New campaign fights threat to Devonport-based assault ships A high level Plymouth task group has met to spearhead a campaign to stop threatened cuts to two Devonport-based amphibious assault ships. The Devonport Task Group has reconvened to protect HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark from threat of being decommissioned by the Government. There are rumours that the ships could go under a Government review of national security capabilities as part of the implementation of the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review. The group, which comprises the council’s leader and shadow leader, city MPs and senior representatives
of key city organisations, agreed to set up an urgent meeting with the Defence Secretary to press the case for why the two Devonport base amphibious ships are essential to the UK’s defence. It will also lead a public campaign to lobby for maintaining the ships, which are key to Plymouth being at the Royal Navy’s centre of amphibious capability as they are co-located with the Royal Marines in the city. Councillor Ian Bowyer, leader of the Council and chair of the Task Group, said: “This issue is of huge importance to the UK’s defence capability as well as to the future of Devonport, so it is vital that we work together as a city to fend off this threat. “HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark play a key role in the
Royal Navy’s capability, enabling it to deliver the punch of the Royal Marines ashore by air and by sea, as well as humanitarian aid when needed. “As well as lobbying Westminster we will be campaigning locally to encourage people to help make the case to Whitehall. Plymouth has a strong track record of working together to help protect our armed forces and we’ll be fighting hard to prevent these ships from being scrapped.” Councillor Tudor Evans, shadow leader of the council, said: “While the Government says potential cuts to HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark is speculation, we need to treat this seriously. Senior defence figures are also very concerned by this and we must act now and we must act together.”

centre. Plymouth is on the up.” In the last two years British Land also acquired a slice of the city centre in New George Street and Royal Parade and is currently in further talks with the Council about how to make public spaces in and around the development sympathetic and complementary to the rest of the city centre. The developers and their contractors have been working closely with the Council to draw up detailed project schemes to ensure public and traders suffer as little inconvenience as possible during the 20 month construction programme.
The £53 million scheme looks set to transform this key gateway entrance to Plymouth City Centre, creating hundreds of jobs as well as a new destination for both locals and visitors alike. The scheme, which is across the road from the British Land-owned Drake Circus, is being built on the site of the former coach station. The city coach services have already been moved to a purpose-built facility in Mayflower Street which opened last year. The new leisure development will comprise a 12 screen Cineworld Imax cinema, 15 restaurant units and 420 car park spaces. David Pollock, development director for British Land, said: “We are delighted that the transformation of this pivotal part of the city centre can now begin. Plymouth City Council has been a proactive partner and we look forward to continuing to work with them on the development’s delivery. “Having exchanged contracts with Cineworld, we are in advanced discussions with a number of exciting restaurant operators, many of which currently have no presence in Plymouth.” Leader of Plymouth City Council, Councillor Ian Bowyer, said: “This is a huge moment for Plymouth. While other cities have seen developments fall by the wayside, Plymouth has attracted one of the country’s most important and consistent commercial developers. “Not only have they invested in Drake

Circus, but they are cementing their faith in our potential as a city with this project. We are a city that is open to business, open to companies and opportunities that create hundreds of jobs for the people of Plymouth. “A lot of work has gone into getting to this point and this is a moment to be celebrated. This is a great day!” Maclaren Construction has been appointed as the main contractor and enabling works are already underway. The scheme is set to open in autumn 2019. The new cinema will incorporate state of the art audio and visual technology, and will have 12 screens ranging in size from 80 seats to a giant 450 seat IMAX auditoria. The scheme will create 350 permanent jobs, a large number of temporary

people putting their views forward.
Cllr Martin Leaves, Peverell Ward, said: “Having worked with previous skatepark designs in the city, I am pleased to work alongside many skateboarders in the city at the recent consultation launch, to discuss these new skatepark designs.
Plans include an extension to the existing site with a snake run, popular with skaters and BMX riders. There will also be a training bowl for those less confident riders and skaters and additional seating for spectators.
“They look fantastic and it will be great to see the next generation of skaters and BMXers using the facility. I was overwhelmed with the response at the consultation event with so many young

A new area for Parkour known as free running, similar to an obstacle course, is also included in the concept designs. Once design is finalised, work is expected to start in the new year. construction jobs and will be a huge boost to the city’s night-time offer as well as drawing people in during the day. The final piece of the legal jigsaw fell into place when the conditional offer was formally made unconditional, signalling the end of two years of complex negotiations with the company. Steve Hughes, chief executive of Plymouth City Centre said: “This is a huge vote of confidence in the city and will give us a new contemporary attraction which will help attract more customers and visitors to our rapidly improving city
A host of key projects designed to showcase the city in 2020 are already being developed. Work has started to build ‘The Box’ – the £37 million attraction, gallery and museum complex which will become the city’s cultural centre. Plymouth’s City Market has enjoyed a rejuvenation thanks to a multi-million makeover, demolition has been completed on three buildings which overlook Colin Campbell Court – ahead of its long-term redevelopment, a new coach station has been built in Mayflower Street, Mayflower historic trails are being planned and other public realm improvements are also being planned. Overall investment in Plymouth in preparing for Mayflower is in the region of £175 million.
Council targets litter louts in move to clean up city
Plymouth City Council is stepping up the fight to keep the city clean.
From January 2018, additional enforcement officers will be patrolling the streets of Plymouth, with the aim of preventing littering, dog fouling, flyposting and fly-tipping offences. This work will be delivered by either an external partner or the council’s in-house team, and a value-for-money procurement exercise for the contract will be carried out shortly. The move comes as the council seeks to deliver on the Corporate Plan, which sets out a clear aim to ensure that Plymouth is a green and pleasant city. Councillor Dave Downie, Cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities said: “I am proud to live in this beautiful city and so keeping it clean is one of our key priorities.
“Sadly, a small minority of the population do not share this view and so we are keen to make very clear that blighting this city is not acceptable. “Having extra staff on the street will force offenders to think about their behaviours and how they affect their neighbours which will hopefully lead to a cleaner city for us all to enjoy.” Although there are currently council staff trained in the gathering and reporting of evidence, numbers are small and so proactive presence on the street is limited. This move will provide extra enforcement officers, ensuring that instead of being a reactive service, teams will be able to proactively tackle issues around the city. It is expected that enforcement officers will be treading pavements early in the new year.
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” 2 Corinthians 4:16

Few landscapes in the British Isles are as iconic as the islands that lie off the north-western Scottish coast. Over a period of six years, Madeleine Bunting returned again and again to the Hebrides, exploring their landscapes, histories and magnetic pull. With great sensitivity and perceptiveness, ‘Love of Country’ delves into the meanings of home and belonging, which in these islands have been fraught with tragedy as well as tenacious resistance. Bunting uses her stories of journeys to the Hebrides to explore Britain’s influence in the past and its place in the world today: “These histories have formed the dense weave of attachments across the British archipelago from which we now search for new definitions of nation to express and inspire human solidarity. South West singers are invited to sing at New York’s Carnegie Hall
Director of music Marcus Alleyne and the South West Philharmonia Chorus have been invited to participate in the American premiere performance of composer Patrick Hawes ‘The Great War Symphony’ at the Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) Concert Series at the Carnegie Hall in New York next year. The work has been specially written to mark the ending of the First World War and was performed on Armistice Day in November at the Royal Albert Hall. The UK premier took place exactly 100 years after the Great War ended. Dr Jonathan Griffith, artistic director and pincipal conductor for DCINY said: “The South West Philharmonia Chorus received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers as well as the exceptional personal recommendation given by Patrick Hawes.
Marcus Alleyne as a platform to support local and national charities and to offer a unique way of music making in the South West.
Marcus (left) manages a busy schedule with five other choirs, theatre companies and orchestras throughout the working week delivering over 50 public performances each year. The choir and orchestra have over 130 registered members and continues to grow under the successful management and direction of Marcus. Following several sell-out concerts the group are staging their Christmas Concert ‘Christmas in the City’ with guest soloist world-class harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry. The concert is at the Plymouth Guildhall on December 16 at 7.30pm. Tickets can be obtained from www.swpac. co.uk. The Community Centre will continue to stay open until 6pm when the singing will move to the Stoke Inn for lots of rousing song, Christmas carols, old favourites and general raucous good fun! The Community Centre has been in existence since 1981 when Pat and John Kinsman took their passion for youth and community work one step further by moving the building from a primary school and re siting it where it stands today. Almost 40 years later, Pat and John are still the main driving force behind the success of the Community Centre and its positive contribution to so many Stoke residents over the years. They have organised huge fairs and parades in previous years that would have brought Stoke Village to a standstill, and brought out local people in their hundreds. If anyone has any old photographs or stories they would like to share, please get in touch with karen@ cornerstonevision.com

