Hello
and welcome... ...to the Easter edition of Love Saltash At long last the weather seems to have taken a turn for the better and we are hopeful of sunnier days to come. Obviously our world is far from out of the storms that have gripped it in recent months, with the Health Pandemic being the most severe of a generation.
We want to offer our warmest thoughts and prayers for you and your loved ones to keep well. We were delighted with the responses to our recent survey, which are still coming in. We have published some interim results this month and are following up on those of you who have asked to

suspended fundraising for the remainder of 2020. They believe it is best to await the results of the consultation process and the review of Health Services in SE Cornwall before holding more events. A38 from Carkeel to Trerulefoot as a RIS 3 (Road Improvement Strategy) pipeline scheme. Further announcements from Cornwall Council heralded its inclusion as a major road upgrade. James Millidge, Chair of Safe38 said, “The budget announcement brought some fantastic news for SE Cornwall and we’re absolutely thrilled. For the last two years so many local people, campaigners, councillors and MP’s alike, both on a local and regional level have been working really hard to get the Government to recognise the need for upgrading this vitally important part of the Strategic Road Network. They appreciate the help of The Saltash Co-op, Waitrose and Partners, Saltash Ladies’ Choir, The Ashtorre Centre, the Euchre League and all the local firms who have very generously provided raffle prizes. dualling the A38 to bypass villages like Tideford and Landrake is just the first step of a very long process. We will continue to campaign to get this essential scheme developed and funded and ultimately delivered for SE Cornwall. “We are also working alongside Highways England and Cornwall Council to see smaller scale safety measures put in place. The funding that is available for these interventions is still not clear and I would call upon Highways England to ensure that these are made an absolute priority in the short term as they will result in lives being saved.”

QUARANTINE SUPPORT Ten years ago it was Swine Flu - back then we had “Flu Friends” volunteers to help those who had noone else to turn to. So Volunteer Cornwall are putting out a call again for people to act as “Flu Friends” to support others who have no-one else to turn to during the coronavirus pandemic. Imagine having to self-isolate when you have no friends or family you can turn to for help and support. No-one to ensure you have basic supplies like milk and bread, no-one to ensure you get your medication, no-one to talk to for seven days! We don’t think the good people of Saltash will let that happen and we are looking for people to come forward to support older and vulnerable residents in their community. There are sensible steps you can take to minimise the risk to yourself and others whilst acting as a “Flu Friend” to help. Volunteer Cornwall will provide you with advice, support and a basic induction to help you stay safe. They have already had a fantastic response to the call to action, with many people getting in touch and sharing their community spirit as volunteers to help those in need. If you think you could help please get in touch by calling 01872 266988 or email mid@ volunteercornwall.org.uk
FIVE THINGS YOU CAN
DO ABOUT COVID-19 1. Think of others, consider your actions & be kind: People in every community will face the challenges of COVID-19 in some way – from needing basic provisions to help while they are unwell.
8
2. Connect and reach out to your neighbours: as self-isolation increases, we need to find new ways to stay connected and check in on one another for our physical and mental wellbeing. Share phone numbers and stay in touch. 3. Make the most of local online groups: Keep up to date, share information and be a positive part of your local community conversations. 4. Support vulnerable or isolated people: different groups in our communities are at increased risk and social isolation and loneliness are key concerns for all ages. There are things you can do like volunteering for local support services or donating to food banks to help. 5. Share accurate information and advice: Support anyone who may be anxious about COVID-19. Sign post them to the correct advice from Public Health England and encourage people to follow the correct hygiene practices.

FUNDING ENCOURAGING
FOR HARMONY REPORTING
At their recent rehearsals GraceNotes Acapella
ladies were delighted when the SHCF turned up with a cheque for £250. The donation from the Trust was towards the harmony group’s coaching retreat where the chorus will receive professional vocal training. This training is a vital part of their singing techniques, and helps support their on-going direction from Heidi Walsh their Director of Music. GraceNotes won the harmony singing class at the recent Saltash Music Speech and Drama Festival and took part in the Festival’s coveted Gala concert. The group is totally self-funded through member donations, and fund raising activities. It is committed to encouraging diversity and youth engagement and has been increasing its youth profile over the last three years to the extent that over 20% of members are now under 25 years of age, the youngest being 12. The SHCF was founded 20 years ago and administer funds available to it, mostly by organising concerts, plays and recitals. The Foundations aims to promote public and private education in the Arts and Science of Musical Education and musicality generally. Further details are available: www.suehcf.org.uk

