YOUR PERMANENT HOLIDAY HOME MAKE THE MAGIC OF THE RAINFOREST PART OF EVERY DAY Magnificent rainforest, outstanding tourist attractions and the incredible wealth of native wildlife are just some of the things that bring thousands of visitors to the Cairns region every year. And they can be part of your everyday life, when you live at eco@jumrum. This extraordinary residential enclave tucked away in the hinterland at Kuranda lets you experience the ideal combination of eco-conscious living and pure creature comforts. eco@jumrum’s generous sized lots, ranging from 3005m2 to 6894m2 gives you the space to build the home of your dreams, put in a pool, grow a vegetable garden and give the kids plenty of room to explore. SURROUNDED BY THE GLORY OF NATURE The estate’s masterplan has included thoughtful caveats to protect both the old growth rainforest remnants and areas of regenerating rainforest, with part of each block also designated as permanent native vegetation zone. This means the glorious view you can plan on having from the back verandah can never be lost, and will only get better with time. You’ll also be the envy of visiting family and friends when they see the kind of nature walks you can take right in your very own neighbourhood! Imagine waking to the calls of birds each morning in the cool of the sunrise, or watching native animals coming down to drink at the creek. Many of these outstanding blocks even have their own creek frontage, bringing the added music of trickling water and cooling breezes. YOUR DREAM, YOUR CHOICE Each site’s maximum building envelope of 2000m2 gives you the ability to design a home that meets your needs now, or has flexibility for future goals. This might include pavilion style dwellings, with room for guests, or even a bed and breakfast business. You might want a separate home office, or go for the traditional Queenslander with solar panels and rainwater tanks. Your imagination can take flight here! There’s no strata title levies either, or body corporate to deal with. It really is your own, personal patch of paradise. A HAVEN THAT’S EXCEPTIONALLY CONVENIENT The thriving cosmopolitan village of Kuranda is just minutes away, with its artisans and craft shops, groceries, professional services, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Right across the road from eco@jumrum is the Kuranda Recreation Centre for sports and a local social life. You’re also only 30 minutes away from the employment hub of Cairns, with its International Airport and easy day tripping distance of the Atherton Tablelands, Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree and all the other attractions that make the FNQ region a world-renowned destination.

AUSTRALIA DAY AUSSIE, AUSSIE , AUSSIE! OI! OI! OI! AUSTRALIA

GUY SEBASTIAN

THE FLIGHT CENTRE TRAVEL EXPO

MACKAY, TOWNSVILLE AND CAIRNS

MACKAY

26TH JANUARY 2016

7TH FEBRUARY 2016

26TH JANUARY 2016

Australia Day is celebrated on January 26 each year and commemorates the first landing in Australia by Captain Arthur Phillip.

In January 2016, Guy Sebastian heads out on his first regional tour in more than 2 years! With a new hit single set to be released in November 2015, Guy will be showcasing new songs from his forthcoming album and performing all his hits.

The best way to follow up the Christmas and New Year holiday period is by planning your next trip!

Most Australians consider January 26 with national pride, flying the Australian flag from businesses, homes, cars and even their babies. They attend festivals, fireworks, community and sporting events or gather for family barbecues at homes, parks or on the beach. The name “Australia” was first suggested by Captain Matthew Flinders, an English navigator and surveyor. He was the first explorer to sail entirely around Australia and identify it as a continent. “Australia” means “southern” in Latin. The continent was officially christened “Australia” in 1824. Anyone is welcome to join in with the festivities of the day, all you have to do is dress in the Aussie Colours of yellow and green or blue and red then shout the words ‘Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!’ As loud as you can!

The “You...Me...Us” Tour will see Guy, Australia’s most successful male artist of all time, performing in a new intimate format like you’ve never seen him before. This is an event not to be missed.

The Flight Centre Travel Group is proud to present a series of travel expos within Australia each year and this year they are coming to Mackay. The Travel Expo is visiting 13 cities across Australia from 17 January to 6 March 2016. The event is free to enter and open to the public between 10am and 4pm. Get advice from experts, amazing insider knowledge and free travel presentations.

Queensland

Our top picks for relocating to the sunshine state!

PORT OF AIRLIE - Marina Living The Whitsundays have long been a tropical playground for visitors worldwide. The azure water, sparkling beaches and close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef make it a highly soughtafter relaxation destination. Despite being regarded as one of the most beautiful locations on earth, the opportunity to live on the waterfront currently exists at a fraction of the cost of waterfront addresses in other Australian cities. Port of Airlie’s, The Cove, was launched in late 2014, offering savvy investors a rare opportunity to realise the dream of owning waterfront land at an affordable price. Of the 23 land sites originally offered, only five lots remain, all valued under $1 million. This is a rare price tag for waterfront locations in Australia. 1800 676 526 | Port of Airlie Sales Centre & Marina 13 The Cove Road, Airlie Beach QLD www.portofairlie.com.au

However the advantages don’t stop at the view. Limited opportunities exist to compliment your waterfront properties with your own 90+ year leased marina berth. Port of Airlie caters for both monohull and multihull boats, ranging in size from 10m to 50m. For those who prefer to leave the navigating to the experts, Cruise Whitsundays operate from their own state of the art maritime terminal at the Port of Airlie, giving residents ease of access to the Great Barrier Reef Airport on Hamilton Island, the island resorts, worldfamous Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef. This waterfront lifestyle opportunity at The Cove can be summed up in one word: location. Absolute waterfront with incredible Whitsunday vistas all less than a quick 10 minute walk through Port of Airlie main marina precinct to the main street of Airlie Beach, the heart of a vibrant tropical village. 2015 saw the renaming of The Boathouse Apartments to Mantra Boathouse Apartments with Mantra Group’s acquisition of Outrigger Australia. Major brands occupy retail space in The Boathouse, including Billabong and Seafolly, Coffee Club as well as exclusive local dining, retail and tour operators such as Denman Cellars, Walters Lounge, Aimer and Ocean Dynamics. Retail opportunities are still available at the Port of Airlie, for an investor seeking a vibrant seachange. Alan Robinson, Port of Airlie’s onsite sales manager, comments on how the worldclass development has added to the visitor

appeal of Airlie Beach. “The Whitsundays is a worldwide recognised destination and we are proud of the progress made on Port of Airlie and believe it provides the town of Airlie Beach, the cosmopolitan international atmosphere and facilities that showcases what our region has to offer. To secure your slice of waterfront paradise contact Alan or Lesley on 1800 676 526, visit portofairlie.com or call into the sales office, open daily at the Port of Airlie. Your tropical adventure doesn’t have to end with this holiday.

