As property owners, water is critical to protecting our landscaping investment. In fact, plant health care experts consider the amount of water a plant receives to be at least 50% of any landscape plan’s success. New technologies in irrigation systems improve the efficiency of water distribution, and when used in conjunction with the newest “smart systems” conserve water through proper scheduling.

IS IT FOR ME? Even with sustainable irrigation systems, there are still benefits to collecting clean and free rainwater as a key supplement to the system. Perfect candidates include those homeowners who are concerned about their domestic water well supply or those frustrated about the increasing cost of municipal water sources. Rainwater harvesting isn’t limited to homeowners, however. The U.S. Green Building Councils’ LEED Standards, provide best practices, which include employing ‘harvested rainwater’ techniques so that commercial projects can focus on ways to reduce their environmental impact by following these recommendations. Of course, homeowners should also benefit from this information when taking on a project on any size property.

R ainwater Harvesting Learn to preserve one of our greatest resources while also helping our landscapes flourish. words: Robert Byrnes

10

SUMMER 2016

Today, “going green” is becoming increasingly popular and the trend has hit the landscape market in a hurry. Conserving on rainwater is nothing new, however. People have been collecting rainwater and re-utilizing it for over four thousand years; farmers cleared hillsides to increase the run-off and directed the water to agricultural fields. Fast forward to the irrigation industry today and this important practice is called rainwater harvesting.

When considering a Rainwater Harvesting System for your property, there are a few key questions to take into consideration. 1. WILL THE WATER ONLY BE USED FOR IRRIGATION? (e.g. is there a possibility to collect water for other household needs such as sewage, cleaning, etc.?) 2. HOW WILL THE WATER BE COLLECTED? (e.g. collect rainwater from any natural or man-made impervious surface, not limited to the roof.)

from breeding. A small pump can easily be used with a homemade rain barrel. Additionally, rainwater harvesting systems are available in all sizes, and your particular needs would depend on the amount of water to be collected and the irrigation system plans for the property. These integrated systems are easily designed and installed by a specialist, and come fully assembled with tank, filters, pumps, and level sensors. Every system needs a backup water source to keep the tanks at a minimum water level. The backup source is either a private well or the city water. The pumps will automatically shut off if the water levels get too low, in order to avoid running too dry. These larger system tanks are usually buried underground, but can also be manufactured to be placed above ground if it makes more sense for your situation. To begin researching the best rainwater harvesting system for your needs, you can contact a local irrigation contractor, landscaper, landscape designer, or landscape architect. Or you can do a search for industry manufacturers and find the contact person in your area. Remember—water is one of our most precious resources and we can learn to preserve it while also helping our landscapes flourish. About the Author

WHERE DO I START? Consider all the options available for the collection of rainwater. The roof is the most utilized and in most cases, the first place to start. To estimate how much rainwater you’ll collect from yours, start by measuring all available roofing surface and averaging the annual rainfall in your area. A great rule of thumb is that every 1,000 square foot space of a roof will catch approximately 620 gallons of water after one inch of rainfall. Another very basic and quite fun way

12

SUMMER 2016

to start collecting rainwater immediately is with a rain barrel. These barrels are pre-made products that are both decorative and purposefully designed. The water entering the barrel will be filtered from debris to prevent clogging at the in-take and out-take openings. Decorative spigots can be attached to auto-feed a low flow (drip) irrigation system, or to fill manual watering cans. You can make your own rain barrel out of wood or plastic, using standard (window) screening over all openings to prevent debris, and any insects (especially mosquitoes)

SUMMER 2016

Vegetable gardens have commonly found their home in a far off distant corner of our yards, separate from all the actual gardens featured closer to home. But with the revival of the ‘backyard to table’ movement here in the Tri-State area, has also come a new trend in residential planting design.

GROW

GROUP PLANTS FOR BOLD BLOCKS OF COLOR

All of the sudden, both landscape professionals and gardening enthusiasts are seeing edibles for not only the fresh produce, but for the ornamental color and texture they bring to the planting party. Here, we take a look at a few guiding principles that will help edibles and ornamentals cozy-up nicely together in the same bed.

MATCH SUN AND WATER REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS While many edibles are quite easy to grow, it’s important to note their sunlight and water requirements. When mixing edibles and ornamentals, be sure to remember that edibles love lots of sun—at least 6 hours a day. They also require a consistent moisture level 18

SUMMER 2016

which can be challenging for the hard to reach areas of your property. Choose ornamental companions that will also be happy in these conditions.

