Power up for Cross Rhythms Plymouth
2 July 2019
@PlymChronicle
Cross Rhythms Plymouth community radio station is now reaching further than ever before.
The station, which has been broadcasting in the city since 2007 on 96.3FM, can now be heard clearer across the city and its signal travels much further. It can now be picked up in areas north of Yelverton on the moors and into much of South East Cornwall. The decision from Ofcom to grant increased transmission power was not guaranteed as several stations across the country were unsuccessful in their applications. Cross Rhythms Plymouth station manager David Simpson said of the ruling: “We are delighted to have been awarded this increase. It is great to have our FM signal much clearer across the city and we are so pleased that as a result more people will be able to tune in to the station. “From feedback we receive from listeners we know the station encourages many people in Plymouth. We are committed to airing positive and life-affirming content and we hope that listeners who tune in on FM will notice the improvement to the signal.” The development comes at a key time for the station in which they are looking to upgrade much of their now ageing equipment. As a community radio station Cross Rhythms Plymouth is charity run and so is looking to raise much of the funds required for these upgrades. You can lend your support through their Crowdfunder project at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/crossrhythms-plymouth-equip1. As a part of its programming the station is committed to promoting local charities, community groups and organisations who are working for the good of Plymouth and the local area. Over the years the likes of Shekinah, Friends and Families of Special Children, CHICKS, Street Factory, St Luke’s Hospice and many more have all been featured. The Community Matters programme, airing weekdays at 11am, provides those organisations with a fantastic opportunity to explain their work. Robert Maltby from St Luke’s Hospice said of the show: “Cross Rhythms’ Community Matters programme has really enabled us to get our message out there and properly explain what we do.” To listen to Cross Rhythms Plymouth tune in to 96.3FM on your radio in and around Plymouth or listen online at bit.ly/ crplymradio. You can also download their free app by searching ‘Cross Rhythms Plymouth’ wherever you download your apps on a smartphone or tablet.
Major improvements planned for Morlaix Drive at Derriford Plans to transform a key route in and out of Derriford Hospital are being presented to the public at information events in July.
Morlaix Drive is currently a narrow, 300m stretch of road that links Brest Road with the hospital and provides access for the ambulance station, Brest Way and the hospital’s large multi-storey car park. It is, in parts, too narrow for vehicles to travel along in both directions. Improvements include widening the road to allow for the flow of two-way traffic, including buses, and an upgrade of the existing narrow footway to a shared pedestrian and cycle path. At the moment, traffic often queues along Brest Road at busy times of the day and the opening of the Forder Valley Link Road means that traffic movements and the routing of buses are set to change in the area in the next few years. To help with this, plans show that the junction of Morlaix Drive with Brest Road will operate under new traffic lights and the northbound Brest Road entry on to Derriford
Roundabout will be for buses, cyclists and emergency vehicles only. Traffic travelling to Derriford Roundabout from Morlaix Drive will be able to do so via William Prance Road, which was recently upgraded as part of the Derriford Transport Scheme. Pedestrian crossing facilities and bus stops will also be upgraded as part of the project. Staff and visitors to the hospital will still be able to use Morlaix Drive and the southbound exit from Derriford roundabout onto Brest Road will remain open to all vehicles. The main purpose of the scheme is to provide better bus access to Derriford Hospital and improve reliability for bus services in the north of the city, complimenting the nearby Derriford Hospital Interchange as well as the Marjon Link Road. Two public information events will take place at Derriford Hospital main entrance foyer on Thursday July 11 from 3pm to 7pm and at Windsor House on Saturday July 13 from 10am to 2pm. Members of the project team will be available to discuss the plans and answer any questions on the scheme.
Comments from the events will be collated and fed into the final design ahead of works starting later this year. Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet member for Strategic Transport and Infrastructure, said: “Although this seems like a small piece of the network to focus on, actually it is of massive importance to this part of the city. “Morlaix Drive is just one part of the infrastructure improvements we need to allow sustainable growth in the north of the city to happen. It will become a key strategic route for buses, allowing direct access to the hospital via the new Forder Valley Link Road for future bus services from the east of the city. It will also facilitate faster journey times for buses to enable them to serve new communities, employment and retail sites.” The project is being funded using £3.3m of funding already awarded by the Department for Transport through the National Productivity Investment Fund with the Council contributing around £1.4m from developer contributions. More details on how to feedback on the scheme can be found at www.plymouth.gov. uk/morlaixdrive
group. Now, thanks to National Lottery the staff, children and their families, we will be able to broaden the range of opportunities available to local children with disabilities, more easily. This is important because it helps us all, to build relationships with others facing similar challenges and to create their own supportive circles of friends and peers.” Southway Playcare also offers after school and holiday club activities for youngsters, as well as a regular Wednesday night youth club. The after school club is open during term time between 3pm and 6pm Monday to Friday and staff can collect children from Beechwood, Oakwood, Mary Dean and
Widewell primary schools. A wide range of activities are provided including games, art, crafts and sports. Light snacks are provided for children who stay for longer than an hour. The holiday club is open Mondays to Fridays from 8am to 6pm and features extensive activities and special trips to local attractions. Southway Playcare has a fully qualified staff team and are registered with OFSTED, receiving a Good rating in its most recent inspection. It is based at the Southway Centre, Hendwell Close, Southway. For details of costs and further information call 01752 703581.
Minibus boost for Southway Playcare Southway Playcare has received a big boost from the National Lottery with funding for a wheelchair accessible minibus.
The eight passenger minibus was handed over at the end of June and will be a valuable addition to the group, which organises various trips as well as residential breaks for its young people. Judy Thompson, play co-ordinator of Southway Playcare, said: “We’re delighted that the National Lottery Community Fund has recognised our work in this way. I have been working on such a project for over 10 years, since having to hire buses with drivers, which worked out far too expensive for our

Sailor volunteers help out at Widey Court school
New starting point for charity walk

A team of volunteers from Devonport’s HMS Drake donned gardening gloves and grabbed spades, forks and wheelbarrows, to assist the site manager at a Crownhill school in his grounds management duties.
The sailors from the Hydrography and Meteorology (HM) branch along with engineers and writers who work in the Fleet HM Unit in Devonport, shifted logs, dug-up overgrown plants and refreshed the pots and borders, in the grounds of Widey Court Primary School. They also helped clear the ground where the school’s site manager Shaun Duffey, was creating a duck house and pond for the school’s ducklings. “I’d noticed Mr Duffey had his work cut out for him with the unexpected new ‘over-chirpy’ arrivals,” said Lieutenant Commander Linda Lawrence, a parent at the school. “So I offered some extra ‘ooomphh’, and set about organising some willing volunteers. Many hands make light work and we soon made an improvement to the small section at the reception area, clearing out overgrown bushes and replacing and refreshing the small planters as well as helping shift logs to make way for the new duck enclosure.” Well over a fifth of the children in the school come from service families, and headteacher Shaun Nicholls is always keen for parents to come along and add their shoulder to the wheel. “Parents already pop in on Outreach sessions, and bring some real life scenarios to relevant topics and of course the children

love to be inspired by uniformed personnel and see their mum or dad come in to class,” said Shaun. Two of the volunteers Linda Lawrence and Petty Officer Matthew Stockley have children at Widey in Year 1 and Foundation respectively, and to complete the afternoon, the Naval volunteers were invited to join the Good Manners Tea Party with the Headteacher, a treat for the nominated
children of each year group to encourage good behaviour. “It was lovely for the children to have the opportunity to learn a little bit more about their parents jobs and what inspired them to work in the Navy‚“ said Mr Nicholls. “We hope to make this a more regular feature in the school calendar and get others involved and engaged in STEM subjects too.”
National award for Derriford’s Acute Parkinson’s team Derriford Hospital’s Acute Parkinson’s team have won an award at the national UK Parkinson’s Excellence Network awards, held in Manchester. Parkinson’s, a neurological condition for which there is currently no cure, affects 145,000 people across the UK. At least two people are diagnosed with the disease every hour. For people with Parkinson’s, being an inpatient in hospital can be particularly challenging and unnerving, especially when it comes to the administration of medication. If medication isn’t provided on time, their ability to manage their symptoms may be reduced, affecting important functions such as movement and swallowing. In 2016, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust established a specialist Parkinson’s service, which is led by Dr Camille Carroll, honorary consultant neurologist at the Trust and associate professor at the University of Plymouth. The
service now incorporates complex and advanced therapy clinics, as well as planned ‘one-off’ clinics, to help patients with Parkinson’s to self-manage their condition better, reducing unnecessary hospital admissions and the length of potential stays. Emma Pearson, Parkinson’s nurse specialist in the team explained: “We now combine the use of the RAPA (repeat admission patient alerts) system with our patient management system. The system immediately alerts the Parkinson’s nurse service that a Parkinson’s patient has been admitted to the hospital, and enables us to speedily visit the person on the ward soon after admission, assess needs and provide medication advice, as well as ensuring that medication is received on time. “As a service we continue to attend community Parkinson’s groups, to ensure that all Parkinson’s patients are aware of our service prior to coming to hospital, and liaise closely with other
professional community services to ensure continuity of care.” In particular, the most recent patient satisfaction survey reflects the team’s efforts to improve discharge planning for Parkinson’s patients, with the proportion of patients being seen by the specialist teams soon after discharge from hospital increasing from 37% to 87%. The team were nominated for the award by Val Evans, whose husband had been a recent patient. She said: “When my husband was admitted, he was in a very distressed, frightened state. The Parkinson’s nursing team quickly came to see us and we were very reassured by their calm approach. “Together we agreed an excellent care plan and it continued to work well throughout his seven-week stay in hospital, thanks to the regular follow-ups by the nursing team and their calm and patient manner.”
Plymouth is one of nine cities up and down the country staging the WALK IT event to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s & Colitis UK. The event, on Saturday July 13, was originally due to start and finish on The Hoe, but will now take place at Central Park. This follows Plymouth City Council’s decision to relocate all walking-based fund raising events to Central Park, to make the most of the £9 million investment there. The event village will be located near the bottom end of Central Park and the 5k route takes walkers from the start point down to Armada Way and then on to The Hoe, which means there will be some beautiful views to take in - as well as being less strenuous for those who have mobility issues. The 10k route starts from the same point and takes in Royal Parade, Exeter Street, the Barbican and Waterfront. Last year a total of 230 walkers took part, covering either the 5km or 10km route around some of the city’s favourite locations. Their efforts raised a total of £11,000. People can register as an individual or as a team and will receive a free t-shirt with the £14 registration fee. Children are £7 to register and they also get a free WALK IT t-shirt. Walkers are being challenged to raise £100 or more - a sum which could help pay for 2,000 people to get the information they need about Crohn’s and Colitis. Organisers are also keen to hear from volunteers who can help on the day. For information or to register visit www. crohnsandcolitis.org.uk/get-involved/ fundraising/walk-it-plymouth

