Anjola Awe-some! Anjola Awe, a 14-year-old student from Devonport High School for Girls won a trip to the USA after coming top in a UK competition. Anjola, from Saltash, travelled to Los Angeles with Heather Williams, chief executive of Young Engineers, along with a group of other UK students who have a passion for STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Anjola won the UK Broadcom Masters title in Birmingham with her project on the Science of Language Development. Her success meant she qualified for the Broadcom Masters International event in LA. Alan Thomas, deputy headteacher of Devonport High School for Girls said: “The judges in Birmingham said that Anjola was a genuine credit to her school and a total delight to spend time with. She blew the judges away with her friendliness, her abilities, her social skills and her amazing project. For the UK competition students were interviewed for 30 minutes while they demonstrated their STEM project, discussed their love of STEM, their views on the importance of STEM and how STEM shapes the world both now and in the future. They had to display an ability to be mature and socialise with other students from all ages and walks of life, work together on two STEM projects with the other candidates and prove they would be an asset in representing the UK at the International Science and Engineering Fair. Alan Thomas added: “It was a stressful time but Anjola handled it magnificently. Congratulations to Anjola – we are very proud of her achievements.”

The Plymouth Shopper
The next stage of funding for Derriford Community Park has been approved, paving the way for exciting developments at the planned 140 hectare park.
The investments, which total over £500,000, will see the old Poole Farm Dairy renovated and transformed into a learning resource, a new play space designed and installed and the building of foot and cycle paths around the Park. Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning said: “Derriford Community Park is such a unique place so to be able to secure funding for the next stage of development is really great news. “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved here and know that this money will see what is a fantastic community asset continue to flourish.” Derriford has been earmarked as a key growth area for Plymouth with a new district centre, housing and employment proposed to be built over the next 20 years. The first phase of housing development at Palmerston Heights and the new St Matthew’s Church of England Primary School have already opened. Plans are also progressing on the new link road between Forder Valley and Brest Road, creating a new route between Derriford and the A38 and vital extra capacity
on the road network. Poole Farm, which was passed to the Council as part of the planning agreement linked with the new housing development, is key to Derriford Community Park. Plymouth City Council has teamed up with Devon Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency and South West Water among others to make the park a ‘Local Nature Partnership Hub’ valuing food, wildlife, learning and volunteering, The renovations of the old dairy at the farm will provide a space for local schools and colleges to learn more about farm life and will house a facility for keeping animals, staffed by members of the Duchy College Animal Management team, supported by a full-time apprentice animal care technician. A new partnership between Duchy College and a number of schools from the Plymouth Learning and Experience consortium will see a brand new further education course begin at the old dairy this autumn,
An artist’s visualisation of what the new Derriford Community Park will look like
meaning that young people in Plymouth will be able to try their hand at animal care in a farm setting within the city. Work to design and build the first element of a new playful space within the park is also included in the funding, as is 2.4 km of new off-road routes for walkers and cyclists. The new play space with have new features that use the rich natural environment of the community park as inspiration, and there are plans to involve the local community in the design process so that they have a say in how they want to play. Plymouth play parks Efford Playing Pitches to profit set for investment
Higher Efford Playing Pitches are set for a £500,000 makeover as part a city-wide scheme aimed at improving playing pitch facilities in Plymouth.
Children across the city will be able to keep fit and have fun in better play parks, thanks to investment of nearly £800,000 in outdoor play areas and equipment.
The project will deliver the action identified in the Plymouth Plan for Playing Pitches for the two current junior surfaces to be fitted with better drainage and the current pre-fabricated changing block replaced with a brand new, two-team changing facility.
A delegated decision is being signed on Tuesday to give the green light to improvement work that will cover every ward in the city. Plymouth has 126 play spaces and of these up to 60 of them have been assessed as ‘good’ and ‘very good’ based on Play England’s standards. Now the drive is on to carry out improvement work to make sure that the quality is improved across the city. Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning, said: “Lots of parents and carers will be delighted with this

drive to significantly improve our play areas. But this is not just about play. “Children who have great places to play outdoors and access to nature, regularly become fitter and leaner, develop stronger immune systems, have more active imaginations, lower stress levels, play more creatively and have greater respect for

themselves and others. “This is about putting the Joint Local Plan into action. We have a very clear policy to provide high quality play spaces within 400m of people’s homes and we are delighted that we are now in a position to deliver this.” As part of evidence gathering for the Joint Local Plan, the council carried out an assessment of all of its play spaces across the city with 29 out of 126 outdoor play spaces rated as poor or very poor, according to Play England’s quality rating. Whilst these sites will be targeted for improvement with the addition of new features to include natural play, there are also plans to develop play areas where there are gaps in provision. Throughout the the project there will be a comprehensive engagement programme. Communities will be actively encouraged to participate in decision making for improvements in their local play spaces.
Congratulations to Mrs A E Knight from Hooe and Fran Michael from Tothill Avenue who each won Edinburgh Woolen Mills vouchers worth £200 in our April competition.
Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport Housing and Planning said: “Improving the playing pitches and providing new changing facilities will enable this asset to be used to its full potential. This will enable greater participation in sport in Efford and the city as a whole. “We are confident that these improvements will ensure that we see more young people using and enjoying one of the city’s many wonderful green spaces.” The Plan for Playing Pitches, which is backed by the Devon Junior & Minor League, Sport England and the Football Association, will tackle an overall shortfall in playing pitch provision across the city as well as a shortfall in the quality of many of the existing pitches. This is particularly relevant for Higher Efford where drainage and pitch surface issues prevent the facilities being used to their full potential. The lack of suitable changing rooms also contributes to the under use of the facility. The scheme compliments a key objective of the Plymouth Plan, which identifies the need to deliver a healthy city by promoting the use of community facilities and public spaces as well as Public Health Plymouth’s aim to get more people of all ages involved in sports. Officers are currently working on the project with a planning application set to be submitted in the summer.

