ensures her clients receive a thorough consultation when they visit Adam & Eve.

Clutching some written references and wearing a smile from ear to ear, she was offered her first full-time hairdressing position when she was only 14.

“We make each visit feel like your first, in order to not become complacent. Each visit to the salon should feel special, and we never lose sight of that,” she said.

Through hard work and aspiring to be the best she could, Amie was managing an elite salon on the Gold Coast only three years later, a position she held for four years, before moving to the Whitsundays.

Meeting the famous Tabatha Coffey was an inspirational experience that Shana ranks as one of her best.

Her first overseas adventure was to visit the beautiful island of Phuket in Thailand, where she experienced swimming with an elephant in the ocean.

“Tabatha is one smart woman. Her knowledge and passion is contagious, and you can’t help but feel inspired when you’re in her presence.”

“It was such a surreal experience! These animals are so in touch with the human race. They are truly amazing,” she said.

Jess

When Jess’s sister stepped into the hairdressing industry as a teenager, Jess was intrigued by the industry, and looked into following in her sister’s footsteps. “I always enjoyed playing with hair, and experimenting with new styles and designs to see what I could create. When my sister became a hairdresser, it seemed like such a fun and interesting career, so when I was offered a position in hairdressing, I couldn’t have been happier!”

Through funding herself in courses with some of the world’s best hairdressers, she studied from the best, and gone on to lead creative teams at fashion events, and has won Avant-garde styling competitions. Amie commented, “Putting people at ease in our seat and getting them excited about their hair is our specialty. Why would you go anywhere else?”

Jess believes that the welcoming environment at Adam & Eve makes it a great salon for both the hairdressers and their clients.

Always Smiling 121 dental

Forget everything you ever thought you knew about going to the dentist!

with a patient, and Airlie has been a great place to do this,” he said.

It’s not the same torture chamber we picture from our youth, and as the team from 121 Dental explain, the procedures we once feared, can now be performed with painless techniques.

121 Dental have a strong focus toward prevention, and encourage children to visit the clinic with their parents. They are shown how to effectively and thoroughly clean their teeth, and are shown the fun side of dentistry, to help alleviate any fears they may have.

Dr Alex Bornsztejn and Dr Rishi are the friendly dentists at 121 Dental, with passion for making the experience as pleasant and pain free for their patients as possible. “There aren’t many dental surgeries that people enjoy coming to, or regard as a social setting, but from the surgery rooms to the waiting area there is always someone laughing or smiling at 121 Dental. We have a very strong, caring and friendly team that support the patients during and after treatment. We also strive to make the experience as painless and comfortable as possible, taking a special interest in children and anxious patients,” Dr Rishi said. Dr Rishi grew up in the western suburbs of Melbourne, and moved to the Gold Coast for six years before arriving at Airlie Beach. He discovered the picturesque coastal town during a road-trip with close friends, and fell in love with the scenery, and the people. “There is nothing more rewarding for a dentist than building a relationship 30 www.corelife.com.au

“We are a young team, who are passionate about providing the best results. We have a comprehensive range of procedures, and keep up-todate with advances in treatment, complementing our modern approach,” Alex said. Dr Rishi spent time volunteering in the small Aboriginal town of Cherbourg. “It showed me how appreciative people can be of good dental treatment, and the need for dental care in rural and regional Australia. “I also love the challenge of proving to patients that a visit to the dentist can be an enjoyable and stress free affair. Having a television on the roof also helps to keep our patients at ease and entertained.” To get an appreciation of what modern dentistry can do for you, visit 121 Dental. They will give you something to smile about.

Passion on a plate Julie & Petrit

Passion on a plate, accompanied by liquid love. The connection between sustenance and sentiment has existed since the beginning of life. Adam and Eve were seduced by a simple apple, and today, sharing heavenly food and fine wine with our loved ones, is a divinely wicked thought. The passion that Julie and Petrit Istogu share, is only matched by their passion for people and for food. Julie grew up in Brisbane, and the couple were childhood friends who had lost contact with each other. Call it fate or perhaps divine intervention, in 1996 Julie travelled back to Europe to visit family. As she walked through the local markets with her cousin a handsome young man caught her eye. She squeezed her cousin’s hand, as if to say, “Wow look at him!” Her cousin stopped to talk to the man, and Julie was shocked to discover it was her childhood friend. Because they had lost touch for so long she hadn’t recognised him, but the attraction was instantaneous, and nine months later Julie and Petrit were engaged.

Now married for 17 years, it is their passion for food that makes their restaurant, Sorrento, an iconic Abell Point destination. Julie and Petrit moved to Airlie Beach in 2010 to open Sorrento. “Only a year after having our twins, the decision to move to Airlie was the best move we ever made. Our restaurant has an incredible view over the Whitsunday waters, a sight that still amazes and enchants us every day. “Because we are so passionate about our food coming to work never feels like a job. When you marry great food with the perfect wine, you feel on top of the world, and that’s the experience we try deliver to our guests,” Julie said. With the help of Abell Point Marina’s owner, Paul Darrouzet, Julie and Petrit have expanded the decking at Sorrento, opening up more of the restaurant to the wonderful waterfront view. The views from Sorrento are romantic, iconic and simply stunning. With wine in hand, it’s the perfect location to fall in love with the wonder of the Whitsundays. www.corelife.com.au 31

Whimsical island wonders of the Whitsundays The bluest of blue water. The whitest of white sand. A string of tropical islands dotted along an idyllic stretch of paradise. Welcome to the world-famous Whitsundays, where love, life and leisure is at its best.

