hat started as a men’s entertainment magazine for miners in the Coalfields has evolved into a mainstay of media in the greater Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions. Now celebrating a decade of delivering compelling community stories, Founder Rebecca Douthwaite finds it humbling that the concept came together over a bowl of tikka masala.

real get together,” Jody recalled.

Early 2011 – Masala Indian Mackay

September 2011 Core Magazine’s first edition

“I remember the ideas flowing as freely as the wine and the conversations were filled with laughter.” Rebecca Douthwaite invited business owner of redhotblue, Jody Euler, out for dinner. “Bec and I had worked together for many years through her business ASAP – as redhotblue’s preferred sign writing company. We’d spoken so many times on the phone and via emails but never 10 www.corelife.com.au really caught up, so dinner that night was our first

It was the start of something big, not only in business, but a friendship also flourished. The ladies knew there was a market and the idea of establishing a high-quality glossy magazine for the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac regions was something they both felt very passionate about.

Few will appreciate the work that went on behind the scenes to launch Core. Rebecca would drive from her home in the Whitsundays to Mackay several nights a week after work so her and Jody could work through content, articles and plan photo shoots and editorial. For the first three months the redhotblue team would pull up stumps at 5pm from their daytime job

and then commence working on the page layouts, sometimes working through until midnight. “I’m not sure how we did it, but we were all invested in delivering a publication that was first class,” Jody said. Many will recall the racy content of Core’s initial first few issues. Rebecca and Jody wanted it to be a lifestyle magazine from inception, but Rebecca’s longstanding publishing history meant she couldn’t compete with the million-dollar-business she had sold in 2006 to APN. After they launched Core Magazine as a men’s magazine, they discovered Rebecca’s old publication, City Life, had stopped printing, which allowed them to transition into a community and lifestyle magazine. The fresh focus first landed on the doorsteps of locals in December 2012 where it was immediately embraced.

PROUD SUPPORTERS OF CORE LIFE MAGAZINE

In 2013, as Core’s success had grown, so too did the need to expand the team. It was a juggling act for both Rebecca and Jody who also had their respective businesses ASAP and redhotblue to manage. “In addition to the demands of the businesses, being a Mum to two young girls was at the top of my list and with the growing need to spread myself thin, sadly I had to make the decision to say goodbye to my partnership with Rebecca,” Jody said.

2015 – Core Magazine goes from monthly to bi-monthly The mining downturn had made it tough on local businesses, many of whom were struggling to stay afloat. With the focus always on community, Rebecca made the decision to publish Core Magazine as a bi-monthly publication. This ensured it remained a high-quality read while spreading client’s advertising spend. Many of Rebecca’s clients still thank her to this day for helping them market their business through a tough economic climate in a more affordable way.

2017 – Byron Life Magazine launched A place where the buildings are low and the waves are high, the ambience is chilled and the attitudes are positive. Core Publishing took its popular lifestyle format to the place that’s all about lifestyle, Byron Bay. “Byron Life was well loved by locals, but regrettably after two years in print, it became apparent that our hearts were overwhelmingly in Mackay and the Whitsundays. Without a consistent and reliable presence on the ground, the business had been fun, but wasn’t financially viable.” Rebecca is a strong believer of ‘nothing ventured, nothing gained’.

2020 – Change, digital evolution, mainstream media and pivoting for a pandemic While Core Publishing has faced its fair share of challenges, nothing could have prepared the team for 2020. Undoubtedly, the company’s most challenging year ever.

2015 – Tripping Magazine launched

However, challenge fosters creativity, so the Core Life team got creative.

Diversifying into a different market gave Rebecca the increased sales opportunities to keep her growing team employed during the downturn. Tripping, a tourism magazine covering the North Queensland coast was launched. Covering from Mackay to Cape Tribulation, comprehensively promoting the Whitsundays, Tripping’s distribution included hotel rooms throughout the state as well as airports and ferry terminals, restaurants and other high-traffic areas.

March / April 2020 was the peak of the pandemic for Queensland. It was the time the entire nation was in a collective lockdown; international borders were closed to non-residents and restrictions were first enforced. Many businesses were shut, and Core Magazine’s places of distribution quickly diminished. But not one edition was missed. A digital magazine was launched to engage with readers in a different way and support the businesses who had lost many of their marketing

www.corelife.com.au

platforms. The team worked from home and Zoomed daily, working harder than ever to launch a new-look Core which now continues to deliver a digital platform alongside print. The very next edition, Core Life was back in print. The July / August 2020 edition saw the transformation of the magazine into a flip format, combining both Core Life and Tripping into one magazine. Core Life now had a larger distribution pushing further north into Tripping markets, enabling the business to remain viable during the ongoing pandemic. July 2020 also saw the publishing company break into mainstream media, with the creation of a free weekly newspaper, Mackay and Whitsunday Life. “It was immediately apparent that a number of local business and community groups would suffer from not having a regular chronicle of our region in print,” Rebecca said. “I’ve always believed that print is alive and well in our region, it just needed a refresh.” Rebecca said she is grateful for all the people the past decade in business has brought into her world. “My team, who are like family, clients, suppliers and of course the people who keep the pages turning, the readers. “I still get excited when I see someone reading a copy of Core. I always said the day I don’t, that will be the day I know I’m done. “Given the challenges print media has faced over the past decade, I’m most proud of the fact we’re www.corelife.com.au 11 still here and survived in the industry for so long.”

Where will we find you on the weekend? Spending time with my four-year-old son swimming, laughing and eating treats! Relaxing with my partner and every other weekend enjoying the company of his two children.

Where will we find you on the weekend? When I’m not working, I’m usually travelling for sport; athletics competitions for me or cycling competitions for my husband.

Where will we find you on the weekend? I like to explore our little unknown spots so I can’t tell you.

Most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? When I was in a school play I forgot my long pants so I had to borrow a friend’s that were way too big for me. In the middle of the performance (I was playing a frog) my pants fell down in front of the whole audience! Most memorable moment working for Core Publishing? The first time Bec left me in charge of the magazine when she went away on holiday, and I found myself directing a cover shoot with Norina in a tropical storm. Most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? When I was a pre-teen, I went into a café and ordered three thickshakes for me and my parents while my mum waited in the car. When the shakes were ready, I grabbed all three and went to the door and used my foot to push it forward but it slammed back against me and the shakes exploded all over me! Most memorable moment working for Core Publishing? When we went to Daydream Island for a staff party I fell off a Banana Boat and had to swim back to shore!

Most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? I can’t remember, I’ve wiped them from my memory so that I don’t have to relive them again! Most memorable moment working for Core Publishing? Our Women In Business photo shoot, it was a great bonding moment for everyone and we had so much fun. Sell yourself in six words or less: I can only function with coffee.

Most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? While on a family caravan holiday, I fell off a bunk bed, knocked over a hot kettle of water and fell down in the puddle of boiling water. Where will we find you on the weekend? At home with my partner, probably reading a book. If not there, then playing football (soccer). Most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? I was late for school and decided to iron my shirt while I was wearing it - as anyone could tell you, that’s not a great idea - I managed to flatten a curved burn onto my neck. HAVE YOU BEEN SEEN IN CORE LIFE YET? PERSONALITIES IN BUSINESS What started out as a one-off feature quickly became a regular main stay for the publication, with clients loving the glamour and pizzazz of a personalised photo shoot. “When we first started our Personalities in Business, I knew that people would love the experience of a hair and make-up pampering session followed by a professional photoshoot – the experience is just as important as the outcome,” said Core Life Founder Rebecca Douthwaite. “It’s about making people feel amazing, celebrating who they are, what they do and all the hard work and dedication it has taken them to get there. We then present that in a memorable way and with proven results.” For the last nine years, hundreds of local business owners and key workers have enjoyed this experience – have you done yours yet? “Personalities in Business features have allowed us to show the community not only what we do as a business but who we are as people. Being published in Core lets us into people’s homes and in turn has let people into our world which has created a more personal exchange with our clients. The response has always been so uplifting for us and has broadened our horizons, both personally and professionally.” Meiling Elson – Co-owner of North Queensland Glass.

the Story

T

he best Aussie success stories start with two mates, a few beers and a bit of hard work.

Most people in Mackay would have driven past M&P Service’s massive shed in Paget. As you drive down Farrellys Road it’s hard to miss.

In FREE ding Ladies MaLea 56 y/June de 2018 Business Insi

Rob Taylor from Taylors Property Specialists launched his business and chose to take the front cover of Core Life and he was thrilled with his James Bond style theme – here’s what he had to say:

What you might not know is the evolution that took a small mechanical and panel beating workshop to being one of the region’s leading mining services provider. It’s quite a journey, from mechanical & panel beating repairs, to transport and logistics to manufacturing transportable buildings and mobile crib rooms.

ture Special Fea Club

And like every good yarn worth its salt, there’s a heartwarming beginning, with one of the founders, Max Lamb (Snr) saying he didn’t have ‘two bob to rub together’ when he and a mate went into business.

Sailing Whitsunday s 50 years Celebrate

Cast your mind back to 1986, when Mackay was a sugar town. Max Lamb and Peter Brayshaw (dec) joined forces as a panel beater and a mechanic to create M&P Autos. The M&P stood for Mechanical and Panel Beating, but it was a fitting match also for Max and Peter. Their first shed was located on Archibald Street, and with around $200 in the bank, the men were determined to fill a gap in the market as a comprehensive service provider. Max bought a tilt tray to pick up smashed cars, and saw an opportunity to put their truck to further use and started transporting hire equipment around Mackay for other businesses. “It grew pretty quickly actually,” Max Snr said, and this is what led M&P into transport.

ough. You Are En chained Women Un

“I knew that going on the front cover of Core Life would make a huge statement, and in the real estate business, I knew it would be important to launch that way. Despite this, I have to admit I was out of my comfort zone - but I needn’t have worried - I was in safe hands with the professional team and the concept they chose suited perfectly. I was stopped in the supermarket regularly and told how great the cover was – people thought I was famous!”

Within a year the business expanded to Satellite Cres, where they remained for 14 years. M&P Towing was established in 1988 and then with the mining boom of the early 90’s, they became the preferred transporter for some of Mackay’s most prominent businesses servicing the mining industry. With an ability to adapt and diverse to the market requirements, the businesses landscape is constantly changing.

Max’s son, Max Lamb (Jr) joined the business in 1990 as a truck mechanic under his Dads partner, Peter Brayshaw and became a Director in 1997. One of the company’s major revenue streams was in transporting portable buildings, so it was a risk when they decided to enter the transportable building market themselves. “That came about in the early 2000’s doing a lot of site construction work,” Max Jnr said. “Dad’s forte is looking at how people do things and working out ways to do it better, so we started installing mining camps around the region, 200-person accommodation facilities which were big projects in short timeframes. That resulted in building up a large construction crew travelling around installing portable buildings through Central Queensland. “2005 we started manufacturing our own transportable buildings. Having been involved with transporting and installing them for so long we felt we could bring a better product to the market. Subsequently we lost a big revenue stream as we could no longer transport and install for what became our competitors, so that was a huge risk and change of direction for the business,” Max Jnr said. “We took the leap of faith, and we’re still here.” The business has been better for it. M&P are now one of the largest manufacturer of portable buildings in Central and North Queensland. Their buildings service the needs of a wide array of industry, from mining and agriculture to domestic events & sporting organisations. “We can cater for any market and any requirement” Transportable buildings offer a flexible alternative solution to fixed permanent construction. M&P became a one-stop solution for mining companies where they would only have to raise one purchase order for the design, the supply, the transport and installation. Max Snr summed up M&P’s evolution by saying, “There’s no end to our vision.”

Describe your personality in three words:

Patient, diligent, caring.

Happy, motivating, caring Originally from the midlands in the UK, Natalie moved to Australia four years ago in what she says was one of the most challenging decisions of her life, but something that she’s extremely proud of doing.