Tinside and Mount Wise pools open for the summer Plymouth’s popular Tinside Lido and Mount Wise Swimming Pools have opened for the summer season. Tinside Lido will open with its vintage twist again this year, as the popular attraction will be dressed in 1930s inspired décor and colleagues will sport retro uniform. Mount Wise Swimming Pools are another one of Plymouth’s hidden treasures. The facility consists of three outdoor pools, including a 25 metre main pool, a small paddling pool for younger children and a fun-packed activity pool with a whirlpool and bubble pool. Both facilities are managed by sports and leisure operator, Everyone Active, on behalf of Plymouth City Council. David Greenwood, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “Our preparations at both pools started on 1st April and we’ve had several staff members working to get them ready for the opening. Thankfully, we had a particularly mild winter last year, so the process has been smooth. “As ever, we’re expecting another busy summer for both pools and we look forward to seeing many enjoying the facilities on offer.” Entry for adults at Tinside Lido is £4.75 and £3.75 for children and pensioners. Entry to Mount Wise Swimming Pools is free. For further information on the pools and Everyone Active, visit www.everyoneactive.com.

Beryl Cook exhibition will feature some of her earliest work An exhibition featuring some of the earliest and quirkiest works by much-loved artist Beryl Cook (19262008) will go on display at the Council House from June 24. ‘Our Beryl: Beryl Cook at Home’ will run until September 9 and is part of the ‘On Tour’ programme that the City Museum and Art Gallery is running while its building is closed for the development of the History Centre. The exhibition has been co-curated with Beryl’s family.
Beryl’s son John Cook said: “Although she was popular, Beryl was actually quite reserved and found fame hard to deal with. She loved to imagine herself as an extrovert though, and some of her various guises will appear in the exhibition - her on a motorbike, in a shiny corset, as a cheerleader and dancing the tango.
Cook’s work is instantly recognisable and is represented in private and public collections across the world - but this exhibition will be a much more intimate affair. It will include Cook’s very first work, items she painted for her home in Plymouth, as well as a number of the paintings and objects she made for the people she was closest to.
Beryl took great interest in people and loved to see them performing and enjoying themselves. From nightlife of all varieties, to the more innocent pursuits of line dancing and sunbathing, a diverse spectrum of human activity can be found in her paintings, many of which also reveal her strong sense of fun. Exhibition opening hours will be 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and admission is free. Museum staff have planned a programme of related events including a lunchtime talk, exhibition tours, family activities and a special guided walk that explores ‘Beryl Cook’s Plymouth’. The Cook family has also developed a range of prints and other products that will be available to purchase. Exhibition curator Hilary Bracegirdle said: “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Beryl’s family and to be able to showcase so many works that people will have never seen in a public exhibition before. Beryl’s family was the most important thing in her life, and they will all be there for our visitors to see with their cats, dogs and tortoises, rendered with humour and affection.”

along to ‘Rule Britannia’ in the second half of the concert. Written in 1905 to mark the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar, Henry Wood’s ‘Fantasia on British Sea Songs’ is made up of nine parts which follow the course of the battle from the point of view of a British sailor, ending with a victorious return ensuring Britain will continue to ‘rule the waves.’ This year the first half of the concert promises a magical selection of music, including Chilcott’s Ophelia, Caliban and Miranda, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a fantastic medley from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, as well as Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue played by talented pianist, Mark Smith. The artistic collaboration with SpinDrift Dance Collective, directed by Suzie West, will also add a new dimension to the performance this year. SpinDrift Dance was co-founded by teachers and freelance performers, Suzie West and Sam Dukes, in 2010 to find new creative outlets for dance in education by bringing professional choreography platforms and their artists to community colleges and community groups. The SpinDrift Dance Collective will be performing some of the pieces at the Plymouth Fringe Festival on Thursday June 1. www.plymouthphoenixchorale.org for further information Baby and Toddler Group Friday mornings in term time St Pancras Church, Honicknowle Lane, Pennycross. Volunteers clean up in Compton
PRICES,
A group of volunteers from Compton have decided to do something about litter in their community.

Since February 2017, they have been regularly pitching in for a few hours each week to try to keep the streets and recreational areas of the Compton Ward litter-free.

The idea was instigated by Compton Ward Councillor, David Fletcher. He said: “I have been increasingly concerned about the volumes of litter and although Plymouth City Council street cleansing teams do their best to keep a handle on it, very often their efforts are thwarted by the sheer levels of litter that blight the appearance of certain areas of our City.

He said that levels of litter dropping and fly-tipping in England had worsened in recent years and it is estimated that litter costs taxpayers up to £850m a year to clean up. The group now consists of 15 volunteers who are fully kitted out with tabards, caps, litter-tongs and gloves. As part of its inaugural launch in February, the group carried out a thorough litter sweep of Hartley Park.

Residents’ views are sought on £2.5m investment plans for Central Park Central Park users are being invited for their thoughts on the £2.5 million investment in Plymouth’s premier park.
Opinions are being sought both online and in person through a series of information sessions to ensure that the money is used in a way that benefits park patrons. Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning said: “Central Park was originally created to help improve the health of the people of Plymouth so it is only right to seek the opinions of those who use it most. “We’re looking for as many people as possible to contribute their ideas so that the park remains as important to future generations as it is today.” The plans for Central Park include an overall enhancement of the park environment with path and boundary improvements as well as an arboretum, and the restoration of hedgerows amongst
many other things. To help deliver this phase, dedicated new Central Park rangers will specialise in a range of skills to start the much-needed renovation work to ‘tidy up’ the park. Users who want to get an idea of where the proposed improvements might be can join one of two unique Walk n Talk events happening in the park. Led by council staff, the walk will visit sections of the park to discuss plans, followed by a free cup of tea and opportunity to comment on plans in more detail in the Bowling Pavilions. The walks will take place on Tuesday May 30 from 3pm to 4.30pm and on Friday June 2 from 5.30pm to 7pm. Booking is essential. Register at www.plymouth.gov. uk/centralparkmasterplan2017 Meanwhile, council staff will be seeking feedback at a temporary gazebo by the park’s clock tower from from 2pm to 4pm on Thursday June 1, and from 11am to 3pm on Saturday June 3. Central Park users can also fill in an online form at www.plymouth.gov.uk/ centralparkmasterplan2017

