Meet the Mommas !

Kristi Corley founder/owner/editor-in-chief

Elisabeth Nixon creative director/photographer

Kristi is momma to three kids, ages 7, 10, and almost 12 (going on 16). All three were natural births and nursed for a year. Kristi’s informal title is “today’s modern doula”, encouraging the new or pregnant momma to embrace every minute of this exciting chapter in their life. This rustic, modern momma loves a mellow morning on her patio with a fire in the outdoor fireplace, listening to Billie Holiday on pandora.com.

Elisabeth is mama to three kids, two of whom spend the majority of their time as “Luke & Leia Skywalker”. Elisabeth had three C-sections and nursed all three of her children until they quit on her - cold turkey each around 7 months, leaving her quite uncomfortable. Elisabeth is a photographer in the Central FL area and enjoys eating ice cream daily.

Jen is mom to six kids, aged 5 through 12. Six epidurals, six nursing babies. Some nursed a few months, some through a year. Did i mention SIX kids? Can you imagine the amount of diapers Jennifer has changed! Jennifer prefers *momma but would probably answer to any child talking!

Heather is a single *mama to a darling two year old daughter. Heather accomplished a natural delivery, with an awesome support system and doula by her side. She nursed for six months. Heather brings a fresh perspective on how she incorporates dating with toddlers!

Kim had each of her three boys at home, naturally. She nursed each baby just past a year. Kim home-schools her boys, so getting out of the house on a Saturday morning to go garagesaling is her moment of happiness! Kim prefers momma.

Angel would have taught aerobics up until her due date, except her midwife thought otherwise, considering she had started to dialate with 4 weeks still to go! Angel has 2 kids, 10 and almost 12. She nursed them both for a year. Angel prefers momma.

April is a *mama to two adorable little boys. Both were C-sections. Her first nursed for 10 weeks, and the second for 7 monthsa great accomplishment considering she is a busy workin’ mama at Delaney OB/GYN.

Elisabeth is a mommy to her one year old daughter. She was induced and definitely chose the epidural! She breast fed and bottle fed for 5 months, then transitioned to formula. Elisabeth *prefers momma!

Vickie’s world doesn’t slow down too often as her 4 kids keep her busy! Between dance, sports, and her own work, she still finds time to whip up a fresh batch of cookies or tasty snack. Her L & D was diverse - from natural, to staydol, to epidurals! She nursed each baby a year. Vicki prefers mama!

Tracy’s kids allow her to experience it all... her oldest is 18, middle is 8, and youngest is 3! Tracy can offer a plethora of advice! She had 1 vaginally, 1 emergency C-section, and the last as a planned C-section. She breast and bottle fed until 5 months. She’s our foodie *momma!

everyone has a story I’ve learned something over the last 12 years about new mommies – everyone has a story! Pregnancy-cravings stories, lengthy stories about labor and delivery, and stories about baby accomplishments. Network TV thrives on reality shows: birth stories, ultimate nannies, 15 kids and counting, and so on. I’ll bet you could put 5 new mommies in a room - complete strangers! – yet each one would be proud to tell every detail of their own story. I guess I have a story, too. Yes, I have the details of my own labor and delivery stories for each of my three kids. I have many stories of the silly things that they have said, the sweet, sappy things they’ve done, and the difficult days of handling my daughter’s health issues. I also have stories of my profession as a doula – how I’ve been blessed to watch countless babies come into this world and help new parents transition to life with a newborn. I love to help with their questions about breast feeding, giving baths, trimming fingernails, and – the biggest question of all – “how do I get my baby to sleep through the night?!?” I also have stories about the hard stuff. The stuff that isn’t easy to bring up in casual conversation – challenges in marriage, communication struggles with your spouse, even the story of coming close to divorce. But gratefully, I can also tell stories of healing, self-discovery, healthy relationships, and unconditional love. We can all learn from each other’s stories – yours and mine and the other writers’ of babyourself. I hope our stories in babyourself will connect with you, drawing you in and helping you feel a part of a community of moms. I hope you will see that babying yourself isn’t selfish; babying yourself renews you, allowing you to see your value as a mommy, even helping you become a better mommy! I hope our stories encourage you in this exciting, new, and sometimes challenging, chapter of your life. So pour a refreshing drink, prop your feet up, and get a little “you time”. You deserve to babyourself. And we’d be delighted if something you read in babyourself becomes part of your story!

