Every scrapbook tells a story – in words or pictures or some combination of both. That book you’re working on can be whimsical and light or painfully honest and revealing. It can be touchingly emotional or functionally informative. Your scrapbooks are, quite literally, what you make of them. And how you make them is up to you. Your style can be shaped by your tastes, your message and the objectives you want that album to achieve. Is this particular album a time capsule message to your grandchildren? Or is this a birthday gift for your sister? The choices are yours. But it won’t be anything if you don’t turn out those pages and get it done. So in the spirit of inspiring your creativity we present this collection of ideas. We hope they inspire you to try something new. We hope they inspire your passion. But most of all, we hope they inspire you to complete and share your albums – for yourself and the people who love you.

How’d they do that? Look through the layouts here and you’ll see many beautiful and clever techniques. We asked our page designers to create layouts that inspire them – whether that means content, design or color choices. Some of the papers and enhancements have been sanded, ruffled or distressed. Most of the photos have been cropped and some even have stickers or writing on them. If you’d like to experiment with any of these techniques, we encourage

completed albums

Completed albums are my passion. The power of these priceless keepsakes to preserve stories and bring families closer together is what drives us at Creative Memories.

So, if you ask me, photos and journaling are all it takes to make a beautiful album. That’s my style. For others, it can be fun and rewarding to design pages that are very creative.

At Creative Memories, we want to inspire you no matter what your style. And this book of ideas is dedicated to those who love to decorate. We hope the ideas inspire you to finish pages, tell stories and complete albums!

If you’re already inspired to work on your albums with fun, clear, creative pages and this book offers you ideas to complete more pages, mission accomplished.

S girl Every girl is an inspiration. She’s a flower that

blooms. She’s a butterfly that spreads her fragile wings and soars. And, yes, sometimes she’s a drum that beats on your very last nerve.

All of these are parts of what makes the girls in our lives so special. So how will you show the

girl – and the world – what she means to you? Tell her tales. Sing her songs. Let these ideas

get you started. Then let your imagination go.

Wow, they’re ad ably fl al!

To make great flowers like the ones on this page, start out by cutting a circle using the Custom Cutting System Circle Patterns. Then use an All-Purpose Scissors to cut a half-inch spiral pattern from the outside, around and around, all the way into the middle (A). Using the center of your circle as the starting point, fold the paper back and forth, holding it in the center, forming the flower (B). Punch a circle using the Circle Maker and cover it in adhesive. Then place your flower on that circle. Use your fingernail to fold the edges of the paper back a bit to add dimension to your finished flower. ☛ingredients: Disney© Power™ Palette Kit, Primary Power™ Palette, Simple ABC/123 Stickers (black), Cardstock (black), Custom Cutting System™ (circles), Circle Maker, All-Purpose Scissors, Fine-Tip Pen (black, blue, gold), Tape Runner Idea Book Vol. I

about being a mom, designing a self-portrait can be. This mom chose a blackand-white photo and added a few special effects, creating a high contrast picture with sepia-tone coloring. Using a sheet of Clay Cardstock as the foundation, she backed the picture with strips of designer paper, cutting a few strips with our 12inch Decorative Trimmer to create a wave pattern (mom in constant motion?) at the bottom of the picture. They’re strong enough to protect and defend – but often can’t lift a toilet seat. Still, where would we be without the guys in our lives? Have you tic tac told her how adorable she is today? This simple, snappy layout gives you the flexibility to show and tell what’s in your heart. More photos? More journaling? You decide. You’ve got nine squares to play with. We’ve added some fun flourishes like paper strips to “underline” the journaling and hand-cut letters for the headline (though you can certainly use ABC/123 Stickers). oh

baby! If a newborn baby doesn’t inspire you, then your inspirator is out of whack. Seriously, think about the fresh palette of possibilities in front of that child. A world of experiences is waiting. And that kid’s counting on you to document the first few years of those experiences. How will you show her what she doesn’t remember seeing? How will you teach him the lessons he doesn’t remember learning? Let these ideas get you started. Then let your imagination go.

