GREAT BARRIER MARINE PAR

WELCOME TO QLD! THE SUNSHINE STATE

Awash with sparkling beaches, vibrant cities and more than 300 annual sunshine days, Queensland, known as the sunshine state, is truly where Australia shines. With an area of 1,727,000 square kilometres, Queensland is the second largest state in Australia and is five times larger than the United Kingdom! It’s easy to see why the vast inland savannah and endless ribbon of coastline provides visitors with experiences like no other on earth and why it’s not difficult to find your own quiet piece of paradise.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA Queensland is home to more than 4 million people. More than half of Queensland’s population live outside of its state capital, Brisbane, a large proportion in comparison with most of Australia which is highly urbanized. But once you venture out of the city and hit the highway for an epic road trip, lesser-known treasures arise in many of the smaller shires.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA Queensland is home to five of Australia’s 11 World Natural Heritage areas. These include the Scenic Rim National Parks, Fraser Island, Riversleigh Fossil Fields, the Wet Tropics (including Daintree National Park), and one of the great Natural Wonders of the World; the Great Barrier Reef. A fascinating place of exceptional beauty, Fraser Island, at 120km in length, is the world’s largest island! It contains more than 100 freshwater lakes all ringed by sand, and the surrounding rainforest is the only rainforest in the world which grows on highelevation sand dunes.

DID YOU KNOW? Mackay is one of the best places in Queensland to see a platypus in the wild. Take a day trip to Eungella National Park and watch this unique dick-billed mammal splash among the water of Broken River.

Continue the journey northward for a taste of the tropics in Townsville. The cosmopolitan city combines federation architecture with an array of top restaurants and boutique shopping. Soak in the coastal vibe with a stroll along The Strand or get close to nature and cuddle a koala at Billabong Sanctuary. Off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is one of the few islands you can drive to. Take your vehicle on the car ferry and explore many of its 23 beautiful bays.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA Magnetic Island was named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770 when the island appeared to affect the magnetic compass on his ship.

Stretching more than 2,300km, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on the planet, the only one big enough to be seen from outer space. It extends over 14 degrees of latitude, from shallow estuarine areas to deep oceanic waters, giving it a vast and complex natural ecosystem.

For a small island, there is much to do on Magnetic Island. Soar above the island in the Red Baron; the only two-passenger, open cockpit bi-plane, on floats, in the world. Ride bareback into the ocean on a horse trek or discover koalas in the wild with a bush walk to historic WWII forts.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA

Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef and nestled in between these two World Heritage areas is the modern mecca of Cairns, Queensland’s most northern tropical city. Laze on a northern beach or explore the rustic artist village of Kuranda by taking a gondola ride above the rainforest canopy.

The Great Barrier Reef is explored by more than 2,000,000 visitors every year! The southern Great Barrier Reef begins off the coast of Bundaberg, a region famous for sugar cane production, rum, ginger beer and nesting turtles.

DID YOU KNOW?

R REEF RK Located just north of Bundaberg, 1770 is the only town in the world which has a number for a name!

Lieutenant James Cook made the first landfall by a European on what was to become the Discovery Coast and the birthplace of Queensland on May 24, 1770. From the town of 1770 discover Lady Musgrave Island, an island cay with an internal lagoon, unique to the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef parallels the Queensland Coast and is accessible from most destinations. At its heart is the Whitsundays, A string of tropical islands dotted along an idyllic stretch of paradise. The Whitsunday islands are world famous for the luxurious resorts which lay upon them, the azure water which surrounds them as well as the pure white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach and iconic Heart Reef. The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands is Airlie Beach, a backpacking nirvana filled with palm-fringed beaches, waterfront parks and alfresco dining restaurants. It is the epitome of the chilled-out Australian beach lifestyle, a blend of fun in the sun followed by an entertaining night scene. South of the Whitsundays, venture to a place where nature comes naturally. The Mackay region is home to quiet beaches, lesser-known tropical islands and Queensland’s only blue river, the Pioneer. It is one of Australia’s best fishing locations with a selection of tidal creeks, inland dams, mangrove systems and deep-water reefs providing a plethora of fish to hook.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA North Queensland is home to some quirky ‘world’s largest’ items. The world’s largest moth, the Hercules Moth, is found in Northern Queensland with a wingspan of up to 25 centimetres. Lake Echen is home to King fern trees which have the world’s largest fern fronds, up to seven metres long. Inland, Undara National Park has some of the world’s longest and largest lava tube systems. One of the most fascinating areas to explore in Northern Queensland is the Daintree Rainforest. It is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world, thought to be 165 million years old.

DID YOU KNOW? There is an exotic fruit in the Daintree Rainforest known as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It is the only fruit on the planet which tastes like chocolate

pudding, yet it is low in fat and contains more than four times the vitamin

C of an orange; a chocoholics dream come true! You can sample the delicacy at a tropical fruit farm in Cape Tribulation.

With so much to see and do, Queensland is a land of possibility. Gaze upon a star, make a wish and fulfil your dreams during your time in the sunshine state. It’s your time to shine!

Quick Facts The first humans to live in the Daintree was the Aboriginal tribe of the Kuku Yalanji people. These days the closest aboriginal community is located in Wujal Wujal further north up the Bloomfield Track. Lieutenant James Cook first named the area because he was trying to find his way through the labyrinth of the Great Barrier Reef and ran aground. Through his frustration he called it Cape Tribulation. Cape Tribulation became an iconic backpacker destination as early as the 1980’s when it became part of the India-Goa-Bali trail. There were protests on Bloomfield Road in 1982-84 which led to a world heritage listing in 1988

Cape Tribulation Where the Rainforest Meets the Reef

The earliest accommodation was built in 1977 and called Pilgrim Sands, it started as a campground but 16 years ago in 2000 Cape Trib Beach House was built in its place.

Cape Tribulation is the only place in the world where two spectacular World Heritage sites meet, bringing together the wonders of the Daintree Rainforest and the majesty of the Great Barrier Reef.

Top 10 things to do

For travelers, Cape Tribulation gives you the opportunity to explore a truly untouched, natural environment plus discover an adventure playground you could only dream about as a child. From zip-lining through a rainforest canopy to kayaking along the coastline, this is a part of North Queensland that must be witnessed. Getting to Cape Trib is a big part of the adventure. The journey takes you north of Cairns towards Port Douglas and a then further 90 minutes north of there until you reach the Daintree Rainforest which is the oldest rainforest in the world. Crossing into the Daintree is easy with the Daintree River Ferry which is the only cable ferry in Australia.

