S TO P THE SPRING SNEEZES AND SNIFFLES The first sounds of spring are traditionally the call of the cuckoo and the bleating of newborn lambs. This year, the sneezes and sniffles of Britain’s 12million hayfever sufferers are just as likely to be heard. Hayfever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, is a common condition affecting 15-20% of the UK population annually. It often occurs in association with asthma and/or eczema. It is caused by an allergic reaction to pollen, causing an inflammatory reaction. This triggers symptoms such as a runny nose, itchy, red and watery eyes and sneezing. The majority of people manage their allergies through antihistamines, which may or may not work very well, and can cause the feeling of being ‘sleepy’ or ‘speedy’, depending on which type they take. Nasal sprays containing small amounts of corticosteroids are also used. All of these methods do not offer a ‘cure’ but represent a type of long term dependency.


Chinese medicine has much to offer in the treatment of hay fever, as well as, in the treatment of eczema and asthma. All these conditions are the result of an over-activity of the immune system and one of the great strengths of Chinese medicine is in the regulation of the immune system. Modern published research on the effectiveness of certain herbal medicines for allergic rhinitis has shown interesting and positive results. For example, The Journal of International Immunopharmacology, found that not only did the nasal symptoms reduce, but an immunemodulating effect was shown through the blood tests – which meant that, rather than just suppressing the patient’s symptoms, as with steroid or antihistamine medication, a deeper more curative effective was achieved. A TO P TRAINING TIP TRY A COMPACT WORKOUT High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is one of the best known training methods for improving cardiovascular fitness and explosive power, however, recent research has shown that it is also one of the best training methods for burning fat and toning muscle, giving you that lean sculpted look. So what makes it so good? The most recent study, out of Australia, reported that a group of females who followed a 20-minute HIIT program consisting of eight-second sprints followed by 12 seconds of rest lost an amazing six times more body fat than a group that followed a 40-minute cardio program performed at a constant intensity of 60% MHR. Also, a study presented by Florida State University, reported that those who performed HIIT cardio burned almost 10% more calories during the 24 hours


following exercise than a steady-state group, despite the fact that the total calories burned during each workout were the same. As the principle of HIIT training is the same in whichever exercise you do (work at close to maximum effort for a defined, short time period, then recover for approximately 3 times that of the work time), you can change your workout every session whilst still achieving the same benefits. This will drastically reduce the “boredom factor” and help keep motivation to train much higher, and as a result, there is a greatly increased chance of reaching your goals. The HIIT principle also allows, if necessary, for a more specific workout if training for a specific event. You can also reduce significantly the amount of time on the treadmill, cross trainer or static cycle. The fat burning and fitness gaining properties of HIIT training have been proven to be equal if not greater in significantly less time than steady state exercise. It can therefore significantly reduce your workout time, thus meaning, you are more likely to adhere to a programme, than skip the gym altogether as you “don’t have the time.” Here at the fitness suite at the Corinthia, we understand that time is of a premium.
