Whitehaven Beach

KICK THE BUCKET LIST

Run on the most breathtaking beach in the world.

Dreams, ambition, wanderlust; whatever you want to call it, determination drives you to be a better version of yourself every day. We all need that special something to strive for. There are those goals that we can say we’ve ticked off that seem to be on everyone’s bucket list, but what about those rare opportunities to do something truly momentous? This is when we don’t just tick the bucket list, we break it. Whitehaven Beach is a destination that tops many such ambition lists. Its fine white sand contrasted against vivid turquoise water, it’s hard to believe even when you’re standing on the beach itself with your jaw wide-open. The many coves and inlets that dot its surrounds only serve to add to the breathtaking beauty. SO HOW CAN YOU TOP THE ALREADY EPIC ADVENTURE THAT IS WHITEHAVEN? You push yourself in paradise. Every June, runners and walkers from all walks of life take to the pristine sand of Whitehaven Beach for the fun and challenging Great Whitehaven Beach Run. It’s part of the Hamilton Island Endurance Series, a selection of four events spanning from May through to November. These include the Hamilton Hilly Marathon, Great Whitehaven Beach Run, Hamilton Island Triathlon and Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim. The idea is to ‘Race Hard and Recover Harder’ among the beautiful paradise that is Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays. This year’s Great Whitehaven Beach Run was the most successful

South Wales, including two American students, Rachel Kipper and Julianna Maxwell, who were in Australia for a six week course in Sydney. The women’s half marathon length run was taken out by another American, Leia Wang. There were also competitors from Ireland, Germany and Brazil. Next on the Endurance Series calendar are the Fujifilm Hamilton Island Triathlon and the Fujifilm Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim taking place Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th November. The triathlon takes place in one of the most visually spectacular places on Earth. Complete a 750m swim in beautifully clear Catseye Bay, a 20km cycle including a unique airport runway section and a 5km run through the island’s chic Marina Village. Olympians, Emma Jackson and Susie O’Neill will be welcomed back to Hamilton Island for the event as well as rising stars, Sophie Malowecki and Jake Birtwhistle plus cross-fit personality Kahn Porter. Fresh from Rio, Ryan Bailie will also be a drawcard. But you don’t need to be an Olympian to enjoy the festivities. The event is open to all abilities. You can enter as a team and there is also a junior section; so the entire family can participate. Take part in the Dent Dash; where you can run or walk the course of the picturesque Hamilton Island Golf Club on neighbouring Dent Island. Choose either a 9-hole or 18-hole ‘course’ and enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast afterwards. Challenge yourself to do something great and don’t just tick off your bucket list; smash it to pieces!

yet, attracting 264 competitors ranging from children to masters, officially setting a record for the most people running together on Whitehaven Beach. Not only did the competitors get to collectively break this record, they got to do it alongside Australian running legend, Steve Moneghetti. Moneghetti was the 2015 ambassador for the Hamilton Island Hilly Half Marathon, returning in 2016 as the ambassador for the Whitehaven Beach event. Running the 10km distance, Moneghetti set a world-class pace to finish in just over 34 minutes.

More information on the Hamilton Island Endurance Series can be found on hamiltonisland.com.au. Registrations are already open for next year’s Whitehaven Beach Run. Lock in your entry now, enjoy the training and prepare to take part in one of the best events on Earth.

At the peak of his career, he could run 10km in less than 30 minutes, but given this event is completely on sand, the master Moneghetti showed he is still impressively competitive in his fifties by winning comfortably. Competitors were able to mingle with Moneghetti the day before the event with a parkrun on Hamilton Island, followed by a running technique clinic, afternoon yoga and then a ‘Meal with Mona’ where Moneghetti talked about his career in an informal meet and greet at Manta Ray Café, followed by dinner. It’s these special opportunities which make the Hamilton Island Endurance Series unlike any other. The opportunity to run with Steve Moneghetti on Whitehaven Beach attracted competitors from every state and territory in Australia as well as a selection of international entrants. More than 50 competitors travelled from Victoria and New

Paronella Park PLEASE GIVE US A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF WHAT VISITORS WILL FIND AT PARONELLA PARK:

Paronella Park is a magical little secret located at Mena Creek, south of Cairns. The setting for such a beautiful love story is set on 5 hectares of lush tropical greenery. You can walk around the grounds with your knowledgeable guide and explore a beautiful castle, sit beside a soothing waterfall, feed the turtles, discover tunnels or just relax and take in the awe inspiring surroundings. You can choose to do either a day or evening tour.

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHY YOU CHOSE TO VISIT PARONELLA PARK:

I travelled the East Coast of Australia with my family when I was about 8 years old. I remember it being such an amazing experience at Paronella Park. It was somewhere I would never forget. When I travelled with my daughter around the same age I wanted to give her the same memories and experiences of such a beautiful place, one of which she still talks of many years later. We will continue to travel back to Paronella Park time and time again.

WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF YOUR EXPERIENCE AT PARONELLA PARK?

You feel like you can step out of the real world and into a fairy-tale. Visiting the fruition of a man’s dreams and vision is truly inspirational. The best part of my experience was learning about the history of the “how & why” Paronella Park exists.

WHAT MAKES PARONELLA PARK SO SPECIAL?

For such a colourful yet tragic family history, the natural devastation which the grounds and castle has endured over the years, there is still such beauty and a serene calmness. Anyone can enjoy the park from solo travellers, families to grey nomads. It appeals to almost every demographic.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND PARONELLA PARK TO A FRIEND?

Absolutely! Although it is such a beautiful little gem that we may want to keep a secret, the park relies solely on people walking through the front door. It is one of the only Heritage Listed Tourist attractions which doesn’t receive government funding, therefore, it is important for tourists to continue visiting.

