Let go and live now! August is our Travel and Leisure issue and, for my boys and I, it’s time to hit the snow fields in Queenstown for 10 days! Yippeee I’m so excited for our adventure! I never used to be though… “I’m always busy and there always seems to be something more pressing that requires my time. Not to mention the cost and how will everything get done while I am away? A break will have to wait!” Sound familiar? This was me only a few years ago. My whole life revolved around the business my staff and the endless list of jobs that had to be done around the house. I thought my outlook on life was me being responsible, productive, dedicated and before long all my hard work will pay off. Things will be perfect and I can live the life I have worked so hard to achieve. lol In reality, I was working myself into an early grave. I was a slave to my business. Instead of my business working for me, it was controlling every aspect of my life. What life? I didn’t have one. No time to enjoy the things that made me happy. No time to be me.

Advertising Why Less is More The whole point of advertising your business is to make it visible to your target audience. however, if your advertisements are overpopulated by technical jargon and superfluous information, you may as well have it written in invisible ink. If there is one rule in advertising, it is to keep it simple. Less is always more. - More likely to attract your target audience. - More likely to build your brand awareness. - More likely to give you a generous return on your investment. So how do I condense my whole business into one concise advertisement that is going to make people take notice? The first thing to consider is your target market. Who is this advertisement talking to? If your advertisement is not relevant to your target market, it doesn’t matter how fresh or snappy it is. It will fall on deaf ears. ‘LOL with confidence’ might make a short advertisement for dentures, but when your target audience is over 65, the majority of them aren’t going to have a clue what the advertisement means. Another point to consider is the advertisement’s ‘stickiness.’ Will people remember your ad and associate it your brand with it? You can guarantee that a rundown of your business history, qualifications and accolades will promptly be forgotten if they are even read in the first place. Cramped copy is not only aesthetically unappealing but more difficult to read. People rarely read a newspaper article from top to bottom so why would they spend time reading an advertisement? Simply put, they won’t. Advertising is a word economy. Every word should contribute to the value of the advertisement. If it doesn’t, cut it out. They say the opposite to love is not hate but indifference. The same can be said of advertising. It won’t be a dislike of your brand that stunts your success, but a complete ignorance of it. To avoid that fate, you have to make your advertising relevant. Make it concise. Make it stick. If you want more information on how to make your brand stick, contact Tolita at 8 Seconds on 0488 117 728 or tolita@8seconds.com.au, or visit www.8seconds.com.au.

“I AM BORED”

- TEENAGER

I am repeating some of the advice of a USA judge to teenagers in 1959. Nothing has changed! “If you are bored, go home, mow the lawn, wash the windows, and learn to cook, get a job, visit the sick, do your homework. The world does not owe you a living. You owe the world something.

- DEVELOP A BACKBONE, NOT A WISHBONE - YOU ARE IMPORTANT AND YOU ARE NEEDED It’s too late to sit around waiting for somebody to do something someday. Someday is now and that somebody is you.” My advice is similar, but let me add some tips for today’s generation of teenagers who spend a lot of their time on the various social media networks and devices. If you are studying for an exam, do a study timetable of 30 minute periods using only 25 minutes per subject, alternating subject types. Spend five minutes between each subject doing physical exercises, preferably outside and feast your tired eyes on green – green trees, grass etc. More than 25 minutes per subject is often time wasted, as you will have exceeded your attention time span.

great ideas!

GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS

Lots of people have dreams and great ideas but I have seen some great ideas fail or never come to fruition just from a lack of preparation. Great ideas or dreams usually cost money so the mistake some people make is to rush off with their great idea to the bank or friends and family expecting to be bank rolled. This is when the bank sends you off to do one of those dreadful business plans that few people seem to understand. So where should you start when you have a great idea? Well, first off, work out who is likely to use your product or service and then work out the demographics in your area/s to determine the number of possible customers you have. From there you can estimate the percentage that may become customers or clients based on how you are going to market your idea. Now, if this sounds difficult it does require some research and the internet is a wonderful place to start, but also similar businesses who are not your direct competitors may be willing to share some information and of course there is always big data.

You may need help and of course many start ups try to save money by not talking to an accountant or solicitor before hand, but it’s a false economy. Good advice can save you time, money and headaches in the future and give you peace of mind. Of course there is a lot more research you need to do, such as set up costs, insurance, registrations, licences etc. However, the better prepared you are the more likely the bank or investors are going to take you seriously. Especially if you can prove that you’ve researched it thoroughly, sought professional advice, and put together realistic figures. This does mean you have to spend some money up front without knowing if you are going to raise the necessary funds. However, that’s when a dream becomes a reality.

YOUR SUCCESS IS OUR BUSINESS At Synergy Professional Accounting Solutions we believe that working together with our clients achieves better results than the client doing their part and then us doing our part in isolation from each other. In fact that is what the word synergy means when more than one input combined with another achieves a better outcome than the single inputs alone. We believe we can make a real difference to business owners that will help them improve business performance and their lifestyle. We are not traditional accountants, we come to see you if that’s more convenient and we don’t charge for every phone call or fax in fact we don’t even keep time sheets. Each project we do is priced up front so you always know how much it will cost. We regularly keep in touch with our clients as well as introducing them to each other when we feel there may be a benefit and we pride ourselves on thinking of outside the box solutions for clients both small and large. This means that as well as providing the full range of standard accounting services, we also offer more customised services to meet our clients' individual needs. At Synergy we're more than accountants. We're like your in-house chief financial officer providing strategic advice and business planning that will add value to your company and help you to improve business competitiveness. We start by really getting to know your business so that our advice is accurate, personalised and relevant. This helps us mentor and support your business management and deliver far more than just a bottom line figure. After thoroughly analysing your business we deliver reports that outline strategic opportunities; provide objective, independent analysis on major purchases or leases; and provide business plans with realistic funding and pricing options. We can assist with bank relationships, cash flow management, off-site financial management and risk management, or provide exit strategies if required. Synergy – working together – achieving results

Atlas Steels kiri smith

Success is not about hocus pocus. It involves focus, focus and the desire to be the best. Kiri Smith was driven to succeed from as far back as she can remember. Growing up in remote areas of the Northern Territory, Kiri was naturally athletic and excelled at sport. Her competitive spirit drove her to succeed and now that determined spark illuminates her passion in business. Kiri is the Service Centre Manager for Atlas Steels, Mackay. She originally entered the organisation in a sales role, but took up the challenge of management when her mentor and manager left for a position in Brisbane. “I love the satisfaction I get from seeing positive results from the team’s hard work. Working with staff and helping to develop their skills is important, both for their personal development but also to ensure that our customers receive the best knowledge and service,” Kiri said. Atlas Steels is a leader in providing stainless and specialty steel products to a wide range of industry. “We have a broad range of products in Mackay, including aluminium, stainless steel and carbon steel piping. Our staff are dedicated to ensuring our clients receive the best, and are knowledgeable about all of our products, so we are proud to offer this complete package, Kiri said. You may not automatically associate the management of a steel business with a young lady, however, Kiri isn’t your average woman. The self-confessed rev-head enjoys powerful engines, and just returned from a trip to the V8 Super Cars in Darwin. Her partner is in the process of building a drag car and Kiri isn’t shy to get under the hood and get greasy. Her love of the outdoors is still a big part of who she is. Kiri enjoys riding a dirt bike and has a jet-ski to enjoy the tropical water during summer. With hard work and passion comes great reward. A lesson Kiri is thankful to have mastered. www.corelife.com.au 17

Butto

Brews, blues and beach grooves

74 bands over three massive days in iconic venues throughout Airlie Beach. It would be a massive undertaking for anyone but, man behind the scenes, known as Butto to his mates, is right in his element. He started a duo, the Budley Brothers, with one of his best mates, Billy Tucker. They played everywhere from Sarina to Bowen and in-between, including Airlie Beach and the islands, but music wasn’t always a big part of his life. Growing up in Toowoomba, Butto was all about playing rugby league. It’s a passion that took him to Perth to play for three years. While in Perth, he picked up a guitar and learned to jam with friends. He had never played the guitar before and, after learning a few chords from his good mate, Terry Hanarahan, he had found a new love. One of his footy mates in Perth was originally from Sarina and, after hearing about the tantalising tropics, he made the move to Mackay, and played a season of league for Sarina. While he no longer laces up the boots, his 10-year old son, Jimmy, loves rugby league, and is showing as much talent and passion as his old man. Butto knew that he wouldn’t be able to play footy forever, so in 1999 he brought his first pub, the Eton Hotel. Over the next few years he owned five more pubs throughout the region, before taking up a position with Lang Entertainment in Sydney. When he returned to Mackay, Butto bought the Old Railway Hotel, and then the Kuttabul Hotel. Live music has always been a prominent feature of these establishments and it had been a 20 year dream to be able to organise a large music festival. Last year, that dream became a reality, with the inaugural Airlie Beach Music Festival.

Butto is also introducing a new festival to take place this October, “Bikes, Bulls, Buggy’s and Bands,” to take place at Donnybrook Station, over the Eton Range. His own band, the Kuttabilly’s, will be performing, where you can see Butto play acoustic guitar. He also lends a hand with the organisation of the Mackay Harbour Race Day. He commented, “There’s no better place on earth for a festival than in Airlie Beach. Great bands and iconic views. There’s nothing better than beats at the beach, where everyone is having a fantastic time. It’s all about having fun and we want locals and visitors to enjoy themselves.” 18 www.corelife.com.au

Peter & Madeline Potter’s Oceanside Motel

Having travelled all over the world, Peter and Madeline Stronge are bringing their sense of adventure, and appreciation for a good night’s sleep, to Mackay. The couple are managing Mackay’s newest motel, Potter’s Oceanside, a fresh and modern motel which focuses on comfort and tranquility. “The location is just perfect and something very unique for Mackay. It’s quiet and tranquil. There’s no inner-city hustle and bustle and not the heavy traffic flow of Nebo Road. Many of our visitors have labelled is as serene, being a short stroll away from Town Beach, yet it’s only a seven minute drive to the airport and three minutes into town” Peter said. Passionate about travel, Peter and Madeline crave new experiences and often explore off the beaten trail, to broaden their horizons when it comes to enjoying other cultures. On one occasion they back-packed through Egypt and visited the Siwa Oasis, the rumoured burial location of Alexander the Great. It took a nine-hour trip from Alexandria to reach the Oasis, on a bus filled with soldiers during Ramadan. In Shanghai, they witnessed a full lunar eclipse at 9:30am, which plunged the city into darkness. Seeing the city light up as if it was midnight was a spectacular occurrence.

