MAJOR PRIZE: 3 DAY GENERAL ADMISSION PASS AND HELICOPTER SCENIC FLIGHT FOR YOU AND A MATE.

I am absolutely thrilled with this month’s feature, “Personalities in Business”, and would like to thank everyone who took part. From crawling through mud, getting intimate with a tyre, wrapping girls in vinyl, breaking glass, riding push bikes in the rain, dropping in on some cool circus characters, getting some hot salsa dancing lessons, stopping for a quick workout and wrapping it up with some McDonald’s fries, it has been an adventure to say the least. It took an amazing group of talented people and willing characters to make it possible. You only have to check out the images to see how much work went into every shot. A special thank you to Norina, from Whitsunday Photographer, without you, this would never have been possible. If you want to be a part of our next “Personalities in Business” feature, you can register your interest now, by sending your details and some information on yourself to bec@corelife.com.au.

‘AUCTION’

This month we are sadly saying goodbye to two of our crew members, Kaz O’Brien and Amy Sherlock. Kaz was part of the original team, and has been instrumental in the growth and success of the publication. Kaz will now focus on her dream off becoming a Fitness Instructor. Although I am thrilled she is working towards her own dream, I will miss her greatly. Amy joined the crew in November 2011 as our graphic designer, and has guided the publication through a complete change of design and format. Her amazing talent is showcased in every issue and she leaves behind some big shoes to fill. Amy is leaving us to take on her own exciting business venture. We know they will both do well and we wish them all the best for the future. Although they are leaving their current roles, they won’t be flying to far from the nest. You may catch Kaz out and about delivering the new CORE Life issue each month and you will surely catch up with Amy, and all the gossip, at our monthly launches. Enjoy June

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON 5 MILLION DOLLARS IN THE LOTTO? Spend it of course! First thing I would do is throw a huge party to celebrate with all my family and friends with gifts for everyone!

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON 5 MILLION DOLLARS IN THE LOTTO?

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON 5 MILLION DOLLARS IN THE LOTTO?

First pay off all my loans. Have a small holiday with my wife Veronica then I would put the remainder in the bank, so I have time to think. With the dollars that are left, I’ll have some reserved for charitable activities.

Well I guess if I won 5 mil the first thing I would do is finish the house we have been renovating forever and then making sure all my family and friends are set up.

I’ve been a member of Walkerston Rotary for the last 15 or so years, I would give Rotary a large amount and it would be distributed between the Rotary Foundation to help with the Polo+ project to eliminate Polo worldwide, ROMAC- Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children to help with saving children so they can live a normal life, but I would also give donations to many other worthy charities.

After taking care of the “responsible” items like paying off the mortgage, saving for my children’s education and a donation to the Cancer Council, I would upgrade our fishing boat, buy a Winnebago and take off with my family on a trip around Australia. I would invest some winnings in a new business venture and I’d also be browsing the galleries for some original oil paintings for my house.

Have my house finished off and build another shed for a MAN’S WORKSHOP at home, fitted out with MAXILOAD racking and all the tools I need.

ASHLEE ENGLISH, MACKAY TURF CLUB

ALAN KEOGH, MULTI-RACK MACKAY

I might also do some remodelling to my Porsche 944S2 and travel around.

Next on the list would be my fab staff at Mint Hair, I would love to be their genie and grant them one wish each, as long as they stayed my team mates for at least 10 years (ha ha). So I’m now guessing I’m poor again right? Well the one thing I would make sure I did was set up a safe place for all the dogs on death row so they would all have an amazing home and I guess after that I would just come to work as I do everyday. Lucky I love it! Oh yeah, maybe we would have Mint 3 a bit sooner, who knows? SHELLEY GERHARDT, OWNER, MINT HAIR OORALEA & SARINA

Build a new MULTIRACK shed so we can display all the fantastic racking and storage ideas we have.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH 5 MILLION? LET US KNOW ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.

for the boys LEE HOLDSWORTH MIGHT DRIVE A MERCEDES-BENZ E63 AMG BUT HE DOESN’T HAVE AN ATTITUDE THAT GOES WITH IT, HE’S JUST AN NORMAL EVERY DAY NICE GUY. WELL UNTIL THE HELMET GOES ON AND HE IS SITTING ON THE GRID, THEN IT’S A TOTALLY DIFFERENT STORY.

In his own words he becomes an “arsehole but you have to be if you want to win races and championships. Because the guy next to you wants the same thing and he‘s prepared to do whatever it takes as well, there are no friends on the track. However off the track all the drivers are pretty good lads to have a beer and a laugh with after a hard day of racing”. He has come from the ground roots of racing like many other drivers, it all started with Lee’s dad taking him and his brother to the race track to watch the V8’s and Indy whenever he could from the age of four. One of his greatest memories as a kid was watching Nigel Mansell run around the Gold Coast Indy track. Nigel would use so much road that the writing off the wheels of his K Mart open wheeler would be worn off. Lee also started in a Go Kart at the tender age of seven. He never won any major titles over the ten years but learnt a valuable lesson that his dad would say “you have to do your best with what you have”. When you hear things like that, it’s no wonder Lee’s two greatest idols in life are his dad and Nigel Mansell. Lee is now a father to a lovely little girl called Ava, he puts her birth up with the greatest things in life like marring his wife Alana and the day he became a full time V8 Supercar driver. Lee is looking forward to the Townsville track, like most drivers he really enjoys how the front half is all closed in like a typical street circuit, then you come out the back half and it’s all open and great for some two wheel action off the kerbs. He also enjoys the response of the fans that really get behind the sport and the drivers.

for the boys GREEN JOBFISH ARE A VERY UNKNOWN SPECIES THAT LIVE IN OUR WATERS OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF. THERE IS A LOT TO BE LIKED ABOUT THE GREEN JOBFISH. THEY LOOK IMPRESSIVE, FIGHT EXTREMELY HARD AND ARE VERY TASTY ON THE PLATE. They are often caught when targeting red emperor and nannygai on deep shoals but can also be found around shallow reefs and bommies. Green Jobfish can be taken from almost all styles of fishing both bait, live and dead, deep dropped jigs and also trolled lures and surface poppers around the reef edges. I believe this is what makes them very unique and considered a trophy fish! They have a very torpedo-like shaped body, which is dark green on top to pale green and white on the belly. They have a very big, powerful tail which they use well when hooked. They have quite large teeth, which are used for grasping their prey, not like a mackerel etc where they have razor sharp teeth for biting prey in two. I would say the average size encounted locally would be around 6kg but I have seen them grow to around 12kg. Green Jobfish are a species that you really can’t specifically target. They are usually considered a bi-catch when targeting other species. The most common way would be off the bottom over deep shoals but if you spend enough time throwing poppers in search of GT’s you will hook the occasional Green Jobfish. Trolling lures close to the reef edge for mackerel will sooner or later catch you a jobfish, or jigging deep bommies will also have you in the hunt for hard fighting jobby! Green Jobfish are a very aggressive feeder and are known carriers of the ciguatera poisoning. I don’t know of anyone that has suffered from the toxin from a jobfish but if you did catch a large one it would be recommended to either release it or eat only small portions of around 200-300gms. In saying that, generally the flesh is white and firm and extremely tasty. So next time you’re drifting the shoals or maybe throwing poppers to the reef edge, keep a look out for the green machine Jobfish as they are an impressive fish to catch that will put a smile on any angler’s face.

