AUSTRALIA DAY

24TH JANUARY 2019

26TH JANUARY 2019

Time: 10:00am - 11:00am

Australia Day, 26 January, is the day to reflect on what it means to be Australian, to celebrate contemporary Australia and to acknowledge our history.

Location: Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre, Collins Ave, Edge Hill Website: www.cairnsbotanicgardens.com.au Phone: 4032 6650 Email: gardens@cairns.qld.gov.au Notes: A sign will be placed at the Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre (sandwich board) when a tour is booked and confirmed as going ahead Cost: FREE - bookings essential Category: Community event Join the volunteer guides for a free history tour of the Tanks and Botanic Gardens precinct. Learn about how the Botanic Gardens evolved and the role played by the Tanks in the history of the precinct. • Tours leave from the Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre at 10:00am. • The walk takes approximately one hour. • It is recommended that you wear sensible walking shoes. Bookings are essential. Phone (07) 4032 6650 by 3:30pm on Wednesday prior to confirm your place in the tour.

On Australia Day we celebrate all the things we love about Australia: land, sense of fair go, lifestyle, democracy, the freedoms we enjoy but particularly our people. Australia Day is about acknowledging and celebrating the contribution that every Australian makes to our contemporary and dynamic nation. From our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - who have been here for more than 65,000 years - to those who have lived here for generations, to those who have come from all corners of the globe to call our country home. The marking of 26 January is an important date in Australia’s history and has changed over time: starting as a celebration for emancipated convicts and evolving into what is now a celebration of Australia that reflects the nation’s diverse people. Australia Day continues to be hugely popular, with 3 in 4 Australians believing it has a bigger meaning beyond being just a day off. More than half of all Australians participate in Australia Day attending events organised by State Governments, local councils, community groups or getting together with family and friends. In addition, over 16,000 new Australians become citizens on Australia Day. Check local council websites to see what events are being held where you are! THE COAST OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES Awash with sparkling beaches, vibrant cities, a rugged hinterland and hundreds of annual sunshine hours, the East Coast is where Australia shines. Once you venture out of the capital cities and hit the highway for an epic road trip, lesser-known treasures arise in many of the smaller shires.

DID YOU KNOW? Located just north of Bundaberg, 1770 is the only town in the world which has a number for a name! Lieutenant James Cook made the first landfall by a European on what was to become the Discovery Coast, and the birthplace of Queensland, on May 24, 1770. From the town of 1770 discover Lady Musgrave Island, an island cay with an internal lagoon, unique to the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef parallels the Queensland Coast and is accessible from most destinations. At its heart is the Whitsundays, A string of tropical islands dotted along an idyllic stretch of paradise. The Whitsunday islands are world famous for the luxurious resorts which lay upon them, the azure water which surrounds them as well as the pure white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach and the iconic Heart Reef.

DID YOU KNOW? Mackay is one of the best places in Queensland to see a platypus in the wild. Take a day trip to Eungella National Park and watch this unique duck-billed mammal splash among the water of Broken River. Continue the journey northward for a taste of the tropics in Townsville. The cosmopolitan city combines federation architecture with an array of top restaurants and boutique shopping. Soak in the coastal vibe with a stroll along The Strand or get close to nature and cuddle a koala at Billabong Sanctuary. Off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is one of the few islands you can drive to. Take your vehicle on the car ferry and explore many of its 23 beautiful bays. Magnetic Island was named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770, when the island appeared to affect the magnetic compass on his ship.

The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands is Airlie Beach, a backpacking nirvana filled with palm-fringed beaches, waterfront parks and alfresco dining restaurants. It is the epitome of the chilled-out Australian beach lifestyle, a blend of fun in the sun followed by an entertaining night scene.

For a small island, there is much to do on Magnetic Island. Soar above the island in the Red Baron; the only two-passenger, open cockpit biplane on floats, in the world. Ride bareback into the ocean on a horse trek or discover koalas in the wild with a bush walk to historic WWII forts.

South of the Whitsundays, venture to a place where nature comes naturally. The Mackay region is home to quiet beaches, lesser-known tropical islands and Queensland’s only blue river, the Pioneer. It is one of Australia’s best fishing locations with a selection of tidal creeks, inland dams, mangrove systems and deep-water reefs providing a plethora of fish to hook.

The exotic rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef and nestled inbetween these two World Heritage areas is the modern mecca of Cairns, Queensland’s most northern tropical city. Laze on a northern beach or explore the rustic artist village of Kuranda by taking a gondola ride above the lush rainforest canopy. One of the most fascinating areas to explore in Northern Queensland is the Daintree Rainforest. It is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world, thought to be more than 135 million years old.

DID YOU KNOW? Queensland is home to five of Australia’s 11 World Natural Heritage areas. These include the Scenic Rim National Parks, Fraser Island, Riversleigh Fossil Fields, the Wet Tropics (including Daintree National Park), and one of the great natural Wonders of the World; the Great Barrier Reef. A fascinating place of exceptional beauty, Fraser Island is 120km in length. It contains more than 100 freshwater lakes all ringed by sand, and the surrounding rainforest is the only rainforest in the world which grows on highelevation sand dunes! Visit famous 75-mile beach, see migratory humpback whales during the winter months and view native dingoes on the beach.

DID YOU KNOW? There is an exotic fruit in the Daintree Rainforest known as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It is the only fruit on the planet which tastes like chocolate pudding, yet it is low in fat and contains more than four times the vitamin C of an orange; a chocoholics dream come true! You can sample the delicacy at a tropical fruit farm in Cape Tribulation. With so much to see and do, Australia’s East Coast is a land of possibility. It’s your time to shine!

