Gareth Thomas and Ben Partrick in training for their epic sea kayak challenge
Two pals from Plymouth are planning to paddle more than 100 miles in kayaks to raise awareness about mental health and autism.

The Friends of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery (FPCMAG) have donated £2500 to The Box for its first-ever work by a Native American artist.
The funding is for a ceramic cooking pot based on the historic designs that would have been used inside traditional Wampanoag dwellings in the 1600s. The pot will be one of the many items on display in The Box’s ‘Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy’ exhibition when it opens in 2020, and is being made by Ramona Peters. Peters, also known as Nosapocket, is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Nation. Working in partnership with Wampanaog cultural agency SmokeSygnals, she has already started developing the piece and is making great progress. Once the ‘Mayflower 400: Legend and Legacy’ exhibition has finished, the pot will become part of The Box’s permanent collections. Stefan Aloszko, chair of the Friends said: “We immediately recognised the greater cultural significance of Ramona Peters’ elegant Wampanoag cooking pot. It’s a work that allows us to appreciate the universal importance of the shared bonds that we experience through culinary heritage and subsequent ideas of home, community and conversation. “For the Friends, this piece is a most welcome addition to the city’s permanent collections.” Members of the The Friends recently visited The Box’s construction site for a hard hat tour and officially presented a cheque to The Box chief executive Paul Brookes and exhibition curator Jo Loosemore. Paul said: “The Friends of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery have helped fund many important acquisitions for our collections over the years. “We’re very grateful for their continued support, particularly for an object which is so symbolic and which will be a real legacy from our Mayflower 400 activities.” To stay up-to-date with all The Box’s Mayflower 400 related news and blog posts visit www.theboxplymouth.com/ mayflower400.
Gareth Thomas, 40, who lives in Mainstone and 39-year-old Ben Partrick from Lipson, will set off from Mount Wise on May 18 and kayak along the Cornish coast arriving in Penzance a week later. Gareth, who is a chartered surveyor with Balfour Beatty, and Ben, who works as a gas technician for Wales & West Utilities, have known each other for over 30 years. They were both born and grew up in Cornwall, but are now settled in Plymouth. Their challenge was developed after a year of sea kayaking, including 18 miles on New Year’s Eve. Gareth said: “We both like to take on physical challenges while raising money for good causes. It started with the Eden Project

marathon in 2016 and has got increasingly more challenging. “Last year we took part in St Luke’s Hospice ‘Tour de Moor’ which involved 70 kilometres of off road cycling and we followed that with the Holy Grit 24 kilometres beach obstacle event in Cornwall. “We both feel lucky to be able to take on physical challenges and enjoy the training and planning that is required. It’s also important to both of us to give back to society by raising money for our chosen charities.” The pair hope to raise at least £1,000 for Plymouth and District Mind and the National Autistic Society and they have already raised nearly £800. Gareth said: “Mental health doesn’t only affect the individual with the illness it also impacts the lives of everyone around them. “I know this first hand as in 2008 my older brother went missing after suffering mental health related issues. He has never been
found and joins the 180,000 people in the UK who are reported missing each year. “Supporting people with mental health issues early helps to treat the illness and prevent a spiral effect of depression and disconnect from society. It’s charities like ‘Mind For Better Health’ that help to support and prevent people effected by mental health.” Ben said that he had been involved in the care of a boy with autism for the last 12 years and had seen how challenging life could be for him. “There have been some amazing people helping him along the way. The care and education he gets at secondary school is second to none and none of that would be possible without the National Autistic Society.” For more information or to donate to the challenge go to https://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/Team/SeaKayakChallenge

cause. My hair is my signature and a bad hair day is just generally a bad day so the last thing I wanted to do was to shave it off. “I’m really close with my mum, we’re like best friends. So to see her going through this and to lose all her hair, it’s heart-wrenching. I don’t want to see my mum like that and I don’t think anyone else would either.” On Mother’s Day weekend, Kairen did the honours of shaving off Josiah’s full head of hair in front of family and friends.
They visited the Mustard Tree together recently to present a cheque for an amazing £6,710. The Mustard Tree is planning to fund a dietitian one day a week for patients undergoing treatment. Josiah’s generous donation will be able to fund a dietitian for almost 12 months.“ They’re an amazing charity,” Josiah continued. “They help everyone affected by cancer, whether you’re going through treatment or know someone who is.”
Josiah in hair-raising fund raising for Derriford Mustard Tree Josiah Carter from Newton Ferrers has donated a staggering £6,710 to the Mustard Tree after shaving off his hair to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre at Derriford Hospital.
Last year, Josiah’s mum, Kairen, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a mastectomy, but unfortunately, the cancer spread to her lymph nodes and required chemotherapy. “Since I first shared the news about mum on social media, we were overwhelmed by all the loving and supportive messages we received,” said Josiah.“I thought this was a real chance to harness all this support and to try and do some good for others who are fighting a similar battle. “I wanted to do something visible to encourage people to donate to such a worthy