MIRAGE - Resort Living That Whitsunday holiday feeling. The exhilaration you feel after a day snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef. The feeling of pure relaxation as you lay under a palm tree, where minutes don’t matter and time seemingly stands still. But what if the holiday didn’t have to end. What if this was your home? Picture perfect sunset views from your balcony, gazing at the azure water from your private plunge pool. What if we then told you that this lifestyle could cost less than a three bedroom home in a retreated suburb of Sydney or Melbourne. 1300 088 988 | Box A, 11 Altmann Ave, Cannonvale, Queensland 4802, Australia www.miragewhitsundays.com.au

Sounds like a dream? You’re not imagining it, but it is a Mirage. Mirage Whitsundays is one of the most exclusive addresses in Queensland, offering absolute waterfront positioning and a high standard of luxury fittings. Not only is it the newest residential investment opportunity in the Whitsundays, it is undoubtedly the most luxurious, providing uninterrupted turquoise ocean views to every villa, townhouse and penthouse and to most apartments. Mirage properties are the only ones in Airlie Beach to offer a direct waterfront placement with private plunge pools and private garages. The contemporary design maximises the tropical feeling of indoor / outdoor living while utilising state of the art technology and luxury appliances with elegant stone and timber finishes throughout. Residents enjoy lush established tropical gardens as well as 24/7 on-site security and management. Two magnificent lagoon swimming pools are also on-site for use, and soon the resort complex will include a fine dining restaurant, beauty spa and gym facilities. As well as the conveniences of Mirage’s resort, residents soon become accustomed to the ease of life at Airlie Beach. The village CBD is a mere 15 minute stroll for a world-class selection of restaurants and cafes. A public boat ramp is located beside the resort for ease of visiting the Whitsun-

16

day islands. Abell Point Marina, a popular waterfront dining destination, is less than 1km from Mirage. For more information, visit miragewhitsundays.com. au or phone Anne-Marie Oxley on 07 4948 1940. Inspection available by appointment. Embrace vacation euphoria and live like you’re on holiday, at Mirage Whitsundays.

Sail into Abell Point Marina for the Clipper Race Stopover. 13th – 18th January 2016 Experience the Whitsundays this summer from the beautifully redeveloped Abell Point Marina for the welcome of the Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race – Airlie Beach stopover. THINGS TO DO CAIRNS The only place on earth where two World Heritage-listed areas meet. Welcome to tropical North Queensland, where pristine islands, colourful coral, glorious cascades, lush rainforest and a diverse outback are all waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re looking to kick back and enjoy serenity, trek through tropical rainforests or go on an underwater adventure, the tropical north has it all. When on vacation, it’s not so much finding something to do, but deciding what shouldn’t be missed. Energised by its natural surrounds, Cairns is the vibrant city in the heart of the tropics. Swim at the Esplanade lagoon, sample local produce at a farmer’s market, meander to the waterfront cafes at the marina or let the waves lull you into relaxation on a golden beach. Along with boasting beautiful landscapes and convenient access to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is also renowned for its great nightlife and adventure activities, making it a backpacker mecca. Take the coastal road north and soak in the relaxed atmosphere of Palm Cove before arriving in the resort village of Port Douglas. This coastal getaway location boasts glorious beaches, stretching from waves to rainforest in a combination of inspiring scenery and welcoming warmth. Continue further north to Cape Tribulation, where the World Heritage areas of the Daintree Rainforest and Great Barrier Reef meet, or as some describe it, where heaven meets earth. Head west to the Gulf Savannah, Queensland’s outback by the sea, where breathtaking gorges, ancient lava tubes, gem fossicking and a pioneering history await discovery. In complete contrast to the rugged outback, the Atherton Tablelands is rich and fertile, dotted with gourmet taste experiences and beautiful natural waterfalls. Drive the southern waterfall circuit, including the fairy-tale setting of Millaa Millaa Falls, then experience the village in the rainforest, Kuranda, near the region’s largest waterfall, the Barron Falls, most spectacular in the wet season. A trip to the tropical north isn’t complete without spending time on the world’s largest coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef. Day trips depart from Cairns, Port Douglas and Cape Tribulation offering a selection of snorkeling, diving and pontoon experiences. Take your time and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef by staying on Fitzroy or Green Islands, where the reef is at your door. riverboat cruise. Getting to and from Kuranda is part of the fun. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway traverses the McAlister Range and stretches for 7.5km. Glide above the rainforest canopy for an unforgettable experience, stopping at two locations along the journey to walk among the rainforest. The Kuranda Scenic Railway winds its way through dense rainforest, past steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls, for a relaxing alternative to return to Cairns.

4. Stay on an island on the Great Barrier Reef Snorkelling or diving the Great Barrier Reef is a must-do experience. Choosing to stay at one of the Tropical North’s glorious islands extends that experience for as long as you choose. Both Green and Fitzroy Island’s offer a combination of breathtaking scenery, tropical beaches, lush rainforest and relaxing opulence. The surrounding coral reefs are part of the Great Barrier Reef, making exploration in the shallow, sheltered water easier, especially for first-time snorkellers. Browse boutique island shops, take a dip in a resort pool and enjoy first-class cocktails and cuisine as the sun sets.

5. Adrenalin-pumping adventure While most people associate the Tropical North with sunshine and relaxation, there are a plethora of adventure activities on offer. Get wet and wild with white water rafting on the Barron or Tully Rivers, or stay completely dry and bungy jump in the rainforest. 20 minutes from Cairns is home to Australia’s one and only bungy tower and giant minjin Jungle Swing. Skydive over the rainforest and the reef, or glide graciously over the Atherton Tablelands in a hot air balloon.

6. Cruise in croc-infested waters

With an abundance of mesmerising marine life and colourful coral which bloom from the ocean floor, it’s easy to see why this World Heritage site is a must for visitors. Choose from a half-day trip departing Cape Tribulation or opt to venture to the outer Barrier Reef from Port Douglas or Cairns. Choose a tour which includes an underwater observatory and a semi-submersible to see the reef from different perspectives. Relax on the sand of a cay or dive to spectacular depths.

