JEAN-DOMINIQUE BURTON Né à Huy, le 13 octobre 1952 (Belgique). Sa fascination pour l’image le mène vers la photographie. Actuellement, il poursuit son travail sur les multiples aspects de la civilisation africaine. Il a exposé en Europe, en Afrique, en Amérique du Nord et en Asie. Pour Hamaji Magazine il signe : Chasseurs Nagô, Royaume de Bantè. He was born in Huy on the 13 October in 1952 (Belgium). His fascination for the images leads him to photography. Currently, he continues his work about the various aspects of African civilization. He has exhibited in Europe, Africa, North America and Asia. For Hamaji Magazine he realises: Hunters Nago, Kingdom of Bantè. ROBBERT KŒNE Robbert Koene a développé une connaissance approfondie sur l’Afrique australe. Au fil des années, il se découvre une passion pour la photographie d’intérieur, les paysages et les peuples. Grand voyageur, il signe également des sujets magnifiques sur ses différents voyages à travers le monde. Robbert Koene has developed an extensive knowledge of the Southern Africa. Démocratique du Congo depuis bientôt 30 ans. Il réalise des reportages pour le voyage ou le monde animalier. Pour Hamaji Magazine il signe un sujet sur le Majestic River au Congo Jean-Luc Delsemme has been a freelance photographer in the Democratic Republic of Congo for nearly 30 years. He produces reports about travel and the animal world. For Hamaji Magazine he realizes a report about the Majestic River in Congo. PAUL BERTIN Découvre la photographie à l’âge de 14 ans. Pour la Croix Rouge française, il couvre de grands évènements humanitaire comme le cyclone Hugo ou la chute des Ceausescu en Roumanie. Il travail pour le monde de la mode et illustre quatre livres édité chez Flammarion. En 2001 il est lauréat du prix du jury Noir et Blanc Ilford. He is passionate about photography since the age of 14 years old. For the French Red Cross, he covers major humanitarian events such as Hurricane Hugo or the fall of the Ceausescus in Romania. He works for the fashion world and illustrates four books published by Flammarion. In 2001 he won the Black and White Ilford Jury Prize. BENOÎT BARRAL Photographe et passionné par le continent noir, Benoît sillonne l’Afrique pour son travail. Pour Hamaji Magazine, il signe un sujet magazine sur l’exploitation du terril de Lubumbashi. Il vit aujourd’hui en Ouganda. Photographe and impassionnated about black continent, Benoît travels accross black continent pour his work. For Hamaji Magazine, he realizes a

magazine subject on one the treat part of the Lubumbashi slag hill .He lives in Uganda. EMMANUELLE MORDACQ a toujours voyagé et a vécu dans plusieurs pays différents. Viceprésident marketing chez Accor Hospitality, elle crée les marques d’hôtel Pullman et MGallery dans le monde. En 2011, elle a fondé l’entreprise de marketing PLACES. Elle est web-rédacteur en chef de Néoplaces.com, dédié aux endroits innovants. Emmanuelle Mordacq has always been travelling and has lived in several different countries. Senior Vice-President Marketing at Accor Hospitality, she created world hotel brands, Pullman and MGallery. In 2011, she founded the marketing company PLACES. She is web-editor of neoplaces.com, dedicated to world’s innovative places MARIE-AUDE PRIEZ Editeur depuis plus de quinze ans, Marie-Aude Delafoy est aussi auteur. Originaire du Mali elle a passé sa vie en Côte d’Ivoire, sa terre natale. Par son travail, elle est un porte parole engagé du continent noir, de ses peuples, de leur culture et leur patrimoine. Il n’y a que huit chambres, qui offrent toutes une vue sur la mer – qui est d’ailleurs à deux pas de l’hôtel. La créativité inspirée d’espaces publiques se reflète dans le décor des chambres. La nuit tombe sur Mbandaka, la capitale de la province de l’Equateur. Pour la première fois depuis dix jours nous descendons à terre. Les autorités locales font honneur au Majestic River. Discours de bienvenue, danses folkloriques… Voici le terme de notre voyage. Les paysages changent. La forêt qui borde les rives semble de plus en plus impénétrable. Bientôt l’estuaire de la Mongola et l’heure de vérité: aucun un bateau de cette taille ne l’a remonté. Nous sommes tous sur le pont. La rivière paraît si étroite. On croirait les villages de pêcheurs à portée de main. Le fleuve est en fête. L’arrivée du Majestic River s’est répandue au fil de l’eau. Akula enfin ! Sur le port, tous attendent depuis des heures. Le Majestic River a relevé le défi.

