GREAT BARRIER REEF MARINE PARK

WELCOME TO QLD! THE SUNSHINE STATE

Awash with sparkling beaches, vibrant cities and more than 300 annual sunshine hours, Queensland, known as the sunshine state, is truly where Australia shines. With an area of 1,727,000 square kilometres, Queensland is the second largest state in Australia and is five times larger than the United Kingdom! It’s easy to see why the vast inland savannah and endless ribbon of coastline provides visitors with experiences like no other on earth and why it’s not difficult to find your own quiet piece of paradise.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA Queensland is home to more than 4 million people. More than half of Queensland’s population live outside of its state capital, Brisbane, a large proportion in comparison with most of Australia which is highly urbanized. But once you venture out of the city and hit the highway for an epic road trip, lesser-known treasures arise in many of the smaller shires.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA Queensland is home to five of Australia’s 11 World Natural Heritage areas. These include the Scenic Rim National Parks, Fraser Island, Riversleigh Fossil Fields, the Wet Tropics (including Daintree National Park), and one of the great natural Wonders of the World; the Great Barrier Reef. A fascinating place of exceptional beauty, Fraser Island, at 120km in length, is the world’s largest island! It contains more than 100 freshwater lakes all ringed by sand, and the surrounding rainforest is the only rainforest in the world which grows on highelevation sand dunes.

DID YOU KNOW? Mackay is one of the best places in Queensland to see a platypus in the wild. Take a day trip to Eungella National Park and watch this unique duck-billed mammal splash among the water of Broken River.

Continue the journey northward for a taste of the tropics in Townsville. The cosmopolitan city combines federation architecture with an array of top restaurants and boutique shopping. Soak in the coastal vibe with a stroll along The Strand or get close to nature and cuddle a koala at Billabong Sanctuary. Off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is one of the few islands you can drive to. Take your vehicle on the car ferry and explore many of its 23 beautiful bays.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA Magnetic Island was named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770 when the island appeared to affect the magnetic compass on his ship.

Stretching more than 2,300km, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on the planet, the only one big enough to be seen from outer space. It extends over 14 degrees of latitude, from shallow estuarine areas to deep oceanic waters, giving it a vast and complex natural ecosystem.

For a small island, there is much to do on Magnetic Island. Soar above the island in the Red Baron; the only two-passenger, open cockpit bi-plane on floats, in the world. Ride bareback into the ocean on a horse trek or discover koalas in the wild with a bush walk to historic WWII forts.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA

Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef and nestled in-between these two World Heritage areas is the modern mecca of Cairns, Queensland’s most northern tropical city. Laze on a northern beach or explore the rustic artist village of Kuranda by taking a gondola ride above rainforest canopy.

The Great Barrier Reef is explored by more than 2,000,000 visitors every year! The southern Great Barrier Reef begins off the coast of Bundaberg, a region famous for sugar cane production, rum, ginger beer and nesting turtles.

DID YOU KNOW? Located just north of Bundaberg, 1770 is the only town in the world which has a number for a name!

Lieutenant James Cook made the first landfall by a European on what was to become the Discovery Coast and the birthplace of Queensland on May 24, 1770. From the town of 1770 discover Lady Musgrave Island, an island cay with an internal lagoon, unique to the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef parallels the Queensland Coast and is accessible from most destinations. At its heart is the Whitsundays, A string of tropical islands dotted along an idyllic stretch of paradise. The Whitsunday islands are world famous for the luxurious resorts which lay upon them, the azure water which surrounds them as well as the pure white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach and iconic Heart Reef. The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands is Airlie Beach, a backpacking nirvana filled with palm-fringed beaches, waterfront parks and alfresco dining restaurants. It is the epitome of the chilled-out Australian beach lifestyle. A blend of fun in the sun followed by an entertaining night scene. South of the Whitsundays, venture to a place where nature comes naturally. The Mackay region is home to quiet beaches, lesser-known tropical islands and Queensland’s only blue river, the Pioneer. It is one of Australia’s best fishing locations with a selection of tidal creeks, inland dams, mangrove systems and deep-water reefs providing a plethora of fish to hook.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA North Queensland is home to some quirky ‘world’s largest’ items. The world’s largest moth, the Hercules Moth, is found in Northern Queensland with a wingspan of up to 25 centimetres. Lake Echen is home to King fern trees which have the world’s largest fern fronds, up to seven metres long. Inland, Undara National Park has some of the world’s longest and largest lava tube systems. One of the most fascinating areas to explore in Northern Queensland is the Daintree Rainforest. It is the oldest, continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world, thought to be 165 million years old.

DID YOU KNOW? There is an exotic fruit in the Daintree Rainforest known as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It is the only fruit on the planet which tastes like chocolate

pudding, yet it is low in fat and contains more than four times the vitamin

C of an orange; a chocoholics dream come true! You can sample the delicacy at a tropical fruit farm in Cape Tribulation.

With so much to see and do, Queensland is a land of possibility. Gaze upon a star, make a wish and fulfil your dreams during your time in the sunshine state. It’s your time to shine!

He chose a special part of Australia and created Paronella Park. On 5 hectares, beside Mena Creek Falls, he built his castle, picnic area by the falls, tennis courts, bridges, a tunnel, and wrapped it up in an amazing range of 7,500 tropical plants and trees, now a lush rainforest!. It opened to the public in 1935. Paronella Park has received multiple Queensland Tourism awards, is State and National Heritage listed and is a National Trust listed property. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY AT WATERS EDGE ON THE STRAND?

