Plymouth City Council leader Ian Bowyer has joined calls from councils across the South West for a fairer funding deal from the Government as the city faces huge challenges in balancing its books. Leaders of Devon, Isles of Scilly, Plymouth, Somerset, Torbay, Dorset and Cornwall Councils are calling for central government to stop disadvantaging councils and ensure funding properly reflects their needs. 100 per cent of business rates collected instead of receiving grants.

A petition calling on the Government to pay for the recladding of three tower blocks in Devonport has been launched. Luke Pollard, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, has teamed up with Devonport Councillor, Bill Stevens, to offer his support to a local petition, calling for urgent funding to be allocated to reclad Mount Wise’s three tower blocks. The cladding on the three tower blocks failed a series of fire safety tests ordered in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. Despite assurances of support from

Anyone interested in signing the petition will find petition forms in Devonport Live and the Devonport Guildhall. Councillor Bill Stevens said: “It is unacceptable that six months, let alone six weeks after the awful tragedy of Grenfell Tower, the Government has not taken the urgent action it promised on other tower blocks around the country like here in Mount Wise.

“This is not right. It is time Plymouth Community Homes got the funding it needs and that the Mount Wise residents got the peace of mind they deserve. The Government needs to act to stop a similar incident happening again.”

Plymouth Community Homes, the local non-profit housing association is struggling to find the estimated £20 million for the recladding without Government support.

“Devonport’s councillors want to see this dangerous cladding removed but the only way we can afford to do that as a city is if Government helps us with funding. Every day in the tower blocks, residents are living under uncertainty and fear.

helping some of the poorest communities in the country with these essential fire safety measures there’s no money to be found. In April I will present Councillor Bill Steven’s petition to the House of Commons helping to pile pressure on Ministers to fund this essential work.”

Luke intends to present the petition to the Speaker of the House of Commons in April to demonstrate the strength of support for recladding the tower blocks from local residents in Devonport.

“The fact that six months on from Grenfell there is still combustible cladding on Devonport’s tower blocks is a national disgrace. In times of national emergency like this we need a national response and it simply isn’t good enough for Conservative Ministers to delay and delay in the hope that this goes away. It won’t and I won’t stop fighting for the people of Devonport until the unsafe cladding is removed.”

Luke Pollard MP said: “The Government is failing the people of Devonport by refusing to help with the costs of recladding the tower blocks. There’s always enough money for tax cuts for the rich, but when it comes to

A three per cent Council Tax precept to pay specifically for adult social care would raise just over £3 million towards this gap in funding services for vulnerable adults needing care and support, leaving the Council to find other savings to cover the extra costs. While last week the Government announced an additional grant of £150 million nationally for social care, Plymouth’s share was only £803,000, which is nearly £500,000 less than last year.

The Council is also having to fund an additional £3.2 million costs of providing care packages and support for vulnerable children. Other challenges facing the council this year include a reduction of £405,000 in its public health grant and £129,000 in its funding to administer housing benefit. The Council is having to save a total of £10.3 million to deliver a budget for 2018/19, which is equivalent to 5.6 per cent of its budget. The Council’s Medium Term Financial Strategy is projecting a further funding gap of around £20 million in 2019/20 and 2020/21. Councillor Bowyer said: “In Plymouth we have been

successful in dealing with the massive challenges that have been thrown at us over the last few years – reduced funding and big rises in demand for our services. We have to be innovative in finding new ways of providing services and joining up with our NHS colleagues, for example, and over four years we have delivered £80 million of efficiencies. Even with all that we are having to manage very significant ongoing gaps in our budget. This cannot be sustained and it is not acceptable to pass all these pressures on to residents through Council Tax or through reduced services. We need the Government to review how it allocates funding for local government to take account of local factors and a realistic look at the pressures we are dealing with.”

Plymouth’s plans to build more vitally-needed homes on councilowned land has been given a £3.9 million cash boost. Projects to build on parcels of land, which could see up to 650 homes built, have been awarded funding from the Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government. to help unlock the land for development The Land Release Fund supports 79 projects across the country to build and will inject £45 million into key community projects to support building up to 7,820 new homes nationally Councillor Patrick Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning said: “This is great news and will help us prepare land for development that will create homes for families here in Plymouth. “A lot of these sites have been derelict for years and need some investment in order to make them ready for developers. This includes demolishing old buildings, creating the right infrastructure such as roads and providing utilities. “We know people want to make sure we use brownfield sites as much as we can before looking to build on fields, these projects do exactly that.” The successful bids will release lands for homes by March 2020, enabling publicly-owned land and buildings to be used more efficiently and deliver real benefits to communities across the country. In Plymouth the schemes are: Colin Campbell Court Bath Street West Stirling House, Honicknowle Corporate Asset Release Programme– a number of smaller parcels of land that have been grouped together Land at Prince Maurice Road Efford Health and Wellbeing Hub He added: “We are particularly pleased to meet the criteria to receive this funding we had to show value for money, innovation and the contribution to wider government housing objectives.”

