NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THIS, BUT I SNUCK IN THE SIDE DOOR TO GET WHERE I AM TODAY. Ever since I was a teenager I dreamt of working for a magazine, coming up with amazing concepts and new ideas for world-changing publications which never left the planning stage. I then took a massive detour on these ambitions, completing a Batchelor’s Degree in Geography at university before deciding to explore the world. My travels took me to Australia where I settled down and ran my own café business for four years. After this I felt a bit lost, I was 32, was it too late to follow my dreams?

SARAH SMITH – With over 10 years’ experience and an initial consult starting at $220.00 why wouldn’t you ensure you were fully protected.

Contact one of our family lawyers, John or Sarah for more information

It was then I saw an ad for Media Sales Consultant for a local printed publication. I had no sales experience but hoped this could be my way into the exciting world of print media. I wasn’t disappointed. It turns out I am really good at sales and I loved being part of the dynamic world of print media, deadlines and sharing stories that mattered. Two years later, my career launched to a whole new level when I took a position as Sales Manager at Core Life Magazine. Within six months I had proven myself in sales and within a year I was given more responsibilities. Two years later I became Managing Editor. Every day I am blessed to work alongside my boss and dearest friend Rebecca Douthwaite who recognised my dedication and passion, gives me the opportunity to live my dreams and shares the vision. Despite no real credentials in my chosen career (I never did use that Geography degree!) I now live the dream every day. With my recent Cancer Curve Ball (turn to page 83 to see the update), I realise how important it is to do the things we dream of now and not later. As we look forward to Christmas and the beginning of 2020 – let’s make it a year where we go through the side doors or do whatever it takes to realise our dreams.

GIVING THE ELIXIR OF LIFE TO RURAL COMMUNITIES IN VIETNAM

Water is at the core of sustainable development and is critical for socio-economic development, thriving ecosystems, food production and for human survival itself. When given the opportunity to become a part of the Water Utility Improvement Program (WUIP) in Vietnam, Whitsunday Water; the water and wastewater business of Whitsunday Regional Council; put their hand up to help rural communities in need. The opportunity arose through the Australian Water Association and will provide a team from the Whitsundays with unique staff development opportunities to gain international experience while contributing to sustainable development goals. The project was greatly encouraged by COO of Whitsunday Water, Troy Pettiford. “I believe this program is a fantastic opportunity to not only help a developing nation but also showcase the outstanding staff working within Council. It will be a two-way street when it comes to learning, I am keen to share design, operations and maintenance experience with our treatment technologies, system and network design for small regional towns. “Likewise, I am keen to understand challenges

and lessons learned by our Vietnamese partners so we can build our experiences and skillsets to improve efficiency and cut costs for our Whitsunday Region community,” Troy said. Troy is sending an experienced team of water and wastewater professionals from the Whitsundays to the project, where they will travel to Vietnam as well as guide water utility visitors from Vietnam here in the Whitsundays. The team is made up of Yestin Hughes – Principal Engineer, Civil & Environment; Peter Stapleton – Treatment Operations Manager and Janice Wilson – Principal Engineer – Water & Wastewater with planning, operations, design, asset management and maintenance experience across the three team members. “Yestin, Peter and Janice are outstanding professionals in the field of water and wastewater utilities and their skillsets are unique. The trio boasts a myriad of skills and qualifications that enables Council to provide benefits to our community through improved and efficient water services. Their passion for excellence in what they do makes me extremely proud to be involved with such a high-performance solution focused team,” Troy commented. Janice said that the team is driven to identify continuous improvement opportunities where

they can make something more efficient, drive cost savings or improve a community value outcome. She added, “By engaging with this project where we can share experiences with another country’s water utility, we are able to see how other utilities do business, identify opportunities that can be rolled out across the Whitsundays and establish working relationships that span a lifetime. We are very grateful this opportunity has been well supported across the entire organisation.” The Whitsunday team has been paired with a water utility (Viet Ha) from Nam Dinh, located about 1.5 hours south east of Hanoi. Janice mentioned, “Our initial visit in November includes a series of exciting events, such as workshops between the paired water utilities, a welcome reception at the Australian Consul General’s residence, meeting and greeting the Australian Ambassador and Consul General and Vietnam VIPs.” Not only will the exchange improve the delivery of water to regional communities in Vietnam, the experience gained by the team from the Whitsundays will open up opportunities for our own water utility to look at the efficiency of our own community water and wastewater facilities.

Jo, T’aire and Lavinia

A home away from home Peter, Alistair and Jo Houghton was emotional with the announcement.

You don’t know how much you need a home-away-from-home until you do. Providing a welcome respite from the hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities provide families of hospitalised children an area to take a break from the wards and increase their wellbeing. In an exciting revelation for the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regions; Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) North Australia and Mackay Hospital Foundation (MHF) recently launched a joint fundraising campaign to raise $650,000 for a Ronald McDonald Family Room. After more than five years of continual campaigning to receive this much-needed facility in Mackay, McDonalds franchisee, Niki Ramsay,

“It’s both incredibly exciting and a huge relief to be able to make this announcement, which will benefit countless families when they need support the most. We’ve managed to raise half the funds we need already for the construction, but there will be ongoing costs to continue to support families after the facility opens. We anticipate the room opening this time next year. “We encourage businesses to think outside the square and come up with fun ways they can support our very own Ronald McDonald Family Room, which will have an enormous impact, especially for families in our region who live rurally,” Niki said. Community Engagement Executive (Mackay &

Whitsundays) for RMHC North Australia, Lavinia Hutchison, added, “Having a Family Room here in Mackay would mean the world to families, keeping them together when they're off the ward. A space where they can take a breather, have a coffee and recharge their batteries. The response from the people of Mackay has been wonderful and shows a real sense of community spirit.” There is only one other Ronald McDonald Family Room in North Queensland, located at the Townsville Hospital. It has become a much-loved space, welcoming between 300 – 400 families each month, and has been utilised regularly by families from our own region. In 2018, more than 150 families accessed Ronald McDonald House at Townsville Hospital for a combined 2,246 nights.

Jo and Peter Houghton from Mackay know this feeling better than anyone. Within the Ronald McDonald House in Townsville’s first week of operation, their son, Alistair, was flown to Townsville with a serious head injury as a result of an accident at a Rugby match.

Whitsunday

Jo recalls, “It’s like a roller coaster, you have no control in that moment, you just have to hang on and go where it takes you. You don’t consider what you’re going to do when you get there, you only have thoughts of being beside your son’s side.” “I was by his bedside for two weeks, I couldn’t bring myself to leave. But Peter and our other children were looked after in Ronald McDonald house, the volunteers lending their support and taking away the stress of wondering what we were going to do in that time.” Peter added, “Once he started to recover, we were able to take Al to Ronald McDonald House for a night, where he could get a good night’s sleep in a dark room away from the buzz of a hospital.” Miraculously for the Houghtons, Alistair woke with his full memory other than the actual incident. Jo said, “After he woke, we quickly let him know he was in the hospital but that he was alright. The very first thing he asked was, ‘did we win?’ Peter and I just looked at each other dumbfounded and said, ‘yes, you won.’ The next thing he wanted to know was how many stitches he had. We are incredibly fortunate for the care he received to make a full recovery.” Alistair completed a degree in physiotherapy at JCU in 2016 and currently works at Physio Plus in Mackay. Having this facility closer to home will mean that more families, like the Houghtons, will have the restful space they need to seek solitude and the facilities to eat nutritious meals. The capital campaign for Mackay’s Ronald McDonald Family Room was announced at the biennial Flagon & Dragon Charity Luncheon last month, which raises much-needed funds for local sick children and their families within the Mackay region and has generously donated significant funds to help kick-start the fundraising efforts. Mackay Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Jo Whitehead said the Ronald McDonald Family Room will be a welcome addition to Mackay Base Hospital’s Child and Adolescent Unit and Special Care Nursery for families of children undergoing medical treatment. “Hospital stays can be a daunting and exhausting experience for our youngest patients and their families. The Family Room will offer a relaxing area to both local and out of town families who wish to take a meal break, utilise showers to freshen up or simply a space to relax away from hospital wards,” Ms Whitehead said. “We currently have more than 15 families who travel long distances each month for their children to attend appointments and undergo treatment at Mackay Base Hospital. These families in particular can feel quite displaced so we want the Family Room to provide a sense of calm and normalcy while they’re away from home,” she said. “Mackay Hospital and Health Service is overwhelmed by the support from Flagon & Dragon, Mackay Hospital Foundation and of course RMHC North Australia. We extend a heartfelt thank you for coordinating the community fundraising campaign and helping to make this project possible.” “The Family Room will provide a refuge for families who are going through a very tough time by offering a space to relax away from hospital wards and spend time together as a family,” she said. Mackay Hospital Foundation General Manager T’aire Olsen said they were delighted to be partnering with RMHC North Australia. “We are proud to be working together to support seriously ill and injured children and their families across the Mackay region,” Ms Olsen said. You don’t know how much you’ll need this facility until you do. Please consider donating generously to give families in their greatest time of need the comfort of home. To help support this important project for local seriously ill or injured children, visit https://fundraise.rmhc.org.au/ ronaldmcdonaldfamilyroommackay or contact RMHC North Australia on 07 4775 5600.

