Most beautiful things i found in this world are amazingly simple, No matter it is a physics equation, a kind of philosophy, a piece of leaf, a chair or a skyscraper. Therefore, i am always in search for a way to preceive and understand things in a deeper and simpler manner in order to create. I am looking forward to a challenge of designing or creating things that can give a small step forward to the improvement to people’s life. Enclosed are my works.

Residential Housing
COREY PORFOLIO | 5
ABSTRACT Mainland Real Estate Developer contracted Joey Ho Design to design 4 residential houses in an empty lot. We are cooperating with an Authorized Person and an electrical and mechanical engineer and a structural engineer. i work as a designer assisting Joey and a coordinator between E&M engineering, structural engineer and Authorized Person. LEARNINGS Coordinating with Authorized Person, Electrical and Mechanical Engineer and Structural Engineer I learned much about each professions values and their approach toward an architectural project. During a meeting we were stuck in a column block the stairway, i proposed use the lift shaft as structural column to eliminate the existing column design. However the structural argued with me and finally i naively assumed he does not want to change because he doesn’t want to increase his own workload. But he said seriously to me: ”This building is probably out live us, the usage will change over the years, the lift shaft as a structure will seriously affect the flexibility of a building.” After that, i learned to respect other consultants more and always ask their reason behind their design.

ABSTRACT A real estate showroom interior design was commissioned to Joey Ho and i work as assisting designer in showroom lobby, model rooms and AV introduction room. LEARNINGS I am responsbile of the design from the design stage to construction drawings to construction. I used what i have i have learned from the misunderstandings of the exhibition design and produced very detailed construction drawings with many detail drawings. However, some of my detail drawings wasn’t strictly followed. Contractors and individual workers sometimes came up with a smarter way of solving the same problem with the same effect. I learned that because of difference practice in different area, some detail doesn’t need to be strictly followed and can be discussed with craftman.

Shimei Bay Marina Club Duties: Develop Schemes for Multiple Concepts, Instruct and Manage Rendering, Draft Scheme Plans and Elevations, Responsible for all project meetings, Assist Scheme Presentation
The concept dervied from 2 brocarded carp swimming in a Taichi way from top view. 1 fish holds the function of a marina club house and the other holds the function of resident’s club and sales office. LEARNINGS This was my first project in my first official professional job. I was faced with a client is a state owned company China Resources with complecated corporate structure and because of lacks of human resources, I was the only responsible man in the project and get “punched in the face” by clients everytime i go to meeting and then by my boss. I was afraid and worked really hard that in 3 months i hardly slept. Finally i was physically and emotionally cracked down after over 60 hours of contiuous work. The design finally went back to the original one after furious changes in design schemes and rendering and plan production. After this project i finally knew the real importance of politics and client control in design. Not trying to please everyone by working day and night and produce hundres of schemes that clients wouldn’t be able to agree within their corporate structure.

COREY PORFOLIO | 22
Duties: Develop Schemes for Concepts, Instruct and Manage Rendering, Assist Scheme Presentation, Responsible for Interior Design proposal.
ABSTRACT The Armed Police Hospital of Guangdong Province needs to replace its out-patient and emergency building with an integrated multi-function building. This proposal is the winner among a design competition joined by 8 firms. I work as an assisting designer of this building, specializing in facade design, zoning and research. The hopspital building features a curved balcony that not only satisfy client’s need of “Fengshui” but also acting as a buffer to noices produced from the road in front and sunlights coming from the west. I was also commissioned in a freelace base as the interior design and proposed corian. However i was noticed that my design is overbudget and they would not use it.
LEARNINGS The real building was with weired yellow colored with an ugly hospital sign on top of the building due to client request. I wasn’t able to follow this project as i left my internship for school when it enters the construction drawing stage. Due to whatever reason, i learned that budget control and client control after the schematic stage should not be overlooked.

Exhibition
COREY PORFOLIO | 29
ABSTRACT As the vise president of The Hong Kong Design Association, he was responsible of producing an exhibition to showcase Design Association’s members. His exhibition design was also the showcase of his work. We produced this irregular shapes and formed various pocket spaces to house member’s exhibit. The whole design is in white yet distinguished by its form in order not to disturb the participants but also showcased the design in its original form. LEARNINGS HKDA is a non-profit organization. Most of its fundings are from governments. Therefore the exhibition is in a very low budget. The contractor made a mistake of assuming the complexity of the exhibition himeslf before he sees the design, when the design came out with the irregular triangular shapes, they are stunned and very unhappy their price offered could not cover the production cost. Finally they were relunctant to cooperate with me and the draftmenship is dreadful. I wasn’t able to do anything. Joey found out in the site and was very very angry and shouted at the site, which shocked the contractor in reference of Joey’s benign nature. The contractor has to comply to his requirement and produce the satisfying product. I learned that sometimes in order to get what i want and protect myself, i need to stand firm.

