THE MANAGER
James Bracken
I'd like to personally welcome you to King George's for this important fa cup first round qualifying tie against sevenoaks town. I hope you enjoy the match. Last week’s loss to Brightlingsea Regent was hard to take. We keep saying this though. I’ve got to be careful that I don’t start to sound deluded, seeing something that perhaps isn’t there.
wrong. It’s easy to lose the plot over mistakes so we’ve addressed it the right way. I’m in full support of all the lads. They stuck to the game plan and approached the match in the right manner.
We probably had 70 percent of the possession. We attacked with purpose. We put lots of bodies in and around their box. But we never found that bit of quality in the final third that we needed to create more chances. Saying that, we’ve had a few good efforts. Kevant’s one on one in the first half, where his heavy touch saw it slip away. We had another where Dicko couldn’t sort his feet out quick enough and was caught by the defender.
After the first fifteen minutes when Regent came and had a go with the wind at their backs, it settled and seemed
Against Merstham, we entered their final third 49 times, but we never put any balls into dangerous areas. Today, we were able to deliver a few, but they didn’t fall our way.
We need that first win. I don’t care who it comes against. If it’s against Sevenoaks Town today, then that’s fantastic. But whatever happens, that win needs to come soon. We’re playing with confidence, but I don’t know if the belief is there that we’re going to score several goals.
It’s very frustrating and it’s become a bit repetitive. Last week was the first time I’ve pointed fingers at them in the changing room telling them to do better. I’ve watched the match back and I’m armed with the knowledge to see exactly where we went
away with a 3-1 or 4-1 win. Of course, that first win can - and will be a catalyst. Once we get one victory, I don’t think we’ll have a problem finding more. It’s just deeply frustrating when you realise it should’ve already happened. I don’t care if we play absolute rubbish today and win 1-0 because I’ll probably come away
"that first win can - and will be a catalyst. Once we get one victory, I don't think we'll have a problem finding more." only a matter of time before we opened them up, scored and gone on from there.
I think there’ll soon be a game where we hit three or four goals against someone. Last weekend really should’ve been that win. Or at Cheshunt, had we taken our chances we’d have come

from it happy. That’s where we’re at. We’re concentrating on the performances and we continue to put in decent shifts. But it isn’t three points or a win to put us in the next round of the Cup. So, if today is a bad performance but we win 1-0, I’ll take it. Enjoy the game.

THE boardroom
Stuart Tree
A warm welcome to you all for this emirates fa cup first round qualifying tie against sevenoaks town. I hope you have an enjoyable and pleasant stay with us. It’s FA Cup fever and we’re delighted to welcome Sevenoaks Town for their first ever visit to King George’s Arena in this 1st Qualifying Round tie. If today ends in a draw at 90 minutes, a replay at Town will be required, likely to be on the Tuesday evening. We’re usually used to already playing in the FA Cup by this stage but as we’re at Step 3, we enter one round later than usual, bypassing the Preliminary Round. Perhaps we could’ve done with that. A resounding 6-0 win over Croydon FC last season gave us that winning feeling we’ve been lacking since the start of the current campaign. It’s been a fairly light schedule for us considering how the league usually top-load the season with fixtures. Changes to the Velocity Trophy format means we haven’t had to feature in it yet, nor likely to until the second half of the season. That competition also gave us impetus last year with a 5-1 win over Westfield and a real confidence boosting 3-0 win at Carshalton Athletic in the early stages of the competition. However, this year sees the three Step 4 leagues compete in mini-league formats with the group winners progressing to the last 32, where they’ll join the 22 Premier sides. Sevenoaks kicked off their trophy bid this past week, whilst we’re without a Tuesday game yet again, having only one so far this term. Speaking of confidence, Sevenoaks Town will come here full of it following their 4-0 win at the weekend over Whitstable Town. Meanwhile, we’re awaiting our first
victory. It’ll come – we all know it. The performances have been worthy of it but just a lack of finishing prowess is costing us. How we came away from last Saturday with nothing is baffling. When your luck is down, it’s down. Hopefully, we’ll have a few back from injury (here’s looking at you Ollie, Hak) and not long away from ending a suspension (Gabs). I know James is always looking to improve things if it’s not working so don’t expect the Manager to rest on his laurels. We
reciprocal season ticket offer (half price entry) does not apply for FA competitions. Should we progress in the Cup today, our scheduled match away at Bishop’s Stortford will be put back until later in the season (a Tuesday night round the M25 – oh joy). Likewise, if we don’t progress but they do – which is the worst-case scenario. We’ll know more come 5pm this evening.
"we're awaiting our first victory. It'll come - we all know it. The performances have been worthy of it. How we came away from last Saturday with nothing is baffling. When your luck is down, it's down." know he and his team will be on it! It truly is cup fever here at King George’s this weekend. On Monday, it’s a real derby affair. Our Academy side will be in action here under the lights as we host our tenants, Kingstonian in the FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round. Admission is just £3 adults, concessions £2 and students/U18s get in for free. I know the boys will be absolutely delighted (I’m not using the word ‘buzzing’) for your support so do come down and give them the boost from behind the goal. The filling in the Casuals sandwich comes tomorrow as Kingstonian’s first team are also in FA Cup action at King George’s as they host Walton Casuals in the 1st Qualifying Round at 3pm. Please remember that our

