WIN ULTIMATE HEALTH PACKAGE WITH ROWENA KISSUN

Welcome to 2016! I don’t know if it is just me, but as each year passes they seem to be going faster and faster and I can’t believe my little boy is turning 10 this year! Remember when you were a kid and your parents would say to you, “don’t try and grow up to fast! Enjoy your childhood while you can, you will only be young once!” We would roll our eyes, and dream of the freedom we thought being a grown up would bring. How wrong we were, being a grown up can SUCK! Its seems the youth of today are growing up way to fast, and as parents we need to remember how much being a grown up can suck, and how important it is for them to live out their childhood for as long as possible. In saying this though, I also believe that some good old fashion discipline and guidance is needed. I had someone approach me at a wedding and comment on how good it was to see a parent discipline their child and teach them respect, it got me wondering why this isn’t the “norm” any longer. In a world full of challenges and adversity, let us teach our children to be resilient! Enable them to cope with the big and sometimes tough world we live in, by allowing them to experience loss, anger, pain and frustration while you are able to guide them through it. Prepare them for reality and then sit back and watch them soar.

International Flights for

Mackay? from Mackay Airport! It’s exciting times here as we work towards achieving international flights for Mackay Airport. This is all part of fulfilling our 20 year Mackay Airport development vision that builds on our existing infrastructure and offers new aviation and business opportunities for our region. Our runway is already capable of handling some international services and we are actively engaged in securing suitable flights. We look forward to sharing news on these in the very near future. Mackay Airport has private funds ready to invest right now to progress our almost $1B vision for the airport’s land holdings which commenced in June this year with the construction of the ibis Mackay Airport hotel.

We stock quality tyres from:

Our plans will responsibly grow our existing capacity for international passenger services as well as freight facilities which incorporate road and air freight logistics. Both areas of focus offer excellent opportunities to further consolidate Mackay Airport as Central Queensland’s key transport hub. Mackay Airport recently received endorsement of our responsible approach to growth and development by being successfully assessed as meeting the Bronze Benchmarking Requirements of the EarthCheck Company standard. The prestigious EarthCheck certification is recogntion of Mackay Airport’s efforts to deliver continuous environmental improvements and to secure a sustainable future for the facility and the business. We’ve undertaken several initiatives to achieve positive outcomes for our environment including a recent $1.3M upgrade to energy saving LED lighting across our entire apron. We are proud to be the first Australian airport to have implemented a complete apron upgrade to LEDs. Happy and safe travels

COST-SAVING

INNOVATION Joyce Mechanical Services (JMS) provides leading support solutions to maximise the longevity of equipment, reduce operating expenditure and increase sale of equipment margins. Across a broad range of industry, JMS has experience in both the service, transportation and demobilisation of equipment in mining, agriculture, marine, on and offshore drilling rigs and quarrying.

maintenance is key to preventing costly breakdowns. JMS specialise in machine mid-life overhauls to compliment a regular maintenance regime. With an upgrade to hydraulic and electrical components as well as replacement of major parts, machinery and equipment are more likely to exceed the expected number of “life hours predicted.

With an innovative approach to providing cost-saving solutions, JMS have pioneered a containerized skid transportation option, to transport heavy machinery long-distance with zero damage to the internal components. Modified shipping containers with reinforcement and steel floors for increased strength are used in conjunction with a purpose-built steel frame which allows machine components to be bolted securely in place. This provides a weather-proof and secure option for the transportation of plant and machinery.

Specialising in the mining sector, the team at JMS have a broad depth of knowledge, from a range of international equipment companies and industry. Ready any time, day or night, JMS have a fleet of site-ready mine spec vehicles for a prompt response to emergency repairs. As well as field service maintenance, repairs and breakdown attendance, JMS offer a broad range of services to cover a large range of requirements, including LV electrical repairs and auto air conditioning, general fabrication and welding repairs, excavator shutdown, breakdown, technical support and scrapping of machinery. Because of its broad depth of experience, JMS also provides staffing, management, planning and consultation options for all businesses across a range of mechanical services. JMS can provide cover for key employees who take annual leave, to cover labour shortfalls and also on longer-term rostered positions.

This innovation compliments the equipment dismantling and mobilisation service already offered both nationally and internationally. In a recent project, JMS dismantled a 16M grader, containerised it using the purpose-built skid and shipped it internationally in one container when previously it would have required two. The parts were bolted securely within the container resulting in a damage-free and cost-effective delivery. TALK ON THE STREET

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR 2016 AND WHY?

My bucket-list is endless…

Finance, work/life balance and health are always the priorities.

I always come back to trying to be the best me

On a professional level: I have been working with passion in the event industry in France for 8 years but it is the first time I am working for a venue before its official opening, which is an exciting challenge. “I always set the same goal every year….. To be the best me I can be, to learn from my mistakes and to be forgiving, generous and open-minded. Sometimes it is hard, sometimes I forget and sometimes I have a meltdown! But I always come back to trying to be the best me – faults and all!”

Next year, I want to focus on the success of the venue (Lure on Abell), liaise with local stakeholders and potential buyers. When you work in the event industry, each day at work is different. There is no routine, that is perfect for me. I am multi-task person which is great for a multi-purpose venue ! On a personal level: I have been living in Australia for 7 months and really enjoy the lifestyle, especially in the Whitsundays area. However, as ‘a traveladdict’ I wish I will be able to discover other states in the next few months. My bucket-list is endless… Stay, Play, Explore is a good motto.

Whitpro expanding into landscape supplies and drinking water deliveries in 2015, means 2016 goals are to beautify the Whitsundays by “greening” the landscape- except when its Whitpro Blue mulch! Work/life balance in 2016 is about allocating time for my wife and checking in with the kids more and enjoying some chill time. Health, less eating on the run therefore better food choices. A planned mountain hike in Japan should see the fitness levels improve too…start training now! If only my wife liked running beside the water truck whilst I received payments, then I would be killing 3 birds with one stone!!

Logan’s Adventure Playground Goes Gold!” Word is really starting to get out about Logan’s Adventure Playground (LAP). No longer is the completion of this amazing community project a distant hope, but a firm reality. As the president of Play and Shine Project Group (and Logan’s mum) Lisa leads a small and motivated committee of dedicated members, and together they are focused on steering LAP to the finish line. Top 3 Tips for Separating Couples

FREE

Information Nights

To assist you with navigating the minefield of separation,

we have asked our Family Law Accredited Specialist, Cathy Cover, her top three tips for separating couples: Tip 1 Important time limits apply in relation to finalising your property settlement matter. The Family Law Act prevents a Court Application for property settlement if one year has elapsed after a divorce order is made, or for de facto couples if two years have passed since separation. In both circumstances, there may be special reasons why property settlements can occur outside this time limit. Further, in determining your property settlement, the asset pool available for distribution is calculated as at the date of the agreement or Order. Accordingly, the sooner after separation you finalise your property matters, the values used are most indicative of what the parties owned at separation.

Tip 2

During the seminars we will talk about common Family Law problems and how you can avoid them. We will also talk about how your entitlements are worked out.

Airlie Beach

A property settlement is not final until it is formalised in the correct way - that is by way of a Court Order (including by consent) or by financial agreement in accordance with the requirements of the Family Law Act. The first benefit of formalising the agreement is that you have certainty moving forward in life, that there will not be an attempt to have a “second bite of the cherry. In addition to finality to the settlement, the second benefit is that some government taxes can be avoided. If the jointly owned family home is transferred to your spouse pursuant to a Court Order or financial agreement, then there is nil stamp duty on the transfer. Sometimes this saving alone more than covers the cost of your legal fees.

Tip 3 It is imperative to get your Estate Planning affairs in order and update your superannuation and life insurance beneficiaries, update your Power of Attorney and your Will. In the unlikely event of your passing prior to updating those documents, grave and unintended consequences can flow. A matter reported in the media this year involved a 30 year old man who was married, but separated from his wife. He passed away, without a Will, and the Intestacy Rules that applied to the distribution of his estate meant that his wife received the entirety of his estate, notwithstanding that they were separated and had finalised their property settlement, and further notwithstanding that he had been in a relationship with his new partner for just less than two years. That outcome would have been avoided if he had an up-to-date will and/or signed a Divorce Application.

McKays Family Law assists with a broad range of family law matters including property settlements and parenting matters. Please contact our office on 4963 0880 to make an enquiry. We guarantee your Initial Consultation within one business day of calling.

Beachside Eyecare

Brings latest dry eye technology to our region!

Do you suffer from dry eyes? Perhaps you don’t see life as clearly as you used to? If your eyes aren’t performing as well as they should, it’s time to seek expert clinical advice at Beachside Eyecare. An eye examination is just as important to your health and quality of life as a visit to your GP. At the forefront of industry advancement, Beachside Eyecare have invested in the most recent dry eye treatment modality called E-Eye. E-Eye uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), to treat meibomian gland dysfunction, which causes the tear film to evaporate more rapidly than normal, leading to dry eyes. Symptoms include burning, stinging and gritty eyes, and are often worse in the morning. Reflex watering or tearing is also possible. Evaporative dry eye is the most common form of dry eye, being responsible for up to 80% of all dry eye conditions and affecting up to 70% of people in some populations. Optometrist, Monpree Lim, explains how Beachside Eyecare’s significant investment in E-Eye will provide dry eye sufferers with a more effective treatment solution. “The use of IPL for meibomian gland dysfunction has been investigated through a recent pilot study by researchers at the University of Auckland and has shown that over 80% of subjects experienced improvement in their dry eye. The study was conducted with patients receiving three treatment sessions over 45 days. “Our aim in investing in IPL technology is to provide a convenient alternative form of treatment for dry eye particularly for patients who have tried various other forms of therapy such as eye drops, hot compresses, eyelid massage, and dry eye supplements without success. “We are excited to be the only optometrist in the area to be able to offer this treatment to our patients,” he said.

Monpree and Narelle Lim became owners of Beachside Eyecare in July 2014 after purchasing the existing Beachside Optics. Amy Camm recently joined the team as an optical assistant, bringing along a refreshingly friendly face and great local knowledge. She has proven herself to be a quick learner and is already an indispensable part of the practice. With an updated spectacle frame range and refurbishment, Monpree and Narelle have been able to introduce their unique touches to create a welcoming environment with plenty of optical options. As an independent optometry practice, Beachside Eyecare also have access to a broad range of high quality spectacle frames and lenses, including the latest technology in progressive lenses. In addition to spectacle and contact lens prescribing, they also provide therapeutic optometry; the treatment of certain acute eye diseases such as red eyes due to allergy and infections, corneal foreign body removals and contact lens complications. In cases where more specialised care is needed, a referral to an eye specialist is made. While providing expert knowledge and new technology is at the forefront of Beachside Eyecare’s practice, the ladies understand that any decisions involving eyesight can be a nervous one for patients, which is why they are never in short supply of friendly smiles and helpful advice. “Eyesight is a gift, one which we strive to protect and enhance with all of our patients. It has been an absolute pleasure to be of service to the local community and building a good rapport with the local doctors,” Narelle said. To find out if E-Eye IPL is suitable for you, visit Beachside Eyecare, above Domino’s Pizza on Shute Harbour Road.