1. Zip-line through the Daintree Rainforest canopy 2. Spot wildlife on a Daintree River Cruise 3. Go 4 wheel driving along the Bloomfield Track 4. Take a guided horse ride through the rainforest and along the beach 5. Paddle the reef in a sea kayak and see where the land meets the reef while looking out for the local Dugong Daisy. 6. Take an Ocean Safari thrill ride out to the reef and explore two snorkel sites 7. Get your binoculars out for some of the best bird-watching in the country 8. Take a guided night walk through the rainforest, experience the sights and sounds of the rainforest at night and spot any nocturnal wildlife up and about. – Often spotted are snakes, spiders, bugs, insects, birds, and if lucky a Bennett’s Tree Kangaroo. 9. Wake up early and head down to the beach to see the most spectacular sunrise 10. Head down to the beach at night to star gaze. The Milky Way is fully visible from the beaches and if you look hard enough you might even see a few shooting stars. – They’re spotted most nights when the sky is clear.

14

From here the winding roads lead through stunning rugged terrain; forest-glad valleys and mountain vales with views across sparkling streams and rolling farmland. vVisitors can explore pristine beaches, swimming holes and ancient rainforest tracks. Access further north of the Daintree River crossing was only made possible by a dirt road 4wd track which was in place until the early 90’s. The road was fully sealed to Cape Tribulation in 2002, with the last 3.5kms to Cape Trib Beach House sealed in 2015. These days, driving through the Daintree Rainforest you can see how important the sealed road is. It opens up a whole world, allowing everyday people to experience the magic of this remote and ancient place. The final leg of the journey offers stunning aerial views out to the Great Barrier Reef and Cape Tribulation itself. 35km north of the Daintree River Ferry and at the end of the sealed road is Cape Tribulation. When you are looking to wind down after a long day exploring nature’s wonderland the best place to stay is at Cape Tribulation Village. There is a good range of accommodation styles to choose from; eco-retreats, mid-range and budget resorts, bed and breakfasts, farm stays and camping grounds. Cape Tribulation is a base from which you can explore the Daintree, swap stories with other travelers and listen to tips from the locals. The Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation is a must-see part of Tropical North Australia, for adventure, for nature and for an experience you will remember forever.

Ocean Safari Cape Tribulation WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR? It was unlike any snorkelling tour I had ever experienced. The reefs chosen by Ocean Safari are in pristine condition, with an array of colourful coral which were abundant in marine life. Not only did I swim with a kaleidoscope of tropical fish, but I saw giant clams, large crayfish, eagle rays and small reef sharks. The highlight was swimming with a large sea turtle, a magical experience.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED? The Ocean Safari check in office is also home to the Turtle Rock Café and Jungle Lodge, in the tropical Cape Tribulation rainforest, on Cape Tribulation Road. Getting to Cape Tribulation is part of the tropical north adventure. From Port Douglas, it is a 45 minute drive to the Daintree River, where you drive your car onto a cable ferry to cross the river. The road then meanders for another hour through lush Daintree Rainforest to spectacular lookout points and glorious tropical beaches before arriving at Cape Tribulation.

WHY CHOOSE THIS TOUR? Cape Tribulation is where two world heritage areas meet, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The opportunity to experience both simultaneously is a once in a lifetime experience for many visitors. The Ocean Safari vessel only takes a maximum of 25 passengers on each tour. The smaller groups allow you to enjoy the tropical paradise away from larger crowds for a more exclusive and informative experience. Because of the close proximity of Cape Tribulation to parts of the Great Barrier Reef it only takes 25 minutes of travel

TOUR INFO Departing twice daily from Cape Tribulation Morning 9am – 12:30pm Afternoon 1:00pm – 4:30pm (peak season only)

26

to reach the first snorkelling site! This means more time in the water experiencing the beauty of nature and less time on the boat. It also means you can fully experience the wonders of the reef in half a day. The guides are friendly and informative, making the entire trip an unforgettable adventure.

WHAT DOES THE TOUR INCLUDE? The tour includes a complimentary pick up and drop off service from Cape Tribulation accommodation to the Ocean Safari vessel. You are then transported to two different reef sites, where you can choose to join the informative guides on a snorkelling tour, or you can choose to explore on your own. You get at least two hours of time in the water to explore the reefs. All snorkelling equipment is provided, and prescription masks are available to hire. You also receive personalised snorkel instruction as well as reef interpretation and eco appreciation presentations to learn about the surroundings. Drinks, snacks and underwater cameras are available for purchase on the boat.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND? I already have! A friend of mine is travelling to Cairns soon and I convinced her to extend her stay to explore Cape Tribulation and do this tour. It’s a beautiful part of Australia, an experience not to be missed and with Ocean Safari recently winning the Queensland Tourism Award for the best Tour and Transport Operator in the state, you can’t beat that! Stay onsite at Jungle Lodge – cabins and camping available

Paronella Park The Dream Continues . . .

ABOUT Everyone has a dream, but not everyone’s dreams are fulfilled. José Paronella’s dream was to build a castle. He chose a special part of Australia and created Paronella Park. On 5 hectares, beside Mena Creek Falls he built his castle, picnic area by the falls, tennis courts, bridges, a tunnel, and wrapped it up in an amazing range of 7,500 tropical plants and trees (now a lush rainforest!). It opened to the public in 1935. Paronella Park has received multiple Queensland tourism awards, is State and National Heritage listed and is a National Trust listed property. It is privately owned and operated and Eco accredited. Paronella Park is the site of Queensland’s first privately owned hydro electric plant.

