Editor’s Note... AM I REALLY A SOCCER MUM? SORRY A FOOTBALL MUM? YES, I AM COMPETITIVE BUT IS THAT SO BAD? When I was growing up, it didn’t matter if we were playing a team sport or competing at the school sports carnival, we had to work and train hard to earn our place on the team or for the ribbons we would win. We learnt quickly what it meant to win and, more importantly, how to lose! Do I believe every child should be given an opportunity? Yes I do, however what is an opportunity if you don’t learn from it? Being competitive and teaching your kids to be competitive gives them an opportunity to learn and to grow. A desire to want to do better and to understand that, like anything in life, if you really want it, you have to work for it. When I say competitive, I don’t mean the crazy kind! I’m talking about tuff love. The kind of competitive that will encourage and inspire your child to “want” to do better and give 100% all of the time. To be accountable for his or her actions and to understand what being a team player is all about. Playing sport as a child, and learning how to be competitive, has taught me so many life lessons. I can find the strength to push through, when all I want to do is give up. I know what it is like to lose, and how to do it gracefully. I also know what it is like to win, and how amazing it feels. I know how to give my all, and still play by the rules. I also know that coming first or winning, like reaching any goal in life, isn’t what truly matters. It’s the journey you take to get there. The friendships you have made and the memories you will keep that matter. It’s knowing you gave 100%. No matter what path your kids take, there will always be competition, so teach them to be competitive and that, no matter the outcome, they are, and always will be, a winner in your eyes!

WHERE IS YOUR CHILDHOOD HOME AND WHAT ARE YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES OF IT?
Our place was always home to strange pets. Emus, kangaroos and goats were just the start to our menagerie
I grew up in Weethalle, a tiny town in central west NSW. With population roughly 100, it’s safe to say I grew up knowing just about everyone. As a kid I spent most of my time outdoors riding motorbikes, swimming and playing with pets. Our place was always home to strange pets. Emus, kangaroos and goats were just the start to our menagerie. My family of five lived in a small yellow bricked home which was never so bad because winter time gets pretty frosty and our wood fire worked perfectly to the size of our house. Home to me is so much more than the yellow bricked house I lived in. To me, home was the town I grew up in. I have very fond memories of Weethalle. My fondest being times I spent with family and friends. I am so grateful to have grown up in such a great little community.

Whenever I smell roasted chestnuts it reminds me of home!
My childhood home is Bournemouth, which is on the south coast in the UK. My fondest memory has to be Christmas time, I remember being all rugged up (as it is freezing that time of year), walking down the brightly decorated high street, every shop you go into is decorated beautifully for Christmas! Whenever I smell roasted chestnuts it reminds me of home! Christmas is a magical time of year, it was super cold, you have the central heating on and layers and layers of clothes!!
The bond created between family and friends has been unbreakable since
My childhood home was in Quezon City, Philippines, up to when I was twelve years old. My fondest memories from my home would have to be the day before we moved here to Australia. My friends and family threw a surprise farewell party for my siblings (they woke us up in the middle of the night), and we got to enjoy the company of all of our friends. They gave us presents to keep to remember them, and they looked back at the times we were all together. The bond created between family and friends has been unbreakable since. It’s been about 6 years since I’ve seen them, and it’s still one of my fondest memories from my childhood home.

20 Years
of saving lives
TWENTY-FOUR HOURS PER DAY, 365 DAYS PER YEAR, THEY ARE READY. Ready to fly to the rescue of those who are clinging to life. When we need them, they are our best chance of survival. They say that you can’t put a price on life, but the reality is, operating costs for the Mackay-based RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter service in 2016 will be $8.3 million. 2015 was the biggest year on record for RACQ CQ Rescue, with the crew attending to 518 tasks, flying 873.24 engine hours to help save lives. That’s an average of around 1.5 tasks every day. Unfortunately, 2016 is shaping up to be RAQC CQ Rescue’s biggest yet, but this year is also the organisation’s toughest, with many organisations forced to substantially reduce their contribution to the community-funded rescue helicopter service. Now they are reaching out to us, the community, to help save them. To keep them in the air so they can continue to rescue those we love.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Your donation to the 2016 RACQ CQ Rescue Annual Appeal can help this community-based rescue helicopter service be the difference between life and death in a time of crisis. Another option is workplace giving each week through your payroll. While it might be easy to think $2 or $5 each week wouldn’t make much difference, you could not be more wrong. If every person in our region donated as little as $2 per week, 52 weeks per year, it would amount to more than RACQ CQ Rescue need to operate the rescue service for a year. Don’t forget, your donation is tax deductable.
SAVING LIVES FOR TWO DECADES
Our community-funded rescue helicopter service has been this region’s lifeline in your time of need, winching, rescuing and transferring almost 7000 patients in its 20-year history. For two decades, RACQ CQ Rescue
has been assisting those in dire need. It has grown from very humble beginnings to become a well-respected, world-class organisation and an integral part of emergency services across this region. 1992 - A horrific car crash near Lake Elphinstone highlighted the urgent need for a rescue helicopter in the region. The assistance of a helicopter from Mount Isa Mines helped save the lives of those injured in that accident. In November 1994, a public meeting was held to demonstrate the need for an airborne rescue medical retrieval service. In 1995, the service is challenged with raising $300,000 which was matched by the Queensland government. The Cook Family Trust donated $500,000 over five years. In 1996, the trading name of CQ RESQ was registered and the first premises, two dongas and a quarter of a shared hangar at Casey Drive, Mackay Airport, opened. The first helicopter was a Bell Longranger 206 (VH-LHP). On Aug. 27, 1996, Dr Bert Sadlier was helping fit out the not-yetcommissioned helicopter and deciding with colleagues where the stretcher should go in CQ RESQ’s Bell Longranger when the emergency call came in. A guest on Hayman Island was critically unwell with a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Time was of the essence. Her life depended upon it. There have been almost 7000 mercy flights since that very first task 20 years ago and a wide range of incredibly challenging situations and difficult environments faced by both crew and medical staff every day.

1300 Saving Lives (1300 728 464)
“I’ve wanted to do this all of my life”
The future of RACQ CQ Rescue “I’ve wanted to do this all of my life.” He’s already been challenged, pushed to the limit and has had to face fear head-on, but Arno “AJ” Schoonwinkel knows that this is only the beginning of an intense training schedule. AJ, along with fellow cadet rescue crewman, Callum Good, stood out from more than 200 applicants to become RACQ CQ Rescue’s most recent recruits. While vertical heights and being winched onto a moving boat have been challenging new experiences for AJ, saving lives comes as second-nature for him after years of patrolling Mackay’s beaches as a senior lifeguard. After a weeklong course with Australian Helicopters, AJ and Callum now get to shadow senior crewman to watch the training put into action the next time the crew are called to an emergency. “We did various rescue drills using winches on dry land, over the water and at night. It’s an intense feeling to clip on to the winch and launch from the helicopter for the first time.” “We are also trained in how to assess each situation; what gear do we use, what is the next step. You’re constantly assessing the rescue and making decisions that both the patients and the crew rely on to ensure everyone comes home safely,” AJ said. Originally from South Africa, AJ moved to Australia nine years ago with his family. He looks at this opportunity as a way to give back to the community. “There’s no greater feeling than knowing that you’re giving back to the community. I get to help save lives, to do my part, to do my best.”

“We are someone’s best chance of survival” Protecting our liberties and keeping fellow soldiers safe on the ground, pilot, Doug White, served in ‘C’ Squadron in the Australian Army’s 5th Aviation Regiment and completed four tours in Afghanistan. The Mackay-based RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter pilot began his flying career at the Royal Military College, Duntroon; highly regarded for training the best of the best in the Australian Army. After postings in Tamworth, Oakey and Darwin; Doug was part of an elite group of pilots who were based in Townsville, chosen to fly Chinook helicopters for Operation Slipper. The operation commenced in 2006 and lasted until 2013, flying almost nonstop, to support ground troops in hot land zones and resupply isolated mountain outposts. “It’s an incredible place to fly. The contrast of the land is striking; from jagged mountains and lush valleys to vast deserts. We pushed the Chinooks to their limits but what makes them incredible machines is their ability to handle the heat, the cold, high altitude and dust. “Sitting in the cockpit, flying a Chinook and hearing the crack/thump of machine-gun rounds aimed at you over the noise of the aircraft really gets your heart racing,” Doug said. After returning from deployment in 2013, Doug took long-service leave with the Australian Army and joined the RACQ CQ Rescue team in March 2014. While the tasks aren’t as dangerous, they still provide intense situations and, as Doug explains, they are just as rewarding. “The military has trained me well to deal with the intensity of the situation but we do have some challenging rescues. One in particular was when we rescued two fishermen from a trawler near Keswick Island earlier this year. It was windy, the air currents were unpredictable and the swell was huge. “The job provides a lot of variety. You never know what you will be faced with next. Every time we fly it’s to help someone. That in itself is incredibly rewarding, knowing that we are providing someone with their best chance of survival,” he said. It’s as simple as that. RACQ CQ Rescue provides the best chance of survival for those in an emergency. We are fortunate, as a community, to have this level of experience on board to come to our rescue in our greatest time of need
doug white Proud to be associated with RACQ CQ Rescue as a foundation member of the Rescue 412 Club. Congratulations on 20 years serving our local community.

CONVULSIONS from a cone shell
You wouldn’t consider that a snail-like creature hidden in a shell could pose much threat in the sea but, as Henry Moore will tell you, the cone shell is one of the most painfully venomous creatures you could ever come across. Last year, Henry was skipper of the popular tourist boat Tongarra. He had moored the vessel in Tongue Bay, at Whitsunday Island, and then taken a group of tourists ashore on a smaller inflatable. He returned to the vessel on his own but, as he waded into the shallow shore to reach the inflatable, he felt something nip him on the foot. “I felt something pierce the skin but I thought it was a mud crab. You don’t really consider the worst at the start, but, by the time I got back to Tongarra, I knew it was something more serious.” “The pain made its way up my leg, locked my hip and sent my back into spasm. I was vomiting over the side of the vessel and was in a pretty bad state,” Henry said. Henry has had his fair share of bites and stings in the past. He’s been bitten by spiders, stung by jellyfish and barbed by a stingray but he said that nothing remotely compared to the excruciating pain that came from the cone shell. With no cellphone reception on Whitsunday Island, the Tongarra crew had to radio another vessel closer to Airlie for help, to relay the message to the mainland. Lying on the deck of the boat, convulsing in pain, the only comfort to Henry was listening to the VHF radio confirm that the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter was on its way. The weather conditions were atrocious and it was touch and go as to whether the helicopter could land. “It was raining and windy. You could hear the helicopter but visibility was so bad you could hardly see it. It was able to land on a sand spit and my crew had to walk me a fair way across the sand to reach it. The morphine the crew gave me straight away was enough to reduce the pain slightly which helped to calm me down,” Henry said. Henry is incredibly grateful to the RACQ CQ Rescue crew. “I don’t doubt that they saved my life. I don’t know if I would have made it if I had to be driven to Mackay.” Despite his horrific ordeal, Henry still works for the same Whitsunday tourism operator and continues to share the beauty of Whitehaven beach with visitors from around the globe.