Plymouth Samaritans have applied to the Aviva Community Fund for £1000 to train volunteers Sambassadors – to link with local businesses and sporting organizations to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. The Sambassadors initiative is part of a scheme developed by the branch to reach out to local organisations to: • Act as ambassadors for Samaritans in the corporate and sporting community • Speak out against the stigma associated with mental distress • Help identify potential listening volunteers to provide a compassionate ear for people in emotional distress • Help build resources and opportunities to enable the service to continue and grow Plymouth Samaritans director, Janet Sherriff, said “Mental distress should not be a cause for stigma and shame. We want to work more closely with business leaders and sportspeople to get our message heard. The Aviva Fund provides us with a valuable opportunity to get this scheme off the ground. We urge the people of Plymouth to vote for us.” The Samaritans provide a trained, round the clock listening service to people who are in emotional distress. The Plymouth branch is entirely staffed by local volunteers who do all their fundraising themselves. Samaritans can be contacted at any time during the day or night by calling the freephone number 116 123.

Le Bavet Bete return with their version of ‘A Christmas Carol’
Plymouth’s favourite funny foursome return with a family friendly version of A Christmas Carol.
After the sell-out successes of The Jungle Book, Robin Hood & His Merry Men, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Barbican Theatre and Le Navet Bete are excited to present their latest co-produced Christmas show, a joyful, comic re-telling of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol from December 14 to January 7. This will be their biggest and most spectacular co-production with the funny foursome to date. The inimitable Le Navet Bete are back for their seventh Christmas in Plymouth with their hilarious and unique version of the greatest Christmas ghost story ever told, coproduced with Barbican Theatre. A festive physical comedy treat for the whole family featuring all the much loved Dickensian characters plus a few extra for good measure – it is Christmas after all! A Christmas Carol will be performed at Plymouth’s much loved and larger Plymouth Athenaeum. This follows the hugely successful 10 performance run of Le Navet Bete’s Dracula: The Bloody Truth at the theatre earlier this year; the first theatrical performance on its stage since it was mothballed in 2009. A further reason for moving the Christmas show to The Plymouth
Athenaeum was due to last year’s The Jungle Book selling out so quickly, with extensive waiting lists and many left disappointed. The Plymouth Athenaeum has a larger 332 capacity, which is more than double that of the Barbican Theatre, so we hope that everyone who wants to see the show this year can! Sheila Snellgrove, Barbican Theatre’s chief executive said: “Le Navet Bete and Barbican Theatre’s Christmas productions have become an institution for theatre audiences in Plymouth as evidenced by the increase in audience numbers year on year. Following our very successful run of Dracula at The Plymouth Athenaeum this April and sell out Christmas shows over the past few years, we are excited about reaching even more new audiences with our Christmas production at this

not to use the bus is that they don’t carry cash or are afraid they do not have the correct change. From now on passengers won’t need to carry cash to board our buses. Contactless also makes boarding faster, so we hope to see a direct improvement in boarding times.”
Buses are accepting contactless payment methods including bPay, Apple Pay, Android Pay, Visa and MasterCard. Customers can simply ask the driver for a ticket or multiple tickets and instead of paying with cash, use a method of contactless payment.
Plymouth Citybus is the only operator in Plymouth and the first in Devon to offer contactless as an on bus payment method. The payment method has been introduced after an extensive trial period on new ticket machines, which were installed across the Citybus fleet in October.
Contactless card payment is just one of the recent improvements to the service offered by Plymouth Citybus who in October 2017 was named ‘Medium Bus Operator of the Year’ at the routeone Awards and was highly commended as ‘Bus Operator of the Year’ at the National Transport Awards.
Leader of the Plymouth Council, Ian Bowyer, and Plymouth Citybus managing director, Richard Stevens, formally launched contactless on board one of the new Citybus fleet in November.

Church celebrates 175th anniversary In 2018 a Plymouth church celebrates a remarkable story of survival as it marks its 175th anniversary.
Revd Tim Buckley, Vicar of St Michael’s said: “Many of the people who grew up at St Michael’s or married there have moved away. We need the help of local media to help find them.
Built as the poor man’s church in 1843, St Michael’s in Albert Road was destroyed by bombing in 1941. Rebuilt and re-opened in 1953 after the war, the second St Michael’s became unusable because of the poor quality of the building work.
“We want to invite them back to share their memories, tell us where they are now, and help us plan for the next 175 years.”
The third St Michael’s opened in 2009 and next year the church is holding a number of events to mark its anniversary.
St Michael’s can be contacted through its church website stbarnacles.wordpress.com (or Google St Barnacles) or at the Facebook page of St Michael’s & St Barnabas, Devonport.
Park for £1 and go Christmas shopping in the city centre Late night shoppers can park for just £1 from 3pm at Plymouth’s Western Approach car park in the run-up to Christmas. The City Council is providing discounted parking every Thursday night to get folk into the festive spirit and encourage them to see what the city centre’s West End shops have on offer. The deal began in November to coincide with the city’s Christmas lights switch-on and the start of festive activities in the city centre. With the special rate applying from 3pm families can head into the city centre straight from school to stock up on those Christmas goodies and join in the fun and entertainment. Councillor Steve Ricketts, Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing Delivery, said: “Thursdays are a big night for retailers in the run-up to Christmas and we hope this great offer will encourage shoppers into some of our smaller, independent shops.” Steve Hughes, chief executive of the Plymouth City Centre Company, said: “This is great news for Christmas shoppers and our traders, especially those in the West End where we have so many great independent stores offering something different. “We also hope shoppers will come and have a look at the newly refurbished market which is earning a growing reputation as a place to meet, eat and drink and browse the many new and traditional stalls.” Plymouth is being turned into a Winter Wonderland this Christmas, with log cabin style stalls, real snow, reindeer, fabulous lights and decorations and even a Santa-driven train. Shoppers and visitors can grab a mulled wine at the Christmas Market, wander the streets of the Barbican with Ebenezer Scrooge or hunt around the city centre and waterfront with two festive family trails. See www.visitplymouth.co.uk for more details.