Visit Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures to get up close to these amazing prehistoric reptiles. Walk the boardwalk to discover a range of wildlife, including cassowaries, snakes and koalas, then take a lagoon cruise to watch crocodiles leap out of the water for their food. The big croc experience allows visitors to feed a crocodile themselves. Relax at the lagoon-side restaurant with cool refreshments and an assortment of food for lunch. For the chance to see a crocodile in its natural environment, take a Daintree River cruise from the small town of Daintree, nestled in the rainforest.

2. Trek Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest

7. Walk through the Undarra lava tubes

The Daintree Rainforest is a World Heritage area, one of the few places in the world where you can step from the cooling forest canopy onto a sundrenched beach. This ancient treasure is over one hundred million years old and is considered to be one of the world’s most significant tropical rainforests. Walk through the Daintree rainforest, spot crocodiles on a Daintree River cruise, zip-line through rainforest canopy or relax on an uninhabited beach. Stay in accommodation at Cape Tribulation for a true immersion experience.

Visit Undara Volcanic National Park, featuring the world’s largest and longest lava tubes. Access to the lava tubes is by tour only, with several options to suit all visitors. Explore natural geological wonders, fossick for gems and enjoy the comforts and hospitality of a unique outback setting.

1. Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef

3. Glide in the Skyrail to Kuranda Kuranda is known as the village in the rainforest. The main attraction is the region’s largest waterfall, the spectacular Barron Falls. Other places to visit in Kuranda include the Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld, Koala Gardens, Australian Venom Zoo or book a Kuranda

Warm and homey B&B’s and interactive farm-stays are scattered throughout Atherton Tablelands making it easy for you to stay and discover longer.

Ocean Safari Cape Tribulation WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR? It was unlike any snorkelling tour I had ever experienced. The reefs chosen by Ocean Safari are in pristine condition, with an array of colourful coral which was abundant in marine life. Not only did I swim with a kaleidoscope of tropical fish, but I saw giant clams, large crayfish, eagle rays and small reef sharks. The highlight was swimming with a large sea turtle, a magical experience.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED? The Ocean Safari check in office is also home to the Turtle Rock Café and Jungle Lodge, in the tropical Cape Tribulation rainforest, on Cape Tribulation Road. Getting to Cape Tribulation is part of the tropical north adventure. From Port Douglas, it is a 45 minute drive to the Daintree River, where you drive your car onto a cable ferry to cross the river. The road then meanders for another hour through lush Daintree Rainforest to spectacular lookout points and glorious tropical beaches before arriving at Cape Tribulation.

WHY CHOOSE THIS TOUR? Cape Tribulation is where two world heritage areas meet, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The opportunity to experience both simultaneously is a once in a lifetime experience for many visitors. The Ocean Safari vessel only takes a maximum of 25 passengers on each tour. The smaller groups allow you to enjoy the tropical paradise away from larger crowds for a more exclusive and informative experience. Due to the close proximity of Cape Tribulation to parts of the Great Barrier Reef, it only takes 25 minutes of travel

to reach the first snorkelling site! This means more time in the water experiencing the beauty of nature and less time on the boat. It also means you can fully experience the wonders of the reef in half a day. The guides are friendly and informative, making the entire trip an unforgettable adventure.

WHAT DOES THE TOUR INCLUDE? The tour includes a complimentary pick up and drop off service from Cape Tribulation accommodation to the Ocean Safari vessel. You are then transported to two different reef sites, where you can choose to join the informative guides on a snorkelling tour, or explore on your own. You get at least two hours of time in the water to explore the reefs. All snorkelling equipment is provided and prescription masks are available to hire. You also receive personalised snorkel instruction as well as reef interpretation and eco appreciation presentations to learn about the surroundings. Drinks, snacks and underwater cameras are available for purchase on the boat.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND? I already have! A friend of mine is travelling to Cairns soon and I convinced her to extend her stay to explore Cape Tribulation and do this tour. It’s a beautiful part of Australia, an experience not to be missed and with Ocean Safari recently winning the Queensland Tourism Award for the best Tour and Transport Operator in the state, you can’t beat that!

SWEETBRIDGE LARDER ON GREGORY STREET

WHERE Just off the Strand in Townsville is Gregory Street and it is lined with restaurants and bars. The street is a hive of activity and there is one quirky little café that is especially worth a visit. Sweetbridge Larder is rustic and quaint with a modern twist. A vibrant café with old world charm. I called in to escape the heat on the street and was immediately greeted and shown to a cool, quiet table inside.

WHAT YOU’LL FIND THERE Open for breakfast and lunch, Gregory Street’s little gem is an exciting project for the new owners who have always dreamt about opening a café business. They have already established a booming early morning coffee trade for locals and pride themselves on their fast, efficient service. I tried the avocado on toast and when the plate arrived I was amazed to see half an avocado on my plate! The ciabatta bread was rustic and delicious, the avocado was soft and green and came with cracked pepper, lemon and olive oil. It was a delicious start to the day. Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that make you smile most! I matched my avocado on toast with a Belgium chocolate frappe for $18. They offer either avocado on toast or bacon and eggs on toast with a coffee for $15 and with a smoothie or frappe for $18. My frappe was pure indulgence. It came with whipped cream on top and the Belgium chocolate was deadly delicious!

WHY WE LOVE IT You can tell as soon as you walk in that Sweetbridge Larder is a much loved café. The staff are friendly, helpful and there is full table service. The café is close to the action on the Strand so you can watch all the action from their street-side dining area. Alternatively if you want a cool quiet moment, you can choose to sit inside. The café has a personal feel. The sort of place where they remember your face and, within a few days, even your order!

REEF is a major exhibition and the culmination of a year-long collaborative project between a number of Townsville organisations investigating and celebrating the Great Barrier Reef. Projects throughout the year have included the monthly Weave the Reef | Love the Reef community workshop series. Facilitated by the Fibres and Fabrics Association Inc. and artist Marion Gaemers, the free workshops have guided members of the community in creating sculptural coral reef forms from recycled materials, much of it marine debris. The works created through the workshops will be included in the exhibition REEF as a large installation.

