Be part of the Mayflower 400 celebrations! In just a few weeks time, the Mayflower 400 celebrations will be officially launched with Illuminate, the spectacular light festival at Royal William Yard. You will find details about Illuminate in the What’s On section of this edition - it promises to be a massive event which will attract tens of thousands of people from Plymouth and beyond. In readiness for the year-long celebrations, hundreds of volunteer ‘Mayflower Makers’ are being recruited, trained and sent into action across Plymouth as the city prepares to mark the 400th anniversary of the ship’s sailing. Organisers hope to build a team of 400 volunteers to support the Mayflower 400 commemorations next year – with 180 already signed up and ready to go. Their job will be to spread the word about the exciting 2020 events programme, help administer the events and welcome the thousands of visitors who are expected to arrive in Plymouth. They have been named ‘Mayflower Makers’ and have already helping out at events such as the British Fireworks Championships in August. One of the visitors to the Mayflower 400 stand at the summer’s fireworks was a direct descendant of a Mayflower passenger. It’s a great opportunity to help promote this fantastic city of ours and be part of a once in a lifetime event. If you are interested in getting involved and taking part in one of the Mayflower Makers introduction sessions go to www. ourplymouth.co.uk. You can also find out more about the Mayflower 400 celebrations here in Plymouth and other towns and cities at www. mayflower400uk.org Hope you enjoy the latest edition!

WOMEN AT WORK

Love is all you need - ac The Beatles and Cindy W All you need is love - according to the lyrics of the track made famous by The Beatles. And it’s a philosophy that has been at the heart of everything that Cindy Willcocks does. Best-known as the founder three years ago of Arterne: Enriching the Next Generation CIC, Cindy spends every ounce of her unbounding energy and enthusiasm spreading love by working to raise awareness of mental health, supporting people of all ages and backgrounds, businesses and communities. Over the years Cindy and her team have helped literally hundreds of individuals deal with mental health challenges, self-harming, relationship issues, domestic abuse and trauma. Behind all the work is the key message: ‘before you can love another, you must first learn to love yourself.’ Promoting the message of ‘no health without mental health’ Arterne was created by Cindy to tackle the stigma of the term mental health, promoting the message that ‘we all have mental health.’ Alongside her work as founder and director of Arterne, Cindy is the driving force behind a number of associated projects including Platform 50, the LOVE Leadership Academy, Sea-ing Changes, Operation Snow and Elevate.

A registered mental health nurse herself, last year Cindy also launched Arterne 2 Nurse, a special agency providing qualified mental health workers in a range of settings. Platform 50 is supported by a group of volunteers from all walks of life who mentor and help young women between the ages of 16 and 25, helping them to deal with life issues and achieve their true potential. The LOVE Leadership is captured in her soon-to-bereleased book called ‘Draw a Heart Around It’ and provides a revolutionary mental health treatment for individuals and companies. SEA-ing Changes is offered by Arterne in collaboration with Beach Schools South West and involves group based activities supporting families who want to maintain positive mental health within the family unit. Operation Snow is an annual event now in its fourth year when dozens of people who are homeless, lonely or just

ccording to Willcocks! down on their luck come together on Christmas Day to share the festive spirit - thanks to Cindy and a band of enthusiastic volunteers and organisations. Elevate is also an annual event and this year takes place on October 3 at the Boringdon Park Golf Club. It showcases the achievement of local women who have developed great strength and improved confidence through dance. The event, which features a number of professional performances, is an important fund-raiser for the work of Arterne CIC. And in her latest development, Cindy has launched The Op Shop - where customers can choose from a vast range of pre-owned items and pay what they think it is worth. The Op Shop, located in Buckwell Street near the city centre, opened in the summer and offers a range of designer

labels, household items, art works - and even bicycles. “Raising funds for the work of Arterne CIC and our other projects is a constant challenge,” said Cindy. “We’re hoping that The Op Shop will provide much needed funds.” At the moment Cindy spends as much time in the shop as she can - in between her mental health clinical work and other vital projects under the Arterne umbrella. She is now looking to recruit a hard-working individual to run the shop, recruit helpers and fully develop its potential. “I’ve been overwhelmed by all the goods which have been donated for The Op Shop - it will really help us to spread the message of love and self-belief through Arterne and our other projects,” said Cindy. “We really need to make more people aware about what we do at Arterne and how we can help people to deal with the issues of life

“It has become the room that we use more than anywhere else in the house.”

There’s customer service, and then there’s KF Kitchens’ customer service. Just ask their latest happy customers, Chris and Margaret Thorpe, from Elburton. Their new kitchen takes the term ‘customer service’ to a whole new level. The couple wanted a ‘false’ chimney breast to be built to accommodate their existing range, they got it; they asked for tiny cupboards to be inset in the chimney breast as a handy condiment store while cooking, not a problem; they particularly liked the idea of in-frame cupboards and drawers for added character, they got them; they even asked for a bookcase in the same style - and they got that too. And when they mentioned that some of the sizes were likely to be unusual and a bit tricky, guess what? That wasn’t an issue, either. “KF Kitchens gave us precisely the kitchen that we wanted.” said retired Royal Navy engineer Chris. “Some of the units had to be specially made because of the sizing. We wouldn’t have had that if we’d used a national company. They worked with us all the way. And because they’re based just down the road, we could nip in and see them at any time. From start to finish, their customer service was amazing.” Not that it came as a surprise - Chris and Margaret chose KF Kitchens following

