BOXING FOR FITNESS Advice from the Fitness Team at ESPA Life at Corinthia August is upon us and summer is in full swing, for many of us the gym workouts/ running in the park & fitness classes have all increased due to wanting the perfect holiday physiques!! But what if you’ve hit a “plateau” – you just can’t shift that extra 6/7 pounds around your waist or bum... well maybe boxing is the next thing for you to smash through those barriers??? Not only is boxing an amazing cardio workout but a perfect core & strength combo – the possibilities & combinations are endless. From high to low punches, side to side punches, rotations, glutes activation, duck & weave, oblique crunches, sprints, skipping etc., so many exercises can be placed together to take your fitness to the next level with this. Due to the various punches a huge amount of the bodies joints and muscles are activated and firing - shoulders, chest ,triceps, back, core, quads to name but a few of these - whilst also increasing your lung and heart capacity to maximum levels. INVIGORATE THE SENSES Shirodhara Treatment Soothe and invigorate the senses and the mind with a Shirodhara treatment. Shirodhara (from Sanskrit origins, Shiras meaning head and dhara meaning flow) is based on the principle that the gentle, constant application of warm oil to the forehead stimulates blood circulation to the brain and is renowned for soothing the nervous system and inducing a deep state of relaxation. It is believed to reduce stress, anxiety, insomnia and headaches and promote mental clarity. COOL TIPS FOR SURVIVING THE SUMMER HEAT By resident Naturopath, Renée Blanchardt As much as we yearn for sunshine, when high summer temperatures come around we need to thrive in the heat. Here are some top tips to keep you refreshed and flowing through summer. • Freeze lemon or lime juice into ice cubes and add to cold water to enhance hydration. • Have a refreshing snack - Mix green apple, celery and mint for a refreshing, cleansing, and cooling snack. • Mix Rosehip and Cranberry juice - a traditional beverage to beat the summer heat, with a refreshing tart cranberry fusion. • Drink coconut water - coconut water is a natural hydrator and replaces valuable nutrients and fluids in the busy. It was used as a blood transfusion during the war as it is close to blood plasma. Rich in amino acids, vitamins and minerals it is the go to hydrating choice to beat the heat. • Combine fruit to green salads - choose from pear, green apple, strawberries, grapes, watermelon, or goji berries. Add freshly roasted or raw sesame seeds to compliment. • Start having smoothies as a summer breakfast alternative. Add antioxidant rich berries, one banana, flax seeds, with coconut water or seed milks (almond, pumpkin seed, hazelnut milk) with either water or yoghurt or honey to taste.


• Add pumpkin and sunflower seeds to salads to give a rich source of zinc which can be lost from perspiration in the hot weather. • Chose dark leafy bitter greens to support the liver function if you are consuming alcohol. Other foods to use for their medicinal qualities are asparagus or artichoke with lemon, olive oil and salt, or broccoli and cauliflower. • Take a cool shower before bed or run your pulse points under the taps to lower body temperature. • Try to go to bed early and rise early to catch up on sleep. BEAT THE HEAT WITH WATERMELON A Recommendation from resident Acupuncturist, James Mutkin In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), watermelon is listed in the herbal material medica. It has sweet and cold properties and helps to clear Summer Heat, which is a condition caused by the overexposure to hot environments. Watermelon (xi gua) in Chinese medicine relieves thirst, and promotes urination (mild diuretic). Although watermelon drains the toxic heat through urination, it also has the ability to replenish bodily fluids. The rind of the watermelon can be cooked into a tea, and it has a weaker effect at clearing summer heat but is a stronger diuretic. Another food to help prevent the effects of summer heat exposure is mung beans. They can be cooked into a tea or served as a soup. Take 15-30 grams of mung beans boiled in three cups of water for about 20 minutes and then serve.
