We are dedicating this issue to all the hardworking men throughout the region, and acknowledging the inspirational role they play in the success off our business industries and more importantly the role of dad, husband, son, brother and mate, to their families and friends. Up until now, we have only had a handful of gents gracing the covers of Core Life, so we thought this would be the perfect issue to introduce the “boys” back into the lime light. Sorry ladies, we can’t have all the fun! This month’s cover features Mark McGrath from McKays Solicitors in Mackay. Check out his story on page 36, and find out how generations of the McGrath family have helped shape our region, and learn more about Mark’s personal ambition to make housing more affordable for future generations. Here is to a fresh start to the new financial year! We hope the next twelve months are full of happiness, good health and prosperity. Enjoy July

He was everywhere. He could fly, had x-ray vision and could not be stopped except for a bit of kryptonite.
I would have loved to have his gadgets, like a black car with rockets.
I still cry now haha
I think everyone’s favourite through the 80’s was the ‘Man of Steel’ himself. He was everywhere. He could fly, had x-ray vision and could not be stopped except for a bit of kryptonite. He was the ultimate superhero. He could even turn back time by reversing the spin of the world to save his love interest Lois Lane. I think every boy growing up idolised Superman and I was no different as who wouldn’t want to be indestructible Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Russell Spurrell. Ha ha Russell spurrell, Quest in mackay
TALK ON THE STREET
I always thought Batman was the coolest superhero (despite not coming from another planet). Darren Lockyer is my favourite Super Hero! I used to cry when the broncos lost, so Lockyer saved my day a lot. (I still cry now haha)
I would have loved to have his gadgets, like a black car with rockets. And I liked his choice in female adversaries, Cat woman.
Though growing up I thought I was Batman. I remember when I was about 6 years old, I had a mask and a bat belt which I wore everywhere, even to school and family photos.
Similar to Batman’s efforts to fight crime, as a lawyer I try to fight crime too, but without the lycra suit & gadgets. The pen is mightier!
At school my friend (Robin) and I would try and open a drain gate for our bat cave. To stop us doing that our teacher told us there were crocodiles down there. lol

do you have a dream? I was on holidays and my husband and I met a couple, Ken and Louise from the UK. We got talking and as usual the subject got around to what do you do? While everyone else was sharing I was trying to think about what would I say because I remembered a lady telling me she cleaned toilets and that killed the conversation dead because what could I say? Oh that’s interesting – not! Or you must enjoy that – not likely! I don’t like to say I’m an accountant because that’s only one step up from announcing you’re a grave digger for killing a conversation. Now I’m usually well known for thinking outside the box for my clients but doing it for myself is a bit harder but I finally had a Bing! Moment so I told them what I did. My husband looked at me askance and Louise said, “What do you mean”? I said, “Well you’re in business aren’t you, so how is it at the moment”? That brought up a discussion around the GFC and how hard it had been in the UK for business people and, with a bit more prompting from me, eventually it came out that they had had cash flow issues and in fact had almost cancelled their holiday because of it. They also had plans to retire
GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS
in five years but didn’t see how that could happen now. So I said “Well, what if I said I could help sort out your cash flow and help you retire, what would that mean to you”? They looked at each other for a moment and then Louise said, “Well that would be wonderful. It would mean everything. I could sleep at night”. “Well, that’s what I do” I replied. “I help my clients with their cash flow problems and I help them plan for their businesses in conjunction with what they want personally”. So what did I tell them I do?
I told them I sell dreams. Do you have a dream?
YOUR SUCCESS IS OUR BUSINESS At Synergy Professional Accounting Solutions we believe that working together with our clients achieves better results than the client doing their part and then us doing our part in isolation from each other. In fact that is what the word synergy means when more than one input combined with another achieves a better outcome than the single inputs alone. We believe we can make a real difference to business owners that will help them improve business performance and their lifestyle. We are not traditional accountants, we come to see you if that’s more convenient and we don’t charge for every phone call or fax in fact we don’t even keep time sheets. Each project we do is priced up front so you always know how much it will cost. We regularly keep in touch with our clients as well as introducing them to each other when we feel there may be a benefit and we pride ourselves on thinking of outside the box solutions for clients both small and large. This means that as well as providing the full range of standard accounting services, we also offer more customised services to meet our clients' individual needs. At Synergy we're more than accountants. We're like your in-house chief financial officer providing strategic advice and business planning that will add value to your company and help you to improve business competitiveness. We start by really getting to know your business so that our advice is accurate, personalised and relevant. This helps us mentor and support your business management and deliver far more than just a bottom line figure. After thoroughly analysing your business we deliver reports that outline strategic opportunities; provide objective, independent analysis on major purchases or leases; and provide business plans with realistic funding and pricing options. We can assist with bank relationships, cash flow management, off-site financial management and risk management, or provide exit strategies if required. Synergy – working together – achieving results

TO BE HAPPY ...don’t lie! Psychologists agree that a condition of good mental health and contentment is that you be who you say you are. The moment you start lying, you begin to have something to hide and all sorts of mental weaknesses begin to develop from this inconsistency. Lying not only weakens your character but, surprisingly, often it’s ineffective as a tactic, simply because lies often get caught out, thereby considerably damaging the reputation of the liar. Be one of the minority who always tells the truth. Not only will you feel better about yourself, but people will feel better about you. When everyone knows a person always tells the truth, what they do say has great power and weight.

are you top of mind
with your clients?
What do you do when your business slows down? Tighten your belt, watch your cash flow and hope it doesn’t last long? Businesses need to be savvier than ever, however unfortunately it is in these quieter periods that marketing usually gets seen as complimentary business expense. Nothing could be further from the truth! In quieter periods of business, you must stay top of mind with your clients. Whilst marketing shouldn’t be exempt from a budget review, there are plenty of things businesses can do which will see owners getting great results for a minimum spend. Look at your client base. What is the cost of acquiring a new customer, versus the cost of keeping one? You will find that by touching base with your existing clients, who already know, like and trust you that that the relationship will be reinforced. You may also find that you can provide a solution to a problem they hadn’t even recognised yet. Do you have a database? Reach out to your established customers via email. By using online email clients such as Mailchimp, which has a free option, you can check who is opening your email. Mr King has opened your email about a new car 14 times? Maybe he is thinking of buying! Get on the phone to him – you have the time!
will feel like he is valued by your business, and if there was unfortunately an issue that drove him away, you can address and rectify this. What about new clients? Consider offering prospective clients value, such as ‘The top 5 things to consider before (insert your service or product here!)”. Create and brand a PDF and upload it on your website behind a landing page that requires an email address to gain access. Potential customers will see this as value before they have even approached your business. Before they realise it, they will begin to trust your business because you are offering them advice without obligation, and you are growing your potential client base. Small business must be dynamic in all marketing activities to get the biggest return on investment at all times, especially in leaner periods. Market smarter, don’t cease all activity. That is the quickest way to be forgotten to both new and existing clients. Want to know more about marketing? Call Tolita at 8 Seconds, on 048817728 or check out www.8seconds.com.au.
Consider whom you haven’t seen in store in a while. Maybe they are busy, or maybe they had a poor experience with your business that could be easily corrected by a 5-minute phone call. It is a win-win, your customer

our exciting news? Hello from Mackay Airport! Have you heard our exciting news? Preparations are now underway for a 152 room hotel at Mackay Airport. The $30M hotel and surrounds is the first of several major construction projects planned for Mackay Airport over the next 20 years, through our $900M vision to develop Mackay Airport as Central Queensland’s multimodal integrated hub and open up new economic opportunities for our region. On completion next year, the hotel will offer a convenient option for FIFO passengers, business people and residents from outlying areas in our region, whether you are travelling for workdays or holidays. Speaking of holidays, we’ve just launched our new Jetstar Mackay – Gold Coast service so now it’s even easier to get to this popular holiday destination. Make sure you’re on Jetstar’s email list for special offer fares. This flight’s also a convenient choice for FIFO passengers commuting between the two cities. Mackay Airport is proud to support this month’s Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition (QME). An event which brings the mining sector together to do serious business while injecting millions into our regional economy. Congratulations to all our State of Origin competition winners. Watch out for our next in-terminal promotion. It could be your turn to win!