Safer Cornwall has developed pocket-sized information cards for Cornwall to encourage communities to report their concerns and also to highlight the support available. The cards were initially designed following a request by Cornwall Councillors to encourage communities to report local community safety issues and also to demonstrate the wide range of help that is available. The cards provide information about how to access support for issues such as Anti-Social Behaviour, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence, drugs and alcohol, reporting a crime, Safeguarding, rough sleeping and waste issues. Cards will be available at Saltash Library, or you can download information at safercornwall.co.uk/ support-report/. Safer Cornwall is a statutory partnership of public, voluntary, community and private organisations who come together to do all that they can to make Cornwall’s communities safer. They provide a coordinated response to community safety issues, drawing together all those organisations and people that can make a difference.

Spring Time
It looks like Spring is finally upon us, after so many grey & blustery days. The warmer weather heralds the planting season for gardeners, and in March we held a very successful Seed Swap Day. Gardeners were able to bring along any unwanted seeds and swap away, whilst chatting to fellow gardeners. Surplus seeds were donated to the Saltash Gardening Club, for their veg-growing at Saltash Community School. The Gardening Group volunteers have managed to bring about 1/3 of the plot back into cultivation, but we’re always looking for more volunteers! If you have any seeds lurking in a cupboard or drawer which you’d like to donate, please drop them in to the Community Hub. In March, we also made native wildflower Seedbombs, and gave them away. Look out for wild corners of Saltash bursting into colour in the summer, attracting bees, hoverflies and other pollinators. At this time of year, we need to be mindful of the humble bees. Bees play a huge part in the food chain, and it would be catastrophic if they were to disappear.

Spring Hopper Trips
If you’re new to the town, then come along on some of our organised trips. You’ll make new friends and visit new places. Making the most of the longer days & warmer weather, we have some super trips planned for April, including Topsham market, Mount Edgcumbe, Lost Gardens of Heligan & Mevagissey, and our ever-popular Sunday Lunch trips. The cost of these trips just covers our overheads, and our team of drivers and organisers are all volunteers; so if you’ve enjoyed your day out, please remember to tell the driver - he or she will really appreciate it. The Hoppers are Community Buses, so if you have any ideas for Hopper Trips you’d like us to organise in 2020, we’d love to hear from you.
We have a volunteer vacancy in the Community Hub for someone to join our team for 1 day a week (5 hours); the role will include serving & talking to customers, answering the phone, taking Hopper bookings, and helping to keep literature up to date.
Name That Bus!
In May we’ll be introducing an exciting competition to help name our two Hopper buses, currently (and very unexcitingly) known as H1 and H2. The winning names will be emblazoned proudly on the side of the buses, and the two winners will each receive a Hopper trip for their organisation for up to 16 people. Full details and rules will be announced in the May edition of Love Saltash, so get your thinking hats on, and watch this space! Scouts from Saltash have spent a day of their half-term holiday learning how to fight fires at HMS Raleigh. The group of 16, who belong to the 2nd Saltash scout group were working towards their fire safety activity badge. They were given some practical hands-on experience on the demonstration ground, where new recruits to the Royal Navy learn basic fire-fighting techniques. Scout leader Keith Child said: “We’ve done a little bit towards the badge at scout outdoors and we’ve visited the local fire station, so this is the next part.” HMS Raleigh is the lead school for providing firefighting training to submariners. I think I’ve done quite a bit towards my badge today.” Aged between 10 and 14 years-old, the scouts were also given a brief on the different types of fire and the correct extinguisher to use. Ben Goldsmith, aged 11, added: “We learned about all the hoses and what to put on different fires, for example on an oil fire you have to use foam.” More experienced sailors are trained in dedicated simulators, mocked up to resemble compartments on board ships and submarines. The simulators are gas powered and environmentally compliant. Training is delivered at temperatures up to 300 degrees Celsius; that’s nearly six times hotter than the average temperature of Death Valley in the summer months.