GIVES MACKAY A NEW REPUTATION

MACKAY IS FAST FIRMING UP IT’S REPUTATION AS THE BOATING CAPITAL OF QUEENSLAND WITH ONE BOAT FOR EVERY EIGHT RESIDENTS IN THE REGION. The sandy beaches, ancient reefs teeming with life off untouched Great Barrier Reef islands, this is the Mackay marine based lifestyle. The Mackay Marine Festival is quickly approaching and this year’s festival promises to be bigger and better than ever before. Recently the Mackay Marina was voted the best Marina in Australia (berths greater than 120); it would be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Mackay’s marine lifestyle. The event, running for the third year, will showcase all that the Mackay region has to offer including fishing, boating and marine lifestyles. At the Mackay Marine Festival, there will be an extensive range of exhibitors to encompass all your boating and fishing needs including the Bureau of Meteorology. This event will promote the region’s rich and diverse marine industry, from the Whitsunday archipelago and Great Barrier Reef through to the abundant rivers and fresh water impoundments. Off the coast of Mackay are pristine islands of the Cumberland Group, just waiting to be explored. Mackay Tourism proudly supports this event as it provides the Best Marine Festival to the Mackay and surrounding regions. So whether you’re a novice or seasoned boatie, there is something for everyone.

The Mackay Marine Festival will incorporate the Mackay Tinnie and Tackle Show and Mackay leg of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships. Adding to this year’s Marine Festival will be heaps of FREE family fun with plenty of interactive marine based activities to keep the kids busy – all thanks to North Queensland Bulk Ports. Marine Queensland Events’ Manager Kiri Ngarotata said forget the mining boom – Mackay is bursting with boats - the region boasting one of the state’s highest per capita boat ownership ratios with one boat registered for every 8 residents. “Outside of the Gold Coast - Mackay has the highest number of boats per resident in Queensland,” Ms Ngarotata said. This year’s event will feature plenty of show specials, boats on and off the water, product displays and demonstrations, fishing talks and demonstrations, a FREE kids’ marine zone, the Yamaha Supertank plus heaps more! Mackay Marina will again be the venue for the FREE family event. The 2013 Mackay Marine Festival is proudly presented by North Queensland Bulk Ports and the Australian Offshore Superboat Champions and is also supported by Mackay Marina (Port Binnli), Events Queensland, Mackay Regional Council, Construction Diving Services and the Clarion Hotel.

THE OFFSHORE SUPERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIPS ROUND 2 The Offshore Superboat Championships will see up to 12 boats compete for valuable points in the Australian Championship. 2013 will see the first New Zealand team arrive on our shores to mix it with Australia’s elite. It’s the hometown teams, “Spirit of Mackay” and “Team Navy”, who will be out to win the title in their respective classes in the waters they know best. Team Navy’s crew, Chris and Brendan Frier, are keen to put on a great performance for the home crowd, especially as it’ll be their first race back in Mackay since winning the coveted AUS 1 title. The Spirit of Mackay crew, Scott Gerhman and Graham Fraser, are keen to get back on the water after their spectacular end to their 2012 racing campaign in Mooloolaba last year where their hull exploded after hitting a freak wave. All the hi-octane action can be seen up close and personal on the breakwater wall – the thunder of the engines will be felt as the boats fly along the course at 200km/hr.

WE’RE JUST IN LOVE WITH PLAYING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE, FULL STOP.

AN EXHILARATING BLEND OF FLUID RHYMES AND BANGING BEATS TEAMED WITH BEAT BOXING, IMPROMPTU FREESTYLING AND SEAMLESS TURNTABLISM MAKE THEIR LIVE SHOWS A BRAND IN THEIR OWN RIGHT, AND HAS SEEN THE GROUP HAILED AS ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ACTS IN THE COUNTRY. CORE LIFE MAGAZINE CAUGHT UP WITH MC ESO FROM BLISS N ESO FOR A LITTLE CHAT…

Q: Bliss N Eso are quite renown in Australia and a festival favourite – do you prefer the more intimate shows or the atmosphere and sheer mass of people at festivals? A: Oh that’s a tough one, I guess there’s the thrill of being able to play in front of as many people as at a festival, it’s just a euphoric feeling being in front of a sea of people and being able to perform but it’s kind of hard to take in all at once. We have loved doing festival shows over the years, but I think for us, if we had to pick, it would have to be more of the intimate shows. When we started in Australia about 10 years ago, it was to about 6 people in a pub, but those 5 or 6 people would know every word and make it feel like it was like 1000 people. You also have that face-to-face value with the audience and you’re not just looking out to a mass crowd of people. You can see individual people and it’s cool to see their reactions. We’re just in love with playing in front of people, full stop. Q: BNE have supported 50Cent on a tour in the USA in 2005 – that must have been awesome! Do you have a highlight from that experience? A: [Laughs] I guess at that time, 50Cent was doing quite well and at his peak, and I remember the boys and I talking about him backstage, saying ‘Oh my God, do you think we’ll get to see him or meet him?” and at one point, we were talking about him and he walked past our room and just looked in and I swear, a gigantic pitbull just stared me dead in the eyes and I shat myself for a tiny bit and that was kinda my experience with him. We didn’t really get to hang out with him, but we did go to some pretty sweet after parties and stuff. 22 www.corelife.com.au

Q: What about 2012 SXSW (South by South West) in Texas? A: Look, if I could just go back every year, even if we weren’t playing, it would be sweet. It was such an eye opener – the MECCA of music you know and in this one town for 5 days. There was so many different types of music and people – it was incredible. I had my hand on my dick, just thinking ‘Where the hell do I go?” you’ve got the Foo Fighters playing acoustic just on a street corner outside a pub, you’ve got Yellow Wolves and WooTang playing just down the road, so I had to get a menu of the artists playing to see exactly where to go. It was amazing just as a fan of music to be there. Q: Circus in the Sky, BNE’s 5th studio album is due for release the day before your appearance at River Sessions, can the Mackay crowd expect to hear some new tracks? A: We will definitely be playing some new tracks! Now that we have House of Dreams out, I can imagine that that will definitely be in the set. We’re just excited to have finished the album and have something new out for you guys. After a while, it’s like “Alright, love it, love it, but how about something new?” [Laughs] It’s an all-star cast, that I can’t let you know all about yet, but it’s going to be awesome! Q: So you’ve performed in Mackay before, so you know what to expect from the crowd, right? A: Gnarliness… absolute gnarliness! Body parts flying and naked bodies frolicking! [laughs] Usually, you Queenslanders are a really responsive crowd! Bring it on!

Mackay Cup Carnival July 201 3

A Day at the Races: Mackay Cup Survival Guide

WE ALL LOVE A GREAT DAY AT THE RACES AND WITH THE MACKAY CUP CARNIVAL JUST AROUND THE CORNER; WE THOUGHT WE WOULD SHARE SOME ESSENTIAL TIPS THAT WILL ENSURE YOU HAVE A FUN FILLED RACE DAY WITHOUT ANY LAST MINUTE HICCUPS.

BUY YOUR TICKETS EARLY: I know it’s breaking with Mackay tradition, but to avoid disappointment make sure you purchase your tickets as early as possible as some hospitality options have limited places and will sell out fast.

