Cherish your children by Melanie Cotterill Nothing is more overwhelming than a parent’s love for their children.
Melanie Cotterill
Nurturing our children through their formative years, making memories and preparing them for adulthood is so rewarding.
We make decisions on their behalf on a daily basis which affect their education, health and wellbeing to hopefully result in a confident happy adult. Why then do we read in the media that 60% of adults in the UK have not made a Will? Failing to put your affairs in order potentially means uncertainty and certain heartbreak for your children if an unexpected event cuts your life short. Leaving things to chance risks Social Services having to pick up the pieces and manage your children’s needs until family members are given the authority to take over parental responsibilities. Appointing a guardian in a Will ensures that your children’s interests and development is protected in the event of your death. Making a Will allows you to detail bespoke provisions for your children such as :•
Who will be their guardians
•
Where will they live
•
Who will be the Trustees of your children’s interest in your estate until they reach the age you would want them to inherit
•
What age they will inherit
•
Staged payments at a particular age if you prefer
•
Trust provisions to ring fence their inheritance until such times that your Trustees believe that your children are mature enough to manage the funds themselves
Are you still in a relationship with the father or mother of your children? If you are estranged or divorced from that person, they will still legally be the person entitled to manage your child/children’s interest in your estate, if you die without making a Will, which may be the last thing you would want. Seeking advice to allow you to make an informed decision for your children in your Will need not be onerous. Take advantage of a free initial consultation to discover how easy it can be to make a Will to fit your children’s needs. Appointments available in your own home or at the office at a time to suit you.

City all set for a summer of fun Hubby and I managed to have a short break from work at the beginning of June and took the opportunity to visit this year’s Flavour Fest in the city centre. It’s a few years since we last found time to spend at this huge annual event - and we were amazed at the vast number of stalls and displays and the incredible range of food and drinks on display. It was easy to see why it has become the most popular event of its kind in the region, attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the city. In August we will all enjoy another of Plymouth’s blockbuster attractions - the ever-popular British Fireworks Championships on August 14 and 15. It’s an event which year-on-year puts Plymouth firmly on the national map with people travelling from far and wide to enjoy the spectacular pyrotechnics. Let’s hope for good weather for the two night display. And even before that mega-event Plymouth has so much more to offer this year. A wide-ranging programme of activities called Plymouth Summer of Fun will run from July 6 to September 7 at locations across the city. We have a special feature on the centre pages of this issue where you can read all about what’s planned and where. Also coming up is the popular Ocean City Blues N Jazz Festival over the weekend of August 9 to 11 when the Barbican and Waterfront will feature a great selection of music and other entertainment. A few days before that the yachts from the Rolex Fastnet Race will be finishing in Plymouth - with a special Race Village at Turnchapel Wharf hosting a range of fun activities and live music. The summer has already got off to a flying start in the city - and it’s going to get even better. Make sure you make the most of it! Hope you enjoy this edition.

CHARITY MATTERS
Those magnificent men...
...with their feet off the ground!
Photo: Derek Boyce As a young lad Peter White from Elburton always wanted to fly and he eventually achieved his dream as a teenager in 1964. Now, at the age of 71, Peter is the chairman of a charity which provides aviation experiences for mainly disabled and disadvantaged young people in the South West. Peter is chair of Feet Off the Ground (FOG), which is based at Bodmin Airfield and the team of FOG volunteers - including many pilots - have helped literally hundreds of youngsters to take to the air. Peter said: “I yearned to fly as a youngster and this entailed travelling, usually by bike, to airfields persuading pilots that I would be an ideal ballast for the flight they were about to take and this opened up many chances for me to fly in some very interesting types of aircraft.
An excited youngster about to enjoy his aviation experience

The Plymouth Magazine July 2019
“I first went solo in an aircraft in July 1964 and I have since enjoyed a wonderful time embroiled in aviation in one form or another and as a private pilot enjoyed the pleasures and freedom of flying and maintaining vintage aircraft. “The charity work I am involved with is an ideal way to ‘put something back’ and help others enjoy that joy of flight that is so special to me.” To date the charity has worked with Children’s Hospice South West, Bader Braves (Douglas Bader Foundation), CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids), Cornwall Accessible Activities Programme (CAAP) as well as dozens of schools, colleges, Scouts, Royal British Legion and Help 4 Heroes. The charity’s Fun Fly Days and Scout Aerocamps are operated by a volunteer team who generously give of their time and expertise to ensure that the young visitors leave with memories for a life time and a very large smile. Peter added: “We also have young visitors from schools and scouting organisations who are too young to fly with us but enjoy an aeronautical fun day at the airfield being taught about aviation and looked after by FOG volunteers. Also, as organiser of all the events at Bodmin Airfield, Peter introduced an extremely exhilarating addition to the programme three years ago...wing walking. “I got the idea when I saw TV presenter Phillip Schofield doing it and contacted the pilot Mike Dentith - an extremely experienced wing walking and display pilot - who flies a Boeing Stearman biplane with the participants seated on the top wing. Peter said: “It’s often a ‘bucket list’ item for people, but the majority of the participants are taking part to raise funds for their favourite charities. “The only requirement is to be over 16, fit enough to climb up on the wing, on the ground of course, and to weigh 77kgs or less.” The unique wing walking experience will be available at Bodmin Airfield on July 2,3,4,9, 10 and 11 this year The list of participating charities being supported