leaping into the air
28
On Saturday February 29 a spectacular fundraising event took place at Adrenalin Quarry in Menheniot. Reverend Iris Bray, Minister of Burraton Methodist Church along with Derek Holley, Steward of Wesley Church, flew through the air on a zip wire travelling at speed over the hills, valleys and water below. The event began at 2pm in very cold, doubtfullooking weather. The two aeronauts were suitably dressed for the occasion but they need not have worried because as they stepped off the platform into the air, bright sun-shine appeared providing a wonderful view as they descended. They were supported by friends from Burraton, Wesley, Blunts and St. Germans churches, Iris’s family and Derek’s family some who had travelled from Berkshire. A huge cheer went up as the
couple set off. Iris was extremely brave as she had a fear of heights and said she felt very shaky as she set off so must be admired for her steeliness on the day. Derek not so much as he was used to rock climbing as a younger man. Iris and husband Graham opened up their Menheniot home to all who had supported the event where delicious home-made cakes and mugs of tea were very welcome. FOOTCARE That’s Just the Ticket for Paula
Paula Morton loves her job as a bus driver, but until she found Foot Solutions her working day was blighted by pain in her feet and legs.
“People may think driving a bus is physically easy,” said Paula, “but it’s more demanding than that. Also, we have to walk fast from one end of Royal Parade to the other to change buses – hard to do with painful feet!” Paula suffered with severe discomfort for years, due to a previous injury and badly fitting shoes. She often had sciatic pain, blisters and knee pain, which not only hurt but also tired her out. That all changed in November 2019 when she booked an appointment for a free foot health assessment at Foot Solutions. “The staff were friendly and easy to talk to. They spent a long time with me, checking everything from how I walked to how my shoes fitted, using their specialist machines to measure pressure and give a clear picture of what was causing my problems. They talked me through it all and then we discussed options to help me.” Foot Solutions’ trained Pedorthist found that Paula actually needed a size 8.5 shoe, where she had always been given a wide size 7 which made things worse. “I chose some really cool boots from their range, and it was a relief as soon as I put them on,” said Paula. She was also assessed for custom inserts and
when they arrived two weeks later the change was remarkable: “It was like coming home and putting my slippers on,” said Paula. “For years comfort just wasn’t possible for me. These boots with the insert are like putting my feet into heaven. Wearing them is a pleasure and I feel much less tired at the end of the day.” Paula also reported that her knee pain and foot pain are a thing of the past, and she no longer suffers from blisters. “My feet don’t hurt from the minute I put them on to the minute I take them off,” she added. “These shoes have really transformed things for me.”
“I’ve referred friends and I would say to anybody with painful feet: you must go to Foot Solutions!” For a free appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the city centre.

Local learners succeed through lifelong learning Each year On Course South West welcomes over 1000 new adult learners, helping people to achieve a variety of personal development goals. Local learners enjoy studying and retraining for lots of different reasons, from taking part in creative activities, to studying for career training, improving their health and wellbeing and much more, and they tell us how much it means to them: “I’m in my mid-fifties with a varied career behind me and wanted to explore options going forward. I am interested in supporting or caring roles but didn’t have qualifications and wasn’t sure which areas interested me most. I do know there’s a skills gap and there are always jobs being advertised. “I had heard that On Course was a professional and trusted place to gain qualifications and training, and it had a good reputation for learners. I work part time on variable shift patterns and as I earn below a certain threshold, courses were free to me. “On Course helped me to decide on an online course, which gave me access to flexible learning that fits around my needs. I live in a village and can’t always commit to a regular class because of my shift patterns and distances involved in attending. I also prefer to challenge myself at my own speed. “Mental health has always interested me. I decided to study a level 2 qualification in Awareness of Mental Health and the course gave me a broader understanding
of the subject and raised my interest even further. I enjoyed reading and learning at a much deeper level than the course required to progress and it was easy to submit the responses online - there’s lot of support from the team. “I decided, after some research and discussion with professional acquaintances, that doing a level 2 course in Counselling would be useful and it would complement what I had learned already. The knowledge that it gave me will be very useful when used in conjunction with the Awareness of Mental Health. I am now looking towards progressing qualifications in mental health to improve my knowledge and work opportunities. “The challenge of learning something new and gaining qualifications has done my confidence the world of good. This was the first formal learning, other than work related courses, that I had undertaken in over three decades. My family framed my certificates because they are so proud of me. Now I have a part time job caring for an elderly person struggling with old age, and my qualifications have helped me to do this professionally.” Some adult training courses are free. You may be fully funded up to and including all level 2 qualifications if you earn less than £16,009.50 pa. To check if you are eligible please contact our Learning Services Team who will also be able to advise you regarding a number of courses that include a reduced fee or concessionary offer for persons who are unemployed and receiving Universal Credit; or are in receipt of certain benefits.”

