FIRST WORD

A very happy New Year to all our members, patrons, partners and supporters!

As we welcome in 2025, this edition of Profile offers us the opportunity to reflect on an incredible last 12 months for the Devon Chamber and so many businesses across the region.

Skills and training is very much one of the keys to so many of the success stories we’ve shared this year.

That’s why we’re delighted to be partnering with City College Plymouth for this first edition of the New Year to shine the spotlight on skills, employment and recruitment.

The College continues to make a significant contribution to meeting the skills needs so many businesses need today and will need for the future.

Its innovative programmes build realworld skills and are driven by the College’s passionate commitment to collaborating with employers across Devon and beyond.

This ethos fits in perfectly with our Devon & Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP), and the team are hosting an Exclusive Employer Skills Summit this January to help lead the charge in transforming skills, training, and workforce development.

In this edition, we also focus on North Devon as a hotspot for growth and success - ripe with opportunities for skills and training to boost your workforce.

Throughout 2025, our Chamber team will be offering you exciting networking opportunities right across the county, from Plymouth in the south all the way up to North Devon, where you’ll find a thriving community of global businesses. Visit our website to see the full calendar!

Next, I want to say a special thank you to everyone who joined us at the Plymouth Life

Centre in October for the Devon Business Show.

None of it would have been possible without our amazing partners - including our headliners, City College Plymouth, YGS Landscapes Ltd and SocieTree, and Find It In Plymouth - not to mention our dedicated Chamber team who made sure everything on the day ran smoothly and like clockwork.

This edition features our favourite pics from an unforgettable event, and I’m thrilled to say that we’ve already opened bookings for 2025!

As I’ve already mentioned, it has been an incredible few months here at the Devon Chamber of Commerce, following the merger of the Devon & Plymouth and Exeter Chambers uniting to create one new umbrella business organisation.

Now, our Chamber Family has become even stronger by the news that Brittany Ferries and South Devon College have both stepped up to become Patrons of the Chamber.

These exciting new partnerships exemplify the collaborative spirit we aim to cultivate within our Chamber Family, and we look forward to working together to support businesses in navigating future challenges and opportunities.

Finally, I’d like to wish a very happy birthday to former chamber Chair Suzanne Sparrow, who turned 100 on 23 November. From everyone at the Chamber, we hope you had a wonderful birthday, Suzanne!

STUART

A HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY TO ONE OF DEVON’S INFLUENTIAL BUSINESS FIGURES

Congratulations to Suzanne Sparrow, a former chair of the Chamber and one of Devon’s most influential business figures, who celebrated her 100th birthday on 23 November 2024.

Suzanne’s continued passion, determination and dedication serves as a huge inspiration for all who know her.

Born and bred in Plymouth, Suzanne attended Plymouth High School for Girls, before joining the Royal Navy at the age of 17 and following in her father’s footsteps. She even survived her home being blitzed in 1941.

After being released from service at the end of World War II, Suzanne worked in various jobs - including being secretary at the Marine Research Laboratory at Newton Ferrers.

During her time there, she met many visitors from overseas, some of whom had limited spoken English.

It was that which inspired her to set up the Suzanne Sparrow Plymouth Language School, which last year celebrated its 45th anniversary (you can read our full interview with Suzanne on our website).

Suzanne and her business joined the

Plymouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1979 at a time where attitudes to women in business were not what they are today

And it’s testament to her incredible character that in 1988, she became Chair of the Chamber.

In recent years, understandably Suzanne has passed over the day-to-day running of the North Road-based school to her daughter, Hilary Desvernay, who is now principal.

But she admits that she “doesn’t know the word ‘retirement’,” and still maintains a handson role from her home in the South Hams.

One of Suzanne’s proudest moments came in 2009 when she was awarded a Doctorate by the University of Plymouth for her contribution to education.

In 2016, she also won the 2016 Lifetime Achievement honour at the Plymouth Business Awards, given to the businessman or woman who has made a considerable, profitable and lasting contribution to business in the city.

Suzanne is proud of her Plymouth roots, and is equally more proud of what her School has achieved in the last 45 years.

“I cannot say I’m putting my feet up

because I am still fairly active,” she says. “And I’m very pleased when people turn up at the school, particularly those who have been before or who are now sending their children and, of course, grandchildren as well. So it’s of great interest still.

“I will always love the fact that people are so nice and so kind in Plymouth,” she says.

“There are many, many very kind and helpful families and this is what has maintained the School. I think we’ve done our part in selling Plymouth as a brilliant city to come to.”

From everyone at the Devon Chamber, we hope you had a wonderful birthday, Suzanne!

DOUBLE SUCCESS FOR THE FAMILY LAW COMPANY AT NATIONAL AWARDS

South West legal specialist The Family Law Company is celebrating two successes in the national Family Law Awards.

Imran Khodabocus was named Family Law Partner of the Year. Imran heads up the firm’s Private Law and Domestic Abuse team; for this award, he was recognized for his contribution to raising awareness of honour based abuse, and his current focus on providing and promoting training about the issue for frontline workers.

He was also recognized for his work internally; as Chair of the company’s internal Training and Development committee, Imran has put in place a new training structure that provides support and opportunities for team members to develop their skills.

Joint-MD Rachel Buckley said: “Imran is an integral part of what makes The Family Law Company so special. His commitment to his client’s best interests and wellbeing and to our colleagues’ learning and development is second to none. Congratulations Imran for your commitment and dedication.”

The New Client Team scooped Legal Support Team of the Year, the second year in

a row that The Family Law Company has had success in this category, which recognises the supporting acts that are so important to the legal sector.

Comprising the ‘First Impressions’ Team, the initial contact for client enquiries, and the Client Call Team who respond to these enquiries, the team has revolutionized the early client experience, making sure that the process for clients, who are often emotionally distressed, is as smooth as possible.