If you are reading this, perhaps you’d consider becoming a reading coach for Read Easy Plymouth? Read Easy Plymouth has recently formed to offer one-to-one reading coaching to local adults. It is affiliated to national charity Read Easy UK, which was set up in 2010 by Ginny Williams-Ellis, who ran the Shannon Trust’s prisoner-to-prisoner reading programme in Dorchester. Ginny saw how a confidential, one-to-one approach could encourage people to come forward for support and successfully learn to read. The first Read Easy group was started for the wider community, and there are now 29 Read Easy groups across the country – and counting! Read Easy Plymouth is now seeking people willing to join as volunteer coaches. No previous experience is necessary: all that is required is a genuine passion and commitment to help local adults to learn to read. Training will be provided with the first training day for new coaches taking place on Tuesday July 16 and there are still spaces for a few more volunteer coaches. There are many reasons why people may not have learnt to read as children. Read Easy reading coaches minimise the possible stress and embarrassment involved in learning to read as an adult by providing confidential, one-to-one tuition at flexible times and in discreet and convenient places. Read Easy’s gentle, free, volunteer-led one-to-one approach allows people to learn in privacy, at their own pace, and with the understanding support of their own dedicated reading coach. Why get involved? The difference Read Easy makes is genuinely ‘life-changing’; it’s a phrase that new readers use over and over
again. It helps them in so many ways: • getting jobs or promotion, or attending training courses • becoming independent shoppers of medicines, food and clothing and life’s essentials • voting in general and local elections for the first time in their lives • reading books, newspapers and accessing the Internet/social media;completing online forms too. • campaigning with confidence for change in their local communities • having the confidence to go to the doctors or opticians for a check up • increased confidence and self-esteem, and improved mental health • supporting their children and grandchildren with reading and homework Read Easy is cost effective, its working model is very lean, with all the local organisation and one-to-one reading coaching being done entirely by committed and hard-working volunteers. Anyone interested in helping adults in the Plymouth area learn to read, is encouraged to
get in touch. There are also some vacancies on the enthusiastic management team, which meets about once a month. Or maybe you could help spread the word about Read Easy Plymouth to the local community? Whatever your interest, they would love to hear from you! STEM. This will be followed on September 14 with a cardboard boat race. The extravaganza is not just for the young people – some of the events are about providing
information to parents so they can get a flavour of the opportunities available to them, the expected pay and the qualifications. Research shows that it only takes three memorable experiences for young people to become passionate about these subjects and to pursue them through qualifications and careers. Plymouth STEM is a collaboration between industry, Plymouth City Council and Higher Education and Further Education working to grow, keep and attract STEM talent and inward investment. The aspiration is to become known as Britain’s STEM City.
Stem Spectacular now under way A ‘STEM Spectacular’ is now underway with a programme of events designed to inspire Plymouth’s children and young people to get into science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The STEM Spectacular officially started with the launch of a new annual Plymouth STEM schools’ competition at the official opening of the Tamar Bridge visitor centre. The competition developed by Plymouth STEM, the University of Plymouth and the Institution of Civil Engineers, asks student to re-design a different iconic Plymouth structure each year, starting this year with the Tamar Bridge. Over the coming months events designed to inspire young people in these key subjects are getting underway. A total of 15,680 pupils – all in Key Stages 2 to 5 – are all getting specially tailored workshops aimed at challenging perceptions and to show that the key subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are fun. The South West Marine Careers Conference at the National Marine Aquarium on July 12 will offer young people from 14 to 24 and their families a great opportunity to learn more about the marine sector against the incredible backdrop of the UK’s largest marine aquarium. And it’s free. On July 16 and 17 the STEM M400 Big Splash Tinside Lido and conference will provide a funfilled, interactive day, with students learning about
£7,000 Lottery boost for park The Friends of Devonport Park have been awarded a grant of more than £7000 from the Big Lottery Awards for All.
The Friends will use the £7150 grant for our its ‘Pop up Allotments’ project in Devonport Park. This will see the creation of eight purpose-built raised planters which will be available for community use to encourage fruit and vegetable growing. Help and advice will be provided by the Friends of Devonport Park’s own voluntary gardening team and their retained horticultural consultant, Dennis Trewin. To celebrate this award, a Healthy Living Community Fun Day will be held at the end of June, where members of the public will be able to celebrate by entering their own home grown produce into a fun fruit and vegetable show. The year-long project will enable anyone who has an interest in trying to produce their own food to enjoy the experience of doing so, even if they don’t have a garden of their own.

City Council in moves to protect Plymouth’s historic post-war buildings
Plymouth’s unique post-war architecture could enjoy more planning protection under moves to create a new conservation area in the city centre. Plymouth City Council is considering the designation, with Royal Parade and Civic Square at its heart of a new conservation area. It would take in New George Street to the north; Raleigh Street, Derry’s Cross, Athenaeum Lane to the west; Notte Street to the South; and Old Town Street, St Andrews Cross and abutting the western boundary of the Barbican Conservation Area to the east. If the conservation area is agreed, as well as protecting the buildings, the new status would mean the area is eligible for funding from external organisations such as Historic England. Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning said: “Quite simply there are very few places quite like it. Plymouth has a wealth of post-modern architecture and it all tells the extraordinary story of Plymouth.” The area being considered forms an important part of Plymouth’s City Centre, which was rebuilt, following its destruction during World War Two, based on A Plan for Plymouth 1943 by Professor Patrick Abercrombie and James Paton Watson. Within the proposed conservation area are a number of Grade II listed buildings including Royal Bank of Scotland at St Andrew’s Cross, the Theatre Royal, Derry’s Clock Tower, the Bank Pub, the Council House and Civic Centre, Catharine Street Baptist Church, the former Barclay’s Bank and Unitarian Church. There are also buildings, which although not listed, are regarded as ‘local heritage interest which make a significant contribution to the overall character and appearance of the area’. This includes House of Fraser and buildings next to it, the group of buildings between the former Derry’s Department Store and Pearl Assurance Building and the former Reel Cinema. It’s not just buildings being considered – outdoor spaces in this location are also helping to make the case, including the Grade II listed Civic Square and the tree-lined Royal Parade. Councillor Coker added: “We recognised the heritage significance of our city centre and want to ensure that changes we need to keep people flocking here happen, but in a way that preserves and enhances the character of our most significant heritage assets. We believe this designation will play an important part in helping us to achieve what we set out to achieve in the Joint Local Plan, improving the city centre and protecting our heritage assets.” Simon Hickman, principal inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas for Historic England (South West), said: “Plymouth is a unique example of a British city centre that was completely replanned following the devastation of World War II. The vision for a new city saw the creation of these heroic wide boulevards flanked by striking – and often beautiful - modern buildings. Major changes are already in the pipeline with planning applications submitted to refurbish Norwich Union House and public areas around Old Town Street and New George Street, as well as the refurbishment of the Civic Centre. People can comment on the proposals until June 30. The proposed Conservation Area designation will go to Cabinet in July. If approved, the area will be formally designated as a Conservation Area.