Lids For Kids RECYCLING PLASTIC BOTTLE TOPS TO MAKE PROSTHETIC LIMBS

It’s hot competition right now at Cannonvale State School to see which of the four Sports Houses can collect the most plastic bottle tops and, as a result create the most prosthetic limbs for kids in need. It takes roughly 500 lids to create one prosthetic limb and currently the Macona House are in the lead!

Lids for Kids is a clever initiative that saves bottle-tops from landfill and uses a 3D printer to transform them into prosthetic limbs which are changing the lives of children everywhere. The brainchild of innovative thinker Sean Teer, Lids for Kids first began in Werribee, a little community in Victoria. It has now swept the nation with over one million bottle caps collected by the Australian community to date. Cannonvale State School took-up the challenge locally by nominating it as their chosen fundraising project for this term. “We chose Lids for Kids, as it serves two purposes. Firstly, it raises an awareness for children who are in need of prosthetic limbs, and secondly, it helps keep plastic lids out of the ocean, endangering marine animals,” said Project Coordinator Peta Thomas.

The students are collecting bottle-tops and putting them into four wheelie bins (one for each house). The lids will then be collected and sent to a company in Melbourne that turns the lids into plastic filaments which are then fed into a 3D printer. It is a complicated process with an advanced software program and the results are incredible. Each freshly printed prosthetic limb is emblazoned with a unique and colourful design to make recipients feel confident and empowered.

is an important lesson for young minds and an inspiring project for the whole community to get behind. You do not have to be a student at Cannonvale State School in order to participate. They would love members of the community to get involved as well. HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: • Collect milk bottle, soft drink or flat water-based tops

A young boy called James Haines received a Batman inspired prosthetic and instantly became a real-life super-hero.

• Wash them and find a storage container for your collection

Each child at Cannonvale State School can be part of this exciting journey, witnessing how their hard work can change lives in the real world. This

• Drop them at the Cannonvale State School office or directly into the wheelie bins in the school hall

• Label each lid with either a number 4 or 5

THREE GENERATIONS WHO RUN, JUMP AND THROW Oceania gold for Mackay family In her first year competing as a master’s athlete, Les-Lee Reid didn’t dream of becoming an Oceania champion by the end of the season. But that’s exactly what happened.

an outstanding championship, coming away with multiple personalbests and nine medals from 10 events in the women 40 – 44 year age category.

The Mackay mum-of-three joined the Mackay Athletics Club earlier this year to help her son, Cale, progress with his running.

She won gold in the javelin, which is the event she was best at as a junior, and she was part of the goldwinning Australian 4 X 100m relay team. Her silvers were in shot-put, high jump, long jump, triple jump, 60m, and 100m. She took bronze in discus and fourth in hammer.

“I have three boys who are all really sporty, but Cale is the one who is into athletics. He does really well in the distance events from 800m and longer. He made it to the Capricornia Trial this year and he plays junior rugby league for Souths.” “I loved competing at school carnivals as a young girl, so I thought, why not give it a go,” LesLee said. A third generation of the family also competes with the Mackay Athletics Club. Les-Lee’s mum, Dawn Mansfield, also signed up this year and also competed at the Master’s Oceania Championships. Dawn is a co-founder of the LRC Running Club in Mackay so the move to athletics was a natural progression; with the added bonus of spending more time with her daughter and grandchildren. As a junior, she was a naturally talented athlete, competing in basketball, netball, athletics carnivals and the occasional game of softball. She was awarded sports person of the year in either 1967 or 68.

“I know my boys are proud of me although they don’t really show it, but my husband, Scott, is my biggest supporter and is extremely proud when telling others about my results,” Les-Lee commented. The busy family will now try and juggle a hectic sporting calendar; with rugby league being the main household passion.

Scott is a referee for the local Mackay Rugby League scene, he plays and referees Oztag and has represented Mackay in Oztag for the past four years. Les-Lee has also been a Queensland Oztag State of Origin representative in 2016 for Senior Mixed and went to Sydney to play against NSW.

Les-Lee was also a sporting allrounder as a junior. On horse-back, she competed at local gymkhanas. In 1994 she represented Queensland in the Prince Phillip Mounted Games in Melbourne.

Les-Lee commented, “Our eldest boy Alex has just started his first season of basketball. He is a referee with the Mackay & District Rugby League Referees (Junior and Senior grades) where he has been awarded with some fantastic achievements. At the Mackay Referees presentations, he was awarded Junior Touch Judge of the Year, followed by taking out the same award at the North Queensland Rugby League Referees presentations.

The pair were the only motherdaughter combo to enter the Oceania Championships, representing Australia. Les-Lee had

FamilyMatters When deciding which school to send their three children to, Andrew and Leighann Pini said it was an easy choice.

“It [St Catherine’s Catholic College] is sentimental to us both,” Leighann said. “We are both former students and my dad and his brothers also went to school at St Catherine’s. My Grandmother’s brother Tom Faust was also one of the first students.” Andrew’s parents Ray and Kay Pini also attended St Catherine’s in Proserpine when it was just the one Primary campus on Marathon Street. Andrew and Leighann now live on a sugarcane farm at Crystalbrook on the way to the Peter Faust Dam. When it came time for their eldest daughter Bella to move into Secondary College, Leighann said it was a natural decision. “A lot of Bella’s friends were going and they [St Catherine’s] have a good range of subjects to choose from.” “All three of my children have their own strengths. I think that what they need is here.”

Eldest child Bella enjoys the academic opportunities the Kindy to Year 12 College provides. She has a keen interest in Medicine and has recently undertaken work experience at QLD Radiology and Macaky Radiology. Middle child Jack loves keeping busy and working with his hands. For more than 2 years Jack has been selected in the College’s Sports Excellence Program and said he really likes the Extra INTAD classes provided by INTAD teacher Colin Melvin. As the youngest in the family, Alice leaves no stone unturned being a member of the Secondary Student Representative Council, while also sharing a passion for sports. This year Alice was also selected as part of the Sports Excellence Program and represented the College at Netball and Touch Football. So what’s the Pini’s advice for parents who are deciding where to send their child to school? “When the time comes as a parent encourage them in their chosen areas and support them,” Leighann said.

Bring Back The Volume This Christmas, one of the best gifts you can give to your loved ones, or yourself, is the gift of hearing. For Whitsunday Hearing’s new owner, Sarah Logan, seeing the delight return in people’s faces once their hearing is restored, is the best gift she could ever give. “It’s a joyous occasion to see their face beam with happiness as their hearing returns. Because hearing loss can happen over time, it’s not until it’s restored again that people realise just how much they have been missing out on. The simple things like the rustling of leaves in the trees or birds singing. More importantly, restoring hearing can greatly improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing by allowing them to communicate and socialise more effectively, feeling more connected,” Sarah mentioned. Sarah is the senior clinician and has been an audiometrist for more than 16 years. Originally from Geelong, she moved to Queensland in 2006. In 2014 she established her own private practice, Independent Hearing Solutions before purchasing Whitsunday Hearing this year. You should have your hearing tested regularly throughout your life, not just when you turn a certain age. Particularly if you are regularly within a noisy environment

Sarah added, “signs that you should come and see us are if you find you have to ask people to repeat what was said, turn the TV up louder or begin to avoid social situations for fear of embarrassment of saying the wrong thing or feeling left out, then that’s the time to have a diagnostic hearing test.” Hearing aids take time to adjust to and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. It’s important that you feel comfortable and confident with your hearing provider, as it is a journey you will travel together for the next five or more years. This is how long you will generally have your hearing aids for. Whitsunday Hearing is independently, locally owned and operated, providing continuity of service so you have the same clinician. Its office in Cannonvale is expertly staffed five days per week and appointments are also available after hours and weekends as required. Whitsunday Hearing now have an advanced FREE Touchscreen Hearing Check available in store now. This test does not replace a full diagnostic test, however it will identify if further testing is required. Visit whitsundayhearing.com.au for more information, and live life with volume.

WHY YOUR KIDS SHOULD HAVE THEIR EYES TESTED Your child’s eyes are special. In the early years, vision helps them find out about the world around them, about their home, about you. Later, as they go through school, their eyesight lets them learn and discover – in fact, about 80% of what is taught in schools is presented visually. Being able to see clearly is therefore incredibly important in your child’s overall development. It’s not surprising that we take your child’s eyesight seriously. Every bit as seriously as you do. Children’s eye tests are different from those for adults. At Specsavers Cannonvale, we use specially designed charts that allow children to recognise shapes or pictures, or even to match letters, rather than the traditional charts that you may be familiar with. This means that we

can test children’s eyes even if they are unable to read. Optometrists are specially trained to test children’s eyes. They know that the test room can feel a little intimidating to a young child so will use techniques to make it feel as welcoming as possible. You will, of course, be able to stay with your child throughout the test so you can see everything that happens. Even though some of the equipment used in your child’s eye test is different, it doesn’t mean that your child’s eye test is any less accurate than an adult’s. In fact, great care is taken to ensure that it isn’t. As well as checking the eyes, our optometrists also evaluate the muscles and associated structures to ensure they are healthy too.

They are all members of Mackay’s latest sporting powerhouse, the Phoenix Fury Roller Girls. Don’t let their sweet bravado fool you, they are absolute weapons on wheels who aren’t afraid to get banged up and bruised. But don’t let the physicality of the sport stop you from giving it a go. As the President of the Phoenix Fury’s, Nadia Clancy (Nadz #2) explains, it’s more about fun and friendship. “Roller Derby is more than just a sport for us; it’s a culture and a lifestyle. We promote and support competition among strong, determined and driven skaters with a passion for camaraderie, teamwork, fitness and fun,” she said. In choosing their name, the team wanted something which represented the heart of the players.