As its largest fundraiser, it hosts the Annual Hamilton Island RACQ CQ Rescue Golf Day, where Hamilton Island Enterprises donates Dent Island Golf Course for the day. All proceeds are donated to RACQ CQ Rescue. The Golf Day sees around 120 local residents and RACQ CQ Rescue supporters take part, and includes crew and staff from the helicopter rescue team. “Over the years we have developed a great relationship with Martin Cleland (CEO), Leonie Hansen (Relationships Manager) and the rest of the RACQ CQ Rescue team. “Mum, Sarah’s not breathing” “NO PARENT CAN EVER IMAGINE BEING IN A SITUATION WHERE YOU MIGHT LOSE YOUR CHILD AND UNTIL THIS HAPPENS YOU CAN’T EVEN BEGIN TO KNOW HOW IT FEELS - YOU ALWAYS THINK THESE THINGS HAPPEN TO OTHER PEOPLE.” In August 2009, the Lewis Family went through a terrifying ordeal, when their young daughter, Sarah, stopped breathing while visiting Hamilton Island.
grade two at Clayfield College. Without the excellent service provided by both the Hamilton Island Medical Team and the RACQ CQ Rescue team, the outcome for Sarah may not have been as positive.
Sarah was only four months old, but thanks to a team of dedicated medical professionals and the RACQ CQ Rescue team, she is still here to listen to mum tell the story.
“Our whole family will forever be grateful for the quick response of RACQ CQ Rescue and Hamilton Island in treating Sarah. Ocean Dynamics will continue to support RACQ CQ Rescue. Without the ongoing support of companies and individuals, Sarah might not be here today.”
Sarah’s mother, Carolyn Lewis, is the Director of Ocean Dynamics, a tour and charter operator based in the Whitsundays. Their yacht, Ocean Affinity, was competing in its first Hamilton Island Race Week. The family were staying on Hamilton Island at the Long House, while Carolyn and Stewart, Sarah’s father, were at a function at qualia. FEEL STUCK IN A MARKETING RUT? GET MOBILE!
HOW OFTEN DO YOU CHECK YOUR PHONE? A RECENT STUDY SHOWS THE AVERAGE PERSON CHECKS THEIR PHONE APPROXIMATELY 85 TIMES PER DAY*. THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO A THIRD OF THE TIME A PERSON IS AWAKE! Consider your own use. Phone calls, messages, listening to music and checking social media. Research by Nottingham Trent University in the UK shows that mobile use is becoming habitual, with short rapid bursts lasting usually less that 30 secs. What does that mean for marketers? We have a direct line into our audience’s pocket! Mobile marketing or proximity based marketing offers businesses a new and unique opportunity to reach their target audience. One of the biggest advantages is the ability to engage customers in a location and or time based context. Parameters can be set up to send your customers messages to remind them of your store if they
are walking by, offering them a discount or incentive ‘today only’ should they pop in and purchase. How does it work? With tools such as geofences, beacons and wi-fi, notifications can be sent to a user’s phone when they are in proximity of your business. This coupled with a reward or loyalty program set up with the beginning of a powerful digital strategy. Thanks to the world of the web, these programs are also available for very reasonable prices, giving business an opportunity to present themselves uber professionally via an app, engage and reward their consumers, and collect key data regarding their behaviour…It is all within an arms length! The next step? Consider how your online strategy can work with your offline strategy… A match made in heaven! I now believe that we should treat our people how they would like to be treated, as we are all individuals
STRENGTHENING
the Whitsunday Regional Council
BARRY OMUNDSON, CEO
“Every one of us is an individual. I used to think, “Treat people how you would like to be treated,” but this will not deliver the best results. I now believe that we should treat our people how they would like to be treated, as we are all individuals.” The strength of the Whitsunday Regional Council has been bolstered by the official appointment of Barry Omundson as CEO. The former Mackay Regional Council CEO was approached shortly after his departure from the Mackay role to be appointed as acting CEO of the Whitsunday Regional Council, in September 2015. Despite already being in the acting position, his permanent appointment as CEO wasn’t granted automatically. His extensive experience within senior executive positions and ample respect for him throughout the community made him a stand-out for the position.
An immediate focus for the council is economic development. The Whitsunday Region has a 10.6% unemployment rate, and it is more than 14% in Bowen alone. Mr. Omundson commented that council has a determination to drive the economic prosperity of the Whitsunday region; to create more job opportunities, increase tourism, support and grow the horticultural and agricultural sectors and to reconnect with the community. “We will do this through an enhanced, internally driven, economic development function as well as strongly supporting the wider regional economic development and the implementation of our advocacy plan. “We want to have an open dialogue with our community, to keep them more informed of what we are doing and why. This council also has a strong focus on community pride, of how each town and village looks and feels. As Mayor Willcox states, “Putting the unity into the community.”
Through transformational leadership, Mr. Omundson’s focus will be on helping his team achieve powerful results.
“In the short time as CEO I have really enjoyed working with Mayor Willcox and the new Councillor team,” he said.
“The role of CEO in local government in Australia, and more specifically in Queensland, is a challenging and highly rewarding role. Rewarding as it provides the opportunity to work with passionate people. People like the Mayor and Councillors who work extremely hard and long for the betterment of their communities.”
Away from office, Mr. Omundson enjoys spending quality time with his wife of 28 years, Toni, and their son who lives in Brisbane.
“This inspires me to ensure that they have the very best people to deliver for the community. I have a simply philosophy in that providing the best environment for our staff to work in will enable them to enjoy their jobs and, subsequently, I have found that if you enjoy what you do, you generally get a good result. “It is my challenge to inspire people to come to work with a sense of purpose and go home with a sense of achievement,” he said.
“Despite working long hours, I do have a good worklife balance and really enjoy the simple things, like a nice wine with Toni, being with our son when we can, spending time with a few friends, taking the dogs for a walk along the beach or reading a good book. “I enjoy painting and drawing. I love watching the Game of Thrones and any cooking show. I love to cook and entertain. The Whitsundays are filled with awesome places to visit and things to do,” he said. With that level of passion at the helm, it seems the Whitsunday Regional Council is sailing towards a positive future. www.corelife.com.au www.corelife.com.au 23 1

Chamber of Commerce WHILE OFTEN DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND JUST WHAT IT IS A CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DOES, IT IS BEST DESCRIBED AS A UNION FOR BUSINESS OWNERS AND EMPLOYERS. It is an organisation that, although totally volunteer, gets things done and is often a first port of call for all levels of Government wishing to transact with the business community. It is an organisation that can provide information to people in, or thinking of starting, a business. It takes up important issues on behalf of the business community within the various tiers of Government, and, where necessary, it will fight the good fight on issues at times controversial but always with a “what’s best for business” strategy front and centre. Clearly we take a view that “what is best for business” also means we can continue to maintain and create employment. We are a piece of the wider puzzle. With Tourism Whitsunday dealing with marketing and promotion, our regional development organisation dealing with long term strategic initiatives and the chamber being the grass roots small business portal for issues which affect us and our ability to provide the jobs the region needs. No one entity works without the other being effective and no one entity can do everything. We all have important jobs to do.
The chamber over the last 12 months has driven a series of business training workshops, hosted networking and instructional events, drawn the entire community together by hosting election candidate forums as well as helping organise specific events, in partnership with business and council like the Clipper round the world race and Great Australian Bites food festival. In the coming months, we will be hosting another China ready networking breakfast and a NBN for Dummies event connecting the telco industry and providers direct with small businesses to make the coming switch to NBN as easy as possible for members and interested small business operators. These are the kind of things a chamber can and does do. It does it on a solely volunteer basis and fills a role not filled by any other entity. CRAIG TURNER
We have the opportunity to do something truly great for our region. That’s a challenge and the potential is exciting. Fast 5 facts about Craig Turner
What is the current key objective of Tourism Whitsundays?
Starsign: Taurus Favourite Colour: Blue Favourite Movie: The Castle Favourite Food: Sushi Favourite Beverage: A cold beer at the end of the week!
“We want the community to become engaged in what we do. We’ve made it easier for businesses to become members by restructuring membership to reflect the diversity of businesses in the Whitsundays. We need the businesses and community to take ownership so we can develop as one strong industry.”
Bringing with him a wealth of experience in business and marketing, Craig Turner has been appointed as CEO for Tourism Whitsundays. Mr. Turner’s experience includes eight years with Fantasea Cruises where he worked his way up to become the director of sales and marketing. He has been the marketing manager of Tourism Whitsundays and was the tourism manager for Bowen Shire Council. Craig and his wife, Mel, also own hospitality businesses in Bowen and Proserpine. He has worked on the mainland and on the islands and understands the need to develop the region’s land-based attractions as well as create synergy from the north to the south of the region. We put Craig in the Hot Seat to find out more.
What prompted you to apply for the CEO position? “I saw it as an opportunity to do something great for the region and I love a challenge. From my career and business experience I understand the barriers which make it hard for local businesses to develop and I understand the politics behind a lot of the decision making. I want to be part of the change which helps to drive this region forward as one.”
“We will be working closely with our regional council to ensure they are invested in what we do. We will seek investment to allow us to do what we need to do to grow the economy through tourism spend. “The Whitsundays is seen as one of Queensland’s four pillar destinations, we’re competing with North Queensland, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast for visitor numbers and we need to be resourced to ensure we are competitive in this space. Out bound destinations also present competition, although our destination and experiences are world class.”
What is a strategy to increase tourism numbers? “To increase visitation to our beautiful region we need to ensure we market effectively to our target markets with a clear and concise message about why the Whitsundays is a must do. The development of mainland and island infrastructure will add to the diversity of the region and increase length of stay, whilst working with aviation to address access and capacity concerns is also critical to our success going forward.”
Where is your favourite place to relax? “I enjoy fishing. A favourite destination of mine is the Gregory River in my kayak…. south of the bridge! It’s peaceful, the paddle up the river is just beautiful and it’s a quiet place to flick a few lures. I live on 100 acres and like to unwind by jumping in my tractor and putting the music on.” www.corelife.com.au 25

