WHAT'S ON
play MELBOURNE CUP
AIRLIE BEACH FESTIVAL OF MUSIC
MACKAY
WHITSUNDAYS
TUESDAY 3RD NOVEMBER 2015
5TH - 8TH NOVEMBER 2015
Melbourne Cup is Australia’s major thoroughbred horse race. Marketed as “the race that stops a nation”, it is a 3,200 metre race for three-year-olds held the first week of November every year. You don’t have to be in Melbourne to join in with the fun though – this is the one day a year where everyone takes the afternoon off! People from all around the nation put on their best race day outfits and head to their local bar or restaurant to place a few bets, enjoy a spot of early afternoon drinking, watch the fashions on the field, and of course enjoy the race!
The Airlie Beach Festival of Music is the only waterfront music festival at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Set in the most beautiful tropical location in Australia, the festival offers an entertaining weekend for over 30s who want to throw their cares away and kick back, soak up the setting, listen to quality live music and enjoy friendly people and good times. Featuring internationally and nationally recognised musicians, festival goers can buy a three day pass and see 74 bands performing in many of the quaint bars, marinas and beachside venues around Airlie Beach and three main concerts under the massive marquee on the edge of the Coral Sea at the Whitsunday Sailing Club. This tropical tourist town turns on the northern charm and glorious November weather for a perfect party weekend in paradise.
The first race was held in 1861 over two miles (3.219 km) but was shortened to 3,200 metres (1.988 mi) in 1972 when Australia adopted the metric system. This reduced the distance by 18.688 metres (61.312 ft), and Rain Lover’s 1968 race record of 3:19.1 was accordingly adjusted to 3:17.9. The present record holder is the 1990 winner Kingston Rule with a time of 3:16.3. This is the most prestigious race day of the year and the winner goes down in the record books for all time. But in good old Aussie tradition, Melbourne Cup is a good excuse for a celebration, so wherever you are in North Queensland put on your best outfit and head for your nearest pub!
The festival showcases over 200 musicians and headline acts include famous 70s UK rock band 10cc, American Toni Childs, Scottish singersongwriter Sandi Thom, Richard Clapton, Wendy Matthews, The Black Sorrows, Angry Anderson with the James Southwell Band, Bondi Cigars, Phil Emmanuel Band, Mason Rack Band and House of Shem.

DID YOU KNOW –Dingoes don’t bark, they only howl!
dingo
While normally you would be advised to stay away from a dingo, at Billabong you have the chance to get up close and say hello to our three trained dingoes. You can even sit next to one, get your photo and have a pat. King, Killari and Allira have been with Billabong Sanctuary for over five years and have been an integral and popular part of the sanctuary’s displays and shows. King is the ‘typical’ rust coloured dingo that most people are familiar with. However Killari and Allira, who are sisters, are the rarer white coloration and people are always amazed at how soft their fur is! Dingoes are one of Australia’s most controversial and misunderstood animals. Billabong Sanctuary not only provides the opportunity to interact with a dingo in a safe environment, but also provides education about these amazing animals and the vital role that they play in Australian ecosystems.
Billabong Sanctuary Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and, to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please and, as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 3 p.m. as well as a 12:45 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m. At wildlife encounters you can hold a koala or hug a wombat and have a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile.
Where other countries have animals like lions, tigers, bears and wolves, in Australia we have the dingo. Dingoes prey on animals such as kangaroos and wallabies and help keep their populations healthy and their numbers in check.
Wildlife talks and interpretative experiences feature all day. Don’t miss the most popular feeding show, where the sanctuary’s largest crocodile, Bully, will leap from the water in an amazing show of strength to take a snap at his lunch. Hear the tremendous jaws snap shut as Bully lunges for food, fed by one of the experienced rangers. Bully is 4.5m long and weighs in excess of 500kgs. To see him in action is an unforgettable nature experience.
Dingoes also play an important role in keeping down the number of feral animals such as rabbits, cats, goats and foxes.
Take the opportunity to feed one of the snappy freshwater crocodiles. Only $10 to experience the action.
Dingoes are renowned for their intelligence, agility and ability to survive in the toughest of conditions. Dingoes can be found in environments ranging from cold alpine regions, to tropical rainforests and deserts. They have characteristics of both wolves and dogs and, like wolves, they form family based packs and howl to communicate. However like dogs they can form strong bonds with humans. The dingo show is on each day at 2.30pm and following the presentation by the ranger the dingoes are brought out to meet their audience, but watch out - you might just get a friendly lick on the cheek!
At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform you about many misconceptions people may have about different animals. One of the most misunderstood native animals in Australia is the dingo. See a different side to this magnificent creature and then pose for a photo and pat the friendly dingoes. Some of the friendliest inhabitants of Billabong Sanctuary are the kangaroos. Be sure to grab a bag of animal feed to experience them eating out of your hand. Be aware, they do slobber! A heart-warming experience for young and old and a great photo opportunity with one of Australia’s icons. Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