recommendations from a number of friends: “We spent a lot of time looking at other companies online, but we always knew we’d be visiting KF Kitchens as well, because of what our friends had told us. And they weren’t wrong!” KF Kitchens is an established family-owned company, run by Nathan and Derinda Damarell and Simon Rice. When Chris and Margaret first popped in to see them at their showroom at Faraday Mill, they already had a rough idea of the design, units, appliances and colours they wanted for their kitchen and utility room. “We had a number of design meetings with Nathan and he drew up a rough costing at the outset, so we knew the ballpark figure we were working with,” said Chris. “There was never any pressure. They were very friendly, and they were willing and able to go the extra mile to meet our requirements. “Nathan advised us not to choose the colours until we’d decided the design of the kitchen. That was good advice. At that stage, we could look at the 3D images which gave us a good idea of how the kitchen would look.” The Thorpes chose a shaker-style inframe Burbidge kitchen in mink and putty, with a mix of cupboards and drawers which provide plenty of easy-access storage. The kitchen is completed by stylish Silestone worktops, Blanco sink and Quooker boiling water tap. The fit also included new Neff appliances - microwave, dishwasher, and extractor hood. “The kitchen we had before was nice, but it was about 20 years old and we felt it was looking a bit tired,” said Chris. “It was a cottage-style kitchen and we wanted something more modern. The new units in the utility means we have a lot more storage space, and the kitchen now lads nicely out to our conservatory extension, which was another of our aims.

“The one thing we really wanted to do was to make our range a central feature and we thought that a chimney breast would do that. But we didn’t have a chimney breast! They built one for us - it’s a perfect fit and sets a great feature for the room.” The work took three weeks - and, just like the planning, it went like clockwork: “The fitter was meticulous with the installation, I can’t praise him highly enough,” said Margaret. “He made sure everything was just right. He was always making suggestions, advising us on how we could achieve the best look, and he kept us informed so we knew exactly what was going on. “We couldn’t be happier with the end result.” The entire project was managed by KF Kitchens, including the kitchen fitting, plumbing, plastering, electrics and decorating. So, will Chris and Margaret be recommending them to their friends? “We already have,” said Chris. “We found KF Kitchens through recommendations from friends and now, we’re passing our recommendation on to other friends. It’s obvious that they really care, they want you to get the kitchen you want.”

FOOD MATTERS

Janet Stirling’s...

Sunshine Kitchen This month I have chosen to share my recipe for roasted peaches with Amaretto. September is the month that the hedgerow fruits come into their own. Plus the beginning of the autumn fruits but since I like to stretch the summer out as long as I can I am using peaches in this recipe. You can still get them in the shops in September but if not, you can do exactly the same recipe with plums, which has a deeper more autumn feel to it and also delicious! If you’ve ever been to California in the summer and eaten a Californian peach, which can be the size of both my fists together and sweet as honey dripping down your chin, you’ve tasted a bit of heaven. Since the peaches are not quite the same when they’ve been picked green and transported to England from far off lands, we have to rethink the situation. I’m not going to be deprived of their glory so, I roast them in the oven and it magnifies their flavour. I am constantly impressed at how an oven works its magic on unripe fruit.

There is something with the peaches in our shops that is annoying and that is that the stones do not come out easily. I have squashed peaches to a pulp trying to get the two halves to separate. When that happens I cut wedges from the peaches with a knife and they taste just as good but don’t have the same visual impact as two peach halves in your dessert bowl. I just arrange them like a fan and they look fine. Alternatively you can cut the stone out but watch your fingers! I last made this dessert for friends who came to supper and, the woman in the couple does not drink alcohol, consequently the only time she gets to taste it is in cooked foods. So, this was a real treat for her as I use Amaretto, an almond liqueur, with my peaches because I love the almond flavour and it pairs with peaches beautifully. We all sat in silence eating this dessert. Need I say more? It’s my kind of dessert as it is easy and delicious. You only need to combine the ingredients and bake! Love it...but there is an even easier way of cooking these luscious peaches and that’s on the BBQ! September can be our best month for BBQ’s. “Weather permitting” I hear you cry. Well not in our house. My husband goes out with an umbrella and cooks onehanded and loves it. It’s the British bulldog in him! Here are the ingredients you will need: √√ Peaches, 1 per person √√ Brown sugar, 1 teaspoon per peach √√ Vanilla √√ Almonds toasted, chopped or flaked √√ Amaretto Liqueur, 1 tablespoon or so per peach √√ Vanilla Ice Cream and/or cream to serve Oven method √√ Preheat oven to 180C fan, 200C conventional oven √√ Cut peaches in half and remove stone √√ Put peaches in an ovenproof dish, cut side up √√ Add a drop of vanilla into each peach half √√ Sprinkle over brown sugar or honey

FOOD MATTERS

√√ A small knob of butter can be added to each peach half (omit if you are dairy intolerant) √√ Bake 10-15 minutes (they should be half way at this stage) √√ Remove from the oven after 10 minutes √√ Drizzle over Amaretto and bake for another 10 minutes or so until the topping is light brown. √√ Spoon over any cooking juices to serve and sprinkle with the toasted almonds. √√ My choice would be to serve them with vanilla ice cream or double cream or both!!! Other alternatives are crumbled Biscotti biscuits instead of the nuts, for the crunch element of the dish and Brandy instead of the Amaretto is a really grown up change. Yummy! BBQ method After removing the stone, wrap each peach half in thick aluminium foil or double the one you have but before closing the top sprinkle in the spoonful of sugar and a splosh of Amaretto Liqueur and a dash of vanilla flavouring. Close the foil like a bag and place on the BBQ. If there’s not enough heat left put the peach parcel straight onto the coals and leave while you eat your main. To be perfectly honest, these peaches are even delicious if you have no booze in the house to put on them. The vanilla is enough flavour as it mingles with the melted brown sugar and butter. A little pinch of cinnamon would bring an extra dimension too. Bon appetite! When I think of peaches, I can’t help but smile remembering Dolly Parton saying, “I love bald men. Just because you’ve lost your fuzz don’t mean you ain’t a peach.” Drop me a line and let me know how you try this recipe. I’d love to hear from you: email me at info@cornerstonevision.com

Plymouth Theatre Company present the musical comedy Avenue Q at the Devonport Playhouse in November. Remember Sesame Street on children’s TV? Well the puppets have grown up and find the world isn’t quite how they imagined. This is a very grown up show with very grown up problems (the puppets are still there with the humans). This is definitely not a show for the kids. The award-winning hit show received plenty of prizes and Tony Awards when it opened in New York. Music? There’s plenty of that too. Songs like ‘The Money Song’ and, of course, ‘The Avenue Q Theme’. The show was among the longest running on Broadway. Jasmine Sharma is head chef and owner of the contemporary Indian restaurant, Daaku, in Penryn. She lived with pain and discomfort in her feet from childhood, with no relief until a desperate search online led her to Foot Solutions’ Royal Parade shop. The results made the 90 mile round trip more than worth it.

discuss the results with me and explain everything, they were so attentive.”