Deanne Pin MACKAY CURTAIN MAKING SERVICE Fast 5 facts about Deanne Favourite Movie: The Blind Side Favourite Colour: Blue Favourite Food: Asian Favourite Beverage: Rum / Coffee Starsign: Pisces With the surname Pin, one might say that Deanne was destined to be in the sewing industry! Although fate may have played its part, a bit of risk and a lot of hard work is ultimately what led to the creation of Mackay Curtain Making Service. Deanne brings more than 30 years of industry experience to her business. Curtains are made on the premises to ensure old-fashioned quality with a modern twist. But other than curtains and blinds, what truly takes your breath away at Mackay Curtain Making Service is the range of homewares, wall art and custom-made furniture. She was there whenever needed.” How do you take much-needed time away from the business? “The gym is my outlet and my time out. Flip It
Renovate and style to suit your market.
Flipping houses is the trendy new way for savvy and ambitious investors to make a quick profit by buying and selling property. Thanks to an increasing wave of home-improvement and renovation shows hitting our airways it looks relatively simple, even for those of us with no building experience.
Again, take into consideration who will be wanting to buy this house and ensure the requirements tick the boxes. Invest in the cosmetic touches which will improve each room without having to spend a fortune. Increase storage where possible as this is always a selling point. With inexpensive yet attractive furnishings and homewares available from discount department stores, it doesn’t cost a lot to make a room look modern and exciting. Styling is the secret ingredient to achieving a quick sale for a premium price.
But is it actually happening or is it all hype? The short answer is yes. It is happening and people are making good amounts of money from doing it. But as you’d imagine, it’s not quite as simple as television makes it seem.
Flipping tips Know the real estate market. For flipping to work well, you need to purchase property well below the prevailing market. While around 20 percent may sound ambitious, it’s a realistic figure to aim for if you’re serious about turning a healthy profit. It is achievable but it comes down to finding a very motivated vendor who needs to sell and knowing a real bargain when you see one. Know the market you will be selling to. Understand what buyers are looking for. If it is a family-friendly home, then it should be situated within walking-distance of a good school. Are their family-friendly facilities nearby? From the moment you purchase the property, consider who your target market will be for a sale and ensure the location ticks the boxes. 28 www.corelife.com.au
Street appeal sells. The bruised banana is always the last in the bunch to be picked. If you can turn your property from one of the ugliest on the street into the most elegant, then you’re onto a winner. Find a mentor. Flipping is a risky business, even for the experienced. If you haven’t flipped a house before, find someone who has and ask them for advice. Even better, ask for their help and input as a mentor and give them a percentage of the sale for their assistance. Remember… Flipping isn’t as easy as it looks. In the background is a lot of risk, plenty of cashflow to pay for unexpected repairs and associated costs and a lot of hard work. And we mean a lot of hard work. Even cosmetic touch-ups and styling require money and time. It can be a very profitable investment, but remember, nothing in this world comes for free.

In the kitchen, taste matters. Luxurious living is being redefined, with a greater emphasis being placed on comfort and function, without compromising on style. Custom-designed cabinetry is the best way to ensure your investment will blend seamlessly with the surrounds of your home; adding style, practicality and functionality. With more than 25 years of joinery experience, Michael and his team from North Coast Cabinetmaking are the ideal choice when it comes to quality cabinetry. Michael started his trade locally as an apprentice at 16. He spent time developing his skills in Brisbane before returning to the Whitsundays where he and his partner, Rebecca, own and operate North Coast Cabinetmaking.
advise on the best options to suit the space and enhance their lifestyle. Everything we do is custom-built. We measure, design, build and install to ensure quality and functionality. “The biggest difference between what we offer compared with a kit-set option comes down to quality and finish. We only use quality materials for durability and because we measure and custom-build everything we do, the install is seamless. Our dedication is to the end result. It’s what we have built our reputation on.”
A family-oriented business, their son, Cooper, also works for them. The team of five cabinet makers are kept in constant high demand. A large proportion of their work comes from local builders who rely on North Coast Cabinetmaking to install high-quality cabinetry for kitchens, bathrooms and wardrobes but, as Michael explains, they do enjoy private contracts also.
“We have the expertise and experience to create a wide range of customdesigned creations; from unique wardrobe solutions to home theatre cabinets. In our beautiful climate it’s becoming common to blend inside / outside living. We can help with alfresco area cabinet design and outdoor kitchens,” Michael said. The quality isn’t just apparent to the eye, it’s also award-winning. North Coast Cabinetmaking was part of the kitchen install team for Moloko Homes, which won a Master Builders award for Best Kitchen. The kitchen was also featured in Excellence in Building magazine.
“We are happy to work with individuals who are looking to build new or renovate an existing space. We consult with them at their home so we can

You know your reputation for quality stretches far and wide when a building inspector comments, “Another typical ShedBoss shed, heavy duty.” Built strong, built right – that’s the ShedBoss way. ShedBoss Whitsundays and Mackay is a family business, owned and operated by Grant and Donna Rogers.
estate industries and their builders, Ben and Nation, have the same perfectionist nature as Grant. Communication is key for Grant and Donna, who understand that word-of-mouth referrals and a reputation for quality is what will see their business thrive for years to come.
Grant has more than 25 years of experience in the construction industry, beginning his career as a steel erector in 1998 with Modern Garages, then Garage World Ipswich. He made a spur-of-the-moment decision to purchase ShedBoss Whitsundays after discovering the local business was for sale while he was on holiday. Within six months, Grant, Donna and their three children, made the move from Ipswich to pursue their business dream.
“Word-of-mouth is golden and we endeavor to give our customers a positive experience to the best of our ability. We also like to inform and empower our potential customers to help make the right choice in obtaining a safe and reliable investment for their future. An investment which will also enrich and enhance their lifestyle,” Donna said. ShedBoss can build more than just sheds. The range of lifestyle enhancements includes patios and awnings, adding additional spaces to people’s homes. “We can handle the lot, from submitting paperwork with the council to site visits, arranging concreters, everything right up to handing over the keys,” Grant said.
“Being a small family-run business, plus having three children, definitely presents challenges. However our strong work-ethic, commitment to each and every build and our children drive us to succeed each day. When we have the chance to stand back, take a breath and look at all we have accomplished we realise it’s been a lot in a short amount of time and we’ve made some great new friends along the way,” Grant said. Grant describes himself as a perfectionist, ensuring each build is of a high standard as well as pleasing to the eye. He is backed by a team of ShedBoss engineers who are strict about meeting the building code of Australia. ShedBoss Whitsunday and Mackay is also Shed Safe accredited, ensuring a high level of structural safety. “All of our steel is Australian owned and made, including quality BlueScope steel and Colourbond Sheeting.” As well as backing Australian made products, Grant and Donna employ locals. Their office manager, Faye, brings extensive knowledge in the building and real
When it comes to a strong shed, the boss is best. “We had a shed constructed in Strathdickie and are very happy with the final result. It was not a standard design and Grant put forward some great ideas so that it would blend with the existing house, both in design and colour. The quality of the finish is very good and Grant and Donna did a great job, running the entire project, organising the contractors and completing all the approvals. We are very pleased with the final product and would have no hesitation in recommending ShedBoss Whitsundays.” Andie Moyle and Barry Mitchell

Experience the difference a professional can make. Personal assistance for all your property needs, from the country to the coast, Professionals Whitsundays provides a boutique real estate service, strategy-driven and targeted on results. Principal, Michael Kavanagh, moved to the Whitsundays in 1982 with the Bank of NSW, (now Westpac). He has been a selling principal since 1995, supported by wife, Kim, who has played an active role within the businesses in rental support and administration. Their daughter, Mary, recently moved back to the Whitsundays to join the team as well. Kim’s family has strong ties to the Whitsundays, her grandfather started the first Holden dealership in the area, Dobbos Garage, in the 1950s. After 16 years as principal with another real estate franchise, Michael made the choice to join the Professionals in 2013. He explains, this offered a stronger residential focus in both the selling and rental markets as well as strategic marketing plans and a stronger focus on customer service. “Being a boutique agency, we offer a personalised service to sellers and landlords. We keep in mind that we are in the people business and our first priority is to our clients. With
intimate knowledge of the local area, we understand the dynamics and logistics of working and living in our unique community,” he said. As well as being a family business, Michael’s team is strengthened further by the experience of Annette Stripeikis and Renee Faust. Annette has been a property manager since 2000 and has gained a reputation for being one of the most experienced in the Whitsundays. Renee started her real estate career with a large agency in Townsville before returning to the Whitsundays. Professionals Whitsundays have strengthened their market position by moving their office from Proserpine to Cannonvale earlier this year. Given that the residential market shows continued growth toward the coastline, the change has already increased the interest from vendors, landlords, tenants and genuine buyers. “We plan to grow our team in both sales and rentals over the next few months to better service our existing clients and to meet new demand. We are looking forward to the challenge of growing and are excited to bring the Professionals difference to a growing market,” Michael said. Make your next move a strategic one, with the experience and dedication of a true professional.