KF Kitchens serve up another fabulous family kitchen When Mark and Sarah Youde were considering a new kitchen for their home, they visited several local and national companies, and one firm stood out above the rest – Plymouth-based KF Kitchens. And, right from the initial consultation and design stage, all the way to the finishing touches being added, the couple are glad they chose the Faraday Mill firm: “The work was meticulous,” said Sarah. “They really care, it’s as though it’s their own kitchen. “And it’s more than a kitchen. It has become the room that we use more than anywhere else in the house.” KF Kitchens is an established family-owned company, run by Nathan and Derinda Damarell and Simon Rice. They were recommended to Mark and Sarah by a friend who recently had a kitchen installed by KF Kitchens: “We went and had a look and we really liked it,” said Mark. “But we did our due diligence by seeing what other companies had to offer, too. We knew what we wanted for our kitchen and it was clear that KF Kitchens were the best for us.” The couple moved into their house in Kelly Bray in 2013 and a new kitchen was always on their ‘to do’ list. Mark explained: “The house was built it 2006 and still had the original kitchen. It was dated, dark and badly designed. The hob was against the wall at the other end from the dining area, which meant that whoever was cooking had their backs to everyone and was miles away. “And there was a dividing area where the walls took up so much room that there was only space
for one person to be in the kitchen! So that had to go. We worked with Nathan on the design and he agreed with our ideas. It meant some structural work, knocking down that bit of wall to open the whole area up. It has created a space that flows from the kitchen, to the dining area and to the conservatory and utility. It has also brought a lot more light into the kitchen. “The other big change that Nathan suggested was moving the sink to the far end, where the hob used to be. We were going to keep it under the window, but by moving it, it has created one long worktop space – something we never had before.” When it came to choosing their kitchen, it was as though it was meant to be: “We saw the kitchen we wanted as soon as we walked into the showroom,” said Sarah. “It was right there in front of us. The only difference was the colour, because it was pink and we wanted purple, which we’ve got.” KF Kitchens managed the entire project, including the design, structural work, plastering, decorating, electrics, kitchen and worktop fitting, and flooring. The flooring also takes in the conservatory, to add to the ‘flow’, while new kitchen cupboards have added extra storage space in the utility. “All the work was coordinated really well,” said Sarah. “Every single worker was professional and did their work to the best of their ability. They wanted everything to be just right. When the fitters came to do the splash-backs at the end, they said they’d never seen anything so perfect – everything was completely level and straight!” But it’s not just about looks – it’s about practicality, too: “The storage space is intuitive, everything is where you’d expect it to be,” said Sarah. “The hob has been moved to the dining room end, so it’s like a servery area and it’s much more sociable. The workmen also set the low-level storage units further back under the servery, so there is more room as you move from the kitchen to dining area, and it can also be used as a breakfast bar. “And everything is dead easy to clean, which is important in a busy kitchen. It’s designed with use in mind - and it does get a lot of use.” The kitchen was a special treat for the family, following a health scare last year when Mark donated a kidney to Sarah when she suffered
kidney failure: “It made us look at things differently and we thought ‘we want a kitchen, so let’s do it’,” said Mark. “We’re so glad we did because we love it,” added Sarah. “We’ve now got a lovely social space that works well for us as a family with three youngsters aged 17, 16 and 12. And whoever’s cooking is now facing into the room, they’re not cut off!” Having had KF Kitchens recommended to them, Mark and Sarah are now passing the message on: “My sister is having a new bedroom fitted by them now,” said Sarah. “And after our experience, we would definitely recommend them to anyone thinking of having a new kitchen.” How KF Kitchens created Mark & Sarah’s fabulous new kitchen: • High gloss acrylic doors in cashmere on matching colour carcases • NEFF induction hob & extractor hood • NEFF slide and hide oven • NEFF compact combination microwave/oven • Neff concealed fridge-freezer • Neff concealed dishwasher • Silestone worktops, by Mayfl ower Stone • Blanco sink & Quooker boiling water tap • Karndean fl ooring