“I found the pain in my feet increasing when we opened the restaurant a year ago,” said Jasmine. “I had problems most of my life, partly because I have wide feet and I just accepted that I could not get shoes that fit me properly.”

Jasmine waited 10 weeks to go back and collect her custom inserts due to her own busy work schedule and she wasnʼt sure she needed them. “ʼIʼm already so much better, what can they do for me?ʼ I said. Well, I was amazed – for the first time in my life I felt as though my feet were properly on the floor! My pain and discomfort are gone, my shoes are so comfortable and I can even wear other shoes for a short period and not have ill effects - I can wear my party shoes when I want to.”

Jasmine tolerated a level of discomfort for many years but in running the restaurant and kitchen she spent 10 to 12 hours a day on her feet; the pain intensified to such a degree that Jasmine would wake in the night because of it. “The pain got worse and began to spread into areas where people normally develop bunions and I thought ʻI canʼt have bunions, my feet are already too wide for most shoes!ʼ I did not know what would help me, so I looked online and found Foot Solutions.” Jasmine was seen by one of the Pedorthists who are trained to carry out a free foot health assessment. “It was incredible,” said Jasmine, “using their advanced technology they produced a pressure map which showed red exactly where I was experiencing most pain. “I was more impressed with the people in the shop than even the hi tech equipment they have. They took time to

A set of custom inserts was ordered for Jasmine, and she took home new shoes and over the counter inserts. She was impressed from the start: “After two days, the pain was gone! I could work during the day, and I was sleeping at night without pain waking me up.”

Working in a hot kitchen is difficult at the best of times but now Jasmine has more energy to handle the pressures, she is less tired, her feet are comfortable and as she says: “It has been life-changing. I would absolutely recommend Foot Solutions to anybody. In fact I do, even to strangers on trains if we get talking about our feet!” For a free appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the city centre.

Cyclists of all ages are getting set for one of Devon’s boldest and most popular charity challenges this autumn, the Tour de Moor in aid of well-loved charity St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. The annual event – now in its tenth year – takes place on Sunday October 13, raising funds to help St Luke’s continue its specialist end of life care for terminally ill people, helping them to live well to the end. Sponsored by Print Copy Scan, a local supplier of printers and copiers, the challenge in the rugged wilds of Dartmoor offers cyclists the opportunity of an adrenalin-packed adventure: the hill-filled 52km mixed terrain route of mud, sweat and gears. Cycling at its fiercest for those aged 12 and above! Alternatively, participants aged nine and above can take it down a gear and saddle up for 23km of tough riding over hills and through woods, and there’s also the ‘mini moor’, a gentle 11km ride along the tarmac paths of Drake’s Trail that’s suitable for all the family. As well as Tour de Moor providing for every level of cycling ability, the money it raises means the highly skilled St Luke’s team can give not just expert medical care but also emotional, practical and spiritual support to families at the most vulnerable of times, whether their loved one is being cared for

ster the moors big difference! at home, in hospital or at its specialist unit at Turnchapel. Head of fundraising at St Luke’s, Penny Hannah, said: “Tour de Moor is always a terrific day. It’s fitness and muddy fun, and with three routes to choose from, it’s ideal for both families as well as more experienced cyclists who really want to push themselves. “Taking on the challenge is a great opportunity to get on your bike and help us provide vital care and support to patients and their families across the local area, making every hill climb worth that extra effort!” Director of Print Copy Scan, Karl Welburn, said, “The calibre of the care St Luke’s provides is second to none, but we mustn’t take it for granted because none of us know when we might need it. As the only specialist end of life care provider in this area, the charity needs continued support and that’s why we’re proud to sponsor Tour de Moor again this year. All the money raised by people participating goes directly to patient care.” The Tour de Moor challenge departs from 8.30am at Harrowbeer Airfield, near Yelverton, and finishes there.

Why elephants and Plymouth Zoo are at the heart of new exhibition For 16 years, half a century ago, Plymouth had a zoo. As well as a visitor attraction, it served as a quarantine centre for animals entering the UK by sea. Now, it’s the starting point for ceramic artist Matthew Raw’s exploration of the city’s history and his wider meditation on the relationship between people and place, played Ceramic artist out in a series of ceramic artworks. Matthew Raw Tactile Change is Matthew’s working hard at second solo exhibition, and runs the Plymouth from September 20 to November 16 College of Art. at Plymouth College of Art. Building Photo: Sarah Packer on his previous work, it uses ceramic tiles and sculptural works in clay to examine the evolution of the human landscape‚ in particular the notions of migration and progress, as represented by the history of the zoo. Although Tactile Change is a solo show, it is also a team effort – the result of a deliberate programme of collaboration and social making on Matthew’s part. He has made the relationship between learning and making an integral part of his practice. In recent months, he has been working with children from Plymouth School of Creative Arts (PSCA) to prepare for the Tactile Change project. Matthew’s involvement with PSCA stems from a mural project he is currently undertaking in collaboration with architects Feilden Clegg Bradley at the University of Warwick.