12

DID YOU KNOW? Byron Bay is Australia’s most easterly point, the first place on the mainland to see the sun rise. A surf haven for wave riders, Byron Bay has earned its reputation as a world-class surf destination. But if you’ve never picked up a board before, never fear, Byron Bay still provides a veritable feast of attractions; from music festivals and art studios to markets, organic food, cultural tours and natural beauty. While it still retains an alternative vibe and laid-back atmosphere, Byron Bay is a destination for discerning travellers wishing to explore its stretches of pristine coastline, hinterland waterfalls and rainforest retreats. MUST DO: Once a hippie community hidden in the rainforest, Nimbin provides an insight into the alternative lifestyle that embodies the Byron shire today. The village is as intriguing as it is quirky, with a fascinating mural streetscape of indigenous, rainforest and psychedelic facades. Continue your journey north across the border into Queensland, where the beer is cold and the sun is hot.

FAMILYHOLIDAYFUN

High-speed Boating Adventure With Ocean Rafting

Ocean Rafting offers a selection of high-speed, life-changing tours around the Whitsunday Islands, combining the very best of iconic experiences. Within the space of seven magical hours you’ll find yourself immersed in an underwater wonderland, snorkelling pristine coral surrounded by a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. Then, set foot on the purest white silica sand in the world on Whitehaven Beach before embarking on a guided bush walk through a national park to arrive at the panoramic lookout of Hill Inlet. Three bucket-list worthy adventures packed into one excursion. Can you handle this much fun?

WHAT TOURS ARE AVAILABLE? Ocean Rafting provide two main tours, tailored to your preference of snorkelling or spending more time on Whitehaven Beach. Northern Exposure takes you on an exhilarating ride to the northern islands of the Whitsundays for two epic sessions of snorkelling around secret locations surrounding Hook Island. Afterwards, your high-speed boat zooms toward world-famous Whitehaven Beach. Enjoy a buffet-style lunch on the white sand of Hill Inlet at the Northen end of Whitehaven Beach

before embarking on your bush walk to the iconic Hill Inlet lookout, to see the silica swirls among the turquoise and aqua water. The second tour option is Southern Lights, where you visit one snorkelling destination and then enjoy two hours relaxing at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach. You then get to experience the northern end by Hill Inlet before bush-walking to the Hill Inlet Lookout.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TOUR? Ocean Rafting’s semi-rigid inflatable vessels are super-fast, making the ride itself part of the adventure. Twist and turn across the waves for a ride that resembles an adrenalin-inspired jet boat adventure for added fun. They are the fastest day-trip boats in the Whitsundays meaning you’ll have more time snorkelling and on the beach by reaching your destinations faster! The buffet lunch can be included for a small additional cost; but the spread of seafood, meat, fruit, bread and salads is certainly worth it! After snorkelling, the bar officially opens; beer, cider, water and soft drinks can be purchased throughout the journey.

Magnetic Island Meet your Guides

“Magnetic Island is our home, we know it well and we love sharing its stories and coastline beauty with you.”

We have both worked in many areas of tourism over the years and together we bring many aspects and experiences to our own tourism business.”

Holidaying is always better when you can explore an exotic destination with the knowledge and passion of a local. Its this intimate knowledge of the surroundings that ensures the most memorable experiences.

WHERE DID THE CONCEPT FOR AQUASCENE COME FROM?

Stephanie and Adam Hinks both grew up on Magnetic Island as teenagers in the 1980s and spent their formative years exploring the wilderness and developing a passion for the island and its hidden beaches.

HOW DID YOU BOTH ENTER THE TOUR AND TOURISM INDUSTRY? “As a teenager, Adam started working on his parent’s tour boat which was based on Magnetic Island, and my family owned a café on Magnetic Island.

“Aquascene was created out of a necessity when we started our own family. Adam was working away a lot as a Captain of many ships, so we decided to embark on our own tourism business, Aquascene Charters, that was 14 years ago! I run the office and multi-task as a deckhand when required while Adam runs the tours and activities. Even the kids help out on tour or with water safety as we are also a Surf Life Saving family.”

friends and perhaps a spot of fun fishing. We explore secluded bays that visitors otherwise wouldn’t see and share stories, history and reef education about the island. We tailor each experience to suit the tide and weather to ensure guests have a magical day.”

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON MAGNETIC ISLAND? “There are so many special memories associated with many places on the island. We got married 17 years ago at sunset at a secluded bay. If you ask Adam he would say Florence Bay, with the amazing beauty of a fringing reef, fish life, beautiful beach lined with sheoak trees and stunning iconic granite boulders. When the water is too rough for a tour it’s our surfing bay. I love Arthur Bay and Radical Bay, every bay has a story to tell.”

ome to countless diving sites, the Great Barrier Reef has it all: from colourful coral reefs to historic wreck sites and breathtaking drop-offs. With the reef stretching the majority of the Queensland coast, the Great Barrier Reef is vast, how do you know you’re choosing the best dive and snorkel tour in the best location? We believe there are three important factors to consider when choosing a dive tour. Experience, number of passengers and lesser-known locations. You want to ensure your skipper and guide are experienced, the less people on-board means your experience will be more personalised and travelling to lesser-known locations preserves the integrity of the sites you will be diving. Ocean Dynamics ticks all three boxes, providing a luxurious, boutique dive and snorkel experience like no other.

TELL US ABOUT THE BESPOKE DIVE AND SNORKEL TOUR? Departing from the Port of Airlie Marina in Airlie Beach, Ocean Dynamics provides a five-star bespoke dive and snorkel experience to a secluded location of the inner Great Barrier Reef. Departure time is 8a.m. and the tour lasts for approximately six hours.

Children as young as 10 are able to participate in a Discovery Scuba Dive, making this tour one for the whole family to enjoy.

WHAT WILL I SEE ON THE TOUR? The Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef offer beauty and diversity unlike anywhere else on Earth. It is home to more than 600 types of hard and soft coral and provides a colourful sanctuary for countless species of fish, mollusks and starfish, marine mammals such as whales and dolphins in season and many other amazing marine creatures. With everything from schooling pelagic fish to giant clams and friendly sea turtles, you never quite know who you will bump into under the water. That’s the beauty of the Whitsundays. The tour will also include a diverse nature walk, where you will be able enjoy a short, guided walk, to view the Whitsundays from a high vantage point. Most days this will be on the beautiful Langford Island, but an alternative will be selected if needed due to weather.

