PENITENTIARY COMPETITION - LA BRENAZ / 2012
COMPETITION 4th PRIZE / ATELIER D’ARCHITECTURE 3BM3 S.A.
project: Fabrice Corminboeuf - Bruno Ferraz

The project proposes to organize the program the length of a vertebral column, functionally and symbolically. It allows both the interconnection of different activities of the detained subjects prisoners, staff, and visitors; and it reveals the path of social reinsertion that accompanies the prisoner throughout his stay. The landscape project embodies this path of reinsertion. It incites the detained, throughout his incarceration, to reflect on his actions and to adapt himself to the evolution of his sentence and its conditions. As the journey progresses, the project aims to create a link (visual, physical, olfactory), with the exterior, erasing progressively the notion of the limit set by the fence. In the exterior grounds, a small grove faces the building, a landmark that is visible with every walk, and serves as a link with the exterior world. As the trees evolve with the changing seasons, they reflect the progress of time, reminding the prisoners that beyond the fence freedom awaits them.

In the beginning of the sentence, the courtyard (promenade d’accueil) is known as a meditative place; a space meant for introspection. Slowly, with the evolution of the sentence, natural spaces become more prominent in the daily surrounding of the prisoner. While at first its presence was only visual, nature eventually becomes more concrete: tactile and olfactory.

Won 2nd place in a competition. The client assigned two appartment bulidings to my office, one of which I was under my direction. We worked together with two other offices (1st and 3rd place winners) to coordinate concepts and details for the neighborhood construction. I worked as a project leader on a 56-appartment building developing concepttypologies, coordination with technical engineers and work site management.

HOUSE IN COCHABAMBA
CAMACHO HOUSE IN COCHABAMBA, BOLIVIA / 2004 project: Fabrice Corminboeuf and Ana Justo Situated in a residential zone, 3 miles from downtown Cochabamba, Bolivia, the construction of this house had been initiated 30 years ago, following a serial model repeated throughout the neighorhood. The house was never completed, and was found in a ruined state. Through this intervention, I collaborated with another architect to preserve part of the existing structure (foundations, several structural walls and beams), while at the same time correcting problems of natural light and ventilation that resulted from the orientation adopted in the original project. The internal spaces were modified to provide a better connection to its surrounding context. For example, half of the roof was elevated to provide ample natural lighting and a subtle connection to the sky, while the other half of the roof was adapted into an open terrace to contemplate the panoramic mountanous landscape. As project leader, I opted to use local techniques of construction, guided by the input of the local workers. Materials that were locally manufactured where also used whenever possible. Given that the city is situated between the two main regions of Bolivia (La Paz and Santa Cruz), the choice of local materials had a deep impact on the project, primarily using stones from the Altiplano and wood from the Amazonic region of Bolivia.

PROJECT FOR A PRIVATE HOUSE
MUSEUM OF ANCIENT ART in Lugano
MUSEUM OF ANCIENT ART IN LUGANO, SWITZERLAND / 2003
DIPLOMA PROJECT / ACCADEMIA DI MENDRISIO
project: Fabrice Corminboeuf - Atelier Valerio Olgiati This project is characterized by the strong topographical inclination of the site and its dense vegetation. The museum integrates itself into the surrounding landscape: a network of natural, pre-existing paths. By following these paths in the forest, the walker begins to perceive, through the trees, glimpses of translucent and luminous glass. The paths transform into stairs that lead to a platform, allowing the visitors to enter the museum surrounded by an open view of the landscape and the Lake Lugano. The esplanade allows the visitor to orient him- or herself to the enviroment before diving into the ancient world.

The guests descend among the platform, arriving first to a space with limited lighting. There they would find the entrance, the cafeteria, the diverse museum equipment; a sort of preface to the actual museographic space. It serves as an interface between the historical time of the objects showcased and the present. One level below is the gallery for the temporary exhibitions, a wide space that allows flexibility for the arrangements of future exhibitions. While the entry level creates a feeling of enclosure through the space (low ceiling), lighting and materials (concrete), the middle level creates a sensation of suspension through glass blocks and concrete. The lowest level is the space for small size provides a more intimate fusse lighting from its “6 façades”, lessness, leaving actual time and where the entry and the passage