Perhaps one of the most interesting facts about the Whitsunday islands, is that no-one really knows just how many there are. The group is commonly referred to as 74 islands however, upon close examination of nautical charts it is suggested that there are in fact more than 150. They were the last major island group to be discovered on Earth and as such, possess mystery and intrigue with exciting discoveries still beckoning to be found. The neighbouring coastal mainland plus the islands of the Whitsundays are the traditional home of the Ngaro Aboriginal people, with archeological research showing evidence of inhabitancy for the past 9000 years. Rock art at Nara Inlet, as well as the discovery of Aboriginal middens, give insight to the life that the Nara people led in the area, over the past 2,500 years. Hundreds of other archeological sites have been discovered across the islands, many are much older than the Nara Inlet discovery. The Ngaro Aboriginals were referred to as canoe people, as their navigational skills enabled them to travel freely from the mainland to the islands. Lieutenant James Cook is thought to be the first European person to discover the islands, and on Whit Sunday, a religious date also named Pentecost. He sailed through the passage between the northern islands which is now called ‘Whitsunday Passage’. The early pioneers were attracted to the islands during the mid-1800’s to harvest timber for buildings in nearby Bowen, and in the 1880’s, grazing leases were granted. Grazing wasn’t particularly successful, and made way for small tourism operations in the 1920’s. Many of the Ngaro people were forcibly removed from the islands, other than those who were hired to work for the European settlers, and few remain on the islands

today. When the road was constructed from Airlie Beach to Shute Harbour in 1962, the islands became more accessible, and tourism has been the main attraction since. In recent years, the Whitsunday Islands have become an exclusive tourism mecca, for celebrities and the wealthy from around the world. Due to their picturesque and exotic nature the islands have attracted blockbuster movies, Hollywood stars and royalty to visit their sparkling shores. Hamilton Island provided filming locations for the movie Muriel’s Wedding in 1994, and then for Fool’s Gold in 2008. Hamilton Island attracts celebrities galore especially during its famous yachting race week. Last year, Ronan Keating and girlfriend Storm Uechtritz attended the glitz and glamour of the Charles Heidsiek Lunch. It was also the first stop for Oprah Winfrey on her Ultimate Australian Adventure in 2010. She encountered koalas on the island before travelling to the Great Barrier Reef, and then enjoyed a barbecue feast on the shore of Whitehaven Beach, hosted by Australian chef Curtis Stone, with entertainment provided by the Ten Tenors. One of the most popular television shows in the world, Modern Family, filmed part of an episode at the recently refurbished One&Only Hayman Island, earlier this year. The cast and crew enjoyed the luxuries of the island, and were filmed diving and snorkelling amongst the islands fringing coral reef. Locals were able to get a sneak peek of the crew, after they landed at Proserpine Airport. Earlier this year Proserpine and Airlie Beach locals were excited to be able to catch a glimpse of Hollywood power couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The couple touched down at Proserpine Airport in their private jet, and shook hands with locals before entering local restaurant, Shipwrecked Seafood Bar and Grill in Airlie Beach. Two days of filming for Angelina’s film, Unbroken, was shot in the local area, with Jolie as director.

THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY A community is shaped by the people that live within it. From the cane growers and cattle farmers who nourish the land, to the teachers and artists who educate and inspire. Our lives interweave and interconnect, to create the rich tapestry that we come to know as our community. To grow stronger as a united front, the community needs a heart. A place that can become all things to all people. A place to laugh and a place to love. A place where magic happens, and memories are forged. Airlie Beach, the gateway to heart reef, now has a heart of its own on the mainland. An arts and cultural precinct that will tell the story of our pioneering history, while forging opportunities for an entertaining future. It’s the Whitsunday Arts and Cultural Centre, opening its quirky and idiosyncratic doors to the public this September. Known as the WACC, the arts and cultural centre has found its home in one of Airlie Beach’s most iconic buildings, on Waterson Way. Long-term residents will remember the nostalgia of the skating rink that was located there in the 1980’s, while in more recent years, it was famous for hosting the controversial Shark Show.

The DeMartini Room is capable of hosting cocktail-style functions for up to 400 people and banquet style for up to 250 people, and can facilitate a staged area, to attract unique performances to come to Airlie Beach. This classy and chic space will also serve as a unique wetweather ceremony option. Don’t let the stress of a rainy day ruin your ceremony. The DeMartini Room can be configured into a beautiful chapel-style venue, for last-minute ceremony changes. Upstairs at the WACC feels like a whole new world, encouraging fun and frivolity. As you enter the building, you will be guided through the informative and fascinating ‘Discovery Space’. This will become part gallery, and part museum, an attractive showcase of the story of Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays. Local families have come forth to tell the story of their own Whitsunday heritage, to pay respect to the pioneers who shaped the land we live on. Historical farming relics and abandoned memorabilia have been given a fresh new purpose at the WACC, to preserve our community’s unique heritage. The Discovery Area leads into the DeMartini Room and bar, which is the ground floor entertainment space. The ambience is very industrial, on-trend with a chic Melbourne warehouse feel. The plantation shutters were repurposed from Hayman Island, and open seamlessly into the modern space, with exposed brick walls, and a modish bar from a vintage caravan. distinctively tropical Queensland feel.

Both areas have been meticulously styled to present a plethora of photographic opportunities, to ensure that your special occasion will be captured beautifully. This is what the WACC is all about. Providing space, at a scale unseen previously at Airlie Beach, for the community to call its own. An additional two separate meeting rooms opens up further possibilities to corporate and convention events. The WACC catering division can provide elegant food and beverage options, to offer full package event solutions. The venue capacity of the WACC is larger than any other convention or event space available at Airlie Beach, allowing for bigger wedding celebrations, bigger birthday celebrations and bigger community events. Constructed with the community in mind, the hire rates are competitive, to give brides on a budget the opportunity to host a sensational celebration, that won’t cost the earth. After the grand opening in September, the WACC will continue to build its event calendar, to bring a range of exciting shows and performances to Airlie Beach. Everything from concerts and comedians, to helping talented local artists launch their creativity to the community. This is your space, our space, the community’s space. It’s innovative, fresh and contemporary, and will certainly leave a lasting impression on all who visit.

vision for something marvellous for the Whitsunday community. After identifying the regional needs outlined at the WMDL Airlie Beach Summit in May last year Paul started conversations with the community about what was needed in our region. To help with the brainstorming of ideas he enlisted the help of Jo Sweeney & Heidi Ward to help plan the long term vision for the precinct and building cultural capacity in Airlie Beach. Jo is an award-winning designer and art director, who has had creative businesses in Airlie Beach for years. She originally grew up in Emerald, where her parents were garbage contractors and managed the local dump. She grew a fondness and appreciation for repurposing old treasures, to give them a new life, a skill that has followed into her art career. After a head injury a year ago, she was directed to stop work and take a complete break. As an active member of the community, this concept was foreign to her when she was forced to completely stop work and resign from her position in the newly formed Chamber of Commerce.