Of course seasonal colors and embellishments look great with matching photos. It’s easy to imagine these autumn enhancements alongside photos of barren trees and blustery days. This layout shows another clever use for seasonal supplies – simply to set a time frame. These baptism-day photos have nothing to do with falling leaves or football. But, years from now, the autumn enhancements will let everyone know at a glance that Lily was born and baptized in the fall! ☛ingredients: Pastel Autumn Power™ Palette Additions, Cardstock (clay), Spargo Ruled Paper, Swirly ABC/123 Stickers (brown), Fine-Tip Pen (cocoa), Corner Maker, Tape Runner.

inspire finding ways to...

Photography has never lost its miraculous effect on me. With its almost magical ability to casually record an image of a human face, photography allows us to express our love for life with a piece of relatively inexpensive electronics. It’s too easy to take for granted. There’s nothing like it.

Over the years, when asked why I’m a photographer, I’ve always joked that it’s because I can’t draw. But it’s obviously much deeper than that. I was 14 when I realized that I could express myself with a camera in a way that I’d never done before. It gave me a voice at a time when I needed one. I still can’t draw. I still don’t care. It’s been such a gift. I’ve spent some of my happiest days alone in the woods with a camera. For some reason I remember a Tuesday morning, 7 a.m., bright sun, crystal clear air, 20 degrees, knee-deep snow, stunning blue sky, great camera. It was heaven. Natural beauty moves our spirit and makes us want to share it. There are very few people who can stand in the presence of a rainbow holding a camera and not take a picture.

56

creativememories.com

56_57_nick_kelsh.indd 56-57

But some of my most satisfying photographs have been simple black-and-white portraits I’ve given as gifts. Their value is undiminished by the fact they are priceless to only a few. I remember thinking when I was a photo student that the most important photographs we have are hiding in wallets and purses. Today I would also add scrapbooks.

We are inspired by photography’s ability to produce a vision of a world that doesn’t always exist. That’s a good thing. When we ask two people to put their arms around each other and smile into the camera we are re-creating a little piece of the perfect world that lives in our minds and in our hearts. We ask them to smile because we believe in their inherent goodness and we want a piece of it that we can hold in our hands. If only it were so easy to spare them any pain and heartache. The blending of snapshots and scrapbooks represents another form of this personal perfect world. Together they produce an effect that neither one of them

makes alone. They are acts of hope and optimism. They are family treasures. They are as much an inspiration to today’s readers as they will be to our grandchildren’s grandchildren.

Never forget how wondrous photography is. Never forget where scrapbooks come from. Remember why you shoot photographs. Remember what they mean. Let the very best in you come out. Let your feelings show up on every page. Let your photographs and scrapbooks bear witness to your family. As much as I would like to believe that photography is the heart and soul of scrapbooking, it’s not – it’s the generous spirit of scrapbookers sharing the love they have for their family and friends with snapshots, colorful pieces of paper, and crack-andpeel stickers. inspire finding ways to...

Everyone has their own tricks for picking colors in their layouts. Sometimes it works well to pick a prominent, recurring color from your photos and match that. Sometimes you can get just the right look by matching the color of a single important element in your photos. In this layout, a series of paper and flower colors combine to enhance the colors of the sunrise in the photo. Consider color combinations when you’re showcasing photos of the big game (complement your team’s uniform colors) or spectacular fall scenery. ☛ingredients: Primary Power™ Palette, Cardstock (black), Fine-Tip Pen (black), Delightful Paper Flowers, 12-inch Straight Trimmer, Tearing Tool, Swirly ABC/123 Stickers (white), Tape Runner

Look for chances to show a whole series or progression in one set of photos. Try before/ during/after that big project. Or maybe go from soup to nuts in that special, fancy meal. Or, as in this example, show a special spot in all seasons. These series of photos make interesting and engaging comparisons and contrasts. And take a look at the paper tears above and below the photos. When you use your Tearing Tool on the darker paper, the white shows through for a “dusting of snow” feeling (perfect for a layout of Minnesota seasons!).

