Planning for a project to improve the uppermost portion of a walkway along the north rim of Cascadilla Gorge will begin this summer, with construction likely to end in 2015, according to City of Ithaca Transportation Engineer Tim Logue. Discussions over the safety of the walkway — which extends along the top of the gorge between Stewart Avenue and Linn Street’s intersection with University Avenue downtown — began when Alan Young-Bryant M.A. ’07 Ph.D. ’11 died after accidentally falling from the pathway into the gorge in December 2012, according to Logue. “There was quite a bit of discussion after the gentleman fell,” Logue said. “It certainly brought the attention to the condition of the walkway, all the way from the top down to the bottom.” The project — allotted $51,000 for engineering, construction and inspection by the See GORGE page 4

In the light of last week’s Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action case — in which the Supreme Court decided a state law that prohibits affirmative action at state universities does not violate the Constitution — Cornell students said they believe affirmative action is
necessary for colleges across the country. On April 22, the Court upheld a Michigan constitutional amendment that bans affirmative action in admissions to the state’s public universities in a 6-to-2 ruling, according to The New York Times. The justice’s decision said that Michigan’s law is protected by the Equal Protection Clause under the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

According to Shuangyi Hou ’15, president and creative director of the Every1 Campaign, the idea to use a photo series to spread consent awareness began with group founder Leah Salgado ’12 in
Student Assembly President Ulysses Smith ’14 said he believes the ruling was an instance of when “the Court got it wrong.” “In a few years, hopefully it will look back and correct this decision if Congress does not act first. This is yet another blow to the many efforts that have been made to See AFFIRMATIVE ACTION page 4

spring 2012. “I think the problem was that we saw a lot of these efforts being targeted only at particular communities,” Hou said. “We felt like a lot of it ... wasn’t really reaching a wider audience, so [Salgado] had the idea to do these photo campaigns that pull people from a wide variety of communities and backgrounds across Cornell and then put them on Facebook.” Salgado said the campaign has matured over See CAMPAIGN page 4