When was the last time you visited Paronella Park? As locals, it’s easy to forget that we have Queensland’s number one tourist destination (RACQ: 150 Must Do’s) just down the road from us. A pleasant drive north of Townsville on the Bruce Highway lands you in a fairytale, with castles, bridges, tunnels, and waterfalls, all wrapped up in a story of human triumph. They love their locals at Paronella Park, with a 24 month pass-out card being issued to every guest (included in your entry price). This means you can visit Paronella Park as many times as you like for two whole years! Imagine the situations this can take care of – bored children on school holidays, a family birthday lunch, a romantic date… and how wonderful to be able to accompany visiting relatives to one of our local tourist destinations, rather than just pointing them in the direction and sitting at home, as you don’t want to pay again. And the best thing about the last scenario? As a thank you for bringing along paying guests, Paronella Park extends your pass-out card for another 2 years! Talk about looking after the locals! So let’s talk about what is included in your visit to Paronella Park. There is the ‘Dream Continues’ tour, running every half an hour from 9:30am to 4:30pm, which tells the fascinating story of Jose Paronella and his dream. This tour takes in all the highlights of the Park, and really sets the scene for your visit. Then, every evening, there is the ‘Darkness Falls’ tour. Featuring flood lighting of many of the Park’s highlights, courtesy of the newly restored hydro-electric generator, this tour delights guests nightly. At this time of year, fireflies are out in force, adding even more magic to the moment. Also included is a site for the night in their boutique caravan/camping park, complete with gas BBQ, hot showers and a coin laundry. Don’t like camping? For an additional cost, the dream can still continue at Paronella Park with the addition of their cabins. Affordable, and adorable, they are a true complement to the Paronella Park experience. The list goes on, with a souvenir map guide and fish food (to feed the resident fish and turtles) also included, not to mention some of the best customer service in Far North Queensland. Paronella Park has a café, serving fresh food, and the Mena Creek Hotel, serving delicious Aussie pub grub, is only 200 metres down the road. Mark and Judy Evans, owners of Paronella Park, have worked hard for more than 20 years to provide the best possible visitor experience to all guests of Paronella Park. Why not come down and discover (or re-discover!) one of Far North Queensland’s true hidden treasures.

TOWNSVILLE

This year Townsville is celebrating 150 years of rich and vibrant history. The year-long salute sees many community-led celebrations, festivals, events and exhibitions. The whole town will be celebrating and everyone, including visitors to the region, is invited! SNAPSHOT OF THE 19TH CENTURY THE SETTLEMENT ERA When European settlers first arrived it was 1864 and they were looking for a suitable place to build a port. Eventually they discovered Ross Creek and camped for a few days on what is now known as the popular tourist hub, The Strand. After a few days they left, reporting back with satisfaction that they had found land suitable for settlement. The new settlers thought they were the first to discover the area as there were no boundaries or evidence of civilisation. In fact, it had been home to two Aboriginal tribes for more than 10,000 years. The traditional owners and custodians, the Bindal and Wulgurukaba people, are the first and only people to have lived in the Townsville region until European settlement in the 1860s. Bringing a civilised European way of life to the rough and unforgiving terrain of North Queensland was a massive undertaking. It took many years and involved the passion of many people. By 1865 the first road had been constructed giving access to the vast pastoral farmlands to the west. This connected a network of industry and created a strong platform for growth. In 1866 the town needed substantial investment to progress further so

entrepreneur and businessman, Robert Towns, put up the finance needed. The town was then named Townsville in his honour. In 1867 the population was 300 and by the early 1880s it had swelled to over 3000. Pastoral lands expanded west and the sugar industry reached up and down the coast. The first school was built in North Ward in 1869 followed by the first prison in 1876. In the 1880s the momentum continued; the first stage of Townsville hospital was completed accommodating up to 70 patients, a swing bridge linking Flinders Street with Ross Island was erected and the first Railway line was constructed. This was also the decade when Harry Butler and his family became the first permanent European settlers on Magnetic Island.

By the 1890s the population of Townsville had jumped to 13,000 and the Council Swimming Baths were built on the Strand with gender restrictions that permitted women only to swim on Tuesdays and Fridays.

SNAPSHOT OF THE 20TH CENTURY BRINGING IN THE MODERN AGE In 1902 Townsville was proclaimed a City under the new ‘Local Authorities Act’. The Australian flag was unveiled for the first time in City Hall and the railway to Ayr was opened. This decade saw the first moving picture theatre arrive and gas lamps installed along Flinders Street to make it safe for people to walk at night. By 1936 Townsville’s population reached 30,000 people. Townsville’s first airport opened in 1939 with gravel runways and the

Garbutt airfield was commissioned to become a Royal Australian Air Force base.

Between 1942 and 1945 Townsville played an important part in the War in the Pacific. In the years that followed Townsville became a major military base, accommodating up to 90,000 Australian, American and other allied service personnel. The City was bombed on three occasions by the Japanese, and was used as a major offensive launching base during the battle of the Coral Sea. When peace was announced on the 15th August 1945 crowds flocked to Flinders Street to celebrate. After the war, development could begin again. The University College of Townsville was opened in February 1961 with 105 students and it became known as James Cook University in April 1970. Then in 1967 the Lavarack Barracks was established and the Australian 3rd Task Force were transferred to Townsville. The Townsville Civic Theatre opened in 1977 and was considered the most technically advanced theatre in Queensland. In 150 years Townsville has transformed into the industrial and cultural hub of North Queensland, so much so, that it is recognised as the unofficial capital of North Queensland. Townsville has been responsible for connecting more regional areas, embracing culture and modern technology plus playing an important part of the Second World War. The legacy lives on through the army barracks, the thriving local community, the rich history written in every building you pass and the vibrant celebrations taking place in cultural events all over the city. This is the year to visit Townsville, so make sure it’s on your list!

HISTORY OF TOWNSVILLE SEALINK FERRIES The first public ferries from Townsville to Magnetic Island commenced in the 1890s to bring passengers to Butler’s ‘Health Resort’ in Picnic Bay. The Butler family operated three vessels until 1925, including the Hephzibah, the Tivoli which was the first motorised vessel in Townsville waters, and later, the Nellbay, which, in 1925, was lost in a fire in Cleveland Bay.

Entertaining Emu Lolloping across the barren plains of the Queensland hinterland, the Emu, with its large feathery body perched upon long reptilian legs, is certainly a unique sight to see. Despite it being able to pick up remarkable speed for takeoff, the Emu can’t launch into flight and belongs to a family of flightless birds known as ratites. Other members of the ratite family are spread across the globe and include the ostrich in Africa, the rhea in South America and the kiwi in New Zealand. DID YOU KNOW? The emu is the second largest bird in the world with the largest being its cousin, the ostrich. Emus can grow two metres tall and weigh up to 55kg. Emus occur naturally in all Australias states except Tasmania. They live in a wide variety of habitats from the open plains of the interior to tropical rainforest, but prefer sclerophyll forest and savannah woodland. Emus are regularly seen inland of Townsville where the landscape is rugged and less humid, they often travel in small family groups of young chicks with their father. Emus are not considered to be at risk at all; in fact the population has possibly increased since European settlement because of the abundance of man-made watering holes for sheep and cattle. Originally there were three species of emu, but now there is only one. The two other species became extinct because they were hunted for their meat and feathers. It is believed that the emu is a survivor of prehistoric times and dates back approximately 80 million years in Australia. Emus usually pair up during summer and autumn, ahead of the breeding season. DID YOU KNOW? During breeding season, the female develops blue skin on her neck and her feathers turn a darker brown. The male builds the nest, which is simply a rudimentary scrape in the ground, with trampled grass or leaves. In May or June, the female lays anywhere from 5 - 25 dark green eggs, with an average clutch of around 10 eggs. Each egg is the equivalent of about a dozen chicken eggs. After she has finished laying, the female wanders off and has nothing more to do with her offspring. The male now takes over the care of the eggs. He incubates them for about 60 days, during which time he rarely leaves the nest. The father will care for the emu chicks for up to 18 months where they will learn survival strategy from him. Emus require large amounts of nutrition to fuel their giant bodies, so they seek out the most nourishing parts of the plant, such as the young shoots. DID YOU KNOW? Emus can run very fast! They have long legs and powerful feet with only three toes all facing forward. This allows them to reach speeds of up to 48km/hr. Emus love to run! The emu joins the kangaroo on Australia’s Coat of Arms. Visitors to Billabong Sanctuary can enjoy close encounters with these gentle giants. As you approach their enclosures you may hear the emus greet you with a deep murmuring ‘booming’ sound. Cuddle a koala, pet a kangaroo and hold a wombat. Get up close and personal with your favourite native Australian animal, at Billabong Sanctuary.