We are from Cairns and we have family living in Ayr so Townsville is a midway point for us, a convenient place to meet in the middle. Before booking we looked them up on Trip Advisor and noticed they had a Trip Advisor certificate of excellence so were confident we would have an enjoyable stay. We are so glad we chose Waters Edge because it is right in the heart of the Strand which is Townsville’s coastal tourist hub. The hotel is literally on the water’s edge! In the middle of the Strand, walking distance to the restaurants, cafes, bars and supermarket. The Strand is a well-designed recreational area with playgrounds for the kids, sports fields for the older kids, splash parks, swimming-pools, all linked together by a leisurely waterfront esplanade.

WHAT WAS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

Our room was a sea view studio apartment and the view was just breath-taking, an uninterrupted panorama out over the stunning Coral Sea and down to the bustling street below. We had a birds-eye view of the whole parade and it made for some excellent people watching! Inside, our room was clean and comfortable. There was a soft armchair, a flat-screen T.V. and reverse- cycle air-conditioning. The apartment has a fully-equipped kitchen with two hot plates, crockery, microwave and a large fridge. The kitchen facilities were excellent and having them meant we could make breakfast

and lunch ourselves and enjoy it on our verandah. This saved us a lot of money during our stay and meant we could splash out on our evening meals.

WHAT FACILITIES ARE THERE AT WATERS EDGE ON THE STRAND?

Our favourite place to relax was poolside! Both families could gather together, cool down in the water and enjoy the ambience of our own private pool set amidst the tropical gardens. There is plenty of seating and it is elevated, looking out over the street and the ocean. We enjoyed many evenings outside on the deck, taking advantage of the communal bbq facilities and meeting other guests.

WHAT WAS SO SPECIAL ABOUT WATERS EDGE ON THE STRAND?

I loved the location best, it was so central and right on the water. The complex was also really quiet, there was a strict ‘no-party’ policy which meant we could enjoy an evening out and return to a relaxing environment and get a good night’s sleep.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND STAYING AT WATERS EDGE TO A FRIEND?

Oh yes, in fact we will be back ourselves next year! The Manager, Sue, is really friendly and helpful. She will assist with booking tours and has a lot of local knowledge. Townsville is an awesome holiday destination well worth a visit!

Our Endangered Bilby An Australian native, our beloved bilby is like the ‘Mr Potato Head’ of the animal kingdom. It has a long, pointy nose similar to a hedgehog, it is a marsupial, so like the kangaroo, it carries its young in its pouch, it is a burrowing animal similar to the wombat and has long, silky ears like a bunny rabbit. Making it even more bizarre-looking, it has a long, semi-bushy cat-like tail, which is black with a distinctive white tip. The bilby is the largest member of the bandicoot family. DID YOU KNOW? BILBIES HAVE STRONG FORELIMBS AND POWERFUL CLAWS, WHICH ARE USED FOR DIGGING FOR FOOD AND BURROWS. ITS POUCH IS BACKWARD-FACING SO IT DOES NOT FILL UP WITH SOIL WHILE IT IS DIGGING. Bilbies are almost impossible to find in the wild. This is largely due to the fact that numbers have been rapidly declining, but also because they are nocturnal, not coming out of their burrow until at least one hour after dark. DID YOU KNOW? BILBIES MATURE VERY QUICKLY. BY ONLY SIX MONTHS OF AGE, A FEMALE BILBY IS READY TO PRODUCE A FAMILY OF HER OWN. There were two species of bilby, the greater and the lesser bilby; however the lesser bilby is thought to have become extinct in the 1950s. Their environmental classification in Australia is vulnerable while also elevated to endangered in Queensland. DID YOU KNOW? THERE MAY BE ONLY 400 – 1600 BILBIES LEFT IN QUEENSLAND. As part of Billabong Sanctuary’s conservation programme of raising the awareness of threatened native animals, a semi-arid desert habitat is being launched with the star of the exhibit being the greater bilby. Initially, two 5-year-old female bilbies from Cleland Wildlife Park, in South Australia, will be displayed. The Zoo and Aquarium Association through their managed species programme, have breeding programmes for both release into the wild and building the number of breeding bilbies in zoos in Australia. It is envisaged that Billabong Sanctuary will be part of this programme. Other fauna that will be displayed in the semi-arid desert habitat are green budgerigars, inland taipan, shingleback lizard and the centralian carpet python. The interpretative signage which plays a vital role in the semi-arid desert exhibit outlines the reasons for the decline of the bilby, mainly due to feral cats, as well as the measures which can be taken to ensure their survival. More than just a great place to see your favourite Australian native animals up close, Billabong Sanctuary is an integral part of the conservation of vulnerable and endangered species. The Sanctuary has advanced accreditation with the Australian Ecotourism Association due to its efforts in education and conservation. It supports the koala hospital on Magnetic Island, with part of the proceeds of souvenir koala photos going toward the rehabilitation of koalas. Billabong Sanctuary is also involved in a captive breeding programme with the endangered species, the southern cassowary. Any chicks the sanctuary’s male cassowary, Yarrabah, and female, Hope, produce will go to other zoos and wildlife parks to build up the numbers of breeding pairs in captivity. Cuddle a koala, pet a kangaroo and hold a wombat. Get up close and personal with your favourite native Australian animal at Billabong Sanctuary.

DID YOU KNOW –By only six months of age, a female bilby is ready to produce a family of her own...?

