Servant Leader Awards Cornerstone students Stephen Winkelman and Ashley DeWitt received the Student Leader Award during the Sept. 9 convocation service on campus. The award honors students “entering their senior year who have demonstrated servant leadership on campus and/or in the Grand Rapids community,” said Larry Rice, director of community life. Both Winkelman and DeWitt will receive a $1,000 scholarship and $250 to donate to the charity of their choice. The award was founded when William Reichardt, its creator, wanted to recognize students who engage in “behind-the-scenes” volunteer work, Rice said. Students are

Dr. Joe Stowell Publishes New Book Jesus Nation

Legacy Awards Dinner - October 27 Every fall Cornerstone hosts the Legacy Dinner (undergraduate) and Legacy Luncheon (graduate) for scholarship recipients and donors. It is a special event bringing donors and students together. It is important for recipients to know that the scholarship funds they receive are a gift from people who want to impact their lives.

What does a Christian nation look like? In Dr. Joe Stowell’s newest book Jesus Nation, he explains some of his ideas. “[It is about] facing the bewilderment of thinking that there has to be something more to life than what I am experiencing,” said Stowell, president of Cornerstone University. “The realization that I belong to an emerging nation of eternal proportions that dwarfs any earth bound identity, and I am learning to become an active participant in the greatest nation ever.” He spent three years writing the 200-page book that was inspired by his realization that he desired to belong to Jesus’s nation, and living like the rest of the world means going nowhere fast. “I have a deep desire to help Jesus followers realize that we are a part of his Kingdom and that as such we belong to a different nation that has a culture of its own with different attitudes, perspectives and values,” said Stowell who has authored more than 20 books.

“For too many Christians, our identity is shaped by the country we live in, the color of our skin, our economic standing and our professions,” he said. “Jesus lifts us above all of that and gives us a new identity and a wonderful new way to live that reflects Jesus and his Kingdom. And while some of the Kingdom’s ways are rather radical, they are always the best way to live.”