DID YOU KNOW –The EMU is the second largest bird in the world!

Billabong Sanctuary Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please and, as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1pm as well as a 3:15pm crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15am and afternoon at 4pm. At wildlife encounters, you can hold a koala or hug a wombat and have a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile. Wildlife talks and interpretative experiences feature all day. Don’t miss the most popular feeding show, where the sanctuary’s largest crocodile, Bully, will leap from the water in an amazing show of strength to take a snap at his lunch. Hear the tremendous jaws snap shut as Bully lunges for food, fed by one of the experienced rangers. Bully is 4.5m long and weighs in excess of 500kgs. To see him in action is an unforgettable nature experience. Take the opportunity to feed one of the snappy freshwater crocodiles, only $10 to experience the action. At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform you on many misconceptions people may have about different animals. One of the most misunderstood native animals in Australia is the dingo. See a different side to this magnificent creature and then pose for a photo and pat the friendly dingoes. The star attraction at the Sanctuary is Tonka, the Common or Bare-faced wombat. Tonka was hand raised by Billabong rangers and loves a cuddle. Tonka sleeps with a teddy bear. You will get to meet Tonka and the Sanctuary’s other wombats at 10:45am and again at 3:45pm. Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

Due to its remote location Florence Bay is largely unspoilt with nothing but you, the beach and the native wildlife.

Picnic Bay has one of the most picturesque coastlines on the island. A walk along the front takes you to a quaint photography exhibition. There is also the Picnic Bay Pub which serves lunch and dinner plus has a venue perfect for weddings. Picnic Bay also has a safe swimming enclosure for the summer months. RADICAL BAY

You should visit this bay if nothing else for its great name! Radical Bay is at the end of a dirt track so 4WD only. It is also the start of the Forts Walk with quick access to the forts and old gun placements built in WWII. The beach itself is remote and peaceful.

BALDING BAY This secluded bay is only accessible by boat or walking track. If you opt to walk you can start from either Radical or Horseshoe Bay. Visiting Balding Bay feels like your private getaway so be sure to bring a picnic and enough water to sustain you for the whole journey.

NELLY BAY This is the main port, ferry terminal and central hub of the island. Some of the largest hotels are located here and the area is a great place to go for that early morning run or a leisurely walk. Good too for swimming, wind-surfing, sailing a catamaran, or snorkeling on the fringing reef. Towards the northern end of the beach is a sheltered, coin-operated bbq area and a children’s playground.

GEOFFREY BAY This area is the old Arcadia ferry landing making the fish friendly and almost tame. It is a National Park Zone so it is worth noting fishing or removing anything from the beach is forbidden. If you are there at dusk you might be lucky enough to see the rock wallabies.

Burdekin Stay & explore ABOUT One hour south of Townsville and two hours north of the Whitsundays is the quiet, scenic region known as the Burdekin. Home to two main centres, Ayr and Home Hill. With its vibrant community life, lush farmland, magnificent wetlands and extensive natural pursuits like fishing, birdwatching and scuba diving, this lesser-known region is well worth a visit.

CROMARTY

Visitors enjoy a taste of the vibrant rural life in North Queensland. It’s easy to meet the locals, browse the boutique shops or discover more about the local flora and fauna at the Ayr Nature Display. On a Saturday morning Ayr town centre is bustling with locals and tourists. There is a vibrant café scene serving modern breakfast options, freshly squeezed juices and beautiful coffee. The Burdekin has a rich culture and a rich history born from the booming local farming industry. Known as the ‘sugar capital of Australia’ the Burdekin is the largest sugar cane producer in the country. This is prime sugar country, boasting 80,000 hectares of productive sugar cane land and producing an epic 1.25 million tonnes of raw sugar per year.

The region is home to the native Gudjuda aboriginal people and is one of the only districts in Australia which still employs the traditional practice of burning the cane before harvesting. During crushing season look out for the cane trains transporting huge bundles of cane, watch for the large factories pumping pungent sugary steam into the air and witness the landscape light up as the cane fires burn. The Burdekin River Bridge is another striking landmark on the horizon, connecting the towns of Home Hill and Ayr. Known as the ‘Silver Link’, it is over 1000 metres in length, longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the only bridge in Australia without a solid footing. Its huge length makes for a fun car game, try holding your breath from one end to the other as you drive over and see who the winner is! There is a display at the Burdekin Gateway Visitor Information Centre showing how the bridge was constructed. Learn the history of the region first-hand through the passion and insight of the friendly local volunteers.

Ayr is believed to be named after the Scottish town of Ayr, the birthplace of Queensland Premier Sir Thomas McIlwraith VISIT Plantation Park A popular place in the Burdekin for visitors to take photos is located in Plantation Park, Ayr. The giant carpet snake is an impressive feature, and makes a fantastic backdrop. This 60 metre artwork depicts Gubulla Munda, the Aboriginal totem and the protective spirit for the Birri Gubba people. Gubulla Munda holds sacred cultural and spiritual significance to the Traditional Owners.

Also, there are several plaques and a memorial stone. These mark the remains of Birri Gubba ancestors re-interred at this sacred site. The Gudjuda Reference Group commissioned the large sculpture Gubulla Munda Dreaming, which was constructed in 2004. It was painted by aboriginal artists. The monument was created to celebrate and promote indigenous culture.

