Nowhere is that more true issue, the Outdoor Home Team digs into why it’s better to select composites over traditional wood decking in the first place, as well as uncovering some details on three major manufacturers in our region. Moving on to the second question, we take a look at what exactly goes into pulling off an amazing outdoor kitchen. Looking to the folks at Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet for their expertise, we cover the basics—and not so basics—of designing and installing the perfect outdoor kitchen for your home and family. Speaking of family, designing outdoor living spaces that are visually pleasant and fun – for kids – can be almost impossible. In this issue, we cover some ideas to help you create that balance. We end off with a project feature that beautifully transforms a NY backyard into a resort fit for entertaining and relaxing. With a clean and crisp, yet still comfortable style this masterpiece features a custom gunite pool and spa, custom pergola, full smart home automation, and a full outdoor kitchen for cooking poolside (which may come sooner than usual based on this super warm weather!). DECK

Choosing the best material for your new deck project can be a tough task. Here, we take a look at why you should say goodbye to traditional wood and how to choose the right composite decking. TEXT BY JAKE GARDINER

SPRING 2016

WE ARE LIVING IN TIMES of abundant choice. Paint comes in thousands of color, coffee-shops have billboard-sized menus, and even buying laundry detergent is starting to pose a challenge; Tide is available in almost 30 different variations. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that decking options, like everything else, have grown exponentially over the last decade. In fact, research carried out by Imperial

Capital revealed that in 1999, only a mere 3% of residential decks were made from wood alternatives. Today, however, wood alternatives have jumped to 34% of household decking; apparently, a clear sign of the vast array of decking options available in the market.

WHAT IS COMPOSITE DECKING ANYWAY? Composite decking or wood-plastic composite (WPC) is not new; the technology is well over a century old. And although there are variations across products, composite decking is made from a mix of wood flour (ground and pulverized wood scraps) and plastic particles. As part of the standard manufacturing process, WPC decking boards are treated with preservatives that help ward off mildew, rot, and mold. The decking is imprinted with a range of textures and dyed in a host of colors, most of which aim to mirror genuine wood grains. Some manufacturers of composite decking are known to rely on plastics and virgin wood whereas others like Trex and TimberTech make extensive use of recycled material. Trex uses 95% recycled material which includes wood pellets, polyethylene bags, and sawdust. According to Trex.com, 1.5 billion plastic bags each year are used to make their composite products. Other manufacturers in the industry are committed to environmental concerns as well. TimberTech boasts that the wood flour used in their composite products is 100% post-industrially sources, helping to keep millions of pounds of waste out of landfills every year. Generally speaking, composite decking materials are resistant to the elements, dimensionally stable, and environmentally friendly. But let’s face it—it hasn’t been all peaches and roses since the adoption of composite decking into mainstream residential construction. Stung in recent years by complaints about performance failures, composite decking manufacturers are working to change consumer perception with a new class of products that aim to compete in line with exotic hardwoods. And it seems like today’s products are performing much better indeed. However, as leading manufacturers continue to push value and variety across materials and price point, the question we all beg to ask is this; how can the discerning consumer choose the best composite decking products for their home? Let’s take a look at three of the products you will typically find here in the NY/CT region.

TIMBERTECH This is a leading composite deck manufacturer that provides practical decking solutions designed for the value-conscious customer. If you are looking for a lifetime of little maintenance, then TimberTech’s line of products is your best shot. TimberTech makes a variety of goods including TimberTech XLM, a PVC decking, and six lines of composite decking with the two main choices being Reliabord and Legacy. Reliabord is entry-level; it comes in two colors and cannot be used with hidden fasteners like the Twin Finish and Legacy series can. Reliaboard offers a 25 year limited warranty, but doesn’t specifically cover mold and mildew and fading. The Legacy series is TimberTech’s top-tier line of cap stock decking that is capped on all four sides. It’s the most beautiful and realistic looking composite in TimberTech’s product line and is available in 4 colors. This line is protected by a 25-year fade and stain warranty.

TREX A manufacturer of high-performance wood-alternative decking, Trex offers three distinct decking collections. Trex offer 3 product lines—Select, Enhance, and Transcend—ranging from good to better to best, respectively. All products come with a 25-Year Limited Residential Fade & Stain Warranty. Trex offers the most complete product line which includes features like outdoor storage, pergolas, fencing, and even spiral stair solutions. If design options and flexibility are important to your project, Trex is a great choice. Trex also makes good, price competitive hidden fastener systems for use with its decking products.

