Patients rate their overall experience of Derriford’s Emergency Department as ‘good’, a national survey has revealed. In a survey by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust’s Emergency Department (referred to as Accident & Emergency in this survey) has scored well, with over eight out of ten patients feeling they had an overall ‘good experience’. In particular, of the 387 responses the CQC received regarding Derriford Hospital (a 31% response rate), an average nine out of ten patients (or higher) felt that the doctor or nurse listened to what they had to say; that the doctor or nurse was sensitive to their feelings; and that they had confidence and trust in the doctors and nurses examining and treating them. In comparison to the other 136 NHS Trusts across England, Derriford Hospital scored well on most questions, but in particular the Trust was rated 5th highest for the provision of information about potential medication side effects when patients were discharged. Greg Dix, chief nurse and operating officer, said: “It’s really important that our patients feel they have been made fully aware of

important symptoms to look out for, when they are discharged. “According to the CQC report, just over half of people across the UK feel they aren’t getting enough information. But here at Derriford, it’s clear that our patients feel that they are leaving the Emergency Department well informed”. Jayne Glynn, patient experience manager, added: “The results show that we compare favourably with other Emergency Departments. This translates into better care for our patients, which is what we are striving to achieve. “The survey correlates with recent results from the Friends and Family test, where 95% of those surveyed said they would recommend the Emergency Department to friends or family needing emergency treatment. “Demand for our services has increased dramatically this year, yet the patients are still rating us well. This is clearly a tribute to the hard work of all our staff under often challenging circumstances.”

Plymouth MP’s ‘harrowing visit’ to meet child refugees in Calais these children, who have family in the UK, must wait months and months to be reunited with their relatives.”

One of Plymouth’s three MP’s, Luke Pollard recently made the journey to Calais to visit child refugees with the nonprofit organisation, Safe Passage UK.

There has been much criticism for the abandonment of a scheme set up by Lord ‘Alf’ Dubs, himself a refugee, who had fled to the UK from Czechoslovakia, from the Nazis when he was six years old. Under the Dubs Scheme Britain had planned to take in 3000 child refugees, but to date far fewer children have been accepted.

Luke made this trip to see for himself the situation unaccompanied children are living in just hours away from Plymouth and to better understand how the British and French governments can better help these vulnerable children fleeing war and conflict. Safe Passage is an organisation that helps unaccompanied children and vulnerable adults access safe and legal routes to asylum. So far, their work has helped 1,150 refugee children arrive safely and legally into the UK, and given 200 unaccompanied refugee children sanctuary in the UK. The trip was organised with the help of local woman, Faraday Fearnside who runs the not for profit organisation Open Hearts Open Borders, as a cross-party visit. Luke and the Labour MP Andy Slaughter, travelled alongside Conservative MP, Henry Smith. On the trip, taking place less than a year after the demolition of the ‘Jungle’ camp, Luke visited areas where refugees are given food and the warehouses where donations are distributed to the refugee community. Luke listened to the people working with the unaccompanied

Last month following the trip, Luke spoke in the House of Commons for an urgent debate on what can be done to speed up the process for the child refugees sleeping rough in Calais, to be reunited with their families in Britain. Luke Pollard MP and Faraday Fearnside in Calais

child refugees to understand why it takes up to eight months for children, some as young as eight years old, to get their cases properly dealt with by the UK and French authorities. Faraday Fearnside explained: “Their situation is such a desperate one. These children are incredibly vulnerable, and are being left to fend for themselves, living in bushes and under trees, being tear gassed by French authorities - I have seen for myself how unsafe it is for them in Calais and have witnessed how they are living - it is simply wrong and totally unjustifiable in our society today.

Luke said: “I expected a harrowing day but there are some things that you can’t prepare yourself for. These children are susceptible to trafficking and smugglers - no child should be ever left in such physically and emotionally harmful circumstances. I am deeply disturbed by the desperate conditions I have seen children, unaccompanied, as young as eight years old sleeping rough in Calais, who are trying to reach their family in the UK. “It is a disgrace that is it quicker to get to Calais from Westminster than it is to get from Plymouth from Westminster and yet

A parliamentary debate is to be held to mark the anniversary of the destruction of the Jungle Camp in Calais, and Safe Passage are holding a day of action outside parliament. Local people are encouraged to write to their MP to show their support for these children; and Safe Passage are asking schools and communities to join the organisation in writing letters to the children, showing their support for their right to be reunited with their families in Britain. Age UK Plymouth boosted by donation from the Santander Foundation Age UK Plymouth has received £4680 to fund Memory Lane sessions for people with memory loss or dementia at it’s Active Ageing centre in Plymstock. The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation, which offers Discovery Grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities. Age UK Plymouth provides a wide range of services for people over the age of 50, older carers and carers of older people. The Charity offers support, advice and social engagement opportunities to help people maintain their independence, health and wellbeing.

The grant will support weekly ‘Memory Lane’ sessions where people with memory loss can come along to enjoy music, singing, activities and reminiscing. The sessions will also provide carers with the opportunity to meet with others in the same situation to both socialise and gain information to help them in their caring roles. Lynne Hodgson, fundraising and marketing manager at Age UK Plymouth said: “ We have an ageing population and we are seeing more older people needing support to help them remain independent for longer. The grant from Santander will allow us to provide a much needed service for those people with memory loss or dementia. The Memory Lane sessions will be fun, meaningful and interactive and will give everyone, including carers,

the opportunity to meet new people and socially engage.” Elaine Bleazard, branch manager at Santander’s Plymouth city centre branch. said: “The Santander Foundation makes hundreds of donations every year to good

causes throughout the UK. “We are committed to playing a key part in the community and we are delighted to be supporting Age UK Plymouth and hope the donation makes a real difference to local people.”