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

babyourself asks...

What are your holiday

traditions?

We have two favorite Christmas traditions. First, we have a wooden Advent box with 24 little doors. Behind each door, I place a slip of paper with an Advent Bible reading and another slip of paper with a person or family we’ll pray for that day. Each night in the month of December, we read the scripture and pray for the people behind the door for that day. It’s a good way to keep focused in the midst of all the activity of the season. Our other favorite tradition is just pure fun! We have banana splits for breakfast on Christmas morning! It all started one time when I bribed my children to go to bed quietly and quickly when my husband was out of town. Their reward was banana splits for breakfast. They loved the banana splits so much, we decided it would be a fun thing to do once a year. So now we always have banana splits for breakfast on Christmas morning. -Jennifer H. As a single mother with a 2-year-old daughter, I am working hard to create new traditions. The most unique one – we wait until Christmas Eve to decorate our tree. On December 24, I open my house to family and friends, asking them all to drop by and “help” us decorate. Some bring ornaments as gifts; others simply stop by to enjoy the treats and holiday

music that I have filling the house. To close out the amazing day and really set stage for Christmas morning, I run a movie fest of all my favorite holiday movies! This event makes for such a special day and builds excitement for the next morning. -Heather M. The day after Thanksgiving, our whole family will head out to a Christmas tree lot to select the perfect tree. We look at nearly every tree on the lot to find the tree that has the straightest trunk and an even distribution of branches and needles. After we select our tree, we head home to get out the lights and decorations. Usually my husband and I get the lights on the tree while the kids hop up and down, begging us to hurry so they each can put their own special ornaments on the tree. The kids hang their ornaments on the lower half of the tree, while the top is left for me to decorate. Our tree is definitely hodgepodge, but the kids love to look at the tree and point out their ornaments to everyone that comes over.

-Vickie M.

We started the tradition of purchasing personalized ornaments for the kids. In the beginning, I picked out the ornaments for them. I would find adorable ceramic ornaments that could be personalized. Now that the kids are old enough to pick out their own ornaments, each year we take them to the store to pick one out that represents their likes or hobbies. As we decorate the tree, they get to find and place all of their ornaments on the tree. -Kristi C.

My husband has started a fun Christmas tradition for our two younger children. He randomly puts little gifts, like Dollar store items, in their stockings in the days before Christmas. He makes a big fuss about how the kids should check their stocking because he thinks something is in there. We pretend that Santa’s elves have left them there. The kids get very excited to find a little something in their stocking before Christmas. -Tracy G.

Since we ALWAYS travel at Christmas time to one set of grandparents or the other, we don’t have many Christmas traditions. One tradition we are starting, though, is to buy things from the Samaritan’s Purse gift catalog. Last year we chose to buy baby chicks for a needy family in a developing country, so they can have better nutrition for themselves as well as provide a better way for them to support themselves. Though I paid for most of it, I encouraged my boys to give some of their own money for the project. Garrett got so into it, that he bought $4.00 worth of milk for hungry children as well! I love taking some time to give before we receive! -Kim D.

It’s not really a “tradition” but one of my favorite things during the holidays are quiet evenings around the tree together. The house is dark, yet lit softly by the tree lights. The kids are usually calmer and we have lots of snuggles together as we read books and play. I’m so thankful I took the time to snap a picture of my daughter coloring by the light of the tree...these quiet moments don’t happen often but they are moments I cherish. -Elisabeth N.