Steffen Dam’s work Specimen Jar features in the exhibition and evidences the Danish artists mastery of the glass medium. Of his practice, the artist states, “I have been working with glass for 25 years. Initially I was blowing glass, but over the years casting, grinding and techniques from other crafts emerged.” “My aim is to describe the world as I see it. One could also say to describe what’s not tangible and understandable with our everyday senses. My cylinders contain nothing that exists in the ocean, my specimens are plausible but not from this world, my plants are only to be found in my compost heap, and my flowers are still unnamed.” The exhibition will provide an opportunity to learn about the exhibited artists and their varied practices, plentiful fun reef facts, as well as the environmental issues currently facing this precious ecosystem.

Kangaroos Iconically Australian, the bouncy kangaroo is recognized worldwide as coming from the “land downunder.” Along with the emu, the kangaroo features on the Australian coat of arms. This is because it is one of the few animals in the world that has difficulty moving backward, so it was selected as a symbol of progress, always bounding forward. Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary makes it easy for visitors to have an unforgettable kangaroo experience. The sanctuary’s kangaroos are not in enclosures. They have the freedom of 11 hectares of natural habitat to roam among. Generations of kangaroos have been born at the sanctuary, learning from a young age that visitors often have bags of food to hand-feed them with. Bags of seed to feed the kangaroos and ducks can be purchased when you arrive at Billabong Sanctuary. The kangaroos aren’t shy. They may give you a friendly nudge with their nose if they think you have seed to share and will happily bound up to you to munch the seed from your hand. Billabong Sanctuary has two types of kangaroos roaming the habitat, the Eastern Grey, which is the common species found in Queensland, and the Red Kangaroo, which is the largest species of kangaroo. As you interact with the kangaroos at the sanctuary, you may notice something unusual hanging out of the front pouch of some of them. This is because female kangaroos carry their babies in their front pouch for up to nine months! By this stage, the babies, known as Joeys, can become quite large. Sometimes you may see a head poking out of the pouch, or sometimes it may just be a foot! DID YOU KNOW? Kangaroos can have three babies developing at one time. One can be mature and ready to leave the pouch, another tiny one can be developing in the pouch and one embryo can be in pause mode. This is because the females have the unique ability to delay the birth of their baby until the previous joey has left the pouch. There are four teats in the pouch and each provides different milk for the different stages of development. Kangaroos are the largest marsupial surviving on Earth. They use their large, muscular tail for balance, often when they are “boxing” against other kangaroos, or when moving slowly they use it in place of a third leg. DID YOU KNOW? Kangaroos have excellent hearing and can swivel their large ears in all directions to pick up sounds. While you are at the sanctuary, watch how their ears move in response to unusual noise. Kangaroos in the wild are most active at night. However the kangaroos at Billabong Sanctuary are active during the day, so any time of day is a great time to visit. Bounce into Billabong Sanctuary, where nature is wild!

DID YOU KNOW –Kangaroos can have three babies developing at one time

Billabong Sanctuary Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and, to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please and, as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m. At wildlife encounters, you can hold a koala or hug a wombat and have a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile. Wildlife talks and interpretative experiences feature all day. Don’t miss the most popular feeding show, where the sanctuary’s largest crocodile, Bully, will leap from the water in an amazing show of strength to take a snap at his lunch. Hear the tremendous jaws snap shut as Bully lunges for food, fed by one of the experienced rangers. Bully is 4.5m long and weighs in excess of 500kgs. To see him in action is an unforgettable nature experience. Take the opportunity to feed one of the snappy freshwater crocodiles, only $10 to experience the action. At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform you on many misconceptions people may have about different animals. One of the most misunderstood native animals in Australia is the dingo. See a different side to this magnificent creature and then pose for a photo and pat the friendly dingoes. Summer is the season when estuarine crocodiles are at their most impressive. It is nesting time, with courtship displays amongst the Billabong’s breeding crocodiles, and also when the crocodile are most active at the feeding shows. At the talks you will learn how to stay safe when visiting North Qld Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

Magnetic Island is 8 km of shore from Townsville, a quick 20 minute journey by ferry. The island is 52km2, of which 70% is national park. It is a stunning natural paradise with a relaxing tropical lifestyle. Just over 2000 people live on the island all year round and they are welcoming to everyone, always happy to stop and have a chat.

HISTORY

GO WILD AT BUNGALOW BAY KOALA VILLAGE

Magnetic Island is called Yunbenun by the Wulgurukaba people who are the Traditional Aboriginal Owners of the island and lived there for thousands of years. In 1770, Captain James Cook sailed passed on his ship, the Endeavour, and, while he was there, his compass was affected by a strange magnetic force on the island which is why it is now called ‘Magnetic Island’.

Get up close to nature at Bungalow Bay Koala Village. This compact wildlife park offers more hands-on experiences than many larger parks, minus the large crowds and expensive petting fees. Hold a baby crocodile, cuddle a koala, feed a black cockatoo, handle lizards and turtles and drape snakes across your shoulders. Make your wildlife experience even more memorable by enjoying a Champagne bush tucker breakfast with the koalas. Breakfast is held each Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. Bookings are essential. Otherwise, take part in one of three daily wildlife presentations held by rangers, who are island residents and experts in the resident wildlife.

GEOGRAPHY Magnetic Island was part of the Australian mainland until 7500 years ago when sea levels rose cutting it off. Magnetic Island is composed mostly of granite, the result of a volcanic force that pushed molten rock up to the earth’s surface 275 million years ago. Much of the volcanic rock has eroded away, however, the underlying granite has decomposed into fault lines and created the distinctive granite boulders and rocky headlands we see today. The island is famed for its untouched natural beauty. There are 23 bays and beaches, some of which are only accessible by foot or boat. Mount Cook is the highest point on the island and it is fringed by magnificently tangled rainforest jungle, vine forests, eucalypt woods and emerald green hoop pine trees.

Phone (07) 4778 5577 to book your Koala Village experience or visit www. bungalowbay.com.au to find out more.

GETTING AROUND

RIDE BAREBACK INTO THE OCEAN

The wonderfully winding scenic roads are great fun to drive on and the best way to explore the island. Each bend reveals a different jaw-dropping bay or landscape to marvel at and it is all you can do to concentrate on the road ahead. Most places are suitable for any vehicle, however, there are a couple of 4 wheel drive only tracks, one to Radical Bay which is stunning. The Topless Car Company rent our bright pink topless cars which are a fun and unique way of exploring the island, with the wind rushing through your hair, open-air seats giving you a real taste of the island.

