ARE YOU GOING THROUGH A SEPARATION? IF SO, FIND OUT YOUR RIGHTS BY COMING TO ONE OF OUR

FREE INFORMATION NIGHTS.

Did you know? THAT UNDER THE FAMILY LAW ACT STRICT TIME LIMITS APPLY IN RELATION TO CLAIMS FOR PROPERTY SETTLEMENT AND SPOUSAL MAINTENANCE ARISING FROM SEPARATION AND/OR DIVORCE?

Are you at risk of losing your entitlement because a time limitation has been missed? It is important that separating couples are aware of the time limitations that exist in family law matters, as missing those dates can have a detrimental effect on your right to make a property settlement claim. Married couples have twelve months from when a divorce order is made within which to finalise their property settlement. In addition, married couples are not able to apply for a divorce until they have been separated for a period of 12 months, but the property settlement process can commence immediately after separation. For de facto couples, the time limitation is two years from the date of separation. If you have separated from your partner we suggest that you take the following steps to protect your rights: • Commence negotiations to attempt to reach an agreement in relation to the division of property within the time limit applicable to your situation. We recommend that any agreement be formalised by way of an Application for Consent Orders or a Binding Financial Agreement. • If you have been unable to reach an agreement, you should file an Application in the court to protect your rights. The Application does not need to be resolved or finalised prior to the expiration of the limitation period, it just needs to be filed in the court.

What if you have been unable to complete one of the above two options? There is provision in the Family Law Act to proceed with a property Application outside of the time limit if the court is satisfied that hardship would be suffered if an extension of time is not granted. The existence of hardship does not only relate to the parties but also to children of the marriage or de facto relationship. Even though the legislation provides for opportunities to proceed outside of time, it is always recommended that parties comply with time limitations as there is a risk that an Application to proceed will not be granted and as a result a party (or both) could lose their right to seek a property settlement or spousal maintenance order. Having to take steps to seek leave to proceed outside of time will, in most cases, incur extra legal costs that would not be incurred if the matter was resolved in accordance with the legislation and within the limitation period. If you have recently separated, you should ensure that you seek independent legal advice as to the time limitations relevant to your circumstances.

Free Family Law Seminar H

i, I’m Samantha Sticklan (Solicitor) at McKays Family Law. I will be conducting a free information night in Mackay on Tuesday 13th September, 2016 and Airlie Beach on Tuesday 11th October, 2016, from 5:15pm to 7:00pm, to explain to you “who gets what” property when you separate from your partner Because of my experience in Family Law, I understand the pressures of breaking up, and in down-to-earth language will point out some of the common problems in Family Law property disputes and how you can avoid them. I’ll give you tips to help you take control so you can get on with your life and discuss how your settlements are worked out. I will also talk to you about: the superannuation laws and how superannuation is now treated as property; how superannuation is now split;

whether you get more property if the children are living with you; what happens if you owned a lot of assets in your own name before your marriage; what happens if you have a business, etc; and arrangements for the children. I will give you guidance on how to avoid costly Court disputes and will also explain the different steps involved when cases proceed through the Family Court (in situations where there is no choice but to go to Court). There will also be time for general discussion and questions.

HOW DO YOU SAY A FOREVER GOODBYE? It’s been 4 weeks since my beautiful nan passed away. Not being able to fly out to be there with her before she passed, I called her knowing this call would be my forever goodbye. Not able to speak to me, but only listen. This would be the very last moment in my life I have with her. What do I say? I told her how much I loved her and thanked her for being that special someone in my world who made such a difference. I told her I was flying out the next day to be with her, but if she couldn’t hang on, it was ok, she didn’t have to. I cried and cried into the phone and said, “I will miss you forever, but nan it’s ok you can let go. “ As I hung up, I felt like I had so much more to tell her, so much more I wanted to say. Five minutes later, I got the call to say she had passed. In the days that followed, and helping my family pack up her little home, I found a letter she had stashed away, that I wrote to her when I was 11 years old. I couldn’t believe she had kept it, and how such a simply letter would mean so much to her. I also realised that this letter was part of my forever goodbye. Just like the letter an 11-year-old girl writes to her nan, and all the moments shared before and after. They are all apart of a forever goodbye. A forever goodbye is the total sum of the love you have given, received and shared, and the memories that make up these moments. My forever goodbye to my nan was 38 years in the making. I know my nan remembers and cherishes each and every moment we had. I know this because she loved me so much and she knew I loved her just the same. After realising this, I knew there was nothing else we needed to say. The truth is everyone is dying, from the moment we are born we are, and the only thing that really matters on our journey is the love and memories we have created with those who matter most. So, today, go out and create your own special moments with the people you love, and remember you are creating a part of your forever goodbye. So make sure every moment counts! As nan would say, mind as you go! xxx

from Mackay Airport! It’s been busy times in Mackay. July saw two first class events, the Mackay Region Tourism Awards and the Queensland Mining & Engineering Exhibition. Congratulations to some special Tourism Award winners: ibis Mackay (Gold - Standard Accommodation); Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival (Gold - Festival & Events); and Mick Pope’s posthumous award for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual for his tireless work in developing the Mackay Airport Beach Horse Racing Festival into an iconic event for our region. The success of this year’s Festival was also a tribute to Mick, and his partner Chrissy Evangelou, who has carried on his legacy. Earlier in August it was the Mechanos Wings and Wheels featuring amazing aerobatics displays, custom cars and bikes. Great news for Fashion Week Mackay, which hits the runway 6-8 October, with North Jacklin Mercedes coming on board as naming rights sponsor. Mackay Airport is proud to be part of the local support for these events that bring enormous benefits to our region. We aim to support local businesses whenever we can. Recent examples include Woollam Constructions who built the ibis Mackay hotel, Vassallo Constructions who created the new front of terminal area, and our motorised mobile plant and equipment contractor, Viking Mechanical Another key partnership for us is with helloworld Mackay. We are working with them and airline partners to deliver the first international service for Mackay, direct to New Zealand, with the 2017 snow season firmly in our sights. Right now, thanks to helloworld Mackay, one lucky Mackay Airport customer will win a trip to Sydney to see Aladdin the Musical, including airfares, accommodation, breakfast and Mackay Airport parking. Make sure you get your entry in! Happy and safe travels.

TALK ON THE STREET

IF YOU COULD HAVE THE ANSWER TO ANY QUESTION, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

The Great Barrier Reef is a very important part of the Whitsundays

I guess the question I would most like the answer to is how to protect and sustain the reef and all its corals and wildlife so that other generations, visitors and tourists to Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays get to see the Great Barrier Reef in all its glory for many years to come. The Great Barrier Reef is a very important part of the Whitsundays and everyone in the world should get the opportunity to see this natural wonder.`

Would we benefit from having the answer to our questions or would that just give rise to even more challenging questions that we don’t have the answer to?

I was reminded of a joke about an injured angel who fell to earth and as a reward to mankind for being nursed back to health, offered to answer one question; after much thought and deliberation on behalf of the world, the Pope asked the angel the question - ‘So what is God like?’ Would we benefit from having the answer to our questions or would that just give rise to even more challenging questions that we don’t have the answer to? The punch line to the joke? The angel thought for a moment and, as the world waited with baited breath, replied ‘Well…..she’s black………”.

The idea of “The Butterfly Effect” comes from the science of chaos theory

I’d really like to know when the Mackay cedar trees are going to flower next! Since I’ve been living in the Whitsundays the Mackay Cedars have flowered twice on a major scale, that I have been aware of. That is where you can look up the mountain and see the white covered trees and wonder, ‘Wow, what tree is that flowering in our hills.” A few trees in our local forests have sporadic flowering and hence seeding, determined by rainfall, temperature and who knows what else. It could be “The Butterfly Effect”, a collection of events that create an outcome, totally unpredictable. “The idea of “The Butterfly Effect” comes from the science of chaos theory. It suggests that everything is connected, to the extent that the beating of a butterfly’s wings in one part of the world may ultimately contribute to a tornado happening in another part of the world. We recognise that, when it comes to the impact we as individuals have on our environment, small changes can make a huge difference.” I try and predict the outcome of my actions, but cannot possibly know.

The pride of

PROSERPINE ROME WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY, BUT HOW LONG DID IT ACTUALLY TAKE? WELL, THAT QUESTION IS STILL UP FOR DEBATE AND NO ONE HAS AN EXACT ANSWER. BUT AS FOR THE PROSERPINE WHITSUNDAY JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB, IT’S TAKEN 50 YEARS AND IS STILL GROWING STRONGER WITH EACH SEASON. Hailed as one of the greatest junior rugby league clubs in Queensland, the Proserpine Junior Brahmans are represented by nearly 250 talented young players, ranging in age from under-6 to under-16s. It is now one of the bigger clubs in the Mackay competition but, as Brad Henry explains, it took some effort for Proserpine to join that competition. “Transportation and the ability to travel to venues was a major hurdle in the founding years. The senior players could jump on a train to get to games and then return the next day in the early hours of the morning, but that just wasn’t an option for the juniors. The early teams were formed around the schools and that’s how competition begun. If you travelled to Bowen to play the Bowen teams, you would make the trip, play three or four games in one day and return home, perhaps without playing another game for the rest of the month.” “When Proserpine first joined the Mackay competition, it was still tough on the parents and supporters. In a season with 20 rounds, Proserpine would get one home game and the other 19 were away, at great expense to the families of the players,” he said.