getting into the industry When you’re behind the wheel of a CAT 797F or pulling the levers of a Bucyrus dragline, you have the power to move mountains, but getting in those seats to begin with can be a long process. The mining industry can be a difficult industry to crack when you don’t have any connections. The key to getting your foot in the door, is having the right skills for the right job. Thorough research on vacancies, types of entry-level positions and qualifications necessary to gain employment are all important considerations. Firstly you need to consider what it is you want to do. Do you want to work underground or in open cut? Where possible, arrange to go on a tour of a working mine, to view the different positions available. Once you have established what you want to do, set about ensuring you have the right qualifications to perform the task. If your interest is in the operation of heavy machinery, then first look at gaining experience with a civil construction organisation to get your heavyrigid license, or front-end loader training. A Plant Operators Ticket can give you training in a range of heavy machinery, from front end loaders and back hoes, to bobcats and excavators. Positions such as diesel fitters or auto electricians require specialist trade qualifications, so you will need to study in this particular field first, and then gain specialist training for mine-specific experience before applying.
16 www.corelife.com.au
Before applying for a position, check with an employment agency or human resources professional to find out what attributes will tick all of the boxes. It may be as simple as sitting a first aid course to give you everything you need to become a sought-after applicant. To differentiate yourself, you need to have all of the skills that are going to be beneficial to a mining company, to give your application a chance. Even then it can still be a process, as you need to convince your prospective employer why they should hire you over someone who already has the culture and experience within the industry. As well as having the trade qualifications specific to the individual position, you will also need to be able to pass a drug and alcohol test. If you have issues with drug and alcohol addiction, the first step is to visit your GP who can refer you to assistance to help you break the habit. You will also be required to have a good level of fitness, and will possibly need to pass a physical examination from your GP. Persistence is the key, so if you face an initial rejection, don’t let it get you down. Where possible, find out why your application was rejected and work on improvements if possible. Keep an eye out on a number of employment websites so that you don’t miss any opportunities, and register with an employment agency who has a strong connection with mining-related positions. Keep informed about what is happening nationwide within the industry by subscribing to online mining-related magazines and websites, and watch the evening news. Often having a connection already established within the industry can be beneficial, so do your best to network and form connections with people who can help. Be careful to ensure that all training assessments are carried out by a registered company, are recognised nationally and comply with the Australian Qualifications Framework. Luckily for our Bowen Basin miners, Dysart-based QMRS has a reputation for supplying the best mines rescue training in the world
“
Minding our Miners It’s 5:30pm, and while the majority of us are heading home for dinner, the long shift of a miner is just beginning. They will put on an array of safety equipment and strap on enough emergency air to reach the surface if there was ever a need. They head deep below the earth’s surface, and will work through the night, in conditions only appreciated by the underground miner. In addition to potential threats, miners face many challenges they cannot see, including carbon monoxide and methane gas. The build-up of mine gasses is not only harmful to breathe, but can also trigger a destructive explosion. Mines will design systems and procedures, as well as safety systems, to manage an array of controls that make the mine a safe place to work. It’s a challenging trade with risk around every corner, which is why it’s imperative to have a controlled, managed safety system, and people on-site who know instinctively the process in the case of emergency. Tasked with providing emergency training to the underground mining industry, is the Queensland Mines Rescue Service. QMRS is tasked with training a contingent of underground miners with emergency response training, team building, and 20 www.corelife.com.au
the use of specialist equipment, if something was to go wrong. QMRS assists the coal mining industry with emergency management advice, emergency system audits and exercises, and provides a leading edge emergency response capability to the coal industry during any emergency event. Legislation dictates that a minimum of five per cent of an underground workforce must be trained to rescue standard, so QMRS recruit volunteers from within the underground mines. The training is physically and psychologically demanding, and includes wearing self-contained breathing apparatus, fire fighting, physical rescues and learning about strata conditions, emergency equipment and team building. Luckily for our Bowen Basin miners, Dysart-based QMRS has a reputation for supplying the best mines rescue training in the world, with realistic training scenarios and highly experienced trainers. In 1994, the Moura No. 2 Mine in the southern Bowen Basin suffered an underground explosion which fatally injured 11 men. Members of QMRS were sent underground to assist in the recovery of those men, a daunting task indeed. This event highlighted the importance of strengthening risk management systems and knowledge, to keep personnel safe from the hazards and threats that face them on a daily basis.
QMRS is a not-for-profit organisation, and relies on an industry levy for funding. It has recently expanded its capacity from two training rooms to five, to include state of the art training facilities to simulate real-life emergency situations that would be encountered underground. For 105 years, QMRS has been the primary organisation tasked with underground mine emergency safety, but this year the organisation is branching out to provide training to the open cut mines. The four week course covers hazards typically associated with open cut mines, from events associated with large vehicles and heavy machinery, to road accidents and fire fighting. The team’s big hearts extend even further than the Bowen Basin. Last May, three of Dysart’s operations managers took on the Midi-Smiddy challenge, an annual bicycle race to raise funds for cancer research. Smiling for Smiddy honours the memory of Adam Smiddy, who passed away to an aggressive cancer in 2006 aged just 26. The local crew raised more than $11,500 for the cause, and then cycled 590km over three days in southern Queensland.
Big hearts for a big cause, and big hearts to mind our miners.
The coming together of a group of people with a common purpose. So why is it, that the utterance of the very word, can cause such division amongst a community who otherwise have the same purpose in life? We all want a secure future for our family, and as CFMEU District President, Stephen Smyth explains, that is what a union represents. “As the mining division of CFMEU, we cover industry associated with coal mines, power stations and coal ports. We’ve been a part of Australia for 106 years, and deal with some of the largest multi-national countries in the world. “Our most important function is to ensure that Australians are being treated fairly in all aspects of the workplace. We represent our members, to continue to maintain and improve their conditions and standards of living,” Stephen said. A strong union and workforce can be in the interest of every Australian, not only union members. The higher wages and better living conditions that unions fight for assist an economic recovery. When those in our community have a more affluent lifestyle, the entire community benefits.
“I take the view that all there is between earning a living wage and poverty is a union. We make no apologies for what we have been able to achieve with conditions and entitlements in the industries we represent, including the communities we represent. “Our dues are tax deductible, so for a very reasonable fee, members receive a host of benefits as well as the peace of mind of knowing we will back them up if they are being treated unfairly. In turn we give a lot back to the community too, including sponsorship of the CQ Rescue Helicopter,” Stephen said. Much of the negativity toward unions have perpetuated from rumour and misconception, so it pays to be fully informed before making any decision that can affect your future. Stephen commented, “I welcome anyone who would like to discuss or debate the role of a union within our community. This would be a preferred method to those who prefer to hide behind an alias on social media.” Our resources, our jobs, our future. As a community, we can be stronger, together.

Preparing for prosperity Evo Business Centre, paget
Do you wish you worked here? Your employees probably wish they do too. And why wouldn’t they? A modern, new workplace can be all it takes to instill pride and passion back into your team, increasing productivity and ultimately, profitability.
A new financial year, a new workplace, and new possibilities for business. Sounds expensive right?
Not necessarily. Your new business home could be cheaper than your current lease, but with a host of exciting benefits. Stage one of the Evo Business Centre is open and ready to launch your company to great new heights. The revolutionary new business centre is located in the heart of the new Paget, with five state-of-the-art premises, ready for occupancy. The size ranges from 500 square metres through to 900 square metres, to cater for a range of industry, from retail and manufacturing to engineering, mechanical and transportation.
If you have a need for both office space and warehouse space, these business units are what you have been waiting for.
Each premises has two roller doors, one at the front and one at the rear, which are an impressive six metres high, and six and a half metres wide.
24 www.corelife.com.au
Clinton Arentz, Director, Winston Group
The surrounding roads are eight metres wide, meaning there is plenty of room for large truck and trailer units to enter and depart your business with ease. The ability to quickly load and unload trucks is a key to increasing productivity, which is why the warehouse ceilings are eight metres tall, high enough to safely unload containers under cover. The addition of a crane in your warehouse is an additional feature available, for increased workplace safety, as well as increased efficiency and reduced costs in crane hire. A high proportion of car parking spaces have been constructed, for ease of close parking for customers and employees. Less than two minutes from the new shopping precinct at Ooralea, and only one intersection from the Bruce Highway, ease of access and parking will encourage your customers to choose your business over the competition.
Is it too big, too small or too old for your current needs? Is your branding prominent and can customers easily find a car park? Are you operating from more than one site, costing you more money than you need to spend? Now is the time to consolidate your future plans, and prepare for the inevitable growth period which will visit Mackay again. With the potential to save money on your current lease, there’s no better time to analyse the location of your business. There’s nothing to lose, and everything to gain. Evo Business Centre is a Winston Group development, the same team that delivered the innovative and popular Terminus Business Park in Paget.
Every warehouse comes complete with luxurious and spacious showroom opportunities, as well as a mezzanine floor to host modern office facilities. Each business unit has frontage on Maggiolo Drive, with large signage opportunities, for maximum brand awareness and a professional corporate image.
Winston Group has based itself in Mackay, and is passionate about the continued growth of the region’s local economy.
Additional zoning has been granted to allow your business to operate 24 hours per day, seven days per week, to ensure maximum productivity opportunities. Fibre optic cable has been connected to Evo Business Centre, so tenants will have lightning-fast broadband simply by plugging into the wall.
The local development company is in Mackay to stay, and Clinton himself will be available at Evo Business Centre from Monday to Friday, to show prospective tenants the features of the business development.
A brand new financial year presents an opportunity to take an outsiders look at the productivity of your business premises.
Director, Clinton Arentz, strongly believes in the future of Mackay, and knows that Paget will be a hive of activity when the industry sectors restrengthen.
If there was the potential to increase your productivity, increase employee morale, strengthen your corporate image and attract more customers, wouldn’t you take the time to find out how? It could be as simple as dropping into Evo Business Centre for a look. www.corelife.com.au 25