WHICH EDIBLES CAN DOUBLE AS ORNAMENTALS? This is where the typical mind frame in which we think about edibles is really challenged. Many vegetable and fruit plants have beautiful foliage and fruit that can rival that of traditional ornamentals. Here in NY and CT, blueberries make an awesome hedge with three season interest; while strawberries and thyme make great groundcovers.

One of the best ways to create visual interest while still maintaining a nice sense of structure, is through the use of color blocks. This is where edibles can really make a strong statement. Rich, vibrant greens of Romaine lettuce look almost magical next to the deep purples of cabbage. Mix in the dark blues found in Pansies and you’ve got a comingled statement of color that looks—and tastes—great.

CONTAINERS PACK A BIG PUNCH Containers add a powerful dimension to patio, decks, and planting beds that’s hard to beat. They are an awesome way to bring vibrant colors and height to the residential landscape. When it comes to edibles, almost everything you can grow in the garden, you can grow in a container. For herbs like basil, thyme, and rosemary, utilize small planters close to the kitchen and grill. Larger planters bursting with patio tomatoes can be set on the patio’s edge or scattered about in planting beds of ornamentals.

The Heart of the Home With the outdoor living trend alive and well, outdoor kitchens are rapidly emerging as the new entertaining ’hubs’ of outdoor gatherings.

Whether it’s an impromptu Sunday afternoon BBQ, a mid-week dinner al fresco, or a Saturday evening get together, the summer weather has a way of pulling us outside for time with family and friends. So it comes as no surprise, then, that many homeowners in the Tri-state area are taking part in a fast-growing, wildly popular trend; blurring the lines between interior and exterior living spaces. Much as the indoor kitchen has been the heart of the home for decades, the exterior counterparts have found a similar place at the center of the outdoor home. What is it about indoor kitchens? What draws us to them, how are they designed to make us, and those around us, feel comfortable and want to spend time there? Why do so many of our most memorable conversations happen there? What makes them the heart of the home?

COOKING SPACE Whether you have a contemporary open floor plan or a closed-off cottage style kitchen, the main focus starts off with the cooking area. The whole space is planned to make this activity as efficient as possible. With prep areas, storage spaces, and utensils all close at hand, it ends up being quite easy to not only entertain guests while cooking, but can also draws them into the process, creating a deeper connection. Much like these indoor spaces, there are a vast selection of products available on the market for cooking outdoors. Start with the types of food you normally enjoy preparing for guests

(and for yourself!). Do you add a pizza oven or can the grill have a pizza insert? Do you use wood fired appliances or gas, or maybe a combination of both? This would be where those ever annoying lists actually do come in handy because it allows you the opportunity to place your requirements in order of importance. Consider other add-ons to help reduce time for prepping and cooking (to reduce the amount of times needed to run inside). A sink close by will always be handy and remember, it gets hot out there, so consider an outdoor fridge and iced drink compartments.

SEATING Whether it’s a dining table or a selection of barstools, next point of order will be the seating space. Often, kitchens have a variety of seating options. Guests can sit nearby at a bar height counter while the chef prepares the yummy bites and then move to a separate

seating area for everyone to enjoy a meal together. While cooking in your outdoor kitchen, provide guests with barstools—this goes back to including plenty of counter space. And just like the indoors, an outdoor dining table can have multiple uses: serving, a gathering point, lounging, and even homework (outside!). You’ll soon find yourself able to drift from one conversation to the next as your guests settle down and start to mingle.

FINISHING TOUCHES For your interiors, the lighting,

24

SUMMER 2016

paint, and pictures all go very far in providing comfort and function. This area is often the most neglected when it comes to creating outdoor living spaces. Don’t let this happen to you! Lighting is probably the most important of these finishing touches and perhaps belongs in the essential category. Your outdoor kitchen needs adequate lighting to see your guests as well as the steak on the grill. When designed correctly, outdoor lighting can add soft ambience, beauty, and increased functionality - all at once. All said and done, it’s still important to remember that your outdoor kitchen is, well: outside. Highlight this at every opportunity by softly reminding guests to look around them as well as above. Encourage this by adding points of visual interest at varying heights such as large trees, shrubs, and colourful planters. Sit back and relax, have fun and enjoy the company of those around you. After all, in the summer months, the heart of the outdoor home is the outdoor kitchen.