WALK IT EVENT IS RETURNING TO CITY THIS JULY
Jobs boost for award-winning Derriford-based IT business
Plymouth is one of eight cities up and down the country staging the WALK IT event to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s & Colitis UK.
This year the event starts and finishes on The Hoe on Saturday July 13 and organisers are hoping that the fabulous turn out last year will be repeated - or even bettered this year. Last year a total of 230 walkers took part, covering either the 5km or 10km route around some of the city’s favourite locations. Their efforts raised a total of £11,000. One of the walkers who took part in last year’s event said: “I just loved the whole atmosphere. My sister who has Crohn’s Disease was able to talk to others about it and they all knew how one another were feeling. It was such an enjoyable day.” People can register as an individual or as a team and will receive a free t-shirt with the £14 registration fee. Children are £7 to register and they also get a free WALK IT t-shirt. Walkers are being challenged to raise £100 or more - a sum which could help pay for 2,000 people to get the information they need about Crohn’s and Colitis. Walkers will explore the city’s sights before returning to the event village at The Hoe for a great afternoon of fun, food and entertainment. Organisers are also keen to hear from volunteers who can help on the day. For information or to register visit www. crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/walkit
The Sponge team celebrate one of their many awards
More than 80 jobs are being created at a Plymouth Science Park based company this year as tech firm Sponge continues to expand upon its’ award-winning successes – despite the current uncertainty generated by Brexit.
being guided by events in Westminster and Brussels, Sponge is preparing for every eventuality associated with Brexit. “The possibility that we may exit the EU with no deal is, in part, helping shape our strategy around fostering stronger relationships in the US. “Just as no deal will mean the UK having to renegotiate overseas trade agreements with the rest of the world, we are exploring our commercial relationships outside of Europe. However, our Dublin office helps us maintain our foothold in the EU.”
Sponge delivers bespoke digital learning packages designed to train employees and improve performance for multi-national brands. Virtual reality is just one of the latest technologies used by the team to make learning an immersive and enjoyable Sponge founder and managing experience. One such training package director Louise Pasterfield focused on helping Royal Mail postal workers reduce the risk of dog attacks during their rounds. The company has won a number of awards over the past year, including being named Learning Provider of the Year at the prestigious 2019 Learning and Performance Institute Learning Awards. Around 120 people are employed across five offices and Sponge is now looking to boost this number to more than 200 by the end of 2019. “Our focus this year is consolidating our UK and European base,” explained Louise Pasterfield, Sponge’s founder and managing director. “In addition to our Plymouth headquarters, we have offices in Bristol, London, Sheffield and Dublin. By 2020, we plan to have expanded our “Operating in the service industry, we are European footprint to the continent and not affected by import or export tariffs, but we’re also currently exploring the US market.” there’s uncertainly around the impact of With the current political and news agenda

Brexit on exchange rates and contractual laws.” “The impact on our exchange rate could actually prove to be advantageous to us doing business in the US and beyond in the future. However, changes in legislation may mean we need to update existing contracts with our European clients. Watch this space.” Sponge is celebrating its 15th birthday this year and the milestone is also important for Plymouth Science Park which has assisted in the company’s development since its inception. “Plymouth Science Park has really supported our expansion over the past 15 years. Our incredible growth has meant we’ve actually had to move seven times, all within the Science Park. “Moving can be disruptive for a business but PSP has always ensured each move has been a fairly painless process; in most cases we’ve closed the door on one office in the evening and opened the door to another the following working day. As a rapidly growing business, having this flexibility for expansion is key. “We recently refreshed our brand and logo earlier this year, calling for new car park and reception signage – PSP have facilitated these changes without fuss. “PSP’s connection with the University of Plymouth and its joint events programme are also advantageous to us in our graduate recruitment efforts locally. In fact, more than a third of our people are alumni.” “In addition, we get to work in a great location, with lovely views of green fields and wild deer.”

Public events planned for Forder Valley Transport Improvements Residents living in or near the Forder Valley are being invited to a series of information events to get the latest update on the Forder Valley Transport Improvements.
Plymouth City Council’s project team, along with the contractor Balfour Beatty, will be on hand to explain the scheme, answer questions and to outline the schedule for the project, which includes Forder Valley Link Road and improvements at Forder Valley Roundabout. The dates are: • Thursday May 16, Tor Bridge School, 2pm to 7pm • Friday May 17, Elm Community Centre, 10am to 7pm • Saturday May 18, Windsor House, Tavistock Road, 10am to 2pm The Forder Valley Link Road is one of the biggest infrastructure projects the Council has ever embarked on and will create a much-needed second route between the A38 and Derriford, avoiding the often heavily congested Manadon roundabout and A386 Tavistock Road. When finished, the link road will connect the junction of Forder Valley Road and Novorossiysk Road with William Prance Road and key destinations such as Derriford Hospital, the University of St Mark and St John and Plymouth Science Park. As well as unlocking economic growth in the north of the city, the scheme objectives are to improve traffic flow on both the Forder Valley and A386 Tavistock Road routes, open up the potential to provide new bus links from the east and the south of the city and to provide new walking and cycling routes. Work on constructing the scheme starts this autumn and is expected to be completed in early 2022.

transform brain research in South West
Work has started on a new facility that will host the most advanced brain research technology in the South West Peninsula.
The Brain Research & Imaging Centre (BRIC) will host the most advanced frontline 3-Tesla MRI scanner in the region, and accommodate seven human neuroimaging research laboratories. The multi-million pound project is a unique collaboration between the University of Plymouth, the research charity DDRC Healthcare and University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPNT), and will also provide improved facilities for hyperbaric medicine – used to help deep sea divers – along with delivery of advanced training. The facility will be an extension to the existing DDRC Healthcare building in Plymouth Science Park, and the first turf was cut by Professor Judith Petts, ViceChancellor and chief executive of the University of Plymouth, Ann James, chief executive of University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, Dr Gary Smerdon, chief executive of DDRC Healthcare, and Professor Stephen Hall, director of BRIC. The MRI scanner will be used by the University to enhance research into conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and autism, and by UHPNT for its neurological research to improve patient outcomes. The work taking place in the other BRIC laboratories will range from exploring cognition and behaviour – understanding why people behave in certain ways – to motor control, allowing detailed investigation into neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis. BRIC will also provide new teaching

