Win... the ultimate getaway for you and your partner this Valentine’s Day, thanks to at Hotel Group and Addicted to Detail. Welcome to 2013! The best thing about a new year is a new start. Saying goodbye to what has been and being excited about what is yet to come. Although we cannot predict what is on the cards for the next 12 months, we have the opportunity to hold onto everything good the past 12 months has brought, and let go of the things we don’t need to carry with us into 2013. Nearly everyone I have spoken to is welcoming the new year and hoping it will be more prosperous than the last, with less challenges and setbacks, on both a business and personal level. I recently received some great advice I wanted to share. “To ensure the new year brings you what you are hoping for, you need to have the courage to close the door on the things that just aren’t working for you anymore, and the faith in knowing that by only closing one door, can another door open, a door that brings a new adventure and new experiences. As the old saying goes, casa ra sara, what will be will be. Meaning there are many things in life we cannot control, but having the courage and faith to change the things you can, makes all the difference.” anonymous Here’s is to an amazing 2013 full of hope, love and change.

MEET JON AND ROSS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AN AWESOME NIGHT OUT BUT SICK OF THE STANDARD TOP 40 TUNES AND BAD REMIX COVERS PLAYED AT OTHER NIGHTCLUBS IN THE AREA? DO YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE THE LATEST IN AUDIO AND VISUAL EFFECTS, SIMILAR TO THOSE IN A LAS VEGAS NIGHTCLUB?

Tryst Bar and Nightclub has launched right here in Mackay and club owners, Jonathan Patch and Ross Butcher, promise that Tryst will be the highlight of your next night out. Tryst is the latest addition to the Mackay places to be seen, business partners Jonathan and Ross have stripped out the old Code Nightclub to bring you this amazing new nightclub experience. “We’ve visited clubs in Miami, Las Vegas and some down south to come up with the idea for this new club. We’ve created a more user friendly space, with an easy set up and no dead space to make it a better place for our patrons to frequent,” John said. “The name Tryst works well with the nightlife scene, meaning an agreement between lovers to meet at a certain place and time.” The boys have spent countless hours designing the layout of the club and have been planning upcoming events that promise their club will offer Mackay a unique nightlife experience. “We have a few well known DJ’s set to play at Tryst, we have residents from Chinese Laundry in Sydney, the Family in Brisbane and we are excited to be bringing the standard of music to that which is played in major venues in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. We want to present a more upmarket style of entertainment and a nice environment for people to spend some time,” Jonathan said. “We plan on providing a place where people can meet for a chilled Sunday session in the city or where they can kick off after events like the 8 www.corelife.com.au

races and local music festivals. We will open earlier on those given days so people don’t have to wait around to have somewhere to go.” Jonathan and Ross have come up with some innovative ideas for the Mackay night scene which will set them apart from the rest. “We will be offering Bottle Service at the club, which means as a group you can purchase a bottle of alcohol from a chosen list and you are able to enjoy it in your own private space without being hassled by other party goers. We have also installed LED screens that run the entire length of the back wall and a high quality sound and visual system like Mackay has never seen.” Tryst is ready to give you a memorable night out, for more information find Tryst Bar and Nightclub Mackay on Facebook.

IS IT TIME TO

IN SMARTPHONE ONLINE SHOPPING THE RESERVE BANK OF AUSTRALIA GAVE US A GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENT BY DROPPING THE CASH RATE BY 25 BASIS POINTS TO 3%. The National Australia Bank was the first major bank to move on rates, announcing it would trim 20 basis points from its standard variable rate taking it to 6.38%. Clients of Steve Taylor & Partners currently enjoy a variable rate of ONLY 5.58%! I am being asked, “Do you expect further rate cuts from the R.B.A?” The short answer, in my opinion, is that it is likely the official cash rate could drop to 2.75% by June 2013. The next most common question I am asked is, “Should I lock in all or part of my home mortgage now?” Currently most banks are offering a locked rate for 3 years at LESS than the variable rate. This also indicates an expectation that rates might move lower. As with most decisions, there are advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of locking in part or all of your current interest rate for 3 to 10 years is that you remove the stress of worrying about rate increases and know with certainty what your commitment is for the next 3 to 10 years. The disadvantage is that if you wish to pay out the loan prior to the expiry of the fixed time, the bank can charge you a penalty which reflects their “economic cost” of any early payout. Many of our clients hedge their bet by having part variable and part fixed, however every client’s circumstances are unique and need to be assessed individually. Should you be considering locking all or part of your loan rate in, discuss it with your Bank Manager or feel free to visit our website: www.stevetaylor.com.au and submit your enquiry. CONTINUED INCREASES IN ‘SMARTPHONE’ MOBILE SHOPPING – LED BY A RECORD NUMBER OF FEMALES ADOPTING THE TECHNOLOGY, IS HELPING AUSTRALIANS AVOID THE SHOPPING QUEUES, ACCORDING TO TELSTRA RESEARCH RELEASED RECENTLY. Almost one in two smartphone owners have used their phone for ‘preshopping’ to support a purchase decision and almost three in four of these have converted to an offline purchase as a result. Telstra Director of Digital Media and Content, Adam Good, said the third annual Smartphone Index conducted by Nielsen proved consumers are showing more confidence in purchasing goods and services online. “Smartphone popularity continues to surge and our research shows Australian women are leading the way in making it the device of choice for not only shopping, but also searching, social networking, and other tasks,” Mr Good said. “Shoppers looking to avoid the chaos at malls and stores are browsing products on their smartphones before purchasing, making their shopping rush a more efficient, enjoyable experience.” TELSTRA’S SMARTPHONE INDEX REVEALS: •

More than one in two (52%) mobile owners are connected smartphone users, up from 41% in 2011, 32% in 2010.

There is a continued surge in smartphone interest from females and younger populations. Some segments show penetration as high as 86% and usage as high as 10 hours a week.

Shopping is on the rise. Consumers are showing more confidence in purchasing goods and services via smartphones – females in particular have contributed greatly to certain growth categories.

Almost nine in ten have multi-tasked with their smartphone. With high connectivity and steady usage throughout the day, smartphones are used to a great extent for multi-tasking with other devices, activities and consumption of other media.