More than 1100 km, we will travel up-river on a tributary of the congo river: the mongala. A big challenge for the majestic river. The boat is an incredible monster. 45 meters long, three bridges. The first offers cabins that ensure an optimal comfort. The second is the heart of the social life of the Majestic River. His bar, lounges and dining rooms, terrace...

A water treatment plant is installed on board and produces eight hundred liters of drinking water per hour. A luxury. On the food and drinks supply side, we won’t lack anything. Behind the stoves are operating some of the best chefs in Kinshasa. Here, the rare boats make the show. Barges that arrive safely by miracle. Families live on wooden rafts. Carried by the river, they will reach the port of Maluku where they sell their goods. In the immensity of water where the only islands that are scattered on the river are all shorelines, life flows peacefully. Since the villages of huts on stilts, fishermen’s children are waving their hands. On the river, the drum also works. Canoes come to us. Fish, vegetables, everything here is organic. The spectacle of the river life pace our days. A cigar, a last whiskey or beer on the deck to listen to the silence of the African night. Then the sleep comes to pick you. Tomorrow is another day... Ecuador is in sight. The faithful of Mamy Wata organize the crossing of the line. An easy-going initiation ceremony is formalized through the delivery of a diploma. Night falls on Mbandaka, capital of the Equateur province. For the first time in ten days, we go ashore. Local authorities honor the Majestic River. Welcome speech, folk dances ... ROYAUME DU BANTÈ, LA LÉGENDE XIVe siècle. Les autorités du Village de Bantè envoient des émissaires à l’Est, sur les rives du Niger inférieur, à la recherche des Yorubas. Redoutables chasseurs, la réputation de ces derniers dépasse de loin les frontières de l’actuel Nigéria. Bantè est alors en proie aux ravages d’un couple d’aigles, s’en prenant aux nouveaux-nés qu’ils enlèvent et dévorent. C’est un chasseur Nagô, sousgroupe de l’ethnie Yoruba, qui en délivre les villageois. Les aigles sont tués, tâche dont un seul chasseur exceptionnel pouvait s’acquitter. Le héros de Bantè, Obiti, est originaire de Kobagbe, un village de la région de la Cité sacrée d’Ilé-Ifè, berceau de l’humanité selon la légende Yoruba. En remerciement, le Village de Bantè s’offre à lui, désormais Roi protecteur, qui s’y installe en compagnie de sa famille. C’est ainsi que naquît, selon la tradition orale, la dynastie Nagô de la Forêt sacrée.

Le royaume a survécu aux aléas de l’histoire, bien qu’il semble avoir été interrompu à plusieurs reprises. Il est aujourd’hui administré par son dixième Roi Ade-Fouiloutou Laourou. Par son isolement géographique, en plein cœur de la Forêt de Bantè, et par le microcosme culturel qu’il forme, Bantè conserve un héritage traditionnel unique, magnifiquement préservé d’influences nigérianes, burkinabées, nigériennes ou maliennes. Les Chasseurs Nagô du Royaume de Bantè forment une confrérie de chasseurs placées sous l’autorité du Roi

FOURTEENTH CENTURY. BANTÈ KINGDOM IS THREATENED BY A PAIR OF EAGLES THAT PREY ON NEWBORNS. A Nagô hunter delivers the village. Obiti, the hero, now King protector, moved to Bantè. Thus was born, according to oral tradition, the Nâgo dynasty of the sacred Forest. Composed of twenty-seven villages and administered by its tenth King Ade-Fouiloutou Laourou, the kingdom survived the vicissitudes of history. Very isolated, Bantè maintains a unique traditional heritage, beautifully preserved with multiple influences: Nigeria, Burkina-Faso, Niger and Mali.

LES PLANTES Les Chasseurs sont les dépositaires d’une tradition riche et intimement liées à la forêt. Ils conservent notamment une connaissance exceptionnelle de traitements à base de plantes médicinales. LE VODOUN La communauté Nagô de Bantè pratique le Vodoun. Ogou, divinité du fer, y tient une place majeure. L’art divinatoire désigne et confère à un Chef Chasseur la puissance de son prédécesseur, non le Roi ou quelque autre autorité administrative. 30 I HAMAJI

Le terril est à Lubumbashi ce que Big Ben est à Londres ou la tour Eiffel à Paris. Un emblème qui domine la ville de sa hauteur, qui lui donne sa fierté et son identité. A l’instar du patrimoine industriel des vieilles régions européennes, en Angleterre, en Belgique ou en France, le terril, loin d’être considéré comme une scorie dans le paysage, rappelle au contraire un passé glorieux. The terril is in Lubumbashi what Big Ben is in London or the Eiffel Tower is in Paris. An emblem that dominates the city by its height, which gives it its pride and identity. Like the industrial heritage of the old European regions in England, in Belgium or in France, the terril, far from being considered a slag in the landscape, has instead a glorious past. HAMAJI I 35