The Big Saltash Health Conversation
A Community Stakeholder Event was held recently at the China Fleet, hosted by Saltash Health Centre. Neil Parson, Strategic Business Manager of the Health Centre explained, ‘Times are changing, and so is healthcare in Saltash. It’s time for us to get together as a community to learn what the challenges are and share ideas on how we can work together as community to be healthy and happy in the future - and build a local wellbeing plan!’ The meeting was facilitated by Neil and Dawn Bebe,

However, as Dr Birte Morris stated, “Saltash has a great community spirit of cooperation and resilience which could positively influence the state of health in our town if we considered how we could connect together.” Social Prescribing is already in place in both surgeries in Saltash, run by organisations like Age Concern and Pluss. It is proving that a patient can find a great deal of relief from symptons through non medical treatments, as they are given time to discuss their conditions and helped to

Dawn lent her expertise free of charge in partnership with the local GP team (also there on their day off) as she felt the event was pioneering a way forward to reimagine a local healthcare system that could rise above modern challenges that threaten to overwhelm it. Saltash Health Centre has 13,000 patients and a team of just four GPs. There are around 1200 appointments each week. This is now the norm in General Practice. One in Five GPS nationally are approaching retirement and there is a lack of recruitment and retention causing or because of burn out and overwork. The number of patients with two or more long term conditions is increasing, as is the amount of people living into their 90s. In East Cornwall rates of high blood pressure, cancer, and type two diabetes are all increasing. Obesity in children is higher than average and young people with mental ill health or suspected autism are having to wait well over six months to be
access other groups of people that can support them rather than just relying on the GP and hospital care. Saltash Breathers, a self help group for those suffering from chronic lung conditions is an excellent example. And there are lots of other ways in which becoming more connected to local activity can seriously improve our health. Saltash Health Centre is taking some bold steps into exploring how a Health Service that includes the lived experience and support of individuals, our friends and communities as the first port of call for our care, backed up by General Practice and the wide body of caring professionals in the community could deliver a much better cushion to support us when we become vulnerable. We will all need to depend on others one day…. Now’s the time to create the kind of community we will need for tomorrow. The Big Saltash Health Conversation will continue.

Her Rice puddings are legendary and made the old fashioned way, where the ‘skin’ on the pudding is her claim to fame! Mary is the club organiser and co-ordinator, making everyone welcome on arrival, and tends to the diner’s every need. Mary is a well admired part of the trio and her kindness if what people want to come back to on a regular basis. Diane (whom I tread the boards with in the old Wesley Church, in our more youthful years!) organises the entertainment and speakers, also doing the running around and any errands. Diane, Toni and Mary are only too willing to take part in the entertainment, wearing hats and other props as part of the scene, and Diane has been known to read an odd poem or two, when called upon by the guest speakers. The three sisters started helping out at Age Concern many years ago, when their late Mum and Dad, Florence and George Harvey attended the luncheons, and gradually the sisters took up the reins from earlier volunteers, such as Amy Inglis and Barbara English to name but a few. The girls (as I like to call them), having known them best part of my adult life, are Saltash born and bred. They spent their childhood at rural Longlands and were among the last to attend the little Longlands School; now in private ownership as a local dwelling. Fast approaching their 70s, the three sisters are between them very involved in many other organisations in

Moreover, the Renault mini-bus is both Saltash Age Concern’s major asset and its pride and joy, enabling many older people with transport difficulties to take part in various activities and trips. The bus itself, with its low floor and tail lift, is operated by trained volunteers and is regularly safety checked by Hatt Service Station. Age Concern provides training for both bus drivers and helpers and are always ready to welcome new volunteers. It should be said that transport is often a problem for many elderly people and Age Concern are very proud of the service provided by ‘the Red Bus’, which will, with prior arrangement and a small fee, pick up people from the door and return them home after the event. It is also possible for other organisations to hire the mini bus and, if folk wish to discuss either driving or hiring, please contact Mike Finch on 07905 795256.