MEET (SOME OF) THE TEAM! Melissa Hodge (Melli Maim 93) At 45, Melissa is a mother of two grown lads. Maim is often called a vampire as her day job involves taking blood from patients. She is the league’s treasurer and loves to boast about bruises she has given or received.

Bec Labbett (Belle DeBrawl 84) At 35, Bec is a mother of two girls. She is the team’s head coach and vice president. Belle owns the track with her killer hips and butt, you’d best get out the way.

Sharon Middleton (Monkey Magic 76) Age 43, Sharon is a mum to a teenager. By day she weaves her magic on primary school students and by night she works her magic on the track. She is called Monks for short.

Krysten Butcher (Toast 105)

Nadia commented, “The Phoenix represents transformation and is the ultimate symbol of strength and renewal. For many of our ladies, this sport is about finding their inner strength again. The Phoenix represents overcoming darkness and rising to the challenge to become powerful and succeed.”

At 27, Krysten studies at university while balancing being a mum to two little girls and a little boy. Her husband Carl (Carlos the Jackal) is the team’s senior referee. You will be toast if you come in contact with Toast on the track.

With a lot of the members being parents, the team was designed to become an extension of their families.

The Phoenix Fury train twice a week leading up to the 2020 season which kicks off in February.

“Some of our team members have shift working husbands and babysitters are often impractical on Derby nights, so it was important for us to let the other members know that our children were safe and welcome to come and play while we did the same. We can often be seen skating around Mackay with our kids and husbands in tow on push bikes or in prams.”

Don’t think that because you can’t skate you can’t do this! The team will help you to develop your skills. Whilst the Phoenix Fury is an allfemale team, they have positions available for both men and women to come along and join the referee crew. Register your interest at

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL The natural feeling at this time of year is that 2019 has flown by so quickly. And what a year it has been for the Whitsunday community. ‘Building our Region’ has been the primary focus in 2019 as Council continues to improve key infrastructure which creates more local jobs. We reside in the best region in the world so improving liveability has been a high priority during my first term as Mayor.

Andrew Willcox Mayor

Council believes that providing residents with improved facilities and services will help us achieve our goal of an economically strong and thriving Whitsunday Region community.

Council projects activate Whitsunday Region FLAGSTAFF HILL

Council recently endorsed the concept design for the new Flagstaff Hill building and also awarded the demolition contract for the old building. The demolition commenced in late October and a further month is needed to clear the site, weather permitting. The public can still access the car park and the lookout area will also remain open during the demolition works. The concept plan will now go for detailed design which will take 8-10 weeks to finalise and then the tender for construction will be released. Division 6 Councillor Mike Brunker said it was great news that we can now get the ball rolling and demolish the old building and start construction of the new facility. “The concept plan will deliver a multi-purpose facility with a function area, a cafeteria style dining set-up and a cultural activities area. Concept image of the new Flagstaff Hill facility which will now go to the detailed design phase

“The building is designed to ensure all these areas make the most of the mazing 360 degree views that Flagstaff Hill is famous for,” he said.

LAKE PROSERPINE has further activated as a fishing, camping, boating mecca after Council recently awarded the tender for construction of a jetty and three pontoons as part of the Lake Proserpine Recreational facilities upgrade. Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Andrew Willcox hooked the funding for the project earlier this year landing a $1.5 million windfall. Director of Customer Experience Adam Hagy said the three jetties would be installed before Christmas and would hugely improve the visitor experience at Lake Proserpine. “We also have the camping areas being developed along with toilet facilities and refurbishment of the amenities blocks,” he said. Deputy Mayor John Collins said Council had developed a clear vision for establishing and improving recreational and tourist facilities at Lake Proserpine and the project would bring visitors to the region. “This Lake Proserpine Master Plan is an exciting step toward making Proserpine an even stronger regional town within the Whitsunday region.”

Landscaping works have also begun at the centre islands near the Bruce Highway and BP Service Station. The islands are currently being excavated and will be replaced with new trees, turf and entry signs leading into Proserpine. ECLIPSE FINANCIAL SERVICES IMPROVING WEALTH AND WELLBEING IN THE WHITSUNDAYS

FOR 15 YEARS

id you know that the number one cause of stress among Australian’s is money? But it’s not only those with a low income who worry about finance. The truth is, many of us are terrible with our money, no matter how little or how much we have. This is widely due to the fact that we just don’t understand how to manage it. Heck, most of us don’t even know how much interest we’re paying on our credit cards. This is at the heart of why Justin Butler became a financial planner. After many years of working with one of the big banks, he knew that people needed more help than what was traditionally offered. In 2003, he established Eclipse Financial Services right here in the Whitsundays, with a vision to simplify finance. This drive inspired Justin to establish a large database of free financial information on their website, where everyday people could learn about topics such as mortgages, investments, debt reduction and retirement.

“I believe that people achieve their financial goals more effectively when they have some level of understanding about their finance. Our online education centre is a way we can offer vast amounts of financial knowledge to PMS 2768 PMS 2728 PMS 382 c 100 | m 90 | y13 | k61

Since its inception, Eclipse Financial Services has been owned and operated by Justin and his wife Susan and ably assisted by Senior Financial Planner Nik Haratsis. To allow for rapid expansion into South East Queensland, Justin has joined forces with Greg Morianos, who will focus in his South East Qld region. Greg enjoyed an extensive career in the Australian Liquor Industry as a sales director, but spent the past 10 years studying financial planning. In 2018 he decided to follow his passion and make finance his new career path, utilising the connections he made with pubs and clubs throughout Queensland. “There wouldn’t be many publicans Greg hasn’t met. He has a wide network throughout Queensland in the hospitality industry and brings a strong understanding of finance to the table. He’s certainly an asset for Eclipse and it’s exciting to have a new level of passion helping expand the business,” Justin said.

Not only are they passionate about people and their wealth, Justin and Greg are passionate about the overall wealth and wellbeing of the community. They are both Directors of the Whitsunday Sportspark committee; Justin is the President after spearheading this project and has personally raised more than 8-and-a-half million dollars over three years for the project. “Stage one, fields and lighting is now complete and we move toward the next stages of incorporating a brand new club rooms and a trading club. Our vision is for it to become a smaller version of Mackay’s Harrup Park with a classy bar and bistro to attract top-level sporting events to the Whitsundays. It’s the first completely new sporting club to be established in Queensland in more than 25 years which hasn’t been achieved lightly,” Justin said. Moored offshore at Hardy Reef, 40 nautical miles from Airlie Beach, Reefworld is the setting for your spectacular overnight Reefsuite experience. The upgraded pontoon will provide an upgraded Reefsleep experience, with custom-made Reef Beds to give the ‘sleeping under the stars’ experience a level of glamping comfort. The upgraded package is now inclusive of all meals and drinks, so there’s no bar tab to pay at the end. Simply stay, play and sleep. Construction on the new pontoon is nearing completion, with installation expected this month with the first guests sleeping underwater in December. The three-storey structure will feature Reefsleep on the top deck, the middle deck will be for day-trip guests snorkelling Hardy’s Reef and will provide amenities, while the lower deck is below the waterline and will provide those lucky guests with luxurious Reefsuites. This is the most exciting development for Cruise Whitsundays since the company’s inception, bringing

what could be Australia’s most sought-after accommodation to the Whitsundays. Preserving the integrity of the reef is the number one priority during the installation and continued operation of Reefworld. The Cruise Whitsundays team is working hand-in-hand with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to ensure all elements of this project are approached in a sustainable and environmentally conscious manner. While there are a handful of underwater hotels around the world, this unique experience on the Great Barrier Reef is an unparalleled experience unlike any other. Watch a stunning sunset with a drink in hand before enjoying a starlit longtable dinner on the pontoon’s upper deck. After dinner, retreat to the privacy of your undersea accommodation. It really is a room with a view. To find our more, visit cruisewhitsundays.com www.corelife.com.au 49

THE EXCITING TRANSFORMATION AT 124 PALUMA ROAD IS PROGRESSING AND LOOKING SET FOR COMPLETION IN 2020

WHAT A YEAR FOR

WHITPRO

“A dream doesn’t become a reality by wishing it into being. it takes sweat, determination, passion and hard work.”

T

he move to 124 Paluma Road has been a labour of love for Tim and Norina and the team at Whitpro. After purchasing what they refer to as “ a massive clean up job and six acres of land”, the fun began. Add to the challenge, six months of unrelenting rain and you’ll start to get a picture of what was ahead of them. Director, Norina Kent, shares how some items just kept re-appearing after they were convinced they had removed the last of them. “We discovered that somehow fire extinguishers grow like weeds! So do empty water bottles, granite offcuts, rusted machinery parts and broken pots. We came across 98 fire extinguishers! We had to remove them as quickly as possible before they continued multiplying,” she laughed. Norina and Tim are particularly fond of the Galbraithe Creek that winds its way around the back of the acreage. “We love the creek that surrounds this beautiful property. While admiring the vegetation around the creek one day, we watched a large pink inflatable swan meander through. Norina joked “After much discussion, it was decided that it was not an Australian native and could therefor be humanly removed.”