Café Culture The Burdekin has an excellent variety of charming cafes. On the mainstreet there is a quirky little café called The Chill Parlour which has a delicious breakfast menu, freshly squeezed juices and the perfect blend of coffee for that caffeine fix. The Dal Santos Deli is a vibrant eatery at the East End Centre. They have a sumptuous deli counter with cheeses, meats and assorted deli items. Everything is fresh and homemade with a holiday platter available for takeaway upon request. Just down the road at Home Hill is the Vintage Tea Shop and Craft Café, a popular stop-off for road trippers with ample parking. Inside you can browse the knick-knacks, order a light lunch from the café and enjoy the personal service.

Stay at BIG4 Ayr BIG4 Ayr is a tranquil holiday park with camp sites and villas, close to the town centre and all the local attractions. There is a swimming-pool, playground and soccer field on-site and the friendly team are happy to share local knowledge.

Boat ramps and fishing hot spots By far the district’s greatest claim to fame is its fishing. The Burdekin is wellknown for its barramundi, mudcrabs, other estuary species and off-coast reef fishing. The district has one of the highest rates of boat ownership per head of population and many locals have fishing huts at Ocean Creek, Plantation Creek, Groper Creek or Wunjunga. You can launch your boat at one of the boat ramps to chase the elusive barra or try a bit of beach fishing. Council maintains eight boat ramps located within the shire on behalf of Queensland Transport. These boat ramps are located at Cromarty Creek, Barramundi (Morris’s) Creek, Barratta Creek, Ocean Creek, Plantation Creek, Hell Hole, Groper Creek and Wallace Creek.

Home Hill Rest Stop Home Hill offers a free, 48 hour stop over for caravans, motor trailers and camper vans at its rest stop, conveniently located on Railway Avenue, right in the centre of town. Wash the dust of the journey off in a free shower and cook dinner the electric bbq provided, prepare your meal on a stainless steel bench and sit around a picnic table. This is rest stop with a difference! Its central location means it is a short stroll to get bbq supplies or find the local tavern for a cold beverage.

THINGS TO DO WHITSUNDAYS GETTING AROUND By Taxi call 131 008 Taxis are available throughout the Whitsunday region, 24 hours per day.

By Water Cruise Whitsundays operates ferries and island connections between Hamilton Island Airport, Airlie Beach, Long Island, Daydream Island, South Molle Island and many island resorts. It also provides tours to Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef. Please be aware that they are now located at a brand new terminal building at the Port of Airlie.

Swim at Cedar Creek Falls After the recent rainfall Cedar Creek Falls is bound to be flowing. You can find Cedar Creek Falls on Saltwater Creek Road, off Conway Beach Road about half way between Airlie Beach and Proserpine. Swim within a rock amphitheatre at the base of Cedar Creek waterfall, a large pristine pool which is a local favourite for swimming. Remember to take your insect repellant as mosquitoes can be found in concentrated numbers in the bush. There is abundant flora and fauna including majestic white cedar trees, Alexandra palms, wild orchids, colourful butterflies and many beautiful birds. The waterhole is an easy walk from the parking area and there are also bush walks up and around the falls for the more energetic. Share the cool, clear waters of the rock pool with fish, turtles, lizards and maybe a few other humans.

Tours and Transport Services Whitsunday Transit provides transfer services to and from the Whitsunday Coast Airport, meeting every single flight, every day. Transfers from the airport through to Airlie Beach take approximately 40 mins and all passengers are transferred on spacious air-conditioned coaches. MUST-DO IN THE WHITSUNDAYS The Peter Faust Dam Just 30 minutes from Proserpine is Peter Faust Dam, also known as Lake Proserpine. It is an ideal spot for watersports and freshwater fishing. Peter Faust Dam is renowned as home to more 1m plus barramundi than any other impoundment in Australia. A combination of tropical climate with long summers and mild winters, the dam can be fished all year round and is annually restocked with over 20,000 barramundi fingerlings. The submerged branches and structure surrounding the lake make it the ideal spot for other species like sooty grunter, sleepy cod and saratoga. Local fishing tackle stores and guided trips are available all year round.
Lake Proserpine plays host to fishing competitions, with campground accommodation at Camp Kanga closeby making it an ideal sports fishing destination. Bring your crab pots too because redclaw and freshwater crayfish also inhabit the lake. There is a concrete boat ramp to take craft up to 8m situated next to the bbq areas.

Hydeaway Bay Hydeaway Bay and its sister town Dingo Beach are situated at the northern end of the Whitsundays, accessible by road from Airlie Beach. Quiet and secluded, these little hamlets are perfect for those seeking some rest and relaxation on long, sandy beaches with hardly another soul in sight. Endless horizons and picturesque views dotted with islands can be seen from numerous vantage points, and the hungry, thirsty or weary can stop for a bite to eat, a refreshing beverage or a night’s sleep at one of the two establishments at Cape Gloucester or private holiday houses by prior arrangement.

Breathtaking beaches, the Big Mango and the Bowen Jetty, find out why Bowen is one of Queensland’s most desirable holiday picks.

HISTORICAL

As North Queensland’s oldest town, Bowen is brimming with history, especially at the Bowen Historical Museum on Gordon Street. Discover the early geological surrounds of the district, followed by early indigenous inhabitance to the early European settlers. The Gothenburg is one of the most famous shipwrecks on the Queensland Coast with the loss of more than 100 lives, with relics from the wreck on display in the museum. The Bowen Aerodrome is home to a Catalina museum, commemorating the involvement Bowen had as a base for Catalina flying boats during World War II. The museum contains five dioramas all built on 1/72 scale. Even a gentle meander through the streets will unearth interesting locations. Known as the mural capital of Australia, Bowen has more than 25 intricately painted mural sites. They depict a diverse history from the town’s early settlement, involvement with World War II to present day industry. You can find a list of mural sites by visiting the Bowen Information Centre at the Big Mango. From the ‘Bowenwood’ water tank to the historical CBD buildings, enjoy discovering beautiful Bowen in the northern Whitsundays region. Breathtaking beaches, the Big Mango and the Bowen Jetty, find out why Bowen is one of Queensland’s most desirable holiday picks.

Beautiful Beaches

With eight award-winning beaches to explore, Bowen offers beachgoers a veritable paradise to explore.

Best pick - Horseshoe Bay With soft-as-silk white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water, Horseshoe Bay is the jewel in the Bowen crown. Perfect for swimming, it also features a nearby coral reef, perfect for snorkelling straight off the beach. Horseshoe Bay is a perfect place to stay with a variety of accommodation options, the friendly Whitsunday Sands, the 4.5 star Coral Cove or the beachy cabins at Horseshoe Bay Resort. Stop for a bite at the Horseshoe Bay café and indulge in some rock scampering across the scenic bays.