There’s an FA Cup trip down memory lane for Corinthian’s exploits against some famous names and a look at when Casuals last reached the First Round Proper. We try to give you as much as we can for just £2.50 – long live the printed programme! Enjoy the game.

it's FA Cup Fever at king George's and Sevenoaks town are the visitors. they'll be brimming with confidence, scoring freely in their last league match.
T
oday is a real banana skin that needs to be avoided by James Bracken and Corinthian-Casuals – and that’s no disrespect to our visitors Sevenoaks Town. Naturally, the side in the league above, playing at home should be favourites to progress but Micky Collins Oaks will be full of confidence. They’ve already bounded over the first FA Cup hurdle this season, resoundingly defeating Burgess Hill Town 3-0. The Hillians were relegated from this division in April but now have last season’s top scorer here, Warren Mfula in their squad. And Sevenoaks know how to find the target, which is something evading Casuals at the present time. Last weekend they put four past Whitstable Town without reply to leave them three points off the top spot in the Isthmian League South East league. Their only defeat came to league leaders Cray Valley PM but have beaten Three Bridges 1-0 and drawn with another relegated side, Whitehawk 1-1. Their squad is packed with talent and all are capable of inflicting a
defeat on Casuals today should Bracken’s boys not be up for the challenge.
“I’d like to think that we’ll score more goals. I think that was the problem last year.
Sevenoaks are in their second season at the highest level in the club’s history. They made a good fist of their inaugural year finishing midtable in tenth. Now, they’re established and looking to kick on, making at least the playoffs to join us in the Premier.
“Defensively, we weren’t too far off it, a couple of games we were quite poor but we weren’t far off it, but we never scored enough goals at the right time in games to win them or draw them and that was our problem. “Stats don’t lie, so that’s what we’re looking to improving. The people that we’ve brought in, I think that’s going to happen.”
“We have to try to finish higher,” admitted Collins speaking just before the league season began.
And Collins has certainly added some weight to his squad, bringing in several players over the Summer. Check out the ‘Ones to Watch’ for a breakdown of their best.
“First one is always going to be don’t get relegated because that’s the remit, we don’t want to go down. “Can we finish higher than we did last season? Can we flirt with the play-offs? Sevenoaks Town, Step Four, flirting with the play-offs? Wowzers! You have to pinch yourself at times!
Whatever happens today, the winners will be grateful of a place in the next round and the pocketing of a cool £4,500 prize money.