30\

The Plymouth Magazine October 2019

Matthew learned that the firm also worked with Plymouth College of Art on the design for Plymouth School of Creative Arts, and that the school placed making at the heart of its curriculum. He decided that the students would make ideal partners for the Tactile Change project. Opened in 1962 and closed just 16 years later, Plymouth Zoo served as a quarantine centre for animals arriving in the UK from overseas. Matthew used the story of an elephant temporarily held at the zoo as a starting point for PSCA children to consider ideas of migration, transience, containment and the experience of quarantine. A number of the designs the students produced during this period have become motifs for a series of ceramic tiles to be installed as pieces of public art in the zoo’s former home in Central Park, at PSCA and as part of Tactile Change.

BUSINESS MATTERS

One of Plymouth’s best-known independent family-owned businesses celebrates its 27th birthday next month.

Sunrise Windows in Plympton was launched by owner Ross Dent in November 1992 - a dream come true for Ross, who’d always wanted to run his own business, ever since entering the industry as a 17-year-old. The company has always been based in Market Road, Plympton - just up the road from St Mary’s Church. The building was formerly a malthouse, storing barley and fermenting beer. The spur for setting up Sunrise Windows came when the national glazing firm Ross worked for closed all its branches and made everyone redundant: “The industry was hit by the recession but being made redundant was what kick-started Sunrise Windows,” he said. “It was always my ambition to have my own company, and that gave me the push to do it. “I brought two of my colleagues with me - and they’re still here today, nearly 30 years later!” Double glazing was pretty new when Ross first entered the industry. Then, it was a luxury item and quite basic compared to today’s standards: “In the early days, when I started out, people often had to take out a second mortgage to pay for it because it took up such a high percentage of their income,” said Ross. Thankfully, replacement windows are far more affordable today, and technological advances mean they are more efficient than ever. There are more choices, too. When it comes to materials, Sunrise Windows offers PVC, aluminium and timber frames. Styles range from traditional, such as cottage and sash, to contemporary tilt and turn windows that bring in the light but keep out the cold. One of the newest products on the market is the flush sash window, a hybrid that retains the look but sits flush within the frames. These are ideal for heritage properties - one of Sunrise Windows’ specialities. The same choice of materials is available for doors, together with composite type doors. Designs include new

wave, bi-fold, French doors and patio doors, as well as standard single doors. Over the past 27 years, Sunrise Windows has built a reputation for quality, expertise and friendly service for both domestic and commercial customers. It’s why councils, local schools and contractors as well as homeowners turn to them to install their new windows and doors. It’s also why they’re so busy. The firm has a number of highly experienced fitting teams and on the day the Plymouth Magazine visited, they were all out on installations: “This time

of the year is especially busy, with people looking to replace failing windows and doors in time for the worst that winter can throw at us,” said Ross. “Ideally, if your windows are letting in the cold and the noise from outside, you really should be starting the process of replacing them now because of the wait time between ordering, manufacturing and installation. My advice would be ‘don’t get caught cold by delaying too long’.” The ethos of always putting the customer first is another reason for the company’s long-term success: “We want to

BUSINESS MATTERS get it right, and that includes being personable with people, not putting them under pressure. We pride ourselves on our product knowledge and the quality of our work. And we get a lot of repeat business and recommendations as a result.” But they don’t just do windows and doors. They also use their expertise to create stunning balustrades for staircases and for outdoor areas, where glass provides a maximum viewing experience. All Sunrise Windows products are made to British standards, boast the most thermally efficient technology and are fitted by craftsmen. The work is covered by a company warranty and an insurance-backed warranty. For added peace of mind, the company is a member of the Buy With Confidence Scheme run by Plymouth City Council’s Trading Standards Department, and is endorsed by Which? Trusted Traders. It is also registered with Fensa, and the Glass and Glazing Federation, whose Code of Conduct has stringent regulations on work standards and company financial stability. Finance packages are available, so the cost can be spread - Sunrise Windows are authorised as a credit broker by the Financial Conduct Authority. As well as running the company, Ross is also a prominent member of the wider business community. He is a former vice chair of the Plymouth Federation of Small Businesses and is the current chair of the South West Glass and Glazing Federation. So, after all these years in the business, is he still enjoying it? “Absolutely. It’s a people business and no two days are the same. Plus, there’s no time to get bored!” Ring 01752 339373 to book a home appointment and a free, no-obligation estimate for your requirements. And visit the Sunrise Windows website to view photo galleries, customer testimonials and the full range of services.

GARDENING MATTERS By Derek Anderson and Rebecca Rose of Plymouth Garden Centre Now is the perfect time of year to start planting fruit trees and fruit bushes. The damper soil makes digging a nice big planting hole much easier, and allows more water to be available within the soil for the new roots. The cooler temperatures inhibit the rapid growth of unwanted fungus, bugs and insects and the roots will get a chance to grow and really dig down deep into the soil, before they start growing their branches and fruits in the Spring! Some things are easier than others to grow, however, if you want to step out of your comfort zone and try something that will take a little more work, our expert plant team are always available for guidance. And don’t forget we also have our online ‘Plant Doctor’ Facebook group, linked to the @ plymouthgardencentre Facebook page, where you can access the extensive knowledge of our expert plant team directly from your garden! (Our plant team always manage to respond very quickly, even when the garden centre is closed - they really are passionate about gardening!). Although all fruit trees and bushes are fine to plant now, raspberry and blueberry bushes as well as the fruit trees will benefit greatly from being planted in the Autumn:

Guide to fruit plan

Raspberries Grow in a moisture retentive, acid (ericaceous) soil in full sun to part shade. There are two seasons for raspberries, Summer or Autumn Fruiting: Summer Fruiting Raspberries The canes grown this year will produce fruit next year, so there is no need to prune out this years growth, you only prune out the growth that has already fruited! But that does also mean you have to work out which canes are old and which are new. Autumn Fruiting Raspberries Unlike the summer fruiting, autumn fruiting raspberries fruit on new growth only. That makes them the best type of raspberry to grow if you are new to fruit growing as the pruning regime is incredibly easy – cut all growth back to the ground in early Spring. No trying to work out old and new canes. Alternatively, if space is limited and you want a long season of raspberries, grow Autumn fruiting raspberries as normal, and in between them, or in pots, plant the dwarf summer variety ‘Ruby Beauty’. This variety only grows to 1 metre tall, doesn’t take up a lot of space but provides a good crop.