After eight months of complete rest, Paul’s proposition was enticing, and she relished the thought of designing a social hub with soul, somewhere visitors and locals alike could share stories and create memories.

MEET THE WACCY TEAM! The Whitsunday Arts and Cultural Centre is the majestic result of a tenacious team of three, who by their own admissions, operate at 100 miles per hour to achieve the best results. Owner, Paul Wellard, is well-known throughout the Whitsunday community as a developer of some of the best residential and holiday accommodation in the area. Originally from Sydney, Paul has been a part of the Whitsunday community for the past 14 years, and is the developer behind the popular Baybreeze Apartments, Cape Gloucester Eco Resort and apartments and villas throughout Cannonvale and Hamilton Island.

Heidi Ward is the events and conferencing manager, and had worked tirelessly with Jo in creating the Airlie Beach Chamber of Commerce. Heidi has over 20 years hospitality experience, she co-owns Catering Whitsunday, an award-winning catering establishment, and alongside her husband Brett owned the popular award-winning restaurant The Courtyard. She has been in Airlie Beach for 35 years, her first job as a teenager was working at the original Hog’s Breath Café, and she has been affiliated with surf lifesaving and the Airlie Beach Traders Association. With a passion for delivering exceptional customer service and events that will leave a lasting impression, Heidi also assisted Jo with the interior design of the WACC. The ladies teamed up to deliver a quirky feature in the women’s bathroom, to compliment the controversial men’s urinal Jo created for the council more than a decade ago. Paul, Jo and Heidi would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Karen our Business Development Manager and the tradespeople who shared their vision and helped to make it a reality. Eddie, Bruce, Justin aka Tom, Adam and Rooster. Their flexibility and patience allowed the implementation of design ideas as a myriad of repurposed items arrived on site. The team have been particularly humbled by the warmness and generosity shown to them by the local community. Homes are being opened up, roast dinners cooked, photos getting shared and stories being told. Farm paddocks are being roamed and many historic relics are being recovered, generously donated by local businesses and families.

This terminal has been well over 18 months in the making and we are quite sure the local community and tourists will agree it’s an outstanding development

Port of Airlie welcomes Cruise Whitsundays Port of Airlie is excited to welcome Cruise Whitsundays to their new home, with operations beginning from their new terminal on the 6th September. Over the past 18 months of planning and construction, Port of Airlie has become home to the most state-of-the-art passenger transit facility in coastal North Queensland with operations beginning at the highly anticipated Cruise Whitsundays maritime terminal on 6th September. Port of Airlie Sales Manager Andrew Forster said Cruise Whitsundays’ maritime terminal was the major component in a sophisticated, allencompassing Whitsunday “transit hub” also consisting of a bus and taxi transit terminal, public fuel wharf and a 176-space public car park at Port of Airlie, right on Airlie Beach’s doorstep. “This much-needed transport facility is finally being realised and will accommodate the ever-growing local and tourist population across the region,” Mr Forster said. “While this transit hub will be the area’s major link to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef for visiting tourists and locals alike, it also sees Airlie Beach as a destination in its own right.

special deals for locals on offer through September. The new terminal features airport-style check in counters including baggage conveyor belts, a large café, a gift shop and custom designed jetties to allow for easy access on/off the boats. The latest addition of the cruise terminal will further reinforce the investment opportunity offered at Port of Airlie, which has proved to be a winner with buoyant sales and increased interest over the past 18 months, fuelled by buyers recognising real value in the Whitsunday marketplace. Analysis of sales data provided by PRD Whitsundays over the last 18 months has revealed that the Port of Airlie has comprised 13% of total market share with over $30 million in sales. “I’m sure history will show that the partnership between Port of Airlie and Cruise Whitsundays to be one of the most exciting and economically beneficial developments the area has seen in recent years. Airlie Beach really has become the destination, not just the gateway. We look forward to a long and rewarding partnership,” Mr Forster said.

“People staying at Port of Airlie or elsewhere in the Whitsundays will be able to step off a boat and walk right into the heart of Airlie which should be a huge boost for retailers in the central business area as well as at Port of Airlie.” Cruise Whitsundays Chief Executive Officer Nick Hortle said it was an exciting time for the company.“This terminal has been well over 18 months in the making and we are quite sure the local community and tourists will agree it’s an outstanding development,” Mr Hortle said. “Our guests will have a comfortable, safe and seamless experience when travelling to and from Airlie Beach, not to mention such easy access to the centre of town,” he said. “We are looking forward to welcoming people to the terminal when we start operating from there on 6 September,” “To make it easier, our timetable won’t change – simply replace any Abell Point Marina arrivals/departures with Port of Airlie, and Shute Harbour remains the same.” Cruise Whitsundays has several opening celebrations planned, as well as

own private hangar, and within minutes, you could be taking a cooling dip in your own lap pool. With only 57 freehold land blocks available, including both commercial and residential options, it’s the ultimate dream, or a premium investment opportunity, not to be missed. There are 40 residential lots in total, with 23 already sold. Eight homes with hangars have been constructed, with one new hangar home and land package available for sale, for immediate occupation. Only 16 vacant land lots remain. Whitsunday Airport also provides a base for visiting pilots, both private and commercial, who are visiting the region. Avgas, JetA1, and Aeroshell Oils are available at competitive prices between 8am and 5pm, seven days per week, and at other times by arrangement. Private hangar rental is available while visiting pilots explore the region. Commercial opportunity at Whitsunday Airport is an attractive investment option, for operators looking to capitalize on the attraction of the Whitsunday Islands. Aviation tourism, and general aviation providers, such as avionics and aircraft engineers, would be encouraged to enquire on how they can become an integral part of Whitsunday Airport. The airport is also looking to increase its service to a wider area, and is seeking an operator who would offer charter services to Mackay and Rockhampton, Cairns, and the Bowen Basin mining towns, such as Moranbah and Clermont. While the airport is home mainly to aviation businesses, the popular Airlie Beach Swim School by Danielle is also located there, offering swimming lessons to children and adults, who want to increase their confidence in the water. The Beaver Bar and Café is open to the public, a unique location to enjoy a meal and a coffee, while watching the excitement of the aircraft in action. Whitsunday Airport and Whitsunday Aviation Village Estate, the dream of living your aviation lifestyle, is now a reality. Take your seat and buckle up, it’s going to be an exciting journey.