Men in Harmony
Article by Greg Paulley
Ocean City Sound is a group of men from Saltash and Plymouth who meet together to rehearse songs in close harmony. The basic premise being that most people can get involved in this style of singing. They are the performance chorus of The Plymouth Close Harmony Club which has a history going back to 1978 with its roots in the singing chorus “The Pilgrimaires”. In 2016 they were joined by
42
many men who had previously sung with a group in Saltash and the name was changed to “Ocean City Sound”. The club has the ethos that everyone is welcome regardless of ability and members come from all walks of life. Club Vice Chairman Roger Williams is grinning from ear to ear as he tells me that, ‘Most people can learn to sing and have something to offer. This style, known as four part harmony, has a place for everyone. Experienced singers are really welcome too. It may be new for them, even a chance to get back into singing after a while’. The repertoire is
made up of popular songs that most people know. They do a fantastic job of Christmas carols too! The great thing about it is that the emphasis is on unity not individuals standing out which is different to a lot of pastimes including other forms of singing. Each singer is regarded as equal and necessary which is awesome. Members come to have a go at singing and stay for other reasons such as friendship, a desire to do something meaningful with their spare time, or just to enjoy singing together. The list is very long. They all stay because it really is a great deal of fun and has become an important part of their week. Some of the members had no idea they could sing, others have sung previously but all say it has been a confidence building, addictive experience. The club performs in a variety of environments from church halls to bigger corporate events. I saw them
last Christmas in an indoor market and the best way to describe it would be cheery. Who doesn’t like feeling cheery! They are booked to be part of the Mayflower 400 celebrations this year and they also have had regular spots for years in places such as Cotehele House and the Armed Forces Day on The Hoe. They perform around thirty times per year in Cornwall and Devon. If you have never been to a performance it’s well worth the effort. You will be impressed with their smooth, rich sound and it is obvious the guys really enjoy what they do. It’s infectious and touching to see a group of blokes singing together in harmony. Even better, pop along to a practice session, you will be made to feel very welcome and shown that you can sing. Most importantly it’s fun. Simple fun and unity, you can’t beat it!

Our year 9 students have been choosing their GCSE
options and in order to help them we were really fortunate to have a number of different employers and former students in to share their experiences of their option choices and the journeys they have taken to get them to where they are today. We wanted the students to see the relevance of their school subjects and the skills that they will gain from them and how they have the chance to influence their futures by these choices. This is a big decision for them and gaining as much information, guidance and support as possible means that they are more likely to make the right choices based on their skills,

Marking the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, the end of WW2 in Europe. 75 Years ago, an embattled nation risked celebration after six sombre years. Whilst war continued in the Far East until August 1945, VE Day was marked with an outpouring of Joy and Hope again for the Future. The current show, Generation Action, will be the last in the series. The ideas that we set back in September 2010 were simple. We wanted to showcase the best art that was being made by both amateurs and professionals, in and around Saltash. And we wanted to show a mixture of styles and media: some familiar subjects that were easily accessible; some work that was a little more challenging or experimental and that might set cafĂŠ visitors thinking and talking.

Business
Saltash Search Engine
a business directory for Saltash Small businesses are more likely to provide a good service to local people. Afterall they rely on your recommendations to friends and family and very often you deal with the owner of the business, whose livelihood depends on you being pleased with the service you receive. We have decided to trial a business directory within Love Saltash to make it easier for you to grab a magazine and find that number you are after. We hope the magazine finds a fairly comfortable spot next to your phone, so that once have finished reading the articles you can still access all those excellent services as and when you need them.

We can improve the condition of your lawn with a variety of treatments and feeds and we can scarify to remove moss and thatch. We can re-turf or re-seed areas that are particularly bad; we can get rid of weeds and moss and give the lawn a really good feed ready for the summer months.