Navy figureheads moved for their new lease of life Two spectacular figureheads which formerly adorned the bows of naval warships are on their way towards starting a new lease of life in Plymouth’s exciting new cultural and heritage attraction, The Box. The famous ‘King Billy’ and ‘Topaze‘ sculptures have been selected from the Heritage Centre’s figurehead gallery for a special pilot project. They will now undergo some vital analysis work before being restored. The results of the analysis will also help inform how 12 additional figureheads are restored so they can also be displayed in the main entrance of The Box when it opens in 2020. Warrant Officer Mark Portman said: “The figureheads are a popular highlight with visitors to the Heritage Centre, but their colourful exteriors are not original and the
paintwork hides possible internal decay, a multitude of repairs and layers of paintwork. “In order to restore them to their original condition we need to use scientific techniques such as X-ray and sonic investigation methods. These will identity what fillers, fibreglass and paint have been used over generations of care and repair. Backed up by research this will enable us to ensure we use the best and most appropriate restoration and conservation methods to preserve them for the years to come.’’ Councillor Glenn Jordan, Plymouth City Council cabinet member for culture said: “The figureheads are more than just wooden sculptures; they’re iconic symbols of the history of the city and the Royal Navy. They’re also fantastic representations of the craftsmanship and skill of the sculptors who made them.
On the move...The King Billy figurehead is dismantled in readiness for its removal
“Right from the start when we were developing our
The King Billy figurehead...wrapped and ready for the move
original concepts for The Box we wanted to have a ‘flotilla’ of figureheads suspended from the ceiling of the new entrance. Now ‘King Billy’ and ‘Topaze’ have been moved so this important analysis work can take place – it’s a huge step towards realising this ambition - and a wonderful opportunity for us to work in partnership with the Naval Heritage Centre.” ‘Topaze’ was made for HMS Topaze, an 1850s wooden 51-gun warship, who’s crew in 1868 removed two statues from Easter Island, which now reside in the collections of the British Museum. ‘King Billy’ is a standing figure of William IV and was originally the figurehead on the 120gun warship HMS Royal William, which served for many years as guard ship at Devonport. A glass fibre replica of ‘King Billy’ stands inside the Devonport Dockyard wall at Mutton Cove, on the banks for the River Tamar – still keeping eye on Naval traffic.
said: “We’re extremely proud of our naval heritage collection and welcome the professional investigation and restoration of the figureheads that will now take place. Although we’re sad to see ‘Topaze’ and ‘King Billy’ go we are still open as usual with a number of fascinating objects and exhibitions on display. We‘re looking forward to seeing the figureheads on display in The Box and excited about the wider public access and greater awareness of Plymouth’s naval heritage this will bring.’’
The Devonport Naval Heritage Centre is managed by the Royal Navy. A new curator has recently been appointed by the National Museum Royal Navy to oversee the Devonport collection together with a large team of dedicated volunteers. Volunteer John Williams, guide and exhibition organiser

Turning the spotlight on child neglect in Plymouth People in Plymouth are being encouraged to spot the signs of child neglect at the earliest opportunity so families can get the help they need quickly. Neglect is the ongoing failure to meet a child’s basic physical and/or psychological needs, and the most common form of child abuse across the UK. We know that some parents could be struggling and want to ask for help or advice, but don’t know where to turn. It is important all the children who need help and support get it as quickly as possible before problems get worse and they are harmed; however research shows that many people do not act on their concerns because they worry about being wrong. The Neglect Matters campaign aims to help people recognise the signs of child neglect and have the confidence to share any concerns, no matter how small, to the localised NSPCC Helpline number of 0808 800 5000. The Helpline team are available 24/7 via phone and online for free and people can contact us anonymously if they wish. The Helpline now has access to a wealth of local information, allowing a greater level of Plymouth-focused signposting than ever before. Everyone in Plymouth has a role to play in protecting children and young people from neglect. It may be nothing, but it could be something: every child deserves to be protected.

Youngsters from the Business club took over Column Bake House’s stall at last years Christmas Market. Right: Students attending a Power to Change workshop at the Real Ideas Organisation
DANDELION POP IS PUTTING YOUNGSTERS ON MAP ‘I’d love to start a business!’ ‘It’s given me confidence!’ ‘We are tomorrows business leaders!’ These were quotes straight from the mouths of children who are part of a business club at a local primary school in Plymouth. For several years College Road Primary School in Plymouth has been running a student-led business club. The headteacher, Jim Wallace, is very forward thinking and makes sure that the children are in the driving seat. They have to come up with the ideas, content, marketing, and the plan. They learn about decision-making as a team and finances. The teachers, Real Ideas Organisation (RIO) and local businesses are supporting them. Over the last few months they have been preparing the creation of a community interest company called Dandelion Pop. With the help of local
business owners and RIO, they created a new concept and a new logo.
and plan these events in partnership with College Road Primary School.
Dandelion Pop will solve local issues, create jobs, teach students about entrepreneurship, and provide opportunities and vision for the community. The idea is to establish a series of fun and vibrant events that have a fixed format. They always include something for people to learn, a place for children to play and local, high quality food.
Funds can be pledged at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/dandelionpop
They have already secured some funding through National Lottery, Awards for All to set up Dandelion Pop as a CIC and get them started, but they are calling on the Crowd (for the first time) to help raise £2000.
Investigating the idea of ‘home’ this fun workshop is perfect for parents as well as children and is sure to get everyone telling stories, moving and exploring what it means to be a good neighbour in Plymouth today.
The funds will be used to set up and run five events throughout 2018, pay for marketing expertise through our partners to advertise these events to the local community, allow us to produce marketing material, such as leaflets, banners and flags, and employ a member of the community to help organise
£5 will get you two hours of fun and something delicious to eat! (per person) Call 01752 567660 or e-mail smuldoon@collegeroad.plymouth.sch.uk
The first event will happen on December 9 at College Road Primary School. Beyond Face has created a session called ‘A Good Neighbour’ for the first Dandelion Pop event to explore neighbourly relationships through storytelling, drama and movement.

Michelle Quintrell, spokesperson from the project, said, “The support for our much loved park to date has been truly heart-warming. the quality of work is first class. As well as selling to the public, Cycle Recycle are always happy to receive old bikes from the public, as what cannot be fixed can always be broken down into spares. They also have a good collection of spare parts available to buy at great prices.
“We now have to find funds for about three tonnes of top soil and compost to fill the substantial planters so we can plant in them as soon as possible. Anyone - or business able to help with this appeal is kindly asked to contact Michelle direct on 07718935690 This is just the beginning of improvements to our local park. To raise
funds for more we will be holding various events throughout the year. The Victoria Park Community Group will host its annual Christmas event on December 8 from 2pm-6pm at the Park Pavillion Café where there will be a live nativity, torchlight carols and a warm welcome. A ‘reverse’ Father Christmas will be accepting gifts instead of handing them out - pet food for the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust and the human variety for Plymouth Food Bank. Children are being asked to decorate gold, frankinscence, and myrrh themed gifts, with a prize for the best one. And there will be a special prize for the best decorated mobility scooter, wheelchair, zimmer frame crutches or walking stick. Donations will be gratefully received, either for Woodside, Plymouth Food Bank, or to be sold to raise funds for the park; or members of the public can pay £5 to sell from their own gazebo or stall.