SELF MANAGED SUPERANNUATION FUNDS & PROPERTY I AM INCREASINGLY FINDING OUT THAT SOME OF MY CLIENTS HAVE OPENED SELF-MANAGED SUPERANNUATION FUNDS (SMSF), WITHOUT CONSULTING ME FIRST. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN SO FREQUENTLY? There are a growing number of property developers teaming up with superannuation fund experts to promote investing in direct property through super. Clients attend some kind of promotional event and are advised to set up self-managed superannuation funds so they can invest in the property the developer is trying to promote. Clearly these clients are not encouraged to talk to their existing accountant or financial advisor about the scheme and this is a worrying trend as the superannuation specialists do all the taxation and auditing work for the fund thereby bypassing the accountant who remains completely oblivious unless the client mentions it. I recently took on a new client who had a large tax bill to pay and, in our discussions on how he was going to raise the funds to pay for it, he mentioned that he had some super down south. He had passed retirement age and could access it. I asked him to bring the paperwork in so I could look at it and was horrified when I realised that at age 64, one year away from retirement, he had been advised to set up a SMSF with only $65,000 in super

and invest it in a high risk property development. We called the property developer and they claimed he had set up the SMSF himself and made the investment himself. We pointed out the inappropriateness of the investment given his age and super balance and they back pedalled and agreed to release the funds. The superannuation specialists, when contacted, told us they had nothing to do with his investments, they were only the accountants, and yet the paperwork clearly has both logos and business names (property developer and super specialists) on it? We are still working through the issues and will request a refund of the fees he has paid to the superannuation specialists as it was totally inappropriate to set him up in an SMSF with such a small balance. While in this instance, clearly, there were significant breaches of the SIS Act and the rules and regulations that govern the provision of providing advice regarding superannuation, that does not mean that all promotions for investments in direct property via super are suspect. However, it does pay to consult with your accountant or financial advisor before committing to such a strategy.

At Synergy, we are able to plan for any self-managed superannuation fund, from start up to providing pensions. Thinking of buying or selling a business? We are able to advise on: • Business Appraisals • Business Valuations We are also Small Business Capital Gains Tax specialists. As mentioned, your website is the place where you have your customer’s undivided attention, unlike any other marketing medium. With that in mind, make sure you a) have one and b) keep it up to date. With almost 85% of the Australian population having a smartphone as of mid 2015, and 60% owning a tablet, there has never been a more critical time to establish your online presence.

Whilst your website is your more formal platform to connect with your clients, you can also easily integrate any social media feeds to offer your clients an opportunity to connect with you more informally. Make it easy for your clients to get to know you and what you do. Don’t ignore online, by doing so you are ignoring potential sales.

So much of the way your customer views your business is established at this point, by the way you’re website looks, feels, to how easy it is to use and whether they can easily find the information they are looking for. Which maybe your phone number or store hours, so they can take the next step.

LOOKING AT AN INVESTMENT PROPERTY IN BRISBANE? “My Dad was a client of Steve’s for over 20 years and recently retired owning six houses and debt free. I am now also a very happy client of Steve’s and wish I had listened to Dad 10 years ago when he suggested I talk to Steve.” Mark (Fitter)

TURN $5,000 INTO $250,000

IN SEVEN YEARS I HAVE RECENTLY HAD A CLIENT WITH A SMALL BUSINESS WHO WAS 53 YEARS OF AGE, OWNED HIS HOME, HAD NO DEBTS, EARNS $100K PER ANNUM AND WANTED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ANTICIPATED INCREASE IN BRISBANE HOUSE PRICES.

E T A E CR ALTH X E A W ET V A S

He wanted his contribution to be minimal as his cash was better used as stock in his business. Whilst it depends on a client’s age and their aims, I usually suggest that my clients build a residential investment portfolio using principal and interest rather than interest only, but there are exceptions. With my small business client, he had built one of my 5 bedroom executive homes at North Harbour Brisbane for $489,000. His only outlay was $5,000 for a deposit on the land. Using equity in his home, we borrowed $500,000 to cover stamp duty, Legal’s etc, plus sufficient to cover interest whilst the house was being built. The term was interest only in arrears at 4.88% fixed for 5 years. The rent of $500 per week and tax refund of $6,500 per annum was sufficient to cover ALL outgoings. i.e. apart from an initial outlay of $5,000, this client need outlay a net nothing for the next 7 years. I do not have an accurate crystal ball, but a capital gain of $250,000 in the next 7 years is feasible when you consider that the average price of a house in Brisbane in 1972 was $15,000 and is today about $500,000. - STEVE TAYLOR DISCLAIMER: Steve Taylor & Partners Editorial is opinion and not advice. Did you know your rental property can be a tax deduction? Generally a rental property runs at a loss. When you factor this into your end of year tax return you can reduce your taxable income received through wages by applying the loss against your wages income. This will in turn generate a larger refund, which can be used to fund the ongoing cost of your rental property. This is especially effective for high income earners and referred to as “negative gearing. To maximize the tax benefit of your rental property we suggest you obtain a Quantity Surveyors report. The Quantity Surveyor will calculate the value of the building, fixtures and fittings in your rental property to allow a claim for deprecation. It is the little things that add up and make a real difference to your finances and we are here to give you the right advice that saves you real money and makes a real difference in your life.

Happy New Year to ALL. Can you believe it’s the start of a

DEE MANGION

brand new year? I love this time of the year as it allows us to reflect on the past year and ignites new exciting energy to create new goals and dreams. If one of your goals is to buy a property, Mackay’s current house prices can make your dream a reality. Now is the perfect time to look at buying your first home. There is a great selection in most suburbs under the $300,000 price range, including super hot bargains if you’re prepared to do some renovating. You may find your home loan repayment on your new purchase will compare competitively with the amount of rent you are currently paying your landlord. Current house prices are also favourable for home owners who wish to upgrade their home. If you have owned your home for a number of years and now feel it’s not meeting your needs, perhaps been considering renovating, I suggest don’t rush into it until you have looked at properties for sale. I recommend you spend a few weekends visiting open homes, have a good look at properties on the market. You may find it more viable to sell your own home and upgrade to another. Before attending the open homes, calcu-

late the cost of the renovations and add this to the current value of your own home. If you are unsure of the value of your home, I invite you to call to organise a complimentary appraisal and property report of your home. If you are time poor, give me a call or send me an email with the property requirements you desire and I can help you get started by locating suitable properties to inspect. I am super excited to announce I am starting 2016 with the fantastic Gardian Real Estate Team.

WHY AM I EXCITED? At Gardian we are more than just a real estate office. Best of 2015

2015 was quite a year.

The last 12 months of our lives yielded a tapestry of tears and triumphs, which have set the tone for 2016. While natural disasters, such as the Nepal earthquake, and acts of terrorism, most recently Paris, leave us in shock and disbelief, heartwarming stories of humanity and kindness emerge from tragedy. Like a flower growing through rubble, these acts of selflessness and bravery remind us that fundamentally people are good, gracious and gallant. Across our region, 2015 was a year showing promise. Mackay’s CBD rejuvenation unveiled a much-needed refresh of the town, paving the way for the sugar city to re-brand as a cosmopolitan cuisine destination. The Whitsundays attracted its fair share of celebrity attention, with mega stars Johnny Depp and Taylor Swift gracing the islands. Businesses and volunteers are embracing the natural beauty of our coastline, working to preserve our natural environment for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. History books were re-written with momentous sporting achievements, with champions emerging both at local and national levels. Community spirits are high with the announcement that both Mackay and Proserpine airports are looking into the possibility of international flights this year, bringing the world one step closer to us.

The Whitsunday’s – a celeb favourite. The Whitsunday community was whipped into a frenzy at the end of 2015 with rumours that Taylor Swift would be staying on Hamilton Island to take a minibreak during her ‘1989’ world tour. Tay-tay, as she is affectionately known, did grace the island, staying at its premier luxury resort, qualia, but she wasn’t the only celeb to slip into the Whitsundays for some rest and relaxation.

Taylor Swift The 25-year-old star treated her crew of dancers to a private picnic on the sparkling sand of Whitehaven Beach, complete with beach croquet and boules. She stayed at qualia on Hamilton Island where she was spotted relaxing with her brother Austin, and snapping selfies with cheeky cockatoos. Hamilton Island prides itself on providing celebrities with seclusion and security, imposing a total media ban on the island during the duration of Ms. Swift’s stay.

At Core Magazine, we love our region, from the coast to the coal fields, and we are constantly astounded at the local talent we have residing in Mackay, Isaac and the Whitsundays. Here are a few of the best moments of 2015, in business, performance and passion.

May 2016 bring love and laughter to us all.

Johnny Depp White sand beaches and sparkling turquoise water, naturally the Whitsundays was the perfect location for the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, Dead Men Tell No Tales, to be filmed. Heartthrob actor, Johnny Depp, had been spotted holidaying in the Whitsundays in May, sparking rumours of the impending filming. Hamilton Island resorts confirmed hosting cast and crew as well as helping with the logistics of moving props and supplies to the island where filming was taking place. During filming, barges could be seen shipping supplies back and forth, while helicopters with cameras were seen circumnavigating islands. Motorcycle legend and friend of Depp, Mick Doohan, was also seen getting out of a helicopter at Port of Airlie.

Jessica Watson Young Australian of the Year, Jessica Watson, visited the Whitsundays as a guest speaker at the Whitsunday Writers Festival. Jessica made history when she sailed into Sydney Harbour in her yacht, Ella’s Pink Lady. It was May 15, 2010, two days before her 17th birthday, and she had just become the youngest person to sail solo and unaccompanied around the world. Two years later she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for services to sailing and being a role model for the youth of Australia. Jessica charmed locals with stories of her sailing accomplishments as well as tales of her travels as a Youth Ambassador for the United Nations’ World Food Programme. She showcased her own book, True Spirit and then attended a dinner with the theme of motivation.