“If people see volunteers picking up litter in their own time because they care about where they live, some people might think twice about dropping rubbish”.
Martin with his manager Chloe Evans
Martin Dingley was convinced he was unemployable when he was referred to Remploy’s Plymouth branch for specialist help with his job searching. The 50-year-old had been out of work for 10 years after he was forced to give up his job in a busy restaurant because of physical and mental ill health. “I really believed I was incapable of doing anything except the most menial work,” he said. “But from the minute I walked through the door at Remploy I felt able to talk openly with my employment advisor about my hopes and fears for the future.” Remploy helped Martin create a standout CV, provided interview training and worked on restoring his self-belief. The support paid off when he secured a four-week placement on Marks & Spencer’s employability

Over 50s wanted for big beach clean at Batten Bay The Marine Conservation Society (MCS), the UK’s leading marine charity, is looking to hook up people over 50 with their first ever beach clean. The charity is running a clean up for over 50s at Batten Bay, Plymouth, on Saturday June 3. It’s specifically aimed at people who were born in 1967 or before and who have never taken part in a MCS beach clean in their half century or more. The clean up at Batten Bay is part of a series of beach cleans around the south and east coasts of England funded by NESTA, the innovation foundation. The aim is to encourage people over 50 to start volunteering in something they’ve never done before and then for organisations to find innovative ways to keep them coming back for more! Research in 2016 from the Centre for Ageing Better, found people 50 and over were more likely than younger people to be highly committed to voluntary activity and were responsible for approximately 40% of all the volunteering, charitable giving and civic participation in the UK. But, conversely, this age group are also more likely than others not to make any contributions at all, with a large proportion completely disengaged. If you were born in 1967 or before, it was a period of great firsts - Coronation Street hit our screens for the first time, Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space, the first ring pull can was invented. Wimbledon went colour on BBC2 and the first heart transplant took place. Now MCS is hoping people who’ve had so many firsts in their lifetime will embrace another first – taking part in a beach clean with MCS! Justine Millard, MCS Head of Volunteering and Community Engagement says: “We’d love people to join our army of 50 somethings off to do their very first beach clean with MCS! Over 50’s are often of the generation that went to the beach as children and have then spent intervening years holidaying out of the UK. Their memory of the seaside may be totally different from today’s reality. Today there’s more plastic litter, more polystyrene, more cigarette butts, more bits of balloons. We’d like them to help us get our beaches back to the way they remember them - so our grandchildren and those of our friends, can build safe sandcastles in a healthy environment.” MCS says UK beaches are covered in litter which blows there from inland, arrives via rivers and washes in on the tide. “As the ‘flower power’ generation, we don’t want to be remembered as the people who turned our back on our beaches, says Justine Millard. “We’re want to see as many people at our beach cleans as possible. So if you are over 50 please bring family and friends with you – whatever their age!” If you were born before May 1967 or before and can get to Batten Bay on Saturday June 3 at 3.30pm then please register today at http://www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch/ events 8

Birthday celebration at Prestige Nursing + Care
Prestige celebrate their place in the community As it is Carers Week from June 12 to 18 it is fitting to acknowledge the contribution that one organisation has made to improve the quality of professional care for the past two decades in the city. Prestige Nursing+Care has had an office in Crownhill since 1997 and recently celebrated its 20th birthday Party at its offices in the Village, opening the doors to members of the local community as well as inviting past and present employees to enjoy each other’s company and eat cake!
It’s all smiles as Pemros Dental Practice marks its 20th birthday Pemros Dental Practice has plenty to celebrate this year. Not only is it the 20th anniversary of the St Budeaux surgery, it has also been confirmed as a member of the British Dental Association’s (BDA) Good Practice scheme for the seventh consecutive year.
have highly experienced hygienists – Sue has been a hygienist for 30 years – and I recommend that patients really do see a hygienist regularly. Dentistry isn’t just about fixing things; it more about keeping gums healthy.
Being a BDA Good Practice ensures nationally agreed standards are met and a consistent service of quality maintained for patients.
To ensure the most comprehensive treatment for patients, Pemros Dental Practice has an initial fivecomponent consultation, as John explained: “The first component is a chat about past dental experiences and general health. Extra-orally, we then check the jaw, neck and glands. We look for early signs of skin cancers in the facial and neck areas. Intra-orally, we look at the areas inside the mouth, such as the palate and underneath the tongue and check for signs of oral cancer. Finally, we look carefully at the teeth themselves and do a detailed assessment of the gums.
But principal dentist John Hill and the team aren’t resting on their laurels and have recently launched a brand new service for new and existing patients at the independent practice in Pemros Road. The Patient Care Coordinator service provides an opportunity for people to attend a complimentary consultation with experienced dental care nurse, Sarah Victor. The service is available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and is particularly designed for nervous patients or those who for whatever reason haven’t seen a dentist for some time: “People can come in and have a chat about their dental health and explore in a relaxed way what they would like to do,” explained John. “Some might have particular concerns about their dental health and some might be nervous about coming to the dentist. We introduced the service three months ago and it’s very popular not just with our existing patients but with people seeking dental treatment for the first time in years. ”The service is non-judgmental; it’s purely a discussion over tea or coffee.” John is joined by two hygienists, three dental nurses and two receptionists. Since the practice was opened in August 1997, John has seen a lot of developments in terms of treatments and knowledge:”It’s certainly a changing environment,” he said. “Dentistry is now more prevention-based and there is a greater awareness that oral health is a window to more general health. We know, for example, that there can be a co-relation between gum problems and a string of medical conditions including diabetes, strokes and heart disease. “So we focus on the wider health benefits of seeing a dentist and, in particular, a hygienist. The role of the hygienist is absolutely key because the prevention of gum disease and decay is paramount not only for oral health but in connection with those serious illnesses. We 10