DRESS TO IMPRESS: Why play it safe when it comes to fashion this Mackay Cup? Be bold, be brave and be noticed! After all, Mackay Cup only comes around once a year, so make it a great one and stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons!

HANDBAG ESSENTIALS: Three words ladies – makeup, bobby pins and bandaids. And if you can squeeze in some ballet flats for the end of the day, do it!

BACKING A WINNER: Don’t forget to take a pen to mark down your tips in the race book. There’s nothing worse than making it to the front of the tote line and forgetting who you’re backing.

COME ARMED WITH CASH: Whilst ATM facilities are available, remember to bring plenty of cash to avoid unnecessary queues as most race day facilities are cash only.

DRINK TICKETS, DRINK TICKETS: This year, look out for our roving drink ticket sellers. They will be roaming the lawns and public areas selling drink tickets on the spot for your convenience. We hate queues as much as you do, so look out for them on the day – they will also be selling race books.

RESPECT OTHERS AND DRINK RESPONSIBLY: Everyone likes to indulge on race day but make sure you have fun, respect other race goers and drink responsibly. This makes for a pleasant day for everyone and prevents an embarrassing security escort off the premises.

THE TWO MEN WHO ARE LEADING THE CHARGE FOR REGIONAL TOURISM.

•A

PAUL O’CONNOR, GENERAL MANAGER AT SOUTHERN CROSS AUSTEREO (HOT FM), WAS APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF MACKAY TOURISM IN LATE MARCH. STEPHEN SCHWER, FORMERLY TOURISM DEVELOPMENT MANAGER AT SOUTHERN FLINDERS REGIONAL TOURISM AUTHORITY, WAS APPOINTED GENERAL MANAGER OF MACKAY TOURISM IN APRIL AND STARTED IN THE ROLE MID-MAY.

CORE LIFE SPOKE WITH PAUL AND STEPHEN ABOUT THE NEW DIRECTION FOR MACKAY TOURISM.

Q: What drew you to Mackay Tourism? PC: I was asked by the board in March 2013 to accept a nomination to rejoin Mackay Tourism, which of course I did. I see tourism as a very important pillar in the Mackay community along with mining support and agriculture. SS: First of all, the position (general manager). It was exactly the kind of role I was looking for. Secondly, it was the region. My wife and I have always wanted to live in the tropics. The Mackay region is beautiful. Q: Paul, what made Stephen stand out from other candidates for General Manager? PC: We were looking for someone who could bring energy to the region, someone with a fresh set of eyes to promote the assets that we have in the Mackay-Isaac region. After studiously going through 25 applications, Stephen was the standout candidate.

environmentally sustainable adventure tourism, all of which are relevant here too. Q: What are your top priorities while serving Mackay Tourism? PC: Now that we’ve appointed a General Manager, we’re looking at the new opportunities and strategies to enable us to better deliver services to stakeholders in the 21st century. SS: Mackay Tourism is a membership, sponsorship and government funded organisation and so I need to ensure members are getting value for money. It’s important to continue product development, such as the Mackay Tourism Opportunities Plan, and there’s a lot we can do to welcome more tourists into the region. Q: What is your vision for the Mackay region?

Q: Stephen, what will you bring to Mackay?

PC: I want Mackay to have a vibrant tourism and leisure industry. I want to see opportunities for people who don’t believe that they’re in the tourism industry to benefit from an influx of tourists in the area.

SS: I’ve got a background in tourism infrastructure, product development and tourism marketing. I’ve worked on industrial, food and wine, and

SS: I want Mackay to be a top of mind tourist destination within the Great Barrier Reef region. There’s a lot of untapped potential.

feature THE CERTIFICATE IV IN ENGINEERING PROGRAM HAS BEEN OPERATING FOR 6 MONTHS NOW AND I THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO TAKE STOCK OF WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED. With just under 100 tradesmen (fitters, boilermakers and electricians) in the Bowen Basin taking part, the majority have completed their Recognition of Prior Learning and now moving into the GAP training phase. Incentives are now flowing back to the companies and students with around $395,000 going back into company budgets and $63,200 being paid to students. This successful program is achieving all milestones we have set. For all companies still sitting on the fence, I urge you to take the plunge and use this opportunity to up skill your workforce, encourage staff retention and take advantage of the funds on offer to do it. Now is the time because programs of this quality do not last forever. In all my years of adult education, I have not seen anything that matches its’ value or potential. things your can learn from THOSE LABELLED AS ‘GEN Y’ (1981-2000) OFTEN GET A BAD WRAP IN THE WORKPLACE. THIS GENERATION OF COMPUTER BABIES SEEMS TO HAVE A WORK ETHIC COMPLETELY OPPOSITE TO THAT OF GENERATION X AND BABY BOOMERS. BUT RATHER THAN POUT, “THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN IN MY DAY,” CAN WE LOOK TO THE NEXT GENERATION TO TEACH US OLD DOGS SOME NEW TRICKS?

HERE’S HOW GEN Y’S MOST NOTORIOUS TRAITS CAN HELP YOUR BUSINESS THRIVE.

Gen Y’s are renowned for applying for jobs that are above their level of skills and experience, something previous generations would rarely do for fear of embarrassment. This may be seen as over confidence, but couldn’t we all do with a little ‘stepping outside the comfort zone’? Those who take risks often stand out, and this goes for business too.

It may seem Gen Y are overly selfish. But are they just self focused enough to do what it takes to succeed? While other generations are looking after everyone else’s business, Gen Y is doing what it takes to get ahead, fast. That includes looking to your competitors for a job that pays more.

Lesson: Step into new territory that you may think is ‘out of your league’. Ask your Gen Y team members what they would do when tackling new projects or clients.

Lesson: look inward at your business for opportunities to enhance your offerings or service. Give your Gen Y staff a chance to help identify ways to improve your business, it will play to their sense of selfimportance and, allow them to be creative.

Gen Y are particularly optimistic about the future. They look for the silver lining and have confidence that a solution will present itself. Lesson: Know that all challenges are opportunities; ask your Gen Y staff how they see the problem. Engage them in creating solutions that will make them feel part of something bigger and increase the likelihood of them staying put for while.

With the rapid changes in technology, who better to turn to for the latest smart phone app, software or social media platform than your own staff. It may take the rest of us months to learn how to enhance our businesses through Facebook, Pinterest or Instagram, but your Gen Y staff are already onto it. Lesson: Rather than chastising Gen Y for wasted time on social media, encourage them to present to you regularly on the latest in technology and how people are communicating.

FOREBODE, CEO DOMINATE THE BUSINESS BATTLESPACE: recent reports show that retail customers are spending an average $50 more per transaction here than they were a year ago! The number of people available to spend hasn’t changed significantly, but their interest in obtaining value has. If you’re running a business, it’s your duty to dominate the competition. You have an obligation to succeed, and must be obsessed with that outcome. As a retired combat soldier, I see the marketplace as simply another battlespace, and I’m ready to defend my territory! In contrast, many people have decided to blame the economy for their diminishing customer relationships, for their limited or non-existent market presence, and for their failure to ‘close’ with sales prospects. These people are showing signs of BS (Battle Shock). If you are not doing well, the reality is your competition is doing it better than you in some way. Their tactics are stronger, their arsenal better 36 www.corelife.com.au

equipped, and their frontline personnel more skilled. Time to fight back! The business battlespace is a noisy, dangerous place, where your livelihood is at risk. To succeed you must burst through that noise and be noticed. You have to be bigger, smarter, louder… whatever, but it has to be real. Pretenders don’t survive in combat. You have to use the available intelligence to create strategies with substance. Most importantly, no matter what business you’re in, you’re in the business of people. They’re either on your side, or they’re spending somewhere else. Win them back! Build excellence in sales and customer service. Use systemisation and automation to improve efficiency. Finally, communicate it to your troops. Call us now, and we will help you fight a better fight. From gathering intelligence to executing strategies and training your troops; we can help. Forebode… bad news for your competitors!