No, a Discover Scuba Dive requires no experience. Ocean Dynamic’s highly-trained, caring instructors are ready to take you on your first underwater excursion for those who have never dived before. If you are already certified, instructors are ready to lead you on your next adventure, tailoring the dive to suit your level of experience.

For those not wanting to dive, snorkelling gear and stand-up paddle boards are provided for additional water sport fun. Alternatively, the spacious air-conditioned lounges aboard the yacht or its sundrenched decks are an ideal location to soak in the Whitsunday island vistas without the need to get your feet wet.

WHAT’S INCLUDED ON THE TOUR? The tour includes light refreshments on arrival, a gourmet BBQ seafood lunch onboard the yacht and state-of-the-art dive equipment, snorkelling gear, water toys and accessories are all provided. CAROLYN LEWIS Owner Managing Director, Master 5, MED 2 & PADI Advanced Open Water Diver A true Australian owned-and-operated business, Managing Director, Carolyn Lewis, is as much at home guiding a tour on the back of a jet-ski as she is managing the day-to-day operations from her office. Growing up on the Gold Coast, she has always been drawn to the ocean and would holiday regularly in the Whitsundays with her family. She opened a tour company, Ocean Dynamics, in 2004 and has specialised in luxury charter services and boutique tours since. “Since commencing water sports and charter operations, the Ocean Dynamics motto has been “It’s all about you”. We have carried this through to the present day, and we strive to ensure guest satisfaction on each and every tour and activity.” Carolyn says, “It is the little details that count – come on tour with us an you will find out exactly why our guests are blown away by our service standards”. With a focus on providing unique Whitsunday experiences for families, Carolyn introduced her own children to the wonders of underwater from a young age. Her son, Alex, recently completed his Open Water PADI certification with a friend, Byron McLean.

Where are your favourite places in the world to dive?

20

“Overseas I fell in love with remote locations in Samoa. There are limited numbers of divers and the marine life is abundant. Here in the Whitsundays, my favourite location is Cataran Bay at Border Island. The coral reefs are relatively shallow, dominated by large beautiful plate coral. It’s a great location for families to dive or snorkel.”

ONTHEWATER KIM OLSSON Guest Experience Manager PADI Dive Master & Coxswain Kim is Carolyn’s “right hand girl” and assists with ensuring each and every tour is run to a five-star standard. She has worked for Ocean Dynamics for more than three years, starting her career as head hostess and chef on Ocean Free. In early 2018, Kim transitioned to the role of Guest Experience Manager. Being a dive master, a coxswain and having travelled extensively, Kim is well placed to understand the diverse needs of five-star travellers. She is happy to go the extra mile to ensure the experiences of guests are unforgettable.

Where are your favourite places in the world to dive? “Cuba is incredible, the visibility is excellent, and the reefs are virtually undisturbed from few visitors. Cuba is home to the second largest reef in the world actually! Second runner up would probably be bull shark diving in Fiji. Here in the Whitsundays, my favourite place is Alcyonaria point off Hook Island’s northern tip. There is a lot of marine wildlife cruising amongst the bommies and a couple of good swim troughs. There are also many amazing snorkel locations along the inner reefs of Hook Island.”

JOHN MEHMET Captain and Marine Team Leader Captain of Ocean Free (Master 5 and MED 2), PADI Rescue Diver and Marine Biologist. John is originally from Hervey Bay and travelled the world before settling in the beautiful Whitsundays. His love of the ocean, both above and below the water, is abundantly noticeable with the level of knowledge and passion he projects on every tour. The best part of his job is to share his knowledge of the Great Barrier Reef with guests. He has been a part of the Ocean Dynamics team for two years. “At Ocean Dynamics we pride ourselves on customer service and it is our interaction with guests that gives us our reputation for excellence. By the end of each and every tour we are like best friends and have many return guests asking for us by name.”

Where are your favourite places in the world to dive? “With the Manta Rays in the Maldives was an unforgettable experience. In the Whitsundays, I have a secret favourite spot I only share with guests onboard our tour! You’ll have to come out with us to discover the secret.”

CARA CAVANAGH Dive Instructor Head Dive Instructor (PADI Dive Instructor), Master 5 / MED 2, and Chef. Eight years ago at Bondi Beach, a friend encouraged Cara Cavanagh to try her first dive experience. She’s been hooked ever since. Growing up in Byron Bay, she says that salt water runs through her veins. Her love of the ocean and diving is what brought her to the Whitsundays two years ago. She loves the diversity of her job with Ocean Dynamics and says there is nowhere she would rather be! “I love taking guests, especially first-time divers, on their first experience and showing them the natural wonders of our beautiful reefs. Seeing their face light up when they dive the Great Barrier Reef for the first time is priceless. Swimming alongside gentle sea turtles who aren’t phased by our presence and who make you feel welcome to their underwater world has been a highlight on some of the tours.”

Where are your favourite places in the world to dive? “I’ve dived with Great White sharks in Cape Town, South Africa. Being in the water with these majestic creatures is both exhilarating and humbling. The Philippines is also an amazing place to dive for the diversity, there is everything from World War shipwrecks to an abundance of sharks to see. The water is so clear and warm. “Here in the Whitsundays, Luncheon Bombie is my favourite place. The fish and coral life are so dense, the variety of species all in one place there is out of this world.”

A Classic Sailing Adventure On Lady Enid in the Whitsundays

T

he majestic Whitsunday Islands are a group of 74, mostly uninhabited islands in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. A unique ecosystem of lush green volcanic islands, secret inlets, undiscovered coves and vibrant fringing reefs. This area is also home to the swirling white sands of Whitehaven Beach which is made of 98% silica and has been voted one of the world’s best beaches. The sand is so fine you can exfoliate your skin and even bring a new shine to your jewellery!

Lady Enid Exploring this serene natural wonderland is best enjoyed on a sailing vessel where you can feel the breeze in your hair and marvel at the unique landscape as you glide by at a leisurely pace. Watch as the sails are hoisted, and as the engine shuts off the only sound becomes the gentle lapping of the water against the hull.