Their cultural outreach extended to hosting exchange students while living in Brisbane. They have hosted students from both America and Japan, learning a great deal about the culture, invaluable experience for the vast differences they will encounter through their motel guests. A restful and comfortable stay is top priority at Potter’s Oceanside, with every room appointed with new linen and towels, king-sized beds and large flat screen televisions. 20 channels of Foxtel are also available in every room, a service which no other motel in Mackay provides. The motel features three rooms that cater for people with disabilities, as well as one large room, which is ideal for a bridal party getting ready the morning of the big day. A 24 hour check-in means there’s no need to rush and free WiFi allows guests to connect with the world. A development in late August will include the installation of a coffee machine, with dine-in and takeaway coffees available to the public. Enjoy a cup of java pool-side or take it to nearby Iluka Park to enjoy. With the successful opening of Mackay’s newest motel, the couple hope to have time spare to enjoy a few rounds of golf and watch a game or two of rugby.

It’s more than fitness, it’s a way of life. It’s the challenging training philosophy which is getting more people off the couch and into the best shape of their lives. It’s CrossFit and local couple Kyle (Teale), and Bek Kerr-Teale, are bringing the fitness heat to the Whitsundays. Teale was introduced to the philosophy of CrossFit when he served in the Australian Army. Originally from the Gold Coast, Teale made the decision when he was 19 years old to give his all to his country. He signed up with 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, in Townsville. One year into his service, a weekend with mates in the Whitsundays led him to meet Bek, a local real estate agent. Within six months, Teale got down on bended knee, on Valentine’s Day, to ask Bek to be his wife. He served nine months in Afghanistan, before returning home. When his four years of service were complete, he moved to the Whitsundays and married Bek at beautiful Cape Gloucester. Teale studied with Fitnation to become a personal trainer and furthered his knowledge by becoming a Level one CrossFit trainer. Last year in July, he stepped away from the local gym to become a mobile personal trainer, made possible by his reputation for results. Encouraged by his passionate following of clients, he and Bek developed CrossFit 4802, an almost 300m2 CrossFit facility in Cannonvale. Bek looks after the administration and marketing side of the business but, not one to sit back and watch, she also completed her Level one CrossFit qualification, so she is able to lead training groups. Amazingly, Bek still works full-time as a real estate agent, alongside her mother, Ellen. While Bek had dabbled in a few sports, she never considered herself to be an athlete until she became entrenched in CrossFit. “I went from being someone who hardly ever broke out in a sweat, to someone who would finish a workout laying in a pool of sweat, with a smile on my face. I’m proof of how CrossFit has the ability to challenge, change and empower its athletes,” Bek said. CrossFit is a passion the couple share. Teale believes it is what he is destined to do and encourages more people to lift the bar on their health and fitness. “Walking through the door is the hardest part, you’ll thank yourself that you did.” 20 www.corelife.com.au

Putting your best face forward starts with fueling the fire from within, a subject that Mackay Skin Clinic manager, Toula Karambasis, is passionate about. “When you’re alive on the inside, you’re glowing on the outside. Being healthy and happy is the best gift you can ever give yourself”. Toula has dedicated a significant amount of time towards understanding the science of optimal health. A subject which has changed the way she lives her life. “We live in a toxic world and the food we eat, is not enough to sustain optimal health. Unless we cleanse inside, we can’t expect our outside to deliver to its full potential,” she said. Nutritional food and cleansing internally will reflect and deliver a glowing healthy exterior.

Mirror, Mirror

Toula Karambasis

Her father was a descendant of Greece and immigrated to Australia when he was 16. He arrived with little more than a few coins in his pocket. However, through hard work and determination he built a future for his family. This hard-working personality rubbed off on Toula, who has never been afraid to roll up her sleeves, and start from the bottom to achieve success. “I am dedicated to delivering results and that comes from a passion for what I do. I’ve raised a family, I have two daughters who are now grown, and I’ve never stopped working. “No matter what I’ve done in life, I’ve been hands-on and have learned through experience. I believe you need to carry that passion for who you are and what you do to deliver a service with integrity and respect.” It is this show of respect and compassion that clients of Mackay Skin Clinic value. “Many of our clients visit us at a time that may be an emotional or fragile time of their life and we are mindful and compassionate of any problems they may be experiencing. For this reason, we don’t just sell a product or a service as a quick fix. “We offer a thorough skin analysis consultation to understand each person on a totally individual basis. We have our own doctor, John Goldston, who is on-hand if we ever need medical advice. We know our products, we have seen their results, and it is this complete package that gives our clients peace of mind,” Toula said. Discover how the feeling of youth is within your grasp. Kenny

Airlie electronics There’s no water on earth like the aquamarine beauty of the Whitsundays and, to enjoy it at its best, you’ll want peace of mind that your vessel’s electrical and electronics are ship-shape. Leaders in the marine electrical and electronics industry, Airlie Electronics will ensure you are ready for your next boating adventure, keeping you and your family safer on the water. Kenny Nicoll grew up in South Africa and learned the marine electrical trade after leaving school. An avid rugby union fan, Kenny also has enjoyed motor GP for as long as he can remember. He rode motorcross from a young age, and competed in mountain biking, but now these sports, along with fishing, are recreational hobbies he enjoys. He moved with his family from Durban to Queensland, and was later attracted to the beauty and lifestyle available in Airlie Beach. His eldest daughter, Demi, works for Virgin Australia at Proserpine Airport, and his younger daughter, Chelsea, attends Whitsunday Christian College. “The girls enjoy getting out on the boat when we can and, we fish and snorkel together as a family. It’s a fantastic lifestyle. One we all treasure very much,” Kenny said. In 2010, Kenny and his business partner, Banitska Ford, started their own electrical and electronics marine business, Airlie Electronics. They saw a gap in the market for quality workmanship and exceptional customer service and knew the business would flourish at Abell Point Marina.

“We know that boaties want to spend as much time on the water as they can, so we aim to provide an efficient service, without compromising attention to detail. Our electrical and electronics work is top quality. It needs to be in a location like the Whitsundays. Our reputation is everything. “This is why we take pride in our staff too. We surround ourselves with positive people, who love this job as much as we do. We have staff who have been working with me for more than 15 years now, which is very humbling. Our customers enjoy seeing friendly and familiar faces, which is why they return,” Kenny said. Not only do they have a reputation for being the best in the business, Airlie Electronics will beat any written quote. Whether it’s repairs, servicing or supplying top of the range electrical and electronics, Airlie Electronics provide affordability to suit your boating needs, and exceptional service every time.

Home Sweet Home

Peter & Helen

Benjamin Franklin once said, “A house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body.” Our homes are a retreat from the stress of everyday life. They warm us up, cool us down, relax us and invigorate us, which is why Adenbrook Homes is meticulous about providing the kind of house you want to live in. Peter and Helen Greenslade are your local Adenbrook Homes team. They both grew up in Kingaroy, north-west of Brisbane, and fell in love soon after completing high school. The couple attended a KISS concert in Brisbane before they were married and were able to experience the thrill again last year when KISS performed in Mackay. Now married for more than 30 years and with their two daughters grown up and left home, Peter and Helen are due to become grandparents in the next few months. “Having gone through many stages of life together, we understand that living spaces have different needs as families grow and change. We remember our first home and what an exciting time it was for us. We also had a growing home when the children were young and then, as they got older, we had the very hectic ‘working with teenagers’ home. Now we have an empty nest and reflect on how different our home is at this stage of our life,” Helen said. When Peter left high school, he began an apprenticeship with his father, a builder with a profound reputation for quality and perfectionism. Peter worked with his father for 12 years, in which time he picked up his dad’s passion to provide super quality and fine workmanship. Peter also places emphasis on remaining hands-on within the business, from the initial design and consultation phase through to handing over the keys upon completion. On his 50th birthday, Peter was gifted Norby, the beloved family bulldog. Helen commented, “They say that a pet can resemble its owner but we think Norby takes this a little too far. If Peter has a sore leg, Norby develops a limp. If he has a sore eye, then Norby will have a sympathetic runny eye as well. He is a complete clown and would be happy to play all day if we had the time. “We know and care about our local community and understand the changing needs of growing families, so we love to help locals settle in to their new homes – whether they are starting their stories or emptying their nests!”

Divalicious Sarah Homburg

Coming from a long line of law professionals, Sarah Homburg was meant to follow in her father’s footsteps. However, never one to follow the rules, Sarah chose a different interpretation. Her family name of Homburg originated in Germany, which translates to “Hat with a feather or feathers.” Naturally, Sarah’s fashion crush led her heart to owning her own boutique, Divalicious, which now specialises in one-of-a-kind, trés chic fascinators. “The Urban Dictionary’s definition of Divalicious represented my boutique beautifully. ‘The supreme degree of elegance, independence and love, all wrapped into one’. My top label, Wheels and Dollbaby, was very Parisian and rock’n’roll which influenced my boutique’s style to be feminine and glamourous, with a sex-kitten pin-up and rock-chick edge,” Sarah said.

accessory that you know is entirely your own. Each design is as unique as the diva who loves her. Nobody shall suffer the fashion faux pas of seeing another piece quite like hers on anyone else, anywhere in the world,” Sarah said. A part of Sarah’s edginess can be attributed to her metal-loving dad, who owned an impressive collection of metal albums while Sarah was growing up. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin are favourites of hers from that era and she attends as many metal concerts with her sisters as she can. She said, “Guns and Roses corrupted me in 1987 and I’ve loved the genre ever since. I saw the original line up of Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne last year which was amazing as no one thought they’d ever get back together. “I spent time backstage at the Kiss concert last year and, afterward visited Gene Simmons’s wife, Shannon Tweed, in their trailer. She chose one of my turquoise and ruby red fascinators to take home with her, which was such an honour.”

Her flair for fascinators came purely from natural talent and having a great eye for colour. She began designing fascinators to match her suave and swanky race-day frocks, but when the fascinators began to attract more attention than the dresses, she knew it was an opportunity to develop something truly unique.