Exhibition of patchwork and quilting to raise funds for the Highbury Trust An exhibition of patchwork and quilting is taking place in Plymouth in November to raise funds for Plymouth Highbury Trust. Ladies from the Sound Stitchers and Sew-cial Quilters will display their work at the event at Abbey Hall in Catherine Street, Plymouth, behind St Andrew’s Church on Saturday November 11 from 10am to 4pm. The event is being opened by BBC personality Judy Spiers, who is Highbury Trust’s President. Entrance is just £2 and there will be trade stands and refreshments available. Profits from the exhibition will go towards Highbury Trust’s fundraising to purchase a new mini bus to transport service users. So far about 50% of the £24,000 needed has been raised. Highbury Trust general manager Martin Newman said: “We really appreciate the ladies of the quilting group fund raising for us. “Their support will help us buy a much needed new mini bus to replace an ageing, increasingly unreliable vehicle. He added: “It is vital that our vehicles are 100% reliable as they are in use every day around the city.” The Plymouth Shopper

Giving Back time A popular Plymouth eatery is opening its doors in December for a Giving Back Day.

Sally Baum, from Jolly Jacks in Mayflower Marina said: “Some of us are very fortunate...we have friends and loving families to share our lives with, but what about those who have lost those precious bonds and no longer have that loving support any more. “Unfortunately gone are the days when neighbours know each other, local post offices are closing, corner shops are fewer, and those connections are no more. “It’s time to reconnect with those less fortunate, to forge new friendships, have neighbours that can pop in to

check, especially if you have an elderly neighbour.

“At Jolly Jacks we do care and wish to help to do something about it. On December 6 we are having a Giving Back afternoon but we need you to contact us if you know of such people who could benefit from making new friendships and to bring light back into their lives. “The elderly are particularly vulnerable yet have their pride at the same time. But they are such amazing people with stories and experiences to share and we want to help by finding friends you can share them with.” Please contact Sally or speak to any of the team at Jolly Jacks for more information on 01752 500008.

Drakes Diamond Gala raises over £15,000 for St Luke’s Local jewellers Drakes raised a massive total of £15,600 for St Luke’s Hospice at their third Diamond Gala Ball at the Crowne Plaza, Plymouth. Over 330 guests attended and enjoyed a wonderful evening at the glitzy ball hosted by BBC personality David Fitzgerald, with the theme for the evening being kept top secret right until the doors opened on the night. Guests entered a gold-themed ballroom, adorned with hanging globe candles, orchids and beautiful candelabras, and were welcomed by the incredible Ambassador Band from London, who had guests on the dance floor before the introductions even began. Guests enjoyed canapés, a delicious two course meal and were invited to take part in the Stand for a Grand Competition, where lucky winner Carole Roberts won an incredible £1,000 in cash to take home.

which generously donated many fantastic prizes for the prestigious charity ball.

Prizes included a Vispring Bed worth up to £5,000, an evening at home with local chef Ben Palmer where he would cook a meal for eight people and a BMW i8 for the weekend, which Ocean BMW kindly agreed to donate three times over when three guests were relentlessly trying to outbid each other. Drakes were also delighted to be offered two spontaneous prizes on the night to auction including two sets of Manchester United executive tickets to a game of their choice to the highest bidders. The family run jewellers were thrilled to welcome back the incredibly popular 10-piece London group, Ambassador Band, who had the dance floor filled all night long!

On the night guests were also invited to take part in a charity raffle and a live and silent auction where some incredible prizes were on offer.

Monique Hirshman, Drakes director and organiser of the Drakes Diamond Gala said: “I am absolutely thrilled that we have raised such a fantastic amount for St Luke’s Hospice and it’s amazing that an event enjoyed by so few can benefit so many!

Drakes were very grateful to the many local businesses

“This is a cause very close to all of our hearts and we

hope this money will go a long way in supporting the incredible work they carry out within our local community. Everyone had such a wonderful evening and I am completely overwhelmed by the lovely comments from our guests! Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it a night to remember. It was the third Gala Ball that Drakes have hosted in support of St Luke’s Hospice, and together with a past jewellery recycling scheme have raised in excess of £61,000! St Luke’s provide specialist advice and support to people with progressive life-limiting illnesses in

Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall. Penny Hannah, head of fundraising at St Luke’s Hospice said: “What a team Drakes Jewellers are – so committed, professional and fun. We would like to thank each and every one of you! “The Hirshman family are total gems, Monique is so committed to helping St Luke’s create more local care, how wonderful that one family can help so many more local families, thank you! The families that are experiencing much sadness at this time will benefit from your kindness, they will know your family has a diamond heart.”

It’s the Hoe, Hoe, Hoe Sketch show! Tickets are now on sale for ‘Hoe, Hoe, Hoe,it’s the Sketch Show’, the latest offering from The Playwriters Production Company. Taking place in the Playwriters mini-theatre which is upstairs above The Noah’s Ark pub in Courtney St,(behind WH Smith) in Plymouth City Centre, performances are on October 25, 26, and 27, all at 7.30pm with a matinee on the October 28 at 2.30pm. Leading professional actor, Mark Allan Pilgrim, enjoying his third production with The Playwriters, reckons this is the ideal half-term show. “Every sketch is set on Plymouth Hoe”, he said,”there are 10 of them, and each has just two or three people performing. It’s the dialogue that makes you go Hoe, Hoe, Hoe!” With just six sat, one backstage crew (more volunteers urgently needed), its hard work, but director, Mike Ford, has a trick up his sleeve. “The audience are actually part of this production. It’s designed as a radio show being done live in front of a studio audience – so all who come to see it actually help us just by being there!” Tickets are £5 if pre-booked on 01752 786 777 or £7 on the door. Only 45 seats each Show, so pre-booking is advised.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the Quiz Night with Fish and Chip Supper due to take place on Saturday November 11, has had to be cancelled. Apologies to all concerned. The popular Autumn Bird Walk tasks place on November 18, giving participants the opportunity to see a variety of over wintering birds, such as the red wing and field fare, which visit the cemetery to feed on an abundance of holly berries. There will also be opportunities to see some resident species, such as blue tits, coal tit, chaffinch, goldfinch and even catch a glimpse of the buzzard as it soars high above the cemetery - and not forgetting the resident raven as it calls from the top of the highest fir tree. The walk starts at 10am. Meet at the Visitor Centre.

Bumper harvest of donations is boost for Plymouth Foodbank Shakespeare Primary School in Honicknowle gathered around a bumper ‘harvest’ of donations to celebrate the colours of harvest.

Katie from the Foodbank thanked the children for their donations, which will go to help those in need. Reverend Andy Bowden led the school in prayer, giving thanks for the food we receive.