AZEK Although Azek produces PVC decking—as opposed to true composite decking— we are including it in this article because it provides low-maintenance, stain-resistant, and scratch-resistant solutions to residential deck construction. Homeowners will find Azek products along side TimberTech and Trex at their local home center. Simply put, Azek decking is similar to composite decking with a few differences. PVC decking products like those from Azek offers increased fade and scratch protection and comes with a 30-year fade and stain warranty. Azek products can also be used in direct contact with water or increased moisture situations. Just be careful if your deck will be in full sun—this stuff can get hot under foot! At the end of the day, each manufacturer offers slightly different color choices and price points. Many experts say that these differences are very small and that the more important point of focus is the use of composites in the first place. The benefits of PVC and composite decking over traditional lumber are just too much to be ignored. Speak with an outdoor living construction specialist or visit your local home center or lumberyard for more information.

3 FARM TO TABLE IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

Home food production continues to grow in awareness and popularity with families. This means more raised beds and container gardening. Fruit trees and berries are particularly increasing in popularity. Consider dwarf fruit trees and espaliered fruit trees (these work even in small areas) for the fruit during summer and the beauty during the winter.

Trends for BIG planting style in 2016

text by Charles King Sadler, ASLA

SPRING 2016

LOVE FOR BEES AND OTHER POLLINATORS

There is a continued interest of planting pollinator attractor plants for bees, monarch butterflies, and other important pollinators of our food. As a result, homeowners are becoming more aware of beneficial environmental practices and putting them to use! Some popular ideas include organic gardening, composting, and permaculture. Also refraining from the use of herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers, and increased interest in native plants and organic fertilizers are big for 2016.

2

LET IT RAIN

Harvesting rainwater has been an increasingly growing trend for the last couple of years. A new hot interest is harvested gray water, in addition to rainwater. An easy (and impactful) way to incorporate this into your backyard is by creating rain gardens to detain runoff during storms.

4

STRUCTURES

Structures throughout your landscaping continue to play a major role. The traditional ones like bird baths, trellises, and arbors are still a go-to classic. For a twist, consider recycled objects and relics such as antique urns, ornaments, and corten (weathering) steel.

THE HIGHLINE IN YOUR GARDEN

The highline planting approach and palette are redefining what is beautiful in gardens. Imagine seed heads, dormant (or dead) perennials, and grasses left after growing season swaying in the breeze and coated with snow. With this trend, there is less doing and more allowing. For example, leave the perennials and grasses to be cut down in the late winter (before growing season) and left in place as mulch. There’s even a functional aspect since the spent perennials form a habitat and food for birds and insects in the winter. The bonus is it calls for a lot less maintenance. Some ideas include vines such as: Actinidia Kolomikta (kiwi vine, also in variegated form), Aristolochia Macrophylla (Dutchman’s pipe), many Clematis varieties, Hydrangea Anomala subspecies Petiolaris (climbing Hydrangea, also in variegated form) and Lonicera Semervirens (Native Trumpet Honeysuckle).

5

MATRIX PLANTING

If you haven’t increased your use of self-sustaining plants, then it’s a must attempt this year! Generally, these plantings (referred to as matrix planting) are native, drought tolerant, and quite disease resistant. This mixed approach helps to decrease lawn mowing, maintenance, and watering. It increases the habitat for pollinators and of course, beauty! Depending on the size of your space and other nearby landscaping elements (swimming pool, patio, etc.), there are many ways to implement matrix planting in your space. The formula for this matrix planting uses more than 50% filler plants such as ornamental grasses or ground covers. Inserted in this “matrix” are

16

SPRING 2016

seasonal display plants (15-20%) such as coneflowers and Liatris. Strategically planted within this framework are also architectural plants (5-10%); taller perennials such as Joe Pye Weed and ornamental shrubs and trees such as: Hydrangeas, re-blooming roses, Cotinus (smoke bush) and Sumac. Some ideas include using mixed perennial plantings with ornamental grasses (many native plants); perennials as ground cover; reduction or elimination of mulch; filler plants; architectural plants; four season interest; and bird and insect habitat.

THE PERFECT OUTDOOR KITCHEN Creating a beautiful and functional outdoor kitchen for your home is no easy task. We uncover the design approach of the experts and break it down into 3 sections.

photos: kalamazoo outdoor gourmet words: jackson finds

18

SPRING 2016

F

or many families, the kitchen is indeed the heart of the home - and this is no less true when that kitchen is just outside the backdoor. Our long-term affair with BBQs and the smoky flavors of grilled food, combined with the explosion of custom outdoor living spaces, has resulted in outdoor kitchen designs that are nothing short of spectacular (and helpful for our busy lives). The best outdoor kitchens today are comfortable, functional, and perfectly set-up for enter-

taining. And pulling one of these beauties together requires a lot of time, experience, and design and build expertise. Since the success of your outdoor kitchen heavily depends on choosing the right layout and appliances, it’s best to look to the professionals for help. So we’ve done just that with the folks at Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet. We’ve broken down the big design considerations into three sections: location, function, and equipment.