Interns celebrate graduation with smiles - and paid work Nine interns from the supported internship programme, Project SEARCH, became proud graduates after receiving their diplomas at a ceremony in front of parents, relatives, colleagues and friends.
Project SEARCH is a partnership between University Hospitals Plymouth, Pluss, Serco and City College Plymouth, who work together to create employment opportunities for young adults living in Plymouth who have learning disabilities. The programme involves nine months of an intensive work based internship aimed at developing and learning new work skills with the aim of gaining paid employment. The ceremony was held at the Derriford Centre for Health and Wellbeing, where the students and their guests heard about the various internships the group had undertaken, their experiences and the skills and confidence they acquired from their time working within the hospital. Richard Crompton, chairman of University Hospitals Plymouth, presented graduates with their diplomas at the ceremony. “This is an absolutely fabulous achievement for our interns,” said Richard. “I want to say thank you to Pip and the team, the partners, the Trust staff who offered work placements and the families who have made project SEARCH possible. Most importantly, I would like to thank the nine interns who have brought so much joy and enthusiasm to the Trust. For everything we’ve given to this year’s interns, they’ve given back far more.” Project SEARCH intern, Taryn Cliff, was delighted to gain paid employment with Serco as a general porter following his internship with them. “I’m pleased that I’ve been able to get paid work, it’s been what I’ve been working towards whilst on Project SEARCH,” said Taryn.
“It gives me the chance to earn my own money, and further develop my skills that I learnt by doing my internships.” Dylan Walsh also gained paid employment with the Trust as an administration apprentice through Project SEARCH. “Knowing I had got a paid job was the best feeling ever,” said Dylan. “Knowing how far I have come since starting Project SEARCH, gives me the feeling that I am a proper adult now having my own money to spend.” Pluss employment advisor, Pip Critten said: “The staff and mentors in Serco and Theatres have, as always, been fantastic in supporting
and developing the interns. “We are also so grateful for the support we get from staff at Jobcentre Plus and Access to Work which enables the interns to fulfil their dreams of paid employment.“ “Each of the interns have been on an incredible journey putting in an immense amount of effort to prove that they will make ideal employees with all the ethics that employers are looking for.” Since Project SEARCH started, more than 80 interns have gained paid employment working within Derriford Hospital and with its subcontractors, including three of this year’s interns.
Vital help for people with long term health conditions Improving Lives Plymouth delivers a free, four week course called ‘My Health, My Way’ which helps people develop knowledge, skills and confidence to selfmanage the challenges of living with a long term condition (LTC).
The course is delivered as part of the Longterm Conditions Self Management service at Improving Lives. Nichola Royal lives with the chronic pain of fibromyalgia (also known as central sensitisation disorder) and she was a delegate on one of the courses held earlier
this year at Improving Lives Plymouth’s Mannamead Wellbeing Hub. Nichola’s job as a biomedical scientist with the NHS became too much for her shortly after the birth of her baby. Chronic fatigue, pain and sensory overload were eventually diagnosed as fibromyalgia after she used her scientific skills to narrow down the options and ask her GP to confirm. She found it hard to explain to her family, and was getting defeated by her inability to do the things she used to do until she was referred to the Long Term Conditions Self Management team. She joined nine others with a wide range of LTCs and received support from trained volunteers, most of whom live with long term conditions themselves and so have empathy for course delegates. “It was a relief to be able to talk about my condition with others who had similar experiences,” she said. “It’s a safe place to find tools to manage life.” People attending the courses (soon to be held in a wider selection of community
venues) can include carers as well as those with an LTC. During weekly, 3½ hour workshops, people gain skills to manage their condition; they set achievable goals, meet others and talk about their experiences. For someone who is isolated and whose family can often become frustrated with them, the adaptable course can be life changing; it helps them to explain their difficulties to others in a way they can understand. “The course helps you find ways to explain how you’re feeling to those who love you but often don’t get it,” said Nichola. “It gives you some hope that you are normal, just a different normal. “I learned to set achievable goals for myself,” she said, “and to accept ‘that’s OK for me’; it helps you become more positive and kind to yourself.” Long term conditions self management coordinator, Lorraine Grave said that they are looking to expand into more venues, so they need more volunteers. “Ideally volunteers will have their own experience of living with a long term condition; full training is given and we expect them to facilitate two, four week courses a year. The courses are very informal and rewarding - they really take the pressure off the delegates and help them find a better quality of life.” To find out more or to apply as a volunteer, go to www.improvinglivesplymouth.org. uk or call the Long Term Conditions SelfManagement team on 01752 201892, or email self-management@improvinglivesplymouth.

Patients have confidence in treatment and care by Derriford staff
A national survey has revealed that patients continue to highly rate the doctors, nurses and allied health professionals treating them, and have confidence in the treatment they receive, during their time spent in Derriford Hospital.
The independent survey, undertaken by Quality Health and standardised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), asked adult patients who were discharged from hospital during July 2018, after having spent at least one night in hospital, to rate various aspects of their stay and care. The results are intended for use by the CQC to monitor and regulate quality of care, as well as by NHS trusts to help improve patient experience.“We already know that confidence in staff providing treatment remains high, thanks to our regular Friends and Family feedback,” said Lenny Byrne, chief nurse. “It is important to view this in the context of ever-increasing operational pressures, as it is a testament to our highly skilled and passionate colleagues.” University Hospitals Plymouth’s results showed a particular reduction in the amount of noise at night created by hospital staff, which is something we had vowed to work on last year. “We know how important it is for our patients to get a good night’s sleep. We’ve been working hard to measure the levels of disturbances on our wards at night, and our Acute Care Team have been raising awareness of the need to provide a quiet and peaceful environment for our patients at night,” said Lenny. “We have also taken on-board feedback through our Making Every Experience Excellent (MEEE) programme and are currently implementing these measures across the wards, such as making a real effort to control patient pain levels, which is another area highly rated in the report. “We have also seen a continuous improvement in the overall rating of food served to inpatients as well as the support provided by staff to help with mealtimes. In fact, support is once again
Police appeal for witnesses
a common theme, with patients highly rating the care received from support staff, such as housekeepers, cleaners, porters and administrators. Patients also reported feeling well looked after emotionally by hospital staff during their stay. “We are really proud of our staff for their ongoing high level provision of emotional support to our patients,” added Lenny. “It is no surprise that our staff receive thousands of thank you cards and gestures of gratitude every day, for their tireless efforts to put patients first, even at really difficult times.” Overall, the Trust scores remained mainly the same in comparison to 2017 or had a small variance in points. There were, however, a small number of areas where the Trust’s score had gone down from the previous year’s survey.

The 45-year-old Plymouth woman was punched in the face by a man following an altercation about the victim’s dog. She sustained facial bruising and swelling as a result of the attack. The incident happened at Cattedown roundabout around 7.25am on Friday 7 June. A 56-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of assault ABH and has been released on bail until 5 July. A police spokesman said: “This assault happened on a busy roundabout on a main route into the city centre so someone must have witnessed what happened. “We would ask anyone who saw the incident or anyone who has any information to assist with the investigation to come forward.” Please email 101@dc.police.uk or phone 101, quoting crime reference number CR/050375/19.

Plymouth Lions Club’s annual Dartmoor Walk takes place on Sunday July 7.
The annual 10 mile walk will start and finish at Lee Mill and all walking teams, including families, workmates, schools and club are welcome to take part. The event is not a race and teams of all ages and abilities can join in the fun. Each team will complete the designated course and raise money through sponsorship for their own chosen charity and local Lions’ charities. Sponsorship will be split 50/50 between the two. The Lions Club organise and monitor the 10 mile walk with RAYNET at check points with refreshment tents en route. There will be a hot pasty and cuppa for all walkers on completion of the event. To register an interest contact Lion David Turvey on 01752 772536 or e-mail dpturvey16@gmail.com.
They included: • Experiencing some delays in discharges due to a wait for medicines or an ambulance • Having enough information and privacy during examinations and treatment in the Emergency Department • Feeling included by doctors in discussions • Knowing how to make a complaint “It’s really helpful to capture feedback like this from our patients and their relatives, as it helps us to understand what we are doing well, but also to help us identify areas to work on,” said Beverley Allingham, deputy chief nurse. “We have already seen a number of improvements this year in relation to being discharged from hospital, as a result of prioritising improvements to the discharge pathway. We are undertaking further work around discharge medications and making a real effort to improve communication to patients and carers, especially around transport. “The pressure faced by our Emergency Department is constantly increasing, but we hope this will be eased by the expected expansion in 2022, and having more space will of course support privacy and dignity. Information about how to get in contact with the Patient Advice and Liaison Service and complaints team are now on noticeboards on all wards, and the welcome centre is now open every week day. “Finally, we are really pleased to acknowledge the consistently improving scores for providing family, friends and carers with all the information that they need to help care for patients, especially since we introduced the Carers Policy in 2017, recognising the importance of promoting the patient carer relationship to support patient experience, wellbeing and discharge from hospital.” A total of 570 patients discharged by University Hospitals Plymouth were surveyed. There was a 47% response rate, above the national average of 45%. The National Inpatient Survey 2018 involved 144 NHS acute trusts in England and in total, 76,668 responses were received from service users.