The years Best Moment A highlight for Norina was when her son Chris, said that he would like to get married at the new site. “He approached us in the midst of the property clean up and said he would like to get married here. Tim and I looked at him perplexed and questioned; “Are you sure?” A nod from Chris and Alie and the challenge was accepted. “It was a stressful lead-up to get the property ‘wedding-ready’ but it was the best day we’ve had at Paluma Road to date. It will be a fantastic venue for weddings in the future.”

AFTER

YEAR IN REVIEW

The years Scariest Moment “One of our 12 tonne tippers, full of sand, rolled backwards with wheels locked in a terrifying slide down Mt Whitsunday; before our employee Steve and our son Chris made the decision to hit a retaining wall rather than end up across Shute Harbor Rd. A decision that saved lives. The Kenworth tipped on its side and earned the two an ambulance ride. Quick thinking guys!”

The Paluma Road property features an abundance of maturing coconut trees, all planted by Graham Hawke back in the day. However, they all needed denutting. That was the start of sending Norina up trees! Under Tim’s patient expert eye, she has been learning how to climb and denut coconuts. A coconut climbing race between Norina and Tim will be a feature of the 2020 calendar! 2020 is nearly upon us, the irrigation shop is soon to open, the landscape bulk yard is developing nicely, work has started on the nursery and the garden supplies area and then our attention will be on the long-awaited café. “We love this property and we are sure you will too.”

N

O BUSINESS GETS THROUGH A TRADING YEAR UNSCATHED.

“I don’t know of many small businesses that could make it through any year without facing their share of challenges”, said Mel Cox, director and CEO of PD Law. “And to be honest, I think it’s a good thing for business owners to know they’re not on their own – they need to know everyone does it tough at one time or another, or for uncomfortably long periods! The real difference is what you do with that information in that environment. Do you burn energy in panic mode or do you take positive steps armed with the information you have? You have to choose the latter”. Positive steps indeed. Equipping itself with hard data on an ever-changing landscape in their industry, PD Law has continued to push to ensure that it delivers a service that clients want now, rather than what law firms and lawyers traditionally think clients have wanted. “Although the reality is that you never really arrive because change is now so intrinsic in our industry, we’re excited with the changes we continue to implement, and with what we’ve got planned. So yes it’s never ending, but it’s incredibly rewarding”, she said.

That’s not to say there’s no room for traditionally highly valued things like decent service. Conveyancing manager Bernie Gunders is alive to the importance of speedy service. “You’ve got to think about your clients first and foremost. It’s not a matter of ‘getting on to it’ when it suits us. It’s more a matter of working out what they need, how we can meet that need, and how we can deliver a solution. Everyone’s needs are different and to make people fit into a rigid service model just won’t work”. Recognising this has prompted PD Law to open a full-time office in Proserpine. “Again, it’s about servicing your clients”, said Director Stuart Bell. “We’ve got a strong client base in and around Proserpine and we wanted to acknowledge this by showing we’re committed to servicing the region, full time. I started my career here with my father [John Bell] and being a local, it’s something I always wanted to get back to.” Opening early November, the entire team is looking forward to becoming part of the community, with different areas of expertise being serviced on each day, be that family or criminal law advice, buying and selling properties and farms, business and commercial advice or estate planning.

Reef Gateway Celebrates T

here is no better way to discover the characters of a country town than to visit the local pub. In Airlie Beach, the Reef Gateway Hotel has been a local favourite since 1986. Dave and Joy Seawright were the original custodians who built the iconic hotel in what was a rural location surrounded by farmland. When John O’Neill took over the ownership in 1990, some of the locals doubted it would be a good investment. The view that it was ‘too far from town’ and that ‘no-one would go that far for a drink’ was quickly proven wrong. Today, the fact

that it has ample parking and is away from the congested hustle and bustle of the main street, is what has made it ever more popular with families and locals.

Under the ownership of Australian Venue Co. the Reef Gateway Hotel is moving through an exciting time of transition. With a new Venue Manager from Melbourne and a Head Chef from Mission Beach, there is excitement in the air as the menu is getting a makeover. Don’t worry, your favourite steak or chicken parmy isn’t going anywhere. Classic family favourites in hearty service sizes will still be on the menu, but the quality will be taken to the next level. The menu will feature an incredible array of fresh, locally caught seafood and regional

meet the Chris manager Simpson “I love how locals are so passionate and proud to showcase the beautiful Whitsundays to visitors. That’s a big part of who we are at Reef Gateway Hotel. I’ve been welcomed into the team like family and that’s the warm hospitality experience we strive to create for our patrons too.” Bringing big-city refinement to one of our favourite local watering holes, Reef Gateway’s new Venue Manager, Chris Simpson, is one of the most fervent foodies you’ll find. With an extensive career in hospitality spanning from Victoria to Western Australia; Chris’s ambition to elevate the experience for diners has been welcomed in the Whitsundays. With an emphasis on creating a family-friendly environment here at the Reef Gateway Hotel, Chris brings many years of experience managing family restaurants as well as spending time in his uncle’s rural pub in Western Australia. “My uncle’s pub in Broomehill was a great place to soak up the atmosphere of a classic outback pub, where most people in town knew each other and the pub was the focal point. Nothing beats a cold beer and a great feed in a place where you feel welcome,” Chris said.

make the Reef Gateway experience even better. “That’s an exciting part about a career in hospitality. Industry goals constantly change and you need to evolve to move with them. I particularly enjoy meeting people in the industry who can offer advice and share thoughts on how to grow,” he said. After spending time in Brisbane, Chris moved to Airlie Beach for a fresh start and change of lifestyle. He joined the Proserpine Golf Club and is learning to adapt to the ‘island-time’ way of life. “Things don’t move quite as fast here as they do in a big city. There, everyone is in a rush to do it now, get it done now. Whereas here, things are a bit more relaxed. I’m learning to pull back a little and enjoy life.” He’s particularly enjoyed getting to know the Reef Gateway staff and some of the regulars, who have been more than happy to share their favourite places to explore in the region. Chris added, “My parents visited from Melbourne last month and we went for a day trip to Whitehaven Beach. It’s been a great experience to see the islands and get an appreciation for why this is one of the most desirable tourism spots in the World.”

His ambition is to work alongside the head chef to bring a higher level of dining experience to the Reef Gateway.

FAVOURITE HOLIDAY EXPERIENCE?

“People’s expectations change over time. While everyone loves ‘pub grub,’ diners still expect their food to look amazing and taste sensational. We want to rise above and go from run-of-the-mill to exceptional. I enjoy spending time with the chef to learn from his experience and how together we can

“I went on a corporate trip to Bali not so long ago. It was a great opportunity to get to know colleagues outside of business. Where we stayed, there was a bar right on the beach called the Naked Coconut. Daily sunsets with a cold beer, that was paradise right there.”

Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical (MDTM) is the epitome of a one-stop-shop, providing a full range of tyres, mechanical services, parts, mine-compliant lease vehicles and even quality 4x4 accessories. Having heavily invested in the latest specialist tools and diagnostic software that is specifically tailored for the software in your vehicle, MDTM can perform diagnostic checks in a fraction of the time. Not only is there a significant time reduction in checking your vehicle, the accuracy in error detection means that the actual fault is detected quickly without a time-consuming trial-and-error approach. It’s the focus on service that led to MDTM winning the MTA’s distinguished Business of the Year award in 2017, along with the excellence in customer service award. Diversifying and always looking for the next opportunity to delight its clients is what kept MDTM strong through the downturn. As owner, Carolyn Fritz explains, it wasn’t easy, but they 58

don’t need to drive-in-drive-out. That money then stays in our community,” Carolyn said.

“No doubt the downturn had a huge effect on Moranbah and the Isaac region in general. It wasn’t an easy time, but we were proud of the fact that we didn’t have to make any staff reductions to stay in business. We made sacrifices in other areas and looked at ways of expanding the service we offer to capture a wider client base.

Her passion for the Isaac Region and Moranbah is part of the reason Carolyn received the 2019 Inspiring Woman in Isaac award. The Inspiring Women in Isaac awards paid tribute to women of all ages who inspire, encourage and make a positive difference to the lives of those around them. Carolyn has also been on the Board of Directors for the GW3, Greater Whitsunday Alliance; an independent regional economic development body to represent and advocate for the collective Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday region.

