HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO PERMANENTLY LIVE IN YOUR HOLIDAY HOME?

MAKE THE MAGIC OF THE RAINFOREST PART OF EVERY DAY Magnificent rainforest, outstanding tourist attractions and the incredible wealth of native wildlife are just some of the things that bring thousands of visitors to the Cairns region every year. These can be part of your everyday life, when you live at eco@jumrum. This extraordinary residential enclave tucked away in the hinterland at Kuranda lets you experience the ideal combination of eco-conscious living and pure creature comforts.

eco@jumrum’s generous sized lots, ranging from 3005m2 to 6894m2 gives you the space to build the home of your dreams, put in a pool, grow a vegetable garden and afford the kids plenty of room to explore. SURROUNDED BY THE GLORY OF NATURE The estate’s masterplan has included thoughtful covenants to protect both the old growth rainforest remnants and areas of regenerating rainforest, with part of each block also designated as a natural vegetation zone. This means the glorious view you can plan on having from the back verandah is never lost and will only improve over time. You will also be the envy of visiting family and friends, when they see the kind of nature walks you can take right in your very own neighbourhood. Imagine waking to the calls of birds each morning in the cool of the sunrise, or watching native animals coming down to drink from the creek. Many of these outstanding blocks have their own creek frontage, adding to the natural symphony, the music of trickling water and cooling breezes.

YOUR DREAM, YOUR CHOICE Each site’s maximum building envelope of 2000m2 gives you the ability to design a home that meets your needs now, or has flexibility for future goals. This might include pavilion style dwellings, with room for guests, or even a bed and breakfast business. It really is your own, personal patch of paradise. A HAVEN THAT’S EXCEPTIONALLY CONVENIENT The thriving cosmopolitan village of Kuranda is just minutes away, with its artisans and craft shops, groceries, professional services, Café culture, restaurants and pubs. Right Situated across the road from eco@jumrum, is the Kuranda Recreation Centre for sporting activities and a local social life. You’re also only 30 minutes away drive from the employment hub of Cairns, with its International Airport and you’re within easy day tripping distance of the Atherton Tablelands, Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree and all the other attractions that make the FNQ region a world-renowned and desirable destination.

WHITSUNDAYS

26TH FEBRUARY 2016

12TH MARCH 2016

25TH – 28TH MARCH 2016

Everybody’s favourite randomist is back and as always he has a lot of stuff backing up in his head and It’s time to let it all out. Come and be part of this truly unique stand up experience. Join him as audience and performer come together for a massive Brain dump. With an on-stage presence like no other, his exuberance, spontaneity and cerebral style have established him as one of the world’s best-loved comedians. Freewheeling and off the cuff, join the master surrealist as he uses an infinite imagination and plenty of tomfoolery in a night not to be missed.

After wowing the world, retired opera singers Reggie, Cissy and Wilf have been put out to pasture in a country retirement home.Their chief concerns are scatty Cissy’s wandering memory, flirty Wilf’s obsession with dirty talk and gentleman Reggie’s ongoing battle to get bloody marmalade with breakfast.

It’s all happening at Cape Gloucester this Easter!

Please note: Recommended 15+

What keeps the trio raging against the dying of the light is headlining the annual gala concert marking composer Verdi’s birthday. The serenity of their rehearsal room is shattered by the arrival of Jean: diva, celebrated soprano, fourth member of their quartet and Reggie’s ex-wife. Not that he’s thought about their horribly dysfunctional marriage in years, of course. Can these four put aside old grudges and re-team for one more showstopping finale?

Jump in the car and head on out to Cape Gloucester this Easter holidays. Perfectly suited to families, groups or even a romantic weekend escape. Stroll along the beach, swim in the ocean or take a dip in the 25m outdoor pool and tantalise your taste buds in the famous beachside restaurant. Open all weekend for lunch 12 to 3pm and Dinner 6 to 8pm. Live music Sunday 27th from 1pm BOOK NOW! Restaurant and Accommodation – Bookings Essential Amazing specials on offer all weekend.

Quartet, also adapted as an acclaimed 2012 film, is a devilishly funny journey into old age told with tenderness, grace, hope and, above all, no self pity.

TROPICAL PARADISE

STOP AND SOAK UP THE SERENITY OF ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST TRANQUIL TROPICAL DESTINATIONS. As the halfway point in-between Townsville and Cairns, take the opportunity to meander barefoot along one of Mission Beach’s pristine shorelines, where the rainforest fringes the glimmering turquoise tide. Sound’s magical? This is only the start of why Mission Beach should be on your travel itinerary. Mission Beach is one of the few places along the Queensland coast where two World Heritage areas meet, the Wet Tropics rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. This stretch of paradise is also one of the closest mainland destinations to the Great Barrier Reef, only 38km away. Visitors wanting a unique diving or snorkelling experience are in luck, as it only takes an hour to reach some of the reef’s most beautiful and unique coral, meaning more time in the water viewing nature at its finest and less time on a boat. 14km of tropical sandy beaches line the four rustic villages which collectively make up Mission Beach. The villages of Bingil Bay, Mission Beach, Wongaling

Beach and South Mission Beach each add their own unique vibe to this relaxed community. The village of Mission Beach is a great place to start your holiday. Stroll the eclectic array of gift stores and art galleries, then familiarize yourself with some of the town’s popular eateries, from cafes to bars and gourmet restaurants. Don’t let the relaxed ambience and casual way of life fool you, hiding among the villages are some of the best seafood delicacies and resort luxuries on the Queensland coast. Alongside breathtaking scenery, Mission Beach is home to unique and endangered wildlife. The Southern Cassowary is one of the most extraordinary looking large birds in the world, and the rainforest surrounding Mission Beach is where the majority of them reside. If you’re lucky, you may see one walking through bush or even through the grounds of your accommodation, though weighing on average 60kg, it’s advisable never to approach them.