Contrasts call f a ention.

But another wonderful way to get interesting embellishments quickly is to simply embrace your imperfections and do it yourself! For example, most of these circles are torn, rather than cut. The result is “circles” with interesting imperfections and dimensions.

One person’s garden crop is another’s divine reminder. If a photo speaks to you, be sure to capture what it says. with a big heart. Every time I look at this picture of Mom when she was young, I smile, knowing that she has always been one of a kind. She spent hours coloring this black and white photo for her mother, after overhearing her wish for just one colored portrait of her daughter. The black and white one was all Grandma could afford. The photograph, red lips and all, was proudly displayed for years in her family’s home. Now, it takes a place of honor in my scrapbook. MULTIPHOTO OPTION

daily dose

Symptom: Lack of Mojo Prescription: A dose of Everyday Inspiration Have you ever sat down to start scrapbooking and found yourself looking at a blank page and wondering where to begin? The creative juices just weren’t flowing or you couldn’t find the right starting point to tell your story. You went through your mental checklist or maybe your shoebox of photos, thinking about all the major holidays, birthdays, celebrations and still nothing was working. Perhaps the answer is not found there, perhaps it’s hidden in plain sight.

now have three different layouts based around something that you probably do a handful of times each day! Take that same view with many of your everyday tasks; try it with the laundry, and add a twist about the sense of accomplishment you feel when you peer into an empty laundry basket. Maybe this is the opportunity to share how difficult keeping a home, raising children and staying on task can be. The places you’ll find inspiration are as endless as your to-do list.

things as: the economic situation, how you’re saving money, the relief you felt when gas prices dropped or the anxiety when prices increased. Using the note about increased traffic, create a layout focusing on how much your city or town has grown and reflect on the “good ol’ days.” Lastly, a layout spotlighting your habitual tardiness can be an opportunity for introspective and a resolve to change a behavior or trait that you’re not particularly fond of and would gladly trade.

Inspiration does not always come like a bolt of lightening. It may not always be wrapped up nicely in the significant events in our lives. The answer may be as easy as looking at the last load of laundry or the meal you just cleaned up. Every day, handfuls of events occur that are scrap worthy. It is in the everyday moments that life happens, those quiet moments tucked in between the significant events and milestone celebrations. Never underestimate the power or purpose of your daily routine.

Speaking of to-do lists, look at yours not only as a list of tasks you must accomplish, but as a resource for your scrapbook pages. Any one of those “to-dos” could become the focus of your next layout. Use your list to help organize and remember your thoughts. “A Day-in-the-Life” page is halfway completed just by transferring the information from your to-do list onto a piece of cardstock or a journaling card.

How about that car you are in and out of 10 times a day – is it your friend or foe? Create a layout about the time in the car when you shared a conversation with your son about not making the volleyball team or your daughter struggling with chemistry. You can now look at even the most mundane and ordinary tasks, like the multiple car trips each day, as opportunities for inspiration.

For example, find inspiration in your family’s favorite meal. Create a layout spotlighting the main course, and add the recipe and a little history to top it off. Or the center of a layout could discuss the importance of the entire family sitting down together and sharing over a familiar meal. The story can take on a more heartfelt twist, by sharing how you feel about being able to provide for your family, to give nourishment and to show your love through cooking. Wow, you

92

Add a few photos of your regular stops along the way to enhance the visual story and you’ll have a wonderful snapshot of your life. Use your list to jot down little bits of information you gathered along your way. Note the gas prices, the increased traffic or the fact you’re always running five minutes late. When you have a chance to sit down and scrapbook, each one of those little scribbled comments can become a wonderful story. A layout reflecting the price of gas or any other daily item can be the launching pad to discuss such