We Do Windows - celebrating a decade of great customer service Are you in danger of wasting thousands of pounds on new replacement window frames for your home? Plymouth family-run firm We Do Windows could save you a lot of money by replacing only the glass and not the frames, where the window and door frames are in good working order. The firm - members of both the Trading Standards ‘Buy With Confidence’ and ‘Which? Trusted Trader’ schemes - has served thousands of satisfied homeowners during its 10 years. Many of their happy customers have posted testimonials on the We Do Windows website and on their ‘Which? Trusted Trader’ profile, where they are recommended by 100% of their customers. In fact, much of their work comes from existing customers and recommendations. Recent testimonials include the comments: “Great value, great service, Seb installing a cat flap won’t hesitate to use again,” “fast, efficient, clean and tidy. The service is excellent and friendly from the first phone call and is very good value for money,” “I am so impressed with them. The company is very professional and efficient,” and “excellent service. Can’t fault anything. Recommendations already passed on to friends.”

The company is owned by Seb Treglown who works alongside his great friend of 20 years, Ross Northey. Mum and Dad also help out in the office. Much of the firm’s work involves replacing ‘steamed up’ (misted, foggy, etc) windows. They also offer an extensive range of double-glazing repairs and services such as replacement handles, hinges, seals and locks. Other growing areas include installing glass units with cat flaps and upgrading units with the latest energysaving glass. Seb says the key to their success is down to providing a good value service that can save customers money: “We have saved thousands of people a lot of money over the years, and that’s what we’re here for. Another major reason for our longevity is our reputation. We will always give our customers an honest appraisal with no hard selling and advise them on the best course of action to resolve their issues.” “We believe that if you look after your customers, they’ll look after you,” added Seb. “Occasionally the windows will be beyond repair. However, most of the time repairs can be done without the cost of removing and replacing the frames, so it’s worth giving us a call first. Many people still assume that if their double glazing
BUSINESS MATTERS is steamed up or if they have problem locks or draughty windows, they must need new frames as well. This is simply not the case.” Seb and Ross always recommend that customers opt for the latest energy-saving glass, where possible, which can lead to savings on heating bills and can significantly reduce internal condensation throughout the colder months. If the windows have failed, they can advise on the most efficient and costRoss at work on site effective upgrade to suit your needs. The firm has just undergone a rebranding exercise over the last year to coincide with its landmark anniversary, with new vans, clothing, logo and stationery. It’s also part of Seb’s plan to grow the brand by launching franchises: “We’re going from strength to strength so that we are now in a position where we can expand the business. Hopefully we will be able to offer franchises to like-minded people later this year.” It sounds as though the We Do Windows success story of the past 10 years is set to continue! For more information on the services they offer, visit the We Do Windows website. Or give Seb a call to arrange your free no-obligation quote.

Ryan's reader recipe Talented chef Ryan Marsland at The Fig Tree@36 restaurant in Stonehouse shares his latest recipe for one of their popular dishes. In this issue Ryan shares his recipe - and feelings - for risotto. Ryan said: “Risotto really is a chef’s best friend, it’s such a versatile ingredient and an essential of any kitchen, yet so many people I talk to seem scared of it! “Believe me there is no need to be, let me show you how the humble risotto can become your best friend too!”
Ryan’s Risotto Recipe You will need….. √√ A thick bottom sauce pan √√ A wooden spoon….impossible to make with a metal spoon, it just feels wrong!! √√ 100g risotto per person…we use arborio √√ Small white onion √√ A couple of sticks of celery √√ Small leek √√ Garlic √√ Fennel √√ Stock, about half a litre per portion, give or take √√ White wine, I like a dry one, doesn’t make that much difference, but this takes half an hour or so, so you want to be happy, right? √√ Butter √√ Parmesan √√ Some good music, opera would be fitting, but the Rolling Stones are easier on the ears! To start you need a good stock, depending on what your risotto is for, a chicken stock made with the left over roast chicken bones, a veg stock made with all your veg trimmings, don’t bin them, use them. Just chuck them in some water, a few herbs if you fancy, a squeeze of lemon, a little boil and strain it off… done. You could of course use a ready made stock, there are plenty around, but where is the fun in that? Ok, so you’ve got your stock, make sure it’s hot. Get your pan warm, add a splash of olive oil and let it get warm. Add in your garlic, onion, leek and celery. You’re going to