space for postgraduate students in human neuroscience. Building work is set to be completed in spring 2020 and Professor Stephen Hall from the University of Plymouth, director of the Brain Research and Imaging Centre (BRIC), is excited about its prospects. He said: “Our research in Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience is currently ranked in the top 20 of UK Universities. The addition of BRIC, and its cutting-edge facilities, will support our ambition to become one of the best brain research organisations in the world. “We are proud to be working with DDRC Healthcare and UHPNT to make this work possible. Everyone has a responsibility to keep children safe, and as well as equipping adults in communities with how they can best protect children, we’re working with young people to build their confidence to understand the different situations they could find themselves in.
Often, children in exploitive situations and relationships won’t know that what is happening to them is abuse. They may be in a relationship where they are given gifts, money or affection in return for performing sexual activities or others performing sexual activities on them. Or they may be tricked into thinking they are in a loving and consensual relationship, or invited to parties and given alcohol or drugs. It doesn’t matter your age, sex, culture or background, any child can be at risk. Young people in Ernesettle have been learning more about this form of abuse - child sexual exploitation (CSE), arming themselves with the knowledge to help them stay safe online and in the real word. In order to keep children safe from exploitation it is important that we raise public and professional awareness of the signs of CSE and make sure everyone knows how to report concerns. This is why a workshop was delivered by Barnardo’s and NSPCC to young people from Space Shot youth group at the Four Greens Wellbeing Hub as part of the Together for Childhood programme. Children can often be exploited
online, forced into sharing explicit images of themselves, taking part in sexual activities via a webcam or smartphone, or having sexual conversations by text or online. The young people took part in some great debates about staying safe and shared how safe they felt from grooming or exploitation on certain apps. They told us that they are often better at looking out for their friends than they are at looking out for themselves. In order to make sure that adults in the community take action to keep children safe, we need to share how people can recognise the possible signs of CSE and grooming, and give children and young people the knowledge and confidence to speak out about any worries or concerns they may have. This is important prevention work, and the more we talk about it, the more we can stop young people from coming to harm, by being tricked into sexual exploitation. By raising awareness, teaching young people about unhealthy relationships, and who to speak to if they have a concern, and identifying and prosecuting preparators, children in our community will be safer. If you want to find out more about Together for Childhood contact the NSPCC in Plymouth at Plymouth. Servicecentre@nspcc.org.uk or 01752 422577 or visit the NSPCC website. Adults with a concern about the welfare of a child can contact the NSPCC’s helpline for advice and support on 0808 800 5000 or help@nspcc.org. uk. Children can contact Childline on 0800 1111 or childline.org.uk 24/7, 365 days a year.

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a unique document. A novel of humour and sharply observed characterisation, it is also a passionate defence of socialist ideas and one of the first truly imaginative portrayals of life written from a working-class perspective. Writer and adapter of the book, Neil Gore said: “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was published originally in 1914, but the themes explored in the book are still relevant today. Top of Gill’s bucket list - a Stobart truck ride! A former Petty Officer with more than 12 years’ service in the Armed Forces attended a special event at HMS Drake where a truck was named the Jenny Wren in her honour, writes Roy Perring.
Gill Chapman who is 59, is receiving treatment in Plymouth for terminal cancer. At the very top of her bucket list was to enjoy a ride in a Stobart Truck. Gill’s wish was granted very much through the work of another former member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, Pat Clifton from Yeovil. Gill had shared her bucket list through a Facebook group of serving and ex serving WRENs and when Pat heard of Gill’s list she contacted Stobart. Now very much an iconic brand Stobart must get many such requests, but Pat’s perseverance paid off as Stobart said they were very pleased to honour the forces. Not only would they give Gill a ride in a truck at HMNB Devonport, but they’d let Gill rename one and the name she chose was Jenny Wren. It was also to mark the centenary of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS). Regular driver of the mighty Jenny Wren truck, Chris Hurst, was down from Tilbury Docks. He normally delivers biofuel for Stobart Energy. He told the Chronicle “It’s brilliant to drive such an iconic truck and even more so now its the Jenny Wren”. Gill said that she regretted not doing a truck
GA Solicitors advises café with a Twist A new and innovative café is set to open in Plymouth’s city centre after commercial advice was provided by established Plymouth law firm, GA Solicitors.
Almost £40,000 will be invested into the space, converting a 2,400 sq ft retail outlet into an innovative and unique board game café. Named Twist, the café will be located on Mayflower Street and will include more than 80 covers across its two floors. It will provide the city with a brand new leisure experience – for £5 you can access their library of over 300 modern and traditional board games and play as many as you like. There will even be ‘Game Gurus’ on hand to advise which games will be best suited to the group and help get customers started. Alongside the board games, Twist will offer a full café experience and will be open in the evenings too with a license to serve alcohol. New leaseholder, Hayley Summers, grew up in Plymouth but spent five years living in London. Two and a half years ago she returned to her hometown to set up the new venture and enjoy life back in the South West. The ten year lease was completed recently, with the extensive fit out expected to take around eight weeks. The grand opening is expected at the end of May. Catherine Gill, commercial property solicitor at GA Solicitors, commented: “I have been delighted to support Hayley with this exciting new project. This transaction reflects predicted trends, showing how the high street is moving away from a more traditional retail environment and instead adapting to provide more experience-led services. “Careful legal advice was required at the outset as consent for change of use was needed, as well as detailed planning permission. We had to ensure the correct approvals were obtained and that the lease was conditional on gaining planning permission to minimise the risk for the client. Now it has completed, I am very much looking forward to visiting when Hayley is open for business.” Hayley Summers, added: “The board game café concept didn’t even exist ten years ago, now they are popping up all over the UK and further afield. I’m thrilled to be bringing Twist to Plymouth and very happy with our Mayflower Street location.

driving course when leaving the services. When asked how she was feeling about the event she replied, “Absolutely outstanding. Really! I’m pleased and proud of the ladies in the WREN’s who made it all happen.” After group photos including Gill’s friends, family and former colleagues there was a break for a reception in the President’s Suite at HMS Drake and then Gill’s wish was granted. She climbed up into the passenger seat of the towering vehicle and Chris Hurst drove her around the edge of the car park several times. She was delighted. John Dickson, regional operations manager at Stobart Energy said: “We are delighted to make Gill’s wish come true and it was an honour to have her ride in one of our iconic vehicles. We would also like to thank HMNB Devonport for hosting the event and everyone else who helped out and attended today.” Around 20 people, including friends, family and former colleagues of Gill, attended the event. The Dauntless Association, which brings together all ex-WRNS members regardless of rank or age, made the request to Stobart Energy. Amazingly Pat Clifton who had got things started said she and several of the other ex WRENs had not met Gill until that morning. “We’re shortly off to lunch together and then home.” No doubt their Facebook page will have been pretty busy.