DID YOU KNOW –The saltwater crocodile is a formidable and opportunistic predator

The Jaws of Jupiter The hollow thud-crack sound you hear when a crocodile snaps shut its mighty jaws is an unforgettable sound. It’s only when you are up close to one of these mighty and magnificent prehistoric animals that you get a true appreciation for their presence and power. DID YOU KNOW? The saltwater crocodile, also known as the estuarine or IndoPacific crocodile, is the largest of all living reptiles. They are affectionately known by the locals as “Salties.” Crocodiles are one of the most-anticipated visitor attractions at Billabong Sanctuary and 4.3 metre ‘Jupiter’ is one of the stars. Jupiter was captured earlier this year by Department of Environment and Heritage rangers from Cairns and Townsville. He was snared off Townsville’s popular main beachfront strip, The Strand. The location was near The Ville, formerly Jupiter’s Casino, the inspiration for his iconically Townsville name. Weighing more than 500kg, it took five rangers and two police officers to lift him. Due to Jupiter’s very large size, greater than four metres, he was classified as an iconic crocodile and under conservation laws, indigenous elders must be consulted. The crocodile is a prominent figure in aboriginal culture, appearing frequently in the culture of tribes throughout North Queensland. The elders from the Wulgurukaba and Bindal aboriginal groups were consulted as to where Jupiter would be housed. The elders wanted the crocodile to stay in their area and go to Billabong Sanctuary because of its commitment to education and conservation. Jupiter can be seen by visitors to the park at the 1pm and 3:15pm crocodile feeding shows. In the short space of a few months, Jupiter has settled in well at Billabong Sanctuary. He is often seen sunning himself on the banks of his enclosure and eats well during the feeding show. He’s estimated to be around 60 years of age, which is pretty old for a crocodile, but he is in good health. He has a long battle scar down one side of his body, only a few teeth and one eye. Although Jupiter is mightily impressive, he’s not the biggest crocodile at Billabong Sanctuary! Bully, who was caught near Halifax, is 4.5 metres long and weighs a hefty 750kgs! At the twice daily crocodile shows at 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., Billabong rangers feed estuarine crocodiles and dispel the many myths about them. Importantly they explain how to stay safe in the crocodile’s territory. DO CROCODILES ACTUALLY CRY CROCODILE TEARS?

Billabong Sanctuary Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and, to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please and, as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m. Billabong Sanctuary is Australia’s best interactive wildlife experience! At wildlife encounters, you can pat a dingo, hand-feed a cassowary, hold a koala or hug a wombat. Get a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile.

“Crying crocodile tears” comes from the myth that crocodiles cry when eating prey. They do secrete tear-like liquid from their eyes but it’s not believed to be linked to emotion. This then led to the notion that the tears that crocodiles produced were insincere, hence the term crocodile tears referring to displaying fake sadness.

Billabong Sanctuary funds the koala hospital on Magnetic Island with part of the proceeds of koala photo sales.

CROC FACTS

They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform you on many misconceptions people may have about different animals.

There are two types of crocodiles in Australia, the freshwater crocodile and the saltwater crocodile. Both are native to tropical North Queensland. Freshwater crocodiles have longer, thinner snouts compared to the salties who have a broader snout. Saltwater crocodiles also have distinctively differing teeth size, but we don’t recommend getting close enough in the wild to tell the difference! The saltwater crocodile is a formidable and opportunistic predator. While their diet usually consists of small marine prey, such as turtles, they can be powerful enough to take a one tonne water buffalo off the bank. When crocodiles sit on river banks with their mouths open, it’s not because they are about to eat something. They’re trying to cool off as they sweat through their mouths.

At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give.

One of the most misunderstood native animals in Australia is the dingo. See a different side to this magnificent creature and then pose for a photo and pat the friendly dingoes. The Sanctuary has Advanced Accreditation with the Australian Ecotourism Association due to its efforts in education, conservation and captive breeding programmes for endangered species such as the cassowary. Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

BILLABONG SANCTUARY – A WILD EXPERIENCE EVERY DAY!

Cuddle a koala, pet a kangaroo and hold a wombat. Get up close and personal with your favourite native Australian animal, at Billabong Sanctuary.

Great Palm Island is an Aboriginal community of 3500 residents located on a beautiful remote island in the Great Barrier Reef. The ferry ride itself was an adventure, whisking us through some of the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen on the Great Barrier Reef. As soon as we arrived on the island the locals greeted us with a traditional dance that was so full of energy and pride, we were instantly mesmerized. We found it easy to interact with the locals and explore the island at our own pace. The local community had a friendly atmosphere and everyone we met was warm and welcoming, eager to share their history and culture. It was amazing to experience such a remote island and Aboriginal community living together first-hand in a way largely un-touched by modernday society.

WHAT TOURS ARE AVAILABLE AND WHAT DO THEY INCLUDE? We chose the ‘Come Over’ package which includes the ferry ride over, the traditional welcome, a walk around the markets, lunch stalls with local tuckers and the opportunity to explore the beachside. There are two other tours available though, the first is the ‘History Package’. This includes everything in the ‘Come Over’ package plus a one hour interactive walk with a local guide along the shores of the Coolgaree Bay, an introduction to the island landmarks, stories of the island’s rich heritage and tales of growing up there. The second is the ‘Arts Package’. This again, includes everything in the ‘Come Over’ package plus traditional weaving with experienced artists and an introduction to indigenous painting. We spoke to some guests that did this tour and they loved it. They were even given a memento to take home with them. It is also possible to book all 3 packages as a bundle, giving you the best value for money for the day.

WHO WOULD ENJOY THIS TOUR? Anyone interested in Aboriginal history and culture who is looking to experience something a little different. This tour is a great day out for families too. There is a lot for kids to do and it is a very interactive experience for them.

