THE SUNSHINE VITAMIN Vitamin D is a rather unique vitamin. It is synthesized by the action of sunlight on the skin and is essential for the absorption of calcium in the gut and helps to maintain correct calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood. This is a pretty important role, considering the fact that it enables the normal mineralization of bone.
Without sufficient Vitamin D bone growth and bone remodelling is not possible and deficiencies can cause brittle or misshapen bones and osteoporosis. Skin cancer has become globally prevalent and one of the side effects of avoiding sun exposure and applying thick layers of sun-cream is that vitamin D deficiencies have become more widespread. It is thought that 15-20 minutes of suncream-free full sun exposure daily, to at least 75% exposed body parts is sufficient for adequate vitamin D intake. Factors such as alcohol use, intestinal disorders, obesity, and pregnancy are thought to increase demand; therefore it should become more of a priority in such instances. Vitamin D is found in very small amounts in very few foods such as fish liver oils and to a lesser extent in butter, egg yolk, milk, and sprouted seeds, meaning it is doubly important to ensure adequate sun exposure. Supplementation is the alternative for diagnosed deficiencies, particularly in sun-starved countries, or excessively sunrich countries where the sun is avoided due to its strength (such as Australia). The active form of vitamin D is D3, and this is the most appropriate format found in health food shops and pharmacies. The sun should start making an appearance soon, so do start trying to soak it up (responsibly of course) to top up those vitamin D levels. The benefits of vitamin D are well documented and include (other than the ones already mentioned) its antiinflammatory action, immune-regulating properties, and its potential for reducing the risk of some cancers such as colorectal and prostate.