Ask the Doc • Get out and Walk • To boob or not to boob

Featuring

Dr. April Merritt Angel Feltman Dina Saunders Elisabeth Nixon Photography

ASK THE

DOCTOR Dr. April Merritt Delaney OB/GYN

The number one question I get in my office around the holidays is, “How late in my pregnancy can I travel?” And by “travel,” most mean fly. I will preface by saying I am talking primarily about HEALTHY, UNCOMPLICATED pregnancies. So let’s talk about travel. Even more, let’s break it down by mode of transportation. Cruise ship: I start with this one because it’s easy. Not after 24 weeks. This is not a pregnancy thing; it is a cruise ship thing. They will not let you on the ship after 24 weeks. They will not let you near the dock after 24 weeks. Even if your doctor is on the phone for 30 minutes and talks to 3 different people (get the feeling I have been there?) they will not let you on the ship. They will, typically, be nice to you and refund your money. Airplane: Most airlines will let you fly until full term but some have more strict guidelines. I always tell my mommies: no heavy lifting over 10 pounds. This is a good time to practice your smile, place a hand on your belly and look for a strong guy to lift your bag for you. Walk every 2 hours. This should not be a problem as most pregnant mommies need to pee every hour or so. You need to walk because you need to keep your blood moving to prevent a blood clot. You should also always hydrate well. Some women go on a trip and don’t drink water because they don’t want to have to pee. You want to pee. It gets you moving and keeps you from developing dehydration. Dehydration is 12

babyourself • December 2010

bad because it can cause contractions. Everyone swells after a flight. Non-pregnant people handle the swelling well. Pregnant mommies don’t see their ankles for a few days. This is ok. You may want to get some compression stockings to travel in. My nurse (Her name is Gay and I quote her often) will tell mommies to be the last to board the plane. This keeps you from standing in line forever, which keeps you from being on your feet for long periods of time. Cars: The same rules apply as above but you really have to make sure to walk every 2 hours. In reality, if you are in the car longer than 2 hours, you might want to fly. Train: I hear it is a great way to travel. Bicycle: Why?

MOST IMPORTANT! Always, Always,

Always get a copy of your prenatal records and take them with you for 3 reasons: (1) Murphy’s law- if you have them you won’t need them. (2) It has your prenatal labs on

PHOTOS COURTESY ELISABE TH NIXON PHOTOGR APHY

Is it safe for me to travel? it and may save you a huge lab bill if another doctor, who does not know you, has to repeat them. (3) If you go to a hospital where your doctor is not located, you will need to prove prenatal care. Most important is your due date. A lot of management decisions can be made based on how far along you are. If you have no proof, they can do an ultrasound on you and base your dates on that ultrasound. The ultrasound will be less accurate the further along

DID YOU KNOW

you are in your pregnancy. So before your trip, ask for a copy of your PNR. It takes 60 seconds in our office thanks to electronic medical records. However, it may take a few days if you request from an office with paper charts. So please don’t ask for them 2 hours before your flight. Oh‌and a word on international flying. You should take your OB/GYN doctor with you. All expenses paid.

Always talk to your OB before you travel. Some women have high risks pregnancies (like pre-eclampsia or high blood pressure or placentas in the wrong place). In some cases travel may not be a good idea. Happy Travel and Happy Holidays! -Dr. April Merritt Delaney OB/GYN

Everyone swells in their feet a little when they fly? Pregnant mommies just take longer to overcome it! Try flying with light weight compression stockings to help with swelling.

to boob or not to boob Is that even the right question? BY DINA SAUNDERS

pparently the list of top five casual questions to ask a pregnant lady, for friends and strangers alike, includes, “Are you going to breastfeed?” When asked during my pregnancy, my gut instinct always compelled me to roll my eyes and reply, “Uh, hello?!?! Of course I am going to breastfeed.” If I had known then what I do now, it would have benefited me greatly to reply, “Did you?” If you flip open any World’s Best Pregnancy Guide, it is easy to find excellent information about how beneficial breastfeeding is to both the health of your baby and you. All of my research and cross-referencing while expecting led me to the same conclusion: Breastfeeding is a natural part of raising a newborn. Who knew that putting it into practice would be a whole different story? Looking back, I wish I had known that breastfeeding isn’t automatically natural and immediate for everyone. I wish I had known the right questions to ask my friends who started their families before me. I wish I had known that I would need a ton of support as I stumbled through the learning process. I wish I could have flipped open the page of one of my many books and found:

Since I did not find the words in print to help put my breastfeeding efforts into perspective, I am sincerely thankful for the support I received from mom-friends who shared their stories with me. It is amazing how even a few words of encouragement through an email or a chat over coffee can make all the difference in the world. My darling boy turned one in October and I can now say that I made it through a year of breastfeeding. I am thrilled and awed that my body was able to provide for my precious little dude this way. I also look forward to those opportunities I will have to share my experience – the amazement, the exhaustion, the occasional sheer panic and the joy - in the hopes that I can pass along some comfort and support to another new mommy. So when some person you barely know asks if you’re going to breastfeed, you may want to ask them, “Did you?”

mommies to get outside and walk!

Whether you are newly pregnant, in your second or third trimester, or even trying to get back into shape after having your baby, walking is easy on your joints and very beneficial. Walking outdoors in the fresh air with your husband or with friends can relieve stress and put a bounce back into your step. There are several beautiful parks and lakes with walking trails in the Central Florida area. One of my favorite places is Cranes Roost in Uptown Altamonte. When I was pregnant with my kids, I loved walking around Cranes Roost with my husband or my friends. The one-mile trail wraps around a beautiful lake. If you walk 3 laps, you have almost completed a 5k. Cranes Roost is a busy park filled with people walking, having picnics in the grass, watching concerts, enjoying the fountain, or feeding the ducks. Cranes Roost also has public bathrooms – perhaps the most important feature for the pregnant mommy to consider! The level paths are perfect for your jogging stroller. Staying fit during your pregnancy will not only help keep you healthy and alleviate unwelcome pregnancy side effects, but the more you stay fit during your pregnancy, the easier it will be to get back into your skinny jeans! So enjoy the cooler temperatures – go outside and walk!

he cool weather is finally here in Central TFlorida, so it’s a perfect time for pregnant and new

walking tips Here are some really important TIPS to remember as you are walking to stay fit during your pregnancy. drink

stretch

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your walk. Bring along a bottle of water to stay well hydrated. A good rule of thumb is to drink one cup every 15-20 minutes.

To prevent leg cramps, warm up your muscles with some easy stretches. Hold on to a chair or rail and practice your squats. This loosens up your hips, which also helps prepare for labor.

shoes Wear quality, properly- fitted tennis shoes. Keep in mind your feet can swell a whole shoe size in pregnancy. Wearing shoes made of fabric that can expand is something to consider if purchasing new shoes.

posture

pulse

Practice good posture. Stand up tall and tighten your booty. Wear a maternity support belt if your tummy feels heavy like a bowling ball. This will help take pressure off of your back.

While walking, your pulse rate should not go above 140 beats per minute. Try the talk test. Keep a conversation going with your walking partner, maintaining a steady pace without feeling winded.

cool down Remember the cool down period. Check your heart rate again, making sure it is not above 100 beats per minute for more then 5 minutes. Stretch again, and grab another swig of water!

From Dads To Dads by Patrick Hatcher

Pregnant Women:

I know this is a magazine for you ... I get that. But this article is for your husband, so take just a moment and tear or cut out this article for him to read. Put it somewhere obvious, like on top of the toilet seat, so you know he’ll read it. See, this page even looks manly. It’s been designed for dudes. Ok, now stop reading. The rest of this is top-secret information for your husband. Really, stop reading. No, I’m not kidding.

