Settle for only the best in 2015. In April 12, 1904 Thomas Abell was the first European settler in Airlie Beach discovering a beautiful mainland base to bring up a family and establish a living. Soon after settling, Thomas invited his family and friends to come and discover the beauty of the Whitsundays and share in the opportunity to develop a future for the Abell family. To recognise the first settlements of the Abell family, Abell Point invites you to refer a friend to re-discover the revitalised marina experience. Just like the first European settlers invited their friends to the visit the region, refer a friend to Abell Point Marina and receive 10% off your next booking and 5% off for your friend. Be certain, a new standard in Marinas has been set.

Abell Point Marina – expect the ‘blue carpet’ treatment.

WIN the ultimate SKIN CARE package valued at $4200 FROM SENSORIUM SKIN TECHNOLOGY INCLUDING ipl photo rejuvenation / full at home skincare range / jane iredale makeup and in salon facial treatments / ipl hair reduction bikini & underarm for 12 months

Following up on last month and the overwhelming feedback I have received from business owners across all industries and regions, the message seems to be the same. If you can’t adapted, you will die. Scary, but so true… You have to learn to pivot and not be scared to make the changes you need to keep your business alive. It’s time to spring clean, look at your figures, do a budget and a forecasted cash flow, and remember these are two completely different things. A budget is based on your costs and projected sales. A cash flow is all about reality, what is in your bank account, what real sales are coming in and what bills you have to pay and when. Based on this, look at where you can cut back and reduce expenses. Get rid of staff that aren’t preforming. You don’t have the time and money to put energy into staff who are not giving you a positive result. Stop knocking on a door, which no longer opens. Look up and workout not only where your business position is today, but where it will be months ahead. Be prepared for what is coming and make the changes you need to NOW! In This Issue – May/June Check out our “money matters” feature for tips and advice on getting you financially fit and celebrate the amazing women in businesses that know what it takes to survive. EXPERIENCE THE SYNERGY DIFFERENCE TODAY

GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL

SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS

At Synergy, we are able to plan for any self-managed superannuation fund, from start up to providing pensions. Thinking of buying or selling a business? We are able to advise on: • Business Appraisals • Business Valuations We are also Small Business Capital Gains Tax specialists. To experience the Synergy difference, come in and meet with our friendly team to discuss your financial and taxation needs.

TAX PLANNING Tax planning - what’s involved and why do it?

At Synergy we offer tax planning to all our clients and this is a list of some of the reasons why: • Nasty tax surprises – no one likes them • Restructuring opportunities – can only happen before 30 June, after is too late. • Tax minimisation opportunities – again, they have to happen before 30 June. • Business improvement opportunities – if you don’t have a tax problem, why not? • Have you paid too much tax already – in company or personal instalments? • If you do have a tax problem – we have plenty of time to plan your cash flow. I have had clients say to me “I don’t think I’m going to have a tax problem this year”. Many people think because they have no money in the bank that means they can’t possibly have to pay tax. Unfortunately, that is often not the case as cash can be tied up in debtors, buying new equipment or paying off debt. This can leave you cash poor but still with tax to pay. We calculate the tax down to an individual level using different strategies and may create up to ten plans before we come up with the answer that we think is the best solution. It is important to have a sound understanding of how your business is performing before the end of year arrives. In many cases, there will still be tax to pay. Another area of tax planning is assisting with your cash flow to prepare you for this. Just because you may not have had a tax bill in prior years does not necessarily mean that it will apply during the current year. Penalties and interest applied by the Australian Taxation Office for late payments are severe but avoidable with a good strategy in place.

Either way tax planning is an important part of running a successful business.

LOOKING AT AN INVESTMENT PROPERTY IN BRISBANE?

BUILD AN INCOME STREAM OUTSIDE YOUR NORMAL SUPER People are becoming increasingly concerned about the future of their superannuation and with good reason because of our government’s record of changing the rules. ONLY LAST MONTH THE AUSTRALIAN LABOUR PARTY ADVOCATED SUPERANNUATION INCOME TAX INCREASES FOR HIGH INCOME AUSTRALIANS.

E T A E CR ALTH X E A W ET V A S

It is very likely that in the future you will receive your superannuation in the form of an annuity i.e. you will not get your superannuation in a lump sum but as a form of pension. Read this recent story from “The Age” ‘Australians entering retirement will most likely be stopped from taking their superannuation as a lump sum and will have to access it through a structured self-funded pension, a top Treasury official says. ‘Treasury executive director and chief operating officer, John Lonsdale, signalled that recommendations for the financial system inquiry put forward to overhaul superannuation are likely to be adopted.’ The most effective way to protect your capital and income from inflation and to avoid the effect of ever changing rules is to build a portfolio of residential properties making use of negative gearing and federal Government income tax incentive to create new housing. Whilst I call this “Real Superannuation”, it is outside the restrictive and ever changing rules that govern the superannuation industry and provides a far greater “profit on funds employed” If, however, you already have at least $125,000 in super and wish to build a residential property portfolio in a S.M.S.F. (Self Managed Super Fund) we are happy to assist in this regard. - STEVE TAYLOR

Reflections of the Whitsunday Small Business Advisor... DEB LEWIS: SMALL BUSINESS ADVISOR WHITSUNDAYS MARKETING & DEVELOPMENT.

AS I HURTLE TOWARDS THE END OF THE LAST QUARTER OF MY 18 MONTH ROLE AS THE WHITSUNDAYS SMALL BUSINESS ADVISOR, IT’S ONLY NATURAL TO REFLECT ON SOME OF THE KEY LEARNINGS I HAVE PERSONALLY GAINED BY WORKING WITH BUSINESSES ACROSS THE REGION. HERE ARE 9 OF THE MANY TIPS, TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES THAT I HAVE GATHERED AS BUSINESS ADVISOR, A PERSONAL THANKS TO THE MANY BUSINESSES THAT HAVE WORKED WITH ME ACROSS THE WHITSUNDAY REGION.

1. ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING!

With a positive attitude, anything is possible. When you believe it, you will see it! Surround yourself with people who are positive, supportive and constructive. Avoid those that look to blame others and only see the negative. Both perspectives are highly contagious. On a daily basis, are you focused on the issues or the solutions? TIP > ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT TECHNIQUE: LIGHT UP WITH A SMILE, AND WATCH THE RESULTS.

2. BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS

To engage in business, people need to exchange goods and services with others - and the best customers, staff, suppliers and service providers you will have, are those you develop strong relationships with. Be genuine (and true to your personal values) in all your relationships, invest in a ‘win-win’ outcome when engaging in business transactions. There is no doubt that the owner’s relationships make or break the business.

3. LEAD BY EXAMPLE

As a Business owner, you are a participating member of your community; you WILL influence others whether you realise it or not. It is essential to invest in personal and professional development. There is always something we can do to improve ourselves. Self-awareness, mindfulness, solid values, integrity, confidence, health and wellbeing are the kinds of attributes that make a leader. A great business owner will lead by example in all they do. TIP > WHEN A BUSINESS OWNER BECOMES A LEADER, THERE IS A CHANGE IN MINDSET THAT DIRECTLY AND POSITIVELY IMPACTS ON OVERALL BUSINESS PERFORMANCE.

4. ADOPT AN ENTREPRENEURIAL MODEL

Many of us end up in a business because we are good at something and then shock and horror, we find out there is so much more to do and there aren’t enough hours in the day or grey matter in our heads to be good at everything that is required of us. As business owners we need to understand the difference between working in the business and working on the business. Ask yourself are you a technician, manager or entrepreneur? Are you

struggling to do everything in your business because you can’t afford to do it any other way? TIP > MICHAEL GERBER’S E- MYTH IS A MUST READ BOOK EVERY BUSINESS OWNER THAT WANTS TO ADOPT AN ENTREPRENEURIAL BUSINESS MODEL.

5. LANGUAGE

Think about the language and framing you use - is it positive or negative? Monitor your self talk - are your berating or being supportive of yourself? Monitoring use of particular words and phrases will give insight into yourself and others. For example, people instinctively are fearful of change yet change is inevitable. For business purposes, consider replacing the word change with innovation to invoke a different emotive response. Innovation infers excitement and can be accepted and owned more readily than change in any workplace.

6. EMBRACE CUSTOMERS’ CONCERNS OR COMPLAINTS

Customer feedback provides invaluable market research and directly assists continuous improvement in your business. Embracing the opportunity to engage with a dissatisfied customer to resolve their concerns, will usually result in a ‘raving fan’ who will then continue to maintain a long term and valuable relationship with your business, while recommending you to others. TIP > REWARD YOUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS AND ASK FOR THEIR FEEDBACK!

7. PLAN, PLAN AND KEEP PLANNING! When it comes to growing a healthy and sustainable business, as an owner, you need to keep moving your goal posts forward, not side wards and remember to recognise and celebrate even the smallest ‘win’. Be true to your vision and regularly engage your team so everyone is heading in the same direction. Your business plan does not necessarily need to be a version of War and Peace, but it does need to get the owner’s thoughts and ideas crystallised into a document that provides direction for the business with clearly identified, achievable and measurable goals. As the owner, be prepared to challenge your performance against your long term vision. TIP > TRACK AND MEASURE EVERYTHING!

The services provided by Whitsunday Marketing and Development Small Business Advisor are funded by the Australian Government

“Small business is a high priority for Whitsunday Marketing and Development’s Economic Development team. Small business underpins the local economy and it’s our mission to support them to build their capacity and capability, leverage opportunities and trends, be productive and profitable whilst adapting to the ever shifting economic and market flows.”says Denise Kreymborg Economic Development Manager pictured with Deb Lewis Small Business Advisor.

8. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

As a business owner, at times you will feel isolated, lost, and quite possibly despairing. Usually this is when you really feel the huge burden of pressure, stress, and responsibility. It’s natural, normal and inevitable. Reach out to other business owners. Share your stories and your pain points as other owners will also value the opportunity to share their experiences. TIP > NETWORKS DIRECTLY BENEFIT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS - BE PREPARED TO SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES - BE AUTHENTIC!

9. BE AWARE OF WELL-BEING!

Well-being for everyone in your workplace underpins performance and profits. Is everyone in your workplace ok? How are their overall safety, well-being and stress levels? Are problems at home interfering with work or vice versa? All business owners have a duty of care to ensure the safety and well-being of those in our workplaces. Have you assessed the cost of absenteeism, staff turnover, poor performance and accidents? TIP > RELEVANT READING MATERIAL AND INFORMATION ON SUPPORT SERVICES FOR MAINTAINING HEALTH AND Well-being READILY AVAILABLE IN THE WORKPLACE PROVIDES A VALUABLE RESOURCE - A WORTHWHILE STRATEGY.

unexpected quiet period? what do you do?

What do you do when you find yourself in an unexpected quiet period in your business? Quieter than it ever has ever been before? You tell people about your business, otherwise known as ‘marketing’! Businesses, large and small, usually go into ‘buckle up’ mode in a downturn. They tighten their belts and watch their cash flow even more closely than normal. This usually includes a review of the budget and chopping any excess spending out of it. Unfortunately, all too often the marketing budget is deemed as an ‘excess spending’ and it gets the chop too! The thing is, it is in these quieter times that it is more important than ever to ensure you are at the top of the mind for your clients. Yes, clearly they aren’t spending and normal behavioural patterns may be on hold. However, you want to ensure that should they need to buy, the first thing they think about is your business. How can that happen if you have completely dropped off the radar?

paper once a week, or a targeted social media advertising campaign for the first week of each month. Whatever it may be, if you decide on a strategy, ensure you know your goals and see the campaign through to the end. Of course, be smart about where you invest your marketing dollars and consider all the available options out there. There are plenty! Whatever you choose, don’t choose to fall off the radar by not doing any advertising or marketing at all. PS. Google updated its algorithm on 21st April, which included major changes to the way that websites are ranked when searched on mobile devices or tablets. Do your customers search on these devices? I think yes! If this could affect your website and business, visit our website for more information. www.8seconds.com.au. Marketing campaigns rarely work overnight. Establishing a position in your customers’ mind is a result of a committed and consistent presence throughout both busy and quiet periods and this does not have to mean spending thousands of dollars! Maybe you have a regular spot in the

MONEY-SMART TRICKS TO

HELP YOU SAVE MORE Saving money is an easy calculation. In theory.

Simply earn more, spend less. Simple right? Not so much. Many of us get into the habit of spending for the sake of it. We spend like there’s no tomorrow! If there’s money in our accounts, there must be something we NEED to spend it on. It’s time to change the way you think about money, and get smart to save more.

So make Domain One your number one choice call Aileen Fahl 0418 760 199 or email aileen@domainone.net.au

money matters Swap a bad habit for a frugal one

You may not think that your twice-daily soy chai latte is a bad habit, however, if it’s costing you more than you can afford, then it is detrimental to your financial health. Make a promise to cut down to 3 coffees per week instead of 10 and proudly slide $30 cash in your piggy bank as your reward. If you’re a social butterfly you may find yourself spending serious cash after work and on the weekends on drinks and nibbles. Offer to sober drive every now and then and slip a cool $100 note into your piggy bank that you saved from not drinking alcohol. The financial buzz is a much more satisfying feeling, with no messy hangover!

Mind trick

Don’t think of cutting down as punishment, instead learn to savour the moment of when you do allow yourself a treat. A savoured treat is far more satisfying than a frequent habit.

Cancel one unnecessary bill

Put off your purchase

There are some things you need to pay on time. Credit card bills, your rent or mortgage, utility bills, insurance. However, all the money that is unnecessarily spent each month is usually due to a spur-of-the-moment decision. That purse that looked too cute to pass up. The moisturiser you brought online because it was on sale but you didn’t really need it. The list goes on. New rule! If it’s not a critical payment, sleep on it. Don’t buy it right away. If you wake tomorrow and you still want it, because you can absolutely justify its purchase, then buy it. However, if you forget all about it because it wasn’t essential at all, you’ve already saved money. Saving money certainly isn’t easy, but it is simple. All it takes is thought every time you reach for your EFTPOS card. Do you really need that? Is it a necessity? Can you hire it instead of buying new? Can you borrow off a friend? Do you really NEED it? The more often you ask yourself the hard questions, the better your savings will become.

Are you paying for satellite television just because of one favourite show? Do you really need a home phone and a cellphone? Can you downgrade your plan? Take a close look at the bills you are paying and make an effort to eliminate one. Get tech-savvy and find out how to (legally) stream the shows you like to watch. The money you save per month should be invested into a debt which you are paying interest on, whether it is a personal loan or credit card. If you are debt-free, then the money translates into instant savings!

Clear the clutter

Getting rid of a heap of unnecessary possessions can be a liberating experience. The clothes you don’t wear, the appliances you never use, the fitness gear that never gets touched. Have a garage sale or sell your stuff online and pocket the profits!

meet the team Growing up in Bundaberg, Justin Butler can sum up his upbringing in three words; sport, sport and more sport. From shooting, billiards and darts, to athletics, lifesaving, volleyball and soccer, Justin loved nothing more than getting active and challenging himself from sport to sport. He played rugby league for Brother’s until under 18’s and, rugby union for the Bundaberg Turtles as a junior and Bowen Mudcrabs as a senior. While his parents tried to persuade Justin to go to university after finishing high school, Justin couldn’t see the fun in having no income for four or more years. He had always had a talent for numbers and was offered positions at both ANZ and Westpac. He chose Westpac. A career which saw him quickly progress to head teller, in charge of the largest branch outside of Brisbane, and then transferred to a tiny town between Mt Isa and Birdsville called Boulia, as the second-in-charge of the branch. He was only 20 when he received his financial planning qualifications and then shifted to Bowen to become the youngest business lender at the time. He was full-time financial planning by the time he was 23. After becoming the senior business financial planner for the Mackay region from 1999 to 2003, Justin started his own financial planning business, Eclipse Financial Services. “I wanted to be able to help clients with a greater scope than what was being offered by the bank. After 10 years of financial planning in the Mackay area, I already had 1,000 clients. However, bank policy meant I was expected to grow this number by a further 100 per year. I wanted the opportunity to provide a better service to clients, to develop longer-term relationships. I would rather grow the numbers in my client’s bank accounts than grow the number of clients I have on my books,” Justin said. With three children under 10 years old, Justin relies on a strong family network to balance work and life. “My wife Susan is part of the Gummow cabinetmaking clan from Bowen, which means Grandma and Poppy are just up the road for our children Tate, Sabine and Noelle to visit,” he said.

money matters Nick Haratsis With a love of playing computer games, Nick Haratsis began his career as a promising information technology professional, but while studying his MBA, he was drawn to finance and accounting. “Transitioning from IT into finance was a testing journey, yet very rewarding. I’ve found my passion and I’m grateful to have the knowledge and experience to help others achieve their financial goals.” “I have two children, aged eight and six, who love the lagoon and spending time on or in the water. I take my son fishing and it’s a challenge to see who will become the fisherman of the day, Nick said. At Eclipse Financial Services, Nick is a senior financial adviser, specialising in investment, superannuation, retirement planning, Centrelink and personal insurance. “I have the pleasure of working with my clients to help them visualise, verbalise and put into action their goals and objectives. With 15 years of investment experience, I can draw on my own experience to provide realistic and achievable outcomes for my clients,” he said. Something you might not know about Nick While living in Sydney, Nick decided to visit the set of Sunrise, where he had the opportunity to meet Kochie and the team.

She joined Eclipse in 2006 and is the first point of contact for clients as a senior client manager. Michelle oversees the preparation of financial documentation and handles the administration. “My hours are from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. which allows the flexibility of being able to drop my daughter off at the bus and then be at home when she finishes. My partner, Brett, is also my rock. His support makes it possible, us all to achieve a great work life balance. Something you might not know about Michelle As an 18-year-old, Michelle was watching a knife thrower perform at the Eton Hotel, after a little encouragement from her friends Michelle felt confident enough to volunteer as his next assistant. New over 50s’ resort sets a record Sunshine Coast property expert Victoria Dent reports unprecedented activity in the over 50s residential resort market. Victoria says years of sales experience confirms the Sunshine Coast is an over 50s’ favourite. “My experience at the former Hyatt Resort at Coolum, more recently with Living Gems Sunstone Gardens at Maleny and now at Crystal by Living Gems in Pacific Paradise, shows the Sunshine Coast is a premier retirement location.

“This secure, pet friendly gated community will have managers to take care of the facilities, grounds and home owners’ front lawns. Resort facilities will include a country club with dining areas and a bar, a grand ballroom with a theatre stage and a private cinema.

“The excitement about Crystal by Living Gems surpasses all previous sales results and forecasts. The Pacific Paradise resort has captured the attention of buyers from all over Queensland, interstate and a few overseas buyers,” Victoria says.

“Residents and their guests have exclusive use of a magnificent swimming pool and spa. The pool pavilion and barbecue area is designed for relaxed entertaining. Lifestyle facilities include a gym, a fully covered and floodlit bowling green and a tennis court.

Crystal by Living Gems is the latest development from the industry’s leading over 50s’ lifestyle resort specialist. Living Gems has built and managed master planned communities for active over 50s since the early ‘80s. The company now has resorts in Brisbane, on the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

“There are no entry fees, exit fees, stamp duties or rates to pay. People can enjoy the lifestyle and if they choose to sell at any time they retain all of their capital gain. Crystal by Living Gems exceeds buyers’ expectations at every level. It’s hardly surprising that sales are at record levels,” Victoria says.