Mackay born and bred; Stacey has lived at many beautiful locations on the Great Barrier Reef. Moving from Mackay to Bundaberg at four years old until the age of 20, then she headed upward and outward, living in Emerald, Moranbah, Cairns, back down to Brisbane, and even Thursday Island on the very tip of Australia.

“I had never left home; this was the first time!”

After she left Mackay, she went through the regular challenges of finding her way in the world, exploring different places and discovering the direction she wished to follow in life.

“It was challenging leaving all my loved ones behind and starting a new, exciting venture here in a new country,” Natalie said. Leaving all her family back home in the UK, she took on an adventure that would lead her to some amazing friends over the past four years in Mackay.

Natalie moved up to Airlie Beach in October - her passion for the ocean, travel, lifestyle and fitness made the Whitsundays a perfect match. As well, it was career drive that led her to a new challenge here in the Whitsundays. She has previously worked with some of the biggest global manufacturers, including GHD doing artistic work, stage work, and London fashion week, but her biggest achievement was working for Wella Professionals as a technical colour educator where she was an expert in all things colour.

Now at Adam and Eve in Cannonvale, she gets to enjoy all aspects of hair dressing, but particularly loves blonde hair and is the blonde specialist in the salon. Although she loves blonde, Natalie says the only thing missing from her new home in Airlie is a pup, preferably a Labrador, and she doesn’t mind if they’re blonde, black, or chocolate brown. 18 www.corelife.com.au

After a few years of soul searching and moving from place to place, it was in 2011 that Stacey knew she had found the very best place she’d seen. She finally settled down in Airlie Beach, where her work experience in the administration field led her to her current role with Villa Botanica as the resident jack of all trades. Working in office and administration, HR and accounts payable and receivable, as well as assisting in the marketing department, Stacey loves her role at one of Airlie’s best wedding venues which has a reputation for its unique Balinese-style ultimate waterfront location. Always kept busy at Villa Botanica, Stacey is a big fan of her quiet time when at home and enjoys spending time with her husband of eight years, as well as heading out on the water, boating and fishing in Whitsundays when she can. She says that the best thing that ever happened in her life was marrying her husband, whom she now shares a beautiful home with and their adorable fur baby Zoe – an eight-year-old, Kelpie-Staffie cross.

In 2016, the company was led to a contract in the Bowen basin, and it was from these roots that Jackson’s company SnapSolar was born. hristmas feasts at Tropical Phoenix are becoming a festive tradition for many families. But unlike the big city buffets that come with a hefty price tag often in the hundreds of dollars per person, Tropical Phoenix prides itself on affordable banquets that won’t break the bank. Importantly, these banquets can be tailored to suit every taste. Simply let the restaurant know which dishes you would like to swap out and they will give you a price per-person based on your chosen selection. As well as banquets, the dinner menu is extensive. Authentic delicacies made with fine-dining techniques and fastidious attention to detail, these special recipes are refined with academic knowledge of traditional cuisine. HEAD CHEF KEN LUO

Ken grew up in China’s southern Canton region, a climate not dissimilar to our own tropical paradise here in Mackay. When he moved to Australia, he worked for one of Sydney’s top Asian restaurants in Chinatown. Showcasing the best flavour from the Orient, the eatery was awarded a prestigious Chef Hat. Ken was one of seven chefs from Australia selected to go to the United States of America to learn American techniques for Asian cuisine. Although he enjoyed the cosmopolitan cuisine of Sydney, Ken fell in love with Mackay and the Whitsundays while on holiday. He brought his Cantonese flair to the Sugar City and Tropical Phoenix rose to success. Ken loves to bring a fusion of different flavours to the menu. Cantonese cuisine is redolent with colour, fragrance, taste and presentation; Ken prepares dishes from North, South, East and West. “There are eight famous cuisines of China, each with a lot of differences,” Ken said. “As well we showcase techniques from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The dishes are created for the Western palate.”

TREAT YOUR TEAM TO A TASTY NIGHT OUT

BUSINESS PROFILE

Functions are a speciality with the ability to sit 50 people indoors, and an additional 40 people outside. Groups of more than 100 can also be accommodated – please phone the restaurant to find out how. Air conditioning indoors assures year-round climate comfort. Classic favourites are executed to perfection; pad Thai, Singapore noodles, honey king prawns and cashew chicken, but you will also be treated to authentic specialties; chili basil beef or roast duck hot pot. If you like it hot, try the jungle curry for a spice explosion, or if chilli is not your friend, the sweetly fragrant Massaman beef curry with crunchy peanuts is a tasty choice. The special fried rice is a local favourite as are some of the munchable entrees, including satay chicken skewers and san choy bow. A wide range of cocktails, beer, wine and spirits are available to complete the celebration. Centrally located in the Rivage complex, beside the Bluewater Lagoon, the restaurant is open seven days per week for lunch and dinner.

Did you know? Most of the menu at Tropical Phoenix is gluten free! The sauces have been specially curated using gluten free ingredients. Even the noodles are gluten free because they are made from rice! So, you can enjoy your favourite pad Thai or Singapore noodles without worrying about allergies.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT MASSAMAN CURRY It wouldn’t be a fusion of Asia without the creamy comfort curry, massaman. It’s a rich and relatively mild curry. Ingredients popular among Muslim traders from Persia, the Indian subcontinent, and the Malay Archipelago were brought to Thailand and combined with ingredients more commonly used in native Thai cuisine to make massaman curry paste. The dish’s origin is rumoured to have come from Malaysia, but it’s been an important part of Thai cuisine since the 17th century and was popular with royalty. The massaman at Tropical Phoenix is a fan favourite. Served with potato and onion, simply choose your protein to be smothered in the creamy curry sauce, from prawns and duck to beef and chicken. Of course, the festive season is also about kicking back, relaxing and enjoying time at home. Grab some takeaway during lunch or dinner to feed your tribe, or let Tropical Phoenix deliver to your door. Find them on your favourite home delivery app or visit their Facebook page for updates and specials.

Looking Back On

Amanda Camm’s

First Year F

ollowing one of the tightest campaign races in recent local government history, Amanda Camm was voted in as State Member for the Whitsundays last November and, just over 12 months on, she has proved her mettle by fighting for regional rights on a state government level and proven her compassion by connecting with countless community groups and individuals throughout her electorate. From the Northern Beaches of Mackay to the small Hamlet of Dingo Beach, Amanda travels tirelessly around the region, attending events that span everything from high school musicals to bowls clubs, colour runs to abseiling adventures. Most notably she recently attended the 50th anniversary of the Whitsunday Lions Club where her Great Uncle Ron Camm had the privilege of toasting the inaugural meeting half a century before. “It’s incredible to see how our community, from our youngest right through to our oldest – are just every day out there doing an amazing job and I am so proud to be the local member and spending time with all those groups and to be able to advocate on their behalf and represent them in the Queensland Parliament,” she said.

Coming from truly local stock, the Camm name has been a fixture in Proserpine for generations and with her own family choosing to settle in the Northern Beaches, Amanda represents the depth and breadth of her electorate. Starting out in the non-for-profit sector, she has always followed a career of community service and believes that her role as local member encapsulates that passion. This can be seen through every touching interaction and personal connection she has made over the last year. “It’s important that you are out and that you are accessible, and I think it’s important that people can see who their local member is and that you are a real person and I try to be myself and that’s something that I will continue to uphold throughout the four year term.” Championing individual causes, Amanda has personally assisted local residents in emergency citizenship applications, fast-tracking vital medical procedures and campaigning for compassionate grounds for people to attend loved ones’ funerals when borders were closed over the pandemic. It is these small, often unseen differences that matter most.

On a broader level, Amanda is definitely making her mark in the state government realm, fearlessly campaigning for what she believes in and recently getting kicked-out of parliament for her passionate protest about the maternity ward standards at Mackay Base Hospital. It is these large, public speeches that make our region heard. Shadow Minister for Child Protection and Prevention of Child, Family and Domestic Violence, Amanda’s portfolio represents issues that are close to her heart that she can also relate to through first-hand experience. These roles take her across the country and have seen her meet with countless stakeholders as well as relatives and individuals affected by violence. A mother of three teenagers, Amanda is also juggling the various extra-curricular activities that come with this age group and still finds time to go jogging most mornings. A real person with a real heart, Amanda is an excellent role model for our whole community and an excellent representative for our region. www.corelife.com.au 25

GOODBYE

GEORGE K

nown for his staunch views on many topical issues and his vocal dynamism when sharing his opinion, George Christensen has a reputation for being wildly assertive and is often accused of courting controversy. While some respect this and others berate it – most will agree that he always speaks his mind and never wavers from what he truly believes in.

At just 43 years old, he has been in the political game longer than most.

Whitsundays and I think it has been really badly handled.

“I saw problems in my community, and I wanted not to just have a whinge but make a difference and I think that ultimately while I was a reluctant starter it was the same mentality that made me run for Federal,” he said.

“I do not think that the destruction of the economy, the destruction of freedoms and the destruction of livelihoods has been worth the problem.”

It is this attitude that has seen the Federal Member for Dawson stand up in Canberra and shout loudly for the rights of our region, our industries and our way of life. While others nod and agree, George has always fought for more which has created action for his electorate. From spearheading a new Code of Conduct for the sugar industry which had previously been under the thumb of a multinational company monopoly, to campaigning for a $10 million reinsurance pool which will give every local household the right to affordable insurance, his outspoken views have supported causes that truly matter to the people of Dawson.

Fast forward to 2021 and, after 11 years of dedicated service, George has announced that he will not be running in the next election which is forecast to take place in March next year. Mayor of Whitsunday Regional Council, Andrew Willcox, will be the next LNP candidate.

Starting out as a journalist, George became a local government Councillor for Mackay in 2004, serving for six years before running for Federal Parliament and appointed representative for Dawson in 2010.

“I have completely disagreed with the direction of all political parties on all sides of government over this pandemic, I have seen the destruction that it has caused the tourism industry here in the

“I am finding that the views I have around the direction the country should be heading in are really not the views that are held within the government or even within the opposition and so there comes a time when you look and ask - for the greater good of the country, am I actually getting things done here or am I just finding out what’s wrong?” he said.

“A virus with a fatality rate of 0.27 per cent is not a reason to blow up your economy!” “I can’t be part of it, and I am not going to be part of it so, the option for me was to continue on being the voice in the wilderness saying, ‘wrong way, turn around’, or just saying – I’m out.” With irrevocable differences, George has decided to step away from parliament but will still take an active interest in the political realm. He is also looking to spend time with his one-year-old daughter and is currently completing a degree in Theology. His legacy, however, can be seen in the countless projects he brought to the region and, while outspoken about his beliefs he remains humble about his successes. The true mark of a man who will be remembered for his dedicated service to the region.

LOOKING BACK ON

with Mayor Greg Williamson

A

s the COVID pandemic continues to place pressure on our way of life, leadership in our council and in our community is more critical than ever. The “new normal” for commerce, industry and community will be a continuing challenge. As a council and as a community, we dealt with imposed restrictions and reduced operations, and while this resulted in hard times for some sectors, it did allow council time to pause and reassess. The 2021 Mayor’s Charity Ball was a much-needed night out for the Mackay community following a hiatus on events. Our magnificent team at the MECC delivered a spectacular evening with record attendance and a record amount raised for local charities - DVRS and HeartKids Mackay. As our region has done so often in tough times, we bounced back with gusto. Our construction and manufacturing sectors took advantage of the State and Federal housing incentives and council approved lots went from 368 in the previous year to a whopping 3144.