“Years ago it was taken for granted that in later life we’d start to lose our teeth or suffer from gum disease. That is now completely avoidable and shouldn’t happen. Prevention is the key.”
Jonathan Bruce, managing director of Prestige Nursing+Care, travelled down from Surrey for the occasion. “Although Prestige has grown to having a presence in over 40 towns and cities across the country,” said Jonathan. “Our Plymouth branch was one of our very first. We were lucky enough to take on a very young Emma Bonney 17 years ago
and have been delighted to retain her services as office manager. She personifies our attitude towards care, one in which we would only wish to appoint carers who we would be happy to look after our own family members. Emma is extremely professional and extremely personable at the same time – qualities that we seek in everyone we recruit. The party was held in Prestige’s offices in Morshead Road, Crownhill, just across the road from their previous office space where they moved from three years ago. “Our space is lovely and light now,” said Emma, “We have rooms to conduct interviews privately with prospective staff and clients; and we have a full equipped training room with a bed and hoist facilities. Our specialised nurse trainer, Jane Lys, has been with us for many years and now is in demand for the whole of the South West region. She ensures that we are fully up to date in current
best practice required for caring for those individuals with complex needs. “We also have access to our firstfloor building through the rear with just one step and are very willing to come and assist anyone wanting to come and visit us. To celebrate 20 years, Emma and her team held a raffle in aid of the Mustard Tree Unit at Derriford run by Macmillan to thank them for the huge support they offer to patients diagnosed with cancer and their families. They successfully raised £1400 with the promise of some great prizes. An I-Pad donated by Prestige’s Head Office was won by Diane Powney; Marie Oakley won a Mini for the weekend donated by Ocean Mini; and Jeannette Snowden won a Range Rover for the weekend donated by Roger Young. Prestige Nursing+Care can be contacted on 01752 213213 or plymouth@prestige-nursing.co.uk.

“From these five components, we can discuss a treatment plan and we have a score so that thereafter, we can monitor the ongoing health.” The practice specialises in treatment for nervous patients and can offer sedation to relax patients while they’re undergoing dental work. Minimal intervention dentistry is used for all patients, to avoid extensive destructive treatment. Pemros Dental Practice has a membership plan for adults, currently £16.50 a month. Benefits are two dental appointments each year, which include an extensive dental health check, any necessary x-rays, and future planning and advice. Membership also provides two hygienist appointments a year, which include treatment to prevent and reduce gum disease. The plan brings with it a 20% reduction in treatment fees, emergency weekend cover and emergency call-out insurance. A children’s dental prevention plan is also available, currently £14 a month. This includes two dental visits a year, an assessment of the child’s developing teeth, and advice on diet and decay prevention. The surgery’s opening hours are 9am to 5.30pm on Mondays, 9am to 6pm Tuesdays to Thursdays and 9am to 1pm on Fridays. There is easy access to the reception and ground floor surgeries. Free parking is available in the practice car park and there is a bus stop almost immediately outside. Pemros Dental Surgery 19 Pemros Road, St Budeaux, Plymouth 01752 361722 www.pemrosdental.co.uk

said: “It was really great to see the community’s caring spirit. The funding from Affinity Sutton made this all possible. And we look forward to future events.” Pippa Gregory, neighbourhood investment officer from Clarion Housing Group (Affinity Sutton) said “It was wonderful to see so many residents come along and enjoy such a great afternoon. The volunteers who made the event possible, worked really hard to ensure that everyone had a good time. It is heartening to see such community spirit in action.”

Cost-effective boiler replacements
Gas boilers account for more than half of what homeowners spend in a year on energy bills, so an efficient boiler makes a big difference - that’s the message from Steve Short of Plymouth-based A Boiler 4 U. Steve said: “Most modern boilers are guaranteed for 5 years, but there are literally thousands of older boilers out there which are inefficient and probably coming to the end of their useful life. “In recent years there have been lots of schemes appearing to offer boilers replaced for free, particularly the Government’s ECO scheme, or grants towards a new boiler. However, there are strict criteria involved and many homeowners - particularly pensioners - can find it all very confusing. “I have come across quite a number of elderly homeowners whose boilers have broken down and they simply can’t afford to replace them. They may not qualify for a free boiler replacement and that leaves them in a pretty desperate situation.” He said that at A Boiler 4 U they are committed to bringing the cost of a new boiler down by offering great value for money. “We offer £400 scrappage on the old boiler and free 10 year parts

and labour guarantee on the new appliance,” said Steve. “Choosing a new boiler to provide the most energy and cost-efficient solution to heating and hot-water needs can be a daunting affair, which is why we offer a free assessment to help homeowners choose the best solution for their particular needs. “In today’s climate of rocketing energy prices, homeowners need a solution that will not only provide them with the level of heat and hot water that will meet their current and future needs, but also one that will be more cost-effective than their current heating system. “New boilers can be up to 30% more cost effective than their older counterparts, so while there may be a small upfront investment, the savings on your heating and hot water bills could be significant, allowing you to recoup any outlay for a new boiler over a few years in running-cost savings. “Choosing a boiler from our range also gives you enormous peace of mind, with some of the most comprehensive and respected warranties in the industry.” Steve’s family run company supply and install high efficiency
Plymouth property owner Mike Tatem is one of Steve Short’s customers - and he is delighted with the service he receives. Mike has a portfolio of properties in the city which are let out to students and for years he struggled to find a reliable plumber. Then around seven years ago a friend recommended Steve and Mike has never looked back. “Steve and his team have been brilliant. I was looking for a reliable and trustworthy plumber and Steve certainly fitted the bill. He’s thoroughly
condensing boilers from leading manufacturers such as Vaillaint, Baxi and Worcester and also offer a price match guarantee. “We are Gas Safe registered and our installation team have many years of experience in the industry. “Homeowners who have one of our boilers fitted start saving money each time they turn their tap on or switch on the central heating,” he added. In addition to supplying and installing new boilers Steve’s company also carry out boiler repairs and routine servicing as well as complete central heating installations. Achievements of the St Levan Neighbourhood Watch
Flooding in St Levan Park in 2007
Local residents may not realise but the St Levan Neighbourhood Watch group have been successful in various areas: St Levan Park
• Remember the November 5th bonfire a few years ago which caused so much damage?
• Trees. 12 fruit trees and six ornamental trees planted in the park.
With our insistence, fly tipping of timber and white goods on the Park was stopped and a new railing erected at the Ford Pub end to help stop this.
Our Neighbourhood
• Remember when dogs would run out of the Park onto the road? It could easily have been young children.
• Fly tipping and litter. Without us, you would have seen a lot more of this. • Rear access lanes. Cleaned more regularly. But the cleaning machines cannot do a good job if bins that could be taken in are left out. In some lanes, illegal loads have been left out. With our help, these have been cleared.
Because of our recommendations, safety railings and sprung gates have been erected at the entrances. • Remember when most of the Park would flood after a heavy downpour, with sewerage over some areas and manhole covers blown off? With our pressure, the drainage system was checked and cleaned out. The Park can still flood but not so often and not as bad. • The new park benches provided by Plymouth City Council. • The basketball area has also been provided by donations secured by us. • The mural was conceived by us, the paint donated and children painted it.
St Levan Park in 2017
• Graffiti. Dealt with quickly, when reported. So sometimes you would not be aware of it. • Speeding vehicles. Due to our pressure, the Police have been more active in St Levan Road with speed monitors and cameras. • Noise. We have given advice regarding inconsiderate neighbours which have proved effective. • Advice. We produce a newsletter which provides useful advice on a wide range of issues. We can only continue with your support, so please help us make a difference. We are St Levan Park Neighbourhood Watch.