Brad was formerly the Queensland Rugby League development officer for the Mackay-Whitsundays area and is now the Coaching Coordinator for the Brahmans. He approached Queensland Rugby League in the hope of making it more affordable for teams from Proserpine to play in the Mackay competition. “With a view that the sport should be equal for every child playing, regardless of what club they were from, Queensland Rugby League implemented changes which saw Proserpine awarded with more home games over time. This has really helped with the development of the club,” Brad said. The club wouldn’t be the beacon of success that it is today without many years of hard work and sacrifice from a large number of people. From the founding men who drove their tractors to carve out the playing fields, to the mums and dads who give up their evenings and weekends to help with game duties and fundraising. At the 50 year celebration held earlier this year, a new clubhouse and memorabilia room was officially opened. For a regional junior club, the PWJRL club has some of the best facilities and playing fields of any club in Queensland. The Proserpine community can stand and take a bow, especially the many

LIVING PROOF THAT YOU DON’T NEED TO MOVE TO A BIG CITY TO MAKE IT BIG IN RUGBY LEAGUE, PAUL BOWMAN IS NOW THE HEAD OF THE HIGH PERFORMANCE UNIT FOR THE NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS, AFTER A LEGENDARY CAREER AS A PLAYER. HIS RUGBY LEAGUE JOURNEY STARTED RIGHT HERE, IN PROSERPINE.

Bowman has been part of the North Queensland Cowboys since the club formed in 1995. In 13 seasons, he is still one of the highest-capped players of all time with 203 first grade games for the Cowboys and 12 State of Origin matches for the Maroons. He captained the Cowboys from 2001 to 2004 and retired in 2007. He went to University in Brisbane in 1994 and played for the Brahmans during the holidays. He was told that if the Brahmans made the finals that year, they would fly him back from Brisbane. He was listed as a reserve for the next few games and then flew back for the finals. During the third game, the first ever coach for the Cowboys was there with scouts. They offered Bowman a trial and the rest is history. Bowman was part of the inaugural North Queensland Cowboys team at age 19. Back then, rugby league was a part-time sport, so Bowman had to defer his University education to work a part-time job in a sports store to pay the bills while he was playing. The playing team would even help lay the turf on the hill around the ground before the start of each season. Things are much different now and Bowman believes there are even more opportunities for young players in rural communities to succeed than ever before. “The pathways for players are more defined, bringing more opportunities for kids in regional Queensland to get noticed,” Paul said. Paul’s key piece of advice for young players is to get as much education as possible by watching the greats in action.

“Growing up, we were lucky if there was one televised game of league on the weekend. I would watch Wally Lewis play for WynnumManly before he was selected for the first State of Origin game.” “Study the great players in your position and watch how they play, how they move, how they defend. If you’re a halfback, study Jonathan Thurston. If you’re a hooker, watch Cam Smith. Pick a master of the game and study them. Other than attending club practice and playing on the weekend, it’s the best education you can get,” he said. If you’re wondering about nutrition, Paul shared that even the Cowboys players themselves enjoy a treat after the game. “During the week when the boys are training they are pretty strict on what they eat, but after a game, that’s the time they have the luxury of increasing their calorie intake and enjoying something they wouldn’t normally have. It’s normally something like some pizza, chicken schnitzels and dessert,” he said. In recognition and honour of Paul’s link with Proserpine Whitsundays Junior Rugby League, the annual, two-day rugby league carnival for under nine players has been named the Paul Bowman Challenge. These young boys and girls are the future of this great game and, thanks to local legends like Paul, they have even more opportunities to follow their footy dreams.

BETTA HOME LIVING When it comes to a Betta BBQ, nothing cooks quite like a Weber. The flavour of the grill, unforgettable family gatherings, best friends bonding and charred food; you don’t need to be a master chef to produce masterful food. That’s the beauty of it. Betta Home Living are your Whitsunday Weber specialists, the only stockist of the legendary Weber currently in the Mackay and Whitsunday regions. The locally-owned Betta Home Living is a family business, owned and operated by Marcus and Nicole Craig. The couple moved to the Whitsundays in 2003 from the tiny town of Taralga in New South Wales. If you haven’t heard of Taralga before, you can be forgiven. It’s approximately as far south as Wollongong and further inland than the Blue Mountains, with a population of around 250 people. The Craig’s purchased Retravision, before rebranding to Betta Home Living in 2012. Their country charm and personal service is what makes shopping at Betta an absolute delight.

Together with their team; Jack, Mark and Sharon, they go above and beyond to ensure their customers receive the best advice. From the moment you enter the store, you’re treated as part of the family and treated to good old-fashioned customer service. Marcus and Nicole are on the shop floor most days ensuring the personal touch is maintained. As well as being the region’s Weber BBQ specialists, Betta Home Living stock all the major brands of electronics you would expect to find, backed by Betta’s famous service. Since the store’s renovations, Betta Home Living have been able to expand its range and now offers unique lines of furniture, with a focus on beds. Its cooking display is also a great place

for inspiration, if you are planning on renovating your kitchen or building new. Marcus and Nicole have three sons; Toby, Angus and Harry. They are actively involved in the community and support most of the schools and sporting organisations throughout the Whitsundays where possible. “We love the community spirit and loyalty of Airlie Beach, so we pay it forward with as much community support as we can; by sponsoring local schools, sporting organisations and charities; to say thank you for welcoming our family with open arms,” Marcus said. On the corner of Shute Harbour Road and William Murray Drive, Betta Home Living offer just that, better solutions for home and living for you to enjoy. www.corelife.com.au 25

WE OFTEN HAVE YOUNG CLIENTS THAT WOULD LIKE TO START A PROPERTY INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO WITH ONE OF OUR $500,000 5 BEDROOM EXECUTIVE HOMES IN BRISBANE. Just last week we had a client wanting to know if we could help him start his property investment portfolio. He earns $80,000 per annum, has savings of $10,000 and no debt. He is 21 years of age and his parents are willing to be his guarantor. If you have saved for years for the deposit on your first investment property, you appreciate the opportunity to start a portfolio and do everything you can to pay it off. If parents are to be guarantor, it is important that youngsters demonstrate to themselves, to the parents and their Bank that they have the ability and the discipline to be worthy of their parent’s support. It is a very serious matter for the parents, as not only are they putting their house at risk, they are also the guarantor. I would always suggest they get independent legal advice to ensure they realise the serious consequences of being a guarantor. Once enough has been paid off the loan and the value of the property has increased with inflation so that there is 20% equity, the Bank will then usually release the parents from their guarantee. My advice to young people who have good savings is to start their property investment portfolio sooner rather than later. It will be a decision that they will not live to regret.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR CUSTOMERS WANT?

HAVE YOU EVER STOOD IN FRONT OF A COUNTER, SEEING OTHER CUSTOMERS AHEAD OF YOU, RECOGNISING THAT THE ASSISTANT IS BUSY, BUT FELT INTENTIONALLY IGNORED? ALL YOU USUALLY WANT IS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT, HOWEVER IF THE ASSISTANT CONTINUES TO IGNORE YOU, YOU’RE IMPATIENCE TENDS TO FLARE. IF YOU STICK AROUND FOR LONG ENOUGH, BY THE TIME YOU DO GET SOME HELP YOU ARE CERTAINLY NOT FEELING VALUED AS A CUSTOMER. The truth is, good customer service isn’t hard, it is about giving them what they want. But do you know what your customers want? What they really really want? (Imagine Spice Girls singing - sorry, had to do it!) So how do you know what they want? Ask them! But most importantly, listen to them. Social media and review sites are great tools for ‘hearing’ want your customers want. By choosing to ignore comments and opinions online about your business, you are effectively being the assistant behind the counter ignoring the person in front of you trying to give their money! The hugely popular Pokemon Go have recently experienced a major hurdle by not ‘listening’ to their clients regarding some buggy aspects of the app. What did they do wrong? Nothing! They didn’t, listen, engage or exploit this brilliant opportunity which could have converted these dedicated lovers into Brand Advocates. The outcome? The silent reaction to these comments on the internet by the game’s developer portrayed the user as undervalued in the scheme of the game, resulting in a vengence online and demand for a large number of refunds. By ignoring and embracing these little nuggets of user opinions about the product, Pokemon Go has seen a negative result being a shattering fall out with the most loyal customers.

Quite simply, the heart of the problem was that their team didn’t have an established system to handle community feedback, whether good or bad. Done right, there could have been three positive outcomes in this situation for Pokemon Go. 1. The developer would have been better serving the customers, not the product by reacting silently to all feedback online. 2. By responding and engaging with these passionate users, they could have fostered an even stronger community around Pokemon Go. 3. The developer could have used this extremely helpful in product development to give customers a better experience - what they really really want! Don’t miss out on your opportunity to learn from your online supporters. Engage and embrace them, and by doing so you will be fostering their loyalty to your business. If you would like to know how you can better embrace your customers online, visit 8seconds.com.au or call Tolita on 0488 117 728. 8 Seconds, marketing for your business.