Crackerjack, it’s a collectors delight A recent addition to Stoke’s Albert Road Collection of Shops is Steve’s Collectables. Easily found just a little way up the hill from RC Everything and a little way down from the Dockyard Records store it’s in an area that is slowly becoming a place for enthusiasts of all kinds to shop. Steve Lamerton opened the shop less than six months ago but he says he is pleased that it is beginning to establish itself quite nicely, in fact he’s already looking around to find a second shop. Like his father before him, Steve had a job in the Dockyard but fancied a shop full of collectables. “Dad had an antiques shop in Millbridge so it was a natural move for me to look at a collectables shop” said Steve. An avid collector himself, Steve knows collectors around the city so word of mouth is attracting the more serious customer to the door although there are plenty of inexpensive pocket money treats for children of all ages. What are collectables and who buys them? Steve has a good selection of the most popular ranges, in the main collected by
men. There are Dinky Toys, Matchbox miniatures, Corgi models and of course Hornby Railways. Slightly more contemporary a great selection of Star Wars items. Also on offer a selection of stamps and special covers. Comics, or as collectors would call them ‘graphic novels’ are in stock with Marvel being the most sought after. But Steve’s Collectables isn’t just a shop for men. “The Royal Doulton figurines are very popular with the ladies”, Steve confides.
The Jewish Burial Ground off Lambhay Hill has been granted Grade II listed status as a result of an application made by Plymouth City Council. The burial ground is accessible only through a black door in an anonymous Barbican wall, but it is one of the earliest Jewish burial grounds surviving in England and the earliest outside London. It also been listed in recognition of its well-recorded history, both in the form of paper records as well as the high degree of survival of original 18th and 19th Century material. The burial ground was originally created in a garden by a member of the community, and then expanded

Early tombstones are inscribed in Hebrew with occasional English transcriptions of the names of the dead on the reverse of the stones. The listing decision also says that records show that the first burials happened in 1744. The cemetery is owned by the Plymouth Synagogue and is locked but visits can be arranged. Last year an audio trail was created, thanks to funding from Vital Sparks, a Plymouth Culture project led by the council and funded by Arts Council England. Hope beyond our wildest dreams... By Ian Pilkington Trustee, Cross Rhythms Plymouth Christmas at Cross Rhythms is probably the same as Christmas anywhere else – we all get increasingly excited, usually from Thanksgiving Day onwards. Our programmes start to have a couple of Christmas songs, here and there, and build up until we’re playing entire shows full of Christmas Carols, and Christmas flavoured songs from every genre of music in our library. Our little microwave is already producing hot mince pies; Langage Farm will double their profits as our small team imbibes a disproportionately large amount of clotted and double cream, and there will generally be more mirth and goodwill than usual (and we’re quite a happy lot anyway). Our presenters will have fun along with their listeners, with the levels of general mayhem in the Breakfast and
Afternoon Shows increasing along with the anticipation of this most special time of the year.
So much for the fun and games of Christmas – all good, and just what everyone needs in the middle of Winter. But it’s about more than that. The true message of the Christian festival of Christmas is one of hope beyond our wildest dreams, the story of God himself coming to us to restore us to his Love – but it’s also the story of the birth of a baby, born in socially unacceptable circumstances, whose parents were forced to flee their home for a few years because of persecution from the rulers of their own country. (Ring any bells?) When they eventually returned, the stigma of how people back home perceived Jesus’ parentage would be an undercurrent for the rest of their lives (Mary was, after all, pregnant before she was married and people heard rumours that she even had the temerity to say it was somehow God who was involved). Joseph, for those who did not believe the story, would be seen in the culture of his day as a cuckold, a man whose wife cheated on him. And as for Jesus … well, later in life the leaders of the religious sect known as the Pharisees made snide references to what they thought of his parental line.
And yet … for two thousand years, millions (if not billions) of people have discovered that when they simply believe and trust what the Bible says about Jesus - the Son of God who became a man and lived among us they find peace, hope and an eternity of joy; and grace to love others and make a difference while we’re here in this mortal body. It sounds ludicrously simple, too simple – ‘just believe, and receive God’s gift’, but that’s clearly the message of Christmas. If you cannot get to one of the many wonderful church services or carol concerts, you can tune into Cross Rhythms anytime of day, any day of the week, and hear songs that are filled with a message of hope. You may also hear presenters who are filled with mince pies and cream - please forgive them over the next few weeks if they seem ridiculously happy, because in this season, they have good reason.
Listen to Cross Rhythms programmes 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year on 96.3FM or online at www.crossrhythms.co.uk/ plymouth. Also, download Cross Rhythms Plymouth app from Google Play and the Apple app store.