Independent international assessors recently voted Living Gems Active Over 50s’ Lifestyle Resorts the Best in Australasia. Victoria says Crystal by Living Gems will surpass even this high standard.

For more information visit www.crystalresort.com.au or call Victoria on 1800 279 782.

“This residential resort sets a new benchmark in style, value and quality. It appeals to people who want the best of everything in an idyllic location,” she says. “Crystal by Living Gems is designed for people who are still in the workforce, running a business, those who are planning retirement and retirees who want to make the most of their leisure time. “The onsite sales office at 596 David Low Way, Pacific Paradise is now open. Although building has not yet commenced, we have already sold 10 homes.” “The location is a drawcard; the resort is a two minute drive or 20 minute stroll from golden beaches, village style shopping precincts, medical facilities and a modern hospital. Noosa and Caloundra are within a 20 minute drive and Brisbane can be reached in little more than an hour.” Victoria says Living Gems multi-award winning lifestyle resorts are all about people. “Crystal by Living Gems is a prestigious boutique resort of 126 architect designed two and three bedroom homes. Outstanding resort facilities and a community based on friendship and fun is the key.

Don’t underestimate the value of s e o reviewing your mortgage how d l e e f t i to have someone take the hassle

out of finding our home loan? We have access to hundreds of home loan products from our wide panel of lenders. Talk to us today about finding a home loan that suits you.

In fact, according to Mortgage Choice’s 2014 Happy As Index, less than 50 per cent of those with a mortgage plan to review their home loan this year. Given that many of Australia’s lenders have recently cut their rates to 60 year lows, now really is the perfect time for those with a mortgage to review their situation and make sure they are still in the right product for their needs. After the Reserve Bank announced it would cut the official cash rate by 25 basis points in February, many of Australia’s largest lenders were quick to follow suit, trimming 0.25 per cent from their respective standard variable rates. But while many were happy to pass on the full rate cut, some lenders went even further, trimming more than 25 basis points from their standard variable rates. This act shows just how hungry Australia’s lenders are for business.

Many of Australia’s lenders are offering significant discounts at the moment, so it is important that you don’t just take a lender’s standard variable rate on face value as it is possible to secure a much lower rate. As a mortgage broker, I can step you through the entire process and scan through hundreds of home loan products to help you source a sharply priced mortgage that is right for your needs. In addition, my team and I will do all of the paper work on your behalf, at no cost to you. Graham Bowling graham.bowling@mortgagechoice.com.au 07 4957 7786

Locals who review their mortgage may not only find that there is a better product for their needs, but they may find they are able to save themselves thousands of dollars in mortgage repayments over the life of their loan. Say for example, you currently have a $300,000, 30year mortgage with an interest rate of 5%, if you were to review your mortgage and ultimately shave 25 basis points from your interest rate, you could save yourself over $16,000 in interest over the life of your loan.

Many mortgage holders underestimate the value of proactively reviewing their finances and in particular their mortgages.

DEE MANGION

CALLING ALL FIRST HOME BUYERS! Take advantage now to get into your first home.

Tips on buying your first home. First of all, set your goals.

Create a ‘to do’ checklist. It’s essential to work out exactly where you stand financially. You need to know precisely what you’ll be able to afford to pay back each month, as well as what the upfront costs are going to set you back. Be realistic with your personal expenses and budget for unforeseen circumstances.

Research mortgage loans and affordability.

You can start with your local bank or choose a mortgage broker who will give you the best loan options to suit your needs. A broker can save you a lot of time. Speak to friends about their experiences with their lender. This is one of the best ways of gauging the type of service that you are likely to receive. Ask about the latest information on how you can qualify for a FIRST HOME OWNERS GRANT and how much you are entitled to and how can it be used towards the purchase of your new home. The first step once you have decided on a lender is qualifying for pre approval on finance. At this time it is also a good idea to decide on a solicitor or conveyancer for the legal requirements. Again ring a few offices, compare price and service, and also ask family and friends who they recommend.

While waiting for settlement

Start preparing the change of address information, obtain removalists’ quotes and arrange quotes on any urgent repairs, terminate utility accounts. Have these in place to implement once your contract has gone unconditional.

Come settlement day,

Your legal representatives and a representative of your lending authority meet to exchange cheques, sign the mortgage and other documentation. Welcome to your new home!

House hunting

Once you establish the price range you can afford, start inspecting as many open homes as you can. I always suggest to first home buyers I meet to set up an exercise book or if preferring on their phone or Ipad and record information about the properties they attend. Things like key features they liked or disliked, the condition of the home is there any immediate expense. Research the neighbourhood and suburb and street location. After inspecting so many properties it can become confusing, this way you can shortlist your favourites that ticked your boxes. Websites such as www.realestate.com.au and www.domain.com.au are also useful. Sign up to property alerts. Contact local agents with a wish list and ask them to contact you when properties come up that suit your needs.

Putting in an offer

An offer should be in writing, the selling agent will present the contract to the sellers, if the sellers don’t accept your offer, they can come back to you with a counter offer. This can continue until all parties have agreed on a price. A contract is not complete until all parties have signed.

Now is a great time to look at purchasing your first home. You will find many properties on the market in an affordable price range. You may find that your home loan repayment may not be more than your current rental payments. I specialise in helping first home buyers make their dream a reality. I can help you with advice and guidance on where to start, the first steps to take. Should you be buying an established home or a new house and land package? What if you don’t qualify just yet, what are your options? In conjunction with selected mortgage brokers, banks, conveyancers building and pest inspectors, insurance brokers, I can help make your journey to purchase your dream home stress free. I understand that buying your first home can be nerve wrecking. I currently have new house and land packages available in Andergrove Lakes and Ooralea Waters where the builder is offering a great price or upgrade to FIRST HOME BUYERS 0409 434 259 or email dee@mrre.com.au

When your offer is accepted

Next, contact your Building and Pest inspector and book a time for the inspection to take place. It is imperative that you get an inspection on the property to avoid discovering any hidden nasties down the track.

Contact your legal representative and arrange a time to meet with them and go through the contract. This is best done immediately and during the cooling off period. Once you are satisfied with the contract, contact your lender or mortgage broker and advise them of your purchase. You will be required to pay the agreed deposit within the time frame written on the contract.

RETIRING AS A MILLIONAIRE IT IS POSSIBLE! Have you ever looked back at a younger you, and wondered how much better off you’d be today if you banked half as much as you drank or frivolously frittered away on designer shoes you no longer ever wear? In today’s consumer-driven society, there is a lot of pressure on people to have the best of everything. The latest smart phone, the nicest house, an overseas holiday every year, designer accessories and Instagram photos from Michelin Star restaurants. The stark truth is, if you let consumerism, ego and ‘what everyone else thinks’ control your life, you will retire with close to nothing. While retirement may seem a lifetime away for those in their 20’s, and even 30’s, the earlier you start saving, the richer you will become. It really is that simple. You don’t need a trust fund and you don’t need to have been squirrelling away money since you were a toddler to retire as a millionaire. If you’re in your 20’s, it’s very achievable and, in your 30’s, it’s still doable while allowing you to still enjoy a social life. It all comes down to the magic of compound interest. The earlier you start saving, the more your money starts to earn extra money for you. It just takes patience.

Maxine Richardson 0422 108 116 • Selling, Buying, Renting • Residential, Commercial • Over 16 years real estate experience • Always putting clients first

Due to market fluctuations and changing percentage rates, it’s near impossible to accurately determine an exact figure, however, looking at an average return rate of 6% interest, you can assume the following amounts will have you well on track to retire as a millionaire. If you start saving when you are 20 years old, then all you will need to put away is $350 per month, less than $100 per week. Think of the amount of money you spend per week on takeaway food, alcohol, coffee, eating out, unnecessary clothes and shoes and you begin to realise how achievable around $90 per week really is. If you are 25, the figure you should aim for is $500 per month. By now you will have a few years of experience in the workforce or a tertiary education to help you to achieve a higher salary. As a 30 year old, you should be looking to invest $690 per month, and as a 35 year old, that figure jumps to $970 per month. While that figure seems high, it is still less than $250 per week. If you make some adjustments to your lifestyle and cut a few expenses, this figure is still achievable. Don’t forget that the rate of inflation can devalue your savings, so $1M now, may only be worth around $550,000 to $650,000 by the time you retire. As you receive pay rises, it’s important to up the value of your contributions to match the rate of inflation, so your amount is true to the value of $1M as we know it now. However, superannuation payments are not included in this, so if part of your salary is already contributing to your retirement, then you are well on your way and retiring with $1M is even more achievable. Initially, you can put your savings in a bank account but over time, it won’t return as much interest as other options. Once your initial savings surpass $5,000, talk to a financial planner about your options to secure the best interest rate. As your nest egg continues to grow, you can expect to receive a higher rate of interest. The work you put into researching high-interest investment options will be rewarding over time. Moral of the story, the sooner you start, the better off you’ll be.

Is your spending out of control? • Glass & Aluminium • Windows & Doors • Shower Screens • Sliding Wardrobes • Security & Fly Screens • Splashbacks • Perspex • Mirrors • Pool Fences • Balustrades • Shop Fronts • Marine

Has shopping become your favourite pastime? If you constantly find yourself having more month than money, it’s time for an overhaul on your spending habits.

1. You rely on your credit card to pay bills

A credit card can be a great financial tool, in the hands of someone who is financially sensible. If you are in the position where you need to use your credit card to pay for essentials, and can’t pay the balance back before the due date, then you need to ask yourself why you are spending more than you are earning. If the thought of cutting up your credit cards makes you break out in a cold sweat, you should seriously begin a monthly budget to ensure your month consists of more dollars than days.