After spending the past four years overlooking the inland plains of the Maranoa Region, Whitsunday Coast Airports’ new General Manager, Ben Jones, is relishing the chance to get his boat back out on the water. But his first priority is on the growth of the region’s airports. During Ben’s tenure at Roma Airport, passenger numbers grew significantly, more than tripling to peak at 317,000 over three years. “I believe the experience I gained in dealing with the growing pains that were experienced during that time in Roma will enable me to lead the Whitsunday Coast Airports team through its current growth, of more than 22 percent, experienced last financial year,” Ben said.

progressing my way through an Airport Management Professional Accreditation Program, which once complete will result in an International Airport Professional qualification.”

What plans are in place for future growth of flights in and out of Proserpine? “I am currently working with a number of airlines to increase the frequency of current services. After speaking with Mayor Willcox, both he and I would like to see the return of an early morning flight that will facilitate those conducting business out of the region to return the same day.”

What are you most looking forward to doing in your spare time in the Whitsundays? “I absolutely love fishing and am extremely excited to finally get my boat out on the water again. It has been more than four long years since I have even laid eyes on the boat, as I left it with a friend closer to the water in Victoria.” “I might be a bit rusty getting the boat on or off the trailer so if you see me down at the boat ramp taking a little extra time, you will understand why. I am sure it won’t take me too long to get the hang of it again.”

We put Ben in the Hot Seat to find out more.

MAKING A

DifferenceTogether Thanks to a group of people with a disability, the unique beauty of the Whitsundays is being protected for generations to come. Determined to conserve the Barrier Reef and local wildlife, and enjoying the opportunity to make a difference in their community, the Endeavour Foundation group has been trawling the local coastline for several years, clearing away discarded and washed-up litter. For Jim, it’s all about ‘protecting the turtles’ while Charlie and Cody say that the solution is simple, ‘just don’t drop rubbish’. Jenny has been helping keep the local beach clean nearly every week for a few years. “It keeps our beaches looking nice and attractive, also it’s protecting our environment and our reef,” she said. “I am very happy with what I have achieved – keeping our community clean and tidy. We put rubbish straight into rubbish bags and then straight into the bins provided. Everyone should be doing that.” Jardi said that protecting the coral and marine life is what motivates him. “I’m happy to help. I like keeping our community looking nice,” he said. 30 www.corelife.com.au

Kate Lemke, Service Development & Innovation Manager with Endeavour Foundation at Cannonvale, said that the experience continues to benefit the volunteers hugely. “We all like to feel like we are making a difference in the community and people with a disability are no different. The ability to engage with their local community, and to feel like they’re really contributing something, is incredibly important for the volunteers,” Kate said. “With the impending roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), we have high hopes that opportunities to engage with the local community will become increasingly available. As an organisation we’ve always been committed to person-centred care, and now we have a funding system that truly reflects that ethos.” “People with a disability will become a far more visible part of our community as the NDIS makes it easier for them to get involved in community groups and events, join the workforce, take part in learning and training opportunities, live independently and start to achieve other life goals. It’s a hugely exciting time and Endeavour Foundation will be there to offer support every step of the way.” If you would like to know more about Endeavour Foundation in the Whitsundays and Mackay, please contact Kate Lemke on 0749676810.

The Serious

Business of play...

If you’d like to see an example of what a focused community is capable of when they really strive for a goal, simply take a walk along Coral Esplanade, Cannonvale Beach. You’ll soon see the Logan’s Adventure Playground. (LAP). A unique picket fence stands proudly at the front of the 2000 sq meters of playground. Along its 58m frontage are individual family pickets, which have been professionally inscribed by Angel Signs. The names of children, families and businesses are displayed. Every picket has a story.

HOPE is heartfelt collation of poem narratives written by Billie Kind Through her amazing gifts of emp and insight this book is to inspire give hope to others.

After a tragic accident, Billie’s life was at 12 years old. Her family have no together her works in order to fulfil h so that her words can complete her

Some extremely heart warming. Only a handful of pickets remain for sale for the outside of the fence, however there has been such a fantastic response to the pickets, A decision has been made to continue with the pickets along the inside of the fence, meaning they can be viewed from inside the playground. There is no question of the durability of the pickets. They are made from composite materials, so they will stand the test of both weather and time, making the $99 investment even more attractive! The added bonus for busineses is that the picket purchase can be claimed as an operating expense, as the business name is being advertised on the fence. Driving the fund raising for LAP is Play and Shine Project Group, who came on board as a major stake holder in October last year. This is a team of 7 dedicated and passionate people who strive to bring awareness to LAP and encourage future sponsorships. The group also organizes fund raising events and co– ordinates all marketing of LAP. Apart from receiving a Community Purpose Sanction to collect funds and facilitate fund raising for this specific cause (through The office Of Fair Trading QLD), PSPG are also a registered Charity. Tanya Bandow heads up all Grant applications for the group and has been busy with the preparation of

3 Grants submissions, both Govt and private. This has allowed President Lisa Christofersen to concentrate on marketing and sponsorships. Lisa is also Logan’s mum, and has been involved in the project from day 1. We caught up with Lisa for an update: “July & August were particularly great months for LAP. Lisa and Jonathan Moir of GJ Gardner Homes Whitsunday, expressed genuine interest in helping with the project. They have now teamed with us in a major sponsorship, offering to install the next piece (The Edge Fort), assist with future equipment installations and basically offering practical help where they can. We call this “in kind sponsorship.” “PSPG were able to purchase the $42,322.00 Edge Fort after just 8 months of fund raising, however, we then had to raise a further $15,000 for its installation. Basically, GJ Gardner Homes are enabling children to play on The Edge Fort significantly sooner than we could have imagined!” “We were also thrilled at the announcement that LAP had been included in the Whitsunday Regional Council 2016/17 budget. We have been allocated $40,000 which will enable us to purchase the Nest Swing. “As far as adventure equipment goes, we still have the two embankment

slides and the vertical rubber soft fall material for the climbing area, along with the Rope Parkour. We’ll still require funds for hard scaping materials such as steps, retainer walls, BBQ shelters, the sponsor wall, bubblers, artwork and seating. Not to forget the plants, irrigation, turf and mulch.” “We have also received a $5000 donation from a beautiful member of the community, who recently lost her brother to melanoma. It was the wish of her brother to donate some of his estate to a specific project, which could demonstrate the importance of sun safety. She was a shining star. Bright, beautiful and viewed in wonderment by those who knew her. An exceptionally talented athlete and academically gifted, she had the world at her feet. But her hopes and dreams are no longer, when a tragic accident ended her life at just 12 years old. Billie Kinder grew up in the Whitsundays with her parents, Danny and Dave; and her older sister, Charlie. The family grew up on horses and Billie was sitting on a horse before she could walk. She was a natural. Billie and Charlie attended Cannonvale State School and St Catherine’s Catholic College before the family moved to New South Wales in pursuit of the country’s best equestrian competitions. Billie thrived in her new environment. Touted as a star to watch in the future, Billie won the titles of NSW Champion Primary School Showjumping Rider and Overall Primary School Champion Rider. Bruce Farrar, CEO of Equestrian NSW called Billie “one of our best young riders.” Not only gifted on a horse, Billie was an avid writer, a talented poet and dreamed of publishing her own book. No one other than Billie knows what happened on the day she lost her life. She was walking her beloved horse, Diesel, when the unimaginable happened. It is thought her horse was spooked and trampled Billie during its panic. As any parent will express, the thought of losing a child is horrific and devastating. A piece of your soul is extinguished and it feels like the pain will never go away. How do you get out of bed? How do you face the

day knowing your ray of sunshine is gone? Through the immense heartache, Danny found strength through the words of her daughter. “We started to read her poetry. A lot of her pieces we had read before, but a few of her works we were reading for the first time. “Billie was such a deep thinker. A lot of her poems were heavy and addressed feelings like powerlessness, injustice and naivety; but they all had a common ending. They all ended in hope,” Danny said. Inspired by the love for her daughter, Danny, with the help of close friends and family, compiled Billie’s poetry into a book. The book is aptly named, Hope. A collection of beautifully written poetry, Hope is written and illustrated by Billie Kinder. It is her hopes, dreams and thoughts captured between a cover. The book she talked so often about publishing, is now published. Even in death, Billie’s dream came true. But her legacy won’t end there. Danny and Dave are working toward Hope being introduced into every classroom and library across Australia so Billie’s words can inspire others. A girl wiser than her years, Billie addressed issues such as bullying, loneliness and sadness as well as hopes and dreams. The Kinder’s hope that this reference may inspire other children to share their feelings and for the book to be used during ‘circle time’ for classmates to discuss with their teacher. Billies teacher, Mr McNab said, “Billie remains with us through her words and I am very blessed to see parts of her work that she produced in class in print. That’s pretty cool.”

“The school counsellor, Mrs De Keizer, has been assisting the children in talking about and working through their grief. She commented that the children still feel like Billie is with them again when they work through the book and were happy to have something of her to hold,” Danny said. The beautifully composed hardback is available for purchase at www.flyhighbillie.com. Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Billie Kinder Trust to be distributed to charities that will make a difference you can see. “Billie had a lot of empathy for mistreated animals and sick children. We want to make sure the donation will go to a charity where we can see the difference that Billie’s contribution will make, something she would be proud of,” Danny said.` A shining star on Earth and now one in the sky, fly high Billie Kinder, fly high.