A mountain of food, ready for collection by the Foodbank Plymouth, formed the centrepiece of the wonderful assembly. During the assembly, that was also attended by school Governors, parents and friends of Shakespeare, they heard wonderful performances of poetry reading and singing. The youngest members of the school took the audience on a ‘Leaf Hunt’ while the older children sang the colours of harvest. The celebration ended with a school harvest tradition - the singing of Big Red Combine Harvester - a firm favourite with all the children and staff.

Soroptimists raise £3,000 for women and girls in Nepal Women and girls in Nepal, some of whom have been victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, have received support from Plymouth Soroptimists for the last three years.

Soroptimists, explaining how the donations have been used to help women set up goat farms to provide them with a regular income so they can send their children to school. Girls have been able to access education because they have been given school uniforms, books, stationery and personal hygiene items.

Local ladies have raised £3,000 which has been donated to the Kopila Nepal project which helps girls’ access education, enables women to develop a sustainable livelihood and helps those with mental health issues get the treatment they need.

Plymouth Soroptimist President Margaret Parkinson said: “We were delighted to learn that because of the support of Plymouth Soroptimists and the Kopila project, there has been a significant reduction in mental health issues and discrimination suffered by these women and girls. It has been rewarding to know that our fund raising efforts have made such an impact and produced such positive results.”

Brownies mark International Day of the Girl

Brownies across Plymouth made friendship bracelets and pillow-slip dresses to mark International Day of the Girl which falls on October 11 each year. The friendship bracelets and dresses are Christmas gifts for girls in the Gambian village of Bissary which is one of the projects Plymouth Soroptimists support. Sue Miller, the link between the Brownies and Plymouth Soroptimists, said: “ This is the third year running that these lovely young girls and their leaders have worked with us to help others less fortunate than themselves and we’d like to give them a big thank you. “Working with the Brownies on this project is a great way to commemorate International Day of the Girl which highlights the needs and challenges girls face all over the world.”

Residents views are sought on proposals to relieve notorious traffic bottleneck Residents are being asked to share their views on proposals to tackle one of Plymouth’s worst traffic bottlenecks.

The Woolwell to The George Scheme aims to alleviate congestion at the notorious pinch point on the A386 Tavistock Road and support proposed new developments in the north of the city. This stretch of road is used by more than 30,000 vehicles during the day and there are often queues and delays at peak times, caused by traffic having to merge over very short distances. Two options are being proposed – both of which would see the road widened between Woolwell Roundabout and The George to provide two lanes in each direction, removing the need to merge and reducing journey times for everyone. Both also include improved public transport, walking and cycling links. The main difference between the two options is that one would change the roundabout to a signalised junction, while the other would keep the roundabout but signalise one arm. There are a number of possible variations to this that are open to feedback. Councillor Patrick Nicholson, deputy leader and cabinet member for strategic transport, housing and planning, said: “This council has made it a priority to tackle traffic bottlenecks and help keep Plymouth moving. Anyone who travels along this stretch of Tavistock Road will know it’s a well-known hotspot for traffic hold-ups. “Congestion is only going to increase

as the city grows and we have to deliver improvements on key routes if we are to accommodate new developments and the additional traffic they will generate. We want people to comment on these possible scheme options so that they can feed into the next stage of design.” The consultation finishes on November 10 and three public consultation events have been arranged where council officers will be available to discuss the proposals and hear any thoughts from local residents. They are on October 25 between 9.30am and 12.30pm, November 1 from 1pm to 5pm and November 4 from 3pm to 5pm all at the Woolwell Centre, DarkLake Lane, Woolwell. More details on the scheme and the consultation can be found here - www. plymouth.gov.uk/woolwellgeorgejunction The council is aiming to have a design for the preferred option by early 2018. The Plymouth and South West Devon Joint Local Plan identifies Derriford and the northern corridor as one of three strategic growth areas where most of the planned growth in the city will take place through to 2034. The vision is to transform this area into a high quality, distinctive, vibrant, mixed-use new heart for Plymouth. The Woolwell to The George project is the flagship transport infrastructure project for the north of the city and will be part of a masterplan of highway improvements that will help to deliver jobs and homes in this area. It will complement other local schemes including the Derriford Transport Scheme, due for completion next year and the Forder Valley Link Road, also currently in the planning stages.

The equipment was funded by the councillors from their community grants. A38 Resurfacing The Compton councillors campaigned for several years to find ways to reduce the road noise of the A38 Parkway which adversely affects residents in the Compton Ward from Hartley Vale to Donnington Drive reaching unhealthy levels at peak times. Plympton hi-tech firm gives city MP lowdown on £500,000 order Plymouth-based Artemis Optical, leaders in the design and manufacture of bespoke optical thin film coatings, hosted a visit by MP Johnny Mercer in the same week they announced a £500,000 deal with a top European electronics firm to provide head-up displays (HUDs) for military aircraft. Mr Mercer saw at first hand Artemis’ capabilities and some of the enabling technologies which it supplies into defence and aerospace applications.

Phil Loft...unique barbering service

Phil takes barbering to new heights! Phil Loft is the owner/manager of the aptly named Barberloft supplying fine hairdressing services to discerning clientele. His unique salon is situated in a c1820 townhouse in Stoke, built originally for naval officers and part of a family home. He has decorated it in a style fitting a gentleman’s club in the capital, which is where he learnt his barbering skills some 17 years ago. Phil is of Maltese origin, although he grew up in Hull, so he has a healthy dose of Yorkshire, as well as a love of living close to the sea. His appointment-only service means that there is no waiting around. Clients can enjoy a stress free time in Phil’s company, he can incorporate a facial massage into his hot towel shave, that will help even the most uptight forget about the cares of the world. He also offers a luxury hot towel head shave, which sounds like an experience not to be missed –

almost worth going bald for!

With Phil’s experience of working in London, he is experienced in all kinds of modern cutting, - fades, long hair styles and beard shaping, and he enjoys creating traditional styles too. Although he has only recently started, his Facebook and Google sites are already attracting top reviews. One customer wrote, ‘a really relaxing experience with great coffee in a very unique environment’. Another customer added, ‘I was asked what kind of music I liked so that it would be personal to me.’ One of the main reasons for this positive feedback is that to ensure a quality service, Phil spends double the time than a regular barber would with his clients making sure everything is perfect for the customer. So if you would like to try an experience normally reserved for A listers and their families (Phil has all the mod cons to keep youngsters occupied), then please visit his website www.barberloft.com to book a time or call him on 07501721235 for a chat beforehand.