Matt Golinski Best known for his regular appearances on the television show Ready Steady Cook, Matt Golinski is an Australian celebrity chef. On Boxing Day, 2011, Matt tragically lost his wife and three daughters when his Tewantin home was engulfed by fire in the early morning. Receiving severe burns, Golinski spent months in hospital before returning to the public eye a year later. Matt produced an exclusive dinner at Tides Restaurant at Peppers Airlie Beach as part of the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday Food and AgriTourism Project.

The Isaac Region is one of contrast, from its pristine natural beaches south of Sarina to the rustic rural history and agriculture in its west. Rich in mineral wealth, the coal mines stretching from Nebo to Clermont are what the Isaac is famous for. However, at the heart of industry are communities who rely on the Isaac Regional Council for safety and support. What makes the Isaac Region a great place to live? “There is a genuine warmth and hospitality throughout the region. We aim to keep our region a great place for people to come, make plans and raise a family. We are proud of that and, above all, that’s why people choose to live and stay here.” What was the Isaac Regional Council (IRC)’s greatest achievement for 2015? “We have worked hard to advocate at a State and Federal Level to ensure Isaac Regional Council’s priorities for our communities gain attention and supportive action.” What were community highlights delivered by the IRC in 2015?

• Budgeting and managing your money better • A health check on your home loan and some tips to pay it off quicker • A review of your life insurance and income protection to ensure families are protected • A health check to ensure there is no nasty surprises when you get your retirement

“On a project front, our development and continual community consultation on Council’s corporate plan has been very insightful. Seeing the Dysart Medical Centre through to its official opening has really given back to the region. A major highlight was picking up momentum on an important issue present in our communities, and across our state, and doing something about it. Last year, Council raised important awareness and financial support for domestic violence at the Mayor’s charity ball event and hosting a walk against domestic violence. We will continue this plight alongside our constituents.” What is planned for the Isaac Region in 2016? “I hope to continue our progress with the strategic advocating and representation on behalf of the Isaac Communities. I’m also very excited that we are bringing the Queensland Music Festival back to the region, with a broader and more engaging program.”

Your Mayor

Mayor Comerford’s New Year’s Resolution “To be re-elected Mayor of Mackay Regional Council.”

Mayor Deirdre Comerford Mackay Regional Council

The Mackay Regional Council has much to be proud about in 2015, particularly its popular community campaign #MackayPride, which took out a prestigious media award early this year in Cairns. Mayor Deirdre Comerford shares the highlights of 2015 from the Mackay Regional Council. “I am a proud local who believes this region has enormous opportunities. Our #MackayPride campaign is essentially what this region is about. We are facing some challenges, but there are lots of opportunities. We are listening to the community and have achieved some great outcomes in the past 12 months and there is a lot more work to do.”

Mayor Whitney’s New Year’s Resolution “To enjoy more time with my grandchildren and exercise more, something I believe can be achieved hand-in-hand.”

Mayor Jennifer Whitney Whitsunday Regional Council

From nearing insolvency in 2013 to now being one of the most financially stable council’s in Queensland, the Whitsunday Regional Council (WRC) is thrilled with the achievements of 2015. Mayor Jennifer Whitney credits her councilors, Whitsunday Regional Council staff and the community for a successful year. What has been the WRC’s greatest achievement in 2015? “Growing the financial stability of council from rock bottom to now being showcased as one of the best financial performers across the state is a remarkable achievement. “We are now in a position to plan major capital works projects for the Whitsunday region.”

What is an achievement from the Mackay Regional Council we can all be proud of?

How was 2015 successful in building the foundations for a prosperous Whitsundays of the future?

“The completion of the $18.6 million City Centre Revitalisation Project on time and on budget and the community being proud of what has been achieved. It is the start of redefining our City Centre. It’s also great to see the installation of ‘Canefire’ Australia’s first smartphone interactive public artwork.”

“By appointing our CEO, Scott Waters, to the new role of General Manager Commercial, we have strengthened our focus on growing the Whitsunday Coast Airport and creating economic drive for future prosperity.

What were some of the Mackay Regional Council’s highlights from 2015? “Adopting a budget with a zero percent movement in what we receive from ratepayers was an achievement. Finding ways to drive down our operational costs is also pleasing. Delivering $3 million in Better Community Building grants to 13 community and sporting organisations to upgrade facilities to attract National and State events to Mackay will create economic activity.” What exciting projects can we look forward to in 2016? “I am looking forward to the renovation of the Dome into a high-tech, stateof-the-art city library. The Invest Mackay Events and Attraction Program has secured some great events and conferences for our region in 2016 which will boost the economy. I also look forward to working with the Diversify Mackay Leadership Alliance and the Whitsunday ROC, where Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday councils work together as a region.”

I was one of four mayors invited by our Premier to a trade mission in China and Japan, where we worked hard at promoting our respective regions and strengthening our relationships with potential investors. International investment is hugely beneficial to our region, creating more job opportunities and strengthening our position as a desirable tourist location.” Where has been your favourite place to relax in the Whitsundays in 2015? “You can’t beat the quality of the islands we have dotted along the coast. It has the same excitement and appeal of an overseas holiday yet they are so accessible. “When I spend time with my grandchildren I enjoy the foreshore, lagoon and playgrounds throughout the region.” What can the Whitsundays community look forward to in 2016? “With financial stability, our vision as articulated in our Corporate Plan, Whitsunday 2020, is well underway. We will continue to develop the Whitsunday Coast International Airport as a significant transport and export hub and regional economic driver.” www.corelife.com.au 29

The Evolution of

WhitsundayCoast Airport

Scott Waters

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WHITSUNDAY COAST AIRPORT IN 2015? “Whitsunday Coast Airport had a record-breaking performance during the previous financial year, with 283,000 passengers passing through the terminal. This represents a 17 percent growth from the previous financial period. Next financial year is set to be another record-breaker, with an estimated 360,000 passengers expected to pass through the doors, an unprecedented growth of 27 percent is estimated, which would be a remarkable result.” “Through one of our partner airlines, Jetstar, Whitsunday Coast Airport introduced direct flights from the Whitsundays to Melbourne in 2015. This is fantastic for our community as it gives locals an affordable option to visit friends and family in Victoria, while expanding the potential tourism market into Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. There are three direct flights from the Whitsunday Coast to Melbourne currently. We hope to expand this to four or five flights per week in 2016.” “Our continued relationship with Tigerair has also resulted in a fifth return service being added this summer between the Whitsundays and Sydney, delivering an estimated 1,800 additional visitors to the Whitsundays during this peak travel period.”

In September 2015, Whitsunday Regional Council’s CEO, Scott Waters, was given the opportunity to dedicate full-time to the future joint venture development of the Whitsunday Coast Airport. In three short months, a lot has happened, as Scott gives us a rundown of the highlights of 2015. CAN YOU UPDATE US WITH THE PROGRESS OF PRIVATE INVESTMENT INTO THE WHITSUNDAY COAST AIRPORT? “We have entered the final stage of negotiations with an Australian institutional investor and infrastructure manager who has a particular interest in the growth of airports. “It is fantastic that we have an Australian-based proponent from the private sector who recognises the potential of the Whitsunday Region. We are eager to grow this partnership to strengthen the tourism industry as well as our export industries across the Whitsundays.”

WHAT PLANS EXIST FOR THE WHITSUNDAY COAST AIRPORT IN 2016? “Our number one priority is to deliver growth and development opportunities for the Whitsunday community across a wide range of industry. By strengthening our transportation hub we can create more employment opportunities and continue to market the Whitsundays as a desirable holiday, business and investment location. “We are confident that we will be able to secure an international charter program in 2016. We are currently looking at the New Zealand market, to be able to offer Kiwi’s an attractive tropical holiday destination during the winter months. In turn, this also provides North and Central Queensland residents an opportunity to fly direct to New Zealand to experience an entirely different holiday experience through the snow and alpine environment.” “With our strengthening international relationship via the North East Asian free trade agreements, we are investigating direct charter flights to mainland China or Hong Kong to coincide with Golden Week, a seven day national holiday celebrated in China in October.” “We are working with the federal government to comply with international requirements to make this happen. The benefits to the Whitsunday community would be tremendous, with an increase in employment opportunities as well as increased numbers of international visitors into the Whitsundays.” 30 www.corelife.com.au

Scott’s New Year’s Resolution “To spend more time with family.

Mackay local Hamish Wright takes on the world in Manchester, UK. Mackay masters track cyclist, Hamish Wright, celebrated his most successful year on the bike yet in 2015. He began his campaign in February, taking out three from three state championship titles at Chandler Velodrome in Brisbane in the time trial, sprint and scratch race events. He backed this effort up by winning gold at the masters nationals at Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney, in the national sprint event. He then went on to claim silver in the scratch race, missing gold by mere centimetres. With an Australian title under his belt, Hamish’s ambition moved to winning the rainbow stripes, a symbol of a world championship title. He followed a rigorous training schedule for the next six months, no easy task considering he also works full time in Mackay as an area account manager for Holcim Concrete. In September, Hamish travelled to Manchester in the United Kingdom, the home of British cycling, to compete at the Masters World Track Cycling Championships. His best result was fifth place in the sprint event, a great result by anyone’s standards, but a disappointing one for Wright who was battling a chest infection.

“It certainly wasn’t the result I was hoping for. I was very disappointed at the time, I couldn’t perform at my best but I still gave it everything I had,” he said. His 2015 efforts were rewarded at the end of season prize giving with Cycling Queensland, where Wright was awarded the ‘best male masters track cyclist of the year’ in Queensland for 2015. Recognition for an outstanding season against fierce competition across the state.

Olympic Games medalist Steve Moneghetti wins at Hamilton Island Olympic marathon runner, Steve Moneghetti, delighted running enthusiasts when he arrived on Hamilton Island as a celebrity competitor at the Stamford Financial Hilly Half Marathon. An Australian icon and athletics royalty, Moneghetti medalled at four consecutive Commonwealth Games, including winning gold in Melbourne, 1994. He competed for Australia in four consecutive Olympic Games, won a bronze medal at the world championships in Athens in 1997 and has won a number of iconic marathon events, including Berlin and Tokyo.