SHIFT WORK is something that alters your lifestyle and your health dramatically, but for many of us it is a necessary evil we need to manage. I deal with many members of our centre that present with the challenge of balancing 12 hour shifts on site both day and night, with training, eating and sleeping while they are away.
Here are some facts on shift work:
Shift work affects your body’s natural “clock” called your Circadian Rhythm, making it unstable as you attempt to adjust to a different shift or back to normality. Shift workers get on average 2 to 3 hours per day LESS sleep than the rest of us, and this sleep is often of poor quality or interrupted.
Shift workers have:
An increased likelihood of obesity Increased risk of cardiovascular disease Increased incidence of mood or issues with depression Greater incidences of gastrointestinal issues Higher rate of accidents both at work and on the road Higher rates of cancer Problems regulating blood sugar leading to diabetes and obesity There are more, but Ill spare you the doom and gloom. The fact is that exercise is EVEN MORE IMPORTANT FOR A SHIFT WORKER than for the rest of us. When we examine the list of potential ailments, STRENGTH TRAINING is the most effective path to tackling many of those nasties, but any exercise at all is better than none.
something that should come second to sleep. Many workers get caught on a stimulant cycle taking pre workouts to train and further affecting the quality of their sleep. I’ve met many shift workers that have found the balance with training and work, and some manage excellent health and results. If we use a “4 on 4 off” roster as an example, here are some tips and things to consider when planning your workout regime:
Sleep is more important than exercise - if you have to choose, get some sleep.
Stay away from empty liquid calories to re energise, and avoid excessive stimulants after a shift to get you to the gym - they will only affect the quality of the sleep you get. It can take up to 7 days to recover from big workouts, so try a doing 4 days of serious strength training on the gym ONLY on your 4 days off, and concentrate on allowing your body to rest, recover, and adjust while you are on your 4 days away. If you have a sit down job, stay active post shift with stretching and walking, or body weight exercises like planks, push ups, crunches, and wall squats, but don’t worry about the big gym sessions - you will make up for that when you get home. Results and improved health will come from finding the balance that works for you and your roster. Be smart about your choices, and remember if you cant recover from your shifts, you can recover from your training. Corey - Airlie Fitness
You need to be realistic with exercise when working 4 or 5 days away on 12 hour rosters. The fact is that sleep time is precious and training is

A better way to wake up POTTERS MOTEL Waking up to the sound of waves gently lulling against the shore is one of the most serene ways to greet the new day.
“There are a host of features which make this motel buzz. Every room has a king-sized bed, and the design feels modern and fresh. In the future we will provide bicycles for our guests to use to explore the Bluewater Trail which passes the motel.
At Mackay’s newest motel, Potters Oceanside, guests are tucked away in the quiet location of East Gordon Street, only a few minute’s stroll from the golden sand of Town Beach.
“We have worked together in business all our married life, and we work well as a team. Not all couples can work together, but we complement each other’s strengths. We know the motel intimately and are looking forward to our first guests arriving this month,” Madeline said.
Managers Peter and Madeline Stronge relocated from Peregian Beach on the Sunshine Coast, to manage the motel for longtime friend, John Potter. “I went to University with John in Gatton, so when he approached us to see if we were interested in managing his motel in Mackay, we knew it was the next adventure we had been waiting for,” Peter said. The couples has been involved with the planning and execution of the pre-opening of Potters Oceanside Motel, and have enjoyed watching the finer details come together to make an exciting accommodation option for Mackay.
Peter and Madeline are mad-keen rugby union fans, and enjoy supporting the Reds and the Wallabies. They have travelled to many corners of the globe, including a recent road-trip around rural France, beginning in northern Lille, heading south through Bordeaux and east to Lyon, before returning north through the champagne region back to Lille. Give your visiting friends and family the gift of a great night’s sleep, at Potter’s Oceanside Motel.

River City Motor Group, Powerhouse Ford and Mackay Land Rover have been operating under the River City Group brand since January 2013, and now come together under one brand, Goodalls Motor Group. The man behind the name, is Arthur Goodall. Arthur’s interest in the motor industry started when he was a teenager, going to school in Darwin. His best friend’s father owned a car dealership, where Arthur worked in administration and accounts during school holidays. After finishing High School, Arthur thought he might want to be an accountant, but after 18 months working as a trainee accountant, he realised he didn’t want to be tied to a desk. He accepted a role with a car dealership as a trainee salesperson, which was later purchased by his best friend’s father. Arthur’s role changed to oversee the implementation of a computer system to run the dealership. Arthur’s role transitioned into working for an IT company that specialised in provided complete computer systems to car dealerships. His girlfriend at the time, Peggy, had been offered a position in China, so when the call came to Arthur asking if he would move to Thailand to become the General Manager for a group of Mazda dealerships in Bangkok, the decision was a no-brainer. “The role was vastly different to what I expected, in terms of the cultural influences that I can honestly say I did not possess a clue about. This could be something as simple as not understanding why the customer could not tell us what colour car he wanted, because he needed to visit his monk to find out what his “lucky” colour was,” Arthur said. Arthur and Peggy married after returning to Australia, and now have two beautiful sons, who are as much a part of the business as anyone else. Owning a dealership had always been the dream for Arthur, who jumped at the chance to purchase River City Motor Group in 2010. Arthur commented, “I was immediately drawn to the outdoor lifestyle and the opportunity to live by the beach. In late 2012 the opportunity to grow RCMG presented itself, and we entered an agreement to acquire PowerHouse Ford and Mackay Land Rover. “Since then, we have been striving to bring these businesses together. The re-brand of these businesses to Goodalls Motor Group, is to let people know who we are. We are not a faceless organisation, we are a local business, run by local people, here to service the local community.” The unity of businesses into Goodalls represents the desire to provide the best rage and the best service. A one-stop motoring shop, to keep you rolling.

To put your own name to your business, is to have faith in the products and services you are selling.
His passion runs deep through his core. You could almost believe that oil pulsed through his veins instead of blood. His father was a mechanic, as is one of his sons, so Ian is dedicating his efforts toward ensuring that the next generation of mechanics and diesel fitters are competent and confident on the work site. Ian’s passion for training evolved from seeing young apprentices struggle when they entered the workforce. His eyes were opened to the lack of workplace competence after his own son lacked basic practical skills while completing his mechanical apprenticeship.
Ian Harrison QUality training group
“I owned an automotive mechanical business in Victoria and, after my son had completed his apprenticeship, I asked him to give me a hand in the workshop. I was shocked when he told me they hadn’t covered a lot of essentials in his training. He was horribly under prepared to enter the workforce as a mechanic, despite passing his training,” Ian said. Ian’s mechanical aptitude took him all over Australia for work and he has spent the past eight years working throughout Bowen Basin mines. His past 15 months has been working in Coppabella on a seven-on, seven-off roster. He has witnessed new mechanics and diesel fitters struggle on site due to outdated teaching principles or not having prior experience on the machinery they are required to work on at the mine. While working full time, Ian has developed Quality Training Group, an industry-focused training organisation dedicated to providing trained and competent apprentices and tradespeople.
Ian’s vision has received RTO registration to comply with government regulations and focuses on machine-specific training, whether that’s automotive, agriculture, forestry, marine or mining. “We put the quality back into training, to produce highquality graduates,” Ian said. Although his training venture has taken a large amount of dedication, Ian still finds time to work on his beloved 1928 Chevrolet hot rod. A vehicle that will not only look amazing, but will be road worthy, once fully restored. Like his Chev, Ian’s business is more than a job, it’s a passion for quality.