Business Development Director Kerry England who was central to the formation of the team, said: “We take great pride in our ability to assist people from all walks of life by adapting our knowledge and skills to their unique needs in a compassionate and innovative manner. It’s great to see this recognised by The Family Law Awards.

“Our clients inspire us every day to go above and beyond, and this achievement reflects the dedication of our entire team.”

Imran, along with Jessica Everett, Jess Hammett and Ruth Mingo from the Client Team were on hand to receive their awards, presented by comedian and awards host Lucy

CITY COLLEGE PLYMOUTH

Empowering futures as the innovative hub for growth, skills and training

At City College Plymouth, we make a significant contribution to meeting the skills needs of today’s fast-paced, competitive world. We take pride in delivering a purposeful and impactful skills curriculum that shapes the future and drives a highly skilled workforce for our local, regional, and global communities.

Colleges are recognised as anchor institutions for skills, playing a critical role in shaping the workforce of today and tomorrow. At City College, we are at the forefront of innovative programmes that build realworld skills and are driven by a passionate commitment to collaboration with employers. We are not just about preparing students for jobs, we are developing workforces capable of meeting the evolving demands businesses will face in the years ahead.

The College is leading the way in creating a digital learning environment and organisational culture that positively impacts on the health, wellbeing and sustainability of our community.

Ensuring people are equipped with the skills for the jobs of tomorrow

Earlier this year, we launched a groundbreaking state-of-the-art Engineering and Nuclear Skills building, featuring cuttingedge technology equipped with the South West’s first fully immersive classroom,

augmented reality and virtual reality facilities. Developed in partnership with Babcock International Group and the National College for Nuclear, it provides the workforce of the future with the vital skills required to advance the expertise needed in sectors such as defence and energy.

The multi-million-pound investments reinforce the College’s commitment to creating teaching environments developed in collaboration with industry partners to meet their specific needs. These state-of-the-art facilities will not only enable the expansion of a demand-driven curriculum, but also enhance strategic partnerships with key employers in the city, National College for Nuclear partners, and other important stakeholders. The impact of these developments will be felt locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.

Our pioneering skills routemap, Caerus, designed to address critical skills shortages and empower individuals in Plymouth and beyond, was launched in October at Market Hall in Devonport. Developed in collaboration with employers, educational institutions, and community stakeholders, Caerus marks a significant step forward in skills development.

Caerus will empower young people and adults by realising their aspirations, strengths, interests, and potential career pathways. It provides an interactive skills routemap, helping individuals identify their strengths and explore various career paths. With a focus on essential skills for high-value careers, Caerus raises aspirations and career awareness, motivating individuals to transform their lives.

Caerus supports social mobility, equity, and inclusion. By tackling skills shortages and narrowing key skills gaps in critical industries, Caerus is creating equal opportunities for all. It also supports intergenerational challenges, empowering individuals to upskill and reskill, thereby encouraging long-term, sustainable career growth in sectors vital to Plymouth and beyond.

Good mental health and wellbeing are crucial

At City College, we are committed to nurturing happier, healthier, and more productive individuals, shaping the future of both our students and our people. Good mental health and wellbeing have become vital pillars in today’s workforce, influencing not just individual lives, but the overall productivity and success of organisations. In an era where employee wellbeing is essential, rather than optional, creating supportive environments is key.

A prime example of this commitment is the College’s new Pastoral Suite, a dedicated space designed to prioritise the mental health and wellbeing of our students. As Chief Executive Jackie Grubb states, mental

health support is “at the heart of what we do”. The Pastoral Suite offers privacy and direct access to a dedicated support team, providing one-to-one pastoral assistance when needed. It features discreet, private spaces for confidential discussions, encouraging students to confidently seek support. The suite is empowering students to continue their studies with the resilience and determination necessary to progress along their chosen pathways. Since the suite opened in October, over 220 students have benefited from the support provided.

Investing now for our digital future

Beyond mental health, we also recognise the importance of equipping students with the digital skills they need to succeed in the modern workplace. Today, and in the years to come, digital skills sit front and centre in terms of UK job creation and economic growth. It’s not just about giving the workers of tomorrow the skills they need now, it’s about creating the

next generation of innovators and leaders.

City College has placed itself at the forefront of innovation, having invested in cutting-edge technology, including artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented realities, cloud computing and cyber security that benefits students, lecturers, and ultimately employers.

Delivered in our digitally enabled classrooms we ensure environments that are ideal for enhancing engagement and learning and driving these essential digital skills.

Apprenticeships playing a vital role for employers

As a leading provider of Apprenticeships in Plymouth and the wider region, City College plays a crucial role in equipping apprentices with the skills employers need. The skills apprentices gain at the College, aligned with the latest industry advancements and best practices, help businesses thrive in an everevolving market.

With a third of UK vacancies due to skills

shortages, the demand for highly skilled people continues to grow as businesses seek to upskill their existing staff and recruit new talent. Apprenticeships provide an invaluable opportunity to address skill shortages, build a tailored workforce, and drive long-term success.

The College’s Apprenticeships team works closely with employers to identify the skills their future workforce needs, collaborating on tailored plans to address those needs. With more than 50 Apprenticeship standards spanning sectors such as construction, engineering, digital skills, business services, hospitality, health and social care, and more, the College provides businesses with access to a diverse pool of talented individuals ready to shape the future.

Long-established Plymouth company YGS Landscapes, which provides landscaping and grounds maintenance services, went one step further in its Apprenticeship programme for the benefit of their whole sector. As well as employing six apprentices amongst its 32-strong team, YGS worked with the College to develop a new training programme for what it saw as an under-served sector when it came to training and Apprenticeship provision. This culminated in the launch of a new, twoyear Level 2 Horticulture and Landscaping Apprenticeship, for the wider benefit of all who work in that field.