AIRLIE FITNESS, OWNER

It started with the chin-up. Wendy Whibley, registered nurse, personal trainer, fitness instructor, gym owner and mother of three daughters, simply wanted to be able to pull herself up to her chin. Little did Wendy know that her goal would lead her to a career in fitness. Wendy and her husband Corey own and manage Airlie Fitness. She teaches several fitness classes such as Group Step® and Group Power®, runs challenges and does personal training sessions. She brought the group fitness classes to Airlie to offer her clients something new and different. “Soon we’ll be taking on Les Mills Grit Strength and Grit Cardio, which is high intensity functional training for those who want to take their training to the next level.” When she has time, Wendy does weight training. She can do 10 chin-ups now and she’s working on the next goal, bench-pressing her body weight. “I train myself two to three times a week. I break it down to legs and core on one day and then chest and back on another,” said Wendy. “I only do cardio in classes.” What sets Wendy apart is her expertise – as a “trainer’s trainer” for Body Training Solutions, she teaches other trainers to be group fitness instructors. She has years of experience she applies to every group she trains, her personal training sessions, and in helping mentor new trainers to succeed. How does Wendy juggle family life with work? “Our rule is family first and fitness second,” she told CORE Life. “And I’ve got a very supportive husband. We both care for our children and train our bodies. Our fitness is equally important to each other.” Between the family and the gym, Wendy fits in nursing shifts when she can. www.corelife.com.au 37

There is an exciting buzz around the Any Signs and Printing (ASAP) office this month. Not only has the company secured some major signage contracts throughout the Bowen Basin and Coalfields, but also the entire team are thrilled to announce the return of the original owner and Operations Manager Paul Douthwaite, or better know as “Douth” to his mates. “Having Paul back on the team is instrumental to the continued expansion of the company. Over the last 12 months we have not only focused on the growth of the company, but also the growth of our infrastructure. This positions us perfectly for an easy transition into what is set to be a huge year for ASAP. “Any business owner will tell you, that you are only as good as the people who work for you, and I can happily say that with the addition of our Italian car wrap guru and print manager Anthony Palma, Amy Kerr joining 38 www.corelife.com.au

MORANBAH DISCOUNT TYRES AND MECHANICAL, OWNERS

Imagine cruising to an island where only wallabies and shorebirds live, where there’s no mobile reception and the sandy beach will have only your footprints! Soon Carolyn and Jamie Fritz, owners and managers of Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical Services Pty Ltd, will be living this dream. Carolyn and Jamie recently bought a boat that they moor at Airlie Beach Marina so that they can sail away to refresh and recharge.

couple who expanded their business to two locations last year. Carolyn manages the mechanical and the auto-electrical service centre. Jamie manages the tyre shop and the tyre solid fill service for underground earth moving vehicles. He’s often the first one to arrive and the last one to leave. “We’re really hands on. People often don’t realise that he’s the business owner. He gets down and dirty like the rest of his staff,” said Carolyn.

Buying the boat was a big move for Carolyn and Jamie, who have only taken two vacations in the last eight years. “We want to be able to get away so that we can keep fresh minds for our business,” said Carolyn, who often works weekends in addition to full-time during the week. “We want to see Hamilton Island, Hayman Island and Whitehaven Beach.”

Carolyn and Jamie have lived in Moranbah for over 30 years and put their five children through school in the booming mining town. Three of their children are working in the mining industry and their youngest is in Grade 10. “We spend every chance we can with our children,” said Carolyn. “We love going to the movies together, camping and of course, being on the water in our boat.”

Some downtime on the Great Barrier Reef is well-deserved for the Moranbah

F REDHOTBLUE OWNER DIRECTOR O

“If you are going to dream, it may as well be big!” This philosophy has been a driving force behind the personal and professional life of redhotblue Owner Director, Jody Euler. 16 years ago, Jody started redhotblue from her parent’s spare room with the intent of being able to create without limitations, provide an inspirational work environment for creative professionals usually only found in the cities and offer unique solutions for clients to stand out from their competitors and really gain results. In this time, Jody has won multiple business and creative awards, sat on professional and volunteer committees, acted as a professional mentor and built a team of people as driven and aspiring as her. It is not uncommon to see Jody step into the office dressed in something zany, her hair a flaming red and a spring in her step regardless of what challenges the day may have presented. No ideas are off limits and many clients have received an array of promotional materials created by the company that have left lasting impressions. From a rock video with the crew as the band, popcorn boxes as ice breakers in board meetings and hand delivered cupcakes, all are part of the redhotblue way. As a mother of two girls [7 and 4], it’s a daily juggling act. Her eldest daughter was diagnosed at the age of 3 with Asperger’s Syndrome and Jody has made it her mission to ensure no stone is unturned to assist her in living with Asperger’s. Combining her talent in design and love of creative expression, Jody has been able to develop resources for her daughter to deal with many of the challenges she faces each day.

Which is where the idea to run a Mackay Asperger’s awareness event was born, the Discovering Asperger’s High Tea Luncheon. To be held 26th October, the luncheon is busily being organised by the event management arm of redhotblue – redevents – and more information will be available on www.redevents.com.au closer to the date.

feature Stepping into the redhotblue office, it’s pretty easy to see that this crew are very different from other businesses. A buzzing environment of colour, creativity and variety – the troop of redhotblue are every bit as eclectic as their workplace. Much like the Greatest Show on Earth, it is the diversity of roles and personalities at redhotblue that make the business stand out from the rest. But instead of running away with the circus, the staff turned to redhotblue to push the boundaries and be the best in their chosen vocation. Founded in 1997, redhotblue is an award-winning design, marketing and digital agency based in Mackay that has been recognised on local, state and national levels for their creativity and strategic campaigns. Coming from a variety of backgrounds, talents, experiences and nations, the redhotblue troop enjoy taking the everyday and doing what no one else has done before. But staying cutting edge in the creative world takes a lot of work. This is why ongoing professional development at leading training events and well recognised industry conferences throughout the country is such an important part of the redhotblue corporate culture. Being ahead of the pack also means expanding as needed to ensure clients are receiving expert service that gets results.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY: WHITSUNDAY PHOTOGRAPHER

With another new act joining soon, redhotblue will once again be hitting a new level in the design and digital worlds. Adding to the multicultural mix, redhotblue’s two new staff members are both leaders in their field. Each has extensive experience and well developed skills, having worked with multi-national brands and demonstrating an indepth awareness for getting the most out of each platform. Locally, redhotblue have worked with clients of all sizes and within all industries – each one looking for a new way to define their organisation and not only reach their target audience, but to engage them as well. After all, when it comes to attracting attention and surprising the audience – who better than redhotblue?