Billabong Sanctuary Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats, eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please and, as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m. Billabong Sanctuary is Australia’s best interactive wildlife experience! At wildlife encounters you can pat a dingo, hand-feed a cassowary, hold a koala or hug a wombat. Get a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile. At the all-inclusive wildlife talks you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform you on many misconceptions people may have about different animals. One of the most misunderstood native animals in Australia is the dingo. See a different side to this magnificent creature and then pose for a photo and pat the friendly dingoes. Billabong Sanctuary has 2 star attractions when it comes to crocodiles. Bully who is the larger of the two weighing in at 750 kgs and measuring 5m in length. Bully arrived at Billabong Sanctuary in 2013. He was trapped at Halifax, north of Innisfail and due to his weight, his crate had to be transferred into his enclosure by crane. Then there is Jupiter, who is a whopping 500 kgs and 4.3m in length. Jupiter was caught off Townsville’s Strand Beach in early February 2016. Estimated at 60 years of age, Jupiter has battle scars down the side of his body from confrontations with other large crocodiles. Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

Magnetic Island is 8 km off-shore from Townsville, a quick 20 minute journey by ferry. The island is 52km2, of which 70% is national park. It is a stunning natural paradise with a relaxing tropical lifestyle. Just over 2000 people live on the island all year round and there is a friendly holiday atmosphere and chilled out local vibe.

Photo courtesy of Tourism & Events Queensland

HISTORY Magnetic Island is called Yunbenun by the Wulgurukaba people who are the Traditional Aboriginal Owners of the island and lived there for thousands of years. In 1770 Captain James Cook sailed passed on his ship, the Endeavour’ and while he was there his compass was affected by ‘a strange magnetic force’ on the island which is why it is now called ‘Magnetic Island’.

GEOGRAPHY Magnetic Island was part of the Australian mainland until 7500 years ago when sea levels rose cutting it off. Magnetic Island is composed mostly of granite, the result of a volcanic force that pushed molten rock up to the earth’s surface 275 million years ago. Much of the volcanic rock has eroded away but the underlying granite has decomposed into fault lines and created the distinctive granite boulders and rocky headlands we see today. The island is famed for its untouched natural beauty, there are 23 bays and beaches, some of which are only accessible by foot or boat. Mount Cook is the highest point on the island and it is fringed by magnificently tangled rainforest jungle, vine forests, eucalypt woods and emerald green hoop pine trees.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest at Sandi’s, Magnetic Island is back by popular demand and promises to be bigger and better than ever! After the success of previous years, Sandi’s is holding its 4th annual Oktoberfest celebration Saturday, October 22, to Monday, October 24.

Sandi’s will once again be transformed into a traditional beer hall and this year’s festivities will showcase their new outdoor area with more seating than ever before. Sandi’s native Bavarian owner and head chef comes direct from Munich (home of the Oktoberfest), making Sandi’s the most authentic Oktoberfest celebration in North QLD. The delicious menu features a range of traditional German and Bavarian dishes such as Bratwurst, pan-fried schnitzels, giant pretzels, sauerkraut, spaetzle and the feature dish, their mouth-watering “spit-roast pig”. To complement the finger-licking food options, there will be German beers imported directly from Munich, on tap and served in frozen steins. Beer lovers can enjoy specialty Oktoberfest lagers such as Spaten, Lowenbrau and Becks as well as full flavoured Weissbiers such as Paulaner and Franziskaner.

To add to the atmosphere and flare of the weekend customers will be served by beer wenches in traditional dirndls and lederhosen. Live entertainment includes a 7-piece Oompah Band playing all the traditional Oktoberfest classics live from 11am Saturday and Sunday. The full menu and bar service starts at 10am each day. Sandi’s have also extended the weekend to include Monday, dubbing it “Hosptoberfest”, an opportunity for hard-working hospitality staff on Magnetic Island and the Townsville region to join the festivities after a big weekend working. Oktoberfest is a family-friendly event for all ages. Guests can dress up in traditional Bavarian attire to win prizes for best-dressed plus there will be daily stein holding and giant pretzel eating competitions. With a large number of German travellers visiting Magnetic Island every day, it’s a great chance to reconnect with their homeland. For other nationalities it is an opportunity to experience a little bit of German culture and tradition right here in North QLD. For a weekend of fun and culture, make sure you head down to Sandi’s this Oktoberfest!

Ranger Tony Meet

from Bungalow Bay Koala Village

HELLO, MY NAME IS ANTHONY GORDON, BUT PEOPLE CALL ME RANGER TONY OR THE HOBBIT. I AM THE CURATOR AND MANAGER OF BUNGALOW BAY KOALA VILLAGE PARK. I HAVE BEEN HERE FOR 10 AMAZING YEARS. WHEN PEOPLE SAY THEY HAVE THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD, I KNOW THEY MUST BE LYING, AS I ALREADY HAVE IT! I AM THE LUCKY GUY WHO GETS PAID FOR DOING WHAT HE LOVES AND SHOWING MY PASSION FOR AUSTRALIAN ANIMALS TO VISITORS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. What sort of experience will we have at Bungalow Bay?

What has been your favourite animal encounter?

At Bungalow Bay we have a small wildlife park that is truly hands-on and very personal. We strive to give people the best experience, make sure we include facts and figures as well as having lots of laughs. Across the world, wildlife is in crisis, we are lucky to have such amazing animals in Australia and we want to look after them for future generations. That is our job here at the park, explaining everything simply and easily, so people realise how important, and friendly, Australian animals really are.

Well, in the years I have worked at Bungalow Bay, I have been lucky enough to have many encounters that have made my day. Probably the best ones are when you see a joey koala come out of the pouch the first time ever. To see its reaction to the big world is quite unbelievable, such a fragile little body with massive claws and head. It’s actually really ugly, but so cute at the same time. The mum doesn’t even assist the baby, it has to climb on her by itself!