Experience somewhere new, make it your mission!

You may find that you’re rather content laying beachside with a cool beverage in hand, but if you’re looking to fill your days with discovery and adventure, you’ve come to the right place! Express trips to the Great Barrier Reef can have you from coast to coral in only 45 minutes! In fact a plethora of water-based charters and activities are available. Deep sea charters can take you to the outer reef for a day of fishing or a day of diving. Experience white water rafting in the Tully Gorge, or paddle your way from beach to beach on a kayak. Go on an invigorating crocodile and wildlife tour, or walk above rainforest canopy on a Skywalk. Accelerate your adrenalin with a skydive or satisfy your sweet tooth with a cocoa bean to chocolate bar experience at a chocolate factory.

Offshore from Mission Beach are the tropical Family Group of islands including Dunk and Bedarra islands. Explore the walking tracks and unique tropical rainforest environment of Dunk Island by jumping aboard a water taxi. Operating daily, the Mission Beach Dunk Island Water Taxi is a quick ten minute ride in a fully enclosed vessel. Head south is Australia’s largest national park island, Hinchinbrook Island. Wander wilderness trails, drop a line in the water or take a picnic to a pristine island beach. Explore the nearby countryside by car and discover breathtaking waterfalls, tropical fruit stands, wineries and heritage attractions. Mission Beach is about feeling great. Participate in an art or yoga class, enjoy fresh tropical fruits and produce and discover local delicacies at an artesian market. Breathe in the sweet beachside air and let yourself unwind.

Kuranda

AND WORLD HERITAGE RAINFOREST

SMALL IN SIZE BUT LARGE IN STATURE, THE VIBRANT ARTESIAN VILLAGE OF KURANDA IS A MUST-VISIT DESTINATION. SPECTACULAR RAINFOREST SCENERY, BUSTLING ART AND CRAFT MARKETS, WONDROUS WILDLIFE ATTRACTIONS AND TEMPTING CUISINE FOR THE TASTE BUDS; A TRIP TO KURANDA IS A FEAST FOR ALL SENSES. THERE IS SO MUCH TO SEE AND DO IN THIS MOUNTAIN-TOP PARADISE THAT ONE DAY IS NOT NEARLY ENOUGH TO EXPERIENCE IT ALL, HOWEVER IF ONE DAY IS ALL YOU HAVE, YOU’RE IN FOR A DAY-TRIPPING TREAT. HOW TO GET THERE

DISCOVER KURANDA

Getting to Kuranda is an exhilarating experience in itself. Self-drive a twisting mountain road past the thick jungle of World Heritage forest and rocky waterfalls. Discover incredible panoramas looking back toward Cairns and the Coral Sea, then stop to see the mighty Barron Falls roar, most spectacular during the wet season.

The village that Kuranda has become today was originally shaped in the 1970’s, with the arrival of those who seeked an alternative and natural lifestyle. A number of hippy communes developed, and the village gained a reputation as an artesian destination. The same ideals exist now, making the heritage markets one of the most unique and genuine shopping destinations in Queensland. There is an abundance of art and craft to view along the village’s main street as well as boutique retailers and exquisite food producers.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is the ultimate introduction to the World Heritage tropical rainforest and an experience to cherish for a lifetime. Glide above the rainforest canopy in a gondola before descending through canopy layers at two mid-rainforest stops on the way to Kuranda, giving the opportunity to walk through the rainforest and view the Barron Falls. Or for a nostalgic step backward in time, travel in restored rail cars with the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Rising from sea level to 328m, the journey to Kuranda passes spectacular waterfalls, so close you can almost touch them and into the stunning Barron Gorge. Packages are available which include both the Scenic Railway and the Skyrail to experience the best of both worlds.

26

After strolling up the main street you will be greeted with a host of nature parks. The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is the largest butterfly light aviary and exhibit in the Southern Hemisphere! Become enchanted by the aerial dynamics of a kaleidoscope of fluttering butterflies as you meander through pretty rainforest gardens. Near the butterfly sanctuary is Birdworld Kuranda, where an array of colourful birds fly around you in a rainforest simulated enclosure. View more of Australia’s favourite fauna at the Kuranda Koala Gardens to see freshwater crocodiles, fluffy wombats and cuddly koalas. This

Visiting Kuranda feels like an invitation to explore Queensland ’s best-kept secret... Discover the village in the rainforest for yourself.

is one of the only places in the country where you can physically touch and interact with the koalas, watching them in their natural rainforest environment. For the chance to see Kuranda’s ancient rainforest in its natural heart, hop on board a riverboat cruise. This 45 minute journey is a relaxing way to learn about the rainforest’s ecosystem, with a chance to see freshwater crocodiles, fish and turtles in the wild. Five minutes from Kuranda is the incredible Rainforestation Nature Park, an allencompassing nature, wildlife and indigenous experience. View more than 40 exotic fruit specimens in the orchard then learn about the rainforest’s unique flora and fauna aboard an amphibious World War II Army Duck.

