Il a publié le New York Times, Photo Raw, Les Inrocks, Jeune Afrique, le Monde etc. Ses projets le conduisent en RDC où il suit les rebelles du Nord Kivu. Graduated from the Journalism faculty and freelance photographer, Colin Delfosse founds in 2007 the collective Out of Focus. GUY TILLIM Guy Tillim est né à Johannesburg en 1962 et vit à Cape Town. Il commence la photographie en 1986 et travaille comme freelance en Afrique du Sud pour Reuters et l’agence France Presse. Tillim a plusieurs fois été primé. Sa série Avenue Patrice Lumumba fut montrée à la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson à Paris et autour du monde. Tillim was born in Johannesburg in 1962 and lives in Cape Town. Starting photography in 1986, he worked as a freelance photographer in South Africa for Reuters and Press France Agency. Tillim has received many awards for his work. His series Avenue Patrice Lumumba has shown at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris, and all round the word.
JEAN-MARC LEDERMAN Jean Marc est un photographe de mode Français installe au Cap depuis plus de 20 ans. Il a également fait des études d’archi à l’école des Beaux Arts à Paris, mais sa passion pour la photo a pris le dessus. Jean Marc is a French fashion photographer who’s been living in Cape Town for more than 20 years. He’s also been studying architecture in Paris at l’Ecole Des Beaux Arts, but became more passionate about photography, reason why he followed this path.

KRIS PANNEKOUCKE Photographe Belge né à Kinshasa, Kris publie régulièrement dans GEO et National Geographic Magazine. Sillonnant l’Afrique, la RDC entre autres pour son travail sur le Fleuve Congo. Pour hamaji magazine, il signe un reportage sur l’Ethiopie. Belgian photographer born in Kinshasa, Kris regularly publishes in GEO and National Geographic Magazine, travelling accross Africa, in DRC amongst others for his work about the Congo River. For Hamaji Magazine, he realizes a report about Ethiopia.
JEAN-LUC DELSEMME Jean-Luc Delsemme est photographe indépendant, en République Démocratique du Congo depuis bientôt 30 ans. Il réalise des reportages pour le voyage ou le monde animalier. Ce sont près d’un million de fonctionnaires – enseignants, personnel hospitalier, militaires, policiers qui, aujourd’hui, - doivent être « bancarisé ». Un énorme défi proportionnel à la taille du pays. Il s’agit d’une initiative du Gouvernement Congolais pour combattre la corruption. Dans l’intervalle, de nombreux fonctionnaires fictifs ont été découverts. C’est l’ordinaire du quotidien des banques de découvrir que sur les 2000 fonctionnaires enregistrés sur les listes, seuls 400 se présentent à l’enregistrement. Dans la ville de Feshi, le directeur Roland découvre que vingt et un noms inconnus ont été ajoutés sur la liste des 12 enseignants de l’école par un intermédiaire… Si l’inscription et le paiement des fonctionnaires est un véritable casse-tête dans les grandes villes, alors il est facile d’imaginer la complexité et la difficulté dans les zones les plus reculées, dépourvues d’établissements bancaires. Chaque mois, la ‘Trust Merchant Bank’ déploie ses employés aux différents coins du pays. De mauvaises routes qui n’en sont pas, où ils s’ensablent à chaque kilomètre. Des trajets à moto qui relèvent de l’exploit pour accomplir la mission qui leur a été confiée. Sur des radeaux ou en traversant des ponts branlants les agents de la bancarisation défient des rivières pour parvenir à payer les salaires pour couper le relai des intermédiaires. Ces solutions ont leur limite car il arrive qu’il y ait encore des enseignants qui doivent se déplacer pour recevoir leur salaire. Deux jours d’un voyage difficile pour parvenir à rejoindre l’endroit où la paie des salaires s’effectue.

