While the classic fairytale ending ‘happily ever after’ envisages a single, finite destiny, the contemporary feminine experience encompasses a multiplicity of roles, expectations, endings, beginnings and relationships. Thus the exhibition theme is best conceptualised as a celebration of diversity within destiny, with the fairytale genre used as the narrative vehicle to explore this idea.

Heard of The Blackwater Fever? No? We reckon after just one listen, you’ll be adding them to your Favourites playlist quick smart. With two-thirds of the band hailing from Central Queensland, and considering they are absolutely smashing it on the Australian music scene, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to catch up with The Blackwater Fever’s frontman, Shane Hicks, to chat about what it’s like to be in a real live rock band. Howdy Shane. Tell us the names of the fine individuals who make up The Blackwater Fever? Well there’s me on guitar A and vocals, Andrew on drums and Jed on keys and bass. Jed is actually a newcomer to the band. He joined up about 10 months ago. Before then we were a guitar / drums duo. It’s great to have added that third element and expand our sound.

For people who may not have heard your music before, tell us a bit about your sound. We are an original band A based in Brisbane. We write all types of songs from blues and rock to country and ambient. But when asked to pigeon hole our

sound, I like to call it ‘Dark Garage Blues’. You released your second studio album in May this year, In Stereo, which got rave reviews. What’s your favourite part of the album making experience? I guess my favourite past is A doing the initial tracking of each song. It’s your last chance to perfrom what you think the song should sound like in your head. Then when you choose a take, you lock it down. We have such a backlog of material we need to recorded. So I love signing off on songs. Ticking them off the list and moving on.

We don’t mean to be pushy, but how long do we have to wait for the third album? We’ve actually just started A tracking it! We’re recording it ourselves this time around, now that Andrew and I have collected enough nice gear to record with. We are all really excited about the sounds we’re pulling ‘in house’. It’s very liberating knowing that we’re at a point where we can record ourselves at a really professional level. No more expensive studios!!!

Wow, that’s a lot of exclamation marks. We’re excited for you too!!! We’ve heard you’ve even had one of your songs included on the soundtrack for an Aussie movie? Yeah, the movie is called A ‘The Tunnel’. It’s a horror flick filmed in the defunct underground tunnels of Sydney. The track they used was ‘Better Off Dead’. It’s a pretty minor part of the socre, but it’s great just to be a part of it.

Now you’re just being humble. We hear a couple of you boys actually grew up around these parts? Yeah, all my family are in A Mackay, but I’ve never lived there permanently myself, just visited for Christmas holidays and stuff. I grew up in Dysart and Andrew actually spent the first half of his life in Yeppoon. So we’re both Central Queensland fellas at heart even though we haven’t lived there for ages.

Any plans to come back to Mackay? A Hmmm... maybe. It’s been a while. But we’ll be focusing on completing the album for most of the rest of this year. Wait and see!

Chilli Prawn Pizza

You may think the only way to get the best tasting pizza is to cook it in a wood fired oven – NOT TRUE! You’d be surprised to know that all you need is your favourite pizza toppings, your trusty hooded barbeque and a pizza stone. A pizza stone works by reproducing the intense dry heat of a traditional pizza oven. It distributes heat evenly, allowing steam to escape from the dough during cooking to prevent sogginess. So you can be as gourmet, healthy or creative as you like and the simplicity, convenience and cost will mean you’ll never need to order a take-away pizza again!

You need: • A barbeque with a hood • Pizza stone • A paddle or plate to transfer the pizza dough to the stone.

To get the perfect slice, make sure your piz za cutter is nice and sharp!

What to do: 1. Place the cold pizza stone in the centre of the barbeque’s cook top. It is very important to place the stone in a cold barbeque then pre-heat the barbeque to high. 2. Pre-heat the barbeque for 10-15 minutes with outside burners on high with the hood down. The temperature should be around 200°-245°. 3. Sprinkle stone with semolina. Place your pizza dough (see recipe to the left) on a floured flat plate or paddle before adding your favourite toppings. 4. Tips for fishing fanatics from Whitsunday Fishing World

In September, you should be setting your sights on mackerel as your target fish. Good numbers will be showing up in the usual spots in the Whitsundays like Mackerel Bay, Double Rock, Dolphin Point and Leeper Shoal.