STAY A BIT LONGER After the last train and gondola have departed and sunset falls, the hustle and bustle turns into serene tranquility. It’s easy to see why early inhabitants of the town fell in love with the solitude and peacefulness. Listen to the breeze rustle the rainforest canopy from a rainforest retreat, or stay at the famous hotel in town for hearty food and laughter. SKYRAIL RAINFOREST CABLEWAY

River rafting, indigenous tours, relaxation therapy, fortunetelling and fascinating museums; there is an abundance of discovery and adventure to be found among the village in the rainforest.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway spans 7.5 kms over World Heritage listed tropical rainforest and is the best way to experience this ancient environment. The 6 seater gondolas glide just metres above the rainforest canopy, allowing you to be part of the most botanically diverse eco system on earth. Prepare for a fascinating rainforest experience where you can see, hear, smell and immerse yourself in the environment. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway has been voted Australia’s best major tourist attraction. The iconic, multi-award winning tour is also a world-leader in eco-tourism. There are two stations along the way - Red Peak and Barron Falls, where you can explore the forest floor with a complimentary Skyrail Ranger guided tour and check out three scenic lookouts as well as the educational Skyrail/CSIRO Rainforest Interpretation Centre. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is open 7 days a week from 9am – 5.15pm. A oneway experience takes about 90 minutes and a return option is 2 ½ hours.

Wombats

Cute, cuddly and native to Australia, the wombat is a timid marsupial not often seen in its natural habitat. In the wild, wombats are primarily nocturnal, meaning they are most active during the evening. But this isn’t the only reason they are rarely seen. Stout and muscular, wombats are born to dig. The talented tunnelers carve intricate burrows underground, ranging in length anywhere from three metres to 30, and can have multiple burrows. The main burrows are sometimes shared between wombats with one using each burrow at a time, with a sleeping chamber housing a nest made of grass and leaves. They have the distinction of being the world’s largest burrowing animal. For these reasons, wombats weren’t noticed by European settlers for at least 10 years after their arrival to Australia. A wombat can travel up to three kilometres during an evening in search of food, but will have other burrows near in case of danger. Shorter burrows are commonly used by wombats as escape tunnels when predators are nearby. DID YOU KNOW? The rump of a wombat is covered by a tough, thick skin. If threatened by a dingo, a wombat will dive into a nearby burrow, using its rump as protection from the teeth of the dingo. The wombat is also capable of crushing the dingo’s skull against the burrow roof. There are three species of wombat: the Common wombat or Bare-nosed wombat; the Southern Hairy-nosed wombat and the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat. DID YOU KNOW? Queensland’s only wombat, the Northern Hairy-nosed wombat, is critically endangered and one of Australia’s rarest marsupials. The species is only found in one location in the wild, the Epping Forest National Park, west of Clermont in Central Queensland. A 20km predator fence protects these wombats against dingoes. Billabong Sanctuary has on display, the Common and the Southern Hairy-nosed wombats. Two of the Billabong’s most loved animals are wombats Tonka and Yala who come out twice a day for a pat and cuddle. Visitors have the opportunity to hold either Tonka or Yala for a souvenir photo. Due to their rarity, and the fact they are extremely hard to find in the wild, many visitors come to Billabong Sanctuary specifically to hold a wombat, as they are often a favourite out of all the marsupials. Wombats are marsupials because they carry their young in pouches the same way that kangaroos and koalas do. DID YOU KNOW? The female wombat’s pouch opens backward to prevent dirt entering while she is burrowing. Cute and cuddly, the wombat’s nearest relative is the koala. The koala and the wombat are Australia’s two most endearing animals, and at Billabong Sanctuary, visitors have the opportunity to hold and cuddle both. Feed a croc, cuddle a koala, pet a kangaroo and hold a wombat. Get up close and personal with your favourite native Australian animal, at Billabong Sanctuary.

DID YOU KNOW –The rump of a wombat is covered by a tough, thick skin!