LOCATION

Deciding where to locate your new outdoor kitchen is often the first major planning decision to tackle. The proximity of your outdoor kitchen to your indoor kitchen is an important element that will determine things like what appliances to include and what features are critical to function. For instance, if the outdoor kitchen is located very close to the home, you may be able to forgo an outdoor refrigerator or include only cold water outside. Kitchens located farther away from the home will require more robust features to make outdoor entertaining easier. This distance relationship will also affect the installation costs of necessary utilities such as gas, electric, and water. Considering the overall traffic flow for your interconnected outdoor living spaces is also a big part of locating your outdoor kitchen. Guests must be able to comfortably walk from the kitchen space to the dining area, and in and out of the house. In doing so, it’s a great idea to access the wind patterns on your property when locating your grilling station. If placed incorrectly, prevailing winds can carry smoke towards guest seating areas or even back inside the home.

FUNCTIONALITY

When planning and designing an outdoor kitchen, achieving a high level of functionality is the most important goal. A kitchen that’s properly designed and built for efficient outdoor entertaining trumps a beautiful looking—but poorly performing—design layout every time. Much like an indoor

kitchen, being able to move effortlessly from one area to another helps create an enjoyable experience. The outdoor kitchen specialists at Kalamazoo Outdoor Gourmet, led by Russ Faulk, categorizes the sections of an outdoor kitchen into four different zones; the hot zone, cold zone, dry zone, and wet zone. We love this breakdown because it makes understanding both the function and the design possibilities super easy. The hot zone refers to the area where the cooktops, grills, pizza ovens, and the like are situated; whereas the cold zone refers to storage and contains refrigerators, freezers, and other cold storage spaces. The dry area includes the counter space used for food preparations plus cabinetry and storage space. The wet zone refers to the sink, any storage used

outdoorhome

19

OUTDOORCHEF

for sink-related activities, and the surrounding countertop. Each one of these functional zones requires countertop space to support their purposes. Kalamazoo refers to these spaces as landing areas, and they offer some great general guidelines at www.kalamazoogourmet.com.

KITCHEN SEATING

Many outdoor kitchens today include bar height counter areas for guest seating close to the action. This is an important element to take into account right from the beginning of the design process as it of course ties in directly to the overall size of the outdoor kitchen footprint. This area can be a stumbling block for inexperienced kitchen designers so it’s important to note a few things here. When deciding how many seats will be included in your design, remember to account for more than just the width of the seat itself ; 24” per guest is a good starting point. Remember that knee space is a huge part of overall comfort for your guests, so counter overhangs of 12”-18” must be included. Leave ample room behind the seating row for guests to move their chairs in and out when coming and going. For large bar counters, consider an arched layout that will allow for more guest con-

20

SPRING 2016

versations and co-mingling. If you host large gatherings from time to time, consider carving out a separate area in addition to the bar counter seating for serving and mingling. Additionally, be sure to include features that make your outdoor space the center of the summer; comfortable tables and chairs for extra seating, fire pits or fireplaces to add warmth, decorative objects like pillows and outdoor rugs, and outdoor landscape lighting to dramatically improve the function and style of your outdoor rooms. If designed and installed correctly, it won’t take long for your new outdoor kitchen to become the center of your home for the spring, summer, and fall months (and quick use in the winter!). Be sure to work with professionals to ensure your project functions well and looks beautiful. Happy outdoor cooking!

With Kids + Pets in Mind Landscapes designed for little ones and furry ones can still be visually stunning for eyes of any age. WORDS + IMAGES AUSTIN GANIM LANDSCAPE DESIGN

D

esigning landscapes for children and pets is one of the most rewarding aspects for landscaping professionals. It’s challenging to design spaces that are engaging, beautiful, and safe; but when you get it right, the results can be magical.

UNDERSTAND THE NEEDS Taking time to learn what activities children enjoy and incorporating those themes or activities into the landscape helps to make the space their own. When they feel comfortable and excited, they will be encouraged to spend more time outside (read: less electronics!). Determining if there will be a conventional play structure or elements of nature play, as well as educational features such as edible or pollinator gardens will help to drive the design process. For canines; understanding their play habits, such as running, digging, and sampling plants is important. An often-neglected topic is understanding the pets bathroom behaviors. If the pet prefers, or has been trained to prefer, a specific surface when going to the bathroom is

22

SPRING 2016

an integral part of the design of any pet friendly landscape.