Road riding is one major facet of motorcycling and through local social riding clubs, many people participate each weekend on rides taking them for a one hour or a full weekend ride with a group of like-minded people.

RIDING A MOTORCYCLE CAN BE DONE FOR MANY REASONS; WORK, COMMUTING, COMPETITION OR JUST FOR THE PURE ENJOYMENT.

The Central Highlands Motorcycle Club recently held their annual Route 66 Poker Run in aid of local charities and a rousing success was had. Riders of all ages and motorcycle types came along for the day and, as usual, all had a great, trouble free time. Motorcycle social riding clubs are all across the State and are well worth getting involved in if you are seeking the opportunity to get out on your bike and have fun. Social riding continues to gain momentum amongst riders of all ages and all motorcycle types and generally there will be a club in your area which you can join. Most riders will tell you that there is no better sight than looking in your rear view mirror and see nothing but motorcycle headlights for as far as the road winds. I must admit, this sight sure does it for me still, after all these years of riding. So next time you see a poster or sign advertising a ride, make sure you get along as you will have a great day out amongst people enjoying exactly what you enjoy. Otherwise, drop by the shop and I’ll be glad to let you know what’s coming up in the Central Highlands. Ross Drayton - Dealer Principal - Central Bike Centre, Emerald

for the boys SCALEY MACKEREL, YELLOW MACKEREL OR SHARKY MACKEREL, CALL THEM WHAT YOU LIKE, ARE AN “UNDERRATED” SPECIES THAT IS ON OFFER FOR ALL ANGLERS FISHING THE GREAT BARRIER REEF OFF THE WHITSUNDAYS. THIS SPECIES OF MACKEREL IS OFTEN CAUGHT WHILST TARGETING THE MORE GLAMOROUS MACKEREL FAMILY MEMBER, “SPANISH”!

The Shark Mackerel is commonly known by both commercial and recreational fisherman but is often not regarded (from the recreational side) as an eating quality fish. The “Shark Mackerel” is the official name but was, up until recently, officially known as “Large Scale Tuna”, it comes with a “shark” like ammonia smell when caught. This smell will put most people off eating it and they often release them or just cut them up for bait. The smell is only in the skin and scales so if you bleed and ice upon capture and before cooking, fillet the fish and remove the skin (so only eat the flesh, don’t cook the skin) it is of perfect eating quality. I have had some people not taste the difference between them and Spanish Mackerel! I probably wouldn’t go that far but the flesh is white and of a similar texture to Spanish Mackerel and is great for battered or crumbed fish and also great for any other fish dish, such as a curry or casserole. Methods used for catching “sharkies” are endless but trolling/casting lures and bait fishing are all very productive. The easiest way is probably trolling reef edges with small “barra” style lures with a small wire trace at around 6knts. You will see schools of whitebait showering the reef edges at certain times, this is an indication that the “sharkies” are there pushing the bait into the shallows to feed and this is a great spot to start trolling. Areas with lots of scattered bommies are also a great place to chase sharky macs. Often, 16 www.corelife.com.au

if chasing Spanish Mackerel, try downsizing a lure in your trolling spread and you will start to catch a few “sharkies” amongst the Spanish. Flicking metal slug lures on light spin tackle is also a very productive way to target them but they have been known to take divers, stick baits and even large poppers targeting Giant Trevally on occasions. Casting towards those reef edges where the bait is showering up is a sure-fire way of getting a hookup!

When reef fishing, some “sharkies” have been known to take a bottom bait meant for a trout! But the most productive method is floating a pilchard on a 2-gang hook out the back of your boat whilst on anchor. A little burley will also bring the “sharkies” to you! The average size “sharky” is probably 4-5kg with an 8kg fish being a good one. The Australian all tackle record is a little over 12kg, which would be good fun on light gear. So next time you’re at the reef and the icebox is looking a bit empty, maybe try and catch a Sharky Mac or 2, I think you will be pleasantly surprised! 2012 STARTED WITH A GLORIOUS BANG FOR THE LOCAL MINING INDUSTRY WITH BARELY ANY SIGNS OF THE DESTRUCTION THAT WAS SOON TO COME.

The period of rapid growth experienced over the past few years slowed almost overnight due to factors such as the strong Aussie dollar, the decline in commodity prices and the price of production. The sudden downturn led to the slowing of a few major projects and the loss of hundreds of local jobs. For the local mining industry, the start of 2013 will be a very sobering affair. Narelle Pearse, CEO Mackay-Isaac-Whitsunday Regional Economic Development Corporation (REDC), suggests 2013 will be “flat” but says she does expect improvement after 12 months. “We have still got strong growth in the pipeline. We’ve got new mines coming on board and more than $90billion worth of projects planned or under way across the region. So while we’ve seen a slow down, we are still moving forward.”

“In order to transition from price-led growth and meet the challenge of volume-led growth, we need to address the productivity issue in its fullness.” Pearse agrees, saying businesses need to change to reduce the cost of production and remain sustainable. She urges local businesses to get ready for the next period of growth by looking at training, capability and capacity building. “We need smart businesses going into the future,” Pearse says. “They need to look at things around the digital economy, up-skilling and how they can drive down costs and increase productivity.” But as the mining industry braces for a new era, Pearse reminds locals the region has plenty of opportunities on the horizon.

Many local enterprises are taking stock and getting ready for a slow build with analysts suggesting the way the industry does business needs to change for the next era of mining. Chief Executive of the Australian Coal Association, Dr Nikki Williams, suggested during a recent speech titled ‘The End of the Easy Ride’, that mining-related business will be a very different affair moving forward. “We are now entering a different phase of growth in the coal industry. We have been fortunate to experience a sustained period of historic prices, a situation that has benefited Australia in very tangible ways,” Dr Williams said.