Bell Group, like YGS, is a strong advocate of Apprenticeship programmes. As a familyowned maintenance specialist with over 2,000 employees serving the entire country, the company recruits a number of apprentices from the College each year. Their apprentices - who play an integral role in the business

from the day they join - make the most of the highest standard of learning facilities and training environments. The result is that when they complete their Apprenticeships, they are fully equipped to begin their careers and make a genuine contribution to the business from the moment they start.

City College’s success is measured not just by the academic success of its students, but by the futures it enables. By focusing on skills, training, and employment pathways, they are redefining the educational experience, ensuring that students go into the wider world with the confidence, competence, and connections needed to excel in their careers. Through innovative programmes, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to student success, City College Plymouth is collaborating with hundreds of employers to help shape the workforce of tomorrow.

UNLOCK THE POWER OF BEHAVIOURAL INSIGHTS

Ever wondered why some teams thrive while others struggle?

The answer can be found by understanding behaviour - how people think, make decisions, and interact - to do this we need to understand behaviour profiling and insights training.

It’s not just theory or a one-off team exercise; it’s a practical approach for you and your team on improving and embedding great communication, teamwork and resilience in real-world situations. A way for you and your team to thrive, which then means your business also excels.

Our aim and focus is to help individuals and teams unlock their full potential. Imagine your team working seamlessly, tackling challenges with confidence, and bouncing back stronger after setbacks. Behavioural insights make this possible by helping you understand the “why” behind everyday actions.

WHAT CAN BEHAVIOURAL INSIGHTS DO FOR YOU?

• Enhance Communication: Learn to recognise and avoid common communication pitfalls specific to your personal behavioural preferences. Discover how to have clearer, more productive conversations—whether it’s giving feedback, resolving conflicts, or brainstorming ideas.

• Boost Team Resilience: Equip your team with tools to boost collaboration, and stay focused and adaptable under pressure. When the unexpected happens, behavioural insights help teams navigate change with ease.

• Foster a Positive Culture: Create an environment where people feel valued, heard and empowered. Small adjustments in processes like meetings or feedback can lead to big improvements in morale and performance.

HOW TO WORK WITH US

“Our aim and focus is to help individuals and teams unlock their full potential. Imagine your team working seamlessly, tackling challenges with confidence, and bouncing back stronger after setbacks.”

At Coops & Co our mission is to support you and strengthen your business through your people. As an experienced team from a diverse background, we can offer you the insights and expertise to bring the best out of your people through offering a bespoke approach and a different perspective.

We will work together with you and your teams to deliver tailored behavioural insights training, that aligns with your overall business objectives. This will be delivered through profiling and workshops that are engaging and motivating.

Let us help you transform your workplace into a space where people thrive. Whether you’re an individual looking to sharpen your skills, a leader aiming to boost your team’s performance or a business looking to embed a values and behaviour led culture, our behavioural insights training is the solution.

BABCOCK INCREASES CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Through apprentice and pre-apprenticeship programmes

Following on from a record-breaking apprentice intake in 2024, Babcock International Group has opened applications for its training programme for 2025 applicants, alongside delivery of an innovative new pre-apprenticeship engineering programme.

The company, which delivers critical support to the entire UK nuclear submarine fleet, is recruiting over 200 talented individuals to support the delivery of worldclass programmes.

The main apprenticeship programme is open to anyone of any age, and the site is seeking apprentices across a range of roles in engineering, skilled trades and business for its 2025 intake. Those welcomed onto the scheme will gain additional skills and set themselves up for a career supporting nationally important programmes, including the maintenance and refurbishment of Royal Navy submarines.

For those that might not currently meet

the apprenticeship requirements, Babcock has launched an innovative new engineering preapprenticeship scheme with City College Plymouth. This programme, which saw its first cohort of 18 start in September, provides an alternative route into Babcock for a broader range of talented people that just need some additional support to start their career. At the end of the yearlong programme those that complete it successfully are guaranteed a place on our apprenticeship programme the following year.

To open up the Engineering Preapprenticeship opportunity to as many people as possible, Babcock has piloted the use of gamification as a modern, inclusive recruitment tool, which allows players to demonstrate various skills through a fun platform with some mini games contained within it. This inclusive approach allows us to assess a candidate’s suitability for our programme through a selection tool aimed at a different demographic than our usual apprenticeship recruits.

Building on the success of the pre-

apprenticeship programmes to date, we are looking at expanding the programmes further across our other sites.

Harry Holt, Babcock Chief Executive Officer, Nuclear, said: “These programmes form part of a number of approaches across the UK that we are spearheading to secure the skills needed to deliver our nationally important defence programmes now, and in the future.

“At the heart of this is Babcock’s ongoing commitment to creating new opportunities for a broader range of people. Giving them the chance to experience a successful longterm career in defence and nuclear, and the unique opportunities and skilled technical training that comes with this.”

Application for its 2025 apprentice intake can be accessed via ApprenticeshipsBabcock Early Careers (babcockinternational.com)

Delivering excellent quality of service is vital for any company. It is a major factor in customer retention and provides the basis by which any company can grow.

Working with a variety of clients over the years we have come across a range of issues which can be all too common in counteracting this.

From quality problems which keep recurring and lead to losing customers, senior management teams having poor awareness of business management systems and even poor-quality performance due to not totally understanding the requirements of a particular client there are many things which can significantly impact business performance.

Companies have told us they struggle to

prepare for surveillance audits, they have employees who are confused about their roles and responsibilities and they need to implement certified business management systems in order sell their products and services.

Ignoring these issues isn’t an option and could be catastrophic for the future of a company.

If any of these issues sound familiar then we can help. Our continually updated service offerings include:

1. Expertise in the design, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of standalone and integrated ISO-certified business management systems.