THE GROUND Active children often wear out the lawn beneath their play structures. When the lawn is used as a play surface, if it is not well rooted, repeated active play can wear it down to bare ground, compacting the soil, and creating a muddy mess. Large dogs often like to run along the perimeter of the yard tearing up the lawn along the way, this dirt and mud often finds its way inside. Reduce the amount of dirt and debris that can be tracked into your home by replacing the lawn with playground mulch. Additionally, by using contrasting colored mulch, you can create definition between play spaces and garden areas.

SAFETY Avoid using plants that may be poisonous if ingested or plants that have large thorns and spikes. These can be hazardous both to children and pets

who may unknowingly eat poisonous plants or reach and grab at thorny stems or branches while trying to balance themselves. You’d be surprised how many homeowners had no idea that their garden plants weren’t dog or kid friendly! For those plantings that you are passionate about keeping (e.g. vegetable gardens, berry patches, or fruit trees), consider installing fencing or other enclosures to keep children and pets from wandering off and safe from unwelcome guests.

ADD FUN STUFF Create spaces where children can play at ease while still being supervised from a nearby distance will help make sure your kids and animals take advantage of their play areas. Start with areas that are adjacent to indoor and outdoor living spaces. For aesthetics, integrate play elements like play houses, swing sets, geodesic climbing domes, and natural climbing rocks into all of the outdoor spaces (rather than have them stand out by placing them into one corner). Of course, there are many other play elements - think outside the box! For example, incorporate edible plants, as well as plants that attract pollinators, birds, and butterflies would encourage children to interact with the landscape. These types of features will help them learn to love nature and be more curious about the world around them. The next time you find yourself thinking about how to optimize your outdoor spaces, think about your family – the humans and animals. Take time to consider how they could enjoy your backyard more. By making these spaces engaging for everyone, you’ll find yourself happier and outside more often.

t’s often said that the most amazing backyards are those that are planned with the home’s architecture and interior spaces top of mind. If done well, a backyard (and front for that matter) that appears naturally within the space – as if everything has always been there is the result. When the homeowners of this incredible outdoor living space wanted a luxurious and comfortable escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, they did just that: they made sure that their outdoor dreams could be made true at this home – before they purchased it. The growing family wanted a space they could retreat to for relaxing and recharging from the seemingly faraway stresses of a NYC workday; their own peaceful sanctuary for the small and large gatherings. This was no easy task for what was then a very ordinary backyard, but Platinum Site Development saw what could be, and after confirming the possibility,

the soon-to-be-homeowners proceeded with the purchase of this home. It all started with landscaping plans and 3D computer renderings that told the story of a private oasis. Over the course of the 6-8 weeks of designing, Platinum Site Development owner, Anthony Lauro, and his team brought to life the vision for a project that would not only meet the homeowners’ needs and wishes, but bring together comfort and sophistication in a way seldom found in outdoor living. Platinum broke ground in May 2012 and just two months of construction later, the start of what will make many memories was born. Platinum unveiled a truly spectacular backyard addition to a classically beautiful home. At the center of the party, a 20’x40’ custom gunite pool acts as an anchor for the seamlessly connected spaces—or outdoor rooms—around it. Expanding substantially on the modest 20’x40’ footprint is a 10’x18’ sun deck with adjustable lounges located opposite the pool from a completely custom 12’x10’ 26

integrated spa. The spa is positioned perfectly inline with the home’s backdoor sliders, creating a formal structure to the pool design that mirrors nicely that of the surrounding plantings. The spa sports custom built and molded gunite therapy jet massage lounges and fully automated operation run by the Intellitouch System from Pentair. In fact, the whole backyard is automated. On the way home from work, the homeowner can turn on the pool, fire up the LED landscape lighting system, and start the therapy jets in the spa all from his iPhone. By the time he arrives and slides open the backdoor, all the features of this luxury backyard are ready for use. If the temperatures aren’t conducive for taking a swim, this backyard still has more to offer. A 16’ tall fireplace forms one side of an outdoor dining room that’s covered overhead by a custom pergola with bluestone accents. The dining room is conveniently located close to the outdoor kitchen, designed for easy entertaining. The sprawling 2600 sq.ft. patio that seamlessly connects all the outdoor spaces together is built using Techo-Bloc concrete pavers. Techo-Bloc products were also used for the outdoor fireplace, portions of the pool coping, and the outdoor kitchen. The hardscape manufacturer staged the project beautifully for the filming of their national TV commercial and also photographed the project for their sales catalog (see this commercial and more behind the scenes project footage by visiting: www.outdoorhomemagazine. com/projectfeatures/sophisticationextras. All aspects of the project were designed and built in house by the Platinum Site Development team, with the exception of the pergola, which was designed by Platinum and built by Robert Nock of Silver Fox Construction Ltd.