Tropical Topless Car Rentals Why choose Topless Car Rentals? Magnetic Island is best explored by car as the island is full of scenic, winding roads offering stunning views out to sea that are fun to traverse in a vehicle. Travelling the island by car meant we could explore at our own pace and spend time in the places we liked most. I was travelling with my dad and I knew how much he loves convertible cars so Topless Car Rentals seemed like the perfect choice for us! What is included? All you need is a current manual international driver’s license and you are all set. Customers can travel up to 40km without having to pay any extra for fuel (which is easy to do on a 12km island) and the depot is a one minute walk from the islands ferry terminal. The only rule is to avoid the islands un-sealed roads so we couldn’t drive down to the some of the secluded bays. This still left us with plenty to do though and it was invigorating to feel the breeze in our hair and jet around the island in an open top car. What is so special about Topless Car Rentals? The easy walk from the marina to get to our hire car was very convenient. We were met by extremely friendly staff who showed us straight to our car. The topless car has a fun feeling and has no doors so you need to swing your leg over to get in. It is also well-suited to island travelling as it is small and compact, easy to maneuver. Would you recommend the topless car to a friend? Of course! We found it to be an exhilarating and fun way to explore the island. It was easy to drive and the open top meant we could see, feel and breathe the island atmosphere. Images courtesy Tourism & Events QLD

Meet the owner and guide at Horseshoe Ranch, Magnetic Island! SAMMY ATKINSON

HI, MY NAME IS SAMMY ATKINSON. I AM 29 YEARS OLD AND THE PROUD OWNER OF HORSESHOE BAY RANCH ON MAGNETIC ISLAND. EVERY DAY WE TAKE PEOPLE OUT ON AMAZING HORSEBACK RIDING ADVENTURES, ALONG THE STUNNING HORSESHOE BAY BEACH AND THEN BAREBACK INTO THE OCEAN FOR A TRULY BREATHTAKING, ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE. IF YOU LOVE HORSES, YOU WILL LOVE THIS TOUR! COME AND CHECK US OUT.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I am North Queensland born and bred. Growing up on a cattle station, my mum had all us kids on the back of a horse before we could walk. She was, and still is, a very talented horse rider and taught me a great deal of what I know today. I have spent most of my life in the saddle but that is where my love of horses first came from.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?

I first came to Maggie in 2007 and didn’t want to leave. Bluey’s Horse Ranch was for sale and so in 2008 I bought the business and not long after that we became Horseshoe Bay Ranch. After 8 long years of learning, making improvements and a great deal of help from family and friends, we now have a business and tour experience we are extremely proud of.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR TOUR?

Swimming with the horses of course! Also the numerous wildlife encounters. We see koalas, wallabies, sea eagles and turtles on most of our tours and even whales in the winter months. My favourite, though, would have to be riding through the swarms of brilliantly coloured Blue Tiger butterflies which only come out at certain times of the year.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

The horses! Working with horses every day is a dream. It’s not for everyone but definitely for me. They become your family, your best friends and I couldn’t imagine a life without them. Secondly, our customers. I meet so many interesting people on a daily basis. I get to share our horses and beautiful island with them and watch them experience swimming with their horse for the first time. They tell me every day I have one of the best jobs in the world, if not the best, and I believe them.

WHAT WILL PEOPLE LEARN ON YOUR TOUR?

If you have never ridden a horse before, you will learn the basics of controlling your horse. You will have full control of your own horse for the whole tour and our experienced guides are on hand to answer any questions you may have. We give everyone the opportunity to go trotting and most people will master the rising trot by the end of the tour. For the more experienced riders, going for a canter is sometimes also an option. Of course, for the more laid back riders, you are more than welcome to just take a leisurely stroll all the way to the beach and back.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT A HORSESHOE BAY RANCH EXPERIENCE?

When we get to the beach, the saddles come off and we jump back on bareback for a swim with our horse. This is what makes Horseshoe Bay Ranch unique and different to any other beach ride. You don’t have to have prior experience to do this part of the tour and children as young as 6 can experience this.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT ON THIS TOUR?

Two full hours of horse riding bliss. We first trek through tranquil bushland spotting numerous wallabies, bird life, koalas and our famous blue tiger butterflies as we wind our way down to the far end of Horseshoe Bay. As you get closer to the beach, we advise guests to keep an eye out for our sea eagles which nest along our trails at certain times of the year. The first steps onto the beach alone are magical, but riding into the water on the back of your horse is by far the most breathtaking experience of the whole tour. Saddles come off, as does your helmet, shoes, and even clothes! (Be sure to wear your swimmers underneath!!) Once out of the water we get dressed and back on for a short trek back to the ranch.

Amaroo On Mandalay WHAT IS THE BEST BIT ABOUT AMAROO ON MANDALAY? Amaroo On Mandalay is the ideal location for a wedding as the backdrop is simply stunning. I loved the tranquil, peaceful atmosphere, the lush green gardens with interactive bird-life and the huge colonial style swimming-pool. series of pathways leading you to hidden areas giving your holiday a magical feel with lots to explore. There are a host of activities to enjoy without leaving the grounds, from regular bird-feeding shows where you can meet the local blue winged kookaburras to a quick game of tennis on one of the resort’s two tennis courts.