LE PASSÉ DES PIONNIERS, DE LEUR LABEUR, UN PASSÉ DE RICHESSE ET DE GRANDEUR : le terril c’est l’accumulation sur des années -de 1924 à 1992- de matière extraite du sol katangais. C’est la preuve du colossal travail abattu par les miniers de toutes origines. C’est une pyramide moderne arrachée au riche sous-sol de la région, aux mines de l’Etoile, de la Ruashi et de Kolwezi en particulier : l’éventail entier des minerais dont a besoin l’économie mondialisée pour fonctionner se trouve au Katanga, et a fait une grande partie de la richesse du Congo Belge, du Zaïre, de la République Démocratique du Congo. Et explique également les soubresauts qui ont pu agiter un Katanga désormais largement pacifié. Le terril c’est ainsi un hommage au passé, mais pas seulement. Car la région est résolument tournée vers l’avenir, et se veut à nouveau moteur de l’économie congolaise. Ambition illustrée par deux personnages centraux du Katanga, Moïse Katumbi, gouverneur de la région, et George-Arthur Forrest, notamment propriétaire de la STL, la Société du Traitement du Terril de Lubumbashi. Cette montagne des faubourgs de la ville connait une seconde vie, depuis que des techniques modernes permettent dorénavant de réexploiter ses scories : de ses 14,5 millions de tonnes le tiers en est récupérable. L’exploitation, qui a recommencé en 2000, devrait perdurer jusqu’en 2020 au rythme actuel : 800 tonnes de scories sont en effet traitées chaque jour, dont on sort une centaine de tonnes d’alliage (65% de fer, 18% de cobalt et 10% de cuivre), pour une production annuelle avoisinant les 5 500 tonnes de cobalt et les 3 500 tonnes de cuivre. Environ 250 tonnes sont exportées chaque semaine, via Dar-es-Salaam, vers une usine de

ARTISTE RECONNU, COTÉ, EXPOSÉ EN EUROPE, MAÎTRE NSHOLE CONTINUE À METTRE EN AVANT LA CHALEUR D’AFRIQUE. IL SE VOIT COMME UN GARDIEN DES TRADITIONS : « J’AI DES DIFFICULTÉS À ME DÉTACHER DE MON ENFANCE, DE MES RACINES ». Nshole explique avoir été « très pauvre » ; à onze ans. Un jour que sa mère n’avait pu leur apporter leur repas à l’internat, il proposa avec son grand frère, au bluff, sans savoir-faire ni expérience, sans peinture ni pinceau, de peindre la devanture d’une petite épicerie en échange de boites de conserve. Un troc « décoration contre nourriture ». Des cours de dessin à l’école, d’heureux hasards, beaucoup de cœur et un talent énorme l’ont amené à être l’artiste majeur que l’on sait et qui avoue encore pouvoir observer pendant une heure un tableau, dans son atelier, « pour comprendre quel est le mystère ». Cette spiritualité de l’œuvre ressort dans le triptyque majestueux Élévation, mais ne doit pas faire oublier son sérieux confinant à l’obsession, Nshole passe tous les jours dix heures dans son atelier, inlassablement, conscient de la responsabilité de l’artiste : « l’œuvre d’art est prophétique, elle influence, alors je ne peux jamais aller dans le négatif ».

WORLD-KNOWN ARTIST, EXHIBITED IN EUROPE, MASTER NSHOLE CONTINUES TO HIGHLIGHT THE HEAT OF AFRICA, TO SEE HIMSELF AS A GUARDIAN OF TRADITIONS: «I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO DETACH MYSELF FROM MY CHILDHOOD, FROM MY ROOTS.» Nshole explains that he has been «very poor»; at eleven, one day, when his mother could not provide food for them at the boarding school, he proposed, with his big brother, without knowledge or experience, without paint or brush, to paint the front of a small grocery store in exchange for cans: a «decoration against food» barter. Drawing classes at school, a series of chances, a lot of generosity and a huge talent led him to be the major artist that we know and who even admits that he can observe a painting for hours in his workshop, «to understand what is the mystery.» This spirituality of the work shows up in the majestic triptych Élévation, but must not make forget a seriousness bordering on obsession. Nshole spends ten hours every day in his studio, tirelessly, aware of the responsibility of the artist «the artwork is prophetic, it influences, so I can never go in the negative. » 44 I HAMAJI