With locations in Cannonvale, Bowen, Mission Beach and Bundaberg, North Queensland Glass has steadily grown since Trent founded the business in 2008. A glazier by trade, Trent moved his family to Airlie Beach from Sydney with the intention of sub-contracting for a six-month working holiday. After Trent got two major contracts, he decided to see where the town would take him and his family. As the business grew, Mei jumped ship, as she put it, to assist her husband and his growing team in the office. “Trent kept coming to my work to use the fax machine,” she laughed. 42 www.corelife.com.au

These days Mei and Trent service a wide range of clientele from major insurance companies to builders, resorts and residences. “We’ve mastered the middle range. We’re small enough to look after homeowners but we’re also big enough to handle major projects,” said Trent on the dynamics of his business. Trent and Mei consider their team integral to their success. “We would not be able to do what do every day without them. We share our experiences and expertise with every project.” To balance their demanding work schedule with family life, Mei and Trent keep a strict routine. Sport is a major part of their family - Trent and their sons play rugby and Mei plays netball - Sunday is family day. “We have also learned to live off three-hours sleep a night,” said Trent, showing they do whatever it takes for a thriving family and business.

Born and bred in Airlie Beach, it makes sense that Mike Muller is passionate about the outdoors, and health and fitness. The McDonald’s Whitsunday and Bowen Licensee takes advantage of the region’s mountainous terrain and the Whitsunday Islands to maintain an active lifestyle, and he supports his community to do the same. Mike said he always focused on leading an active lifestyle with a balanced diet, even before he became involved with McDonald’s in 1996. PHOTOGRAPHY BY: WHITSUNDAY PHOTOGRAPHER. “In 1996 I saw an advert in the local paper about opportunities to become a McDonald’s Licensee and I couldn’t wait to start training. I opened my first restaurant in Airlie Beach in June 1998. “Despite working long hours I am able to maintain a healthy lifestyle by choosing healthier options on the McDonald’s menu. “The burgers are my favourite and sometimes I treat myself to fries or an occasional sundae. I also like to eat the wraps – many people don’t realise they can ask for any burger to be changed to a wrap,” Mike said. “I’ve never been fanatical about my diet but I have the attitude of having everything in moderation. “I stay active by riding my mountain bike around the local Hydeaway Bay area and visit the gym before work in the mornings. I also love to paddle my board around the local bay or go for a dive when I’m out on the water. “There is no better feeling than being fit and healthy, especially once you’re over 50. “Each year I challenge myself to achieve a new fitness goal and this year I will be participating in Tough Mudder – a 20 km obstacle course on the Sunshine Coast. Next year my wife Jane and I plan to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.” In 2012 Mike and Jane won the McDonald’s Outstanding Community Contributor award for their involvement in the local Whitsunday and Bowen communities. www.corelife.com.au 43

REAL ESTATE AGENT In one year, Dee Mangion from Mackay Regional Real Estate will be dancing in the streets of Rio. Or sashaying across a Havana ballroom. Or tangoing in a Peruvian club. Dee is addicted to salsa dance. Right now she’s a beginner, but for her next holiday, Dee plans to travel to Central or South America to dance with best. “It’s the music and the people that attracted me to salsa,” said Dee. “It gets the endorphins going.”

Dee moved to Mackay from country Victoria over four years ago. “I was drawn to the sun and the sea,” she said. When Dee moved North, she transitioned to a career in real estate from establishing and operating a home wares and garden wares business. Even though Dee spends her days selling houses instead of decorating them, her “French country” style shines through her Slade Point cottage.

When Dee isn’t showing homes or practicing salsa steps, she meditates on the beach. For Dee, meditation is one part of a balanced lifestyle which includes exercising at the gym and dining with friends. Living well is important to Dee. As a mother and grandmother, she has both herself and her family in mind.

At Queensland Country you’ll find that even their staff love them and making time to have fun at work is part of their core values. Their key point of difference to other banks is their people focus. Those who bank with the credit union say they get the sort of genuine hospitality they can’t find in a big bank and those who come to work with the business tend to stay.

QLD COUNTRY MANAGERS

As a customer owned bank Queensland Country has been supporting the banking needs of Queenslanders since 1971. They have two well established branches in Mackay and 21 additional branches throughout the state.

Queensland Country has provided over $4 million in community support initiatives across regional Queensland since 2004. Their focus on supporting youth with financial literacy programs has grown from work they have done as major sponsors of the North Queensland Cowboys, educating the under 20s on money management. Their competitive savings, lending and insurance products are delivered through staff who know how to focus on service and they also have one of Queensland’s top rated health funds. Your local managers Bob and Jodie would love to help you manage your budget and achieve your goals so call to book in a time to chat with them today, 1800 075 078. 44 www.corelife.com.au

WE ALL KNOW HOW FAST-PACED OUR WORLD IS. WE USE DEVICES THAT WE COULD NOT EVEN PICTURE BEFORE, AND TECHNOLOGY JUST SURROUNDS US. CAN YOU IMAGINE BREAKING YOUR SMART PHONE? WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITHOUT YOUR CONTACTS, NOTES, MUSIC OR PICTURES? IT IS A FRIGHTENING THOUGHT, ISN’T IT?

Casphone knows how to ease the tension and solve the problem: besides their wide range of accessories and protective cases, they are specialised in repair, service and customisation of smart phones and tablets. “Casphone’s Angels” tell CORE Life more about how they help everyday Queenslanders in smart device emergencies. Q: How did the company start? Kornelia, Executive Director: In 2009, when I was visiting friends in Sydney with my husband Casper, we noticed how popular the first iPhone was. You could see colourful phone cases basically in every shop. We agreed that people should be able to get them in the regional areas as well, so we started our small business in Rockhampton first. We recognised the demand for our service with the growing range of smart phones and then had a chance to open more kiosks and shops, first in Mackay, then in Townsville and last, but not at least, in Cairns. Q: So Casphone is a chain of stores? Niki, Regional Manager: Yes, Casphone has 10 shops at the moment all over Central and North Queensland in the biggest shopping centres. It is

really easy and convenient for our customers to find us, and even more so since we launched our new website (casphone.com.au) with online services. Q: Casphone seems like a young and energetic company, how is it to work as part of its’ team? Fay, Mackay Area Manager: It is vibrating and constantly exciting, I just love it. Every day brings something new and challenging. I strongly believe that Casphone’s point of difference over other companies, and a key of the success, is that we combine the Australian values with multi-cultural diversity to achieve quality service. Q: Did Casphone need to face any special challenges? Kornelia, Executive Director: Of course we’ve had plenty, but maybe the most memorable one was Cyclone Yasi in Townsville. We`d just opened our first kiosk in Willows two days before it struck. We were forced to close for a week, so you can say it was a very bumpy and dreadful start. After the weather cleared, the shops were flooded with customers, and everyone was busy helping each other. It was a heart-warming experience seeing how Queenslanders stayed together and overcame the crisis. It made me proud to be one of them.

feature AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS, “AUSTRALIAN SOCIAL TRENDS” - MINING TOWNS An article put out in April by the ABS via their regular “Australian Social Trends” on mining towns is misleading for potential investors as the statistics referred to are no longer relevant. I continually tell my clients not to believe anything they read or see on the TV without doing their own research. This report is dangerous because it is based on old statistics and does not reflect reality. The ABS has defined a mining boom town as one where at least a sixth of all employed people work in the mining industry and where local population growth exceeded 2% per annum over the last five years. Their top 10 towns are; Karratha, Newman and Port Headland (in WA), Roxby Downs (in S.A.) and Weipa, Dysart, Moranbah, Middlemount, Clermont and Emerald (all in QLD).

and the average cost of rent is $700 p.w. A year ago, yes, but not in our current economic climate. The latest figures on houses for sale and rent in some of our towns in the Central Highlands as at the end of April were: Moranbah, $146 for sale $185 for rent; Dysart, $107 for sale, $165 for rent; Blackwater, $217 for sale $110 for rent and Emerald, $310 for sale $251 for rent. New houses and units are being built for the investment market and this is where it is very concerning as investors are making decisions based on incorrect information. It is even more dangerous when some of this incorrect out of date information is coming from the Federal Government.