Tillim décrit ce travail comme une errance sur des territoires en friches, qui l’a mené tour à tour en République Démocratique du Congo, au Mozambique, à Madagascar, au Bénin, au Ghana et en Angola. Dans le cadre de la Biennale de Lubumbashi en RDC organisée par l’ASBL PICHA en octobre 2013, Guy Tillim a présenté à la Galerie d’Art Contemporain de l’ASBL Dialogues la série qui montre son parcours des villes au Congo comme Likasi, Lubumbashi et Kinshasa. Dans la plupart des villes africaines, on trouve des rues, des avenues et des squares qui portent le nom de Patrice Lumumba. Il fut un des premiers leader africains élu dans les temps modernes, vainqueur des élections organisées au Congo après l’indépendance accordée par la Belgique en 1960. Le discours qu’il prononça lors de la célébration de l’indépendance à Léopoldville en la présence du roi Belge Baudouin signa irrémédiablement son arrêt de mort. Il mentionnera sans équivoque son opposition aux idées d’un ordre néocolonial qui aurait voulu substituer la domination du colonisateur par un contrôle indirect. Il sera assassiné en janvier 1961. Aujourd’hui son image de visionnaire nationaliste demeure sans pour autant être salie par les accusations d’abus de pouvoir qui sont devenues communes aux

f you build it they will come’ is a quote often used as a business strategy, even though it’s a misquote from the film Field of Dreams. It must also have been on people’s minds when they saw The Malabar Group’s swish new business travel lounge at Luano Airport outside Lubumbashi. There it was, with staff, full services and great coffee. And not a single customer. ‘We had nobody coming in’, Malabar’s MD Ritchie Callaghan remembers ruefully. ‘Not one person in the first three months!’ But then they started to come, slowly. Why? Because Malabar was ahead of the game, and was already in place when the first players arrived. Now the newly expanded lounge is crowded much of the time, as businessmen, mining executives, and in fact anyone who does business in the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo passes through. And the coffee is still the same and very good. It’s been the company’s modus operandi: have the vision, get in early, provide top-quality service. Malabar Business Travel, one of the companies in the Malabar Group, grew out of this single bold move at the airport. ‘We believed there was a gap in the market’, Ritchie says, ‘and we started before anyone else saw it.’ There was already Malabar Logistics which in Ritchie’s words was ‘a scramble and a gamble! It was crazy but we went for it.’ A borrowed forklift and a rented warehouse, which had to be cleared of its contents over one long night, and Malabar Logistics was in business in 52 I HAMAJI
2004. Crucially, they had a large client already waiting, Republic House. They’d been Ritchie’s previous employers, where he’d been Country Representative for DRC before taking the plunge to set up his own company. His record and his relationship with Republic House meant they – in particular Martin Stern - had no hesitation in trusting him with their logistics business. Soon, Malabar Logistics was able to help the DRC and traders by ensuring trades took place within the DRC rather than abroad, ensuring fair play, accurate accounting and all the other elements which help professional businesses flourish. You can see the pattern. Spot the gap early, commit to it and continue to build up a formidable reputation for professional service and integrity. But while Malabar worked hard, it also worked very smart. The DRC, the second largest country in Africa, is reckoned to be the richest country on Earth for natural resources, like copper and cobalt. Due to the extensive history of internal troubles, these resources are only now being properly explored. That means that there has been a huge increase in the inflow into the country of mining companies, metal traders and many others. And many of them began their first reconnaissance and exploration trips through Lubumbashi, where they were welcomed by Malabar with an excellent cup of coffee which they could enjoy while all the formalities were taken care of for them. Relationships were started and so Malabar now has connections with virtually all the major mining and mineral players in the region, relationships which started the moment they set foot in the country. That is invaluable, and only possible because of the vision and foresight of Malabar’s Managing Director.
Ritchie Callaghan is quick though to share the praise with loyal staff, as well as his long-term business partner, Madhu Pillai, who has now moved on to other projects. He has also clearly welcomed working with loyal local employees, like Emile and before him Kalanguy and many others. DRC runs deep in Ritchie. His father was MD of Standard Bank in Kinshasa, and Ritchie left for Lubumbashi and started in business marketing tins of Cowbell powdered milk in the markets there. ‘I thoroughly enjoyed it’, he says. ‘I struck up friendships with some of the market traders, and I’m still in contact with some of them. I learnt a lot.’ This connection with locals at every level has served him well, particularly during the periods of unrest when it was very difficult to do business. ‘Our company logo looks like a horse but actually it’s a knight from a chess set. During those difficult periods in the evenings we played chess with a group of like minded people. We would all get together and play chess – I loved it!’ In recent years there’s been rather less time to play chess, and less necessity to, as the country is settling down, opening up for business. And The Malabar Group is, as you’d expect, already positioned in a variety of sectors. There’s Malabar Security and the Malabar Clearing Agency already adding to the logistics and business travel operations. And there’s more to come. ‘It hasn’t been easy’, says Ritchie. ‘The last 10 years have been difficult for everyone. But we’re glad to be here. We’re expanding our business and also spreading into more parts of the country. And the country is now very much open to business. It’s a sleeping giant in terms of opportunity. ‘The next 20 years in the DRC will be challenging, exciting
and rewarding for those who can position themselves early. We’re working with international organisations and on the ground here so that companies in the DRC have compliance with international standards in the USA and the UK. We’re compliant with insurance requirements for Lloyds of London. We work with the FEC Chamber of Commerce so we play our part in employment, standards and quality here.’ As a sign of that integrity and professionalism, starting right now, The Malabar Group has been appointed the licensee for the introduction and expansion of the FedEx courier operation for the whole of the DRC. That’s a real feather in its cap and a sign of how favourably the group is regarded internationally. There’s more to come. As Ritchie Callaghan says: ‘2014 is going to be an exciting year, and we have more announcements to make so watch this space. The DRC is an expanding economy and The Malabar Group is right at the heart of it.’