Sport England funding for Active Together A pioneering project by Plymouth’s Sports Development Unit to help local people on a low income become more active has won backing from Sport England. The Active Together family groups have been awarded £8,488 funding as part of Sport England’s strategy to improve people’s health and mental wellbeing through sport and activity. Sport England is funding a wide range of projects around the country, using varying approaches to help people to feel healthier and happier. Sport England research shows that a third of people on low incomes do less than 30 minutes of exercise each week, and inactivity in people on a low income is twice that of people on a high income. This funding will support family based activities in Astor Park, Victoria Park and Devonport Park. Parents, carers and children can take part in an eight-week program of free and fun activities and receive healthy lifestyle advice. Families will be able to access follow on activities and support to continue keeping healthy. The program is due to begin in the late spring. Councillor Glenn Jordan, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “I am delighted we have been awarded this funding, this project will show families that a healthy lifestyle can be fun and easy” “Helping lower income families stay active is very important for the city, and the follow-on support as part of this project will ensure parents and carers can maintain a healthier lifestyle for them and their children.” Sport England executive drector, Mike Diaper, said: “Plymouth City Council Sports Development Unit has a strong track record of working with their local community and we’re very excited by how their project could make such a positive difference to people’s lives.” The Plymouth Shopper

Local company takes to the ice ITV’s Dancing on Ice 2018 is well under way, and employees at BAM, the Plymouth based bamboo clothing company, are glued to the screen every Sunday.

BAM has kitted out the 12 celebrities and professionals with bamboo leggings, baselayers and socks to be worn during their training sessions BAM general manager, Louise Laurie, said: “We were delighted to receive the call from ITV. We are really proud of our clothing and it was great to know that we were on their radar for such a popular, prime-time show. We know the kit will be keeping the skaters warm and cosy whilst training on the ice. The colours and prints are quite distinctive so it’s been fun to spot them on the show.” Bamboo has natural benefits that make it ideal for this kind of high impact activity. It is amazingly soft; warm and breathable thanks to smooth hollow microfibres; it absorbs moisture away from the skin keeping you drier; it is also anti-bacterial so won’t smell. And, as an added bonus, bamboo is an environmentally sustainable crop. As is so often the case, once the clothing has been tried, there’s no turning back. Professional skater, Mark Henretty, tweeted: “It’s the best. I need to spread the love about how perfect your gear is for skating.” Fellow pro, Vanessa Bauer, added: “Love the leggings. They are so comfy.” Whilst Alex Murphy commented on her leggings: “I love them. Wait until you see them on the big screen.”

Trevi House: 25 years of giving children back their mums By Karen Pilkington

A packed crowd attended the public screening of the recent BBC Panorama programme highlighting the work of Trevi House in Plymouth, and the journey of two of the mums that lived there in particular.

CLAIM UP TO £100 CASHBACK ON SELECTED

Trevi House will be familiar to many Plymothians, especially those who have found that life’s difficulties can sometimes spiral out of control. Celebrating 25 years supporting families, it was originally founded in 1993 by the late Roma French, mother of Dawn French, and remains the only service of its kind in the UK. Trevi’s vision is that children with mums who have a drug or alcohol addiction can be given a chance to remain together. Each mother follows a personalised rehabilitation plan which involves individual and group therapy, detox from medication and close liaison with social services.

BOSCH APPLIANCES

CLAIM £70 CASH BACK

They have launched the Change a Child’s Life Campaign to highlight the fact that there are 73,000 children in care right now, with the use of drugs and alcohol involved in two thirds of applications. Evidence shows that where possible, maintaining a family relationship and avoiding care leads to better chances for both mother and the baby later in life. 73% of recovering addicts are likely to succeed if they can keep their children.

Trevi’s belief is that mothers should be given the support to address the root cause of their addiction whilst being given the opportunity to bond with and care for their child, so they can break the cycle of pain, grief and separation that so often is already part of their story.

Despite having the space for 10 placements, Trevi is usually only half full as cash strapped councils struggle to find funding to offer this support. However, as Hannah Stead, CEO of Trevi House, explains, “Our six month placement is much cheaper than the hundreds of thousands of pounds required to keep a child in care, so this is a long-term investment that could significantly reduce expenditure. The programme is tough; however, over the last five years, around 60% of families have completed the programme and left Trevi House together, and over the last three years over 95% of women admitted to detox at Trevi have successfully managed to become substance free. As one young mum explained, “Wanting a different life for my kids has driven me to relinquish my old life, helping me overcome my resistance to change.” Another said, “There are reasons behind why it happened.” Most women arrive at Trevi having been victims of abuse and/or domestic violence. Many struggle to live with

CLAIM £50 CASH BACK feelings of guilt and shame at having children taken into care in the past. Indeed, repeated removal of children puts a huge strain on care services, affecting over 11,000 mothers in the UK between 2007 and 2014. Arriving at Trevi is seen by both mothers, staff and social services as a last chance to stem the flow of devastation this brings, so the stakes are very high. Trevi is committed to putting itself forward as a viable option to local councils to offer long lasting solutions, and, as a charity in its own right, is looking for donations to change a child’s life.

Just £5 could buy a comfort blanket for baby to cuddle at night, £100 could help a family set up home when they leave Trevi House together. Donations can be made by texting TREV11 £5 to 70070 or by emailing supportus@trevihouse.org or calling 01752 255758.

Plymouth prepares to regenerate – powered by its people Among those present will be some of the 1,600 voluntary and community organisations that POP+ supports, covering everything from mental health to youth; the environmental to criminal justice and sport to the creative industries.

A day-long event is being held on March 15 organised by POP+ (the Plymouth Octopus Project), to galvanise people and let them have a say in how to spend £1.3 million pounds, from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, transforming the city.