Bountiful Burdekin

ONE HOUR SOUTH OF TOWNSVILLE AND TWO HOURS NORTH OF THE WHITSUNDAYS IS THE QUIET, SCENIC REGION KNOWN AS THE BURDEKIN, HOME TO TWO MAIN CENTRES, AYR AND HOME HILL. WITH ITS VIBRANT COMMUNITY LIFE, LUSH FARMLAND, MAGNIFICENT WETLANDS AND EXTENSIVE NATURAL PURSUITS LIKE FISHING, BIRDWATCHING AND SCUBA DIVING, THIS LESSER-KNOWN REGION IS WELL-WORTH A VISIT. BROWSE THE AYR NATURE DISPLAY

The Ayr Nature Display was conceived and arranged by Jess and Allan Ey. The display was opened to the public in 1966. The experience begins as you walk past feature walls decorated with North Queensland rocks at the front and the entrance of the display. 9,400 slabs cut with a lapidary saw were used. After traversing the entrance, you will walk into an exceptional display of thousands of specimens housed amazingly in a 4.9 metre by 28.4 metre room. Best Bits: The Ayr Nature Display is Australia’s finest, preserved collection of butterflies, moths, beetles, crustaceans, sea shells, reptiles, rocks, timber, aboriginal stone implements and fossils, especially ammonites, all under one roof See the Well of Butterflies containing 1,220 specimens all collected in the Burdekin district. Marvel at Australia’s largest insects. Specimens of the Hercules moth, the native cockroach (geoscapheus giganteus) and the stick insect, 32cm in length, can be viewed in the display. Admire the variety of Australian shells on display including the dangerous textile cone found along the coastline in North Queensland’s warm, tropical waters. Be amazed by the crab display that consists of more than 400 specimens.

DISCOVER CHARLIE’S HILL

2015 marks 70 years since the Radar Station at Charlie’s Hill ceased operations after World War II. If you visit this historical site, you’ll see igloos of reinforced concrete which provided bomb-proof protection for the radar equipment. The wooden towers which supported the transmitting and receiving aerials have been removed. However, you may find foundations from various structures near the igloos. The buildings are listed in the Queensland Heritage Register because of the site’s historical and military significance. Charlie’s Hill is a six minute drive south of the township of Home Hill.

CHECK OUT THE CO-OPERATIVE MURAL

A large mural depicts elements of rural life in the Burdekin, including cane farms, mango orchards and farmhouses. The mural was painted by Ayr artist Margaret Redweik. The Canecutter mural is a tribute to the men who made their living in the canefields. Before the introduction of mechanical cane harvesters in the 1960s, farmers relied upon gangs of canecutters to get their cane to the mill. Hand canecutting was tough work requiring stamina and great skill with a caneknife.

BOAT RAMPS AND FISHING HOT SPOTS

By far the district’s greatest claim to fame is its fishing. The Burdekin is wellknown for its barramundi, mudcrabs, other estuary species and off-coast reef fishing. The district has one of the highest rates of boat ownership per head of population and many locals have fishing huts at Ocean Creek, Plantation Creek, Groper Creek or Wunjunga. You can launch your boat at one of the boat ramps to chase the elusive barra or try a bit of beach fishing. Council maintains eight boat ramps located within the shire on behalf of Queensland Transport. These boat ramps are located at Cromarty Creek, Barramundi (Morris’s) Creek, Barratta Creek, Ocean Creek, Plantation Creek, Hell Hole, Groper Creek and Wallace Creek.

THINGS TO DO IN THE WHITSUNDAYS

SEE A CROCODILE IN THE WILD WITH A WHITSUNDAY CROCODILE SAFARI Thirty minutes from the bustling tourist hub of Airlie Beach is the Proserpine River, home to the highest concentration of salt water crocodiles in Australia. There are over 150 estuarine crocodiles lurking in the river systems along the Proserpine River. Only one Tour Company is permitted to take you there and that is Whitsunday Crocodile Safari. They offer truly unique, exclusive adventure tours, going deep into the crocodile’s natural habitat and exploring the most densely populated croc infested waters in Australia. There is, however, more to the tour than the thrill of seeing crocodiles in the wild. At its heart, the Crocodile Safari is a nature excursion taking you to the remote estuaries and untouched wetlands of the Proserpine River. The ecosystem is bursting with vibrant, diverse wildlife, from frogs to crocodiles, birdlife to an array of marine animals including the mud crab. Crocodile Safaris only take small, intimate groups so everyone receives personal attention from the friendly crew. They provide lively, informative commentary, educational eco-talks and an interactive show with live mud crabs.

TASTE THE WHITSUNDAY’S GOLD COFFEE BEAN The Whitsundays is home to one of Australia’s largest coffee plantations, Whitsunday Gold Coffee. Their award winning coffee has a velvety smooth texture, full-bodied aroma with a subtle yet rich, bright and lively taste. The plantation and café is located on the Bruce Highway, one minute north of Proserpine and opposite the Airlie Beach/ Shute Harbour Road. There are 140,000 Arabica coffee trees nestled in a rich fertile valley, surrounded by stunning scenery and bordered by the Proserpine River. Call into the café and watch the fully-operational roaster in action. Enjoy the intense aromas of freshly roasted coffee and taste the unique flavor of a Whitsunday Gold Coffee. For passionate coffee lovers, see behind the scenes and delight in an informative, intriguing plantation tour. The 45 minute tour begins with a freshly roasted cup of coffee and a selection of delicious treats. Guests can wander through the rows of lush foliage of Arabica coffee trees, through the wet to dry processing plants and on into the final aromatic stage of roasting.

Whitsunday Jetski Tour guest Travis Poland from Mackay was definitely ‘up close and personal’ with the friendly humpback whale. Image courtesy of Whitsunday Jetski Tours.

A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE! Whitsunday Jetski Tours and their guests were treated to a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience on their Two Island Safari jetski tour enroute to Daydream Island. Tour guides Ian Wilson and Levi Shapendonk had spotted a whale about 1km away and decided to have the guests shut down the jetski engines and enjoy the spectacle from afar. Within 10 minutes the whale was 60 metres from them. By this time the guests were just so excited to think that the whale had come so close to them and within 5 minutes the young male surfaced meters from the jetskis.“We had our tour grouped quite close together and the whale moved from ski to ski for over an hour giving us a show. He was so inquisitive and just didn’t want to leave us alone,” said Ian. Ian has worked with whale populations in different parts of the world, including Tonga, where guests often dive and swim with humpbacks and has been in the Whitsundays working on the water for over six years. “At all times I was aware of the protection of these amazing creatures and respectful of the rules. It’s fantastic that they’re so inquisitive and trusting of us and treating these encounters carefully will surely see many more wonderful interactions during the season. I’ve never experienced anything like this encounter before. It was magical and will go down as one of the highlights of my life on the water.”