Queen’s Beach is Bowen’s longest with 5km of white sand to stroll. Free public barbecues line the beachfront among tropical landscaping for an idyllic location to experience a beachfront barbecue at sunset. Rose Bay is an award-winning slice of paradise, with magnificent views across the Whitsunday Islands of Gloucester and Middle. Front Beach has been transformed into a colourful recreation area perfect for families to relax and have fun. Its foreshore precinct includes a water park, children’s playground, outdoor amphitheatre, grassy picnic areas and barbecues, a skate park and Catalina Interpretive Centre. Winding through the precinct are shared pedestrian and cycle trails, with plaques which showcase significant historical events which shaped modern-day Bowen. BOWEN JETTY Not far from the foreshore on Santa Barbara Parade, visit Bowen’s famous jetty. In 2007, Bowen was used to portray 1930s Darwin in Baz Luhrmann’s film, Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. The jetty was heavily featured in the movie.

BIG MANGO On Bowen’s southern entrance on the Bruce Highway, keep an eye out for the famous ‘Big Mango’ at the Bowen Visitor Information Centre. An excellent photo opportunity at 10 metres tall, this mango statue is indeed the largest in the world! Bowen is famous for growing large numbers of juicy, golden mangoes. Ask at the Information Centre for the 100% Bowen mango sorbet. It is a totally healthy, utterly delicious treat!

ABSOLUTE WATERFRONT HOLIDAY PARK

sea view and family villas with private deck

WHERE IS BIG4 BOWEN LOCATED? Bowen is a small seaside town at the northern end of the Whitsundays. It was made famous by being the film set of the classic movie ‘Australia’ with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. The town has some of the most beautiful beaches on the Whitsunday Coast and BIG4 Bowen is sandwiched right between two of the best. Go to Queens Beach for a long walk or visit Horseshoe Bay for a scramble up the smooth sandstone rocks. Both beaches are within a three minute drive of the BIG4 Bowen. The holiday park is also five minutes from the centre of town, shops, pubs and supermarket.

WHAT MAKES BIG4 BOWEN SO SPECIAL? The sea-front villas give uninterrupted, totally majestic views out to sea. They are surrounded by lush green lawns, picnic benches and communal bbq areas. It’s the sort of park where everyone who walks by says hello and this, combined with the welcoming reception, creates a community atmosphere making you feel instantly at home.

WHAT SORT OF FACILITIES ARE THERE? BIG4 Bowen is a boutique holiday park and because of its relatively small size it has an intimate feel. There is a large lagoon style swimming-pool with sunbeds, umbrellas for shade and a safe shallow area for young children to swim

accompanied by an adult. There is a camp kitchen with a coffee vending machine and communal area where you can watch FOXTEL T.V. There are also laundry facilities on-site, a games room for the kids and the opportunity to book tours and activities from reception.

WHAT WAS YOUR ROOM LIKE? We were lucky enough to stay in a sea-front villa. The villa was incredibly clean with a fully-equipped kitchen, stove, fridge/freezer, microwave etc. We had a private queen room located at the back of the cabin and there was room for two kids in the bunkbeds just outside the door, if we had brought them. Instead we enjoyed peace and tranquility, sipping chilled wine and looking out to sea for a romantic weekend, just the two of us! My favourite part of the room was the spa bath, we only have a shower at home so it had been a long time since I was able stretch out and enjoy the luxury of a spa.

WOULD YOU GO BACK AGAIN? Yes, of course! The small town feel of Bowen is the perfect getaway, the chance to feel truly on holiday even if it’s just for the weekend. It was easy to wind down at BIG4 Bowen, I felt a relaxed vibe from the moment we arrived. Any other opportunity I get to return to Bowen I would choose a sea-front villa at the BIG4 every time!

amazing

irlie Beach

Airlie Beach was named the sub-division of ‘Airlie’ in 1935 by Robert Shephard who was born in Scotland and named the town after a Scottish town called the Parish of Airlie. Throughout its younger years the town was an isolated outpost that only the most adventurous managed to discover. These times have often been described as the ‘Glory Days’, nostalgically by the early pioneers. Back in the 1960’s Airlie Beach was a simple town with untouched natural environment and the bare basics of life. The beautiful township of Airlie Beach is one of few east coast towns that has a north facing aspect. This means that the town has protection from the prevailing south east trade winds. Therefore the township ship itself is usually balmy and tropical. In the early 1990’s Airlie Beach became a popular backpacker haven, which it still is to this day. In more recent years the towns reputation has diversified. Assisted by the $22 million dollar main-street upgrade, the town is now attracting a more upmarket clientele. These days there is an eclectic mix of transient tourists and holiday-makers; backpackers, families, romantic couples and groups of friends all visit Airlie Beach for its laid-back charming life-style and sparkling turquoise waters.

Things To Do In Airlie Beach GO SAILING OF COURSE!

The Whitsundays is known around the world for its beautiful sailing experiences, Whitehaven Beach and the fringing reefs, perfect for snorkeling. You can choose from a plethora of day trips, overnight sailing adventures or even hire your own boat. Flick through this magazine and you will see more information about the various tours on offer.

GO CAMPING ON WHITEHAVEN BEACH Enjoy nature at its most beautiful and remote with a camping experience on Whitehaven Beach. Be the only people on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, see the stars shine brighter than you’ve ever seen them shine before and wake up for an early morning swim in the crystal clear water with no-one else around. You can jump on a barge which will take you to the beach, drop you, your friends and your camping gear off, then return to pick you up the next morning.

SATURDAY MARKETS Every Saturday as the sun comes up Airlie Beach foreshore comes alive. Stall holders from around the region gather to put on a lively market show. Mango sorbet fresh from Bowen, farmers selling their delicious homegrown vegetables, stunning Australian opals, nautical giftware, homemade jewelry and fashion, this market has you browsing for hours. Buskers are playing music, there is sandcastle art and you can even get a massage at a bargain $20 for 20 minutes!

WALK ALONG THE BOARDWALK Whether you enjoy a soft, gentle stroll or leap out of bed in the morning for a fast jog, the Airlie Beach Bicentennial Walk-way is a simply stunning, must-do activity that everyone would enjoy. The wooden boardwalk, built in 1988, hugs the coastline and gives you uninterrupted views out to sea, almost at sea level. The 3.7kn boardwalk links Airlie Beach to Abell Point Marina and then onwards to Cannonvale Beach. The scenic round trip takes roughly 2 hours.