Sarah’s head candy featured in a music video for the band “Sun of Agun,” in Los Angeles, a large headdress with cascading black tulle, pheasant feathers and a possum skull. Australian beauty queen and actress, Jennifer Hawkins, also owns a Divalicious creation.

“My love for all things vintage, Parisian, burlesque and edgy comes through in my design style. I love feathers and the dominant use they have had in headwear fashion throughout the ages.

Sarah said, “A clairvoyant once said my past life was in burlesque. I could have been a designer for the Moulin Rouge!” Her glamourous fascinators will feature at ‘Frocktails’ fashion show, at the Whitsunday Arts and Cultural Centre, this August.

“It’s head candy for the suave and swanky, and in a world of ever-increasing mass-production, it’s nice to own a beautiful 24 www.corelife.com.au

another great piece of infrastructure for all to enjoy

Boardwalk a retail coup for Airlie Beach Port of Airlie’s newly completed boardwalk has expanded the Airlie Beach CBD to the water’s edge in a significant retail coup for the town. The boardwalk follows the edge of the Port of Airlie marina from the soon-to-be-completed Cruise Whitsundays’ maritime terminal, past The Boathouse by Outrigger, and its associated retail strip, and conveniently connects pedestrians to the heart of Airlie Beach. Port of Airlie Sales Manager, Andrew Forster, said the boardwalk facilitated the seamless integration of Airlie Beach’s main street with Port of Airlie’s modern new facilities. In effect, the boardwalk has made the marina an extension of the CBD. “With the impending opening of Cruise Whitsundays’ maritime terminal and associated transit hub mid this year, local retailers are looking forward to the increased connectivity the boardwalk will no doubt bring,” Mr Forster said. “This boardwalk is a major conduit enhancing the position of Airlie Beach as a destination in its own right. Day-tripping tourists arriving at Port of Airlie can now walk directly into the centre of Airlie Beach. “Residents of Port of Airlie are also enjoying the benefits of the boardwalk, being only a short walk from Woolworths and other Airlie Beach CBD shops and services.” Among the retailers at Port of Airlie in direct and easy access of Airlie Beach’s local and tourist populations (and who now see themselves as an extension of the CBD retail offering) are a variety of men’s and ladies’

fashion outlets, casual coffee spots, watering holes and fine dining options. Denman’s Cellars owners, Ben and Daniel Hayman, said their unique beer and tapas bar was thriving on the foot traffic the boardwalk was bringing to them – so much so that the Haymans are in fact expanding their business into adjoining premises. The brothers said the stunning view from their bar across the boardwalk and out to the marina was an added bonus. Aimer Accessory’s owner, Meredith Moloney, was thrilled to see the boardwalk project now complete. “With the Cruise Whitsundays relocation endorsing this area as the transit hub for Airlie Beach, we look forward to even more abundant foot traffic across our doorstep and seeing Airlie Beach’s residents and guests enjoy the buzz that Port of Airlie has to offer,” Ms Moloney said. The new Port of Airlie boardwalk is the next major link in the Bicentennial Boardwalk project. It provides improved access to Boathaven Beach and Headland Park while being part of Whitsunday Regional Council’s vision for the future. The Port of Airlie boardwalk is the final piece, completing the water’s edge pedestrian pathway from Bicentennial Walk in Cannonvale, through to Airlie Beach and on to Jubilee Pocket. Offering exquisite up-close views of the Whitsundays’ famous azure water and various luxury watercraft, the Port of Airlie boardwalk is a tourism drawcard in itself. “This public boardwalk really is another great piece of infrastructure for all to enjoy,” Mr Forster said. Property market buoyed by investor demand While the investment market growing, the percentage of individual investors is shrinking According to new research conducted by Mortgage Choice, investors currently account for just over 30 per cent of all new loans written – significantly higher than the 27 per cent recorded just 12 months ago. Local Mortgage Choice Graham Bowling said it is unsurprising to see a spike in investor activity as, according to the company’s latest First Time Investor survey, this type of buyer not only sees property as a lucrative investment but as a way to future proof their wealth. “In Mortgage Choice’s recent First Time Investor survey respondents were asked what their key motivators were for buying an investment property and almost 78.9 per cent of Queensland respondents said they would purchase an investment property to set themselves up financially for the future,” Graham said.

“In addition, 56.9 per cent of first time investors in QLD said they see more benefit in investments such as property, than they do in the share market.” Mr last Bowling said it is good to see Queenslanders taking the right attitude towards property investment. “First time investors do not see property investment as a quick win, but as part of their long-term financial strategy,” he said.

Graham bowling

But while investor activity as a whole is on the rise, it seems rising property prices are making it harder for QLD investors to buy alone. According to the data, just 21.6 per cent of QLD first time investors said they would purchase an investment property by themselves. Mr Bowling said rising property prices were largely to blame for the fact that QLD first time investors are purchasing alone. “Because of this, it has become harder for individuals to save a deposit and jump onto the property ladder alone.” If you would like to learn more about your home loan or financial advice options, call 4957 7786 or visit www.mortgagechoice.com.au/graham.bowling

Mackay’s real estate market It’s just a correction phase? Dee Mangion

Values tend to rise in waves.

In some years there will be strong growth, in others there will be no growth, in every property cycle there are times when property values fall. We are currently seeing this in Mackay though people need to remain positive and keep in mind we experienced a quick growth in a short space of time. I think everyone needs to accept the property market in Mackay is in a correction phase.

Mining regions have a history of being a volatile market! The positive side I see to Mackay’s property market

At open home inspections I’ve had many buyers tell me it’s only NOW they can qualify to get finance for a home and afford the repayments. They also say it’s great to have so much choice. First home owners saving for deposits are achieving this more comfortably without the high rental costs. In some cases some have told me they are banking

around $200 extra a week towards their home deposits savings. If the price is right, properties ARE selling... remember the consumer dictates the market. If you’re selling to upgrade, the difference in dollars you may not achieve in your sale may be gained in the value of your new purchase. Be pro active. Accept the current market and adapt. If you’re a landlord and don’t want to sell.... less rent is better than no rent. If you’re an investor or owner occupier, perhaps sell your existing property and re invest in another property more suited to your current financial situation. Remember, it won’t last forever.....be proactive. It’s up to you if you want to look at the glass half full or half empty! Feel free to call or email if you would like to discuss the current value of your property and more information on what the Mackay property market is doing.

Travelling in the car from Mackay to the Sunshine Coast was not such a fun time. In January 2014, we had 6 of our 7 seats in the car full, and didn’t realise that greasy food, along with staring at an iPad could make one child so ill that she vomited. Thank god for the clip seal packets and a towel. With her father hanging out the window gagging, we had to keep driving before we could pull over to the side of the road. I was living in charters towers with my family at the time. I decided to take my nine-year-old son on a day trip to Townsville. About 30 minutes into the night drive home from Townsville, I noticed a 4wd car speeding up behind us. I didn’t really think much of it until he started driving up beside us, then in front of us, then ramming and pushing us of the road. In disbelief I started to evaluate my situation and knew I was in trouble. Trying to keep it together for my son, who was already terrified I got him to call my husband for advice. He told us to pull into a farmhouse, turn our lights off and wait it out. Luckily it worked. It was definitely a wolf creek moment! jackie, Dames & Dandies

We had planned many adventures on our trip to Bali but it wasn’t losing my sister in the rapids whilst white water rafting, dropping my bike into the rice paddy irrigation system (whilst on it!) or our friend Munchie eating something so disgusting that he drank the pool water to get the taste out of his mouth (great diarrheic) that resulted in a trip for medical help! It was an innocent walk in the monkey forest. Of all things on this planet to be allergic too, I now know I’m allergic to MONKEYS! Wish I’d known that before letting him sit on my shoulder. Oh and the button to “open the train doors” from Brisbane domestic airport to international – is green not RED. But that’s another story! norina, iconic bride photography

A DIFFERENT VIEW Life can deal out its fair share of ups and downs but, as Lachlan Condon explains, it’s about getting back on your feet after the punches are thrown. Lachlan had a promising career in motorcross when a series of injuries crushed his dreams of turning pro. His father brought him his first bike when he was six years old and he loved riding ever since. He wasn’t a fan of academia and found school to be boring, so when he arrived home in the afternoons, his mum would encourage him to bounce on the trampoline for a couple of hours to expel his pent-up energy. He loved most sports, and played soccer as a youngster, but his passion was in motorcross, where he could push himself to ride harder and faster. With his first job, he purchased a YZ125 to start racing. “What you give is what you get out, so with motorcross, I could train when I wanted and ride as hard as I could. You start alone and finish the same way, with big wins and big falls. You, and you alone, are accountable for your result and I liked that,” Lachlan said. He moved to Bunderberg when he was 17 and bought a YZ250. He had his first major spill when he hit a telephone pole traveling at 100km/hr. When he woke from his accident, he reassessed his future and decided that he wanted to get serious about his racing. It took him 12 months of recovery, but he went on to win the open class championships in Bundaberg. He was approached by a Honda rep, who had seen him race and offered Lachlan a sponsorship package, which included a new bike. Lachlan rode the Queensland Sunshine State series as a sponsored rider and, despite missing two rounds, finished 5th out of approximately 120 riders. He then rode for Kawasaki in 2004, but tore ligaments in his right arm at the Queensland state titles. The jump from sponsored rider to pro was a big leap, which involved massive financial backing, one that was too big for Lachlan to manage, so 2004 was his last year racing 42 www.corelife.com.au