Home is where the hear PEPPERBERRY HOUSE
“A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND MILES BEGINS WITH A SINGLE STEP.” THIS CHINESE PROVERB BY LAO TZU GIVES INSPIRATION THAT ANY CHALLENGE, NO MATTER HOW DAUNTING, STARTS WITH A SINGLE ACTION. MEI ELSON’S JOURNEY IS ONE MANY OF US CAN RELATE TO. A WORKING MUM, MEI’S LIFE HAS ALWAYS BEEN VERY GOAL-ORIENTED. Her thoughts were constantly business-focused and she strived to excel in her career. Despite her achievements, she had a vacant feeling, but of what she couldn’t determine. A chance encounter with a monk inspired Mei to look deeper into other aspects of herself, which put her on a life-changing journey of selfdiscovery. “This fateful meeting enlightened me to a whole new level of learning and growth, outside of business. It altered my outlook completely and opened my mind to new ways of thinking.” “It wasn’t natural for me in the beginning. It wasn’t who I used to be and it hasn’t been the easiest journey, but it has been the most rewarding.” “Being able to just sit without having to do something has been a focus of mine. I’ve connected more with nature and less with material objects,” she said. With this new thinking, Mei suddenly saw her home, Pepperberry House, in a different light. Whereas before her home defined her achievements as a business woman, now she has seen that the gratification doesn’t come from the property itself, but what it can offer others. 34 www.corelife.com.au
“It was Jacky from Health and Wellness Retreats who opened my eyes to how I could use Pepperberry in my quest to help others on their own journey. Owning a bed-and-breakfast has always been a dream of mine, but I realised I could do more with it than just begin another business venture.” “The times I looked out across the ocean or practiced yoga overlooking the valley, I knew I could share this experience with others. Pepperberry House is the most idyllic location for meditation, mindfulness and soul searching. It is a peaceful sanctuary for those on their own soul-discovering paths,” Mei said. The soothing ambience is evident from the moment you settle in. Tall ceilings with large windows create light and space, letting nature in. Inspirational quotes adorn the walls, reminding guests that this time is for them. Drink in the ocean view from the pool, gaze over the tranquil valley from the yoga deck and breathe the country air from the lawn swing. Sit. Breathe. Relax. “I was so busy filling my life with things and tasks, it is only now after this journey that I can learn to live with moments over things and dedicate time to myself and my family, as well as work. Achieving true work-life balance to spend more time with my family has been the most valuable gift of all,” Mei said. Enveloped by nature, this heavenly piece of paradise is the ideal location to awaken your mind, body and spirit.

Tips for introducing artwork into you r home
Art looks best if the middle of the pictu re is 145cm from the floor. This is the average height of the hum an eye and it is used in most art galleries around the world. Never hang a painting in direct sunli ght as the colours can quickly fade. The frame is all-important and can have a big effect on the overall appeal of the piece. Talk to a professio nal picture framer for the best advice.
Waru Tjukurrpa - Fire Dreaming by Pitjantjtjara artist Jorna Newberry. Jorna is the niece and carer of legendary Indigenous artist, Tommy Watson who has mentored her over the years to the point she is now one of the most in demand artists from the Central Western Desert region. This story relates to burning off the land to regenerate the countryside. The painting depicts the flames jumping up into the sky and embers that float off the fire. The bottom of the painting is the rejuvenating undergrowth. Variations of Fire Dreaming are available in other sizes at the gallery.
Size and scale are really important when selecting art for your home. Do not put a small piece on a large open wall or a large piece on a small surface. If there is a chance you could move house choose a standard size piec e of art between 30-120cm which will be easy to accommodate in any environment. If you love it, buy it! Trust your instin cts when purchasing art. It is a persona l expression, something you want to look at and enjoy ever y day.

How to decorate your home with style and taste Decorate from dark to light. Use dark er colours for the floor, medium colours for the walls and light for the ceiling. This mimics a natural environment which is generally dark er at the feet. If you are decorating your whole hous e start by deciding the colour scheme in your main areas, eg loun ge-room. Then, you can pull one colour from the main room to use as inspiration for smaller spaces for a pleasant flow throughout the hous e. Use the colours from the biggest patte rned object in the room as inspiration for other features and wall colours. Use the colour wheel. If you are tryin g to create a casual relaxing feel pick Take in colours that are next to each other spiratio on the wheel like blue and green. n f rom y our ow clothes Take inspiration from your own cloth n es and st and style. Pick colours that also flatte yle. r you, if you look great in denim you might want to pick a navy blue sofa . Always add a splash of black. A sma ll pop of black clarifies the rest of the colours in the room, so consider a black lamp or vase. Use ratios. Experts recommend 60% of a dominant colour (walls), 30% of a secondary colour (upholste ry) and 10% of an accent colour (accessories).

TIPS ON CREATING YOUR
You don’t need to travel to experience the lush tropical gardens in five star resorts. Here in Tropical Queensland we have the perfect climate to create one at home. A hot trend right now is colorful resort-style gardens and they are not as difficult to create as you think. With a few handy hints that are easy to implement, your garden could make you feel like you are on holiday every day!
HOW TO ACHIEVE THE RESORT STYLE • Link indoor and outdoor space with linear pathways to add structure. • Combine brightly coloured foliage. Plant red, yellow, orange, pink, purple and lime green leaves next to each other. • Think Balinese lanterns and brightly coloured cushions to create pockets of colour. • Add contrast with formal paths and straight gardens edges which look great next to colorful, luscious palms and vibrant foliage. • Go for colourful flowers to give seasonal accents to your garden: lilies, hibiscus and frangipani are perfect.

Foliage works well in tropical climates as it provides areas of interest all year round. To achieve a classic resort-style look, your foliage needs to be bold, flamboyant and lively.
When you think of a five star holiday resort an image of a row of perfectly placed palms immediately appears in your mind. Bamboo and palms, although wild and unruly, provide a quintessential resort vibe.
When you are making your selection consider the size, shape and texture of their leaves. Another expert’s tip is to plant in groups of odd numbers (three, five, seven and nine) to give an artist’s brushstroke of colour and an overall natural look. If you have a passion for the dramatic, try planting contrasting foliage next to each other.
These dense green walls make the perfect borders and privacy screening plus create a fern-like ceiling to your garden. Purchasing the right palm for your garden and local climate is very important and there is a broad range to choose from so make sure you visit a palm or bamboo specialist.

TIPS
Irrigating early in the morning will reduce evaporation and allow the water to soak into the soil before the sun comes up meaning better use of this valuable resource.
3 5
for irrigating your garden
2
Install an automatic system. Let the controller do the work of turning the sprinklers on and also importantly off again at the right time, saving you time money and water.
FROM PAUL AT IRRIGEAR WHITSUNDAYS
Deep watering less often is a more efficient way of watering your garden and lawn. I recommend an hour once a week instead of 6 days x 10 mins. This allows the water to get deeper into the soil giving a deeper root system and stronger plant which will be more drought tolerant.
4
When you are ready to set up a system, call us to do a pressure and flow test. This will save time and money.
Match the nozzle types to obtain an even distribution and by standardising the system the maintenance is simplified.

6
Consider the types of plants and group them to reflect their water usage.
A well-planned irrigation system will save you time and money and more importantly, result in your garden achieving the paradise you hoped for.

Learning The Ropes It could be said that Logan’s Adventure Playground (LAP) has already become the outdoor activity hub for children of all ages in The Whitsunday area. Located in Cannonvale, opposite the beach in Coral Esplanade, you’ll find this amazing playground, buzzing with children discovering the fun and challenges of the recently installed Rope Pyramid. Standing at 7.5m tall, it can only be described as “awesome”. The Play and Shine Project Group is the entity in charge of Fund Raising and allocating funds for the project. They work with other stake holders (WRC and John Harper Landscape Design). Heading the group is Lisa Christofersen. We recently caught up with her for the latest news on the project.
Also, the playground is named after my son, who was the inspiration behind the public donating back when we started in December 2011. The addition of the Rope Pyramid hits home, as this piece happened to be Logan’s favourite near The Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.”
“The project is now starting to take real shape. Since our small, dedicated team took over the fund raising in October last year I am excited to see the momentum has been unstoppable. The $41,000 that we have raised over two fundraisers, picket sales and sponsorship means that we are half way towards purchasing the Fort.
How can you help? “We are now concentrating on stage 3. This includes the $20,000 Giant Nest Swing and the $83,000 Climbing Fort. A great way to help to fast track the playground is to purchase a $99 fence picket. We have only 50 left for the front of the playground. Each picket tells a story.
“My motivation is simple. Every child deserves a happy, safe fun & challenging environment for play. I believe that this beautiful playground will set the stage for the creation of some beautiful childhood memories, foster friendships and become a beautiful meeting place for families.
Gratitude to our Gold Sponsors Doctor 2 You and George Christensen, Silver sponsors Think Water Whitsunday, Logan’s Mum and Whitsunday Christian College. Bronze Sponsor Whitsunday Family Practice. prediction of the Reserve Bank dropping rates again this calendar year. Yes, I am predicting that the Reserve Bank Australia might drop the cash rate to 1.5% before Christmas this year and it could possibly drop further than that. That’s lower than it has ever been in my lifetime. Why would they do that? Most people are not aware that the world has been involved in currency wars for several years. The degree of manipulation is now so great, that basic economics is having less and less influence on the value of currencies. Currency wars are one of the most destructive and feared outcomes in international economics. They offer the sorry spectacle of countries stealing growth from their trading partners. So if you are getting my drift, I am predicting that the Reserve Bank Australia will lower the cash rate even further, which in turn will lessen the attraction of the Aussie Dollar, which in turn will lessen its value and therefore improve our ability to export. A lower Australian Dollar is now necessary if the Australian economy is to grow at about 3% by the end of 2017.
IS IT A GOOD TIME TO LOCK IN INTEREST RATES? FOLLOWING LAST WEEK’S BLOG ON LENDING RATES FOR RESIDENTIAL INVESTMENT, I STATED THAT WHILST MOST OF THE MAJOR BANKS PASSED ON THE FULL 0.25% ON MOST PRODUCTS, THEY DID NOT DO SO FOR SITUATIONS WHERE PEOPLE WANTED TO LOCK IN AN INTEREST RATE FOR SEVERAL YEARS. A reader of my blog has asked if this is a good time to lock in rates for, say, 5 years. I will state that there is no blanket solution, as clients have different circumstances, but many people want the comfort of locking in all or part of their loan knowing they can afford it and not be concerned about a possible future rise in interest rates. It is not likely that there will be an increase in rates any time soon. You can lock in my
How is this going to affect my clients? It is all positive. I have an advertising banner that says you can buy a half million home on no deposit and pay it off for less than the cost of your weekly groceries. I now have to change the wording to say less than half the cost of your weekly groceries. Interest rates are the lowest they have ever been and in Brisbane’s northern corridor the rent returns have never been better. A few years ago my clients were spending $300 per week to pay off a $500,000 home and now it is only costing them about $150 per week. If you have any questions about the current interest rates or negative gearing and are interested in enquiring about buying property to start your Residential Property Portfolio, please contact our office to schedule a free, no-obligation consultation.