The 797F is the leading Off-Road Haul Truck in the market today with a target payload capacity of 400 tons. WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR? These big boys are used in open cut mining to remove overburden and pre strip. They also appeared in the new Transformers movie. DRIVING IT: Imagine getting into the upstairs bedroom of your two storey house and driving it down the road. Superb power steering means it turns not quite on a penny but, given its size and weight, far more tightly than you would think. The ride, as the mine operators are keen to say, ‘is much better than your average pick-up’. It features a large, spacious cab with unmatched visibility and exceptional operator comforts. You now have the choice to select a cab with the features you desire. There are three choices based on popular arrangements, including a Standard Cab, Deluxe Cab or Deluxe Cold Weather Cab. The sound of the C175 engine shakes the ground when it starts up. For motor enthusiasts it sounds like thunder covered in honey. Gross operating weight (approx): 623,690 kg. IF YOU DON’T KNOW THE STORY ALREADY, PRECISE CORPORATION WAS ORIGINALLY ESTABLISHED AS PRECISE MAINTENANCE BY ASHLEIGH ROWE IN 2000 AT THE AGE OF 25. THIS WAS HIS FIRST BUSINESS VENTURE – TOTALLY UNASSISTED AND SELF-FUNDED. Over the last 12 years it has grown from strength to strength, resulting in Head Office recently relocating to a massive facility on Connors Road, Paget which has just undergone a multi-million dollar renovation. The new Precise facility encompasses the Human Resources division which supplies labour hire and recruitment on and off site; the Spare Parts division boasting the largest range of LEDs in Mackay as well as a huge selection of truck and trailer parts, bling, stacks and accessories; and Precise Truck Centre – which caters for anything from the family car right up to 793 dump trucks and dozers. Log book servicing, mine-site inspections – including BMA, and roadworthy certificates are just a few of the services provided. A wash bay has been incorporated providing a hot/cold washing service for all cars, trucks and earthmoving equipment. Two brand new 26m service pits have been installed to accommodate all truck servicing including B-doubles with no need to unhitch. The pits also incorporate a QLD Transport type dynamic roller brake tester and suspension shaker with individual axle weighbridge. The new facility is now fully operational and open Monday to Saturday - with a view for 24/7 operation - for all servicing and repairs of all cars, trucks and earthmoving equipment.

PHIL DORING’S STRATEGIC APPROACH IS TO WORK WITH SMALL TO MEDIUM BUSINESSES OFFERING A COMPREHENSIVE BUSINESS INSURANCE, FINANCE AND FINANCIAL PLANNING SOLUTION.

Pre-employment medicals (PEM) in conjunction with a functional capacity evaluation (FCE) are an important part of the recruitment process. Employers who value the safety, health and wellness of their employees should be doing pre-employment medicals.

Our ‘Miner’s Pack’ product offering, first released to Queensland’s Bowen Basin coal industry in 2008, now covers the Mining, Oil and Gas Industries Australia wide. The growth and success of the ‘Miner’s Pack’ is attributed to listening to our clients’ needs and then putting in place a team of specialists to provide the complete solution. We have worked closely with our clients from start ups to the established, and grown with them. The areas where our expertise can have positive impacts on your business, your cash flow and your family’s lifestyle are;

The purpose of the medical is to determine suitability for the proposed position; this is influenced by gathering an accurate medical history from the employee, and conducting a thorough medical assessment, by experienced Doctors in Occupational Health.

Tailored business insurances specific to the Mining, Oil and Gas industries,

Public Liability, Professional Indemnity, Statutory Liability, Mine Vehicles, Tools and Plant & Equipment.

The employer receives the complete assessment – and is provided with a report. This outlines any concerns so you, as the employer, can make an informed decision of your candidate’s suitability. The PEM is NOT designed to preclude people from the workforce but simply to place them in a role in which they are safe and productive.

Business Key Persons and Debt Reduction Cover through to international trade and marine cargo insurances.

Income Protection, Life, Trauma and Total & Permanent Disability Covers.

FCE’s combined with the PEM can include cardiovascular fitness, Weight testing, grip strength, range of motion, upper and lower limb testing, back fitness, manual handling testing/techniques, which are all important factors in minimising workplace injury and LTI’s. FCE’s are fast becoming a fundamental part of the recruitment process. These days it is becoming a standard procedure for companies to have these assessments carried out on potential employees before they commence work. Without a comprehensive and accurate pre-employment medical and FCE it may be difficult for employers to accurately place candidates in positions that pose little or no risk to the employee and employer. For more information or to make a booking, please contact: Occupational Health Mackay on - 07 49574 724 or email us at: iom@occupationalhealthmackay.com.au.

Then add your personal domestic insurances to the ‘Miner’s Pack’ for total convenience. BUSINESS LOANS, EQUIPMENT FINANCE AND HOME LOANS Your personal relationship manager will work with you to obtain the most suitable financial outcome that will allow you to continue to grow your business and improve your cash flow. FINANCIAL PLANNING The ‘Miner’s Pack’ would not be complete without the flexibility to provide you the complete solution. A complete financial plan offering or specific advice on a specialised basis in wealth creation, end of financial year planning, buying a house, savings goal, superannuation, self managed superannuation funds, retirement planning, aged care strategies for parents and estate planning. DAVID WILSON, DIRECTOR OF VISION SURVEYS, STARTED THE BUSINESS AFTER PURCHASING THE AIRLIE BEACH OFFICE FROM HIS EMPLOYER, KEVIN HOLT CONSULTING, AND IN 2008 VISION SURVEYS WAS BORN.

In 2009, David was introduced to Brian Forrester (formerly Owner/Director of Pioneer Surveys) through a mutual friend. At the time, Brian was semiretired and David was looking for an experienced Cadastral Surveyor. Since then, Brian and David have joined forces and the business has gone forward in leaps and bounds with Vision Surveys recently opening a new office in River Street, Mackay. “We have wanted to expand to Mackay for quite some time, as a lot of our clients are based there,” David said. “We were waiting for the right person to manage our Mackay office, and we are lucky to have Dennis Gregor join our team.” Dennis was Brian’s partner in Pioneer Surveys, and managed the Mackay office. Dennis is a qualified town planner and registered Cadastral Surveyor. “He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and we couldn’t be happier to have finally brought our services to the city of Mackay.” “With the ever growing region and ongoing infrastructure projects, we keep fairly busy. We had five employees in 2009, and we now have a staff of 34. We are always looking at future projects and have a lot to offer property developers and the construction industry in the region,” David said.