Experience the serenity of horseback riding on beautiful Magnetic Island. Trek from Horseshoe Bay Ranch to the crystal clear water of Horseshoe Bay. Unsaddle your horse and ride bareback across the sand into the cooling water, enjoying a rejuvenating dip with your horse. Two hour rides are scheduled twice per day, leaving at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Each ride takes you from the bush to the beach where you have the opportunity to ride bareback into the water. The well-schooled horses are suitable for every level of ability, including pony rides for children. Phone (07) 4778 5109 or visit www.horseshoebayranch.com.au.

owen beautiful

Breathtaking beaches, the Big Mango and the Bowen Jetty, find out why Bowen is one of Queensland’s most desirable holiday picks.

HISTORICAL

As North Queensland’s oldest town, Bowen is brimming with history, especially at the Bowen Historical Museum on Gordon Street. Discover the early geological surrounds of the district, followed by early indigenous inhabitance to the early European settlers. The Gothenburg is one of the most famous shipwrecks on the Queensland Coast with the loss of more than 100 lives, with relics from the wreck on display in the museum. The Bowen Aerodrome is home to a Catalina museum, commemorating the involvement Bowen had as a base for Catalina flying boats during World War II. The museum contains five dioramas all built on 1/72 scale. Even a gentle meander through the streets will unearth interesting locations. Known as the mural capital of Australia, Bowen has more than 25 intricately painted mural sites. They depict a diverse history from the town’s early settlement, involvement with World War II to present day industry. You can find a list of mural sites by visiting the Bowen Information Centre at the Big Mango. From the ‘Bowenwood’ water tank to the historical CBD buildings, enjoy discovering beautiful Bowen in the northern Whitsundays region.

BOWEN JETTY Not far from the foreshore on Santa Barbara Parade, visit Bowen’s famous jetty. In 2007 Bowen was used to portray 1930s Darwin in Baz Luhrmann’s film Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. The Jetty was heavily featured in the movie.

BIG MANGO On Bowen’s southern entrance on the Bruce Highway, keep an eye out for the famous ‘Big Mango’ at the Bowen Visitor Information Centre. An excellent photo opportunity at 10 metres tall, this mango statue is indeed the largest in the world! Bowen is famous for growing large numbers of juicy, golden mangoes. Ask at the Information Centre for the 100% bowen mango sorbet – it is a totally healthy, utterly delicious treat

MULLER’S LAGOON Mullers Lagoon is 23.57 hectares of picturesque parkland and botanical gardens in the centre of town. The Lagoon is a hot spot for birdwatchers with 176 species of bird life inhabiting the area. A great location for the family, it features a playground, picnic area, public toilets and free barbecues. For those with a green thumb the lagoon is home to a vast array of native and exotic plant life, from Aloes, Adeniums and Agaves from Africa and America, to Cycas and Pachypodiums from Madagascar.

amazing

irlie Beach

Airlie Beach is the hub of the Whitsunday region, a renowned holiday destination and gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Previously a backpacker town, a recent 22 million dollar face-lift has boosted the little town and put it on the map as a holiday destination for any budget and any type tourist. There is a lively main-street, lined with restaurants and bars, a huge public lagoon swimming pool overlooking the Coral Sea and first-class marinas attracting a vibrant yachting community. Airlie Beach is also the best place to book your boat tour to the Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven Beach.

Must do’s GO SAILING OF COURSE!

The Whitsundays is known around the world for its beautiful sailing experiences, Whitehaven Beach and the fringing reefs, perfect for snorkeling. You can choose from a plethora of day trips, overnight sailing adventures or even hire your own boat. Flick through this magazine and you will see more information about the various tours on offer.

SWIM AT CEDAR CREEK FALLS Swim within a rock amphitheatre at the base of Cedar Creek waterfall, a large pristine pool which is a local favourite for swimming. With the increased rainfall at this time of year you might be lucky enough to see the waterfall running which is a spectacular sight. Remember to take your insect repellant as mosquitoes can be found in concentrated numbers in the bush. You can find Cedar Creek Falls on Saltwater Creek Road, off Conway Beach Road.

SATURDAY MARKETS Every Saturday as the sun comes up Airlie Beach foreshore comes alive. Stall holders from around the region gather to put on a lively market show. Mango sorbet fresh from Bowen, farmers selling their delicious homegrown vegetables, stunning Australian opals, nautical giftware, homemade jewelry and fashion, this market has you browsing for hours. Buskers are playing music, there is sandcastle art and you can even get a massage at a bargain $20 for 20 minutes!

SLEEP ON THE GREAT BARRIER REEF There can be fewer greater experiences offered in the world than the chance to sleep under the stars, 40 nautical miles from shore, on the Great Barrier Reef! Snorkel and swim from Cruise Whitsunday’s pontoon on the reef, and then enjoy the solitude of the setting sun over the reef as you, and only a few others, sleep under the stars, lulled to sleep by the sounds of the Coral Sea.

AIRLIE BEACH LAGOON The Airlie Beach Lagoon is situated right in the centre of Airlie Beach and has become the focal point of the area. When you want to meet someone you meet “at the Lagoon”. If you want a great day of relaxation with no admission fee, “spend a day at the

Lagoon”. And the most rewarding thing of all is that the people of the Whitsundays have taken the Lagoon to their heart as much as tourists and visitors. The lagoon is surrounded by grassy knolls, perfect for a spot of sunbathing, or finding a quiet spot in the shade to read a book. The sandy beach area at one end provides a safe stinger free environment for the children to play in the shallows and the lagoon is surrounded by landscaped gardens for added aesthetic appeal. A children’s pool is situated at one end.

HIRE A JET SKI A jet ski has to be one of the most fun things to do in the Whitsundays – you are in control of your own machine, able to go as fast or as slow as you like and venture into places you wouldn’t be able to see on a bigger vessel.