GO REMOTE BEACH CAMPING AT THE GLOUCESTER ISLANDS One of the most remote national parks in the Whitsunday region is the Gloucester Islands. They are east of Bowen and north of Airlie Beach and can only be reached by boat. You can catch a commercial or private boat from Shute Harbour at Airlie Beach or Dingo Beach. Once you are there, there is no phone reception or electricity, no town, shops or inhabitants. It is just you, your tent, the silence of the island and the sounds of nature. Camping is allowed at 3 of the islands, Gloucester, Saddleback and Armit Islands. Bona Bay camping area is one of the largest and most popular shaded campgrounds. It has beach views and is on the south-west side of Gloucester Island. The site can hold up to 36 campers, making it suitable for large groups. Saddleback Island campgrounds is on the western side of Saddleback Island and has space for 12 people. There are picnic tables but no other facilities. Armit Island campgrounds is in the south-west corner of Armit Island and has space for 12 totally self-sufficient campers. East Side Bay is suitable for six people and is on the east side of Gloucester Island, between two rocky headlands and adjacent to a seasonal freshwater lagoon. Advanced bookings are required for camping and you will need to pay a minimal National Parks fee as well. Fires are strictly forbidden and so is fishing in some areas. It is best to check the government website before you leave.

.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN CULTURE AT THE HISTORICAL PROSERPINE MUSEUM Visit the Historical Proserpine Museum, where you can learn about the interesting history of this sugar cane and cattle town. The establishment of a permanent museum in the Whitsunday region was a major initiative with strong support throughout the whole community. The facility is a multi-purpose venue, which houses the museum collection and offers the opportunity for genealogical and extensive local history research. It affords educational benefits to locals and visitors alike and it has been embraced as a cultural centre for local arts and crafts, book fairs and travelling exhibitions. The museum bridges the decades since Federation with historical, thought-provoking displays that showcase the most significant achievements of the region during the last century.

This quaint, rural cinema was constructed in 1948 at Queens Beach, close to Bowen. Back in the 1940’s it was called the Summergarden Theatre and for the first few years of operation it didn’t have a licence or even a roof! They used timber poles and tarpaulins to shelter the audience from the rain. In the 1950’s, a permanent roof was constructed and the cinema quickly became a cultural staple of Bowen community life. It is still a muchloved iconic landmark to this day. There are two screens, the larger seats 275 people and is equipped with the latest in technology. The second cinema was built in 1995 and seats 86 people in a modern and comfortable setting. A trip to Bowen Cinema is more than just watching a movie, it is a trip into the past and the gooey nostalgia of yesteryear. The cinema shows a variety of blockbusters, family films and Hollywood classics. Check out bowencinemas.com for full details.

Things to do

DRIVE YOURSELF AROUND THE BEAUTIFUL WHITSUNDAYS ISLANDS WITH BOAB BOATS Why go at everyone else’s pace when you can hire a boat and drive yourself around the islands? Boab Boats have a variety of vessels available for hire. There is the Sports Rider which is 5.7m in length and takes up to 6 people. The Sports Rider gives you total freedom and can go to all islands including Whitehaven Beach. This vessel is a nice family cruising boat. They also have Centre Cabs which take up 7 people, again giving you access to all the islands. This is the best boat to choose for fishing because the driving consul is in the centre, allowing you to walk all round boat when you need to pull in that big fish. For smaller groups, try the Kakadu tinny. This is 4.3m in length and takes up to 4 people. On a calm day it can get out to South Molle Island and Long Island plus all along the Airlie foreshore. This is also a good boat for river cruising and going out to the Proserpine damn. All other boats can also be taken to the damn for use. Boab Boats offer two packages. There is a walk-on walk-off price where they get the boat into the water for you. Alternatively, for a lower price, you can book the tow-away package where you can drive down to the ramp yourself. With this package you can pick the boat up the night before so you can pre-pack. All you need to hire a boat is a valid boat license. International licences are also valid. New to the fleet are two jet-skis and all you need is a pwc license, then you are free to jet around the Whitsundays at high speed.

ESCAPE THE CROWDS AT CANNONVALE BEACH Just to the west of the tourist hot spot of Airlie Beach you’ll find its quieter, lesser known, but just as beautiful cousin, Cannonvale Beach. To get there follow the picturesque bicentennial boardwalk from Airlie Beach. Cannonvale Beach is in a beautiful sheltered bay, perfect for splashing about with the kids away from the big crowds. There are children’s play areas, public barbecues and picnic spots along the water and at the end of the beach you’ll find a curious molten rock formation begging to be explored, with rock pools to be combed over at low tide. While you are there, make sure you call into the vibrant Fat Frog Café. It is open for breakfast and lunch and offers stunning views across the bay. Dogs are welcome to sit with you outside at this café and there is a children’s play area inside plus a thoughtfully designed kids menu to make life easy for mums and dads. Everything is made fresh on site and the menu is healthy, yet sumptuous. If you are looking to unwind and need a little pampering, it is easy to find Intuitive Massage, just at the end of the street. They offer a wide range of health and beauty treatments, massages, facials, waxing and much more. Images courtesy Tourism & Events QLD

A Tale of the Mud Crab & Mojito At the top end of Shute Harbour Road (near Port of Airlie) you can’t miss the landmark location that is home to the award winning seafood restaurant Fish D’vine and Australia’s original Rum Bar. At Fish D’vine you can experience the best seafood the Great Barrier Reef and North Queensland has to offer. An Airlie Beach institution and a favourite with both locals and visitors alike the owners and team are passionate about the experience they provide when you visit. Simply authentic. Fish D’vine are a true North Queensland experience, rather than a Sydney or Melbourne restaurant transplanted in the North. Local produce with all the natural laid back charm that encapsulates our locals and makes the Whitsundays such an iconic part of the Great Barrier Reef. The two most loved experiences in the restaurant are the Mud Crab and the world famous Mojitos... Manager of the Rum Bar Mark Wyatt aka Dr Rum is now the National Rum Ambassador for Australia, his knowledge and passion of the drink of the sailors and the spirit of the sugar cane fields has seen Dr Rum break away

Down Under Bar Every night is a bargain at Down Under Bar and Grill! Meal deals range from pizza to chicken wings, burgers and much more. If you are looking for an affordable, quality meal this is the best place in town. Down Under Bar is located at the top end of the main street, perfectly positioned, only a short walk from the famous Airlie Beach lagoon.