Clinton Arentz and Peter Woolcock

A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND AN INNOVATIVE MIND CAN GET YOU A LONG WAY. CLINTON ARENTZ, DIRECTOR OF THE WINSTON GROUP, HAS PROVEN JUST THAT. Clinton is one of those genuinely nice guys; he’s devoted to his family, is truly passionate about his work and inspired by the town he now calls home, Mackay.

businesses. We have fine-tuned a few things since building Terminus and these changes and improvements will be seen in our Evo development,” Clinton said.

Moving his family up from Brisbane in 2007, Clinton saw potential in Mackay and after a 20 year track record in Brisbane began Winston Group’s first development here, The Terminus Business Park.

“We learnt some valuable lessons during the first development; these lessons have helped us create our new project. Also, having people like Peter Woolcock wanting to be involved more as a base level investor in our new project is a fantastic credit enhancement for us.”

Terminus Business Park was the first development of its kind here in Mackay, offering premium grade offices, showrooms and warehouse space to businesses, all in one handy location. Comprising of 21 units with flexible areas ranging from approximately 330m2 - 1,770m2, Terminus provided countless opportunities for companies who had previously struggled with storing or displaying their products. “We saw the opportunities Mackay has to offer, with the mining industry but more so the businesses that aren’t directly related,” Clinton said. “There was a gap in the market, when it came to housing these businesses and getting their names out there, and that’s why we developed Terminus and the reason it has been a great success.” “Mackay is a fantastic, liveable city, with a healthy economy and a sense of confidence that has the city moving forward. Many of the investors, who bought into the Terminus Business Park, are local people, which is a great thing to see. Peter Woolcock was one such investor. Peter is a long established local business man who saw Terminus as a great opportunity, he invested in the project and bought a unit which was a great thing for us and Peter personally. It’s great that the investors can drive past their investment as often as they like and have a look at how it’s going. Terminus is now completely occupied and, because of its success, we created our next venture, The Evo Business Centre.“ The Evo Business Centre will also target the broad range of businesses within the Mackay and Paget area. “Mining services and their support industries, like repairs and maintenance and a range of value add companies, are constantly emerging and needing space to develop their 30 www.corelife.com.au

A few of the improvements that will be seen in the Evo Business Park development will be increased car spaces, front and rear roller door access and even higher roof heights, which will allow for more storage. “The timing is ideal for this project, with very few products like this one being built. Business owners should be looking 12 months down the track with where they would like to see their business going and we are hoping to start having tenants move in around late 2013” Clinton said. To enquire about the new EVO Business park development, call Clinton Arentz on 1300 799 759 or visit the Winston Group website: www.winston.com.au.

Pancho Garcia planting native trees to rehabilitate coastal dunes as part of Coastcare events.

Pancho moved to Mackay from Gympie, a small town 2 hours north of Brisbane, for the fishing and job opportunities. The first thing he did when he enrolled at CQUniversity in Mackay was ask the Head of Applied and Environmental Sciences Programs, Dr Judith Wake, how he could get involved in environmentalism in the region. “Dr Wake highly recommended Coastcare events as they’re the perfect opportunity to gain valuable experience, work with the community to enhance the condition of our natural resources and to work alongside industry leaders and prospective employers,” said Pancho. In August 2011, Pancho got his hands dirty planting trees to restore coastal dunes at Shoal Point. Since then, he’s been a regular at Coastcare events. Pancho is in his third and final term of the Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies program, which will enable him to study Environmental Science in 2013. “Once I complete my studies, I aim to work with the community, urban and rural landowners and regional and government bodies to care for our coastal and marine environments,” said Pancho.

HE PULLS WEEDS, PLANTS TREES AND COLLECTS RUBBISH ALL TO IMPROVE MACKAY’S WORLDRENOWNED COASTLINE. PANCHO GARCIA IS SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT THAT HE VOLUNTEERS EVERY MONTH AT COASTCARE EVENTS. FOR PANCHO, IT’S MORE THAN A HOBBY; HE’S STUDYING AT CQUNIVERSITY TO BECOME AN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST.

Coastcare events, coordinated by Reef Catchments and Mackay Regional Council, happen monthly at beaches across the Mackay region. Coastcare volunteers help to maintain the habitat for native animals, and remove weeds and rubbish. They make the beach better for everyone. Reef Catchments is a not-for-profit company which delivers natural resource management in partnership with the community to preserve the Mackay Whitsunday Isaac region for future generations. Learn about their projects, ranging from coastal management to sustainable agriculture, at www.reefcatchments.com.au.

In 2012, a lot happened in the Coast and Communties program. Weeds cleared from 180 ha of coastal environment to promote

native rehabilitation across an area the size of 265 football fields.

3,343 native species planted

to stabilise coastal dune system and provide habitat for native animals.

144 beach access tracks maintained

to ensure public access to the beach for all.

27 truck loads of rubbish and marine debris removed from our beaches and coastal reserves to prevent rubbish from smothering native vegetation or ending up in our waterways and ocean.

Imagine what we can do in 2013 to improve Mackay’s beaches. Volunteer for 2 hours on the weekend to protect our coast for years to come. Visit www.reefcatchments.com.au to view the Coastcare events schedule.

CORE LIFE MAGAZINE’S SAM CAUGHT UP WITH AUSSIE HIP HOP ARTIST SETH SENTRY TO DISCUSS WHAT HE’S BEEN UP TO, HIS NERF GUN COLLECTION AND WHAT’S WRONG WITH HALO 4!