“We have 38 employees currently, we’re still one of the biggest privately-owned family business employers in the Isaac. We never lost sight of the fact that our employees and their families are a part of this community, so we supported as many local causes and community groups as possible. We still provide work experience for Moranbah State High School students, we have six students who work part-time with us after school to gain experience. It’s important to keep that community engagement and provide opportunities locally for the next generation, “We have also sponsored employees to receive permanent residency and some of those have gone on to become Australian citizens. We provide housing in the town for employees who need it, to keep families together so our workers

“It’s an honour to provide a voice for Moranbah and the Isaac, advocating for our community,” Carolyn added. In 2018, MDTM won the Connecting in the Community Award in the Resource Industry Network Awards. This illustrates you don’t need to travel to the big centres for top mechanical servicing, spare parts and accessories, what you would find spread throughout a big city, you can find in one handy business in Moranbah. Managers Troy Avenell (Tyre Manager) and Michael Eve (Mechanical Manager) bring with them over 40 years’ experience so you know you’re in safe hands. In its extensive tyre department on Mills Ave, you’ll find all sizes and brands for all kinds of vehicles; from wheelbarrows, cars and trucks to underground mining equipment and earth movers. You may not know that MDTM are a Dunlop super dealer. It is also an Isuzu service centre, the only one in the area approved for warranty repairs and provide genuine service and parts. MDTM is

also an authorised Holden warranty service centre. In fact, they can perform repairs for most brands of vehicles without voiding the warranty. They perform repairs for all lease companies in Australia; if your vehicle is through a lease company, you can get your repairs and servicing done at MDTM without issue. This division provides mine site compliant vehicles for organisations who require a vehicle in a hurry to access mine sites. Not only are MDTM well-known for its exceptional knowledge and service, but also the generous support it gives to the Moranbah community. Having been in the local community for 34 years, they focus on giving to organisations which support the livlihoods of their employees. They are supporters of the local bowls club and the Moranbah Miners rugby league club. Manager, Michael, is the manager of the A-grade women’s team and is also club secretary. MDTM

The project is arranged through a local church in Moranbah to deliver some Christmas joy to children in need. “I’m really proud of our team for getting behind this project. Each employee fills a shoe box with goodies to suit a boy or girl of a specific age range. It’s something different and great to raise morale and Christmas spirit,” Carolyn said. LIVING THE DAYDREAM

CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER DAYDREAM ISLAND

IMAGINE AN IDYLLIC PLACE BEYOND THE HORIZON. THEN… GO THERE. Daydream Island is undoubtedly like no other place on Earth. The intimacy, luxury and diversity spread throughout this boutique island paradise invokes true feelings of being swept away in your own private daydream. Following an extensive redevelopment and reopening, Daydream Island has once again sparked the desire for locals and visitors alike to live the daydream. The island’s new Chief Operating Officer, Dilip Madhok, was somewhat destined to come to Daydream Island. Growing up in India, Dilip would often dream of idyllic locations beyond the horizon. While studying his Bachelor’s Degree, Dilip worked parttime in hospitality but it soon became his passion. He couldn’t see himself being behind a desk as an accountant for the rest of his life, he wanted to spread his wings and see where hospitality would take him. With experience in airlines and accommodation, Dilip’s niche was formed in taking hotels and resorts to the next level. “The glitz and glamour of an opening or re-opening for any business is very exciting. So much effort goes into that moment, but what happens after that? My job is to ensure a business still builds and improves beyond that point,” Dilip said. His career has taken him to some diverse cultural destinations, including China, Bangladesh and Vietnam. Some of his most memorable moments have come from assisting VIPs during highpressure scenarios. Soon after the opening of a new hotel in China, Dilip oversaw operations when the hotel held an annual BRICS conference, between five of the world’s most influential leaders. With Dilip speaking Chinese as well as his Indian heritage, he was integral in assisting with arrangements between the Chinese and Indian governments for the conference. While working at the Sheraton Mirage in Port Douglas many years ago, Dilip hosted Bill Clinton. Few people realise, the former President was at this location on September 11, 2001. Dilip commented, “What impressed me the most about President Clinton was how charismatic he was. When he spoke, he had a way of capturing the attention of the entire room and you were drawn to his story. The events of that tragic day in history presented a unique set of challenges, this is why an establishment must be prepared for absolutely anything.” If you haven’t seen the new Daydream Island, Dilip encourages you to experience the improved level of luxury. “We’ve taken what people loved and made it better. Being such a short boat trip from the mainland, locals are loving the new dining options and swim-up bar. It’s possible to experience paradise in a daytrip, but if you can spend the night, the rooms are simply superb to complete the dream weekend. “The Living Reef is bigger and better than ever, our marine biologists are working behind the scenes to repropagate parts of the reef surrounding the island. Our open-air cinema will be open again in coming months to entice locals over for a meal and movie under the stars. Some exciting developments for the near future, we will soon be offering some bespoke experiences from the island to our sister island, South Molle, as renovation work begins to rejuvenate that destination. Unique scuba experiences and romantic picnics on a remote island are two possibilities,” Dilip said. Live your daydream and indulge in an unforgettable island escape, beyond the horizon.

OPENING DOORS OF OPPORTUNITY Where most people see a closed door as an obstacle, Ben Chick sees it as a door of opportunity, ready to lead to a new adventure. The founder of Explore Property Mackay started his business in the middle of the downturn, but while others thought it was a risky move, Ben knew it would come down to two key elements, passion and people. “There’s never a good time; I felt that the time was right for me, so I went for it. I always loved real estate and dreamt of having the best agency in Mackay. It still drives me today,” he said. Critical to Ben’s success is his ability to support his team to grow as individuals. He has learnt that their own success and development is important to the growth and success of the business. “Seeing people succeed at anything in life is what drives me. It’s never a competition, there’s enough business for everyone and everyone has different challenges; yet the people who work hard continue to have a successful life. I look forward to every day, good or bad, and understand that business is just about the people. Always has been, always will be!” To thrive in a market while others struggled took a willingness to adapt alongside an understanding that finding good people was key. When challenged with a busy work life, he added, “Sometimes finding the right person is like finding a unicorn, but to achieve work life balance it’s crucial to have that support network in place. As any business owner would know, it’s very hard to go from full-on to just switching off. That has been a huge learning curve for me but understanding that building a framework of great people around me ensures that when I do have time off, I can literally switch off.” Ben’s journey as the owner of Explore Property has been rewarding, offering opportunities both throughout Australia and overseas to gain valuable industry insight while helping to put Mackay on the map. “I’ve spoken at real estate conferences in New Zealand, South Africa, Melbourne, Brisbane, Townsville and Cairns. I love that Mackay itself is always a topical part of discussion about being a beautiful place once I show them the pictures of our region,” he commented. Something you may not know about Ben “I trekked the Kokoda trail in Papua New Guinea with a group of other real estate agents, raising $160,000 for the charity, Beyond Blue.” Explore Property is here to help with all your buying, renting and selling goals. With five mobile pool servicing vans on the road, the team efficiently cover the majority of the Mackay and Isaac region, from south to Carmila, north to Bloomsbury, west to Moranbah and everywhere in-between.

Brant has owned All Seasons Pools for 17 years, with varying business partners over that time, and his wife, Peta, is also a director of the business with seven years of experience. Brant is the senior technician while Peta oversees the retail component. They are joined by five experienced technicians. Michael Lyall is the Assistant Manager with 7 years of industry experience. Shelby Lewin brings 5 years of industry experience and is a Senior Pool Technician. Adam Thompson, Josh Love and Andrew Lindley round out the team with a combined 9 years of industry experience.

All Seasons provide free advice on how to maintain healthy pool water levels. “Instore we offer water analysis and personalised instructions on what your pool needs when you supply us with a sample. We are acutely aware of symptoms pools can experience seasonally in our tropical climate, and have extensive local experience to advise you,” Brant said. Alternatively, you can take the worry out of maintenance and have a pool technician visit you. “We offer regular monthly, fortnightly or weekly

TOURISM WHITSUNDAYS NOTE FROM CEO TASH WHEELER

ARE YOU LIVING THE DREAM? For most, the great Australian dream is to own your own home. You work hard for your money and the easiest way to keep it in your pocket is to invest in your own home. There is nothing more rewarding than owning your own home. With official interest rates at record lows and the banks fighting for business, there has never been a better time to get into the property market. Chances are that if you’re paying rent of $300, $400, or $500 per week then you can afford to invest in your own property.

Lenders are looking for clients that can tick these three (3) boxes.

✓ Stable Income - Fulltime, Permanent Part Time, Casual, SelfEmployed, Pensions, Family tax A & B allowances and childsupport payments all qualify.

✓ Evidence of a savings history, this could be bank account savings, rent paid to your landlord, gift from parents or even a parental guarantee.

✓ Good repayment record on your personal loan, car loan or credit card.

Ok, so you didn’t score 3 out of 3. You have been thrown a few curve balls and things have not always worked out, all is not lost! Many lenders will look at the bigger picture and consider the reasons and causes behind your financial blemish. In Queensland the First Home-Owners Grant of $15,000 is still available for eligible borrowers. The grant can be used as part of your deposit on a new home or a house land package that is offered by many builders.

To be eligible for the grant:

✓ You must be at least 18 years of age;

✓ You or your spouse must not have previously owned property in Australia that you lived in;

✓ You must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident (or applying with someone who is);

✓ You must be buying or building a brand-new home;

✓ The value of the home including the land is less than $750,000; ✓ You must move into the new home, as your principal place of residence, within 1 year of the completed transaction and live there continuously for 6 months.

There has never been a better time to buy the Dream Home. Interest rates are at record lows, house prices are affordable, and the Banks are fighting for business.

