THE FESTIVAL WILL SEE AIRLIE BEACH COME ALIVE FROM AUGUST 5 TO 14 WITH A 10-DAY ENTERTAINMENT EXTRAVAGANZA INCLUDING STREET PARTIES, LIVE MUSIC, CARNIVAL RIDES, MARKET STALLS, FIREWORKS AND PLENTY OF FREE, FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES. Now in its 16th year, the festival celebrates what it means to live in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef with thousands of people enjoying events throughout the town, including the Main Street foreshore and lagoon, with a backdrop of the Coral Sea and Whitsunday Islands. The free fireworks on the foreshore kick off the fun on Friday night, with market stalls, carnival rides and food and drink on offer. The hugely popular Rotary Street Parade and the Revvin’ the Reef Car Show are the highlights of Saturday, while the Telstra Family Fun Day on Sunday offers lots of free, family-friendly activities.
The festival, which is run solely by volunteers, also includes art installations, a wearable art competition, sand sculpting, a recyclable craft regatta, a comedy gala, fashion, movie nights, reef experiences and helicopter joy flights. “The festival is for all ages and aims to entertain people in a safe, familyfriendly environment,” event organiser Margie Murphy said.