26

For our Whitsunday adventure we chose Lady Enid Sailing. This ketch (two masts) vessel is built from Rosegum and boasts a fascinating history. Designed in the 1950’s by an American architect John Alden and constructed in Sydney by John Cockle, Lady Enid raced for 36 years. She completed five Sydney to Hobart races back when they were dominated not by technology and sponsorship, but by beautiful timber boats designed with timeless, graceful lines.

Tip When you’re on-board make sure you ask the crew to tell you the story behind the name Lady Enid, it’s incredible!

A Magical Day Tour Lady Enid is a full day tour starting at 7.30am and returning at 5pm. A courtesy bus picked us up from our accommodation, taking us to Abell Point Marina where Lady Enid was moored. As we walked down the dock we could see Lady Enid’s tall wooden mast protruding proudly, the timeless, graceful lines of the deck and the wide beam of the impeccably restored classic yacht.

the deck we were pleased to discover soft cushioned seating everywhere. As we glided out of the marina towards the Whitsunday Islands I felt my worries drift away. The sails were hoisted, and the engines switched off as our hosts brought us tea, coffee and fresh scones. Throughout the morning our four hosts spent time getting to know everyone on-board, sitting with us and telling us about the islands as we sailed blissfully across the turquoise ocean.

The Swirling Sands

It was then that we knew; the experience of travelling on such a magnificent vessel would be just as exciting as seeing the Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven Beach!

Whitehaven Beach was our first destination and we followed our two guides along a walking track to Hill Inlet lookout which boasts mesmerising aerial views of the white swirling sands. Apparently, the sands move every day with the tide, so no view would ever be the same.

The phrase ‘It’s about the journey not just the destination’ sprang to mind.

After the short bushwalk up to the lookout the twinkling turquoise sea beneath looked inviting.

We boarded the vessel and were guided downstairs. Our friendly host explained where to leave our belongings and how the toilets worked. I was pleased to see that while almost every inch of the vessel had been gracefully restored keeping true to its historical values, the facilities and mod-cons that enhanced guest experience had not.

“Shhh, follow us, we know a secret bay!” Said our guide as he took us down to the beach.

The toilets were modern and easy to use and up on

Feeling like intrepid explorers we followed him around a rocky outcrop, through a little undergrowth and out onto the most perfect bay I had ever seen. Framed by smooth sandstone boulders and green foliage, the bright white sand melted into the vibrant turquoise ocean.

ONTHEWATER The water was perfectly clear, like a freshly run bath and we stripped to our swimmers and ran into the ocean like a bunch of giggling children. After an hour playing blissfully in the pristine water we saw the unmistakeable silhouette of Lady Enid peak around the edge of the bay coming to pick us up.

Hungry Sailors Once boarded, we were instantly beckoned downstairs for lunch. A sumptuous spread of fresh prawns, smoked salmon, cold meats, breads and a variety of hearty salads awaited. Everything was delicious, healthy and plentiful. Chilled water was provided all day for free from a re-fillable plastic bottle we were each given in the morning. At lunch we could also buy soft drinks, wine and beer which were served to us wherever we sat. While we ate and drank, we set sail once again and by the time lunch was cleared away we had arrived at our snorkel spot.

Snorkellers Paradise The fringing reefs surrounding the Whitsunday Islands are colourful, vibrant and teeming with marine life. If you are lucky, you might see a turtle! We were provided with stingers suits, mask, snorkel and fins. We could choose to jump off the vessel into the water and swim the short distance to the reef or our hosts would ferry us over on the small tender boat.

Sail Away With exhausted happy faces we returned to the boat and lay on the deck soaking-up the light afternoon sun as our crew hoisted the sails yet again for the journey home. After a day sharing a special experience we felt a camaraderie with the crew and the other guests so the journey home was full of laughter and conversation. To complete this experience our amazing hosts brought us a complementary glass of bubbles and an anti-pasto platter with cold meats, cheeses and olives.

A Great Barrier Reef Adventure T

he Great Barrier Reef is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a bucket list item for many travellers. This unique ecosystem boasts more than 2,300km of coral, colourful marine life and castaway atolls. It is a natural wonderland and the Whitsundays are right at its heart. Cruise Whitsundays offer a variety of ways to explore the reef on their fast-moving, modern and fully air-conditioned vessels. You can choose from a day trip to the fringing reefs among the Whitsunday Islands and visit the dazzlingly white silica sands of Whitehaven Beach. Or, you can embark on a full day adventure to the ‘Outer Reef’ and visit Heart Pontoon at Hardy Reef. Heart Pontoon is a ‘playground at the reef’; a floating structure moored 39 nautical miles from mainland Australia. Adjacent to the pontoon is a coral wall, home to an ecosystem of magnificent corals and marine life. Here, hundreds of fish species will surprise and delight you; especially the giant groper.

FULL DAY OUTER REEF EXPERIENCE Departing every day from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, guests can journey past the spectacular Whitsunday Islands en route to the outer reef.

28

Cruising to the reef couldn’t be more comfortable on the high speed catamaran with spacious air conditioned lounges, large outer viewing decks, bars serving refreshments and comfortable seating.

We were pleased to discover limitless tea and coffee is available all day and morning tea of fresh fruit and cakes was served from the canteen. All the staff are attentive, happy and positive people whose focus is to give you a memorable and safe experience. During the journey to the pontoon we enjoyed interactive snorkel and scuba dive talks which were both informative and entertaining. Especially when our dive instructors toured the lounge area dressed in full dive gear to demonstrate the features! We were travelling with my young son who thought this was amazing!

HEART PONTOON As we cruised up to the reef, all eyes were watching in awe and wonderment as the intricate patterns and colourful corals came into view. The vibrant natural wonderland that was spread out just metres below sea level was a stark contrast to the deep ocean we had just been journeying through. We couldn’t wait to jump in and explore! The pontoon is a large structure with upstairs sun lounging area, a mid-deck snorkel, mask and stinger suit collection point and underneath, an underwater observatory. We headed straight to grab our snorkel equipment and it looked like everyone on-board had the same idea! Despite this, our crew managed rush hour like a charm and we were soon kitted-up and ready to explore.