2. Shopping is your go-to activity

It’s 10am on a Saturday morning, you’re looking for a bit of excitement to fill your weekend, so you head to the shops. How often do you return home empty handed? Almost never right? Oh, that handbag was on sale? So was the one you bought last week. You’ll look supercute in that top? You already look fantastic in the 50 others you have. Read a book, go for a walk on the beach, or better yet, sort out your wardrobe and sell the items you don’t need!

3. Your courier has become your friend

Online shopping can be fun, but it can also be addictive. The feeling of a parcel turning up on your doorstep is, undoubtedly, exciting. However, if you end up ordering so many things you lose track of your parcels, you potentially have an impulse buying addiction. If your courier starts joking about how often he is knocking on your door, it’s probably time to cut your online browsing time to a minimum.

4. You buy things you don’t even use

Spending just for the sake of spending can become a dangerous cycle. How often have you purchased something online only to be disappointed when it arrived, so it never got used? Or grabbed something on sale because you were sure you’d get use out of it…only you didn’t because you didn’t need it in the first place. The truth about payday loans Need money fast? Get approved in under 60 minutes. No credit checks! Receive a decision in minutes!

Payday loan marketing is everywhere. During prime-time television commercials, saturating internet advertising spaces and ringing out across the radio airwaves. While the dollar value of these loans are small, the interest rates are often astronomical and, unfortunately, appeal to those in the community who are most vulnerable to financial problems. It’s not a new concept. Wealthy businessmen have been exploiting the poor since almost the beginning of time. Only now these deals are done with full transparency instead of the rear room of an Italian mob den. Reforms were made in Australia in 2013 to cap the interest rate charged on payday loans. However, clever lenders have still found ways to obtain top dollar in fees. One common way that payday loan businesses attract higher fees is to offer the borrower a longer repayment term. It looks attractive to the borrower because they have longer to pay back the loan. However, the fees also dramatically increase with the lengthened term. These small loans can be damaging for vulnerable members of the community who need money to pay for standard living costs. Once a loan is taken out to pay for groceries, petrol or a utility bill, where does it end? Often

these customers find that the repayments have crippled them the following fortnight. They then need to apply for another loan to get them through until another pay day. There is a time and a place where payday loans can be a viable option. In the case of an emergency, such as unexpected car repairs, an individual is better off taking out a short loan to fix the car rather than jeopardise their employment with time off. Travel to attend the funeral of a close family member or friend is also another circumstance where a payday loan can provide appropriate financial relief. The general rule of thumb is to ensure that you can make the designated repayment without putting yourself into further financial strife. If you have fallen into a pattern where you are requesting a payday loan at least once a month, it would be beneficial to speak to a financial expert who can offer advice on how to break the crippling cycle. Remember that a loan shark doesn’t always look like a shark. Sometimes it might disguise itself as a rabbit.

In the hot seat

ROWENA KISSUN How in your opinion can natural health and medical science co-exist? A. Easily! Before studying naturopathy I spent 6 years at uni studying

medical sciences. I feel that any health practitioner needs that framework and understanding before undergoing further studies into natural medicine. Without that knowledge, it would be impossible to understand the complexities of the human body and natural treatments would not be as effective. These days, naturopathy is taught with a purely scientific basis which is great for my patients and the referring doctors we deal with daily.

What does your daily routine look like? A. I’m a work hard, play hard kind of person. I prefer to pack lots of

things into my day. I start the day with gratitude, hanging out with my dog. I might eat breakfast once or twice, depending on what type of exercise I’m doing that morning then off to work. 70% of my work is at Whitsunday Health Clinic. I also manufacture my own range of supplements, including weight loss brand “Sun Slim”, which takes me overseas often as we open up new markets. Bangkok is another regular destination for the Thailand Dental Medical Tours we organise. I’m enjoying studying Vedic Philosophy via distance with Oxford University in my spare time and I choose not to watch tv. This gives me lots of free time to learn, exercise and set goals both personal and business. I am choosy about the way I eat and I never feel I am missing out because of my strict dietary choices.

What inspires you? A. So many things! All I’ve ever wanted to do is help people with their

health. That goal itself keeps me inspired to continue the work I do. I derive strength and inspiration from the admirable qualities that so many of my friends, family and clients possess. Everyone can and will teach you something…if you listen.

38 www.corelife.com.au

What bothers you? A. Sometimes it’s upsetting when people don’t realise the things they eat

and drink, or the lifestyle they lead, is what got them to such a state of ill health. The disconnection some people have between our actions and our health. I take it as a challenge to change their thinking, though! Parking fines and angry people at the boat ramp also bother me.

What are three simple things we can do to be healthier? A. 1. Start now. Literally. Plan what you can do for the rest of your day

to make it a healthy one. Whether that be drinking more water or making yourself a food plan for the week. Each little step counts. 2. Feel proud of every little thing you do to be healthy. Do not focus on the negative. 3. Seek help. At the clinic we offer a range of services including food intolerance testing, hormone balancing medicines, acupuncture, psychology treatments for anxiety, weight loss seminars, cortisol stress testing and vitamin blood testing. These types of services are there to help give you guidance as to how to achieve your health goals quickly.

Do you take supplements? A. I only take what my body needs. Our in-house blood testing at the

clinic allows me to see what my client needs by way of supplements, and me too! I’m currently training to climb Mt Blanc in Europe this August so my regime is about to change. However, I generally take no more than three supplements. Otherwise I use food as my medicine. Sunpab’s CardiOz energy supplement has been a long time favourite of mine.

Any final words of advice? A. Life is short and there are so many things we can do with it if we maintain health as a priority. Oh, and eat spinach.

Women in Business “A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.”- Eleanor Roosevelt We all look up to strong, independent women, but how do we become one ourselves? Many of the women who inspire us make it look easy, but that’s because we often only see the success. We rarely see the mistakes, the struggle, the self-doubt or the frustration. At Core Life, we are a publication made up completely of women. Our editor and magazine founder, Rebecca Douthwaite, recently launched the first edition of her new tourism magazine, Tripping. As a mum who balances work and family time, she would be the first to say that being in business and striving for success is not an easy road to take, but the rewards are worth the effort. Our photographer, Norina, and writer, Amanda, both own their own businesses, and know what it’s like to still be working at 1 a.m., burning the midnight oil to ensure they meet deadline and exceed client expectation. Our designer, Jemma, is no stranger to working all night to send our magazine to print to make sure it hits the stands on the first of every month, while our advertising managers, Anna and Maria, balance work with modelling and raising a family. Our accounts manager, Christine, balances the books, helps with distribution and is a busy mum. We inspire one another, motivate each other and lift each other up when they are feeling down. We believe that the measure of a strong woman is to be able to talk each other up to inspire confidence, rather than put someone down. We are lucky in our respective positions, to meet other remarkable women in business through the avenues of the magazine. From Mackay to the Whitsundays, we are constantly in awe of the women who strive to make our community better. The mums who work full time yet are still able to pick their kids up from school. The women who start businesses from the ground up. The ladies who make it to the top of their respective fields, and those who are part of ground breaking innovation. We are proud to introduce Core Life Magazine’s 2015 women in business.

AS SEEN ON THE BLOCK

influential

women who changed the world Who runs the world? Girls! According to BeyoncĂŠ and at Core Life Magazine, we agree! Women have been leaving their mark on the world since the creation of Adam and Eve. Not only have exceptional women become high achievers in a patriarchal society, but have influenced millions with their stance against injustice and sexism. They led armies and fought wars, protected humanity, made scientific discoveries which transformed science as we know it, fought for justice and pushed boundaries to make the impossible achievable. We have compiled our list of our favourite influential women of all time, and hope that generations of women to come, continue to want to change the world for the better.

Oprah Winfrey

Born into poverty, Oprah was born to a single mother, only a teenager when she gave birth. Oprah experienced considerable hardship, raped before she was 10 years old. She became pregnant at 14 but her son died in infancy. While in high school, Oprah managed to get a job at a radio station in Tennessee, and began co-anchoring the local evening news at 19. Her personable attitude moved her to the daytime talk-show arena where she boosted a Chicago talk show from third place to first in ratings. She launched her own production company and became one of the most recognizable women in the world. A pioneer for African-American women, Oprah became the first African-American billionaire, one of the richest people on Earth, one of the greatest philanthropists in American history. In 2013, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama, the highest civilian award of the United States.

Marie Curie

Born in Warsaw, Poland, Marie Curie became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only woman to win the award in two different fields (physics and chemistry). Curie’s efforts, with her husband Pierre Curie, led to the discovery of polonium and radium. Her daughter Irène JoliotCurie followed in her mother’s footsteps, winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935. In 1995, Marie and Pierre Curie’s remains were interred in the Pantheon in Paris. Marie is the first and only woman to be laid to rest there.

Anne Frank

Florence Nightingale Known as “The Lady with the Lamp,” Florence was a pioneer of modern nursing, a writer and a noted statistician. Her lasting contribution has been her role in founding the modern nursing profession. Florence’s most famous contribution came during the Crimean War, which became her central focus when reports began to filter back to Britain about the horrific conditions for the wounded. She believed the high death rates in the hospitals were due to poor nutrition and supplies and overworking of the soldiers. Consequently, she reduced deaths in the Army during peacetime and turned attention to the sanitary design of hospitals.

“What is done cannot be undone, but one can prevent it happening again” The world fell in love with, and endured the heartbreak of reading the diary of Anne Frank, the 13-year-old Jewish girl who hid from the Nazi regime in Amsterdam. Her story under the life of German occupation is one of the most highly-read books in the world with more than 30 million copies sold. Out of the eight people who had been hiding together, only one survived, Anne’s father Otto who survived Auschwitz. Anne, her sister and her mother all died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945, only weeks before it was liberated. Her mother had starved to death, while Anne and her sister succumbed to typhus.