gently cook these over a medium heat, without colouring them. This is a pretty standard base for risotto, whatever your going to finish it with. If I were making a seafood risotto, I would add some fennel into the base. Allow the veg to cook until tender, then add your risotto, still cooking gently, let the rice and the veg get nice and friendly, as the rice starts to cook it will become translucent, give it a few stirs, then when the pan is nice and hot add your wine (if there is any left). The pan should sizzle when the wine hits, when it stops sizzling, stop adding and allow the wine to reduce down so it is all nice and sticky. When there is no liquid left, you can start adding your hot stock, a few ladles at a time. Between each addition your allowing all the liquid to reduce down each time, always on a medium heat, never boiling, or you will end up with rice that is overcooked on the outside and crunchy inside, this is not the desired consistency! This goes on for about 15 minutes, you don’t have to stir or watch it constantly, but don’t be a stranger to your pan. When the rice feels slightly firm to touch (al dente in chef speak) you’re almost there. Add your butter and parmesan, a squeeze of lemon, salt and pepper and stir it all in. Your risotto should have a nice sheen to it, it should have an almost pouring consistency. You can add anything you like to risotto, veggies, cheese,
FOOD MATTERS
sausage, bacon, pesto, left over chicken from Sunday lunch, go for it, empty the fridge, just make sure it is all cooked before you add it to the risotto. Any leftover can be turned into arancini, just roll them into balls, stuff some cheese in the middle, breadcrumb and fry….or make into little cakes, that can be pan fried and finished in the oven. Risotto, the dinner that keeps giving, your new best friend! Don’t forget we love hearing about and seeing your dishes, use the #figtreeat36 so we can see! Don’t be afraid to get involved. We love it!

Less pain, more gain for B&B owner Julie
Julie Baldwin enjoying a new lease of life
Julie Baldwin runs a beautiful B&B, ‘Ryelands’, in Carkeel, Cornwall. Business is thriving and with its stunning views it’s not hard to see why. However, it has not always been that way, in fact she used to close-out rooms, rather than have full occupancy, because Julie simply could not manage the workload. “I have Plantar Fasciitis,” said Julie. “At times I could barely walk and I couldn’t cope with having every room let in my accommodation. I had to restrict how many bookings were taken and the business was suffering, but this was the only option, in order for me to manage the pain. I also had to stop dancing, which I loved.” All that has changed since a visit to Foot Solutions store on Royal Parade. Julie headed to Plymouth city centre, after a friend had recommended Foot Solutions. “My friend had said, ‘just go in and talk to them’ and I had
nothing to lose, so I did.” One of the store’s trained Pedorthists gave Julie a free foot health assessment and asked her about her symptoms, and how she had been treating them. “I had tried physiotherapy, acupuncture and reflexology but nothing helped me,” said Julie. “Foot Solutions explained Plantar Fasciitis to me and for the first time, I was able to fully understand my condition.” Informed by the results of the foot health assessment, Julie was recommended a pair of shoes with an over the counter insole. “The care I received was unbelievable, and the results were too,” said Julie. “I literally limped into the store, almost in tears and I skipped out!” A few weeks later, Julie had her custom orthotic insert fitted at the store, and the improvement continues. “I am getting better all the time,” said Julie. “I’m looking forward to taking up
dancing again, business is booming and I’ve also found some lovely summer sandals at Foot Solutions. The service provided by the staff at the Plymouth store at the initial assessment, along with their after care service is outstanding – as I continue to get better and have many pain free days, I’d say it’s worth every penny!” For a free appointment call Foot Solutions Plymouth or visit their store on Royal Parade in the city centre.

Stiltskin’s characterisation of Bottom in Midsummer Night’s Dream
New take on Midsummer Night’s Dream Stiltskin Theatre Company has a busy programme of events over the summer months - including a special twist on a Shakespeare classic. As always, their popular shows will take place at The Soapbox Children’s Theatre in Devonport Park. First up is Stiltskin’s presentation of Jack and the Beanstalk which runs from June 8 to 22. Stiltskin love a traditional tale, so they will be creating a veritable feast of magic beans, overgrown beanstalks, golden hens and talking harps, not to mention a bad-tempered giant and a very nimble Jack in the version of .Jack and the Beanstalk. It’s time for Wonderland from July 13 to August 7 with a delightful magical encounter for babies and toddlers. Stiltskin invite you and your tiny one to an immersive and sensory theatre experience with movement, music, texture and light. Then as part of Stiltskin’s ‘discover Shakespeare’ programme they launch a special adaptation of A MidSummer Night’s Dream for children and young people. Join Chop and Block, two foolish story-tellers, who find themselves in the fairy forest and re-tell the comic story of one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays.

local market and what Nissan customers want: “Businesses want the peace of mind of care-free motoring, which is what they get with the packages we are able to provide,” she said. “The flexible options are designed to meet any needs a business might have. And whether you’re looking for a single business vehicle, or a fleet, you can have complete confidence that all aspects of your motoring needs are taken care of. Whatever you need, whether it’s booking a service or arranging a courtesy car, just give me a call, we’ll take care of everything so you can carry on taking care of your business.” And then, of course, there’s the quality that comes as standard with a Nissan vehicle. For example, the tough but stylish Navara pick-up isn’t just ideal for businesses such as gardening, building and water sports, it also doubles up as a great family car, with five heated seats, all-round camera, reverse camera and alloy wheels on most models. As with all Nissan commercial vehicles, the Navara has a five-year under 100,000 miles warranty which includes RAC roadside assistance with home-start and puncture repair, and a courtesy car to keep your business on the road at all times. If it’s a company car or fleet you’re after, then look no further than the market leading SUV, the Qashqai - which was named the Auto Express Car of the Year of the past 30 years, so you know you’re onto a winner right from the start.