It’s our 3rd birthday! We’ve survived the terrible two’s!

Did you know?

Much like raising a child the second year in business is known as the toughest. You witnessed our first step into the market in September, 2011. You heard our first words, and have watched us grow. As we enter our third year, our confidence in our publication knows no bounds. The third year is the story telling year, and we have set our sights on making this year the best yet. We tell the stories that make our community great. From the miners of the Bowen Basin, to the fishermen on the Coral Sea. From sugar cane growers in Sarina, to wedding celebrants in the Whitsundays, our passion is built on sharing your passion. We distribute your story far and wide. From local coffee tables in hotels, motels and cafes, to international airports including Brisbane and Sydney. But how do we make this happen? It all started with Core Life’s Editor, Rebecca Atkinson.

At the age of 19, Rebecca unexpectedly became a business-owner. The tour operator she worked for in Cairns, left town and abandoned their business, so after discussions with the landlord, Rebecca was given the keys and left in charge. Years later, Rebecca was one of the founders of City Life Magazine, which she later sold. After three and a half years of planning, the first edition of her newest magazine, Core Life, burst onto the scene, and has become a household favourite throughout the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions.

Did you know?

Core Life Magazine’s office is located on two and a half acres of beautiful land at Mt Julian. Rebecca converted part of her family home into an office, where she and Core’s designer, Jemma Albrecht work from. “There’s nothing better than being able to jump into the pool or the hot tub to discuss pagination or feature ideas. Working from home is a dream come true, and it means I get to spend more time with my son, Kaylem,” Rebecca said.

Did you know?

Our publications are hand-delivered every month! If you put pedometers on our distribution team at the beginning of the month, the numbers would be off the scale! Throughout Mackay, this mammoth task is undertaken by our three bubbly sales reps, Anna Malahoff, Jess Clark and Maria Langford, as well as our accounts star, Christine Forrest. Christine is mum to three sons, so compared with soccer, camping and bull-wrangling on weekends, lugging boxes of magazines is child’s play!

Did you know?

As a youngster, Maria and her brother would hop on the back of her dad’s truck, and hitch a ride to the dump. It was like a big treasure hunt, where Maria could unearth all manner of treasures. She doesn’t remember it as being yucky or smelly, just a big adventure. Those who know Maria now would be totally shocked at this, as she wouldn’t go near the dump these days, let alone rummage through it.

Anna is also a model for Elite Avenue modelling agency, and stars on Mackay Mazda’s television commercial on Channel Seven. Jess moved to Queensland from Tasmania, and has a fond love of orangutans. She looks after the distribution in Moranbah and the Coalfields. Our distribution throughout the Whitsundays, including Bowen, is undertaken by Jemma, Rebecca, and Rebecca’s husband Paul, demonstrating the love and support that our families have for Core Life. Quentin and Shantell look after our distribution in Emerald Our entire Core Life team work remotely. There is no longer a central office, allowing everyone to create their own balance between work and family. After spending many years striving to be everything to everyone, Rebecca learned to place a greater importance on what truly matters, which is family. It’s the gift of flexibility that she gives to her team, to allow them to maximise time with loved ones, while still establishing a career. Our creative team is made up of our designer, Jemma Albrecht, journalist Amanda Wright, photographer Norina Jane and makeup artist Rachelle Barrett. Julia Farrell is our proof-reading guru, minimising mistakes as much as possible before our pages are sent to print.

Did you know?

Did you know?

Jemma’s ambition is to visit 30 countries before she turns 30. She is well on her way, a trip to Vietnam last year has taken her close to twenty, and she is planning another oriental adventure to Japan. She can’t claim that a dingo stole her baby, but one did bite her on the bottom during a trip to Fraser Island. But that doesn’t rank close to her scariest mishap, when she was once run over by a car!

Amanda grew up in Marlborough, New Zealand, and was once a national athletics champion. She broke records in shot put and discus from age seven, and attributes her strength to eating a lot of Marmite! A multi-talented athlete, she represented her province in indoor cricket as well as table tennis, and played an international game of cricket against Argentina when they toured New Zealand. Her sporting career was halted when a sporting injury led to a major back operation when she was only 16.

Did you know?

Norina’s father, Raoul Kent, was the highest-ranking martial artist in the world and was the national Director for Jujitsu. Norina is famous for her flowing blonde hair, but before she left it to grow to great lengths, she had shaved the lot off! Rachelle grew up in Vanuatu, where she got a taste for French glamour as a tea and tidy. She walked down the aisle to ‘When the saints come marching in’ strummed by a ukulele as baby powder was thrown on her.