The number of people in Devon and Cornwall who contacted Crimestoppers over the past year has increased by over 25%.
The independent charity runs a UK contact centre, staffed by professionals. It guarantees that all callers or those who use the non-traceable online form remain 100% anonymous. Last year the total number of pieces of information about crime in Devon and Cornwall received by Crimestoppers rose from 2,197 to 2,984. The largest share of information relates to drug offences and trafficking. There was also a rise in the number of people using the non-traceable online form. Last year the charity received 1,147 contacts online and 993 verbally, compared to 848 and 851 respectively in the previous year. Chair of Devon and Cornwall Crimestoppers, Mike Fowkes, said: “This is a fantastic result for Crimestoppers in Devon and Cornwall. “As an independent charity, we play a vital role in helping to make our communities safer. Those who, for whatever reason, feel uncomfortable talking to the police, can speak up about crime whilst remaining totally anonymous. “These figures show that more and more people are turning to Crimestoppers, especially online, to help tackle crime in our communities.” To report crime, call our national contact centre on 0800 555 111 or use the non-traceable online reporting form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org More information about Crimestoppers in Devon and Cornwall can be found at www.crimestoppers-uk.org and clicking on ‘In Your Area’.
Summer fun with partying in the parks As the days stretch away into bright mornings and long evenings, enthusiastic inhabitants of Stoke are preparing for a summer of festivals and fun, writes Karen Pilkington. Stoke is one of the best places in Plymouth to live at this time of year. The early morning sunrise is simply stunning for those bright-eyed enough to walk up to the Blockhouse Park to view it. If you are more of an evening stroller, then a walk after tea when the sun is just going down over the Cornish hills gives way to some of the most picturesque views the city has to offer. Long summer days are ripe for festivals – getting out doors, listening to good music and hopefully enjoying the sunshine. This year Plymouth is host to scores of events, but what is especially pleasing for those of us who live in this area, is that we can enjoy getting out and making the most of the parks right on our doorstep. Festival season in Stoke began early with the Spellbound Fairy & Goblin Festival at the Soapbox Children’s Theatre in Devonport Park last week. A truly magical affair that enchanted old and young festival goers, and gave an enticing glimpse of some of the fabulous
theatre that will be going on there throughout the year. The Friends of Devonport Park also held their Summer Fayre on May 28, celebrating the fifth Anniversary of the reopening of the Bandstand with the Park’s very own Community Choir, as well as great music by Soundhouse Brass and Sod’s Opera. And families with children can’t complain that there is nothing to do, as the park was filled with children’s fun games and activities. The long June days are just the ticket for getting in the mood for being outdoors with family and friends leading to a Festival Feast in July. St Levan Park Neighbourhood Watch is gearing up for its Annual Summer Family Fun Day, held this year on Saturday July 15. This is the fifth Fun Day to date, each year becoming bigger and better, helping this community action group fulfil its aim of making the St Levan Park more attractive and more accessible to all. St Levan Park Neighbourhood Watch are a fantastic group of volunteers, originally a small group of dog owners who became fed up with the vandalism and lack of care of St Levan Park. Banding together in 2007 they have successfully stopped the regular fly-tipping in the park;
lobbied for railings and self-closing gates to stop the danger of young children or animals running into the road; replacing rusty seating with something much more attractive and ensuring that the drainage system worked properly as in some cases flooding had been so severe that manhole covers had been blown off under pressure allowing sewage to seep onto the park. Victoria Park is also hosting a Dog Fest (and for children too) on Sunday July 16 from 10am to 4pm with fancy dress for dogs (and humans), agility for dummies – both dogs and humans, a treasure hunt, bouncy castle and lots of stalls. And, on the following Saturday July 22, Stoke Stars and Friends of the Blockhouse Park will be relaunching the Stoke Village and Blockhouse Park Summer Fair with the help of local events company, Diverse Events. Diverse Events has been involved in developing a number of local community and commercial events for some time now, recently celebrating the start of their fifth year. When Aaron, the director of Diverse Events, met with the Stoke Traders and Residents Association and was informed that they were facing issues with their summer fair it was simply a no-brainer that he must get involved. “STARS are working tirelessly for the community in Stoke
and surrounding areas, they love the community they live in and truly want to raise the profile of the assets they have in Stoke Village & Blockhouse Park – which in itself is a hidden gem in Plymouth” explained Aaron. “I love working with community groups, helping their events grow and thrive. We may be short for time and finances at The Stoke Village & Blockhouse Park Summer Fair, but with the right support from Diverse Events, STaRS and the wider community it is sure to be a great day.” Lining a section of Masterman Road with stalls will ensure the village flows into Blockhouse Park where you’ll find more stalls, inflatables, live music and entertainment - not forgetting the stalls inside the community centre too. Pat and John Kinsman, who have been running the community centre in the Blockhouse Park for decades now, have been instrumental in keeping the idea of celebrations in Stoke going – even suggesting bringing back the old parade which went all the way through the village, which may be a real possibility in years to come. This year the Fair starts at 11am and all the participants and organisers hope to see you for a full day of live entertainment, kids activities, food, drink and even a dog show!