motorcross. He had dabbled in the art of freestyle and, during his racing days, would compete in the halftime ‘Expression Session’, where he achieved impressive results. Lachlan’s passion for freestyle had always been a part of him. In 1999, before he moved to Bundaberg, he organised to publically jump the Mackay skate bowl, conquering a massive jump of approximately 80 feet. Lachlan began competing in freestyle shows with mate Clint Moore, a freestyle rider from Bundaberg who has competed globally with Nitro Circus. They would practice for hours on end at a foam pit on Clint’s farm. “I crashed far more backflips than I ever landed, but I had conquered it and that was the goal,” Lachlan said. At a competition in Clermont, Lachlan finished second to Jono Porter, a well-known freestyle motorcrosser and former Australian champion, who later tragically died in a racing accident in 2004. Lachlan retired from racing in 2004, and moved home to Mackay the following year. In 2009, Lachlan and Clint were set to feature at a Mackay X Kings show when tragedy hit six weeks before the event. “At a press day, we were performing for a cover shot for a magazine, when I didn’t stick my landing and went over the handlebars. I broke my left femur. Clint landed his backflip but then crashed into me, breaking his wrist. I didn’t touch a motorbike for three years after that, until I got my femur rod out,” Lachlan said. His time in hospital, and time away from the motorcross scene, allowed Lachlan to reflect on his future. His world had crumbled. He could no longer do what he loved, and he soon discovered who his real friends were, when he wasn’t able to be a part of the riding crew. He put his head down, worked hard as a mechanic and purchased his first property. He turned his attention toward restoring classic bikes while he worked as a mechanic, but received another devastating blow in April of this year, by injuring his back at work. He required an operation which led to seven weeks on his back in recovery but, as Lachlan explains, it was the opportunity for him to

liberate himself from what had been holding him back. “After my operation, I had a life-changing moment that liberated me from my ignorance. I had mistreated myself, and others. Partying, girls, booze and drugs went hand-in-hand and I did a lot of things I’m not proud of. I was judgmental of people based on their appearance but I’ve been shown that acceptance of others is the best way to be accepting of yourself. “I was absorbed by ego and wasn’t aware of what was around me. I’ve been guided to see more, feel more and become open to more. Ignorance is a choice, and it’s easy to live being ignorant, but to open your heart and accept yourself for who you truly are, is to love who you are, opening up the ability to love others.” Lachlan’s self-discovery led him to invest in a block of land at the Port of Airlie. The location felt spiritually right for Lachlan, who was returning to his birthplace. The waterfront location appealed to his plans for the future, a new beginning. “You’re either ready to catch the train, or you watch it go by. Even if things seem to be falling apart, it’s important to realise that everything is perfect and everything is exactly as it is meant to be. “The answer is always right in front of you, you just need to be prepared to reach out and grab it.”

Get clever with your carry-on You’re on the holiday of a lifetime and you’ve shopped like there’s no tomorrow. How on earth will you get all of these holiday mementos home?

weighty items. Jewellery and other small souvenirs could fit into your handbag, eliminating one or two kilograms from your suitcase.

With increasing trends towards airlines charging for check-in luggage, and steep penalty charges for over-weight suitcases, it has never been more valuable to learn the secrets of packing to full capacity in your carry-on.

If you are carrying your laptop bag, think about what else you can slide in there. Magazines, books, stationary, camera charging cords.

Rules for packing into carry-on luggage can be stringent, especially for international travel, but once you understand the ins and outs of what is and isn’t allowed, you’ll be surprised at how much you can take on the plane with you. Firstly, ensure that your hand luggage complies with your airline’s dimension rules. It must fit easily into an overhead compartment, or under the seat in front of you. The first point to remember is that you are actually allowed to take two items on the plane with you. One main piece of hand luggage and an additional smaller piece, such as a handbag or laptop case. So it makes sense to take a large handbag, one that will fit everything you will want to access on the plane. Wallet, sunglasses, cell phone, essential medication and passport. Now look at what else you need to pack and isolate small,

Any liquid or gel items that you have, which are in a container of 100ml or less, you can place in a clear plastic bag, such as a ziplock bag, and place in your hand luggage. Other heavy items, such as shoes, hairbrush, camera, souvenirs. These can go in your hand luggage, packed tightly with clothes. Some airline carriers have heavier carry-on allocations than others, and surprisingly, it is frequently the budget airlines that allow you to carry more. Flying economy class from Australia, Qantas and Virgin regularly only allow 7kg of hand-luggage, however Tiger and Jetstar usually allow up to 10kg. By isolating your heavier items and stashing them in your carry-on, it is possible to re-allocate more than 5kg of weight from your packed luggage to your carry-on, saving you hefty excess baggage fees. Bon Voyage and happy travelling!

FANTASTIC & FREAKISH FESTIVALS The next time you are jet-setting to an exotic location, ditch some of the predictable sight-seeing activities and lock in a culturally shocking festival for fun.

From watching gigantic phallic symbols being carried down the streets of Kawasaki in Japan, to eating bull’s testicles in Montana, USA, the world is full of eye-opening, bizarre festivals and traditions. Here are our top five jawdropping jaunts.

Monkey Buffet Festival

Lopburi, Thailand Imagine tonnes of food spread across tables throughout a town just to be devoured by hundreds of monkeys. This bizarre annual tradition is held to say thank you to the long-tailed macaques which inhabit the village, bringing thousands of tourists each year to witness the spectacle.

Hadaka Matsuri (Naked Festival)

Various cities, Japan Getting naked in Japan isn’t as eye-opening as in western culture, with communal masses bathing together in geothermal hot springs. This ancient purification ceremony sees more than 10,000 men in loin cloths, known as a Japanese fundoshi, vie for the title of “the lucky man,” by catching a symbolic stick. The most famous of the naked festivals is the Saidai-ji Eyo Hadaka Matsuri in the city of Okayama.

44 www.corelife.com.au

The Testicle Festival

Clinton, Montana, USA Booze, balls and breasts are celebrated in this brash adults-only festival at Rock Creek Lodge in Montana. Festivities revolve around eating bull’s testicles, known as ‘Rocky Mountain Oysters’, with oil wrestling, wet t-shirt competitions and ‘No Panty Wednesday’ also among the favourite exhibitions at this beer-soaked extravaganza.

Festival of the Steel Phallus Kawasaki, Japan

It’s not often you come across a parade where the main attraction is a pink penis statue. However, at Kanamara Matsuri, known as the Penis Festival, gatherers celebrate fertility and raise awareness for safe sex. Revelers suck on penis lollipops, buy penis-themed memorabilia and pose with phallic sculptures, a truly bizarre sight.

Moose Dropping Festival

Talkeetna, Alaska Getting messy with moose droppings sounds like the daftest tradition of all. However, in the Alaskan town of Talkeetna, they celebrate the state’s official animal by collecting, selling, throwing and dropping the animal’s excrement. One particular event sees moose droppings dropped from hot air balloons in an attempt to hit targets on the ground. You can even purchase baked and varnished droppings as a memorable memento of your moose mischief.

Bucket-List

road trips The freedom of exploring whatever you like and the ability to do as you choose. This is the appeal of the epic road trip, where you are only limited by where the roads can take you.

Route 66

United States of America

Rugged desserts and Wild West saloons, Hollywood glitz and glamour, the lights of Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. The inspiration for a Rolling Stones’ classic, Route 66 symbolises the American dream of adventure and freedom. The resting place of Abraham Lincoln, Arizona’s Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park, the Mississippi River, Cadillac Ranch, Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park and the world’s largest Catsup bottle. Route 66 is a culmination of natural beauty and broad horizons with quirky and memorable attractions.

46 www.corelife.com.au

Extending nearly 4,000km from Chicago to Los Angeles, the journey exhibits retro America at its best, with classic diners and soda fountains. You’ll feel as though you stepped back into the 1950’s, and that’s all part of the appeal. That said, there’s no better mode of transportation for driving “The Mother Road” than a Cadillac convertible. The best time of year to travel is in the summer, between May and September, to make the most of summer holiday festivals and to avoid snow on the roads. Be sure to join an automobile club in case you need assistance, and carry a spare tyre in the back. Allow at least two weeks to complete this epic journey across the heart of America.

Spectacular South Island New Zealand

The South Island of New Zealand is one of the most diverse and changing landscapes in the world, from braided rivers and rolling green hills, to alpine tussock, glaciers and turquoise-blue lakes. Begin your journey in Christchurch, where old English gardens contract with container-based shopping malls and pop-up bars, a modern and funky new atmosphere since the city’s re-build following the 2011 February earthquake. Drive past farmland, high-country tussock and snow-capped mountains to Lake Tekapo and photograph the world famous Church of the Good Shepherd. Hug the shores of the creamy turquioise waters of Lake Pukaki and view Australasia’s highest mountain, Mt Cook. Excite your senses in the alpine resort town of Queenstown, a sophisticated mecca for extreme sports and adrenalin rush activities. Take a day trip to cruise the majestic Milford Sound, one of the most tranquil and un-touched

feature places on earth. Delve into the rugged West Coast, lush with fern-filled forests. Fox and Franz Josef Glacier is the only location in the world outside of Argentina where ice meets the rainforest. Marvel at the limestone formations that create the impressive Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, before continuing to New Zealand’s sunniest regions, Nelson and Marlborough. Indulge your taste buds amongst a gourmet paradise, where fine wine, specialty beer, green-lipped mussels and fresh orchard fruit can all be found in close proximity. Lose yourself in the Marlborough Sounds, a spectacular maze of coves and islands. Drive the ocean-side coast of Kaikoura and feast on freshly cooked crayfish on the side of the road. Go on a whale watching tour, and then end your journey in the spa-resort surrounds of Hanmer Springs, soaking in the soothing thermal water.

500km is the distance from Tennant Creek to Alice Springs, where aboriginal cultural sights and early settlement relics abound. See one of the Territory’s most spectacular landmarks, the balancing Devils Marbles. Sail over the Spinifex Plains in a hot air balloon or browse contemporary Aboriginal art along Todd Mall. Many people think that Uluru is close to Alice Springs, but it is actually still a 470km drive to the famous red monolith. Do a dawn camel trek around Uluru and wander between the steep russet domes of nearby Kata Tjura. With cooler day time temperatures of 27 to 32 degrees, the dry season is the favoured time to drive to the red centre, from May to October. Take additional food and water for your journey, as in some of the remote areas, the next town may be a substantial drive away.

The most pleasant time to visit is from February through until April, although if you want snow-capped scenery, then August and September are good choices. However, it can still snow at this time of year, so equip yourself with chains for your tyres.