Popular festival where unity is celebrated
The Rev Osee Ntavuka, of All Nations Ministries (ANM), a multiethnic Christian Church and charity organisation based in Catherine Street, leads the team that organises the popular Unity Festival, held annually on Plymouth Hoe since 2009.
This year’s event, on the weekend of June 22 and 23, is set to be a 10th anniversary celebration to remember. The family-friendly free festival, also known as U-Fest, brings together people of all ages, from all backgrounds and communities for a music and culture extravaganza that transforms Plymouth Hoe into a place to experience something out of the ordinary. The weekend will see live bands on the outdoor main stage, acoustic sets in the tent, kids activities including face-painting, storytelling and bouncy castles, and for when

you’re hungry there is café seating, catering vendors and table displays for community associations and churches. Pastor Osee’s own experiences led him to seek to bring people together - he is a survivor of the terrible genocide that occurred 25 years ago in Rwanda and knows only too well where extreme ethnic divisions can lead. “I escaped three times from being killed,” said Osee, “I would say miraculously. I came as a refugee to Plymouth in 2000, and encountered the love and friendship of people from a local church, who welcomed me with open arms and supported me and my family.” Pastor Osee and wife Mary Louise have four children, two boys and two girls , but they lost many members of their wider family in the genocide, including Osee’s parents. He not only survived but he has since met his mother’s killer, and those who tried to kill him, and forgiven them. He sees forgiveness as the way to healing the wounds and scars of the past in Rwanda. “We want to reach out to all communities with love,” he said. Twice a year Osee and a team of more

than 35 doctors, surgeons and support staff from the UK and Europe travel to Rwanda, Mozambique and Malawi, performing lifechanging, and in some cases life-saving operations. Education, health and social care all play a part in carrying out ‘love in action’ through the work of the organisation Rwanda Legacy of Hope (www.rwandalegacyofhope.com). In Plymouth, ANM (www. allnationsministries. info) offers support and advice to refugees and asylum seekers including translation and interpretation, as well as generally available counselling,
training, youth and befriending services. They also run a programme that provides food for homeless people. Pastor Osee is keen to thank all those who partner with their work, including the festival; like most community-centred activities it relies on the goodwill and expertise of volunteers as well as the good offices of the local council and business community. Unity Festival, with all its vibrancy, colour, music and fun is a natural fit for a team that is motivated to bring communities together – June 22 and 23 on Plymouth Hoe looks like a weekend to mark on the calendar.

Seeing wildlife flourishing in your garden is quite a wonderful sight. With the bee population still declining, it is so important now more than ever to plant flowers that will encourage them to feed on the nectar, and collect the pollen which is used to turn into honey to feed the young bee larvae. The larvae that are chosen to become future ‘queen bees’ are fed with ‘royal jelly’, which is honey produced by young female worker bees and incorporates not only the pollen but also chemical secretions from their glands. So what can you do to encourage bees to visit? For starters, you can plant a plant. These are the top three plants from Plymouth Garden Centre for attracting bees to the garden: Salvia You can often see salvias covered in bees in the evening – perhaps it’s bee dinner-time! Bees can see the colour purple more vividly than any other colour and this will attract them in their numbers. Easy to grow, hardy and colourful. Perfect for a garden border and containers. Alstromeria Despite their exotic appearance, they are hardy down to -12 degrees centigrade. A surprisingly easy plant to look after, which flowers from spring throughout summer. Alstromeria is one of the few plants that has nectar guides (the markings on the flower) that are visible to the human eye as well as the bee; bees see colours on the UV spectrum, which some people think the impressionist artist Claude Monet could also see. Digitalis - The Foxglove A classic flower for the cottage or wildflower garden. A particular favourite for the longtongued bumblebee, its large flower head and ‘landing strip pattern’ on the inside of the flower is designed to draw the attention of a passing bee and guide it to the nectar within. Despite its beauty it is poisonous to humans or pets. Get Children Involved! Not only can children help plant bee-attracting flowers, they can easily build their own little bee house with just a few canes tied together and placed in a sheltered, secure spot. Plymouth Garden Centre also sells houses perfectly suited to butterflies, lacewings and ladybirds - children will watch in awe as insects fill these houses and create their own outdoor home.

Leon completes apprenticeship with flying colours A 29-year-old Plymouth man is celebrating after achieving an outstanding performance in his apprenticeship. Leon Horn, who lives in Hartley Vale, achieved a Distinction in all areas of his customer service practitioner apprenticeship through Skills Group, while working at Plymouth Community Homes. The end point assessment (EPA) is part of the new apprenticeship standard being rolled out nationally, replacing apprenticeship frameworks. The apprenticeship reforms aim to provide a more thorough and practical foundation to the profession, with emphasis on equipping learners with the core knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to progress and thrive throughout their career. As part of the Level 2 customer service EPA, Leon had to complete an apprentice showcase, observation and a professional discussion, demonstrating excellent understanding in all three areas to achieve the Distinction mark from awarding body Pearsons. Leon will now be remaining at Plymouth Community Homes as a permanent member of staff. Ryan Coles, contact centre experience manager at Plymouth Community Homes said: “I have
worked with Leon over the past fourteen months, and he is a very knowledgeable and valuable team member. The qualification recognises the skills he has developed throughout his apprenticeship and has also enabled him to be offered a full time place with us. “Leon is a great example to other learners, highlighting what can be achieved by completing an apprenticeship.” Leon said: “I am delighted by the EPA result and also the offer of a permanent position. I would like to thank Plymouth Community Homes for this opportunity and Skills Group for its support throughout my apprenticeship.” Sharon Chaffe, managing director at Skills Group said: “We are very proud of Leon for his hard work. The EPA is a new and rigorous assessment process and therefore the Distinction result is a credit to his commitment, as well as to our dedicated trainers and Plymouth Community Homes with whom we have a long established relationship. “Our apprenticeships provide a brilliant platform to start a career, providing on-thejob training with top local employers and complemented by training in our state-of-the-art facilities. We look forward to Leon’s progress going forward.”