Chief executive Nick Hurst and Jamie Pindard, sales and marketing director, explained some of the company’s frustrations and challenges in defence procurement. The £500,000 contract is the latest in a series of successes for Langage Science Park-based Artemis, which has produced over 3,000 HUD combiners and currently has products flying on 14 different aircraft worldwide. HUDs enable data to be projected into a pilot’s line of sight, and remove the distraction of having to look down at instrumentation. They also take up an eighth of the space of previous HUDs and are four times lighter, which adds huge value in the limited space of an aircraft’s cockpit. Johnny Mercer said: “I was really impressed with Artemis Optical and the drive and dedication shown by the management and all the staff. “Their outward facing attitude and effectiveness has secured a European deal which is really encouraging in this current EU climate as well as securing defence contracts which is the rock bed for Plymouth businesses and keeps Plymouth relevant and current in the eyes of Whitehall.

Artemis Optical chief executive Nick Hurst welcomes Johnny Mercer MP

“Plymouth needs business like this and Artemis Optical have not disappointed. I was delighted to see their success first hand today.” Nick Hurst said: “It was fantastic to be able to showcase our capabilities to Johnny, given his strong interest in defence. Our technology has the capability to save lives on the battle field, and we are proud to be a Plymouth company providing this world-leading technology.” Artemis’ 22,000 square foot purpose-built facilities include a 16,000 square foot environmentally controlled production laboratory and a range of modern coating chambers. Artemis has the capability to manufacture neutral, colour selective and amplitude graded combiners. With 25 years of experience in the design and manufacture of HUDs, Artemis is a recognised centre of excellence for producing thin film coatings that enable cutting-edge applications in the aerospace, defence and healthcare sectors. New livery for taxis to celebrate Mayflower? A new distinctive taxi livery for all Hackney Carriages could be introduced in Plymouth as the city gears up to commemorate Mayflower 400.

Offer expires 31/12/17

The public as well as the taxi and private hire trade are being asked what they think about the idea as part of a number of proposed changes to the city’s Taxi Licensing Policy. The new policy also proposes that all taxi drivers must attend a Plymouth Ambassador Course so that they can fully understand what Plymouth has to offer and enhance customer care. There is also a new dress code proposed for drivers to enhance the professionalism of the service. Other changes include requiring all drivers to receive safeguarding training, updated guidance on the relevance of convictions, code of good conduct, wheelchair and assistance dogs exemptions, and a spoken English assessment. Councillor John Riley, the Cabinet Member responsible for Licensing, said: “I am passionate about Plymouth and with Mayflower 400 fast approaching in 2020, this is an ideal opportunity to help our taxi drivers contribute to making Plymouth a first class cultural destination to be remembered. “We are carrying out a number of projects in the city to mark Mayflower 400 and introducing a taxi livery will help us support these projects.” Taxi livery for all Hackney Carriages has been successfully introduced in a number of cities such as Exeter and Brighton and has received positive comments from the public. The livery makes it easy to identify a licensed taxi which, in turn, improves customer confidence and promotes professionalism of the taxi trade.

New look for Plymouth taxis?

Councillor Riley continued: “We understand that this will be a considerable investment for vehicle owners and the Council is looking for any funding opportunities that could assist with this. “We are looking for feedback from local businesses, the public and the taxi trade about whether this should be included in the new taxi policy.”

Charles Hackett chief executive of Mayflower 400 said: “The international importance of Mayflower 400 provides Plymouth with an exceptional opportunity. We’ve got huge investment projects, civic and big public events, cultural, arts, education and community activities. “We have already unveiled a ‘Mayflower Muster’ week in September 2020; three historic trails in Plymouth, which will form part of a national network of trails, taking renovations to the historic Elizabethan House, an ‘Illuminate’ community and art festival of light; and the opening of ‘The Box’ – the £37 million attraction, gallery and museum complex which will become the city’s cultural centre.

“The year 2020 is a time for Plymouth and Plymothians to show the world what this city is really all about. “Now is the time for businesses to start thinking about how they can help sell the city as well as considering what they have to offer. Taxi and private hire drivers play a huge role in promoting the reputation of the city and I look forward to seeing what they think of these ideas.” The consultation started in October and full consultation details can be found at www. plymouth.gov.uk/feedbackandcomplaints/ consultations. Anyone who wants to make a formal representation about the draft policy should email taxi.licensing@plymouth.gov.uk or write to Taxi Licensing, Windsor House, Plymouth, PL6 5UF by November 27. They will also be holding a drop in consultation session on November 6 between 10am and 2pm in the Drakes Room, Lower Guildhall, Plymouth Guildhall.

Young offenders with the Plymouth Youth Offending Team are being given a chance to make amends for their crimes by taking part in a special community reparation project.

Head teacher of St Peter’s RC Primary School Paul Morse said: “We as a school are delighted with the work young people have done to support us and improve the environment of our school as this benefits all of the pupils.

Reparation is a practical way to pay back the harm caused by young people who commit offences, either by directly repairing the harm caused or through constructive work to help the local community.

“The team have come in at weekends and cleared back paths and fences overgrown with weeds and brambles, completely removed all graffiti and repainted our early years outdoor play area and colourfully redesigned the playground markings.

One of the successful projects the young people are working on is a creative wood work programme. This project started by turning a disused store, which was full of old furniture, into a youth centre and clean and tidy workshop.