THE PLACE
Sevenoaks F.C. was originally formed in 1883 and was amongst the founder members of the original Kent League, although they left the league after just one season. It is known that on 26 April 1893 they played Royal Arsenal, who were at the time the only professional team in the South of England, with over 1,000 spectators watching the game. In 1906 the club, now known as Sevenoaks Town, became one of the founder members of the Sevenoaks League. In 1951 Town amalgamated with another local club, St. John’s United, and became members of the Kent Amateur League.
The town of Sevenoaks in Kent has a population of around 29,000 residents. In 1902 seven oaks were planted on the north side of The Vine cricket ground to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII. During the Great Storm of 1987, six of those trees were blown down. The town was especially badly hit during the 1987 ‘Great Storm’ with just one of the seven oak trees left standing. They have since been replaced. Famous people to come from Sevenoaks include Strictly Come Dancing’s Anton Du Beke and those who lived nearby include H.G. Wells and Princess Diana who went to school at West Heath, Sevenoaks.
he played for them Harry Smith played youth football for Brentford, Chelsea and Gillingham, before signing for Sevenoaks Town, Sittingbourne and Folkestone Invicta. While at Folkestone he signed for Millwall in August 2016 making his debut in November scoring twice in an EFL Trophy game against Luton Town. He went on to play for Swindon and Macclesfield Town before joining League Two side Northampton Town on a three year deal this past summer. Smith was lauded for coming out about mental health and gambling addiction problems in 2018.

The Ground Sevenoaks Town play their home games at Greatness Park, Mill Lane, Sevenoaks. The club has been based at Greatness Park since its establishment in 1883. Upon their rise up the ranks, the club has carried out a significant amount of work to its ground at Greatness Park in recent years. Most notably, the Oaks installed a 3G pitch on their main playing surface in June 2017 and became known as The Bourne Stadium. Stands are located on the far side with two seated and one standing. There’s also another seated stand behind the goal, plus a small covered stand on the near side. Views across the ground and local area can be seen via the large bank behind the far goal.

Ones to Watch The Gaffer MICKY COLLINS – Micky joined Sevenoaks Town in 2014 and hasn’t looked back since. As a former player at Charlton Athletic, Millwall and Gillingham, Micky’s first big successes as a Manager came with Erith and Belverdere where he did the Kent League and Cup double in 2013. Moving to Greatness Park the following year, he made Sevenoaks into a force within the County. Winning the Southern Counties East League title, Sevenoaks secured promotion to their highest level in the Isthmian League in 2018. Micky also runs a carpet and flooring company.
BEN BRIDLE-CARD. Goalkeeper Ben started his career with League Two side Leyton Orient, before joining Maidstone in September 2015. He’s also featured for several Isthmian clubs including Whyteleafe, Sittingbourne, Greenwich and Faversham. Ben is a lead tutor on the Millwall Community Trust and the Millwall Lionesses Goalkeeper coach. Skipper BEN GORHAM is an experienced central defender who has spent time at a few Kent clubs including Herne Bay, Hythe Town and Canterbury City before joining Sevenoaks in the summer. Starting his footballing career playing for his University side, Ben graduated with a first and now enjoys a career as a Finance Analyst. Centre-half JACK MILES is a product of Sevenoaks’ youth system having come through the ranks at Greatness Park. The defender has been everpresent in the back four ever since making the breakthrough in 2016, making 37 appearances last term. FRASER WALKER (pictured) joined the Casuals in 2017 from Ashford United and played an integral
part in the promotion-winning season - despite missing the crucial spot kick in the playoff final shootout! The full-back notched up 27 appearances for James Bracken’s side before moving on to Sevenoaks Town around this time last year. He quickly established himself at the Kent club making 29 appearances. DANIEL CUMBER is a right back who gives everything in every game he plays. Has appeared for for AFC Croydon Athletic and Chipstead, where he was Player’s Player of the Year and rated as their Press Officer’s all time favourite player for the Chips. HARRY KINGDON is a defender who came through the Dartford Academy into their first team squad in 2017. Signed for Sevenoaks in the Summer and gives Micky Collins options across the back four, with Kingdon’s ability to slot in anywhere along the line. DAN PARKINSON is a holding midfielder who has a wealth of experience at multiple Kent-based clubs including Sittingbourne, Hythe Town and Cray Wanderers. Made the number 4 shirt his own