Opera singer William entertains members of Moor’s Edge U3A Opera singer William Shimell was the guest speaker at the June meeting of Moor’s Edge U3A
Baritone William played a variety of recordings from stages in his career, having started as a chorister at Westminster Abbey and then training at the Guildhall School of Music. In 1979 he joined Kent Opera touring, first in the chorus, then as an understudy for main roles, eventually taking a leading role in ‘Cosi fan Tutti’. He has performed in opera worldwide and also oratorios in various cathedrals. After a successful audition with conductor Riccardo Muti he sang at La Scala, Milan. More recently he has appeared in films in non-singing roles - with Juliette Binoche in Certified Copy, Amour and Aloft. He has now retired from opera but sings with the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir who have raised £4,000 with their CD ‘I’ll Walk Beside You’ for St Luke’s Hospice. Moor’s Edge U3A interest groups have had a busy month. The Garden Visits group visited Fardel Manor, a 14th century manor house which was open for St Luke’s and afterwards went to see the Cornwood Flower Festival. A pleasant day was divided between Pentillie near Saltash and Tamar Nurseries. At Pentillie some had a stroll along a woodland walk to the kitchen gardens and on to the Mausoleum and others took the path down to the river. Eight members braved a rather wet Sunday to attend Horrabridge Open Gardens and were able to see ‘hidden’ gardens full of unusual plants and water features. The visit included a pleasant snack at the Leaping Salmon and St Luke’s Hospice benefitted from this event to the tune of £2,000. The Music Events group have enjoyed several events including Tubular Bells for Two at The Wharf, Tavistock which was performed by two very talented musicians. Several members of the group went to the Guildhall to hear the South West Philharmonia play Dan Forrest’s Lux and sing songs from Les Miserables which were both very well received. At the History Group’s meeting there was a continuation of the theme of cinemas in Plymouth with slides showing the present condition of these buildings which members remembered visiting in their youth, by name - Belgrave, Cinedrome, Plaza, Royal, Gaumont, Drake, Odeon, State Cinema, Ford Palladium, Forum and, in addition, the Palace Theatre. The Photography Group viewed their pictures of the Delamore Sculpture Exhibition and accidental numbers and letters occurring in nature and Arty Crafty members continued their projects involving knitting, crocheting, embroidery, painting and beading whilst the Family History Group once again visited Southway Library to use Find My Family and Ancestry software. The Science and Technology Group met at the Lopes Arms and had a talk about the Curta Calculator, a mechanical device invented in the Seconds World War which continued in production until the 1970s when electronic calculators became common. Members also visited the Devonport Energy from Waste Facility. Moor’s Edge U3A group meet at the Woolwell Centre on the second Thursday of each month at 2.30pm. If you are retired or semi-retired why not come and join us? We welcome visitors to our members’ monthly meetings twice before deciding if they would like to join. Once joined you can then participate in a variety of interest groups. Diary Dates: July 11 at the Woolwell Centre: talk from Andy Hall on Hospital Radio at 2.30pm. No meeting in August; September 12 Monthly Meeting/Birthday Party.

Teenager’s sky dive raises funds for hospital charity A teenager from Plympton has raised over £1,000 for Plymouth Hospitals Charity by taking part in a tandem skydive.
Despite his fear of heights, 16-year-old Daniel - who is a pupil at Hele’s School - took the 15,000ft leap from a moving plane to raise money for the Mustard Tree Cancer Support Centre at Derriford Hospital . The skydive was a birthday present for Daniel and he decided to use the opportunity to raise money for the Mustard Tree on behalf of his friend, Kayleigh Eve. Kayleigh found a lump in her breast in July 2017 and at just 29-years-old, she was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. After a successful operation to remove the cancerous lump, Kayleigh embarked on her treatment journey of 15 rounds of radiotherapy. “Although this time was incredibly tough, I remained positive and started every day with a smile,” said Kayleigh. “I could not have gone through this tough and challenging time without the help of the Mustard Tree. Whether it was the offer of a cup of tea after I finished my treatment or just a little chat and a few words of
Daniel hands over the cheque
encouragement; they were amazing.” During her 12 month check-up in August 2018, pre-cancerous cells were found in Kayleigh’s other breast. This meant further surgery, and 15 more sessions of radiotherapy
Daniel overcame his fear to do the tandem sky dive for charity
which she completed in January. “I have now become an advocate for young people who are affected by cancer and I’m working very closely with the Mustard Tree to ensure that this is supported. “When you are diagnosed with cancer, the physical aspects of having this disease are much easier to deal with than the emotional implications.“ All of this was made so much easier thanks to the support of the staff and resources at the Mustard Tree. They offer a safe, nonclinical place to sit and think, make friends or just sit and talk. They have helped me enormously in my journey and I want to thank them in any way I can. “I want to say a huge thank you to Daniel for offering to do this skydive while raising money for the Mustard Tree. It will make such a difference to cancer patients and their families. On behalf of all the wonderful friends that I have made on this journey I want to say thank you to Daniel for being such a selfless, brave man.”
‘Get a jab, give a jab’ initiative donates thousands to worldwide tetanus projects Staff at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust have donated over £2,000 towards immunising expectant mothers and young children against tetanus. As part of this year’s flu campaign, the Trust took part in the UNICEF initiative to ‘Get a jab, give a jab’, which encourages staff to take up the option of the free flu vaccine and, in turn, help donate towards inoculating people in developing countries. The amount of staff who received their jab this year has provided a donation of 24,300 tetanus inoculations, against a disease that kills around 34,000 newborns each year and damages the health of many more worldwide. A spokesperson for UNICEF said: “Our sincerest thanks to everyone at the Trust who took part in the Get a Jab, Give a Jab campaign which helped to raise an incredible £2,067. This donation is a truly
remarkable achievement. “From Yemen to Papua New Guinea, we’re helping to prevent this disease being contracted, with 46 countries eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus since 2000. We rely entirely on supporters like you to carry out our important work so thank you so much for choosing
to support the life-saving work of UNICEF. Together we can build a safer world for children.” Dr Phil Hughes, medical director, at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, was also pleased with the additional impact the scheme, funded by income the Trust receives for the flu campaign, has had. “We
are delighted with the increased numbers of staff who took up the option of their flu vaccine this year”, he said. “Over a thousand more members of staff received the vaccination which, in turn, resulted in the fantastic contribution to help combat tetanus in developing countries. We are very pleased that our flu campaign has gone beyond making a difference at a local level here in the Trust. I’d like to thank the near 5,000 of our staff who responded and received their vaccination this year proving they are prepared to protect themselves, their families and, most importantly our patients during the winter months. “We have a big team of vaccinators and trainers who do such a fantastic job in making themselves available to offer the jab to our staff. They are from a variety of professions across the Trust, and I would like to thank them all for their efforts.”

St Luke’s fundraisers will never walk alone Plymouth’s brightest mass participation event takes to the streets this summer, with teams from Plymouth Argyle and Wolferstans Solicitors proving fundraising is more fun with friends at this year’s St Luke’s Midnight Walk on Saturday July 20.
Just some of the team from Wolferstans who will be taking part in St Luke’s Midnight Walk
Open air treat for film fans
This year’s walk hopes to see thousands of women turn back time to an 80s-themed extravaganza, moving through the city to raise vital funds for end of life care for communities across Plymouth, West Devon and South East Cornwall. This is the 13th walk for women organised by the charity, often raising a six-figure sum that keeps their life-changing specialist nurses on the road through the rest of the year. Nickie Drewery from the Plymouth Argyle support team said: “I thought to myself I was going to do the Midnight Walk as the incredible St Luke’s nurses looked after my dad when he fell ill a few years ago. I mentioned it to some of the people I work with at the football club, which has a massive community spirit, and we decided to get a team together. “We’ve got a mix of everyone, from those that work in the ticket office, ladies from our schools work and those that work in the grounds on match days. We consider ourselves as much a part of the team as the players here and we want to show we’re here to support Plymouth, not just have Plymouth support us.” This year’s walk offers three routes, either three,
eight or 13 miles, meaning there’s something for everyone looking to get involved. Registration comes in at £22.84, just enough for the muchloved local charity to cover the costs of organising and managing the famous Plymouth event. It’s the generous sponsorship and donations for the walkers’ hard work on top of the fee that go towards the cost of keeping St Luke’s services running. Also walking on the night will be Fran from Higher Compton and up to 30 friends from Wolferstans Solicitors. It’s her third time taking on the course and she explained: “At the end of the day it’s the taking part that matters but working as a team means we can do more in advertising and getting the word out to raise sponsorship money. “You never know when you’re going to need St Luke’s so the more fundraising we can all do the more other families can get the really important support they need when someone close to them becomes ill. The care and help that my mum, and all our family, got from the team at St Luke’s made a difficult time much easier.” The team behind the Midnight Walk is also looking for volunteer marshals and supporters (male or female) to help along the route on the night. Please contact St Luke’s events team on 01752 492626 if you’re interested in helping. All support is hugely welcomed and makes a real difference. More details on the walk are available at www. stlukesmidnightwalk.co.uk