Florence wins top apprentice award Florence Lungu from Bond Dickinson’s Plymouth office has won the Advanced Apprentice of the Year Award at the 2017 South West Regional Apprenticeship Awards. Organised by the National Apprenticeship Service and part of the 2017 National Apprenticeship Awards, the regional ceremony took place in Bristol. The awards recognised the businesses committed to growing their talent through apprenticeship schemes and showcased the apprentices who have made a substantial contribution to their workplaces. Florence, who is 20 years old, has been with Bond Dickinson for two years. After successfully graduating from her Level 3 Advanced Legal Apprenticeship ahead of plan in July, she is now managing her own caseload whilst working as a Commercial Disputes Paralegal and in January 2018, will commence another apprenticeship pathway which will ultimately see her qualify as a Chartered Legal Executive. Florence commented: “An apprenticeship was a very easy decision for me. Earning whilst gaining a recognised legal qualification, combined with future career progression opportunities was the perfect choice for me. I’ll soon start another apprenticeship pathway to become a Chartered Legal Executive, I have grown in confidence and will continue to share my experiences with others who also aspire to start an apprenticeship.” Mark Norman-Ball, deputy onshore manager at Bond Dickinson, added: “Hiring apprentices is absolutely the right thing to do in our sector. We wanted to create alternative routes into the legal profession and open up opportunities for young people who believe that University isn’t the right path for them. We are committed to developing and expanding our apprenticeship offering and to providing continued learning opportunities following our apprentices’ graduation. “We are very proud of what Florence has achieved in the two years she has been with the firm and this award win is a tribute to her hard work, determination and deep passion to not only develop a career in law but to also inspire others to consider apprenticeships as a different avenue into a legal career.”

Winners and highly commended entries from all the regions across England will advance to the next stages of the awards process, where they will be assessed by a national judging panel. National award winners and the Top 100 Employers will be announced at a ceremony to be held in January 2018 in London. Since becoming one of the first law firms to make legal apprenticeships available in 2014, Bond Dickinson now offers graduating apprentices permanent roles and hopes to further expand the scheme across other parts of the business and locations. The firm’s apprenticeship scheme was already rewarded earlier this year by the National Apprenticeship Service when it won Newcomer Large Employer at the National Apprenticeship Awards. Bond Dickinson was also named in the prestigious Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer list, which is compiled annually by the National Apprenticeship Service and recognises excellence in businesses that employ apprentices. Bond Dickinson is the largest law firm in Plymouth where it employs more than 180 staff.

Stoke STARS going from strength to strength Stoke Traders and Residents Association - better known as STARS – is growing in strength and influence thanks to the hard work and support of the local community and its residents. An open meeting was recently attended by Cllr Michael Leaves, cabinet member for strategic streetscene and the environment, and Gareth Harrison, head of streetscene and waste. The group were able to put their questions regarding the collection of rubbish, the maintenance of trees, grass and flowerbeds in the Blockhouse Park and on local streets, and parking. The community are keen to work with the council to ensure the streets are kept as clean as possible and

understand the need to increase recycling rates, and asked for better communication to know the schedule for street cleaning. Regular litter picking is organised by the community as well. They also made their requests known for sensitive grass cutting so the wild flower meadows in the Blockhouse Park were considered, and strimmer damage of young fruit trees in St Levan Park avoided. Cllr Leaves said that the plans for redevelopment of the park were impressive, and fitted the remit to ‘maintain and enhance’ public spaces. STARs is progressing with plans for the next Stoke and Blockhouse Summer Fun Day, on July 21 2018, and welcomes support from the local community to get involved to make it a truly inclusive day for all residents of Stoke.

It is also organising a Christmas Party on Saturday December 9. To this end Rev’d Alison Richardson of the Stoke Christian Centre is hosting two table top sales in November, and an opportunity for local people to come along and make a Christmas table top decoration. The sales are on November 11 and 18 from 10am to 1pm. These masterpieces can be taken along to be judged at the event in December, or just taken home to be enjoyed. The Christmas Party will take place on December 9 at Stoke Youth & Community Centre in Blockhouse Park from 2pm and then on later to The Stoke Inn. Entry is free and there will be refreshments, entertainment and mulled wine, plus Santa’s Grotto from 4pm, raffle and carol singing.

HMS Ocean sailors take on beach run after the hurricane relief work Fit sailors from HMS Ocean have taken part in a charity tenkilometre race in Miami following their hurricane relief efforts in the Caribbean. HMS Ocean, the Royal Navy’s Fleet Flagship, has been alongside the port of Miami for a brief visit following provision of disaster relief to British Overseas Territories after destruction by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The port visit into Miami allowed the ship to re-store food and take on fuel. The stop enabled 20 members of the ship’s company to race the 10k Beach Run, an annual event held in the sweltering heat (32C) and humidity of Miami’s Lummus Park and South Beach. The event raises funds for the McLamore Foundation, which to date has raised over $32 million to assist over 30,000 underprivileged students across North America and Puerto Rico. Six of the ship’s runners finished in the top 25 - out of 337. The top ship’s runner was Warrant Officer Alan Fuller with an impressive fifth place in 41:43 min , closely followed by Chief Petty Officer Douglas Veitch in 12th, Chief Petty Officer

Alan said: “It was great to be able to get some rest alongside Miami following our tasking in the Caribbean. We thoroughly enjoyed the ten kilometre run. The ship’s company put in a really good showing, despite the heat and humidity.’’ Commanding Officer of HMS Ocean, Captain Robert Pedre, said: “It has been a timely visit to Miami for my ship’s company following their stalwart efforts to assist the people of the Caribbean in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. This visit has been necessary to embark

fuel and stores and afforded a short break before returning to other operations.” HMS Ocean’s contribution to the overall Department for International Development (DfID) led UK relief operation in the Caribbean was significant. The ship’s helicopters proved particularly invaluable in a region where roads and bridges had often been destroyed; with Merlin and Wildcat helicopters from 845, and 847 Naval Air Squadrons alongside Chinooks from 18 Squadron RAF embarked. Royal recognition for Plymouth charity A Plymouth charity which works alongside courts in Devon and Cornwall to support both offenders and victims, has received Royal recognition.

“We have developed strong links to partners operating within the courts and specialist services across Plymouth and Cornwall and would like to thank them all for their good wishes and for celebrating this Award with us.

Devon and Cornwall Community Advice and Support Service (CASS+) has received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2017.

“Developing volunteers is a large part of our charitable ethos and we would be happy to hear from anyone who would be interested in volunteer roles within CASSPLUS via admin@cassplus.org.”

The award, which is the highest given each year to volunteer groups, sets the benchmark for excellence in volunteering and is equivalent in status to the MBE.

The Award was presented to the team by the Lord Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon at a special ceremony. CASS+ was one of five winners from Devon.

It recognises and celebrates outstanding achievement by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping and providing opportunity for others in the community and improving the quality of life.