2. Specialised in closed-loop management of internal audit processes to ensure the effectiveness of business management systems.

What’s more, membership in BWC offers so much more than just recognition. Businesses gain access to marketing opportunities tailored to their needs, whether that’s being showcased in directories, featured in online campaigns or highlighted in local promotions. HOW CAN YOU TELL HOW MUCH SOMETHING REALLY WEIGHS?

When you fill your car with fuel, how do you know you really are getting the number of litres it says you are? If you buy a pint in the pub, can you have confidence it’s actually a pint? Whether we realise it or not, our lives rely on us being able to trust that weights and measures are accurate. Sometimes this is just about ensuring we don’t get ripped off in the supermarket, but other times it can be life and death, such as guaranteeing doses of chemotherapy are accurate.

role to ensure that businesses comply with the laws around weights and measures across Devon, Somerset, Torbay and Plymouth. However, its role isn’t just about enforcing the law, it’s also about helping businesses ensure that when they’re dealing with weights and volumes, they can trust they are doing things both legally and accurately.

Heart of the South West Trading Standards operates the only UKAS accredited metrology laboratory in the south west that can calibrate weights with tolerances up to the E2 level (the kind of accuracy often needed in the pharmaceutical industry). The metrology

laboratory offers a weight calibration service to businesses that covers from as small as 1mg to over 20kg, so that companies in sectors from agriculture to aerospace can have confidence their weights are accurate and haven’t changed over time (which is more common than you might think). The laboratory can also verify weighing scales as well as volumes and lengths.

It’s the sort of work that many don’t even know exists, but it ensures that goods are produced in safe, consistent and legally compliant ways, and that buyers can trust what they’re being sold.

THE PERFECT WAY TO START THE BUSINESS SHOW DAY

TOP TIPS FOR EMPLOYEE RETENTION AND ENGAGEMENT

Employee retention and engagement are essential to building a thriving workplace. Good practices can reduce turnover costs and maximise team productivity. But many companies in the region are struggling with staff turnover and finding it difficult to recruit the right person to their team.

How can businesses retain and engage their team members effectively to boost staff retention and build a productive and positive workplace? Here are four areas to consider.

Recruitment

The starting point for staff retention and engagement is with good recruitment. Screening for stability can be a great indicator. For example, if you receive a CV that shows a candidate changes jobs every six months to a year, there may be a higher possibility that they won’t stick around for very long compared to someone else who stays with employers for several years.

Psychometric tests can allow hiring managers to see if candidates have suitable individual qualities, reveal valuable insights into candidates’ personalities and how well they will fit into the company culture. Pick the wrong person and there will likely be friction and frustration, and this can end in the person leaving. You can also give line managers a say in the selection process. This can mean they are more accountable and invested in their new team member’s success.

Growing new talent can also be a great way to invest in your people. For example, Westcotts is part of the Apprenticeships Ambassador Network South West and have a commitment to fostering apprenticeships opportunities.

Communication

Effective communication is at the heart of a productive, engaging workplace. When team members feel heard, valued, and informed, they are more likely to stay engaged and motivated. Clarity is paramount to ensuring that team members understand their roles, responsibilities and expectations. When they know what is expected of them, they can perform their duties more effectively, reducing misunderstandings and errors.

Regular feedback and six-monthly appraisals also allow for exchange between managers and team members, offering them a chance to be heard and helping to build trust. This is also a great chance for team members’

achievements to be recognised, boosting motivation and job satisfaction. This feedback time is also ideal for conflict prevention as employees can offer their views and ask questions, helping to prevent issues from escalating.

Leadership

Effective leadership is essential to employee retention. Statistics reveal that many employees leave jobs due to poor leadership rather than the job itself. Respectfulness, approachableness, trustworthiness and empathy are just some of the qualities found within a good leader. There are several ways to understand your own leadership and develop your skills, many of which are free. For example, asking for and listening to feedback and the CIPD/HSE stress management competency indicator assessment.

Understanding your team

Understanding what motivates your team members can significantly improve retention. While all employees appreciate respect and want to do a good job, individual motivations may vary and evolve. Over time you may get to know these, however, to help you can also use your appraisal process and team surveys to help understand priorities and motivations. Gaining a better understanding of your team can also help you find benefits that are most

valuable to them. Some of these won’t cost you anything, such as flexible working times and hybrid working options.

At Westcotts, we are proud to have achieved a Gold accreditation in Investors in People—a recognition of our commitment to our employees and developing a positive work environment.

BRITTANY FERRIES AT THE HELM AS NEW DEVON CHAMBER PATRON

Brittany Ferries, one of the Devon Chamber of Commerce’s most well-respected members and collaborators, has become our newest Patron.

The Patronage was officially unveiled during our September City Conversations event at Foot Anstey In Plymouth, where Sarah Jarvis, Finance Manager, and Paul Acheson, Director of Sales, were in attendance for the exciting announcement.

For more than 50 years, Brittany Ferries has been uniting the countries of the Atlantic Arc in trade and travel, revealing fabulous holiday destinations and the rich experience of travelling by sea.

The company was founded back in 1972 by Alexis Gourvennec and a group of fellow Breton farmers wanting to export their cauliflowers and artichokes to the UK.

From those humble beginnings, it has now cemented itself as the leading ferry operator on the western Channel.

Brittany Ferries’ impact here in the South West cannot be overstated, with its Plymouth port being ideally situated for passengers coming from the West of England and Wales to offer sailings to France and Spain.

In recent years, the firm has expanded its holiday programme, offering packages that combine ferry travel with curated accommodations and activities, catering to a wide range of travellers.

Dolphin sightings have also increased significantly, with passengers being able to enjoy these unique experiences on ferry crossings.