Guys:

PHOTO COURTESY EL ISABE TH NIXON PHOTOGR APHY

I’m hoping to give you a few tips to prepare you for the big delivery day. I’ve been there six times, and there is nothing like the amazing experience that birth and delivery are. It’s really incredible, and there are some practical things that will make the delivery experience even better for you both. If you remember only one thing, it’s this: WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES. You are going to be on your feet for a lot of hours. Plan ahead with your most comfortable running shoes or lightest pair of Rockports. You might even want to keep an extra pair of comfy shoes in your car during the final weeks of pregnancy in case your wife goes into labor early or with little warning. You’ll thank me later. After you get yourselves checked into the hospital or birthing center and your wife is hooked up to the heart monitors and other equipment, you are going to realize a few things: First: you are starving. There’s a tricky path you are going have to follow: your wife most likely will only be allowed to have ice chips or water until delivery. So you really don’t want to eat in front of her … that can get dangerous really quickly.

Before you head to the hospital, throw a couple of Snickers bars or other sugar and protein goodness in your pocket and then have a little snack on a bathroom break after you arrive. Remember, you are there to support your wife and do whatever she needs as she gives birth … it’s a major deal. But you still gotta eat. Second: you are freezing. The delivery and birthing rooms are often set at temperatures that would keep a side of beef frozen for winter. (It’s no wonder babies are sometimes blue at delivery.) You need to keep warm.

delivery. There were three or four different sized clamps and scissors and all kinds of cool stuff. I asked for them after that and the hospital staff was fine with my taking them home. I’ve used the clamps on all kinds of things from removing fishhooks (I catch and release) to holding a screw in place for a repair project in our home. If you are fortunate enough to score a set of these things, you’ll find all kinds of uses for them, especially the clamps. And how cool is it to leave the hospital with a new baby and some new tools?

The delivery and birthing rooms are often set at temperatures that would keep a side of beef frozen for winter.

But, whatever you do, don’t ask the nurse for a blanket - not only will it immediately get colder in the room, you’ll also get the evil eye for the rest of the shift.

Plan to bring a jacket to keep warm, even during warm months. If you are cold and shivering, you can’t be as big a help to your wife as she needs you to be. And if you give her a massage during labor, the last thing she wants are your cold hands on her back.

These are just a few items that could make the delivery experience a little easier and more enjoyable for both you and your wife. Of course, the most important thing is to be there with love and support for her during what will be one of the most amazing days of your life (or one of the six most amazing days of your life).

I prefer a fleece jacket, and have found that a jacket solves another problem you will run into: you’ve gotta sleep somewhere. If you are lucky, you’ll have a small couch that folds out into a bed. But I’ve also slept in two hard chairs pushed together. Your jacket makes for a nice pillow if nothing else is available. Third: you could score some free tools! Right after our third child was born, the doctor looked at me and said something amazing: “Would you like to keep the tools?” I looked at him with a puzzled look on my face as he explained. He said that the hospital threw away all the cool stainless steel tools used during

By Kim Daniels Illustrated By Kaitlyn B. Lane

Are we there yet? I’m hungry! I need to go potty!!

Does the thought of taking a trip with small children cause you to shake in fear? I understand! As the mother of 3 boys, I’ve had to figure out some sanity-preserving measures for those holiday trips and I’ll happily share them with you. Whether traveling

by car or plane, these tips will help keep everyone happier and will make for a more enjoyable trip. One of the most important components as you travel is entertainment. “I’m bored!” is not something you want to hear 20 minutes into a 6-hour drive. To combat this, I pack an entertainment bag for each child before we travel. I love a good garage sale, and I’m always on the lookout for cute little toys for this

purpose. Kids’ meal toys still in the package, action figures, and activity books are great finds for your child’s entertainment bag. If you’re not fond of garage sales, just pick up some of those great inexpensive toys at Super Stores or any of the dollar stores. The night before the big day, choose or ask your child to choose 2 or 3 of their own favorite toys for you to put in the bag, then add the new, purchased ones. My boys have learned to look forward to whatever surprises await them each trip. The goal here is that your child doesn’t play with or even see these toys until everyone is in the car traveling down the road. Newness is vital! Allowing the

kids to check out the new stuff ahead of time depletes the interest factor. Don’t let it happen because you want to benefit from every moment of blessed peace that those new things will bring! If your child is toddler age or younger, the entertainment bag is still great, but you may want to keep the bag with you and just give your child something new from the bag as needed. If he is too young, he may not be able to work zippers, open packages, or work the new toy. Also, he may accidentally dump the whole bag on the floor and that will be upsetting for both of you. As fun as new toys are, however, they won’t keep your child’s attention forever.