towards the back end of last season and scored the winner on the opening day of this campaign against Three Bridges. KYLE DE SILVA is a product of the Crystal Palace academy and made his debut in the FA Cup against Derby County on 7 January 2012. He went on to feature for Palace on several occasions before moving to Notts County and FC Eindhoven before signing for Bromley in 2018. The 25-year-old attacking midfielder joined Sevenoaks earlier this year. AINSLEY EVERETT. Another dangerous attacking presence is Ainsley Everett, who has been with Sevenoaks since last year, where he made his debut in the 1-0 win over Ashford United in October 2018. The winger counts East Grinstead Town, Dartford and Thamesmead Town as former clubs. TOMMY WHITNELL is an experienced midfielder who started his career at Millwall’s academy. He’s played for a number of South London clubs, such as Dulwich Hamlet, Welling and Cray Wanderers, where he achieved promotion. Whitnell joined Tonbridge Angels where he made 177 appearances since 2014 and signed for Sevenoaks at the beginning of 2019. BRADLEY SCHAFER is new to Sevenoaks Town this season having signed in the summer from Kent side Herne Bay, where he made over 100 appearances. Despite his age, Schafer is vastly experienced in the midfield and
will be tough to contend with. LOUIS COLLINS was top scorer in the Kent Youth League when he was approached for a 2 year scholarship at Scunthorpe United. Incredibly, he made his first team debut for Sevenoaks Town at the age of 13, playing in a pre-season friendly versus Guru Nanak. Son of Manager Micky Collins, Louis returned from Scunthorpe this summer to once again sign for Oaks preferring to play senior football over Under23s. FRANKIE SAWYER was grabbed the Sevenoaks Town golden boot with ease last season notching 22 goals in the Isthmian South East league. Frankie is a well-travelled striker who Casuals fans may remember from several times in opposition, not least the likes of Hastings United, Phoenix Sports and many more. Wherever he plays, has an impressive strike rate. Frankie works as a Business Development Manager. ALEC FIDDES is a 25-yearold winger who likes to get at defences and create chances from wide. After graduating in Philosophy from Bristol University, he trialled for Spanish side Amorebieta, and was with them for their Segunda B campaign in 2017. Fiddes, who has a Spanish mother, has National League South experience with Weston SuperMare as well as playing for our tenants, Kingstonian.

The Striker TYRELL RICHARDSONBROWN is a tall and pacey forward who swapped American Football with the Brighton Panthers for the round ball game, signing first for Fisher before going on to have spells at Kingstonian, Hastings United, Burgess Hill Town and Ashford United. Moved from Ashford to Walton Casuals in November 2017 and helped the Stags to promotion to the Bostik Premier Division via a play-off win here at King George’s in May 2018. Signed for Sevenoaks in the summer, moving from Horsham.

It was Groundhog Day once again for CorinthianCasuals as they suffered a third 1-0 loss this season, leaving them winless for August. In parallels to last year, it wasn’t until September 15th that Casuals achieved their first league win, away at Harlow Town. From there, James Bracken’s side had climbed as high as sixth by the end of November. It’s still too early to begin worrying about league positions. But Bracken will have plans to rectify the situation; the simple fact is the Amateurs are not scoring goals. Possession was good – probably one of the most commanding this season and work-rate is fine. As the Manager said after the game, had we already notched up a couple of wins, this would be put down to ‘one of those days’. And it was one of those days. Brightlingsea Regent were the visitors and snuck home back to Essex on a smash and grab raid that was gifted to them by a solitary mistake. Regent had started strong, looking to press for the first ten minutes but as the players settled, Casuals looked more threatening as the half continued. Reyon Dillon and Warren Morgan used

the channels to advance on goal. Sadly, there was plenty of endeavour but lack of a finish. Kev Serbony had the best chance of the half when he found himself through on goal, but one heavy touch was enough for keeper Charlie Turner to smother the ball. The second half started where the first had left off, with Casuals pushing forward. A fine cross from the left channel was met by the head of Nat Pinney, but despite its pace, was aimed down the throat of Turner. The heavens opened and the ball zipped off the surface, with too many through passes not finding their target. Mike Dixon made excellent progress along the byline and looked in a promising position to score but was denied by a Regent defender at the last. Whilst it was one-way traffic, the goals continued to evade Casuals. Then a brief foray for Regent into the box was cut out but Coskun Ekim but despite clearing his lines, erroneously overplayed it. Adam Hampson played a simple pass to substitute Ace Howell who’s scuffed shot bobbled over the line via the post. Despite a late flurry of corners for Casuals, one of which was almost bundled over the line, the visitors clung on for a vital win and left Corinth wondering how they’d come away with nothing.