Derriford’s intensive care rehab team wins regional award for Care and Compassion Derriford Hospital’s Intensive Care Rehabilitation Team are the regional champions of the NHS Parliamentary Care and Compassion Award.
The Parliamentary Awards recognise the massive contribution made by individuals who work in and alongside the NHS. The ICU rehab team, lead by Kate Tantam, has been recognised for their dedication to improving rehabilitation and recovery for survivors of critical illness. They have been named regional champions for the South West of England in the ‘Care and Compassion’ category. Inspired by a patient’s story, Kate undertook an 18-month audit which showed that a third of patients developed symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder after being a patient in ICU. Kate advocated for service development to meet the need identified by her research and her energy ultimately led to the recruitment of a multi-disciplinary critical care rehabilitation team. The team is currently made up of specialist physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistants, a clinical psychologist and the animal assisted intervention team. They are also evaluating their impact and service using research, quality improvement and audit.
The research team, which is within in the ICU Rehab team, has a data analyst and expert information visualisation input from Plymouth University and students from the clinical psychology department and the school of computing. This inter-professional team has helped to shape, share and facilitate a cultural change which extends throughout and beyond the organisation. Since the introduction of the team, the ICU has been able to introduce a Pets as Therapy (PAT) initiative, which sees Hovis the Labradoodle acting as a member of the team, promoting and assisting in physical and psychological rehabilitation. The Intensive Care Unit now has a garden space of its own thanks to the determination of the team, some kind volunteers, and a lot of elbow grease to clear the unused space. The garden aids rehabilitation and promotes positive mental health for staff, patients and loved ones. Having an outdoor space also allows terminally ill patients to have their pets visit them in a non-sterile environment. All of this and more is celebrated through the #rehablegend campaign which promotes the ‘little things that the inter-professional teams can do to promote and enhance recovery’. #rehablegend is a title awarded to anyone who assists with or promotes rehabilitation. The campaign, founded by Kate,
13
Kate Tantam (left) , who leads the ICU rehab team pictured with members and Harvey, the younger brother of Hovis the ICU therapy dog and his owner Moira
has had international reach, with requests from France, Switzerland and Australia for #rehablegend light boxes and badges. “The NHS’s greatest asset is its workforce,” said Kate. “A team that irrespective of designation, role or location pull together to make a difference and to provide care. “All of the work that we have done in Plymouth is to point out the everyday excellence already embedded in these teams and say well done. Anyone can make a difference to recovery, and anyone can be a #rehablegend. The little things are the big things when it comes to care.” One patient said: “Being a patient in critical care is like chucking a hand grenade into your
life – it blows everything apart.” Kate and her team’s work aims to defuse that grenade by promoting and facilitating recovery by humanising the critical care environment and building services. Nominations for the awards were put forward by Plymouth MPs Johnny Mercer and Luke Pollard. As regional champions of the South West of England, the team have been invited to a special awards ceremony in Parliament on July 10 where the national winners will be announced. Proceedings will be hosted by Dr Sarah Wollaston, chair of the Health and Social Care Select Ceremony, with a special performance planned from the NHS Choir.

Plymouth in Jessica’s Armed Forces Day design is a winner the top 10 for Engaged Cities Award Eleven-year-old Jessica Horton from Widewell Primary Academy created the winning design for this year’s Plymouth Armed Forces Day badge.
Plymouth has been recognised for its work alongside residents to create and implement solutions that improve lives and communities.
Its groundbreaking crowdfunding ‘City Change Fund’ has helped Plymouth become one of 10 cities to reach the finals for the Cities of Service Engaged Cities Award. Over 100 cities submitted bids for the award which has a minimum $50,000 prize. Plymouth and London were the only two European cities to make the shortlist. The award, underwritten by Bloomberg Philanthropies, highlights the ways that cities are shaping the future with residents and allows cities around the world to learn best practices and implement similar solutions in their own cities. The shortlisting follows on from the project’s recent triumph when it was awarded the highest accolade given by the Royal Town Planning Institute – the Silver Jubilee Cup. The City Change Fund uses Crowdfund Plymouth to distribute funds raised by developments through the Community Infrastructure Levy. Since 2015, the council has pledged over £250,000 on 60 projects with the Crowdfund Plymouth platform, raising over £1.5 million in the city. Projects include many from social enterprises delivering projects that are close to local peoples’ hearts. Campaigns have included improving local green space, such as Collings Park Trust to a sonic art silent disco at Devil’s Point. The council uses the Crowdfunder website to distribute the ‘neighbourhood proportion’ and pledges up to 50 per cent of a project’s costs (up to a maximum of £20,000), if they meet the legislative and Council’s criteria and priorities. Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing and Cooperative Development said: “This means a lot. “What we set up in Plymouth to make a huge difference to our residents is making people sit up and take notice around the world. “The City Change Fund has helped us reconnect to communities and city groups in a way we never thought possible. It’s people power and helping our residents make some incredible events and ideas happen – through contributions made by developers. Myung J. Lee, Cities of Service executive director said: “The 10 finalist cities show the power said:f working alongside their residents to improve lives and provide a model for others to follow.” Cities of Service received more than 100 applications from cities in the Americas and Europe. With help from an esteemed group of experts, Cities of Service chose 10 finalists, whose solutions achieved impact by engaging citizens in a variety of ways including: impact volunteering, participatory design, crowdsourcing, and citizen-sourced data. The Engaged Cities Award was open to cities with populations of 30,000+ in the Americas and Europe. Cities of Service will choose up to three winning cities and award a total of at least $50,000. Winners will be announced at CityLab in October. For more information visit www. engagedcitiesaward.org
Pupils from schools across Plymouth have been competing to create a badge which represents the spirit of Armed Forces Day. Jessica’s winning design shows the iconic Smeaton’s Tower with the Mayflower ship in the centre, against a background of the Devon flag. Her creativity and colourful design really impressed the judges. Jessica’s pin badge was sold at the Tourist information Centre on the Barbican and the Royal British Legion Pop In Centre on Armada Way for a suggested £3 donation. The badge was also available to buy at Plymouth Armed Forces Day from the Military Kid’s Club (MKC) Heroes tent in the Royal Navy Village. All money raised from badge sales goes to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Last year’s badge raised £1,625. The badge competition is sponsored by Plymouth Military Kid’s Club (MKC Heroes), a tri-service support network for the children of service men and women. The group was formed in Plymouth in 2010 with now the biggest cluster in the country with over 60 member schools. In total, there are more than 10,000 members across the country. Pete Ogburn, one of the founders of MKC Heroes, visited the school to break the exciting news to Jessica who was very proud to be awarded first place and her father, an army veteran himself, was delighted her design won. Susanne Archard, area manager for The Royal British Legion, said: “Very well done to Jessica for her winning colourful and imaginative design. It’s great that all the children across Plymouth involved in the competition had this opportunity to think about what their Armed Forces and City
Armed Forces Badge competition winner Jessica Horton pictured with Claire Prynne, headteacher of Widewell Primary School and Andrea Pegg, MKC Heroes co-ordinator at Widewell
means to them. “All the money raised from donations for the badges helps to fund the vital services and the support the Legion offers to those who are serving and those who have served, their families and dependants. I’m certainly looking forward to wearing Jessica’s badge at
Armed Forces Day.” Jessica won £75 for her badge design with the runners up winning £50 and £25. Jessica received her prize at the Armed Forces Day Flag Raising Ceremony on June 24, which marked the official start of Armed Forces Week.
Apprentice Rose-Marie celebrates An apprentice at a Plymstock surgery is celebrating after achieving a top rating in a key assessment. Rose-Marie Marsh, 27, achieved a distinction in her business administration apprenticeship End Point Assessment, while training at Skills Group and working at Church View Surgery in Plymstock. The End Point Assessment (EPA) is a brand new rigorous testing process forming part of the apprenticeship reforms that are being rolled out nationally. The EPA and Apprenticeship Standard replace Frameworks, and are designed to develop and test the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in the profession. Rose-Marie, who lives in Beacon Park, said: “I wanted to pursue a career in the health care industry as it is very rewarding being able to help people. In my previous employment I always preferred the business and administrative roles. “The opportunity to complete my business administration apprenticeship at the surgery was a perfect fit for me. I am very proud that I achieved a distinction and the result has boosted my selfconfidence in my abilities to perform well.” For the Level 3 business administrator apprenticeship, Rose-Marie had to complete workbased assignments and run her own project. For this, she chose to create a monthly staff newsletter with the aim of improving internal communication and boosting morale with good news stories. Rose-Marie also had to plan and hold her own meetings, including video conferencing, and take part in recorded verbal discussions and observations. Chloe Fenner-Smith, operations manager at Church View Surgery, said: “Rose-Marie has done extremely well gaining her distinction whilst successfully learning many of the aspects of surgery administrative roles.
Rose-Marie Marsh and Chloe Fenner-Smith, operations manager at Church View Surgery
“This has enabled Rose-Marie to be multi skilled within the surgery and also now have a nationally recognised qualification behind her. We are all very proud of the achievement Rose-Marie has accomplished, well done!” Rose-Marie started her apprenticeship in January 2018 and has now been offered a permanent position at Church View Surgery as a medical administrator. She said: “I am delighted to have been offered a position at the surgery and look forward to my future career here. I would like to build on my experience and hopefully move up into more senior positions. Thank you to Skills Group for such a wonderful opportunity and I hope to progress onto my Level 4 business administration
qualification.” Sharon Chaffe, Skills Group managing director said: “We are proud of Rose-Marie’s success. The distinction highlights her hard work and commitment to her training, as well as recognising our dedicated team and their efforts in preparing our learners for the EPA at our state-of-the-art training facilities. “Congratulations also to the team at Church View Surgery who have supported Rose-Marie throughout her employment. Rose-Marie is proof that apprenticeships work, combining on-the-job training with study to ensure the learner receives a thorough and practical start to their career. We look forward to following Rose-Marie’s progress in the future.”