But he’s not an athlete who turns up at a dinner and talks about how good he used to be. At age 52, he’s still competing in half marathons, and winning. Hamilton Island was no exception. The day before the half marathon, Hamilton Island Activities and Sports Events Manager, Stephen Jackson, arranged a coaching clinic, where athletes had the opportunity to gain valuable insight into how Moneghetti trained, and had the opportunity to go on a training jog with him around the island. When it came to the main event, it was none other than Moneghetti himself who burst over the horizon first. With enough energy to muster a cheeky smile at those who cheered him on, and high-fiving the spectators who lined the finish chute, Moneghetti crossed the line in first place, and set a new course record time of 1.36.22. His presence on Hamilton Island was enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike, who were treated to a special display of endurance from an Australian legend. www.corelife.com.au 31

Taking on the world Meet the Whitsunday’s power couple Lara Mitton and Anton Zafir

Lara’s New Year’s Resolution “Last year I promised to be more organised, I bought a diary and I want to improve on that again this year! I also want to achieve some personal goals at the gym and keep moving forward in the modelling industry.” Anton’s New Year’s Resolution “To keep on working and improving my Martial Arts, to keep developing my ability working toward my next fight. I would also like to keep developing and building up my gym to help more people become fitter and healthier.”

Growing up on the Sunshine Coast, Anton Zafir took to coastal life like a fish to water. He started Surf Lifesaving at age four and took to as many other sports as he could fit into a week, including surfing on the weekends. “I always had the dream of being an elite sportsman and the sport changed depending on what I was focused on at the time.” In 2015, that dream became a reality with a call-up to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Anton moved to the Whitsundays seven years ago for a six-month placement as a teacher. The position became permanent and he currently teaches at Proserpine State High School. He is also a Head Coach at Whitsunday Martial Arts, a business he started with good friend, Dan Zealand.

While a lot of his spare time is dedicated to training, Anton is also in a relationship with another Whitsunday’s high-achiever, Lara Mitton. Born and bred in the Whitsunday’s, Lara is a horse-mad country girl who spent her childhood riding and competing. Her love of animals and the outdoors led her to become a veterinary nurse. A job she is incredibly passionate about. “I love working with animals, but also the science behind it, everything from studying bacteria down the microscope to scooping poo! There are sad days of course, but the good far outweighs the bad.” But Lara’s success in 2015 had less to do with cats of the furry variety and everything to do with the catwalk, where she won two Australian modelling titles.

How did you become a MMA fighter?

Tell us about how you got into modelling

“I started training about seven years ago after a friend invited me to a week of free training. Around nine months later I had my first fight and I was hooked. I trained every day with Dan and over the next three years had around seven fights. We decided to open our own venue so we had a reliable and flexible training space, which is where the concept for Whitsunday Martial Arts came from.”

I was asked to do a shoot for City Life back in 2010 and I had such a great time! I love the concept of depicting a story through a picture, using body language and expression. I did a few more photoshoots before entering Miss Hawaiian Tropic a couple of years later, where I found that I loved the catwalk too!

What was it like getting a call-up to fight in the UFC?

I kicked a huge goal of mine this year. I wanted to win an Australian title, and I won two! I won the title of V8 Supermodel 2015 and I also won Miss Swimsuit USA, Australia. This means that I will be representing Australia in the world finals of Miss Swimsuit USA overseas in 2016.

“The call-up happened quickly. I received a message from a good mate of mine, fellow UFC fighter, Brendan O’Reilly, saying he had been hurt in training and had to pull out of his UFC fight. He suggested to Joe Silva that I take his place. I slept on this news and woke up to an email from Joe asking if I could make weight and get all my medicals in eight days. I said yes and then the biggest whirlwind week started.” “This was the pinnacle of what I have achieved in my fighting career to date.”

What’s next for 2016? “I have three more fights on my current contract with the UFC so my ambition for 2016 is to show what I am capable of on the world stage in the cage. I am looking to get into the winning circle inside the UFC and keep fighting the best guys in the world.” 32 www.corelife.com.au

What was your top modelling achievement in 2015?

How did you and Anton meet? In typical small-town fashion we had seen each other before and had spoken briefly. However it was at a local fight night where we got to know each other better. He was coaching the boys from his gym and I was a ring girl for the event. That was three years ago now.

What is your ambition for 2016? My main focus is getting prepared for Swimsuit USA. I would love to get in the top 10!

Eco Barge Clean Seas - Environmental guardian angels If everyone made it their New Year’s Resolution to pick up one piece of litter for disposal every day, it would make an incredible difference. Eco Barge Clean Seas Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation with a passionate committee and volunteers dedicated to cleaning up Mackay and the Whitsundays. From the four initiatives run by Eco Barge Clean Seas, what were the highlights of each program in 2015? WHITSUNDAY MARINE DEBRIS REMOVAL PROGRAM

This year we undertook our 200th trip since the launch of the program in July 2009. We removed 20,965 kilograms of marine debris this year, which has made this the most successful year ever for marine debris removal. WHITSUNDAY TURTLE RESCUE CENTREÂ

This year we rescued 24 turtles, with eight of these being able to be released after a successful recovery. Every single release is a celebration for everyone involved!

How can people help? It is important to recognise that our actions on land can have an impact on the marine environment. To assist our important work we have partnership opportunities available which are developed to reflect the unique needs of supporting partners. Eco Barge would not exist without the hundreds of volunteers that work tirelessly to protect our environment and save our turtles. Anyone that is interested in getting involved can register their details at www. ecobargecleanseas.org.au. If you do not live locally, you can also help by providing a donation, with all money going directly to removing marine debris and providing care for turtles.

CLEAN STREETS AND CREEKS

Through the efforts of our volunteers, 2,560 kilograms of local land-based litter was removed this year and is therefore no longer at risk of entering the ocean where it could impact our marine life through entanglement or ingestion. MACKAY COASTAL CLEAN UP

The Mackay Coastal Clean Up also focuses on prevention and this year we undertook our sixth weekend-long event. This program is now responsible for removing a total of 24,806 kilograms from beaches in Mackay and Sarina since 2012. Tell us about the Eco Ambassador initiative launched in 2015. Two students from each local Reef Guardian school were selected to learn about how to protect our local marine environment and marine life from the threats of marine debris. These students then went back to their schools to promote the mission of Eco Barge.

Katrina Hoare

Community champion

Katrina Hoare is one of Mackay’s most giving people, a community champion. Despite having a tough 2015, including health issues and being made redundant after 11 years, she continues to give her time to local organisations in need. In a challenging work climate, she didn’t give up. Instead, she registered an ABN and took on work to provide administration support for four local businesses. How did you become involved with Scouts? “My godson and his family have been involved with Scouting since before he was born so I have been on the ridges of the Scouting movement for more than 20 years. Banksia Scout Group had been without a Group Leader for a while and there was talk of closing the doors, so I accepted the offer of Group Leader.” Tell us about the award nominations you received in 2015. “I was nominated for a 2015 Australia Day “Lori Burgess Community Volunteer Award” with Mackay Regional Council. As one of 25 nominations received for the award, it was an honour to be nominated into this group of dedicated volunteers within our region. Earlier this year, I also received a Special Services Award from Scouts Association of Australia, Queensland Branch. As one of the highest honours which can be bestowed within the movement on an Adult Member, it was approved by Sir Peter Cosgrove and is very special to me.” What other organisations do you volunteer with? “All Abilities Mackay - after meeting Bec Nicol and seeing the amazing work she has done for children with disabilities, financially and therapeutic. Crime Stoppers Mackay Area Volunteer Committee was an idea I had from talking to the kids at Banksia Scout Group.” For those who would like to volunteer but don’t know where to start, what advice can you give them? “Don’t burn yourself out putting your hand up for everything. Look around and find something that reflects your beliefs or convictions.”

The power of solar drives Kon Flaherty business expansion Did you know that every hour the sun beams onto earth, it provides enough energy to satisfy global energy needs for an entire year? With continual advancements in efficiency, solar energy had been rapidly growing in popularity. In Mackay and the Whitsundays where sunshine hours are plentiful, more and more people are reaping the financial benefits of installing solar from Green Energy Technologies. How does Green Energy Technologies keep up with advancement in solar energy? This year has been exciting for solar technology and we have been committed to staying at the forefront of that advancement. While the world is talking about renewable energy, Tesla and the like, we have been offering solar batteries and cutting-edge solar panels to our local community. Businesses which use a substantial amount of electricity, can they benefit from solar? Yes, of course! In November we installed a 65kw system on Bushmans Bakery in North Mackay, which is just one example of businesses around Mackay and the Whitsundays who are adopting solar as a cash positive business decision. How many homes made the switch with Green Energy Technologies in 2015? We helped more than 300 homes with solar solutions in 2015 alone. Why should homes consider a solar solution in 2016? Our business is to help save businesses and households money and we know a solar installation can do that. Looking after the environment is also a positive by-product of what we do, but our primary focus is to help households save money. With a new showroom in North Mackay as well as one in Cannonvale, we have made ourselves more accessible to a wider community, covering the Whitsunday and Mackay regions. We are a local business, so not only are you saving yourself money when you choose to go solar, but you’re also investing into the local community. Check out our website, greenenergytechnologies.com.au, to find a host of testimonials from locals on how installing solar has saved them money.

2015 The year of the

The Whitsunday Brahmans rewrote the history books in 2015 when both A and reserve grade teams took out dual premiership grand final titles at Mackay Stadium. Since the Brahmans joined the Mackay and District Rugby League premiership in 1994, this was the first time the A-grade had won the competition, a victory made sweeter with the reserve grade also winning their competition in the same season. Leading the game at halftime 10-4, the Brahmans held onto their lead to finish 21-12 over Sarina. With Sarina finishing as minor premiers, the Brahman’s win was considered an upset, however, it left loyal Whitsunday fans with grins from ear to ear. The reserves ended their season with a crushing defeat over Moranbah, 30-4 following a rampant first half. MEMORABLE INDIVIDUAL MOMENTS FROM 2015 Ivan Petelo, playing 70 minutes of outstanding rugby league in the front row in the grand final. Usually unheard of for a big front rower.

Sam Keys playing half of the season with a hand in need of surgery. David Kay, who is still eligible for under 18s, played his second season in A-grade. He has been consistently a strong performer in the team throughout the past two seasons. His try-saving tackle in the semifinal against Sarina to help the Brahmans win the game and his outstanding attacking runs in the grand final were a huge highlight for the fans. MEMORABLE TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS 2015 With the Sarina Crocodiles winning the minor premiership, the crocs were favourites heading into semifinal time. With the penalty count against them in the first half, it took a team with a lot of heart to stand up to the bruising encounter. Winning by the slimmest of margins, the Brahmans won the semifinal bash-a-thon, 18-16, showing composure and character. Sarina then had to defeat Souths Sharks in the preliminary final to meet the Brahmans again in the grand final. Brahmans’ James Webb commented that while the grand final win will be the one reflected in glory in the history books, it was

the semifinal win which will be remembered by players as the greatest team triumph of the 2015 season. “Beating Sarina in the semifinal, after they had 20 minutes solid on our try line in the second half, showed massive character,” he said. Brahmans’ Michael Lee agreed. “Our team was gassed. However, we stayed strong as a defensive unit and played for each other, holding out a very determined attacking team,” Michael said. WHAT WAS THE SECRET TO THE BRAHMAN’S SUCCESS IN 2015?