Whitsunday Coast Airport to grow the region Getting to and from the Whitsundays has never been so easy with the Whitsunday Coast Airport offering an ever expanding schedule of direct flights to and from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Domestic flights to the Whitsunday Coast Airport are consistently close to full capacity and this looks set to continue with predictions domestic numbers will treble over the next decade. The sustained growth is paving the way for even greater passenger growth into the future, especially as the airport enters its next phase, that of a joint venture expansion with the potential for servicing the international market and of becoming an international export hub. The Whitsunday Coast Airport (wholly owned by Whitsunday Regional Council) is one of the most significant pieces of infrastructure in the region and the vision of Council is to drive the airport’s expansion to deliver economic and tourism growth into the future. Whitsunday Regional Council Mayor Jenny Whitney says that the airport is a fantastic community asset for the broader region and the only facility with the capability to grow exponentially and support growth across the full spectrum of economic sectors. “Council’s vision to develop the Whitsunday Coast Airport International Export Hub and Master Plan is now our primary focus as it has the capacity to secure the future prosperity of our region, “This hub would deliver to the region, the infrastructure required to facilitate growth not only to the tourism industry, but to our mining and agriculture sectors as well.” Mayor Whitney said. But it’s the flow on effects that are truly remarkable. A development of this scale will have positive ripples throughout the entire region. “Improved facilities means more flights and more competition amongst the airlines, “This will be substantial benefit to our residents who commute south for business or leisure, but will also propel the Whitsundays into the top tier of tourism destinations on the globe,” Mayor Whitney said. The potential for an export hub based around agriculture adds further weight to a joint venture proposal and plays to the strength of why it makes sense for investors to have faith in the region - No other region has the natural attributes of the Whitsundays. “We are a place of significant tourism potential, but when you take into consideration our fertile agricultural lands, and our proximity to resources, you begin to see quite clearly, that the Whitsunday region is a stand out, “Fulfilling the Whitsunday Coast Airport Master Plan will create jobs and broaden our economy. It’s an investment that will ensure our region is primed for take-off.” Mayor Whitney said. The initial development would include lengthening the runway and expanding the adjoining apron in order to cater to long-haul international flights. An expansion of the domestic terminal facility and car park areas would also be undertaken in this first phase which is projected to be delivered within a five year time frame. “We are excited about the possibilities the Whitsunday Coast Airport Master Plan recognises and also know that without the development of adequate routes, connections and capacity, the Whitsunday region will not meet its economic potential.” Mayor Whitney said.
Fast Facts • Whitsunday Regional Council in-conjunction with the State Government of Queensland have invested in excess of $14M in capital improvements at the Whitsunday Coast Airport over the past 4 years.
• A proposed joint venture project would grow tourism expenditure by $300M per annum, creating over 2000 new jobs. • The Whitsunday Coast Airport delivered its best result on record for the 2014/2015 financial year with 282,500 passengers utilising the facility and giving an increase of 16.7% on the previous year.
• The forecast for the 2015/16 year is for passenger numbers to reach 360,000 which would represent a 77% growth since 2010.