Billabong Sanctuary Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and, to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please and, as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m. At wildlife encounters, you can hold a koala or hug a wombat and have a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile. Wildlife talks and interpretative experiences feature all day. Don’t miss the most popular feeding show, where the sanctuary’s largest crocodile, Bully, will leap from the water in an amazing show of strength to take a snap at his lunch. Hear the tremendous jaws snap shut as Bully lunges for food, fed by one of the experienced rangers. Bully is 4.5m long and weighs in excess of 500kgs. To see him in action is an unforgettable nature experience. Take the opportunity to feed one of the snappy freshwater crocodiles, only $10 to experience the action. At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform you on many misconceptions people may have about different animals. One of the most misunderstood native animals in Australia is the dingo. See a different side to this magnificent creature and then pose for a photo and pat the friendly dingoes. Summer is the season when estuarine crocodiles are at their most impressive. It is nesting time, with courtship displays amongst the Billabong’s breeding crocodiles, and also when the crocodile are most active at the feeding shows. At the talks you will learn how to stay safe when visiting North Qld Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

Magnetic Island is 8 km of shore from Townsville, a quick 20 minute journey by ferry. The island is 52km2, of which 70% is national park. It is a stunning natural paradise with a relaxing tropical lifestyle. Just over 2000 people live on the island all year round and they are welcoming to everyone, always happy to stop and have a chat.

HISTORY

GETTING AROUND

Magnetic Island is called Yunbenun by the Wulgurukaba people who are the Traditional Aboriginal Owners of the island and lived there for thousands of years. In 1770, Captain James Cook sailed passed on his ship, the Endeavour, and, while he was there, his compass was affected by a strange magnetic force on the island which is why it is now called ‘Magnetic Island’.

The wonderfully winding scenic roads are great fun to drive on and the best way to explore the island. Each bend reveals a different jaw-dropping bay or landscape to marvel at and it is all you can do to concentrate on the road ahead. Most places are suitable for any vehicle, however, there are a couple of 4 wheel drive only tracks, one to Radical Bay which is stunning. The Topless Car Company rent our bright pink topless cars which are a fun and unique way of exploring the island, with the wind rushing through your hair, open-air seats giving you a real taste of the island.

GEOGRAPHY Magnetic Island was part of the Australian mainland until 7500 years ago when sea levels rose cutting it off. Magnetic Island is composed mostly of granite, the result of a volcanic force that pushed molten rock up to the earth’s surface 275 million years ago. Much of the volcanic rock has eroded away, however, the underlying granite has decomposed into fault lines and created the distinctive granite boulders and rocky headlands we see today. The island is famed for its untouched natural beauty. There are 23 bays and beaches, some of which are only accessible by foot or boat. Mount Cook is the highest point on the island and it is fringed by magnificently tangled rainforest jungle, vine forests, eucalypt woods and emerald green hoop pine trees.

There is no other place quite like it on the island. The resort is truly a great place to unwind and relax. Spacious and roomy, Amaroo On Mandalay is also an affordable family get away, with plenty of room to run around.

FOLLOW A SNORKEL TRAIL

Experience nature at its finest and discover the islands extensive network of walking trails. There are 25km of tracks to explore on the island, taking you through natural rainforest and areas of thick bushland. See a koala in the wild and admire the dry wattles and beautiful barks of eucalypts. Emerge from the undergrowth and be amazed by the stunning lookout points boasting fantastic views of the Coral Sea. The most popular walk is Forts Walk which mixes history with scenery and nature. The walk takes roughly 90 minutes and will open out onto stunning look out points, open rainforest with koalas and a WWII observation tower with command post and gun emplacements still intact.

There are two snorkel trails on Magnetic Island, one at Nelly Bay and the other at Geoffrey Bay. The beautiful fringing reef is teaming with colourful marine life and impressive coral gardens. White surface floats will guide you along and act as floatation resting points. The floats have letters on them which relate to the swim cards that can be bought from participating retail outlets on the island. The Nelly Bay trail is 100 metres off the beach near Base Backpackers and is a great swim for beginners. The Geoffrey Bay trail is for stronger swimmers and starts 400 metres from the beach opposite Hotel Arcadia taking you to the Moltke wreck which is also a popular underwater dive site. Peppers Blue on Blue Resort Boardwalk Restaurant and Bar

Elegantly positioned on the waterfront of Magnetic Island’s marina, Boardwalk Restaurant and Bar is an outstanding dining option for both in-house guests and members of the public. A modern tropical affair, by day diners can gaze upon yachts bobbing in the marina while at night the boardwalk is lit up for romantic elegance. The waterfront location and stunning setting make it a favourite for intimate weddings and large celebrations.

What you’ll find there The Boardwalk Restaurant and Bar’s menus have been designed with holiday makers in mind. Breakfast for in-house guests is a hearty cooked buffet, perfect to fuel adventure seekers before a day of exploration on the island. Lunch is a light and casual affair, with a focus on freshness and taste; while dinner is a 5-star gourmet experience, celebrating the fusion of fine seafood and the freshest produce. Executive Chef, Nicholas Redsell, joined Peppers Blue on Blue in July 2015. He has catered for world dignitaries, including President Barack Obama. He is passionate about featuring locally sourced produce on his menus. Our picks include the coconut poached chicken salad with tomato chili jam, watercress and cashew from the lunch menu; delightfully tasty and refreshing. Our choices from the dinner menu were Coffin Bay oysters with lime to start; shredded confit duck with potato gnocchi and exotic mushrooms as our main; finishing with apple tarte tatin with vanilla bean ice cream and sticky maple reduction.