Q: I saw on your website that you’ve got quite the Nerf Gun Collection. How did this come about? A: It all started when I found one at a garage sale and I took it to a gig once and shot it in the crowd and they went off. People are even bringing their own to my shows and it’s become an ongoing thing. Q: How did you start out?

f

A: I grew up in a little beach town just outside Melbourne, and there was no one really rising there. I was just listening to the music and started freestyling at parties and stuff and got into it from there. Q: Have you played the new Black Ops 2 or Halo 4 yet? Any thoughts? Which do you prefer? A: Black Ops is great! Well when I was younger, I used to play the shit out of Halo 3 and that was great because it kinda took the piss and was generous with the puns. With Halo 4, they’ve given it a really serious tone with perks and kill streak rewards and made it into a bit of a ‘Call of Duty thing’. But I bought it and played it for a few days but it just didn’t really impress me. I’m all about Black Opts 2! [laughs] Q: You’ve been around for awhile. Your song Waitress Song ranked #31 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2009. How does that feel, knowing you’ve reached over a million people with your music? A: Uh good, I think [laughs]. I don’t expect it, and it’s cool that my music is resonating with so many people. When you write a song and it feels so specific to yourself, you find the response overwhelming. Q: You’ve had some impressive collaborations with Pez and 360 – what were they like to work with? A: Awesome man, they’re just good friends and it feels pretty natural with those two. Q: This Was Tomorrow is your debut album and was a JJJ ‘Feature Album’ a few weeks ago – are you happy with the response so far? A: Yeah dude it’s crazy. We got ‘Feature Album’ which was really unexpected, so for everything else, expectations are really really low [laughs]. Q: Have you been to Mackay & the Whitsundays before? A: Yeah I’ve been to Mackay before [on a tour] with Pez about 4 years ago. I’m supposed to come back, I love it up there. Q: Which crowds do you prefer - regional or city? A: Well I never get people from cities come out and say thank you after a show, and I love that – it’s so appreciative. Q: So what’s next for Seth Sentry? A: I’ve got a bunch of festivals coming up, another tour next year, yeah just lots of shit! Performing, which is what I love to do!

@ STELLAROSSA MACKAY This month, Sam from CORE Life Magazine headed in for a sneak peak at Stellarossa’s NEW MENU at Caneland Central, and first thoughts... YUM! The Stellarossa brand was born out of a passion for coffee and service excellence and local Stellarossa owner Mel Fowler certainly understands how important good food and atmosphere is! “We’re all about creating food that looks good, tastes good and that you can enjoy with a glass of wine,” Mel says. “We’re opting for quality over quantity.” And this is certainly the case! So what’s on offer, you ask? Luckily, I had the chance to taste a few different dishes (with lip smacking results). Here are a few of my faves… HALOUMI & CHORIZO SALAD: It’s really hard to find perfectly cooked haloumi but Stellarossa have nailed it. With super-fresh rocket, spicy chorizo, red onion, tomato, roasted capsicum and the tang of Spanish olives thrown on top, this salad packs a punch. OPEN SANDWICH ON SOUR DOUGH: Stacked sour dough toasts, crispy (and I mean crispy) prosciutto, cos lettuce, tomato, avocado with their own in-house aioli… This dish is flavour country! PENNE FILETTO DO PROMODORO: The succulent flavours of chorizo, onion, tomatoes, olives and basil offer a refreshing yet still flavoursome choice. Perfect for a light lunch or dinner with a glass of red. GOURMET LAMB PIZZA: There is nothing but glowing reports about Stella’s gourmet pizzas. Pizza bases made from scratch (imagine guys in chef’s hats tossing pizza dough), with special lamb meatloaf that’s created out of lamb mince, which gives an enhanced flavour plus the combination of tomato, red onion and feta topped with yogurt and fresh rocket, makes this a must have. While aiming for ‘Quality Over Quantity’, these meals certainly have both. Awesome flavours and textures, while still leaving you wanting to undo that top button! A new attraction starting in the New Year will be Tapas Nights from 3pm on Friday and Saturday. With a new menu each week, prepare to be enlightened! Along with an amazing new menu, unique handcrafted signature coffee blends exclusive to Stellarossa are also available and worth a try. So, what are you waiting for? Head down to Stellarossa today and taste it for yourself! 42 www.corelife.com.au

entertainment ELBOWS ITS WAY INTO THE CROWD Adventurer and businessman, JUSTIN BOSELEY, has sourced one of the finest and smoothest world rums and gained sole distribution rights for the Australian market. For spirit drinkers looking to expand their horizons, Cubaney from the Dominican Republic is going to add some excitement to the Australian rum market.

Justin is also ensuring the beverage is stocked in stylish bars and outlets around Australia to give discerning consumers another choice in boutique rum. Justin says, “I’m looking forward to giving people a quality rum experience. First rum was a passion for me, then an obsession, and now it’s my profession.”

Justin travelled the world for ten years working on mega yachts in Europe and the Caribbean and developed a taste for fine rum on his travels. One day, sitting in Barcelona, sipping on Venezuelan rum, he realised he wanted to use his knowledge and experience to import boutique rums to Australia. Upon returning to Australia he decided to put his plans into action.

Although the spirit import business is controlled by large international companies, local Justin Boseley believes he has a quality product which will appeal to the adventurous Australian market. As Justin is based in the Whitsundays, the sailing capital of Australia and coincidentally, the location with the largest consumption of rum outside the Caribbean, we imagine it won’t be long before we see Cubaney making its presence felt in the region.

La Rumbla Imports now uses the convenience of online distribution, and has warehousing and distribution channels set-up in Sydney and the reach of Australia Post to ensure quality customer service and prompt delivery times.

BELGIUM Born of the ancestral know-how of a family brewery, Barbar beer will please you with its’ malt taste and subtle flavour of honey.

The special pure yeast strain gives this wheat beer its’ inimitable taste. A special brewing process with classical in-bottle fermentation results in a particularly digestible and sparkling, yeasty wheat beer.

Very drinkable. Light body. Amber in colour. Afterpath is lively and hoppy. Although it is APA, aroma and taste seems with trend not too simple, fruity.

THERE IS NO GREATER STORY IN AUSTRALIA’S HISTORY THAN THAT OF OUR SUGAR CANE INDUSTRY. THIS STORY IS IDEALLY SHOWCASED, FOR VISITORS OF ALL AGES, AT THE SARINA SUGAR SHED WHERE YOU CAN ‘TAKE THE TOUR AND TASTE THE ACTION’. Sarina Sugar Shed (SSS) is a miniature sugar mill and distillery; in operation since 2006 and it is the only one of its kind in Australia. Open all year round, visitors of any age can enjoy a fully personalised guided tour and see firsthand how sugar is grown, processed, milled and distilled in the unique miniature mill. The tour offers a ‘touchy-feely-tasty’ journey of 3 generations of farming sugar cane. Experience a whole factory tour under one roof... educational and tasty too!