“We have got the energy, the money and the commitment to make a real difference to people in Plymouth,” said Jacky. “We want to get good ideas off the ground to make daily life better for everyone. But what we need, more than

POP+ is encouraging residents, volunteers and communities across the city to stand up, shout out and transform the places where they live.

Neighbourhood kitchens, urban farms and community start-ups could soon be a familiar site across the city as part of a radical social change programme that is being driven by the people of Plymouth for the people of Plymouth.

A similar project recently launched in Dagenham generated ideas for monthly community suppers; a warehouse furnished for new businesses to test their ideas; a shop for new businesses to trade without risk and repair cafes where tools and skills can be shared. It’s these innovative ideas, says Jacky Clift, chief executive of POP+, that can transform communities and individuals.

anything, is for people to come and tell us what they want.” The day of action at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, will feature workshops and speakers from some of the country’s most respected – and radical – social change initiatives who believe that Plymouth is capable, and ready, for a regeneration powered by its own people. Gone are the days when communities are told what is good for them, according to Jacky. “We passionately believe that the people who best know what they need, are the people themselves.”

“Plymouth is the UK’s first Social Enterprise City and is full of community business ideas. This programme presents a great opportunity to turn these ideas into reality so we can create an economy that benefits everyone in Plymouth.” Plymouth has seen many periods of development and redevelopment over the centuries but this may well be the first time that it has been designed and driven by its residents.

Water, water...everywhere! Free water refills that limit the need for single use plastic bottles are going to be available in Plymouth long before the recently announced target of 2021 - in fact, they already are. In an initiative led by Transition Plymouth, and as part of Environment Plymouth’s soon-to-be- launched Plastic Free Plymouth Sound campaign, Plymouth has been included in the Refill Devon project supported by Recycle Devon. Soon, outlets across the Plymouth Waterfront area will be taking part in the scheme, supported by the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership Business Improvement District.

A spokesperson for the campaign said: “We are delighted to be able to take the first steps towards limiting unnecessary plastic use in this way. Free refills are already available from Drake’s Kitchen at the University and both Rockfish at Sutton Harbour and Koffiehuis on the Barbican but, very soon, there will be lots more outlets. We are particularly grateful to the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership who will be encouraging their members to make these free refills available to locals and visitors alike.” Sarah Gibson, chief executive of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership said: “When we learned of the scheme we were keen to act in support of Transition Plymouth and their goals to roll the Refill Devon initiative

out across Plymouth’s Waterfront area. Rockfish and Koffiehuis are the first to offer free water refills, and we hope with the Waterfront BID’s encouragement, more premises across the Waterfront will get on board with the free service.” Mitch Tonks, restaurateur and food writer who runs the Rockfish restaurants, said: “We think it’s the right thing to do to reduce the use of plastics in our business and support initiatives that work towards a better solution and we’re proactively working with suppliers to reduce the amount they use. “As well as supporting Refill Devon, we’re also installing taps outside our restaurants so that people can use refillable bottles for drinking water rather than use a

single use bottle. Plymouth has always championed sustainability, with research at the NMA, the university, Food Plymouth and sustainable cities organisation and, as a major city in Devon it can and does lead the way.” The subject of significant concern and recent publicity through the BBC’s Blue Planet II series, plastic waste is emerging as one of the biggest threats to our local and global environment. Plymouth’s status as Britain’s Ocean City and calls for the designation of a National Marine Park all add to the importance of a local campaign. Becoming part of Refill Devon is the first step towards Plymouth’s aim of becoming the UK’s first Plastic Free Coastline accredited city.

Representatives from Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, Transition Plymouth, Rockfish and other outlets gather together to celebrate Plymouth’s role in the Refill Devon campaign Opening ceremony (left to right): Libraries Service Manager Mandy Macdonald, Council Leader and local ward Councillor Ian Bowyer, Cabinet Member for Culture Councillor Glenn Jordan and local ward councillor Lynda Bowyer opening the new-look Crownhill Library

New-look Crownhill Library now open Crownhill Library has re-opened today following a three-week refurbishment. It’s the third to undergo an upgrade as part of the Council’s Plan for Libraries, with Devonport and Southway having been refurbished in the autumn. It now boasts a brand new meeting room, complete with audio visual equipment, twice as many computers and a refreshed book stock. External and internal signage, including shelf guiding, have also been improved. Council Leader and local ward councillor Ian Bowyer said: “Investing in improvements at Crownhill, Devonport and Southway libraries and extending their opening hours makes it easier for people to enjoy the wide range of services they offer. It also means they can host a wider range of activities and enables us to start delivering on the proposals set out in the Plan for Libraries.” The Plan for Libraries sets out the steps the Council will take over the next three years to ‘deliver modern services that inspire learning and creativity, improve health and wellbeing and support digital inclusion’. The investment at Crownhill, Devonport and Southway libraries completes the initial phase of the plan, with the next exciting step being the demolition and rebuild of the library in St Budeaux. More details on this will be announced in the coming weeks. For more information about the Plan for Libraries visit www.plymouth.gov.uk/libraries/planlibraries. Research reveals big economic benefits of Mayflower 400 New research commissioned by Mayflower 400 reveals strong economic potential presented by the anniversary in 2020. On behalf of Mayflower 400, the official national and international visitor programme formed to lead the 400th anniversary commemorations in 2020, Destination Plymouth commissioned research in the United States to evaluate the commercial and investment potential of the iconic anniversary. Of over 25 million descendants worldwide from the 102 passengers and crew on board the Mayflower ship, over 10 million are US citizens. It is estimated the national Mayflower programme will drive growth in the UK visitor economy of over 1.4 million visitors during the commemoration year with an economic impact in excess of £76 million in turn creating around 2,000 jobs. The research was commissioned as a benchmark study to be shared with stakeholders and businesses in England and the Netherlands encouraging them to capitalise on tourist visits from the US associated with, or inspired by, Mayflower 400 and maximise opportunities the anniversary will generate during this crucial countdown period to 2020.