Rise of The Drones Th3rd Dimension Media It takes creativity to build something new and exciting.
Step into the ‘Th3rd Dimension’ to discover how reinvention through art and technology can give greater scope to business. Specialising in drone and aerial videography and photography, Th3rd Dimension Media is the collaboration of Pablo Hauber Six and Kate Tulett. The couple met through mutual friends and soon discovered that their talents combined could create a medium which would revolutionise the way that the world saw businesses in the Whitsundays. Pablo is the technologist and grew up in a mediasavvy family. His father has been in the media industry for 25 years and together they had been pushing the boundaries with developing drones for digital media and experimenting with new technology. Kate has a passion for creative design and had been contracted commercially for graphic concepts. The couple are both creative-minded with strong artistic traits and were passionate about combining their skills in business. Where Th3rd Dimension Media soars to great heights is in the air. They have designed, engineered and built the Whitsunday’s first custom built multi-rotor fleet, using state of the art technologies to provide better outcomes to aerial

photography, videography and film. As Kate explains, two heads are better than one when it comes to taking to the sky. “We operate on a dual-operator basis with Pablo as pilot and myself as the camera operator. We each have a remote and Pablo is in charge of flying the aircraft and putting us in the right spot while I capture the shots with the camera and gimbal. “We have hours and hours of experience; filming, photographing and flying together. Most operators are a single operator, piloting and operating the camera at the same time, where we really excel by working together as a team,” she said. Importantly, Th3rd Dimension Media are fully licensed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia (CASA) to operate remotely piloted aircraft commercially. The drone aircraft can be used for a multitude of purposes, from wedding and event coverage to 360 degree virtual tours, and real estate videos. The business also has a variety of clientele for creative production, including animation and graphic design to content creation and web design. “We are extremely passionate about our providing well presented, professional and cost effective services to our clients,” Pablo said. While the couple dedicate significant time to their business, spending time with their daughter is paramount and say there is nothing they love to do more than relax together in the Whitsundays. “Creative minds need refreshing so we schedule time for ourselves to chill out. Naturally, living in this stunning part of the world, we love to get out on the water and go fishing and spear-fishing. While it’s somewhat workrelated, we also love to race drones,” Kate said.
Look no further than Th3rd Dimension Media, a different view for your business.

Epicure Homewares CATHY AND STEVE SELMAN
A person who delights in fine delicacy, especially gourmet food and wine, is an epicure. Gourmet goddesses, budding home chefs and even masters of the barbecue will delight in the unique range of cookware and culinary classes available at Epicure Homewares. Despite being well known throughout the Whitsundays as Cathy-Gourmet, Cathy Selman had never dreamed she would be the owner of a luxury homewares retail business. Cathy grew up in Gladstone but fell in love with the Whitsundays while sailing on a Contiki yachting cruise. Having been offered a position with a Whitsundays yachting business, Cathy prepared to relocate. It was during this time she met her future-to-be husband, Steve, so for now the Whitsundays would have to wait. Patience paid off and as fate would have it, Cathy and Steve moved to Hayman Island after they were married. A 12 month contract on the island turned into nearly five years, until they settled on a five acre property on the mainland, one week before their first child was born. Wanting to keep busy and not knowing many people in the area, Cathy thought that giving an in-home cooking demonstration a try would be a great way to meet people. Little did she realise that years later this would evolve into a new career. As well as participating in community fundraisers, Cathy spent a week on the Gold Coast training with famous French chef, Gabriel Gaté. 50 www.corelife.com.au
Epicure Homewares became the start of a new journey for both Cathy and Steve. They opened their first store in Deicke Arcade, Proserpine, with a small demonstration kitchen and line of basic product. Fifteen years later and two relocations to allow for growth, Epicure Homewares has since established itself as a divine destination for luxury lines of homeware. The biggest advancement came with the introduction of online shopping, allowing discerning foodies from across Australia the opportunity to purchase epicurean products. What makes Epicure Homewares, “Simply better than a chain store,” is the unique and designer ranges available, good old-fashioned service from a privately-owned family business and a selection of cooking classes and cake decorating courses to ensure you make the most from your purchases. In fact, Epicure Homewares have an exclusive license as a Wilton USA registered cake decorating establishment, attracting students from Townsville to Rockhampton. Cathy is fortunate to have crossed paths with a number of celebrity chefs, either in-store or during training and marketing sessions; from Pete Evans and Curtis Stone to Iain Hewitson and Matt Moran. To become an epicurean master of your kitchen, visit Epicure Homewares in Proserpine, or find them online at epicurehomewares.com.au, and turn your everyday into gourmet.
GJ Gardner
Homes Whitsunday LISA AND JONATHAN MOIR
Sometimes a successful business strategy can be a simple one. Such as, “We build your new home as if it were our own.” It is this care and attention to detail that husband and wife team, Lisa and Jonathan Moir, believe gives GJ Gardner Homes Whitsunday a competitive advantage. “We don’t build houses, we build homes. It starts with having hundreds of design options, which are customisable, to create unique homes to enhance the lifestyle of our clients,” Lisa said. Jonathan’s building career started as an 18-yearold apprentice in Melbourne. After gaining a range of experience from renovations to million-dollar builds, he moved to Hamilton Island to further his industry knowledge. Less than three years later, he established JM Constructions Whitsunday, opening a range of builds such as Peppers Resort, Whitsunday Bus Terminal and many residential homes throughout the Whitsundays. The couple are now franchise owners with GJ Gardner Homes and take pride in the friendly, personalised service they provide. “Building a new home, it’s what dreams are made of and we’re here to help make those dreams become a reality,” Jonathan said.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ICONIC BRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY
Jonathan and Lisa are parents as well as business owners and admit it can be tough to balance lifestyle and work. “We are just normal down to earth people, living the dream lifestyle in the Whitsundays which we love; the beaches, the reef, on and off the water activities and the small community we’re surrounded by. “We still consider our business to be in a developmental stage so our focus is to work hard every opportunity we can. There’s not a lot of time for anything else and it can be a roller-coaster ride, but we’re continually learning. We’re blessed with great kids who don’t mind spending occasional time at the office and, of course, timeout when the grandparents arrive is always a holiday to look forward to,” Lisa said. Jonathan’s passion outside of the business rarely sees daylight due to work commitments, but his pride and joy, an Escort rally car, will be getting more TLC in the future. Whether it’s a first home, investment opportunity or retirement retreat, Jonathan and Lisa can tailor a design solution to suit your budget. “It’s gotta be a GJ Gardner Home!”
The Perfect Design TAMMY AND SCOTT
Livable, luxurious and long-lasting; the key components to great interior design. The elements we place in our home define how we spend each day living, so it makes sense to see the cohesion of our choices before we make the commitment to live with them. This is the vision that business owners and business partners, Scott Fennell and Tammy Quinlan, had when bringing their businesses together under one roof. Fennell’s Floor Coverings and Vogue Interiors Whitsundays bring quality internal and external flooring, window furnishings and wallpapers together in one showroom. The concept has created a destination where visitors can look, touch and get a feel for different colours and textures side by side. Tammy explains how the bold business venture has been mutually beneficial. “Whilst both business are individually owned, we share the common goal of giving our clients the best destination for interior inspiration.” “The showroom is inviting and gives our clients an interactive experience. When considering window furnishings we are able to put the flooring samples alongside the fabric samples to ensure tones and textures work.” “We’ve created an inviting ambience where people can take their time, browse, colourmatch and feel inspired,” she said. With more than 30 years in the flooring industry, Scott’s installation experience is invaluable in helping clients decide which choice will best suit their home or business. “Not only can we offer great advice in the showroom, but we are also happy to visit a client’s home to provide a measure and quote. We strive to be efficient and stand by the quality of our products and installation,” he said. You would be surprised at what you can find under one roof, from products which suit our unique tropical climate to new season trends.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY: ICONIC BRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY
“Advancements in technology mean that blinds can be automated to open and close at a chosen time of the day, to maximise home heating and cooling efficiency.” “You can achieve a timber floor look with vinyl planking for a fraction of the cost and it’s tough enough to drive a forklift over.” Tammy and Scott are passionate about their industries but are also focused on supporting the Whitsunday region through business support and employing locals. “We are equal opportunity employers taking the time to skill school leavers entering the workforce. We train new staff in what are considered to be dying trades in both curtain making and floor laying.” “Our aim is to continue to grow so we can offer more inspiration to better serve our clients for years to come. A mood room is our latest concept which we hope to bring to life in the showroom very soon, watch this space,” Tammy said. 52 www.corelife.com.au
The difference is in the detail, with quality furnishings from Fennell’s and Vogue.
What are the famous last words which put more tension on a friendship than any other? “Mate, if you help me move, I’ll put on some beers and a BBQ after.” Grandma’s porcelain heirloom smashed on the driveway, a dented fridge and a strained back muscle later, you realise this wasn’t the best plan you ever had. Take the stress and effort out of your move by getting the team from Overland Removals Whitsundays to do the heavy lifting for you. Driven by integrity, Overland Removals is a family owned and operated business which takes pride in offering an efficient and affordable service. Founder, Jared Townsend, brings more than 10 years of removals experience to his business. After the birth of his first child, he moved from the Sunshine Coast to fill a need for a specialist removals company in the Whitsundays. He moved with his wife, Lindsay, a graphic designer by trade who designed the business’s website. The couple now have two children, a boy and a girl. After establishing Overland Removals Whitsundays, the business experienced significant growth. Jared recently appointed Dan Hicks as manager and has expanded his fleet to three trucks. He also relocated the business to Carlo Drive in Cannonvale, offering the sale of packing supplies as well as a storage facility.
Overland Removals service the greater Whitsunday region, including Hayman and Hamilton Islands, and provide services between the Gold Coast and Cairns weekly. They specialise in antiques and take pride in offering a white glove removals service. Jared believes that the core strength of his business is the enthusiasm of his team. “We’re a young crew, all under the age of 30, which means we’re fit, fast and efficient. Three of our guys play for the Whitsunday Brahmans and we’re proud to be one of their corporate sponsors,” Jared said. Dan believes the care and attention they give each move is what generates a lot of word-of-mouth referrals for them. “We shrink-wrap items for extra protection and take great care with our client’s possessions.” When they’re not on the job, Jared and Dan enjoy time out on the Whitsunday water, fishing and diving around the islands. Relocating should be a fun and exciting start to the next chapter of your life. Don’t let breakages ruin the experience. Call Overland Removals to do the packing, stacking and delivering for you. Jared and Dan’s packing tip “Label your boxes on the side, not the top, so you can still read the contents when they are stacked.”