Speaking at the awards ceremony David Fursdon said: “The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is highly sought after and speaks volumes for the strength and value of the voluntary sector in Devon as well as giving national recognition to the marvellous achievements of this year’s Award winners.”

Carole Edwards, general manager CASS+ said: “We are thrilled to accept the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service on behalf of our charity. This is a real honour and is testament to the commitment of a very small team of staff, and a very much larger team of volunteers, over the past 11 years. “We have been on quite a journey. I am so proud of everyone who has been involved with us - both past and present. They have helped to shape CASS+ and, most critically, to shape the lives of thousands of vulnerable people they have touched along the way. “We work with approximately 150 individuals each month, responding to the individual’s need for advice, support and sign-posting and raising referrals to a wide range of specialist services such as homelessness, drug and alcohol, finance, employment and training, health and mental health, to name a few. “People coming through courts for the first time receive support and help in understanding what is a frightening and complicated system; people needing practical advice have easy access to it because we are a drop-in service; those who are revolving through the system with lower level offences are helped to rehabilitate and improve their lives; families and victims are also helped.

Members of the CASS+ team at the presentation ceremony with the Lord Lieutenant of Devon David Fursdon

HMS Northumberland welcomes its new Commanding Officer A Royal Navy commander has assumed her latest role as captain of the Plymouth-based 23 Frigate HMS Northumberland. Commander Alexandra Pollard (known as Ally), is the 12th commanding officer appointed to the ship, the ninth of the Type 23 Duke Class Frigates. Commander Pollard said: “It is a tremendous privilege to be appointed in command of HMS Northumberland and I am delighted to have the opportunity to regenerate the ship and her ship’s company, building upon their already proud reputation and taking her back to her rightful place at the forefront of UK defence.’’ She gained a degree in classics from University

College London and joined the Royal Navy in 1997. Her previous appointments have included senior warfare officer in HMS Liverpool, air warfare officer for major multi-national military exercises, executive officer of HMS Richmond and latterly as the warfare officer career manager. HMS Northumberland is in the latter stages of a refit at HM Naval Base Devonport and is programmed to return to the fleet early next year. Cdr Pollard will now visit organisations and places affiliated to the ship in London and Northumberland. She will then oversee the transition of the ship from shore to sea as HMS Northumberland’s ship’s company move on board after the refit under the MOD’s major industrial partner Babcock.

Over a hundred and eighty Plymouth care workers were celebrated at a glitzy awards ceremony.

nominate for various categories, including the ‘People’s Choice Award’, and the winners were chosen by an independent panel.

The Celebrating Excellence in Care awards are organised by the Quality Assurance & Improvement Team at Plymouth City Council to showcase and celebrate best practice across adult social care and celebrate and recognise all the fantastic work taking place across the care sector in Plymouth, from residential and nursing care homes to domiciliary care agencies.

Hayley Bowden of Higher Park Lodge was named the winner of the individual People’s Choice award for care homes after the residents said “I always feel very safe here with her” and “She’s like a sister to me”, with her manager saying “She is one in a million”.

Lynda Bowyer, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “Following on from Carers Week, this event was another wonderful opportunity to celebrate people who do such an important job. Caring will touch each and every one of us in our lifetime, whether we become a carer or need care ourselves, so I’m delighted to lend my support. It’s a real privilege to attend these awards that celebrate the amazing work that is happening across the sector here in Plymouth every single day.”

The People’s Choice Award for domiciliary care went to Julie Bullock of Nurse Plus, who was described as “having empathy for the situations some of our service users find themselves in which is second to none and unconditional” and “I am struck by her caring and sensitive nature”. Representatives from care homes and domiciliary care agencies across the city attended the event and a raffle in aid of the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund at Derriford Hospital raised over £700 on the night, with fundraising continuing throughout the year for this cause.

Mature student Bogdan MONEY MA££ERS with Tony Jopson gives City College an A* Contrasting Christmases rating for their teaching A former teacher from Romania is among the growing number of mature students who is returning to education thanks to City College Plymouth. Bogdan Radu taught maths in his native Romania, but after moving to England, he went from teacher to student, and at 49 years old returned to college to take his GCSEs. He is now hoping to go on to gain his UK teaching qualifications and continue with his career. Alongside his studies, Bogdan gained valuable

experience in the English education system volunteering as a maths teacher at Cathedral School for over a year. Now, inspired by the teachers he has met, he’s keen to get back to class. “The teachers at the college are wonderful,” said Bogdan. “I have been a teacher since 1989, and in all that time, I have never seen lecturers so passionate about their jobs - they were very happy for me when I got my A*. “This country needs good teachers and I hope to be one of them and go on to teach maths at secondary school level. Now with my science GCSE, I can do that.” Most career pathways require applicants to have English, maths and science GCSE grades at a C/4 or above. This is now easier to achieve with City College where GCSE English and maths is free to those who do not currently hold these grades. Other financial support is available in the form of an Advanced Learner Loan. This funding allows those aged 19 and over that are looking to return to education, to ease the financial strain of tuition fees and living costs. The Advanced Leaner Loan helps those eligible to start courses with no upfront costs and they will only have to pay back the loan if their annual income exceeds £21,000.

It may seem a bit early to write about Christmas for the November Shopper but not so judging by the contents of some of the shelves in the supermarkets already! So I am going to share a few thoughts before many of us will have got round to thinking about shopping for Christmas.

First, presents for toddlers: why is it that whatever present you buy for a toddler they seem to be more interested in the wrapping paper or the box it comes in than the present itself? You can see it with pets too; buy all the kitten toys you want but the cat will still want to explore and eventually curl up and go to sleep in the box! I remember when our daughter Abi was around four years old and she desperately wanted a pink remote controlled ‘Barbie car’ (those were the days!). However this was quite a big present for her and there was a lot of negotiation and build up to its eventual purchase. Finally Christmas day came and the Barbie car was unwrapped and ‘batteried up’ for action. There was much excitement for at least a few minutes as it sped round the room. In the ensuing days, however, it was hardly used and its time with us ended I think the following Christmas as we gave it (‘in pretty good nick for a second hand car Guv’) to a local charity for passing on to some other

‘temporarily to be excited’ child.