What sort of animals will we see at Bungalow Bay?

What has been your scariest animal encounter?

During the tour visitors will have the opportunity to meet our feathered, furred and scaly residents. You can meet Jasper, the saltwater crocodile, Kelly, the freshwater turtle and Shadow, our kissable black cockatoo. There is Fred, the frill-necked lizard, who loves to sit on your head and Harry our hairy wombat. You can also wrap a snake around your neck, get a close look at Red, our blue-tongue lizard, and of course cuddle our sweet koalas who are called Pebbles, Thor and Belle.

I have had no scary moments at Bungalow Bay but I have had a few in my life. I once got a death adder bite which was probably the scariest. I couldn’t see, couldn’t breathe and couldn’t swallow.

What is your favourite animal at the park? Well of all the animals that we have in the park it has to be Pebbles, our beautiful koala. She is a dream to work with and holds a very special place in my heart because she is the last offspring of our famous koala, Barney, who passed away 3 years ago from old age. He was a legend. He was known as the “Boob Koala” as he loved to hold onto ladies or mens Boobs. It was the only way we could get him to sit for photos!

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Just today I had a French lady visit the park. She was a lovely person that was scared of everything! When the tour was finished she had held all the creatures big and small and she thanked me afterwards and I told her that she had made my day. You don’t have to save lives to be brave, just try and get over your own fears. My statement is. If you wake up breathing then it’s going to be a great day. The world is a beautiful place lets ALL enjoy it, including the wildlife.

Bountiful

Burdekin One hour south of Townsville and two hours north of the Whitsundays is the quiet, scenic region known as the Burdekin, home to two main centres, Ayr and Home Hill. With its vibrant community life, lush farmland, magnificent wetlands and extensive natural pursuits like fishing, birdwatching and scuba diving, this lesser-known region is well-worth a visit.

REEL IN THE FISH OF YOUR LIFE By far the district’s greatest claim to fame is its fishing. The Burdekin is wellknown for its barramundi, mudcrabs, other estuary species and off-coast reef fishing. You can launch your boat at one of the boat ramps to chase the elusive barra or try a bit of beach fishing. Council maintains eight boat ramps located within the shire on behalf of Queensland Transport. These boat ramps are located at Cromarty Creek, Barramundi (Morris’s) Creek, Barratta Creek, Ocean Creek, Plantation Creek, Hell Hole, Groper Creek and Wallace Creek.

INDULGE IN SOME BURDEKIN HOSPITALITY The Burdekin has an excellent variety of charming cafes. On the mainstreet there is a quirky little café called The Chill Parlour that has a delicious breakfast menu, freshly squeezed juices and the perfect blend of coffee for your

caffeine fix. Just down the road at Home Hill is the Vintage Tea Shop and Craft Café, a popular stop-off for road trippers with great parking. Inside you can browse the knick-knacks, order a light lunch from the café and enjoy the personal service.

EXPERIENCE ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST ADVENTURE DIVES In 1911, the luxury passenger vessel SS Yongala disappeared in a cyclone just off the coast. The vessel now sits on a sandy bed 33 metres below the surface. The top parts of the ship can be seen at 15 metres. Yongala Dive is a company that offer day trips for the adventurous, heading deep into the unknown and exploring the wreck, seeing the tragic destiny of the vessel first hand. The wreck is also is known for close encounters with bull sharks, manta rays and turtles.

Owners, Carla and Laurence Dal Santo both come from large Italian families where food, and most importantly, making it with love, is one of the biggest joys in life. The Dal Santo family have owned and operated the deli for 18 years now. They started out selling

small goods, cheeses, olives, meats and continental lines. These days they have opened a café section and expanded their range so that customers can browse the shelves and discover an Aladdin’s cave of delicious produce. From marinated vegetables to a range of homemade chutneys, olive oils to specialty pasta, jams, olives, syrups, sauces, vinegars, pickles, relish and much more. THINGS TO DO IN THE WHITSUNDAYS VISIT THE SPARKLING SILICA SANDS OF WHITEHAVEN BEACH

ESCAPE TO HYDEAWAY BAY

Voted the third best beach in the world because of its amazing bright white sands, Whitehaven Beach is located on Whitsunday Island which is the largest of the 74 islands in the Whitsunday group.

Hydeaway Bay and its sister town Dingo Beach are situated at the northern end of the Whitsundays, accessible by road from Airlie Beach. Quiet and secluded, these little hamlets are perfect for those seeking some rest and relaxation on long, sandy beaches with hardly another soul in sight. Endless horizons and picturesque views dotted with islands can be seen from numerous vantage points, and the hungry, thirsty or weary can stop for a bite to eat, a refreshing beverage or a night’s sleep at one of the two establishments at Cape Gloucester or private holiday houses by prior arrangement.

Whitehaven Beach stretches over seven kilometres and boasts brilliant white silica sand that is among the purest in the world. Sink your feet into the sand and wade into the warm waves that gently lap the shore and you’ll soon realise why people come here from all over the world. At the northern end of Whitehaven Beach is Hill Inlet. A stunning inlet where the tide shifts the sand and water to create a beautiful fusion of colours and white sand formations known as the ‘swirling sands’. Whitehaven Beach can be experienced in several ways. If you’re interested in a day trip there are ferries, yachts, power boats and luxury cruising yachts that depart from Airlie Beach. A variety of sailing companies also offer multi-day charters.

