Connu comme étant le plus vieux désert du monde, avec des dunes de sable atteignant 300 m. de hauteur et couvrant une superficie de 49 768 kilomètres, il semble aride et sec, mais une étonnante collection de créatures du désert survit dans cette région.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO A Flourishing Market ‘If you build it they will come’ is a quote often used as a business strategy, even though it’s a misquote from the film Field of Dreams.

It must also have been on people’s minds when they saw The Malabar Group’s swish new business travel lounge at Luano Airport outside Lubumbashi. There it was, with staff, full services and great coffee. And not a single customer.

‘We had nobody coming in’, Malabar’s MD Ritchie Callaghan remembers ruefully. ‘Not one person in the first three months!’ But then they started to come, slowly. Why? Because Malabar was ahead of the game, and was already in place when the first players arrived.

Now the newly expanded lounge is crowded much of the time, as businessmen, mining executives, and in fact anyone who does business in the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo passes through. And the coffee is still the same and very good.

It’s been the company’s modus operandi: have the vision, get in early, provide top-quality service. Malabar Business Travel, one of the companies in the Malabar Group, grew out of this single bold move at the airport.

‘We believed there was a gap in the market’, Ritchie says, ‘and we started before anyone else saw it.’

There was already Malabar Logistics which in Ritchie’s words was ‘a scramble and a gamble! It was crazy but we went for it.’ A borrowed forklift and a rented warehouse, which had to be cleared of its contents over one long night, and Malabar Logistics was in business in 36 I HAMAJI

2004. Crucially, they had a large client already waiting, Republic House.

They’d been Ritchie’s previous employers, where he’d been Country Representative for DRC before taking the plunge to set up his own company. His record and his relationship with Republic House meant they – in particular Martin Stern - had no hesitation in trusting him with their logistics business. Soon, Malabar Logistics was able to help the DRC and traders by ensuring trades took place within the DRC rather than abroad, ensuring fair play, accurate accounting and all the other elements which help professional businesses flourish.

You can see the pattern. Spot the gap early, commit to it and continue to build up a formidable reputation for professional service and integrity. But while Malabar worked hard, it also worked very smart.

The DRC, the second largest country in Africa, is reckoned to be the richest country on Earth for natural resources, like copper and cobalt. Due to the extensive history of internal troubles, these resources are only now being properly explored. That means that there has been a huge increase in the inflow into the country of mining companies, metal traders and many others. And many of them began their first reconnaissance and exploration trips through Lubumbashi, where they were welcomed by Malabar with an excellent cup of coffee which they could enjoy while all the formalities were taken care of for them.

Relationships were started and so Malabar now has connections with virtually all the major mining and mineral players in the region, relationships which started the moment they set foot in the country. That is invaluable, and only possible because of the vision and foresight of Malabar’s Managing Director.

Ritchie Callaghan is quick though to share the praise with loyal staff, as well as his long-term business partner, Madhu Pillai, who has now moved on to other projects.

He has also clearly welcomed working with loyal local employees, like Emile and before him Kalanguy and many others.

DRC runs deep in Ritchie. His father was MD of Standard Bank in Kinshasa, and Ritchie left for Lubumbashi and started in business marketing tins of Cowbell powdered milk in the markets there. ‘I thoroughly enjoyed it’, he says. ‘I struck up friendships with some of the market traders, and I’m still in contact with some of them. I learnt a lot.’

This connection with locals at every level has served him well, particularly during the periods of unrest when it was very difficult to do business. ‘Our company logo looks like a horse but actually it’s a knight from a chess set. During those difficult periods in the evenings we played chess with a group of like minded people. We would all get together and play chess – I loved it!’

In recent years there’s been rather less time to play chess, and less necessity to, as the country is settling down, opening up for business. And The Malabar Group is, as you’d expect, already positioned in a variety of sectors. There’s Malabar Security and the Malabar Clearing Agency already adding to the logistics and business travel operations. And there’s more to come.

‘It hasn’t been easy’, says Ritchie. ‘The last 10 years have been difficult for everyone. But we’re glad to be here.

We’re expanding our business and also spreading into more parts of the country. And the country is now very much open to business. It’s a sleeping giant in terms of opportunity.

‘The next 20 years in the DRC will be challenging, exciting

and rewarding for those who can position themselves early. We’re working with international organisations and on the ground here so that companies in the DRC have compliance with international standards in the USA and the UK. We’re compliant with insurance requirements for Lloyds of London. We work with the FEC Chamber of Commerce so we play our part in employment, standards and quality here.’

As a sign of that integrity and professionalism, starting right now, The Malabar Group has been appointed the licensee for the introduction and expansion of the FedEx courier operation for the whole of the DRC. That’s a real feather in its cap and a sign of how favourably the group is regarded internationally.

There’s more to come. As Ritchie Callaghan says: ‘2014 is going to be an exciting year, and we have more announcements to make so watch this space. The DRC is an expanding economy and The Malabar Group is right at the heart of it.’

Ce sont près d’un million de fonctionnaires – enseignants, personnel hospitalier, militaires, policiers qui, aujourd’hui, - doivent être « bancarisé ». Un énorme défi proportionnel à la taille du pays. Il s’agit d’une initiative du Gouvernement Congolais pour combattre la corruption.