AIRLIE BEACH LAGOON The Airlie Beach lagoon is 4500 square metres in area and holds 4 1/2 million litres of fresh water.
The lagoon was opened in 2001 by Peter Beattie and is situated right in the centre of Airlie Beach. The lagoon has become the focal point of the area. When you want to meet someone you meet “at the Lagoon”. If you want a great day of relaxation with no admission fee, “spend a day at the Lagoon”. And the most rewarding thing of all is that the people of the Whitsundays have taken the Lagoon to their heart as much as tourists and visitors. The lagoon is surrounded by grassy knolls, perfect for a spot of sunbathing, or finding a quiet spot in the shade to read a book. The sandy beach area at one end provides a safe stinger free environment for the children to play in the shallows and the lagoon is surrounded by landscaped gardens for added aesthetic appeal. A children’s pool is situated at one end.

HISTORY

The Whitsunday Islands were named by Captain James Cook who sailed through the area in 1770 on his voyage of discovery of Australia. He sailed through the area on the Christian festival day of Whit Sunday, also known as Pentecost. Archaeological research points to 8000 years of Aboriginal habitation in this area, most recently by the Ngaro people who ranged far and wide through the high country around Proserpine and travelled from island to island in bark canoes. Wall paintings in caves at Nara Inlet on Hook Island indicate rich sea harvests of fish, turtle and local rock oysters. Early white settlers ranged from shipwrecked sailors to timber cutters, and by the 1880s pastoral leases were being granted on several of the larger islands. In the hinterland, Proserpine grew up to service sugar plantations which went into serious decline when the government banned the use of Pacific Islanders (Kanakas) as cane field labourers and mill workers. The birth of tourism in the Whitsundays came in the 1920s, when passengers on the thriving coastal trade were given a day ashore on a tropical island -- usually South Molle. School holiday camps were also held twice a year by academics studying the reef and marine sciences, and eventually a permanent base was set up on Hayman Island.

“If you are looking for a Whitsunday fishing adventure with plenty of action, local knowledge and personalised service, look no further! Coral Sea Fishing Charters are the local experts in fishing the Whitsunda waters, always securing the catch of the day and plenty of exciting memories along the way!

gateway to the whitsundays GEOGRAPHY The Whitsundays are internationally famous for their rugged, green-clad islands, blue waters and white sands. But behind that beauty lies much more: a tumultuous geological history, a long tradition of Indigenous use, and a complex ecosystem with thousands of animal and plants, including rare and endangered species.

Why is the sea so blue? Many visitors are amazed by the distinct aquamarine shade of the sea throughout the Whitsundays. Very fine sediment suspended in the region’s waters scatters sunlight as it penetrates the water, creating the shade of blue that makes the Whitsundays famous.

10 million years ago volcanoes were active in what was to become Australia. The Whitsundays lay in a geologically active zone, where volcanic activity continued for 37 million years. Explosive eruptions threw rock and ash into the air to rain down on the surrounding land. Layers of volcanic debris built up and gradually formed solid bedrock. Today, this bedrock, composed of ash and rock fragments ‘welded’ together. This hardened rock appears as a smooth greenish grey to brown, and is worn away by saltwater wave action giving the Whitsundays Islands their classic look and unique beauty.

Why is the sand so white? Why are the Whitsunday Islands rocky? The rocky islands of the Whitsundays are ‘continental’ islands—that is, they were once part of a mainland mountain range on the continent of Australia. Over millions of years, these mountains have separated from, and then rejoined, the mainland a number of times, as ice ages have come and gone and sea levels have risen and fallen. The most recent change happened around 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. Glaciers melted, and the Coral Sea rose over the coastal plain, leaving only mountaintops and ridges exposed which are the rocky Whitsunday islands we see today.

Contrasting with the brilliant blue of the sea is the fine, white, silica sands of Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. Whitehaven differs from most beaches in the Whitsundays, which tend to have coarser sand that includes fragments of shell and coral. Whitehaven Beach is 98% silica sand, the sand is so fine you can exfoliate your face and polish your jewelry with it. The fine white sand originated from further down the Queensland coast, carried by prevailing sea currents millions of years ago. It was then trapped by rocks and headlands and over time the impurities were leached from the sand by fresh water leaving the fine white silica you see today.

PIONEER JET

YOUR ULTIMATE JET BOAT ADVENTURE WHAT IS THIS TOUR? Pioneer Jet is a 30 minute high speed jet boat ride, taking up to 13 guests for a rollercoaster adventure around Pioneer Bay, just off the coast of Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays. The 6.5m jet boat, Cheeky Bee, is powered by a 6 litre Cummins Diesel engine coupled to a Hamilton 292 Jet propulsion, pumping out a whopping 600 litres of water every second! This is a huge 380 horse power, hitting speeds of up to 38 knots (75kph). And if this is not impressive enough, the jet boat also pulls some pretty awesome stunts. From 180’s to 360’s, power slides to sub marines. The sub marine is like going from 70 km per hour to zero in a split second, the nose of the boat duck dives under the water sending a wave crashing over the boat, totally drenching everyone on-board. Prepare to get wet and have some serious fun!

WHERE DOES THE TOUR GO? Pioneer Jet offer a free courtesy pick-up service from local hotels or if you prefer to find your own way there you can meet the friendly crew down at Abell Point Marina. Once onboard we cruised sedately out of the marina, passing the heads and then held on tight as the jet engines burst into life and propelled us out across the bay. The water was calm, the sun was shining and the driver cranked some awesome beats as we skimmed across the open water. It wasn’t long before the skipper raised his arm and made a circular motion, we braced ourselves and watched as the boat suddenly span around on the spot jumping up like a bucking bull and twisting us into a 360. Water splashed from every angle and within a few seconds we were back in a stable position, big grins on every face and absolutely drenched! From here we went to Mandalay Point to see a million dollar mansion and then raced across back across Pioneer Bay pulling power slides and 180’s before circling Pigeon Island and the iconic Whitsunday Magic wreck. This area is teaming with turtles who love eating the sea grass so we stopped for a few minutes and saw dozens of little heads breach the surface. Our skipper was full of local and marine knowledge which was fun and informative to listen to.