Outback Adventure Darwin to Uluru (Ayers Rock)

A Northern Territory road trip is an essential outback experience, and the most magical of journeys is from Darwin to Ayers Rock. Drive 260km from Darwin to Kakadu National Park, a World-Heritage listed site. Enjoy a cruise on the Adelaide River Queen to witness the famous jumping crocodiles, view the beautiful Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls, and view the Nanguluwur Rock-Art Gallery. Drive 300km to Katherine, through the gold-mining town of Pine Creek. Explore the famous Nitmiluk National Park and hire a canoe on the Katherine Gorge. View the stunning Edith Falls and marvel at the mysterious Cutta Cutta Caves. The drive from Katherine to Tennant Creek is 670km, so be sure to begin your day early. Here is when you start to see the early signs of entering the arid ‘Red Centre’ of Australia. Bathe in the warm thermal waters of Mataranka under the dappled light of paperbark and palm forest. Then enjoy a cold refreshment at Daly Waters Pub, the oldest pub in the Territory. www.corelife.com.au 47

Billfish

Where to find them and how to set up a trolling spread.

Trolling is the most productive way of catching marlin or sailfish. Trolling can consist of either artificial lures or rigged dead baits or both! In some instances slow trolling live baits is also a very deadly method but we will mainly talk about lures as this is the most popular. Trolling lures, or “pushers”, would be the most common way of targeting billfish. A pusher comes in a variety of sizes and colours but basic design is similar with a head and a trailing skirt with your leader coming down through the centre of the head, which then attaches to your hook or hooks. The lure’s head are often different shapes to give the lure a certain action. Some are big and cup faced others long and slender for speed and so on. Outriggers are an important part to the billfisherman’s boat. If you don’t have them, start saving for a pair as they ensure your lure spread is nice and wide and makes trolling so much easier and affective. A good spread of lures will usually consist of 5 outfits, which will consist of 2 on the out riggers (one lure each side), 2 short and one long down the middle. The lure spread is usually set up with the lures at staggered lengths from the boat. Names to coincide with this are long rigger, short rigger, long flat, short flat and the last one down, the middle furtherest back, is known as shotgun. Prior to setting up your spread of lures you need to select your lures. This is an article in itself as there are 100’s of types and colours. What I can say, is though, that every lure has caught fish in any position behind the boat so don’t get too concerned. There is an old rule that lighter/brighter colours (pinks, lumos etc) work best on the riggers and shotgun and the darker lures (blues, blacks, purples etc) closer to the boat. Probably, what’s more important is that you have the lure working correctly once you’re all setup. Speed is a critical factor

with trolling lures. Too much speed and you will find your lure continually blowing out of the water and fouling up in its own hooks. Too slow and you will find the lure is lazy in the water with little action so lacking the excitement to entice a billfish bite. “Size does matter”!! With lures, and selecting lures, another factor you need to consider is matching your lure (or more importantly your hook size) to the line class you are using. There is no use trolling a 12 inch lure that is running a double 10/0 hook rig on 15kg line as you will never set those big hooks into the boney mouth of a billfish with that light line. For light tackle (10-15kg) a lure in the 6-10 inch range with either single or double hook arrangement is a good starting point but you MUST!!! ensure the hooks are razor sharp otherwise you are wasting your time! SO, you have your spread set up, where do we go? There are several “traditional” grounds for chasing billfish in the Whitsundays but they can be found also anywhere, as long as the water is reasonably clean and there is some kind of food supply. Usually productive spots are Hayman island (dolphin point) the northern side of Hook Island, Leeper shoal (eastern side of border island) and, what’s known as “the oval”, ¾ way to the reef from Hamilton island. When the conditions are suitable even, Pioneer Rocks, north Molle Island and even out the front of Shute hrb billfish have been caught. North of Airlie beach there are some good grounds also with Gumbrel Island, Holbourne Island and all the way up to Cape Upstart. This is a good starting point. We could talk about teasers, switch baits, downriggers, finding bait schools lots of other stuff but we would be here forever! Best to talk to the guys at your local tackle shop or join a local fishing club. They will have more information.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Quadrifoglio Verde

Yes, I’ll admit the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde is quite a mouthful if you’re not familiar with the Italian language, but don’t let the name deter you.

The Quadrifoglio Verde, otherwise known to us Aussies as the QV, is Alfa Romeos top of the line Giuliettas. Quadrifoglio Verde translates as four leaf clover, which we all know denotes good luck. For this very reason, Alfa Romeo has autographed their racing cars with a four leaf clover badge for many years. The Giulietta is carrying the Quadrifoglio Verde into a new era for the everyday driver. The Giulietta QV is a perfect combination of sportiness and contemporary charm. Drivers will enjoy high performance speed of 173kW and 1750 direct injection turbo petrol engine with dual continuous variable valve timing and turbocharger with scavenging system and intercooler. The interior reflects the sporty drive of the Giulietta QV with its aluminium sports pedals and racey black leather and microfiber seating with red stitching and leather wrapped steering wheel to match. As well as a high performance drive, the Giulietta QV has all the luxuries one would expect including, Blue&Me connectivity allowing hands free calls, 8 speaker sound system with radio controls on the steering wheel. “The 90th anniversary of the ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ (green four-leaf clover), the legendary symbol that has identified some of Alfa Romeo’s sportiest 50 www.corelife.com.au

models, its being celebrated this year. That refers not only to the cars, which have been taken to the world’s race circuits, but also to certain special production versions. The first Alfa Romeo car to be adorned with the Quadrifoglio Verde was Ugo Sivocci’s RL, in which he won the 14th edition of the Targa Florio in 1923. Since then, all of Alfa Romeo racing cars have been distinguished by the emblem and renowned lucky charm known throughout the world, the same which characterised certain standard production Alfa Romeo from the 1960s onwards. The ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ returns to the Giulietta. The latest model has assumed a place in the tradition of the best Alfa Romeos, drawing on the heritage of dynamic performance, without compromising on efficiency, respect for the environment and convenience in everyday use. A sports tradition that lives on in the latest Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV. Its performance is the result of its 173kW 1750 direct injection turbopetrol engine with dual continuous variable valve timing and turbocharger with scavenging system and intercooler. The weight/power ratio of 5.6 kg/HP, the sports geometry with lowered suspension and the powerful braking system ensure the handling and performance of a racing vehicle on the road.” Contact the local team at Goodalls Mackay for a test drive today! 4968 0111

Qiandao Lake Zhejiang, China

Crystal clear water, verdant islands and dazzling caves make Qiandao Lake one of China’s best kept secrets. This man-made lake is also known as ‘Thousand Island Lake,’ due to 1,078 jade-like islands scattered throughout the waterscape. It is a myriad of natural and scenic charm, with alluring mountain peaks in the distance. 150 kilometers from the city of Hangzhou, and 360km from the city of Shanghai, this resplendent pearl on the Hangzhou-Huangshan Mountain tourist route is within a day’s drive from international airports, yet upon arrival, can feel a world away from civilisation. This man-made water feature is home to one of the world’s most intriguing archaeolilogical features, the sunken ancient cities of Shi Cheng and He Cheng, referred to as China’s Atlantis. Diving an ancient city is a unique experience, unlike any other diving site, due to the perfect conservation of the city remains. Take a cable-car ride on Meifeng Island to the highest peak for a bird’s-eye view across the beautiful islands. Dine on fresh seafood on Santan Island and enjoy a folk dance or tea ceremony. Visit Monkey Island for the chance to carefully interact with the island’s monkey population, and enjoy an island-hopping cruise to view the hidden temples, caves and other attractions which make this area fascinating.

When to visit

The best time to visit, as recommended by locals, is from September to November, with little rain and an average temperature of 12 to 18 degrees Celsius, or enjoy temperatures that reach the mid-thirties during the months of July and August.

Kyoto Japan

Home to the emperor’s residence from 794 to 1868 and formerly Japan’s capital city, Kyoto is vast in terms of its splendour and cultural heritage, thanks to the material endowment as Japan’s imperial capital. Known for its stunning beauty, Kyoto attracts visitors to marvel at majestic palaces, gaze at delicate cherry blossoms and view ancient traditions, somewhat lost in many other areas of modern Japan. With more than 1000 Buddhist temples, ancient architecture is a draw card Kyoto, from the cavernous expanse of Higashi Hongan-ji to the Fushimi-Inari-Taisha shrine. Kyoto itself is home to 14 historic monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Choose from one of 140 bath houses and join the locals in asento, for a rejuvenating soak. Sample sake from the 400 year old Gekkeikan Brewery in the Fushimi area of Southern Kyoto and then enjoy the invigorating flavours from a traditional tea ceremony.

When to visit

The changing seasons are celebrated in Kyoto, where the city’s geisha change their hair ornaments 12 times a year to celebrate the changing vista. You can travel to Kyoto at any time of the year for a pleasant holiday, although the best time for spring weather and cherry blossom viewing is in April and May.

Koh Lanta Thailand

Where time seemingly stands still, Koh Lanta is a stunningly beautiful island off the south coast of Thailand. Originally, it was home to an ancient sea gypsy race with their own language and beliefs, now the growing variety of bungalow resorts bring 20th century luxuries, while still preserving the natural beauty of this lesser-known island. Glistening stretches of white sandy beaches, cooling turquoise water, verdant jungle and glowing sunsets, a perfect paradise to enjoy year-round warmth and relax. Unlike some of the most picturesque beachscapes in the world, finding an uncrowded beach is not uncommon. The northern beaches exude fun and excitement, where the southern beaches are mellower, perfect for romance and relaxation. Exotic marine life and colourful coral reefs provide a haven for snorkelers and divers. Rent a motorbike or a Jeep and explore the rivers, caves and waterfall. Visit rubber tree plantations and coconut palm gardens and view fishermen build their nets as they did centuries ago. Dine on exquisite fresh seafood for less than what you would pay for a coffee and muffin at home. The nearest airport to Koh Lanta is in Krabi, which is serviced by a number of inexpensive airlines, and from there many transfer services are available. Alternatively, you can take a speedboat ride from Phuket straight to Koh Lanta.

When to visit

The rainy season stretches from May to December, so ideally the best time to visit is from January to April.

BREW with a view The world’s best beer jaunts

SIP, SAVOUR AND REPEAT.

It has been, and still is, the favourite social drink among mates. In fact, it is the third most popular beverage in the world, beaten only by tea and water. It’s the malted glory of beer, and as the best travel guides will tell you, if you want to get to know the locals, get to know their beer first. From thousand-year old monasteries to the most modern gastronomy facilities in the world, discover the art and pleasure of beer in the finest locations in the world.