Dans l’intervalle, de nombreux fonctionnaires fictifs ont été découverts. C’est l’ordinaire du quotidien des banques de découvrir que sur les 2000 fonctionnaires enregistrés sur les listes, seuls 400 se présentent à l’enregistrement. Dans la ville de Feshi, le directeur Roland découvre que vingt et un noms inconnus ont été ajoutés sur la liste des 12 enseignants de l’école par un intermédiaire… Si l’inscription et le paiement des fonctionnaires est un véritable casse-tête dans les grandes villes, alors il est facile d’imaginer la complexité et la difficulté dans les zones les plus reculées, dépourvues d’établissements bancaires. Un certain nombre de banques avaient sous-traité le paiement d’abord auprès des opérateurs de téléphonie mobile dans les régions où ils n’ont pas d’agence. Mais les salaires payés par téléphone mobile au Congo ne s’est pas avéré être pas une réussite comme dans de nombreux autres pays africains. Chaque mois, la ‘Trust Merchant Bank’ déploie ses employés aux différents coins du pays. De mauvaises routes qui n’ont sont pas, où ils s’ensablent à chaque kilomètres. Des trajets à moto qui relèvent de l’exploit héroïques pour accomplir la mission qui leur a été confiée. Sur des radeaux ou en traversant des ponts branlants les agents de la bancarisation défient des rivières pour parvenir à payer les salaires pour couper le relai des intermédiaires. Ces solutions on leur limite car il arrive qu’il y ait encore des enseignants qui doivent se déplacer pour recevoir leur salaire.

IIT’S PRETTY RARE, BUT THE NUMBERS ARE AT TIME DECEIVING. In a country where every last ranking is shovelled, it is worth remembering that the Katanga region is renown for its wealth. One of the biggest province’s in the country but first on an economical and industrial scale. A record related primarily to its vast mineral resources, starting with cobalt that the country possesses about 80 % of global reserves (the largest reserve in the world). Katanga is also the world’s largest producer of copper, 10% of which is found in its reserves (making it the second largest reserves after Chile) and as a result Katanga produces more than 500 000 tonnes of copper per year.

In the year 2000’s, 72% of the land was dedicated to the mining industry and in favour of liberalization of the sector, Katanga has naturally become the most attractive region of Congo for foreign investors. As often pointed out, not without pride, by its governor, Moïse Katumbi Chapwe, the province contributes to 50% of gross domestic product and is the powerhouse of the Congolese economy. According to the Ministry of Mines and despite some limited refining abilities, exports of mineral products account for nearly 70 % of the total value of exports for the Democratic Republic of Congo. The industry should continue to grow, especially if we rely on the dramatic growth of the mobile phone market (where even batteries are composed of cobalt) even India and China, have today become major consumers of copper.

These perspectives cannot overshadow the weaknesses and challenges of the booming economy. Too much dependency is given to foreign companies at the expenses of local employment and many children are handed over precarious and dangerous activities. Lastly, the awarding of certain mining contracts and decentralisation delays seem to also be hampering even distribution of these successes..

Coco is not the first chef in his family. The Reinarhz family history is a culinary love story dedicated to the fine flavours of Africa and the African culinary renaissance can be tasted in every mouthful of Coco’s food. His cuisine is a family tradition.

Chef Coco Reinarhz is at the forefront of the modern African food movement. He is the Chef of the restaurants « Sel et Poivre » and « Le Petit Sel » in Sandton.

The restaurant « Sel and Poivre » received a ‘Diners Club Diamond Award’ for its excellent wine list and is known as one of the 100 best South African restaurants since 2008.

6 45’ 5H 10 ml d’huile d’olive 2 kg de poitrine de porc désossée 1 kg de pommes rouges 500 gr de chou rouge 750 ml de vin blanc 100 ml de vinaigre blanc 1 kg de sucre brun Sel et poivre à votre convenance CHOUCROUTE ROUGE 1. Hachez finement les 500 gr. de chou rouge 2. Ajoutez le vin blanc ainsi que le vinaigre blanc au chou, le tout dans une casserole 3. Faîtes cuire à feu doux jusqu’à ce que le liquide soit absorbé et réservez dans un saladier 4. Pelez les pommes et faîtes les cuire à feu doux dans un sirop (1L d’eau + 1 kg de sucre brun) 5. Utilisez un robot de cuisine pour réduire les pommes en une purée que vous mélangerez avec le chou POITRINE DE PORC RÔTIE 6. Assaisonnez la poitrine de porc 7. Aplatissez la sur une planche à découper, étalez la purée dessus et enroulez le tout dans du film plastique en serrant bien 8. Sur une plaque de cuisson, faîtes cuire le porc à environ 110°C pendant 5 heures en l’arrosant de bouillon toutes les 30 minutes 9. Découpez les bords une fois la poitrine cuite et découpez la en fines tranches 10. Avant de servir, laissez la cuire une dernière fois dans le four pendant 5 minutes à 180°C afin de rendre le dessus croustillant 10ml olive oil 2 kg deboned pork belly 1kg apple 500g red cabbage 750ml white wine 100ml white vinegar 1kg brown sugar Salt and Pepper to taste RED CABBAGE CHOUCROUTE 1. Thinly slice 500 g red cabbage 2. Add white wine and white vinegar to the cabbage in a pot 3. Reduce at a low heat until all the liquid is absorbed and set aside.

4. Peel and core 1kg apples then simmer in a sugar syrup (1l water plus 1kg sugar) 5. Purée the apples in food processor then mix it with cabbage.

8. In a baking tray ½ fill with stock, bake the pork at about 110°c for 5 hours, toping up the stock every 30 min 9. Trim edges once cooked and portion into 250g portions.