A Fighting Team A DJ, PERSONAL TRAINER, AND A PROFESSOR WALK INTO A ROOM... Sounds like the start of a joke, but what these guys have achieved in the last few years, both individually and collectively, is a story worth telling. Dan Zealand, Luke Anderson & Anton Zafir are the driving force behind Airlie Fight Night, which has become an iconic event for the region since the first one nearly 4 years ago. This unique event showcases local amateur and professional exponents of MMA, Muay Thai and Boxing putting themselves to the test against opponents from all over the country. One unique aspect of this event is the “Fight Night Experience”, which involves a gruelling 13 week challenge to condition and prepare prospective fighters, many of them first timers, to step into the ring. Dan, 29, is a Sales Executive, Personal Trainer at Airlie Fitness, and Trainer at Whitsunday Martial Arts (WMA). Dan moved to the Whitsundays 7 years ago from the Sunshine Coast where he was an accomplished PT & fought several times as a boxer. It was then that he reconnected with his old school mate, Anton, and Whitsunday Martial Arts was born. Anton, 28, is a High School HPE & Science Teacher by day, and a devastating weapon of MMA destruction by night. After his first fight in 2009, Anton’s meteoric rise through the MMA ranks included his first pro 54 www.corelife.com.au
fight in 2012. He then he went on to win his first Australian Title in 2015 with a defense of the same in 2016. Anton, aka. “The Professor”, is rapidly becoming a household name, with his appearances on the card of major UFC & Nitro events. Luke, 27, is a local entrepreneur who started out as a solo DJ. Now the owner of Boom Nightclub, Cartel Nightclub and LA Entertainment, he also has a portfolio that includes a construction company, hairdresser and a scaffolding business, among others. All successful individuals, as a team they have found the right formula to make Airlie Fight Night one of the best events of its kind in the land, but with a unique local flavour. They all agree that Airlie Fight Night 5 on July 16, in the pristine surrounds of the Whitsunday Sailing Club, will the best one yet, with a card that promises to provide a full on night of entertainment. There’s also a massive charity auction on the night, with proceeds to support Whitsunday Crisis & Counselling Centre in their help for victims of domestic & sexual abuse. Tickets available from MOSTIX, BOOM NIGHTCLUB, AIRLIE SCISSOR SISTERS, WHITSUNDAY SAILING CLUB & WMA.
Killer Signs
All Killer – No Filler Don’t be shy, expose yourself. When it comes to your business, clever exposure with maximum impact is everything. Shine the light on your business and emerge from the shadows with eye-catching promotional material from Killer Signs. Owners, Simon Webb and Rachel Archbald, explain how Killer’s motto, “All killer, no filler,” results in maximum impact. “Capturing attention and then delivering an important message comes down to effective design. We pride ourselves on delivering a unique product and that comes from being able to offer the full service, from conception to completion,” they said. Simon has been an owner of Killer Signs since its inception, bringing 16 years of industry experience to the business. Many of those years were in Melbourne, allowing him to bring unique urban flair to the Whitsundays. “Killer Signs wouldn’t be where it is now if it weren’t for the incredible business partners I’ve had throughout the past few years. It was both a proud and daunting moment when Rachel and I became sole business owners earlier this year. We’re excited to drive the business further forward and
continue to grow,” Simon said. Driving forward, if you’ll excuse the pun, is a key component to Killer Signs. It specialises in high-impact graphic wrap for vehicles, turning a standard mode of transportation into a moving billboard. A great example of this is the Whitsunday Transit bus where Killer Signs designed and placed a full vinyl wrap. The side of the bus displays an eye-catching aeroplane, the airport transfer message is delivered loud and clear! Killer Signs use the highest quality vinyl and over-laminates from around the globe that include Avery, 3M and Arlon. “The bus is a daily reminder of what we do here at Killer Signs, and every time we see it, it makes us proud. That job was really such a simple concept but the impact is huge and really personifies our All Killer, No Filler message,” Rachel said. From one-off custom design for small items to vinyl wrapping entire fleets, every scale of project is possible. Killer Signs can work with your business during the design stage to ensure your branding represents your personality and point of difference. Business cards, promotional material and signs; big and small, for your business to be seen it pays to be Killer.

HAIRWAY HAIR ARTIST : Shane Gibbs MAKE UP ARTIST : Lauren Skippen MODEL Kristy
The philosophy of Hairway is to develop the ultimate service salon, combining it with commercial creative hair fashion. “It is all about making people feel special. Shane Gibbs, owner of Hairway has 30 years of experience in the hair and beauty industry. Hairway is always geared to the future and focused on providing cutting edge styles as well as the ensuring you get the best look you want in a creative way.
BEFORE
1. The Colour
When Kristy came to us her hair was very conservative. The colour was dull and lifeless and the style didn’t bring out Kristy’s amazing features. Kristy commented that she wanted something more modern and edgy and didn’t want to look mumsy any more. We knew it was time for a complete makeover. At Hairway we believe that stepping outside your boundaries is exciting and the best way to achieve a new modern look. If you haven’t had a change in the last 6 months, it is definitely time.
58 www.corelife.com.au
Kristy’s hair was dull and very gold but she also didn’t want any thing that had a high upkeep. We decided, that for Kristy ,we would give her a Modern twist on Ombre. Kristy would walk out of the salon with Soft Purple Roots fading to silver grey ends. The magic of this colour is that it will fade to a natural Ombre of Earthy Light Brown roots to Pearl Blonde ends, A great modern change without the commitment.
OMG! I love it! I do look amazing. I can’t believe what a difference it makes. It gives me so much more confidence and I feel so much younger. Not only do I love my new look, I also had such a great time at Hairway with Shane and his team. Thanks for making me feel so special.
2. The Cut A common mistake we see is when people have there hair heavily framing their face, as with Kristy’s hair it closed in her face making it look long and thin. Kristy needed something that was easy to do with her busy lifestyle but still wanted it to look styled and modern. We decided on an offset concave bob with asymmetrical sides to strengthen her jawline. To make it edgy, we undercut the Right side curving around to the back left side. The concave was precisely cut off centre, to make it unique and modern. The fringe was shaped to make it sweep to the side, enhancing Kristy’s
eyes and cheekbones. You can clearly see how this opens her face drawing your attention to her eyes, very stunning! 3. The Finish
AFTER
Kristy hair was softly blow-dried using Wella and Sebastian Products. Volume, movement and shine being the key. This will be very easy to replicate at home just using her fingers or a large round brush to blow dry.
After driving 3 hours to our appointment, I relish every moment of the experience at Hairway. Tackling a waxy issue I often get asked how one should manage the wax in their ears and what the purpose of it is. Our grandparents actually got it right when they said “nothing smaller than your elbow in your ears”.
progressing down into the ear canal through its sticky consistency. This also applies to small insects such as bugs, cockroaches, flies and beetles which can crawl or fly into the ear.
Although an overproduction of wax can be detrimental the constant removal or absence of it can cause much bigger problems.
The actual smell of the wax also amazingly acts as a deterrent to prevent insects from wanting to crawl into these orifices whilst we are sleeping.
Ear wax or cerumen has several purposes, firstly the oils in it have natural antifungal and antibacterial properties which can prevent the onset as well as the sustenance of ear infections within the ear canal. Further contributing to this is the role it plays in keeping the ear canal at a certain pH level as its acidity is unfavourable for many micro-organisms. Another major role it plays is to trap any foreign objects which enter the ear from
Attempts to remove ear wax can also lead to problems. I have attended to several people who permanently lost the hearing in an ear because they were bumped whilst cleaning an ear with a bobbypin, toothpick or cotton wool bud. These items can perforate the ear drum and rupture the inner ear causing permanent deafness and balance problems. Furthermore using
cotton wool buds to clean the ear usually just pushes the wax further into the ear canal and impacts the wax into a hard ball which can be very difficult and painful to remove. Not to mention removing all the antifungal and antibacterial oils from the ear canal walls. The best way to remove wax is for it to wait until it progresses out of the ear canal into the opening of the ear and then wiping it out with a tissue. If there is excessive wax in the ear canal which has to be removed because it is hampering hearing or hearing aid use, then there are several options for removal. You can try wax softener which may soften it enough for it to work its own way out, however more often than not it does not remove it. If this does not work you can consult your GP who

may remove it via suction or syringing while the wax is soft. Alternatively you can consult specialist Audiologists who have done wax removal training and they can remove it straight away. We generally remove it with a combination of suction, wax rings and irrigation with sterile water. Removal in this way is painless, safe and only takes a matter of minutes. If water is used, either with irrigation or syringing, we try to suction out any excess moisture and also advise use of aqua ear for any irrigation or syringing to fully dry the canal, remnant moisture can lead to fungal infection.

Closed Colon Hydrotherapy WHAT IS IT? Closed colonics is a system of healing that assists our body’s elimination channels. Getting rid of waste by-products from our blood/lymphatic/liver and colon. To do this we gently fill your colon with water to flush and hydrate. This is done in a discreet and non-painful manner. This is a therapy that is based on an age old concept with modern technology and offers healing to mind, body and spirit. All of our devices are TGA approved and our disposable, one time only use speculums and tubing are all TGA approved. No nasty plastics or BPA plastics are used. WHY WOULD YOU DO IT? If you have been unwell with a disease, suffering from any type of digestive disorder, bloating, constipation etc, suffering from an auto-immune disorder, difficult weight to move, you want to do a detox, parasite cleanse, you have diabetes in your family, colonoscopy preparation, you just want to be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be., you want to feel light, vibrant ready to embrace your life WHO NEEDS IT? We say everyone. Dr Norman Walker is famously quoted as saying “now, like no other time, do we need to ensure we have a cleansed colon” . While our body is an amazing system and has the ability to cleanse, it was not designed to cleanse the modern toxins that we are filled with on a daily basis. It is not a one-way system, rather circulatory. This is why we clean our teeth daily. In having colonics we are ensuring our drain pipes are not harbouring any nasties, that there is a great healthy home for all of our microbes and our body is well hydrated for cellular renewal. What is NeurOptimal?
At Peak Body Mechanics, we not only treat your body to relieve your aches and pain, we actually address your neuroplasticity via a safe and reliable brain training method called NeurOptimal. The Central Nervous system (your brain) is responsible for many functions affecting your bodily and mental states, due to a hectic pace of life, most people experience symptoms linked to dissonances in the CNS, such as sleeping difficulties, lack of mental focus or clarity, even chronic pain. Osteopaths treat holistically, which means that we want to give a patient the most up to date and rounded treatments to address as many factors causing health issues. This is why we offer NeurOptimal Neurofeedback. It is simply a way to enhance the potential of each patient. Anyone can benefit from this safe form of brain training, from young toddlers to the elderly. During a NeurOptimal® session, you wear two tiny sensors on your head and ear clips on your ears that record your brain waves (ie Beta-Alpha-Theta-Delta waves). In a calm, peaceful setting, you sit in a comfortable chair and listen to music through head phones while watching a never-ending fractal image, or a movie, on a monitor. The music and images respond to your brainwaves as unproductive brain patterns create brief interruptions in the visual display or music (you’ll hear scratches). These interruptions signal the brain to self-correct into a more natural, relaxed and effective pattern. While clients use NeurOptimal® for many reasons, they typically describe:~ their concerns and fears dropping away, ~ feeling more clear and present in their daily lives, ~ experiencing a greater ability for focus and awareness, ~ feeling more motivated with greater clarity, ~ an increased sense of lightness and joy.