Ocean Dynamics WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR? WHAT TYPE OF VESSELS ARE ON OFFER? Ocean Dynamics is a totally flexible tour company that takes the time to listen to what you want and custom design a tour that suits you. You can decide between private charters, where you get the whole boat to yourselves, or a small intimate boat tour with a maximum of 8 other guests. They offer a sunset cruise, dinner cruise or an all-day beach and snorkel tour. We opted for a full-day private family charter and were pleased to discover that we could decide on most of the itinerary ourselves! We had the whole boat to ourselves and were in the expert hands of the crew who were friendly, well-informed and gave us 5 star service.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED? Ocean Dynamics boat tours & Jet Ski tours operate from Port of Airlie Marina. They are the only dedicated tour booking office down at Port of Airlie. They offer boutique services in their brand new outlet where, in additional to Ocean Dynamics tours and charters, you can also book a wide range of tours from many Whitsunday operators (including but not limited to Cruise Whitsunday, Ocean Rafting, Air Whitsunday and a whole lot more) in a relaxed atmosphere. They even have a children’s area where children can play while their parents are booking a tour. All boat tours can pick up and drop off guests from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, O&O Hayman Island and Daydream Island (prices vary depending on departure point.)

There are two luxury vessels to choose from; Ocean Free, which is a 60 foot luxury Maritimo motor cruiser which can take up to 26 guests and has air-conditioning throughout. The second is Ocean Escape which is a more intimate experience carrying a maximum of 8 guests. This boat is a fast and sporty power catamaran, a great way to see the best of the Whitsundays in a small group environment. Ocean Dynamics also offer a range of Jet Ski tours departing from Port of Airlie marina. They do a fabulous eco-tour to South Molle Island, where you get to spend some time on the secluded beach and enjoy a guided bush-walk through the national park which has spectacular views.

WHAT DOES YOUR TOUR INCLUDE? Stinger suits and snorkels are included, so are shade tents which can be set-up on the beach. Private charters are priced on an individual basis and any kind of catering can be packaged in for one set price. The crew’s knowledgeable and informative talks give you a running dialogue of where you are and the environment you are visiting which is a very nice touch.

Wings Adventure Park Mini 4WD Tour

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS TOUR?

WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR? None stop action, but seriously the entire tour was brilliant. This is the newest and largest tourist attraction on the mainland in the Whitsundays. The intelligence that has gone into the master planning of the entire park is evident. The minute you jump off the tour bus, you just know you’re in for an awesome experience! The man made challenge area was so much fun with obstacles, logs, hills, corners, tyres to bounce on and ramps to play with. The absolute highlight is the mud pit challenge area as the finale. It’s where the real mud action takes place... a circuit track to burn through get wet and covered in mud!

WHERE DID YOU GO? The courtesy bus picked us up at Base Backpackers in Airlie Beach. The 47o Acre Wings Adventure Park is a 40 minute drive into the Whitsunday Hinterland. Once you arrive at the park you are given a quick intro about the facilities and the driver briefing takes place. Everyone jumps into their own little all terrain vehicle and starts their engines, setting off on a scenic adventure tour through classic sub tropical bushland... You’ll encounter gullies swarming with butterflies, drive through dry creek beds, climb hills and stop at a look out that gives you a birds eye view of the entire hinterland back to the Whitsunday coastline in the distance. If you are lucky you might spot one of the locals, the park is home to kangaroos, wallabies and koalas hiding in the gum trees!

This is simply a MUST DO experience for any visitor to Whitsundays that is looking for half a day of action on the mainland. The owners of this brand new park have a winning formula. The tracks are so well thought out to maximise the natural hilly landscape to provide maximum fun! Unlike most other tours you’ll do on a holiday, this is an all weather tour. The Adventure Park would be an entirely different experience of mud action on a wet day!

WHAT DID YOUR TOUR INCLUDE? The half day included courtesy pick up/drop off in Airlie Beach. On the way to the park they play a great info video explaining the action, tour features, safety and driver training. You select your helmet/goggles and gear up to jump on board your mean ATV machine! The tour is fully guided with constant monitoring of your activity in the park. At no point on this tour was I scared. It was a day of grinning from ear to ear and constant laughter.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND? Absolutely! I can’t think of one single friend or family member of mine that would not LOVE this tour. Blokes are a given but girls don’t dismiss this as you will have just as much fun. It’s suitable for all ages above 8. On the day I went out, there was such a diverse mix of tourists, some young Aussie honeymooners, some Chinese travel agents and a dad on holidays from Townsville having a day off without the ‘Mrs & little kids’. I will be raving about this tour for a long time!

Derwent Hunter WHAT MAKES THIS TOUR UNIQUE?

WHY CHOOSE THIS TOUR?

It is an authentic experience on a 90ft real timber tall-ship, handcrafted in the 1940’s with Tasmanian timber and made by a famous Tasmanian shipwright. As soon as you are on-board you can sense the history of the vessel. The set-up of the whole tour is dedicated to its passengers. You can learn how to hoist the sails, listen to engaging eco talks and sit in a shaded area of the deck with no other sound than the gentle lapping of the water as the vessel’s sails gently guide you forward. It is simply majestic!

WHERE DOES THE TOUR GO? With Derwent Hunter you can get away from the crowds. The experienced crew show you the little known areas of the Whitsundays, un-touched natural beauty that takes your breath away. The tour crosses the Whitsunday Passage and heads north taking you to Bali Hai for a snorkel on the stunning fringing reef. After which you are dropped at Langford Spit, a long sand-spit that has 360 degree views and makes you feel like you are standing on water.

56

It gets back to the true nature of a genuine sailing experience. It is about the voyage and the simple beauty of the Whitsunday Islands. The feeling of serenity as you sail on a classic sailing vessel with no motor, just sail power, is truly special. Add to this the friendly nature of all the crew on-board plus the informative eco talks then you have a tour made in heaven.

• •

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TOUR? A lesson in how to hoist the sails, a description of the history of the vessel plus an eco-tour to nourish the mind as well as the soul. A 2 hour snorkeling/beach time experience, where guests are tendered to shore to snorkel directly form the beach making it great for all ages and abilities. Morning tea and a delicious buffet lunch is included, so is all your snorkel equipment and stinger suit hire. There is also a licensed bar onboard so you can enjoy a glass of wine or ice cold beer with complimentary cheese and fruit platter on your way back to port. Ask about the Chill and Thrill package which gives you an exclusive two day-trips for one set price. Spend one day on a fast thrill ride to Whitehaven Beach with Ocean rafting and a second day on Derwent Hunter exploring the lesser known areas in serenity.

Providence V WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR?

It has to be the intimate and relaxing experience of being on board a tallship from the bygone era. Providence V was built from North Queensland timber from the last of the Tully rainforest. She is a unique vessel, an American bluenose, a replica of the Grand Banks fishing boats that once plied the waters off Newfoundland and, in 1992, she starred in a Hollywood movie.