My two-year-old son was able to join the fun with equipment to suit his age. Also, for the nervous swimmers or parents of young children, there is a shallow submerged platform where you can be in the water yet stand up comfortably before fully venturing in.

SNORKELLING The highlight of the day is getting into the water and interacting with the reef and its marine life. The snorkel area couldn’t have been more safe and easy to explore. There are marker buoys and ropes clearly indicating the designated areas, or you can join a snorkel safari for a guided tour. Ideal for first-time snorkellers and experienced snorkellers who want to learn more about the reef, the snorkel safari is a fully guided and informative experience. During the 30 minute "Snorkel Safari" you'll learn how the reef was formed, how coral feeds, grows and breeds as well as seeing some very special inhabitants; from parrotfish to magnificent anemones, cleaner wrasse and of course, anemone fish (Nemo!).

SCUBA DIVING The Heart Pontoon has been designed with first-time divers in mind, with a swimming pool-like area to start the dive. Here you can stand up in waist-deep water and get used to breathing underwater before embarking on your reef adventure.

ONTHEWATER

Did you know? • The coral is an animal in the same family as jellyfish and sea anemones? • Sea cucumbers eat and poo sand and breathe through their bums? • Many reef fish can change sex during their lives?

Certified Divers are also guaranteed an incredible experience and can complete up to two dives during the day. Cruise Whitsundays experienced Dive Masters will guide you in a small group of no more than 4-5 divers around some of their favourite parts of the reef.

THE SEMI SUBMARINE If you don’t like the idea of getting in the water but would still like to see the reef from underwater, try the Semi Submarine. This is a unique experience, well worth a try even if you have already been in the water. The semi submarine cruises along the reef and a marine expert provides informative commentary on the different coral structures and marine life that swim by. It is a comfortable, air-conditioned vessel and suitable for all ages.

HELICOPTER FLIGHTS OVER HEART REEF During the day you can book a helicopter ride, which departs from the pontoon’s helicopter pad. This is a great way to truly appreciate the size, scope and beauty of the Great Barrier Reef. You'll be awed by the stunning beauty of the maze of reefs weaved together to form the Great Barrier Reef, and iconic Heart Reef is a sight to behold.

LUNCH TIME All this sea air and activity makes you hungry! The sumptuous buffet lunch is available for a couple of hours so you can plan it around your day rather than have to eat at a set time. The food and variety was plentiful, from prawns to chicken drumsticks and other cold meats, a range of healthy salads, breads, pastas, rice and fresh fruit. We enjoyed our lunch and even decided to order a glass of wine from the on-board bar!

SOUVENIR PHOTOGRAPHS You’ll notice the friendly crew photographer snapping away throughout the day; keen to help you remember the day by looking after those souvenir photos for you. They will capture the underwater shots and other candid moments during the day. As the ferry cruises back to the marina you will have the opportunity to buy a disk containing these sentimental keepsakes.

With less visitors than other parts of the reef, the coral is pristine providing the jaw-dropping panoramas you have dreamed of. Whether you’re a keen adventurer of the underwater world or prefer to observe from the surface, see the Great Barrier Reef your way, with less people and more intimate experiences. One of the main advantages of exploring the Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas is the time factor. Parts of the reef are significantly closer to the shore compared to other coastal Queensland locations, meaning you can access snorkel and dive sites faster. There is a company who can have you to Low Isles in as little as 15 minutes, providing Queensland’s fastest Great Barrier Reef tour with a total time of only two hours. Perfect if you’re pressed for time. Otherwise a raft of other options can have you soaking in the Coral Sea all day, with full day tours taking you to multiple snorkel and dive sites. And for those who want to see part of the reef but can’t bear the thought of getting in the water, there are options to join a semi-submersible boat and view marine life from an underwater observatory.

A guide to tropical weather Weather in Port Douglas is tropical. Three seasons have been publicised by local tourism boards, Tropical Beach Season, Gondwana Greentime and Warm Autumn Rain. • Tropical Beach Season is described as winter and spring in the southern hemisphere tropics. That’s April to November roughly, where temperatures are at their most pleasant and the humidity is lower. • Gondwana Greentime. Summer, December to February. This is the beginning of summer where the foliage starts to green again, the heat and humidity start to rise, but sea-breezes keep the tropical vibe pleasant. • Warm Autumn Rain. March. Monsoon time. This is the time of the year where heavy rain is most expected, however monsoonal rain can be experienced during any summer months.

Romantic retreats, adrenalin-filled adventures and unique gastronomy; Port Douglas and its surrounding World Heritage areas bring a plethora of bucket-list worthy experiences. Since its establishment in the late 1870s, Port Douglas has had many incarnations: gold-rush port, sugar-export hub, quiet fishing village. It still retains much of that classic charm and heritage today. The resort town filled with boutique experiences provides a laid-back environment for dining, shopping and tropical relaxation. Nestled between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, it’s the perfect base for day-trip adventures to absorb the wonders of World Heritage rainforest and reef.

TOP 8 THINGS TO DO

IN PORT DOUGLAS Sunday Markets

Located in Anzac Park, right on the waterfront overlooking the Coral Sea, the markets are a delightful mix of local art, craft, souvenirs and fresh produce. This is a great place to mingle with tourists and locals alike. The Sunday markets are an ingrained part of Port Douglas tradition. Shop for fresh fruit and vegetables, browse the craft stalls for unique gifts to take home, soak up the tropical vibes and listen to live musicians.

Farm and produce tours Enjoy a Personalised Farmer guided tour through a working cocoa and SmartCane Accredited sugarcane farm for the estate to plate experience. Visit a local tea plantation and take home some pure unblended rainforest tea. Try some unusual fruit on a tropical fruit tour or head inland to a tropical fruit winery.

Mossman Gorge Mossman Gorge is renowned for its clear river, peaceful swimming holes and lush rainforest. Go croc-spotting through the mangroves on the Daintree River for an up-close view of these incredible reptiles in their natural habitat. Enjoy traditional bush tucker or Daintree tea and scones before a stroll through the rainforest to see the large boulders strewn throughout the river. Enjoy a guided Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk, conducted by the local Indigenous people who provide an enchanting narrative of the rainforest and their special relationship with this unique tropical environment.