Cost Lunch mains average $18 - $22 and include delicious dishes such as a bucket of tiger prawns or smoked salmon with smashed avocado. Dinner mains range from $38 - $44, fantastic value for wild-caught barramundi or grilled salmon. The menu is comprehensive offering vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Why we love it! Executive Chef, Nicholas Redsell is quoted as saying, “Food is love; love is everything; therefore food is everything.” The love and attention shown to quality ingredients shines on the plate. With stunning marina views, a cocktail or glass of wine in hand and mouth-watering food, dining at Pepper’s Blue on Blue Resort is a memorable experience.

Experience a tropical paradise Experience the allure of Magnetic Island at Peppers Blue on Blue Resort. From the moment you arrive, the memories begin. Uniquely positioned on the stunning Nelly Bay marina, you are invited to step off the Sealink fastcat ferry from Townsville into a world of tranquility. Your suite at Peppers Blue on Blue Resort is your private sanctuary. To fully embrace its waterfront location, all of the resort’s sleekly decorated rooms and suites offer sun-drenched balconies. The one, two and three bedroom apartments take advantage of the stunning seascapes, boasting uninterrupted marina and mountain views. THINGS TO DO WHITSUNDAYS GETTING AROUND

MUST-DO IN THE WHITSUNDAYS

By Taxi call 131 008

Go sailing of course!

Taxis are available throughout the Whitsunday region, 24 hours per day.

The Whitsundays is known around the world for its beautiful sailing experiences, Whitehaven Beach and the fringing reefs, perfect for snorkeling. You can choose from a plethora of day trips, overnight sailing adventures or even hire your own boat. Flick through this magazine and you will see more information about the various tours on offer.

By Water Cruise Whitsundays operates ferries and island connections between Hamilton Island Airport, Airlie Beach, Long Island, Daydream Island, South Molle Island and many island resorts. It also provides tours to Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef. Please be aware that they are now located at a brand new terminal building at the Port of Airlie.

TOURS AND TRANSPORT SERVICES

Hire a jet ski A jet ski has to be one of the most fun things to do in the Whitsundays – you are in control of your own machine, able to go as fast or as slow as you like and venture into places you wouldn’t be able to see on a bigger vessel.

Go camping on Whitehaven Beach There are many tour operators, shuttle services and bus companies who operate throughout the Whitsundays. Contact the Whitsunday Visitor Information Centre on +61 7 4945 3967 to find the one which suits your itinerary and to make a booking.

WEATHER

Enjoy nature at its most beautiful and remote with a camping experience on Whitehaven Beach. Be the only people on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, see the stars shine brighter than you’ve ever seen them shine before and wake up for an early morning swim in the crystal clear water with no-one else around. You can jump on a barge which will take you to the beach, drop you, your friends and your camping gear off, then return to pick you up the next morning.

Venture north to beautiful Bowen Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands enjoy warm weather year-round making it perfect for beach-side holidays. The area is on the same latitude as Honolulu in the northern hemisphere so has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 27.4 degrees.

Weather in February/March The Whitsunday region in February is known for its heavy rainfall. The rainy season is generally throughout January and February, easing in March. Temperatures are still extremely hot and the humidity makes it feel hotter. Fortunately the cool ocean breeze helps ease the heat. The 2015 rainy season was short and experts are predicting the same again this year. Advice for tourists is to drink lots of water and stay out of the midday sun.

At the northern end of the Whitsundays is the town of Bowen, the oldest town in North Queensland. It has many picturesque beaches, stunning remote areas, snorkeling and walking tracks – head through the town to Queens Beach, Horseshoe Bay and Rose Bay. When you are in need of refreshment Bowen has a good selection of quality eateries, check out Grandview Hotel, Le Sorelle and Horseshoe Bay Café.

B

owen beautiful

Breathtaking beaches, the Big Mango and the Bowen Jetty, find out why Bowen is one of Queensland’s most desirable holiday picks.

HISTORICAL

As North Queensland’s oldest town, Bowen is brimming with history, especially at the Bowen Historical Museum on Gordon Street. Discover the early geological surrounds of the district, followed by early indigenous inhabitance to the early European settlers. The Gothenburg is one of the most famous shipwrecks on the Queensland Coast with the loss of more than 100 lives, with relics from the wreck on display in the museum. The Bowen Aerodrome is home to a Catalina museum, commemorating the involvement Bowen had as a base for Catalina flying boats during World War II. The museum contains five dioramas all built on 1/72 scale. Even a gentle meander through the streets will unearth interesting locations. Known as the mural capital of Australia, Bowen has more than 25 intricately painted mural sites. They depict a diverse history from the town’s early settlement, involvement with World War II to present day industry. You can find a list of mural sites by visiting the Bowen Information Centre at the Big Mango. From the ‘Bowenwood’ water tank to the historical CBD buildings, enjoy discovering beautiful Bowen in the northern Whitsundays region.

BOWEN JETTY Not far from the foreshore on Santa Barbara Parade, visit Bowen’s famous jetty. In 2007 Bowen was used to portray 1930s Darwin in Baz Luhrmann’s film Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. The Jetty was heavily featured in the movie.