God’s special gift for us all By Revd Chris Clewer Chairman, Churches Together in Plymouth
Plymouth Central Hall Drake Circus, PL1 1BA We warmly welcome you this Christmas to our services and other events for all the family as we celebrate this special time of year.
It’s come to that time of year, when we look harder around the shops (and internet) for those special presents for our ‘special people.’
Devonport Community Baptist Church, meeting at the Welcome Hall, Fore Street, Devonport
When we appreciate the pretty Christmas lights brightening homes and streets; and when we wonder how we’ll get through another ‘festive season’ without putting on too much weight. At the same time there are 120 churches across Plymouth preparing their own special events – for their ‘special people’. Advent services, Nativity plays, Candlelit Carols, Midnight Communion, Family celebrations. And all because God did something VERY special – He sent His own Son into the world on that first Christmas, 2,017 years ago.
We would love to welcome you this Christmas, in the season of Hope, Joy and Peace!
This was such a life-changing, history making event that we have recognised it ever since, whenever we write our 2017AD date! Anno Domini (in the Year of Our Lord) – for in that year, 0AD, God stepped into our world, and into our darkness - to ‘bring a great light’ (Isaiah 9v2).
STOKE DAMEREL AND ST AUBYN’S CHRISTMAS SERVICES AND EVENTS 2017
This was the special light of God, a light of truth, wisdom and indeed, Salvation. A light that shines not into our eyes, but into our hearts, that brightens not our homes, but our lives, a light that lasts not for a season, but for a life-time and one that carries the extra label ‘everlasting’. For as John 3v16 says, ‘God so loved the world, that He sent His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life’. A gift not just for our time, but also our eternity! It is the most hope-filled glorious present ever, but as with every good present, it not only had to be delivered, but it also has to be received. For God says in John 1v12, ‘to all who receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God’. So we, the 120 churches across this great city, invite you, to come and find out more about this special gift from our Heavenly Father – because the special person this Christmas – is YOU! Work begins on theatre’s giant bronze sculpture Cultural leaders behind the plan to create a giant bronze sculpture in Plymouth have come face-to-face with her in foam form as work gets underway.
Children at two Plymouth nurseries have been pulling out all the stops for Children in Need this year.
Craftsmen have begun the lengthy process of cutting, moulding and casting ‘Bianca’, as she is commonly know, in to what will become a unique and striking piece of public art for the city.
The Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-Schools in Fort View, Crownhill and Springhill Green, Pennycross got together to hold a special treasure hunt at Jump soft play in Plymouth. The children were delighted when Pudsey himself made an appearance to thank them for their fundraising efforts.
Around 150 individual sections will be cast in bronze and then welded together to create the eye-catching sculpture depicting a dynamic and powerful woman. The finished sculpture will measure seven-metres (23ft) tall and nine-metres (30ft) wide and is scheduled to take up residence outside the Theatre Royal Plymouth in late 2018/early 2019.
Bev Driffield from Mama Bear’s Day Nursery said: “We are great supporters of Children in Need every year and each one of our nurseries is taking part in their own unique activities to raise money for the charity.
Cornish-born artist Joseph Hillier was commissioned by the Theatre to create the dramatic sculpture to complete its £7.5million regeneration project. Plans were approved by Plymouth City Council in February and work on the project began last month. Joseph and Adrian Vinken OBE, chief executive of Theatre Royal Plymouth, recently visited three factories involved in creating the sculpture to see Plymouth’s new resident taking shape. First stop was Bakers Patterns Ltd in Telford where ‘Bianca’s’ face was carved from a giant block of polyurethane foam in order to make a mould. John Baker, company owner and managing director, said that Joseph’s 360-degree Computer Aided Design (CAD) of ‘Bianca’ was broken down into more manageable sections before each part is then carved into foam using a giant machine with a jumbo drill bit revolving at 7,000 times a minute. The foam sections are then glued together to create larger chunks, which are then hand sanded to ensure the perfect finish. John said: “Essentially we programme our cutting machine to carve out a design into blocks of polyurethane foam. It’s a bit like carving the contours of a map. We are so excited to be working on this project because of the sheer enormity of it, and because it is a piece of public art which
Pudsey thanks youngsters
Sculptor Joseph Hillier and Theatre Royal’s Adrian Vinken (right) with the cast of what will be the statue’s face
will become a part of people’s daily lives.” As he watched Bianca’s face slowly take shape in the foam, Joseph said: “It is really exciting to see Bianca emerging at last in real material having previously been a tentative model on a screen.” As Bianca’s face was given a final clearance check, Adrian appeared visibly taken aback by the result. He said: “We always knew we wanted this piece to be really big but it is only when you come here and see a small section of it, and see the excitement and pride in the guys working on it here, that it starts to really dawn on you just what a big undertaking the project is and how many people are involved in bringing it into reality. It’s a bit overwhelming really.” Each finished foam section is then carefully transported to Liverpool where Castle Fine Arts Foundry create silicon moulds. These are then taken to the company’s foundry in the tiny Welsh village of Llanrhaeadr, where the bronze casting process begins. Chris Butler, managing director of Castle Fine Arts
Foundry, said: “It is our job to turn the foam pattern into bronze. First we make a silicon rubber mould to take a negative version of the pattern, which is then handpainted with layers of wax. “A shell of ceramic is built around the wax. This is fired in a kiln, which burns off the wax but leaves behind a hard ceramic surround.” Ingots of bronze are then heated to 1200 degrees C before the molten metal is poured into the new ceramic moulds. Chris added: “When we break away the shell, we’re left with a bronze version of the original pattern. This process will continue over the next seven months before the individual panels of bronze will be fabricated together to create the final sculpture. “It really is fantastic to see, bit by bit, this amazing structure slowly come to life.” As Bianca takes shape over the next few months, Theatre bosses will be exploring how to bring this iconic piece of public art from Wales to her new home in Plymouth in time for the official unveiling sometime next winter.
“It’s a great event for the children to get involved in and, of course, a fantastic cause to support. Last year we raised almost £6000 so we’re hoping to get to that fantastic figure again.“ The family-run Mama Bear’s Day Nurseries provide care for children from three months to five years. There are now 23 settings across Bristol, Somerset and Devon all of which will be raising money for Children in Need. Major transatlantic races to be featured in 2020 Two major transatlantic yacht races will be taking place in 2020, the Royal Western Yacht Club has announced. The next OSTAR, the original singlehanded transatlantic race, and the TWOSTAR, for two handed yachts will celebrate 60 years of shorthanded racing by the Royal Western Yacht Club. The OSTAR, conceived by Cockleshell hero Blondie Hasler, was first run in 1960 when it was won by Francis Chichester later knighted for his exploits. I n 1964 the second race was won by Frenchman Eric Tabarly, awarded the Legion d’Honneur by President de Gaulle, who ignited a love of oceanic shorthanded sailing amongst the French. There have been many copies of the OSTAR but none have outlived the original race which has been run by the Royal Western Yacht Club continuously for 60 years. The TWOSTAR, the two handed equivalent of the OSTAR, was first sailed in 1981 and has continued
with only a short break in the early 2000s. Neil Dunkley, race director, commented: “The races attract two types of sailors: firstly those with a passion for short handed racing with a lifelong ambition to tackle this extremely challenging race for their own personal satisfaction; secondly those who wish to use the event as a stepping stone toward a professional short handed sailing career. “Either way, you need to be tough, extremely well prepared both

mentally and physically with a yacht that can withstand a month of upwind sailing in the north Atlantic. Two challenges confront the sailors – getting to the start line and completing the race.” The races conform to the Corinthian ethos envisaged by Hasler, who saw the races as being sailor against the weather, into the prevailing North Atlantic winds and currents, as much as against the other boats. Especially true this year which saw the worst weather since the 1976 race.

Step in the right direction! If you fancy a walk on the moors, in the countryside or on the coast, then a new book just published, has everything you need. Plym Ramblers, which is a walking club based in Plymouth, has just produced a book entitled On the Beaten Track 4. As the name implies, this is the fourth book in the series of popular walks, easily accessed from Plymouth. There are 25 walks in this well presented book and the distances covered vary between four and eight miles. Each walk has step by step directions and an informative map, as well as plenty of photographs and illustrations. On the Beaten Track 4 is an attractive publication with some interesting and unusual features. As well as illustrations and photographs, there are a variety of cartoons dotted about and the special ‘points of interest’ section provides some entertaining and informative details about each walk, which should appeal to everyone. The book was written by Brian Steele (chairman of the Plym Ramblers) and he was assisted in this task by Chris and Dave Bishop who provided the points of interest information and members of the Plym Ramblers and others who checked all the walks for accuracy. This means that we can be confident that the route descriptions should be ok for a few years to come. Brian, in describing the book, stressed that its purpose is to encourage people to take up walking as a hobby/ pastime. It is particularly useful for families and friends, Prince Rock Dog Training Club Puppies to adult classes, obedience training, socialisation. Improving play at Miller Way
Over 70 local children and adults joined council staff to celebrate the official opening of a new play park in Estover.
The park at Miller Way has been fitted with new and refurbished equipment with a dedicated, fenced area for toddlers. Meanwhile, a brand new BMX dirt track has been installed. Hands Up For Plymouth Play, a project led by Plymouth City Council, hosted the event with colleagues from Youth Services and laid on a barbeque, free bike maintenance with Plymotion, painting and much, much more to celebrate the opening of the new facility.
Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning, said: “I’m delighted to see the park at Miller Way fully open. “We have a very clear policy to provide high quality play spaces within 400m of people’s homes and it’s so great to see children enjoying themselves during the half-term holiday. “It’s so important that children have great places to play outdoors and access to nature. We know that when they do, they become fitter and leaner, develop stronger immune systems, have more active imaginations, lower stress levels, play more creatively and have greater respect for