Proud to sponsor the Brahmans!

The A-grade Brahmans will be playing a trial game in conjunction with the Mackay Cutters V North Queensland Cowboys under-20s game, held in Proserpine at Les Stagg Oval, February 13. Round one kicks off in April, and 2016 members cards will be sent out to residences in the Whitsunday region. The Brahmans will be bleeding green in 2016 to hold onto their title, and are looking for community support. Without the same funding as larger clubs, the Brahmans are dependent on the generous sponsorship from businesses and members of the Whitsunday community. Without these wonderful sponsors, the club wouldn’t function. Support the Whitsunday Brahmans and show your faith in green for 2016. QBCC: 1167764. TONIC 6269

James Webb and Michael Lee explain. “A basic team plan got us back on track. Sammy Gannon was the strength and conditioning coach. This was something we had lacked in the past, and a big factor behind the grand final win,” James said. Michael continued, “The A-grade and reserve teams 6269-GJ WS. 2220wx60h ad.qxp_Layout 1 18/12/2015 11:13 AM Page 1 trained all year as a squad not as individual teams. In A-grade we used more

than 30 players throughout the year, even some under 18’s made their debut. Winning grand finals doesn’t only take the 17 players that played on the day, it takes the whole group that played throughout the year. This inclusive group atmosphere also created a club brotherhood culture that was one of the main reasons we were successful in 2015,” he said.

Cowboys U20s to play in Proserpine in February! The Absolute Enterprises Mackay Cutters are thirsty for their first win against the North Queensland Cowboys under-20s in the promotional pre-season trial match this February.

re-wrote the history books in 2015 with dual premierships, winning both A and reserve grade grand finals at Stadium Mackay.

With both teams desperate for a win, players will be fired up to perform in what could determine their inclusion into representative teams this season.

Mackay Cutters CEO, Ross Aldridge, commented that the Proserpine fixture would reward the enthusiastic fans who have been passionately backing the Brahmans for many seasons.

The annual clash is one of the most highly-anticipated games of rugby league to be held in the Mackay and Whitsundays. However, to date, the Cutters haven’t yet emerged victorious.

“The Brahman supporters are some of the most passionate fans in the game. They love their team and love their footy, so it was only fair to bring this great game to their home turf,” he said.

In last year’s memorable game held in Mackay, the Cutters came agonizingly close to victory after a slow start. This year, their focus will be on producing a solid 80 minutes from start to finish. In recognition of the outstanding season had by the Whitsunday Brahmans, this year’s Cutters V Cowboys clash will be held in Proserpine. The Brahmans

With both teams desperate for a win, players will be fired up to perform in what could determine their inclusion into representative teams this season. The trial game represents the pathway that many rugby league players strive to achieve, from playing junior representative to making the Cowboys under-20s, then into senior positions with the Mackay Cutters before seeking selection with a NRL premiership team. Young Brahmans will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Proserpine-born Travis Waddell, who played junior football for the Brahmans and now plays for the Brisbane Broncos. The game is currently scheduled to be played on 13 February. However, for confirmed details on the fixture and kick-off time, visit mackaycutters.com.au or check out the Mackay Cutters on Facebook. #carnthecutters

relaxing for the adults.”

Tegan Marsden and her partner craved a new adventure and change of lifestyle for their two children. They had spent the past six years living in Southeast Gippsland, when a visit to family friends in Airlie Beach opened a new world of possibility.

“We’re all so busy during the week that the weekend is the time we take to relax, whether it’s exploring the beautiful coastline or watching movies on the couch with popcorn,” Tegan said.

She fell in love with the blue water and the lure of the islands and didn’t want the vacation to end. Now, it’s Tegan’s backyard. One she loves to show off through her position as a local agent sales executive with Whitsunday Transit. “I have loved exploring the Whitsundays so far. Whitehaven Beach is beautiful! I took my family to Daydream Island and it was so much fun for the kids yet 40 www.corelife.com.au

With the announcement that the Whitsunday Coast Airport may be chartering international flights in 2016, Tegan will have the opportunity to show many more visitors the beauty of the Whitsundays. “Whitsunday Transit has been meeting every flight into and out of Proserpine Airport for many years, so we are proud to announce the inclusion of a new, state-of-the-art, airport transfer coach to our fleet. This will ensure visitors

experience Whitsunday luxury from the moment they arrive and will be left with a lasting impression when they leave, if they leave of course! The luxurious coach is fully air-conditioned and features comfortable seating with individual seat belts, large windows, to enjoy the views en route, and extensive luggage space to cater for large groups. The exterior wrap design also certainly catches the eye with a distinctive Whitsundays vista. It’s a great feeling to work for a company who is progressive and is looking forward to a positive future in tourism. It’s a family-oriented business and I’ve been made to feel like part of the family,” Tegan said. Tegan’s hidden talent was exposed at last year’s Christmas party, when the Whitsunday Transit team

discovered she can sing! “My older sister and I have always sung together, dancing around the house with broom sticks and mop handles. We are both pretty good. Maybe in the future we will audition for X Factor but for now I am happy to just sing and dance at home with my children,” she said. Whitsunday Transit’s significant investment is a positive sign for the local tourism industry. We hope the seamless experience attracts more people like Tegan, who see it, love it and move to the wonderful Whitsundays. Karen’s New Year’s Resolution “I never set one! You never know what tomorrow will bring so I face each day with positivity and just get on with it.”

Don Cameron and Karen Rix MASTER BUTCHERS WHITSUNDAY

For the best barbecue, you can’t beat great meat, and it’s just not an Aussie sizzle without sensational snags! Luckily for Whitsunday residents, the best sausages in the country are made right here, at Master Butchers Whitsunday. Owners, Don Cameron and Karen Rix, took their Italian Casalinga sausages to the 2015 National Sausage King Championships in Adelaide and took out the top honours in the continental category, beating more than 30 other finalists. Getting to the nationals is no easy task, first their sausages had to win at both regional and state levels to be eligible. One of Don and Karen’s passions is to create exciting gourmet flavours that can be cooked on the barbecue, including more than 60 different varieties of sausages alone. Identifying that people want to cook deliciously unique meals on the barbecue led to the couple’s second Whitsunday butchery, ‘MBW on the Barbie’ in the Whitsunday Shopping Centre in Cannonvale. It’s a far cry from when the couple first took over the butcher shop in Stewart Drive in 2009, which started with one butcher and one casual. “We’re excited to be providing the local community with more employment opportunities as our business grows. As we’ve expanded our products to include more taste selections and cuts of meat, we’ve grown to a team of 17 across two stores. Our Stewart Drive shop has physically doubled in www.corelife.com.au 42

size and is soon to grow again,” Don said. “It’s an example of how if you shop local and support local businesses, in turn there are better employment opportunities for everyone. Not only do the products taste better, but you’re putting money into a local business who hire locals and spend their money locally,” Karen said. Giving back to the local community is also important to Don and Karen, who donate meat trays and sausages to local clubs for raffles and sausage sizzles and meat to community charities providing Christmas lunch to those in need. Don is also fundraising for CareFlight and will soon be undertaking the Kakadu Challenge in Australia’s top end. Karen had a challenge of her own in 2013 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Getting through the chemotherapy was one of the hardest battles she fought, but she beat it, and credits positivity in getting her through. “It’s a hard slog, but it was important to stay positive. In today’s world, it’s more important than ever to smile at a stranger. It may be the only smile they receive all day and it might just make their day. You never know what other people are going through, so be kind and take the time to smile,” she said. Put the sizzle back into your summer, with award-winning snags from Master Butchers Whitsunday.

Being on the water has always been a passion for Jeremy and Nicole Graham. Jeremy started his 17 year Royal Navel career at age 14 and both met while working on P&O Cruise ships out of the UK. After travelling the globe, Nicole had an opportunity to work back on Hamilton Island in the PR and Marketing department. Jeremy followed and fell in love with the Whitsundays. The corporate world took them to Sydney, Nicole’s hometown, where Jeremy pursued his career as a senior IT systems engineer and Nicole in public relations and event management, knowing full well it was part of the plan to return to the Whitsundays. Five years later, the build of their dream home, Jeremy and Nicole settled back into the Whitsundays lifestyle. Jeremy’s specialised IT knowledge wasn’t needed in regional Queensland so the opportunity to purchase their first boat was inevitable. Sundowner was created 10 years ago; a floating venue, specialising in sunset cruises and everything wedding, from pre wedding icebreakers, intimate ceremonies, beach drop offs and casual receptions to afterparties. Birthday parties and corporate events are also popular. Having a background in event management, Nicole thrives on putting together a great show and ensures all events go off without a hitch. The next challenge presented itself in the purchase of a 72ft timber ketch, the beautiful Lady Enid. “As soon as my husband saw Enid, he fell in love,” Nicole said.

Lady Enid also raced in five Sydney to Hobart’s and sealed her place in Australian racing history when she came first over the line in the first ever Sydney – Brisbane (now Mooloolaba) race in 1964. “We wanted to create a unique experience that was not available to the Airlie Beach day sailing market; a niche product that offers guests a truly memorable day of sailing on this iconic gentleman’s racer,” Nicole said. Using the finest local produce and prepared from the award winning restaurant Fish d’Vine, food is undoubtedly a feature of this sailing experience. “We are lucky to have found an amazing group of people who crew Lady Enid and who love her like we do. Their experience, as well as small numbers per cruise, means we can guarantee truly exceptional service,” Jeremy said. Nicole admits that the lifestyle is busy, but one that their children, Georgie and Bracken, adore. “Our 3 year old was climbing up the mast of Enid from day one. No fear, only adventure so I am sure his love of boats will grow with the business.”

“Earlier this year during the refit in Ballina, I had the pleasure of meeting Enid in person, at 95 she had many fond memories to share including; Lady Enid being a favourite of Sir Frank Packer to impress his business colleagues on Sydney Harbor and their elaborate parties,” Jeremy said.

Amie Chalmers ADAM & EVE

PASSIONATE, CHARISMATIC, DRIVEN.