Guest of honour Peter Shilton pictured with Argyle’s new manager Ryan Lowe and other dignatories at the official opening of the Manadon Sports Hub
A new multi-million-pound sports hub in Manadon which is expected to support 30,000 people taking part in physical activity a year has been officially opened.
The facility which includes a floodlit third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch, one adult and one junior grass football pitches, a new artificial cricket wicket, eight grass wickets and a four-team changing pavilion was made possible thanks to investment from Argyle Community Trust, Plymouth City Council, the Premier League, The FA, Football Foundation, Sport England and the England and Wales Cricket Board. After Plymouth City Council and the Argyle Community Trust netted an £880,000 grant from the Football Foundation towards the project, work started on the site in February 2018. The sports hub is based on the site of the former Ministry of Defence pitches on St Peter’s Road and is set to become an integral venue for community sport in the local area. Mark Lovell, head of community, Argyle Community Trust said: “This space is more than just a place where people play sport, but it will be a place that the community can use at its centre for education and social events. “The project has involved a great deal of planning and I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Plymouth City Council and all the partners involved. “It has been a genuine partnership throughout and a source of huge pride that the facility is now open to the public. There is no doubt the Manadon Sports Hub is the largest project ever undertaken by the Trust and a reflection of the progress we have made over the past decade. “Working in unison with Plymouth City Council and Argyle Community Trust, it is a very special moment seeing the community enjoying this fantastic facility.” The venue will be open to everybody from schools, small sided football leagues and football development to private parties, fitness classes, health and wellbeing activities as well as disability sports, Frisbee clubs and community sessions. Guests at the official opening were given an exclusive tour of the new facility and were able to see school children competing in a football tournament on the 3G pitch as well as players from Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough cricket club using the cricket nets. There was also a surprise appearance from former England footballer and Argyle legend Peter Shilton who was delighted to be back in the city where Peter secured his first management job with a three-and-a-half-year stay, getting Plymouth Argyle into the playoffs in only his second season. Peter said he was delighted to have been
invited to the event. He added: “I really enjoyed my time in Plymouth...the people here are fantastic.” Peter was accompanied at the event by Paul Hart, secretary of Argyle Legends and Argyle’s newly-appointed manager Ryan Lowe. The Manadon Sports and Community Hub will Former Argyle manager Peter Shilton with the club’s newly appointed boss Ryan Lowe
be one of the best sports facilities in the city and will see the return of many cricket teams being based and able to play within the city boundary after many dedicated spaces disappeared for the sport in Plymouth. Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “This fantastic new facility has been years in the planning but absolutely worth the wait. “It’s not just somewhere to play sport – it’s been designed with the whole community in mind, with spaces for all sorts of physical, health,
education and social activities that really bring people together. “The all-weather pitch has been massively popular and now the main pavilion is open people of all ages and abilities can really start to get the best out of the facilities and sessions on offer. Once the grass pitches and wickets are complete, we will be well on our way to establishing Plymouth’s first cricket and football development hub and bringing cricket home again. “We’re proud to have worked alongside the Argyle Community Trust to transform what used to be a run-down and underused site into what is, without doubt, one of the best sports facilities in the city.” Partner clubs Kitto All Saints, YMCA All Saints, SB Frankfort and Plymouth Parkway FC all play at the Manadon hub and the new facilities will provide them with improved all-year round access for training and match play. YMCA All Saints are also a FA Charter Standard Community Club and will be able to deliver football sessions at the site for people with learning difficulties such as autism and ADHD. Devon FA identified the site as a strategic priority to focus on growing football development opportunities within the local area. By working alongside the partner clubs the aim is to create an additional 13 teams playing at St Peter’s Road over the next five years. Team growth will primarily focus on youth football and it is projected that female teams will double from five to ten teams. The sports hub will also be used to deliver coach education by Plymouth YMCA and Devon FA. With an emphasis on coaching opportunities directly supporting the partner clubs and local community it will enable the football coaching workforce to organically grow.

Due to Tops Day Nurseries being one of the UK’s most eco sustainable family of day nurseries, Claire from Surfers Against Sewage was supportive of the open day and unveiled an opening plaque which is proudly displayed outside of Tops Efford and Tops Bretonside. Tops Efford, based at Dell Children’s Centre
boasts a large, secure garden which the children took great pride in showing off to their special visitor, whilst showing Claire all of their new natural resources. Inside the children demonstrated their knowledge of how to protect the environment by taking part in a litter picking activity as well as saving marine animals in a water tray by using nets to fish out plastic pollution. At Tops Bretonside Claire was impressed with a ‘Don’t throw it, show it’ eco display board and the opportunity for children to explore nature through their well utilised garden and mud kitchen. Claire was also shown the bamboo toothbrushes used across the Tops family and learnt more about the real nappy campaign, which is backed by the charity GECCO. Dom Ferris, education manager with Surfers Against Sewage said: “With almost 1000 schools and nurseries across the UK joining our Plastic Free Schools movement we get to see and hear many wonderful stories of positive, pupil-led campaigning. However every now and then a story like this stands out! “Surfers Against Sewage would like to thank and celebrate the students and staff of Tops Day Nurseries for their ‘above and beyond’ work to remove single-use plastics and inspiring others to do the same. “We can’t wait to see the Plastic Free plaques too!” Left: Claire Bradford from Surfers Against Sewage chatting with youngsters at Efford Right: Claire with Tops Day Nurseries managing director Cheryl Hadland and the Tops plastic free pledge banner

Hailey added: “With plenty to discover and explore, Wimbledon on the Green is just one of the many activities on offer as part of the Yard’s bursting events calendar. From the monthly Good Food and Craft Market that showcases the finest artisan creations, to making the most of the surrounding coast with a wealth of marina activity or soaking up some live music, the Yard has experiences aplenty to enjoy this summer.”

OUTGOING DEPUTY LORD MAYOR HELPS HOSPITAL RADIO MARK 50 YEARS OF BROADCASTING As one of his final duties before leaving office, Plymouth’s outgoing Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Chris Mavin unveiled a plaque at Hospital Radio Plymouth’s Bircham House studios to mark the station’s 50th year of broadcasting.
Representatives from a number of organisations, including the Lions Club of Plymouth, local Freemasons, the Royal Eye Infirmary League of Friends, Tor Bridge High School and the University College of St Mark and St John, turned out for the event and a tour of the studios and to meet some of the station’s presenters. Later Cllr Mavin took part in a programme with Dawn Cawley, who is now into her 22nd year broadcasting on the station, and Dawn asked him
about some of the things he had done during his year in office as Deputy Lord Mayor and he also read out some requests chosen by listeners in wards at Derriford Hospital. During his visit Cllr Mavin also spoke with pupils and staff from Tor Bridge High which is situated in his own electoral ward of Moor View. Year 7 and 8 pupils from the school have been making recordings in their drama lessons for the Tor Bridge High Radio Show which is broadcast on Hospital Radio Plymouth on Sunday afternoons at 4pm. The station is now planning a formal 50th anniversary dinner for current and past members of the station. Enquiries about this can be sent to 50@hospitalradioplymouth.org,uk Cllr Mavin with Hospital Radio volunteers and staff and pupils from Tor Bridge High