On 26 October the Whitsundays tourism industry was honoured at the regions’ premier event, The Whitsundays Tourism Awards. This year saw just shy of 400 people in attendance from right across the Whitsunday region when the industry descended upon the newly reopened Daydream Island Resort to celebrate. The awards aim to pay tribute to the tremendous contribution made by the regions’ tourism operators and service providers. Congratulations to all the winners! It is important to remember it is a night of celebration, not just for those who take home awards, but for each and every one who works in or contributes to tourism, whom without, we would not have this dynamic and diverse destination. Last month together with representatives from Cruise Whitsundays, Daydream Island Resort, InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, Hamilton Island and Tourism and Events Queensland, Tourism Whitsundays hosted a series of media dinners in London and New York with high circulating, well-known UK and US media outlets. These dinners were part of the Island Recovery funding which was announced earlier this year. With so much new Whitsundays information this was a great opportunity to create some Whitsundays excitement in our key international markets. The media dinners also provided an opportunity to discuss the health of the Great Barrier Reef and the measures we in The Whitsundays are taking to preserve and protect our reef with a presentation given by Daydream Island’s Marine Biologist Johnny Gaskell. We’ve already seen some great publicity outcomes from these dinners, with many more in the pipeline. Already there have been some great publicity outcomes including articles on CNN and Smithsonian Magazine. The team has been working closely with Bowen Tourism and Business, Proserpine Chamber of Commerce and Whitsunday Coast Chamber of Commerce and have recently come up with an exciting opportunity for members of these local business associations. We are pleased to offer members of these groups a complimentary affiliate membership with Tourism Whitsundays. This will give businesses the opportunity to receive business listings on the Tourism Whitsundays website as well as receive the fortnightly Tourism Whitsundays E-news which is packed full of key local information. A reminder to our locals, you are the best ambassadors for our beautiful region, while you’re out enjoying our backyard remember to hashtag #lovewhitsundays #thisisqueensland #seeaustralia. We love being able to share all the amazing wonders on offer in this spectacular part of the world. The new Whitsundays Visitor Centre to be located at Whitsunday Gold Coffee Plantation in Proserpine, is due for completion by the end of the year. A number of factors contributed to this location choice including the need for a caravan turning circle, highway visibility and research has shown that visitor information centres are more successful when connected to an attraction. This location certainly meets all the criteria. We can’t wait to get the new centre opened, if you’d like to volunteer or you’d like your business brochure displayed in the centre please contact the Tourism Whitsundays team. Before I finish up, I would like to give a very special heart-felt thank you to outgoing Tourism Whitsundays Chairman Al Grundy. Al’s tireless commitment and dedication to the destination has seen us achieve some great results during his time as chair, he’s been a steady hand at the helm, the team and I are very grateful to have had his mentorship and guidance over the past few years.

FKG GROUP T

he future is bright for local suppliers and subcontractors as illustrated at a networking event held at Mackay’s Harrup Park last August. FKG Group showcased a broad range of opportunities relating to local construction and engineering projects, following a growth surge for the award-winning Queensland-owned construction and engineering company. More than 100 local subcontractors and suppliers enjoyed an informative and welcoming evening, to learn about future opportunities on the back of FKG Group’s current projects throughout Central Queensland. Bolstered by an experienced team of engineers, site supervisors, builders and support staff; FKG Group have already left a substantial mark on the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions. You only need to look at the impressive portfolio and award-winning projects to see how they are shaping the landscape of our towns. Projects delivered locally, only to name a few,

include; Mackay Northern Beaches Performing Arts Centre, Moranbah Resource Recovery Centre, Whitsunday Foodservice Facility, IMS Mackay, Mirani State High School Indoor Sports Facility, Emerald Aquatic Centre and QUT Biocommodities Building. North Queensland Operations Manager, Brad Gardner, said that the evening was to highlight the opportunities to local businesses on the horizon as well as provide the opportunity for many of Mackay’s local suppliers and subcontractors to meet and network. “Helping grow and support local communities is at the heart of everything we do,” Mr Gardner said. “We understand the benefits of sourcing local suppliers and subcontractors to capitalise on their local knowledge and insight, whilst creating new jobs and opportunities within the Central Queensland region.”

Holcim Central Queensland North Account Manager, Hamish Wright, said the evening was a great way to meet the FKG Group family and other suppliers within the region. “The networking event provided an exciting opportunity to build and reinforce working relationships within the local construction industry. We are excited to be working with FKG Group on key projects for the region, helping to grow business for the Mackay and Central Queensland areas,” Mr Wright commented. “FKG Group is dedicated to engaging local subcontractors to the fullest extent possible, investing in the local economy through purchasing locally made products and materials and providing workplace experience for cadets. We look forward to continuing to expand our business and employ more locals in our offices in Mackay and Central Queensland,” Mr Gardner added.

At the recent Mackay and Whitsunday Master Builder’s awards, two of FKG Group’s buildings won their respective categories. The expansive Whitsunday Foodservice Facility project received the winning award in the category of ‘Industrial Building up to $5M’ and the Mackay Northern Beaches State High School Performing Arts Centre was the winning project in the ‘Education Facilities over $10M’ category.

industry is something FKG Group are aware of and are actively initiating procedures to help their colleagues.

It’s not only on the surface of the land where FKG Group is having an impact on our communities. Becoming entrenched in the lifestyle and getting to know the locals is a big part of FKG Group delivering communityenriching facilities. Because their team live locally, it’s important to them to give back to the organisations helping the local community. The Core Life team first met FKG Group at the Tuf Minds Gala, a local fundraising initiative raising money to build mental resilience in an effort to reduce suicide. Mr Gardner talked about how the issue of mental health in the construction

Last summer during some of the worst drought we’d seen in Central Queensland, Mr Gardner arranged for 42 Tonnes of hay to be delivered from the family farm in the Darling Downs to rural properties in Clermont.

“The FKG Group is passionate about mental health due to the high rates of suicide in the construction industry. We’re an organisation that aims to do what we can to build the mental resilience of our team,” he said.

FKG Group had recently finished a roading project in the Isaac area, so it was the business’ way of giving back to the community which had supported their team during the construction and engineering period. The donation reflected FKG Group’s emphasis on growing and supporting the local communities in which it operates.

In Moranbah, FKG Group are proud supporters of the Moranbah Bears AFL and Moranbah Race Club. It supported a number of Isaac regional events, including the Moranbah to Mackay Ride for MND, the Middlemount Rodeo and the 4U2 Concert in Moranbah. As well as the charity support already mentioned, FKG Group generously sponsors a number of community organisations and events, such as the Masters Women’s Hockey tournament in June, the Saints Netball Mackay Awards Night and last month it became the naming rights sponsor for the Mackay Cycling Club Track Carnival. It’s capacity to deliver beyond expectation is what drives FKG Group from one project to the next, but its compassion for community is what makes it a truly special construction and civil engineering group. ‘MAINE’ EVENT THE STORY BEHIND THE LOCAL MACKAY COMPANY WHOSE INNOVATION AND HARD WORK IS CHANGING THE FACE OF MINING EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY

MODERN DAY The innovators behind Mainetec might have their eyes set on the future, but their feet are still planted firmly on the ground. As a specialised OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), Mainetec provide solutions through engineering and fabrication.

Soon to celebrate their 10th anniversary, Mainetec was founded in 2010 by Brett Hampson with a vision to bring innovation to the resources sector. He was joined by Stephen Mounsey in 2011, with the third Director Dan Sanderson joining the team in 2014. All three are still leading Mainetec today, a testament to the fantastic ethos behind the company and their forward-thinking philosophy. Chief Financial Officer, Vicky Bowden, joined the Mainetec team in 2014 after a decade working in the mining sector. As the head of all financial and commercial aspects to the business, Vicky also works hand in hand with recently appointed Executive General Manager – Mick Gamble. One of the original founders of G&S Engineering, Mick’s experience working for large OEM’s across mining and engineering is a huge asset to the business.

If you’re open to thinking differently through innovation, experience and world-class technology, let Mainetec take your business to the next level.

The team at Mainetec hail from all walks of life, each bringing unique experience to the company. With trade backgrounds and extensive experience across the areas of heavy moving equipment, wear parts, mechanical fitting, machining and boilermaking just to name a few, the people behind the business are truly innovative thinkers. With this ‘out of the box’ mindset comes a real passion for the design and manufacture of customised products. This includes systems and components to suit mining equipment, covering anything from draglines, electric rope shovels and excavators, through to their hugely successful and in-demand HULK bucket, released in 2019 (more on that later)… What sets Mainetec apart? To put it simply, Mainetec are different. Their approach to business considers a long-term perspective, in that they truly value the relationship and opportunity to work with clients over

the course of a project and beyond, to ensure it is not only fit for purpose but delivers on its goals. Mainetec are equipped to support the asset cycle from start to finish, resulting in increased productivity, reduced downtime, reduced risk, and improved machine life. Not only do Mainetec cater to the wider Mackay region, their products can be seen as far away as Perth to Pilbara and the Hunter valley to the USA – a phenomenal achievement for a locally owned company. Whilst the team are always looking at the best in industry standards, they certainly don’t forget to give back to the local community. This comes in the form of regular sponsorship and involvement in sporting groups and various charity events, such as Run for Mi Life, Variety Bash Queensland and the Crossley Cup. Mainetec also supports local employment through an annual apprentice intake, work experience and training programs.

HULK EXCAVATOR BUCKET RANGE “MORE DIRT...LESS STEEL Mainetec knows that innovation is key to the future of mining and their business, which is why safety and cost-effectiveness are high in their considerations.

To commemorate 10 years in business, Mainetec released the HULK Bucket range – an innovative product making waves in the earth-moving industry. Over three years of design, testing and engineering went into this highly anticipated bucket, released to market in 2019. www.corelife.com.au 76 76 www.corelife.com.au

This is the HULK Bucket philosophy. Mainetec set out to challenge the typical design of buckets, through reducing the B.E.R Steel Vs Payload (an enhanced Linerless design similar to dragline buckets).