The aim of the study was to determine the potential visitor market size and profile of visitors, and motivations for visits during, and as a result of, the Mayflower anniversary. Nearly 5,000 surveys were completed by a US general panel which consisted of US adult citizens who have lived in the US for at least 12 months and taken an international holiday within the past three years, and the society members panel which consisted of members of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and General Society of Mayflower Descendants. The survey found that over half of all respondents had visited England in the past for leisure purposes highlighting the destination’s need to diversify tourism products and offer new attractions and experiences, beyond the obvious highlights of a first time visit, to entice US travellers to return for the commemorations. Surprisingly, 80% of respondents were not aware of the forthcoming 400th Mayflower anniversary, however, following the anniversary being highlighted to respondents during the survey, 12% of the US panel population were ‘very likely’ to visit England in 2020 with a further 36% classified as ‘likely’ to visit. In terms of where they would like to visit, half of the ‘hot prospects’ indicated they would

wish to make a specific visit to Plymouth, Leiden, Boston and Southampton. Meanwhile, Plymouth ranked second after London for locations where the Hot Prospects would like to stay during the commemorations.

Argyle Community Trust appointed sport coordinator for Mayflower 400 sport and physical activity within the city through existing sports networks.

2020 marks the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage, one of the most influential journeys in global history and a defining moment in the shared history of Britain, the US, the Native American Nation and the Netherlands.

Argyle Community Trust have been appointed as Plymouth’s coordinator for sport and physical activity for the city’s Mayflower 400 commemorations in the lead-up to 2020.

The anniversary provides a special opportunity to inspire people across our nations with the stories of that iconic voyage, exploring themes of migration, tolerance, freedom and democracy that have such contemporary relevance.

Mayflower 400 marks the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims sailing from Plymouth to America in 1620 and an incredible range of activity will be hosted across the city to commemorate this significant historical event.

An exciting national and international programme, the Mayflower 400 commemorations will highlight the significance of the special relationship between our nations; transform communities, provide cultural, business and visitor links; explore the different sides of the story; and celebrate the people and places of this epic pioneering tale.

Charles Hackett, chief executive of Mayflower 400, said: “The Mayflower 400 programme in Plymouth is really starting to come together across different sectors. I’m excited that Argyle Community Trust are coming on board to bring together and encourage involvement from the wide range of sports organisations that we have in the city.

Sport will be a key element of the programme, combining headline events with opportunities for grass roots clubs and the general public to get involved.

“Their experience of delivering inclusive activity makes them a great fit with Mayflower’s goal of giving everyone the opportunity to get involved.”

Mark Lovell, head of community at Argyle Community Trust, said: “We are delighted to be chosen as the lead organisation to help deliver the Mayflower 400 sport programme.

Argyle Community Trust are already contacting sporting organisations to discuss how they can get on board for 2020. For more information contact Dan Hart, social inclusion manger: Dan.Hart@ pafc.co.uk.

Plymouth is one of 11 UK Mayflower 400 Compact partner destinations within the Mayflower 400 programme, which also includes Dartmouth. For more information visit www.mayflower400uk.org

“The opportunity to be involved in such a prestigious event is fantastic and we look forward to working with as many organisations, clubs and individuals as we possibly can to grow participation in

“We aim to ensure there is an offer for everyone in the build up to Mayflower 400 and the commemorations.”

Hopefully, the autumn and winter seasons allowed for the interior jobs around the house to be handled. For the spring, touching up the home’s exterior should be on the menu. Adding a new coat of paint is one of those jobs which can brighten up the spirits of any homeowner. Even

if a jacket is still required, breathing that fresh spring air and becoming active once again will cure the remaining winter blues. Once a new coat of paint has dried, spring can officially begin.

Landscaping and garden work Another job which naturally falls into the springtime category is landscaping work. It won’t be unusual to find patches of grass in dire need of attention after being subjected to the rigours of the last winter. Once some new patches of grass are installed and the lawn starts looking to be in good shape, think about adding some colour to the scene. New flowers and bushes create an entirely different feeling around the house. It’s one of those things which can’t be explained, yet whenever such an effort is made, it will be greatly appreciated by everyone at home. Green thumb or not, these tasks are never too much for a homeowner to learn about.

Last-minute jobs in anticipation of a property sale

If the time has finally come to sell the house and start over somewhere else, spring is a good time to do it. Before the summer holiday season hits and after winter is making every home look a little more tired, springtime represents a real change to home EVG shoppers. BETTER BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS

Give your garden a once over It’s important to show your outside space some love too, especially as you’ll be planning to spend more time there as the weather improves. Give your flowerbeds and borders a good tidy up... trim back overgrown bushes, plants, hedges and trees, and dig out anything that’s on its last legs. Spring is also a good time to get some new plants and shrubs into the garden ready for summer. All your existing plants will bloom back to life as the season changes, but a few new additions will give you something fresh to enjoy. Gladioli and small evergreens are ideal to pop in your garden in spring, while Dahlias are perfect for pots on the patio. Unfortunately weeds also love the better conditions, so make sure you dig them all out. You may be unhappy to hear it’s also time to start mowing your lawns again too. Get on top of these particular jobs early and it’ll be easier to maintain a glorious garden throughout the warmer months.