WHAT TYPE OF TOUR DOES PROVIDENCE V OFFER? The Blue Pearl/Langford Reef tour which departs Tues/Thurs/Fri and Saturday. This takes guests to the lesser known locations in the Whitsundays. You can commune with the local Maori Wrass at Blue Pearl Bay, sail to Langford Reef where you can swim with turtles and enjoy a picnic lunch under umbrellas, served on the Langford sandspit. If you ask nicely, the crew will even bring you a drink from their licensed bar brought straight to your towel! The Whitehaven/Dumbbell Island sail departs Sunday/Mon/Wednesday. You can spend an hour and a half on the iconic Whitehaven Beach, photograph the panorama from the top of the Hill

Inlet lookout and lunch on board before heading to Dumbbell Island for a snorkel teeming with fish and coral. You can also combine their two hallmark daytrips in a two-day sail package. The Sunset Cruise for those early evening lovers. Enjoy sunset in style with a two-hour sail across Pioneer Bay. Complimentary glass of bubbles and nibbles included. Alternatively why not indulge in a two-hour sail and dinner package where you can choose between dinner at Coral Sea Resort Clippers Restaurant or Peppers Tides Restaurant? Providence is also available for private charters, Christmas parties and weddings upon request.

WHAT DOES THE TOUR INCLUDE? Both day sails include morning tea/lunch/afternoon fruit or fruit and cheese platter (Whitehaven), snorkelling gear, stinger suits (in season) and chilled water on deck. They also have a fully licensed bar on-board. The sunset cruise includes a glass of champagne and nibbles.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND? Yes. It is an intimate sailing experience on a beautiful vessel from a bygone era.

taste buds take your taste buds on a journey in the whitsundays Fish D’vine & Rum Bar, airlie beach where Fish D’vine & The Rum Bar are in a landmark location at 303 Shute Harbour Road. It’s around the bend on your way out to Shute Harbour just before the Port of Airlie Precinct. The venue has a global reputation for its seafood and is sporting one of the best Rum Bars in Australia - with over 500 rums to choose from!

what you'll find there You are on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef. It’s literally a supermarket of delights out there in our tropical waters. As you’d expect with a multi award winning seafood restaurant, Fish D’vine has nailed their famous seafood platter. The Seafood Indulgence honours the tastes of the Whitsundays. With a fusion of flavours from around the globe, the dish has the visual ‘wow’ factor. Served in two stages, the selection of hot and cold seafood costs $110 (feeds two people). What a treat, or should I say, feast! The cold seafood selection is served first with a combination of local chilled prawns, shucked Coffin Bay natural oysters, sugar cane cured salmon, fresh bugs and Tuscan marinated octopus. The hot seafood selection features Moroccan spiced prawn mini kebabs, grilled local fish fillet, baked sea scallops, kilpatrick oysters, BBQ’d tiger prawns, garlic cream green lip mussels and golden fried calamari. The platter is accompanied by crispy bread and housemade sauces and a vinaigrette, with plenty of fresh lemon to add some zest to your seafood delights. I really did try my hardest to devour the platter. This feast is plenty to feed two people and you will not be disappointed with fresh and succulent seafood... The platter is both a statement and experience.

ISLAND GATEWAY HOLIDAY PARK WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF ISLAND GATEWAY HOLIDAY PARK? The atmosphere, facilities and the fact that it is a short walk into town. As soon as we arrived, we felt welcome. The friendly staff took the time to explain where everything was and told us all about the facilities on offer. There is a large outdoor swimming-pool, tennis court, children’s play area, bike hire, outdoor bbq facilities, a television room, laundry and camp kitchen. We had booked a Campotel, which is a freestanding tent made from fibreglass and canvas on a large raised platform. The mattress sits on the platform in the middle. It is like an ultra-modern tee-pee and it looked like great fun!

WHY CHOOSE THIS ACCOMMODATION? The park is pet friendly and they have a dedicated tour desk on site, where we were able to book a package that saved us a lot of money. They definitely are the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands! A day trip out to see the Whitsunday Islands, two night’s accommodation, an evening meal and unlimited wifi, all for $205 per person! That night we took a leisurely stroll into town under the stars. When we returned, the park was cool and quiet and we slept well in our new home away from home.

WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION DOES THE PARK OFFER? Island Gateway offers everything from deluxe family villas with their own private spas to powered and unpowered camping sites. They also have motel rooms and cabins. The options are designed to suit any budget and any type of group. The grounds and the facilities are immaculately kept and the tour desk, with everything you can image on offer for every age group, made booking a tour easy and straightforward.

COST Unpowered sites start from $30 per night, cabins are $105 per night and deluxe villas with a spa are $165.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND ISLAND GATEWAY TO A FRIEND? Definitely! The park is a pleasure to visit. There is a great atmosphere and friendly staff, plus it is the closest park to town. Just a short walk to the supermarkets and restaurants.

Ride to Paradise

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR? The first time you see Paradise Cove Resort it is like you have jumped straight into a James Bond movie, an un-touched beach with tall sweeping palms above, No-one is around. It is utterly private. The resort is only available to Ride to Paradise guests, so we had the whole place to ourselves! The main part of the resort is a huge Mediterranean style mansion with stunning Balinese dĂŠcor. The cabins, which range from a private rainforest retreat to smart single king 6 bed dorms, are scattered in the grounds close by. We were surprised to see the extent of facilities on offer, a swim in the lagoon style pool, paddleboarding from the beach, even a game of tennis, table tennis, badminton and football. We spent the afternoon relaxing and getting to know the other guests. The crew were on-hand at all times and we all ate a delicious meal together, discussing the exciting day we had planned for tomorrow.

There is no other tour like this on offer in the Whitsundays. Wildcat leaves from Abell Point Marina at 2pm for a fast thrill ride to the isolated Paradise Cove Resort where guests can relax and spend the night in comfort. The next day we wake for another action packed journey straight to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet where we take postcard pictures and

THINGS TO DO MACKAY GETTING AROUND

SEE A PLATYPUS IN EUNGELLA NATIONAL PARK

BY TAXI

One of the most ecologically diverse stretches of tropical rainforest in the world, Eungella National Park is also home to the famous platypus. Enjoy a meal with a breathtaking view across the rainforest in Eungella, then walk to the Broken River viewing platform for a chance to see a platypus.