Defying the odds

OLIVIA & EDDIE DEICKE

Infertility

is somewhat of a taboo topic, but it shouldn’t be, as it’s more common than people realise. According to IVF Australia, infertility affects about 1 in 6 Australian couples of reproductive age.

Olivia and Eddie Deicke were lucky to defy those odds. During the first month of trying to fall pregnant, Olivia visited a doctor on the Gold Coast who confirmed that she had a small amount of endometriosis and a small cyst near one of her ovaries. She had surgery to try and rectify the issues. However after another couple of months of heartache, she became concerned. “I had lost a lot of weight and I was concerned that my body wasn’t healthy enough to conceive.” “I was told about Rowena’s naturopathy methods at Whitsunday Health Clinic, so, seeing no downside, I made an appointment to go and see her,” Olivia said. From results of a blood test, Rowena was able to diagnose Olivia’s deficiencies and started her on a combination of supplements to support good health. “After only a week of treatment I began to feel much better. I was more energetic and sleeping better. I visited Rowena once a month and you could see the improvement in my health each time,” Olivia said. Within three months of Olivia’s first visit, she fell pregnant. “I can’t even describe how Eddie and I felt when we found out we were pregnant. We were excited and nervous at the same time. The realisation that this is actually happening. We couldn’t contain our happiness and called our mothers straight away,” Olivia said. Olivia continued to see Rowena monthly for nutritional support to maintain a healthy pregnancy. She gave

birth to a healthy baby boy, Harry, who is now 17 months old. “Harry is one crazy toddler, the life of the party, always has a smile and laughs a lot. He’s a true country boy, loves to be outside playing with his three big dogs or sitting on a tractor with Nanny and Poppy on their farm, Collingvale Station.” “There’s never a dull moment! If he’s quiet, then I know he’s up to something, like now as I speak, he’s unpeeled five bananas and is walking around with them in his hands and mouth!” Olivia and Eddie’s joy doubled when they found out that Olivia is pregnant with their second child. “This time around it happened naturally and really fast! We still follow Rowena’s nutritional advice and I believe this helped us to quickly conceive.Eddie and I quite often say to each other that we don’t know what we did without Harry in our lives. There is nothing better than seeing Eddie get home from a week working away and see the excitement on Harry’s face as he walks through the front door.” “We can’t describe enough, our level of gratitude to Rowena for her help with our journey. The love and joy that Harry brings to our lives is indescribable and to think we might have missed out on that is heartbreaking,” Olivia said. For advice on health and fertility, make an appointment to see Whitsunday Health Clinic. The natural option to improved health and well-being.

Whitsunday Health Clinic ROWENA KISSUN

It’s not that hard to be healthy. It’s a simple philosophy, but one which Rowena Kissun says is the starting point for living in good health. “We all want our body and mind to remain healthy and vibrant, to enjoy the wonders of what is most precious to us. The best advice I can give is to start making healthy changes now to improve your health.” Rowena is a naturopath, having completed medical science qualifications at the University of Western Sydney and naturopathic qualifications with the University of New England (Armidale). She is qualified in the areas of Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Nutrition and Western Herbal Medicine. Rowena’s desire to become a naturopath came from a disconnect she felt between the way we treat our body and its functionality. “Growing up in Rylstone, NSW and helping dad in his pharmacies, I have watched thousands of people walk in with a disease and walk out with a script. Preventing disease is more than just taking a tablet.” “Studying naturopathy allowed me to be in a field of medicine which allows me to educate my patients on food, healthy living and natural medicines as well as motivate them with my stories and pure enthusiasm for life,” she said. This attitude to fueling positive minds and healthy bodies has shown success across a number of ailments. In particular, Rowena’s approach to naturopathy has assisted many local couples with fertility at her Cannonvale office, Whitsunday Health Clinic. “A healthy pregnancy takes more than just a sperm and an egg. It is very important to consider what can be done before and during pregnancy that has been proven by science to contribute to a long, healthy, disease-free life for that child.”

“Fertility treatments at my clinic are science and pathology based treatments, aimed at correcting deficiencies, identifying issues and treating them to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Our science based techniques are well respected by the medical profession and encouraged by IVF clinics in Mackay, Brisbane and Sydney,” Rowena said. Rowena’s passion for science, medicine and natural remedies takes her all over the world. She divides her time between Whitsunday Health Clinic in Cannonvale and her office in Sydney (Kissun Pharmaceuticals). This year she has been establishing her own skin care range, Kissun Skin Science. The skin care range is currently making its way to 12 countries to compliment sister products, CardiOz and Mum-2-B, which are naturopathic supplements she manufactures with her father. These brands take her across the world where she is able to further explore natural remedies used by other cultures. When she isn’t rising to great heights in her career, she is on top of the world scaling some of the Earth’s greatest peaks. She is a huge fan of altitude mountaineering and says she has an obsession with the seven summits. “I recently summited Europe’s tallest peak in France, Mt Blanc, and have completed Pico Bolivar (Venezuela), Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Kala Patar (Nepal) amongst others. I have a list of 6000m plus peaks to tick off my bucket list. I’ll take the easy climb up Kosciusko this New Year break then start my training for some mountains I need to peak in Russia and Argentina next year,” she said. Make the commitment to live happier. With scientifically validated treatments, advice and supplements, Whitsunday Health Clinic iswww.corelife.com.au your key to a healthier 37 life.

Helping the world one plate of food at a time, Zambrero isn’t just great tasting Mexican, it’s Mexican with a mission. In fact, while most of us see Zambrero as a restaurant, franchise partners Peter Quinn and Fiancée Deb Klap explain that it’s more like a humanitarian organisation that just happens to sell delicious food. “The mission is to end world hunger, one plate at a time. The concept is simple, with every bowl or burrito sold, a plate of food is donated to someone in need through our distribution partner, Stop Hunger Now. “Zambrero’s story began in Australia and in recognition of a number of Australian families doing it tough, Zambrero also donates meals to underprivileged Australian communities through Foodbank,” Peter said. Peter and Deb are franchise partners of both Zambrero restaurants in Mackay; located in Caneland Shopping Centre and on Gordon Street in the CBD. As parents of two young

children, Elsie and Jack, the desire to help feed underprivileged children is a cause close to their heart. The couple met in New York while travelling the world in 2008. They then spent two days together on a trip to Niagara Falls before losing contact for three years. They met again in 2011 and as they say, the rest is history. With two children and two businesses to run; family time is an important factor in their day, but as Peter explains, it’s not always easy. “Partner support is everything. Prior to our first restaurant opening we got engaged and Deb was already 12 weeks pregnant on opening day. Opening two restaurants in 12 months took a lot of hard work and family time did take a back seat. It was tough. “Deb’s support and the work she puts in at home is as valuable as mine in the restaurants. It’s a team effort. We’re just starting to get the balance right now, with a focus on working as efficiently as possible during work hours and

leaving on time to go home. Time management and prioritizing family is crucial,” Peter said. As business owners, Peter and Deb have two families, one at home and another who are part of a hard working team. “Staff are a major part of our success and we like to treat them like family. We are believers in promoting from within and provide staff with career development if they see this industry as their future. “They are our most important asset. It’s important to surround yourself with people who love the product, believe in the brand and have a passion for delivering outstanding customer service, Peter said. Food tastes better when you realise you’re not only fueling your own body but also someone else in need. Fresh ingredients, packed with nutrition and bursting with flavour; Zambrero is Mexican with a mission for when you get the munchies.

Stels Photography LIZ MORRIS

Photography is an investment in your future memories, moments in time captured and cherished for generations to come. For this reason, Liz Morris ensures each of her clients receive more than just pictures, they are given quality handmade heirlooms so today can be remembered by the generations of tomorrow. Liz is a photographer and the owner of STELS Photography. The family business encompasses a little bit of each of Liz’s family, with the acronym STELS coming from her daughters Sienna and Sharlee, son Toby, Elizabeth (Liz) and her husband Lenny. She primarily shoots from her custom-built, natural light studio, a boutique studio specialising in maternity and newborn sittings as well as glamour, family and weddings. Many of Liz’s clients refer to her as the Baby Whisperer as her calming presence and experience with babies produces breathtaking results. “My one regret in life is not getting professional photographs taken of my first two pregnancies or newborn babies. Thankfully, I did with my third. You don’t realise how quickly that time slips away and I’d give anything to go back and have that time captured in images,” Liz said. Although Liz has had a fascination with photography for as long as she can remember, her passion for photographing newborns was cemented when her third baby was born three weeks early. “He was born with an infection of the bowel and spent three weeks in NICU, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I sat for 20 hours per day for the longest three weeks of my life staring at him and all the other tiny babies in

the NICU, thinking what perfect little miracles they all are. I knew I wanted to capture them like that for their mums and dads to remember.” “New mums and dads are so tired and the first few weeks and months can be a blur. I want to help them always remember the precious moments when that little life first came into the world,” she said. Helping to further preserve this precious time in a family’s life, Liz also owns and operates Bella Impressions, creating two-dimensional sculptures of babies’ hands and feet, mounted in custom-made frames. Completing the package, Liz’s husband, Lenny, owns and operates Whitsunday Picture Framing, allowing Liz to print her photos in-house on fine art and photography paper and quality canvas. “A unique part of my business is that no customer will leave the studio without their favourite images in print form. We package prints into gorgeous wooden keepsake boxes, linen portfolios, albums or exquisite frames. Technology has evolved from rolls of film to USBs.” “The way we store our photos is always changing, but the one constant that never goes out of fashion are high quality prints, framed and passed from generation to generation. I believe this is the difference between a simple photo shoot and an heirloom shoot to be treasured for generations to come,” Liz said. Cherish the little moments in life before they pass you by. It’s often the butt of a joke and can unleash an offensive smell, but no butts about it, your bottom is more valuable to your health and well-being than you may realise. Flat, round, big and small, when it comes to bottoms, Karen Nicholson and Sue Wilson have seem them all.