Its Pont-Aven ferry now features a “duck tail”, a modification designed to improve fuel efficiency by reducing water resistance, while two new LNG-powered ships, Salamanca and Santona, have joined the fleet, two further LNG Hybrid vessels Guillaume De Normandie and St Malo join the fleet early 2025 marking a shift towards greener operations and prioritising environmental sustainability.

Paul Acheson, Group Sales and Marketing Director, commented: “Proudly French and fiercely committed to the regions we serve; we have a unique and enduring relationship with Plymouth as it was our first port of call all those years ago in 1973.

“Plymouth and the South West is hugely important to us as we carry a mixture of freight and passengers through the port each year.

“Although we’ve been a member of the Chamber for a number of years, we’re keen to work closer with Stuart, Clare and the team as well as connecting and collaborating with other esteemed members for the greater good of the region.

“Over the coming years we are targeting growth in volume and an expansion of our tour operating model. We see ferry travel as an

opportunity for travellers to spend more time in the area they arrive or depart the UK from.

“Using the attractions of the local area is a key motivator to choose the South West either as a stop before heading to France or Spain or a holiday for our French and Spanish customers.”

Patrons of the Chamber are some of the best-known and respected names in the business community. They are woven into the Chamber’s extensive lobbying activities and become one of our region’s principal voices.

Chamber Chief Executive Stuart Elford said: “Brittany Ferries is an internationally renowned company and a hugely successful brand, so we could not be more delighted that they have decided to become a Patron of the Chamber.

“Brittany Ferries continues to play a significant role here in the South West, handling some 400,000 passengers and 150,000 vehicles per year, as well as 80,000 tonnes of cargo, contributing over £95 million to the UK economy.

“Our Patrons play a unique role in developing the future of our region and the Chamber is far stronger with Brittany Ferries’ support and Patronage.”

DEVON CHAMBER PATRONAGE COMPLETES AN AMAZING YEAR FOR SOUTH DEVON COLLEGE

It has been an incredible few months here at the Devon Chamber of Commerce, following the merger of the Devon & Plymouth and Exeter Chambers uniting to create one new umbrella business organisation.

Now, our Chamber Family has become even stronger by the news that South Devon College has stepped up to become a Patron of the Chamber.

The Patronage was officially unveiled during our December County Conversations event, which was hosted by the College.

South Devon College has been at the heart of the Torbay community since its early days as Torquay Tech, and has seen substantial changes, growth and investment over the

years, establishing it as one of the top Further Education Colleges in England.

With a mission to ‘inspire our community through learning’, the College and University Centre offers a wide-ranging curriculum within its state-of-the-art industry-standard facilities, plus training and personalised short courses, often fully funded, to rectify the skills shortage in local growth sectors.

Mirroring the exciting developments for our own organisation over the last 12 months, 2024 has also been a year of achievements for South Devon College.

In June, the College was awarded the highest possible rating of ‘Strong’ for Skills by Ofsted (in addition to an ‘outstanding’ rating for education programmes for young people). This demonstrates that the College is actively meeting local skills needs with its responsive and collaborative approach to curriculum design. Businesses can take advantage of the world-class training facilities right here in Torbay to upskill their workforce to keep at the forefront of sector advances.

It has been an exceptionally busy year, and the College is delighted to unveil several cutting-edge facilities that are now or will soon be available for training your employees.

Marine Bridge Simulator at South Devon College Marine Academy

The College’s Vessel Simulation Suite at Noss Marina features an advanced REMBRANDT ship simulator, offering accredited and bespoke training in vessel navigation and handling to address future marine industry needs. Local employers can test the facilities in the New Year, with commercial courses starting in spring.

Cyber Security

With Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF) support, the College is launching a Cyber Resilience Simulation Suite to help businesses tackle cyber threats. Organisations can safely simulate attacks and test response strategies, including scenarios like malware, hacking, and phishing. Specialist training for all sectors begins January 2025, including short courses, hands-on sessions, and online options.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Training

LSIF funding has enabled investment in electric vehicle diagnostic equipment to train professionals in high-demand EV technologies. Courses cover high-voltage systems, battery management, and repairs, with some leading to IMI professional registration. Training is designed for technicians, engineers, and first responders.

Green Skills and Energy Centre

The College, named Sustainability Institution of the Year, has secured £1.5 million to expand its South West Energy Centre (SWEC).

Opening by March 2025, the centre will focus on green skills and energy technologies, including heat pumps and EV charger installation, using state-of-the-art equipment and curricula.

UK Shared Prosperity Fund

South Devon College is using Torbay’s £1.76 million UK Shared Prosperity Fund to provide free training in key growth industries such as EV technology, solar skills, healthcare, tourism, and digital. These courses aim to upskill the local workforce and support career progression.

Laurence Frewin, Principal and CEO of South Devon College, said: “It’s been an incredibly busy year of investment and growth here at the College, and we are constantly expanding our provisions and upgrading our facilities aligned with local skills needs.

“All these College facilities, including new courses in development, are accessible to local businesses for staff training, leading to business growth and a highly skilled local workforce.

“We are very keen to expand our Devon Chamber collaboration and work closely with the team and local employers to ensure businesses and residents are equipped with vital skills for the future.”

Chamber Chief Executive Stuart Elford added: “We are thrilled to welcome South Devon College as a Patron of the Devon Chamber of Commerce. Their commitment to fostering skills development and economic growth aligns perfectly with our mission to

support businesses and communities across Devon.

“The College’s investment in cutting-edge facilities and its focus on addressing local skills shortages demonstrates a proactive approach to meeting the needs of our region. By becoming a Patron, South Devon College strengthens its role as a cornerstone of the Torbay community and a key driver of innovation and opportunity across the county.

“This partnership exemplifies the collaborative spirit we aim to cultivate within our Chamber Family, and we look forward to working together to support businesses in navigating future challenges and opportunities.”