My wife and I are trustees of a local charity called Contrasting Horizons (CH), which exists to relieve poverty both here and abroad and also to promote the Christian gospel. Among other things CH sponsors some children in third world countries through an excellent organisation called Compassion UK. Letters shoot to and fro with these children and it is noticeable that they report being delighted with simple toys like a hoop and stick or marbles. They seem to survive without the latest I-phones and big screen TVs and have something called ‘community’, which has perhaps been weakened in this country as we have become more prosperous, individualistic and self sufficient. So what can we learn from all the above? – well, perhaps that children (and cats!) may prefer Christmas ‘presence’ to Christmas ‘presents”. By this I mean that they would probably rather have a loving and caring family around them at Christmas than the most expensive toys. Certainly this is evident when we hear from the sponsored children abroad - they love to talk about the closeness of their families and although they have little materially, they seem so much wealthier than us in terms of family closeness and community. So why not try a ‘Contrasting Christmas’? Maybe you don’t need to spend lots of money on children (or cats) this Christmas, especially if

you don’t have the money and need to use the credit (I mean debt) card. Why not concentrate on ensuring that there is harmony within the household and that the children feel secure and loved – this is so much more valuable and doesn’t have to cost much money at all. As usual I set out below reminders of organisations you can contact locally for help with debt or money management problems if you have these. Let’s hope you don’t have to use them though. Have a great Christmas (it is coming) and I will pen some more thoughts in 2018. Caring for carers Providing practical support to carers through quality information, training and social opportunities

OF CROSS RHYTHMS, PLYMOUTH

The Autumn Years The temperature is dropping, leaves are falling from the trees and the evenings are drawing in. 2017 is coming to an end and we are now fully in the midst of Autumn.

1 in 8 adults (around 6.5 million people) are carers and by 2037, it’s anticipated that the number of carers will increase to nine million. Every day another 6,000 people take on a caring responsibility – that equals over two million people each year. 58% of carers are women and 42% are men and over one million people care for more than one person.

For many people I know this is their favourite time of the year. Taking a brisk walk through the woods looking at the myriad of coloured leaves on the trees is truly a thing of beauty. For others, the thought of winter on the way and the shorter daylight hours is not something they look forward to.

It is estimated that carers save the economy £132 billion per year, an average of £19,336 per carer. In Plymouth it is estimated that 29,000 people are undertaking a caring role.

If you’re over 18 and look after a partner, family member, or friend with an illness or disability, you can ask for a carer’s assessment to look at how caring affects you and the sort of help you need. You will be entitled to an assessment regardless of the amount or type of care you provide, your financial means or your level of need for support. You don’t necessarily have to live with the person you are looking after or be caring fulltime to have an assessment. Lee Sewrey, Caring for Carers manager said “At times caring can be deeply enjoyable. There is nothing more rewarding and human than helping our loved ones get the most out of their lives. There is also nothing more difficult than spending so much time thinking about someone else’s needs that you forget about your own. You may also be balancing caring with work and other family commitments and struggling to navigate through ‘the system’ which can

A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.

Are you looking after someone? Improving Lives Plymouth’s Caring for Carers service assists adult carers to engage with services and access activities and opportunities to support their physical and mental health. We work with our partners at Age UK Plymouth to undertake statutory carers assessments on behalf of Plymouth City Council to establish how someone’s caring role impacts on their life and wellbeing.

THE

be bewildering and emotional.” When you are caring, getting the right information at the right time can make all the difference. Friday November 24 is Carers Rights Day, the national initiative to encourage carers in their local community to become more aware of the help and support they are entitled to. Improving Lives Plymouth’s Caring for Carers team are hosting a tea and cakes event at the Copthorne Hotel, Armada Way, PL1 1AR from 11am to 2pm. Carers and their families visiting the event will be able to relax and have a free hot drink and cake and access free legal, housing, advocacy, mental health and benefits advice. Free taster sessions in hand reflexology, foot massage and nail art will be available throughout the day and there will also be some fabulous prizes in our fundraising raffle. The first 150 visitors will leave with a ‘goodie bag’ courtesy of Wolferstans Solicitors.

01752 201890 or email caringforcarers@ improvinglivesplymouth.org.uk or visit our website at www.improvinglivesplymouth. org.uk You can also register as a carer online at www.plymouth.gov.uk/adultcareandhealth/ caringotherpeople/helpandsupportcarers Sarah Austin, Carers Support coordinator said: “Caring for Carers facilitate several support groups for carer’s in Plymouth which offer friendship, emotional support, information, and peer support to carer’s who may otherwise feel isolated or find it hard to maintain relationships due to their busy lives and caring commitments. “Our groups run on various days and times across the city and provide a safe place for carers to meet to socialise, gain advice, or to just allow themselves the chance to sit down for a few hours with good company. “Some months there may be a guest speaker or the odd activity such as meals out at Christmas or a day trip, but at the very least you can always expect a warm welcome and a cup of tea and some cake. “It is a great chance for those who care for a loved one to make a bit of time for themselves to support their own wellbeing and to share their experiences with others who are in a similar situation.’

I suppose similarities can be drawn to the autumn years of our lives. For some it is an exciting time to enjoy retirement or grandchildren or time away from the busyness of their younger years. However, for others it can be a challenging time where the future seems uncertain and the best years seem to be in the rear view mirror. I recently heard a very interesting piece on a national radio station, where the presenter was discussing how grandparents are almost unique to human beings and rarely found in other species across the natural world. Apparently most other creatures live only as long as they can bear children and it is very uncommon to have a generation above that. Now I am no expert so I cannot comment on the validity of these claims but it got me thinking about how precious life is in every season of our lives, particularly as we get older.

If you are a professional who supports carers, or you have just started to look after someone, we would encourage you to attend this event as there will be many different organisations in attendance to offer support and advice.

As a 26 year old it may seem a little out of place to be writing about the value of later life. Whilst I can’t comment on how it feels to be at that stage of life myself I can comment on the immense importance I place on the older people in my life.

If you would like to register as a carer or require further information on any of the services we provide please contact us on

All too often these days there seems to be a divide between the old and the young, the so called ‘baby boomers’

and ‘millenials’ seem to be pitted against each other. This saddens me as I believe we are stronger as a society when we can work together and treat each generation with dignity and respect.