Snorkel and Sunset cruise Combine two amazing Great Barrier Reef experiences with a cruise which allows you to snorkel in the day, then enjoy a romantic sunset cruise in the evening. Your full day tour can include highlights such as visiting the Blue Lagoon at Low Isles, a stroll around the island and snorkel from the beach; before evening snacks with a sunset cruise back to Port Douglas.

Get wild with the wildlife At Wildlife Habitat, you can handfeed wallabies and kangaroos, cuddle koalas and stroke a small crocodile’s skin, as well as observe crocodile and cassowary feeding demonstrations. Down the road, Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures is the best place to see a large number of crocodiles as you take a boat cruise on a croc-infested lagoon.

Play a round, or two Port Douglas is a golfing utopia. Mirage Country Club is manicured and inviting, while Palmer Sea Reef is a tropical links course. Both Mirage and Sea Reef offer occasional croc-watching opportunities while playing; but note the warning on the card: do not approach the reptiles.

Laze at the beach Postcard-perfect and easily accessible, Four Mile Beach curves from the township of Port Douglas. Four Mile Beach has long been considered the epitome of Port Douglas; its azure waters and white sand plastered over Instagram. The vision of paradise is what you can expect to see when you arrive in this coastal village, with the beach only a 5-minute walk away from the main Port Douglas district. It’s perfect for a lazy day on the warm sand with a book in hand as you watch the boats sail by.

Surf the jungle A living museum where two UNESCO World Heritage Listed areas collide, Jungle Surfing is the best way to explore the rainforest canopy from every angle. Marvel at nature’s amphitheatre with a guided zipline tour through the Daintree Rainforest. It’s educational and exhilarating, the best way to see the rainforest from above.

Tee off in Paradise At the MIRAGE COUNTRY CLUB Port Douglas

P

ort Douglas; a unique environment where the rainforest meets the reef and the fairways let you explore some of Far North Queensland’s native landscapes as well as unique wildlife while you play a round of golf.

You are so close to the natural environment that salt water crocodiles are frequently spotted basking in the sun near the mangrove creeks!

At the Mirage Country Club in Port Douglas, visitors can experience a first-class 6200m golf course made up of a rare combination of six par 3, six par 4 and six par 5 holes.

Designed by 5 times British Open winner Peter Thomson together with renowned architect Michael Wolveridge, Mirage Country Club is iconic to Port Douglas and Australian golf. This course has style and grace as well as a series of cleverly considered challenges to test any golfer along the way.

Visiting golfers are always welcome and the club offers package deals which include green fees, electric cart, full set of clubs, balls, tees and a bottle of water for those who do not bring their own clubs. Visiting AGU members from all over Australia are entitled to play in the Club competitions three days a week at reduced rates.

The Course A typical resort style Course, Mirage Country Club boasts undulating fairways and large greens, with three different tees to cater for all categories of golfers. The spectacular layout of the course takes players through the majestic grounds of the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort and its magnificent tropical landscaping on the front nine, whilst the back nine winds through natural mangrove creeks, inlets and tidal lagoons.

36

Two fairways run adjacent to the famous Four Mile Beach whilst a beautiful panoramic mountain backdrop fringes the back nine.

Famous Fairway

At Mirage Country Club, golfers walk on the same fairways that hosted the Skins tournaments of the late eighties. You can play a round of golf on the same course as Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Isao Aoki, and Curtis Strange as well as the Australia v UK test matches.

Luxurious Leisure Facilities Afterwards, it’s up to Country Club for lunch and a cold beverage at the Oasis Bar where you can soak up the ambience on the new deck. This is also an opportunity to browse the pro shop for a comprehensive range of Ladies and Mens sports apparel and accessories. For the active visitor, the country club also has a fully air-conditioned gym with brand new Life Fitness equipment. You can also cool off in the 25m lap pool and even bring the kids to train with Bill Evans on his Will Tri Swim School Holiday Program.

Alternatively, if you’ve always wanted to try scuba diving in a safe environment ask about the Scuba IQ day training lessons available with Martin. There are also three tennis courts at the club, two are surfaced in world class synthetic and one in synpave. Private Tennis lessons are available upon request.

Aquatic Driving Range The Mirage Country Club boasts one of the very few aquatic driving ranges in Australia with the magnificent Mossman Gorge as the spectacular backdrop. Located next to the Oasis Bar, the driving range it is an ideal setting to improve your game with lessons from Club Pro Rob Brydon or warm up before a round of golf. Why not bring the whole family for some fun and entertainment with ladies, gents and children’s clubs included in the cost of a bucket of floating range balls.

Resident Golf Pro If you are keen to develop your golfing skills signup to a lesson with their resident golf pro, Robert Brydon. A platinum member of the Australian PGA, Rob has over 30 years experience in the golfing industry. After touring for 4 years Rob took on the position of Golf Operations Manager at several large resorts in Japan and Malaysia, including the Arnold Palmer designed Damai Golf Club. Rob brings his AAA coaching rating to the Mirage Country Club for the benefit of its members as well as the general public.

What do you love about the Port Douglas area? Port Douglas is one of Australia’s foremost tourist destinations with so many attractions, especially the Great Barrier Reef and associated water activities. Living in Far North Queensland is like being on a permanent holiday!

What is your favourite hole at the Mirage Country Club? The third hole, a relatively short but demanding par 5 of 465 metres. An accurate drive from the elevated tee overlooking Four Mile beach gives long hitters a chance to reach the green in two, however danger lurks on each side of the small, steeply tiered putting surface. The right hand side is a tropical beachside jungle hazard, the left has a number of steep bunkers that collect balls like a magnet. Play the hole correctly and eagles are possible, stray offline a little and double and triple bogeys come into play.

What’s your handicap?