The best tides to fish are the run out tide in Mackerel Bay, Dolphin Point and Leeper Shoal and the run in tide at Double Rock. Try slow trolling ribbonfish and garfish or trolling Halco Laserpro 190 lures in 7m and 2m depths. Use live baiting under a float and high speed jigging. If mackerel show up on the sounder when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in deeper water and trolling ribbon fish, stop the boat and freespool ribbon fish down. Then engage the reel back into gear to bring the ribbon fish to the surface and get ready for the strike!

If jigging, drop the jig into the school and retrieve it at a fast pace back to the surface.

You may have already heard about and know who Ashleigh Stebbeings is, but read on and you’re bound to find out a few things you didn’t know... As our first story to cross international borders, 19 year-old Ashleigh Stebbeings is a world champion barefoot waterskiier who was proudly born and bred in Mackay. After nine years of smashing the competition and world records to boot, Ashleigh took some time out from her busy schedule to chat to us about what’s next. Where are you and what are you doing right now? I am currently living in Winter A Haven, Florida, USA at the World Barefoot Center Ski School. I’m on the World Barefoot Center Elite Team and I’m training and competing for 5 months over the summer.

Anything exciting planned for the rest of the year?

I’ve been competing in American tournaments while I’ve been here but I’m pretty much just spending a few more months at WBC training and preparing for the Australian Tournament season and the World Championships next year in September.

What’s the highlight of your Q career so far? The top highlights would A have to be becoming only the third girl in the world to land an inverted jump in competition and also winning both the Junior Girls and Open Women World Overall Championships. Oh, and winning the International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation Female Barefooter of the Year Award for five years running (from 2005-2009) is pretty cool too!

What’s your favourite event to compete in? Barefoot waterskiing has A three different events; tricks, slalom and jump. My favourite trick to do is the ones I am currently working on which is multiple surface turns. They range from spinning around 180 degrees, up to 720 degrees and they’re really difficult.

What’s your favourite place to hit the water in the Mackay region? A It’d have to be on the Pioneer River out near Mia Mia but we haven’t been able to use it much as a training spot recently because the water level is too low to ski on. Nowadays, I spend most of my time training on the Pioneer River at Marian Weir as well as at Kinchant Dam.

What’s your ultimate career goal? I’m working on breaking the A current Open Womens World Records and ultimately I love to be a professional Barefoot Instructor.

With a big and very supportive family behind him, the boy from Mackay is showing us what he’s got, playing the best footy he can and relishing the opportunity to play alongside and against some of the biggest names out there along the way. Above all, it’s obvious that he’s just proud of where he came from and purely grateful for what he’s been able to achieve. Q

Hey Dane, how’s it going?

Yeah not bad ay.

You’ve been a very busy boy this year. What’s been the highlight so far (but I bet we can guess)? A Yeah you probably can. Obviously making my State of Origin debut for the Queensland is at the top of the list. It’s probably my best achievement ever!

Agreed! Do you remember what you were doing when you found out you’d been selected on the team? Yeah, pretty clearly actually. A I was in a video training session after we (the Storm) lost our round 10 game against the Canberra Raiders who hadn’t been playing very well throughout the season. So we were getting

a grilling from coach Craig Bellamy just before the team announcement was made. The obvious guys were on the list – Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk – but then mysteriously they said we’ve got one more player to announce. The guys all pointed at me but I didn’t believe it and I was totally blown away when they actually did say my name! I got heaps of pats of the back from the boys and yeah, it turned a not so good day into a bloody great day! How did you celebrate being picked for the team? There was no time to! All I A could do was go home, call my family to tell them the news before I had to pack my bags to get on a plane to Queensland the next morning.

Alright, paint us a picture. What’s it like exactly to play in a State or Origin game? The main thing that sticks with me is that it went so fast! I remember in game one, the trainer telling me to ‘hang in there’ and that there was only two minutes left in the first half but it felt like I’d only been playing for a couple of minutes! Playing in the Origin was overwhelming and a proud moment to share with my whole family.