Karen, an avid horse rider and water skier, has moved from rural Clermont to Mackay to build her new home and business. Karen recently purchased the Mackay and Whitsundays Bottoms Up from Sue and has plenty of plans for added services in its future.

Sue is the founder of Bottoms up Colonics and Cultured Cuisine while Karen is the owner and therapist of Bottoms Up Mackay and Whitsundays, who is also a body ecologist consultant.

“Mackay Bottoms Up has the only Ozone Closed Colonic Device in Australia that is TGA approved, along with all of our other devices and disposable kits. “We have an Ultrasonic 21 day cleanse that allows clients to lose a dress size, while maintaining longer term health,” Karen said. While Karen has taken over Bottoms up Mackay and Whitsundays, Sue is still very involved in Bottoms Up around Australia. She continues to work on developing protocols and practice that helps the community to better understand and utilize this amazing age-old therapy.

Bottoms Up Colonics uses colon hydrotherapy, a safe and effective way to eliminate waste and toxins from the body while stimulating the immune system. The treatments are proving popular. Bottoms Up is now in four locations in Queensland with more opening soon. Its sister company, Cultured Cuisine, provides fermentations and workshops from as far as Bundaberg to far north Queensland. Sue is also preparing to deliver the first ever colon hydrotherapy and gut health conference, to be held on the Gold Coast. As part of her research, she has started the first longer-term pilot study on colonic and microbe diversity; and is speaking at a colon hydrotherapy conference in Spain this September. “What is really unique about all therapists from Bottoms Up is that we are passionate about Poop! We love to see the look on people’s faces as they leave the clinic, not believing what has just passed before their eyes. “We offer great cleansing protocols for ageing well, healing and prevention, plus we can include nutritional and coffee implants to support well-being. People really do reclaim their health,” Sue said.

The colon is a part of our body which doesn’t self-cleanse, yet for greater well-being it is imperative. If you’re wondering about the procedure itself, a closed colonic is not painful, in fact, most clients are surprised at how gentle and noninvasive the treatment is. “Not all bacteria is removed and the procedure cannot perforate the bowel, so it is a safe therapy,” Sue said. Colon hydrotherapy can assist in many ways from restoring balance to helping with depression, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome, among other things. See how much better you can feel when you start from the bottom. Give Bottoms Up a call to arrange a consultation.

Fashion Week Mackay

Fashion Week Mackay kicked off with a bang in 2015, featuring a range of high quality fashion events like no regional city has seen before. A high-end fashion event similar to what you would see in major capital cities. The event was developed to fill a gap in the market, particularly to provide a social opportunity with a lifestyle and fashion focus. Fashion Week Mackay was developed with the aim to showcase the region’s fantastic retail and creative offerings, quality locations and event venues. The committee behind the success of Fashion Week Mackay is comprised of professionals who are passionate about the development of the region as a thriving and creative location. Due to the quality and huge success of the inaugural Fashion Week Mackay last year, this year the committee has secured Mercedes-Benz [ North Jacklin ] as naming rights sponsor for the next three years. This is a huge endorsement for the quality of the event as Mercedes-Benz sponsors major international fashion platforms around the world in cities such as Milan, London, Berlin, Paris and New York. 42 www.corelife.com.au

An undeniable flair for fashion, the name Chetcuti is synonymous with couture. An ambassador for the Mercedes-Benz Mackay Fashion Week for the second year running, Jason Chetcuti shares his story on how a young boy from Mackay created the national costume for Miss Universe Australia 2013 winner, Olivia Wells. At age 15, Jason was already flourishing in fashion. After school, the young Mackay prodigy assisted accomplished dressmaker, Mavis Howell. His skills were honed further by local Italian tailor, Sam Caruana. By age 16, Jason began entering his fashion pieces into competitions and was awarded the coveted Retailers association of Queensland fashion design award. This was just the beginning of what would turn into an exciting and glamourous career. He was invited to study at the prestigious design college, Paris American Academy France. While in Paris, Jason studied the French art of draping, fashion history, colour theory, illustration and garment construction. Blessed with an eye for detail and artistic flair, his creative ability and signature Italian finishing led to him opening a bustling store on Sydney’s fashionable Crown Street, Surry Hills. His brand Chetcuti was now established and he already had a reputation for being one of the country’s in-demand wedding gown designers for the elite clientele of Sydney. After enjoying the elegance of Sydney for 10 years, Jason followed his heart to his hometown of Mackay.

He rose to prominence on the international fashion scene in 2013 when he won the illustrious Miss Universe National Costume Design Competition and was then asked to judge the 2014 event. In 2015, Jason was bestowed the honour of making Tegan Martin’s evening gown for her Sydney launch. Jason’s unique style pushes fashion limits to the extreme while also celebrating time-honoured classics. His discerning taste has led to international notoriety as well as front row invitations to fashion shows in New York, Paris, London and Milan. A long list of celebrities have

TIPS FROM THE MASTER How can you combat Mackay’s humidity while still looking stylish? “Choose a light fabric that doesn’t crush. Find light layers that offer a little bit of movement to create a glamourous silhouette. Accessorise to dress your look up for the evening. Look for resort wear ranges which are tailored for a tropical climate.” What are the must-have fashion pieces everyone should have? “For him, invest in quality classics. Bone chinos, a crisp white coordinate and a navy jacket. You can then intermix other colours or patterns which are on trend through accessories.” Why commission a designer for a specific piece? “When a garment is designed and crafted by someone with refined skills, the result will be quality. The unique figure of an individual must be considered, as well as every single nuance of the body. When this is achieved the outcome will be superb and the garment produced will not only look superior, but it will move and feel in perfect alignment with the body. “Garments that are crafted to a person’s specific requirements are so special and exclusive. The quality is second to none and you can be assured you will be the only person with that design.”

donned his garments, but despite mingling with some of the world’s fashion elite, Jason has remained humble and down to earth. Jason will be attending all of the Mercedes-Benz Mackay Fashion Week events and encourages anyone who would like to meet him to introduce themselves. “Fashion is freedom. It is unique, beautiful and innovative.” “Through fashion, we can depict the way we feel and create a certain look by what we choose to wear. Fashion is a means of self-expression. It is a unique fingerprint which can speak volumes about our character, the persona we want to create, the story we wish to tell.” “I love helping people to invent their unique identity and creating a superb fitting garment that gives my clients confidence and makes them feel their very best.” Jason Chetcuti

Being a caring, loving husband to my gorgeous wife and father to our two beautiful sons; that is where true happiness comes from.” Yehia El-Baky finds delight in his work, by seeing the art which flourishes through technique. He moved to the Whitsundays in 2000 and started a family business, 121 Medical Centre. He is a general practitioner who developed a passion for the art and skill it requires to be a cosmetic physician. In 2006 he opened 121 CosMedical Clinic and is fascinated by the advancement of treatments he is able to offer his clients. “Each artist uses a medium which best suits the need; like wood, stone, clay or canvas. In non-invasive skin rejuvenation and face art, the medium is quite unique, since it is alive and differs from one person to another. Skin is a miracle of delicacy and suppleness. It is much more than a canvas; it is a link between the person and the outside world.” “I am pleased to be highly regarded for my experience in delivering natural-looking results, drawing from my sense of artistic appreciation and commitment to client care,” Yehia said. What is the best part about being a cosmetic physician? “It has always been my belief that we are all born beautiful. It is all about harmonisation of outer appearance and inner state of mind. The physical and psychological are inextricably linked and whoever changes one, inevitably changes the other.” What do you do to keep yourself grounded while juggling the workload of two businesses? “I make an effort every evening to come home from work before dinner and spend time with my family without thinking about, or doing any, work. At the weekend, I de-stress and re-energise myself by doing hobbies, gardening and walking.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world”

“Our team will always put you first. We place a huge emphasis on health, well-being and individual goals rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.” Melissa Christensen and her husband, David, were drawn to the fitness industry after making significant lifestyle changes in 2011. After many years in management and customer service positions, they began to search for the perfect family business which would complement their healthier lifestyle. That opportunity presented itself in August last year, when the couple saw Mass Nutrition Mackay for sale. “We eventually took over the reins in February this year and haven’t looked back. Meeting others that share our passion makes every day enjoyable and satisfying,” Melissa said. In addition to supplying supplements and natural health products to enhance people’s performance and well-being, Mass Nutrition provides advice and on-going support to help with motivation. “Each person’s journey to wellness or achieving fitness aspirations is different, so no matter if someone is just starting out, or if someone is a pro, we’re here to help make their goals that bit easier to achieve,” Melissa said.