From seeing the pictures of the Whitsundays we knew that the scenery would be spectacular but seeing it first-hand just cannot compare to any postcard! Topped by such a high level personalised service, the crew were absolutely brilliant. We brought our young child onboard and they made sure she was happy and entertained the whole way. Our first stop was a snorkel site and we all jumped in the water, supervised by the attentive crew, sharing the pristine water with an array of colourful fish, coral and turtles at Bali Hai. We then headed to world renowned Whitehaven Beach, dubbed the best beach in Australia and third best in the world. After snapping some great shots of the swirling white sands we headed to the southern end of Whitehaven for a beautiful swim and relax. Then, to finish the day, we were dropped off at a stunning island resort, Daydream Island, where we spent the afternoon poolside enjoying a relaxing end to an action-packed day – just perfect!

WHERE IS IT LOCATED?

The boat departs from Shute Harbour Marina, about 10 minutes from Airlie Beach. We were collected from our hotel in a very comfortable courtesy coach to check-in with the friendly Reefstar Crew at their kiosk alongside the boat.

WHY CHOOSE THIS TOUR?

This is a comfortable tour suitable for all ages and physical abilities. Even though the ferry could accommodate more people, the company like to keep it comfortable and intimate so we had a lot of space in our fully-air-conditioned ferry. The service too, was simply brilliant and being able to enjoy three different activities; the snorkel, the beach and the tropical island resort gave us the best value for money, leaving us with the most memorable day.

WHAT DID IT COST AND WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?

The Tour was $180 per adult, but we took advantage of the great family rate of $500, which included 2 adults and 2 children up to 16 years. It included everything – we only needed our togs and towels! From an all-day morning tea, buffet lunch, chilled water, sunscreen, insect repellent, snorkelling equipment, stinger suit… it seems like too much to mention. The tour also gave an option to join the Glass Bottom Boat for no extra cost, this was great for bub and me.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND?

For sure. The attention to service from the crew was outstanding, we never dreamed of fitting so much into one day!

Merit A unique sailing experience She’s gorgeous. She likes to play with the big boys. She does get around. And with a belly made of Kevlar and a bottom made of lead, she's perfect. 'Merit Cup' placed second in the prestigious 97/98 Whitbread/Volvo Round the World Ocean Race. As 'Indec Merit', 'Line 7 Merit', and 'Telcoinabox' she's played closer to home, having contested the Rolex Sydney Hobart many times and winning her division in 2008, even after stopping to rescue the crew of 'Georgia'. She's the race record holder for the Gosford-Lord Howe Ocean Race and placed in numerous other events. She's on again this August, with places filling for both Airlie Beach and the Audi Hamilton Island Race Weeks. Look her up on YouTube and hear the awesome belly laughter of the 'big boys and their toy' as the previous owner, Leo Rodriguez, and his crew hit 30 knots of boat speed sailing in the Sydney Hobart. But you don't have to be a racer. You can discover what high-performance sailing feels like and explore the most beautiful snorkel sites in the Whitsundays by jumping on for a day sail. Michele from Essendon was a little nervous about stepping aboard, but loved it, saying, "I do not enjoy being on a boat. I get scared and I get ill, but today was a different story and I loved this trip. Jo, Michael and the crew were fantastic. We had a brilliant day of snorkelling, swimming and sailing. Everything about this trip was just fantastic and we will definitely do it again when we return to Airlie Beach. I think I may even like boats now!” If you like, get involved in hoisting the sails. Or, if you prefer, sit back and watch someone else do the work. On those days when the wind's up and the idea of travelling on the water doesn't sound so great, 'Merit' will show you it's the perfect time to get out and feel the adrenaline as she slices through the Whitsunday Passage! Unique experiences and small group travel options play a big part in our holiday decisions these days. Oh, and great food helps! If those appeal to you, secure your booking and enjoy the beautiful cooler season coming our way.

I really enjoyed my experience at Seehouse Teahouse. The staff made me feel like I had walked into their home, we had high-tea which was absolutely delicious - it was genuine homemade cakes, scones, quiche, sausage rolls etc which isn’t common anymore. Oh and did I mention they have a kids playroom so I could actually sit & enjoy my morning tea. I would and have highly recommended this business. It is a must whether you are passing by or want to plan a sweet little escape. Maria Langford, Mackay

NORTHERN BEACHES

CAPE HILLSBOROUGH

EUNGELLA NATIONAL PARK

Mackay’s Northern Beaches are only 20 minutes away from the city centre, with an abundance of sandy shorelines for you to make your own.

Cape Hillsborough is approximately 50km from Mackay and takes 50 minutes to drive.

The drive from Mackay to Finch Hatton is 63km and takes approximately 50 minutes, while it takes an additional 20 minutes to get from Finch Hatton to Eungella, the heart of Eungella National Park.

Black’s Beach is Mackay’s longest continuous beach, stretching 6km, making it perfect for a long seaside walk. Eimeo beach is a popular swimming beach, in a small sheltered bay with soft white sand. Drive under the canopy of mango trees at Mango Avenue, a heritagelisted attraction forming a shaded canopy above the streetscape, before arriving at the beach. Bucasia beach is a stunning stretch of sand, an expansive and picturesque beach. Enjoy a coffee at the café across the road. Shoal Point Beach enjoys an ever-changing vista, a beautiful blue beach at high tide, which transforms into sand as far as the eye can see during low tide. Take a stroll to the popular ‘dead tree’ along the beach and watch a beautiful sunset.

As you head toward Cape Hillsborough from Mackay, stop into the interesting rustic tavern at The Leap. View the intriguing monument of an aboriginal woman and find out how the area earned its name. Then, view a range of beautiful gemstones. Enjoy high tea or a coffee amongst tropical gardens on Cape Hillsborough Road, in the old Marian Train Station, which was relocated and transformed into a gorgeous tea house. Once at Cape Hillsborough, check the tide, as at low tide you can walk across the causeway to Wedge Island, a serene island with a beautiful little beach and popular snorkeling locations. Keep an eye on the incoming tide or choose to kayak to and from the island at your leisure. Otherwise, walk the Diversity Boardwalk and search for aboriginal middens and discover a beautiful array of flora and fauna.

Enjoy a coffee amongst the canefields in Pinnacle, before arriving at Finch Hatton Gorge. Walk the well-formed track to the Araulen Cascades, and enjoy a refreshing swim in one of the many clear rock pools found in the rainforest. Continue through the rainforest to the lookout above Wheel of Fire Waterfall. This walk does include a number of stairs, but the view is well worth the effort. Drive to Eungella and view the changing vista of the Pioneer Valley from elevated viewpoints. The Sky Window walk will lead you through brilliant rainforest to a gorgeous photo opportunity point. Venture to the Broken River trail to the viewing platform, for the chance to see the playful platypus, eels or turtles.