According to the report, the average hourly rate for those working in oil and gas extraction is $75 and coal mining $54. The rate of employment average just 2.2%, a full 60% less than the country wide average of 5.6%

feature WHAT IF YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO DRIVE TO MACKAY OR EMERALD FROM MORANBAH TO GET YOUR CAR SERVICED? CAROLYN FRITZ, A MORANBAH RESIDENT FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS, PUT HERSELF IN THE SHOES OF FELLOW LOCALS AND ASKED HERSELF THAT QUESTION. HER ANSWER? OPEN MORANBAH DISCOUNT TYRES AND MECHANICAL.

Since August 2005, Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical has provided fast and comprehensive servicing for consumer and commercial vehicles. In 2012 they expanded, opening a tyre shop on Mills Avenue and keeping the mechanical and auto electrical service centre on Bacon Street. They even offer pick up and drop off service for both local residents and mine sites. Their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical has won the Moranbah Traders Association (MTA) Excellence in Service Award four years running and excellence in mining/ manufacturing two years in a row. It’s the simple things, like their goal of providing same day turn around for mining companies, that set Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical apart.

50 www.corelife.com.au

For the first five years, Carolyn ran the business on her own. “I was, and still am, the only female in town that owns a predominantly male business,” she said. She started with 4 hoists and 9 staff.

When the business grew, Carolyn’s husband Jamie, an electrician with 27 years of experience in the mining industry, left the mining industry in 2010 to help with the expansion of the business. “He looks after solid filling for underground earthmoving equipment and the tyre shop. I look after the mechanical and auto-electrical,” said Carolyn. They now have 16 hoists and plan to expand based on what locals need.

Before buying Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical, Carolyn worked for BHP for 15 years. When she was at the Goonyella-Riverside site, Carolyn was the light vehicle coordinator. “I looked after 100 vehicles onsite,” she said. “That’s what led me to purchase our tyre and mechanical business.” During her time in the mines, Carolyn came across adversity. “I was the first female administration assistant promoted to a senior position at the mine and had a hard and fast learning curve to adapt to,” she said. “But I brought all my learnings from working in the mining industry and the training I got there, to my business.”

Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical founded their business based on what their community called for. “People were screaming for a service that was comparable to Mackay or Emerald service centres,” said Carolyn. “If they bought a new car, people thought they had to take it back to the dealer in either of those cities to have it serviced so that they wouldn’t void their warranties.”

In addition to mechanical, auto-electrical services and tyre services, Carolyn and Jamie offer solid fill, a polyurethane filling suitable for the tyres of earthmoving vehicles such as driftrunners, eimcos, shuttlecars, PJBs, ancillary equipment, graders, backhoes, forklifts, tractors, drills and trailers. They are the only accredited solid filling company in the Central Highlands and currently service 9 mine sites.

Traveling for hours to have a vehicle serviced is a thing of the past. “You won’t void your warranty if you service your vehicle with us,” said Carolyn. “We want to help people to keep their money local. While they get serviced with us, customers can go to the local shopping centre to pay their bills, buy their groceries and get their hair done, rather than going to Mackay to do it.”

Carolyn and Jamie attribute their success to their staff. “We would not be where we are today without our staff – they are our most important assets and we try very hard to reward them and include them in our lives during and after work,” said Carolyn. During the housing boom, Carolyn and Jamie bought properties so that staff and their families could afford to rent in the once highly expensive town. www.corelife.com.au 51

IN A MAN’S WORLD

Her down to earth approach makes the complexity of vehicles understandable. “Sometimes you can be bamboozled with terminology and things that are wrong with your car. I strive to make it simple, clear and honest. I drive this home with my staff; we say what we do and we do what we say.”

SPECIALITY SERVICES “WE’RE THE ONLY SERVICE CENTRE IN MORANBAH THAT’S A ONE-STOP-SHOP,” SAID CAROLYN. Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical have a computerised laser alignment machine for aligning wheels, a computerised scan tool for resetting and detecting faults and extensive electrical parts. They offer auto electrical and air conditioning repairs. Tyre services offered by Carolyn, Jamie and their staff include Dunlop Super Dealers Australia, Tyres 4 U, Bridgestone Earthmoving, Bearcat Tyres, Michelin Tyres and Yokohama Network Dealers. What kind of tyres, you wonder? Their tyre range includes underground mining tyres that can be solid filled, medium and light vehicle tyres and truck tyres. Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical is equipped with a 5 ton, 7m tray Iveco Truck with a Hiab for pickup and delivery of tyres, a 3 ton Canter Truck for smaller deliveries. Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical have recently become a Holden sub-agency. “We’ve just done a two-day course for Holden with 16 of our tradesmen. We can now service Holden Colorados as well as all other makes and models of vehicles,” said Carolyn. They’re also a Repco authorised service outlet. “As a Repco Authorised Agent, we carry out Repco Inspections. You can choose either a 62 point safety check or a comprehensive vechile condition report,” said Carolyn. To top it off, Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical is the main and preferred repairer for BMA and Orix as well as Lease Plan, Fleet Card, Toyota Finance, Fleet plus and Custom Fleet Australia and all other major leasing companies. “We still have room to expand with the properties that we own based on the demand on the town,” said Carolyn. 52 www.corelife.com.au

feature FOR CAROLYN AND JAMIE, BUSINESS IS LIKE A FEEDBACK LOOP. LOCALS SUPPORT THEIR SERVICE CENTRE AND SHOP THEN THEY GIVE BACK TO LOCALS.

Moranbah Discount Tyres and Mechanical donate thousands each year to the community facilities in Moranbah. “Last year we donated $38,000 to the town charities and local clubs; Leagues Club, Golf Club, Bowls Club, and as many sporting teams as we possibly can,” said Carolyn. They also support the MSHS Get Set for Work program and sponsor a V8 Supercar as part of the Dunlop Super Dealer Group. On 13-14 July, they will bring V8 super car driver Will Davidson to Moranbah for their car show, “When the times get tough, the tough get going.” Gold coin donation entry fees and car entry fees will be donated to CQ Rescue. “We’re going to have a dinner with Will on the Friday night, 12th July, for our VIP customers,” said Carolyn. The best part? You don’t need to drive to Mackay to be part of the action. For more information, visit www.tyres-mechanical.com.au. www.corelife.com.au 53

DIRECTOR, CQ MINE TRAINING, EMERALD

MANAGER, RESOURCES RISK SOLUTIONS

CEO, FOREBODE

Training for a Safer Future.

Resources Risk Solutions or RRS, is a Registered Training Organisation based in Paget Mackay and delivers industry training to all industries.