Pioneering council project scoops top national award A pioneering community infrastructure initiative which is helping to change residents lives in Plymouth has helped the City Council win the top award at the prestigious Royal Town Planning Institute Awards for Excellence.
The ‘City Change Fund’ project was awarded the Silver Jubilee Cup and the Excellence in Tech within Planning Practice category. It is the third time Plymouth City Council has won the Silver Jubilee Cup - the highest accolade in the RTPI awards. The City Change Fund uses Crowdfund Plymouth to distribute funds raised by developments through the Community Infrastructure Levy. While most of this levy is spent on big things that keep the city running like roads, schools and parks, some can be allocated to great local projects. Since 2015, the council has pledged over £250,000 on 60 projects with the Crowdfund Plymouth platform, raising over £1.5 million in the city. Projects have included many from social enterprises who are delivering projects that are close to local peoples’ hearts. Campaigns have included improving local green space, such as Collings Park Trust to a sonic art silent disco at Devil’s Point. The Council uses the Crowdfunder website to distribute the ‘neighbourhood proportion’ and pledges up to 50 per cent of a project’s costs (up to a maximum of £20,000), if they met the legislative and Council’s criteria and priorities. City planning manager Rebecca Miller said: “This is the third time Plymouth has won the Jubilee Cup – the highest accolade the RTPI can give and I am chuffed to bits for our teams, our council and our city to have achieved this recognition. “To me, this project is an incredible example of how a
council project can make a massive difference to hundreds of people. We have been blown away by the ideas, innovation and passion people had for projects designed to make Plymouth an even better place to be. “A city is not just about buildings, roads and services. It is about the people who live here and how they feel about Plymouth. The fact this funding comes from developments across the city means residents are benefiting from growth. We are engaging with community groups and residents in a whole new way. It is helping to galvanise people who have incredible ideas and drive – to make things happen!” The judges thought this online platform was a ground breaking initiative and the impacts are already vast. They were particularly impressed by the high levels of engagement the Council have had with the public, especially the younger generation, empowering them with involvement in the early planning stages. Sadie Morgan, chair of the judges said: “This is a unique and ground breaking initiative. Plymouth City Council went beyond simple community engagement into community involvement by empowering the local community to be proactive and invest with them in the City Change Fund from its inception. The project is a great example of the power of technology and how it can bring people and resources together more quickly than ever before. The RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence are the most established awards in the UK planning industry. Running for over 40 years, they celebrate exceptional examples of planning and the contribution planners make to society. Preparing for the Mayflower 2020 Special Games due to be hosted in Plymouth, local young people have been trying a host of new sports at a new inclusive multi-sport club at YMCA Plymouth.
The club is delivered in partnership with Special Olympics and is open to young people between the ages of eight and 16 with an additional need or intellectual disability. The club is now welcoming new members to join and discover a new sport with the chance of working towards getting a taste of competition in the games that will be held from April 3 to 5 2020. The YMCA Specials Club was launched to offer young people with intellectual disabilities pathways to competition and use sport to overcome barriers, challenge stigma and support their own mental and physical health and wellbeing. The club has been launched from the success of Special Olympics Plymouth & District’s adults club – also hosted at YMCA Plymouth – which has seen many of its members attending national and international games, proudly returning with impressive medal hauls. The new club hopes to engage the next generation, introducing them to new sports leading to competitions and the continued success of Plymouth’s Special Olympians. Before the 2020 Games, athletes are also looking forward to next

The tournament will run alongside the ‘CanDo’ Event (Community Additional Needs Day Out), where inclusive activity organisations across the city will be offering free activities, giving people a taste of what’s on offer locally for people with disabilities. Chairman of Special Olympics Plymouth and District, Alan Stockdale, said: “Right now is the ideal time for young people with intellectual disabilities to get into sport. The Mayflower 2020 games provides a great aim for them to get their first taste of competitive sport.
Even if they’ve never tried a sport yet, I urge them to come to the club and give it a go. Our coaches are ready to develop their skills and get them participating.” The YMCA Specials ‘Multi-Sport’ runs every Wednesday from 4.45pm to 5.45pm at YMCA Plymouth in Honicknowle and the club offers a range of sports including boccia, badminton, bowls, football, cricket, basketball, and much more. Wheelie good challenge for teams Registration for the second annual Every Ride Counts challenge is now open. The workplace cycle challenge, organised by Plymouth City Council’s Plymotion team, pits teams from organisations in Plymouth against each other to achieve the most bike trips through their daily commutes. The ‘wheelie’ good competition runs during June and takes in Bike Week during June 8 to 16. It’s all about encouraging more people to get out and about on their bike, reducing car trips in Plymouth throughout June and beyond. Last summer’s challenge had 86 employees from ten different organisations making up 23 teams to take part in the challenge. A team of four cyclists from Babcock International won Best Team in Every Ride Counts 2018. This year’s challenge will see teams
competing again for the top place, and each bike trip they take, whether a long or short journey, counts. More prizes are up for grabs, including the Every Ride Counts Workplace Award, nominated by employees for being a cycle-friendly employer. Registration to enter Every Ride Counts closes on June 7. Increasing the number of people cycling to work and leaving the car at home can improve the health and wellbeing of staff, cut down travel costs to work and help solve limited office parking spaces. It also reduces traffic congestion and leads to lower carbon emission.
One of last year’s participants said: “I have often thought about riding my bike to work, but always found an excuse not to! This was just what I needed to get me to take the plunge and I have carried on cycling into work now the Plymotion event is over and intend to do so until the weather gets pants again!” A prize of £100 worth of vouchers is on offer for best team (four in a team) and best individual. There is also a prize draw of £50 worth of vouchers up for grabs when people register. To find out more about the challenge, go to the Plymotion website or contact Plymotion@plymouth.gov.uk. You can also follow the Facebook page and Twitter account. Register online at www.plymouth. gov.uk/parkingandtravel/cycling/ everyridecounts2019

Stagecoach South West is putting its weight behind a mammoth awareness and fundraising campaign for St Luke’s Hospice as key partner for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth.
The exciting sculpture trail with a difference is set to be Devon and Cornwall’s biggest public art event for 10 weeks this summer from July 8 to September 16. It is estimated the colourful parade of 40 unique elephants will attract 250,000 visitors to explore the trail, raising vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice. The charity has recruited the beloved children’s storybook favourite Elmer the elephant, plus 40 of his charming chunky chums, for the outdoor trail around Plymouth and surrounding areas. Each sculpture will feature a bespoke design, painted by talented local artists. As well as turning Plymouth patchwork with the enchanting elephants, St Luke’s is using the campaign to highlight the importance of its vital service and encourage more open and honest conversations about the ‘taboo’ subjects of death, dying and bereavement that can help us all, including schoolchildren who