Cleopatra

Cleopatra, depicted as sexy and mysterious, with an eye liner trend that has survived centuries. She is most famous for her relationships with Marc Antony and Julius Caesar and represented herself as the reincarnation of an Egyptian goddess, Isis. While these relationships were depicted as romantic, it is likely they were based on political alliance, for Cleopatra to remain as ruler, the last active pharaoh of Ancient Egypt.

Jamie-Lee

Central Signs and Graphics Passion. The key character trait in a successful designer. When you are inspired to create because it’s what you want to do there is no room to fail, only to flourish. At high school, Jamie-Lee’s passion was art. The swishing of a paint brush on canvas, the grinding of a lead pencil on paper or the fusion of colours and shapes on the computer. Art was, and still is, her world. After completing her studies in graphic design, JamieLee went straight into the signage industry, where she developed years of design and print experience. It is this experience, which has built the foundation of her and, her husband, Paul’s successful business, Central Signs and Graphics. “The experience of our team is what sets us apart from the competition.” “We are fortunate to be surrounded by very experienced people with many years of experience in the signage industry. We constantly learn off each other and challenge each other to produce bigger and better.” “We are known in the industry for our can-do approach to problem-solving. Not everyone’s signage and graphic needs are the same, so we never say “we can’t.” We find a way to ensure we can,” Jamie-Lee said. As a business-owner and mum, Jamie-Lee is grateful for the support of family and friends to allow her to pursue her passion. “The hours put into the business are long, but family and friends will always come first. They have to. No amount of money is worth sacrificing relationships for.” “My husband, Paul, is my rock and the business wouldn’t be where it is today without him. He’s simply amazing. He’s daddy day care for our young son Corbin and runs around after our teenage daughter, Lil, while also putting in long hours with our business.” “The key to our success is having a fantastic network of friends and family to call on for help and advice and we are so grateful to have those wonderful people in our lives,” she said. Her advice to other women looking to re-enter the workforce after raising a family is to not strive for perfectionism in every area of their lives. “I’ve learned to let go and accept that not everything can be perfect all of the time.” “If the floor needs a vacuum, it can wait. Spending time with my children is number one and things that used to be at the top of my list, like housework, are now pretty close to the bottom.” “Enjoy the moments. Let go of idealistic expectation and live to be happy.”

Aileen Fahl

Domainone Estate Agent

Every home has a tale worth telling, a story worth selling. A house taken at face value is comparable to only reading the cover of a good book. The cover may influence your decision to turn the page, but it’s the chapters within which create the story to tell. Aileen Fahl understands that every home has its unique advantages, appealing to its own individual market. This is why she chose Domainone Estate Agent, to give her the flexibility to create exclusive marketing campaigns for every vendor. Originally owned by Darren Williams, Aileen took over the directorship and branding of Domainone when Darren offered her the business opportunity and she has never looked back. “I strive to achieve real estate with integrity. With more than 15 years of experience in the industry, I understand that you are only as good as your last sale. Word-of-mouth is everything for my business, with most of my listings resulting from referrals from very happy sellers. “The flexibility to help buyers and sellers without being hemmed in by nationwide policies gives Domainone a distinct advantage. We can think outside the square to achieve the kind of results we all desire,” Aileen said. As a Mackay area local, Aileen has seen the fluctuating boom and bust pattern that the coal industry has brought to the area. Her family moved to Moranbah when she was ten years old, before the town was even built, so she has seen the development from the ground up. She raised two sons in Moranbah who are now both in their thirties. Her eldest son has three children of his own, while her youngest son owns his own business in Sydney. The rise and fall of the local economy didn’t deter Aileen from stepping away from the comfort of an international real estate brand to establish her own name. “It hasn’t been an easy market, but it has been character building. I’ve had to work hard and never rest on my laurels, which has brought tremendous results for my clients,” she said. To keep her energised, Aileen has a fondness of Crossfit. Her eldest son and his wife introduced her to the concept and now she feels like she belongs to a second family. “I love the positivity it brings. Crossfit is a must-have in my week. I’m also fond of the occasional game of golf and, to relax, I enjoy trips with my husband in our Mustang,” she said. Having a fascination with historical moments, Aileen was entranced with a trip she took to the United States of America, which produced a number of monumental moments. “I loved following the Kennedy family, so visiting Dallas where JFK was assassinated was incredible. Just the sense of being where one of the world’s defining moments happened was an unforgettable experience for me. “I absolutely love Elvis, so visiting Memphis and Graceland was also very special,” Aileen said. If your home has you feeling like you live ‘In the Ghetto’, get out of ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ with a ‘Little Less Conversation’ and little more action. Contact Aileen Fahl to find the home of your dreams. It’s now or never.

Get creative

8 seconds marketing

‘Every business has a unique story to tell. Our job is to identify it, add a strategy to it, and work out how to get your message to your target markets. The result? A marketing strategy!’

“When the going gets tough, get creative. In a downturn marketing is often one of the first budgets to get cut, but unfortunately for businesses, this only makes the quiet times even quieter.

“Exercise and health is a key part of business success, it is as much your mental well-being as your physical!’

“I love highlighting the affordable options that businesses have available to ensure they don’t slip away from being top of mind with their clients. Admittedly I’m a complete geek at heart, and love all things tech and online. With the evolution of the Internet and many different and clever apps and websites to assist small business, marketing is now something everyone can get their teeth into and see results from!

Whilst Tolita has a keen focus on work, she also very much enjoys a balance of the beautiful outdoors the Whitsundays offers. “We are lucky in the Whitsundays to have an abundance of stunning places to enjoy, but hands down one of my greatest escapes is on the back of my horse, cantering the lush cane fields of Riordanvale with my beautiful friends, both two legs and four!’ “Going for a run or riding my horse allows me to completely switch off from technology and open my senses to the simplicity of nature. It’s like a digital detox and is critical to achieving a healthy balance between work and life,” Tolita said. Tolita is the business owner of 8 Seconds, an all-encompassing marketing solution for businesses looking to standout in a crowded market place. With an extensive background in tourism and a stint in the mining industry post completing her MBA, Tolita recognised many businesses struggling to effectively gain the exposure they need to succeed, often spending large amounts of money on inefficient campaigns that weren’t providing them with a return on investment. 44 www.corelife.com.au

There is a big wide world of affordable options out there to enable every business to have a voice. Sometimes those businesses just need to be pointed in the right direction to be heard,” Tolita said. Tolita’s passion for marketing evolved from her time on Hamilton Island as the Island Sales and Marketing Manager. She was part of the creative team who launched the ‘Best Job in the World’ concept, which went worldwide. “We first played the advert to journalists at 8p.m., and within 12 hours it had gone viral. It was such an exciting campaign to be a part of, and helps to illustrate what a clever marketing strategy can do to get cut through,” she said. If you would like to know more about how you can market your business, contact Tolita at 8 Seconds. Marketing for your Business. Visit 8seconds. com.au or call 0488117728.

sweet acres

Vanessa Torti, or ‘Ness’ as she is known at Sweet Acres, has had a long history in the saddle. She first rode a horse at the age of 4, broke her leg at 5 and was back in the next day sporting a full leg cast. She has never looked back since. “Horses have always been a huge part of my life. From when I used to sit behind my Dad as a little girl and fall asleep, to now where it is my career. I started to coach 8 years ago and I feel privileged to call it my job. It is an honour to share the grace, beauty and power of the horse with students from as young as 5 through to 60 years of age!’ ‘While coaching horse riding, you become a mentor for the rider and their family. Learning to handle a 600 kg animal gives inner strength and total self awareness. One of my favourite quotes is, ‘Horses are a reflection of your soul. The horse knows if you know and he knows if you don’t know!’, spoken by Ray Hunt and so so true!’ Ness’ repertoire doesn’t just involve the same daily routine either. Her coaching skill set includes everything from starting a 2 year old unbroken horse right through to training advanced riders of all disciplines. “That can include dressage to show jumping to camp drafting. But, the thing I love the most is that nothing with an animal can work by a clock or a book, riding is something you have to feel!”, Ness said. Ness’ riding school, Sweet Acres, can be found tucked into the hinterland of Sugarloaf. Regular group lessons are offered, with private tutorials also available for all skill levels. “It isn’t all lessons, though. We like to mix it up with some great fun! On Friday mornings, we have the ladies join us for our Friday Filly Program. On Saturday we offer a mixed adult lesson which kicks off with some quality stretching. Shed yoga! Each weekday afternoon we have kids everywhere, enjoying lessons after school. We also offer school holiday programs and camps during those times of the year.’ “You may have seen a whole team of horses waiting outside McDonald’s recently”, laughs Ness. “The kids and my team ride over each school holidays for a lunch break with a difference!”. “Having horses in my life is my greatest passion. They have led me to great friends, experiences and memories I will forever cherish. No horse is the same and they are ultimately our greatest teacher.”

WHAT’S IN YOUR HANDBAG RIGHT NOW My purse (no cash), hairbrush, mints, deodorant, tissues, hand wipes, phone, lip gloss, screwdriver (never know when you’ll need one), business cards, sunglasses and lego bits.

WHAT’S IN YOUR HANDBAG RIGHT NOW My Handbag is huge! I have spare clothes, socks, food, supplements, chargers, earphones, wallet, note pad, Ipad - and that’s a quiet day.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB The people. My clients. Nothing gives me more of a buzz than someone telling me that they owe it to me or that I helped them or encouraged them in some way to achieve their goals.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB You get to hang out with all different kinds of people everyday with a variety of challenges. I love helping people, it’s what makes me feel good.