BIG MANGO On Bowen’s southern entrance on the Bruce Highway, keep an eye out for the famous ‘Big Mango’ at the Bowen Visitor Information Centre. An excellent photo opportunity at 10 metres tall, this mango statue is indeed the largest in the world! Bowen is famous for growing large numbers of juicy, golden mangoes. Ask at the Information Centre for the 100% bowen mango sorbet – it is a totally healthy, utterly delicious treat

MULLER’S LAGOON Mullers Lagoon is 23.57 hectares of picturesque parkland and botanical gardens in the centre of town. The Lagoon is a hot spot for birdwatchers with 176 species of bird life inhabiting the area. A great location for the family, it features a playground, picnic area, public toilets and free barbecues. For those with a green thumb the lagoon is home to a vast array of native and exotic plant life, from Aloes, Adeniums and Agaves from Africa and America, to Cycas and Pachypodiums from Madagascar.

PICTURESQUE LOOKOUTS To see Bowen from above, journey up Flagstaff Hill and enjoy a cool smoothie or bite to eat at the panoramic and aptly named, Three Sixty café. It’s often referred to as one of the best ocean view locations in Queensland with Whitsunday Island vistas. You’ll need walking shoes for Horseshoe Bay Lookout, located on the Cape Edgecumbe walking circuit. This walk also takes you to the World War II Radar Station Lookout.

WHAT MAKES CORAL COVE APARTMENTS SO SPECIAL? The luxury, comfort and elegance of our apartment is a real stand-out! We discovered that each apartment has a different design, custom-made with unique features. Our most striking feature was the sumptuous white leather lounge set just off the varandah in the open plan lounge room in front of a huge flat screen T.V. The entire apartment was open plan, light, airy and tastefully decorated in with luxurious creams with quality finishes. The kitchen flowed into the lounge which then flowed onto the huge king-size bedroom suite which had sliding doors for privacy, a walk-in wardrobe and large bathroom. When we opened the sliding doors we could see the turquoise ocean from our bed! And, in the morning, we took our breakfast on the balcony gazing out at the stunning view and enjoying the warm sea breeze. In the evening, we took a stroll and enjoyed direct access to a private beach with just the two of us watching the sunset.

WHAT SORT OF FACILITIES ARE THERE? Coral Cove Apartments is a 4.5 star complex. It effortlessly exudes class and indulgence yet still manages to retain the natural charm of a beachside holiday in

North Queensland. Our friendly hosts greeted us with some fresh, locally picked mangoes and explained the easy to use and secure covered parking. They also offered us free access to their broadband system. We had access to all the modcons, from the surround sound flat screen T.V. with extensive Foxtel channels to the fully equipped kitchen that had enough crockery and implements to cook a five-course meal! It even had an ice machine! We had everything we needed in the apartment so it was hard to leave but when we did venture out we noticed the entire complex is beautiful. There is a swimming-pool, a hot tub and direct access to a secluded beach with great snorkeling. At night, we discovered there is an on-site restaurant, an Indian restaurant just down the road which delivers room service and a little cafÊ perfect for breakfast or lunch, just a few minutes’ walk away.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND CORAL COVE APARTMENTS TO A FRIEND? Definitely! If you are looking for the ultimate romantic get-away or even a place to treat the whole family, there are 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and even a penthouse. The kids can splash in the pool and you can watch them play safely while relaxing in your sun lounger. Heaven.

Wings Adventure Park

EXPERIENCE THE 4WD ADVENTURE PARK

WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR? What a great tour to do with kids over 8 years of age! The best part of the tour is the endless laughter as two people jump on board their own all terrain vehicle to drive through obstacles and challenge areas... the tour features both man made and natural exploration tracks and I have to warn you about the awesome MUDDDDD!!!!!!!! The Wings Adventure Park is one of the newest tourist attractions on the mainland in the Whitsundays and it’s such a unique land based attraction. Nestled in the Whitsunday Hinterland this 470 acre park has been custom designed to create a tourism experience that you’ll talk about for years!

WHERE DID YOU GO? The courtesy bus collects you from Base Backpackers in Airlie Beach, you then take a 40 minute drive into the hinterland with the tour guide driving the bus and playing an instructional video guiding you through what to expect while at the Wings 4WD Adventure Park, it even covers safety and operation of the buggies so by the time you arrive you’re feeling confident and ready to get started. The guide gives you a brief overview of the 10km of trails as you select your helmet and buggy to get ready for action!

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND? Absolutely. The owners have built this park with a passion for providing an awesome experience for their customers and the location pays homage to all things Aussie with the bushlands featuring kangaroos, wallabies and koalas hiding in the gum trees!

The buggies seat two passengers and the tour takes you through awesome Aussie bushland after cruising for a while you arrive at the man made challenge area - a series of obstacles designed to have you laughing hysterically as you master the course. You then head off through dry creek beds, gullies and up a mountain to a wicked lookout over the entire hinterland before heading down into the central mud pit. Who would have thought mud would be so much fun!!!

AquaBus WHAT MAKES THIS TOUR UNIQUE? You can watch as the bus becomes a boat, be a passenger when it drives straight off the road and into the water! It doesn’t get much cooler than that! Aqua Bus is one of only 100 amphibious boats of its kind in the whole world and passengers get to experience a tour that travels by both land and by sea.