Originally from the beautiful Hawkesbury region in NSW, home of agriculture, water skiing and a region renowned as being Sydney’s fruit bowl, Karen Vloedmans sees many parallels between her life growing up, to the town she now proudly calls home, Proserpine. “At the heart and soul of both towns are farming and small business. All made up of good, hard-working people,” she said. Karen is the Business Services and Secretary for the Proserpine Chamber of Commerce (PCOC), a position which led to winning Proserpine’s 2015 Community Champion award. When Karen started as the PCOC’s secretary, membership numbers were at six. Now, they stand at more than 100. “Our core goal is to present and share opportunities that will aid the growth of all local business. The PCOC provides a wonderful opportunity for local businesses to network and strengthen relationships through monthly meetings, breakfasts and networking events.” What can we find you doing on the weekend? “Weekends are family time. I’m happily married to Brad and we are blessed with two wonderful children, Mia and Zac. Some of our favourite things to do are to go fishing, have a campfire and star gaze and cook together utilising fresh produce from our veggie garden.” What have you ticked off your bucket list? “I love the outdoors, two memorable moments ticked off are sunset at Cable Beach, Broome in WA and sunrise at Waikiki Beach, Honolulu.” Have you ever met anyone famous? “With a background in hotels and event management I have met a lot of famous people. In the first hotel I worked at in Sydney some 23 years ago, I met Russell Crowe and the whole cast of Jesus Christ Superstar in the same week, some of which included Jon Stevens, Deni Hines and the late Jon English.”

What do you enjoy doing to take timeout from your new career? “Being new in business, weekends are mainly spent catching up on household chores and going to the gym. I’m looking forward to getting away with the family again, camping. Nothing is more relaxing than sitting around a campfire.” What are some of the toughest fitness challenges you have faced? “I’ve completed two Tough Mudders and have climbed Uluru.” What is one of your standout vacation moments? “I’ve been blessed to have experienced so many amazing trips with my family it’s hard to pick just one! A standout memory was travelling to Uluru (Ayers Rock) in 2009 and being overwhelmed by the sheer size and beauty. Climbing the ‘Rock’ with my kids was prettywww.corelife.com.au damn incredible!” 3

SEEKING NEW GOALS

Kaz O’Brien

THE BIKINI, HIGH HEELS AND POSING; IT DOESN’T COME EASY, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU’RE MORE OF A RUNNING SHOES KIND OF WOMAN. BUT EVEN TOUGHER THAN THE COMPETITION AND RELENTLESS TRAINING, IS THE STIGMA THAT COMES WITH SUCCESS. A few years ago, Kaz O’Brien decided to change the direction of her career. She was inspired to do something to better her health, so when her children were old enough, she studied to obtain her Level Three Certificate in Fitness and became a personal trainer. Two years later, she studied for her Level Four Certificate. As well as teaching group fitness classes, Kaz has her own personal training business, KO Fitness; providing one-on-one sessions, small group training and fitness programs. Always striving for her next challenge, Kaz competed in a Tough Mudder and fell in love with running. “The process is in the journey and I’m forever goal setting. After I had ticked off a half marathon, I began searching for the next challenge,” she said. Kaz began training for figure competing. Knowing herself that success comes from accountability, she invested in trainers, Gavin Heward and Ella Ware to give her the guidance she would need to become competition ready. Her supplement advice and support came from Mass Nutrition. “You make a lot of sacrifices for this sport, especially when it comes to family time and special occasions. I’m lucky to have such a supportive husband and great kids. I was prepared for those sacrifices, but what took me most by surprise was the stigma and comments I received from both friends and people who don’t even know me.” “People have actually come up to me to tell me they don’t like the way I look because of my muscle definition. For me, it’s not important what people think about the way I look, it’s about how it makes me feel. I love this sport,” Kaz said. Within the sport itself, Kaz has found a world of support and motivation. “Behind the scenes, I’ve found my competition to be complimentary and supportive. The bikinis, they aren’t comfortable. The poses, they are much harder than they look! Through the smile you’re gritting your teeth, shaking and sweating. There’s a lot more to the sport than people realise,” Kaz said. Her trainer, Ella, describes how Kaz’s success has resulted from meticulous training and sheer determination to succeed. “Kaz doesn’t let anything get in the way of her training. She’s very strict on herself and gives everything and more to the sport. She’s a mum with two children but never gives excuses for not being able to train.” “During her off-season, Kaz worked hard on building muscle before implementing a longer shred time. Her determination paid off. She has an incredible physique which looks fantastic on-stage and her personality and showmanship really shines.” “She works really hard for her results. She’s one of the most focused and determined people I know and it shows when she is competing. I’m excited to see how far she can progress,” Ella said. Photo courtesy of Jason Cattermole

Kaz has completed her second season of competition and achieved excellent results. She took out a first place at Australasian Natural Bodybuilding’s (ANB) Mackay competition and achieved a second placing in ANB Townsville, along with a ‘best poser’ award. She then went to the ANB Asia Pacific International on the Gold Coast in June, and came away with a first and two fourths. Her win resulted in being selected as part of the Natural Bodz team to represent Australia in Las Vegas later this year. With more women taking part in figure fitness each year, it is becoming one of the fastestgrowing sports worldwide. It’s time to break the stigma and respect the dedication and strength the sport represents.

Best of luck in Vegas Kaz. We know you will do us all proud!

But there are challenges even the master himself is yet to face. As he lined up on the glistening sand of Whitehaven beach, Steve Moneghetti was about to run his first 10km race on sand at the Great Whitehaven Beach Run. Core Magazines, Amanda Wright, caught up with Steve to ask about his preparation, training and how to run a faster race. ADAM AND EVE HAIR ARTIST : Amie Chalmers MAKE UP ARTIST : Joanne Dromgold

With the latest styles, high-quality products and a passion for what we do, you’re sure to have a truly revolutionary experience.

BEFORE

Katie visited me in the salon full of excitement, ready for a change, a makeover. After having exactly the same hair her entire life, Katie left it all in my capable hands to give her the dramatic change she desired. 1. The Colour Maximizing Katie’s sultry ‘girl next door’ persona, eliminating frizz and brightening Katie up was the end goal that I had for her makeover. Katie had been colouring her hair dark and one colour for many years. We still wanted a high fashion colour to stand her out from the crowd but without being too time consuming for Katie’s busy schedule. So, a bright, block colour was the elucidation. I softly lightened Katie’s hair to the desired level. By going through the lightening process softly and slowly with high quality Wella Profesional products, I still maintained to keep the integrity of her hair. Once I was happy with the pre-lightened result, I applied a beautiful, rich, shiny and intense Wella copper colour. This rich copper colour on Katie brings out her stunning and now piercing blue eyes. They are now almost as striking as this beautiful hair colour which compliments her flawless ivory skin and strong cheekbones. I am extremely happy with my experience at Adam and Eve. Amie and the girls made me feel at ease and comfortable immediately after walking in. The salon itself, in which you can tell Amie has worked very hard toward, is a happy and warm environment with a modern and boutique feel. Initially, I was a little nervous of such a dramatic change, but now I couldn’t be happier. I am so grateful for the work Amie has produced. I feel like a different person only in the most positive way possible. If you’re looking for a change, Amie Chalmers is your go to girl. I’m loving life on the copper side! - Katie Morris

2. Finishing After a light trim, I applied Wella’s Eimi Perfect Me and Root Shoot into Katie’s damp hair. Perfect Me is the leave in treatment all rounder’. It combats frizz while leaving the hair feeling nourished and radiating shine. Root Shoot is a spray mousse that is best targeted into the root area on each section before blowdrying. It incorporates volume into her style while also helping hold the movement I put in with a large round brush. With such fine hair like Katie’s, it is best to use high quality care and styling products to get the best result. Once Katie’s hair was smooth and voluminous, I curled each section with a GHD off base to leave body at the roots but add a smooth and soft wave through the ends.

MAC, followed by a deep brown eyeliner from Urban Decay. I applied a small amount of Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder to the brows and finished the eyes with Model Rock Lashes. I framed Katie’s face using Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess and highlighted her fantastic cheek bones using the Jaclyn Hill for BECCA palette. To finish, I lined Katie’s lips using a MAC lip liner and coated the lips in a deep Model Rock Liquid Last - Liquid to Matte Lipstick colour.

AFTER

To finish, I sprayed a fine mist of Luxe Oil Light Oil for more shine and a light spray of Sebastian Reshaper to hold the style while still having a soft finish.