Blueberries All blueberries will fruit substantially better if you plant at least two different varieties together, and they need to be grown in moist, acidic soil in sun or shade. They like to keep their feet wet and stay moist. Detesting drying out, planting at this time of year when the temperatures are cooling, the ground remains moist and the

o autumn nting... demand to keep them well watered lessens. There is much less chance of them drying out with our variable Autumnal weather, and as they start to drop their leaves, they can get their roots down into the soil to establish before they go dormant for Winter. Come Spring, they will be settled in and ready to grow away.

Fruit Trees Where space is tight or access to grow fruit trees in the ground isn’t possible, it is easy to grow fruit in large pots. We would recommend planting in something as large as a half oak barrel, using Joh Innes No. 3 and (here’s the part that scares everyone) selecting the tree with an appropriate rootstock. Don’t stop reading now, rootstocks are complicated, but that is why we are here. Most people find selecting rootstocks daunting, but it can be quite simple (especially when you have a garden centre who only stocks the ones suitable for an urban area!). We supply two sizes – dwarves and semi-dwarves. This means all our fruit trees are suitable for growing in small spaces and pots, but the semidwarves can also be grown as a garden tree, that you won’t need a crane to harvest! With the exception of the Bramley Apple, all our fruit trees are self-fertile, meaning they will pollinate, and produce fruit on their own. However, having two or more together will help produce a heavier crop. Some ornamental trees can be used for pollination, such as the Crab Apple Tree pictured here which can pollinate an ordinary eating apple tree, and

Plant of the month – Dianthus Also known as Carnations, Sweet William or Pinks, although these names often relate to different species of Dianthus. For example, Dianthus caryophyllus is usually known as Carnations used often by florists, and Dianthus barbatus is generally known as Sweet William. Interestingly, the name ‘Pinks’ is not because of the colour of the flower, rather the frilled edge which is thought to look like it has been cut with pinking shears. It is however thought the name of the colour pink is derived from Dianthus! Some species have an exotic, spicy fragrance. One of the oldest varieties, its origins dating back to medieval times is ‘Sops-In-Wine’, so called since the petals were used to flavour wine, giving it a smell of cloves very much akin to the mulled wine we have now. Tolerant of both heat and cold, these delicate little plants can produce blooms of colour all year round, a perfect substitute for Winter Violas or Pansies. So, whether you are a traditional or modern gardener, there is spot in every garden for Dianthus. They adapt exceptionally well to pots, and when in full bloom, can be brought inside for a living bouquet display. www.cornerstonevision.com

Beacon Electrical is one of the longest established and most well-known local retail businesses, serving the needs of their customers since 1976 from five family-owned and run electrical showrooms in Beacon Park, Pennycomequick, Plymstock, Kingsbridge and Totnes. They provide a wide range of everything electrical: cookers, ranges, fridges, dishwashers, washing machines and tumble driers and options of freestanding and built in products; lighting to suit all tastes; TV and audio equipment; heating and fires plus a range of DIY electrical items. “We have a lot of stock available, but even if we don’t have an item in our showrooms we can usually order it in within a couple of days,” said Mark Higgins, who with brother Nick now runs the business that their father, Chris, set up over 40 years ago. The business’ excellent reputation with two generations of Plymothians is founded on good oldfashioned customer service, together with constantly upgraded products for customers that keep pace with developments in technology. Price has always been a key factor in Beacon’s success, and new customers are often surprised to find out how competitive this family business can be. “We’re part of Europe’s biggest buying group with over 450 members. That’s more buying power than Curry’s,” said Mark. “We also have a price match promise so we compete with online retailers too, in fact they’re now our biggest competitors, it’s not the likes of Curry’s anymore.” Beacon have their own online shopping website featuring all of their products, which are available through the hugely popular ‘reserve and collect’ service. Their fleet of distinctively branded vans work six days a week delivering larger goods to their customers and that’s a part of the service that makes them even more competitive. “When we add up purchase price, extended warranties, delivery, installation and removal of old equipment we are nearly always far cheaper than the others,” said Mark. “For those ‘add-on’ items we can be half the price of online retailers like AO.” To make themselves easily accessible to their customers, Beacon offer multiple ways to be contacted: a visit to the showrooms, website ordering, online messaging through the website, click and collect and telephone orders. Older customers often prefer the face to face, in-store experience where they are treated to expertise and advice from trained people who know what they are talking about and have time to listen to what the customer needs. Often what they buy from us is an integral part of their daily lives and we want it to be just right for them. And of course we work just as hard to ensure the lowest prices we can – if a customer ever comes to us with a price difficulty we can usually work it out with them, especially when we uncover the ‘hidden extras’ they may not have noticed. TRAVEL MATTERS

