In commemoration of May Day, over 50 students held a demonstration on Central Campus, which culminated in the occupation of the intersection of East Avenue and Tower Road Thursday afternoon. President David Skorton said he is still deciding on the future of free bus passes for first-year students just days after the University Assembly called upon Cornell to increase its subsidies to Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit. The U.A. voted April 22 in favor of increasing the University’s subsidies to TCAT, in light of a $700,000 annual budget deficit facing Transportation Services. Approximately $500,000 of that deficit is
caused by an increase in TCAT’s freshmen ridership. The Assembly previously considered passing a resolution cutting the free bus passes after a U.A. committee determined that was the best solution to solving the deficit problem. After deliberating, however, the U.A. voted to ask Cornell to increase its subsidies. After the resolution’s passing, President Skorton has 30 days to respond to it. After a two-day voting period, Annie O’Toole grad will serve as the University’s first professional and female Graduate Student Trustee, the Office of the Assemblies announced Thursday. There were no challenges to the twocandidate election, according to Assemblies Coordinator Amy
O’Donnell. O’Toole — who will begin her two-year term starting the 20142015 academic year — received 1510 votes, while her opponent, Ann BybeeFinley grad, received 1099 votes. Suspect in Monday Shooting Arrested An Ithaca man has been arrested as the suspect of a shooting that took place in downtown Ithaca Monday evening. Clifton McBean, 22, turned himself in to the Ithaca Police De partment Thursday afternoon at approximately 2:15 p.m, according to police. He was charged with criminal possession of a
weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and reckless endangerment in the first degree. The shooting oc curred near the intersection of South Plain Street and Cleveland Avenue at approximately 7:39 p.m. Monday, where McBean reportedly fired gunshots and
injured a man who sustained two gunshots. The victim was transported by civilian vehicle to a nearby hospital. According to police, the shooter and the victim knew each other. McBean is currently in IPD custody and awaiting arraignment in Ithaca City Court. — Compiled by Annie Bui