3. Make Up To start, I moisturized and primed Katie’s skin to hydrate and plump. Katie likes a full coverage so, to give her a flawless base, I used Estée Lauder Double Wear Light in two shades to give dimension to the face, MAC concealer to brighten under the eyes and to set, Napoleon Camera Finish Powder. To emphasize Katie’s amazing blue eyes, and compliment Amie’s stunning hair transformation, I used several warm toned rust coloured eyeshadows by

Cosmetic Tattooing By Elise Scott Eyebrow sculpting and cosmetic tattooing has been gaining popularity with women fashion and style for years. With many different shaping and tattooing techniques at Makeup Beauty Bar, Elise has a passion to bring ladies brows back to

With many clients and high demand for Elise’s talent, there aren’t any two faces the same, as it’s always said, brows aren’t twins, they’re sisters. With Elise’s makeup artistry, brow sculpting and having a fine eye for detail, she has combined these skills to offer the best results. Many women have been given the old technique of the block brow that has left them with green or pink brows, since then cosmetic tattooing has come a long way and is more advance with pigments and technique specifically made for brow tattooing. With the new techniques used for eyebrow cosmetic tattooing, brows are more natural looking and semi permanent. With brows fading naturally over time, you won’t be stuck with a discoloured effect, keeping the brows shaped and with natural hair strokes through a feathering technique, called microblading or powder technique, creating a more defined and fuller brow. The average brow span is 12 months to 2 years, it really depends on the client, skin type and how they continue to look after the brows post procedure. With cosmetically tattooed brows, women can continue their busy active lives without the hassle of continuously adding time to their beauty routine. Waking up with beautifully shaped brows will give you confidence and a fresh face from the start of your day.

With many different face shapes and features using a different range of techniques will create the best results. There isn’t a brow Elise can’t perfect. She will determine the shape, brow arch and lines to suit your face shape.

life and that best compliment their features.

I have always wanted to get my eyebrows cosmetically tattooed, but have been terrified by the thought of what if something goes wrong or what if I hate it? It’s a tattoo and it’s not like I can change it once it’s done. My greatest fear was the fake solid/block look and it was this fear that always got the better of me. After many conversations with other people who have had the procedure and seeing first hand the results, there was one piece of advice that kept coming up over and over again. “If you want to get it done, you need to see the eyebrow guru and she is located in Airlie Beach!” So I finally got the courage to give Elise a call and I am so glad I did. I knew from the moment I spoke to her that she knew all there was to know about creating the perfect result and shape for me. I made an appointment and the next day it was going to happen. An hour after I walked into her clinic and, with my detailed care instructions in hand, I walked out feeling excited and overwhelmed at how amazing my eyebrows looked! It was, without a doubt, the result I was longing for. Not only have I saved so much money in ongoing and time consuming waxing, I finally had the perfect shape and colouring that waxing could never give me. If you have been thinking about getting this procedure, I would, without hesitation, recommend you give Elise a call today!

I was pretty nervous about getting IPL. I wanted IPL because I am not someone who makes time to shave my legs until I’m wearing a dress and heading out for the night! I also get pretty bad in grown hairs. It’s always nerve racking having someone inspect your flaws up close, but I didn’t feel that way with Sarah at all.

I work big days and have a pretty hectic schedule too, however Sarah is very accommodating and let me come in on a Sunday for my first treatment. She also stays late so I can come in after I have done everything I need to in a day!

I have had 4 treatments so far and the results are really impressive! I have much less hair, my in grown I mentioned that I was considering IPL hairs have improved in leaps and and Sarah set up a time just for me to bounds as well as scarring I had from previous ingrown hairs. have a chat about it, an opportunity for me to ask any questions and get I would highly recommend IPL, and an idea about cost, another reason I Sarah. Sensorium Skin Technology was nervous. is a locally owned and operated dermal therapy clinic, right here in Sarah offered me a package with Cannonvale. Happy days. a payment plan, which made it so much easier to budget and afford the treatments.

FIVE FACTS… • • • • •

Most people need 6-12 treatments to obtain permanent reduction. Treatments are scheduled at 8 week intervals Waxing is a contraindication to IPL permanent hair reduction. So STOP now! IPL is great value for money when you consider the cost of waxing forever. IPL packages save you a stack of cash! Treating multiple areas at once is better value than individual areas. e.g. Brazilian and underarms are complimentary with leg treatments.

Should have gone to

SPECSAVERS CANNONVALE A day without sunscreen and the damage is obvious. Red skin, blisters as well as pain and discomfort. But what happens when you forget your sunglasses? Your eyes can become damaged from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which in extreme cases, can lead to the development of ocular surface tumours. In the Whitsundays we are blessed with an abundance of sunshine hours and sparkling turquoise water. However too much exposure to the sun’s UV radiation, without adequate eye protection, can cause lasting damage.

For all you see and do, the team at Specsavers Cannonvale are dedicated to providing the best in eye care to the community. With two full time optometrists, eyesight tests are available every day of the week, even Sunday. Same-day appointments are usually possible and the team can also accommodate emergency appointments. Specsavers Cannonvale partner and optometrist, Fiona Barrett, has been practicing optometry for 14 years, giving her a wide range of experience and knowledge of many ocular disorders. She recently completed her Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics, giving her the ability to treat some conditions. Annie Lee is Specsavers Cannonvale’s newest optometrist. As a recent graduate from QUT, Annie is highly knowledgeable in the latest technology and developments in ocular care as well as being a skilled clinician. The team at Specsavers Cannonvale understand that providing highly skilled optometrists is one thing, but affordability is also important to give the wider community easy access to advanced eye care. “We provide bulk-billed sight tests to anyone with a valid Medicare card and free digital retinal photography to everyone. We also offer free contact lens trials to all suitable patients. We can provide a wide range of services including diabetic screenings and glaucoma eye care,” Fiona said. Long gone are the days of ‘geeky glasses’. Rather, a sophisticated pair of specs is such a sought-after fashion accessory that even those

with perfect eyesight are wearing them with non-corrective lenses. Top fashion designers have recognised the trend and many now develop their own luxury lines of frames. Two of the exciting designer ranges new to Specsavers are Ellery and Gant. For the ladies, Kym Ellery’s keen eye and avant-garde inspiration has translated into her label ELLERY; a sophisticated signature style, brought to life through an exploration of shapes including cat eyes, modern classics and bold oversized frames. For the men, GANT is a brand rich in legacy and history. The brand’s detailed craftsmanship and effortless American style are reflected in this new range of glasses. Best of all, these designer brands are more affordable than you may realise, as Laura Goodridge, retail partner of Specsavers Cannonvale explains. “We have a massive range of frames to choose from, more than 1300! We have options for children and extensive designer lines; so, no matter your face shape or fashion preference, we have frames to enhance every lifestyle. Many of our designer brands are available at our incredible price of $199 for two pairs of single-vision specs. We are a preferred provider for all the major health funds which means that most people can receive two pairs of specs with no gap to pay.” Enjoy life in full focus. What a safe level of noise and are some noises more damaging than others? Noise levels are measured in units called dBA, which takes into the account the anatomy and physiology of the human ear to attenuate sounds in the speech areas which range from 250Hz to 8000 Hz. General conversation levels are around 65dB and a safe level for noise exposure is 85dBA for 8 hours. For every 3 dB over 85dBA that you are exposed to halves the amount of time in which can be safely spent. For example 88 dBA is 4 hours safely. 91dBA is 2 hours safely. 94dBA is 1 hour safely and so on. Of course the further away from the noise the lower the dBA levels are and longer the period of time that can be spent in the noise. Engines and motor noise are particularly deceptive with the amount of damaging noise they produce. People mistakenly think that short sharp loud bursts of high pitched noise such as

“...by far the more dangerous and common noises to damage the ear are constant low pitched machinery and motor noises...”

The reason for this is that human ear is tuned to focus on sounds which are within the human speech range which is generally mid-high pitched sounds. For example two sounds, a low pitched sound, and a high pitched sound can be exactly the same volume yet perceptually to the human listener the higher pitched sound will seem louder. This is why TV ads seem so much louder. The overall sound level is the same but they reduce the output of the low pitched sounds that our ears don’t attune to and increase the higher pitched sounds so perceptually it seems louder even though the overall output is unchanged.

rifles, hammering, loud drums or music, and even nail guns do the most damage to your hearing as they create the largest amount of discomfort to the ear. Although they most certainly do cause damage to the ear, by far the more dangerous and common noises to damage the ear are constant low pitched machinery and motor noises which seem much softer to us and do not cause as much discomfort so we are less inclined to use hearing protection and limit our exposure to them.

Cleansing Lymphatic

We have more lymphatic fluid than blood, you probably at times in your life have felt a lymph node swell either under your arm or in your groin and, maybe, not thought too much more about it. “The lymphatic system is a network of tubes throughout the body that drains fluid (called lymph) from tissues and empties it back into the bloodstream. The main roles of the lymphatic system include managing the fluid levels in the body, filtering out bacteria and housing types of white blood cells. The lymph fluid is filtered through the spleen, thymus and lymph nodes before being emptied into the blood.” betterhealth. vic.gov. When our body becomes too toxic and can’t get rid of these toxins, it will wrap them up inside our fat as a way of protecting you from toxic over load. This is often why when you go on a diet you will initially loose weight. However on return to your normal eating the weight creeps back on. You haven’t removed the toxins, your body is unwell and it is endeavouring to keep you well.