Why travel brochures are st despite the internet and Tri Do we still need brochures? This is a question that has been the talking point in our industry over the past few weeks, after Tui decided to keep producing brochures, initially saying their production would cease. I started working in travel in the mid 80s (yes I know I look too young!), when travel agents worked from a black and green Viewdata terminal, and brochures were essential. There were three clear stages of a holiday booking: Dream, Research and Book. The Dream Stage: Your first idea of a holiday generally started with conversations with friends and family, or watching TV programmes such as ‘Wish You Were Here’ or ‘Holiday’, to give you ideas of destinations. Back then, the destinations were mostly affordable, and in Europe. I remember after different episodes of shows, clients coming in asking to go to ‘the particular part of Spain or Greece’ that had been featured. The Research Stage: Clients would then venture into our office to be given a selection of brochures, that we felt best suited their needs, to take home and peruse before making their final choices. The Booking Stage: Armed with their brochures, and a list of choices, the clients would come into our office to book their holiday of a lifetime. The start of what we think was the demise of the brochure was clients using ‘Teletext’ to search for late bookings and allocation on arrival holidays. It’s hard to believe that we used to book holidays where the traveller didn’t know where they were going to end up. Sometimes, this was based on star rating, hotel group, or even just the island or resort. If you were lucky you could end up with a holiday that was a lot cheaper than if you booked it knowing your destination. The problem is that expectation and realisation created a massive increase in customer complaints, causing tour operators problems both in resort and on their clients return. The internet is without question the biggest source of information for holidaymakers, and to be fair, to travel agents as well. Years ago, we needed ‘Travel Guides’ to check reviews on hotels and resorts if it was an area we hadn’t visited. TripAdvisor now makes life much easier. If the hotel is Tour operator Tui have decided to keep publishing brochures

particularly good, or bad, you can see almost instantly. There is always the valid argument that not all the reviews are real, but I would say generally, if you take the average of all the comments, you can see the true rating. So, with all this technology, and all this information available with a swipe of your finger or a click of the mouse, why do tour operators still insist on printing holiday brochures that can cost as much as £10 each to produce? Firstly, I think a key weakness of most travel websites remains that you need to know where you want to go before you can search. Brochures offer ‘flickability’, with customers able to scan prices and pictures for a whole range of destinations quickly and effectively, allowing them to shape the ‘dream stage’. Secondly, holidays are the most expensive annual purchase, but end with customers leaving our shop with nothing tangible except a promise to deliver a holiday months later. Brochures act as a psychological voucher that allows you to show friends and family what you’ve purchased. Finally, a brochure gives you a bond between the travel agent and the tour operator, so when booking a holiday, you have a loyalty to all parties involved. On-line you are only one click away from changing the company you are dealing with and no emotional bond is created, therefore the general experience not as engaging. There is no question that the number of brochures we receive from tour operators has decreased over the years. The larger tour operators have been cutting down their distribution and production cost to reallocate their money to their on-line promotion. For the smaller and more niche operators a brochure is their lifeline, an advert of their product for clients and travel agents to book their product, rather than a competitor. At Peter Goord Travel we still have a good supply of brochures. Being Independent we can deal with most ATOL and ABTA bonded operators. Thus, giving a much bigger choice of holiday for our client. We still do lots of package holidays with all the main operators, but I’m finding that I am giving brochures to

clients not just at the ‘dream stage’ but also the ‘booking stage’ where another operator has offered a better deal or an overall better holiday. We aim to offer the best holiday experience for the client, with the best tour operator suiting their specific needs. Therefore, being a sentimental person, I hope we have holiday brochures for many years to come. Eventually though, this will be decided by consumer demand and costs. It will be interesting to see who wins! Finally, this month I want to give a special mention to SAGA Holidays. Up until a few years ago travel agents were not able to sell SAGA holidays, but now it has become a firm favourite with our clients. When some mention SAGA it is thought of as attracting the more senior travellers. To be fair, that was the case years ago but not now. SAGA have a fantastic range of holidays from touring, to ocean cruising or river cruising, to single stay European holidays. They offer it all. In particular I love their touring brochure, which covers most of the world. Including most meals, and excursions, they offer great value for money. Alternatively, they have superb ‘All Inclusive’ ocean cruises, with new ships that are five-star cruising at its best, no inside cabins, and tips already paid. Another massive plus with most of their holidays is that they offer a free home pick-up service, and a holiday insurance that covers most pre-existing medical conditions. With reference to their insurance, I have had clients save hundreds of pounds in comparison to quotes they have had when shopping around. Especially those who need to do prescreening with their insurance. the money saved will make your overall holiday cost much cheaper. OK, so what age do you have to be to go on a SAGA holiday? Surprisingly, it’s only 50 and over, although a companion can be as young as 40. I’m proud to say that I can go on a SAGA holiday, and I’m sure when you book your next holiday with us, and it’s with SAGA, you’ll be happy to be middle aged. đ&#x;˜‰ Happy Holidays! www.cornerstonevision.com

HEALTH MATTERS

State-of-the art hearing clinic launches new service to the public A specialist audiology centre in Plymouth which has provided expertise to the NHS for 15 years is now offering its service direct to the public. Express Diagnostics has a pristine, state-of-the-art facility at Plymouth Science Park, where its team of highly trained, experienced audiologists carry out hearing tests in sound-proof booths and offer the latest hi-tech hearing aid solutions. The Care Quality Commission-registered centre also offers micro-suction cleaning, which has less risk of infection or perforation. The new private service is open for pre-booked appointments and has an emergency drop-in facility which also includes repairs to hearing aids. The centre launched the service in July, offering people the opportunity of an immediate appointment and the choice of the most technologically advanced hearing solutions available. In response to this growing need, the clinic has increased the number of audiology rooms to seven and hearing test booths to five. And it has taken on two additional audiologists, Clinton Jones and Vara Chetty - between them, they have 32 years of experience as audiologists. All the centre’s audiologists are qualified and registered with the national regulators, the Health and Care Professions Council. The quality of the audiologists, together with the top facilities, ensures the very highest clinical standards - a key reason why the NHS refers patients to the clinic. All the hearing tests are done in the sound-proof booths so that the results are accurate - a level of precision that’s not possible if the tests are done in a room where there is ambient sound. Having the correct results is critical because it’s what all the subsequent care and hearing aid equipment is based on. Express Diagnostics has seen how the use of the very latest technology is transforming the lives of people with hearing loss. There is evidence of a causal link between hearing loss and conditions such as depression, memory loss and dementia. Because the brain is the tool that we listen with, if we can’t hear, we’re not using that part of the brain. Hearing loss also causes people to be isolated and withdrawn, so it can affect their social and working lives. However, the hearing aids that are available at Express Diagnostics are so advanced, it’s just like having a computer in your ear! With Bluetooth connectivity, people can listen to Audiologist Clinton Jones with a patient in the hearing test booth