Everything you want in your hairdresser and more. If you’ve been lucky enough to have Amie Chalmers from Adam and Eve Hair transform your style, no doubt you’ll already be nodding your head in agreeance. Amie’s reputation as one of the region’s most talented colourists precedes her, with regular clients travelling from as far as Mackay and Bowen for appointments. Owning her own salon had always been the driving force behind her success, so when the opportunity arose to purchase Adam and Eve Hair in late 2015, Amie knew this was what she had been working towards. “It was in that very moment I felt like my hard work over 10 years of hairdressing had finally paid off. I have always believed that if it is the right time to chase your dreams, there will be a sign to show you the right path to follow and if it is meant to be, it will be easy. “The transition of taking over Adam and Eve with a lot of hard work and support was relatively easy. However, I couldn’t have done it without the amazing support I received from the previous owner, Bec, as well as friends and, of course, my mum. In turn, I believe it was meant to be!” Between Amie and her talented stylists, Shana and Jess, Adam and Eve provide clients with more than 24 years of combined experience across Australia and overseas. Amie commented, “Adam and Eve always have provided and will continue to offer the highest level of professionalism and customer service in the area.” When she’s not armed with scissors and straighteners, Amie loves to be out with friends at one of Airlie’s great restaurants or catching a local event. “There are so many talented business people in the Whitsundays. It’s always a pleasure to get to know clients in the hairdressing chair, then experience their talent and expertise by visiting them at their business.” With the arrival of 2016, Amie’s focus is now on growing the Adam and Eve brand and to provide more surprises and service to her clients. “I have a few ideas that I intend on introducing to the salon. Watch this space!” With experienced hands that understand hair and service that never fails to bring a smile, you’ll leave Adam and Eve with more than great hair. You’ll leave feeling great about you! www.corelife.com.au 44

LEW shines for 21 years HANNY & CRAIG

A 21st birthday is a momentous occasion because it signifies a coming of age. When it comes to 21 years in business, this coming of age represents hard work, sacrifice and a high level of dedication to its customers. If you ask Leichhardt Electrical Wholesalers (LEW) what its secret to success has been, it comes down to two simple words, customer service. Owners, Craig and Hanny Spence, believe that being locally owned and operated makes the difference. “Being locally owned and operated gives us the opportunity to make our own decisions based on what our clients and our area demand. We call the shots. We don’t have a head office to answer to which gives us the freedom to personalise our service and, best of all, our money stays local,” Hanny said. LEW originated in the suburb of Leichhardt in Sydney. Hanny’s parents opened the store in 1985 after emigrating from Holland in 1970. Hanny’s brother and his wife Jo-Anne run the Sydney store while Craig and Hanny own and operate the Cannonvale store. If you’ve stayed in one of Airlie Beach’s beautiful resorts then chances are you may have seen some of LEW’s specialty lights. “We’ve been fortunate over the years to supply many of the resorts in Airlie Beach with their lighting. We are able to source unique lighting concepts from a large range of suppliers, so we can offer a large selection while remaining competitively priced,” Craig said. Hanny commented that raising their two sons, Aden (15) and Connor (13) has been a joy. “Craig and I were raised among the hustle and bustle of inner-city Sydney so, in contrast, the livelihood our boys get to experience on a tranquil five acres is bliss. They can ride their motorbikes in a safe environment and just be boys,” she said.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ICONIC BRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY

With many years dedicated to the business, it’s important to Hanny and Craig to spend time with family when possible. In 2015, Craig’s parents both turned 80 and celebrated with a family holiday in Vietnam. “It had been more than five years since we were all together with Craig’s parents, his sister and their two children. No computers, wonderful food, a cultural experience for the kids and plenty of relaxation.” “I love how it doesn’t matter how long it is between visits, the cousins are always as though they had seen each other yesterday,” Hanny said. If you can’t escape on your own overseas adventure, they say a change is as good as a holiday, so what will it be? A touch of romance with a French-inspired chandelier, a New York loft influenced floor lamp or modern and minimalistic LED? If the thought of a sophisticated waterfront reception venue arouses your curiosity, we invite you to explore Lure, Abell Point Marina. Earthy and elegant, Lure is the Whitsunday’s newest function and conference venue, located waterfront in the heart of Abell Point Marina. Designed by Amara Vanek, Lure incorporates a natural nautical theme that is in keeping with its surroundings and existing building design. With a rock wall façade on the bar and illuminated glass top to mimic rippling water, the design utilises a contemporary yacht theme blended with natural features. Step inside and be taken on your own private voyage. The ceiling and walls are lavished in wooden paneling to give the luxe feel of a yacht, while rope detailing and amber glass light fittings are reminiscent of a Victorian-era sailing ship. The Reception entrance to the Compass Bar features a hand painted Mariner’s Compass pointing true North, which also serves as the dance floor. Two function rooms are located each side of the bar, fitted with state of the art audio visual equipment and wireless microphones. Both rooms feature dazzling Heracleum lights, representing the sparkling stars which have guided mariners for centuries. Directly in front of the reception area is the waterfront balcony, with sailtailored chairs and small tables for pre-function cocktails or to be used as a meet and greet area. Not forgetting the amenities, the toilets are a talking point themselves. The men’s side exudes masculinity with a 1940s pirate’s poster and vintage pedestal hand basins. SIGNS YOU SHOULD BE SAYING “I DON’T” INSTEAD OF “I DO” There is a difference between premarital nerves and not being ready for a lifetime commitment. If the signs are becoming glaring obvious, think long and hard about the reasons why you’ve committed to walking down the aisle. “WE’VE BEEN TOGETHER FOR AGES” People develop different personalities over time. Do you enjoy their company? Do you love their attributes? Does the thought of spending eternity together make you excited? If you plan on marrying them, all of those answers should have been yes.

“TICK TOCK”

“ISN’T IT NATURAL FOR THE SPARK TO BE GONE?”

No, no, no, no and no. Not good reasons to get married. It may seem like a tough decision to make, but ultimately, that ring on your finger won’t make you any happier.

No, not really. A lot of couples assume that it’s just part of a relationships progression, that arguing more, spending more time apart and a rapidly decreasing sex life is normal. You should still feel a flutter of excitement when you think about them. You want to fulfil their desires, and a sex life that you are both happy with is important. “YOU FANTASIZE ABOUT BEING WITH SOMEONE ELSE” It’s normal for men and women in happy relationships to think about other people. Acting on those thoughts, however, is a different story. You can’t have the excitement of a fling while maintaining the security of a relationship.

CALLING ALL 2016 BRIDES

You’re worried you won’t find anyone else who will love you. You’re getting older. You want to have children. You’re afraid to be alone. All of your friends are getting married.

“COLD FEET” It’s natural to be nervous leading up to your wedding day. If you’re worried about the weather, the catering, the flowers, these are all natural nerves. However if you know deep within your heart that you love your fiancé, and you are excited to think about your future together, then take a deep breath, smile, and walk down the aisle with your head held high, knowing this will end up being one of the happiest days of your life.

BRIDESMAID DUTIES Yes, duties. Think of the bride being the Queen, and unfortunately in this instance, you aren’t even a princess. Nope, you’re the queen’s maid…the bride’s maid! THE GOLDEN RULE of being a bridesmaid, is to always remember that this wedding is about two people and two people only. Unfortunately that’s not you and her, it’s her and her husband-to-be. NUMBER TWO, is that if you don’t have anything to nice to say about the bride’s choices, it’s best that you zip it. Respect her decisions and support her in any way you can, even if it means walking up the aisle in a hideous dress. If she loves it, then you love it. Effectively you are a slave to your bride. With all those layers of dress, garter, corset and whatever else the bride is using under there to suck it all in, guess who will need assistance every time she needs to nervously pee. Yep, that’s right. You’re about to get to know your best friend like never before. During Roman times, bridesmaids and groomsmen used to dress almost identical to the bride and groom, in order to outsmart evil spirits, who were believed to attend wedding ceremonies and curse the married couple. Things have changed, and now those evil spirits are more commonly referred to as the mother-in-law, the bitter ex-girlfriend or the horribly drunk uncle, so it’s your duty to run interference if things look as though they are about to turn ugly. Of course not all mother-in-laws are mean, and the groom’s mother can often be overlooked, even though she is watching her baby

go through one of life’s greatest moments too. She may be in need of a hug, or a friendly ear to chat to. While there is a lot of responsibility and expense that can come with being a bridesmaid, there are also limitless possibilities for having the time of your life. You will be photographed looking so stunning that you consider creating your own catalogue of awesome, because seriously, on that day you could have been a model. You own that aisle in your ridiculously high heels, feeling like a superhero for making it to the front without falling flat on your face. And when all the duties are complete, and the bride is looking blissful, you can own the dance floor like a boss. NOW GO OUT THERE AND BE THE BEST BRIDESMAID EVER! DANCE, DRINK, LAUGH AND CELEBRATE THE BRIDE-TO-BE. SHE WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT.

Perfect Wedding Flowers FOR THE

MAKE THEM AN EXPRESSION OF YOU

You’ve found the perfect dress and you’ve decided on the colour scheme, now it’s time to complete your look with wedding flowers, and most importantly your beautiful bouquet! Incorporating flowers into a wedding has been popular since Roman times when the bride wore a garland of herbs and orange blossoms around her head as a symbol of fertility. Queen Victoria, however, was the first to carry a bridal bouquet made of fresh flowers. Each flower in the bouquet had its own meaning, bringing good luck to the marriage. Today, the bouquet is more an expression of uniqueness, personality and style, reflecting a brides colour preferences and the tone of her wedding dress. For the Le Sorelle Sisters being chosen by a bride to design her wedding flowers and bouquet is a privilege and they are proud to say many brides stay in contact, even after their wedding. Le Sorelle is passionate about good old fashioned service and work closely with every bride ensuring personality and taste is embodied in overall look and design. Le Sorelle has been operating for five years and although they are one of the youngest in the business they see that as an advantage as they have a modern flare and are abreast of the latest trends. Le Sorelle are the exclusive supplier to Hayman Island and their designs suit clients with an appreciation for detail, quality and style. It is best to order your wedding flowers six months before your wedding. You can choose to have a face to face consultation with Le Sorelle or simply fill-in their detailed online enquiry form. Having images of other bouquets is also

useful in the design process. Le Sorelle then work with you to create the right design at the right price, and are happy to go back and forth until they achieve what you have always dreamed of. All their flowers have a high stem count and utilise a wide variety of blooms, ensuring a lush, textural aesthetic. Three weeks before your wedding the flowers are ordered. They generally arrive the week of your wedding and the up most care is taken to ensure each bloom is perfect. Le Sorelle spend hours conditioning each individual bloom, from stripping leaves, plucking bruised petals, removing thorns, wiring delicate flowers, trimming the ends and changing water every day. With a dedication to quality and a passion for design Le Sorelle are fast becoming the market leaders. If you are looking for wedding flowers and a bouquet that is unique to you and truly represents your personality then Le Sorelle would love to work with you. They provide a free itemised quote and deliver your flowers straight to your door on your wedding day.