Finish those little jobs Finally make sure all those little DIY jobs are finished. Fix broken handles and hinges, oil squeaking doors and sort out any old grouting in showers and bathrooms. Also, don’t forget to clear your gutters and drains of leaves and repaint or mend any drainpipes that are looking a bit worse for wear.

New name, new local editions, same trusted community newspaper The Plymouth Chronicle is the new name for the Plymouth Shopper!

affordable level within each weekly edition, with discounts for booking more than one edition and for booking over a series of months.

Between 2001 and 2017, the Plymouth Shopper grew from one local monthly edition in Peverell, to seven local editions totalling 64,000 copies.

With the Plymouth Chronicle, advertisers have the best of all worlds – geographically targeted, local choice in one edition; or multiple editions leading to coverage of the vast majority of the city – nobody offers business and charity advertisers more than the Plymouth Chronicle.

Now, in line with response from local communities and businesses, it’s grown again… and we’ve changed our name!

For more information about the new publication visit www. cornerstonevision.com or for details of advertising opportunities call the Chronicle sales team on 01752 225623.

From April, there will be four hyper local community newspapers each month, delivered to a total of 90,000 homes throughout Plymouth. Each separate edition comes under the new name of the Plymouth Chronicle because they chronicle the community news stories and local life of four separate areas of the city. The weekly editions are: WEEK 1: PLYMPTON & PLYMSTOCK - 21,400 copies covering Woodford, Plympton St Mary & St Maurice, Chaddlewood, Langage, Elburton, Plymstock, Hooe, Turnchapel, Staddiscombe, Oreston, Pomphlett and Billacombe

A total of 60 customised and interactive robots formed an immersive art installation, each representing an individual child in care. Visitors read stories to the robots and donated hugs through interactive technology. The young people wanted audiences to know that children in care are all individuals with different stories, hopes, dreams and needs. I.AM.NOT.A.ROBOT, by Plymouth City Council has been named Best Local Authority Arts Initiative in the awards which celebrate the work of councils, councillors and council officers who have overcome financial challenges to ensure the arts stay at the centre of community life.

They worked with professional artists and University students over the holidays to train as artists and curators, and to develop their ideas for the show. The project is a partnership between the council, local arts charity Effervescent, The Big Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and University of Plymouth.

For the first time, people living north of the A38 Parkway will have their own community newspaper, as we take the trusted local service of the Shopper and make it more widely available in the four editions of the Plymouth Chronicle.

Couple’s fund raising efforts in memory of Ava will help expectant mums In a few months’ time, thanks to the hard work and dedication of a local couple, pregnant ladies in Plymouth and the surrounding areas will soon be given a potentially life-saving wallet at their booking in appointment - thanks to the hard work and dedication of a local couple. The wallets will not only protect their maternity notes wherever they go; they will also display important information and advice regarding mum’s health, and that of her baby’s. Sophia and Gareth Williams, from Liskeard, have been working closely with Derriford’s maternity staff to introduce the new wallets, which have been purchased through funds raised by the couple in memory of their daughter, Ava Hollie Williams, who was stillborn on the day before her due date in July 2016. In her memory, Ava’s family have been working extremely hard to raise as much money as possible through Ava’s Fund and have been working with a registered charity, Towards Tomorrow Together (charity number 1151022), to raise awareness of and reduce stillbirth rates across South West England. The couple have used funds to provide specialist bereavement care and stillbirth prevention training to staff at Derriford Hospital. The fund has also enabled them to purchase 10,000 wallets which will cover a twoyear period, at a cost of £7,800.

Wallets display colourful, easy to understand key health information on both sides, to support women right through their pregnancy, which is why they will be given to them at their booking in appointment. “It is estimated that 50% of stillbirths in the UK could be prevented through better care, education and awareness,” explained Sophia. “The introduction of the wallets – a big change for pregnant ladies – has proven to reduce stillbirth rates elsewhere in the country. It’s going to make a positive difference locally. “What we do is because of the love we have for our daughter and the passion which drives us to try and prevent the preventable from happening. “It wasn’t until Ava was stillborn that we realised that this can happen to anybody. I’d had a perfect pregnancy up until those final few weeks when her movements changed and slowed down. “In addition to raising awareness of and reducing stillbirth rates, we will also do all we can to support those who lose a baby at any gestation. We will be there to listen, care, comfort and point people in the direction of others who may be able to help.” The wallets have been ordered and the couple will officially hand them over to Sue Wilkins, director of Midwifery at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, in the near future.

EXPERIENCE THE STATIONS OF THE Lions way of working CROSS AT DEVONPORT LIVE CAFÉ

The Lions Club of Plymouth are members of Lions Clubs International and part of a global network of 1.4 million volunteers.

Michael Shaw, the Minister of Devonport Baptist Church had the idea for an Arts Exhibition based on the Easter story back in 2016.

When a humanitarian crisis strikes, Lions Clubs International Foundation work with and are guided by their own Lions members who are ordinary people present on the ground. As the world’s largest voluntary, non-governmental organisation, Lions volunteers fundraise in their own local communities with every penny raised being used to help those in need.