Bob Dennison, managing director of Stagecoach South West, said: “We are thrilled to be Presenting Partner and supporting such a wonderful charity. We will be working to help raise awareness of Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth and the incredible work done by St Luke’s, and of course help raise vital funds. “We work to support a range of local community causes in the South West, the very communities we help bring together through our local bus services. It’s fantastic to see the excitement about the trail already starting to build and we are delighted to be backing such a fabulous and worthwhile fundraising campaign.” The mass participation, family-friendly trail, will delight anyone who comes to explore Britain’s Ocean City and will also raise money to fund the emotional, practical and spiritual support St Luke’s offers. The finale of the Parade will be an auction of the colourful and unique elephant sculptures, enabling St Luke’s to continue to provide outstanding compassionate care for patients at home, in hospital and at its specialist unit at Turnchapel.
Mike Dukes, commercial director for St Luke’s, said: “St Luke’s service reaches way beyond Plymouth which is why it makes perfect sense for Stagecoach South West to be our Presenting Partner for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth. Their generous support is invaluable to our charity’s campaign and of course they will be helping thousands of people get to and around the trail on their bus services. “Having Stagecoach South West as a partner is also important because it will help us reach more people and increase awareness that talking more openly about death, dying and bereavement – which affects us all – ensures that no-one living with loss feels forgotten, isolated or left behind.” With close to 1200 employees and 380 vehicles, Stagecoach South West connects hundreds of communities across the region, providing over 30 million passenger journeys every year. Stagecoach South West operates local services across Plymouth, as well as the Falcon cross regional coach service from Plymouth to Bristol airport and city centre. Co-op staff step out for charity
Co-op staff from stores across Plymouth have walked a total of 40 miles in support of Mental Health Awareness - raising £1,500 in the process.
Employees Nicky Bowden and Cassandra Humphreys organised the event, while colleagues, friends and family joined them along the way. In the weeks leading up to the event, local Coop stores took part in fundraising for the cause. Beacon Park stores decided to sell 100 lucky squares for £1 each, awarding half of the winnings to the lucky buyer of the winning square, and the other half being donated to the chosen charity. This was designed and organised by team leader Aimee Smith, who also took part in the walk on the day. The walk was organised into two groups, one
starting at the Southway Store and the other in Staddiscombe. At 6AM both groups set off on their scheduled journeys, later to be reunited at the Mutley Plain Store where they would finish the last 4 check-ins together as one. Over 30 stores were visited during the walk, and check-ins were documented via the Mind Walk Plymouth’s Facebook Page. The final store to be reached by those walking for Mental Health Awareness was Fort Austin. The collective of colleagues, friends and family reached their final destination earlier than planned, with 30 minutes to go. They were welcomed by a crowd of supporters. A total of £1500 was raised for Plymouth & District Mind, a charity who provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing mental health problems.

Tribute to society’s unseen heroes THE
By Dave Simpson, station manager of Cross Rhythms Plymouth
Experience Sat at home one recent Monday evening I received a message saying that a close family member had injured themselves and was at A&E. Needless to say plans changed and I made contact to check they were ok.
Thankfully the injury was not a major one and the grateful patient was able to leave Derriford hours later after being checked over and treated. Myself and my wife went up to the hospital in the early hours of the morning to offer a lift and be there to support if we could. In my only previous experiences with the emergency department I have been the patient and so it was a strange experience going in to wait with someone. I have to say it was an assault on the senses as I could see and hear people of all ages with varying degrees of physical ailments. It was pretty overwhelming. Standing there feeling quite uncomfortable I couldn’t help but feel an almighty sense of admiration for all the staff who were there to care for the patients. There were all kinds of different needs to be met and new people
continually arriving by car or ambulance to them working very unsociable hours. add to their workload. If you own a business, think of the employees and customers whose lives would be affected if you stopped. If you work as a waitress in a restaurant, think of the number of people who you have served as they celebrate a special occasion or enjoy a well earned meal out. Not only that but God sees you. That may sound like a strange thing to say but the truth is God sees what you do and loves you and your life more than you could know. God knows what you contribute and how much it costs you to do what you do. He knows the ups and the downs and the struggles you face to keep going and He is your biggest cheerleader. As I write this Easter is fast approaching, a time when many millions of people across the globe will remember the fact that God showed up to mankind in the person of Jesus and demonstrated powerful love for people, often taking time out to be with those who felt like they were unseen. Far beyond my ability to describe in a short article, there are many people to this day who know Jesus is with them in their day-to-day life and draw great comfort, peace and resolve from that. The best news is that this can be true for you too.
Commemoration to mark 25th anniversary of Rwanda genocide A special event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the genocide against members of the Tutsi community in Rwanda will be held in Plymouth in May.
Kwibuka - which means 'Let Us Remember' - will take place on May 18. It is being organised by Plymouth-based All Nations Ministries, whose leader Revd Osee Ntavuka, survived the genocide but lost many members of his family. It was during a 100 day period in April 1994 that an estimated 800,000 men, women and children - all from the minority Tutsi community - were systematically murdered by the rival Hutu tribe. The Kwibuka event will be attended by the Rwanda High Commissioner, the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, the Mayor of Rwandas's Nyarugenge District and the Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt Revd Nick McKinnel. The afternoon's programme will include the laying of flowers on the Memorial Stone at the Peace Garden on Plymouth Hoe, which will also include speeches, prayers and songs from a children's choir. This will then be followed by a Commemoration Service at Catherine Street Baptist Church led by Revd Osee Ntavuka. The sermon will be given by the Bishop of Plymouth followed by two genocide survivors who will share the horror of their experiences. Revd Osee Ntavuka will express his views on the benefits of forgiveness, followed by speeches from the Rwanda High Commissioner and the Mayor of Nyarugenge District. A candle will then be lit in remembrance of all those who died and suffered during the genocide.