Most people have heard of an ‘Elevator Pitch’. Less than 10% of businesses I talk to though, actively use one as part of their sales and marketing strategy.

Training is a major and mandatory part of our work and working environment to ensure all employers and employees are competent when conducting day to day business in their field of work, especially in the industries. Without having the correct training, we see employers in the industry today all round Australia, having action taken against them for not complying in areas that require training.

I met a business owner called ‘Greg’ while flying from Auckland to Sydney. The tag line on Greg’s business card said ‘Fixing Freight Costs’, so I asked him “what do you do?”

CQ Mine Training is a family run and owned company that started in 2011. Stephen Moloney, the Director of CQMT, is a qualified trainer who has over 15 years of experience in the mining industry all over Australia. CQMT services Central Queensland towns such as Emerald, Moranbah, Middlemount, Dysart and Mackay, and is looking to expand to a wider area to deliver a higher standard of training Australia wide. If you are looking for a career change or seeking employment within the mining industry, CQMT can assist you to obtain the mandatory competencies to work on a mine site. These competencies are required to ensure you are working in accordance with the Coal Mining Acts & Regulations. If you are currently employed in the mining industry and are looking to upskill your current competencies, or looking to further your career, CQMT can help you. CQMT not only offers training; we also provide specialised consultancy with all matters that relate to safety and training and does so for a large range of mining companies including high risk work licenses. For more information, contact our friendly team at CQMT.

Our training here at RRS is designed to deliver the know-how and compliance for the job and the workers. Our trainers have massive industry experience with years of on the job employment, safety and training to ensure the right messages are conveyed when delivering training for the client. We understand the needs to ‘go to work’ in today’s working world with the emphasis on safety and training and the knowledge required to be deemed a competent person. We understand to be able to go to work, what are the limits and the basic knowledge that needs to be delivered to the worker in whatever level the requirement is. We strive to ensure that you have at least the basics when leaving the course and cater to help the trainee when on course to ensure you have the required outcomes. Our staff are hard working, even down to the administration, with customer service and compliance and development. Give us a call today to find out more.

Greg sheepishly said “we do stuff with freight”. He seemed embarrassed. Here I was, a captive audience, inviting Greg to tell me about his business, and he stalled! What Greg was missing was an elevator pitch; that thirty second statement that makes people say “tell me more”. You can have the greatest products or services in the world, but unless people know how they will benefit from your business, they won’t buy from you. A great elevator pitch should do the following: 1. Describe the problem; 2. Highlight your solution; 3. Give proof that it works. Greg is a business owner, not a salesman! We teach people like Greg how to connect with, and more effectively influence their target audience. By the time we’d landed in Sydney I’d helped Greg create a new pitch. He “guarantees clients a 20% reduction in shipping costs.” Greg gained so much confidence from our mid-air workshop that he closed a deal with a complete stranger before leaving the airport! Problem solved.

TOO BUSY TO RUN ERRANDS? RYAN BOLES, A 22-YEAR-OLD MACKAY MAN, DOES THE ODD JOBS YOU DON’T HAVE TIME FOR. HE TAKES GREEN WASTE AND GENERAL RUBBISH TO THE DUMP. HE PURCHASES AND DELIVERS GROCERIES. HE EVEN COLLECTS MAIL AND POSTS PARCELS.

What’s special about Ryan? He runs a successful business, Bolzy’s Go4 Services, despite his disabilities. Ryan is legally blind and cannot speak. He has cerebral palsy and has been diagnosed with autism. Even one of those disabilities could be enough to hinder most people, but not Ryan. Before Bolzy’s Go4 Services, Ryan couldn’t find even volunteer work, says his mother Michelle Boles. She set up the business to give her son a job, and more importantly, a sense of purpose. “He gets up in the middle of the night, comes into my room and gives me his work shirt. That says that he’s really happy and that work is what he wants to do,” said Michelle, former nurse and Ryan’s full-time carer. When he’s on the job, Ryan is accompanied by one of two support workers who drive his ute and explain tasks. “They communicate through body language and talk to him all the time. You can tell him what you want done and he’ll do it,” said Michelle.

to help and the rate they charge is really reasonable,” said Deb Rae, a Change and Growth Facilitator at Radiance. Bolzy’s Go4 Services may grow. “My aim is to be able to expand the business so that we can build a shed, get a can crusher/compactor and something to help us sort the cans. We want to employ somebody else with a disability and their support worker to help Ryan with his jobs,” said Michelle. “I encourage other people with a disability to follow Ryan’s lead. Don’t let your disability affect your abilities,” said Michelle. If you would like to hire Ryan or find out more about Bolzy’s Go4 Services, visit www.bolzysgo4services.com.au.

Ryan and his crew do a variety of jobs, such as collecting cans. Ryan has about 50 can sites around town at pubs, clubs and businesses and he’s always looking for more. He also walks dogs. “Ryan has been walking my dog for some time. I’m really happy with the service he provides. Him and his worker take good care of my dog. They like him as much as I do. JULY 23 - AUGUST 22

Your work is getting to a stage where you should ask for help. Someone in authority who recognises your potential will be doing battle on your behalf. You could be changing address too. Something which has bothered you in the past will now be cleared up. Good news from far away will also help to make this a very happy time. Things that might look mighty big in the distance seem to get smaller as you get nearer their happening. Anticipating problems could just bring them on so keep smiling and think positive.

VIRGO

MARCH 21- APRIL 20

Looks like your hard work in the past will be rewarded handsomely. Recognition in the right circles will help your career and being seen in the right places will also assist you. This could be the best period of your life for a long time. A VIP could be helpful in career affairs and lovers more affectionate. Do not try and force issues with loved ones. Consider your partner’s feelings. Keep a close watch on your valuables.

TAURUS

AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 23

Big plans about travel and some moves could affect you in a surprising way. Try to be a little bit more tactful with loved ones. This will avoid a lot of headaches later on. Your partner may be going through a difficult time. Many could be meeting the partner of their dreams and have a rollicking good time. Something you have been planning for a while is now coming to fruition. A debt owing will now be paid to you.

APRIL 21- MAY 20

Big plans all around you and they should affect you somewhat. Do not let your emotions get the better of you, take stock of what it is you really want. You will be looking forward to a break from the usual and if you can get away, it could be a good revitalisation for you. Financial matters should not give you too much trouble. You are in a much better position to make up your mind about someone and this could also affect your career matters. Try to keep an open mind about other people’s ideas.

for the girls BEFORE Julie came into our salon feeling dull and boring leading up to her big 50th birthday. We decided to give her a new, fresh and exciting style cut. She has an extremely busy lifestyle, working full time, running a household as well as having a very active exercise regime. She needed something easy and light and that didn’t take hours to maintain. Turning 50 was a catalyst for the change and she was happy for anything we suggested. We decided to give Julie a young, stylish pixie cut which would be extremely easy for her to manage. The style is slightly asymetric being shorter on one side. Julie enjoys her hair being lighter so we cleaned her blonde with a beautiful beige toner and applied a slightly deeper caramel blonde on the roots. Her hair can now be finished with a natural finger dry and using Keune powder in the root area we could give it lift and texture without weighing the hair down or making it feel greasy, Finally Julie had a beautiful face of make up using Napoleon products. We used natural tones on her eyes and added lots of black lashes for depth. This is a perfect look for natural day wear and the look could be pumped up for night time by simply adding darker shadow to the eyes and a brighter colour on the lip. Julie was thrilled with her new look which she said is helping her to head into her 50’s full of confidence and excitement. Is your current hairstyle weighing you down? HERE ARE A FEW LITTLE TIPS TO HELP YOU KEEP CONTROL OF YOUR BODY AND MIND THIS WINTER. FACT 1: It is easier to get in shape during winter time due to the heat energy your body produces for warmth. TIP: Hit the ground running - set your alarm away from your bed or in another room so that you have to get out of bed to turn it off.