Meet the GM GEOFF PEARD Geoff unites two passions in his role at the Mirage Country Club; his love of golf and his life-long skills in hospitality. Geoff lived in Far North Queensland for 15 years, spent two years as the GM of Darwin Gold Club, then returned to the area to take on the role of revitalising the iconic Mirage Country Club under the new ownership of the Fullshare Group.

MISSION

STOP AND SOAK UP THE SERENITY OF ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST TRANQUIL TROPICAL DESTINATIONS. As the halfway point in-between Townsville and Cairns, take the opportunity to meander barefoot along one of Mission Beach’s pristine shorelines, where the rainforest fringes the glimmering turquoise tide. Sound’s magical? This is only the start of why Mission Beach should be on your travel itinerary. Mission Beach is one of the few places along the Queensland coast where two World Heritage areas meet, the Wet Tropics rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. This stretch of paradise is also one of the closest mainland destinations to the Great Barrier Reef, only 38km away. Visitors wanting a unique diving or snorkelling experience are in luck, as it only takes an hour to reach some of the reef’s most beautiful and unique coral, meaning more time in the water viewing nature at its finest and less time on a boat. 14km of tropical sandy beaches line the four rustic villages which collectively make up Mission Beach. The villages of Bingil Bay, Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach each add their own unique vibe to this relaxed community. The village of Mission Beach is a great place to start your holiday. Stroll the eclectic array of gift stores and art galleries, then familiarize yourself with some of the town’s popular eateries, from cafes to bars and gourmet restaurants. Don’t let the relaxed ambience and casual way of life fool you, hiding among the villages are some of the best seafood delicacies and resort luxuries on the Queensland coast.

B

Alongside breathtaking scenery, Mission Beach is home to unique and endangered wildlife. The Southern Cassowary is one of the most extraordinary looking large birds in the world, and the rainforest surrounding Mission Beach is where the majority of them reside. If you’re lucky, you may see one walking through bush or even through the grounds of your accommodation, though weighing on average 60kg, it’s advisable never to approach them. You may find that you’re rather content laying beachside with a cool beverage in hand, but if you’re looking to fill your days with discovery and adventure, you’ve come to the right place! Express trips to the Great Barrier Reef can have you from coast to coral in only 45 minutes! In fact a plethora of water-based charters and activities are available. Deep sea charters can take you to the outer reef for a day of fishing or a day of diving. Experience white water rafting in the Tully Gorge, or paddle your way from beach to beach on a kayak. Go on an invigorating crocodile and wildlife tour, or walk above rainforest canopy on a Skywalk. Accelerate your adrenalin with a skydive or satisfy your sweet tooth with a cocoa bean to chocolate bar experience at a chocolate factory.

If you are keen to get in the water there are two local companies that cab take you there. If you are looking for an underwater scuba diving adventure, Mission Beach Dive, offer both scuba diving and snorkeling experiences on their tour. This is a challenging, mesmerising voyage, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural wonderland of the Great Barrier Reef. Mission Beach is about feeling great. AQUARIUM ANIMAL PROFILE: Species: Coral (Duncanopsammia sp.) Background: Whilst many corals resemble plants, they are actually a colony of animals called polyps. Coral polyps look like an upside-down jellyfish, one of their relatives. Over 600 species of hard and soft corals can be found within the Great Barrier Reef. Hard corals are the true architects of the Reef, whereby their limestone skeleton creates the three-dimensional structure for marine life to live within. Species information: Corals have a relationship with a miniscule organism called zooxanthellae. Zoox.’s live within the tissue of the polyp, providing them with energy, as well as their colour! This remarkable relationship is sensitive to environmental conditions – particularly temperature. When water temperatures rise above 29 degrees, the zoox. become toxic to the polyps and get kicked out. Without the zoox., we see the polyp’s white skeleton, which is known as coral bleaching; a sign it is stressed and unwell. Climate change is the number one threat to the long term health of our Great Barrier Reef. Each of us can help the Reef by reducing our carbon footprint.

things to do BOWEN

MUST SEE

THE BIG MANGO At Bowen’s southern entrance on the Bruce Highway, keep an eye out for the famous ‘Big Mango’ which is located at the Bowen Visitor Information Centre. An excellent photo opportunity, at 10 metres tall, this mango statue is indeed the largest in the world! Bowen is famous for growing large numbers of juicy, golden mangoes. Ask at the Information Centre for the 100% Bowen mango sorbet. It is a totally healthy, utterly delicious treat!

MUST DO

GO FOR A SWIM AT HORSESHOE BAY With soft-as-silk white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water, Horseshoe Bay is the jewel in the Bowen crown. Ideal for swimming, it also features a nearby coral reef, perfect for snorkelling straight off the beach. Horseshoe Bay is a perfect place to stay with a variety of accommodation options including the 4.5 star Coral Cove Resort. Stop for a bite at the Meraki Whitsubdays and indulge in some rock scampering across the scenic bays.

MUST TRY

FISH AND CHIPS FROM BIRD’S FISH BAR There is no better place than Bowen to experience fresh, locally caught seafood straight off the trawler. As the fishing boats come in with their catch in the morning you can be assured the local seafood restaurants are serving it up that afternoon. Bird’s Fish Bar is located at Bowen Marina and offers a true taste of the Whitsundays with their ocean to beach experience. Dine in at their restaurant for magnificent marina views, especially at sunset. Or, grab a takeaway and head down to the beach for a picnic or sit with your legs swinging off one of the marina docks.

WHAT’S IN THE AUSTRALIAN TASTING PLATTER?

If you are visiting Australia, especially North Queensland this is a must try! Buffalo rissoles, Emu chipolatas, salt water crocodile tail fillet and kangaroo loin. Served with a creamy chilli garlic sauce and red wine gravy and of course chips and salad. WHAT DOES CROCODILE TASTE LIKE?

We think it’s a mixture of prawns and chicken. It has a prawn texture but a fishy / chicken flavor. It’s really nice and sweet. WHAT DOES KANGAROO TASTE LIKE?

Kangaroo has a much stronger gamey flavor to it, really tasty if you love red meat. WHEN CAN WE COME?