We’ve all been there as business leaders, looking at stacks of ever-growing data, sometimes years’ worth, knowing it’s valuable and can tell us lots about our business, but not knowing where to start to make it meaningful.

Data is the backbone of business. A precious and often untapped resource. Making data-driven decisions and using it to inform strategy can give you a competitive edge. Using data to create automated systems can save money, time and ultimately increase profits. Whether that’s automating manual repeat tasks such as invoice checking, creating real-time internal dashboards and reports, or speeding up data analysis like identifying customer trends and buying habits.

Our friends at Data Cubed believe you should be able to check your business performance like you’d check the weather, enabling informed decision making using real-time insights. We agree.

Working as a consultancy team, Optimising IT and Data Cubed experts will transform

“Perhaps your data is disconnected or disorganised; messy or inconsistent. Trying to make sense of it manually not only eats time but it’s hard to be sure how accurate it is.”

Businesses today need more than just IT support; they need partners who can help them transform and adapt in real-time. Through this partnership with Data Cubed, we are enabling our customers with the tools to derive actionable insights, automate processes, and thrive in a data-centric world. We believe this partnership will create significant opportunities for businesses across the UK to embrace datadriven change.

Perhaps your data is disconnected or disorganised; messy or inconsistent. Trying to make sense of it manually not only eats time but it’s hard to be sure how accurate it is. Plus, it would take endless tea to fuel the lucky person tasked with sorting it out. Even when data is organised, AI-powered data systems and automation can deliver business intelligence and insights that far surpass what we could hope to identify if we tried to analyse it manually.

We know AI is rapidly advancing businesses capabilities and data is a key area where AI can power business growth. Put simply; to continue to stay competitive as a business in 2024 and beyond, you need to be looking at data and AI.

Optimising IT has recently partnered with Data Cubed, a brilliant bunch of innovators in data, automation and artificial intelligence. Together we now offer data consultancy services for businesses. Specifically, to enable businesses to use the power of AI and automation in data management.

your data management, making sense of existing and historical data and building AI powered systems to draw insights from and report in real time on incoming data. We design tailored and completely flexible systems and solutions aligned to your specific business goals.

Our experts know data management inside out. From modelling and automation to security and governance. Bring your disconnected data and we will bring our expertise.

We can set up systems to drive intelligence and data automation for your business. This could be anything from internal reports and dashboards to client reporting and analytics, forecasts and predictive models, to customer segmentation.

Creative ultra-efficient systems using the latest in AI and automation can get data processes running like clockwork, meaning you can unlock the full capability and potential of your data.

We can help you:

• Turn complex data into meaningful intelligence to support faster, datadriven decision-making.

• Use automation and AI to streamline workflows and enhance productivity.

• Use predictive analytics to anticipate and meet client needs proactively.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT FOR BUSINESSES: A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH

In today’s rapidly evolving energy landscape, businesses face the dual challenge of managing costs and reducing their carbon footprint.

At BCR Associates, we offer a suite of services designed to help organisations navigate these complexities, make informed decisions, and achieve their energy management goals.

Our comprehensive solutions not only optimise energy consumption but also align with Net Zero objectives, ensuring a sustainable future.

1. Energy Audits and Consultancy

Understanding where and how energy is used within a business is the first step towards optimization. Our energy audits and consultancy services provide expert insights into current energy usage patterns. By identifying inefficiencies and areas for improvement, we help businesses implement strategies that reduce consumption and costs. This proactive approach ensures that energy management becomes an integral part of the business strategy.

2. Market Intel and Tracking

Staying informed about market trends, pricing, and energy-related developments is crucial for making strategic decisions. Our market intelligence and tracking services offer

real-time data that empowers businesses to respond swiftly to changes in the energy market. This service helps in forecasting energy needs, budgeting accurately, and taking advantage of favourable market conditions.

3. Metering and Data Collection

Accurate data collection is the backbone of effective energy management. We provide advanced metering solutions that monitor energy consumption at both site and machine levels.

This granular data helps in identifying patterns, pinpointing inefficiencies, and making informed decisions about where to focus energy-saving efforts.

4. Analytics and Reporting

5. Compliance (SECR/ESOS)

Navigating the regulatory landscape can be daunting, but compliance is nonnegotiable. We guide businesses through the requirements of SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting) and ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme), ensuring that all reporting obligations are met. Our expertise in these areas not only helps in avoiding penalties but also positions businesses as responsible and forward-thinking.

6. Procurement

Energy procurement is more than just buying energy; it’s about managing risk and optimizing costs. Our tailored procurement solutions help businesses secure the best energy contracts and negotiate favourable terms. By understanding the unique needs of each business, we ensure that procurement strategies are aligned with overall energy management goals.

7. Energy Efficiency

Implementing energy-saving measures is a direct way to reduce consumption and costs. From lighting upgrades to HVAC improvements, our energy efficiency services cover a wide range of solutions. These measures not only lower energy bills but also contribute to a more sustainable operation, enhancing the business’s environmental credentials.

Data alone is not enough; it needs to be analysed and presented in a way that drives action. Our analytics and reporting services transform raw data into actionable insights. Regular reports track progress, highlight opportunities for further savings, and ensure that energy management initiatives are on track. This continuous feedback loop is essential for maintaining momentum and achieving long-term goals.

8. Onsite Generation

Exploring renewable energy options for onsite generation is a significant step towards sustainability. We help businesses assess the feasibility of technologies like solar PV and wind power, providing solutions that reduce reliance on grid energy and lower carbon emissions. Onsite generation not only supports sustainability goals but also offers long-term financial benefits.

LABOUR’S EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS BILL: WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU?

On 10th October 2024, Labour’s Employment Rights Bill was announced. This Bill looks to reform 28 individual areas of UK employment law and has (rightly) generated a lot of media attention.