WEIHENSTEPHAN BREWERY Freising, Germany Arguably, the best place to start is in a country which is world-famous for its beer. With iconic festivals such as Oktoberfest, Germany knows a thing or two about brewing beer. The Benedictine Abbey Weihenstephan Brewery in Freising, North Munich, is said to be the oldest brewery in the world, established in 725AD. Among its many famous brews, its Oettinger has been one of the most popular beers in Germany. The brewery prefers German or Czech noble hops and, to keep a rich flavour, most of their beers are not pasteurised or filtered. To savour a crisp Weihenstephaner beer on tap, visit the Bräustüberl, the only location in the world to pour the unfiltered Weihenstephan Edel-Pils.

MOA BREWING COMPANY Marlborough, New Zealand In the heart of New Zealand’s world-famous sauvignon blanc region, you may be surprised to learn of a boutique brewery with some of the finest beer in the world. However, the founder proclaims, “It takes a lot of beer to make a good wine.” Moa Brewing Company was founded by Josh Scott, the son of renowned Marlborough winemaker, Allan Scott. Not much interested in wine, the rebel son did enjoy beer, and even got in trouble for running a bootleg beer operation while at boarding school. Using traditional winemaking methods, Moa is crafted from New Zealand premium malts, Nelson Sauvin hops and then barrel aged and bottle fermented, just as beer was made hundreds of years ago. Enjoy pizza and beer in its beer garden and sample the unique Moa St Josephs, with caramel and banana notes which have been heightened by its extended bottle conditioning period. An extremely drinkable tripel beer.

ACHEL BREWERY Belgium Trappist is a word synonymous with sacred beer, brewed by Trappist monks with an eye for quality over quantity. They only brew enough beer each year to provide an income to cover the costs of the monastery. Many of these beers can’t be purchased outside of the region, making a trip taste all the more sweet. Where a modern beer may only take a few days to brew, the Trappist beer can take months, ensuring traditional fermentation and unique flavours. Sint Benedictus Abdij in Achel, Belgium, is close to the border of the Netherlands. It is the newest, and least known, of the Trappist breweries in Belgium, but is the only Trappist brewery that features a café inside the abbey, so visitors can sip on a fine lager while watching the monks pray and go about their daily business. The 5° Bruin and Blond beers can only be tasted here on draft in the cafeteria. This is one experience where abstaining isn’t an option.

CASCADE BREWERY Hobart, Tasmania It’s called the brewery at the edge of the earth. Founded in 1824, Cascade Brewery in Hobart, Tasmania, is the oldest continually operating brewery in Australia. Australia’s smallest state may be miniscule in land mass, but certainly not in beer heritage. The concept for the brewery was drawn in the Old Hobart Goal by convict Peter Degraves. The brewery as it stands now is an impressive and imposing gothic-style building, nestled near the base of Mount Wellington, surrounded by apple trees and hop vines. The brewery is the only brewery, and one of the few around the world, who makes its own malt, using an in-house malting facility. A treat is to savour the Cascade Stout, with toffee and caramel characteristics. The roasted barley provides deep chocolate notes which are balanced with subtle sweet toffee and nutty roasted tones, a beer to enjoy with dessert. Almost as famous as the brewery, is the beautiful Woodstock Garden, a picture-perfect location to enjoy finely crafted beer at one of the southern-most locations on earth.

Boardslides and big air. It’s just another day at the office for GoWake Cable Park manager, Greg Wood. Greg and his fiancé Tara moved to Mackay in 2013 to manage the cable wakeboarding park, a sport which they are both talented at. Greg is a naturally talented water athlete. At age 14 he was an Australian champion for barefoot waterskiing and then moved his passion towards snowboarding and surfing. He moved from Jervis Bay in New South Wales to the Sunshine Coast, and turned his attention to riding cable at the popular Bli Bli cable park.

STOMP WITH

Style

“Life is like wakeboarding. You need to keep moving, otherwise you will eventually go under.”

He was a natural on the board and, in 2010, he travelled to Germany for the world cable wakeboard championships. His career took off when he signed as a pro rider with DoubleUp Wakeboards (DUP). DUP concentrate on the free ride aspect of wakeboarding, so Greg has never been put under pressure to compete. “The last two years I have been on some pretty amazing film trips. We went to Europe last year for three and a half weeks filming for DUP and I recently got back from Thailand. “Getting to see the world, doing what I love, is a dream come true,” Greg said. When he hasn’t been carving the wake, Greg, and his team mate, Scotty Green, have been an integral part of a DUP design team, who have successfully developed a board specifically suited to heavier riders. “The idea was to create an indestructible board, suited for the heavier rider. We had a couple of prototypes at the start and we made a few changes until we were satisfied with the shape and design. “We created the Blanc which has been selling for the last two years and I’m really stoked with how it came out. It’s so good to ride something that I was able to help design,” Greg said. GoWake Cable Park is currently constructing the second half of the park, which is set for completion at the end of 2015. If it weren’t for the cable park, Greg believes he would be chasing the winter to snowboard. “Wakeboarding is like summer snowboarding for me, but I’m equally as passionate about both sports. Greg is thankful that he has turned his passion into a career. “I’ve had amazing support in my life to help me achieve everything I have. DoubleUp Wakeboards, Hardline and Sandbox helmets have

56 www.corelife.com.au

been my biggest supporters, as well as the love and encouragement from my family. “Our members at GoWake are incredible too. To see someone start as a beginner, barely able to stand up as they are being towed across the water, to then develop into a confident rider, jumping off ramps, makes my job and my passion all worthwhile. I don’t count the days, I make the days count. Every day that I wake up and look forward to getting on the board, is another day I know I’m right where I’m meant to be.”

As it is a big trend with the men at the moment. Lee came to our salon wanting something on trend but wanted to keep the beard.

MODEL Lee > STYLIST Blessed Hair And Beauty

AFTER

The Preparation

We gave Lee 2 really good shampoo with Keune Clarifying Shampoo to remove oils, dry scalp and dirt from a hard day’s work. Following the shampoo, we did a relaxing Keune Repair Treatment with a hot towel sprinkled with a few drops of the Keune So Pure Essential Oil and then a 10 minute massage to release the stresses of a hard day’s work.

The Cut

With the back and sides I created a horseshoe parting and, using clippers, I started with a gauge 3 on the sides and back of Lee’s head, bringing it quite high through the back. Then, using a gauge 2 just on the perimeter, I used a technique called scissor over comb which established a graduated shape. Throughout the top section I took about half an inch off, keeping length for styling.

The Style

I applied Keune Root Volumiser to the root area on damp hair. Using the blow dryer nozzle attachment, I dried the hair against gravity to direct the hair into shape. I created subtle volume through the top by lifting the hair and drying at the base. I finished off Lee’s look using Keune Blend Volume Powder which gave the hair height and volume but also gave the hair a matt finish.

The Beard

The focal point of Lee’s look. Using the GHD Slim Styler I styled Lee’s beard and finished it off with Keune’s Blend Shape which will keep it in the desired shape.

Iconic Bride of the month

Nicole Knapman “Choosing a wedding photographer can be quite overwhelming. I appreciate a beautiful photo and dislike anything staged and over edited. I love simplicity and I think it’s important to capture those beautiful moments at a wedding that are ‘true’. Those beautiful ‘in the moment shots.’ Norina from Iconic Bride Photography was our wedding photographer. She is a passionate and enthusiastic photographer with a fantastic eye for style and has great attention to detail. Norina was very professional, laidback and fun. She went above and beyond to make Dean and I feel so comfortable, which is depicted in our photos. Norina made us feel as though our wedding was the most important thing in the world and the photos she took were absolutely beautiful! We are amazed at how she captured every magical moment from our big day. Norina is a truly talented photographer and it was an absolute pleasure to deal with her and the Iconic Bride team for our wedding photography.” How did Dean propose? “He organised a romantic dinner on the beach while we were holidaying on Hayman Island. He was very calm and not nervous at all so I didn’t suspect anything. It was really special.” What was your something old, new, borrowed and blue? “Something old was my grandmother’s engagement ring, I pinned on the inside of my dress. Something new was my wedding dress, something borrowed was my Nan’s handkerchief and my Nan made me a garter with blue on it for my something blue.” Tell us about the dress! “My dress had a fitted French lace bodice and layers of tulle as the skirt. It had see-through panels on the back with a beautiful long veil. It was made by MXM Couture, based in Brisbane. What song did you walk down the aisle to? “Marry Me, by Train.” Any silly moments that you look back on and laugh? “Thankfully I didn’t know about this until after the wedding, but the bus we had organised for our photos for the bridal party broke down just before the ceremony. All the groomsman were dressed in their suits pushing the bus down our street, trying to make it start. Luckily, the bus started again and the boys got to the ceremony on time!” What was something unique about your wedding? “Dad is a bit of a joker and a well-known entertainer at parties. Having four daughters who love to dance, he too is not shy of the dance floor and we thought it would be fun to do a choreographed father/ daughter dance. We started off with a slow song and then broke out to a remix of about three pop songs. It was hilarious. We didn’t tell anyone about it so it was a surprise to everyone at the wedding. They loved it!” Where was your favourite photo location? “The Dispensary. The interior is amazing and there were so many different photograph styles. Because we had a big bridal party it suited us so well. Everyone could have a drink in-between photos so it kept the boys happy.” Any advice for future brides? “The best advice I ever received was to make time to sit with your husband and take it all in. The day goes so quickly and before you know it you’re leaving the reception.”