The Mackay Waterfront Priority Development Area had some stake-in-the-ground moments during the year. An Expression of Interest (EOI) tender process where tenderers were asked to identify potential development opportunities at six key councilowned sites within the Mackay Waterfront area produced two fantastic submissions. The submissions included some excellent ideas that we look forward to exploring in more detail including plans for luxury residential properties, retired living, commercial offices and tourism opportunities across the majority of the councilowned sites listed in the EOI, as well as adjoining privately-owned sites. Another PDA milestone was unlocking Pioneer River views for the first time in more than 100 years with the demolition of 6 River Street. The removal of this building allows for this section of riverfront to be returned to the community. We expect construction of the public realm between Paxtons Warehouse and the Mackay Fish Mackay to begin late 2021. The highly anticipated Pioneer Valley Mountain Bike

Project continued to gain momentum with local area planning framework consultations delivered for both the Finch Hatton and Eungella townships. We delivered a completely subsidised small business mentoring program for 10 businesses in the Pioneer Valley area with great results. Council also engaged with the community to deliver stakeholder input on three proposed concepts for the Finch Hatton trailhead site and we kept the community up to date with regular community consultation sessions. Your elected members are all actively involved in providing the best possible local government for this fantastic region we call home. We will continue to work hard to create opportunities for our region to thrive and do what we can to make the Mackay region, the best region in Australia for liveability and livelihood. From all of us at Mackay Regional Council, we extend the very best wishes to the people of our great community for the Christmas season. LOOKING BACK ON

with Mayor Andrew Willcox

G’day all, 2021 has been another year of challenges globally, nationally and locally and I continue to be proud of our Whitsunday community for playing a role in our region remaining open during the pandemic. We reside in a truly unique part of the world and improving liveability continues to be a strong focus of Council. My Councillors and I believe that providing residents with improved facilities and services will help us achieve our goal of an economically strong and thriving Whitsunday Region community. Council’s relentless advocacy efforts to all levels of government are even more important during such a tough economic period. Major projects completed this year utilising external funding secured include the $65 million Shute Harbour Restoration, $18 million Proserpine Entertainment Centre, $3 million Flagstaff Hill Conference and Cultural Centre and $2 million of NDRRA regional road network repairs.

The Queensland border will fully open from December 17 and our Whitsunday Coast Airport (WCA) is gearing up for a record shattering period with connectivity the key to making it easy for visitors to enjoy the Whitsundays. Weekly flight numbers are soaring with up to 50 flights weekly during November/December and 70 weekly flights in January. There is a perfect synergy with the Whitsundays becoming Australia’s most popular domestic tourism destination and Whitsunday Coast Airport now recognised as one of the country’s fastest growing regional airports. Connectivity is key to making it easy for visitors to enjoy the Whitsundays and we have welcomed new airlines Skytrans and Qantas now flying out of the airport and when borders reopen we will boast direct flights to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns and Rockhampton. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic the airport goal was 500,000 passengers annually but this has now been revised to a target of 750,000 annual passengers if

the world opens up as expected in 2022. To further kick start our region and lead the recovery post pandemic Council released its new community pride & liveability campaign titled Our Whitsunday Way. Through this campaign we aim to showcase the natural beauty and local experiences that make the Whitsundays as the region of choice to visit, live, work and invest. I ask that you, our community, join with us and support this multi-year campaign by spreading the word! Share the Our Whitsunday Way video on your social media, tell your friends and family here and interstate about our campaign and use the #ourwhitsunday when sharing photos of your ‘Whitsunday Way’. A very Merry Christmas to all residents and visitors and please travel safe on our roads this festive season.

LOOKING BACK ON

ISAAC REGIONAL COUNCIL MAYOR ANNE BAKER

T

ogether we have been working hard to keep each other safe as we manage our way through the ever-present pandemic. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Council has played a huge role in reactivating nearly 300 events between July 2020 and June 2021 in the Isaac. As a community, we need to follow health directives to protect our Isaac lifestyle. Real change happens when we come together as a community. This has been even more evident as we stand together, resilient and strong, making our way through a pandemic. More than 2,000 people attended the awardwinning 2021 St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend, producing a 65% increase from the 2019 event and generated $308,523 in economic benefit. This also led to the re-naming of a regional tourism organisation. Mackay Isaac Tourism Ltd changed their consumer business name to include “Isaac” in recognition of the region’s growing tourism profile. It is our work that has gone into developing the Reconciliation Action Plan and our passion that created the Social Sustainability Policy to bring about positive social change to the region. While we reactivate our communities, we are doing everything we can to help improve the lives of our people through the constant and unfailing advocacy for better services to our region that is important.

Our 2020-21 advocacy priorities were regional health services, investment in roads, better funding allocation, and affordable housing. We continue to push for better access to primary healthcare in each of our towns and upgrades to our hospital staffing and services in Clermont, Dysart and Moranbah. Through meetings with the Ministers at both levels of government, state and federal government standing committee submissions and motions to the Australian Local Government Association and Local Government Association Queensland, we are continuing to advocate better health outcomes for our region. Our advocacy on housing affordability has been ongoing, with work carried out to draw attention to the lack of affordable housing across our region. This remains a key component of the social sustainability for our communities in to the future. Government funding for Isaac remains unbalanced and limits the ability of Council to deliver critical projects and infrastructure for our residents. The existing model often forces our communities to forgo the benefits afforded to our metro counterparts. Our advocacy work has been focused on a fairer allocation of funding for our communities. Roads across our region are an ongoing challenge, and without solid investment, our residents will continue to travel on roads that are in dire need of repair or upgrade.

We also said farewell to our CEO of the past five years, Gary Stevenson PSM, after an illustrious 40-year local government career. Gary guided us through significant challenges and milestones, including helping navigate through the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic across our communities. Gary’s farewell has allowed Council to appoint one of our own, former director Jeff Stewart-Harris, to the CEO mantle. Council has every confidence that Jeff will build upon the great work of his predecessor. We had an extremely heartbreaking time with the passing of our dear colleague and friend Councillor Lyn Jones of Clermont. Wherever she went in the Isaac region, her cheeky grin lit up every space. She was a well-respected and valued member of our team and our community and is desperately missed by us all. In closing, thank you to the passionate, dedicated and skillful Councillors and Council staff serving the Isaac region, and our proud, hard-working families and businesses. I am confident our communities will continue to thrive. This resilience is the reason I come to work each day, doing my best to represent the industrious families that are the true backbone of Isaac. That’s why in 2022, the future is brighter in the Isaac region. Anne Baker www.corelife.com.au 33 Mayor Isaac Regional Council

T

he last 12 months have changed the tourism industry in a significant way with ups and downs, lockdowns and border restrictions. Passionate and resilient tourism operators have rallied together in support and Tourism Whitsundays launched marketing campaigns to keep the destination front of mind to both intrastate and interstate visitors.

Airport was launched. Leveraging the Whitsundays Destination Ambassador, Karen Jacobsen the original Aussie voice of SIRI, the campaigns targeted domestic travellers, promoting The Whitsundays as the perfect destination for their next holiday. Together these campaigns generated more than $17 million in bookings for our operators across the region.

The team grew with friendly new faces calling our stunning region home and it was all hands-on deck for the Whitsundays Holiday Dollars campaign. We also bid farewell to some amazing staff members who fiercely advocated for The Whitsundays. It’s safe to say that 2021 packed a punch – but the light at the end of the tunnel isn’t far away and I think it’s a great time to reflect back on some of the wonderful outcomes the team at Tourism Whitsundays achieved over the last 12 months.

In May, Tourism Whitsundays partnered with Tourism and Events Queensland to deliver the Whitsundays Holiday Dollars campaign to encourage Queenslanders to enjoy tours and experiences in the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef. During this period, 4,623 voucher bookings were processed, generating $1.6 million in bookings. The Whitsundays Holiday Dollars saw 42 operators involved in the campaign and an overall consumer satisfaction rate of 94 per cent, and an operator satisfaction rate of 96 per cent. What a campaign and what a huge achievement – congratulations again to all those who were involved in the Whitsundays Holiday Dollars.

At the end of 2020, Tourism Whitsundays launched two major campaigns to support the recovery of The Whitsundays. The Wonders of The Whitsundays $1 million campaign was delivered in partnership with thirteen local operators and Tourism and Events Queensland. In conjunction, a $600,000 Airline Campaign in partnership with Tourism Australia, Tourism and Events Queensland, Hamilton Island Airport and Whitsunday Coast

Looking at the second half of the year, campaigns launched include Wonders Guaranteed, a Skytrans campaign enticing locals from Cairns and Rockhampton to holiday in The Whitsundays and an overnight sailing competition in collaboration

with Pedestrian.TV. I look forward to sharing the outcomes these campaigns will achieve in the new year. It’s been a busy and challenging year and Tourism Whitsundays remains dedicated to showcasing The Whitsundays as the globally recognised Great Barrier Reef destination. We are eagerly excited to welcome back our friends and family from the South in time for the Christmas period. Thank you to everyone in our community who has done their part and rolled up their sleeves to receive their vaccination! If you haven’t already received your vaccination I encourage you to do so as soon as possible, this is our best shot at welcoming holidaymakers back to the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Support local this Christmas and give the gift of priceless memories and experiences by purchasing a Whitsundays gift card via our website: www. tourismwhitsundays.com.au/. From the team and I at Tourism Whitsundays, have a lovely Christmas and News Years break – we look forward to seeing what 2022 has in store for our stunning region. MASTER BUTCHERS WHITSUNDAY

T

his year Master Butchers Whitsunday have further cemented their reputation for quality meats and delicious recipes by bringing home a treasure trove of state awards while further endearing themselves to local customers by remaining fully open with shelves stocked during the pandemic. Excelling both in meeting the needs of their valued customers and representing our region on a state level, owners Karen Rix and Don Cameron are punching well above their weight for independent local butchers. Starting out, 12 years ago, the couples’ dedication to the business and their consistency for delivering top quality meat has enabled them to expand to a total of three retail stores – one in Marian and two in the Whitsundays – as well as a wholesale store which supplies many of our local restaurants. When the supermarket shelves were bare during the height of the pandemic, Master Butchers’ Australian-based suppliers were still delivering and this enabled them to meet the demands of a desperate community who were worried about where they would get fresh meat. “COVID has actually been, in a lot of ways, quite good for butchers around Australia, a lot of people up here were let down by the supermarkets during the first panic buy and we had everything!” Karen said. “Since, then people realised the importance of shopping local again and have enjoyed cooking 36 www.corelife.com.au

quality meat at home.” By being there when everyone needed them most, Master Butchers were able to retain the loyalty of their customers and also win over many new customers who have since become regulars. Those who switched from supermarket meat to Master Butchers haven’t gone back since – the difference was too stark a contrast. “They would come back in after a few days and complement us on the quality of the meat and the taste of it – I think our meat helped a lot of people re-discover the joys of cooking,” Karen said. Part of the reason Master Butchers are so successful is their product range, they continuously fine-tune their high-quality recipes to offer a wide selection of tantalising meaty treats – from award winning sausages to rissoles, chicken creations, delicious home-made burgers and a variety of premade meals for your convenience. This year, they took their meats to the state competition at the Gambaro Hotel in Brisbane, entering all three shops in multiple categories. Claiming a haul of impressive trophies and placements, they continued a history of winning, having taken home the national award in 2015 for Best Continental Sausage in Australia for their Casalinga. The state championships this year saw the Marian

store take home third place for their gourmet burger which is made from lamb, rosemary and cheese. Meanwhile, MBW on the Barbie, located at Whitsunday Shopping Centre, claimed third for their chicken margarita sausage in the poultry section and then secured their biggest achievement by winning the most prestigious prize and being named the Best Beef Sausage in Queensland. “We’re in the top seven in Australia for beef sausage,” Karen said. “We’ve been going in these competitions since 2010 and won at regional and state level every year; we believe in trying to make a good, quality product with a great taste.” Unfortunately, the national championships that were scheduled next year have been cancelled due to COVID, but the couple are looking forward to acing states again next year and reaching for more national acclaim in 2023.