music or TV by streaming it directly into their ear, so the sound has more clarity than ever. Wearers can also chat on their mobile phone and the other person’s voice goes straight into their hearing aid, not through the phone. And they can even take part in conference calls at work in this way. All this is done with no diminishing of sound, and the wearer’s own voice sounds more natural, as well. The newest hearing devices use artificial intelligence which teaches the aid to learn familiar voices so it can focus on that and block out ambient sound. It also enables the aids to adjust automatically as the person moves in different environments. The high-tech hearing aids are very discreet - they have wireless charging and the aid’s settings can be changed by using a phone app. They are also made for an individual’s ear using bespoke fitting moulds and are so small, people can’t see them. Senior business development executive, Spencer Kingdom, said: “We’ve got the ability to make people’s lives easier and to offer them a solution that fits their lifestyle. People have said to us that it has changed their lives. One person, a lecturer, now feels better able to communicate with their students, so they are able to do their job better.” As part of the comprehensive hearing assessments, the audiologists can also flag up other issues such as inflammation, balance problems and wider ear, nose and throat related conditions. If necessary, they can refer the person to their GP. Spencer said: “We have Senior business development such a wealth of knowledge executive Spencer Kingdom and experience in the field of audiology, that it just makes sense to make that more widely available as a private service. “People love the idea that they can come here, park right outside and see someone straight away. We get a lot of comments about the stress-free ambience - it’s spacious, quiet and relaxed. And we have excellent accessible facilities. People also like to build a 1-2-1 relationship with their audiologist - they’ll always see the same specialist here.” Patients undertake an initial free hearing assessment with an audiologist in one of the testing booths before hearing aid options are discussed. Follow-up care and repairs are part of the service. Express Diagnostics has always been based in Plymouth and celebrated its 25th anniversary in August. It takes referrals from local GPs and hospitals in need of their expertise and offers a remote medical data analysis service

BUSINESS MATTERS Marc Soper...proud of the history of the family business

‘the boss’s son’. I had to earn the right to work there and I had to earn the respect of everyone else at the firm. But I was never put under any pressure to join the business. My father always encouraged me to do what I wanted. So even after I qualified as a plumber and gas engineer, I had other business involvements which is why, after I eventually joined the firm in the mid-1990s, I focused in particular

Soper Plumbing & Heating - 169-years-old and counting! The site now lying vacant to the left of the Island House on the Barbican didn’t always lie empty. In the middle of the 1800s, a large building stood there. At the front, there was a popular eatery, called Soper’s, while the upstairs was rented out as lodging rooms. But it was in the little workshop at the back where one of Plymouth’s oldest family firms was born. This was where the building’s owner, Henry Soper, busied himself with his plumbing and stonework business - some of the famous Barbican cobbles were laid by Henry. Little did he know then, that the plumbing business he started in that small back room was to thrive for another 169 years - and counting. Today, sitting behind his desk at the firm’s waterside HQ at Neptune Park in Cattedown, current incumbent Marc Soper compares and contrasts the work his ancestors did with the hi-tech work now being carried out by Soper Plumbing & Heating: “Plumbing back in 1850 didn’t involve very much at all,” says Marc. “It would have been drainage and mains water, and not a lot else.” Marc is the sixth-generation owner at the family firm, following in the footsteps of Henry, Anthony Soper, Alfred Soper, Russell James Soper and his father, Russell Charles Soper, who stepped up as boss in 1962. Marc took over the reins when his father died in 2015: “I used to work for him during the school holidays from the age of nine or 10,” recalls Marc, “it was cheap labour! I remember being at the site at Staddiscombe when the houses were being built up there. So my father got me into the business early!” Later, however, his father advised him to gain his qualifications and do his apprenticeship with another plumbing and heating company: “Dad didn’t want me to be

on the property side of the business, buying, renovating and selling houses.” These days, the focus of the firm’s work is installing stylish kitchens and bathrooms. They’re also busy doing complete building conversions and renovations, and they have a dedicated team that takes care of boiler installations and servicing. There are three other teams - for bathrooms, kitchens and building projects. With all trades under one roof, Soper Plumbing & Heating can deliver a project from start to finish, making the experience as smooth as possible for customers: “I’ll come and visit you and discuss designs and budgets. And after that, it’s all in-house, we’ll do absolutely everything. A new bathroom or kitchen should be an exciting experience, not stressful.” All the workers are DBS checked and have references: “We’re a really friendly bunch of people and I like to think that our customers have confidence in us and are happy to have our workers in their homes,” said Marc. Last year, he launched the Soper Home Care™ Cover Plan for homeowners and landlords. For £15 a month, the company will keep the boiler, plumbing and heating running efficiently all-year-round. The cover includes an annual boiler service and a 24hour responsive call-out: “We noticed a real need in the market for a completely transparent cover plan like this, where there are no hidden extras or costs and where you know you’re covered. “We’re not here to pull the wool over people’s eyes, we’re not here to make a quick buck, we’re here for the customer. We don’t treat our customers as a policy number! “The best advertising in the world is word of

mouth,” he added. “It’s all about customer care, that’s why we get so many recommendations. We have had literally hundreds of people - homeowners and landlords - sign up to the cover already. For landlords, it’s a weight off their minds for us to deal directly with tenants.” Marc has asked well-known Plymouth historian Chris Robinson to delve into the history of the company and his ancestors. He has unearthed a couple of photos from the mid-1800s where you can just see the name ‘Soper’ above the door of the business on the Barbican. (see photo) And Marc has learnt that after the Barbican, the business moved The Barbican in 1865 to Notte Street where Sopers were based under Alfred’s Photo: Chris Robinson ownership, where it stayed until his grandfather died and his father moved it to Plymstock in 1962. “We’ve got a lovely old photo of my grandfather with my father as a little boy and my Uncle Alan that was taken at Notte Street. “I’m very proud of our history. There can’t be many family firms that go back as far as Soper Plumbing. To have carried on and grown to how it is today is in large part due to our reputation for customer care. But it’s also down to constantly developing and keeping ahead of things.” Visit the website for details of all the services Soper Plumbing and Heating have to offer. www.soper.co.uk