Brian Conley to star in Plymouth panto
Theatre Royal Plymouth have announced that comedy legend, musical theatre, television and Strictly star Brian Conley will lead the cast of this year’s spectacular production of Cinderella.
In a career spanning three decades Brian has appeared in award-winning West End musicals and television sitcoms, presented his own chat shows, recorded three albums and completed numerous sell-out tours of the UK. He was a contestant on the 15th series of BBC 1’s Strictly Come Dancing. Coupled with prodancer Amy Dowden, Brian was fifth to leave the competition, not before wowing the nation with his endearing dance routines and loveable personality. Plymouth theatregoers shall go to the ball this Christmas as Cinderella transforms from rags to riches, outwits her very Ugly Sisters, and with the help of her hilarious friend and one very magical Fairy Godmother, wins the heart of the dashing Prince Charming. Tea dances return to The Hoe as part of Lady Astor Statue campaign The iconic Plymouth tea dances of the Second World War are to be held again on Plymouth Hoe as part of the Lady Astor Statue Campaign celebrating 100 years of women in Parliament.
For one day only there will be dancing again with a band, professional dancers on hand and sailors in uniform on May 26 this year between 1pm and 4pm. The original tea dances were organised by Nancy and Waldorf Astor during the Second World War to boost morale after the city was bombed almost beyond recognition during the Blitz in 1941. In the wake of this devastation the tea dances were held on The Hoe and Lady Astor famously joined those dancing. At the time Waldorf Astor said: “The people of Plymouth have danced on the Hoe during the darkest days of war. They will dance here again in peace on a Hoe which overlooks a city which has been planned for them, for a wider, freer, healthier, and more prosperous life.” As part of the Lady Astor Statue Appeal many pensioners who remembered Nancy Astor contacted the project. Among them was Alice Jones, 92, who said: “I danced on The Hoe promenade in front of Elliot Terrace, Lady Astor on the microphone urging us girls to dance with the many servicemen from all nations. A statue in her memory is long overdue. Her good works will live on forever. God bless her. We will ever be grateful to her.” Project leader Alexis Bowater said: “We had so many people contacting us with memories and in particular recalling these tea dances that we thought it would be fun, fitting and poignant tribute to them to fulfil the promise Waldorf Astor made all those years ago. “The people of Plymouth will dance again on The Hoe, in peacetime, on May 26th this year, with representatives of Her Majesty’s Armed Devon Family History Society Fourth Tuesday of month Come along to our meetings and hear interesting and varied talks. Young carers are treated to ocean-themed fun
Young carers in Plymouth are being given the chance to take a break and connect with the ocean thanks to a new series of events being run by the National Marine Aquarium (NMA). A group of young carers from Stoke Damerel Community College aged between 11 and 14 have been invited to attend the second special edition Ocean Squad programme after the initial programme, which ran throughout December and January 2018, proved to be a huge success. Those participating in the latest run of Young Carers Ocean Squad sessions are being treated to an action-packed schedule of fun and educational activities, including snorkelling, taking a boat trip around Plymouth Sound, cooking sustainable
seafood and exploring the local beaches. They are also able to go behind the scenes at the NMA with an exciting backof-house tour, visiting all the places only Aquarium scientists are usually able to go. Joe Farrow, Ocean Squad co-ordinator at the National Marine Aquarium, said: “We’re thrilled to have been able to offer this exciting programme of Ocean-themed fun to young carers across the city, and even more so that is has been so well received. “Many young carers have a lot of responsibility on their shoulders, and so we really wanted to help bring their community together and give them a break from the pressures of their day-to-day lives. Our Young Carers Ocean Squad here at the NMA is a chance for them to have some fun, make new friends and learn and try new things.”
@PlymChronicle
“The response to the programme so far has been incredible, and all places have already been filled now for the rest of the year. It has been immensely popular, and we hope that all young carers attending in 2019 will have a fun and memorable experience they won’t forget.” The project is being funded by a grant of almost £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, which was awarded to the NMA in September 2018, with each Young Carers Ocean Squad series lasting six sessions and a further two series set to take place later this year. All costs including activities, materials, equipment and lunches are being covered by the grant, with places offered on a complimentary basis to carers across the city.

Project SEARCH is a partnership between University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust, Pluss, Serco and City College Plymouth who create employment opportunities for young adults with Learning Disabilities. They provide supported work based experiences in Derriford Hospital, where they learn the skills that all employers need together with specific skills for individual jobs. The scheme supports adults aged between 18 and 24 with learning disabilities who live in Plymouth. They will experience three supported internships within Derriford Hospital and complete a Level 1 academic course. In its first eight years, 69 per cent of the project’s interns have gone on to achieve competitive paid employment. Project SEARCH intern, Regan Robinson, who gained employment as a domestic cleaner for Serco within Derriford Hospital, said: “Being on Project SEARCH has been fantastic and I ended up with paid employment as a cleaner, which was my first choice of jobs. “Earning my own money means I don’t have to rely on my parents anymore, being independent is a great feeling.” Pip Critten, Pluss employment advisor, commented: “Regan was the 29th Project SEARCH Intern to gain paid employment within Derriford Hospital with another 22 gaining employment elsewhere in the city.” He continued: “Working with these young people who are so keen and committed to employment is a privilege and they make reliable long term employees.”Project SEARCH is now recruiting for their tenth year and are holding information events for students and their families who want to find out more. Student Reece French remembered This year, marks the twelfth anniversary of the Reece French bricklaying competition, set-up in memory of the former City College Plymouth student.
Reece French died aged 20, in September 2007, after he was hit by a falling skip full of bricks at the East End Community Village Enterprise Centre in Cattedown. The competition set-up in his memory put the college’s bricklaying students’ skills to the test by challenging them to build a complex patterned wall in an allocated time. With trowels in hand, the students tried to ‘wow’ their lecturers in the hopes of winning an award. Reece’s parents, Denise and Ivan French, and Simon Parsons from Kier, presented the awards to the winners. Reece’s mother, Denise, said: “It’s great to see the College host this event year after year as it’s really close to our hearts. A big thanks for everything and we appreciate that the College continues to honour our son.” City College’s Director of Technology, Marine and Renewables, Peter Mercy, said: “This year’s competition has been fantastic and the standard of work, as always, has been very high. It is a real honour to be able to run this annual competition to honour Reece’s life. “The students all work incredibly hard throughout the year and the competition is an opportunity for them to show off their talents. Reece’s parents are always so supportive of the competition. I would like to say a special thank you to the College staff who supported this event and to Kier for their attendance and kind prize donations and, of course, to the students for taking part.” This year’s winners included: first year apprentices Sam Lavington (first place) and Brandon Loze (second place); second year apprentices Paddy Hayes (first place) and Kyle Dickinson (second place); and Shaun Duggan who was awarded a trophy for First year apprentice, Sam Lavington, shows off his first place prize with Reece’s the most improved student. parents, Ivan and Denise, and Simon Parsons from Kier Construction