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY A GREAT INVESTMENT

W

hether you are buying or selling a commercial property, the complexity of such a niche investment opportunity is made easier with a specialist real estate agent who understands business and banking as well as real estate. Brett Dwyer from Ray White has all these credentials and more, having worked in the business banking sector for NAB for over 20 years and operated his own commercial ventures, namely the 121 Business Centre in Cannonvale. Branching out into real estate four years ago, Brett has enhanced his knowledge level even further and is quickly becoming known as the ‘go to’ professional for anyone looking to purchase a commercial property. With his finely tuned financial acumen, teamed with his own direct experience in commercial property and extensive real estate knowledge, Brett offers a well-rounded approach to assist both buyers and sellers who are looking to invest. “My experience means that I understand the process better and know what investors are looking for,” said Brett. “The property information memorandum I create is more detailed and properly done – an investor can take it straight to the bank so they can make an informed decision.”

Bringing with him a vast network of contacts, which include off-market sellers and shrewd investors, Brett represents the important link that connects interested parties with the outcomes they desire. With a quick call to Brett, he can place you on his database and then keep you updated when the ideal opportunity presents.

Those looking to sell their commercial property are advised to have a long-term solid lease in-place with established tenants and a ledger that can demonstrate punctual rent payments. It is also important to address any maintenance issues so that the property is primed to sell and offer prospective owners’ confidence in their investment.

With many recent success stories which include the sale of the iconic Prince of Whales Hotel in Proserpine, the Beachworx building which leads onto the Airlie Beach Lagoon and other main street locations, Brett has the ability and the dedication to move quickly and secure the right price for all his clients.

Whether you are buying or selling commercial property, make sure you give Brett a ring and he will be happy to chat about the best options for you.

With interest rates in banks at a low 1%, a commercial property investment provides a much higher return, higher even than a residential investment.

1. M ake sure the tenant has a stable and wellestablished profitable business.

“Lots of people buy investment houses – but I think people should look into commercial property more,” said Brett.

TOP TIPS FOR INVESTING IN COMMERCIAL PROPERTY: 2. C omplete a Building and Pest Inspection - you don’t want any surprises after settlement. 3. R ead the lease - make sure you understand the terms and conditions.

“You can get a return ranging from 6% to 8% in the current market which is incredible.”

4. U se a reliable and well-established commercial property manager to look after your investment.

A brick-and-mortar investment is also considered more secure and can be an excellent addition to your portfolio. It’s especially good for self-managed super funds and savvy investors who are looking for a good return.

5. S eek advice from your financial adviser / accountant about structuring your investment. e: brett.dwyer@raywhite.com m: 0447 583 759 www.corelife.com.au 39

WHAT’S ON YOUR

DREAM BUILD WISH LIST?

esigning your own home from scratch or formulating the plans for the renovations you’ve been dreaming about for years is an exciting time. With endless possibilities, unique ideas, and personal touches, this is a special opportunity to create a living space that encapsulates your personality and enhances your lifestyle. Alongside these creative dreams, however, is the reality of meeting the logistical demands, spatial constraints and budget requirements needed to bring your dream to life. With over 30 years’ experience and ten years operating in the Mackay region, Tony Cook is an expert in drafting and designing almost any building right from the initial sketches of the floor plan to a workable 3D digital illustration. Whether you are a first home buyer on a budget, a family looking to expand or the new owner of an older house that needs a little love, Tony Cook Building Design have the local connections, knowledge, and experience to turn your vision into a practical reality that not only meets your budget but is also packed with value. Simply bring along a ‘wish list’ of your most important inclusions, with clippings of your favourite styles and features, then Tony and his team will do the rest for you.

“Everyone has different tastes and different needs, so it is great to bring along a wish list,” said Tony. “Add everything onto it – the sky is the limit - that way we can pack in as much as possible.” Having spent over a decade in Mackay, there are a wide range of projects that Tony has been involved with and a host of industry connections that he has established over the years by forging a reputation for quality. “One of the best things about Mackay is that everyone knows everyone – you can’t hide!” laughs Tony. “You’ve got to be genuine; you’ve got to be sincere, and you’ve got to produce quality results. In a rural area like this, if you don’t produce quality then you won’t last very long.” One of Tony’s most endearing virtues is his passion for helping people and his deeply caring nature – whether you are building your first home or a $2 million palatial property – everyone gets the same level of service. “Some of the most challenging projects are the most rewarding,” explained Tony. “People with a lower budget - trying to give them the best possible bang for their buck.

“I also love renovating old Queenslanders – it’s like bringing them back to life again – these are beautiful old homes and seeing them restored is incredible. “If you put enough pride into your work, you get a lot back.” With Tony Cook, the process of designing your dream home or planning that renovation is simple and straightforward. The team will work with you to establish your budget for the total build and create the design according to average square metre rates so that there are no shocks when you take the plans to your builder. They will attend your site and create an initial sketch incorporating as many items from your ‘wish list’ as possible. Once this is approved by the client, the 3D preliminary plans with elevations, roof type, facade style and windows will be drafted – upon client’s further approval, the working drawing phase will be completed, including engineering. This will meet all requirements for the Council and can be given straight to the builder. If you are looking for a quality designer that has an excellent reputation and a personal approach, combined with years of experience in the industry – then put your trust in Tony Cook – he will bring your building and renovationwww.corelife.com.au dreams to reality. 43

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP

AVIATION

AGRICULTURE

When Jorson Technologies were approached with a design problem that had been unsolvable to many other engineering companies, they jumped at the opportunity to be the first to find a solution. Helibiz Airlie Beach owns a Huey Helicopter, a popular military aircraft used in the Vietnam War and last produced in the mid 1980s. With many of these no longer in commission and new parts unavailable, it had been impossible for its owners to find a chain cover for the tail rotor anywhere in the world.

When Bowen tomato farmer Luke Jurgens approached Jorson Technologies with a home-made hopper used to spray bugs onto his crops, the team were excited to assist. Using their research and development skills, they modified his design to accommodate a maximum load of a range of hopper sizes from 6, 8, 10 and 12 Litre capacities. Furthermore, the team created a wireless integrated control system to remotely activate and control the speed of the feeding mechanism in the hopper. This exciting new product is entering field testing shortly.

Helibiz provided aviation drawings made to Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) specifications and the team set about building using a high-density plastic on their CNC mill. However, always looking towards innovation, the team offered the client a second option, to 3D print the part on their industrial 3D printer. The outcome was a more cost-effective part that is both stronger, lighter, and could withstand higher temperatures. It was better in every single way and the clients were very happy. 44 www.corelife.com.au

Similarly, when Mahogany Way Farms in Bowen asked for help with a design fault in their ‘Mango Cups’, Jorson was there to find a solution. The cups that hold mangoes on the production line regularly broke, causing the whole factory to stop production. The Jorson engineers looked at the existing product and made it stronger and more cost effective, eliminating the need for the plant to buy a complete assembly for each cup.

T

Drilling down into exactly what Jorson Technologies can do for their clients, 3D Printing Manager Mitch Midalia, says it very simple terms.

Enter the team at Jorson Technologies, a small tech start-up that places itself at the forefront of 3D Printing, specialist design and manufacturing, based right here in Airlie Beach.

“The process starts with the client, typically they will come in with one of three things; a concept, a part to replicate, or a refined design/blueprint. This is followed by a discussion which enables us to better understand the functionality of the part in question, so we can achieve the best result for the client,” said Mr Midalia.

Established two years ago, Jorson has quickly built a reputation as a reliable business for design and manufacturing needs. With access to resources such as advanced computer-aided design software, Solidworks, leading 3D printing machines, CNC machining, and comprehensive fabrication capabilities, Jorson is wellequipped itself to solve almost any problem.

“Once we understand the requirements, we set about designing the part in our CAD software, Solidworks. While designing the part, we can provide clients with updates throughout the design process which gives them a look into every single aspect of the design. Once the final design has been revised and approved by the client, we can start the manufacturing process.

As we all know, tools are only as effective as the proficiency of the person wielding them, however, this is not a limiting factor for Jorson. Its talented team is eager to exercise their engineering mindset to create products and parts that exceed expectations.

This means that should you have the need for a specific component, part for a gearbox or helicopter, or you have an idea you want to bring to life, the team at Jorson Technologies can help

he Whitsunday region is a special place, where sunbathing on beautiful beaches, island hopping, and cooling off at Cedar Creek Falls is commonplace. This is not typically an area one would associate with advanced design and manufacturing technology.

“Oftentimes the problem we’re solving for

our clients is the accessibility to individual components that are a part of a larger assembly. Recently, a local boat chartering business required a small coupling. It was such a small part, and it seemed so silly that they would have to pay thousands for it. After designing the part, we were able to 3D print it for a fraction of the cost with the same functionality.” Said Mr. Midalia. With 3D printing, the team at Jorson can manufacture objects using a range of exotic materials, not just commercial grade plastics that a hobbyist tier 3D Printer would be limited to. The team can use Carbon Fibre, Kevlar, Resin, and a host of other advanced materials to produce parts. But it doesn’t stop there. With their CNC mill, custom manufactured router table, lathe, and welding tools, they can create exceptional parts with extreme precision. Whether it’s working with steel, aluminium, plastics, and even highly advanced Polyurethane (UHMPE) there is really nothing the team will not attempt to create. Jorson Technologies have engaged with a variety of local businesses to create clever solutions that will help their clients increase productivity, efficiency, and overall operation.

MARINE

AUTOMOTIVE

There is almost nothing that the Jorson Technologies crew cannot fabricate for the marine industry, from Goose Neck Masts to cap stays, shower drain covers to Perspex windows, tiller steering brackets – their ability is virtually unlimited. Not only can they replicate, but they can also improve - crafting sinker moulds out of aircraft grade aluminium so they will never fail and never corrode, or replacing the plastic in cap stays with stainless steel so they no longer break regularly – the sky's the limit.

Working closely with competitors in motorsport, primarily local Targa specialist Paul Frank Racing, the team at Jorson have now developed a range of automotive parts including quick-shift gearbox selector systems, quick release steering wheel hubs and a few secret products soon to be released. Additionally the team have started to re-create classic car parts including a 1950’s Ford badge for a car restoration, tail light lenses that can no longer be sourced and a range of new products for the mobility challenged.

LIFE’S BETTER WHEN YOU’RE BOATING

46 www.corelife.com.au

I

t’s no secret to say that the Whitsundays is at its best when you’re on the water.

There’s something in the way the Coral Sea sparkles that is purely mesmerising. Below the shimmering surface, clusters of colourful coral can be found all the way from the mainland to the iconic Great Barrier Reef. There are 74 islands beckoning to be explored, each with their own unique anchorages providing safe havens at sunset. The world’s best beach, Whitehaven, with its pure white silica sand and clear turquoise water, is a playground made more accessible when you’re not on someone else’s timetable. And who can forget the fishing. Escape to a secluded spot on the Coral Sea to wet a line and you’re likely to be rewarded with a bevvy of seafood, fresh from the depths to your dinner plate. Simply put, life’s better when you’re boating. Perfect sailing conditions, secluded anchorages, stunning rainforest walks, and sensational snorkeling are just a few of the reasons to set sail in the Whitsundays. But we’re not all natural-born boaties. First-time boat ownership can be a daunting thought for someone who hasn’t spent much time on the water. There’s rules, licenses, safety and portage to consider. Thankfully, Coral Sea Marina caters for boaties of all levels. Whether you are an avid sailor, a new boat owner, a salty sea dog or a landlubber – one thing is for sure, spending time on the water is good for the mind, body and soul. The team at Coral Sea Marina want to see as many locals and visitors as possible enjoying the world-famous Whitsundays and have tailored a wide range of services and facilities to cater to every boat owner. The Marina Village is one of the most popular recreation hubs in Airlie Beach. With waterfront restaurants and cafes plus a plethora of tourism operators providing everything from sunset cruises to jetski tours, it’s the ideal location to tie up and enjoy the hospitality and amenities of the Marina in-between time on the water. Are you ready to set sail?