ABSTRACT Tung Wah Hospital Group is a famours non-profit organization of Hong Kong. This Elderly Center is a design competition for design and built contractors. Based on the request of a activity room, an office and 2 consulting room. I have to make the space flexible and produced a room with moveable partition. As the design is consultantion center for lonely elderly who is about to pass away, i created a warm and soft texture in the environment for those elderlies to feel at home with hope. LEARNINGS The competition lost due to overbudget, the problem could be solved with using a different but similar set of materials. Ex. wood texture plastic laminate instead of wood vaneer wall finish. I learned that the three most important dealing with non-profit organization group is design, budget and budget.

Duties: Lead Design Concepts, Site Coordination, General Coordination, Client Management, Rendering, Scheme Presentation.
ABSTRACT Client Chiho Tiande bought a former factory of refurbishment of containers in Yuen Long industrial area and would like to make a 60 million investment in building a new factory and alter the old factories. We are commissioned to propose a master plan and one main metal processing facility in the very center of the site. Due to the heat of the site in summer (no shelter in a 5 km radius), harvesting sunlight because a very feasible option of both cooling down the processing plant and saving electric bills. The project is on-going LEARNINGS I proposed a metal ceiling with a polar panel option in fear that for a scrap metal processing plant it would be over budget. However, the client gets really interested and we are currently quoting different solar panel company. Contrary to my estimating, the solar panel system price is much lower over these few years and a solar panel equipped roof is very much economically feasible and usually the extra money can be returned in electric bills in about 5 years. Energy efficient architecture is going to a new era and not as far reach to environmentally aware architects as technology advances.

ABSTRACT Ever year, PolyU School of Design has a design showcase in a form of booth in BoDW (Business of Design Week). In year 2009, 3 students was assigned by our professor Alvin Yip to form a designed team for this booth design project. I am one of them.A cardboard manufacturer in Dongguan is sponsoring us with their tailor made cardboard manufactuering . We brainstored ideas building the whole structure in cardboard without glues and nails, only joints. After discussions and testings, prototypes were put into manufactering we designed two boothes starting from scratch with only our hands. The process only take a few weeks. LEARNINGSDuring the design process, the stripped cardboard pattern is submitted to the manufactuer with only the rendering and key dimensions. However, due to our assumption that things we understand as we developed together will be understood by cardboard manufactuers, the product is working in a visually similar way with the design. As time constraints, the design was abandoned and the cardboard manufacter’s production was accepted. We learned that in whatever case, even hand drafted technical drawings that describe the nature of design should accompanied with 3D renderings to reduce understandings.

Union Station Parking Conversion
COMMERCIAL SPACE
ABSTRACT The project challenges us to revitalize a gigantic parking lot next to union station in Chicago. By 2020, the high speed train development in the US will use Chicago as a major hub to connect passengers from the west coast to the east coast. The parking lot will be rendered obselete at that time. The proposal is the regentrificated this grid as a city portal and an activated commercial area. By incorporating large canopies, a buffer space is created to accomodate the severe winter coldness in Chicago and save energy.

ABSTRACT The Democratic design idea is first visited by the design of Rockfeller Center in the teen 1900s, Metabolism and Archigram both proposed the idea of the building is organic and evolve by itself by adapting to user’s need. They didn’t succeed as building technology be then is still focused on post WWII mass manufacturing. This project in Chicago, both as a light manufacturing area and residential, i tapped in the concept to having a light manufacturing shop consists of advanced construction machines including large scale CNCs and 3D printers for the building to evolve itself and increase the height of itself. The building is dividing organically to different need of users by ultilizing 3D printing technology and tele-design service that can be translated to local machine and implemented. Instead of one architect designing one building, designers and architects can collaborate through time and different location and provide individual care to clients as technology advances in near future.