Meet Nadene & SOZO Advanced relief from Lymphoedema

W

hen you’re already coping with cancer, Lymphoedema is an unwanted sideeffect which can arise after surgery or radiation therapy. It causes uncomfortable swelling in certain parts of the body and women who have undergone surgery and radiotherapy for treatment of breast cancer are particularly susceptible. A local remedial massage therapist has introduced high-tech equipment to the Whitsundays, which helps to detect and treat Lymphoedema earlier than traditional methods. Nadene Allan’s passion extends from a desire to improve the quality of life for those who are living with the side-effects of cancer treatment. The specialist equipment is called SOZO Bioimpedance Spectroscopy. It measures fluid and composition of the body tissues, and can determine if there are sub-clinical signs of fluid accumulation in the affected limbs after cancer surgery or radiation.

Nadene explains further, “Bio Impedance LDEX monitoring is a crucial part of monitoring cancer patients for early detection of subclinical signs of Lymphoedema. This allows patients to engage in early intervention strategies for ensuring successful management or prevention of chronic long-term swelling.” The aim of treatment is to improve the flow of lymph fluid through the affected area, to help reduce swelling. Reducing the swelling can lower the risk of infection, make movement easier and more comfortable, and improve wellbeing; which is Nadene’s ultimate goal. “The treatment encourages physical relief while patients develop a positive and proactive mindset. This helps them reconnect with themselves in a healthy loving and kind way,” Nadene said. The SOZO has already been in action here in the Whitsundays with cancer patients who wish to prevent Lymphoedema, and patients who have a

diagnosed lymphoedema that requires ongoing management. Nadene added, “These patients have the benefits of seeing objective results of their therapy as LDEX score is displayed in a visual graph and help to track the results of their treatment plan.” 2020 will see a Lymphoedema Screening drive with the SOZO device brought to locations in remote Queensland areas; such as Emerald, Longreach, Mount Isa and other rural communities. Not only can the SOZO be used for Lymphoedema, it is intended for a variety of applications; including clinical use, personal training programs, weight loss therapy and body transformation programs. The Body composition analysis helps people to see the results of their fitness by being able track fat mass changes, skeletal muscle mass, BMI, basal metabolic rate and a range of other fluid metrics.

My Chemo Buddy

Curve Ball

W

hen I was diagnosed with stage 3 Bowel Cancer three months ago my first instinct was to either hide away or run away. I didn’t want to face people, to see the pity in their eyes or hear the sympathy in their voice. I felt trapped and alone, despite being surrounded by many amazingly supportive people that love me. I found it difficult to be the ‘ill person’ because until that moment I had always been the strong one, both physically and mentally. I also felt irrationally ashamed of my disease, like I was incomplete or tarnished. I no longer belonged with the ‘normal’ healthy people of society.

Then, as the initial shock subsided and the word ‘cancer’ became part of everyday life, I realised that I had a choice. Instead of hiding or running away I could share my story and become part of the conversation. Through my own small journey, I could help release the taboos and talk candidly and openly about cancer so that others could understand a bit more about what it’s like. One night I received a message from Tim O’Berg and Rowena Kissun. These two inspirational, kind-hearted human beings had connected through one of Rowena’s blogs and wanted to introduce me to someone. This person is Matt Baines, who, as I was

shocked to discover, had been diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer just one week before me! Not only were we roughly the same age, with young children and the same chemo journey ahead of us, we also lived just a few kilometres away from each other! It was such a relief to hear that I was not alone (not that I would wish cancer on anybody) but the fact Matt and I could, in many ways share this journey and help each other was so incredibly comforting. Matt and I instantly related to each other’s journeys and have since become good friends. He started chemo a week before I did so we support each other through each other’s challenging weeks. The chemo journey, as you can expect is an emotional and physical battle. Every three weeks we go to Mackay for an intravenous drip of chemo which slowly runs through our veins. Every person is different, but for me, the first four days are the worst. Imagine the most brutal hangover of your life combined with unrelenting sea-sickness and the intense desire to get out of your own body. There is nothing you can do but sit and wait for it to pass. From the day of the intravenous chemo, I also take 8 chemo tablets each day for 14

Rowena Kissun, Rachael Smith and Matt Baines

days. These leave me dizzy and detached but otherwise able to function normally which is a relief. I finish the tablets one week before my next round of chemo begins and I consider this the ‘sweet spot’, a small window of reality. As many of you know, I am following an integrative medical plan with Rowena Kissun from Kissun Clinics. In addition to the chemo, I take a powder in my smoothie each morning which helps reinforce my gut lining that has become weakened by the chemo. I also take a tonic containing concentrated turmeric and other natural ingredients and zinc to reduce the metallic taste in my mouth. I combine this with a largely sugar, dairy and carbohydrate free diet and have found, to my surprise, I can live a relatively normal life. I work full-time in a job I love, I tickle my son until he giggles and I laugh with friends over dinner. As I write this I have six more treatments to go, I am quarter of the way through and although this feels like a long journey ahead, I am so grateful that it was treatable. I am one of the lucky ones. If you would like to hear more regular updates of my chemo journey you can follow my Facebook blog – My Cancer Curve Ball. www.corelife.com.au 83

TV up too loud? 7 signs of hearing loss you can’t miss. Who is the first to notice hearing loss? Usually it is not the person with the actual hearing loss. In many of the cases I see, it was the patient’s partner or family that first noticed that the patient was starting to suffer from hearing loss. Usually it was because of one or a few reasons from the following list. The TV is up too loud: This is a common complaint from partners and family. Over time the volume on the TV has crept up until it finally became too loud for other people in the room. Not hearing young children or women’s voices: As our hearing worsens it is often the high pitches that we lose the ability to hear first. This corresponds to the pitches of children’s and some women’s voices making them more difficult to hear. That’s why I often hear patients say that they don’t have a hearing issue, cause they can hear their friends no problem... it’s just their partner that has started to talk more softly! Not following the conversation in noise places: While this can be a struggle for many people, listening to conversation in noisy places can become more and more difficult

with certain types of hearing loss. So if you or someone you care about, appear to “tune” out of conversations in these types of places, like cafés or restaurants, perhaps it’s a sign that hearing loss is at play. This issue can also cause the person with hearing loss to become annoyed or frustrated during the conversation. It can take a lot of effort to listen properly so sometimes trying to listen in these environments can cause fatigue and irritation. Asking people to repeat themselves or speak up repetitively: This is a sure sign that something isn’t quite right in the hearing department. If other people in the same environment have no issues hearing the conversation, its a sign that perhaps it’s time to get a hearing check. Not hearing the doorbell, alarms, bird song: Like the issue with children’s and women’s voices not hearing things like bird song or doorbells is usually because these sounds fall in the upper register of pitch as well. So if you have lost some ability to hear those higher frequencies you may be missing out on a lot more. Misunderstanding people... a lot: We all mishear or misunderstand things on

occassion. But if it’s becoming the norm rather than an occassional occurance, it’s time to get your hearing checked. Having trouble hearing on the telephone: If you have trouble hearing on the phone and the volume is up as far as it will go, there might be cause for concern. These days there is no reason to struggle with hearing loss. There a many solutions available these days. The thing to remember is that it’s always best to treat hearing loss the moment it’s noticed. With A Salty Dog Sea Kayaking Tour When you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. While many of us aspire to make this mantra a reality, few people actually do. But this is exactly what local Whitsunday tourism business owners, Hayley and Neill Kennedy have managed to do. After successful careers in business, banking and hospitality; they, like many people, found themselves were at one of life’s crossroads and asked themselves ‘What do we really enjoy doing that could work as a business?’ “We understood that there had to be more to life than working office jobs,” says Hayley Kennedy. 88 www.corelife.com.au

The establishment of Salty Dog Sea Kayaking was the ultimate answer to this question. “After exploring options up and down the Queensland coast, we had our heart set on living and working in the Whitsundays” said Hayley. “Shute Harbour, with its easy access to the nearby islands and coral reefs was the logical location to set up our base,” she added. The couple started operating tours in 1997 when commercial sea kayaking in Australia was in its infancy. At that period, Airlie Beach was known mainly as a sailing and diving destination for backpackers.

Salty Dog Sea Kayaking has since established itself as one of the premium sea kayaking businesses in Australia offering a variety of short tours and extended overnight kayaking expeditions as well as kayak rental. According to Hayley, much of the credit of their success is attributable to local tour agents and accommodation providers, who have supported and promoted the business over the years. Credit also goes to their local and overseas kayaking guides who bring their own unique skills and experiences to share with clients. Thanks also has to go the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service who in the early days, after much

lobbying and behind the scenes work, agreed to re-establish camping in the Whitsunday Islands. This coupled with the establishment of worldclass hiking trails and lookouts throughout the islands cemented the Whitsundays as a ‘must-do’ experience for kayakers around the world. Salty Dog Sea Kayaking works closely with the local camper drop-off service whose unique fast landing craft style vessel “Scamper” takes campers and kayakers to and from the various campsites. The Kennedy’s have truly made the Whitsundays home. Their two sons were born and raised in the

Whitsundays and both helped out in the business during school holidays during their teenage years. Salty Dog Sea Kayaking continues give back to the community by supporting community organisations and events; including the Reef Festival, Logan’s Playground, VMR, Airlie Beach Music Festival, school fundraisers and local sporting clubs. Salty Dog’s 20th Birthday celebration was dampened somewhat by the arrival of Cyclone Debbie. “The Whitsundays in general and our base at Shute Harbour in particular took a hammering.