Capers on the Esplanade Where Capers on the Esplanade is in the heart of Airlie Beach, with an unrivalled location at the hub of the esplanade. This popular Airlie restaurant is the signature dining experience of the Airlie Beach Hotel. Choose from a range of seating locations, including comfortable couches al-fresco or relax in air-conditioned comfort from within the chic interior.
Burgers and pizza are still on the menu for dinner, along with refined options including oysters, Whitsunday’s snapper fillet or rib fillet on the bone.
Being directly opposite the main beach, Capers on the Esplanade is the perfect place to indulge in a delicious breakfast before you stroll the Saturday morning markets. In the evening, the hub of the esplanade comes alive with a buzzing atmosphere, where the indoor / outdoor flow of Capers comes into its own.
Mains range from $19.90 to $35.90 while burgers start at $14.90 and pizzas at $17.50.
Capers on the Esplanade is open for breakfast from 7 a.m. daily, lunch from noon and dinner from 5:30 p.m. All day dining is available Saturday and Sunday.
What you’ll find there The vibe of Capers changes from morning to evening. Breakfast is a casual affair with mouthwatering munchables, ranging from Boston Baked Beans served with pork belly to toasted banana bread with maple syrup and mascarpone. If you’re feeling mighty hungry, try The Works big brekkie or the Kimberley Red Sirloin with eggs and hollandaise. Feel the ocean breeze as you gaze upon the sun dancing on the water, then try to decide what you’d like to sink your teeth into for lunch. Options are seamlessly endless from a Summer Sunset burger to a BBQ Hog Fest pizza.

Why we love it! The transition from casual day to elegant evening. The enviable position on the Esplanade, opposite Airlie’s famous beach and Saturday morning markets. The generous proportions are evident through breakfast, lunch and dinner; only surpassed by the quality of every mouthful. Mr Bones On The Lagoon Where Mr Bones is located right in the heart of Airlie Beach, a handy thirty second walk from the Airlie Beach lagoon. When I visit I like sitting on one of the high stools looking out through the large open window at people jumping and splashing in the lagoon with the sparkling Coral Sea glimmering just behind. It’s a wonderfully vibrant place to be with a lively open plan atmosphere, funky urban feel and the pleasure of friendly, efficient table service.
What you’ll find there Open for breakfast lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday Mr Bones offers a modern twist and some deeply delicious alternatives to popular classics. Their tapas menu is vast and sumptuous, I recommend you try the Spanish mackerel spring rolls with orange, soy and ginger dipping sauce or the lamb croquettes with smoked garlic and tomato salsa. Mr Bones is also well-known for serving the best thin-crust pizza in town and when you visit make sure you ask for one of their famous desert burgers – made with a brioche bun, orange jelly (that makes the cheese), a chocolate patty plus raspberry sauce instead of ketchup - they even have fried custard chips on the side – every big kids dream!
Cost You can grab a pizza from between $18-26 and everything on the tapas menu is between $14 and $20, nothing on the menu is over $26.
Why we love it! It’s the quirky and cool, effortless charm that keeps customers coming back for more, not to mention the innovative must-try items on their constantly evolving menu. The owners and staff go that extra mile to make sure everyone has an experience they will remember. The place is brimming full most nights – they can accommodate walk-in customers but to be safe, I recommend you book.