Public Interior Architectural Design
:
ABSTRACT For over 3 years studying interior design, i gradually begin to form some idea of the trend in interior design. Over these years of interior design development, it has been filling the gap between architecture and product design, distinguishing from interior decoration (a profession of even longer history). However, nowadays, public spaces is expanding dramatically due to improvement in construction technology. Interior design has so much possibility within the extended space and more ambigious architectural boundary that interior design can sometimes be understood as architecture within architecture. As architecture education has been symphasizing forms and functions, interior design has been focusing in expenrience, which is more suitable to architecture within architecture in my understanding. Guangzhou East Railway Station is a station that contains huge spaces that has not been assigned any functions or spatial identities. I regard it as a great possibility and start working on it. Researching on several successful railway stations around the world, i found a common thing they have is a node concentrating flow of people and activities. Therefore, the design is establishing a node in the station and endow it with indentities also working as a public space. During the research i experienced use of force against me to be lifted out of the station by station security guard merely by fear of my questionaires might reveal their station’s “imperfection”. After this angry experience, CONCEPT i release my anger by forming the concept of dropping foreign objects containing of external activities and functions filled with communicty spirit into the node area to make the station a more user-friendly place rather than the communist cold blooded way of bullying users because of their fear of mistakes LEARNINGS I wasn’t very aware of my forming of concepts and i ignored telling the hidden story of my mind forming this kind of concept out of anger. This makes other professors and critics couldn’t see a clear justification of my design approach. I learned that i should always tell the full story and justifciation when delivering the presentation and this learning helped me a lot in my work.

Competition
Housing Archetype Proposal
LEARNINGS We lost in the competition because we haven’t address the economic viabilities of the project. The building frame to house the existing would be out of budget of many developers because they would not be able to see the lower maintanence of future tenants and subsequently increase their long term revenue. It needs more time and funding to contiune this project and project an economic viable solution for developers and government to see.

ABSTRACT Hong Kong’s housing market very competitive due to high density. The government is looking for solution and proposed an open competition to investigate in new housing paradigms. A prime site is selected at the Hung Hom reclaimation area facing the victoria harbour. If the government is to sell the land for apartments, the plot ratio and site coverage will incur a 30 stories screen building. We joined the competition proposed a Metabolism movement inspired adaptable housing scheme to solved the many problems posed to the current Hong Kong housing archetype. The Metabolism movement is vanished due to inmature technology at the time that caused several major and fatal problems to their buildings. With the advent of new technologies and manufactering technic, it is quite possible to re-introduce this philosophy into the housing architecture world.

BUY ONE UNIT SPACE GET ONE UNIT OF GREEN GARDEN!
“ ”must be implied to ensure it meets less than 50% countainer occupancy standard in order to control the Gross Floor Area within regulation by planning authority.
The proposal is to fulfill the following need and this proposal’s solutions -Hong Kong People have a tradition of investing properties with more than 1 property in hand, making properties’s occupancy less than 100%. -The high density of Hong Kong has forced government to increase plot ratios in many areas, tall longitudinal buildings always bring a screening effect blocking other building’s ventilation and view, especially so to harbour side properties. With flats people buy, it’s not actually a enclosed flat, it is only a space that ensures them with the flat. As long as they are not moving in, the space is empty and could be used for ventilation and provide view to buildings behind.
Everytime people move, they only need to rent a lorry and move their home to a new building and plug it in. No need to pack and unpack and lose their beloings during transportation. -Lacking communal area is a social issue disconnecting people from others causing many social problems. Sky gardens are GFA exemptions that can be used as communal spaces between flats, children could get together to play, people can relax and talk in communal spaces and form different communities in different pocket spaces.
COREY PORFOLIO | 43
-Hong Kong has a high mobility rate, interior decoration not only causing noise to neighbours but also pose harm to environment. This is especially true to rental flats

ABSTRACT In my cooperative project in university, we are assigned to a project working with design students from other disciplines and a company. I work with product design students for a project started by Osram. Osram has made a innovation breakthrough in LED spotlights which can acheive high luminence in a luminence unit smaller than a finger nail. This opens a possbility of a redesigned spotlight different from the traditional Halogen spotlight. We brainstormed a few ideas and worked on an idea which minimalizing the presence of light giving more freedom to interior designers.