e bring you all of the drama from last weekend - and there was rather a lot of it. It’s Ian Townsend’s league round up. Folkestone Invicta are sitting pretty at the top of the table after a late Johan Ter Horst goal enabled a smash and grab at the Camping World Community Stadium. The only two unbeaten sides in the Division were going head to head, and then there was one, as Horsham didn’t have time to find an equaliser. That one-nil win leaves Invicta one point ahead of Haringey Borough, who eased to a two-nil victory over East Thurrock United. Both goals came in the first half, Anthos Solomon after ten minutes and Georgios Aresti a minute before half time. Four hundred and twenty were at Coles Park to watch it. Another two-nil home win came at Hornchurch, where the home side despatched Wingate & Finchley to end the day as they started it, in third place. Joe Dickson got the first just before the break, Joe Christou the second midway through the second half. Carshalton Athletic are up to fourth, and the Robins have put their early-season blues behind them to follow two defeats with four straight victories. Both goals came early, Christie Pattison making Bognor blue after only six minutes, before the Regis boys were even more regretful when Jerry Amoo made it two after twenty one minutes. Carshalton climb to fourth. A Billy Bricknell penalty in the twenty fourth minute turned out to be the only goal of the game as the Towers took the points at Bowers and Pitsea to end the day in fifth, but we had no shortage of goals at Bishop’s Stortford, where the Blues and the Ambers shared five. Jamie Cureton, rather unsurprisingly, got two of them, and Ryan Charles the third, whilst Tom Hitchcock got an early equaliser for Cheshunt and Taylor McKenzie made the closing stages rather interesting by pulling a goal back three minutes before the end. are up to seventh, the Ambers are nineteenth. Two-nil was a rather common score, and we have another, as Worthing jumped up to eighth place with victory at Margate. Gate were impressive in picking up their first victory last weekend against Lewes, but the Rooks Sussex rivals were less charitable, Ricky Aguiar and Danny Barker getting late goals to give their fans a happy trip home. Four hundred and twenty were also at Hartsdown Park, but they weren’t the same four hundred and twenty who were at Coles Park, unless they were all accompanied by Doctor Who. Lewes began the day still looking for their first win. Yesterday Darren Freeman brought in three new players, and his side travelled to Leatherhead and went one better, bringing him four new goals. Charlie Coppola opened the scoring after nine minutes and Jordy Mongoy made it two seventeen minutes later. After the break one of those new signings, Martin Box, made it three- and although Eddie Dsane got one back almost immediately for the Tanners, Kayne Diedrick-Roberts made it four eight minutes from time. Kingstonian got their first victory at the season, and it came at Merstham, where they must be suddenly sick of the sight of Hayden Bird. The former Moatsiders boss saw his new charges get the only goal of the game three minutes after the break, and it game from the home side’s former captain, Tom Kavanagh. Finally, Potters Bar Town and Cray Wanderers got a goal each at the Pakex, and the crowd could have all turned up five minutes from time and still seen all of the action. Bradley Sach put the Scholars ahead, but just when it looked as if the points had done a disappearing act for Wands, Joseph Taylor got them level right at the end.