WHY CHOOSE THIS TOUR? There is no other tour like it in Airlie Beach. Tours depart regularly and last approximately an hour. Aqua Bus is perfect for families looking for a fun, affordable activity that all ages will enjoy. Choose this tour if you want to experience an exciting activity without committing to a full-day of your holiday. You can experience this tour and still have time for a swim in the lagoon and a leisurely lunch.

WHERE DOES THE TOUR GO? We left from the Whitsunday Sailing Club and were taken overland to the Port of Airlie boat ramp where we entered the water. We were all excited about entering the water and everyone was wondering how the bus would become a boat. We gave a cheer when she dived straight in and began floating easily. It

wasn’t long before we accelerated away through the water like it was the most natural thing in the world! Finally in the water we headed out to sea and across the bay, close enough to see the streets of Airlie Beach and look at the small live-aboard yachts moored close-by. From here we sailed to Cannonvale Beach, getting close enough to touch Whitsunday Magic which is a sunken tall ship nestling on the shallow sand bed. We left the water again at Abell Point Marina where we drove easily up the boat ramp and back onto our land legs. The final part of the tour was a fun drive through Airlie Beach main street where we played music and waved to everyone before returning back to the Sailing Club.

WHO WOULD LIKE THIS TOUR? The AquaBus is perfect for all ages and especially families with young children who are looking for a gentler ride than some of the bigger boat trips which can be unsuitable for little ones. It is extremely safe, travels at a steady pace and is comfortable to rideon. The crew are friendly, funny and full of entertaining stories about the area. The crew are also great with kids, they bring out water pistols and bubble makers to squirt and blow at each other. They make sure everyone has fun, even the adults!

74 magical Whitsunday Islands WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS? Regardless of how you choose to experience the Whitsunday Islands there’s one single must do experience which is Whitehaven Beach / Hill Inlet. NOW... to clarify any confusion when booking your tour, most companies will take you to either Hill Inlet lookout (via anchorage in Tongue Bay) or Whitehaven Beach - two very different experiences that showcase one of the top 10 beaches in the world! Hill Inlet is at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach where you do an easy bush walk to the lookout before venturing down to Betty’s Beach at the base of the inlet. Whitehaven Beach itself is 7km of majestic silica sand that feels like it continues forever. My personal pick for visiting tourists would always be do Hill Inlet lookout simply for the amazing birds eye view of the swirling silica sands that disappear into Whitsunday Island, BUT it’s all amazing and you must do one of these two options!

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE ADVENTURE? If you’re looking for a pure man versus wild experience, try island camping, with camp sites and bush walking tracks scattered across the islands on the Ngaro Sea Trail. Visit the national parks website www.nprsr.qld.gov.au for maps and frequently asked questions. Go Bareboating! Literally, with no license required, gather a group of friends and set your own course through the islands for 5+ night stays. If you can’t hustle your friends to join you, book yourself onto a live-aboard sailing adventure. There’s over 50 boats operating in Airlie Beach for you to book a 3 day 2 night trip of a lifetime. There are plenty of other adventurous tour options to enjoy this aquatic playground - like a sea kayaking/ camping combo, snorkelling/diving the fringing island reefs, jet skis, ocean racing yachts, fast inflatable boats... Let alone seeing the islands from the air onboard a tiger moth, helicopter, seaplane or taking the leap as a sky diver!

WHAT TYPES OF ACCOMMODATION IS ON OFFER? Airlie Beach, with its two bustling marinas, is the mainland base for accessing the islands. There’s, literally, island resorts for any budget - ranging from 6-3 star, 7 of the 74 islands are inhabited... Hayman, Hook, Hamilton, Daydream, South Molle, Long and Lindeman (currently closed for renovations). Oh and let’s not forget Dent. While you can’t sleep over it’s an island dedicated to golf!

and Council’s staff managing the delivery of the works,” she said.

Mayor Jenny Whitney said the civil works for the breakwater and causeway were completed before Christmas, with the site clean-up finalised in early January.

Additional works to complete minor upgrades to parking and rigging areas at the facility will continue into early February, however, the ramp and pontoon facility will remain available to the public.

“After the Minister for Main Roads, Road Safety and Ports inspected the facility in August last year to announce additional funding for this project, we undertook a tendering process and commenced construction works in September 2015,” Mayor Whitney said.

“Our staff and contractors have been working exceptionally hard over the past five months to deliver the project as swiftly as possible to ensure that our community and local rescue services enjoy access to a safe boat ramp facility,” Mayor Whitney said.

“The Queensland Government funded the $3 million project, with local contractors engaged on two of the three contracts

The project has been completed within budget and an official opening is expected to be held later this month.

to Bar LV WHERE IS BAR LV? The now infamous Little Vegas Burger Bar has given birth to a funky new offspring called Bar LV. Located directly above Little Vegas on Airlie Beach main street the new addition to the family is enticing me with some soulful beats floating out of the window. As I look up from the street I can see people laughing, eating and drinking, I feel mesmerised! I cannot wait to get up there!