HORSESHOE BAY CAFÉ, BOWEN
ANCHOR BAR, AIRLIE BEACH
Where
Where
Horseshoe Bay is without doubt one of the most beautiful bays in North Queensland, if not Australia! A stunning cove with soft sandy rocks, you can climb and snorkeling is just an easy wade into the water. It is a kid friendly destination with a carpark close by and Horseshoe Bay café is just a thirty seconds walk from the beach. This cute, casual beachside café and restaurant offers coffees, cakes, milkshakes, ice-creams, breakfasts and lunches. It is also open Friday and Saturday nights when it transforms into a spectacular evening venue with dinner under the stars and the sound of the waves splashing to shore in the background. What could be more romantic than that?
Anchor Bar is one of Airlie Beach’s best kept secrets. Popular with locals, this fabulous location has one of the most jaw-dropping views in Airlie Beach. A short walk from the main-street up to Golden Orchid Drive and Whitsunday Terraces Resort, Anchor Bar offers great meals, live oyster shucking on weekends, a fabulous swimming-pool open to all guests, free pool table and, of course, the stunning view of the Coral Sea.
What you’ll find there There is plenty of choice on the menu. I tried the Reef and Beef one night and it is made with rib fillet topped with scallops, prawns and calamari in a garlic cream sauce. Delish! If you are there on a morning, you must try their breakfasts. They are enormous! Horseshoe Bay Café also bakes its own pies, pastries and quiche fresh on the premises. They make a great light lunch with a petite salad and homemade dressing. Horseshoe Bay café is just across the road from the beach and the friendly staff don’t seem to mind sandy feet entering the café. There is lots of comfortable seating and a covered area to give sun drenched bodies a rest from the sun.
Cost Excellent value for money. The main meals are from $15 and their classic seafood basket is the most expensive at only $24. Breakfasts start from $10 and their big breakky is $19. Dinner mains range from $16 to $37.
Why we love it It reflects the natural simplicity of Horseshoe Bay perfectly. It has a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a constant flow of happy holiday-makers looking for refreshment. Get a cake and coffee for your 3 o’clock stop, treat the kids to one of their famous milkshakes or grab one of their enormous big Brekkies. This little gem is even licensed so why not get your holiday started with your favourite alcoholic beverage!
What you’ll find there Open from 12pm to late every day, Anchor Bar has outdoor seating on the deck, an indoor dining area and also serves food down by the pool. The menu is constantly evolving and offers a selection of full meals, share platters and light snacks. I love the steaming hotpot of New Zealand mussels which come with a choice of sauce – thai green curry, Napoli or garlic cream. Another must-try is the pork belly made with a top secret coca cola reduction. Simply delicious! The huge party platters are great value for money too and can be catered to suit any group size and any budget. They come as a selection of hot and cold meats, cheeses or seafood.
Cost Prices start from $7 and there is nothing over $28. Other items on the menu include sizzling steaks, grilled coral trout, creamy fettuccine and Anchor Bar’s famously stacked burger. All are great quality, great value for money with fresh produce bought from local suppliers.
Why we love it The owners, Josh and Leah, are the sort of people that meet you once and remember what you drink the next time you come to the bar. There is a real community atmosphere at Anchor Bar. atrons share the pool table and regularly start tournaments open to anyone who would like to play. Live music plays all weekend with local musicians creating the perfect ambience plus live oyster shuckers visit each table offering expert knowledge and recommending the best combination of flavours for a truly amazing oyster experience!

Naturally delicious A landscape carved by glaciers, where waterfalls cascade into crystal clear spring water. Where shimmering lakes are nestled in granite crevasses covered in ancient rainforest. The country which is renowned for the clearest spring water in the world, is also home to the most luscious cream, produced from cows which roam verdant pastures. So it’s only natural that this country produces some of the most delicious ice cream in the world. It’s New Zealand and you can sample some of the world’s best ice cream, right here in Airlie Beach at New Zealand Natural. New Zealand Natural combine naturally fresh ingredients with the purest cream to produce lip-licking taste sensations. Classic favourites such as chocolate and vanilla are staples, however with 30 flavours on offer, the hardest part can be deciding what to choose! Try the refreshing zing of lemon and lime sorbet, or indulge in a creamy butterscotch walnut. And of course it wouldn’t be a Kiwi ice cream without a scoop of the famous hokey pokey! For a healthy treat, try the delicious frozen yoghurt or the ingenious fruit flow. At 96 percent fat free they also contain probiotics to help with digestion. Choose your fruit,