Inside the Programme... FA Cup Special
Bristol City FA Cup 1st Round - 1983 We take a look back at Corinthian-Casuals’two ties against Fourth Division Bristol City as they travelled to dulwich's Champion Hill and back to Ashton Gate in a remarkable tale of League vs. Non-League. One of the biggest stories of the 1st round of the FA Cup in 1983 were the Corinthian-Casuals fixtures against Fourth Division Bristol City. In the run-up to the first match, the press were positively swarming over the non-league club - one of the few remaining that had retained their amateur status. Manager Billy Smith, a flower seller in Covent Garden during the day, had recently helped turn around the fortunes of the club, and although they were not expected to trouble Bristol City, the romanticism of the tie was hard to ignore. Formed in 1939 after a merger
of the Corinthians and the Casuals, the amateur ideals of the club meant that their players weren’t paid and fitted in playing commitments around their various day jobs. The club were sharing Walton Road, home of Molesey F.C, but the 1,000 capacity was clearly not suitable for a home FA Cup tie against Bristol City. Dulwich Hamlet stepped forward to offer the use of their ground, but seeing as the Casuals were reportedly £6,000 in debt, the temptation to switch the match to City’s Ashton Gate left the club with a moral dilemma. Chairman T.R Liddle (known as “Tiny”) admitted that the decision
CORINTHIAN-CASUALS MATCHDAY PROGRAMME - 25
was hard, but eventually Dulwich was chosen as the preferred location. “We believe this (switching the tie) is not within the spirit of the competition and certainly not within the spirit of our club, which believes the ideals of sportsmanship and the game are paramount to monetary gains”. Classy stuff. As it would transpire, the club were winners both morally and financially, as a 0-0 draw - helped by the displays of future Crystal Palace cup finalists Andy Gray and Alan Pardew - gave the Corinthian Casuals a money-spinning trip to Bristol (reported to be worth £10,000).
Although they were easily brushed aside 4-0, with Howard Pritchard scoring a hat trick, CorinthianCasuals could hold their heads high, helping to maintain the traditions of the FA Cup as well as boosting the club coffers at the same time. Soon after, Corinthian-Casuals permanently moved to Champion Hill for all league and cup fixtures. Sadly, Billy Smith would end up taking over the reins at Dulwich. Despite Corinthian-Casuals’ achieving their joint best record in the FA Cup, progress to the 5th round of the Vase and a fifth position in the league, new ground sharing rules created by the Isthmian League saw the Casuals thrown out in 1983/1984 and subsequently, the club found themselves exiled in the London Spartan League.
side playing Dartford in the same competition. “I remember it well… plenty of good humour before the match and you could have a drink in the clubhouse before the game. It was held at Dulwich Hamlet’s ground as [Corinthian-Casuals’] own ground was not suitable to host the match.
The Ugly Side
“The City following, probably no more than 3-400 hundred, were on the side terrace and about 10 minutes before kickoff we noticed that some of the fans around us started to become agitated. Looking over to the end to our left we saw what turned out to be the Millwall mob gradually filtering into the ground onto the terrace behind the goal. From a few groups sidling in in groups of half a dozen or so it soon became a crowd of a couple of hundred or more.
A couple of Bristol City fans recall how certain moments became ‘ugly’ as Millwall hooligans ‘the Bushwhackers’ turned up specifically to clash with City fans supporting the team, despite their own
“When this group started to move en masse to the corner of their terrace towards ours ( there was no distinction between the end and the side - you could just walk round) the City fans charged down the 26 - CORINTHIAN-CASUALS MATCHDAY PROGRAMME
Terry Cooper’s Programme Notes Terry Cooper, Ex Leeds United championship winning full back and Bristol City’s manager between 1982 and 1988, wrote these kind words about Corinthian-Casuals in the replay match programme. I’d like to extend a very warm welcome this evening to probably the proudest club in Britain – Corinthian-Casuals. A few moments spent in the company of club officials makes you realise they were as big an influence in soccer at the turn of the century as Manchester United and Liverpool are today. The club itself is an amalgam of two London sides, Corinthians and Casuals. Corinthians were formed with the specific intent of providing an English team to take on and halt Scotland’s domination of British soccer. Membership was by invitation only and within four years of being formed in 1882, nine Corinthians were in the same England and in 1894 and 1895 the club provided the entire team which took on Wales. The Casuals were drawn from the top public schools and the two clubs joined up in 1939. Between them they have had more than 100 internationals in their ranks, plus Bob Willis, the current captain of England’s cricket team. The club insists on playing the game in the right spirit and the goalless draw at neutral Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday was a class example of how football can be played competitively and with scrupulous fairness. A bumpy pitch made life difficult for both teams, but Corinthian-Casuals are obviously a skilful side capable of turning defence into attack with one long pass. I don’t think anyone from Bristol begrudged the draw and I hope you’ll be generous in your applause to them this evening. One lady who deserves the highest praise for her
CORINTHIAN-CASUALS MATCHDAY PROGRAMME - 27
efforts to revive the club is secretary Clodagh Brown. I was astonished to learn that in a bid to raise money to keep the club going, she made a sponsored parachute jump having never so much as seen a parachute before. Corinthians’ manager Billy Smith admitted that he couldn’t have done it, but he did offer to catch her as she landed! What a game lass. I think I’ll have a word with our Beryl in the City Shop…