Miller Way is just one of a number of parks to benefit from the pledge to invest announced in May, which has since been branded Hands Up For Plymouth Play. As part of evidence gathering for the Joint Local Plan, the council carried out an assessment of all of its play spaces across the city with 29 out of 126 outdoor play spaces rated as poor or very poor, according to Play England’s quality rating. New sponsorship deal will help drive golf programme in schools A new sponsorship deal looks set to help more Plymouth schoolchildren get into the swing of golf. Plymouth-based training provider Skills Group has donated £1,000 to Plymouth Junior Golf Academy. The money will go towards replacing old and tired equipment, buy ‘player of the week trophies’ and extend the Academy’s reach to local youngsters. Founded in 2015 by professional golfer Sam Stephens, Plymouth Junior Golf Academy runs free taster sessions in schools across the city. In the last two years ‘The School of Golf’ programme has offered after-school training to more than 5,000 youngsters across 26 primary schools in and around Plymouth. Plymouth Junior Golf Academy also runs 12-week-long programmes at Plymouth Golf Centre where more than 100 young members attend to develop their skills with tips from PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) experts.
Sam said: “Our schools programme is the lifeblood of our Academy, 80 per cent of the children attending the Academy have come through this programme, the vast majority having never played golf before.”
deliver at Plymouth Golf Centre.”
“There have been so many success stories through the scheme but it is the children from deprived backgrounds who are now members of local golf clubs which we are most proud of.”
He said: “I think it’s very important for children to get the opportunity to try all sports if possible. Golf is a great sport as you can play individually and also as part of a team. It is also good exercise and teaches you many skills.
Welcoming the sponsorship by Skills Group, Sam added: “This money is very important to us. It has allowed us to update old and tired equipment, buy some nice items such as, player of the week trophies and just generally improve our offering to young people. “Golf is a fantastic sport for children to play. As well as being outside in the fresh air and learning a new skill, golf has a unique standing amongst other sports with the skills-for-life it encourages. These include honesty, respect, cooperation, perseverance and teamwork. We promote these values and morals in every session we
Plymouth professional golfer Scott Drummond is an ambassador for Skills Group and welcomed the sponsorship of Plymouth Junior Golf Academy.
“Golf has come along way in the last few years, it is now much more accessible, with easier access to golf courses and driving ranges. Giving children the opportunity to get into the sport through school is a great way to get the game out there to more youngsters and is a fun environment as they are with their peers.
Scott Drummond (left) and Sam Stephens (right)
Mark Boulting, managing director of Skills Group, said: “We are delighted to support the provision of golf for local youngsters. Providing children with direct access to sports that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to try is a great way of broadening their life experiences.”
“Skills Group’s support of Plymouth Junior Academy is a really positive action that will hopefully enable the academy to reach more local children and support them with better equipment in the years to come.”
New life-saving equipment installed on The Hoe David Wells, HeartSWell South West Trustee, said: “We are very pleased to be able to donate this piece of equipment to the Liner Lookout Café.
A new defibrillator has been installed at the Liner Lookout Café on Plymouth Hoe, providing life-saving access to support the safety of the general public.
“Hopefully it will never be needed, but having a defibrillator located in a location as busy as the Hoe is essential and can be the saving grace in an emergency situation.”
The initiative to install the defibrillator device, supported by Plymouth Waterfront Partnership (PWP) and Plymouth City Council, was started by Liner Lookout Café owners Ann and David Morrish. A defibrillator is a machine which restarts the heart in the event of a cardiac arrest and if used correctly can save lives.
With support from Plymouth City Council, the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership has worked with the Liner Lookout Café to provide clear signage to make the public aware of this potentially life-saving piece of equipment.
On taking possession of the life-saving Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) machine, provided by the charity HeartSWell South West, Ann and David Morrish said: “With events happening all year round on Plymouth Hoe, and as a popular tourist hotspot in the city, it makes sense for a defibrillator to be available for public access should the unthinkable happen.
Sarah Gibson, chief executive for the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership said: “We’re delighted the Liner Lookout Café and HeartSWell have teamed up to provide a defibrillator on The Hoe. This iconic location within Plymouth’s Waterfront area attracts thousands of visitors every year. To have this lifesaving equipment available and clearly signed is an important addition to the area.”
“The commitment to raising awareness of this equipment to the public is a first for the city and we’d like to thank HeartSWell South West, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and Plymouth City Council for supporting this activity.”
To be able to continue to provide this piece of lifesaving equipment, HeartSWell rely heavily on fundraising activities and donations from the public. Find out more at heartswell.org.uk

Stiltskin’s Soapbox Children’s Theatre lifts Abercrombie Award A unique children’s theatre and a housing scheme to help veterans learn construction skills as well as have somewhere to live, were two of the projects to win in this year’s Abercrombie Awards. Plymouth’s best loved buildings – and the people who helped create them – where in the spotlight for the city’s Abercrombie Awards 2017. The awards, which are organised by Plymouth City Council every three years, are designed to celebrate the new buildings and spaces that have helped make Plymouth the city it is today. Stiltskin’s Soapbox Children’s theatre was chosen by the public to win the People of Plymouth award with over 1,000 votes cast. They also received a Highly Commended from the judges in the Best Community Project category. The regeneration of North Prospect was given the Judges Special Award for its role in transforming the city. The Nelson Project, a development born from a vision to deliver a flagship housing scheme, was made overall winner of the Abercrombie Award for demonstrating design excellence and innovation. Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning said: “All these projects have helped change the lives of people here in Plymouth. “The standard and variety of work to create places for businesses and homes and the amount of effort to involve as many local people as possible has been great to see. All these projects are bringing jobs and opportunities and a sense of pride into Plymouth.” Paul Barnard, assistant director for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure at Plymouth City Council added: “It’s fantastic to step outside the planning process and look at everything that has been achieved over the last three years. “Incredible buildings have sprung up, homes and streets that have changed the fortunes of an entire neighbourhood have been created and amazing spaces have been cultivated for local people to enjoy. The Abercrombie Awards celebrate the people and organisations who have made this happen.” There were over 60 entries over the eight main categories, with the three special awards above given on the night.

Olivia’s 12 day marathon challenge Olivia Hill, a dietetics student at Plymouth University and enthusiastic blogger, took up running a year ago as a means of keeping fit whilst living in Hong Kong.
“Almost everyone is capable, and I wanted to create a race to show people this and perhaps spark a new love or hobby of running. A marathon is a distance, a challenge, not a race, and this virtual challenge will have you completing that ‘impossible’ distance.”
She is now addicted to running and all it has to offer and will be taking part in the 2018 London Marathon to raise money for Variety, the Children’s Charity.
The 12 days of Christmas has been chosen for the challenge because the festive period is typically a time of increased food intake and lowered levels of physical exercise. This in turn causes people to feel sluggish and set unrealistic New Year’s resolutions.
To encourage more people to take up running, Olivia and partner Dominic have created a new marathon, accessible to almost everyone called the Twelve Day Marathon. This will be kick starting with the 12 Days of Christmas Marathon during which participants can complete the 26.2 miles over 12 days, however they wish. “We accept joggers, walkers, runners and skippers! It is a virtual challenge, so it can be completed anywhere!” said Olivia. “Once participants have completed their distance, they receive a themed marathon medal, so they can prove and show off their new achievement.” Olivia, whose Instagram account @thenutritiousrunner has already attracted over 1500 followers, continues to explain why this is a challenge for everyone and anyone. “So many of my friends always say to me ‘I wish I could run a marathon’ and I have always replied ‘but you can.’ It is only the belief in yourself that is lacking!
The challenge runs from December 25 to January 5, to carry participants through to the New Year and then hopefully onwards as they get the same buzz for running that Olivia did when she started. Any profits will go to Variety, the Children’s Charity, which raises money for sick, disabled and disadvantaged children. She hopes to raise enough funds to help them buy wheelchairs and specialist equipment. As an added bonus to raising money for a great cause and getting fitter in the process, finishers will also receive an ‘awesome marathon finishers medal’. To register, or find out more, visit the newly launched website www.twelvedaymarathon.org, or visit @ twelvedaymarathon and @thenutritiousrunner on Instagram. Entrants will need to be signed up by the deadline of December 3.