BAIT TO PLATE! The lowdown on making it a reality
For the visitors to the Whitsundays who intend going fishing as part of the experience, this area is a fishing paradise, however, like so many spots, a little local knowledge goes a long, long way. Clearly our restaurant is ready, willing and able to be of service if you miss out and we also work with most of the local charter operators and will cook your catch of the day as a great way to end your trip. We started this popular service 11 years ago and it is now a real feature of most of the charter operators. If you are going to tow up your own boat, or hire one here, I can pass on a few simple tips which will help your pre trip planning. First is seasonality. Know that barramundi, King Threadfin and other river/estuary species will bite best in the warmer months and the region is very well serviced by a great ramp off Conway Beach road and into the Proserpine River. Conventional wisdom is that the river fishes best on the smaller (neap) tides and a day or 2 after and while this is a pretty fair rule of thumb if you are targeting the usual deep snaggy runs I have had great success up on the top of the flats on the big tides and often have the river pretty much to myself. Pick a building spring tide in March and sit up on the flats around 20 27 51.91, 148 42 0096 on the last 2 hours of the flood and first half hour of the ebb tides. Using live mullet for bait, this spot can be barramundi mayhem.

If it’s blue water action you are after, then you really want neap tides just starting to build with calm seas. Spring time is often perfect weather for blue water fishing with plenty of Spanish mackerel, Nannygai and Coral trout all “on the chew”. Little black marlin are also starting to show up in numbers for the game fishing crowd. A fish to catch and let go, not eat please). The simple fact with mackerel is to just travel wide enough to find the clean blue water. At times this will be as close in as Pioneer Rocks but all the usual hotspots like Nara, Dolphin Point, the Cones and Mackerel Bay, all the way out to Deloraine and Leper Shoals, will all fire in clean water conditions. I travel away with a group of mates to Weipa every year and we have learnt to book our holidays each year around the right tides. If I had to give a single tip about when to fish the Whitsundays, it would be all about the tides. From about 2 days before the first quarter of the moon till 2 days after. If you get a patch of calm weather around these tides, you are just about a certainty. Have a chat to any of our local tackle shops when you hit town. They are always happy to help. Alternatively, drop in for a rum and bring a map and I will point you in the right direction. Cheers Kev

Sundowner Cruises WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR? The atmosphere, watching the sunset and then Airlie Beach lighting up at dusk. Sundowner gets people together, from the young and old, to groups celebrating. Wings Adventure Park
EXPERIENCE THE 4WD ADVENTURE PARK
WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR? What a great tour to do with kids over 8 years of age! The best part of the tour is the endless laughter as two people jump on board their own all terrain vehicle to drive through obstacles and challenge areas. The tour features both man made and natural exploration tracks and I have to warn you about the awesome MUDDDDD!!!!!!!! The Wings Adventure Park is one of the newest tourist attractions on the mainland in the Whitsundays and it’s such a unique land based attraction. Nestled in the Whitsunday Hinterland, this 470 acre park has been custom designed to create a tourism experience that you’ll talk about for years!
WHERE DID YOU GO? The courtesy bus collects you from Base Backpackers in Airlie Beach. You then take a 40 minute drive into the hinterland with the tour guide driving the bus and playing an instructional video guiding you through what to expect while at the Wings 4WD Adventure Park. It even covers safety and operation of the buggies so by the time you arrive you’re feeling confident and ready to get started. The guide gives you a brief overview of the 10km of trails as you select your helmet and buggy to get ready for action! The buggies seat two passengers and the tour takes you through awesome Aussie bushland after cruising for a while you arrive at the man made challenge area ; a series of obstacles designed to have you laughing hysterically as you master the course. You then head off through dry creek beds, gullies and up a mountain to a wicked lookout over the entire hinterland before heading down into the central mud pit. Who would have thought mud would be so much fun?!!
Absolutely. The owners have built this park with a passion for providing an awesome experience for their customers and the location pays homage to all things Aussie with the bushlands featuring kangaroos, wallabies and koalas hiding in the gum trees!