What about playing with the great Darren Lockyer?

It was just an honour to have him playing on my right. He’s got an imposing stature but he’s always happy to give you the time of day. It’s something I’ll never forget, playing with him in his last year before retirement. A bit of bummer that you didn’t get a run-on in the third game. As 18th man, what was that experience like? Yeah it sucked that I didn’t A play but I’m still proud to have been picked. I reckon I had the best seat in the house – on the bench with the boys, right on halfway, 10 metres from all the action. I just wanted to get out there and help the boys so that was tough but I’m grateful that I was given the chance to be there and on the only team to ever win six-in-a-row. I count myself as lucky to have debuted in such a history-making year.

And I gotta tell you having 52,500 people yelling and screaming the roof down is the ultimate adrenalin rush!

How’d you go at the post-match celebrations? We all went back to the A function room at the hotel we stayed at for dinner and after that headed up to the penthouse suite for a few drinks. I lasted until 4:30 but a few of the other boys stayed on til after dawn.

Tell us about how you’re feeling about the NRL season, seeing as we’re so close to the finals now? Feeling pretty confident. A We’re all proud of the young guys who kept the team going when a few of us were out for the origin. They did an awesome job and won all those games. I’m just really proud of where I am, and more importantly where the team is, especially after all of last year’s drama.

You’re referring to the Melbourne Storm salary cap scandal. Tell us a bit how you got through what were surely really tough times? It was heartbreaking and a A very emotional time for the whole team. We went from being on the highest high after winning the 2009 premiership and going over to England to play the World Club Challenge against Leeds, to the absolute lowest low in just a couple of months. We all sat down after we had to say goodbye to about eight blokes from the team and said we could either have a sook or just get on with it even though we weren’t playing for points. So every week we just had to put on the purple jersey and play for each other, for our family and the fans. Simple as that.

I’m feeling pretty confident. We’re all proud of the young guys who kept the team going when a few of us were out for the origin.

Who’s the hardest team to play against in the NRL competition? A I’d have to say Manly because they play a really aggressive and physical game and St. George because they’ve been right up there as the best team for a couple of years.

Who are your sporting heroes? A Wally Lewis. It was a bit overwhelming to actually get to meet him when I joined the Queensland team. Outside of footy it’s Michael Jordan and Mohammed Ali. I like watching documentaries on those guys, it gives me inspiration.

Tell us how you got to where you are. How did you get your start? A Well I was a proud North’s Red Devil from under 7s up to seniors. I also played for the Moranbah Miners (when they won the Mackay and District Rugby League competition in 2004) and the Mackay Sea Eagles under 19 team (who won the Foley Shield in the same year). I got a trial with the Cronulla Sharks under 20s though Barry Gomersall and Steve

Rogers, and was offered a two year contract from that. What else do you hope to achieve in your football career? A I’m just really proud of my achievements so far, especially everything I was able to do before I’d even played 50 first grade games. I’m not setting goals that are too high, I just want to play good footy week in week out and just take it as it comes.

As a kid growing up, he had two teddy bears. One was named ‘Wally Lewis’ and the other ‘Wally Lewis 2’. He’s a mad keen fisherman, although he doesn’t get much time to throw a line in anymore. His favourite fishing spot is Bakers Creek. He is completing a Diploma in Youth Work at Swinburne University and spends some of his time mentoring kids in a hostel in Melbourne. He has a big family and very supportive family base in Mackay including 1 brother, 2 sisters, mum, dad, aunties, uncles, nephews, nieces and heaps of cousins! Since moving to Melbourne, he concedes he’s now become an AFL follower, saying he hated it before he moved to the big smoke down south where he couldn’t get away from it!