Magic in the air at Devonport Park Neil Clarke teaches Shaun some circus skills with the diablo
Words and pictures by Roy Perring
There was magic in the air at Devonport Park and plenty of fairy dust for the second Spellbound Fairy and Goblin Festival. Two days of entertainment were provided for the children and adults who attended. More fairies were to be spotted than last year which seemed to be full of goblins.
Not all of the winged beings were children either, Stiltskin’s own Iain and Jaqueline Slade led the way in style. Kevin Billing, who was a pirate on the Barbican the previous weekend, sported both wings, a flying helmet and goggles. How’s that for style! He was accompanied by both a fairy and a ladybird. Organised by the children’s Soapbox theatre this mini festival provides much more than an excuse for dressing up. Storytellers including Isabella’s Story Bicycle were on hand to entertain, there was music in the marquee and it was possible to brush up on circus skills. We caught Neil Clarke looking quite accomplished on the diablo. Jaqueline and Iain Slade of Stiltskin

Crowds turned out in force for the Spellbound Fairy and Goblin Festival
Other events included face painting, a photo booth, plus craft activities and workshops. A second walk through tent provided an opportunity for craftspeople and artists to sell their wares as well as a book signing by children’s author Leyland Perree. Food and drink was on hand plus a chance to shop at the theatre’s gift shop. Looking to the future, planned to run from July 5 to 16 is the Stiltskin’s adaption of the Grimm’s Brother’s story Rumplestiltskin at the Soapbox theatre in Devonport Park. It’s about a little man who turns straw into gold. Expect to see bankers in the audience, just joking this fantastical tale is for children from seven years upwards to enjoy. Book early to ensure your seats.

Students take on the Soapbox challenge A group of students from the University of Plymouth will be combining their engineering expertise with raising environmental awareness after being selected to participate in a major international event. The four Stage 1 engineering students – under the team name The Dramatic Aquatic – will be joining around 70 other teams on the start line of the 2017 Red Bull Soapbox Race in London on Saturday July 9. They are now putting the finishing touches to their design in the hope of producing a vehicle that will speed down the 420m track at Alexandra Palace, and survive intact. They are also starting to create an eye-catching exterior shell that will raise awareness of the problem of marine litter, a subject in which the University is leading the way in terms of research and awareness-raising. And they are developing a 20-second crowd-pleasing performance, which they will have to act out before pushing their soapbox into action. The team comprises students Harrison Drayton, Izaak Frost, Campbell Thomson and Jessie-May Turner, who started working together during their Plymouth Plus module. Harrison said: “We looked at the projects previous engineering students have been involved in, such as the handcycling world record and human-powered submarines, and thought this would be a great next step for us.

The exterior will then be made out of plastics which the students plan to collect through beach cleans, all formed together in the shape of a squid.
“ Our lecturers agreed so we started to get creative with the design, and settled on one that we thought would be fast and competitive. But we also wanted to showcase something Plymouth is known for, and promoting the

Travel grants available for businesses Employers across the city are being invited to bid for grants to provide either facilities or initiatives to enable their staff to travel to work either by bike, on foot or by bus.
but lacked enough secure cycle storage on site.
Match funded grants of up to £5,000 are being made available through Plymouth City Council’s Plymotion at Your Workplace programme to provide facilities or initiatives to encourage employees to leave their car at home and make the switch to greener modes of transport.
“This led to an application which they led me through and gave much assistance. This resulted in a successful application and the eventual erection of a shelter on our premises that is regularly used and has led to an increased number of people cycling to work.
The grants could be used to provide facilities like improved cycle storage or lockers for staff, or initiatives such as a dedicated car share service or subsidised bus passes. This is the third time grants have been made available with previous successful applicants using the funding to provide improved cycle parking, enhanced shower and changing facilities, and electric pool bikes. One of the successful applicants in 2015 was the YMCA Plymouth on Honicknowle Lane. A large number of staff and students of Discovery College cycled to the venue
A manager of YMCA Plymouth commented that “fortunately for me I met the Plymotion team at an event and through discussion with them they were able to point me towards the match funded grant scheme.
“This has also provided an additional facility for students and customers to use. “I am grateful to the Plymotion team as without their assistance and the grant provided we could not have moved this forward.” Applications will be accepted until August 25 and will be considered on a first come, first served basis. Successful bid proposals must be delivered and invoiced by the end of December 2017 so apply early to be in with a chance. We love telling great stories about local people, businesses and our communities. But they would not reach you, our readers, without our great team of distributors delivering them to your door.
in, month out in all weathers. These enthusiastically motivated individuals and families do the best possible job for you, our paying clients and us. They deserve our gratitude.
We are so blessed to work with over 90 mature and wonderful distributors and back checkers who deliver your Plymouth Magazine, local Plymouth Shopper, Torpoint Advertiser and leaflets month
As well as ensuring that leaflet drops are delivered properly, our Distribution Coordinator Tim & his colleagues, Simon & Adrian have built strong relationships with each one of our team. We love to
One distributor found a set of keys left in a front door. He dutifully tried to knock and let them know, but no response. Because he knows the stree ts well, walking them for years, he had a sense all was not well. He called the police, and it turned out after several days that the householders had gone abroad on holiday in a bit of a hurry, leaving the house and car keys in the door. Needless to say, they were very relieved and grateful to receive their keys back from the police! A Backchecker, who may well knock on your door to verify our Plymouth Magazine or Shopper delivery, is a retired insurance man - well used to doorstep etiquette. He enjoys walking, meeting new people & earns while he burns (calories!).
Everyone has different motivation to take on a round, one lady has used the income to pay for her teenage sons mobile premiums, rugby kit & downhill mountain bike. As this includes exercise, it has been a better family solution than the usual withdrawals from the Bank of Mum and Dad.
see our distributors develop while they’re with us - many go on to find salaried employment after a few months, others stay for the long haul (some well over 10 years). We encourage our distributors and back checkers to develop a sense of community responsibility for the neighbourhood streets they walk as part of their round. So here are just a few of the stories we hear on a regular basis from our distributors:
A mum who worked in a school, delivered every month for 10+ years, at the same time took a part time University degree and recently achieved a promotion at her school! We are proud & celebrate like it is a member of our own family! A young man, in his early 20’s, was liv ing a nocturnal ‘comput er games’ lifestyle – rising at 2pm onwards, not really attempting to find work. He took on several rounds, after prom pting from his Grandfather, ca me off allowances, and began to earn and got fi tter. His ‘shoulders went back’, his self-esteem rose & he is now full tim e employed.
A retiree who was looking for some top up income to his pension has been delivering leaflets for a few hours a day. He’s lost weight, his knees (once a cause for concern) are significantly better, and he has remarked how he feels useful and valued again.