Boating’s A Breeze At The Academy With 71 per cent of the Earth’s surface covered by water, there’s a whole lot of adventure waiting to be discovered by boat. Coral Sea Marina understands the ‘blue mind’ benefits of being out and about in nature, and this year have launched their Coral Sea Academy, where locals and visitors are welcome to join and stretch their sea legs. The Coral Sea Academy mission is to provide interactive and engaging events to consciously connect visitors and locals to boating, the environment and themselves, leaving them feeling inspired and empowered. Imagine having the confidence to set sail as the sun rises and chart a course to the islands, to encounter the Great Barrier Reef and marine life with a better understanding of their importance in nature, then to find a sheltered anchorage as the sun sets to do it all again tomorrow. Coral Sea Marina wants more people to discover that life’s better when you’re boating, so they have launched the Better Boating Series, as part of the Coral Sea Academy. These complimentary sessions cover everything from what to do in an emergency, radio and tender operation, basic navigation, and they complement the other Coral Sea Academy events such as sustainable boating, what to cook in your galley and local tips for sailing the Whitsundays. Events are open to the public and are free of charge. While the information sessions are ideal for beginner boaties, there are gems of knowledge for all boat enthusiasts to pick up, plus the sessions are a great way to bring like-minded boat lovers together in an informal environment. Plus, it’s great for peace-of-mind to take a refresher in boating basics. For more formalised training, the ‘Learn To Sail’ and ‘Get to know your boat better’ courses, with Mainstay Sailing, are available for practical, on-the-water coaching to give new boaters the confidence to head out on the water. For more information, put Coral Sea Academy into your website search engine.

More than just a Marina From getting on the water faster to security and facilities, berthing at a marina is an essential aspect to enjoying the boating lifestyle. Coral Sea Marina provides much more than a place to ‘park your boat’. As Queensland’s first 5-star Gold Anchor Platinum marina, the facilities go above and beyond to make every skipper’s experience a smooth one. Inclusive in all berthing is access to power, water and a range of concierge services, from a courtesy car to exclusive access to the floating Ocean Club or the newly launched private guest lounge, The Lookout Lounge. Ocean Club also provides the convenience of private amenities, laundry, a Guest Business Centre and complimentary WiFi. Mingle with other boaties, relax on the open-air sundeck, or enjoy a game of pool at The Lookout Lounge, giving you multiple spaces to get off your boat without leaving the marina. With 520 wet berths and the ability to accommodate vessels up to 80m, Coral Sea Marina has become a hub of choice for discerning boat owners across Australia. With short-and-long-term marina stays available, it can become your port of call as you explore other parts of Queensland, a place to rest for the weekend or your new home. For Mackay and Whitsunday ‘locals’, the marina offers reduced short-term berthing rates, allowing those who want to bring their boat for a few days to explore the islands, all the comforts of a marina stay. The Coral Sea Marina team love life on the water and every part of the marina village has been thoughtfully designed with boaties in mind. An excellent range of marine services can be found 48 www.corelife.com.au

within the marina village itself, so help is never far away. From rigging or electrics, to dive supplies and mechanical, the suppliers at Coral Sea Marina Resort can cater for your vessel’s requirements whilst you are comfortably berthed in the marina. If you’re new to the area, or new to boating, Coral Sea Marina is a great place to socialise, lend or receive boating advice, learn about the water conditions and receive tips on where to find the best of everything. You could say, Coral Sea Marina is the key to unlocking the jewels of the Whitsundays to live your best life yet.

Life’s Vibrant In The Village With the Queensland border opening to fellow Australians shortly and ongoing uncertainty facing international travel restrictions, Australians are looking to wet their wanderlust drought in the world-famous Whitsundays. Boat owners are flushing their motors in anticipation of exploring some of the best sailing grounds in the country. With the only option being to ‘holiday at home’, more of us are pursuing leisure activities within easy reach, with boat ownership rapidly rising. Celebrate the quintessential Whitsundays way of life at Coral Sea Marina’s waterfront dining destinations. The Garden Bar is a relaxed place to enjoy the magnificent marina views with a drink in hand, Bohemian Raw is touted as one of the best brekkie spots in town (try the famous acai bowls) or try the Kiosk Café for fresh sandwiches and great coffee, while Sorrento’s offers authentic Italian cuisine and is one of the best places in Airlie Beach to watch the sunset. The Rocks Restaurant, Bar & Pool Club at Coral

Sea Resort Hotel is located by the pool and offers an amazing location to wine, dine and relax whilst enjoying spectacular Coral Sea views. The breakfast buffet is back after a Covid hiatus and the inclusion of the exciting new Raw Bar for an array of seafood has elevated the evening dining choices available at the hotel. The award-winning Coral Sea Marina Resort is home to more than 80 per cent of the region’s on-water tourism operators, so it’s not just visiting boaties that have access to the paradise that is the Whitsundays. From the marina, visitors can skipper themselves on bareboat charters, soak up the surroundings on crewed day sailing, hire overnight private charters, even superyacht charters on the most lavish vessels are possible. Action-packed adventure tours also depart from Coral Sea Marina, including adrenalin jet ski islandhopping to the thrill of high-speed jet boating. A plethora of tours to explore the best of the Whitsundays is available, from half-day and full-day options to multi-day and overnight excursions. From sailing on romantic yachts, cruising on a catamaran or blasting across the swell at speed, there’s a tour to suit every desire. There are even sunset sailings to capture a crimson photo on the water before seeing the lights of Airlie Beach twinkle across the bay. Ensuring all vantage points are covered, take to the sky for an exhilarating way to view the wonders of the Whitsundays. From seeing the captivating Heart Reef to overlooking the swirling wonder of Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach, heli tours depart directly from the marina’s private helipads. Visit Coral Sea Marina to discover why life’s better when you’re boating.

In modern comfort you can journey back in time, with an insight into the region’s heritage from a team who are the passionate custodians of Ngaro Sea Country, the 74 Islands of the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. While learning about the historic importance of the area, you can rest assured that each element of your holiday has been achieved with the least impact on the local environment. Portland Roads Sailing the Whitsundays is the highest Advanced Eco Certified company in the Whitsundays. From turning sea water into fresh water, to trialling biofuels in their engines. A skilled sailor, Christophe competed in the America’s Cup which took him to Fremantle in West Australia in 1985. He spent two years living there until a new venture in boat sales took the couple to Dubai

where they enjoyed eight years selling luxury yachts. Moving back to Australia in 2010, Christophe was approached by the Chairman of Dream Yacht Charter Worldwide, who was thinking about purchasing a business in Airlie Beach. Jumping at the opportunity to join this prestigious brand, and as Managing Director, Christophe launched the first Dream Yacht Charter base in Australia. He has since expanded the business to include New Boat Sales to private owner’s and the Dream Yacht Charter Ownership Programs and the Dream Yacht Brokerage for used Yachts. They are also the exclusive sales agent for Bali Catamarans, the premier catamaran brand built by Catana in France. Investors benefit from the widest choice of high-end yacht brands with Dream Yacht Charter, offering monohulls, catamarans and power vessels from the increasingly popular Bali Catamaran range to Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Nautitech, Beneteau and Jeanneau. With over 45 destinations to choose from, including the magnificent Whitsundays, owning a yacht in charter offers a very attractive lifestyle choice with up to 12 weeks usage per year, and excellent returns. In the Whitsundays, there are 37 vessels available for Charter, including a choice of catamarans, monohulls and power cats, to suit your budget.

A selection of luxury catamarans are built for both comfort and stability, offering the ultimate cruising vessel to explore the Whitsunday wonderland. There is a sleep aboard service, to stay the night prior to your charter and a full four-hour briefing is given to familiarise you with the workings of your vessel and includes an area briefing, as the Whitsundays are a protected Marine Park. A boat license is not required to Charter a vessel in the Whitsundays; however, you will need to know your way around a boat, including anchoring, and basic navigational skills. If you cannot Sail, the team can arrange a Sail Guide to sail the vessel for you. The independence and flexibility of a bareboat charter creates the ideal family holiday experience. “People can disconnect from their iPad and smart phones – when you are on the boat you don’t have that connection to technology, so people connect together instead – they have to interact,” said Christophe. “Some people arrive feeling a bit nervous, especially if they haven’t spent much time on a boat before, but then when they come back, they are so happy and they have had a wonderful time!” If you are looking for a different experience that will bring your family together – book a bareboat charter with Dream Yacht Charter/Queensland Yacht Charters. www.corelife.com.au 51

Meet Terence Smith Principal and Chief Instructor

M

ainstay Sailing owner Terence Smith is the resident expert when it comes to all things training at Coral Sea Marina. Terence has been at the Marina for almost two years and provides the very highest level of marine training in the Whitsundays. His passion for teaching is what brought him to the Whitsundays, a sailor’s paradise, and there was no better place to head out on the waterways and train fledgling skippers than from Coral Sea Marina. “It’s been amazing at Coral Sea Marina, I actually met two of the girls at a boat show down in Sanctuary Cove many years ago,” Terence laughed. “We ended up becoming friends and they said if I ever came up here to the Whitsundays to give them a yell.”

56 www.corelife.com.au

“What I always say to Kate and the girls is that it feels like you’re a part of a big family, even though it’s a commercial marina, everybody helps each other.” Terence brings 45 years of sailing experience to the Marina, with 22 of those years as a commercial skipper. He has an undying passion for the water and the adventures that can be had in the sea. “A bad day on the water is often better than a good day on land,” Terence said. His school is one of the only RYA Accredited schools in Australia which can offer all of the qualifications needed to achieve a RYA Yacht Masters Certificate, and he loves being a part of the Coral Sea Marina family.

half English, half Dutch and self-described, “Rum side of the equation”, Mark Wyatt is a Londoner known as ‘Dr Rum” who with quite a few pit stops on the way, finally escaped to Airlie Beach and has been hiding out here for 21 years. Overseeing and promoting the beverage side of Fish D’vine, Dr Rum has been with the business since it started 18 years ago. Dr Rum is the Fish D’vine representative in the International #rumfamily, and as such, is a connoisseur of all things Rum, having at one stage been the proud curator of a mind blowing figure of varieties that was somewhere north of 600. “We are trimming down our selection to a much more sensible 192 at any one time,” Dr Rum laughed. Dr Rum has held a career in hospitality and the beverage industry for 22 years. More recently Dr Rum’s involvement in the rum world has meant he has been lucky enough to judge international cocktail

competitions and regularly reviews rum samples from all over the world. He is involved with product development of new rums entering the market working with Master Distillers, Master Blenders and visiting Distilleries. Previously Dr Rum has plucked poached pheasants for a local butcher, played the drums, run a small design and manufacturing operation, played with explosives in the Middle East, cultivated coffee and also landscaped on Daydream Island. In his time away, Dr Rum enjoys travelling, experiencing new food, relaxing with a book on the beach and spending even more time researching into the marvellous, wonderful, intriguing, and humorous world of Rum.

Travel Specialist

long way from his home in Hertfordshire, England, Red Cat’s Travel Specialist Luke Swift made what he says was the best decision of his life when moving to Airlie Beach in December of 2017. There’s no one better versed in the speciality of planning people’s holidays and making sure that their visit to the region is the best experience possible than Luke, who was offered sponsorship by Red Cat in 2020. Luke previously worked at Paradise Cove Resort with the company in 2017. Luke has a love for the industry and was ecstatic and grateful when his sponsorship was approved. “Tourism is still the most fun industry I’ve had the pleasure to work in and it’s what has kept me motivated whilst going through my visa

application” Luke said. “The biggest thing for me is getting to work closely with Asher and Jules and have them be so readily available to bounce ideas off and receive feedback. In my experience, this is very rare.” “I love working at Red Cat. They care about their staff and constantly remind us in the office that we are working to ensure that everyone who is employed can get enough hours to live their lives as best as possible.” From a family of two brothers and a sister, Luke is as ‘pommie’ as they come, having an absolute love for the beautiful game, and joining up to the local Whitsunday United Football Club as a player.