GARDENING MATTERS By Fiona Newton and Rebecca Rose of Plymouth Garden Centre Gardening has become quite the ‘in thing’ across all generations over the last decade – and gardening follows trends in much the same way as the fashion industry! The good news is that, unlike fashion, nothing ever goes out of favour, we simply build upon it! It is also one of the benefits of having a small space garden where container planting allows for so much more room for you to design, change, learn and develop. You can move your pots around to change the look depending on what is in flower at any given time. You have the freedom to change plants, pots, colour and layout depending on what you like each year! So, let’s have a look at the trends for Summer 2019 and let your imagination plan your garden! The possibilities are endless! Colour Of The Year The colour for this year is Living Coral. A serene, gentle shade of peach/orange, it was embraced at Chelsea Flower Show and is a perfect shade to highlight the increasing awareness in nature and environmentalism. These lupins are the perfect match to the colour trend!
Nature Trends The natural wildlife theme and creating a wildlife friendly garden has really taken off this year. The bee population is in a sharp decline, and it is vitally important, particularly in a city where green spaces are few and far between, to have flowers that bees can use, not just for collecting nectar, but to rest and feed themselves too. The trend this year is for pollinator friendly plants and wildflowers, in gentle shades interspersed with bursts of colour. Some of our bestsellers are listed here: Geums – the single flowers (left) are loved by bees, and they flower from Spring all the way through to late Summer. Easy to grow and need only a regular feed, water and deadheading. The
Summer f for your g
popular varieties this year are ‘Totally Tangerine’, ‘Mai Tai’ and ‘Scarlet Tempest’. Verbascum - as with Geums, bees are mad for this plant too. They again have a long flowering period, and require only simple care of feed, water and deadheading. We love the ‘Jackie In Pink’, ‘Jackie In Yellow’, ‘Jackie In Spots’ and ‘Pink Kisses’ (pictured left) varieties. Alliums – making a comeback this year, and very popular at Chelsea for its natural, wildflower look. Adored by bees, striking and extraordinarily easy to grow from a bulb! Strong stalks (even withstood a nine year old and a football!) hold the flower head upright above the foliage and the gentle purple flowers attract bees in their numbers (pictured right). Drought tolerant, easy to take care of and even after the flower has finished, the dried flowerhead still looks attractive in the border (or snip them off and put in a vase for a beautiful dried flower arrangement). Salvia – extremely popular for many years, the salvia attracts friendly bees in their hundreds: our displays are literally buzzing all summer! Salvia ‘Love and Wishes’ (pictured left) and ‘Kisses and Wishes’ are particularly beautiful varieties, flowering until autumn, aromatic and attracts all pollinators. Lavender – English lavender has been a staple for many years and that is not showing any signs of stopping now! Highly aromatic, a perfect specimen for a natural garden, it is quintessentially, patriotically and proudly English! The benefits of combination planting lavender with roses has become very popular; it helps attract the beneficial insects, reduce aphids, and they compliment each other with scent and colour.
Plant of the month - Dahlias Dahlias must be one of the most diverse plants grown in gardens and allotments. With so much variety in size, shape, style and colour, it’s not surprising it’s a popular choice! Red, purple, pink, white, yellow and pastels, we don’t think there is a colour they can’t produce! They flower profusely from summer to autumn. Perfect for containers, in the border and for cut flowers too (if you can bring yourself to do it!). Regular feeding and deadheading will keep them flowering for longer. They also require a good dose of sunshine to flower, so place in a sunny spot. To overwinter, dig up the tubers and store, replanting the following season.