So on to Phase 2. Those of you who own a built-in or portable DVD player for your vehicle will no doubt join me in praising whatever genius came up with the idea. I have to say -- I don’t like the idea that a child can’t sit in a car for more than 5 minutes without being entertained by a video, but when it comes to a trip of any length, it is a HUGE help. To milk it for all it’s worth, I try to add variety to our usual viewing fare. I bring along a few of the kids’ favorites (those that they never seem to get tired of), but supplement with a few that I have either purchased, borrowed from a friend, or received from Netflix. An enjoyable video or two can allow you the chance to actually converse with your spouse or even take a catnap.

truck or a cow or a blue sign. 2. Identify the cloud shapes. It’s a lost art, and traveling is a great time to renew that imagination-generating activity. 3. Sing some your favorite songs together. “If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands . . . ”

My last tip for entertainment is really just a reminder. Remember all those travel games we used to play as kids before we had a DVD player and a Nintendo DS? Bring back some of those old traveling traditions. Such as:

The next area to be mindful of as you travel is comfort. An uncomfortable child is a whiney mess. When your child’s uncomfortable, everyone’s uncomfortable, so here’s a list of comfort measures.

1. If your kids are old enough, you can find the alphabet in the signs you pass. Even little ones, though, can find things in the scenery. Ask them if they can find a

1. Bring each child a small blanket. In my family, you can’t please everyone with one temperature. So we make it cool enough so no one’s hot, then pass around the blankets for those who are cold.

2. Make sure you pack plenty of good snacks. It’s a really bad idea to put your child on a sugar high when he’s trapped in a carseat or seatbelt. Bring munchies such as a small bag of dry Kix or other lowsugar cereal, raisins, small pretzels, etc. Oh, and don’t forget to have some water for them! 3. If you have an infant or toddler on the trip, do all you can to maintain his usual schedule. Impossible, I know, but little attempts can help a lot! For instance, make sure he eats meals when he should eat (snacks don’t count). Helping your child maintain a steady blood sugar level by eating regular meals really makes a difference in how he feels and as a result, acts. Also, at naptime try to at least have a quiet time by playing a soothing video or playing lullaby music. If you’re lucky, he might just fall asleep! Last but not least, the best thing you can do to make everyone happy is to arrive at your destination. To do that sooner, make your stops all they can be. If you need to stop to grab some lunch, make sure you put gas in the tank, take everyone to the potty, nurse the baby, buy more water, etc. There’s nothing more frustrating then pulling on to the interstate after a gas stop only to have little Johnny say, “I’ve got to go potty!” even though he said 3 minutes ago that he was just fine. Although you do want to arrive as quickly as possible, if you have a very long trip it still might be a good idea to let the kids play at the fast food play area. Those extra 10 minutes of running around will help them feel better and will boost morale in general. You can also stop at a rest area and let your kids dance, jump, or race to the tree and back. If you’re tight on space, you can pack a deflated beach ball, blow it up at rest stops for children to kick or toss or chase, then deflate it again when it’s time to get back in the car. Activity like this makes getting back in the car for a few more hours a little bit easier. So there you go. I don’t promise a trip that rivals the relaxation of the deck of a cruise ship, but I hope that my tips will help your next trip be smooth, easy riding.

