Lease Renewed,But Fate Unsure for Ithaca Gardens By ANUSHKA MEHROTRA Sun Staff Writer

For 16 months, the Ithaca Community Gardens had no idea where they would find themselves at the end of 2013, when their lease expires. The gardeners now know they will retain their space at Carpenter Business Park — adjacent to Route 13 — following a vote Wednesday by the Ithaca Common Council. However, the council can vote to terminate the lease with Project Growing Hope, the non-profit that runs the Ithaca Community Gardens, anytime between 2014 and 2033. Council members said that they plan “The gardens should to terminate the lease early to commercially develop the land and generate addiremain until there tional revenue for the city. However, with are bulldozers.” the ordinance to extend Project Growing Hope’s lease passing, members agreed that Alderperson Jennifer Dotson the gardens would remain in the park until development plans are finalized. “The gardens should remain until there are bulldozers and renewing the lease right now allows for that,” Alderperson Jennifer Dotson (G-1st Ward) said. Alderperson J.R. Clairborne (D-2nd Ward) echoed Dotson’s sentiments, arguing that the gardens should not be forcibly relocated until commercial development of the site actually occurs. “The community gardens should not be made to leave until everything is in place at the very last moment,” he said. “What would we do if we gave the developer the okay to start a project and [the land] lays dormant for five or ten years?” Cynthia Yahn, a corporate representative of Building Links Inc, the company that plans on developing the land, emphasized the park has immense commercial potential. N.Y.to Expand Casinos in Effort to Bolster Economy By HELEN DONNELLY Sun Staff Writer

New York State voters approved a constitutional amendment Tuesday that will allow the state to have up to seven more casinos. The amendment, which is intended to revitalize the economy and create employ-

ment in upstate New York, passed 57 to 43 percent, with a majority of precincts in the state voting on the bill. Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) lauded the amendment, saying the expansion of casinos will create revenue for the state, open up job opportunities and bring tourists into New York, according to the New York Times.

Tioga Downs, a racetrack less than an hour away from Ithaca, will be applying for a license in the Southern Tier region. According to a Tioga Downs press release, the racetrack also plans to build a 136-room hotel and to expand its gaming floor. Not all were happy about the amendment. Alderperson Ellen McCollister ’78 (D-3rd Ward) said casinos do not benefit

the economy. “The alleged economic benefits of casino gambling –– job creation and extra tax money for schools –– are not borne out for most communities. Most gamblers are lured in by the slot machines and never venture out to patronize local stores, restaurants and See CASINO page 4