Core Life represents the core of our community, our people. We may be a small team, but we take tremendous pride in sharing our heart. Our industry, Our life, Our people.

make me OVER! has been created by: ADAM & EVE

Kim had been wanting a change for some time, so I knew she was perfect for this makeover. Kim has let her hair grow out for 5 years, retaining a natural finish and colour, just waiting for the right moment to take the plunge for a change! Kim works long hours so I wanted to create something that was professional and funky but also an easy to manage style on a day-to-day basis. For as long as I have known Kim, I have always wanted to take her lighter. I felt it would compliment her skin and bring out her beautiful brown eyes. After a thorough consultation with Kim, I decided to take her colour brighter all over but, not without a few slices of a brighter contrasting colour to show her personality and still maintain a professional look.

for the girls

MODEL Kim Bennion > STYLIST Amie Chalmers > MAKE UP ARTIST Rachelle Barrett

AFTER

To achieve the bright blonde, I gave her a full head of foils back to back. Leaving out the hair I weaved, Kim’s hair was globally lighter but with a little of her natural hair still coming through to assist in the illusion of more texture in her fine hair. I used a mahogany/violet colour in a few slices ‘peeking through’ on the sides to create an overall fuller look! I decided to do an asymmetrical concave bob to add some funk & difference through the front in which accentuated the contrasting slices! STYLING I firstly blow dried Kim’s hair with a round brush and with some Wella SP Resolute Lift targeted at the roots to give volume and hold in her style. Once I had blow-dried, I added a few scattered waves through the side with a GHD to assist in more texture. Once I had finished with my heat styling, I used some dry shampoo, Sebastian Drynamic and American Crew Boost Powder to add more texture and volume. FINISH I back-combed around the crown area to promote more shape in Kim’s haircut and once again, volume! I then used Sebastian Microweb Fibre to piece out the ends and add texture. After using dry volumising products, I finished with Wella Luxe Oil Light Spray for shine and nourishment, then a strong yet workable hair spray Wella SP Perfect Hold to keep my style and shape in place!

MAKE UP We wanted to give Kim a fresh, modern and slightly edgy look. I chose an eyeshadow that would make her gorgeous hazel eyes pop and an understated lip to balance her look. She could wear this to a special occasion or tone it down by omitting the black eyeshadow and extra lashes. FACE I cleansed and moisturised. Then, after applying her eyeshadow I airbrushed a nice even tone all over Kim’s face. I then contoured her lovely cheek bones with bronzer, added some blush in, a dusty pink to freshen up her cheeks and show off her

amazing bone structure. EYES I applied a gun metal grey over the entire mobile lid then blended up to the crease. In the corner of the eye to smoke them out a little I applied a sparkly black with a crease brush, then blended it to soften. Black eyeliner along the waterline and upper lash line was applied, as well as lots of mascara followed by a nice set of natural half strip lashes. The lashes added a bit of flutter without going over the top. LIPS I used a nude pink lip gloss. www.corelife.com.au 53

Iconic Bride of the month

Nicole CONTOR “Iconic Bride Photography had previously captured my sister’s wedding three years ago and after seeing the amazing images that Norina captured, I instantly knew that I wanted Norina to be my wedding photographer too. “Norina and her team were an absolute pleasure to deal with leading up to, and on our wedding day. “She was open to all of the suggestions we had put forward to her and we loved her fun, bubbly and vibrant nature. She made the entire experience very enjoyable and we felt incredibly comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera throughout our day. “Our bridal party and guests couldn’t commend her highly enough. Norina was a part of our special day from start to finish, and I love that she was there the entire time, never missing a moment. The service was exceptional, and we would absolutely recommend Iconic Bride for future weddings.” How did Dallas propose? Dallas and I were away for the weekend celebrating our six year anniversary, when he proposed to me at Aria Restaurant in Brisbane. What was your ‘something old, new, borrowed and blue’? My something old was a part of my mother’s wedding dress, which she had made into a horseshoe keepsake for luck. Something new was my Anna Campbell cuff. Something borrowed was an angel brooch I had given my sister for luck on her wedding day, and something blue was my garter. What song did you choose to walk down the aisle to? Birds of Tokyo – Lanterns. What was something unique that you chose to do on your wedding day? We released a Thai lantern, which symbolises love, prosperity and good fortune. Where did you honeymoon? We honeymooned in the Maldives and stayed at the Six Senses Lamuu. It was heaven! What is your best piece of advice for future brides? Give yourself plenty of time to find your dress, at least seven months or more if you can to allow for the perfect style, and perfect fit.

SICK OF SHAVING? How many times have you shaved or waxed your legs in your lifetime? How often do you do it? How much does it cost you in time and money? I had been waxing my legs, underarms and bikini line for 14 years when I turned 27 years old. I’d been burned a couple of times. I had ingrown hairs ALL the time, I had lost skin and had scars from the ingrowns. It cost me around $1240 a year for waxing treatments and probably almost $250 a year for exfoliants, moisturisers and ingrown hair treatments. I still grew hair everywhere I waxed, although it was somewhat finer. It was dark and not very pleasant growing it long enough to wax again, every 6 weeks. It was when I was 27 I discovered permanent hair reduction. I discovered Intense pulsed Light and have never regretted the move from waxing to light treatment. I had 8 treatments on my underarms, which I completed over 9 years ago and today I grow 7 individual hairs under my arms which I shave 3 or four times a year! My legs took 4 full treatments and again, I shave my legs a few times a year to get the “survivors” and if I didn’t bother, no one would notice as the regrowth is very sparse and fine. My

results were so good because I’m a good candidate for the treatment and I had my treatments at the right intervals to obtain a great result. Dark hair, coarse hair, skin that can be protected from the sun throughout treatment plan are all perfect. Unfortunately blonde, grey and most red hair isn’t going to respond well. Don’t worry, though! Technology is catching up and it won’t be long till I’m successfully treating all hair colours with new techniques! You too may be the perfect candidate for IPL hair reduction. At Sensorium Skin Technology, you will have a thorough consultation, at no cost to you, to determine if IPL hair reduction is an option for you. Hair colour, thickness, density and skin colour are all considerations when considering IPL hair removal and reduction. Some hormonal conditions will also impact on results, but do NOT mean you can’t be treated. Results are still successful if your expectations are met. Honesty is always paramount when consulting and if I don’t think you will get a good result, I will not recommend the treatment to you. Pricing varies from person to person as the size of the area to be treated will vary too, but a quote is supplied at consultation and that quote is valid throughout the duration of your treatment for that area. Body hair needs treatment only every 8 weeks and hair growth may be resolved in as little as 6 treatments!

right you should be able to have your cake and eat it too. A time of great enjoyment and happiness should prevail and some luck to top it all. It will be a very good period for real estate dealings. You will need the help of a professional.