PANNA COTTA 1. Faire chauffer ensemble dans une casserole la crème, le sucre et la vanille 2. Faire tremper la gélatine dans de l’eau glacée pendant 2 minutes 3. Retirer l’excès d’eau et incorporer la gélatine à la crème encore chaude 4. Remplir les moules du mélange et mettre au frais jusqu’à ce que la crème durcisse. Servir avec une compote aux mûres TARTE TATIN 1. Peler et couper les pommes en quartiers. Mettre le tout dans un bol et mélanger avec le jus de citron 2. Dans une poêle, mélanger le sucre et 2 cuillères à soupe d’eau sur un feu doux tout en mélangeant pour dissoudre le sucre. Faire ensuite chauffer à feu moyen et laisser cuire pendant 5 minutes jusqu’à ce que le sucre se caramélise et devienne brun. 3. Ajouter les pommes coupées en petits morceaux et arrosées de beurre. Tout en continuant à faire cuire à feu très doux, laisser cuire encore 5-6 minutes afin que les pommes soient à moitié cuites. 4. Retirer du feu et réserver sur le côté pour que le mélange refroidisse.
PANNA COTTA 1. Bring cream, sugar and vanilla pod to just under boiling point. 2. Soak gelatine in ice cold water for 2 minutes. 3. Squeeze out excess water and add to the hot cream. 4. Fill the dariole moulds then refrigerate until its set. Serve with a berry compote

TARTE TATIN 1. Peel and core the apples and cut into quarters. Place in a large bowl and toss in the lemon juice 2. Place sugar and 2 tablespoons water in an oven-proof frying pan or 20cm tarte Tatin pan over low heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Increase heat to medium and cook for about 5 minutes until the sugar caramelizes and is a light-golden brown. 3. Add the apple, cut-side up and dot with the butter. Keeping the heat very low, cook for a further 5-6 minutes to partially cook the apple. 4. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. 5. Preheat the oven to 180°C.

Retirer du four et laisser la préparation dans le moule pendant 10 minutes avant de la retourner avec précaution dans une grande assiette. Servir avec de la crème ou de la crème glacée CRÈME BRULÉE 1. Faire chauffer la crème et la vanille et éteindre le feu juste avant que le mélange ne se mette à bouillir 2. Fouetter les jaunes d’oeufs et la crème jusqu’à ce que la préparation blanchisse 3. Filtrer la préparation 4. Remplir les ramequins, faire cuire au bainmarie puis les placer dans un four préchauffé à 160°C pendant 40 minutes 5. Réserver au frais 6. Saupoudrer de la cassonade et caraméliser avec un chalumeau à gaz

Serve with cream or ice-cream. CRÈME BRULÉE 1. Heat cream and vanilla till it reaches just below boiling point 2. Whisk the egg yolk and sugar till pale white 3. Temper the egg with the cream, then strain the mixture 4. Fill the ramekin and place in a “bain-Marie” and bake in a pre-heated oven @ 160°c for about 45 minutes until it sets. 5. Keep in the fridge until cold. 6. Sprinkle castor sugar on top and burn ( Brulé in French) with a gas torch