Local and national charities received over £400,000 from Britain’s Ocean City running series This year saw over 7,000 runners take to Plymouth’s closed-roads in the Plymouth 10k and the Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon which raised over £400,000 for charity. Participants raised money for a range of local and national charities including the The Shark Trust, Jeremiahs Journey, Age UK and St Luke’s Hospice. The Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon will return on the May 20 at Plymouth Hoe. Registration for the race is already open. Alongside the main event, there will also be a charity mascot race and the Wessex RFCA Corporate and Services Challenge where teams compete to win £250 for their chosen charity. David Williams, director of RunPlymouth said: “We are delighted with the impact the Plymouth 10k and Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon have had on charity fundraising. We hope that our events in 2018 will be even bigger and better for all involved, from runners and charities alike”. Peter Ward, Community Fundraising, St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth said: “Over 40 participants ran and raised money for St Luke’s at the Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon 2017. St Luke’s runners have raised an incredible amount which is so important to running of the crucial service our end of life care teams provide.” More information can be found: www.runplymouth.co.uk

Specialist accreditations for legal duo Two solicitors from multisector law firm, GA Solicitors, have secured a hat-trick of specialist legal accreditations in their niche area of the law; wills, inheritance and trust disputes. Anna Wonnacott is now a full member of ACTAPS (Association of Contentious Trusts and Probate Specialists), making her one of just four solicitors in the city to have achieved this status. Angelo Micciche has been made an associate member of ACTAPS and also an affiliate member of STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners). ACTAPS is the leading association for lawyers specialising in contentious trust and probate work and was established to enhance the specialist knowledge and expertise
of practitioners working in this niche area. STEP is the global professional association for practitioners specialising in family inheritance and succession planning, both in regards to contentious and non-contentious matters. Anna and Angelo are the only solicitors in Plymouth to be listed under the banner of contentious trusts and estates. Speaking of her full membership, Anna commented: “We have seen a significant increase in the demand for wills, inheritance and trust disputes and GA Solicitors is one of only a handful of firms across Devon and Cornwall to have a specialist team working within this area. “It takes a lot of work to gain these accreditations and Angelo and I have had to demonstrate a huge amount of experience in this specialist area. Clients can instruct GA Solicitors on any contentious
matter and be confident that they will get expert legal advice in what is often a very complex area.” Stephen Ramsden, managing partner of GA Solicitors, added: “There are very few firms across Devon and Cornwall who are able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge and expertise in this specialist area. It is testament to the hard work and dedication of Anna and Angelo that they have been awarded these accreditations and it is very well deserved. The feedback from clients is more than positive and the results they achieve speak for themselves.” With more than 200 years of heritage, GA Solicitors is a multisector Plymouth law firm with 74 members of staff, offering guidance across seven specialist departments: business; family; employment; dispute resolution; wills, trusts & probate; conveyancing and personal injury.
MONEY MA££ERS with STEVE CAREY
Christmas Cheer! The world seems less full of Christmas Cheer than ever. UK interest rates have just gone up for the first time in a decade, and despite more people being in work than ever before, wages are being held back by a chronic lack of productivity. All of which suggests that there’s much less money to go around this year than in previous years. An antidote Necessity is the mother of invention, according to the old proverb, so if you are short of cash, you need to get creative. Here’s a few ideas, but add your own. First steps Work out how much you can afford to spend without borrowing any money (I know, the old ‘budget’ chestnut again, but it works). Make a list of all the people for whom you would like to buy presents. Then, make a note of their favourite pastimes/occupations/ music next to their name. Start your research Are you able to construct a similar present from the raw materials? For example, do you have a relative who would love an album of family photos? You can design one online, and this may mean more to them, than simply buying a shop bought one, as you can add
your own labels and text. If they like antiques, or antiquelooking items, could you find something in a cheaper retailer than you were planning? Charity shops are a great source of ‘old fashioned’ items, and retro style is all the rage at the moment (or so I’m told by those who know about these things!) Talk to your friends; I have many friends who are amazingly talented. If you don’t feel able to make presents yourself, perhaps you could ask a friend, or work alongside them. ‘Mates rates’ are far cheaper than shop prices.
Saving small amounts on nonChristmas items can help you afford the most expensive time of year. (Giving up one latte a week will save you over £100 a year at average prices; imagine cutting out five lattes a week!)
It may save a lot of time and effort if you can work out how people feel most loved; after all, you give presents because you want them to know how much they mean to you. It could be that someone on your list prefers time with you, more than presents. If so, can you find an event you could attend together, you can build some shared memories and spend time with them.
You could, with the agreement of the other person, stop sending presents for this year (or permanently).
Even if they cannot help with the actual making of presents, they may have seen ideas that you think are perfect. There’s no shame in swapping ideas. Making it affordable Of course, not all of us are creative and/or imaginative (that is certainly me), so we may have to go down the traditional present-buying route.
It has been reported that presents often cost far more than the value placed on them by the recipient, so a mutual agreement to avoid this “economic inefficiency” might prove beneficial to both families. Do it despite The doom and gloom should not stop you from enjoying time with friends and family. Whether you follow the Christian faith, or not, I wish you a very enjoyable peaceful, and prudently budgeted Christmas! Steve Carey, Numbers UK Ltd 01752 226084 www.numbersukltd.com

Better futures Providing support and opportunities for adults with learning disabilities
Improving Lives Plymouth’s Better Futures service, offers a unique style of service, providing a flexible day opportunity for adults with learning disabilities. It’s members can use it as a base to form friendships, get help and advice on day to day issues and develop the skills to become more independent. The flexible drop-in style membership scheme enables people to choose when to attend unlike traditional day services. Nikki Hornsby, Better Futures manager said: “People with learning disabilities can find social interaction difficult and need a place where they can meet their peers to socialise in a place where they feel safe and supported. “Many people find it hard to make friends and form relationships and find mainstream services frightening and therefore become isolated. Better Futures, offers a friendly and relaxed environment where people are supported to engage with others and enjoy interesting activities.” Better Futures offers a wide range of weekly
activities including craft, numeracy, IT and creative literacy.
It’s so important to have friends and to feel that our lives are meaningful”.
Sarah Lawrence, Better Future’s Assistant manager said: “A really popular activity is cookery and we support our members to make basic meals incorporating healthy ingredients and reducing the amount of sugar and fat wherever we can. People can rely heavily on fast food and convenience products and we hope to encourage people to have a go at making their own meals at home by suggesting easy to follow recipes. We do of course offer fun cookery as well and our members love to make a Christmas cake each year.
At Better Futures, staff and volunteers are always on hand to offer support and advice on a wide range of day to day issues and will signpost people for specialised help and support where appropriate.
Cathy Russell who has supported members at Better futures for several years says “Our ladies group has really helped our ladies learn about how to look after their health, stay safe and manage relationships and we also have fun chatting about make-up, clothes and fun things to do.
The number of deaths and injuries on our roads increases significantly as the evenings draw in and the weather deteriorates, with pedestrian and vehicle collisions peaking in October and November. Last winter 345 people were involved in collisions on the city’s roads.
Ian’s key projects across the region have included the regeneration of Padstow’s Waterfront, including Rick Stein’s Cookery School and his St. Petroc’s Hotel, and RYA Portland House - a training and accommodation facility built for the GB sailing squad competing in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Following Ian’s retirement, the South West architecture firm will continue to be led by fellow directors Marc Nash and Phil Burgess, supported by associates Bob McDonald, Dale Beeson and Patrick Deigan.
Recent high profile ADG projects include the Gaia Spa at Boringdon Hall Hotel, the ongoing delivery of the master plan for the regeneration of Mount Wise and the new £13million STEM Centre at City College Plymouth.
ADG employs a team of 21 at its offices in Plymouth and works with clients across the South West, as well as nationally and internationally.
ADG director Marc Nash said: “On behalf of the senior management team I would like to thank Ian for everything he has done to make ADG the successful firm it is today. It is unusual for business partners to have such a long working relationship and I think that has helped to give ADG a really solid foundation.”
Plymouth’s Be Safe, Be Seen campaign raises awareness of the dangers and reminds everyone, particularly those on their school journeys, to make sure they can be easily spotted on the roads. The council’s road safety team is visiting schools to promote the campaign to children and parents, delivering reflective stickers to place on school bags or coats and offering advice on staying safe.
Councillor Steve Ricketts, Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing Delivery, said: “There will always be an increased risk as the nights draw in and visibility worsens and the peak time for a collision is during the evening rush hour – between 4pm and 6pm. We’re running this campaign to make sure everyone can be seen on the road and that we all make an extra
Over the last 32 years, the team has been behind a number of major projects in Plymouth and the South West. Ian’s projects have included the new Plymouth Fish Market for Sutton Harbour Company, The Sherwell Centre on North Hill for the University of Plymouth, The Plymouth Foyer in Stonehouse for DCH, the Azure Apartments on the Hoe, Berkeley Square and Plymouth University Peninsula School of Dentistry, Derriford.
ADG director Phil Burgess added: “Ian has been an excellent leader, particularly in helping to keep ADG stable during recessions. The senior management team is now extremely well positioned to take the firm forward to its next phase. With a number of major projects underway, this is a very exciting time for ADG as we build on the successes of the last three decades and continue in our journey.”
Nikki added: “I like to think that we not only offer a safe place for people with learning disabilities to come and spend time with others but also provide a preventative service. Seeing people regularly enables us to see when they are for example becoming unwell or are self- neglecting or getting into debt. By offering help and support at an early stage we can help people before they reach crisis and can refer people to other specialist services. This intervention can minimise the stress and anxiety people face, and provide assurance that staff are always here to listen to them and help them”. Stagecoach announces changes to Route 1 Service in Plymouth Stagecoach has confirmed it will be introducing an alteration to its route 1 service to improve access to Plymouth Railway Station from November 26.
Be safe, be seen this winter The clocks have gone back, the days are getting shorter and darker, wetter and colder conditions are starting to set in – which means pedestrians and cyclists are less visible to motorists.
The Architects Design Group has announced the retirement of Ian Potts, one of its three founders and directors. Ian has confirmed that he will retire from his directorship at the end of 2017.
Three Plymouth School of Architecture graduates, Marc Nash and Phil Burgess joined Ian Potts, to found ADG in 1985.
“We made 21 cakes with people last year and they each had the opportunity to design and decorate them in their own style. People get a real sense of achievement from such an activity and can’t wait to show off their cakes to their families.”
Plymouth City Council is teaming up with Radio Plymouth and SWH Group to remind all road users to ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ during the autumn and winter months.