Bizarre beauty from around the globe

Bizarre beauty trends can be found across the globe, and with many of them making their way into high-end beauty salons, what will be hitting the shelves next? Many of these top secret beauty regiments are famed to be better than Botox. Skin like a Geisha Porcelain skin in revered in Japan, and the lengths that some Japanese women go to may seem bizarre to us. Seabird droppings contain trace amounts of a chemical called guanine, which gives facial creams a pearlescent effect, so it’s not uncommon to find a bird-poo facial on the menu at a Japanese beauty salon. Instead of reaching for the needle, many Japanese women prefer to ingest foods rich in collagen, such as beef tendons, for better skin from within. With 18 amino acids in silk, Japanese women apply natural silk, straight from the silkworm, to their skin as a readily-absorbed moisturiser. Lovely locks Women in India strive for luxurious locks by using coconut oil as a leave-in conditioner, applying it to the ends and massaging it into the scalp. Italians keep their thick black hair supple and shiny by mixing full fat yoghurt with olive oil, as a DIY conditioner. Leave in for five minutes, and then rinse. In Middle Eastern Oman, women mix dried rose petals with boiling water to extract the natural fragrance, then when cool, will use the scented water as a final rinse, giving their hair the delicate smell of roses. Supple skin In Chile, snail farmers discovered the benefits of snail slime in keeping their hands supple. Now, snail excretion can be found in face cream, rumoured to be worn by Katie Holmes. Chilean women also mix red grapes with white flour for a DIY facial, yielding energised skin. Bee venom is another celeb favourite, worn by our own Kylie Minogue as well as Kate Middleton in facial creams.

for the girls

Don’t settle for less than a perfect fit! At Reef Goddess Boutique we specialize in, well, um, how do I say this tactfully, women with a generous bust or perhaps I should just quote what many of my customers say “Oh look, they have big boob swimwear here”. And yes we do! We stock specialty fashion bikinis, tankinis and one pieces in size 8 -18 C, D, DD, E, F and G cup. We have always stocked beautiful bikini’s in sizes 8-14 but a number of years ago we identified the need for fashion bikinis, tankini’s and one pieces in bra cup sizes. Initially all we could find in cup sizes were either very plain, very ugly, poorly cut, very expensive or in some cases plain, ugly and expensive! Our search led us to an English lingerie company that had added swimwear to their popular “Freya” and “Fantasie” labels. My advice to customers looking for cup size swimwear: • Don’t settle for less than a perfect fit • Don’t buy swimwear when you are in a hurry. Allow at least 45-60mins (yes, guys it does take that long to buy a bikini) • Keep an open mind and try on lots of styles and prints. Sometimes it is the one with the least rack appeal that looks fantastic on. • You may want to avoid really brief cut bottoms because they can look out of proportion (like an upside down triangle). Slightly wider sides can have a more flattering effect.

• Avoid the temptation to buy swimwear online – it really needs to be tried on. • If you find an experienced sales assistant and have a good rapport with her, don’t be shy and ask for her help. Remember she sees women in swimwear all day and may know the perfect one for you! Reef Goddess also stocks regular swimwear in sizes 6 – 24, fashion in sizes 8 – 20, accessories, homeware, gifts, has a large selection of the beautiful, comfortable, reasonably priced shoes and has the cutest dog boutique full of sparkly collars, dog jackets and more!

health + fitness

you are what you eat. It’s that time of year again! It’s getting cold and it’s so easy to turn to ‘comfort’ food, especially in the evenings to keep us warm.

Ensure you have tasty and healthy snacks on hand for ‘emergencies’. Remember, though, it’s only YOU thinking you need the comfort food… you need to ask yourself if you are really hungry, or is it just a bad habit you are forming.

Snuggling up in front of the TV in trackpants and ugg boots, with a mug of hot chocolate and a block of chocolate is something that can happen more than it should!

Drink lots of water!! It’s not as easy to drink a lot when the weather isn’t as warm, but fill up on it! Sometimes hunger pains are a signal that you need to drink more, so always have water on hand.

Your usual exercise routine also seems to get bypassed. It’s easy to sleep in a bit longer and skip your normal training in favour of the warm bed, or using an excuse along the lines of “it’s too cold ” or “it’s too dark now”… does this sound like you?

Nobody is perfect! If you have caused some ‘minor’ damage, get over it and get back on track. Make sure you train a bit harder the next day, make the most of the extra energy (calories) you consumed and do not make the same mistake the following evening!

If you’re turning to the comfort foods and missing your exercise sessions, there’s only going to be one result. Your body isn’t used to the extra intake of calories and if you’re not burning any up (let alone the additional) through exercise, you can be sure the kilos will start to creep on!

deep and meaningfuls from a medical guru

Staying safe on your travels So you have just organized a holiday to an exotic location and you are excitedly planning everything. Like travel insurance, vaccinations and travel advice for your trip may be the last thing you think about but could be the one thing to save your life! Like insurance, whether you have travel vaccines depends on the likelihood of getting the infections and how much risk you are prepared to take. If the risk is high and the cost low, the decision is easy. However, for the more expensive vaccines where the risks are lower, accurate and well informed advice from your GP is important. See your GP about your travel plans and they should be able to give you advice about how severe the risks are and how much the vaccines cost! You then make the decision and discuss if you want to take some medications “just in case. However, the GPs are also able to give you advice about several other illnesses that can’t be vaccinated against and the precautions you need to take overall. For example, you need to know how to protect yourself against malaria, Dengue Fever, gastroenteritis, rabies, Japanese Encephalitis and really exciting things in Africa like Schistosomiasis from rivers, Ebola and Yellow fever. Food hygiene and common sense will protect against the gut infections and protection against mosquitoes reduces the risks from many other infections. However, once you have got all your vaccines from your clever GP and taken all the protective measures, have a great holiday and apply that evidence based medical protocol of keeping your fingers crossed!

To Paleo or Not to Paleo Paleo is our buzz word at the moment with it being the answer. if not to all. to many of our eating concerns. It is a way to eat to ensure a healthy lifestyle along with managing weight and energy. But what does Paleo mean really and is it as good as everyone suggests? “The core of paleo is the diet: it eschews grains, sugars and modern vegetable oils in favour of high-quality meat, fish, eggs and vegetables. “ (www.modernpaleo.com/principles.html) Some people might remember Atkins and suggest that Paleo is another version having high protein and no carbohydrate. This way of eating is popular in the fitness and weight loss world where people see at least short term results with high protein diets. Especially as we now have the wealth to sustain eating large amounts of meat every day. (Not looking at the cost of this to Mother Earth or our caged animals to meet this need. That’s another story.

then work to find balance again. For example, pulling calcium from our bones to alkaline. The risk of constipation with high protein diet is high if you are not using our bodies a 80 -20 rule of 80% vegetable and 20% protein To have a Poo it has to be fermented to eliminate. The backbone of a good poo is fermented fibre, if you don’t eat enough, grains, pulses, fruits and vegetables containing fibre you will not have enough bacteria in your bowel to be able to process fibre into a good poo as there is no need for bacteria to be present. If you eat a high protein diet or processed foods you will have bacteria that facilitate putrefaction of proteins. Aka sludge and disease, including worms and tape worms! So how do we keep a balance with paleo or a high protein diet? Ensure you receive good sources of plant based fibre, fermented foods, soaked chia seeds or eco bloom. Amaranth, buckwheat millet and quinoa are all grain like seeds with no gluten that provide many health benefits with quinoa even being a complete protein. I provide cooking workshops on these seeds and fermented food, so you can eat your way to wellnesss.

One of the biggest concerns with the Paleo diet, if not done with balance, is eating high amounts of protein leaves you at risk of colon cancer. In 2014, about 16,980 Australians are expected to be diagnosed with bowel cancer (9,250 in men and 7,730 in women). An estimated 19,960 are expected to be diagnosed in 2020. (Australian Governement Cancer Australia) Once again, in having any food plan, it comes back to balance. Our body works with being in balance. It’s aim in keeping you well is to have you balance in acid and alkaline, contractive or expansive energies and to keep your heart rate balanced, your breathing balanced. Our body is looking for homeostasis. When we keep it too contracted or acid it has to

A goal is a dream No crazy training regimes... No fad diets – Just a healthy lifestyle... and world titles Living a healthy lifestyle is a passion for Sarah Davis, something in which she leads by example. From an early age, Sarah learnt that if you want to achieve in life, you need to work hard, set goals and chase them. According to Sarah, “A goal is a dream with a ‘due by’ date. You can dream but if you don’t set a timeline then it will stay that… a dream.” She goes on to say, “The right balance of lifestyle training combined with your tailored eating plan will help you improve your wellbeing and fitness and reduce stress.” In fact, Sarah Davis is living proof of the power of goal-oriented thinking and a healthy balance of eating and training. Building on her qualifications and experience promoting healthy lifestyle and fitness, Sarah set herself the goal of becoming a professional athlete. She came through with flying colours – from competing in her first amateur event in 2011 to winning a world title in natural body building in just two years. Sarah says, “I am really passionate about helping others achieve their healthy lifestyle goals which is why I established my health and wellness business, Sarah Davis Online Personal Trainer.” Sarah’s focus is on helping as many people as possible improve their health through expert information and individualised training and nutrition programs. The results achieved by Sarah’s clients are testament to her approach. Sarah is bringing her healthy lifestyle message to Mackay, Airlie Beach and Townsville in August this year. Sarah says, “I invited Grant Pieterse, a respected professional body builder, to join me as guest speaker so that the men out there can see how a structured, healthy lifestyle can deliver results in all aspects of life. His story is inspiring.” A whole day is planned in each location – the morning session will cover healthy lifestyle, from goal setting to balancing life, training and nutrition, while the afternoon workshop has a fitness competition and bodybuilding focus. You can also book one-on-one time with either of these professional athletes – what an opportunity! Sarah’s Airlie Beach workshop will be held at Airlie Fitness, Cannonvale. Acupuncture!

What is all the fuss about? What actually does work? What is hype and how can we tell the difference? Should we trust the things that have been around for a long time or throw it on the heap of antiquity and trust the might of science? What about a bit of both? Traditional Chinese Medicine has been around for 2500 years, and acupuncture is used by so many different modalities of modern medicine you may have to wonder what all the fuss is about. Physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, GP’s, midwives and masseurs have all jumped on the bandwagon of acupuncture. Why? Because it’s popular? No! Because, even with minimal training they can get acupuncture needles to do a job that their traditional training does not allow for. Simple. Fully qualified practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture became a registered profession last year. There is a ‘risk’ posed to the public from acupuncture and it needs to be regulated. It is only the professionals with university degrees in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine that have been adopted by national regulation, not the modern modalities who do a weekend course to start doing ‘dry-needling’. In ancient China, to be a doctor of TCM was one the highest esteemed jobs you could have and still is. So what can ‘acupuncture specialists’ do that my ‘dry-needling doctors’ can’t? Acupuncturists stand on the shoulders

the

of our ancient masters and use tried, tested and true methods that have withstood the test of time for millennia and have never been outdated. This ancient knowledge is used to treat everything from colds and flu, muscular aches and pain, to complex patterns of internal medicine like digestive, pulmonary and circulation diseases. In fact, when you have a look at the vast history of TCM you will find that almost all aspects of health care can be influenced by acupuncture and Chinese medicine in some way. If your acupuncturist has talent, you should be able to walk out of their clinic feeling much better after the first visit. What about the naysayers? “There’s no scientific evidence that any of it does anything beyond placebo!” you hear the Friends of Science in Medicine cry. A past president of the Australian Medical Association Prof. Kerryn Phelps replied, “The past decade there has been a lot of research… to claim there is no ‘valid evidence’ is wrong. You won’t find it if you are not looking for it.” For the TCM practitioners, we don’t mind, people vote with their feet, and everyone has heard a great story of how amazing it can be. Scott Martin has been a practicing doctor of Chinese medicine in Mackay since 2007. He completed his Masters degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2011 and is nationally registered to practice Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS?