ENJOY WATERSPORTS AT THE PROSERPINE LAKE Just 30 minutes from Proserpine is Peter Faust Dam, also known as Lake Proserpine. It is an ideal spot for watersports and freshwater fishing. Peter Faust Dam is renowned as home to more 1m plus barramundi than any other impoundment in Australia. A combination of tropical climate with long summers and mild winters, the dam has no closed barra season so can be fished all year round and is annually restocked with over 20,000 barramundi fingerlings. The submerged branches and structure surrounding the lake make it the ideal spot for other species like sooty grunter, sleepy cod and saratoga. Local fishing tackle stores and guided trips are available all year round. Lake Proserpine plays host to fishing competitions, with campground accommodation at Camp Kanga close by making it an ideal sports fishing destination. Bring your crab pots too because redclaw and freshwater crayfish also inhabit the lake. There is a concrete boat ramp to take craft up to 8m situated next to the BBQ areas.

EXPLORE CONWAY NATIONAL PARK Conway National Park is a dramatic landscape of rainforest-clad hills, secluded beaches and panoramic outlooks over the scenic Whitsundays area, only 15 minutes from Airlie Beach. The park includes Conway Peninsula and protects the largest area of lowland tropical rainforest in Queensland outside Tropical North Queensland. Hoop pines grow on coastal ridges and in damp gullies, emerging above the rainforest canopy. Rugged, steep and rocky cliffs provide a spectacular 35 kilometre-long backdrop to the Whitsunday Passage and islands. Walk or boat into secluded Swamp Bay bush camping area beside a secluded pebbly beach overlooking Daydream Island. Enjoy a wide range of bushwalking opportunities that start from the Conway National Park day-use area and Mount Rooper and Coral Beach car parks. The Conway Circuit for walkers and mountain bike riders also winds through the park. From Mount Rooper lookout, take in superb views over the islands: Hamilton, Dent, Long and Henning. The view from the ridge above secluded Coral Beach is well worth the effort. Enjoy birdwatching along the tracks then relax over a picnic in the day-use area near Shute Harbour. Bowen is the top of the Whitsundays, a jewel in the Whitsunday crown with untouched beaches, beautiful bays and a perfect tropical climate. Bowen is one of the undiscovered treats of Queensland and an ideal destination for those seeking a laid back beach holiday. Bowen is situated in the northern region of the Whitsundays on the shores of Edgecumbe Bay, just 40 minutes drive north from Airlie Beach. It’s a picturesque seaside town that offers a beachcomber’s paradise with eight award-winning, palm-fringed beaches to explore. Plus there’s the reef, beach and estuary fishing. The most popular beaches are Horseshoe Bay and Queens Beach. Visitors are well provided for at most beaches in the Bowen area, with facilities including barbecues, picnic tables, children’s playgrounds and neatly maintained parkland areas. The Bowen foreshore has recently been redeveloped with fun family activities in mind and boasts a sound shell for outdoor events.

TRIPPING PICKS

BOWEN CINEMA

This quaint, rural cinema was constructed in 1948 at Queens Beach, close to Bowen. Back in the 1940’s it was called the Summergarden Theatre and for the first few years of operation it didn’t have a licence or even a roof! They used timber poles and tarpaulins to shelter the audience from the rain. In the 1950’s, a permanent roof was constructed and the cinema quickly became a cultural staple of Bowen community life. It is still a much-loved iconic landmark to this day. There are two screens, the larger seats 275 people and is equipped with the latest in technology. The second cinema was built in 1995 and seats 86 people in a modern and comfortable setting. A trip to Bowen Cinema is more than just watching a movie, it is a trip into the past and the gooey nostalgia of yesteryear. The cinema shows a variety of blockbusters, family films and Hollywood classics. Check out bowencinemas. com for full details.

FLAGSTAFF HILL LOOK-OUT Spectacular panoramic views will astound and delight travellers who visit Bowen’s premier lookout, Flagstaff Hill. With sweeping views from Rose Bay, along the expanse of Kings Beach, across to the lighthouse on North Head Island, Stony Island, Gloucester Island back to the Marina, and across town, you will feel like you’re on top of the world. Binoculars and a look-out tower ensure the best view in the Whitsundays. A coffee shop gives you the opportunity to sit back and take in the splendour of the area over a delicious bite to eat.

EAT FRESH LOCAL SEAFOOD STRAIGHT OFF THE TRAWLER For the freshest seafood in this part of Queensland, make sure you call into Arabon Seafoods. They supply seafood that is fresh, in season and caught locally just off the coast of Bowen. Arabon Seafoods is extremely high quality and they have been supplying the local area for more than 15 years. Call in for fresh coral trout, Spanish mackeral, Atlantic salmon, barramundi, scallops, calamari, tiger prawns, bugs, mussels and oysters. They are open seven days a week and offer special travelers packs for visitors. Arabon Seafoods also sells ice and boat equipment as well fishing gear such as ropes, bait, chandlery and fuel.

Proserpine

the sweet heart of

At first, it may appear as ‘just another dot’ on the map. A small town on the Bruce Highway and gateway-by-road to Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. But those who take the time to stop and explore Proserpine will discover seemingly endless possibilities for discovery, adventure and fun.

As far back as modern history can trace, the earliest inhabitants of the Proserpine area are aboriginals who have walked the land for more than 9000 years. The people are known as Ngaro and inhabit the wider Whitsundays, including Bowen and the Whitsunday Islands. The descendants from early Ngaro still live within this region and share tales and dreaming stories from pre-European times.