The Living Reef
DAYDREAM ISLAND
WHY VISIT THE LIVING REEF? Daydream Island’s Living Reef is one of the world’s largest man-made living coral reef lagoons, home to many unique and fascinating creatures. The south and north lagoon hold more than 1.5 million litres of water, home to 140 species of colourful marine fish, 82 species of coral and 15 species of invertebrates such as starfish and sea cucumbers. This allows visitors the chance to see the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef from the safety of this controlled marine wonderland. This tour is ideal for families with young children and also for those with a fear of the ocean but who still want to witness the beautiful creatures that live in it. Nemoville Lagoon featuring a number of Clownfish is a favourite with fans of Finding Nemo.
WHERE IS IT LOCATED?
of visitors. There are eight types of rays in the Living Reef including the huge estuary and shovelnose rays.
WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES DOES THE LIVING REEF OFFER? The Living Reef holds free educational feeding sessions twice a day, every day at 10 a.m. at the northern end of the island, and 12:30 p.m. at the southern end of the island. The Living Reef Ranger program gives children the opportunity to participate in a guided fish feed, get close to baby bamboo sharks, feed the giant barramundi and walk among curious baby stingrays. Viewing the Living Reef in the evening is a very different experience. At nighttime, the reef comes alive in a rainbow of psychedelic colours ranging from
neon pink to neon green. Some corals that appear dull brown in the daylight appear to glow in the dark in vibrant shades of green, blue, red and orange. The Living Reef Actinic Light above the main lagoon is turned on from 6 p.m. until midnight each night, to display a fascinating kaleidoscope of colour.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THE LIVING REEF TO A FRIEND? How could you not? I could spend all day staring at the beautiful creatures in the Living Reef, from the delicate starfish to the weird and wacky colourful corals. The opportunity to stand in the lagoon with stingrays was a tick off my bucket list. The children adored the experience too, it was a very educational way to keep them entertained.
The Living Reef is located on idyllic Daydream Island in the Whitsundays. Daydream Island is one of the closest islands to the mainland, making it a perfect day-trip destination to view the wonders of the Living Reef.
WHAT TOURS ARE AVAILABLE? Getting up close and personal with a number of marine fish is an unforgettable experience. Taking part in the Living Reef’s Stingray Splash tour gives you the unique opportunity to walk into the reef itself to pat and hand-feed these magnificent creatures for 45 minutes. The stingrays have been de-barbed so every precaution has been taken to ensure the safety

Each vessel takes a maximum of 25 – 32 passengers on the Whitehaven Beach tours, with small groups allowing you to enjoy the tropical paradise away from the crowds for a more exclusive and intimate experience.
Ocean Rafting offer two Whitehaven Beach tours, Northern Exposure and Southern Lights. The main difference between the two tours is that the Northern Exposure has more snorkelling time and the Southern Lights offers more beach time. On both tours you have the opportunity to observe the rare estuarine stingrays and ghost crabs in their natural habitat at Hill Inlet, join the guided tour to Hill Inlet Lookout and then enjoy a buffet lunch on the beautiful white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach. Spend time snorkelling at one of Ocean Rafting’s secret locations to view an unbelievable array of marine creatures. All snorkel equipment and flotation devices are included, as well as friendly guides who are able to assist beginners. In one tour, you get to experience the iconic beauty of Hill Inlet, spend time lazing on world-famous Whitehaven Beach and snorkel colourful coral reefs in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It really is like three separate tours in one!
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS TOUR TO A FRIEND? Absolutely. The professionalism and sense of humour from the crew were world-class. Travelling in the inflatable vessel means you get up close to the water to see much more on the way to Whitehaven Beach. Everything you could possibly want to experience in the Whitsundays is featured on this tour, with ample time to enjoy the breathtaking views.