What did you have for dinner? I chose the fillet of salmon with sweet potato chips. All this and a glass of chilled white wine for just $15, an amazing price for such a quality meal. The salmon was cooked to perfection and had a delicious homemade capsicum aioli with crunchy

from just standard service to also providing ‘Rum Journeys’ everything from day time private events to intimate sit down tastings where you select amazing rums and hear stories and history from around the world. Even if you ‘think’ you don’t like Rum, at the Rum Bar they guarantee they can create a cocktail or spirit mix that you’ll love. As for the mud crab Fish D’vine have spent years mastering their own d’vine recipe for Chilli Mud Crab. When ordering you choose how it’s cooked - Chilli Crab, wok tossed in our famous Thai curry sauce served with steamed jasmine rice, Singapore Pepper Crab, wok tossed in a spicy cracked black pepper & butter sauce, served with steamed rice or a natural, fresh crab served chilled w/ crusty bread and butter, house made cocktail sauce. YUM! So what are you waiting for, when visiting Airlie Beach you have to experience Fish D’vine.

sweet potato fries on the side. I was pleased to see it was also a big portion and I felt very satisfied. My friend decided upon the homemade vegetable lasagna with Greek salad, which she said was divine. We were both amazed by the incredible value for money.

What is Down Under Bar and Grill like? It has a down to earth, friendly vibe with indoor and outdoor seating. The venue is great for large groups that can all sit round one of their massive dining tables. The al fresco dining area looks out onto the lively main-street and upbeat music plays all day long. Down Under Bar also do yummy recovery breakfasts and extend their meals deals to lunch-time too. In the evening, after dinner service, there is more of a party atmosphere. They have resident DJ’s and party games well into the night. During the day and early evening, however, Down Under Bar is a great place for families looking for an easy, affordable lunch and dinner. There is plenty on the menu for kids to enjoy.

Anchor Bar Why choose to eat at Anchor Bar? For me, Anchor Bar has it all! It is a short two minute walk from the main street of Airlie Beach and has spectacular views right across the bay and out to sea. We chose to sit outside by the pool and arrived at sunset with beautiful red and orange colours cascading across the winter sky. My husband enjoyed watching the boats come and go across the bay and, together, we enjoyed listening to a fabulous two piece band that sung our favourite classics.

PRESENTS

What did you eat? I selected the haloumi, beetroot and candied walnut salad and it was delicious! The candied walnuts popped in my mouth and the taste sensation was amazing! My husband had a pulled pork burger and the succulent juices were so good he mopped them up with his chips. The service at the bar was warm and friendly, the food was delivered straight to our table and we enjoyed a romantic evening in candle-light with great wine.

What was so special about the Anchor Bar experience? The atmosphere. As soon as you arrive you feel a chilled Airlie Beach vibe. The bar is decorated with a beachy theme and has lots of quirky art pieces that caught my attention. We were pleased to discover that any guest has full use of all facilities, including the swimming-pool and pool table which is free. The view is also too special not to mention. We couldn’t find anywhere in Airlie Beach with a view as good as Anchor Bar.

WEDS - SUN 6PM till LATE CRAFT BEER, WINES & COCKTAILS AVAILABLE FOR FUNCTIONS OR EVENTS

Would you recommend Anchor Bar to a friend? Yes, of course! There were several more items on the menu I wanted to try. From the steamed mussels to creamy pasta, freshly shucked oysters to locally caught Mackerel. We also noticed they had platters on the menu, so it would be a great place to visit with a group of friends.

Meet your friendly Cruise Director from Cruise Whitsunday CORAL DOYLE

HELLO, MY NAME IS CORAL DOYLE, I AM 26 YEARS OLD AND I HAVE WORKED FOR CRUISE WHITSUNDAY FOR TWO AND HALF YEARS. I AM FROM AIRLIE BEACH AND I WILL BE YOUR FRIENDLY CRUISE DIRECTOR. WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR TOUR? I work on the Great Barrier Reef tour and the best part of the tour for me is seeing all our guests’ reactions to the reef. It’s a mixture of awe, excitement and joy. It makes me realise how lucky I am to work where I do!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? I love what I do. I don’t think there is one particular thing I love the most. Of course I love the Great Barrier Reef and I enjoy meeting our guests from all around the world. I like having to improvise and think outside the square to get the job done as sometimes not everything goes to plan! And, of course, I love the crew I work with.

WHAT WILL PEOPLE LEARN ON YOUR TOUR? Our guests learn all about the reef and the creatures that live there. We have a marine biology area on board Seaflight, reef interpreters on our Semi-sub tour and, if you come up to say hi to the Captain, you might just be able to help him drive the boat.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT A CRUISE WHITSUNDAYS EXPERIENCE?

get involved with everything or you can sit back and relax and enjoy the scenery. It’s really up to you. I may be biased, but I think Seaflights’ crew make the day as well. We love what we do and enjoy showing you our office.

WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM THE TOUR: We leave Port of Airlie at 8am for Hamilton Island where we pick up more guests. From here it’s straight out to the reef. It’s a 2hr journey from Hamo but we have lots going on, morning tea, extra activities sign up, snorkel briefs, dive briefs etc. At the moment we are also keeping a close eye out for the humpback whales. Before you know it we’re at the reef. Ready to jump in for a snorkel, explore the reef on a submarine, have a massage, go for a dive and of course enjoy our yummy buffet. We have around 4hrs at Reefworld before it’s all aboard for the trip home. A lot of people are knackered from a big day out there and sleep, but there is still lots going on. Kids activities, dive debriefs, afternoon tea and, of course, more whales. We are back at Hamilton at 5pm and Port of Airlie at 6pm where all the crew line up on the dock to say goodbye.

I think what makes us special is that although we can carry large numbers of people, our Great Barrier Reef tour is very personalized. You can do as much as you want and

It is an authentic experience on a 90ft real timber tall-ship, handcrafted in the 1940’s with Tasmanian timber and made by a famous Tasmanian shipwright. As soon as you are on-board you can sense the history of the vessel. The set-up of the whole tour is dedicated to its passengers, you can learn how to hoist the sales, listen to engaging eco talks and sit in a shaded area of the deck with no other sound than the gentle lapping of the water as the vessel sails gently guide you forward. It is simply majestic!

WHERE DOES THE TOUR GO? With Derwent Hunter you can get away from the crowds. The experienced crew show you the little known areas of the Whitsunday, un-touched natural beauty that takes your breath away. The tour crosses the Whitsunday Passage and heads north taking you to Bali Hai for a snorkel on the stunning fringing reef before dropping you at Langford Spit, a long sand-spit that has 360 degree views and makes you feel like you are standing on water.

26 56

It gets back to the true nature of a genuine sailing experience. It is about the voyage and the simple beauty of the Whitsunday Islands not just Whitehaven Beach. The feeling of serenity as you sail on a classic sailing vessel with no motor, just sail power, is truly special. Add to this the friendly nature of all the crew on-board plus the informative eco talks then you a tour made in heaven.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TOUR? A lesson in how to hoist the sales, a description of the history of the vessel plus an eco-tour to nourish the mind as well as the soul. A 2 hour snorkeling/beach time experience, where guests are tendered to shore to snorkel directly form the beach making it great for all ages and abilities. Morning tea and a delicious buffet lunch is included, so is all your snorkel equipment and stinger suit hire. There is also a licensed bar onboard so you can enjoy a glass of wine or ice cold beer with the complementary cheese and fruit platter on your way back to port. Ask about the Chill and Thrill package which gives you an exclusive two day-trips for one set price. Spend one day on a fast thrill ride to Whitehaven Beach with Ocean rafting and a second day on Derwent Hunter exploring the lesser known areas in serenity.

Mantaray Whitehaven Beach

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS TOUR?

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TOUR?

I researched all the different day trips available in the Whitsundays and this is the only day tour that offers scuba diving and takes you to Whitehaven Beach on the same day. We were looking for a tour that suited both myself and my girlfriend. I am a certified diver and she is a beginner looking to try scuba diving for the first time. We discovered Mantaray Charters offers scuba diving for all levels of experience so it seemed like the perfect tour for us.

Mantaray charters is not just for divers, they provide snorkeling equipment and a snorkeling tour as well. We were given wet suits which protected us from the cold and gave us peace of mind about the stingers. We received great snacks all day and a buffet lunch with seafood, marinated mussels, chicken, cold meats, a variety of salads, wraps and rolls. Courtesy transfers are also included and the shuttle bus will pick up anywhere from Shute Harbour to Cannonvale.

WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR?

WHAT MAKES THIS TOUR SO SPECIAL?

Scuba diving of course! All the crew are qualified dive instructors so they came with a wealth of knowledge about the reef, the best dive spots and scuba diving safety which allowed my girlfriend to feel relaxed. We went to Luncheon Bay and the crew split us up into two groups. The certified divers and the beginners. This meant we could go at our own pace and the crew catered for our individual skill level. I was able to explore further afield and my girlfriend could go at a steady pace. I was impressed with how the instructor looked after her and the rest of the beginners so they felt safe.

Being able to scuba dive and experience Whitehaven Beach in the same day. Mantaray Charters take you to Hill Inlet so guests can enjoy a bush walk up to the spectacular look-out where all the famous photos are taken. We could see the white swirling sands and our guide offered to take our photo for us. We were then taken down to the beach itself and left to explore the silky shore, taking more photos and watching the lemon sharks navigate the shallow waters.

The marine life at Luncheon Bay was spectacular and we were told it was one of the best sites in the Whitsundays. During the dive we were lucky enough to meet George, the resident Maori Wrasse. Diving deeper, we saw a giant trevally and even a turtle which was majestic. We were also told that sometimes divers are lucky enough to see Mmantarays.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND? Yes, with absolute confidence! The crew are all professional and passionate about the tour and the reef. The eco talks were inspiring, the dives were spectacular, the lunch, delicious, and Whitehaven Beach, better than any of the postcards!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY AT TOSCANA? We are a family with two young children and Toscana is a family orientated resort with spacious apartments, well-equipped for self-catering. As the name donates, Toscana has a pretty, Tuscany inspired garden setting with four swimming-pools. There is a toddlers bubbling wading pool, a toddler’s cubby house and sandpit to keep the little ones occupied, cascading waterfalls and a small plunge pool as well as a BBQ area for family and friends to meet over lunch.

WHAT ARE THE APARTMENTS LIKE? When we arrived we were excited to see how large and spacious our apartment was. As soon as we stepped into the lounge-room the stunning panoramic turquoise sea came into view. The elevated location of Toscana means every room has verandah seating with views over the bay and out to the Coral Sea. The small white yachts were twinkling and the large expanse of bright blue sea was mesmerizing. We instantly felt like we were on holiday. The facilities in our apartment were first class. We had a fully equipped kitchen which meant we didn’t have to eat out every night. We had laundry facilities, so we could

keep up with the kids washing, and a comfortable lounge with a large flat screen T.V. to relax at the end of the day.