steps to confront them, leading to the frenzied punch some of our fans seemed to have anticipated - although the whole situation came as a big surprise to a lot of us. “The police waded in between the two groups and the whole fracas probably lasted no more than a couple of minutes. “If I remember rightly a nastier incident (reported in the local press on the Monday) was during the match when a couple of young City fans - about 15
years old - were quite seriously hurt when they got trapped by Millwall fans after inadvertently going in the ‘wrong’ toilet. “The atmosphere was hostile for the whole game not what we expected at Corinthian-Casuals at all - and people were as concerned with how they were going to get back to their cars safely as they were with match itself, which ended in a disappointingly boring 0-0 draw, rather than the goal feast we’d been hoping for.”
Andy Gray played for Corinthian-Casuals and Dulwich Hamlet where he was spotted by Crystal Palace manager Steve Coppell. Gray scored 51 goals in 242 appearances for the Eagles including a vital equaliser in the FA semi-final against Liverpool which helped them reach the final. They would also go on to finish 3rd in the league the following season.
Alan Pardew began footballing life with Whyteleafe and Epsom & Ewell before progressing to Casuals and Dulwich Hamlet. Pardew was signed by Palace from Yeovil in 1987 for £7,500. He helped win promotion to the top flight in 1989 and scored the winning goal in the memorable 4-3 FA Cup semi-final win over Liverpool. With 128 appearances for Palace, he’s since become their Manager.

u Maan returned to Casuals for his second spell after a long period away from the club, leaving for Leatherhead in 2011. But in his three years since returning under James Bracken, he’s notched up over 120 appearances and is a regular feature in the middle of the park. We caught up with Mu before one training session to get his thoughts, past, present & future. Tell us how you first got involved here. It was a long time ago. I started playing in non-league for Chessington & Hook United and went to Chertsey Town. I fell out of love with football for a year or two, but I knew former Manager Brian Adamson and called him up. He got me to come down here at Casuals and that’s when I got back into it. This is your second stint at the club. What made you return and what’s made you stay? Funnily enough, it’s a similar story. I’d come out of playing football and went to live in Dubai. When I returned, I called Brian, who was still here but not as the Manager. James Bracken had taken over, and Brian put me in touch with him and that’s how I got back into it. I don’t want to blow smoke up James’ a*se but I’ve been around non-league for a very long time, playing under a lot of different Managers and James is the best around. Man-to-man management is very important, and he’s got that skill-set in abundance.