Everyday moments can be the backdrop for your very best storytelling. The magic in living is taking notice of all the little things, all the daily events and encounters we find along the way. Document your home, your favorite places, the road most traveled and the road least traveled. We seem to have a way of remembering significant events and often do not need a lot of cues to help us remember our big birthday bashes, a family reunion, or a magnificent vacation. Maybe it’s because these events are so well documented. We are

These major events are important but only a small portion of our life stories. So much of who and what we are, our hopes and dreams, our triumphs and struggles, lie within the moments of each passing day; the minutes that form hours, which turn into days and months and years. The daily routines such as packing lunches, carpooling, well-wishes for a good day, the door opening with a loud, “I’m home,” homework, preparing meals, bath time, bedtime stories and the last kiss of the evening, are where the magic of life is

being lived. These are the stories you want to tell. When you open your eyes to everything around you, the possibilities are endless and you’ll see inspiration is all around. If you are only scrapping the major events – the vacation photos, birthday parties, firsts or lasts – then you are missing so many wonderful opportunities to tell your full story. The pages in your scrapbooks that celebrate the everyday moments, shared common experiences, along with insightful journaling, and photos capturing real life, will surely be cherished and greatly appreciated for many years to

come. These books will be the documentation of a family that lived and loved...every day. If we always wait for something significant to scrapbook about, we may not only wait a long time, but we would really be missing out on so many wonderful opportunities. It may just be the thought of a celebration or a beautiful sunrise that motivates you to get started.

Mom’s not ready for her little girl to grow up. This layout features photos of Emily, happy about turning 11. Emily’s photo montage was created online and printed on photo paper. But look again. The focus of this layout is not on Emily, it’s really on the journaling. The title “I’m not ready...” pulls the reader into the journaling where Mom expresses her feelings about Emily’s birthday, not the birthday celebration itself. “As I look at these pictures, all I can think is that I’m not ready for this. Not ready for her to be interested in boys. Not ready for middle school. Not ready.... I’m just not ready for any of this to happen,” Mom writes. ☛ingredients: Discover Power™ Palette, Cardstock (deep blue), Simple ABC/123 Stickers (white), Fine-Tip Pen (black), Tape Runner.

You never want to forget your senior prom. It's all about the dress and the way he looked when you walked into the room wearing that gorgeous dress. Capture the dress, the nails and your date, of course, in pictures and back them with a delightful paper that complements your dress. Make a slit in the paper to insert a collage of special moments. Accent the page with flowers made with the Friendship Micro Maker. It's a page fit for the queen of the prom! ☛ingredients: Delight Power™ Palette, Friendship Micro Maker, Custom Cutting System™ (circles), Mini Circle Maker, All-Purpose Scissors, Fine-Tip Pen (black), Round-Tip Pen (black), Tape Runner

Shamrocks were created using the heart-shaped punch from the Friendship Micro Maker, giving the page two stamps of approval. White Cardstock is a great choice to use as the background for the shamrocks, journaling, title sticker and hand-printed border. Two sheets from the Primary Power™ Palette are used as the background and accent color (pulled out from the photo). The three side-by-side photos with a scalloped paper edge highlight the page. 3 PHOTOS VERTICAL

The highlight of this paper is the distressed treatment on this photo – the key is to use a duplicate photo. Using sandpaper or an emery board, distress the photo and then trim using the Tearing Tool. To accent the design, cut out flowers from our Romance Power™ Palette. OK, you’ve heard it a hundred times, but sometimes a picture's worth a thousand words. Use a single picture on a page to tell the whole story. Small strips of paper bordered with a FineTip Pen add to the designs on the paper. Note: We’ve completed a statement by adding to the title sticker with ABC/123 Stickers. Remember When This is why we make albums in the first place. Sometimes we’re celebrating our good times. Sometimes we’re counting our blessings. Sometimes we’re sorting through our trials and challenges. But everything that goes into your album is something you want to remember.

Powerful pages are often built around a simple flashback to a moment that may not have meant much to anyone else – but that has stuck with you through the years. Let these ideas get you started. Then let your imagination go.