WHERE IS TOSCANA LOCATED? Toscana is in an elevated position with great views, yet still just 200m from Airlie Beach Main Street. A two minute walk would take us to the lively main stretch with a wide variety of restaurants and ice creameries to choose from. When the kids got tired, we could even choose to catch a quick taxi up the hill back to our apartment. Toscana is also a short taxi or a ten minute walk from both marinas, where all the charter boats leave to explore the Whitsunday Islands. It was such a convenient, central location perfect for our little family.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TOSCANA TO A FRIEND? Yes, we are even thinking about bringing our extended family next year! We have a family 70th birthday celebration and we plan to utilize Toscana’s wonderful intimate function room overlooking the bay. Jo can organize everything including decorations, catering, appropriate family games and prizes. We can enjoy the family celebration without any of the hassle. Really looking forward to that!

Peninsula Airlie Beach WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY AT PENINSULA?

WHAT WAS SO SPECIAL ABOUT PENINSULA?

We were a group of friends meeting for our ten year reunion and we wanted the best that Airlie Beach could offer! At Peninsula, we could book a one, two, three or four bedroom five star luxury apartment with uninterrupted views over Abell Point Marina and out over the azure blue waters of the Coral Sea. We decided upon the four bedroom apartment as that size suited our group best and the location was ideal.

First, the location. As the name donates it is situated on a peninsular, jutting out into the turquoise sea and giving us some of the best views in Airlie Beach. The feeling of privacy and seclusion created a relaxing atmosphere and gave us the freedom to bond together, creating more memories to last a life-time.

We were a short stroll along the coast-hugging boardwalk to Airlie Beach restaurants and right on the door-step of the marina where we departed for some amazing day trips to the Whitsunday Islands.

WHAT WAS YOUR APARTMENT LIKE? It was total five star luxury and at an affordable price. The apartments are privately owned and ours had unique, classical décor which you could tell had been selected by the owners and gave it a nice, homely feel.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND PENINSULA TO YOUR FRIENDS? Yes, we are already planning to book again because we had so much fun! The luxury five star apartments are great for groups of friends but would also be ideal for families. We felt very welcome at reception and they were happy to help with tour advice and any other questions we had. When it came time to leave, we didn’t want to go. We felt extremely at home and didn’t want our holiday to end!

The location of our apartment was out of this world! The verandah opened out onto majestic sea views. It was totally private and secluded, far away from other tourists and it felt like our own little oasis. The apartment itself had four deluxe rooms with three en suites. As the organisers, my husband and I enjoyed the mezzanine en suite room with stunning views out to sea. We had a fully equipped kitchen which meant we had lively dinner parties and intimate conversations reminiscing about our past. The apartment also had a lounge area with flat-screen T.V. so we were able to enjoy a few cosy nights in too!

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF CAPE GLOUCESTER RESORT?

WHERE IS IT LOCATED? Cape G is located at the end of one of the best scenic drives that locals recommend to visiting friends and family. This is where we go on our weekends folk so, if it’s not on your list, a visit to Cape Gloucester should be! Located 40 minutes north of Airlie Beach, follow the map to Hydeaway Bay and take the dirt road to the resort entrance.

WHY CHOOSE THIS ACCOMMODATION? The Whitsundays has such a variety of accommodation experiences on offer, staying beach front should be on your bucket list while visiting the region. Our magical sunrises

WHAT DID IT COST AND WHAT DID IT INCLUDE? I stayed one night in the 2 Bedroom Beachfront Cabin ($260 per night - midweek rate for four people). Every moment I was in the cabin I mentally started planning when I’d be able to come back for an entire week. They just have this Robinson Crusoe vibe as you face the ocean in what feels like a deserted paradise, yet on the interior they feature all of the mod cons you need to settle in for a private holiday.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO A FRIEND? I constantly recommend Cape Gloucester to friends. If you don’t have a night to spare, head out to the resort for a day trip. T hey often have live music on weekends and the atmosphere is brilliant... BUT draw straws on who is the designated driver as I guarantee once you arrive you won’t want to leave!

Cape Gloucester will leave you speechless. I’ve been coming to this beach front resort since the original opening (at least 10 years ago) and it’s simply beautiful to stay in it now that’s it’s all grown up. The gardens have found their roots, the cabins and wallless restaurant ‘The Oar’ have settled into their environment, the native wildlife loves making friends and the resort has found it’s target market!

DROP A FISHING LINE FROM THE BLUEWATER TRAIL, BRIDGE STREET AND RIVER STREET With more than 20km of trail to choose from, the Bluewater Trail is a walking and cycling path connecting popular Mackay destinations. SCUBA DIVE WITH A PLATYPUS Finch Hatton Gorge is the only place in the world where you can scuba dive in the same water as a platypus in its natural environment. See a range of unique marine life, including turtles, in the rainforest water. The best place to see a platypus in the wild is in the depths of Eungella National Park at Broken River. It takes little over an hour to reach Broken River from Mackay. The best time of day to see a platypus is during dawn or dusk, as this is when they become active to look for food.

FLY THROUGH THE FOREST ON A ZIPLINE FINCH HATTON GORGE Get a tree-top view of the rainforest in Finch Hatton Gorge as you glide along a zipwire, 25 metres above ground. Not only an exhilarating adventure experience for the whole family, but also educational, as you learn about the delicate habitat of Eungella National Park.

WATCH A SUNRISE WITH WALLABIES AT CAPE HILLSBOROUGH An epic photographic opportunity awaits on the beach at Cape Hillsborough. As the sun rises, wallabies can be seen bounding across the sand. Click photos and treasure the moment, but don’t attempt to touch or feed the wildlife.

SWIM IN A ROCK POOL Take a refreshing swim in one of the many clear rock pools found in the rainforest at Finch Hatton Gorge, as water cascades over and around large boulders upstream.