WHAT DON’T YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB Not finding time enough time to train myself and people that give up!

WHAT DON’T YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB There’s not a lot I don’t like, maybe just that there’s not enough hours in the day.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE BECOMING A PERSONAL TRAINER A police officer (don’t hold that against me).

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE BECOMING A PERSONAL TRAINER I’m a registered nurse and still am. It’s what I do when I’m not at the gym.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO GET FIT Start small. Start by going for walks, hook up with a friend and join a gym. Half of the battle is taking that first step to walk through the door, have someone do it with you.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO GET FIT Set yourself a goal and write it down. Everyone is trying to achieve something different. Once you’ve achieved that goal write down another. I always have a goal, it’s what keeps me achieving more.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ALL THE NEW DIETS AND FADS I think people like to try new things, especially if they have been doing the same thing for a long period of time. I’m all for people trying new things to keep motivated. A lot of people try new fad diets and spend a huge amount of money only to be disappointed.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ALL THE NEW DIETS AND FADS We all want a quick fix, I’m sorry to say - there is none. I have been in the fitness industry for a long time, probably even tried a few of them, IT DOES NOT WORK.

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR SOMEONE TO FOCUS ON WHEN ON THEIR FITNESS JOURNEY They need to focus on themselves and to do it for themselves, not anyone else.! WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PERSONAL TRAINING IS IMPORTANT For beginners, it builds their confidence, not to mention teaching them about exercise and new skills. For other people, it can be about keeping people motivated. WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A PERSONAL TRAINER I think you have to practice what you preach, if I was choosing a PT, I would choose someone who actually looks fit and eats right! Secondly, someone who actually knows their stuff! But most of you, someone you connect with and who you are comfortable with.

WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR SOMEONE TO FOCUS ON WHEN ON THEIR FITNESS JOURNEY Themselves and their own personal goals and challenges. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PERSONAL TRAINING IS IMPORTANT Having a great trainer is great for the beginner. Learning how to train correctly, safely and with variety can really set you up for life. A personal trainer can also push those to the next level in your training, help you achieve your goals/results and even help you train for a particular sporting event or competition. WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A PERSONAL TRAINER I think the first is their qualifications, do they continue to learn, where they have worked and what experience they have. You want someone who is going to show you correct technique every single time, it’s your body and you are putting yourself in their hands. Always ask for a complimentary session to check them out and also to see whether they click with you.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB The people I get to meet and work with every day. Being able to make a difference in someone’s life through either fitness or just being a friend! The gym is my family. WHAT DON’T YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB Not a big fan of early morning starts! WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE BECOMING A PERSONAL TRAINER Check out chick at Cole’s for 6 and a half years! WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO GET FIT Just get moving, no matter what it is you are doing from walking, swimming, running or going to the gym! Get some friends or a friend and work out together, this makes it much more fun and you will have some one to help motivate you. Getting stared is the hardest! HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ALL THE NEW DIETS AND FADS I’m not a big fan of fad diets and fancy exercise workouts. However, I’m sure some work very well. I personally think nothing but good old fashion hard work and healthy eating is the best. WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR SOMEONE TO FOCUS ON WHEN ON THEIR FITNESS JOURNEY Nothing comes easy; don’t give up if you don’t see results right away! Consistency is the key. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PERSONAL TRAINING IS IMPORTANT Personal Training can be just want some people need, that extra push, being accountable to someone! I know myself that I don’t work out as hard if I don’t have someone there in my ear saying I can do that last rep, don’t stop! WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A PERSONAL TRAINER Choosing a personal trainer that fits you and your needs is very important! If you don’t have a connection with that person then things just won’t blend together and work! Having trust in that person, knowing they have sound knowledge of what they are making you do.

WHAT’S IN YOUR HANDBAG RIGHT NOW I dont have a handbag with me (at the gym) I use a 6 Pack Bag which carries all my meals for the day. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB Helping people achieve things they didn’t think they could possibly do. WHAT DON’T YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR JOB When I become more invested and committed in a clients’ health and fitness than they are. WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE BECOMING A PERSONAL TRAINER I worked in admin and management. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO GET FIT Take some time to make an appointment with a trainer and have a good chat to them about your goals. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ALL THE NEW DIETS AND FADS There are so many diets and programs out there that promise quick results and lets face it, we all want to see quick results. These ‘fads’ are generally not healthy or maintainable. Regular exercise and a healthy balanced diet is much easier to maintain and if you are consistent you will get the results you are after! WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR SOMEONE TO FOCUS ON WHEN ON THEIR FITNESS JOURNEY Seek good advice from a qualified trainer to set you up with a good exercise program for you, guidance and a healthy diet. Most of all, enjoy what you are doing, if you hate what you are doing you’re not going to do it, are you?? A good trainer will ensure that the exercises that you are doing are safe and appropriate for you. WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A PERSONAL TRAINER Checkout a trainers qualifications, specialties and background. Do your personalities match or clash? A good trainer would meet up with you for a face to face chat and often offer a complement session, this would be a great opportunity to see weather you both would work well together.

Mei Elson

North Queensland Glass We continue to evolve new ideas and concepts and every day is a lesson. Five years ago Mei Elson and her husband, Trent, established a new business, North Queensland Glass, in Airlie Beach. They broke every rule! They started a business during an economic downturn with the high Australian dollar and global financial crisis having stalled investment and development across the Whitsundays. Much to the distress of their friends and family they went into business together as a husband and wife team. High school sweethearts from Sydney, with a young family, they were determined to build their dream life in the Whitsundays. They first saw the potential of the Whitsundays when they were married on Hamilton Island. They fell in the love with the beauty and lifestyle the region had to offer. “At first, we decided it would be a great place to have a working vacation with our children. Once we became a part of the community we saw that the region had so much more to offer us,” Mei said. “I’m proud of how we have worked together to continually expand business and build a quality lifestyle for our family over the years. However, we had to work extremely hard for it. “Building a business has constantly challenged our skills and we have had to evolve and implement change in our business, adopting new technology, staying abreast of products and trends and developing new processes around business management, to compete in the industry,” she said. Mei believes that their success can be pinpointed to the support of each other, especially the support of each other’s risky ideas.

“Much of our ‘success against all odds’ can be attributed to being open to learning, through listening and seeking advice and trying new ways to build and develop our business. From my banker, accountant, local realtor, clients and even my local hairdresser, there is so much information, advice and support out there that can inspire you and help you succeed even in the toughest of circumstances.” “My advice to other women looking to start a new career or branch out into business is to give it everything you’ve got and have confidence in your ideas. We’re all capable. It just takes determination to bring it out.”

Balancing

50 www.corelife.com.au

Peggy Goodall It’s a well-known cliché that money can’t buy happiness. However, this simple statement is also true. It can give you fleeting joy but, as Peggy Goodall explains, it can’t compare to the currency of love, given freely and in abundance from your children daily. “Any working mum will tell you that one of the hardest parts of a career is to manage the work/home balance and the guilt and pressure we place on ourselves if a meeting means missing a school event. Balancing school homework and worrying about their success is always in my thoughts. I am blessed to have a wonderful parent/teacher network helping take the pressure off.” “This is one of the reasons that we provide a family-friendly workplace. We place the trust in our staff that if they need to take some time to collect a sick child from school or to take care of family member we are always there to support them. In return, our expectation is the job will still get done.” “My management style has always been to promote open communication. So, if one of our team needs help, they can come to me for advice or to seek a solution. We are constantly investing in training for our staff to ensure they have the skills to succeed.”

and life...

Peggy and her husband Arthur are the owners of Goodall’s Motor Group, both with extensive automotive and management experience in Australia and overseas. Their young sons, age eight and five, are always involved in the business. “I pick the boys up from school and take them home, and one of the biggest things I make sure of is to not take stress from work home with me. From the time we get home until they go to bed, it’s their time. After they go to bed, I get more work done before I start my day again tomorrow,” Peggy said. Without any immediate family nearby, Peggy is grateful for the wonderful support she receives from her friends and neighbours. Whether it is getting to soccer games or after school activities it can definitely be said it takes a community to raise our children. “Our neighbourhood network is amazing I have pulled up into my driveway and been greeted with wonderful smiling friends, a glass of wine and children running and playing in our street. When I’ve had a tough day, they are the kind of friends who pick me up, dust me off and they are the best therapists in town. We all look out for each other’s children. I’m so lucky to have moved into such a great neighbourhood,” she said. Despite feeling the effects of a tough economy, Goodall’s is dedicated to providing its customers with the best service and facilities. “Our future is full of new development plans. The Ford service reception has just been completed. The next phase will see a new service reception facility built for Chrysler Jeep Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Volkswagen, Kia, Suzuki, Land Rover and Jaguar. This will be complemented with a new sales showroom being built for Ford and Land Rover at Kay Court in the near future.” “Life’s never dull. I love my amazing family, our industry, and the challenges and when you put them altogether, it’s my crazy life and I love it.” Peggy said.

“You’re only as good as your last sale.” This is an ethos which Maxine Richardson lives by, treating each new opportunity as a chance to make a positive difference in someone’s life. “As a real estate agent, I have the opportunity to influence the lives of those I help and that is far more important to me than the sale itself. It’s about putting people in a good position to empower them. “Buying or selling a home is one of the largest transactions a person will make in their lifetime and I feel absolutely privileged to help make that process a great experience for them,” Maxine said. Maxine grew up in the small town of Edenhope, Victoria before crossing the border to South Australia to study nursing in Mount Gambier. She soon discovered it wasn’t a profession she enjoyed. However, within the timber industry she found her feet in recruitment, working her way up to a national level management position. She discovered her passion for business development, property management and property sales and now has 16 years of experience to draw from. “My industry knowledge allows me to give every buyer and seller the information they need to make an informed decision. Making sure that people enter into a comfortable situation is important to me. Real Estate can empower people in a positive way and that’s what I love most about it. “I also believe it is important to treat every new listing as unique, to ensure it is put out to market correctly,” Maxine said. Maxine is a fully licensed, independent contractor working with Ray White. She respects the values and ethos of the Ray White brand and utilises the company’s ongoing training and development opportunities to keep her skills finely tuned. Real estate customer, Chris Bartlem, has used Maxine’s professionalism on multiple occasions and can’t speak highly enough of her service. “Maxine has helped myself and my wife a number of times, both with the buying and selling of property. She’s an absolute gem and one of the hardest working agent’s you’ll ever find.” “From the start we admired her knowledge, professionalism and pure honesty. We always felt confident in her advice because she could back it up with evidence. That sort of professionalism only comes with experience.”