How to treat heel pain IF YOUR HEEL HURTS FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, OR IT FEELS LIKE YOU’RE WALKING ON STONES, IT COULD BE PLANTAR FASCIITIS. What is Plantar Fasciitis? In our practices, heel pain is one of the most common conditions our podiatrists see. Plantar Fasciitis is a common condition causing severe pain under the heel bone. Generally the pain is worse the first few steps in the morning, towards the end of the day or after sport and exercise. The pain is caused by micro tears to the plantar fascia (the long tight cord under the arch) at the attachment point under the heel bone. Left untreated, the pain may persist for up to 18 months. What does the pain feel like? People with Plantar Fasciitis generally experience pain in the heel, with the pain often described as dull, sharp or burning pain. The condition can affect one or both feet. Who gets Plantar Fasciitis? Plantar Fasciitis is seen in people of all ages, but specifically in those aged between 35 – 65 years of age. The condition affects both active and non-active people.

With some recent chilly mornings, winter (or at least our North Queensland equivalent) is definitely approaching and Dr Petra Watson from Little Sprouts Chiropractic has put together some easy ways to boost your immunity and stay healthy.
1. Keep hydrated – just because it isn’t as hot don’t forget to keep drinking water! On average, we need to be drinking 1L of water per 25kg of body weight regardless of the temperature outside. Especially if you are feeling under the weather as it helps to flush out toxicity. 2. Eat well – Temporarily avoid mucus producing foods like dairy, as well as highly processed and sugary foods. Fill up on natural super foods like dark leafy greens, garlic and ginger. Let ‘food be thy medicine ‘and use these foods to encourage your body to heal itself. Probiotics, Vitamin C, Echinacea and Olive Leaf extract are also helpful supplements but always consult with your primary healthcare provider to ensure these are right for your body. 3. Rest – Don’t fight your body! If you come down with a cold or flu, let it rest as that’s the most effective way for your body to recover. When our body rests, our parasympathetic nervous system is activated, and this is when healing can occur. Stress takes your body away from this system, so partake in methods of stress reduction. 4. Diffuse and inhale – Essential oils are great for breaking down mucus membranes, clearing airways and increasing white blood cell circulation. Particularly oregano, eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon – just make sure they are good quality oils and not synthetic fragrances. Use a few drops in a diffuser or a bowl of hot water for steam inhalation. 5. Get adjusted – research shows that within 15 minutes of a Chiropractic adjustment, immune markers in the blood are elevated. (1) These immune markers help to strengthen and promote the immune system. Whether you are already noticing symptoms or just want to boost your immunity – it’s a great idea to have your nervous system functioning at its best with Chiropractic care.

Winter Is Here! Be Cold & Flu Smart...
The term Emotional Intelligence was popularised by Daniel Goleman in his 1995 New York Times bestseller. Goleman examined how knowing and managing one’s emotions, motivating oneself, recognising emotions in others, and handling relationships skilfully are central to happy and successful lives. Far more than we are consciously aware, our daily encounters with students, parents, spouses, bosses, and even strangers shape our brains and affect our bodies’ cells — for good or ill. Our reactions to others have a far-reaching biological impact, sending out hormones that regulate everything from our hearts to our immune systems, making good relationships act like vitamins—and bad relationships like poisons. Goleman reports that studies found ‘social and emotional learning’ programmes in schools not only improved student behaviour but also led to a “strong benefit in academic achievement”. Developing students’ EI will help them grow strong friendships, co-operate effectively, and influence others. A renewed focus on EI may be necessary in a world where some children have reduced levels of social contact. Research suggests that through social contact children observe the emotions of others by picking up on facial expression, physical posture and tone of voice. Concerns about safety and security mean fewer children are playing together and the digital revolution has resulted in a greater number of children spending more time in virtual environments. Without well-developed EI, future generations may lack the essential human qualities of empathy and care. Parents and teachers need to ensure children get plenty of time to interact offline. They can help children spot the nonverbal clues that reveal how others feel, to understand and manage their own emotions and motivations. They can also help children stay ‘in the now’, which is conducive to a rich life experience.

Matt Golinski impresses at Mackay’s new Farmer's Market Mackay are you ready to create delicious, seasonally fresh cuisine? Ready, steady, cook! A famous face from the popular ‘Ready Steady Cook’ television series, celebrity chef, Matt Golinski, was in Mackay for the launch of the Greater Whitsundays Farmers’ Market as well as for the Queensland Week Farm to Plate Dinner held at the MECC. With a passion for creating yummy cuisine using fresh, seasonal and local ingredients, Matt was in his element at the market, where he cooked local delicacies including mud crab in front of an enthusiastic audience of foodies. Sitting on hay bales, and crowding around to catch a glimpse of the master at work, the Mackay audience hung on every word of Matt’s as he demonstrated how a few fresh ingredients could harmonise to create a hit of flavour. Core Magazine’s journalist Amanda Wright, caught up with Matt to find out what his highlights were from his time in Mackay. What was your highlight from the Greater Whitsundays Farmers’ Market? “One of the most striking things about the GWFM was how vibrant and alive all of the produce looked. The freshly picked corn, live mud crabs,
68 www.corelife.com.au
glowing boxes of herbs and lettuces and bursting ripe strawberries that you could smell from across the markets, will all stick in my memory.” Was there any produce that you found at the market which was of particular delight? “It was great to see things like okra, flat beans, heirloom tomatoes, sweet peppers, Russian garlic, free-range eggs and pork, and a whole array of fresh fish in the markets. It’s this diversity and seasonality that makes shopping at a farmers market a special experience.” What fresh ingredients excite you most from the Mackay region? “I love the access to super fresh seafood when I’m in the region. Wild caught Barramundi and fresh mud crabs are a couple of my favourite things to eat, and you guys have both of those in abundance.” What did you enjoy from the Farm to Plate evening? “Apart from meeting and getting to know the producers whose ingredients I used for my dish, I also got the chance to meet and work with four great chefs from the region. Kristy Borg, Andrew Spindler, Arron Macklin and Darren Deacon all prepared a course for the dinner and now I have four new friends!”
GET TO KNOW MATT GOLINSKI Favourite overseas destination A hard one to choose, but for produce and great people I’d have to say Turkey. They sure know how to eat well and they understand hospitality better than anyone in the world. Most beautiful place visited in Australia Mackay and Whitsunday region of course! Two of my very favourite places in Australia are Eungella and Cape Hillsborough, so that whole area rates very high on my list. Favourite comfort food Yesterday I made a big tray of coq au vin, duck fat potatoes and a simple green salad, followed by apple and prune crumble for dessert for some friends who were coming over for lunch. You don’t get any more comfort than that on a cold drizzly day. Most versatile ingredient to cook with I love using fennel in dishes; raw, roasted, sautéed, pureed, in soup, caramelized, and pickled. It’s also as good in savoury dishes as it is in desserts. First dish you were taught to create When I was a boy I was obsessed with making bread. I loved the chemistry of what was going on and used to harass the local baker for advice. Favourite activity when you’re not cooking I love long distance running and playing music. I’m a frustrated wannabee rock star. Most useful kitchen utensil My beautiful Japanese cooks knife. Having a sharp knife that suits your hand is the single most important thing you need in a kitchen. Everyone should have one.

to Plate Dinner CELEBRATING THE LAUNCH OF THE MACKAY FARMERS MARKET Approximately 3000 people attended the opening day of the Greater Whitsunday Farmers Market at Wood Street Park, Mackay City Centre on Wednesday June 8. There were 14 stalls representing 40 individual farmers, fisherman and value adders. The market came alive with Mackay locals and tourists excited to see a broad range of fresh, locally produced goods for sale. Offerings included pawpaw’s, strawberries, pineapples, corn, lettuce, tomatoes, capsicum, cucumbers, green beans, eggplant, seafood, eggs, pork, beef, sauces, relishes, chutneys, cordial, ice-cream and honey. 70 www.corelife.com.au
All produce and products were grown or made locally within the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region. The market was so busy several stallholders had to return to their farms to pick and pack more produce to meet with the demand on the day. Guests were thrilled to experience the smells, tastes and sounds of the market, sampling delicious local food and returning home with their bags full of fresh produce. The festivities continued on Thursday June 9 with Queensland Week Farm to Plate Dinner organized by the Greater Whitsunday Food Network. Matt Golinski oversaw preparation of the dishes with support from four local chefs; Darren Deacon (Clarion Hotel), Kristy Borg (Curb), K&Co and 9th Lane Grind, Andrew Spindler (Coral Cay