QUEST in mackay
Stepping out of your comfort zone is unavoidable if you crave success. All great business begins with an initial leap of faith, and sometimes you just need to close your eyes and jump. In 2009, Russell Spurrell took that leap, and has never looked back. He and wife Elise were living in Melbourne. Their first child had only just turned one, and they had a second on the way. Knowing very little about Mackay other than what his feasibility analysis had shown him, Russell convinced Elise to move their family 3,000km across Australia, to open Mackay’s first Quest property. With no support network, friends or family to welcome them to their new home, the couple were apprehensive about what the future would hold, but five years on, they are proof that risk in business can certainly pay off. In 2013, in partnership with Mackay locals Rob and Corinna Cotter, Russell and Elise opened their second Mackay Quest property, the distinguished Quest Mackay on Gordon. “Looking back at it now I often think, ‘how did I convince my wife to do that’, however it has provided a wonderful lifestyle for us and our two beautiful children. “Everyone has an opportunity to follow their dreams, but it does not just ‘happen’, you have to work hard and do it with passion,” Russell said. Growing up in Victoria, Russell loved our national sport, AFL, and began 34 www.corelife.com.au
playing when he was 10 years old. He played Division One in the Eastern Footy League, the best league under the reserve AFL league in Victoria. After moving to Mackay he continued his AFL passion by playing for the Mackay City Hawks. He retired in 2012 after winning back-to-back flags, and is still on the Board of Directors of AFL Mackay. Russell knows that the success of his businesses relies on the support of the local community, which is why he is passionate about supporting Mackay. He volunteers time to the Mackay Tourism board and the Mackay Tourism Events Advisory Group. The management team of both Quest Mackay and Quest Mackay on Gordon are heavily involved in supporting the community, to thank the region for its overwhelming support. They are proud supporters of CQ Rescue, North Queensland and Mackay Eisteddfod, Mackay Basketball, Mackay AFL and Eastern Swans Football Club, just to name a few. The businesses also get behind a range of tourism and charity events, Remy’s Raiser, The Mayors Charity Ball, Run for MI life, Give me 5 for kids, Mackay Harbour Beach Races and River Sessions are only a handful to be mentioned. When a phenomenal opportunity knocks on your door, don’t be scared to open. It may be the quest you have been waiting for.
Andrew Zammit’s life changed when his third child, Layla, was rushed to Townsville’s Neo-Natal ICU soon after birth. This was the scariest time of his life. Although Andrew already valued his family time, this highlighted just how important it is to make the most of his time with his wife and kids.

“I believe in the old saying that you should work to live, not live to work. Although I am passionate about my work, I am equally passionate about spending quality time with my amazing and supportive wife Angela, and our three beautiful kids.” Andrew said. Family is everything to Andrew. He is a fourth generation Mackay local on both sides of his family. His great grandparents were cane farming pioneers. Another owned a dairy farm in North Mackay, while yet another built the famous round house at Cremorne that later became the location of the shoot-out between bikie gangs. Andrew grew up in Blacks Beach, with aunties and uncles, cousins and grandparents only a few houses away and spent much of his childhood on the beach or fishing, something he is now enjoying with his own kids. He met and dated Angela, (also a fourth generation local), at school, and six years after graduating they were married. The couple’s three children keep Andrew grounded with a zest for life. When he went to university, Andrew was unsure of what path to take but decided to do a business degree. At that stage he didn’t know a debit from a credit. It all just clicked and Andrew had found something he both enjoyed and excelled at. He obtained a degree in business majoring in accounting, graduating with distinction. He returned to Mackay and spent the next 16 years believing he was saving the world one tax return at a time. It wasn’t until he joined the Proactive Accounting Network in 2011 that his entire outlook changed from being a traditional accountant to a proactive accountant. It is this approach that is the basis of his business Proactive Accounting Solutions. “I love being in a position to make a real difference in people’s lives, not just crunch numbers, but offer solutions that help people both financially and personally by creating better results and a better lifestyle.” “I am more like a business partner than just an accountant, always there to support my clients in any way they need,” Andrew said. His giving personality extends beyond the doors of his business. He is passionate about Mackay, and is a member of the Business Network International, and the Sunrise Rotary Club of Mackay.

It’s not until the life of a child hangs in the balance, we realise how delicate life truly is.
Turn your surplus into purpose. It’s a motto which works as well in business, as it does in everyday life. For Simon Ross, turning surplus into purpose is the core of his business, Minespec Parts. “There are many unused parts being held in inventory in Australia. Our aim is to work with your commercial, maintenance, warehouse and audit teams to deliver new opportunities to turn your surplus parts into additional revenue through a Global audience,” Simon said. Three fundamental parts of Minespec Parts is the dismantling of mining and civil machinery for parts supply and demand, supplying mining and civil undercarriage, and freight and logistics through a unique relationship with Deesons Heavy Lift. Minespec Parts are located on the same block of land as Deeson’s, allowing Simon to ensure that his customer’s freight arrives on time and in safe condition. The relationship with Deeson’s is a significant part in making Minespec Parts a one-stop shop. The business is celebrating its first year, and as managing director, Simon makes sure that service is a top priority. “There is only one boss & that’s the customer. He or She can fire everyone in the company from the top down, simply by spending their money somewhere else.” I keep that saying in the forefront of my mind on a daily basis. Repeat business is what we strive for, and we can only hope to achieve this by providing the best. Without this, no business survives,” Simon said. Simon was born in the small town of Chinchilla in the Darling Downs, but as the mining town of Middlemount was being established in the early 1980’s, it provided the opportunity for his parents to fulfil their dream of owning a newsagency. The family moved to Mackay in 1999. Simon’s sporting passions were in rugby union and cricket, but give him a bomber and he was a crack-shot. We’re talking marbles! Cats-eyes, keepsies and bombsies. It’s a generational past-time that many of us can relate to. These days it’s his lovely wife Leah and his two children, Maddison aged four, and Cooper aged two, who get his full attention. His week is kept hectic with the running of the business, so he makes the most of weekends to catch up. “Riding bikes, looking for worms and trying to catch butterflies, all special times with my children I look forward to every weekend. My kids are my special little tigers, and Leah is so amazingly supportive, she manages all three of us,” Simon said. Rumour has it he performs a pretty spectacular rendition of Redgums “I was only 19” when a good night is underway.

It’s his surplus time on the weekends, he turns into purposeful time with his family. That’s what life is all about.
This is a mantra that Mark Beale lives his life by. Not one to sit on the sidelines and watch life pass him by, he grabs every opportunity with both hands and enjoys the ride.

“You are always better to regret something you have done rather than regret something you haven’t.”
Mark grew up in a small town in Nowra in New South Wales, and is still a passionate Blues supporter. He did an apprenticeship as a carpenter with his dad, before entering the hospitality industry. He began his career as a pizza delivery driver, and quickly worked his way up into management. His career took him to Sydney, and then a holiday to Hamilton Island introduced him the beauty of the Whitsundays. After managing some of Hamilton Island’s best hospitality destinations, Mark developed a passion for Real Estate, and began his career in sales. Mark commented, “I owe a lot to my old boss Christie Leet at PRD for teaching me a lot of what I know today about real estate.” In early 2006, he and wife Belinda were approached by the Ray White team to own the local franchise. “We purchased the business with an 8% market share and these days have between a 40% and 50% market share in most suburbs in the area.” These pivotal decisions in Mark’s life are what he refers to as ‘Sliding Door’ moments, when a time comes in your life that you need to make a decision one way or another and which decision you make changes the rest of your life.
Mark Beale
“I do often wonder what my life would be like if I didn’t go to Hamilton Island. I know for sure that my life right now is wonderful and I am very lucky to be surrounded by loving friends and family,” Mark said. “One of the most pleasurable things for me is to see our staff grow and succeed. I love the point where the light bulb turns on and the person changes forever. We love our staff dearly and would do anything for them.”