Maxine enjoys getting active and embraces the opportunity to spend time with her family as well as contribute within the community. “I travel interstate as often as I can to visit my two eldest children. I love following their sport and passions.” “My youngest daughter is 13, and I enjoy getting involved with her netball and basketball teams. On the weekends, I drive the boat out to take her and her friends water skiing. “I still get to play a bit of competitive tennis too which keeps me on my toes and getting out and about throughout the region to support community events,” she said. Buying or selling, try the dynamic approach with Maxine Richardson. Her energy and enthusiasm is contagious!

Have you heard about that amazing new health and fitness regime? You know, the one where you don’t have to exercise, you can eat whatever you like and you’ll stay fit and healthy as long as you see a personal trainer once a month? No? Unfortunately, nether have we.

Sarah-Lee

Sensorium Skin Technology

A skin fitness routine is similar. While there are many potions, creams and pills circulating the market, skin care is far more complex. Sarah-Lee Adams from Sensorium Skin Technology explains how a holistic approach blended with science will produce the results we crave. “Beautiful, healthy skin is achieved through a long-term commitment. How you live your life will ultimately be reflected in your face. “Through years of experience, I know what works for Queensland skin, and it starts with being sun smart. What you eat, what you drink and how you move all dictate the health and fitness of your skin. “This is why I offer an in-depth consultation, so I can use the science of skin care to enhance your natural beauty. I offer insight into how changes in your lifestyle can dramatically improve your skin, as well as a three month skin coaching package, which is like PT for your skin. “It’s not about cover-ups or adornment, it’s about changing your skin from within, so you can be comfortable in the skin you’re in,” she said. Sarah-Lee practices what she preaches. Utilising the natural beauty of the Whitsundays, she takes her Beaglier and Staffy for a morning walk to get her blood flowing. She practices yoga religiously three times per week, a non-negotiable inclusion in her work life balance.

“To include yoga in my routine, I start work later on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but this in turn is great for my clients, because I work until 9 p.m. on those days, giving the option of late night bookings,” Sarah said. The introduction of an IPL hair removal machine now means that Sensorium Skin Technology can make your skin as smooth as a baby’s bottom, allowing your fresh and rejuvenated glow to shine through. A new makeup range is also available, the exclusive Jane Iredale collection, which is famous for incorporating makeup with skin care benefits. With a high SPF, Sarah has been using the specialised collection for years and can vouch for its effectiveness. Enhance your natural beauty through skin therapy with a purpose, and let the beauty of your personality shine through. www.corelife.com.au 53

Bec Clark Fish D’vine Starsign Capricorn Favourite Colour That’s a hard one! Autumn is my favourite season. Favourite Number 16 Favourite Food What I’m about to eat. Greatest annoyance Lies. Bec is a self confessed ‘food junkie’. You will NEVER meet anyone more obsessed with food, the aesthetics, the flavours, the bizarre, she explores food markets around the world and her palette is keen to explore anything edible! Bec is Fish D’vine’s best kept secret. As co-owner, alongside Kevin Collins, she’s been busy behind the scenes running the kitchen since the business opened. Born in Box Hill Melbourne, Bec started her career in the kitchen at the age of 15. Bec managed a pub called ‘The Pelican’ in Fulham, in the UK, where she met the love of her life, Mark, (better known as Dr Rum who heads up the Rum Bar at Fish D’vine). The pair were travelling Australia in a camper van back in 2001, they had run out of money by the time they arrived in Airlie Beach and literally had enough cash left to buy some diesel to head north or a cask of wine. Obviously, the cask of wine won and Bec partnered with Kevin to open their first restaurant Pescatori’s. Dr Rum declares it’s not easy to love a food junkie. Their spare room and in fact the entire house, has more cookbooks than the British Library and Harvard University put together! He’s had to explore the unknown by her side searching for food carts the world over as her hunger for knowledge and flavour perpetually grows. “The next country I want to visit is the Caribbean... purely because Dr Rum and I can explore the concept of rum and food matching. It’s enticing to visit every distillery and the unchartered cocktail and food matching possibilities to bring back to Fish D’vine and the Rum Bar,” she said.

We asked her to sum up food, she literally couldn’t stop talking! “Ooooh it’s an exhilarating passion, something that you never stop learning, the culture, history and traditions still blow me away! Italians have risottos, the Spanish have paella, the Indians have biryani it’s all different ways of absorption, some you stir, some you don’t. Don’t get me started on the spice trade!”. We simply don’t have enough words to cover this food junkies obsession.

They are just a highlight to spend time with after a physically challenging week in real estate. I entered a career in real estate after working with a building company for 15 years. I was a partner in the building company, building and selling our own properties, and I was also running a modelling school, teaching deportment and grooming in the evenings. This too was a very rewarding career helping young people become more confident and teaching life skills. I really missed the contact of meeting new people and, as a local, was well known in the community after years of raising funds for special needs children and adults. The reward of helping people achieve their dreams is so satisfying. Travelling to Europe with two of my children has been my most memorable experience. We saw Italy France and Malta. Women in pilates

After many years of working within the health industry as a Business Manager pushing pens, crunching numbers and working behind the scenes I found myself looking for new challenges.

While I wanted to stay within the health and Wellbeing profession I knew it was time to create something fresh and new for the Mackay community - I was totally hooked on Pilates and did a number of classes every week and was loving the changes to my body. I felt strong, energised, taller and mostly my niggling back issue from a silly ski accident were starting to ease up. While chatting to my husband one day I told him that I wanted to open up a Pilates Studio. After doing my initial training I started with a home business and before to long it got so busy that it was time to head out to the big world. PowerCore Pilates opened its doors in January 2014 and has been going great guns since them.

Open SUN MON -

I have four of the most talented and exceptionally wonderful team members working along side of me and together we have over 25 years of combined experience. I must also add I have brilliant front desk staff and a mastermind husband who is very much involved...had to add his plug! And of course always giving thanks to the wonderful clients who share in our studio since opening the doors. You guys totally rock! Everyday we experience and see both men and women become a stronger, leaner, taller version of themselves. Pilates promotes physical harmony and balance for people of all ages and all physical limitations, while providing a refreshing and energising workout both on the mats, equipment and private sessions. You our clients are our number one!

The Coolsculpt Story People in Mackay now have access to the latest in fat reduction technology called Coolsculpt. It has taken years of research to finally bring it into clinical practice. The concept is simple. You freeze the fat away. But there were many technical innovations needed to actually build this very smart machine and make this technique a reality. The benefits are that you don’t need an operation, injections or drugs. It is also cheaper because there are no hospital costs. It is done here in the rooms at 32 Brisbane Street. It is not invasive and there is no downtime. After freezing an area for about 1 hour 25% of the fat cells usually die or apoptose over the next 2-3 months and there is often some skin take up as well. You don’t have to exercise or do anything special but a healthy lifestyle helps to stop you putting on further weight. Coolsculpt is good for treating rolls and buldges that you can grasp with your hands. An applicator is applied around the roll. There is a freezing feeling for a few minutes then after that there is usually no other sensation. You can read a book or bring your computer along to keep you occupied over the next hour or so. People with a lot of adipose tissue may still need to have liposuction which can be carried out by Dr Bushell-Guthrie. But for those who have stubborn bulges or rolls such as on the abdomen, thighs hip handles, back or upper arms that they can’t shift Coolsculpt offers an exciting new dimension

long lasting lip colour

Total Face Planning It wasn’t that long ago when the only choice for someone who wanted to reverse and slow down the appearance of ageing was a surgical procedure. Unfortunately, with surgery comes a number of unwanted problems including downtime, increased risk of complications and, lastly, the very large financial burden. The other major concern was the possibility of not being satisfied with the results and, unfortunately, once the procedure had been done there was no turning back. Over the last 10 years the options for non-surgical procedures has blossomed. We are now in the age of anti-wrinkle injections, fillers of different types, lasers for redness, pigmentation, sun damage and scarring (just to name a few). What this has meant for all of us is that we now have so many options at our disposal to help reverse and slow down the appearance of ageing without the major risks, downtime, the large financial commitment. Most importantly, we can continue to look natural, albeit refreshed and more youthful. It really does now give us the option to look the best we possibly can. These techniques have continually been refined over the last 4-5 years. Instead of chasing a line here, filling a crease there we are now looking at what defines natural beauty and where does that appearance of ageing come from. Why do we get those deep creases near our mouth? What about the dark circles and sunken appearance under our eyes and what about those jowls? We are now in an exciting time with these options. It has progressed to the stage at Allure where we develop full plans in what we call ‘Total Face Planning.’ With Total Face Planning we sit down with photographs and address the concerns that the client has. On top of this, we assess all facets and regions of the face, not just the frown lines or the jowls. We look at the skin, the forehead, temples, the brows, the cheeks and cheek bones, around the eyes, the lips and jowls just to name a few. Together we develop a plan. Because of the improving technology of lasers and fillers and the longer lasting results that can be achieved, this plan can be done over as short or longer period of time that suits the client and their budget. Throughout the process, as I work on the structure and the other layers of improvement the client can start to see those more youthful, fresher and, importantly natural appearance start to take shape. It doesn’t just end there though. We also help with education in regards to active cosmeceuticals or as I like to call them, ‘Cosmetic Medicine.’ Those home products that will actually make a difference but not break the budget. With Total Face Planning and ongoing care the age of turning back the clock really is here.