Cape Gloucester Resort WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF CAPE GLOUCESTER RESORT? Cape Gloucester will leave you speechless. I’ve been coming to this beach front resort since the original opening (at least10 years ago) and it’s simply beautiful to stay in it now that’s it’s all grown up. The gardens have found their roots, the cabins and wall-less restaurant, ‘The Oar’, have settled into their environment. The native wildlife loves making friends and the resort has found it’s target market!
WHERE IS IT LOCATED? Cape G is located at the end of one of the best scenic drives that locals recommend to visiting friends and family. This is where we go on our weekends folk so, if it’s not on your list, a visit to Cape Gloucester should be! Located 40 minutes north of Airlie Beach follow the map to Hydeaway Bay and take the dirt road to the resort entrance.
WHY CHOOSE THIS ACCOMMODATION? The Whitsundays has such a variety of accommodation experiences on offer. Staying beach front should be on your bucket list while visiting the region. Our magical sunrises and sunsets and that feeling of sand in your toes... you simply slow down in small boutique accommodation like this, and, coupled with the sensational Oar Restaurant, you have the best of both worlds; a choice of sensational lunches and dinners at the restaurant or you can provision and prepare your food, with your own private BBQ or microwave oven, in your semi self-contained cabin.
WHAT DID IT COST AND WHAT DID IT INCLUDE? I stayed one night in the 2 Bedroom Beachfront Cabin ($260 per night - midweek rate for four people).

Every moment I was in the cabin I mentally started planning when I’d be able to come back for an entire week. They just have this Robinson Crusoe vibe as you face the ocean in what feels like a deserted paradise. However, on the interior they feature all of the mod cons you need to settl in for a private holiday.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO A FRIEND? I constantly recommend Cape Gloucester to friends. If you don’t have a night to spare, head out to the resort for a day trip, or kick back and relax with live music every Sunday from 1pm. The atmosphere is brilliant... BUT draw straws on who is the designated driver as I guarantee once you arrive you won’t want to leave!

TOURS AND TRANSPORT SERVICES See the Mackay region through the eyes of a local expert by booking one of the many tours available. Visit the Mackay Visitor Information Centre on Nebo Road for more information and friendly advice.
WEATHER
Cable wakeboarding is wakeboarding without the boat! An overhead cable-ski system pulls you around the lake for hours of fun. It is perfect for beginners looking to learn and great for others who want to practice new tricks. This is an action-packed day out for a group of friends, family or even a couple looking for a bit of adventure.
Mackay Region Botanic Islands Take a walk through the stunning tropical gardens right next to the Pioneer River in Mackay. Soak up the sounds of indigenous bird-life and learn more about native Australian flora and fauna. There are 3km of walking and cycling trails with a café and gallery on-site overlooking the beautiful lagoons where you can have a cup of coffee and admire the views.
Caneland Shopping Centre The Mackay region enjoys summer-like warmth year-round, with an average maximum daily temperature of 32 degrees Celsius in the summer and 23 degrees Celsius in the winter. Being a tropical city, it experiences wet and dry months. The most rainfall occurs between December and March. However, even during the wet season the majority of days are still filled with periods of hot sunshine. Cyclones frequently form in the Coral Sea during the wet season and can cause severe damage to parts of the Queensland Coast. However, these are well broadcast on major television and radio stations giving ample warning.
Get your shopping fix at the Caneland Shopping Centre – the biggest shopping centre in the Mackay region with more than 110 specialty and service stores. The shopping centre is conveniently located right in the middle of the city with large department stores and small boutique stores plus a huge variety of eateries.
Weather in October/November Average temperatures in Mackay at this time of year are 23-25 degrees, getting hotter towards the end of November. Rainfall can also increase as we get closer to December and the beginning of the rainy season. Evenings are getting warmer and staying light for longer – perfect for a good old Aussie bbq!
MUST-DO MACKAY Zipline through rainforest canopy in Finch Hatton Gorge Discover the waterfalls of the Finch Hatton Gorge on a morning bush walk, then see the rainforest from a different angle.