The Bill was created in view of the government’s pro-worker and pro-business approach and aims to strike a balance between providing greater protection for workers, but also clarification for employers on employment law provisions in the workplace.

Some key changes include:

Unfair dismissal

Under current UK law, an employee is required to have two full years of service to bring an unfair dismissal claim against their employer. However, clause 19 of the Bill looks to provide this as a day-one right.

The government also states their intention to ensure employers can use probationary periods to assess the suitability of new hires. There have been suggestions of probationary periods extending from six to nine months and employers being able to operate a light-touch approach to unfair dismissal regulations during this time.

Firing and re-hiring

The Bill aims to end unscrupulous practices, such as firing and re-hiring. Clause 22 will make it automatically unfair to dismiss an employee for refusing to vary the terms of their contract. There is some scope for exceptions, which are largely around an employer being in financial difficulties and this would need to be evidenced.

Zero-hour contracts

Clauses 1-6 of the Bill provide reform on the use of zero-hour contracts. This includes the rights for employees:

• To be given ‘guaranteed hours’ which reflect the number of hours they have worked over a period of time. The current reference period in discussion is a twelveweek period.

• To be given reasonable notice of a shift, to help workers achieve greater certainty of when they will be working.

To have reasonable notice of cancellation of a shift.

If an employer is found to be in breach of any of the above, they will be liable to pay compensation.

Flexible working requests

Whilst current law enables employees to make flexible working requests on two occasions every year, Labour’s Employment Rights Bill makes this a day-one right. If refused, employers are required to explain why they believe it to be reasonable.

Leave

The Bill looks to implement changes to various statutory leave:

• Bereavement leave – employees will be entitled to one week of bereavement leave. Currently there is only a right to parental bereavement leave, however it is yet to be clarified what relationships the new rights will apply to.

• Parental and paternity leave– will become day one rights.

• Maternity leave – greater protection will be given to pregnant women or those on, or returning from, extended family leave in a redundancy situation.

Statutory sick pay

The Bill will look to make Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) a day-one right, as opposed to being available from day four of illness.

The lower earnings limit will be removed so that SSP is available to all employees. How much they will be entitled to will be determined by a set reference (which is yet be announced).

When will Labour’s Employment Rights Bill come into force?

Whilst the extensive reforms have been announced, changes will not take immediate effect. Consultations with various professional bodies (such as ACAS, trade unions and employment law practitioners) are expected in early 2025. The Bill will also be debated in both Houses of Parliament. It is therefore predicted that it will come into law around the summer of 2025 at the earliest. It’s also likely that, following the consultations, they will slightly differ to how they are currently proposed.

If you are an employer and need assistance navigating these changes, or any other area of employment law, then call GA’s specialist employment team today on 01752 203500. You can also email enquiries@GAsolicitors.com.

GREEN SKILLS ADVISORY PANEL IS DRIVING GREEN SKILLS FORWARD

The Green Construction Advisory Panel (GCAP), initially launched by Exeter College in January 2022 as a South West initiative and expanded nationally earlier this year, is broadening its mission to tackle the UK’s green skills gap more comprehensively.

The newly re-named Green Skills Advisory Panel (GSAP), supported by The British Association of Construction Heads (BACH), amongst others, is on a mission to accelerate green skills in the UK across the full spectrum of industries and occupations it impacts.

“This initiative promises to bridge the skills gap, promote green careers, and foster collaboration between industry, education, and government. I look forward to the positive impact it will have on our workforce and the environment.”

Since it was first established by Exeter

to build a clear picture of the green skills landscape in their areas and collectively work towards action-based outcomes.

GSAP’s work on an international stage is also gaining momentum as Exeter College recently welcomed guest Colleges and a member of Government from Malawi as GSAP broadens its wings overseas.

The GSAP ambition is to establish a UK-wide framework to upskill the current workforce, and educate new entrants, to adopt emerging technologies, consider the environmental impact and identify how industries can help meet net zero targets.

A 10-strong GSAP National Partnership Board has now been appointed, chaired by Former Minister of State for Skills, Apprenticeships and Higher Education Robert Halfon and Executive Director of Future Skills and Apprenticeships at Exeter College, Mike Blakeley.

Robert commented: “This initiative marks a significant step forward in addressing the green skills gap in the UK’s construction and wider industries.

“The National Partnership Board will drive GSAP’s strategic direction, aiming to create a UK-wide framework for green skills training and development. This aligns perfectly with our national goals for Net Zero and addresses crucial social mobility and economic needs.

“As a former Minister for Skills, Apprenticeships and Higher Education, I’m particularly excited about GSAP’s potential to transform our approach to sustainable construction and skills development.

College in 2022, GSAP has grown to nineteen Centres across the UK, expertly guided by Further Education Colleges. GSAP exists to encourage, improve and develop education and training opportunities for the sustainable housing, green construction, engineering and manufacturing industries. Its purpose is to close the skills gap and provide entry routes into green related careers.

The GSAP ambition is to establish a UK-wide framework to upskill the current workforce, and educate new entrants, to adopt emerging technologies, consider the environmental impact and identify how industries can help meet net zero targets.

GSAP Centres bring together key stakeholders in their regions including training providers (of which 30 have already committed), employers, construction firms, manufacturers, local authorities, builders merchants and charities, to identify key opportunities and collaboratively create entry pathways into green careers. They are able

The aim of this partnership is to develop the GSAP model in Malawi and soon, Nepal, to encourage partnerships to improve curriculum that meets the needs of local employers.

This follows a recent trip to Malawi by Executive Director of Apprenticeships and Partnerships for Exeter College, Mike Blakeley to understand how GSAP, through the British Council, can support Colleges at Government level to develop a Green Policy which will outline the country’s plans to respond to the growing need for green skills.