Tour/Transport and Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries categories. Tourism and Economic portfolio Councilor, Greg Martin, said reaching the finals of the State’s premier industry event was an outstanding achievement. “Attractions such as the Sugar Shed showcase our region’s attributes but also provide a real drawcard to boost visitor numbers and strengthen our local economy,” Cr Martin said.

EDUCATIONAL…TEACHERS – LISTEN UP! An educational trip suits all ages from the young ones through to high schoolers and university graduates. Explore one of Australia’s most historic, cultural, and educationally exciting industries.Teachers, bring your textbooks to life by allowing students to experience the miniature sugar processing mill and distillery firsthand. Your students will be excited at the prospect of seeing the processes involved in producing sugar from sugar cane. Use the experience to teach a diverse array of subjects and concepts, from history, science, nutrition, chemistry to politics and finance. TASTY… Not only will the kids be learning how sugar cane is processed but they will also learn what ‘goodies’ are made with the sugar, such as homemade lollies, fairy floss, jams and sugar cane juices. For the big kids, you can see how rum and other boozy beverages are made and can even have a complimentary taste (or two)! TOURS… Offering four, one hour long guided tours daily, the facility is all on one level, it’s ideal for pushchairs, wheelchairs and the less mobile or not so young. Our knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guides adapt the tour to entertain, interest, educate and cater to the needs of the various ages of visitors, families or types of group. AWARD WINNING… SSS has once again put the Mackay region on the tourist map, reaching the finals in not one but two categories at the prestigious Queensland Tourism Awards. The facility was a finalist in the 50 www.corelife.com.au

Owned by Mackay Regional Council, 25 community volunteers work at the Sarina Sugar Shed. Manager of the Sarina Sugar Shed, Glenys Mansfield said being a finalist in the Queensland Tourism Awards was a huge recognition and reward for the dedicated staff and volunteers. “We really did ourselves proud reaching the finals, but to be recognised in two separate categories is a great achievement,” Mrs Mansfield said. “The Sugar Shed exemplifies the sort of authentic tour and travel experiences our visitors are seeking.” Recognised as the only miniature sugar processing mill and distillery in Australia, the Sarina Sugar Shed is open to all ages, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm, all year round. So for a truely authentic experencie, visit them today! What are you waiting for?

CAPRICORN

DEC 21 - JAN 19

Do not completely dismiss someone from your life, there could be something worth saving in the relationship. Your plans for long distance travel could be in doubt at the moment. A financial advantage could fall into your lap. However, be sure to check it’s above board. News that might reach you should be a bit of a surprise.

AQUARIUS

JAN 20 - FEB 19

You could be feeling too restricted in your present environment and plans to move and change your life are in the pipeline. Keep out of arguments with loved ones. Your social life could be still under stress and there could be some delays or unexpected expenses. Be very cautious with strangers and do not neglect your nearest and dearest now. Distrust intuition and hunches, be more cagey and on your toes.

PISCES

FEB 20 - MAR 20

You might have neglected your health during the last few months and now need to be extra careful. Some domestic moments could lift your mood to no end and help with the recovery. Best to stick to your normal physical routine and postpone any important decisions until later as your clarity of thought could be impaired.

ARIES

MAR 21 - APR 20

Very much a period of surprises and sudden changes, you could be thinking of long distance travel and new plans for the future is indicated. Busy time when everything seems to happen. Romantic interludes should do wonders for your ego. However do not get carried away and take unnecessary risks.

TAURUS

APR 21 - MAY 20

You have been hoping for some changes to take place and during this period it looks very much that it soon will. Your love life should be blooming and some romantic times are ahead. Do not try to force any issues, this could only irritate the people around you and aggravate matters. For most the romantic side of life is looking really good.

GEMINI

MAY 21 - JUNE 21

Changes are about to happen but try not to rush in. Interesting people to meet from the past and some surprises in your love life, so not a dull period at all. Try to avoid friction with loved ones and do not get involved in arguments at work. Many people will be keeping a close eye on you and some of those people could have a great influence on your career.

CANCER

JUNE 22 - JULY 22

Good period for enterprises with partners and joint business ventures should prosper. Try to be calm with people who are obviously not in a good mood. The peace at home is very dependent upon your actions. If you fly off the handle at the drop of a hat, the situation will be very strained. Control your temper and try to understand other peoples point of view.

LEO

JULY 23 - AUG 22

A good period to trust your intuition in most aspects and in financial dealings it should be spot on. Someone could help you to achieve what you have been hoping for. Try to be honest with each other where love relationships are concerned. Someone may come to you for advice regarding a sexual problem they are experiencing, be gentle. Try to impress at work.

VIRGO

AUG 23 - SEPT 23

If hoping for a fair hearing of your ideas at the workplace you must state your case clearly and without provocation. You seem to be a very popular person during this period. You are full of self-confidence and this will help you assert yourself in your sex life. Best to keep your lover wanting for more.

LIBRA

Gourmet - Home finishings - Flowers

SEPT 24 - OCT 23

Big changes that could see you travelling a lot. If on the lookout for a new partner, this could be the time to find the right one, very good romance wise. Should be a period of luck and good fortune in most aspects. You might not feel like communicating much with loved ones but it will not stop you from planning your future with them.

SCORPIO

OCT 24 - NOV 22

Some of your best-kept secrets could come out into the open during this period. Trust only those who you know and are worth it. Productive period in working environment. An aggressive attitude with a co-worker could lead to fireworks, wiser to remain in the background if tension is around. Go to the theatre or to a dance for the best results.

SAGITTARIUS

NOV 23 - DEC 20

Something you have been trying to get off the ground for some time should now be ready to launch. Keep everything very clear in your head and important matters should be in writing. Not being too stick in the mud could help you in your career ventures. Feelings of uneasiness could disturb you otherwise happy disposition and relationships. Some luck with a Libra.

for the girls Rachelle gives us a step-by-step guide to getting this hot new look, and explains why your choice in make up can make all the difference.