Early European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s to develop pasture and cattle runs. It is a common mis-conception that Proserpine was given its name by early explorer, George Dalrymple, however it has since been established that Dalrymple hadn’t traversed the area. Other research suggests the name may have originated with the Proserpine Creek pastoral run circa 1861. Did you know? The name Proserpine is derived from the Greek goddess, Persephone, known in Roman mythology as Proserpina. Persephone was referred to as a goddess of vegetation, associated with fertility and lush growth. The verdant plains surrounding Proserpine pay homage to its name with pasture, sugar and cattle contributing greatly to the towns’ development and wealth.

THE ‘SWEET HEART’ OF THE WHITSUNDAYS Airlie is affectionately known as the ‘heart of the reef’ while its inland town of Proserpine is the sweet heart. Sugar has been an important influence in the prosperity of Proserpine since 1882 when the Glen Isla cattle run set aside 3000 acres for a sugar plantation. This land was later subdivided in the 1890s, part of it is where Proserpine stands today. By 1900 there was more than 200 settlers in the area with 70 independent farmers growing sugar cane for the local mill. The sugar mill shipped its sweet products via a tramway to a wharf on the Proserpine River. A school, community hall and Presbyterian church were built, the foundations for the town which still flourishes today.

the Whitsundays To unlock the secrets of Proserpine’s past, a visit to the Proserpine Historical Museum is well worth a look. Located on the Bruce Highway on Proserpine’s Main Street, it houses interesting information and artifacts covering ancient aboriginal ancestors to cattle farmers and sugar cane pioneers.

NATURAL BY NATURE

A serene waterfall is the backdrop to a local favourite swimming hole, Cedar Creek Falls, a refuge from the hot tropical summer. The falls are approximately a 15 minute drive from Proserpine and is most visually spectacular during the wet season. Take insect repellant to protect from mosquitoes and, as the bottom is rocky in places, you may be more comfortable entering the swimming hole wearing reef shoes.

Proserpine holds the key to some of the most accessible natural treasures on the Queensland coast. One of the ‘secret gems’ is Lake Proserpine, otherwise known as Peter Faust Dam. It is the benchmark other dams strive to become when folks talk about fishing for barramundi. It is hailed as one of the best fishing locations in Queensland, with plentiful barramundi as well as sooty grunter and saratoga. One of the best ways to experience fishing at its best is by joining the locals on a chartered expedition. Barramundi Charters combine expert local knowledge with top gear to ensure a fun day of fishing on the lake. Lindsay Dobe and his team of experienced guides provide everything you need on their custom vessel, O’Fishal Business, including light refreshments and snacks as well as tutorials on casting and retrieval methods. When you think of crocodiles, you may immediately think of the Northern Territory, but you might be surprised to know there are crocodiles in the wild even further south than Mackay. The Proserpine River is one of the best places in Queensland to see crocodiles in their natural habitat, with a strong population known to inhabit the river. Whitsunday Crocodile Safari operates daily and is the only commercial tourism operator on the Proserpine River. With a maximum of 31 passengers on their vessel, the tour is comfortable, entertaining and educational. While the star attractions are the many crocodiles, visitors will also see a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as experience traditional campfire damper (bread) and billy-tea along with Australian ‘bush tucker.’

Proserpine

the sweet heart of the Whitsundays EAT, DRINK PROSERPINE Take a detour off the Bruce Highway into the town centre of Proserpine to experience friendly local hospitality at its best. There’s a reason why in 2007 it won the Tourism Queensland Friendliest town award. Stroll the streets and take in the well-preserved Art Deco architecture before exploring the many alleyways which house an interesting selection of eateries and artesian delights. Just off the main highway on Main Street you’ll find Blaze Café, with blaze paying homage to the cane fire burning heritage of the town. Blaze is famous for its $10 Friday lunches and its impressive pizza menu with locally inspired themes including the ‘sugar mill’ and ‘smokey and the bandit.’ Further along Main Street, Café 22 is a homely and welcoming space that knows how to extract a great cup of coffee. It also sells the popular tea brand, T2. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for daily specials which frequently include delicious options like tandoori chicken wings or a hearty rump steak burger.

ENTERTAIN ME If you love nothing more than an afternoon of swinging a club, the Proserpine Golf Club provides one of the best courses on the Queensland Coast. It is the only 18-hole golf course on the mainland in the Whitsundays. The serene environment is what makes this course so appealing. Unwind on the turf nestled among cane fields and trees which deliver unique bird life. Have a go at one of the challenging par 3’s among a friendly atmosphere with a picturesque waterway as a beautiful backdrop. Visitors are welcome with clubs and buggies for hire. If chasing a little white ball around isn’t your thing, try the Proserpine Entertainment Centre on Main Street. It is both a movie theatre, delivering a selection of blockbuster movies, as well as a destination for live performances and functions. It is famous for hosting impressive outdoor performances on its lawn, while school holiday entertainment on a rainy day is a breeze with children’s movies frequently on show.

There’s more to Proserpine than meets the eye. Dare to deviate from the highway and discover a town which is eager to welcome you with old-fashioned gusto. Gastronomic delights, wild animal safaris and tranquil nature at its best, anything is possible when you stop to explore Proserpine.

Airlie Beach is the hub of the Whitsunday region, a renowned holiday destination and gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Previously a backpacker town, a recent 22 million dollar face-lift has boosted the little town and put it on the map as a holiday destination for a more boutique type of tourist. There is a lively main street, lined with restaurants and bars, a huge public lagoon overlooking the Coral Sea and first-class marinas attracting a vibrant yachting community. Airlie Beach is also the best place to book your boat tour to the Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven Beach.