Fortunately, thanks to the help from friends, neighbours and business associates we managed to continue running the business,” says Hayley. “The support of the Whitsunday Regional Council and Mayor Andrew Willcox in particular over this period was key to staying in business over this difficult period. With the upcoming redevelopment of Shute Harbour imminent, we are excited about the future and have plans to expand.” For a different way to see the Whitsundays, visit saltydog.com.au and check out the range of sea kayaking options available. www.corelife.com.au 89

Welcome to our house

WAKEHOUSE! What do you get when you fuse together two of Mackay’s premier water sport attractions? Serious summer fun! Amanda Pelagalli and Daniel Probert took over ownership of the wake park at Andergrove Lakes earlier this year, one of only eight in Australia! The rebranded Wake House Australia combines Aqua Park Mackay with the popular cable wake park as well as the new Lakeside Café and Sunset Bar; creating the ultimate destination to eat, sleep, wake and play! You wouldn’t believe it, Dan and Amanda met on the dock of the wake park five years ago, when Dan moved to Mackay to help the previous owner establish the cable ski park. As a teenager, Dan skipped school one day to ride at

What’s on at Wake House? “We have just kicked off Friday Sun. Sets where we keep the Sunset Bar open till late for dinner with live music every Friday during the summer. We also have Aqua Park Sessions every Saturday and Sunday at 10am and 11am. Never wakeboarded before? No worries! There are beginner’s classes for teens and adults as well as a ladies-only class. 6 to 12-year-olds are catered for in Grom Squad classes. With expert coaches, there’s nothing stopping you from learning this awesome watersport.

the wake park on the Sunshine Coast and that’s where it all started. Dan worked over the years at the park whilst completing an apprenticeship as a stonemason and a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science. Dan brings the cable park expertise while Amanda brings extensive marketing and business management experience to deliver the good vibes. “Wake-boarding is a very popular sport in Europe and after visiting some of the coolest and largest parks in Germany and Italy, we knew exactly what we wanted to do in Mackay to re-create our version of that,” Dan said. After a couple of months closure for renovations the park now includes two new wakeboarding features, the first of their kind in Australia.

Jacob Vinall

(Pictured in action above) Jacob is an Australian wakeboarder, sponsored by Rip Curl Australia and DUP wakeboards! Jacob’s been riding since the age of 14 and filming since before he can remember. When he was 18 years old, he took off to the Philippines to work for the Governor of Camarines Sur Philippines at one of the most renown cable ski parks in the world. Passionate about the culture and lifestyle of wakeboarding, Jacob travelled for

“They are monumental at over 22metres long and were made by the team at Shape Obstacles in Austria. The features were designed by international pro riders Sam de Haan and Red Bull rider Dom Hernler. Sam even flew in from the Netherlands to christen his feature rail! It was great to have him here and we hope to see more pro riders arrive during the summer to hang out,” Amanda said. The couple also launched Lakeside Café and Sunset Bar, open daily from 7am until sunset. It’s fully licensed and provides a relaxed spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner; featuring mouthwatering favourites like Dan’s 12-hour slow cooked beef brisket nachos and tacos.

3 months around America in 2016 to capture on video the different riders, their environments and life stories; coming out with the full-length movie, Unplanned America. “To say we are lucky to have Jacob at the park in Mackay this summer is an understatement. Make the most of it, who knows where he will end up next.” - Amanda Pelagalli

x i n e o h P e h t t a s t Festive feas ‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE MERRY, LET THE PHOENIX ENSURE YOUR FOOD IS FESTIVE.

Honey prawns, sweet and sour pork, Massaman curry duck and salt and pepper calamari. These are just some of the fan favourites that makes Tropical Phoenix Garden Restaurant the ideal place to celebrate this festive season.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT - PAD THAI Huge king prawns or tender chunks of chicken, tender rice noodle fettuccine, egg, bean sprouts, chili, seasonal vegetables, a wedge of lime and crunchy peanuts. The salty, spicy, sweet and sour flavours of the dish help to excite the taste buds. Pad Thai is a fan favourite, loved in western culture. While it is eaten widely in Thailand, it’s not historically a dish of Thailand. Interesting fact - Former prime minister of Thailand, Plaek Phibunsongkhram, is credited with making pad Thai his country’s national dish. He was committed to establishing a national identity

www.corelife.com.au 92 92 www.corelife.com.au

to unite the nation through culture in the 1930s. The campaign included changing the country’s name, commissioning a new national anthem, and creating a national dish – pad Thai. From intimate family get-togethers to epic office celebrations, Tropical Phoenix Garden Restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy a hearty feast; filling for the tummy but light on your wallet! Banquet options are very affordable making it an ideal place to celebrate as a group. Starting from less than $30 per person, a famous Phoenix banquet is the ideal choice for festive celebrations. These banquets can be tailored to suit every taste, simply let the restaurant know which dishes you would like to swap out and they will give you a price per-person based on your chosen selection. Functions are a specialty with the ability to sit 50 people indoors, and an additional 40 people outside. A new air conditioner indoors assures year-round climate comfort. As well as banquets, the dinner menu is extensive. Authentic delicacies made with fine-dining techniques and fastidious attention to detail, these special recipes are refined with academic knowledge of traditional cuisine.

DID YOU KNOW? Most of the menu at Tropical Phoenix is gluten free! The sauces have been specially curated using gluten free ingredients. Even the noodles are gluten free because they are made from rice! So, you can enjoy your favourite pad Thai or Singapore noodles without worrying about allergies. Centrally located in the Rivage complex, beside the Bluewater Lagoon, the restaurant is open seven days per week for lunch and dinner, with indoor (air-conditioned) and outdoor dining options. Classic favourites are executed to perfection; pad Thai, Singapore noodles, honey king prawns and cashew chicken, but you will also be treated to authentic specialties; chili basil beef or roast duck hot pot. If you like it hot, try the jungle curry for

a spice explosion, or if chilli is not your friend, the sweetly fragrant Massaman beef curry with crunchy peanuts is a tasty choice. The special fried rice is a local favourite as are some of the munchable entrees, including satay chicken skewers and san choy bow.

DID YOU KNOW? Tropical Phoenix offer a range of vegetarian and vegan options. Because our meals are cooked fresh-to-order, we can adapt many meals to suit individual requirements. A wide range of cocktails, beer, wine and spirits are available to complete the celebration. Of course, the festive season is also about kicking back, relaxing and enjoying time at home. John Williamson says the Whitsundays is “a part of the world everyone should visit at least once”. The ‘True Blue’ Australian icon has been wanting to perform at the Airlie Beach Festival of Music for several years, and now, finally, the timing has matched up. “I’ve heard from many friends in the industry what a special and intimate event it is, so to have the opportunity to perform, surrounded by 74 islands on the Great Barrier Reef, will be a bucket list moment for me,” he said. John Butler is another of the festival’s 74 acts who is looking forward to experiencing “the vibe” of Airlie Beach and connecting with the community at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. “For me the most important thing is connection with the audience; I remember that more than anything else to be honest, so I hope the audience wanna bring their ‘A- game’ like I do,” he said. Festival founder, Gavin Butlin, said along with these two renowned musicians, the line-up over November 8-10 was guaranteed to impress.

“We’ve got Smokie from the UK kicking off a national tour at the festival on Sunday, November 10, and I can already picture the reaction from the crowd when they play their signature song ‘Living Next Door to Alice’,” he said.

Before the music from these headline acts kicks off in the main tent each day, the town of Airlie Beach will be reverberating to the sounds of other well-known and emerging acts, playing throughout the festival’s additional 17 venues.

“With members from Powderfinger, Spiderbait, Jet and You Am I, the Australian Rock Collective are going to be a real ‘supergroup’, bringing us songs from their respective collections as well as other hits we all know and love.

The main tent is open to Under 18’s for one morning only on Saturday, November 9, when the younger generation can be introduced to music from the likes of Australia’s Got Talent stars, George and Noriko, and Byron Bay’s Juzzie Smith.

“We’ve also got Yothu Yindi, The Superjesus, Mahalia Barnes, and Bon But Not Forgotten – which is as close as you can get to AC/DC in the 70’s. “There’s Tia Gostelow, Stars, The Pierce Brothers, George and Noriko, Spy Vs Spy Skyhooks, Racey, and our very own Airlie Beach ‘All Stars’ Nicky Bomba, Bustamento, Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde.

Ticket holders have access to all venues, but without a wrist-band cover charges apply. Single or three-day passes are required to access the main tent. Tickets to the festival are on sale via OzTix, BigTix, Whitsunday Tickets, The MECC, Tourism Whitsundays, and direct from www. airliebeachfestivalofmusic.com.au. For more information, follow the festival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“Best of all, these major acts play right on the water’s edge at the Whitsunday Sailing Club. “Most other festivals are a stage in a paddock, but this is a party in paradise.”

Both the Australian Supermoto and Junior Road Racing Championships are being held in Proserpine, with presentations and celebrations being held at Mantra’s Club Croc at the conclusion of the competition. The final round will be huge, I encourage all riders, spectators, and lovers of motorsports to get behind the riders and pump up the atmosphere. “Whitsunday Raceway is one of the few tracks in Queensland that was purpose built for karts and motorcycles.