1. FOUNDATION:

BEFORE

Using Youngblood liquid foundation, Tahitian Sun. I buffed Tamara’s foundation in with a buffing brush, I like using Real Techniques by Samantha Chapman, this brush is synthetic which doesn’t waste your product by absorbing it like a natural bristle brush would, and also leaves your foundation looking and feeling like natural skin.

s

S

s

2. EYES: I smudged eyeliner pencil in the Passion colour, on the entire lid and underneath the eye then with a synthetic eye shadow brush, to build colour, I smudged some more.

1. 2.

I then pressed loose mineral eye shadow over the top to set the pencil and to intensify the colour even more. I wet another eye shadow and applied it in the inner corner of the eye, and when it was dry, I blended it slightly.

3.

This look is meant to stand out so don’t hold back! Line the eyes with blackest black eyeliner, apply to top lashes, then smoke it out with an angle brush and apply to the lower lash water line. Apply heaps of blackout mascara then glue on a set of half strip lashes from Ardell. This gives a cat’s eye lift to the outer corner of the eyes. 3. LIPS: Because the eyes are quite colourful, we don’t want to overdo it with a bright colour on the lips so a neutral colour is best. We used lip liner in Malt and a gloss in Champagne Ice. A word of advice, use mineral make up to allow your skin to breathe, this will also help if you have sensitive skin or are prone to break outs. I recommend Youngblood Mineral make up to everyone. This is a beautiful, quality product that is worth investing in.

4.

4. BLUSH: I used a stippling brush by Real Techniques to apply a crème blush to the apples of the cheeks in Pink Cashmere. Crème blush is an excellent way to get your blush to last the distance.

won’t, and that’s ok! What you can do however is kill ten birds with one goal, that will fast track all your goals for 2013! Think about your HEALTH and FITNESS. This is the one goal you must have in your plan, because without this, it makes any other goal pointless. No amount of wealth, weight loss, relationships or hard work you put into your career, will ever come to pass without your health.

HEALTH & FITNESS - HELP TO BE HEALTHY IN 2013

Many of us will start the New Year with resolutions to do more of things we should, less of things we shouldn’t and to pay closer attention to the important things in life.

Put the brakes on and enjoy some quality time with the people that are really important.

You don’t need to battle your vices alone. Your health fund can help you reach and maintain your health goals by providing cover for programs and services that promote healthy lifestyles. Queensland Country Health Fund’s Healthy Living Benefit aims to encourage and support members to live healthy lifestyles by paying benefits to participate in quit smoking programs, approved weight loss programs and undergo skin cancer checks through mole mapping.

CLEAN UP AND CLEAN OUT!

Say goodbye to the things you just don’t need in your life anymore, including people, and make your world tidy! Start with your inbox.

Ensure you stick to your New Year’s resolution with the help of Queensland Country Health Fund. In addition to helping you maintain a healthy lifestyle, they can also keep you looking and feeling good with therapies like optical, dental, chiropractic and therapeutic massage available with all extras packages.

new year, new you THIS MONTH WE CAUGHT UP WITH 47-YEAR-OLD DARREN WILLIAMS. THIS MARRIED FAMILY MAN, WHO WORKS IN REAL ESTATE, TALKS TO US ABOUT HIS AMAZING FITNESS JOURNEY. A JOURNEY WHICH HAS HELPED HIM TO DISCOVER A NEW LEASE ON LIFE, BETTER HEALTH AND A PASSION FOR FITNESS THAT HAS TRULY CHANGED HIM, AND NOT JUST ON THE SCALES.

Q: How long have you been a member of Hi-Energy?

remain fit and healthy. I have worked too hard to get to where I am today to go back to my old ways.

A: I have been a member of Hi-Energy for 4 years.

Q: What does your weekly training schedule look like?

Q: What was your starting weight and fitness level like when you first started?

A: I try to attend the gym as much as possible. I am quite addicted to cardio – crosstrainer/treadmill which I try to do most days for an hour. I also complete a weight regime 3 times per week. Recently I realised that I am not that flexible any more... funny that... so I was talked into doing a Body Balance class in which I found numerous muscles not stretched for some time...

A: My initial weight was 117Kg. Whilst I kept myself fit in my early twenties with martial arts, I basically did no exercise from age 26 – 43 years. I initially started walking about 5km most days for about 6 months because I was embarrassed about my fitness before my wife joined me at Hi-Energy and then I started going to the gym.

Q: You have worked very hard for a long time to get to where you are today, what would you say to other people struggling with weight and health issues to help them start today?

Q: What weight are you currently and what is your proudest fitness moment? A: My weight is now 88kg (total loss of 29kg!). My most satisfied fitness moment was being able to run 10km in under 52 minutes. Q: What were your excuses beforehand in regards to living a healthy and active lifestyle? A: Too busy with work, too many business lunches, exercise was too hard not a priority, drinking too much, the usual excuses.

Q: What are your 2013 health and fitness goals? A: Some other gym members and myself are going to attempt some half marathons next year... this will be my training goal.

Q: What was the turning point for you to take control of your health? A: When I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and placed on blood pressure medication.

Q: What do you like most about training at Hi-Energy?

Q: What are your main influences and motivation to keep your health a priority today? A: I feel much healthier, stronger and fitter. My blood pressure is better, I enjoy the high I get from exercise and mixing with people who are keen to

A: Be persistent and consistent. It is not easy – it certainly was not easy for me to start exercising after such a long break... but the results certainly pay off. It is a lifestyle choice for me now... it’s part of my daily routine. It is important to make exercise a priority in your life and to take responsibility for your own health.