A W(M)ood Device
ABSTRACT This project is to convey the mood of a piece of music using wood. Based on Dvorak’s No.9 Symphony “New World”, fourth movement Allegro con fuoco, which is a strong rythem with powerful melodies and energetic acoustics. The device i made is called the ENERGY CUBE. The big cube is composed by small cubes as the metaphor of atoms in matter in physics. the bounding between atoms and atoms in chemicals and materials contains great energy. That is also why chemical reactions sometimes create great amount of heat and also why the atom bombs worked. As the bounding is expressed through a magnified metaphor, the light in the middle creats a force of breaking the bounds. The tension lets people feel this cube is going to explode which conveys the mood of the energetic movement from Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony.

DETOUR 09
:
China Becomings & SUPERCRIT
LEARNINGS The event is very successful as we have accomodated participant’s need and help them to understand Hong Kong’s design landscape. However the SUPERCRIT event didn’t gain much traction. I began to understand to propose a new activity we should not only focus come up with the idea, work out with technical issues like finding sponsors from mobile carriers and solving aspect ratios in monster LED screens. Promotion is crucial. As project comes in a later stage, we missed the mass promotion opportunity in BoDW and people did not intentionally turn up for the event, making the critique less effective.

ABSTRACT During my first full time work as a research assistant in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. I had a chance of working for a Hong Kong active curator Alvin Yip. He has been organizing a sister event with BoDW 09, called DETOUR 09. The anchor site for this event is the historical Former Central Police Married Headquaters. I am his curatorial assistant in this event. Besides managing the key event “China Becomings” (an event inviting recent design graduates from top universities in greater China area to put on an installation), I am also involved in site coordinations and inventing a premier function “Supercirt 2.0”.
COREY PORFOLIO | 56
the site is covered with a beach, namely, DETOUR on the Beach, with a hanging bridge over it designed by William Lim and exhibits are organized on two blocks sandwiching the beach. Main events happen on the beach such as movie screening and SUPERCRIT 2.0

The Mocking Stamps
: COREY PORFOLIO | 63
ABSTRACT During my Research Assitantship my professor Alvin Yip was invited to a stamp exhibition in Central Library of Hong Kong introducing Hong Kong’s history. Alvin came up with this mocking stamp idea and we brainstormed the project. I get to start researching Hong Kong’s historical events since 1950 and came up with some interesting stories and images. We studies the incidents of the pictures and combined it with current political situation and made this set of stamps by hand. LEARNINGS Art doesn’t have to be very serious, it could be very political and witty and fun.
COREY PORFOLIO | 64
Real estate developers make use of building and planning authorities Gross Floor Area exemption scheme to increase their marketable GFA in order to increase their profit.
We have combined the 1980’s culture of such eager for high return with the down to earth working style 1960’s new immigrants starting small movable food business to earn their living.
This stamp is the mock the developer’s vast bay window in HK’s real estates. To be honest, while i was doing this project, i did live in a small flat sleeping on bay window like this everynight.
In fear of having budget deficit in the 2003 SARS crisis, the Housing Authority decided to sell most of its real estate public properties in control of company LINK REIT. The company later increase rent drastically in public housing and caused serious backfire because of unaffordable user and tenants.
Kowloon City is a anarchic city in Kowloon before 1994 when government dismantled it. Before that it has totally no planning , no police, no government in this city. Making it the most dangerous and dense area in the world. People inside live a harsh live never being able to see the sunlight.
Lak Tak estate is one of Hong Kong Housing Authoriety’s experimental public housing design scheme with hollow cylinder design to increase facade area at the rim where the flats are located and around the central hollow being the corridor. This design has proved to increase criminal activities, depression and suicide rate.
Yet the in the reclaimed west kowloon area 10 years later, government has a very lose plot ratio control in order to satisfied real estate developer’s need, making it another super dense area with sky rocket real estate price. This stamp is to mock the development as a reborn of kowloon city.
The stamp is to use this architype and mock selling properties to LINK REIT is like launching rockets in Lai Tak Estate.
The picture is originally appeared in 1960s where the cultural revolution affected Hong Kong and HK people holding the little red book by Mao to protest British government’s colonial rule. However, we have altered the little red book by Mao into a British National (Overseas) Passport when before 1997 (Return of Hong Kong to China) everyone is registering their BNO identity and holding BNO Passpot in fear of Chinese Communist Party.
Short-sighted of the temperal slow down of Hong Kong’s economic development. The government signed a contract with Disney to build a Disneyland in Hong Kong’s Lantau island, forcing a few villages to relocate and carried on the project even they found there is a ancient village remain underwater of the construction side. This stamp is the sarcastically point out the disney’s favourite logo has punched a big two holes above the traditional circular southern Chinese village entrance.