I was the guest of a labour hire company at the 2009 Townsville 400. We were on the bus ready to head to the track when a guy ran up to the bus and asked us if we were going to the track. We said yeah, why? And he said ‘I’m racing, can I get a lift?’ It was probably the greatest walk of shame in history! The company I was with said ‘sure, but only if we can put one of our stickers on the car’ and he said yes! So the company pulled out a sticker that was huge and the driver put it on top of his windscreen and for the whole race the commentators were calling his car by the name of the company. It was hilarious and the most cost effective advertising ever.

There was Sapporo on tap (Japanese beer) and everything is prepared right in front of you – it was spectacular.

What’s your next major food goal? I’m looking at expanding A BURP! Into more places and different styles of food. And I’d love to write my own cook book one day...

What is something random not many people know about you? I love mowing the lawn. A When you spend so much time inside in a kitchen, getting outside becomes a luxury and it’s the little things that make you happy!

GETTING THERE, AROUND AND BACK AND AGAIN All major Australian airlines jump the ditch daily, flying predominately into Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. From any of these major cities it is easy to hire a car and travel about at your own pace. If that isn’t your style there a large number of guided tours available with reputable tour companies such as APT. There is also the option of cruising; with some cruise lines leaving from Australia, it is a very convenient all inclusive holiday.

WHEN TO GO New Zealand is breath-taking all year round and when you choose to go depends entirely on what type of adventure you are looking for. The winter high season is from June to August, when there’s plenty of snow. The top summer season is from November to February, and at this time of year the mercury doesn’t climb too far above 25 degrees Celsius (on average). It is wise to avoid the school holidays, which hit their peak from December to early February. This means that hotels are booked out, there are caravans everywhere and flight prices are higher.

What do you do for a crust? I am a Commercial A Helicopter Pilot. I am the owner and Chief Pilot of Whitsunday Helicopters, which is based in Mackay.

What’s your favourite work memory? A It’d have to be flying with the Los Angeles Police Air Wing on night surveillance patrols and high speed car chases.

How did you score such an awesome job? I have always loved aviation. A Having been down several other career paths I finally found myself in a position where I could pursue my dreams and go to Flight School to gain my Pilot’s License. After several years of gaining hours mustering, instructing and flying a multitude of airwork ops (which proved to be invaluable experience in the industry), I purchased Whitsunday Helicopters and have now owned it for over 6 years.

What’s the coolest part of your job? The best thing is getting A to see things from the air that really nobody else sees. Sometimes we can slot in a bit of whale watching while we’re

What’s the best place you’ve been while doing your job? I reckon landing on the A flight deck of the United States Warship USS Germantown recently would have to rate pretty high up there! It was at Shoalwater Bay, north of Rockhampton taking part in “Operation Talisman Sabre” – pretty cool stuff!

How old are you? 22

Where do you work and what do you do? I’ve been working at Saraji mine near Dysart for the past 12 months as an Operator. Basically I drive haul trucks and water carts, and I’m working on getting my graders ticket too. What were you doing with yourself before you got this job? Living in Mackay hairdressing and before that I went on a big overseas holiday with my family. How did you get into this sort of work? I had moved out to Dysart and worked as a hairdresser for a little while and kind of got pushed into applying for a job at the mines by a family member. I called up HR offices every week for six months and they finally gave me a job!

What’s the dirtiest part of the job? Well I get dirty and dusty every day, it’s all part of working in the mines environment! I get a bit oily too when I’m checking the oil levels in the trucks and stuff. I took me about six months to get used to all the dust and dirt but it doesn’t bother me anymore.

These days we are seeing more and more women getting amongst what has always been a man’s job – working at the mines in the Bowen Basin. We sat down with one such sexy female, Kimberley Zunker.

What do you like to do on your days off? I really appreciate my girly time and like getting dressed up and, of course, going shopping! I’m into a bit of exercise and fitness too. Oh and I go to the Austral for dinner and drinks probably at least once every time I’m in town. I love that place! One last sneaky question, are you single? Yes.

What’s something random not many people would Q know about you? That’s a tough one, I’ve never been asked that...well I A went skydiving in Airlie Beach earlier this year, and did the biggest jump we could (14,000 feet) and that was amazing although I had my eyes shut for the free fall part! I also love anything to do with the water – snorkelling, spear fishing, you name it.