McCarthy Panel Works

Five Decades Of Panel Repair Philosophy

O

ver their fifty-year history, McCarthy Panel Works have grown and evolved, but their foundational virtues are uncompromising; no concession of quality because the job is always done right.

Andrea McCarthy said.

Opening all the way back in 1971, McCarthy Panel Works has always been a family, even right from when Craigs parents opened the doors, quality and customer service were paramount. Their son Craig took the reins in 1988, having grown up in the workshop and around cars, and he continued on the legacy of his father with the help of his wife, Andrea. Both have taken the business to new heights, whilst keeping its beating heart of family values and excellent service alive.

Their integrity has been their pride, and it’s the reason that they do mean so much to the community – Andrea and Craig have seen entire families, spanning three generations, come and seek the expert services they provide.

A small, modest building existed in those first few years when Ted and Lorraine ran the shop, it has expanded into something that they couldn’t believe. The business now comprises the original shed, which more than doubled with additions; an immense building out the back where the painters work tirelessly; and a new, upcoming building across the street which will house McCarthy’s office, aluminium , electric and hybrid vehicle workshop. “How it all came together and what we have been able to achieve since those days, it’s astounding,”

“To keep it going that long, it’s helped us to understand the importance of what it means to the community as well.”

The reason that McCarthy’s is so enduring is their exceptional ability to evolve. Craig has been a fount of ideas, creative approaches, and consistency in his craft that has always kept them ahead of the curb. In 2013, they achieved I-CAR Australia Gold Class Status – the very first repairer in the country - and it allows them to stay abreast of specific training needed for the latest model of cars. “We’re not like doctors for your car, we’re more like a vet - we have a lot more species we need to know about, when a doctor just needs to know about one species that has two models!” Andrea laughed. “Their models don’t change all that regularly either, whereas we deal with numerous different makes and models that change every year.” There’s a mammoth amount of information required to be at the top of the panel repair game

like McCarthy’s are, and they work exceptionally hard with their apprentices to make sure their training is at the forefront of the latest technology. With the ever-changing nature of their profession, Andrea became a part of the industry advisory board of I-CAR Australia and is the the chairperson of the NACA division of the Motor Trades Association of Queensland. McCarthy’s can voice Northern and Regional Queensland motorists’ concerns and share their own unique challenges that set them apart from city motorists. It is an exceptional business that has gone from strength to strength, building a culture around quality over quantity – they favour your safety, and are unwavering in that. “We want to get people back on the road as fast as we can, but it has to be safe, that is our main priority,” Andrea said. “We might push to replace a part that has broken underneath the panel which can cause your car to be unsafe, this unfortunately creates delays, so specifying a repair time can be tricky it really is a best guess albeit an educated one." Their ability to stay at the very top for so long, without compromising on their standards is a testament to the company’s ethos: when you’re in the shop, you’re a part of the family.

Brooklyn Allen Receptionist

I

t was personal experience with McCarthy Panel Works that led Brooklyn Allen to become an integral part of the enormous and impressive team at Mackay’s longest serving panel beaters. Having moved to Mackay from an administrative position in mining 12 months ago, Brooklyn’s car troubles led her to McCarthy’s where she immediately felt the good vibes. “I had my car fixed here last November, and I saw how lovely they all were; they were so nice when I came in and picked my car up,” Brooklyn said. “It’s just a really good group of people and I’m so happy that the job came up when I was leaving the mines.” It was two months after she had her own personal experience with the business that the position for receptionist came up at McCarthy’s, and she’s never looked back. “When I applied for the job a few months later, it was one of my first interviews in Mackay and the only

F one that I wanted!” she laughed. “It’s all very different to mining and I love the before and after; how bad the car looks at first and then how good it looks when it leaves.” Brooklyn says that the transformations these cars go through are always a surprise to customers, who are more than thankful. “They’re grateful and you always get a lot more good than you do bad; but that’s always the way with reception – you cop a bit of everything!” When she’s not the first point of contact at McCarthy’s front desk, Brooklyn loves spending time with her partner and two dogs at home or building her social life in a new city.

rom Emerald, Reece Williams handed his resume in at McCarthy Panel Works as his first stop for a job in Mackay and was immediately snapped up – he’s now one of the more senior panel repairers at McCarthy’s, having worked for Craig and Andrea for three years and even becoming a part of the family. “They’re the most easy-going, lovely people and you couldn’t ask for better bosses,” Reece said. “The culture here is a proper family; they treat everyone fairly and if you need something, you just talk to them.” Reece’s panel repair journey began at high school in Emerald when he was 16, where job placements led him down a track he fell instantly in love with. “Cars, man, I just like cars! My parents own a wrecking yard, so I grew up around them as a kid and I just love them,” he said. “I had no idea what panel repair was

back then!” Craig and Andrea have helped Reece become a Platinum I-Car Australia panel beater and have seen him grow in his career, as well as build a great life in Mackay. What really gets Reece’s motor running is restoration work – maintaining and fixing old cars, although those come through rarely at McCarthy’s. “We do mainly insurance work here – this is a lot, lot different; it’s more cutting, patching and it’s just more repairing what’s there and fixing,” he said. “I love the end product of it; it takes a good couple of years to get through one and it's just my favourite part.”

“I was at home playing Minecraft or something, that’s how long ago it was, and my sister gave me a call,” Bryce said. “It never occurred to me about painting and panel repair, but she said, ‘I’ve got the job for you’.” “I remember running down the road to my sister’s house, she lived next door to the supervisor at the time [at McCarthy’s] and I typed up my resume immediately!” He went through the apprenticeship process and soon fell in love with painting, building a great career out of something that he would never have tried or succeeded at without the help of Craig, Andrea, and the entire team.

“Then, I wash it up, clean it, make sure all the parts are on it and I do the detailing.”

“I really love working with cars; it’s been a total change for me and being out of the office and into the workshop with the guys is so refreshing.”

It’s the all-important job in the process, which Yvette has been working at for nearly five months since she joined the company back in May of this year. THE BEST EXPERIENCE YOU’LL HAVE CRASHING YOUR CAR Lachlan Nielsen

J

ust next door to McCarthy’s building in O’Loughlin St, works Lachlan Nielsen, who is a familiar story for McCarthy’s Panel Works – he’s known them for the long haul, ever since he moved to Mackay, and he knows exactly where to head if his car takes any damage. “I’ve known them for about 24 years now, lots of personal cars – we’ve got six utes that roll around - and they’ve been in and out for things like kangaroo damage,” Lachlan said. “As far as booking in and service, they’re awesome; it's such good quality. “You know you’re going to get it back when it’s finished properly – it's never at a lesser standard – I’ve not taken anything back once it’s been finished.” The convenience of McCarthy’s being next door has never been lost on Lachlan, who laughed about how many cars he’s sent through to Andrea and Craig. Lachlan said that the family business was like a home away from home with how great all of the employees were. “Everyone working there is great and

they’re so easy to deal with, which is half the reason I go there whenever I have any troubles,” he said. “The lads in there are such a great bunch and I always know that my cars are in safe hands when I take them in there – I always have a bit of a laugh with them too.” Lachlan said that in almost each instance of taking his car into McCarthy’s, it came back in better condition than even before the accident. Although McCarthy’s are sure to return the vehicles to their pre-crash condition, they usually bring them back with an extra special touch. “We had a kangaroo wipe out the entire side of the car, and they had it back to us brand new – probably looking better than when we got it!” he said. Although he’s not a fan of crashing his car, Lachlan always leaves with a smile on his face after he drops anything off next door. “I’ll be there time and time again to drop off my car with them – they’re honestly the best of the best.”

FAMILY MATTERS

BUILDING A FAMILY LEGACY TAKES TIME

Time and family, what do they mean to you? Local business owners and sisters Laura DePinto and Debbie Sandilands know these are two precious commodities you can’t put a price on. They feel eternally blessed that they have been able to combine both in one of Mackay’s retail success stories, Tick Tock Two. “Family means so much and it’s such an integral part of our lives,” Laura said. “We love that we’ve been able to grow our little business to become a household name among Mackay and Whitsunday locals.” Tick Tock Two pays homage to the family’s original business, Tick Tock Jewellers. The legacy started with Laura and Debbie’s parents, Bob and Yvonne Nurnberger. Bob was a natural-born tinkerer and enjoyed problem solving. He started his trade as a watch maker at only 14 years old. After mastering his craft, Bob wanted to work for himself, and established Tick Tock Jewellers in 1973. After 40 years of business, Bob and Yvonne put Tick Tock on the market. Debbie and Laura couldn’t

pass up the opportunity to keep their parent’s legacy alive, so they bought the store and named it as the sequel, Tick Tock Two. “We wanted to keep the original family values that Tick Tock Jewellers had come to be known by, but with a modern take on the business,” Debbie said. The family values, friendly service and traditional craftsmanship are still as important as ever in Tick Tock Two, but additionally, the sisters have introduced new lines of stock to broaden the range of gifts available. Bob is living proof that you can’t keep a good man down. “Dad still works 6-days-per-week doing repairs. We can’t see him slowing down any time soon,” Laura laughed. “He and mum ‘officially’ retired 7-years ago when the original Tick Tock closed its doors, but he never really stopped doing what he loves.

finally allowed to serve a customer. “I sold my very first watch band on day one and I’ll never forget it,” she said. Cyclone Yasi provided one of the greatest challenges to the original business, but it again reminded the sisters why family is an integral part. “It was the biggest natural disaster the shop has endured. The next day everyone from the family arrived, brooms in hand, to sweep and mop. We’ve survived the mining downturn, a car smashing through the front window and numerous break-ins but we still, every time, come out stronger,” Laura said. The feeling of family extends to their staff and customers too. Two of the store’s four employees, Fina and Maggie, have been with the business since the original Tick Tock Jewellers days.

“It was a natural progression to get him back on the bench.”

“Life goes on, there’s always a birthday, anniversary or Christmas to look forward to. We love providing timeless keepsakes that we know our customers look at daily and will cherish for generations,” Debbie said.

Laura said she had fond memories of being at the store before and after school. At age 7 she was

“It’s so special to be an integral part of this community.”

FAMILY MATTERS

Whitsunday Shire Family Day Care have been providing the Whitsundays with quality childcare since 1984 with Educators currently based in Proserpine, Midge Point, Strathdickie, Wilson Beach, Cannonvale, Jubilee Pocket and Mandalay. With high quality early learning in an educator’s own home, each child’s individual needs can be met offering parent’s peace of mind. Whitsunday Shire Family Day Care is an ‘Exceeding’ rated service. This rating has been maintained since the introduction of the National Quality Framework in 2012. Family Day Care’s unique small mixed-age group setting encourages the formation of genuine and trusting long-lasting relationships, promotes the development of confidence and selfworth and fosters a sense of belonging, being and becoming; all which play an important role in the foundations of a child’s sense of identity. Each education and care environment have the capacity to offer care for children from birth to 13 years of age, often allowing siblings to experience quality educational programs together in the same location, whilst having the security and familiarity of family. In small groups, children will enjoy a natural approach to play and discovery and form genuine lasting bonds with their passionate early childhood educator. This unique setting creates a special space where each child is free to thrive and develop their own personalities. An environment where educators have more time to help every child pursue their passions and can actively support new hobbies, creating a space where everyone receives dedicated attention and feels the comforting embrace of a family unit. Amanda Brett, Coordinator for Whitsunday Shire Family Day Care said, “The low child-to-educator ratios allow stronger bonds to be formed to develop consistent relationships. Educators care for a maximum of four children under pre-school age each day, and an additional three school aged children (if they choose), fostering the needs of each individual child within their pre-approved home environment. The homes meet strict safety criteria. In many cases the same small group of children will grow together within the one home and this close connection often extends well beyond their time with Family Day Care. We have long-term educators that have been to the weddings and to christenings of children they once cared for and are now caring for their children. Our Family Day Care Educator Vicki planted a lemon seed with a day care child when he was a young boy, and now his own children attend Vicki’s and are eating lemons from the tree that grew from that seed. The long-term relationships that are formed are very special.”