great to be recognised for my hard work.” Hannah Tustain, 17, Millbrook Music Performing & Production Arts Student of the Term Hannah has a hearing impairment, but has developed excellent personal strategies for ensuring there is no barrier to her learning. As a compassionate and caring member of her group, Hannah always looks to support other students and has already made a significant contribution to college life through a number of performance projects, including playing a number of roles in a recent performance of ‘One Million Tiny Plays About Britain’ by Craig Taylor. She is currently working with her group on a new piece of original theatre which explores modes of communication, highlighting the perils of not understanding a given situation, particularly for the hearing impaired. “I love my course at College. My confidence in acting is really developing and it’s been great to play a part in developing the signing skills of staff within the department in order to better support other students like myself. Hopefully, this will help me to further develop my skills and scope as a theatre maker.” Hannah Roberts - Cossey, 21, Ivybridge Access to Higher Education Student of the Term Access student, Hannah, was celebrated for her sunny outlook and deep compassion for others - which stands her in good stead for a career as a midwife. As a real team player, Hannah was nominated for an award not only for her exemplary approach to learning, but also for her heavy involvement in her group’s fundraising project. “I love being part of the Access community at the College. The staff and students I work with are great to be around and there are so many opportunities for students to get involved with. “The fundraising project has been so much fun. I’ve loved being involved in bake sales, arts and crafts, designing, and organising raffles for charity and it’s lovely to have received a Student of the Term award.”

The event recognises students who have gone above and beyond - making a positive contribution to the College or local community, or overcoming personal challenges to achieve in their studies. The award winners were joined by family, friends and their nominating teachers. They enjoyed a delicious celebration meal prepared by the college’s catering and hospitality students before receiving their awards. Penny Wycherley, Principal of City College, said: “The Student of the Term awards are an important event for the College and a great way to celebrate the success of our students. Events like these are a celebration of some of the remarkable achievements of our students and recognise publicly their hard work and commitment. “These students, some of whom have had to overcome additional barriers, are each progressing incredibly well and deserve to be congratulated. The staff at the c ollege are enormously proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they reflect so well on the City. It really is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our students and to share in their successes with family, friends and teaching staff.” Award Winners Vanessa Hawken, 43, Devonport and Caroline Mayne, 51, Mutley Vanessa and Caroline were both appointed as assistant managers at kitchen and homeware chain Lawsons and knew the value an apprenticeship would bring to making them a success in their new roles, but they didn’t anticipate winning Student of the Term awards for their work ethic and teamwork. Caroline said: “I’ve worked in retail for 35 years, six of which have been at Lawsons as a parttime sales assistant. The support I’ve received
from my family and assessor at the college have made returning to education possible. They have motivated me and reassured me that the hard work is all worthwhile which has clearly paid off.” Vanessa has worked at Lawsons for 14 years and her hard work was rewarded with a promotion to assistant manager. She said:”I was keen to improve my knowledge and the management apprenticeship has taught me everything I need to know to become an efficient manager. Caroline and I have really supported each other through the qualification and to be recognised for that has been lovely.” Ismail Mustafa, 33, Saltash English Student of the Term When Ismail’s lecturer first met him in 2013, he could not write, or read any more than his own name. Over the past few years he has worked hard to develop his literacy skills, whilst raising a young family and working. “I really enjoy the college environment and am really proud of what I have achieved over the past few months. Coming to college has helped me to develop my literacy skills. “I am now able to complete forms and deal with correspondence with confidence. I am looking forward to completing my Level 1 Functional Skills in English and this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my lecturers.” Tom Briggs, 18, Torpoint Science Student of the Term When Tom’s step-dad sadly passed away, the biomedical science student demonstrated incredible grit, determination and resilience, focusing on his goal of going to university and maintained a focus on revising for and sitting his science exams despite the sad events. “When I came to the College, I had no formal qualifications. I was really pleased to gain my Level 2 in Applied Science and now I’m nearing the end of my level 3, am really proud to have received an offer to study biomedical science at the University of Plymouth. “It’s been challenging for so many reasons, but the college has been really supportive and it’s

Detectives are seeking information after residents in the Keyham and Crownhill areas of the city were visited on Tuesday April 2 and pressured to hand over money. Both victims were told work costing £900 needed to be done to their water supply or drains – or they faced having to leave their properties. An elderly woman was approached in the Keyham area at around 11am by a suspect who claimed to be carrying out drainage work in the area. She was later visited at home and paid a deposit of £600, only to be told the problem was larger than anticipated and would cost £1,800. The victim went to the bank to withdraw the remaining funds, but decided to contact police after a taxi driver advised her not to hand over the cash. The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his late 20s or early 30s, of medium build, about 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in in height, and clean shaven. He spoke in a local accent and was wearing a hard hat. At around 1pm on the same day, an elderly female in the Crownhill area was visited by a man who stated there was an issue with her water supply. She was later contacted by an older, unknown male who again asked her for money, but the woman became suspicious and refused to pay. The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his early 20s, of average build and height, with no facial hair. He was wearing a high-visibility jacket and hard hat. Detective Constable Sam Smith, of Crownhill CID, said: “Police would like to remind the public to be vigilant against this type of crime, look out for vulnerable family members and neighbours and be reminded that caution should be used against traders who attend at your door pressuring you for money. “The public should not feel threatened or intimidated by traders or commit to any unnecessary work. If you feel vulnerable to this or feel threatened then call 999.” Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity, or who has further information, is urged to contact DC 7419 Sam Smith on 101 and quote crime number CR/029124/19.