LIBRA SEPT 24 - OCT 23 Keep your temper under control, or you could create an incident with long lasting repercussions. Travel plans could be deferred or cancelled but, your love life should be good. If you are considering changing your place of residence, think carefully before you actually do it. A generous gesture towards family could do wonders for your image. Keep a close eye on your health. SCORPIO OCT 24 - NOV 22 There will be some deception about but you could gain the upper hand in the long run. The career side of your love life could become very demanding and you will have to be very careful not to make mistakes. Romance looks very good and for someone not yet attached, this could be a really good period. You will be called upon to give account of your past actions. Do not expect everything to go according to plan. SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 20 Perhaps some disappointment in partnership affairs could create a lack of self-confidence. It could also make you more gullible so make sure you do not believe anything but what you see. Big changes in your career affairs or relationships could go through a new phase. Bigger and better things are ahead and more interest in your future than usual. There could be something in the distance that will attract you and you could be spending more time away. Career moves or moving into a new environment is possible. CAPRICORN DEC 21 - JAN 19 Do not pass on any gossip you hear during this period as you need to be cautious in your dealings with others. Do not expect too much too soon. The best time will be had by the romantically inclined. A surprise find or an old favourite could turn up unexpectedly. Some changes that you

Many exciting things are in the offering. You could get mixed up in some peculiar situation with friends. Your romantic urges could get stimulated and someone you thought to be unaffected by your charms, could suddenly prove you wrong. Be careful with gossip, someone may be trying to blacken your name. AQUARIUS JAN 20 - FEB 19 You will need to keep your financial affairs under control. It would be wise to keep your mind at things that really matter because outside influences would be distracting to your cause. There could be a need for some push in matters that interest you, now, to get what you want. Romance is also very much in your mind but do not let it get in the way of progress in career matters. PISCES FEB 20 - MARCH 20 If you are a positive thinker you will have a better chance to progress in your endeavours. Plans already made could need to be altered but the results will still favour your ideas. An offer too good to refuse could complicate your romantic life a little, but should benefit you in the long run. You could be

thinking of getting away from it all and it could become possible if you play your cards right. Aspirations to succeed can become a reality. ARIES MARCH 21- APRIL 20 You will need to talk things out with your loved ones before making sudden changes in your schedule. If you plan well and take care of details, success will follow. Maybe you could do with some time for yourself or only with a chosen few. Travel is a possibility and your idea of rest and relaxation should be happening very soon. Financial affairs could do with an overhaul and may be your priorities are not in order. TAURUS APRIL 21- MAY 20 Too much imagination could bring on situations that are better to avoid. Be careful of all extremes. Not a good idea to be spending money you have not got yet, wait until the fruit drops before you eat it. If you play your cards

The wise people will just take this period as it comes and stick with the routine affairs. Circumstances could be misleading and decisions should be based on what you know rather than whom you know. Personal relationships should be improving and someone you have been waiting for could turn up suddenly. Your aims and future plans should be very much on the forefront. A little extra attention to loved ones and you should find the difference surprising in personal relations. Some romance could get you on the right track for enjoyment. CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 Do not get involved in anything you cannot see the end result of. Check for facts rather than hear say. Improving personal relationships should be time well spent. Not a good period for new ventures. If you are too quick in changing your mind, you could miss out on something important. The home front could bring some problems if you do not take things easy. LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 22 If you have been springing a few surprises on loved ones lately, watch out as your latest one could bring in fireworks. Some problems with career matters could be blown out of proportion, if you let it. A romantic affair started now promises to be rather brief, but very exciting, like a firecracker. Someone you least expect is out to create problems for you and restrict your movements. A windfall is indicated through the efforts of a partner. Travel plans could now be made successfully and if undertaken now, will be well appreciated.

Living in Tropical Paradise

Sitting at my desk at home, I can look out at a white beach and the crystal clear, turquoise waters stretching to the Whitsunday Islands, only a short boat trip away.

How lucky are we?! Even the most expensive hotel struggles to compete with this view…. Every time a new doctor comes to the area from overseas, they are amazed at the spectacular beauty that the locals tend to take for granted. Having come from overseas myself, I regularly look out over the waters and am grateful for the lifestyle that we can all enjoy. Even down to the fact that you don’t need wooly hats, scarves, gloves, boots and 4 layers of clothes to keep your children warm – flip flops, shorts and a T shirt is usually all you need! Then of course you do need the sun-shirt to protect from stingers and sunburn – but you know what I mean. Australia is truly “the lucky country”! Look around and enjoy the spectacular beauty and unrivalled choices we have – catch red emperor on the reef, see Platypuses at Eungella, snorkel the reef or pull up your boat at an island and camp in complete isolation for a few days. It is often only when people travel abroad and see what other countries think is spectacular, that you realise on coming home that we are REALLY BLESSED to live in the Whitsundays! “Smell the roses” (frangipanis) every day, have gratitude towards the wonders around us and you will attract into your life, even more great stuff!

and some good bacteria down here”.

Spring

clean from inside out This is exactly what happens to our colon when we don’t clean it out. Contrary to popular belief it does not have a self-cleaning button, and this 5 foot long piece of tube that has corrugated edges on the inside build up faecal matter over your life time turning into a plaque that becomes like cement. This putrid matter that eventually turns to cement like substance is then home to many bad bacteria, killing the goodies and then we start to feel “yucky” pains in the tummy, gas, bloating, bad breath, no energy, acne etc and we wonder what is going on.

When spring is in the air we have an urge to clean out houses, cars, bedrooms or backyards. Cleaning up our backyard is something that is visually rewarding. We can immediately see the results of our efforts, the lawns look well groomed, the garden beds well mulched, the pile of rubbish has finally been removed and the plants are standing up straight with lots of vibrant colours. Even when we might re-paint the house or gerni the cement after the wet, the results look and are great.

It is our colon trying to say “Hey, I need a clean and some good bacteria down here”.