THINGS TO DO IN AIRLIE BEACH GO SAILING OF COURSE!

SATURDAY MARKETS

The Whitsundays is a world-renowned sailing destination and Airlie Beach, with its two central marinas, is the perfect launch pad for an idyllic sailing adventure around the 74 stunning islands in the Whitsunday group. Visitors can choose between a host of sailing options, from skippering your own boat with a bareboating experience to a huge variety of guided day tours and overnight charters.

Every Saturday as the sun comes up Airlie Beach foreshore comes alive. Stall holders from around the region gather to put on a lively market show. Mango sorbet fresh from Bowen, farmers selling their delicious homegrown vegetables, stunning Australian opals, nautical giftware, homemade jewelry and fashion, this market has you browsing for hours. Buskers are playing music, there is sandcastle art and you can even get a massage at a bargain $20 for 20 minutes!

Boating is the only way to explore the Whitsunday Islands. Dive off the vessel into the majestic clear waters of the Coral Sea and snorkel some of the best fringing coral reef in the world. Moore up in your own private bay for the night and marvel at the host of stars above, the gentle lap of the ocean the only sound for miles around.

FALL IN LOVE WITH HEART REEF Heart Reef, in the Great Barrier Reef of the Whitsundays, is a stunning composition of coral that has naturally formed into the shape of a heart. Located in Hardy Reef, Heart Reef is best experienced from the air by helicopter or seaplane, as visitors are unable to snorkel or dive there due it’s protected status. Many tour companies will combine a scenic flight over Heart Reef with other breathtaking spots in the Whitsundays, including Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet. A certain highlight of any visit to the Whitsundays. Heart Reef was discovered in 1975 by one of Air Whitsunday’s pilots and is now an internationally-recognised attraction of the Whitsundays and features on many postcards. It has also been the site of many proposals and declarations of love over the years.

Interview

with a

Food junkie

Tripping Magazine chats with Bec Clark aka the Food Junkie and coowner of Fish D’vine about the emerging food tourism scene and tastes in the Whitsundays.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT THE FISH D’VINE EXPERIENCE? The local produce, we’ve got fisherman that work for us on a full time basis which means amazing fresh fish delivered daily our ever changing specials add a lot of variety as we tailor them to suit what the boat brings in and what’s in season. We’re a restaurant that’s owned by chefs and run by chefs, I think has put us on the foodie map.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE DISHES TO EAT ON YOUR MENU V’S PREPARE IN THE KITCHEN? My favourite items eat? Of course there isn’t anything that’s not great! Our food is fresh and local - you just can’t bet that. All tastes and food Allergies are catered for. The tiger prawns from Bowen are stunning and obviously the mud crab is a to dish to die for. Chilli, black pepper or natural. We’ve got some great dishes for non-seafood lovers as well.I don’t spend much hands on time in the kitchen these days and focus more on my cooking Master Classes and blogging! My favourite dishes to prepare when I’m in the kitchen was going back to the good old classics, the dishes that have a few stages to prepare like our seafood chowder, filleting the fish and making making a fish valoute (stock) in the morning, with all the bones, priceless. The glistening fillet of Atlantic salmon as the knife glides through, just delicious. White local fish as sashimi. Seafood is regularly on my menu at home.

WHAT OTHER FOODIE EXPERIENCES DO YOU RECOMMEND IN AIRLIE BEACH? Get to the Airlie Beach markets held on our beautiful foreshore every Saturday morning. Breakfast picnic at the lagoon, for me it can be as simple as free range eggs and locally made bacon from Don the butcher in Cannonvale - served with fresh Bowen tomatoes. Restaurant wise there is now so much more on offer to make Airlie Beach a foodie destination. We are lucky to have such a variety now. Talk to the suppliers too, they are always happy to help, what’s new, what’s in season.

TALK TO US ABOUT LOCAL INGREDIENTS... What I tend to notice is that we’re very lucky to be a multi-cultural town and the local Thai families have introduced some really out there produce that you’ll never get in a supermarket chain. We try to source as much locally as we can and have a great relationship with Jamie and his team at the Prickly Pineapple. The tropical fruits that we have available are just amazing. Bring on mango time.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO EAT AT THE COFFEE CLUB, PORT OF AIRLIE Firstly, it’s location. Port of Airlie has an exclusive, luxury environment with tranquil views across the marina. The surroundings are manicured and there is an al fresco dining area, perfect for a relaxing lunch. Secondly, I just love going to Coffee Clubs! You always know that you are going to get a very high standard of service and a quality experience. The coffee is first-class, the lunch is sensational and the wait staff always make us feel special.

WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO EAT? It was Sunday lunchtime and my mum and I decided to head out for lunch together. My mum chose the beer battered fish, chips and salad, which she said was delicious. Even though it was lunch-time, they served breakfast all day, which was brilliant because I was craving an eggs benny! Their eggs benny menu was huge, I have never seen so many variations. I opted for the salmon and spinach because it is my favourite and I wasn’t disappointed. The hollandaise was creamy, the smoked salmon plentiful and afterwards I sat back in my chair feeling very content. The ambience at Port of Airlie meant we didn’t feel any rush to leave. We enjoyed the complementary chilled water and whiled away the afternoon with happy conversation.

WHAT MAKES THE COFFEE CLUB SO SPECIAL? The Coffee Club is a venue that caters for every type of person and offers something for every occasion. Whether you are on a business meeting, catching up with friends, having a family get together or simply there to read the newspaper you can be sure to feel most welcome. They have a fully licensed bar, comfortable seating, a flexible menu, a selection of tantalizing cakes and a consistency you can bet your breakfast on!