Kane Nusteling PGA Golf Pro
The golf swing is arguably one of the most difficult athletic movements to perfect. Hints on how to improve your swing are like receiving tips for the stock market, if they aren’t coming from a seasoned professional, then they are more than likely worthless. Luckily for our region’s golfing enthusiasts, help is at hand at Proserpine Golf Club, from AAA-rated PGA member, Kane Nusteling. Kane grew up in Geelong in Victoria, and played a variety of sports, though golf was always his big passion. By age 15 he had already achieved a scratch handicap, a feat many seasoned golfers may never achieve. He began his career with the world-renowned Anglesea Golf Club on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, before backpacking through Europe. When arriving in Scotland, Kane visited the spiritual home of golf, St Andrews. He was fortunate to play a game on the “Old Course” with club members, who offered him a job at the completion of the round. He stayed in Scotland and met his wife, Marjorie. The couple travelled back to Kane’s home town in Victoria where he coached Victorian Junior Squads, before returning to Scotland again for 12 months, to introduce their daughter, Taylor, to her Scottish grandparents. It was from Scotland that Kane applied for the position with the Proserpine Golf Club, and took the risk to fly back to Australia for the interview. Since his appointment two years ago, the club has experienced enormous growth, including an increase in membership of close to 60 per cent. Deceptively simple yet endlessly complicated, master the game by enhancing your swing. Your handicap will thank you for it. www.corelife.com.au 37 www.corelife.com.au 37

McKays Solicitors mackay
“That which is not just, is not law.” By national and international standards, the cost of land and housing in Central Queensland is of great concern, mostly caused by an influx of taxing regimes from all three levels of our government. As the lawyer for many prominent developers, Mark McGrath is determined to reduce the amount of red and green tape within the construction and development industry, to make housing more affordable for future generations. Mark has been a principal at McKays Solicitors since 2002, and heads the commercial property branch of the practice. Part of this position involves negotiating with government agencies for property development clients, to reduce bureaucratic hold-ups. Mark comes from a long line of McGrath’s in Mackay. His great, great, great grandfather came to Australia from Ireland in the 1860’s, arriving in the Capricornia district, and later settling in Mackay. His family have a strong heritage in the cane and cattle industries, and later in hotels and property development. Mark was born not long after Cyclone Ada devastated the Whitsundays in 1970, and grew up in Cannonvale. His first name is William, but because his grandfather and father are also William McGrath, he is known by his second name. His son, Will, is the sixth-in-line William McGrath to have lived in Mackay, which is why Mark is passionate about creating an even better future in Mackay for his son, and two daughters, Lila and Emily, to grow up in. Mark’s mother, Ann, operated a boarding kennel for many years in Cannonvalley, which gave him a fond love of animals. His father, Bill, worked in real estate and property development in Airlie Beach, and was a Councillor on the Proserpine Shire Council for 18 years. As Mark saw the Whitsunday’s change rapidly in the 1980’s, his passion for property, development matters and politics grew from watching his father within the industry. Mark had a love of farming and being outdoors, and had contemplated becoming a landscape architect. This was even before Jamie Durie swapped from being a male dancer to a landscape gardener and made the profession trendy. But with a high TE score, Mark’s father suggested he would be suited to law. With the assistance of his parents, Mark had a gap-year in Maryland in the USA, a year he describes as being one of the best in his life. When he returned to Australia, Mark began his legal studies at QUT, and law became an all-consuming passion. “I love the problem solving aspects of law, preferably advising clients how to avoid problems and risks. There is always a legal answer and a practical answer to any question or problem, and I always try to listen to my clients as to how they then want to proceed,” Mark said. He proposed to his wife, Ruth (also a lawyer), on bended-knee on Hayman Island, and a few years later they were married on Daydream Island. The local island paradises are favourite holiday locations, with Mark and Ruth escaping to Hayman once a year for a no-kids weekend, and then the entire family holidaying on Daydream for a yearly family adventure. Keeping his connection to the land, the family have a small farm near Eungella, with no television and no phones. They aim to spend time there each month to canoe in the river, ride motor bikes and sit around a campfire and listen to the Cowboys on ABC radio, accompanied by a few glasses of red. In 2010, Mark was made a Notary Public by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Harking from the ancient Roman Empire, Notary Publics were the makers and keepers of legal records for the community. Their role in modern society is to witness and certify international documents. “I am always amazed by how diverse our local community is. For example just last week, I witnessed conveyancing documents for people from Iran and Congo and migration documents from Malaysia and Chile,” Mark said. Investment in technology has always been an important feature for McKays Solicitors, to improve efficiency and speed. With four offices located in Mackay, Brisbane, Surat Basin and Gold Coast, including more than 130 team members, technology is more crucial than ever in maintaining effective communication with staff and clients. “We have a unique focus on various specialist areas of legal practice. We encourage all of our lawyers to each become specialists in areas of law that they are passionate about, and over time, to grow a team around them.” “We have grown into one of the largest regional law practices in Queensland, and our business plan reflects our desire to continue to expand our regional profile, yet maintain the very personal touch we deliver our clients,” Mark said. With a strong profile in the Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday region, McKays Solicitors have a dedicated mining team, with industry-specific knowledge and experience relating to mining including industrial relations and work health and safety law. The team consists of experienced lawyers, Suzanne Brown, Dannielle Sanderson, Stephen Silvapulle and Mark. Mark commented, “We have confidence in the resilience of the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regional economies around mining services, as well as tourism, construction and agriculture sectors. We are here, to help build a stronger tomorrow.”

WorkPac valerie, julian, sarah
Life is all about taking risks but, when it comes to industry there’s no place for it on the worksite. WorkPac is Australia’s leading provider of human capital solutions to a wide range of industry; including mining, construction and engineering. Its business is to optimise productivity and mitigate risk in your business, by providing the right people to do the job. Business Centre Manager, Julian Genn, was first associated with WorkPac when they placed him into a position with Komatsu. He then joined the WorkPac team in Brisbane, before moving to Mackay three years ago and is nearing 10 years with the company. For his dedication to both WorkPac and his team, Julian was awarded the Mackay Professional Manager of the Year award at the Australian Institute of Management Excellence awards held at the MECC last year. With a hunger for self-improvement and a belief that it’s never too late to learn, he is also in his second year of a law degree with CQU. After a 25 year career playing AFL, Julian retired after playing in a premiership with the Mackay City Hawks in 2011. Administration Manager, Sarah Robinson, joined the WorkPac team 15 months ago after moving to Mackay from the Sunshine Coast with her fiancé. She had lived on the Sunshine Coast for seven years, after growing up originally in our state’s capital, Brisbane. She studied classical ballet and danced for 25 years, but now her 40 www.corelife.com.au
passions stem from the tropical area that surrounds her, with a love for fishing and water recreation. She lives on a sugar cane farm, an idyllic rural setting for her wedding planned for August this year. Sarah is also a fan of Formula 1, a sport that has captivated her since she was young. Valerie Lesaulnier is WorkPac Mackay’s recruitment Team Leader, ensuring that quality applicants are given great employment opportunities. Growing up in Tamworth and then Grafton, Valerie was a talented athlete, playing touch rugby and participating in athletics before a ruptured AC ligament put a stop to her sporting future. She moved to Brisbane and then Mackay, but the blue blood of NSW still runs through her veins. Her toughest time was during her pregnancy, when Valerie’s mother was battling breast cancer. Her mum passed away the day after her daughter was born, which has given Valerie the strength to appreciate and value family, as it can be taken away in the blink of an eye. WorkPac’s smarter recruitment options speak for themselves. It’s a smart team of people, who can deliver smarter results to your business.

Imagine going to work each morning, and thinking to yourself, “What an office, what a lifestyle, it doesn’t get much better than this!” For Alan Robinson, this is his reality, a fitting closing chapter to an exciting career that most could only dream of. Alan was born in a small town in the centre of New Zealand’s North Island, before his father decided to move the family to Auckland for improved future prospects for his children. Alan’s grandfather was Chairman of the Waikato Rugby Union; so travelling to games to watch the All Blacks was a big part of his childhood. His passion for rugby progressed into his teenage years, but an injury, which put a stop to contact sport, ended his participation. His father had brought a boat and was a keen sailor so Alan’s interest in sailing became more active. He crewed Dragons at the age of 16 and within a year participated in the Prince Phillip Cup in Brisbane. He then represented New Zealand in the World Championships in Hobart a few years later. In the late 70’s, Alan won two national titles and was selected for the pre-Olympic regatta in Tallin, Russia. Sadly, as history dictates, a boycott of the 1980 Olympics due to the Russian invasion of Afghanistan prevented him from competing. Alan drew his attention toward building, and after helping his parents build a 37’ Trimaran, he built the 40’ “Urban Cowboy”, a boat incredibly ahead of its time that went on to take line honours in 49 out of 52 races. Not long after selling his successful Urban Cowboy, Alan was invited to co-helm and be a tactician on a Maxi boat in the SORC series off Florida. Following this series, he was offered a position at Hood International’s head office in Massachusetts. During his three years there he was made Vice President and sailed in major regattas throughout the world, from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean. He was approached by Sir Michael Fay to attend a meeting in New York, where he discovered Michael had completed an agreement with Bruce Farr, Ron Holland and Laurie Davidson to work together to design a 12-metre America’s Cup yacht. Alan accepted a project coordination role and returned to New Zealand to begin work on the campaign. It would be New Zealand’s first campaign for the America’s Cup. He worked tirelessly behind the scenes in Perth in the establishment of a 120-person team, capable of winning the cup. “Although I never got to sail the experience was life changing for me. From a management perspective, it taught me time management skills, as there were dates set in stone ultimately for the cup itself that couldn’t be changed.
At the completion of the America’s Cup campaign, Alan stayed in Perth, and married a local girl. They have two sons, now ages 25 and 23. During his son’s later years in college his marriage ended, which led to him meeting the love of his life, Caroline. Caroline and Alan married and, in search of a magical sea change, they settled in Airlie after a road-trip across Australia. Alan commented, “The marine environment, weather and spectacular lifestyle, Airlie felt like home. “As a sales consultant for the Port of Airlie, I get to be around the water and meet people that share the same passion for boating that I do. What an office, what a lifestyle. It doesn’t get much better than that!”