Unfortunately we cannot say the same about when we clean our colon! Dare we even think about it, after all if you open your bowels every day or so you’re clean right? In fact that is no-where near right. Let’s look at two examples, 1) your teeth- can you imagine what they would look and feel like if we didn’t clean them for 6 months, the build-up would be such that we could scrap it off with a paint scraper, the bad bacteria would be having a party and imagine our breath !!, 2) the same goes for our rubbish bins, imagine if we put our rubbish directly into the bins with no bags and while we might empty every week we don’t give it a good clean, can you imagine the build-up of bad bacteria growing in there after one month – eergghh.

Often if we have digestive problems we can trace it back to our birth and early years where we are supposed to be well set up with good bacteria, however if we were unwell or our mums were on medication, antibiotics while feeding or carrying us, then this leaves us on our back foot when it comes to good bacteria in our system. This allows the baddies like Candida Albicans to overtake making us feel very unwell. So while we can not see immediately the results of cleaning up our colon, what we can see even after one treatment sometimes, is healthier skin, bright eyes, high energy, no gas or bloating, no protruding tummy, and more. So come and have a true Spring Clean!

be hair free At Allure because we are a specialised medical cosmetic skin clinic we get people constantly enquiring about laser hair removal. For the last 6 months I have been doing a lot of research to discover what the most effective laser for hair removal is. The reason Laser is so much more effective than IPL at hair removal is that it works at a specific frequency of light that targets the pigment in the hair follicle. Because of this the hairs can be specifically targeted at a lower power. To achieve the same result with IPL much higher power is needed which leads to much more pain and a much higher risk of complications. There are a number of hair removal lasers available. The Cynosure Vectus laser is the newest and most advanced Diode Laser in the world. The advantage of this laser is that we now have a way to treat the stem cells in the hair follicle. The stem cell has no pigment so lasers available up till now have found it very difficult to treat these which meant that the hair was be more likely to grow back and needed more treatments. Using advanced technology means that these cells can now be treated and remove these hairs permanently. This laser can be used to treat pigment and blood vessels on the face as well. The other real advantage is that the treatment is much quicker. This means the cost of laser hair removal has now been substantially reduced. It has now become affordable for all even including large areas like the back and full legs. If you have any further queries or would like to book a consultation please call Allure on 1300 112311.

The “Secret” to Losing Weight It’s not a hard one... you just have to get started. Stop putting it off, stop waiting for conditions to be perfect. They will never be.

There’s never going to be a ‘good’ time, when everything is in order in your life, when the kids are at school, when the house has been renovated. When the dishes have been done, or when the sock drawer is cleaned out. When *whatever task in the form of an ‘excuse’ you keep telling yourself has been done*. Time is passing right NOW. Right now as you read this... as you watch TV, as you waste time on social media. It’s all these small moments that are making up your LIFE. Moments you are never, ever going to get back again. Why wait any longer to be living the healthiest, fittest and most energetic life you can? Why don’t you deserve that? You can do it, you just have to start! I’ve been in the fitness industry for over ten years now and have heard a thousand excuses as to why someone can’t start or it’s ‘not the right time’.

What on earth are you waiting for?

Till you are on the operating table having a double by-pass? Till your doctor says you are diabetic? Till you have put on an additional 20kgs? What is going to make you do this NOW? These may be extreme examples, but they are also real-life as I have had clients come to me AFTER that has happened. The one thing they all say

is “If only I prevented it from happening in the first place”. They will never take their health for granted again. Make sure you PREVENT this from happening to you at all. Don’t wait until you are on death’s door till you do something about your health. You may not be one of the lucky ones who get a second chance. There is no ‘perfect’ time to get started, just start TODAY. Do something small, 30 minutes of exercise. If you aren’t sure where to start, give us a call and we’ll put you on the right track. There are so many resources on the internet that you can refer to. We recognised the need for this many years ago, and update our website monthly with informative articles, recipes, workouts and more. There’s absolutely NO excuse that you can’t get started.

The “secret” is to stop making the excuses and just do it, before you become a statistic. Selina Wright - Red E Personal Training ph 4953 3134

sweet teeth Playing hide-and-go seek, commando-rolling through the garden and jumping in piles of leaves. Children have a great spirit for adventure and fun, and exploration is part of the learning process, but it can mean they are more susceptible to finding nasties in the wild! While snakes and spiders immediately come to mind, a smaller predator is more likely to want to snack on your children. It’s a little insect called a tick, and while the majority of the time they are relatively harmless, their bite can sometimes develop into a serious disease. Ticks are commonly found in humid environments, and will live amongst grass, bushes and piles of leaves and compost. An action as simple as brushing up against a bush while walking can transport a tick onto your clothing. The tick will often make its way to the warmest and most moist area it can find, often behind the knees, under armpits, in the hair or in the groin area. The tick attaches itself to your skin and feeds upon your blood. Often this is painless, and it can be days before you notice a tick on your skin. Ticks inject a toxin into your skin, but usually this will only create a mild irritation. Ticks can transport Spotted Fever or Lyme disease, and often these diseases intensify after the tick has been removed. If you find a tick, use fine pointed tweezers and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Gently pull the tick straight out with steady pressure. Seek medical attention if part of the tick is left in the skin. If a rash or swelling, red marks or flu-like symptoms develop, even weeks after the tick is removed, see your doctor!

Your child’s diet is one of the most critical factors influencing their oral health. Dental decay is primarily caused by bacteria within the oral environment. These bacteria consume sugars which your child ingests, digest them and produce an acid which eats away at the tooth. Reducing the amount and frequency of sugar your child consumes will help starve these bacteria and ultimately reduce the incidence of tooth decay. Furthermore, the acidity of the food and beverages that make up your child’s diet must be considered. Consuming highly acidic substrate literally dissolves the enamel and underlying tooth structure, in a process known as erosion. Similarly, erosion can be just as destructive as dental decay, and if unchecked can progress rapidly. By reducing the amount and frequency of both your child’s sugar and acidic food/beverage consumption, you will reduce the need for dental intervention and treatment. Success in a student’s performance does not come easily or naturally to most, at any age. Of course, there are the unique few that accomplish and excel at any task that is set or they choose to engage in, seemingly without any exertion required. However, behind this effortless exterior, there are commonly learned and experienced chronic factors that assist a student to place themselves in a position to generate positive performance outcomes. It is believed that if students are exposed to these factors and they are practised and honed during the rigor of the classroom, and complimented and supported in their home life, this will lay a solid platform for success.