Taxis are available throughout the Mackay region. Call 13 10 08 to organise your journey.

WATCH A SUNRISE WITH WALLABIES ON CASUARINA BEACH

TOURS AND TRANSPORT SERVICES

Spend an evening in Cape Hillsborough National Park and wake before the sun rises to enjoy a spectacular Australian experience. Take a few steps onto the beach at Casuarina Bay and watch the spectacular sunrise, illuminating the friendly wallabies who venture to the surf for their morning breakfast.

See the Mackay region through the eyes of a local expert by booking one of the many tours available. Visit the Mackay Visitor Information Centre on Nebo Road for more information and friendly advice.

WEATHER

SWIM IN BLUE WATER LAGOON Perfect for swimming year-round, Mackay’s Bluewater Lagoon is the place to relax and refresh during a hot tropical day. Featuring three age-appropriate lagoons, a children’s water playground and a water slide, it’s fun and refreshing for everyone. Best of all, entry is free, with free electric barbecue facilities to enjoy a lagoon-side lunch.

EXPLORE MACKAY’S SCENIC BLUEWATER TRAIL The Mackay region enjoys summer-like warmth year-round, with an average maximum daily temperature of 32 degrees Celsius in the summer and 23 degrees Celsius in the winter. Being a tropical city, it experiences wet and dry months. The most rainfall occurs between December and March. However, even during the wet season the majority of days are still filled with periods of hot sunshine. Cyclones frequently form in the Coral Sea during the wet season and can cause severe damage to parts of the Queensland Coast. However, these are well broadcast on major television and radio stations giving ample warning.

WEATHER IN DECEMBER/JANUARY Summer in Mackay is hot, humid and sticky. It’s a good idea to head to the coastal areas as they experience a pleasant sea breeze at this time of year. Temperatures range from 23-30 degrees and although it is hot, rain is common. 43 cyclones have passed within 150km of Mackay since 1910 and this is the season for them. Mackay can expect 17 days of thunder each year and the majority of them happen in the summer too!

MUST-DO MACKAY ZIPLINE THROUGH RAINFOREST CANOPY IN FINCH HATTON GORGE Discover the waterfalls of the Finch Hatton Gorge on a morning bush walk, then see the rainforest from a different angle. Fly through rainforest canopy from 25 metres above ground for a close encounter with the tree tops on a zipline.

76

Mackay’s Bluewater Trail is a pedestrian and bike path which links many of the city’s key attractions. From river wetlands to Mackay’s public art and art-deco inspired buildings, to the Botanical Gardens and the Bluewater Lagoon, the trail is a blend of heritage and entertainment.

Did you know?

There are 24 national parks surrounding Mackay with designated camping spots, as well as the option for true bush camping. Living off the grid has never been so sweet.

Nature calls If the thought of being sans technology for a weekend scares you more than finding out all those drop bear rumours are actually true, stop reading now.

TRY THESE 5 FOR STARTERS

But if unspoilt (almost deserted) beaches, epic fishing and secret camping spots nestled within beautiful national parks appeal to the explorer within, turn off the GPS and take a detour to The Mackay Region.

2. Cape Palmerston National Park Bush camping + fishing = heaven on a stick.

Whether you’re in a tent, caravan or trailer, a camping trip to Mackay means nature can return to the spotlight. From walking with wallabies on the beach at Cape Hillsborough National Park, to scuba diving with platypuses in Eungella National Park, or waking up to the Great Barrier Reef just beyond the tent flap on a nearby island, it’s the in-the-know campers who have all the fun in this naturally-blessed region. So, leave the terms and conditions behind, stop your downloads and get back to simplicity in nature.

Northern Beaches Spring is a gorgeous time of the year to explore Mackay’s Northern Beaches. The weather is typically warm and dry, perfect for soaking up the relaxed tropical lifestyle of these friendly beachside communities. Stroll across the warm sand and then seek shade under a palm tree. The beaches are famously quiet, so you won’t have to look hard to find your own slice of paradise.

POTTER’S OCEANSIDE MOTEL

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF POTTER’S OCEANSIDE MOTEL?

WHERE IS IT LOCATED?

In a word, serenity. Potter’s Oceanside Motel is uniquely placed in Mackay, away from the loud traffic of the Bruce Highway and away from the noise of the CBD. I couldn’t believe how quiet the location is, all I could hear was the breeze rustling through the mangroves and birdsong.

Located at 2C Gordon Street East, Potter’s Oceanside Motel is a short stroll from beautiful Town Beach in East Mackay.

WHY CHOOSE THIS ACCOMMODATION?

I stayed in an Executive King room priced at only $139 per night (Monday - Thursday) and $129 per night (Friday - Sunday). As standard with this room I received free Wi-Fi, nice bathroom toiletries and an extensive choice of tea and coffee from an in-room Twining’s box.

Potter’s Oceanside Motel is number one in Mackay on TripAdvisor, and my stay highlighted exactly why! The welcoming service is a breath of fresh air. The managers go out of their way to ensure every guest is treated as though they are the only ones staying at the motel. When entering my room, I was immediately impressed. I thought to myself, “Is this a motel room or a luxury apartment?” It was immaculately clean, my king-sized bed was so comfortable and the pillows are heavenly soft. I took a refreshing swim to cool off from the Queensland heat and relaxed on a poolside lounger. The manager then made recommendations for local restaurants in the CBD and offered to drop me off in their courtesy shuttle, free of charge. What service! The sunset view from my balcony was spectacular over the mangroves. The next morning I woke early to watch a magnificent sunrise over Town Beach and take a stroll along the sand. I then enjoyed a hearty poolside breakfast, cooked to order from the breakfast menu. I made the most of the time I had left by taking one of the motel’s complimentary push bikes for a quick ride along the Bluewater Trail to the Pioneer River. Unbelievably, if you stay on a Saturday evening, you can take advantage of their ‘Snooze-in Sunday’ offer, where checkout isn’t until 5 p.m.

COST AND INCLUSIONS

I also had the option to use a local gym, Anytime Fitness, for free during my stay, plus airport transfers are also free of charge.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO A FRIEND? Better than that, I have already booked family members arriving from overseas to stay at Potter’s Oceanside Motel when they visit Mackay. That’s how much I enjoyed my stay, I wouldn’t want them staying anywhere else!