MONEY MA££ERS with Steve Carey
Winter’s coming!
Over 50? Now’s the time to find out about your pension for free Citizens Advice Plymouth is celebrating two years of the Pension Wise guidance service by asking over 50s to book a free appointment about their pension options.
“The pension freedoms have given people a lot of options they might not be aware of or fully understand, such as cashing in part of their pension. A Pension Wise guidance specialist can talk you through options and get you on the right track towards a financially secure retirement.”
The average age of people in Exeter getting help with their pension is 64 despite free guidance being available for anyone over 50, reveals the Pension Wise team.
To book a face to face or telephone Pension Wise appointment call 0800 138 8292.
It can add up to a rush at the last minute and Pension Wise is encouraging people to get smart about their pension as early as they can.
• First, work out the value of your pension pots. You can look at your most recent statement, or contact your provider.
As the Pension Wise service reaches its second anniversary, Citizens Advice Plymouth says it’s never too early to start planning for your retirement and is encouraging locals 50 and over with a defined contribution pension to book a free guidance session. In April 2015, rules around pensions changed and for the first time, people were able to decide whether they buy an annuity, cash in their whole pension pot, take a lump sum, or a mixture of these options. Emma Handley, chief executive at Citizens Advice Plymouth said: “Now is the time to find out about your future. Pensions can be worrying things but we are here to help you and explain your options. For many 50 year olds retirement may seem a long way off but it’s a good time to start understanding how your pension could support your plans for the future.
What to prepare to get the most out of your Pension Wise appointment:
• Check if there are any restrictions on your pension, such as penalties for taking it early. • Get a state pension forecast - you can find out how to do this from https://www.gov.uk/checkstate-pension • Gather information on any benefits you receive as any pension decision you make could affect these. • Work out your likely living expenses, including the cost of essentials like housing and utilities, and leisure activities. This should help you come up with a rough budget, which you can compare to your potential pension income. Bring the information to your Pension Wise appointment. Your guidance specialist will help you think through your circumstances, and present the options available to you.
As Jon Stark might have said, had he been a finance consultant, ‘the financial winter is coming’. I want readers to help prepare for the inevitable. Why am I concerned?
Recent surveys have reported a massive increase in consumer debt. Only last week a survey reported that over half of households under the age of 35 years could not afford to pay an unexpected bill of £250, without turning to credit, or the ‘bank of mum and dad.’ To put that figure into context, that means over half of young families would struggle to replace their washing machine or oven if it broke beyond repair. Car finance is booming, with stories of buyers earning £10,000 a year running cars that would cost twice that. All financed by cheap (or not so cheap) debt. Winter’s coming? Inflation is on the rise. While some of this is a technical increase, some of it is due to underlying cost pressures. At some point in the foreseeable future (maybe as early as the end of this year), interest rates will start to creep up again.
stark reality is that nearly all of us can find the cash to do what we really want to do. The question then becomes, ‘How much do you want to stabilise your finances?’ One of the best ways to build up a ‘rainy day fund’ is to save the money before you see it. If you are employed, could you persuade your employer to pay part of your wages direct to a savings account? In this way, you can start to build up that emergency fund. If you run your own business, can you set up a standing order payment into a similar account. I have found this particularly helpful, as it means I’m less tempted to find an excuse not to save. To make it easier to resist temptation, I have chosen an account to which I do not have access online. The principle is that I’m making it harder to spend the money I am saving. What if I don’t have that luxury?
Readers may be thinking it is easy for me, but with four children, we have struggled as a family to make ends meet, and running a small business sometimes means we cannot even pay ourselves the minimum wage.
A potential solution
One technique we used before we could save on a regular basis, was to draw cash for our weekly budget, and leave the bank and credit cards at home. Basically, this had two positive impacts:
I appreciate that some may not be able to put this advice into action, but the
• We noticed how much we were spending, to a much greater extent.
Now is not too soon to take evasive action.
• We were far less able to make impulse buys. You see, credit and debit cards make it much easier to spend, by reducing the ‘pain’ associated with it. Seeing your weekly cash running out makes you far more aware of how much you are spending, and reinforces that excellent financial discipline of planning your purchases. Yes, winter’s coming, but we have time to prepare ourselves, if we want it enough. Steve Carey, Numbers UK Ltd 01752 226084 www.numbersukltd.com