Graham Bowling Mortgage Choice
The knowledge of an industry professional is invaluable, so when this knowledge is given for free, it’s no wonder that Mortgage Choice is becoming Mackay’s first choice for finance. The concept of offering free advice appealed to Graham Bowling, owner of Mortgage Choice, Mackay. “I first read about the Mortgage Choice model in 1995 in a magazine article. I liked the concept of helping people and not charging them anything for the service. “Thousands of clients later and many memorable successes later, it’s still a job I love. I can’t thank our community enough for the support we’ve received over the past 19 years,” Graham said. Graham saw how the Mortgage Choice model was different from other lending options, and after experiencing success stories where families had previously given up hope of ever owning their own home, Graham expanded his business to own another office in North Sydney, and has financial interest in the Rockhampton office. His passion for business was recognised by the Mortgage Choice group when Graham was awarded a business excellence award, winning his category. That year all four categories were taken out by Queenslanders, a feat that was celebrated late into the night. When the business shirt and tie come off, Graham enjoys travelling, and admits that the planning of his next adventure across the globe is close to an obsession. He has immersed himself in World War history with visits to the Kokoda Track as well as Gallipoli in Turkey, to see where our brave forefathers fought bravely for our country. In Rio de Janeiro he flew from the rugged South American coastline to land on famous Ipanema Beach on a tandem skydive, a highlight of his travels. He was born and raised in Mackay, and spent two years in Europe in his early 20’s. He played rugby league, basketball and cricket as a teenager, and continued to play rugby league in Europe, with a season with a French club. When he returned to Mackay, he played for Souths. You and your family can also have a rich and rewarding future by taking control of your finances. Make your first choice, Mortgage Choice. 42 www.corelife.com.au

Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket! Shop around first.
Are you considering buying property in the near future? If so, while it may seem easy and advantageous to apply for a home loan through the lending institution you currently deal with, this isn’t necessarily the best route to take. With interest rates hovering around record lows, and Australia’s lenders offering innovative and sharply priced home loans, there are many good reasons to shop around and consider a range of loan and lender options. MY GIFT TO YOU!
So what can you do to get your property noticed? Plentiful information on-line Buyers want a lot of information immediately to ensure that the property will suit all of their requirements. To entice them to attend your open home, or save your property to their favourites list, you need to impress. Just as you need the exterior of your home to be immaculate to encourage them to step in the front door; you need your marketing face to be impressive to entice them to want to discover more. Get descriptive In a buyer’s market, your property must stand out. Like Shakespeare, use words to woo your audience. Merely stating the number of rooms is unlikely to pique the interest of a buyer. Your description should give your property warmth and character and value. Highlight the positives that aren’t immediately obvious to a potential buyer. Dig deep to express the home’s hidden glory, rather than repeating features that a prospective buyer can clearly see in photographs.

food review
Full flavour of the Orient Have you eaten?
Food is an intricate part of Chinese culture, so much so, that often when you greet a friend in China, you would not ask “How are you,” but rather, “Have you eaten?” The ancient saying, “Food is the first necessity of the people,” illustrated how delicious cuisine is a daily celebration of health and prosperity. If you ate, you were indeed blessed. Passed from generation to generation, the same love is still given to Chinese food today as it was thousands of years ago, so I visited Mackay’s Golden Sun Chinese restaurant, tucked away in the Turtle Shores Shopping Centre at Blacks Beach. Greeted with a hearty smile and enthusiastic welcome, I couldn’t help but smile at the friendly reception they give each and every customer, regardless of whether they are dining in or taking away. The dining room is relaxed, with woven lanterns hanging from the ceiling to give a soft glowing
ambience. The restaurant welcomes BYO, so you can bring your favourite bottle of bubbles to enjoy with your meal. With more than 90 menu items, the selection is impressive, ranging from traditional western favourites such as sweet and sour pork and chicken chow mein, through to succulent flavours of the orient, including Mongolian lamb, Szechuan chicken, and duck with plum sauce. I chose the sweet and spicy flavours of a wonton soup for an entrée. This dish has been known since the period of the Tang dynasty in the seventh century, traditionally served to celebrate winter solstice. The tender dumpling filling was hearty and tasty, one of the best wonton filings experienced at any Chinese restaurant in Australia. For main, I opted for my favourite dish, chicken with cashew nuts accompanied by Golden Sun’s special fried rice. My meal was flavoursome, tender, cooked to
“My meal was flavoursome, tender, cooked to perfection and simply delicious!” perfection and simply delicious. I received a lot of cashew nuts, which were still crunchy, the vegetables were extremely fresh and crisp to the bite, and the chicken was fantastic. Not only that, the portion size was very generous, and I received much more chicken than vegetables. It was excellent value for money. The combination rice was also delicious. Fresh chives gave the dish an aromatic freshness, and the pieces of tender chicken, prawns and large chunks of ham finished the dish to perfection. With these dishes, every ingredient is served to generous proportions, and you can identify each item with certainty because each piece of meat is larger than you would often find in a fried rice. Aromatic herbs and spices, delicately marinated meats, and crisp vegetables are carefully combined in authentic Chinese dishes which vary between spicy and delicate. A romantic dinner for two or a group celebration, Mackay’s Golden Sun will exceed expectation on taste and service. www.corelife.com.au 53

AN APP A DAY…
How much technology is too much?
Today’s children are born into a world where iPads, smartphones and virtual reality technology exists. It’s no different to when we were born into a world with televisions and cars. Tablet ownership increases by the day. Once a tool for the savvy CEO, now they are commonplace within a household, and as many parents are finding, children are very proficient at using them. Parents are left asking themselves if these devices are harmful to the development of their children, or do they assist with technological intelligence? Most schools of thought agree that tablet usage with children must be monitored and considered. Handing a child an iPad to keep them quiet or act as a stand-in babysitter can be damaging to a child’s development if it takes the place of normal social interaction. Consider what they are viewing on the iPad. Is it a movie they have seen a thousand times? Or is it an educational app which can assist in learning how to read or write? There are various apps that can help your children learn to read, write, or do math in a fun interactive way. Your children will feel that they are receiving a treat by being able to use the iPad, but at the same time they are enhancing their technological proficiency and also learning while they have fun.

Hot flushes? Is it hot in here, or is it just me? Hot flashes are just one of Mother Nature’s final phases of torture, to remind you that your child-bearing days are nearing an end. They strike without warning, can arrive at embarrassing times and can make life fairly unbearable. Before you contemplate booking a one-way ticket to Alaska to bury your face in the snow, consider a local and natural alternative. Natasja Steenkamp had reached the point of utter desperation. Her hot flashes were becoming unbearable and severe. Her face would heat up to the point of being very uncomfortable, and her face would become drenched in sweat. Not ideal during a board meeting. Natasja is a university lecturer, and struggled to complete lectures when her glasses would fog up, and then become coated in sweat. They would arrive many times a day, and there was no reprieve in the evening. At night she would wake constantly, absolutely drenched in sweat. She would have to shower regularly through the night, to the point she was exhausted from lack of sleep.
the
family
A friend of Natasja’s commented “My you do have it bad,” when she described her symptoms. Natasja’s friend suggested to try acupuncture, and recommended Scott Martin from Australian Natural Fertility. When Scott reassured her that he had helped many women control their menopausal symptoms, she replied, “You sound like my man!” After only her second treatment of acupuncture, combined with taking herbal medicine daily, Natasja noticed a difference in her symptoms, and by the third treatment, three weeks after her initial consultation, she is now living completely symptom-free. No hot flashes at all! “I just couldn’t believe it, they are completely gone! “It’s like it was all just a bad nightmare. Scott has given me my life back, I can’t ever thank him enough,” Natasja said. If your hotness only comes in flashes, talk to Dr Scott Martin about natural healing alternatives, to regain control of your inner thermostat.