CORINTHIAN-CASUALS MATCHDAY PROGRAMME - 33
This sounds odd but the game where I was sent off against Dorking Wanderers last season stands out. I genuinely believe that first 45 minutes was the best I’d ever played. The red card was harsh and if I’d have stayed on the pitch, we’d have won that game. The red-card was rescinded on appeal. I was so annoyed because we knew how harsh it was at the time. If you remember, there was a sending off for Dorking earlier in the match so I believe the referee has tried to even up the numbers. You recently tweeted about how proud you were to see the Iraqi flag amongst all the banners at King George’s. How nice is it for your heritage to be recognised by the fans? Another important factor for me is we don’t have any ‘big-time’ players. Everyone is the same. No one thinks they’re better than everyone else. As many know, we’re not paid so there’s no rivalry in what’s being paid to each other. No jealousy. There’s no looking down on players that might be paid less than you. They’re a great bunch of lads and in the three years I’ve been back, every single player gets on well with the others. You won’t find that elsewhere. You’ve become an integral part of the midfield in your time here and scored some vital goals, not least the last-minute equaliser at Cheshunt a fortnight ago. What ones stand out in your memory? The 2017 playoff semi final at Greenwich Borough immediately stands out. Although it took a deflection, it was such an important goal. I’ve scored a few vital goals. The last-minute winner against Greenwich here in the league that season after and even the goal at Cheshunt recently was great to get. We’d had a shaky start and I’d not been playing. I got my first start this season there and to get the point was very satisfying. What game do you think was your standout performance?
100%. Honestly, I can say I was so proud when I saw it. It’s a beautiful thing and not a lot of clubs or fans would recognise that. To see it displayed at matches is a great feeling for me personally. Fans often shout ‘Skip it!’ – for those who don’t know, just explain that to us? Haha. Skip It is a company that my brother owns, and who I work for. I drive the van with the company name on everywhere I go, so they see the big ‘Skip It’ logo and shout it. Good bit of free advertising really. Putting you on the spot now. Who’s the best player you’ve played with at your stints at Casuals? Last season, although he only really came into the squad towards the end – Majed Osman. When he came into the side, he really stood out. I also play centre-midfield with Coskun Ekim. He’s naturally gifted, and he’s got to be up there with the best. And what about the best player you’ve played against? Jason Prior. I’ve come across him a few times. First was whilst I was at Leatherhead and he was at Bognor Regis. He wins everything in the air. You

can tell how good he is, he stands out like a sore thumb. Even now, years later when we played against him at Dorking, he scored twice. A cut above the rest. You’re an experienced head in the changing room now and have played at this level many times for different clubs. What’s your advice to a new lad coming into this level for the first time? My advice would be not to take criticism too personally. Football is all about confidence. We all have good days and bad days and when you have the latter, you might question yourself. Regardless of how you play, forget it and move on to the next match. That’s how I always approach it. If you have a great game, there’s a chance you’ll come into the next fixture over-confident – ‘I can do whatever I like’. And it can easily swing the other way – where you’ve had a poor game, but the gaffer still starts you. Now, you’re nervous hoping to perform better. So, start everything fresh, believe in yourself and don’t take criticism personally. It’s the FA Cup today - the World’s most famous domestic cup competition. Does it mean much to you as a player to say you compete in it? Of course. It means a lot. I know we personally haven’t had a great run in it here, but I know so many players around non-league who’ve been on a big cup run, making the first round proper, etc. That’s a huge thing for them. Players at our level rarely get to taste competition at that standard. But despite what round it is, qualifying, preliminary rounds, to still be involved in one of the most prestigious cups in not just England, but the world is huge. Hopefully we can get on a run and see where it takes us. When you think about it, there’s only four games to get to the first round but it’s tricky. You either face sides from lower level and go into the match overconfident. They’ll be up for it, and if you’re not, you’ll be found out. Conversely, teams above will take it professionally and have the ability to knock you out. So, it’s tough – but an amazing competition to be a part of. Did you know much about the history and importance of the club’s standing in the game when you joined? What do you think is the most remarkable thing about it all? I’ll be honest – when I first joined, I didn’t know much at all. The first

"despite what round it is, qualifying, preliminary rounds, to still be involved in one of the most prestigious cups in not just England, but the world, is huge." spell at Casuals wasn’t for long as I got a move to Leatherhead shortly after so didn’t get the chance to learn. But the three years since I’ve been back and watching the BT Sport documentary ‘Brothers in Football’ I’ve found out how special this club is. The fans are great. You never hear any criticism from them – win, lose or draw. I’m not just saying this for obvious reasons, but I truly believe they are the best fans I’ve played under. What can this team achieve this season? A lot. With got a mix of experience with youth and James always brings in quality. Some teams don’t always have a strong squad. They have a good first eleven and lack support from the bench. The whole squad here – even players that have been left out, are strong. Despite our start I personally feel once we get going, we can match any side in this league. As the gaffer says, we’re hoping for playoffs. It might be a big ask but as you know in this division, if you get on a run of five or six wins unbeaten, you’re right up there, in the mix. I always aim high, so playoffs are the goal.