Many separated parents are unaware of their rights and obligations when it comes to overseas travel with their children. Can they travel overseas? How do they get a passport? What happens if the parties can’t agree? An Australian children’s passport application requires the written consent of each person who has parental responsibility for that child. This is usually the child’s parents but may include grandparents or other relatives. In circumstances where written consent will not be provided by all parties with parental responsibility, a written request can be made to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to consider issuing the passport due to “special circumstances”. If your request to consider “special circumstances” is not successful, you can apply to the Court for an order permitting a child to travel internationally, including for the issuing of a passport for that child. In considering such applications, the court will only permit a child to travel internationally if it determines that it is in the best interest of the child. Restrictions may be placed on you such as • Payment of security or a bond • Providing an itinerary to the other parent • Not travelling to any country which has a travel advice on the Government’s Smart Traveller website, suggesting travel would be unsafe. If you have divorced or separated from your former partner and wish for your children to travel internationally, it is best to first obtain legal advice in relation to your obligations and options. Call 4963 0880 for more information.

STRANGER DANGER

It is a hell no parent should ever have to go through.

We should never have known the names Daniel Morcombe, Bruce Morcombe or Denise Morcombe, but because of the tragic events in 2003, their names will be forever etched in our minds. Daniel should be traveling the world, proposing to his girlfriend or raising a family. But Daniel never made it past the age of 13. His parents, Bruce and Denise, waited eight agonizing years to find out what happened to him, and then endured a further three years waiting for Daniel’s killer to be sentenced to life imprisonment.

Play observation games with your children to get them into the habit of taking notice of their surroundings. Children are easily distracted by their imagination and can suffer from ‘tunnel vision’. Ask them questions, such as “what was the colour of the car we just passed,” or “what colour hat was that man wearing.”

It’s a hell no parent should ever have to go through.

Talk to children about recognizing when a situation is not ok. Let them know that some behavior is not ok, and that if they feel scared, then they have a right to feel scared, and they should get help from an adult they trust as soon as they can. If they feel scared, teach them to run to a safe location as fast as they can.

Bruce and Denise established the Morcombe Foundation, in memory of their son, as an initiative to keep other children safe. Through their own grief, they have harnessed the strength to turn their anguish into something positive. The Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum has been introduced into Queensland schools, and aims to teach children about personal safety and awareness, by focusing on three key safety messages: Recognise, React and Report. You can help your children understand what action to take in a difficult situation, by talking to them about stranger danger, and reinforcing key safety messages. Always travel with a friend and avoid walking in public alone. Safety in numbers, even if you have had an argument with your mates. Have a family password that your children recognise instantly. It could be the family cat’s name, ‘Mittens’, or your favourite toy ‘Transformers’. Make sure anyone picking your children up know the secret password and get your children into the habit of asking for it.

Don’t share information with strangers, including over the telephone or online. Teach children that if someone they don’t know starts asking questions, they need to ignore them and advise an adult they trust immediately. Ask children to ring you as soon as a plan changes, such as they get a flat tyre on their bike, they missed the school bus or if they are going to be late home. Where possible have someone you trust pick them up rather than let them make their own way home. For in-depth, age-specific advice, visit the following website link to access parent guides to reinforce key safety messages at home. www.education.qld.gov.au/parents/school-life/child-safety-curriculum.html “Our son Daniel did not get a second chance. His legacy is that you can learn from this tragic event and make sure it does not happen again. Daniel has given you that second chance.”

safety in the sun While an overcast day in winter can feel chilly, the sun’s ultraviolet rays can be just as damaging as on a hot summer’s day. As adults, we are in the routine of applying sun protection daily, but our children may not have fully developed the habit yet. It’s up to us to ensure that children are protected from the sun, especially babies and infants. The golden rule is to apply sun protection every time you or your children are going outside during daylight hours. Even if it feels cold, ultraviolet rays can be as powerful as on a scorching hot day in summer. It’s the damage you can’t see that can be the most detrimental to your child’s health. In Queensland, this message is critical because our sunshine state has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world*. Most cases of skin cancer are preventable if sun protection methods are used from an early age. When used routinely and consistently, children will pick up the sun-safe habits and will be more likely to be sun-safe in the future. Children’s skin is more susceptible to damage from ultraviolet radiation and, as the majority of skin damage occurs in the first 20 years of life, forgetfulness during these early years can significantly increase your child’s risk of developing skin cancer.

Dr Rishi 121 dental

how important are your kids teeth? ‘A lack of awareness is one of the biggest problems when it comes to children and tooth decay. There is a trend and misconception that baby teeth are not as important as adult teeth, with studies showing that a shocking 48.7% of Australian children aged between 5-6 have a history of dental decay. Baby teeth maintain space in the mouth for our adult teeth to erupt through. If lost prematurely, teeth begin to move and when the time comes for the adult teeth to erupt, there often is not enough space. This results in the need for expensive corrective dentistry such as bracers/orthodontics. Removing teeth also causes unnecessary trauma for children and makes them fearful of the dentist.

Vitamin D, that we receive from the sun, is crucial to good health. We need some sunshine daily for our bodies to produce Vitamin D, which helps our bodies to absorb calcium for strong teeth and bones. We can still benefit from the sun while wearing sunscreen. Teach your kids to “Block the sun, not the fun” by promoting sun protection to them, while encouraging a healthy outdoors lifestyle.

An easy way to remind your children of the ‘high five’ sun-safe policies is to: • Sit, Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap. • Sit in shade when having a rest. • Slip on a t-shirt or rashie. • Slop on some sunscreen every two hours. • Slap on a hat. • Wrap on some sunglasses. Together, we can create a brighter future for our children, by being brighter in the sun. *Statistic according to The State of Queensland, Queensland Government 2014 www.sunsafety.qld.gov.au

As dentists, we try to emphasise the importance of good brushing techniques and dietary habits. Regular check-ups are important not only to promote good habits, but we can also carry out preventative procedures to avoid the need for more invasive dental work later on. Parents also play a crucial role in the fight against early childhood decay. We recommend that parents should help with brushing their child’s teeth up to the age of 6, and try to minimise the frequency of intake of sugary foods and drinks throughout the day. ‘ Book your child’s next appointment with 121 Dental, Cannonvale 07 4946 5070 www.corelife.com.au 79

Are you looking for someone who looks at the body from a structural, chemical and emotional perspective?

‘choice of schools’ or ‘school or choice’?

My name is Olivia Thomas and I am the principal Chiropractor and Owner of Little Sprouts Chiropractic, located in Mackay city.

As parents, we have many important decisions to make that will influence the way our children take on the world.

I am primarily focused on pregnancy and children’s health and wellbeing. I am a holistic chiropractor who focuses on assessing the body from a structural, chemical and emotional perspective or what I like to call the triad of health. Our bodies are under the control of our nervous system. If that nervous system is stressed in any way, such as by poor diet, lack of movement or emotional stress then the communication highway, as I like to call it, or nervous system cannot work to its full potential. Pregnancy and the birth process is probably the most stressful experience a woman will go through. My goal is to allow the body’s potential to be optimal by assessing the body through a structural, chemical and emotional model that assists a women through pregnancy and allows a pregnant women’s body to be at it’s optimal at the birth process. My primary area during the pregnancy process is uterine constraint. The extra stress put on a women’s pelvis, lumbar spine and the ligaments that help her carry her child can cause inappropriate stress to the uterus. If this uterine constraint is present it can make the journey through the birth canal increasingly difficult. Preparing the women’s nervous system is vitally important as there are many increased stresses on the body during the trimester process. Appropriate supplementation is also very important and I offer guidance on what is important supplementation wise to make sure you and your baby are getting optimal nutrition during the process. Assessing babies as early as possible is also vitally important. The birth process, whether it was through the birth canal or not, is the most stressful process our bodies go through. Here at Little Sprouts Chiropractic we use a combination of safe, cranial adjusting (baby head massage), exercises to help the baby develop appropriately and lots of homecare advice. The two primary activities of infants are suckling and sleeping. There is evidence that disruption in suckling also disrupts sleep, as suckling lowers the heart rate, decreases the metabolic rate and increases feelings of calmness. It is comforting to know that by a simple health care check at Little Sprouts Chiropractic your baby’s sleep and suckling can be assisted. All babies should be assessed as soon as possible to ensure that they are functioning to their full potential. Looking forward to meeting you very soon. Yours in Chiropractic, Dr Olivia Thomas Bhsc, MChiro Cert Ak, Musc Acp, Retained Neonatal and Neuro-emotional Technique Practitioner

Of those decisions, education is central to a child’s development, friendship choices and happiness. Parents have a variety of great schools to choose from when they consider the education of their sons and daughters. The schools across our district offer an array of differing and similar educational pathways and philosophies. Australian statistics show that parents consider 2.9 Primary Schools and 2.2 Secondary Schools when selecting an educational facility. Nearly 50% of parents will have no previous or current connection with the school and pay enrolment and pre-enrolment fees at over 2 schools to keep their options open. So what does this mean? Today’s parents are doing their homework when choosing schools for their children, much more than the generations before them. It is interesting also to point out that ‘cost’ does not make it into the top nine factors for choosing a school. Quality of teaching, focus on student welfare and balance in education and life are the top three points of interest for parents when preparing their shortlist of schools for their children. Academic standards, facilities and resources, the school’s values, reputation and tradition, class sizes and location then complete the list. My advice in my role to all prospective parents is to do your homework on all considered options and make an effort to visit your educational choices in person and even more importantly, while they are in operation. From the first visit or tour, it can be quite obvious to a family whether or not it is the ‘School of choice.’