BEFORE

After 1 treatment

Like all brides-to-be, having good skin on your day is highly warranted. I have always been cautious of my skin but never knew what my skin needed or how to maintain it. After seeing Sarah for an IPL treatment and discussing my skin, she recommended a skin care program tailored to my skin and my budget. With my wedding fast approaching I decided to go a head with the program. The program consisted of a peel as well as pre and post skin care. Having never had a peel, Sarah thoroughly explained the process. It was initial suggested I may need up to 3 peels, however, I have been extremely happy with the results after only 1 peel. The peel was a relaxing experience for me. It wasnยนt uncomfortable or painful in anyway. Sar-

ah is highly professional, has a wealth of knowledge and she expressed a genuine care for my skin and myself. The peel has visibly reduced redness and scarring in my face. Thanks to Sarahยนs advice and the treatment, my skin is looking clear and healthy and ready for my big day in January 2016.

Courtney uses cosmedix and Teen Aspect and has had a single Timeless peel. Her sun protection and home product is paramount in maintaining her results.

Favourite Movie: Highlander Starsign: Sagittarius Favourite Music: Bruce Springsteen Favourite Food: Steak Favourite Colour: Maroon From the rainforest of Tully to the reef of the Whitsunday’s, Troy Jones ended a 12 year career managing the Tigers Leagues Club to become the General Manager of the Whitsunday Sailing Club. While he and his partner craved a change of lifestyle, it was the potential he saw in the club which lured him to the tourist mecca of Airlie Beach. “It has the potential to be great and we want to make it the destination where locals want to catch up. We have great food, friendly staff and an incredible view. Membership is only $5 and that entitles members to discounts on food and drink. More often than not people make more than their membership cost back in savings on their first night out,” Troy said. Families are also welcome, with a bouncy castle every Sunday to keep the wee ones entertained. The Whitsunday Sailing Club also provides a range of maritime training from Personal Watercraft licences to Certificates of Sea Safety and Deck qualifications.

Tell us something that most of your clients won’t know about you? When I don’t have surgical tools in my hand I’m pretty handy at home with a pair of tongs. I enjoy cooking and my specialty is to make a pretty mean steak and mushroom sauce. What is your most memorable holiday? My favourite holiday was a trip to Ireland. It’s a beautiful country and a highlight was meeting all of Gillian’s family for the first time. What is a favourite possession you own? When I get time to myself I love to listen to music. I have a record player with a collection of old vinyls that I love to listen to.

What can we find you doing on the weekend? “At the moment I don’t get much time away from the sailing club so any time I get to spend with my partner is precious. I love a good game of golf and it’s on my bucket-list to get out to Dent Island for a round.” What’s a bucket-list event you’ve attended? Bruce Springsteen is my music religion, so any of his concerts will always top the list. When he toured Australia I made a weeklong holiday out of his concerts, seeing him in Brisbane, Sydney and then in the Hunter Valley.

Fast 5 facts about Ken Starsign: Libra Favourite Colour: Blue Favourite Movie: Coach Carter Favourite Food: My wife’s lasagna Favourite band: Eagles or Abba – either will have me dancing He has an unmistakable voice which many Mackay locals or basketball fans will still remember.Ken Furdek moved to Mackay from Mount Isa in 1986 to begin a career in radio with 4MK. His media career took him to Tasmania, Melbourne and Townsville before he returned to Mackay in 1997. He spent time as a Channel Ten television commentator for the National Basketball League during the 1990s, working in both TV and radio for an impressive 20 years. A career highlight was working with the Olympic News Service at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Now he and his team at the Mackay Regional Council are the communication conduit connecting the council with media and the community. We put Ken in the Hot Seat to find out more.

Tell us about your position with the Mackay Regional Council (MRC). My role is the Corporate Communications and Marketing Manager. I have a great team that strives to keep our community informed about council via www.corelife.com.au 74 40 www.corelife.com.au

Facebook, the website, media and all other communication and marketing material produced by council.

The #MackayPride campaign is well-known throughout the community, where did the initiative come from? It started when Mayor Deirdre Comerford wanted a short video produced for the 2014 Local Government Association State Conference held in Mackay. We wanted to do something different that showcased the interesting facts about our region and why we should have pride in where we live. #MackayPride really went to another level when given the opportunity to brand 15 new waste trucks with specially designed livery. It was recently named the Best Advertising Campaign across all media at the 2015 Queensland Multimedia Awards in Cairns.

What was your media position at the Sydney Olympics? Working for the Olympic News Service, I was based at Darling Harbour covering judo, fencing and weightlifting. It was a fantastic opportunity to work as a supervisor providing direction for a team of reporters, who were tasked with getting quotes from the athletes after events.

Other than #MackayPride, what other passions do you take pride in? Firstly, my family. I am married to a wonderful woman, Angelina, and we have two adult children Tamara 21 and Brendan 19. I’m also passionate about basketball and have been involved in the sport since I was 9. You can still find me on a basketball court coaching every week.

What’s the best holiday you have taken? My wife and I toured Europe in May this year and we want to go back! We loved it, particularly Holland.

Trust No One With Your Health! Sounds like a strange thing to say, being a naturopath and all, but I mean it. Trust no one. There is no naturopath, doctor, website, dietician or health consultant who will understand your body like you do. It is unfortunate in this day that so many companies are using the promise of health to sell sub-standard vitamins, oils and potions to the public. Does everyone really need a green protein shake a day? While working in Sydney over the weekend, I was approached by a very friendly lady at a dinner held after a seminar I was attending. She asked me what I did for work. She then dove in to telling me why I should sell her essential oils, how they are “scientifically proven to fix cancers, arthritis and infectious diseases”. Seriously? The thing that stung me the most is when she mentioned what she probably thought would secure the deal… “Rowena, you have the potential to make a lot of money from this”. My response: “The day I am using financial gain as the reason for prescribing a medicine I am no longer a Clinical Naturopath.” I then started talking about her lovely handbag and made my excuse to move on as quickly as possible!

Let me just say, I’m not doubting that her oils might be a nice product, but please don’t try and convince me that you can cure such serious ailments with an all-purpose bottle of oil you keep in your Hermes handbag. It is my personal belief that the blood gives us the answers we need. If a person is deficient in a vitamin or mineral, it needs to be tested, rather than buying hundreds of dollars of vitamins and feeling no different. Food needs to be our first source of nutrition, not tablets. Yes, I do prescribe medicines in my clinic, but only to those I have tested or require a specialised formula for a condition. Even these medicines should be short term. Eventually, the aim is to see the body heal itself with a good diet and for many of us this is an achievable option. So trust no one but your blood. Don’t let the hype get to you. Refuse the idea of a certain medicine, health shake or oil being the answer to everyone’s woes. We are individuals and our body is unique, therefore the prescription must be unique. Rowena Kissun Clinical Naturopath (Integrative Medicine)

Hearing health services growing in 2016 2016 is going to be an eventful year for Clarity Hearing Solutions with several new exciting programs and product releases due. Probably the biggest new change for us and some of our patients will be the roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Townsville and district as a test site. Hearing health is included in the NDIS program and going by what has rolled out in other test sites there may well be quite a lot of hearing and audiological assistance available to people who may have been ineligible for assistance in the past. Those that are currently obtaining services may also be eligible for further services and devices. We will provide more details once we know more but to check your eligibility and what assistance some preliminary details are available on the NDIS website. In 2016 we will also add even more remote sites to our indigenous audiological outreach services. We have been contracted by state, federal and

private organisations to provide paediatric audiology services to Indigenous communities in remote and regional areas for several years now, including as far west as Charleville and Cunnamulla. We will also be adding Palm Island, Quilpie, Mitchell and Surat to our outreach services. We are very passionate about these services and look forward to assisting in any way we can to improve the hearing health within Indigenous communities.

where we may only be running clinics every few months. Generally, when we first switch on a Cochlear implant the nerves adapt very quickly and the implant needs reprogramming every 1-2 weeks. For those patients in remote areas their progress is a little slower as they have less initial mapping sessions due to the length of time between visits. To be able to do weekly or fortnightly maps via the Internet would significantly increase the speed of their speech intelligibility.

This year will also be a big year for Cochlear implants with all three Australian TGA approved manufacturers releasing new processors and implants. Whispers through the grapevine suggest the new releases have improved and simpler Bluetooth functions, smaller sizes, improved reliability for moisture, improved sound quality and the possibility of remote Internet mapping (programming of implants). If this last feature is available then it will provide a significant assistance for our remote patients in areas

2015 saw the implementation of our diagnostic vestibular/ balance assessment program for those with vertigo, dizziness, disequilibrium or balance disorders. In 2016 we hope to expand our services further and assist with referral pathways for treatment, including vestibular rehabilitation. I personally feel there is very little awareness about balance/vestibular/ dizziness pathologies and the treatment pathways available.

GRANT COLLINS Principal Audiologist/Owner Clarity Hearing Solutions

Acute or chronic vertigo, dizziness or disequilibrium is probably more debilitating than any hearing loss and the impact it has on your lifestyle is significant, particularly with seniors where a fall can mean a broken hip or other serious repercussions. Finally 2016 will see our audiologist team expand by another two clinicians as we take on another intern audiologist and clinical audiologist. Competition for the intern places was significant as we offered intern places only to graduating Queensland audiologists, and out of the 30 2015 graduates 25 applied for positions in North Queensland. We were very lucky to have the pick of some of the brightest graduates in that year.

We will reach our goals

no matter

what!

Every year around this time, there’s a mass migration of humans that’s on a scale resembling the great beast migrations in Africa. Hundreds of millions of us get up off the couch, shake the Christmas tinsel off, and embark on a New Year’s resolution. We all start our migration into the gym, outside, or onto the home exercise machine we have stored conveniently under the bed for the last 12 months. We go on diets, buy magazines, subscribe to online trainers & watch the Biggest Loser. We have big goals & unbridled enthusiasm. We will reach our goals no matter what. We can’t fail!.... But, sadly, many of us will.