FACT 2: You will achieve more in 3 x 30 minute functionally focused weight training sessions per week than 8-10 hours of walking. Train with a friend so you have someone you are accountable to for not turning up and vice versa! TIP: Example; there are 168 hours in a week – 56 for sleep = 112 – 84 for work = 28 – 1.5 to train = 26.5 to do whatever you like. NO excuse. 24- hour gym means 24hour access, NO excuses.

FACT 3: Water increases metabolism, helps control your appetite and is the number one assistant in fat loss. TIP: Drink warm water. Add honey, lemon and ginger to replace coffee or tea. Staying hydrated means getting lean and staying lean.

WINTER BONUS SPECIAL DEAL: Generations 24 Hour Health & Wellness Team will construct a personal, scientifically verified training program and education package FOR YOU. Get back in control of your body, mind and life this winter with the experts at Generations. Phone today 4987 7319. AMY PRICE BELIEVES BEAUTY IS ABOUT THE INNER YOU BUT CONFIDENCE IS ABOUT HOW YOU SEE YOURSELF. Amy wants people to be confident about themselves whether it is having the perfect smile, helping men have a full head of hair, tighten and tone their face, helping women be self confident by improving their breast profile or removing stubborn fat from certain areas. Amy is Customer Relations Manager for Mackay’s first medical tourism company, ID Rejuvenation Travel. Her helpful team refer local people for procedures in Thailand with accredited, world class hospitals at a fraction of what it would cost in Australia, with the bonus of a resort holiday. “The cost saving is a big help as our clients can save 30%, 50% or even 70% off the cost of the same procedure in Australia.” “We have Personalised Rejuvenation Packages for solo travel or with a partner, and Group Travel is popular so our clients can share a life changing experience. And we arrange a seamless itinerary for you so you can relax and enjoy your medical getaway”. Amy says some people are hesitant about travelling overseas for procedures but that is why ID is here to refer them to accredited, world class Thai hospitals with the same accreditation as over 15,000 hospitals in the United States. ID refers for dental, breast augmentation, cosmetic surgery, hair restoration, fertility treatment, eye surgery, prosthetics and dialysis while on holiday. It’s wonderful to see the confidence someone has when they come back with a new appearance, finally becoming the person that they want to be.

• Irregular periods - too short and the ovaries may have insufficient time to produce a good quality egg for fertilisation. Too long and the ovaries are struggling to produce an egg of sufficient quality. These struggles can be reflected in Follicular Stimulating Hormone (FSH) levels, and AntiMullerian Hormone (AMH) levels. Too short, then too long is a likely strong hormonal imbalance. • Light periods - is an insufficiency of good quality blood to lay down an Endometrium to line the uterus and create a healthy bed of soil for the fertilised egg to grow in.

ARE YOU STRUGGLING TO UNDERSTAND WHY YOU CAN’T HAVE A BABY WHEN YOU WANT? WHEN IT COMES TO ARTIFICIAL REPRODUCTIVE THERAPIES (ART) VERSUS NATURE, SCIENCE WOULD MAKE US BELIEVE THAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, WHEREAS NATURE PROVES THAT IT IS NOT. Knowing the health of your period is a very good start to understanding your natural fertility potential and may assist you in understanding why you are not having your heart’s desires. SO WHAT DO WE NEED TO KNOW? A good quality period should be 26 - 30 days long with 4-7 days of fresh red blood that should arrive without fuss and depart the same way. If you have a period like that then things are looking good, and you could say your menstrual health is excellent. However, if you period is like any of the following then things are out of balance and may be the root cause to your infertility.

the

family

• Heavy periods - too much blood washes everything away, much like trying to grow a crop during a flood. • No periods - can be a major malfunction in the hormones due to being on the pill too long, cysts covering the ovaries preventing ovulation orother reasons. • Rusty or brown coloured menses - this is like poor quality soil in which very little can thrive. • Very dark, purple or clotted menses - this is stagnated blood that breaks down irregularly and is the prime cause of strong period pain and endometriosis. During ART none of these issues are attended to, and artificial insemination goes ahead regardless. Just because you have a fertilised egg in your womb, doesn’t mean that it will grow, or that it can be carried to full term. Attending to your menstrual health before you travel this path can potentially yield far better results and save you a lot of money in the long run. If you would like more information, then give the friendly team at AUSTRALIAN NATURAL FERTILITY a call today.

THE ROJAS SOAKING METHOD

WE HEAR OFTEN ABOUT ALL OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS THAT WE SHOULD BE CAREFUL OF IN CLEANING PRODUCTS, MAKE UPS, SKIN CREAMS, BODY MOISTURISERS, HEAVY METALS ETC. BUT WHAT ABOUT INTERNAL TOXINS THAT WE MANUFACTURE OURSELVES? SUCH AS THE TOXINS STORED IN OUR FAT CELLS, CAUSING INFLAMMATION WHICH HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE NOT JUST WEIGHT ISSUES BUT CHRONIC DISEASE.

Donna, whom I have received my nutritional training from in the Body Ecology Diet for the past 7 years, would regularly say to me when conducting training in Australia, ‘Sue you must come over and I will organize Luis to give you some training as his treatment is like no other, it is his soaking method that is gentle on the colon but very, very effective. For those of you not familiar with The Body Ecology Diet, it has a strong focus on cleansing the bowel to ensure we can set up the right foundation for health for all people, but particularly children on the autism spectrum. Donna, over the years, has seen many colon therapists and experienced many different methods. He is known as the Colon whisperer in some circles and if you try to find him on the internet you may find one article that has been written about him. He has no signage, no telephone listings, not even an email! His clients are high profile actors and actresses who only get to see him through word of mouth and then you might need to wait three months to see him personally. And here I was learning from him and receiving a colonic from him every day for the 9 days while I was there. Having this opportunity to not only listen to his knowledge (30 years

in the health sector) and his progressive thoughts about how we do colon therapy in the 20th century but also have these treatment’s daily, gave me a whole new respect for how the body stores and accumulates waste that becomes toxic and can harbour parasites, worms and bacteria to name a few. To affirm that the body does not self-clean and in fact as we have known for centuries if we don’t get rid of this toxic waste than we certainly have a higher chance of a lower immune system, a bigger chance of disease occurring and to age more rapidly than we need to. Luis talks about making sure we have a ‘clean house”. He is talking about the digestive system, we must clean house, and this is the foundation of health and wellbeing. So I certainly left LA a lot different than when I arrived, not only in my physical health but my mental strength had also been improved, with a renewed vigour to get this age old therapy out into the community so everyone will know the importance of having a ‘clean house”. If you would like to see more of what we store jump onto my facebook Sue Wilson and like Bottoms Up to see some amazing and very recent pictures of the types of matter we store along with the toxicity. Maybe not over dinner though! Or better still come into the clinic so you can see what you may have stored in the depths… or to just CLEAN HOUSE.