Some of the most important people in my life are my grandparents. I love speaking with them and hearing about their experiences in life. They can share first hand stories with me of some of the most challenging times in British history during World War 2. They have years of life experience to share and the wisdom that goes with that. As I face new challenges in my life it is a great strength to be able to share with those people who have raised children, lived abroad, worked their careers and are still alive to tell the tales! If you are reading this article and feeling like you have already lived the best years of your life please know that you are still incredibly valuable. Not only that, but you just don’t know what life might still have in store for you. I recently interviewed a couple on Cross Rhythms who, since retiring, have notched up thousands of miles cycling all over the world on a tandem bike! In fact they popped in to the studio whilst on their way cycling down to Spain! You can read more about their story online at www.themillers.bike and hear theirs and other Life Stories on Cross Rhythms 96.3FM each Wednesday at 1pm. The good book has plenty of stories of men and women having great adventures in the later years of their lives. Take Abraham for example. He was given a promise from God as a younger man that he only saw fulfilled when he was in his 90’s! So if you are in the autumn years of your life and feeling uncertain, unsure or unfulfilled, know there is still every possibility your best years are yet to come!

Walk for Freedom highlights plight of victims of modern day slavery Members of the Public may have wondered why a long line of diverse individuals was winding its way through Plymouth’s city centre on Saturday October 14. The eye-catching demonstration was part of a fundraising and awareness event called #WalkForFreedom which took place in 400 cities across 50 countries of the world. The purpose of the walk, operated

by a global anti-human trafficking organization called A21, was to raise awareness about the millions of men, women, and children who are still trapped in slavery today. Modern Day Slavery is known to be a $150 billion industry that affects millions of people; but is often happening whilst we remain unaware. The Walk, now in its fourth year, “is a tangible, practical, and doable thing for every single person. All of us can put our feet on the pavement and use

our steps to make a difference,” says Christine Caine, A21’s Founder. The walk participants wore yellow bandanas over their mouths with just three names on them, Eve, Ivan and Amy, to signify that slavery is experienced by real people living today. Eve is a young girl who was rescued at four years old from a red-light district in Thailand where she was given drugs to keep dancing eight hours a night in a bathing costume and make up to

attract tourists to the brothel. Amy was rescued by the US Police Department from her forced prostitution by someone she thought would love and care for her. Ivan answered a job advert in Ukraine, leaving his wife and children to earn more money than he could in his home town, but ended up having all his documents taken from him and forced to work 12-15 hours a day with little food, living in a camp controlled by armed men with dogs. He was rescued after

being thrown out into the forest to die as he had become too ill to work. As the fifty or so participants walked through Plymouth from Mutley Baptist church in single file, and in silence, it was clear that they were affected as much as the people who witnessed them. A21 is committed to the eradication of slavery, and believes that raising awareness through events like the Walk for Freedom is one of the most impacting things that it does. As ordinary people in Plymouth

become aware of what constitutes modern day slavery, there is more likelihood that these crimes will not continue to go undetected. Devon and Cornwall Police are committed to freeing the UK from modern slavery, and have advice on the Devon and Cornwall police website for citizens who wish to report a potential incident. If it’s an emergency call 999. Or, for help and advice call any time on 0800 0121 700 (free from landlines and most mobile phones).

Students take heart from CPR training

Every student at Plymouth’s newest secondary school has been taught CPR as part of Restart A Heart Day.

More than 150 students and staff at Scott Medical and Healthcare College were taught the techniques as part of the British Heart Foundation’s Restart a Heart initiative. The British Heart Foundation says that if you suffer a cardiac arrest out of hospital in the UK, you have less than a one in ten chance of surviving so the aim of Restart A Heart Day on October 16 was to train as many young people as possible and Sherri Mann, the college’s qualified first aider, ran CPR sessions throughout the day. Mrs Mann - who is also a personal coach - ran the sessions with help from Justin Sharples, South Western Ambulance NHS Foundation Trust’s assistant community responder for Devon. “It was quite a challenge to train so many students in one day but with the excellent BHF training film and with Justin Sharples being here we are really pleased to have trained so many people in one day,” she said. Mr Sharples said it was “absolutely fantastic” that the students were being trained. “Early CPR can make a huge difference,” he said. “The students were really engaged and enthusiastic and asked informed and relevant questions.” Year 12 student Bleona Recica said the training was ‘very important’. “I didn’t know how to do it before today,” said Bleona, who is planning to become a naval nurse. “I would feel confident doing it now – though of course I hope I won’t have to use it too often.”

Fellow Year 12 student Demi Graham – who hopes to go on to be a speech and language therapist – said the training was good fun. “That’s what it’s like being at Scott College, it’s really focused and hands-on, I love it here.” Scott College is a new state school which opened in September for young people planning to pursue a career in the medical and healthcare sector welcoming students from Plymouth, Devon and into Cornwall. There is a Year 12 Open Evening for current Year 11 students on November 29 – details are on the website www.scottcollege.co.uk.

Marjon students win national award

Four students from Plymouth Marjon University have won a national award for their voluntary work raising awareness of different speech and language needs.

The students, Hannah Burton, Grace Chugg, Hannah Greer and Marianne Johns were presented with the award by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy in Glasgow in a glittering ceremony. The judges praised the students for the valuable contribution of their Marjon Giving Voice society in raising awareness of Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) in the wider community. Over the last 18 months the Giving Voice team have

run a number of awareness raising events. These include an information day in Plymouth devoted to talking to people about SLT and listening to their stories and a Dysphagia Awareness Day, raising awareness of swallowing impairments.

for their huge contributions, we wouldn’t have done it without them”.

The team also supported local schools in the national Voice Box competition, which reminded people that all children need support to build their communication skills and confidence and some need additional specialist help to speak and/or understand what is being said to them.

“They have really excelled themselves and put into practice what they have been studying to make a difference in our community. We are incredible proud of them all.”

Grace Chugg from the Marjon Giving Voice team said: “We’re incredibly honoured to be recognised at a national level for our contribution to raising awareness of Speech and Language Therapy and would like to thank our Marjon lecturers and our fellow students

Dr Lynsey Parrott, senior SLT lecturer, said: “We are delighted that our students have been recognised for their hard work.

Marjon has been training Speech and Language Therapists since 1994 and is the only place in the South West accredited to train students. Academics are known for their pioneering work, such as Gillie Stoneham for her research into helping transgender people find their voice.