Boniface students scoop first prize in NHS careers contest Four boys from St Boniface’s Catholic College have been crowned regional winners of Health Education England’s Step into the NHS secondary school competition.
Don Yeldo, Khalid Tijani, Naz Ahmed and Alberto Bromeo, all aged 14, created a jigsaw about the role of a paramedic to scoop the South West regional award. They beat 117 other entries from the region. The Step into the NHS contest, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, aims to showcase the breadth of career options in the NHS and combat gender stereotypes while giving students valuable job-seeking skills for the future. All entrants were asked to research their dream NHS career and design a creative advert and job description. A delighted Don said on behalf of the winners: “Taking part in the competition was great as we got the chance to explore all the different jobs you can do as part of the NHS which we didn’t know about before. We worked really hard on our entry, which was about paramedics, and had to put a lot of thought into it. “Creating the jigsaw was really interesting and a great way to learn about what paramedics do. We think that the jigsaw we’ve created is really fun!” Rachael Hudson, vocational and careers coordinator at St Boniface’s Catholic College, added: “The pupils thoroughly enjoy taking part in this competition. “It’s a great opportunity to see groups of students working together as a team and thinking outside the box. We’re extremely proud of our students and the innovative puzzle they made for the competition.” Professor Ian Cumming, chief executive, Health Education England, commented: “I have been delighted by the wide variety of roles that have featured in this year’s entries, ranging from drama therapists to paramedics and nurses. It’s a true celebration of the NHS and the numerous careers on offer. “It’s more important than ever that we act now to inspire the next generation of NHS staff. Step into the NHS supports this by showcasing its fantastic careers. “I would like to congratulate all the pupils who entered this year, and particularly our regional and national winners.” More information about Step into the NHS can be found at: https://www.stepintothenhs.nhs.uk/ schools

Plymouth leads the way in dealing with effects of childhood trauma The community of Ernesettle is leading the NSPCC’s flagship Together for Childhood programme with organisations across Plymouth working with local residents to develop and test ways to best protect children. The Together for Childhood team provide the latest monthly update on its work to keep children safe from sexual abuse.
Plymouth will become one of the first cities in the country to try an innovative new approach to tackling the effects of childhood trauma. The City Council’s Cabinet is going to be making a commitment to support the work of a Trauma-Informed Network to understand the impact of childhood trauma on people’s behaviour in adulthood. There is a strong link between the experience of multiple childhood traumas and adverse outcomes in adulthood ranging from criminal offending to drug and alcohol misuse, poor mental health and obesity. Plymouth’s Trauma-Informed Network is made up of more than 70 professionals, from a number of different agencies including; Devon and Cornwall Police, city schools, Barnardos, NSPCC, Harbour, Devon CCG and Plymouth City Council, all with insight of how trauma can affect people. The network will start to look at a system wide approach to tackling the effects of trauma by:
Photo: Pixabay © Myriam Zilles
• preventing traumas occurring in the first place • promoting protective factors for all children • recognising the behaviours that may be the result of trauma and intervening appropriately • helping adults who are already suffering adverse consequences Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet Member for Customer Focus and Community Safety said: “We know that for some people the effects of a childhood trauma such as sexual
abuse, domestic violence or the death of a parent can have a lasting impact on them which often leads to drug and alcohol abuse, offending and risk taking behaviour. “We also know that we need a city wide approach to be able to support people and help them understand their past traumas to be able to support them to move forward with their lives.” The development of Plymouth into a trauma informed city will ensure more effective treatment is offered through joined up services that think about the person as a
whole and what experiences they have had, rather than a one size fits all response. To move the project forward, two workers from the Plymouth NSPCC office and a representative from Barnardo’s will be spending some regular time with Plymouth City Council’s Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) to share knowledge, and understand more about the council’s perspective on Trauma Informed Intervention. They have found there are many crossovers between this the ‘Trauma Informed’ building block and the ‘Preventing Offending and Harmful Sexual Behaviour’ building block, and that research and knowledge spans both areas. Better understanding the effects traumatic events can have on someone, or how adverse childhood experiences impact later life can help us understand or prevent offending or harmful sexual behaviour. The overall aim is to help people get the help and support that they need so that situations don’t escalate and harm is prevented. If you want to find out more about Together for Childhood contact the NSPCC in Plymouth at Plymouth.Servicecentre@nspcc.org.uk or 01752 422577 or visit the NSPCC website. Adults with a concern about the welfare of a child can contact the NSPCC’s helpline for advice and support on 0808 800 5000 or help@nspcc.org.uk. Children can contact Childline on 0800 1111 or childline.org.uk 24/7, 365 days a year.

Pals Harry and David to take part in charity ‘Incubator Push’ for Keep Me Close appeal Two young boys who owe their lives to the skill of staff at Derriford Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be taking part in a charity Incubator Push later this month.
Six year olds Harry Hepburn and David Wade-Gibson were both born prematurely and spent time in the care of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Today the pair are good friends and both attend Whitleigh Primary School. They will be joined by around 20 other children and adults on July 27 on the 10 mile Incubator Push. The walk aims to raise awareness and funds for the Keep Me Close appeal, which helps with accommodation for parents of premature children in the NICU. Harry’s mum Ellie, who will be taking part in the walk said: “The aim of the charity is to raise enough money to build accommodation for parents who have babies on the unit. “At the moment, there is very limited space for parents, and priority is given to the parents whose babies are very sick. Many parents face the daily agony of walking away and leaving their sick babies, and possibly travelling miles to get home. “My youngest son, Harry, was born very prematurely six years ago, and spent over two months in the NICU at Derriford. I was very fortunate, in that I live in Plymouth, and only had to get the bus home. I can only imagine how awful it must be to get that dreaded phone call in the middle of the night, saying that you need to come to the hospital as soon as possible, but to be miles away.” She said that she and many other parents who have been through the NICU ‘rollercoaster of a journey’ feel so passionately about supporting the Keep Me Close charity. Ellie said: “We will be leaving Derriford Hospital at around 8am on July 27, with an incubator, and pushing it all the way to the city centre and back again. “We will have collection buckets for people to donate any loose change they may have, but this is also largely about raising awareness and not just funds. “My boy Harry will be doing as much of the walk as he can manage but he has a chronic kidney condition, so it is unlikely he will do the whole walk. My four year old daughter Ivy will also be with us on the walk.” David, who was on NICU at the same time as Harry will be doing the walk for the second year running. Ellie added: “Harry and David fought for their lives at the same time on the neonatal unit, they shared an ambulance to Bristol when they needed operations while on NICU, and they also started at the same school together. It is quite a remarkable friendship NICU warriors then friends. “The staff on NICU are amazing, they not only work miracles saving tiny lives, but they support the families of these special babies too. The NICU journey is life changing, and myself and many other parents try to show our gratitude by taking part in these events, to give a little back to the unit to which we owe so much,” she said. NICU cares for babies from all over the South West and babies are often transferred in from other hospitals for a higher level of

care when needed. It is the only ward of its type this side of Bristol. NICU cares for over 1,000 babies and their families every year from in and around the South West. Because of the nature of the babies NICU cares for, parents are encouraged to remain close by to promote bonding, maternal and paternal mental health as well as getting involved in their baby’s care which is in itself vital to the development of their child. The unit houses as many parents as possible at its on-site accommodation. This is generally reserved for those parents who are displaced away from their home hospital and currently the unit is only able to house four sets of parents. With extreme preterm infants who can expect a stay in hospital for over 100 days, it is an extremely expensive and long time to be away from your home and immediate family.

Living to the audience of one... THE
By Chris Cole, Founder of Cross Rhythms
Experience
I recently heard a great phrase from somebody very close to me. The phrase was: ‘that Jesus had a lot of fans, but not necessarily followers.’
It was in the context of the two of us discussing what authentic Christian spirituality looked like. This person had gone through a seriously traumatic and tough time but had not let go of their faith in Christ Jesus, despite the very real pain of their circumstances. At the same time because of that deep spiritual faith and connection with God they were also able to be real with their emotions going through the process, thus revealing their emotional and relational intelligence. When it comes to an answer for people’s growing challenges with mental health, loneliness and issues of wellbeing, a connection with ‘our Creator’ provides an anchor in the incredible storms of life that we are all prone to experience at some time or other. Jesus Himself said: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because
I have overcome the world.” John 16 v 33. The phrase I mentioned at the start of this article can be likened to a football analogy: I know some really committed football fans who are absolutely dedicated to their clubs, but with respect to everybody who follows a club they don’t play at a professional level for the team. Playing seriously on the pitch where the rules of the game are quite exacting, and every member of the team must train to experience the games being won or lost is a demanding process. Win on the pitch and you have more fans, lose and you’re in big trouble. It’s the stuff of life that besets us all. That is why I recommend to our church members: “live to the audience of one” because Jesus is the only one who truly judges you fairly whether you win or lose with some of the choices that are Chris Cole
made on the journey of life. I’ve been around the church community for almost forty years and much of it is wonderful with many people trying their best to be a support to their teammates, but the church is still made up of people on a journey requiring increased healing, maturity and in need of constant training or what the church calls discipleship. Christianity is a lifestyle that requires training and only truly works if the individual applies his or herself to the process. I believe that if you come to church with a hungry heart to know about God, you’ll receive a revelation of communication from His heart to yours, not just some religious information solely to your head. The essential issues of life come out of the spiritual heart of a human being. Courage; faithfulness; hope; true love and the

meaning of life are more than a process of the cerebral intellect gathering information. They are part of a wonderful process of training which reveals a person’s identity, intrinsic value and purpose for living in both this life and the next. It is anything, but boring. There is a great Christian apologist called Ravi Zacharias who you can watch on YouTube at any time and who debates at Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton and Yale, to name a few places of learning originally established as Christian Universities. He has a phrase for his organisation which says RZIM (Ravi Zacharias International Ministries) has been set up “to help those who think to believe and those who believe to think.” We need to employ both head and heart in balance to handle the challenges that come our way. When we know, experientially by God’s interaction with us our incredible worth to Him, then we are equipped to play a great game on the pitch of life and not just be spectators in the stands. God doesn’t want you religious, he wants you free and a life changer, winning in life despite how tough the game can sometimes get.