The factors: Routines

Both at home and school, students feel comfortable when they know what is ‘coming around the corner’. Involving the student in organising routines and timetables through thoughtful discussion empowers them to think about the aspects of their life and the lives of significant others.

Variety

Exposure to a variety of positively challenging physical, emotional and social experiences allow students the opportunity to independently gauge strengths and weaknesses, improving one’s self knowledge. Most of the time, students are amazed at their achievements when they try something new, realising boundaries and benchmarks are usually self imposed.

Environment

Creating a unique learning environment, provided with the clever mix of motivation and meditation will help students maintain an educational equilibrium. Investigate the working spaces of your student both in the classroom and at home for the ‘light and shade’ required at certain times.

Learning from any outcome

Fostering a sense of ‘Nothing is Negative’. This will innately build the qualities of persistence and resilience. The greatest lessons are learned from an unsuccessful outcome if the investigative analysis occurs and internal/external feedback is carefully considered.

Time

This is the most important factor for all involved in a child’s education and development. Each child is unique and there is no ‘one size fits all’ in the time it takes for a student to grasp a concept. The manipulation of time and superficially solving a student’s problem will never lead to retention or a child’s feeling of independent success. As teachers and parents, we need to be open to supporting our children with different learning experiences, no matter the length of time it takes, to assist them in capturing their ‘ah ha!’ moment.

Let it go…let it snow! Let it go, let it go…if you’re the parent of a ‘Frozen-mad’ child, you will already have chills running down your spine at the thought of having to hear that song one more time, however there’s no denying the popularity of Disney’s worldwide phenomenon, Frozen. For the uninitiated, Frozen is a Disney animated movie, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale The Snow Queen. The popular film was an instant hit with children, and went on to become the highest grossing animated film of all time. One of the most memorable parts of the movie is when Elsa sings ‘Let it Go’ and her dress becomes a beautiful blue ice dress. Parents have struggled to find Frozen-themed merchandise, which sells out almost instantly, so the alternative is to host a Frozen-themed party, where imagination can create a magical winter wonderland.

Decorations

Elsa, the icy songstress, creates a beautiful colour-theme from her sparkling blue and white ice dress, otherwise deep purple is another popular Frozen theme colour. Frozen-themed party accessories are easy to locate online, from plates and cups to place names and table-cloths, but a cheaper option is to purchase one specialty item, such as plates, and then just accessorise everything else inexpensively to match your chosen colour-theme.

Fairy lights draped behind net curtains make a magical atmosphere.

For an inexpensive table decoration, poke a selection of sticks and branches into a polystyrene cube, then spray-paint white and cover in white sparkly glitter, for a ‘snow-covered forest’ look. Drape strings of clear crystals to add to the icicle theme. For hanging decorations, spray-paint polystyrene balls white and cover in white, silver or blue sparkly glitter too. Check your Christmas decorations or visit a decoration shop for more ‘winter-inspired’ decorations.

Games

Make it the coolest party ever with a range of fun activities.

Pin the nose on Olaf

Similar to ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ but instead the children try to stick a carrot where Olaf’s nose should be.

Ice cube smash

Use a pom pom or a soft ball that looks like a snowball to knock over plastic cups. Paint the plastic cups with white and blue paint to look like large ice cubes.

Let it blow

Dress the birthday girl in a Frozen-inspired ice blue dress and play the song ‘Let it Go’ as all the children sing along and blow bubbles.

Ice bracelets

Make an ice bracelet using clear and light blue beads and bracelet elastic.

Party food

•Marshmallows dipped in white chocolate and then dipped in blue or white sprinkles. •Baby carrots named ‘Olaf noses’. •Frozen grapes served in white sparkly cupcake holders. •Donut balls dipped in icing sugar to make ‘snow balls’. •Ice jelly; layer blue and clear jelly and then cut into cubes when set. Also remember to ask your child what they might like at their party, it’s incredible what magic their imagination can create!

The curse of bananas on boats and fishing is legendary.

The bad luck from bananas on a boat dates back hundreds of years and I have heard all sorts of stories from where this superstitious theory comes from. I want to recall a recent tale from an extended overnight trip to the GBR I experienced. Now from my experience although I’m not big on superstitious theory’s, I don’t go out of my way to make bananas part of the catering on board. When a guest requested bananas on the shopping list to go with his weetbix for breakfast I did wonder if he knew about the bad luck theory? Well the trip has started and lets call him angler “b” for banana started off well catching the first mackerel then a big hammerhead shark and a few reefies. The banana theory at this stage was very much at bay but that was until the next day when breakfast came around. Angler “b” had a big feed of weetbix and sliced banana, under much dismay from the rest of the crew. It seemed to be not long after breakfast that the curse of the bananas started to take hold. Angler “b” was reef fishing amongst the rest of the crew when something hit his bait hard. It hit that hard that the $750 live fibre/shimano outfit was pulled clean from his grasp and straight into the sea never to be seen again! Through all the commotion the final thing said was “he obviously has slippery banana skin still on his fingers”. Not long after this we set up for some trolling and had a steady flow of mackerel and yellowfin tuna taking baits and lures on everyone’s lines except angler “b”!! It was to the point where the other guys were giving angler “b” the strike on their rods only to find that angler “b” would catch the undersize mackerel, or a trevally or simply the fish would get off for no real reason other than bad luck! Finally angler “b” hooked up, line was peeling from the reel and we thought his luck was about to change. That’s when the marlin heaped from the water shook its head and threw the hooks straight back to angler “b”! Yep, I think the curse of the bananas is going strong!

So from now on bananas will remain on land and I don’t think angler “b” will argue!!