“I love the Family Day Care environment, it’s more personal when you only have four children, you have more time to get to know each child and more of a family environment to enjoy. I became an Educator when my son was a baby so that I could stay at home with him but still earn a great income and it’s been amazing! I find it very rewarding, especially when the children I’ve known for years still wave to me across the road. I even get invited to 18th and 21stwww.corelife.com.au birthdays, weddings and christenings!” 68

The Coordination Unit provides their educators access to an extensive toy and equipment library which keeps set up costs minimum” For further information or an information package contact the office on 49452422. “Our educator, Debbie, creates a loving environment for my girls. I have three daughters and she has cared for them from when they were babies through to my eldest starting school. Care is consistent so they know where they are going each day and what their routine is. It’s a bit like a second home and there is always heaps of one-on-one time. Debbie has been amazing, she has become a massive part of our family’s life and our girls just adore her – even outside of day care, she is here for us. I would recommend a family day care to anyone.” www.corelife.com.au 69

BELL

OF CATION

A

new chapter is about to be written in the history of Catholic Education in Mackay, with Catherine McAuley College drawing ever closer to opening its doors. The opening of the new Catholic College will add to the rich history of the 200-year-old legacy of Catholic Education in Australia. Catherine McAuley College will welcome its first cohort of students at the beginning of the 2022 school year, starting with Year 7, building to Year 12 over the next five years. Catherine McAuley College’s Principal Mr Jim Ford said that these students will be making history as the College’s first students. “College is always a big step up for children so they will need a fair bit of support, at school and at home. Year 7 comes straight from primary school so their initial year at College is fairly structured before they branch out to specialised subjects as they begin to think about career paths,” Mr Ford said. “I hope in years to come they have a sense of pride in what they accomplish at the College and in being its first graduates once they complete Year 12.” Catherine McAuley College is the first new Catholic College to be opened in the Diocese of Rockhampton since 1995. It is being built on the site of the former Mackay Sugar Research Institute and will adopt the charism of the Sisters of Mercy under the patronage of their Founder Catherine McAuley. This charism inspired the College’s Educational Mission which has a strong emphasis on learning shaping its direction. The steering committee is also delighted that it has been able to incorporate the story, vision, and the commitment to the local community as well as research and learning that was part of the Sugar Research Institute’s story. “Given the heritage of the building we’re taking over, the Sugar Research Facility was at the cutting edge of sugar research. To build on that and specialise in our offering of the STEM subjects is to pay homage to the building’s past while offering the best in science and technology to students,” Mr Ford said. Director of Catholic Education - Diocese of Rockhampton Leesa Jeffcoat AM announced Mr Ford as the Principal in 2020. Formerly the Principal of Mercy College in Mackay, Mr Ford took up his new role early in 2021 to lead the planning for Catherine McAuley College. Miss Jeffcoat said he has a great depth of experience in education. “Jim is a highly respected educator and leader who has forged strong links with colleagues, the Parish and the wider Mackay community. He brings to the role a depth of experience in

leadership and a commitment to creating a contemporary learning environment founded on Gospel values and the principles of lifelong learning for all,” Miss Jeffcoat said. “This is an exciting new chapter for Catholic Education, and we are delighted to be able to respond to the needs of parents and families in the Mackay and wider community,” she said. With key staff now appointed, Mr Ford said he is pleased with the depth of educational experience across the head of departments. “It’s crucial to have high quality staff,” he said. “The initial staffing of the College has gone very well. I’m very impressed with the quality of the people we have leading the College in key appointments. “Our key focus is to look after our people and ensure they have what they need to lead the college well. They all have impressive ambition when it comes to curriculum and what they hope for the students to achieve. It’s an exciting time.” Mr Ford said the leadership team has been focused on delivering the best opportunities for the new students. “My hope for these students is that they will come out of the classroom saying how much they enjoy school. “If they can form friendships and find the classes interesting, then they go home with a positive experience. That would be a really good start. “As they make their way up to completing year 12, we hope they have a sense of belonging and pride of being foundation students of Catherine McAuley College. That would be tremendous.” He added that Catherine McAuley College is a college for the 21st century. “It has marvelous facilities and is a resounding endorsement of Catholic Education and the future of Mackay,” Mr Ford said. “It will be a characterized by contemporary teaching standards, inspired curriculum, information technology systems and staff fully committed to achieving great outcomes for all students. “There will be a range of specialist subjects offered as well as a full suite of cultural and sporting opportunities to make it an enriching experience for the students.” Mr Ford said the response to the new College opening and the level of interest in Mackay has been excellent. “We have a full complement of students for the 2022 year already but certainly we welcome enquiries for 2023 and beyond.”

IF YOU CAN BE ANYTHING THIS CHRISTMAS

FAMILY MATTERS

BE KIND AND ADOPT A FAMILY “If you have food in your fridge, clothes in your wardrobe, sleep in a bed and have a roof over your head you are richer than 75% of the world’s population” The delight on our children’s faces as they open an array of presents on Christmas Day, the cupboards are full of delicious treats and the family gathers together for a swim in the pool, with drinks flowing and good times rolling. This is likely to be the fun festive image that conjures up in your mind when you think of Christmas Day, but for many people in our community the reality can be far removed from this idyllic scene – for some, it can be the opposite. While the rest of us are looking forward to spoiling our loved ones with carefully considered gifts, others are panic-stricken and stressed about being able to afford even one present for their child. While many of us are bringing a home-cooked contribution to a bountiful table spread, others are worrying about how they will make even a basic meal on Christmas Day.

Fortunately, the team at Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre are here to assist any members of the community that are ‘doing it tough’ over the festive season. Families who are on a low-income, individuals who find themselves unemployed and older people who may not have much support around them are embraced by the loving arms of our community through Adopt A Family, an initiative that has been giving Christmas gifts and festive food items to almost 50 households every year for a decade. And the best part about it is - everyone is invited to get involved! The process is simple, those interested are asked to pick a family from the Facebook page, the names of which are coded to ensure privacy, with only the age and gender of its members given. Once a family has been selected, the donators can purchase a suitable gift voucher from a local retail outlet. Perhaps a massage voucher for mum or a fishing voucher for dad, a local tour experience for the

whole family, toys for the children or even a butcher or grocer voucher so a family could enjoy a special meal on Christmas Day – the options are endless and a flexible voucher gives the recipients the opportunity to choose what they would enjoy most. Chief Executive Officer of the Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre, Bec Woods, says that they encourage people to shop local. “We have found that by encouraging vouchers people are more likely to use small businesses and that means that more people in the community benefit than just the families,” she said. “While we’re helping families at a grass root level, we are also supporting the economy and small business.” If you would like to contribute this Christmas simply head to the Adopt A Family Facebook page and choose a family, then purchase vouchers and drop them off to the Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre.

FAMILY MATTERS

Don’t Leave Your Mental Health On The Shelf with Sophie Birgan

F

amily brings us so much love, but often our relationships with family members can be rife with confusion, mixed-messages and changing dynamics that leave us feeling lost and baffled. At Christmas especially, this can magnify our stress and anxiety levels; when you spend more time with your immediate family or re-connect with those that you may not have seen for some time. As the year comes to an end, we often mix these influences with natural self-reflection; taking stock of the past and looking ahead to the future we want to create. This self-appraisal is healthy; however, it can often dredge up old patterns and conditioning that further compound our fragile mental health over the festive season. Whether you are at a pivotal moment in your life, navigating the turbulent waters of a new blended family dynamic or feeling the isolation and loss that comes with severed ties, it is better to be proactive about your emotional health and reach out to a professional who can help you swim instead of sink. Sophie Birgan has worked with countless families and couples over the course of her career and is skilled at uncovering the deep-rooted issues that often lay at the base of the issues people face. She also offers real-life practical skills and solutions for a wide range of challenges such as addictions, depression, anxiety and communication breakdown. Recommending most people only need between three and five sessions to resolve the issue, Sophie says that with her help, most challenges can be resolved quickly and easily, allowing individuals to thrive within their unique family setting. “If there is anxiety, depression or addiction affecting a household –

the child can feel it. All unresolved issues impact on the family structure and it is best to deal with them before they get out of hand,” she said. Using little family models to paint a picture of the behaviour, Sophie is able to explore the issue in a pragmatic way. She also unearths the root-causes by taking clients back in time to explore their origins, which in some cases could take you back through your childhood or even your ancestry. “Dealing with early trauma involves dealing with your unconscious mind – unwanted thought patterns and conditioning can trigger certain behaviours,” said Sophie. “For example, early trauma causes a disturbance in the mind which often gets played out in the form of addiction.” Through hypnotherapy, Sophie is able to address these issues in a gentle way, recalibrating your mind and setting it on a new trajectory – one where the future is hopeful and your dreams of an open and honest connection with your family is a tangible reality you can create. An educator, psychotherapist and counsellor for almost 20 years, Sophie has a deep passion for personal development. With a Diploma in Clinical Counselling, Diploma in Business Management and Leadership and a Certified Master Practitioner in Systemic Family Constellations and EMI Therapy, she has a broad range of specialist credentials that allow her to help a diverse range of people. Don’t put your mental health on the shelf this festive season - give yourself the gift of exploring your inner self which will deepen your relationships with those you cherish the most.

id you know that, in September this year, Proserpine’s St Catherine’s Catholic College was named in the top 5 per cent of primary schools in Queensland. This incredible achievement is a testament to the drive of the ever-evolving school where students are nurtured and sculpted into their best selves. How do they achieve it all? It starts with learning.

LEARNING The progress of students is the school’s core business. A focus on literacy has seen the implementation of evidence-based strategies, and the exceptional NAPLAN results are the proof in the pudding. Of the 20 results that St Cath’s receives from NAPLAN, students scored above the national average for 15 of them. Through a constant review and tracking process, students are assured of growth in their learning. The school also has robust intervention, support, and extension programs for students who need them. Our dedicated expert early years educators prioritize the provision of a strong foundation in both numeracy and literacy. Parents as welcomed as genuine and contributing partners in their child’s education, and work collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes for their students.

PLAY SPACES The play areas in the Early Years Precinct at St Catherine’s are engaging and shaded, including both play equipment and mini sporting areas. Kindergarten, Prep, and the Year 1 and 2 classrooms are part of the precinct that includes modern technology in the classrooms. In 2022, the school is continuing its growth in the early years area that connects with Proserpine’s rural heart. Enhancing and increasing their current garden beds, the school is planting a small onsite orchard, and installing a native beehive that will allow students to see bees do their work. They have even purchased an old restored tractor that will be installed, allowing kids a further engaging play option. Eventually this will be a full cycle, ongoing project for all early years students incorporating pollination, composting, planting and garden preparation.