He based the exhibition around the 14 Stations of the Cross, which to the uninitiated are a series of fourteen pictures or carvings representing successive incidents during Jesus’s progress from his condemnation by Pilate to his crucifixion and burial. Traditionally the Church has used these since it’s beginnings as a way of remembering and considering exactly what happened to Jesus and why.

The Lions don’t spend money on fancy fundraising campaigns, and all administration and marketing costs are funded by members’ subs.

Michael’s idea was to take these 14 shapshots of the story of Jesus and bring them into the public domain, so that anyone could consider, without having to go inside a church building. Using a combination of professional and amateur artists, the paintings are new each time the exhibition is put on, giving visitors a fresh, and very personal take on the artists’ intrepretations. Artists have come from all walks of life, including members of St Michaels and St Barnabas’ Church of England, Methodists from Stoke Christian Centre and

residents of the Salvation Army’s Lifehouse – a truly ecumenical affair.

26 and will continue throughout Easter. Entry is free of charge.

As before the exhibition this year will be hung in the Art Space of Devonport Live Café in New George Street. It will be open from 9am to 4pm from March

The Art Space offers quiet contemplation, with a café next door for before or after a visit for a welcome warm drink, or more substantial meals.

Lions Clubs of the British Isles are grateful for the public support, which enables them to commit to solving longterm problems through its presence in local communities throughout the world. The Lions Club of Plymouth supports a range of good causes and local projects where volunteers can get involved. Anyone interested should contact 01752 932479.

School’s first student marks key construction milestone The very first student to apply for a place at Plymouth’s newest secondary school was a guest of honour at a bolt-tightening ceremony to mark a significant milestone in the construction of the school. Caitlin Owen started in Year 9 when Scott Medical and Healthcare College opened at its temporary site in September 2017 and she attended with fellow Year 9 Alex Stryjakiewicz and Sixth Form students Owen Kilcommons and Marsha Johnson. Work on Scott’s new £5m building in Stoke – led by Kier Construction – began last summer and the bolt tightening ceremony recently marked the completion of the steel structure. “It was nice to be part of it and see how the building is getting on,” said Caitlin, who is planning to be paediatric nurse or midwife. “I”m very glad I moved to Scott College and I can’t wait to start lessons in our brand new school.” The new small, state school, which specialises in training the healthcare professionals of the future, welcomed 84 students into its first ever Year 9 last year as well as more than 60 Year 12 students. Central to the vision for the school - which offers a range of academic, vocational and professional qualifications - is its partnership with a number of local healthcare educators and practitioners who have been key in formulating its unique and innovative curriculum. The school’s partners – Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, Livewell Southwest, Plymouth University’s Faculty of Health and Human Sciences and the Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry – are providing work placements as well as masterclasses for students. “We are really looking forward to being in our new building which the Kier team is constructing at an incredible rate,” said headteacher Martyn Cox “Our students can’t wait to start learning in their purposebuilt health and social care rooms and medical and

dentistry consulting rooms. “It’s been a pleasure to welcome students, partners and the construction team to the site to celebrate this important moment in the school’s progress,” he said. Also present at the bolt tightening was Professor Greg Dix, chief nurse and operating officer at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, who said he was ‘absolutely delighted’ to be marking the progress of the building which is right next door to its sponsor school Stoke Damerel Community College on Somerset Place. “It’s amazing to think that four years ago this school was only an idea on paper so to be here today is fantastic,” said Prof Dix, who is also chair of governors at Scott College. “It’s also testament to headteacher Martyn Cox’s passion and enthusiasm that it is now a reality and already proving so popular with a waiting list in the first Year 9.” Sharon Jones, associate head of School of Nursing and Midwifery Plymouth University, said: “We are delighted to be work in partnership with Scott College and look forward to welcoming future students both within nursing and midwifery and other health professions.” Brian Rice, operations director for Kier Construction, said: “It is fantastic to see the building taking shape and so many people gathered to celebrate this milestone in construction. We look forward to welcoming the first students into this prestigious building in September.” Schools like Scott College are state schools which are more like workplaces with a longer school day and classroom teaching combined with work placements. At first, students carry out work experience from half a day to a full day each week.

Caitlin Owen (centre) the first student to apply for Scott College tightens the final bolt with (from l to r) Brian Rice, operations director Kier Construction, Martyn Cox, headteacher Scott College, and Paul Fletcher, site manager Kier Construction

SITE WORKER HAS SPECIAL CONNECTION TO PROJECT It’s not every day you build a £5m school next door to your old school but Dan Harris, assistant site manager for Kier Construction, is doing just that. Dan is an ex-student of Scott’s sponsor school Stoke Damerel Community College (SDCC) and is part of the team building the new school which is due to open in September.

Ajay Sharma from Kensington Taylor Architects who designed the new school – which admits pupils aged between 13 and 19 – said it was a ‘privilege’ to be part After leaving Stoke Damerel in 2008 he completed a of the project team delivering ‘this exceptional building, supporting educational development for the 21st century’. carpentry apprenticeship before working his way up to his current assistant site manager role with Kier For more information and how to apply go to www. Construction. scottcollege.co.uk

“It’s very satisfying to think a new generation of students will be learning in such an exciting building which I’ve been so involved in delivering,” said Dan. “Especially when it’s next door to the school I attended. It’s been good seeing lots of familiar faces ‚ I really enjoyed my time at SDCC and while I’m on the Scott site I’ve also become involved in careers initiatives at SDCC with students looking to get into construction. “It’s a privilege to be able promote the construction industry, the many career paths it offers and to share what I’ve learned and the opportunities I’ve been lucky enough to have in my career so far.”