fashion garden... Jobs for July
• July is a time of rapid growth. Sweet peas need rings to keep them in place on the canes, pinch out the side shoots from the main stem to give exhibition blooms. • Perennial plants are growing tall now, so get support rings to help to keep them vertical against the prevailing winds. • Hanging baskets will be filling out now and will benefit from a liquid feed regularly. • Roses will have finished the first flush of flowers. Deadhead and feed regularly to encourage further blooming. • Sit back, relax, fire up the BBQ and enjoy your garden.
Bee Houses There is something quite special about seeing wildlife active in your garden, and you can aid their whole life cycle by adding a bee house for the larvae. We have lots of options in store, and they make the perfect gift for the garden enthusiast. Secret Spaces Our gardens have become a place for socialising and living, not just digging and weeding. We loved the theme of ‘Secret Spaces’ appearing at Chelsea this year. The emphasis was on having your own secret area of the garden for solitude, reflection and relaxation. Large foliage plants such as tree ferns, ferns, cordylines and olive trees, as well as fast growing climbers like Trachelospermum or Raymond Evison Clematis can help create a small area. Take with you a cosy blanket, glass of wine and immerse yourself in your favourite book. Archways, pergolas or our arbours are perfect for this idyllic scene. Arbours painted in soothing colours, such as this Orchard Arbour in Lavender and Stone; coupled with solar lights and you have your own serene, secret space too. Just remember though, the ‘showy’ varieties with masses of petals make access to the pollen difficult for pollinators. There are single flowered dahlias or varieties with ‘open’ flowerheads that bees and butterflies just love too. Happy Gardening! Becky and Fiona

How can I a It’s not always possible to avoid paying inheritance tax completely and it’s important if you are trying to avoid it that you stay within the rules. There are a number of ways to limit the amount you will need to pay and a number of reliefs that can be utilised. Here are my top ten tips on how to limit inheritance tax: Make a valid will
by Matthew Rose Partner GA Solicitors
Ensure that your will is up to date and that you have taken advice from a qualified practitioner. They can clearly inform you how it should be structured to avoid unnecessary inheritance tax. Without a valid will it is possible that the government rules, called intestacy provisions, will apply which could have the unintended consequence of causing inheritance tax to become payable on your death. Make use of your allowances The current inheritance tax threshold (also known as the nil rate band) is £325,000. If you keep your estate below this threshold then no inheritance tax will be payable. The nil rate band is transferable between spouses and civil partners, meaning couples effectively have a nil rate band of £650,000. A new exemption, called the residence nil rate band, is available in certain circumstances and could provide up to an additional £350,000 exemption from Inheritance Tax for married couples. The rules are complex so it is vital you take advice in order to ensure your estate is structured to claim this relief.

FINANCE MATTERS
avoid inheritance tax? Make gifts In most cases, as long as you survive seven years from making a gift it will be free from inheritance tax. You can also give away £3,000 in total every tax year without attracting any inheritance tax on your death. Certain gifts, on occasions such as marriages, and other small gifts, are also free from inheritance tax. Not all gifts will be free from inheritance tax so it is important you seek advice if you are planning on making gifts. Give away your excess income If you can prove the gifts you are making came out of your excess income then such gifts will be disregarded for inheritance tax purposes. To successfully obtain this relief it is vital that detailed records are kept. Take advice on how best to record this. Make use of trusts If you wish to give away assets but are worried about losing control, or about passing on a large inheritance to a young or vulnerable beneficiary, then a trust is a perfect solution. After seven years, a gift in to trust will be free from inheritance tax and you can continue to retain control of the assets, deciding who benefits and how. Remember though, you will not be able to benefit from the trust yourself. Leave to charity Gifts to charity are exempt from inheritance tax. On death, if you leave 10% of your net estate after exemptions to charity then the inheritance tax rate will be 36% instead of 40%.
Write life insurance policies in trust Life insurance policies will pay out to your estate which could increase the amount of inheritance tax payable or even bring a non-taxable estate above the tax threshold. By writing your insurance policies in trust they will pay out free from inheritance tax and your chosen trustees will have much more flexibility on how the funds are used. Take advice on your pension Some pensions carry inheritance tax free death benefits and many pensions can now be passed on free from inheritance tax. Obtain financial advice Some investments carry inheritance tax reliefs. You should seek advice from a qualified financial adviser to explore the potential ways of investing to avoid inheritance tax. Maximising reliefs for business owners and farmers If you own a business or a farm then key reliefs could be available to you to avoid inheritance tax. It will be important to take advice to ensure the appropriate reliefs are utilised and to allow your business to continue after your death, or simply to optimise the value in the business for your family. If you want more information on how to avoid unnecessary inheritance tax, speak to me or a member of our specialist inheritance tax team today. We can work with your financial adviser to assist you in finding the best options for you.