Q&A

New moms are the best inventors! Their creative juices are magnified when

faced with the challenges of mommy-hood. Many times new parents will utter the words, “If only...” then Voila! - a new product is born! Right here in Orlando we have our very own mompreneur .When I first saw The Mommy Measure, I immediately said, “That is golden!” I couldn’t wait to talk to Pam, hear her story, and hear how The Mommy Measure went from an idea, to an international product. Here’s what I discovered. by: What is the Mommy Measure, and how did you create it? MM: My husband, Kevin, and I created The Mommy Measure out of necessity. When I was expecting my first son, I was always measuring my belly to see how much I had grown, and keeping little pregnancy notes in journals, post-its, you name it. We both thought it would be neat idea to create an “all-in-one” type journal where you could measure AND write in the same place, and at the same time, create a lasting memento of your pregnancy. After our son was born, this idea was our last priority. However, when I was pregnant with my second son, we decided to get the wheels turning on this idea, and here we are! by: Tell us about you, and how you incorporate a thriving business with your family. MM: We are two busy parents! My husband is a full-time teacher and Athletic Director at a local school, and I’m home with the boys, working during their downtime (which, 32

babyourself • December 2010

some days is non existent!). We both handle different parts of the business, which works nicely. I handle all of our PR and Marketing, which is a tough job when you’re home with a two and four-year-old! So, I’m proud of all the press we’ve gotten this far. My husband focuses on product/ website design, shipping/order processing, and the manufacturing side of the business. We

are extremely proud and excited that our business continues to grow, but at the same time, our main priority is focusing on our family and our kids’ needs first.

with by: How has Mommy Measure grown? MM: We launched our product in April 2009. Since then we’ve gained about 50 retailers (including BabiesRUs. com and Diapers.com) and a distributor in Europe and the Netherlands. The Mommy Measure is now available in four languages: English, Dutch, French, German, and we’re currently working on Spanish. We continue to receive a good amount of press and reviews from popular Mom/Baby/Parenting blogs and magazines, including Pregnancy & Newborn and Pregnancy Magazine. We’re also getting recognized in many European and Dutch blogs and magazines thanks to our amazing distributor. by: How does the Mommy Measure work?

MM: Don’t be afraid to put your name out there as much as possible. I started a Facebook fanpage for Mommy Measure and joined Twitter. It has been a great source of networking in every way (meeting new retailers, entrepreneurs, bloggers, customers, friends). Connect with other local mom or parent entrepreneurs and learn from each other. You will be amazed at the support and encouragement you will receive. Make sure to protect your brand name through getting a trademark/patent, and most importantly, be confident in yourself and what you’ve created. by: Where can we purchase a Mommy Measure, here in Orlando? MM: The Mommy Measure is sold at Hopscotch Boutique, Chloe Lane Boutique, and Amaya Papaya Play Lounge. Our complete list of US retailers can be found on our website, www.mommymeasure.com.

ALL PHOTOS COURTESY THE MOMMY ME ASURE

MM: The Mommy Measure functions just like a measuring tape, but is made of a softer, wider, writeable material. The 72-inch measure allows mom-to-be to track her belly growth (both fundal height and belly circumference) by measuring her belly, marking her measurement with a heart sticker, and document any pregnancy updates (for example: “20 Weeks Today! It’s a GIRL!”). After pregnancy, it can

also be used to measure baby’s first year of growth and milestones. by: Any advice for other Orlando moms with (what could be) another great invention?

< Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies Christmas Tree: Heading to a hospital to check out a Christmas Tree might seem odd, but we promise, this one is worth the trip. Since opening in 2006, this colossal and breathtakingly beautiful Christmas tree has been the hospital’s focal point during the holiday season. Located in Winnie Palmer Hospital’s stunning entryway globe, the tree’s 524 branches are adorned with 4,192 lights that radiate a total of 29,344 watts. It takes three days, 40 manhours and about 10 members of the engineering team to set up the tree, which was donated to the hospital by the Mall of Millennia shortly after the hospital opened.

At SNOW!, a North Pole Carnival, is packed with all-new holiday chills and thrills. Inside a massive, 10,000-squarefoot structure is 40 tons of real snow. There will be everything from a “Kiddie Snow Tube Run” and a snow play area to “Flip a Penguin” games and even “Elf Bowling” and “Ring Around Frosty!” You can spend time playing in the snow, trying your hand at the SNOW! themed carnival games, or sampling seasonal treats like snowberries, snow cones, cotton candy and hot roasted chestnuts.