FOSTERING FUTURES for those less fortunate To have a child is to love unconditionally, but to love a child who isn’t biologically yours, takes a special family. John and Beverley Clark have been giving children in need a loving home in Mackay for more than 20 years. The couple moved from Tasmania to Mackay to give their four biological children a better lifestyle, and they have lived in this tropical paradise ever since. Beverley cherishes the joys of motherhood and didn’t want to stop at four children, although she knew she had quite a task at hand convincing her husband John otherwise. Sitting at a dental surgery, Beverley noticed two children playing together. One was beautifully dressed, while the other was in a singlet and nappy. She asked the mother if the two children were close, when the mother replied, “Oh that’s not mine, the child is a foster child,” pointing at the child in the nappy. The mother’s coldness towards the foster child made an impression on Beverley, who immediately warmed to the thought of becoming a foster parent. “There were children out there that really needed to be treated as a family members and not outsiders, who need parents who will open their hearts as well as their homes to children in need of stability and love. “I made some phone calls to enquire about becoming a foster parent, although at this stage John had no idea what I was planning. There was such a need for foster parents in Mackay, I knew I needed to talk to him about it,” Beverley said. Beverley and John were surprised at how easy the process to become a foster parent was. They completed a short course, and then relevant safety and criminal checks were performed to ensure the safety of the children. One week later, they were offered children to look after. They cared for children who were of similar age to their own children to allow them to blend into the family.
“We never felt threatened or that our own children were under any risk. Our foster children were extremely receptive to love and proper discipline. Many of them have emerged from terrible situations and have often been victims themselves, they needed our love and compassion for what they had been through. “Our children and foster children knew that the family could discuss anything of concern, without our judgement and scrutiny. Communication was the key to family happiness,” John said. The hardest part about being a foster parent, was saying goodbye to children they had grown to love dearly. “It’s never easy to let go and say goodbye, but there was relief in knowing that they were going back to a better life, with avenues of support. They always knew that Aunty Bev and Uncle John would always be there if they ever needed anything. “Our children made incredible friendships that will last forever, as have we. Our foster children touched our lives and made us treasure our own children even more. “We have had the privilege of keeping three of our foster children as our own, so now our family has grown to seven children. “We have helped many children during their time of need over the past 20 years, but it has been a rewarding experience, with memories we will cherish as a family,” Beverley said. John and Beverley advise that open communication within the family is the key to successful fostering, to ensure that all members of the family feel secure with any decisions to bring other children into the family. With an open heart, you can make a world of difference to a local child in need. www.corelife.com.au 61

Sylvanian Families Let the Children Play is proud to boast one of the biggest collections of Sylvanian Families in Australia - right here in Mackay.
produ reviewct
The Sylvanian Families range is far more than just an elaborate doll house. It creates an incredibly rich and detailed environment for children and adult collectors alike. Introduced in 1985, it is a collection of animal families living in an ideal country setting to create an entire community with all of the values that promote harmonious living. With its emphasis on family life and gentle play it appeals to both boys and girls and a wide age range. We delight at observing our little and big people play together with our in store Beechwood Hall playhouse – the centerpiece of the range. Toddlers love to “ni-night” the baby Chocolate Rabbit whilst 5-10 year olds love to collect and arrange the impressive choice of furniture and dwellings. The little families can even go camping in a caravan towed by Bluebell Seven Seater van. New to the range this month, and in store now, are the Forest Nursery, Party Set, Cosy Cottage Starter Home, Country Doctor, Supermarket, Toy Shop and the breathtaking Grand Hotel – a 3 storey, luxury building with stained glass windows, chandelier and nine rooms. We also have the Ballroom, Butler and Housekeeping Sets to create the perfect setting for entertainers, Grace and Kelly, to play the miniature grand piano for the hotel guests. We always ensure we have the latest additions to the range in store just as soon as it arrives in the country and we don’t see why you should have to wait for the capital city stores to get in first!
Smooth KIDS...
Are you looking for a way to combat the picky breakfast eaters in your household? Or simply want to spice up your breakfast options to send your children to school full of enthusiasm? Smoothies are a delicious, fast and healthy way to ensure your children are getting a power-packed breakfast, full of goodness, to keep them energised throughout the morning. By creating a tasty smoothie, without any gritty bits, you can win the daily food battle in your household.
Choco Monkey
When the kids think they are having a chocolate milkshake for breakfast, watch them run to the dining table! No added sugar and loads of vitamins, calcium and protein. This smoothie is ultimate brain-power food that tastes delicious! And it’s gluten free!
Ingredients
1 medium-sized ripe banana 1 tablespoon cocoa powder or cacao powder 3 tablespoons vanilla Greek yoghurt 1/4 cup milk 1/2 cup ice cubes HINT If you slice your banana and freeze the portions, you won’t need as many ice cubes.
Method
Add your banana, milk, yoghurt and cocoa into the blender and blend until smooth. Add any optional extras and then the ice to create a super cold, totally delicious smoothie.
Optional extras
If your children are a bit more adventurous and won’t mind the texture, super-boost their smoothie with a tablespoon of chia seeds, LSA (linseed, sunflower seeds and almond meal) or flax meal. If there are no nut allergies in the family, include a serve of healthy fat by adding a tablespoon of natural peanut butter or almond butter. For lactose intolerant children, you can supplement the milk for soy, coconut or almond milk. To eliminate the sugar content in vanilla-flavoured Greek yoghurt, natural yoghurt may be used, with honey added to bring back some sweetness.

AFTER
The placement of the foils underneath the parting means you are minimising regrowth effect, enhancing the texture of the layers and creating movement. Winter is all about keeping warm tones and keeping the condition and reflecting beautiful shine. To achieve such a big transformation, going from blonde to brunette, the process is a two-step plan. You must always fill your blonde with a warm tone prior to your target shade. This ensures your hair does not go green and your end result is deep and luscious. Following this, a colour lock in treatment is highly recommended to help lock the colour into the cortex, putting back moisture and closing the cuticle of the hair. With Sherrel’s haircut, we have a long layered style, which shows off her highlights and solid dark fringe, framing her face. This definitely shows off her eyes, nicely.

who asks me about my journey to get it done.
When Nikolai Romanov was chosen to be the ‘male face of eXQisit You’ in September last year, he wanted the opportunity to get more out of life. Ten months into his two year transformation, he has already surpassed expectation.
“I’m more aware of the importance of wearing sunscreen and keeping my skin healthy and clean. I have a simple skin regime, but over the past year I have watched the age drop away from my face. The up-side of looking younger is that it inspires me to get the physique I want, so that makes the physical part of the transformation easier,” Nikolai said.
“It’s given me my ‘sexy’ back, especially in confidence. In every way I feel healthier and younger, I have more energy and strength, both physically and mentally,” Nikolai said.
He has enjoyed the benefits of receiving LED light therapy and Microdermabrasion facial treatment.
His rejuvenation adventure has consisted of a holistic approach to men’s health, including strengthening the mind to relieve stress, as well as regular physical activity. He has learned about the importance of looking after his skin, including mole-mapping at the Advanced Mole Clinic. “Men are more reluctant to get their skin checked for cancer, but really they need to man-up, grow some balls and get it done. I encourage every man
“The sensation after this treatment is incredible. It complements my skincare regime and has given my face strength and structure, the clear and youthful looking skin I used to have,” Nikolai said. Although he has already come a long way, the journey isn’t over yet. Nikolai commented, “This journey has already been life changing. It makes you re-think, here’s where I am, and that’s where I could be. There’s always time to strive for improvement.”
deep and meaningfuls from a medical guru
Don’t let depression get you down! In the current economy with job insecurity especially in the mining sector, there is more stress, anxiety and depression. Life has its ups and downs and everyone can feel low at times. Normally within a week or two, people feel better and things get back to normal – but not for everyone. One in five people experience “depression” so it is really common. Unfortunately mental health problems and depression can be hard to recognise and can even present with physical symptoms only! So if you have no energy, feel irritated and not getting the pleasure from life that you should be able to enjoy – talk with your partner about it and get in and see a doctor. We can check you out for underlying medical problems and establish the source of the problem. Why do I say talk to your partner? Interestingly, it is your partner (of either sex) who will notice earlier than yourself that you are becoming a grumpy, temperamental bastard – and that is not like the “normal you!” So what are you looking for? Poor concentration, poor memory, insomnia or excess sleep, waking up thinking that you can’t be bothered, loss of interest in sex, thoughts of worthlessness, guilt, inadequacy, and that life is not worth living, to having thoughts or intent to actually kill yourself. Don’t let it get this far… So why does depression occur? It is a physical change in your brain with reduction in the chemicals in the nerves that stops the nerve cells from connecting with each other. The messages in the brain don’t get through so all functions are slowed or don’t work. That is why the symptoms are so broad and vague and can present as almost anything! This is a physical illness, just like high blood pressure, but it affects your mental state. Just like blood pressure it needs to be treated. There are two options – counseling and medications with either or both being used. Treatment is really successful with most people (60%) getting better with one course of treatment and not needing further courses. It is often like turning the light back on inside your head – so don’t refuse medication if offered as the most common statement people have made to me is that they wish they had started their treatment earlier! Put out a helping hand to someone else in need if you recognise these symptoms, see your friendly GP early and we’ll see you healthy and happy in the Bowen Basin!