Airlie Apartments WHERE ARE AIRLIE APARTMENTS LOCATED?

WHAT FACILITIES ARE ON OFFER?

They are perfectly positioned, overlooking Abell Point Marina and a short five minute walk into town. This was our first visit to Airlie Beach and we were thrilled to discover everything was in walking distance. The apartments are close to the lively town centre but far enough away to offer us the quiet seclusion we were looking for.

A large shaded swimming-pool is the social heart of the apartment complex. The pool overlooks Abell Point Marina and there are bbq facilities with comfortable seating for large groups. There are only 15 apartments in the complex creating an intimate feel and we often went poolside to socialize and relax. The atmosphere was light and it was easy to chat to other holiday makers.

WHAT SORT OF ACCOMMODATION IS AVAILABLE? There are 15 apartments in total ranging from 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms. For a little extra you can book poolside rooms or even the Superior Ocean View apartment. My boyfriend and I are from Europe, travelling around the east coast for a month. We are on a budget so wanted to find somewhere affordable yet comfortable and that’s why we choose Airlie Apartments. They offered a one-bedroom garden view apartment which suited our budget and well-surpassed our expectations. Our apartment was spacious, with light and airy rooms. There was a comfortable lounge, flat screen T.V. fully-equipped kitchen and inviting bedroom. It had air-conditioning throughout and our own private verandah. The verandah quickly became our favourite place to sit as it had a partial sea view which was another hidden extra we didn’t expect!

62

WHAT MAKES AIRLIE APARTMENTS SO SPECIAL? The warm, welcoming attitude of Cathy, the owner. The apartments are her babies and she looks after them, and you, like part of the family. The personal touch offered by Cathy makes everyone who enters feel instantly at home. She provides honest, independent tour advice, often with great discounts and if you want to stay an extra night she’ll always look after you.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND AIRLIE APARTMENTS TO A FRIEND? Yes, definitely. In terms of value for money, quality and cleanliness of rooms and facilities, plus the friendly service from Cathy, it is a big 10 out of 10!

YOUR LUXURY HOLIDAY HOME IN AIRLIE BEACH

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY AT CRUSOE’S BEACH HOUSE? Once a year we go on a holiday with one other family. We chose Crusoe’s Beach House because it offers a great space for children and could accommodate two families with the luxury and space we were looking for. Crusoe’s is the ultimate beach house. It is a huge split-level private home located in a tropical garden setting with stunning ocean views over Abell Point Marina and out to the Whitsunday Islands. We instantly fell in love with it because of its unique nautical décor, high soaring ceilings, expansive decks and modern facilities. There are two separate living areas, one for each family, multiple relaxing areas and dining areas where the two families could gather together during meal times.

WHAT FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE AT CRUSOE’S BEACH HOUSE? A large splash-pool outside on the deck, a leisurely hammock, poolside daybed, outdoor shower, two sweeping varandahs and undercover parking. Inside there is reverse-cycle air-conditioning, two smart T.V.’s and Blue Ray DVD player plus comfortable seating. The main kitchen has a central island breakfast bar and there is

s ’ e o s u r C

BEACH HOUSE

a separate downstairs kitchenette. Everything has been considered, there are spare towels for swimming and bi-fold doors opening the whole house up to a delicious ocean breeze. Sunlight filters through every room making the house bright and vibrant. The bedrooms, however, have blackout blinds so whenever we wanted to sleep late we could do so in tranquil darkness.

WHAT MADE CRUSOE’S SO SPECIAL? Everything really! Although, one thing that will stick in my mind is the welcome we received by local real estate agent, Andrea from Harcourts. It was so nice to be greeted on arrival and shown round the house. She explained how everything worked and her personal service really made us feel at home. Another nice touch is the welcome pack waiting in the fridge, it even included a bottle of sparkling wine!

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND CRUSOE’S BEACH HOUSE TO A FRIEND? Oh yes, I will be telling everybody about this house! It was our own private holiday home and nobody wanted to leave. We’re already planning to come back next year!

Three Island Cruise

WHY DID YOU PICK THIS TOUR? We had heard great things about this tour from fellow travellers. We then did some research on Trip Advisor and were blown away by the number of outstanding reviews.

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THIS TOUR? There was something for everyone. We were travelling with our extended family and wanted a tour which could get us all involved. From the youngest member to the eldest, we all enjoyed the day.

DESCRIBE THE TOUR? We were collected from our hotel and travelled in a courtesy coach to Shute Harbour for check-in. The boat was wonderfully spacious with comfortable lounge seating. The cruise to Hill Inlet took about an hour and we were transferred to the walking track by small tender. The crew joined us on a moderate walk to the spectacular lookout. My photos are just like the postcards! We then walked down onto the white sands and enjoyed our first swim. On return to the boat a big buffet lunch was prepared and we dined as we cruised onto Bali Hai. Back in the water, this time snorkelling with colourful fish and coral. It was a cooler day so some opted for the Glass Bottom Boat Tour, which was no extra cost. The afternoon was spent strolling at our leisure around Daydream Island Resort and Spa. A complimentary cocktail on the final journey home - just perfect!

WHAT DID IT COST AND WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE? The Tour was $180 per adult, but we took advantage of the great family rate of $500, which included 2 adults and 2 children up to 16 years. There was also a discount for seniors. It included everything, we only needed our togs and towels!

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND? We have already. Friends, family and the people in the caravan next to us! They have all enjoyed seeing our wonderful photos from the day and we know without a doubt they too would love a day out with Reefstar!