KEEP FIT, EARN MONEY Earn a little extra income every month and keep fit at the same time! Cornerstone Vision has a superb reputation for leaflet distribution throughout Plymouth and the surrounding areas. We are seeking people who can commit to delivering excellent service as part of our high quality team.

Part time, self employed Leaflet Distributors wanted in this area by Cornerstone Vision, Plymouth's longest established independent Leaflet Distribution company. Reasonable rates of pay. Adult distributors only. All work back-checked.

THE GREAT STORIES BEHIND OUR DISTRIBUTION TEAM: Everyone has different motivation to take on a round, one lady has used the income to pay for her teenage son’s mobile premiums, rugby kit and downhill mountain bike. As this includes exercise, it has been a better family solution than the usual withdrawals from bank of Mum and Dad

A mum who worked in a school, delivered every month for 10+ years, at the same time took a part time university degree and recently achieved a promotion at her school! We are proud and celebrate like it is a member of our own family!

A young man, in his early 20’s, was living a nocturnal ‘computer gaming’ lifestyle - rising at 2pm onwards, not really attempting to find work. He took on several rounds, after prompting from his Grandfather, came off allowances, and began to earn and get fitter. His ‘shoulders went back’, his self-esteem rose and he has now moved on because he found a full time job.

A retiree who was looking for some top up income to his pension has been delivering leaflets for a few hours a day. He lost weight, his knees (once a cause for concern) are significantly better, and he has remarked how he feels useful and valued again.

New Lord Mayor Designate announced

MONEY MA££ERS with STEVE CAREY

2018 - Back to normal? I wonder how you are feeling about 2018? What’s coming our way?

Lord Mayor Designate Cllr Sam Davey is congratulated by the current Lord Mayor Cllr Wendy Foster

The new Lord Mayor Designate for 2018/19 has been announced for Plymouth. Councillor Sam Davey has been Stoke ward councillor since 2012 and was Deputy Lord Mayor in 2016/17. Originally from Sunderland, where he served as a Police Constable in the Northumbria Police Force and a deck officer in the Merchant Navy, Councillor Davey moved to Plymouth in 1979 to attend the School of Maritime Studies. He liked Plymouth so much that he decided to settle here, working at the Marine Biological Association, Blue Circle Cement, the Child Support Agency and finally at the Faculty of Art at Plymouth University before retiring in 2014. His daughter Bethan Davey will be the Lady Mayoress for the year. The 26-year-old has a BA in sports development and coaching and her career includes being a play ranger, a residential house tutor, hockey coach at

Plymouth College and a deputy manager at Dawlish Leisure Centre. Councillor Davey said: “As an ‘adopted’ Plymothian, I am honoured and proud to be asked to be the next Lord Mayor. It was my maritime connection which first brought me to Britain’s Ocean City and I realised very quickly that it was the place I wanted to live in and raise a family. “I am looking forward to representing this great city and meeting its brilliant people; in particular those unsung heroes who work in or support the large number of voluntary organisations and charity groups; those who contribute to culture and sport across the city; and those who look after the health, wellbeing and safety of us all.” Current Lord Mayor Councillor Wendy Foster said: “Being Lord Mayor is an honour and a privilege and I wish Councillor Sam Davey all the best for when he takes on the new role.” Councillor Sam Davey will take over as Lord Mayor from Councillor Wendy Foster in May 2018.

Interest rates are on the way up, inflation is forecast to fall as the ‘Brexit effect’ falls out of the figures, and pay rises are predicted to be around 3% this year. It sounds as if we are heading into a golden economic age, (well, perhaps not a golden age, but certainly a better place than recent years). There are dangers in being overoptimistic, and I want to share some techniques that will stop us overstretching our finances.

as it allows you to daydream about what you’d like to see in your future. For many of us, that may mean paying down more of our historic debt, leftover from the great crash. For others, it may result in a list of home improvements, consumer product replacements or a long-deferred holiday.

• Whatever it is, revise your family budget and set a realistic idea of how much extra you may receive. • Then, pop your bubble by looking at your current expenditure and allowing for anticipated increases in those costs. (I’ve read reports of big increases in Council Tax for example).

affordable.

• Whatever is left, is what you can afford.

Offers are not usually a ‘once-in-alifetime’ thing. Sales come around again, and this year’s ‘must have’ soon becomes last season’s thing.

You will have a list of priorities and an amount you can afford to spend. Then the fun begins as you research ways to cut the price of the top priorities, so you can afford more of what’s on your list.

Conclusion The future is brighter for many people than it has been for a long time, but don’t be suckered into taking on more debt for things you cannot afford.

I feel like a broken record, but there’s no substitute for careful planning and budgeting. It becomes even more critical if you are optimistic, because we are much more effective at convincing ourselves we can afford it (whatever “it” may be).

But remember…..

I’m not saying don’t buy, just make sure you can afford it before you do.

Making plans

If you can’t afford things now, use the list as a motivator to make any practical changes so they become

Where’s the danger? An increase in confidence makes us far more likely to take on additional commitments. The expectation of increased income, or an easier life, makes us more susceptible to ‘special’ offers, limited time discounts and interest free credit deals. How to avoid it

• Make a list of your priorities for spending it. This can be fun,

If you can’t afford everything on your list, or indeed any of it, right now, don’t buy it. You’ll just store up trouble for yourself, and any joy you feel at your new acquisition will soon be replaced by the worry of having to pay for it.