TRAVEL MATTERS
Cruise lines setting the pace in the travel market I’m always very keen to write about new products or exciting new resorts that continue to make the travel industry one of the fastest moving sectors in the world. There is no question that the cruise industry is the sector that is moving faster than any other. In the past few months we have had the launches of the Bellissima from MSC, and the very distinctive Celebrity Edge with a ‘floating carpet restaurant’ that moves up and down the side of the ship. Both companies are not only aiming for a bigger share of the cruise market, but also more importantly the higher spenders looking for five star quality. I was very fortunate a few years ago to sail on the ‘SeaDream’ from Rome to Nice. The ‘SeaDream’ is referred to as a yacht, not a cruise ship. Carrying 112 passengers, with 95 staff, the level of service and quality of food were the best I’ve ever experienced on the ocean. So I was very interested to receive details of the new ‘Scenic Eclipse’ – described as the world’s By Travel first Discovery Yacht. Most of you have probably heard of Scenic Holidays, either through their allinclusive escorted tour programme, or their fivestar river cruises, but most would not know that Emerald Waterways is their sister company, who themselves have eight ships offering European and South East Asia river cruising. So, what makes the ‘Scenic Eclipse’ different from what others have to offer? Scenic Eclipse combines a wealth of world-class facilities with the opportunity for unrivalled exploration. Their handcrafted itineraries are full of rare opportunities and extraordinary experiences, from the far flung reaches of Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, to the vibrant Caribbean and South American coastlines, and the culture-rich Mediterranean. With an almost one to one staff-to-guest ratio, time on board will be one of unparalleled indulgence. From the ultimate Spa Sanctuary, to the expansive array of dining Scenic Eclipse has an on-board Zodiac, submarine and helicopter experiences, spacious lounges and bars, outdoor terraces, and multiple pool areas. You might be thinking this sounds great, but this doesn’t seem that different to most other luxury offerings at sea? Well, this is where the ‘Scenic Eclipse’ turns into something you may have seen in a James Bond Movie! Firstly, it has its very own submarine the Scenic Neptune. Custom built for optimal sightseeing and capable of diving to a depth of 300 metres with seating for up to six guests plus pilot, Scenic Neptune will provide guests with an incredible experience as the craft glides through the ocean. And there’s more! It also has its own on-board helicopter for passengers seeking venture beyond the horizon. For an additional cost,
guests can take to the sky, giving them access to an exciting range of excursions. Passengers also have the use of their Zodiacs, kayaks and e-bikes, in-suite mini-bar, all on board dining, and complimentary premium branded beverages all day, every day. The Discovery Yacht really does offer a new level of experience, especially in the field of expedition cruises. Of course, everything comes at a price. For a 16 day Antarctica in depth cruise, departing from Buenos Aires March 5 2020, prices start from £11,980 per person. A 23 Day Transatlantic Explorer, from Buenos Aires to Lisbon departing April 3 2020, is from £8,695 per person. Travelling on the ‘Scenic Eclipse’ would be a once in a lifetime experience, but who said living the life of ‘007 ‘was going to be cheap! I have been on a few Caribbean cruises over the years, visiting some fabulous islands and drinking far too many rum punches! A Caribbean cruise is perfect for some winter sunshine, plus the chance to see some of the smaller islands Expert that are not directly accessible from the UK. I have cruised from Barbados and Miami, with the Miami cruises sailing on Royal Caribbean ships. Most cruises from Miami sailing for less than nine nights, are classified as ‘fun cruises.’ These cater for a younger age group in comparison to longer cruises and visit several islands, one being a private island owned by Royal Caribbean, normally at the start, or the end of the Itinerary. When I cruised, we visited the island of CocoCay in the Bahamas. This was a fun day where the ship’s crew organised a beach barbeque, plus lots of water activities. Royal Caribbean have recently announced a $250 milliondollar transformation to the island of CocoCay, offering eye-opening amenities for all it’s cruise passengers. Named ‘Perfect Day at CocoCay’ the once sleepy private island now offers the Thrill Waterpark featuring 13 water slides, the Caribbean’s largest wave pool, a 1,600-footlong zip line, and a helium balloon tethered to the ground that provides guests with a vantage point 450 feet in the air. If you’re not into waterparks, the island also offers long stretches of golden sandy beaches where you can relax, away from the crowd. Later in the year, the construction of Coco Beach Club will be completed. This will feature the Bahamas’ first overwater cabanas, each with its own slide into the ocean. There will also be a 2,600-foot beachfront infinity pool. CoCocay is the first in a planned collection of Royal Caribbean ‘Perfect Day’ islands. Additional

locations are expected in the Caribbean, Asia and Australia. This massive investment from Royal Caribbean is already a major move away from just introducing new ships, but also offering exclusives experiences in the ports they visit. It also offers those who may not have cruised before something exclusive not offered by other cruise lines. It helps the cruise line stagger itineraries and reduce crowds in popular ports. On announcing the opening of CocoCay, Royal Caribbean also announced the cancellation of its sailings from Southampton in 2020, on the Independence of The Seas. The ship has been moved to the Caribbean to add more itineraries featuring CocoCay. This enables them to make the most of their massive investment and proving it’s not just the ships cruise lines are investing in, but also the destination ports you experience. Happy Holidays!