TOP 5 REASONS FOR FITNESS FAILURE UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS (WILL KILL YOUR MOTIVATION) Don’t get your expectations from TV or Facebook. The reality is far less exciting but far more achievable; The World Health Organisation states that healthy fat loss per week is 0.5kg, but that won’t sell many diets or Ab Crunchers. Stop watching the Biggest Loser.. it’s not reality TV. IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN YOU PLAN TO FAIL Plan your training. Plan your eating around your home life, your family, your work, and your training. Get good advice from a PT & Nutritionist to help you plan your training & eating. Start a diary & plan a week ahead. THE WRONG TRAINING Exercise programming can be complicated. Get the basics right. Don’t overdo it. Train to your strengths but work on your weaknesses. Do strength as well as cardio. Find balance in your program. Don’t overtrain.

SUGAR This stuff really is the devil. All the latest research shows us how bad this stuff is for your health, and for your waistline. Cut out all the sugar, obvious & hidden, from your diet permanently. Watch your health, energy levels and results skyrocket. SCALES Motivation is the most precious resource you have. Imagine if you had a friend that made you feel disappointed, fat and unmotivated every single day. You would ditch them, right? The scales are not your friend. They don’t know how hard you’ve worked or how much muscle or fluid you might have gained. Scales measure weight, not fat loss, or fitness, or health. The only time you fail at health & fitness is when you give up. Feed your motivation with positivity & you will always have the energy to keep going & make healthy choices. Have a plan to channel that motivation into & you have a recipe for success! Corey Whibley is a Personal Trainer & Owner of Airlie Fitness & Betterbody Nutrition.

Stepping up in 2016 DI STEVENS

St Catherines Catholic College is set for an exciting year with preparation beginning for the addition of a Kindergarten in 2017 and the school welcoming its first Year 11 cohort. We are also introducing Outside School Hours Care for the first time this year. Sharyn Bell, Co-principal of the Mercy and Loyola Campuses, which accommodate Prep to Year 6 students, has taken a year of leave from the school to pursue studies and has passed her role into the capable hands of long-time Assistant Principal, Di Stevens. Di has been at St Catherine’s for 35 years. Most recently, she has been the Assistant Principal – Religious Education for the junior campuses and has held several teaching and senior leadership roles during her long tenure. “I have seen some great changes over that time, and it has been exciting to watch the new educational initiatives and services come on line for local families,” Di said. “It is a real blessing to be a part of a school which is focused on the future of the region.” Di has seen an entire generation of families come through St Catherine’s and

she is proud of the school’s ability to provide familiarity and tradition to families over the years. “People love coming in and seeing faces they know and remembering the traditions of the school which we still maintain, in recognition of our years as part of the Whitsundays community,” Di said. Di was an active leader during one of the largest changes in the school’s history, with the construction of the new site for the middle and senior school four years ago. Her knowledge of the school and experience in managing new and changing services will come into play with the new Outside School Hours Care and planning for the new Kindergarten during the year. Together with Co-Principal David Burke, who has responsibility for Year 7 to 11 at the Mercy Campus, 2016 will bring a new phase of planning and growth. “It is an exciting time for our College, and we are looking forward to a year of academic and pastoral achievement and of being part of our local parish and the broader community through events and celebrations,” Di said.

18 million children and teenagers in Australia suffer from anxiety and the start of the school term comes with new emotional, social and educational challenges. Will they be in the same class as their friends this year? Will they be able to keep up with the other kids? Will they be accepted? Will they be cool? As a parent, you cannot be there to help them through their first day. However, there are some little ways you can help them prepare and make it easier for them. TEN tips for easing back to school anxiety 1. Just before the end of the summer holidays try and get them accustomed to routine again. If they are used to running around and doing whatever they want, returning to a structured environment will be even harder. 2. Let their room be messy. The first week of school can be scary. There are huge changes to get used to and challenges to meet. Having a quiet sanctuary to call their own is important. This is usually their bedroom and, if during their first week of school it gets a little messy, that’s ok. 3. Talk to them. Ask them how they are feeling about returning to school, what their needs and worries are, what their hopes and dreams are. Share memories of how nervous you were when you were a child. Teach them how it is normal to be nervous and assure them it will be ok. 4. Make sure they are comfortable and prepared for the start of term. Buy uniform that fits and that they feel good in. Make sure they have necessary stationary and items they enjoy eating in their lunch box. 5. Nurture their inner health. Make sure they have enough sleep, are active and exercise, eat well with not too much sugar in their diet and have at least 30 minutes of quiet alone time reading a book, colouring or watching T.V. each day. 6. Do not put any academic pressure on them. It is natural for parents to want their kids to achieve but this extra pressure at the start of term can make them feel even more nervous. 7. Invite one of their school friends around. This will give them a chance to talk about going back to school with someone their age who is going through the same thing. 8. Plan a fun ‘night before school dinner’ the evening before they go back. Let them choose the menu and get them involved in preparing the food. 9. The morning of their first day try not to rush or get too stressed. This can be hard if you have more than one child. However leaving the house flustered can cause extra anxiety for your kids. 10. Write a note and put it in their lunchbox. Write something funny, inspiring or sweet. It will make them smile and feel loved.

Preparatory Year!

Why it’s so vital for your child…

Choosing the right BACK pack! Little Sprouts Chiropractic hope all the little and big sprouts had a safe and enjoyable Christmas and a fabulous New Years. It’s now a new year which can bring big changes, especially if you put your health goals into action! The start of school is just around the corner, so now is a great time to start preparing. When choosing your child’s backpack, it is important to consider this: According to an international study, carrying a backpack is a frequent cause of discomfort for school children. School backpacks were felt to be heavy by 79.1% of children, to cause fatigue by 65.7%, and to cause back pain by 46.1% of children. (1) When purchasing a backpack, one thing to remember is choosing the right size with enough support. Even more importantly, which is easily forgotten, is to have the spine checked by a Chiropractor to make sure it is functioning optimally. Like your feet, if you were to have a fracture or strain in your foot that is the cause of the problem, the best shoe in the world would only help so much. It’s more important to make sure that your foot has properly healed and is properly functioning first in order to make good use of the shoe. The same goes for backpacks. It’s important to determine the cause of the problem. Being the start of the year, it’s best to have a healthy start, get the good momentum going and getting adjusted to prepare you and your little sprouts for the year to come. We now not only have Dr Petra and myself (Dr Anthony), but we would like to welcome Dr Clare onto the team, who will be joining us to look after all the little and big sprouts! Five to six year olds are natural learners. Life through their eyes is full of wonder and discovery. During these early formative years student’s brains are like sponges that soak up everything around them. If we get it right as educators at this early age, their thirst for learning will last a life time. The aim of the Preparatory Year is to set each individual student up for success and to establish lifelong skills and habits which lay a foundation for a child to grow into a responsible and innovative adult who will aspire to make a positive contribution to this world. The skills Preparatory students learn in their first year of school are immeasurable. They are like young eagles that are ready to leave the nest and soar into an amazing world full of opportunities. Preparatory students enter the classrooms with energy and enthusiasm which is refreshing and contagious. They want to write and read, they are excited to learn about numbers and letters and using their new acquired skills to become independent readers, authors and mathematicians. They love to learn about their amazing brain and how they are responsible for changing it every day when they enter the classroom. Even young students can learn strategies for priming their brains to learn more efficiently. Students feel a sense of pride and power when they set goals for themselves even at this young age and learn how to persevere through practice in the pursuit of learning something new every day. They learn the importance of managing their time during activities and how to self-regulate and control their impulses in various school situations. Success in the 21st century is influenced by a variety of character traits, skills and positive social and emotional wellbeing, which need to be taught, experienced and nurtured from a young age. At Whitsunday Anglican School we celebrate the uniqueness of every student as they enter the Preparatory Year to spread their wings and become self-motivated youngsters whose natural curiosity is encouraged and supported every step of the way.

WHATS THE MOST EXCITING THING ABOUT GOING BACK TO SCHOOL, AND WHY?

I get to catch up with my friends

I get to ride every week until next holidays

ELI

SAMARA

I am looking forward to going back to school because this will be my last year in primary school. I will be in grade six and a school leader.

The main reason why I’m excited to go back to school is because I get to see my friends after their holidays, get to do sport and most of all Sweet Acres riding lessons start up again. This means I get to ride every week until next holidays.

Going back to school means I get to catch up with my friends, go on camps and other trips but most of all it means that I get to come out to Sweet Acres every Wednesday for my riding lesson. The lessons are so much fun. Nikki is my favourite horse, we work well together. I like to tell my friends at school about the fun I have at “Sweet Acres”.

Sport is my favourite subject and being back at school means I get to do that twice a week. I’m also excited to be back at school with my friends, talking about horses all lunch and when we are going riding next.

catch up with fifriends and start my chosen electives

TORI I am looking forward to ‪2016 at St‬ Catherine’s to catch up with my friends and start my chosen elective subjects. I am also working with my horse Lilly on my dressage tests for the Queensland Interschool Championship in Brisbane in June. At this event we will represent St Catherine’s Equestrian Team and with Ness from Sweetacres Equestrian Team coaching me, I have my best chance to do well. I am also organising a fundraising event called “Whitsunday Equestrian Spectacular” ‪on April 17th‬ and all money raised will be going towards equipment for soon to be established “Whitsunday Riding for the Disabled”.

Sweet Acres Equestrian

Graceful, challenging and exhilarating.

Little can compare to the time spent on the back of a horse. For some, a ride is seeking solitude with a kindred spirit while for others the appeal is adventure and discovery. While horse riding may look simple enough, every rider will attest that there’s more to it than meets the eye. The challenge is part of the thrill, and at Sweet Acres Equestrian, Vanessa Torti and the team are dedicated to getting more people into the saddle. “Working with large equine animals is such a rewarding and challenging journey, as no two horses are the same. “They can teach us so much, is why it is advantageous to connect children with horses from a young age. Horses teach us self-awareness, self-control, patience, responsibility and they make us accountable for our own actions. There are few other sports that offer children such important life lessons while giving them so much fun. “Riding is such a thrill. Bounding with a 500kg horse is a feeling words cannot describe. Our students are taught horsemanship skills to handle and care for horses safely before riding begins. Connecting with the horse first is very important. “We have a very strong and successful Whitsunday equine

community and we encourage and coach our students who continue on to compete at state level or under Equestrian Australia in dressage, showjumping and eventing,” Vanessa said. Sweet Acres cater for people of all ages and abilities. Adult private and group lessons are available, as well as lessons for children from age 3 and up.