SERVING THE WHITSUNDAYS There are twenty, convenient, safe and reliable bus runs servicing the Kindy to Year 12 College and transporting students safely to school and home daily from Bowen, Jubilee Pocket, Bloomsbury, and Crystalbrook. In 2022, St Catherine’s will have a staff member on their express bus from Jubilee Pocket to support their early years students.

ringing a new and totally natural concept to your eyewear, Specsavers Cannonvale have launched a revolutionary brand of specs which are not only elegant to wear, but also good for the environment. Partially made with recycled and bio-based materials, these clever lenses are helping to reduce plastic waste, one step at a time. Introducing ReWear, an environmentally conscious way to see the world. Each frame is manufactured using five recycled plastic water bottles, creating high quality, durable and desirable glasses that will make a statement wherever you go. Inspired by nature, each frame infuses a natural element within their colour, design and also their unique name. Boasting a collection of 24 glasses and six sunglass styles, each design is inspired by nature in both style and substance, as the brand takes its first steps into sustainable eyewear. From Lavender to Elm, River, Rain and Sandalwood, each frame name evokes the textures of nature, which in turn is brought to life in the specs themselves. Available in a range of colours, ReWear is inspired by the natural world around us, from soft blossom, rain and slate to richer tones of dark plumb and soft berry. While the colours transcend, the choice of frame embodies natural style and contemporary living with a range of classic shapes and minimalist designs complimented by the playful colours and translucent acetates, making the range wearable for everyone. Ideally suited to our Whitsunday way of life, reflecting the vibrant natural environment where we live, these frames give a softness to the visage and peace of mind to its owner who knows that the specs they wear have saved five plastic bottles from entering land fill. To sample these sustainable specs for yourself, simply visit the Specsavers store at Whitsunday Plaza in Cannonvale to try them on. “We’re thrilled to add another stylish range to the Specsavers portfolio and even more excited that this the most ecofriendly range in our collection,” said Specsavers Head of Product, Nelly Soleil. “Our customers are focused, now more than ever, on making choices that lessen their impact on the environment. The ReWear range offers a step in the right direction for customers wanting to make a more positive change without compromising on style or quality.” www.corelife.com.au 77

DENIKA KAY

THE BUSINESS OF BEAUTY There’s more to lashes than meets the eye. Achieving a full flutter that looks natural is an artform that comes with years of experience. From the type of extensions to complement the occasion to maintaining lash health, Lash Gold Studio Owner Denika Kay explains the balance behind the blink. “I’ve created my brand around customising all full sets to suit the client and maintain their natural lash health,” Denika said. “By selecting the right weight of the extension for the natural lash, along with correct isolation and placement, you can ensure the client’s extensions fall out naturally with the natural lash,” she said. “Everyone wants to achieve amazing style and retention. Maintaining high standards of lashing in the salon has been my main focus.” Lash Gold has garnered a reputation for achieving a natural look even with fullness and length requested. It’s as though the client was born with an incredible set of lashes. “This brings a lot of business professionals our way who want to look stunning yet still appropriate for a corporate setting,” Denika said.

As well as owning the salon, Denika is also a lash and brow artist. She is joined by Beautician Georgia Eiser and Kailah McLean who is a MUA and lash and brow artist. “Kailah has a Certificate III in Makeup which includes lash extension, spray tanning and brow training. She has been an incredibly fast learner over the past year, picking up on my industry knowledge and blossoming as a talented lash artist,” Denika said. “Georgia also has a Certificate III in Makeup and specialises in brows and hybrid lash extensions. She is studying her Diploma in Beauty Therapy which opens the door for a range of new services on the horizon.” While lashes enhance the windows to the soul, brows frame the face. When Denika moved her at-home salon to a serene space on Palmer Street in North Mackay, she made lunchtime brow appointments for busy professionals more achievable. “Every 4 to 8 weeks those fuzzy arches need some love and attention. With so much focus being on a perfectly arched full set of brows, the service has grown in demand alongside the lash artistry,” Denika said.

“From tinting and waxing to lamination and brow masks, we have grown and evolved our services to keep up with the trends. We strive for perfection with every appointment and are forever learning and progressing as technicians and people. “We love working in this industry, building bonds with our clients and seeing their smiles when we’ve transformed their face. It’s not just about beauty, it’s delivering a boost of self-confidence.” Lash Gold provides a plethora of makeup and beauty maintenance services; as well as lash and brow artistry there is waxing and spray tanning services also. Denika has created her own brand of lash extension supplies which will soon be on sale to other lash artists in the region. “Lash Gold will be stocking the highest quality lash extension products at affordable prices. “Also launching January 2022, will be Mackay’s most prestigious lash academy. “With our extensive business and industry knowledge, as well as the backing of an international lash master and other lash industry professionals, you can learn the art of eyelash extensions with full confidence you will receive the most in-depth training www.corelife.com.au and ongoing support.” 79

YOURSELF W

hen you have a moment to yourself, some time away from the hectic pace of everyday life, it’s nice to feel pampered, fresh and invigorated – and that’s exactly how the team at Reflections Hair Salon in Airlie Beach want you to feel. From the moment you enter the salon, you are greeted with a friendly smile and beckoned inside like you are a member of the family. Tina and her team understand the needs of all their clients and often go above and beyond to make sure you are happy. From offering flexible appointments, to ensuring all of their services are affordable so that you still have money in your purse after your pampering session – there is heart and soul in every element and every treatment. Tina bought Reflections in February this year, choosing to purchase an iconic local hair salon which has been in the same location for 32 years. The previous owner had forged out an excellent reputation, one that Tina is looking forward to continuing while adding a few of her own ideas along the way. One of these new ideas has been to change her colour brand to NAK hair products which is Australian owned and vegan. Not only is it ethically sourced, it also leaves your hair feeling soft and nourished. “I just love the NAK brand – it actually adds more shine and more moisture to your hair than I’ve seen in any other brand,” said Tina. “You can add a treatment into the colour that protects your hair and reduces breakage for blonds by up to 70 per cent! It’s also a medium, mid-range product – so it is really nourishing but also affordable.” For clients that do not have the time or ability to visit the salon regularly, NAK offer a range of coloured conditioners to keep your hair looking bright and feeling fresh. Working like a toner to maintain your look, the conditioner has a colour pigment in it which is perfect for bringing out the best in blonde, blacks, and chocolate so that the colour lasts as long as possible. Originally from Brisbane, Tina moved to Emerald when she was 11 and spent most of her late childhood there. In 2018 she moved to Airlie Beach with her three children – Jordan who is now 14, Riley who is 12 and Hannah who is 10. After 19 years in the industry, Tina decided to take a leap of faith and run her own salon. Joining her in the team is Natalie Lekic who is a first-year apprentice. Operating six days a week and closed on Sunday, Reflections is one of the only local hairdressers who open on Monday from 10am and on other mornings, from 8.30am. Offering a full range of hair services from Zala hair extensions to trims, colours, balayage and complete re-styles the team also invite the men to enjoy an experienced barber service with cutthroat razoring, beard shaping and razor fades available. There are also a full-range of beauty services which include waxing, tinting, spraytanning and full make-up. So, whether you are looking for a genuine and caring hairdresser who will always put you first, a beauty treatment that is both quality and affordable or even a relaxing location for your bridal preparations – look to Reflections first to see how they can bring out the best in you.

SAME HANDS DIFFERENT NAME BARB POPP

F

ormerly known as Popp Hand Therapy, the Nebo Road business, located in Courts Corner, recently rebranded to Upper Limbs & Things to reflect a broader range of services now available.

“For those people worrying that the business had sold, we’re reassuring our clients that it’s the same hands here, just a different name and a growing range of services.” Barb wanted to reassure friends, family and clients that she is still Barb Popp. An error in the last edition of Core Magazine referred to Barb by her maiden name of Fordyce, which came as a shock to Barb when she opened the magazine. “I haven’t been called Fordyce in decades,” she said. Owner and Occupational Therapist Barb Popp said that they now treat more than hands, wrists and elbows. “Earlier in the year, we welcomed a new Occupational Therapist to the team who is also a lymphoedema specialist,” Barb explained. “Nicole Little has a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and is a member of the Australasian Lymphology Association. “She focuses on the lymphatic and venous systems which are found throughout the whole body, so that’s where the ‘& Things’ part of our new name comes into play,” Barb said. Lymphoedema can occur after surgery or trauma, where the lymph nodes are removed, or part of the lymphatic system is damaged. Because the lymphatic system doesn’t work like it used to, swelling can develop which may be challenging to move. While all injuries are unique, the commonality is a desire to get back to full functionality and independence. Upper Limbs & Things specialise in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of all problems and injuries relating to the upper limb as well as lymphoedema, vascular conditions, scars and swelling. Be it sporting injuries, arthritis, fractures, tendon injuries, joint dislocations, burn and scar management, overuse injuries, surgery following cancer or trauma, leg ulcers, varicose veins or lymphoedema: Upper Limbs & Things provide expert diagnosis, quality education and treatment plans to assist your full and quick recovery. With a team of six Occupational Therapists, Upper Limbs & Things has extensive experience to draw upon. “Problem solving is at the heart of what we do,” Barb said. “At the most basic level, I believe the role of an Occupational Therapist is to help people become independent. We take the time to analyse to discover the ‘why’ behind the problem. “The most rewarding part of the job is being able to get someone to take ownership and to empower them to know they’re in control, so they can live a life with more function.” Barb has been a qualified Occupational Therapist for almost 30 years, is an Accredited Hand Therapist and has been in private practice for more than 20 years. Being able to provide a specialist service to regional and rural clients as well as professionals is one of Barb’s progressive achievements. “The more I evolve, the more I see we have such an opportunity to help people to learn to become independent and adapt,” Barb said. “Everyone should have the freedom of movement, from simple tasks like doing your hair or folding the washing to picking up your children or playing a sport you love. We’re the helping hands to guide you back to the freedom of living your best life.” With Upper Limbs & Things, you’re in good hands! 82 www.corelife.com.au

MIND, BODY & SOUL

TRANSFORMING

MINDS &LIVES

IF YOU OFTEN CATCH YOURSELF DAYDREAMING, YOU’RE NOT ALONE. A team of psychology experts at Queen's University in Canada discovered that the average person has more than 6,000 thoughts per day. With so much chatter going on behind the scenes of an already busy lifestyle, mixed with the uncertainty of change stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s never been a more crucial time to nurture your mental health. Psychologist and Director of Mind Matters Psychology Anna Croce has a passion for building mental resilience, enhancing mental health and assisting with mindfulness and emotional intelligence. She said while the stigma surrounding mental health has improved, she would love to see people talking as freely about maintaining mental health as they do about maintaining physical health. “Your mind and body are like machines, they need maintenance, so they don’t break down,” Anna said. “People have no hesitation in saying to an employer they need time off to treat a viral infection or a broken bone, but people are reluctant to say they

need time off to work on their mental resilience.” Anna said it’s important for people to reach out for help when they notice they aren’t feeling like themselves. “I often see people in crisis when it’s gone on for far too long. “If someone is finding they are distancing themselves from people, they aren’t finding joy in things that used to make them happy, they may be having difficulty sleeping or going to work is getting harder. Those are some of the things that could indicate it’s time to talk to someone. “It’s about helping people to live their best life possible.” Anna said the relationship between a client and their psychologist is key to their healing and empowerment. “We have a compassionate and caring approach where people are treated very respectfully. We want people to know they aren’t being judged so they can truly open up in a safe environment,” she said. “Every client has my number, I’m very accessible. I never want them to feel like they aren’t important.

“It’s driven by the client’s goals, their needs, at their pace.” Her own journey put her on an early path of building resilience. Her family moved from a small village in Italy to Brisbane when she was 10. She didn’t speak any English but was put straight into school. With more than 30 years of psychology experience, Anna has worked in a variety of settings with the ability to empathise with people from all walks of life. She started her career as a prison psychologist and has worked in hospitals, private practices and not-for-profit organisations before setting up her own private practice in 2020. She assists in a wide variety of therapy, from anxiety and depression through to complex trauma. She also specialises in couple’s therapy. “Every day is exceptionally rewarding, seeing the changes in people, when I see them becoming empowered, using different language, I see a different demeanor; that is the best feeling,” Anna said. “When I get to say to a client, ‘I don’t think you need to see me anymore’ and seeing the look of accomplishment on their face, it’s why I do this.”

We’reHere For You At Mind Matters Psychology, we have a compassionate and caring approach with our clients and believe that the relationship between a client and their psychologist is key to their healing and empowerment. We use evidence-based practice to assist our clients in improving their lives.