A: Hi-Energy is a friendly gym where you are always greeted with a smile. new year, new you

The rich foods that we eat during Christmas and New Years are often full of sugars and fats which can lead to weight gain. Our liver has had to work overtime to process extra alcohol and foods and our bowels may not be functioning at a normal level. So despite the fact that you are ready and rearing for a New Year, you might not be feeling your 100% best. Other common ‘hangover’ symptoms from the festivities that you might be experiencing can include irritable bowels, problems with digestion, bloating and even feelings of being depressed. Sounds like your body needs a quick tune up and tailor-made DETOX to get you back in top shape. DETOX CAN HELP US TO: • Lose weight • Increase energy • Improve liver and bowel function • Improve emotional balance Lots of water, healthy food and exercise can help the body to detox itself, but sometimes we need even more of a kick start! A tailored detox program designed by a Naturopath can quickly and effectively remove toxins from our system and bring us back to good health.

IT’S A NEW YEAR, AND YOU ARE LOOKING AT A NEW YOU! LITERALLY. ON AVERAGE WE PUT ON APPROXIMATELY 1.8KG AFTER THE CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR PERIOD. AND FOR SOME IT MAY BE EVEN MORE. OOPS!

January is the perfect month to detox the body to better health. The most important factor causing skin aging is excess sun exposure but there are others such as genetic influences, toxins such as cigarette smoke, illnesses such as diabetes, poorly controlled diabetes and even diet. The consumption of excess sugar can damage the skin also. What we need to do to lessen skin aging depends on the age and stage our skin is at. In the YOUNGER AGE GROUPS the emphasis is on prevention. This can best be done by a targeting a homecare programme, containing particular growth factors, vitamin C and a non greasy sunblock. Helpful clinic procedures would be ultrasonic facials and blue-red light therapy. For the MIDDLE RANGE AGE GROUPS the home care programme is still important but needs to be a little more aggressive. Peptides would be a useful addition. Clinic procedures become important and these include chemical peels, roller needling, platelet skin injections and laser rejuvenation. With the MATURE AGE GROUPS all of the above are useful but will probably need to be done more frequently and more aggressively. If the fat under the skin of the face has shrunk then volume replacement is needed with a fat transfer from tummy to face. Surgery such as face and eyelid lifts is often needed where skin and muscle has sagged. With care, younger people can keep their beautiful skin but it is never too late to start and even severe cases of sun damage can be greatly improved. new year, new you

YOUR FACE IS YOUR SOCIAL SIGNATURE. PEOPLE INSTANTLY RECOGNISE YOU BY IT AND THEY CAN USUALLY TELL YOUR AGE BY IT AS WELL.

new year, new you New Year’s resolutions again, let me guess one of them... ‘this year I am going to lose 5 kilos and get healthy?’ How about a different approach, one that is not only long lasting and works but allows you to develop a couple of new habits that will not only help you keep your weight down but also give you vibrant health and energy. You will glow from the inside-out, boosting your immunity to keep all of those nasty, modern diseases away.

A week’s cleanse to give your digestive system a rest.

As, our body is made to cleanse every day, lets support this by incorporating some great cleansing foods into our everyday diet.

Have a couple of flushes, really there is no other way that you will get the same instant result in one hour. Your liver, blood and brain will love you.

This is a week of being vegan, but not starving, and drinking plenty of filtered alkaline water. Aloe Vera: is a crucial part of any weight loss and fitness regime as it has been shown that when you ingest aloe, you can lose weight and gain muscle mass. Aloe vera polysaccharides have immune modulating effects and allow the human immune to fight back chronic viral, nanobacteria and fungal infections.

Breakfast: Green smoothie - handful of baby spinach, 2 stalks of celery,½ leb cucumber, ½ avocado,½ green apple, some mint, 2 scoops super vitality greens, ¼ cup aloe vera, filtered water. Put into blender and blend until smooth, have this throughout the morning. Lunch: Green vibrant salad with fresh sprouts and anything green. You can use a mixture of grated, chopped and sliced with fresh herbs such as coriander or basil, with ¼ cup cultured vegetable and some good sea salt. Dinner: Stir fry vegetables with 3 of your favourite vegetables, in matchsticks or slices with your favourite herbs (hint have 3 different vegetables combinations each night, cut a different way).

Cultured Cuisine, cultured vegetables: Fermentation boosts the digestive tract with good bacteria, supports the body with active enzymes, and even aids in detoxification, by supporting the body to dump heavy metals. Fermenting cruciferous vegetables actually makes them a superfood with added health benefits of destroying cancer cells, protecting brain health, and reducing chronic inflammation.

Want to take up the challenge? We are offering three colonics for $290, where we will also give you a more detailed cleansing plan that is suited to your lifestyle at no extra cost.

Livamend: The liver and bowels are the body’s main organs for cleansing the blood and tissue of toxins. A congested liver is reflected in the skin and the eyes. Keeping the liver decongested is important to maintain overall well-being.

new year, new you FACT: YOU ARE THE ONE IN CONTROL OF YOUR THOUGHTS – SO START TO REINFORCE POSITIVE THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR APPEARANCE. CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME.

Posture is vital for generating feelings of wellbeing. Stand up tall, shoulders back, chin up, stomach in – you will get rid of a gut instantly by doing this! No fat burners necessary! FACT 1: It is also harder to maintain posture due to the amount of energy your body uses whilst practicing it. FACT 2: Functionally focused weight training with great posture will only exaggerate the energy use for a great result.

Water, Number 1 nutrient after oxygen. FACT 1: Pain management, anxiety disorders, depression and lethargy, in most cases, can be significantly reduced or cured just from proper hydration, not to mention the importance of hydration when trying to lose fat. FACT 2: Our bodies make fat cells purely to hold water to keep vital organs functioning while dehydrated. Water requirements will vary depending on the body mass of the individual – the bigger you are, the more water you need.

Weight training is vital for lean toned muscles and fat loss. FORGET CARDIO! FACT: You will achieve more in 3 x 30 minute functionally focussed resistance workouts per week than 8-10 hours of walking. Redevelopment of muscle fibre recruitment via functional weight training techniques (taught exclusively at Generations) means you will be consuming more energy 24 hours a day.

Stay away from processed foods – anything out of a packet – stay away from it. Natural clean, lean proteins, salads, green vegies and small amounts of fruit – you know the drill. Nickie Ware is a Miss Australia, 2x Miss International Bodybuilding Champion, Master trainer and nutrition expert.