Be fair with your fortune by Melanie Cotterill Family circumstances are increasingly more complicated. Second or third marriages are not uncommon, couples may have children from different relationships or there may be longstanding partners who choose not to ‘tie the knot’. If this sounds like your family situation, did you know that should you die without making a Will, your assets may not be inherited by those who you wanted to inherit them. The fallout you leave behind can often be catastrophic to those who mean the most to you.

Melanie Cotterill

Relying on the Law of Intestacy to dictate who will receive your estate is often not a good decision in modern complex family units. It can result in family breakdowns which are often never resolved. We are increasingly being contacted by clients who find themselves in distressing circumstances when:• A long-term partner has died without making a Will to protect their surviving partner’s right to remain in the home owned by the deceased • A person has died without a Will and their surviving partner is unable to afford to buy the deceased’s share of the property which will then pass to the deceased’s children under the Law of Intestacy • Children from a former relationship whose parent has died without making provision for them in their Will • Children whose parent has died leaving their whole estate to a new partner and trusting them to ‘do the right thing’ by their children, only for that partner to later renege on that promise • A person has failed to update their Will when their circumstances have changed, for example following separation, meaning a former partner may inherit their estate instead of the current long term partner or loved one.

Contentious Probate is a fast growing area of law which sees disgruntled children, partners and spouses making a claim against the estate of a loved one who they believe has failed to provide for them when they have died. This can be achieved by making a claim under the Inheritance (Provisions for Family and (Dependants) Act 1975, but it is an expensive and challenging option often resulting in substantial legal fees. Why not avoid the risk of leaving your loved ones with an expensive and upsetting legal battle should you die by protecting them with bespoke legal advice specifically moulded to your personal circumstances. This will ensure that those who mean the most to you are provided for. With 18 years experience in this field of Law, Melanie Cotterill at Roper James Solicitors has helped numerous people to just like you with her friendly, no fuss approach. Melanie’s experience means she has helped families out in most situations so discussing your circumstances with her and making a Will need not be daunting. Take advantage of a free initial consultation with Melanie at Roper James Solicitors to find out : • Who will inherit your estate if you do nothing, or rely on an outdated Will • Who would be able to make a claim against your estate • How you could protect your spouse or partner for life whilst still protecting assets for your children. Be fair with your fortune to ensure family harmony when you are gone.

WIN A 9KG HOTPOINT ACTIVECARE WASHING MACHINE (worth £400.00) Beacon Electrical is offering an amazing opportunity to win this “ActiveCare” 9Kg washing machine. Just answer the simple question below for your chance to win. The partnership of Beacon Electrical and Hotpoint has been going for most of the local Plymouth family business’s 43 year history, and has been a perfect match, helping to reinforce the principles of offering quality and reliable products at guaranteed lowest prices to customers in the Plymouth and surrounding areas. Hotpoint, of course, has been a household name for much longer, first appearing as a British brand in 1920, and is now one of the most recognisable brand names in the UK. Hotpoint have always continued to develop their products to make sure that customers get top quality technology and performance at a reasonable price. “The partnership with Hotpoint has always worked well for us. The products are excellent, and the customer service is second to none if anything does happen to go wrong within the guarantee period, which means our customers are always looked after.” Beacon Electrical is well known as a top local supplier of Kitchen Appliances, as well as other products like heating, light fittings and light bulbs, house wiring accessories, vacuum cleaners, and even TV and audio products, and their aim across the board is to offer honest, professional advise together with ultra competitive low prices. “We try to fit as much as possible on display in our shops and we can offer a huge range of appliances which we have in stock in two large local warehouses full of great deals, but the key message to our customers is that through our strong relationships with manufacturers, and our strong buying power through

the Euronics buying group, we can always make sure our prices compete, and very often BEAT national outlets and internet companies.”

“We have tried hard to make sure we meet the customers expectations to be able to buy in many different ways to suit their needs - through our website, www.beaconelectrical. co.uk, or “click and collect”, or over the phone, or in-store. Active Load uses only the necessary amount of water based on the weight of the laundry inside the washing machine, and constantly monitors the quantity of water absorbed by the load until the ideal level is reached. Every washing phase, from the beginning of the cycle until final rinse, is set automatically to ensure the minimum amount of time, energy and water used without compromising on performance. STOP&ADD Dropped an item on the way to the washing machine? With Hotpoint Stop&Add you can add laundry to the wash cycle without compromising on wash performance. STEAM PACK Steam Refresh A dedicated cycle to freshen clothes without the need for a full wash. Taking just 20 minutes, using less than two glasses of water, with steam penetrating deep into fabrics, making them slightly damp, reducing creases for easier ironing. Steam Hygiene Endorsed by Allergy UK, keeps your laundry fresh and perfectly clean. Steam is injected directly into the drum at the end of the washing cycle, removing up to 99.9% of the most common bacteria, perfect for bedding and towels.

This creates a mousse which penetrates the fibres of your clothes, eliminating the pre-treat process of the wash, still removing the toughest stains and giving you fantastic results.

FINAL CARE Keep your laundry soft, for up to 6 hours after the end of the cycle, helping to reduce creasing. This option will activate a special tumbling action for up to 6 hours after the end of the cycle.