As an action led group, GSAP absorbs industry challenges and proactively responds through innovative solutions.

KIA’S COMPACT SUV IS SIMPLY ELECTRIC!

Devon Chamber CEO Stuart Elford drives the new Kia EV3 GT Line

Sportage) and for months I had seen teaser ads heralding the launch of their compact SUV, the all-electric EV3.

It looked intriguing and so I was eager to see and try the car for myself.

When I turned up at Speedwell Kia in Exeter, I was welcomed by Richard Bates who had the car prepped and ready for me to drive away. As we approached the car it unlocked automatically, and the flush door handles popped out.

We sat in the cabin, which was spacious and with a premium feel that utilises vegan leather and recycled materials, while Richard ran

already been driving for several hours that day, so I was tired and was also running late for the PABC dinner in Plymouth. My phone connected to Apple Car Play in just a few seconds, and Google Maps popped up on the huge 12.3 inch centre touchscreen while the phone lay on the wireless charger below.

I twisted the stalk on the side of the steering wheel to D and was off. I was on the A38 in just a few minutes and heading west. Despite the torrential rain it was incredibly quiet and a very relaxing place to be, with customisable ambient lighting and an excellent six-speaker sound system (you can opt for an eight-

for them all. In fact, at one point a cup of tea symbol popped up! Sadly, it wasn’t offering to make me one, but warning me to take a break, sensing my tiredness! Arriving safely in Plymouth the car was easy to park outside my house with its crystal-clear rear-view camera.

The next morning I drove the car to the office for a photoshoot and a proper look around in the light. The first thing I thought was that the car looks modern and stylish, rugged, purposeful and angular, but not boxy. Unlike some new cars it is individual and unique without being garish. I like it very much.

There is plenty of room in the nearly 500-litre boot and although I wasn’t allowed to carry my dog Charlie in it, the flat loading boot (which you can lower for more storage) was ideal for the Chamber Wellbeing Officer.

Inside, I am pleased that the car has three excellent flat screens, merged into one long strip, rather than the centre iPad-like display favoured by some. I like a proper ‘cockpit’ with designated zones rather than fiddling through layers of options on a central screen.

There is the infotainment system in the middle of the dash, a driver information screen in front of you and the air-conditioning system between them. But there are also

With 201 bhp taking the Kia from 0-62 mph in just 7.7 secs, the car has a lot of punch, even at the top end, making overtaking a breeze. The front-wheel drive is very balanced and surefooted, with just a hint of understeer when pushed hard under acceleration. If you need faster or better handling, may I suggest you buy a four wheel drive sports car rather than this very capable SUV!

The regenerative braking can be adjusted from paddles on the steering wheel, which once you get used to, means you can drive largely with one pedal and make the most of the claimed 347-mile range.

Pushing hard and using all the heating, lighting and other systems will obviously shorten that, but it is still an impressive range that will be more than adequate for most.

simple manual switches for the main functions. Everything is very ergonomic, stylish and well thought out, such as charging sockets in the back of the front seats so the kids can charge their devices too.

Taking to the road in the light and the dry I was able to test the performance and handling.

Although this car is fun to drive and can be pushed, it is also very quiet and comfortable just pottering around, as well as being practical and easy to live with. When you also add the industryleading seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty to it, the EV3 makes a LOT of sense.

In short, I think Kia have managed to make

the EV3 be almost all things to all people but without compromising; I can honestly say I was very impressed and for once really did not want to give the car back after my weekend with it. When I dropped the car back to Richard at Speedwell he had to practically wrestle the keys from my hand.

When it is time to change my aging Sportage, I can honestly say this one is currently top of the list and will take some beating. Well played Kia!

What do you do and why do you enjoy it?

I joined Exeter Chamber two and a half years ago as CEO after exiting Coastal Recycling Limited, where I was a shareholder and board director. I’m proud to have instigated and been part of a board team that oversaw the sale of the business to an employee ownership trust, ensuring it is now run for the benefit of its staff.

As CEO of Exeter Chamber, and now Deputy CEO of the newly-formed Devon Chamber, I’m incredibly proud to represent and champion the interests of our fantastic members while supporting the teams at the Chamber. I love my job because it gives me the chance to meet an extraordinary variety of people, businesses, and organisations. Each one is doing something brilliant to benefit our region, county, economy, and community.”

Name: Richard Marsh

Role: CEO of Exeter Chamber and Deputy CEO of the Devon Chamber

What drives you?

A determination to do my best.

Where do you see the future of your organisation?

I see our recent merger and subsequent creation of the new Devon Chamber as the start of a journey. We have brought two powerhouse cities and the membership of two brilliant chambers together to do the very best we can do for our members. We have a huge amount to offer and I see the opportunity now to roll this out across all parts of the county and who knows beyond.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Be yourself.

If you could sum up your CV in one word, it would be...

An ongoing journey not without a few bumps in the road.

When it comes to business, do you follow head or heart?

Starts with heart, finishes with head.

Describe yourself in five words

Happy, Interested, Optimistic, Creative, Caring (I wanted to put Hungry, because I’m on a diet!).

How do you balance life and work?

I love the great outdoors and walking the South West Coast Path. Inspired by my wife, we are two days off completing all 600-plus miles. I love the mountains and skiing, any travel and any sport.

What’s your favourite quote?

It’s more of a marketing mantra: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.

Who has been the greatest influence on you?

My first proper boss, the late Robin Hall. He gave me my first opportunity at RH Advertising, where I eventually became an owner through a management buyout. Robin taught me invaluable lessons: to always stay curious, to never stop asking questions, and to truly understand and empathise with the perspective of the person you’re speaking to. His wisdom continues to guide me in both my professional and personal life.

What are you most proud of?

My family will always be first, closely followed by what we achieved at Coastal and what we are about to achieve at the new Devon Chamber.