Cleansing parasites and bad yeasts like candida with Ozone Medical ozone therapy increases the effectiveness of white blood cells, the body’s immunity builders. It also increases the flexibility and elasticity of red blood cells, improving circulation. Medical ozone oxidizes arterial plaque, causing it to break down. It degrades many of the toxic environmental chemicals that have a very detrimental effect on the immune system. Ozone has been reported and used effectively for over 100 years to effectively stimulate detoxification, reduce lactic acid accumulation, eliminate pain, resolve chronic viral infections such as hepatitis and herpes, increase energy, treat auto-immune diseases, treat interstitial cystitis, resolve macular degeneration and even slow down aging. www.OzoneUniversity.com | Written By Shelby Molchan, CCH

Closed Colonic Hydrotherapy Closed Colonic Hydrotherapy is being understood more and more as the most effective cleansing protocol you can use. I would also say that to cleanse and not use colon hydrotherapy is only putting your self at risk for further autointoxication. Bottoms Up Colonics has over more than the past ten years helped people recover from cancer, reverse type 2 diabetes, saved people from having their bowel removed, stopped bloating gas, bad breath, body odor, loosing toxic weight and over all feeling “sick”. We have a proven system and, now, adding in our lymphatic and ozone as part of our treatments combined with our cleansing and probiotic rich nutritional programs, you know you will experience long term results.

Laser Therapy for Fungal Nails What is fungal nail disease? Affecting 10% of the population, fungal nails or onychomycosis (OM) is a persistent fungal infection of the nail bed and nailplate. Signs of fungal nail infection include yellow discolouration of the nails, rougher ridges and crumbling of the nail. Nail fungus can be very difficult to treat and patients often become frustrated with the lack of progress.

Don’t waste time with paint-on treatments. Treat fungal nails once and for all with our revolutionary laser treatment.

How we treat fungal nails? At Balance Podiatry, our podiatrists are highly trained laser technicians. For most infections you will require 2-3 treatments to treat the condition. We recommend a follow up appointment to ensure there’s no further infection.

Studies show that 95%* of patients are cured of fungal nail disease after two laser treatments. *Source: Novel Laser Therapy Treatment on Onychomycosis, Journal of the Laser and Health Acadamy 2010.

WHAT IF YOU COULD FEEL BETTER IN

DAYS?

Finding balance in our lives depend on a few fundamental principles such as feeling healthy, happy and making a difference around us. One area in our hands is what foods to eat. It seems such an obvious thing to say but many of us simply become too confused to think about our diets. Nutrition science is the new buzzword all around the world and is now being embraced by psychiatrists, cardiologists and other practitioners in many fields. A simple way to look at diet is to ask ourselves “how do I feel after this meal?” If your brain is constantly foggy, your energy levels low, your sleep is erratic and not restoring, along with regular exercise and mindfulness practices, tuning your eating habits to show your mind, body and soul that you care about yourself and your family is a fantastic step. GOLDEN RULES FOR A LONGER LIFE THROUGH NUTRITION INCLUDE: • Avoiding refined carbohydrates such as bread, cakes and candies. • Eating small portions of protein at every meal including breakfast (fish, eggs, nuts and seeds, different cuts and variety of meats) • Eating regularly, but not in large amounts, to avoid blood glucose spiking. • Using oils high in Omega 3 (Fish oil, Flaxseed oil) as supplements, organic olive oil for salads and coconut oil or Ghee for cooking. • Eating all the colours of the rainbow on your plate to make your vegetables and fruits taste even better and to increase your fibre intake. • Drinking plenty of water. Hippocrates famously said “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food” Become an active participant in your health, happiness and inspire others around you in the next 30 days. When nutritional deficiencies have been present for a long period it is worth consulting a health practitioner with a special interest in nutrition for professional support and personal targeted supplementation. www.corelife.com.au Dr Karen Prince-Popovich D.O. FAMILY! It’s Important...

important role in making sure children are ready to learn when they enter school. Children flourish when parents are able to actively promote the positive growth and development of their children. Early family relationships have been shown to have an impact on a child’s cognitive ability, social and emotional development, health and wellbeing and involvement in society in general. Families are where the most important prevention and early intervention occurs. The importance of the early years of life on adolescent and adult life is evident in a plethora of research documents that have investigated and reported on the outcomes. We also know that while quality early childhood education is important in boosting the developmental outcomes of children, early childhood education alone is insufficient; child wellbeing and development is an interdisciplinary job. Advocates of early childhood education acknowledge that despite positive early childhood education and care experiences, the effects of positive parenting are about double that of the impact of school. However, the evidence from large-scale studies show while we need to pay attention to a combination of the home and family environment, quality kindergarten, and good primary schooling, the home environment and family matters even more.

Safe Step into Year Seven

Family is the single most important influence in a child’s life. From their first moments of life, children depend on parents and family to protect them and provide for their needs. Parents and family form a child’s first relationships; they are a child’s first teachers and act as role models in how to act, how to self-regulate and how to experience the world around them. Through nurturing and teaching children during their early years, parents and families play an

Bright Future St Catherine’s Catholic College use their college values of Excellence, Justice, Compassion and Community to inspire and guide the aspirations of their students.

Situated in the beautiful Whitsundays, St Catherine’s Catholic College consists of three campuses, Mercy Campus (Prep to Year 3), Loyola Campus (Year 4 - 6) and Manresa Campus (Year 7 - 11). The College has dedicated precincts for each stage of schooling and students are provided with an education that focuses on more than academic results. The college is very excited about its future expansion as Kindergarten and Year 12 studies will be introduced in 2017. This means that more children will be part of the college which draws its inspiration from the work of St Ignatius, who encourages students to think deeply and to challenge themselves to change the world for the better. A broad curriculum is offered at St Catherine’s Catholic College and students have the opportunity to study a diverse range of subjects which are complimented by extensive extracurricular opportunities. The many extracurricular activities include STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), Coding, Science, Reading, Art, Drama, Instrumental Music, Wood and Metal Work clubs. St Catherine’s Catholic College has been the winning school of the Aurecon Bridge Building competition for the third consecutive year in a row. The competition is open to Year 8 and 9 students in Australia and raises awareness of the engineering profession among students. Another great achievement for the school included becoming State Finalists in the Opti-MINDS competition, an inclusive team challenge which empowers participants to think, create and communicate.

Teachers and students at St Catherine’s Catholic College are proud of their involvement in many community events throughout the year and invite community members to be part of the College events. Eco Challenge, Indigenous School Community Partnerships, Relay for Life, National Tree Day, Whitsunday Literary Festival, Mulkadee, Whitsunday Reef Festival and Vinnies Sleep out are some of the events the college participates in. Bus transfers are available with Whitsunday Transit & Shuttle Service, while Bowen Transit also offers a service to take eligible students who reside in Bowen to and from the College. 4 DAYS 18 STAGES and 74 BANDS

Howzat?! A music festival is the ultimate holiday experience, and what better place to lap up the energy of worldclass entertainment than the buzzing beachfront nirvana of Airlie Beach. The Airlie Beach Music Festival is a four day extravaganza featuring an eclectic mix of genres; from hip-hop and reggae to country and classic rock. With top international acts and Aussie icons, the festival comes alive across a range of Airlie Beach venues, 18 stages to be exact, where you can hop from party to party and feed off the energy of your fellow fans. One of the title performers to watch out for is classic Aussie legend, Daryl Braithwaite. Daryl first found fame as part of the 70’s band, Sherbet, the first Australian band to top the $1million mark in album sales. Arguably their most popular single, ‘Howzat’ was not only a hit in Australia, but also in England and America. Daryl won the Australian King of Pop award three times. As a solo artist, Daryl produced popular

albums, Edge and Rise; producing phenomenally successful singles including One Summer and The Horses. Both hits held the #1 position on the national charts for many consecutive weeks. The Horses was then voted ‘Australian Song of the year’ at the 1991 Australian Music Awards. Currently touring Australia, the Airlie beach Music Festival is one of the many destinations Daryl will be playing, up until April, 2017. After that, he hopes to take a holiday and fill his life with new inspiration to work on some new music. “We’re driven by the fact that we love it. It’s a big tour we are on, but we have a lot of fun,” he said. Daryl’s most memorable performance created a turning point in his career and has changed both his persona and energy on stage. In 2005, as he stood backstage at the Floreat Hotel in Perth, he heard the crowd start to chant his name. “We'd come from an outdoor gig with Mental As Anything earlier that day. I could hear them chanting, “Daryl, Daryl,” and I

thought, ‘have they come to the right gig?’ They were a bunch of Uni students who had donated weeks of their time to charity and this was their reunion,” he said. He had recently been given the Green Day DVD, Bullet in a Bible, by his son Oscar and had been inspired by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. “That night I harnessed all the energy I could muster and was lifted by those students. They sang The Horses with so much enthusiasm. It’s a moment I’ll never forget. It was just sensational and changed the way I perform now,” he said. Daryl is looking forward to rocking with Airlie Beach this November and is hoping to extend his trip by an additional day so he can experience the beauty of Whitehaven Beach. Tickets are available through the Airlie Beach Festival of Music website prompt to the BigTix link www. airliebeachfestivalofmusic.bigtix.com.au/ and at the Mackay Entertainment Convention Centre on 07 4961 9777 and www.mackaytix.com.au.

Something you might not know about Daryl Daryl used to be classmates with Olivia Newton-John at Christ Church Grammar School in South Yarra, they even sang in the choir together!