effort to look out for each other this winter.”
Be Safe, Be Seen and follow these tips when walking and cycling: • Make sure you’re visible to other road users and pedestrians • Keep away from the kerb • Wear bright or fluorescent clothing in daylight or poor light • Wear reflective clothing at night; it shows up in car headlights. Fluorescent clothing is not as visible after dark • Always use lights when cycling in the dark, in the rain or if the weather is overcast – white lights at the front and red at the rear. • Make sure your lights are working – it is illegal to ride on the road with no lights in the dark.
The alteration is in response to customer suggestions and will see buses from Tavistock serving North Road East instead of North Hill, providing a much closer connection to Plymouth Railway Station. Customers who wish to travel from the station towards Tavistock will also need to board the in-bound service and then remain on the bus as it goes via the city centre and Plymouth University before heading back to Tavistock. The route change will apply to all journeys on the service, effectively doubling the frequency to the station when compared to the original X1 service. It will also provide connections in the evenings and on Sundays for the very first time, create a new link between Mutley Plain and the Station and further enhance the number of buses running directly from Derriford
Hospital to the Station. Robert Williams, commercial director for Stagecoach South West commented: “I’d like to thank all the members of the public who took the time to make constructive suggestions on how to improve our service and better meet their needs. Whilst we can’t accommodate everybody’s request, I hope that this change will improve the service for the majority of people in the area.” Stagecoach has also announced the trial of a Sunday Park & Ride service operating on the five Sundays before Christmas. Buses will run from the George Junction and Milehouse (100/101) sites from just after 9am with the last service leaving the city centre at 5.30pm. There will also be an improved frequency on Saturday journeys on Coypool Park & Ride (200) however this will remain closed on Sundays. New timetables will shortly be available in print and at www.stagecoachbus.com. For journey planning on the move and day and 1 week mobile tickets, download the Stagecoach Bus app free from the App and Play stores.

£13 million STEM Centre of Excellence officially opened City College Plymouth’s Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM has been officially opened with an exclusive tour and ribbon cutting ceremony.
The £13million state-of-the-art facility, which has been shortlisted for the Best New Building at this year’s Abercrombie Awards, provides a flexible learning environment that simulates ‘real work’ scenarios with industry-standard workshops, science and sport laboratories and media studios. It is equipped with hightech resources to support a broader and more relevant STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) curriculum. Plymouth City Council leader, Ian Bowyer, and Chris Garcia, chief executive of the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, joined City College’s Principal and Chief Executive, Phil Davies and Chair of Governors, Nick Holman, for a ribbon cutting ceremony and the unveiling of a plaque marking the building’s official opening. Representatives from those involved in the project, including the Architects Design Group and Kier Construction Ltd, were also in attendance. Phil Davies, principal and chief executive of City College, said: “It is with a sense of real accomplishment that we mark the official opening of the College’s new Regional Centre of Excellence for STEM. This £13million facility is the greatest investment in skills training in Plymouth for many years. “It is the college’s direct response to the skills shortages that have been identified in the region’s economic strategies and planning over the past decade. With a greater emphasis on STEM skills, the college is now perfectly placed to support young people and businesses who need the next generation of students to be equipped with STEM-related skills and knowledge. “I extend my thanks to our funders, the Heart of the
South West Local Enterprise Partnership, Plymouth City Council and the Regional Growth Fund, and to all of our employer partners for making this Regional Centre of Excellence a reality.” Chris Garcia said: “I’m delighted to see the new STEM Centre opening at City College Plymouth. This was one of our first Growth Deal projects to get off the ground in 2015, helped by our funding of £5.43m. “In the early days of the LEP we recognised that our area’s labour market would benefit from a significant injection of skills in the subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths to meet the demands of the growing economy.
“This new centre offers students state-of-the-art facilities to encourage young people to take up STEM subjects and enable those already in work to upskill and take on higher value careers.” Council leader Ian Bowyer unveils the plaque to mark the opening of the STEM Centre

The spectacular two-day event, which celebrated its 21st anniversary in August, has been held on Plymouth Hoe ever since it began in 1997 and attracts more than 100,000 visitors from all over the country and beyond every year, generating around £4 million of income for the local economy.
Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “Plymouth – Britain’s Ocean City – is the perfect venue for the British Firework Championships. We’ve built a great relationship with TESA and we’re over the moon that they want to hold the event in Plymouth for another 12 years. The event just goes from strength to strength and we’re really looking forward to seeing it grow even further in the build-up to Mayflower 2020 and beyond.”

grow the event. Potential opportunities include additional days, more family-friendly entertainment and bigger stage shows alongside text voting. TESA director Jim Winship said: “Plymouth provides a brilliant amphitheatre for the championships and we are delighted that our partnership with the city is to continue for another 12 years. “Over the past 21 years the event has grown in popularity and we look forward to continuing to work closely with the Council to further develop the event and provide an annual pyrotechnic spectacle over Plymouth Sound.” The next British Firework Championships will take place on Wednesday August 8 and 9 2018.