Enjoy 2018, whether you can buy more, or not. This year is truly a ‘once-in-a-lifetime” experience. Steve Carey, Numbers UK Ltd 01752 226084 www.numbersukltd.com

Take your life back

Helping people with long term health issues to improve their quality of life

Improving Lives Plymouth run self-management short courses that provide tools for people to better manage their long-term health problems and to achieve a better quality of life. A course participant, wrote to her GP: “I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about the course that I have been on for the past six weeks. It’s called Long-term Condition Self-Management. “The course is run by two volunteers, both of whom are battling their own illnesses and are former group members. I must admit that at first, I was sceptical, anxious, worried, and not sure what to expect from the course, but I have been pleasantly surprised. There are 8 members who each suffer but all have a cheery disposition and support one another. “I can’t praise the staff enough, they put me at ease and welcomed me and have helped me to realise that although I suffer pain & discomfort, I am depressed and suffer from anxiety, that there is help out there. There are ways of managing pain, that is what this group has taught me, it has also made me aware that I am not alone in my daily struggle. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who suffers a long-term condition and is perhaps feeling isolated and in need of some support. “This course has also helped me to believe that I too could give back to society by perhaps volunteering to help others.”

• Self confidence

Topics covered on the course include:

• Control of their symptoms and condition

• Pain and fatigue management

• Feeling of well-being

• Problem Solving

• Ability to cope better with their health and their lives

• Dealing with difficult emotions • Relaxation techniques

• Their belief that they CAN DO something to change their health behaviour • Exercise and relaxation

• Positive thinking • Healthy eating and physical activity Jan said: “We get very positive feedback from most of our course participants. Its only a small course for a few hours once a week, for six weeks, but with a big impact, it’s no exaggeration to say many find it life changing. They report an increase in:

Babcock win top award from the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights

Success in the prestigious Best Company category follows on from an already impressive track record for Babcock’s apprentices, with talented individuals, picking up the WCoS’s top prize, The Queen’s Silver Medal, five times over the last decade. Last year, following rigorous application processes, hundreds of new apprentices joined Babcock’s highly acclaimed schemes in a variety of roles, including; engineers, welders, fabricators, naval architects and in supply chain management. Babcock director for HR, Jonathan Whitworth said: “I’m delighted that our Devonport Apprenticeship Scheme has won this year’s Best Company Award from the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights.

Spring is nearly here and new beginnings are all around us...

30 years ago, I began my own ‘new beginning’ on a journey into the Christian faith, which started, of all places, on Drake’s Island. Spring 1988 saw me taken on as a maintenance assistant, working Ian Pilkington alongside a great bunch of dedicated people who provided charity-led outdoor activity weeks for children from schools across the country. This healthy lifestyle, living and working in community, gave me space and grace to reconsider where my life was heading, and to make some decisions about changing course for the better. There’s a longer back-story to this, suffice to say that starting in Spring 1988 I bought my first ever bible, which I read avidly back on the Island; I began praying, trying to remember the Lord’s prayer and developing a ‘conversation with God’ from there. I travelled from a dark, hopeless place, with nothing to look forward to and having just about ruined my life by the age of 24, into a life that has not always been a bed of roses but which

Babcock International has won this year’s Worshipful Company of Shipwright’s (WCoS) Best Company award. The accolade was presented to Babcock Devonport, at a recent award ceremony, in recognition of managing the best apprenticeship scheme for engineers, and for its commitment to improving marine engineering apprenticeships.

Experience

Spring is just around the corner – there’s green shoots and daffodils emerging everywhere, and buds are swelling on trees and bushes with the promise of warmer, brighter days to come. I love this hopeful time of year.

Jan White, the course co-ordinator said: “We know that for many people their longterm conditions can control them, leading their activities and quality of life being much impaired. We aim to give them back control, with tools to manage their condition well. Our trained volunteer tutors have been through the health system themselves and have long-term health-conditions. That peer support and understanding is an important part of what we do.”

“By investing in high quality apprenticeships Babcock is safeguarding the 700-year-old Worshipful Company’s aim of protecting the quality of marine engineering by producing the best apprentices while also promoting and supporting education and youth development in the maritime and marine sectors.” The Silver Medal competition was instituted by His Majesty King George VI, Permanent Master of the Shipwrights’ Company in 1944, to be awarded to the Shipyard Apprentice of the Year. has been increasingly fulfilling and purposeful. Actually, the bed of roses analogy does fit, because as Chris Cole says sometimes we need the fertiliser of life’s tough bits to help the beauty of God in us to grow! Everyone’s story, and journey, is different. But we all need new beginnings now and then. We all need the refreshing of forgiveness when we’ve hurt others, we all need help to rebuild things we’ve broken through our own actions and just cannot put right on our own. For me, God has consistently proven himself to be not only the one who helps me out of trouble, but the one who shows me where I’m causing it – thankfully he does so with grace and always with the offer of help to change for the better. Each time it’s like the new beginning of Spring, as another broken area of life is reclaimed by love and good things start to grow. Our radio programmes have a fresh sound with songs that relate to real life, yet are full of hope – if you’ve not listened yet, give it a try on 96.3fm or online (see below). The Cross Rhythms volunteer team is looking forward to being in next month’s brand new Plymouth Chronicle, another ‘new beginning of Spring’ that will be delivered to more communities in Plymouth – see you there!