Council U-turn on plans to remove cobbles from West Pier
A petition signed by thousands of people has led to a U-turn by Plymouth City Council over plans to remove cobbles from part of West Pier.
The planned programme of work on the historic pier - which is home to the Mayflower Steps - originally allowed for the cobbles to be replaced by flat-cut natural stone. However, after a public outcry Council Leader Tudor Evans issued a statement confirming that the cobbles will stay. He said: “The council has to repair West Pier so it does not collapse into the sea and to do that vital work we need to lift the cobbles. “The plan was to re-lay the cobbles nearby on the Barbican, but over the last few days it has been made abundantly clear to me that people want to see the cobbles put straight back on West Pier once repairs have been made. I have listened to what has been said and I have made it clear to the project team that the cobbles must remain on West Pier - and they will.” Apart from repairing the surface of the peir, the plans include: • New coordinated street furniture and lighting – natural stone seating and lighting columns will run along the pier’s north side and will include street furniture needed for events, such as power supply points, waste bins, bollards and a drinking fountain • A new cantilevered balcony at the east end of the pier for people to get a cracking view of the Sound and Mountbatten • A new scheme of interpretation highlighting the story of Plymouth as a key point of departure for the Mayflower and over the centuries.

Queen’s Honour for Ian
Plymouth’s Ian Sherriff, a leading figure in dementia care and research, has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
Ian, who is Academic Partnership lead for dementia at the University of Plymouth and Ambassador for Alzheimer’s Society, received the award for services to people affected by dementia. His commitment to campaigning for people who might not otherwise have a voice has been recognised around the world, most recently in Japan where he was invited as a keynote speaker to the Osaka National Dementia Conference. The Japanese delegation said he ‘lit the heart of Japan for dementia’ – and his impact has resonated in local, regional and national communities. Locally, Ian’s work has helped Plymouth to become the first dementia friendly community in the UK. He was integral in setting up the Plymouth Dementia Action Alliance (PDAA), of which he is currently Chair, enabling a citywide approach to dementia awareness. He delivers dementia awareness sessions to healthcare professionals and students, and at organisations including the BBC, Plymouth City chat and toys. £1 donation to the NCT Charity. Fiona’s colourful collaboration
Stagecoach South West, the Presenting Partner for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth, has announced a unique collaboration with author and illustrator Fiona Lumbers to create one of the special Elmer trail sculptures. Set to be the biggest family friendly public art event in the region this summer, the sculpture trail, which takes place across Plymouth and surrounding areas, is inspired by the much-loved children’s character of Elmer the Elephant, created by Devon born artist and author David McKee. The colourful parade of 40 unique elephants is tipped to attract 250,000 visitors, raising vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth who provide care and support for people with a life-limiting illness and their families across Plymouth, South West Devon and South East Cornwall. The Stagecoach Elmer is being designed by Fiona Lumbers, a popular children’s illustrator

and the author of children’s book ‘Clem and Crab’, published by Anderson Press. Fiona said: “I’m so excited to be involved with Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth and to be supporting the work of St. Luke’s. It’s a real honour to be collaborating with Stagecoach South West on this project. My Elmer will feature the characters from my book ‘Clem and Crab’. “The story explores themes of conservation and keeping our beaches clean – how lots of small actions added together can make a big difference.” Fiona is in the process of creating her design at Elmer’s Big Parade ‘Herd HQ’ in Plymouth, the former Toys R’ Us store, and met with Stagecoach South West commercial director Karen Hodder to catch a glimpse of the design in its preliminary stages. Stagecoach South West managing director, Bob Dennison said: “We are delighted to be
Presenting Partner for Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth and Fiona’s design really appealed to us with the sustainability messages and struck a chord given the nature of our business, it’s great to now see Fiona’s design coming to life. “We cannot wait to see the completed design and are looking forward to working with St Luke’s over the coming months to help raise awareness of Elmer’s Big Parade Plymouth, as well as the incredible work undertaken by the charity” The project will conclude with a Grand Charity Auction on October 9, where the colourful and unique elephant sculptures will be sold, enabling St Luke’s to continue providing its outstanding compassionate care for the 3500 plus patients and families that the charity cares for annually either at home, in hospital or at its specialist unit at Turnchapel. The restoration and reinterpretation of Plymouth’s historic Elizabethan House has moved into an exciting phase with building work beginning in earnest. Led by Plymouth City Council, with additional funding support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic England, the Coastal Revival Fund and The Pilgrim’s Trust, it’s one of the key legacy projects for the city’s Mayflower 400 commemorations. The first physical sign of the work will be the creation of a temporary site compound in the seating area at the end of New Street. The compound will feature a small hoardings scheme which will display information about the history of the house. Once building work is complete and the hoardings are down the seating will be reinstated and refreshed. Scaffolding will be installed to the front of the building in July. Repair work to the external structure and oak timbers will then be carried out from August. Inside the house, a programme of works to

clean, strengthen the floors and undertake an assessment for the foundations of a new extension will be carried out over the summer. Once these are complete further structural and repair work will continue throughout the autumn/winter and into next spring. Construction work for the extension will also take place. A small, two-storey addition to the original building, it will house storage space, a staff kitchen and toilets. Councillor Peter Smith, Deputy Leader said: “Following all the investigative works that have taken place at the house it’s great to be moving forward with the next phase of our
ambitious plans for the Elizabethan House. “The property has stood largely unaltered for more than four centuries and is a real gem that we’re working hard to preserve for future generations. “As well as being a witness to some significant periods in Plymouth’s history it has a fascinating history of its own. We’ll be bringing this to life through new interpretation once the building work has finished.” Stay up-to-date with news and updates about the Elizabethan House at www. theboxplymouth.com/elizabethan-houserestoration

Derriford leading the way with treatment of rare type of cancer

Survival rates for patients being treated for a rare type of cancer at Derriford Hospital are greater than anywhere else in the country, thanks to a specialist team providing early access to drugs and emerging treatments through clinical trials.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a cancer of white blood cells, which help the body to fight infection. It is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which develops in the lymph glands. Each year around 500 people are diagnosed with MCL in the UK, and University Hospitals Plymouth runs the only specialist clinic in Europe. “Because we have developed this dedicated service, adopting innovative treatments and running clinical trials, we receive referrals from all over the country, with patients even travelling from overseas in order to see us,” said Professor Simon Rule, consultant haematologist at University Hospitals Plymouth and Professor of Haematology at the University of Plymouth. “We have been the first in the world to treat patients with new drugs on a number of occasions, years before they become available elsewhere, so our patients greatly benefit from this.” In a paper recently published by the British Journal of Haematology, the outcomes for patients treated for MCL at University Hospitals Plymouth are compared with an equivalent UK population in a comparative area. Plymouth patients are shown to be living, on average, twice as long as the general population. This is likely to be a result of their involvement in clinical trials, for roughly 60% of patients receiving treatment at Derriford

Hospital are enrolled on to at least one clinical trial, compared to only 9% elsewhere in the country. Dr Rory McCulloch, lead author of the study, said: “Advances in cancer therapies over the past ten years have been remarkable, and by running so many clinical trials in Plymouth, our patients have access to emerging drugs and treatments before they become available on the NHS. We’re delighted to see the benefit our patients are receiving.” Margaret Sandey, from Plymouth, was diagnosed with MCL in 2008 and puts her current ‘lovely quality of life’ down to taking part in a clinical trial at Derriford Hospital. “When I was first diagnosed, I was told that the life expectancy was only possibly two to three years. I started taking ibrutinib and now everything is fine. Eleven years later and I’ve been clear for seven years. There were no side effects from taking the drug and no chemotherapy was needed. I’m so very fortunate - it just means everything. “My experience of the care at Derriford has simply been amazing. I can’t fault it, nor thank everybody enough. The team are fantastic, just like members of the family, and thanks to them I’m still able to go on
holiday and live life to the full.” Another MCL patient, Jonathan White, from Salcombe, added: “I’ve always felt in incredibly safe hands, knowing that I’m getting the very best care I can get. “Having any type of cancer is scary, but it’s such a comfort to know I’m seeing a team who are probably the best in the world at what they do. If you have MCL, this is definitely the place to be. We are so lucky that Simon and his team decided to set up the clinic here in Devon! I now lead a completely normal life, and I’m feeling pretty positive about the future.” Dr Gary Minto, director of research, development and innovation at University Hospitals Plymouth, said: “The outcomes of the MCL clinic are a credit to the whole haematology service and testify to excellent clinical care. “We know that patient survival rates here are right up with the best in the world for this disease, and that’s because research provides access to new drugs and treatments, often years before they are available on the NHS.” For more information about the MCL specialist clinic, please visit www. mantlecelllymphoma.co.uk