horoscopes TAURUS APRIL 21- MAY 20 Affairs at home could keep your mind occupied for some time. Be very careful with the decisions you make regarding them. They have a very long ranging affect. There is some travel indicated. Do not listen to rumours and do not spread any around either. A family member may rub you the wrong way. Be tactful. There may be gain through lottery or a gamble. Do not act hastily. Talk things over first, otherwise you could be upsetting people who matter to you. GEMINI MAY 21 - JUNE 21 There are some rather strange happenings occurring during this period. Be extra careful with possessions and do not leave your valuables unattended at any stage. A most successful period ahead, with opportunities to make progress in career and bank balances. You get more attention from the people that matter. Romance is in the air. Most of you may have to alter plans. Someone from the past may contact you and this could have a great influence on the decisions you make. CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 Some rather important papers may be mislaid during this period. Happenings that will bring surprises may have you doubting your sanity. A very successful period for money matters as well as undertakings is indicated. The social scene could be very hectic and it is possible to mix business with pleasure. Romance is in the air. A difficult period coming up. A lot of self-restraint and tact is called for. You could do well with an investment or snapping up a bargain and making a profit by selling something of no value to you. LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 22 Be very specific about your intentions. People may get the wrong impression otherwise. Sudden travel arrangements may have to be made but could be quite profitable and beneficial to career matters. More enjoyable time should be had by most and a good period for making new friends and enjoying old ones. The job you have been hoping for should now be in your reach. Big changes ahead for most and many will be moving or heading far away from their usual haunts. You might need to discipline someone close to achieve his or her own best. VIRGO AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 23 There may be some problems coming up due to computer mix-ups. On the social scene, things are looking quite good. You should be able to decide what you can expect from the future. Lucky period but someone older could upset your plans. Do not travel without all bookings and accommodation sorted out. A problem from the past should now have a chance to heal. A happy period in which luck is with you in many ways. Any problems with the family should be sorted out now. Interesting, even if a little apprehensive, future in front of you. LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23 There could be some tempting offers made to you as to advancement that may not be to your advantage. Do not mix business with pleasure. Take care in all you say and do, many eyes are watching. Don’t fall behind in any commitments or make promises you may not be able to keep. More travel for most. Circumstances could be misleading. Don’t make decisions based on hearsay. Unusual incidents. Most could be assured of more excitement one way or another. Health needs more care so watch your diet and get more exercise. SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 - NOV 22 Make sure you know what goes on at work or you may make some embarrassing mistakes. Your decisions in life will take a different route. You should be taking some positive steps to improve your health and fitness. Problems that have plaqued you lately should now be solved. Love life improvements also indicated. Good time for property dealings or career matters in real estate. You should be able to enjoy some good social time and you could be lucky in what people offer you as presents. SAGITARIUS NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 20 You should be able to catch up on some tasks which were laid aside. New friends could bring new ideas for you to try out. This in turn could be of benefit to your career. Your personal life should be happier and you should

be enjoying yourself now. People that matter could be very impressed with your work and this could mean more financial security. There could be some curious echoes from your past. Make sure you do know what people mean to avoid disappointments later. Romance is in the air and some secrets could become public. CAPRICORN DEC 21 - JAN 19 A very favourable period is indicated with particular attention to your appearance and diet. You will have to give someone another chance. Keep a tight rein on your purse strings. Could be some news of a pleasant nature bringing with it the hope of gaining something you really want. Try to develop that extra push you’ll need to further your ambitions. A romantic overture could surprise you. Make sure your work program is not too heavy. You could be rather tense and overreach yourself. You may be impatient with people because they don’t agree with your point of view. AQUARIUS JAN 20 - FEB 19 Make sure you have all the facts at hand before making any decisions. Read the small print very carefully. Someone may be offering you their help. Be sure there is no snag attached to it. The odd or unusual could bring about changes in your established routine. Tackle pending matters before they back up. Wiser to rely on yourself rather than on others. A lost object could surface. Some degree of irresponsibility is indicated and, for some, an accident-prone period if you don’t concentrate. Something inspired could disturb your usual routine. The solution to an old problem could surface. Most will certainly become entangled in a whirl of activity and yet you don’t seem to be getting anywhere. PISCES FEB 20 - MARCH 20 There is some financial luck indicated and someone will help you make up your mind regarding an important decision. Your career needs serious contemplation. The ambitious will be in touch with those who are in a position to advance their career aims. Money shouldn’t be a major problem. Love life should be warmer. Whatever you want during this period could come about, if you are prepared to ask the right people. Make sure all your affairs are open and above board and you shouldn’t have any problems. Unexpected events could throw you out of gear until you get the overall picture. Energy levels could be high so it would be wise to involve yourself in something energetic to get the kinks out. ARIES MARCH 21- APRIL 20 A friend may give you some sound advice and help you make a decision which could have a big influence on your future. There will be some big changes in your life, especially in your love life. It is a very beneficial period ahead. Many will get the opportunity to advance their position. A friend may have a great influence on your outlook on life. There is romance in the air. This is a very favourable period in your life. There are gains in the finance and romance sector. Watch out for someone at your workplace who is not kindly towards you. www.corelife.com.au 71

ANZAC Centenary

Our miracle, Audrey Giving birth is one of the most emotional gifts a couple can give to the world and, while it can be a straightforward process for some, many others struggle to conceive. It can be an emotionally draining process, especially when it seems that hope is lost. However, many couples are finding success through the use of alternative therapy, even after traditional medical options have been unsuccessful. Melissa and Michael Chambers knew from the outset that falling pregnant would be difficult. Melissa was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome) and had always had a very irregular menstrual cycle. After three years of trying, the couple visited an obstetrician and gynecologist and tried assisted fertility with the use of a fertility drug. Melissa developed hyperactive ovarian syndrome and fell ill. After eight months of injections, multiple scans and hefty medical bills, Melissa didn’t want to feel unwell anymore and went to her GP for advice. Her GP recommended Scott Martin from Australian Natural Fertility, as he had achieved excellent results with other couples in a similar situation to Melissa and Michael. “I didn’t know what to expect. I had never tried acupuncture before and I’ll admit that I was a little skeptical. However, I had reached the point that I was willing to try anything.” “Scott was fantastic at understanding how I felt. I was at my last tether and had become depressed from the illness and no result, so initially my acupuncture sessions were more about making me feel better and healthy again.” “During the acupuncture I felt a tingling sensation and Scott assured me that this meant it was working. It was incredibly relaxing. Often I fell asleep and woke feeling incredibly refreshed. “When I was ready to try for a baby again, Scott changed the acupuncture and I also took Chinese herbal medicine. He used a cupping technique to draw toxins away from the body. It wasn’t long after that when we fell pregnant,” Melissa said. Scott continued acupuncture throughout the pregnancy, initially to lessen the risks of miscarriage and then to help Melissa’s body condition for the birth. “I felt great throughout my pregnancy and I really believe Scott’s methods helped immensely with that. He was easy going, down to earth and didn’t baffle me with technical details. I always felt comfortable and, thanks to him, we now have a beautiful baby girl,” Melissa said. Melissa and Michael’s daughter, Audrey, is 16 months old, and the couple take every opportunity to enjoy time spent with her. They will look at having another child in the future. However, for the moment, are enjoying every moment with their miracle. “We will definitely head back to see Scott when we feel it’s time to begin trying again,” Melissa said. It is inspiring to see in the Mackay community that the Anzac Spirit lives on through our youth. Each year for the past 13 years, I have witnessed the reverence and understanding that our children have displayed on Anzac Day. At either the Dawn Service or the Anzac Day march, many students engage in this simple though significant ceremony to acknowledge those who have fought and those who have fallen to protect ours and our allies’ nations. It is extremely satisfying to see each year the increase in the number of schools, and therefore students within our community participating in these events. This, to me, indicates that the foundational values that Australia was built on: mateship, respect, tolerance, dignity, pride and trust, are still very much alive and observed within our youth. This year, marking 100 Years of the Anzac, was particularly important to Australians as a nation and us as the Mackay community. The legacy of the Anzac spirit for Australia and New Zealand needs to continue as it is a powerful point of reference to originate connection and draw from when required in other periods in our lives. Solidarity to reflect, control and attachment of emotion, understanding, compassion and empathy are tenets that are put into practice during the Anzac period, though should also be taught, exhibited and honed through opportunities in our developmental environments, our schools. The body of Jeff Buckley was found floating in a harbor leading to the Mississippi River. Buckley had disappeared the previous Thursday while swimming in a Memphis harbor.

Dracula simia and dracula gigas are species of orchids that look strikingly similar to a monkey’s face. Just by looking at the pictures, it’s really not difficult to tell how the monkey orchid was named so. Ever since it went viral on social media, its very existence has been met with scepticism. However, the flower does indeed exist.

Researchers believe that despite their meat-free diet, gladiators were well-built, muscular people who were larger than modern-day athletes, giving them extra protection from the blows.

The gladiators of the ancient world were fearsome warriors who often had no choice but to fight or die. Many aspects of their lives were optimized to tailor them to the bloodsport. When you think of a gladiator’s diet, it’s easy to envisage a mighty warrior messily devoring a juicy steak. The truth, it seems, is that many gladiators were actually vegetarians, eating a diet consisting of healthfoods such as beans, grains, oatmeal, and dried fruit.