AIRLIE APARTMENTS

1, 2 & 3 Bedroom Holiday Apartments

WHERE ARE AIRLIE APARTMENTS LOCATED? This was our first visit to Airlie Beach and we were thrilled to discover everything was in walking distance. The apartments are perfectly positioned overlooking Abell Point Marina and a short five minute walk into town. We were close to the lively town centre but far enough away to enjoy the quiet sanctuary when we returned home in the evening.

WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE? There are 15 apartments in total ranging from 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms. For a little extra you can book poolside rooms or even the Superior Ocean View apartment. If you are on a budget, however, all the apartments are affordable yet comfortable and that’s why we chose Airlie Apartments. We took a one-bedroom garden view apartment which suited our budget and well-surpassed our expectations. Our apartment was spacious, light and airy with a comfortable lounge, flat screen T.V., a fully equipped kitchen which had been recently renovated with new appliances and air-conditioning throughout. We also had our own private verandah which quickly became our favourite place to sit as it had a partial sea view which was another hidden extra we didn’t expect!

WHAT FACILITIES ARE ON OFFER? Free Wi-Fi is available in all the apartments. Onsite under cover car parking for all guests and if you have a small boat, there is space to keep it onsite if you are out boating. There is a large shaded swimming-pool which is the social heart of the apartment complex. The pool overlooks Abell Point Marina and there are bbq facilities with comfortable seating for large groups. The atmosphere was light and friendly and it was easy to chat to other holiday makers.

SUNLIT WATERS

P

eter and Sandra Wilson are from Tasmania and have been retired for ten years. During this time they have travelled extensively overseas. When they were looking for an Australian holiday where they could relax and unwind, a friend suggested they might like the Whitsundays. “Our friend suggested Sunlit Waters as they had been going back every year for more than 13 years and couldn’t recommend it highly enough,” said Peter. “Fortunately we followed their advice and discovered this little piece of paradise,” agreed Sandra. This is the second year in a row that Peter and Sandra have spent their holiday at Sunlit Waters in Airlie Beach, Gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. We caught up with them to find out more about their experience. Tell us about the accommodation at Sunlit Waters: We stayed in a studio apartment, which is spacious and very well equipped with everything you need to be self-sufficient. The room is spotlessly clean with comfortable beds and a weekly full clean provided. There is a semi private balcony with a fabulous view over Abell Point Marina and a brilliant view of Airlie Sunsets.

62

Extra Services? Sunlit Waters has the ability to book numerous tours and activities for the same price as local tour desks. Fiona and Chris have excellent local knowledge and can recommend some great experiences and adventures, having been on many themselves. Location? Sunlit Waters is located only a short walk from Airlie Beach town centre, far enough away from the Main Street to be very relaxing and peaceful at night. It is situated on the crest of Airlie Crescent with the best views in Airlie Beach. It is the perfect location from which to explore the local area. We enjoyed a scenic helicopter flight to Whitehaven Beach with ample time to view the scenery of the outer islands by air. We also took a day trip to Hamilton Island which is just a short ferry ride away. Sunlit Waters is a short walk to Saturday Markets located at the foreshore where you can purchase fresh local produce. After 2 years of holidaying at Sunlit Waters we are still discovering fantastic local restaurants with a variety of international cuisines.

How are the facilities?

Tell us about your hosts:

Sunlit Waters provide laundry facilities, an outdoor clothesline, bbq area and a swimming pool with a marvellous view of the Marina.

Fiona and Chris made our stay so enjoyable right from the outset. They are so accommodating and do little extras to ensure your stay is enjoyable.

We would definitely recommend Sunlit Waters to family and friends for the amazing location, outstanding amenities and great value for money. Fiona and Chris are so friendly and welcoming to all their guests. It has a feeling of home away from home and a great place to escape the Tasmanian winter. So much so, we have booked again for next year!

This means that when you’re watching the sunrise from this location you will be part of the first group of people in Australia to see the first rays of sunshine spread across the horizon, marking the start a new day. It’s time to set your alarms and grab a takeaway coffee from a local café and hit the beach. Dig your bare toes into the cool sand and listen to the waves gently crash to shore in the misty morning light. The thoughtfully styled guest suites give a modern nod to Byron luxe living with mid-century aspect design. individual spaces have been designed to enhance your stay in Byron Bay; with light filled private decks complete with cane hanging chairs, a refreshing plunge pool and a poolside relaxation deck. We had the pleasure of staying three nights in the private SALT suite.

WHAT WAS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

Each of the private suites have been individually styled to reflect the Byron lifestyle, with features including hanging cane chairs on your private deck to comfortable sitting areas with a selection of books to read. Our SALT suite was adorned in luxurious comfort, with a wonderfully soft king-sized bed with gorgeous linen and a spacious light-drenched bathroom with Carrara marble tiles and a monsoon shower. The suite was beautifully furnished with highend style and includes a kitchenette with fridge and sink to keep food and beverages cool during a hot Byron day. the rest and relaxation you crave while on vacation. A shared plunge pool with sun loungers is available to guests at Bask & Stow as a quiet place to cool off, relax and reflect. Given there are only four suites at this boutique accommodation, it’s not difficult to find time in the day to have the pool to yourself. Off-street parking is also available if you have a private vehicle. What I personally loved most about staying at Bask & Stow was the supreme comfort and luxurious touches. The bed was one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept on, I felt as though I was wrapped in a cloud of comfort every night. My own private deck with wooden table and hanging cane chair was a fabulous place to work or relax with a gentle sea breeze. I looked forward to the monsoon shower at the end of the day, where I could wash away the salt of the day and look forward to tucking myself into bed. WHERE IS BASK & STOW LOCATED?

The boutique accommodation is tucked at the end of a private laneway to ensure tranquility, yet the location is ideally located only 5 minutes’ walk to Byron’s beautiful beaches and the centre of town. Delicious treats and excellent coffee are a short stroll away. Bask & Stow is located at 40 Marvell Lane (access via Cowper St), between Marvell and Carlyle Streets, Byron Bay. As there is also a Marvell Street in Byron, it’s important to ensure your GPS is leading you to the correct location.