Plus a range of accompanying ingredients such as micro herbs, radish, sweet corn, garlic, kale, okra, ricotta and honey. It’s wonderful to see Mackay celebrating fresh produce and supporting local producers. MACKAY
Favourite food: Cheese, cheese and cheese or nice home-made Porchetta (maybe with a cheese stuffing)
Favourite food and why: Vietnamese just so simple and fresh especially fresh spring roll. Favourite celebrity chef and why: Roy Keane from Manchester United because he is so good . . . ha ha, only joking! I don’t really have a cooking hero but I do have Donna Hay cook books and I love reading them because the photography is so good. What do you like most about working at George’s Thai? The owner, she really spoils me! Plus, we have an amazing location at Mackay Marina. I enjoy seeing people have sunset drinks before I cook them a delicious Thai meal served by our friendly staff. What is so special about the type of food you serve at George’s Thai? Me! I am an authentic Thai chef and I bring the flavor of Thailand to your plate. I cook everything with love and we have a great team that will look after you from start to finish. Tell us a little bit about your life and where you are from: I am from a small town called Amnatcharoen in the northeast of Thailand. I have been living in Mackay since 2011 and I love Mackay more than anywhere else in this world. I have a few good mates and lovely friends and I wish to live here forever. In one sentence, tell us what is so special about a George’s Thai experience? Come to George’s Thai for a taste of Bangkok, just down the road.
Favourite celebrity chef: Gordon Ramsay with his ability to simplify menus and get back to basic from scratch recipes. Also, he is hilarious to watch! What is your signature dish? Two dishes come to mind, our crackled pork belly with smokey bbq gravy and char-grilled toffee apple or our Egyptian pistachio and sesame crusted salmon with béarnaise and toasted lime. Where does your passion for food come from? Initially it was the industry that appealed to me at the age of 17, being surrounded by food, alcohol, live music and people enjoying themselves. Not to mention the sleep-ins (if you didn’t get a breaky shift). But I think in time, traveling and experiencing other cultures and the major impact cuisine has on family and friends has been how I’ve kept my passion after almost 16 years in the industry. Why dine with us? Our kitchen prides itself on being a non-pretentious from-scratch bistro. We serve fresh in-house crumbed steaks, chicken, fish, kievs, seafood baskets etc. Our ‘make your own burger’ lunch deals and the best selection of parmigiana’s in town. All this makes the decision to come dine with us easy!
Peach and Pear Catering WHITSUNDAYS Name: Gabi Harding Favourite food: Homemade pizza made by my husband (dough included) Favourite celebrity chef: Too many, but I’d have to say Nigella Lawson (probably because she is curvy, healthy and eats real food) What’s your signature dish? For Peach & Pear, it would have to be my Spanish Tortilla. Personally though, I like anything Italian. Where does your passion for food come from? As a descendant of Italian and Polish grandparents I was always interested in keeping our traditions alive. I have always enjoyed cooking for my family and close friends. Plus, I love food! Tell us a little bit about your life and where you are from: Originally from South America, I moved to Adelaide with my family when I was 7 years old. I later lived in Darwin and moved to Airlie Beach 16 years ago with my daughter, Kate. My husband and I currently live on acreage with our dog and our cat (who also thinks she is a dog). We have recently purchased 195 acres of land and plan to run (beef) cattle, so my food affair continues. I love a challenge, I love hard work and I think that a combination of both has brought me to where I am today. In one sentence, tell us what is so special about a Peach and Pear experience? CAPE HILLSBOROUGH BLOKART REGATTA AUDI HAMILTON ISLAND RACE WEEK SATURDAY 20TH – SATURDAY 27TH AUGUST
Audi Hamilton Island Race Week is one of Australia’s favourite yachting events and a firm fixture on the international sailing calendar. Competitors, family and friends come together to enjoy the convivial atmosphere and unique camaraderie of the event’s on-water and off-water carnival. Every August, spectators and yachties from around the globe sail to Hamilton Island for Audi Hamilton Island Race Week - Australia’s largest offshore keelboat regatta. Race Week was conceived by David Hutchen in 1983, after he had moved to the Whitsundays with his yacht “Banjo Paterson” to start a yacht charter business. David was able to convince the then owner and founder of Hamilton Island, Keith Williams, to agree to hosting the event as a way of generating tourism and favourable media attention to the resort.
SUNDAY 10TH JULY
Held on the stunning Cape Hillsborough National Park beach frontage that is famous for it’s wallabies at dawn and the cheeky kangaroos the annual Blokart Regatta is a site to behold! The eighth annual Regatta will see karts flying across the sand up to and over 100 kilometres per hour! Many visitors stop to watch, photograph and chat to the friendly Blokart sailors who are always more than happy to answer the questions that visitors tend to ask. There are no spectator entry fees at this event and visitors are also welcome to partake of the sausage sizzle and drinks stall which will be operating on the beach throughout the day.The club also sets up several large gazebos on the beach and if there is room to spare in the shade; visiting spectators are welcome to set up their folding chairs in these areas. It could well be said that it has achieved iconic status in the eyes of Queensland’s Blokarting community. This is not only because of the magical location in which it is staged but also because of the meticulous planning that goes into the event and the highly professional manner in which it is run. B
Most people will know Ben Southall as the winner of the Best Job in the World. In 2009, he successfully beat 35,000 other applicants to win the prestigious role as ‘Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef’, which included a tasty salary package and a year living on Hamilton Island. Ben, however, is much more than a winner of a lucrative prize. He is a deeply passionate, positive person who loves travel, loves adventure and, most importantly, loves his natural environment, especially the Great Barrier Reef. Ben’s love for the reef comes from the 4 months he spent exploring 1600 kms of the Great Barrier Reef on a hobie kayak. His favourite spot on this trip was Middle Percy Island, just off the coast of Mackay. The island is only accessible to passing yachties and has an A-frame building, which is decorated by a collection of trinkets and personal motifs left by other visitors. When Ben arrived he was invited to sit down on the sand with two fellow travellers who had just opened a coconut, offering it to him with a dash of sparkling wine. Exploring the Great Barrier Reef was an eye-opening experience for Ben, but not as you may think. His travels opened his eyes to the beauty and wonder of the reef and he was surprised to see that the media hype about its declining health was largely exaggerated. Since then, Ben has been passionate about inspiring people to be more positive about the reef as he is concerned negative talk will deter international visitors. To raise awareness, Ben has used his roles with Tourism and Events Queensland and other tourism bodies to create a positive story about the reef. Being a spokesperson for the natural environment is a subject Ben feels passionate about. When asked why he loves to travel so much, Ben says it is the best way he learns. Despite a formal education, Ben calls his best teacher, the world. Ben doesn’t just want to see the world, he wants to experience the world. He has completed marathons, holds the record for the fastest ascent of the tallest mountain in each state in Australia - the
Aussie 8 - and completed the 9 Great Walks of New Zealand in 9 days. He recounts, the hardest part was trying to sleep in the back of a camper van while it flew along winding mountain roads towards its next destination. Recently, Ben embarked on a 12 month, 55,000km overland adventure from Singapore to London with his wife Sophee. The two made the journey in Ben’s Land Rover which he bought in England in 2004. The Land Rover has since been shipped all around the world, from Africa to Australia and finally to Asia. They followed the exact trail (in reverse) of Tim Slessor who wrote a best-selling book called First Overland. This is a story about the first overland journey in a Land Rover from London to Singapore in 1955. Ben loved the story (and his Land Rover!) so much, he was determined to give it a go. When asked about his favourite moment on the long overland journey he remembers a split moment decision when Sophee and he were standing at the most southern point of Spain, the Rock of Gibraltar. Ben has a deepseated love for Africa and had spent six years living there. As he stood with Sophee, gazing across the sea towards the large desert land, it was a cold wintery day and he craved to set foot on African soil once again. Spontaneously, the pair decided to take the ferry over and spend two weeks enjoying themselves in North Africa, reaching the Sahara Desert and exploring Marrakesh. After almost 12 months travelling through some

their wedding, you guessed it, back in the Whitsundays, four years ago on Hamilton Island.
After travelling overseas for a year, it has also been 18 months since he has been back to the Whitsundays and spent time on the Great Barrier Reef. Throughout his life, the Whitsunday region has kept an important place in his heart. Not only does it represent his passion for natural environments and being a spokesperson for them, the area also represents success in life and love.
It is with great excitement the Whitsunday region welcomes Ben Southall and his wife, Sophee, back to the Whitsundays this year as the keynote speaker at the Whitsunday Writers Festival. Now in its seventh year, the festival has enticed other household names, like Peter Fitzsimons and Jessica Watson. This year, the festival will be held at Lure, Abell Point Marina from Friday September 2 until Sunday September 4.
The Whitsunday region was where he launched his career as winner of the Best Job in the World to which, in 2015, he has written a book with the same title. The Whitsundays is also the place where he met the love of his life, Sophee. Ben was an MC on Daydream Island when he shared a ‘flirt and a bit of a pash’ with a girl he just met. The next day, they both happened to be on the same plane heading back to Brisbane and it turned out they both lived in the same city and shared a passion for travel. After a few dates Ben knew he wanted to marry Sophee and they celebrated
Ben was chosen, not only for his writing skills, but also because of his love for the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. He has a huge array of adventures and life experiences to share with his audience. His positive perspective about the environment and the world is contagious. To be inspired and enthralled by a Great Barrier Reef ambassador, and a generally great human character, come to the 2016 Whitsunday Writers Festival.

ARE YOU GOING THROUGH A SEPARATION? IF SO, FIND OUT YOUR RIGHTS BY COMING TO ONE OF OUR
FREE INFORMATION NIGHTS.
Family Law and Superannuation AT OUR FREE INFORMATION NIGHTS WE WILL TALK TO YOU ABOUT PROPERTY SETTLEMENT ISSUES SUCH AS SUPERANNUATION SPLITTING.
• IS SUPERANNUATION TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN PROPERTY SETTLEMENTS? Yes - superannuation is treated as property when dealing with a family law settlement and is considered when determining how the assets and liabilities of the relationship are divided. It is important to ask for, and review, superannuation statements when negotiating a property settlement, as often it can be one of the biggest assets of a relationship. The law allows separating couples to value their superannuation and split superannuation interests. • HOW IS SUPERANNUATION “SPLIT”? To split superannuation a Court Order or Binding Financial Agreement is required. A Court Order can be obtained by agreement without the need to attend at court and this is called a Consent Order. Alternatively, a Court Order can be made following a contested hearing. The following steps need to occur: • The superannuation fund needs to consent to the agreement, before they are required to comply with any Court Order; • The Court Order needs to be served on the superannuation fund; • To action the split, the superannuation interest is divided within the existing fund and a new account is opened in the name of the person receiving the split of superannuation; • It is usually then possible for the interest to be “rolled out” of the original fund into a preferred fund. • CAN I RECEIVE SUPER AS CASH? Splitting superannuation does not convert it into a cash asset. It is still subject to superannuation laws. For example, it is usually retained until retirement ages are reached. Subject to the funds’ regulations and your financial situation, you may be able to apply for the release of a small portion of funds on hardship grounds.