Elaine Ponsford is one of Cornerstone Vision’s faithful distributors, delivering the Plymouth Shopper in all weathers, to bring you community news and offers from local shops and services every month. Elaine, and her friend Zoi Anastasa, run a support group in Plymouth for people suffering from Vasculitis - a group of disorders that destroy blood vessels by inflammation. The group is for friends, family and carers, as well as sufferers. Elaine was diagnosed with Wegener’s Granulomatosis, a form of Vasculitis which is very hard to diagnose and which can be life threatening if not treated early enough. “I had to leave my job, and my volunteering role, because my sight degenerated so much,” said Elaine. “There was very little support available, and doctors who are qualified and know about Vasculitis are not that common.” To overcome the isolation
her condition was causing her, Elaine took up a part time role as a distributor for the Shopper. She refused to give up hope and was determined to live life as best she could, and to find help. Eventually, she had an operation which has restored the sight in her right eye. “It’s brilliant to be able to see clearly in that eye,” said Elaine, “I’m looking forward to a second op to fix the other one, in June”. Plymouth Vasculitis Support Group held its first meeting in June 2016, attended by 17 people. “The group is a place to talk about conditions and treatments, give each other emotional support, and share our experiences of finding qualified help,” said Elaine. In addition, the group has so far raised £107 for Vasculitis UK. For more information about Vasculitis, visit the Vasculitis UK website: www. vasculitis.org.uk. Experience
Try some random acts of kindness By Ian Pilkington, Trustee, Cross Rhythms Plymouth ‘Be kind to one another, for everyone is fighting a hard battle,’ is a brilliant summary of how we should think before we treat others harshly. It comes from Rev John Watson (pen name Ian MacLaren) and is often mis-attributed to Plato. The source isn’t as important as the meaning, though, so I wouldn’t get hung up on it. Be kind to one another … that echoes a verse or two in the Good Book, such as ‘Love is longsuffering and kind’ and ‘Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you’. Recently I’ve been thinking how ‘longsuffering’ (patience) and ‘kindness’ are linked in the Bible. Surely, we can all be kind when the sun is shining, we have
food in our fridge, work is a dream and the people around us are treating us well. It’s a bit more of a stretch when we’re having the day from hell, we’re stressed out by other people’s seemingly amazing ability to let us down, and the kids have smeared jam all over the new sofa. Kindness can be lacking. Oh yes, we’re suffering … and everyone knows it by our demeanour, and how we treat them!
a difficult week. And I was about as far away from being ‘patient and kind’ as I had been for a while. The upshot was an unhappy household that night following a series of barked orders to my lovely kids, and a stony, sulky lack of communication with Karen when she got home later. Next morning, not trusting myself to say anything worth hearing to my family over breakfast, I took myself off to the study to sit alone, in silence. And then Connie came downstairs, a five-year-old clutching all the bedtime friends (three teddies and an old pyjama top of mine) which go with her all through each night and into the mornings.
Be kind … I had a good example of this recently from my five year old daughter. As Dad, I had been pretty abrupt with the family one evening after work. Something about coming home to find that not only had the kids forgotten to tidy up, but had caused about 10 times Chris Cole, is the founder of Cross Rhythms charity. “Hi Daddy, what are you doing in here.” Her innocent, open question
was the first one that had got through my defences for 24 hours. “Well darling, I’ve been a bit grumpy and I don’t want to be with everyone in case I do it again.” She paused, then climbed up into my lap, “Maybe a cuddle will help.” Undone. Totally undone by the kindness of a five year old. I had been quite unloving to her the night before; she had forgotten and forgiven me, and just moved out of her childlike kindness. And it broke my isolation and softened my heart. At the time of writing, as my family will testify, I’m not quite over this period of pressure and resultant grumpiness. But through the soft light of kindness received, I am beginning to see things a bit better, and act a bit better myself. Go out and perform a randomly kind act for someone who is totally undeserving – you could change their life, and the lives of a whole bunch of people that they will meet after they’ve met kindness, in you.

New world record for Plymouth based sailing duo boredom when we were either going nowhere, or backwards, to hairy gusting gales making the boat exhausting to keep up right and going in the right direction. The waves often swamped us and whitebait were thrown into the bottom of the Bosun. During the calmer conditions dolphins followed us and a sparrow hitched a lift.’’
Two intrepid Plymouth based Royal Navy sailors, Leading Hand Phil Slade and MOD worker Mark Belamarich came alongside in Holyhead Harbour bringing to an end their latest gruelling world record breaking attempt to sail the furthest in a double-handed dinghy.
Mark said: “We will never forget this experience. We’ve had the adventure of a lifetime. It was tough, there’s no denying it. But it makes it all the more worthwhile being hard and at the same time boosting funds for the charities, especially Bowel Cancer UK which have a vital role in helping people like me. Look what I’ve achieved as a bowel cancer survivor!’’
The pair are confident they have broken their own world record set last year (309.25 nautical miles) sailed in their 14ft Royal Navy Bosun Dinghy by recording a fantastic distance of 331.5 nautical miles, an increase of 22.25 nautical miles, through unpredictable and difficult conditions from their base at Royal Marines Stonehouse in Plymouth.
Tim Corke, regional fundraiser for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, said, “What Phil and Mark have achieved is incredible. Sailing such a huge distance in a two man open dinghy over 5 days at the mercy of the weather really shows their dedication, skill and moral fibre. We cannot thank them enough for undertaking this fundraising challenge. The money that they have raised will be put to good use funding projects to support sailors, marines and their families for life and also research into bowel cancer to save lives ”
Phil and Mark celebrate their record breaking achievement
Phil, an experienced sailing instructor, and Mark, an MOD sea survival trainer, have been raising for two charities close to their hearts, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and Bowel Cancer UK. They have so far raised £3,500 towards the charity’s work supporting Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel and their families and vital research into bowel cancer. Phil said: “We are both very pleased to have broken our own world record and made it that bit more difficult
for it to be broken by anyone else. We aimed to raise awareness of adventure dinghy sailing and benefit our chosen charities.’’ He added: “This was a brilliant experience and was everything an adventurous activity should be. This showed the military ethos and our teamwork at its best. We were pushed to the limit physically and mentally by the conditions. We survived everything the sea could throw at us – from flat calm and inevitable
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the first person to sail singlehanded and non-stop around the world commented, “My congratulations and best wishes to Phil and Mark for taking on and completing this difficult challenge. The unstable weather and tidal conditions on this coastline make sailing taxing at the best of times but in such a small boat what they have accomplished is nothing short of remarkable”. To show your support and make a donation visit http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/bosunchallenge500. All donations will be split between the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and Bowel Cancer UK.