WHAT YOU’LL FIND THERE The stairway to the bar is dimly lit with old style Edison globes and industrial piping. As we reach the top of the stairs you can see the walls are covered with artistic graffiti giving a city grunge feel to the space. We are seated at a window table, over-looking the street below. The bi fold windows open out onto Airlie Beach main street and we sit listening to the funky tunes, watching the sun go down behind the mountains. They have an eclectic drinks list including craft and local beers plus exclusive wines that cannot be found anywhere else in Airlie Beach. I’m here for a cocktail though and am excited to see their very own infused vodkas such as bubblegum, Werthers Original and Maltesers, just to name a few. The Redskin has become a fast favourite at Bar LV. I opted for the Fizzer Wizzer which was tangy and delicious and had a sherbert rim, I felt like a big kid in an alcoholic sweet shop! Bar LV is mainly about the music, the ambience and the boutique drink menu but they do have a small bar food menu, available from 6pm till late. A must try are their crispy fried pork belly sliders with chilli caramel and aioli, deep fried triple cream Brie with cranberry jam and the sweet potato fries with a house made herb aioli.

THE COST Every cocktail is a standard $16 and they offer $10 cocktails on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6pm – 9pm. Craft beers range from $5 - $9 and bottles of wine start at $28 going all the way up to $150 for the high-end connoisseurs.

WHY WE LOVE IT We love that Little Vegas has created yet another venue where locals and tourists can experience a funky city atmosphere in the middle of small holiday town. It turns convention on its head, walking into Bar LV, you are transformed into a whole new environment. It has given a new edge to the bar scene in Airlie Beach and I can see the locals are already embracing it with open arms.

at WATERS EDGE RESORT WHERE IS WATERS EDGE RESORT? We were lucky enough to spend our honeymoon at Waters Edge and it was the most beautiful place to stay. The apartments are quietly nestled into the hillside amongst lush tropical gardens, just 100 metres away from the vibrant cosmopolitan village of Airlie Beach.

WHAT MAKES WATERS EDGE SO SPECIAL? The apartments are in an elevated location which gave us uninterrupted sea views from our private balcony where we ate breakfast each morning. From the balcony we could see an aerial view over Airlie Beach. We enjoyed being so close to the heart of Airlie yet still far enough away from the bustle of town. Our apartment felt like a sanctuary but we could also take a short walk to the main street which is buzzing with lively cafes, restaurants, shops and bars.

WHAT SORT OF FACILITIES ARE THERE? There is a heated outdoor jacuzzi and three on-site swimming-pools with cascading wet-edge waterfalls and spectacular views of the Coral Sea, a picturesque oasis for a late afternoon swim. Other facilities onsite include undercover parking, a gymnasium, bbq areas and free wifi. Inside, our apartment was thoughtfully decorated in a soft tropical style with Balinese dĂŠcor and open-plan living. The open layout meant the apartment was practical and light with a gentle flow between each area. We were pleased to see modern furnishings throughout, a flat-screen television, a large bath tub and fully-equipped kitchen.

When we opened the fridge we were thrilled to discover a chilled bottle of champagne congratulating us on our wedding. It is the little things like this that made our stay so special.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND WATERS EDGE TO A FRIEND? Yes. It was the perfect place for us to relax and unwind after the chaos of our wedding. There was easy access to everything we needed, like shops and restaurants, yet enough privacy and seclusion to enjoy the romance of our honeymoon.

Mackay’s Golden Trails Revealed By Shelley Thomas

“We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfilment.” — Hilaire Belloc

THERE ARE NO FLIES ON THIS BEACH, JUST THE CONSTANT OVERHEAD TRAFFIC OF BUTTERFLIES.

Brian also tells me Hidden Valley, a 1.5km rainforest circuit which opens on to the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, has great historical significance to the Yuibera tribe, the first inhabitants of the area, pre-dating European settlement.

Welcome to Cape Hillsborough National Park – nature’s melting pot, just 50km North-West of Mackay, where rainforest meets the ocean, and visitors often share the beach with mobs of resident wallabies and kangaroos.

He shows me ancient remains of a stonefish trap and, later, on a walk through the Diversity Boardwalk (a 1.2km track that meanders through Melaleuca woodland, mangroves and open eucalypt forest) he points out the largest “midden” he’s ever seen. A few days earlier, on a walk through the Hidden Valley (Yuibera trail, to use its Aboriginal name), swarms of Blue Tiger butterflies perform aerial displays, close enough to touch.

For Park Ranger 005, Brian Kunst, this is Paradise and his work place rolled into one. The best job in the world, he says. I’m following his advice to walk the “big four” – a clutch of national park tracks based around Cape Hillsborough. First on my list is Andrew’s Point track. At high tide, this involves a 5.2km return hike or, at low tide, a mere 1.5km stroll, with one leg of the track being the beach. The scenery is mesmerising – a passage through cool remnant rainforest that opens to eucalypt forest along the top of the ridge – matched only by bursts of birdsong, against the throbbing percussion of crickets and cicadas.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have Park Ranger 005 as their personal guide – although many visitors who return to Cape Hillsborough year after year know Brian by name. He’s possibly the happiest chap I’ve had the good fortune to meet… Visit mackayregion.com to discover more about The Mackay Region’s unspoilt nature experiences.