CHEMICAL P
Until recently we only had a couple of choices to turn back the clock. One was to pay a lot of money and go under the knife. The other was to accept the appearance of ageing and soldier on. Now however there are so many choices that can slow down the effects of ageing that it may seem very complicated working through what to do. One of the procedures that is very popular and can really make a big difference is the chemical peel. A chemical peel is when a solution is applied to the face or other parts of the body to help peel away layers of skin. There are many different types of solutions available in varying degrees of strength to help with many different conditions including pigmentation, sun-damage, fine lines, wrinkles and acne to name just a few.
Many types of peels are very gentle with minimal to no downtime. Offer ends July 31th 2014
These types of peels include the fruit acid peels which collectively are known as alpha hydroxy acid peels (AHA’s) and beta hydroxy acid peels. These can be used to help treat acne, congestion, rosacea and many other conditions. More dramatic results can be produced with solutions such as Jessner’s Peels and Trichloroacetic Acid peels (TCA’s). These however because they lead to more dramatic results to improve pigmentation, sun damage and fine lines may need a slightly longer recovery time.

Turn back the clock
Seen. Not heard! One of the most common indications of a hearing loss are frequent requests for repetition. However many people do this but still feel that their hearing is fine. This is particularly noticeable when the person is talking to you from behind or from another room. Many people say they hear just fine as long as they are looking at you. In reality they are not hearing better. Rather they are supplementing whatever is not being heard with lip reading. Because this is an unconscious tactic most people are not aware they are doing it. Try closing your eyes when you next have a conversation with someone, particularly in noise, and you will see that you have to start concentrating more to follow the conversation. Another unconscious tactic we use is the ability for the brain to fill in the gaps of words and sentences when they are not actually heard.
We only need to hear a third of a word to be able to guess what the word is. Furthermore we only need to hear every second word in a sentence to be able to piece the content together. Take for example someone with industrial deafness or an age related hearing loss. They will have normal low frequency hearing but a significant high pitched hearing loss. With speech typically vowels are a lower pitched speech sound and the consonants are higher pitched sounds. If I tell this person as I’m walking to the bathroom, so they are unable to lip read, that “I am going to go brush my teeth”, depending on the degree of loss they will probably only actually hear “I am _oin o ru__ my _ee__”. However because I am walking to the bathroom with a tooth brush in my hand the brain is able to fill in gaps from the context of this action and the vowel speech sounds heard. However sometimes
the brain of a person with a hearing loss brain fills gaps in and what they think they heard is completely different to what was actually said. So the person with the hearing loss may think that you said “I am going to flush my pee”. Other hearing problems commonly associated with a hearing loss is difficulty hearing in background noise. Most background noise such as car noise, crowded room babble, air conditioners etc are low pitched sounds which are usually loud enough to block the listener from hearing some of the low pitched vowel sounds. However, the higher pitched consonants are still audible as the noise does not block these sounds as much and our brains are able to fill in the gaps based upon these sounds and the context of the conversation and we can maintain a conversation. When someone has a hearing loss then they may not have access to enough of the speech sounds to be able to fill in the gaps. Take for example industrial deafness and age related hearing loss with the
GRANT COLLINS Audiologist – Clarity Hearing Solutions
sentence “I am going to go brush my teeth”. In the background noise a normal hearing person will probably hear “I _m g_ing t_ g_ br__sh my t__th”. In conjunction with the lip reading enough sounds are picked up to fill in the gap. Whereas the person with the high pitched hearing loss will not have access to the starts and ends of the ends of the words and the noise is blocking the only sounds they can hear (the vowels) so not enough speech sounds are discernable to maintain a conversation.

Men and their health
in the workplace Men in the mining industry, shift work, or even in high demanding long hour days in the work place put their body under enormous stress. stress that we don’t see until it manifests as a symptom, such as weight gain, high blood pressure, digestive issues or, dare I say, erectile dysfunction. Hopefully, we can catch these symptoms before they turn into a serious health concern such as cancer, heart disease or diabetes.
While women also have these long hours in stressful workplaces we are also a little better at looking after ourselves, calling on whatever therapies are needed at the time. Our health needs are a little different. I often hear from my male clients that they have no energy, they have put on weight, can’t sleep, that they drink too much and eat too much camp food, or bad fast food in general. They are looking for solutions. They are worried that they are nearing 40 and they feel 80. Not sure of how or where to start to make significant changes. As time is limited and as access to good food is also limited, I have found that over time it is about adding in to what they are having on a daily basis to help them improve their health and vitality. Four of the strategies that I have used successfully are:
Add in filtered water
You have heard this many times. It gives you more energy than energy drinks and doesn’t give you cancer. When you don’t drink water your brain and liver dehydrate meaning you can’t think well or stay focused and your body can’t eliminate toxins, further promoting autointoxication which will drain your energy
Add in high quality minerals
Through a fermented or sprouted green powder, from the land and sea. Our adrenal system, that looks after our energy levels, needs mineral to function. Did you know that soil has 108 minerals, as does our body?
Add in cultured vegetables and/or coconut kefir Not only is this full of bacteria, enzymes and minerals, it supports the liver and detoxification pathways making us feel vibrant and balanced.
Add in breathing
Yes, breath into your belly before going to bed. Place your hands on your belly and breath in and out feeling the rise and fall of your abdomen for 20 minutes. This not only gets rid of stale air and toxins but lowers cortisol so you can rest. Add in these four simple steps and watch your vitality grow, your positive thinking exude and your wellbeing skyrocket. If you would like to know more, I do health and lifestyle consultations, either individually or in workplace, on how to manage emotional, spiritual and physical stress. Stress is the biggest cause of inflammation in our body leaving it open to disease. It is also preventable. Products are available at Bottoms Up.

billfish
Winter and into spring are great fishing seasons in the Whitsundays. It’s the time when the pelagic action really heats up with mackerel, tuna and highly prized billfish on offer. Certainly seasons vary from year to year but, if the start is anything to go by, we should be in for a bumper mackerel season. Tuna usually turn up a little later than the mackerel, more into spring, and then spread into the warmer months of summer also. When I’m talking billfish I’m talking about juvenile black marlin and sailfish. The black marlin range anywhere from 5kg to around 30kg on average, although occasionally a bigger model does get hooked. These smaller fish are the offspring from the big females that breed each year further north on the Great Barrier Reef and they are making their annual run down the coast. We usually get a good indication on our season ahead from the reports of Cairns and Townsville fishermen targeting these fish. So far this year there have been a few caught up that way so fingers crossed the next few months should have us mixing it with these prized fish. Sailfish are also mixed in with the juvenile blacks and average 25kg in weight but have been hooked and caught in this area over 60kg. Sailfish would have to be one of my favorite fish to target. Once hooked, they put on a fantastic aerobatic display of jumps and high speed runs. They are also considered one of the fastest, if not the fastest, fish that swims, so a great challenge on light tackle. They have to be one of the most beautiful fish, also, with its elegant sail that stands tall when it’s herding up baitfish. Setting up to catch billfish doesn’t need to be too complicated. A good quality overhead reel, spooled with 10-15kg monofilament, matched to a suitable rod is a good starting point. The most important thing is that the drag on the reel operates smoothly and can be set for a strike drag of 1/3rd the breaking strain so around 3.5kg for 10kg line or 5kg for the 15kg line. This will prevent the line breaking when a billfish bites and then has a high speed run. Your mainline is best if it has a small double with a bimini twist or a plait attached to a 100lb snap swivel. This way you can clip on and off lures/ baits easily. There are several methods to catch billfish from both dead and live baits to lures, both hard bodied and, what we call, skirted pushers. There are hundreds of different lures out there and we could talk for hours about it. A good place to start is your local tackle store. Not only will they have the right lures for your area but also the right advice on how to use them. Next month, I will touch on how to set up your trolling spread and good places to start trolling in search of these highly challenging and prized fish.