rban renewal and revival has a special place in many of our hearts and this project ticks all the boxes. What began as a dumpster-filled parking lot adjacent to a busy train station, this Port Chester property was transformed into a gathering place that not only promotes the use of mass transit, but also gives the local community a boost. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding railway, landscape architecture firm, Wesley Stout Associates, LLC, set out to create an intimate beer garden. The entryway, rustically paved with reclaimed stone “plank” pavers, leads visitors to wonder what lies beyond the privacy screen panels emerging above the custom planters of wood and steel. The planters that form the “walls” of the front entrance are very appropriately filled with common hops and kiwi vines that nicely incorporate the brewer’s element. Aside

from creating privacy and sound barrier, the plantings work to soften the hard, almost industrial, edges of the planters and begin to hint at what lies beyond the giant reclaimed timber door. The main pavilion provides cover for the bar and a seating area, while allowing natural light to enter through a series of windows set into the steel work. Through masterful design and careful attention to the historic value of the site, the designers somehow transport visitors to a slower time in history where a sense of community is still alive and well. The beer garden “floor” constructed of irregular flagstone complements perfectly the timber and steel counterparts of the space. At the edge of the patio stands a custom fence of powder-coated steel uprights that are installed in a serpentine curving line. The screen buffers the sound of the nearby train tracks and creates a secure environment while still maintaining visibility to the street. 30

SUMMER 2016

For the back side of the beer garden facing the train platform, a barrier wall of solid wood and steel panels provide excellent sound attenuation and showcases a one-of-a-kind installation. The illuminated backdrop screening features paintings of historic conductors in a pickled finish that somehow makes the new wood seem gracefully aged. The varied walls of the garden space contain a large open bar and two impressive fireplaces that seem to pepper the entire garden with a warm, welcoming vibe. To ensure of the proper ambiance, this large exterior fireplace with stone cladding, is set against the acoustic ‘backwall.’ Its inviting fire draws the attention of many for conversations. For a whimsical touch, there is soft foliage of the honey locust grove overhead, accompanied by swooping string lights. This space was been designed to foster social engagement

The outdoor rooms seem to echo the classic phrases of “meet me at the gateway,” “we’ll tell stories by the fire,” and “let’s share a big table with friends under a ceiling of string lights and take the train safely home.” Visitors are drawn into the building (whether heading there or not) which has helped to create a perfect mix of first timers and regulars. 2016 CTASLA Award Winner Landscape Architectural Design – Built Works (Municipal/Public Spaces)

or a young NY family of four, the goal of someday owning a luxury backyard with a contemporary, yet comfortable, design became a reality when they broke ground in the fall of 2014. With the rare opportunity to work on both the interior and exterior renovations of the property, design/build firm, Neave Group Outdoor Solutions, worked non-stop to bring this ultimate family entertainer’s dream backyard to fruition in the spring of 2015. Creating the seamless indoor/outdoor living spaces that were desired by the client was no small undertaking. With almost 20’ of elevation change between the indoor living space and the lowest part of the outdoor design, the project’s complexity and scale was a welcomed challenge for the team at Neave Group. front entrance of the home all the way to the woods at the very back of the garden, they would have ultimate control to create a series of indoor/outdoor living spaces that flowed naturally and effortlessly. “Designing the outside in coordination with the interior made for a superior end product that is in harmony with the entire living space” explained a designer at Neave. Greeted by a travertine walkway, complemented by neatly trimmed garden beds of Liriope, Boxwoods, and Hydrangeas, guests are casually guided up to the front entrance of the home. Surrounding the oversized cherry wood door is matching splitface marble veneer stone that nicely echos the front walkway. This deck overlooks a 24x34 ft. infinity edge pool with glass tile, crisp bluestone coping, and travertine patio surround. The project

is tied together nicely on the vertical elevations by using the same split-face marble veneer stone that greets you at the front entrance. These details all work together to form a harmonious flow through the entire home. The patio edges are trimmed with a contemporary steel-clipped toughened glass, allowing for an open, yet protected view of the surrounding gardens. Staying true to the homeowner’s goal of outdoor entertaining, a final set of steps leads down to the perfectly manicured lawn, consisting of level play areas complete with goal posts and a putting green. This lowest level, along with the series of luxury outdoor rooms above, are all concealed by surrounding native rock and a large tree line which all allows for the ultimate sense of natural privacy. Complementing the beautiful, multi-level design is a selection of specifically chosen outdoor furniture pieces and cleverly placed umbrellas, all appointed by Neave Group’s designers. Taking in the space, it’s easy to feel like you’re lounging around the pool at one of the world’s leading resort hotels. Breath-taking to say the least. Throughout this NY masterpiece, the team of designers and master craftsmen used a clever application of complementary natural stone textures and hardwood materials. Gently illuminated by well-placed exterior lighting solutions, the impressive water feature elements are able to shine against the natural backdrop. Every design element helps to enhance the grace with which this home flows from one space to the next. It all adds up to a stunning interpretation of the inside-outside living trend that is exploding here in the NY/CT region.