BUSINESS MATTERS
Business is booming at HBH Woolacotts
The huge HBH Woolacotts store at Coypool retail park. Inset: Floor manager Paul Solomon
Just off Plymouth Road as you head into Plympton from Marsh Mills is Coypool retail park – formerly the site of DIY retailer B&Q, their huge store is now home to one of the south west’s leading independent electrical retailers. HBH Woolacott opened their store at Coypool in 2017, 41 years after their first store opened in Bude. More well-known in their native Cornwall, Plymouth shoppers may be surprised to learn Woolacotts have been in the city for many years. “I started working at the UK’s first Panasonic store on New George Street as a 16 year old YTS trainee, in 1990,” said floor manager, Paul Solomon. “It was owned by HBH Woolacotts, along with the Sony Centre next door.” The Panasonic store and Sony Centre are now located in

Paul isn’t the only member of Woolacotts’ friendly team to have learned his trade during decades with the company. Store manager Nigel Facey joined the Panasonic store in 1996, and it is testament to the family ethos of HBH Woolacotts that their staff stay with them for so long. The company is still owned and run by the Hemmerle family, who together with their team ensure that the reputation for great customer service that Woolacotts enjoys in Cornwall, is carried on in their extensive Plymouth showroom. When you visit the store, first impressions are of sheer size as your eyes take in the range of products available – TV and home cinema, audio equipment, home appliances, vacuum cleaners, and computers fill the ground floor. Upstairs on the mezzanine the Cook Centre offers everything from cookers to kitchen utensils, including the largest display of range cookers in Plymouth. Major brands abound and the overall impression is of quality and choice. In addition, Kettle Co Kitchens have their showroom in the store, with three fully functioning kitchens on display. After 29 years with the company, Nigel believes customer

service from Woolacotts is far better than the national electrical retail chains can offer - both in store, and after customers make their purchases. “Our staff have continuous training in a range of products, and their expertise is valued by shoppers making choices on what will suit them best. “Unlike most of the national chains, we can actually service and repair nearly all the electrical goods we sell, in our own service department. So if anything does go wrong our customers don’t have to deal with manufacturers or third party repair shops – we take care of all that here, and we usually provide loan equipment to tide them over until we have fixed the problem.” A visit to the store is essential if you’re considering your next electrical purchase – there are over 5,000 products in stock and more online. The store’s website, www.hbhwoolacotts.co.uk, makes a play on the name, emphasising that they are Happy to Be Helpful - but they can be forgiven that tenuous acronym when you consider the high quality service and range of goods backing it up.

Kirsty Thyer, Director at The Family Law Company, explains why she’s totally committed to family law. What area of family law do you have a particular interest in?
Kirsty Thyer
I specialise in what’s called ‘public law’. I’m a Director in the Public Law Team and a member of the Law Society’s Children Panel. I act for children or parents where Social Services are involved with a family, usually in circumstances where they might want to take a child into care. The Local Authority issues care proceedings and a Children’s Guardian is appointed – the Guardian in turn appoints a Solicitor to act for the child, which is where I come in.
What leads to the possibility of a child being taken into care? Such a child is likely to be on a Child Protection Plan. If there is no improvement in issues such as the child being permanently dirty, hungry and tired at school, or the child is thought to be at risk of significant harm in some other way, the Local Authority will usually have a formal meeting with the parent/s. At this point, the parent should speak to a lawyer as soon as possible - the lawyer will try to see if an agreement can be reached without the need to go to Court. Sometimes, the concerns
for a child are so grave that the Local Authority issues an urgent application which is dealt with by the Court on the same day. This is usually when a child has suffered an unexplained injury or is at immediate risk of significant harm.
What part of your work is the most fulfilling? What I do can often be lifechanging for a child and the parents, and I believe I owe it to them to provide the best possible representation. It is often about developing a rapport, treating each client as an individual and listening to what they have to say. The most important thing is to achieve the right outcome for the child. Sometimes this means a child stays with their parents but sometimes it sadly means they go forward for adoption or remain in foster care. Whilst it is my duty to represent each client’s interests fearlessly, it is also important that they receive objective advice. To know I’ve had a positive impact on a child’s future is rewarding.
Is there something you’re especially proud of in your career? This year I became a Director of The Family Law Company which was a really proud moment for me. I was also Highly Commended in the Devon & Somerset Law
Society Awards 2019 for Leader of the Year – the award was presented in Exeter Cathedral which was a stunning venue. The company also won Law Firm of the Year 1 – 10 Partners, so there were some great celebrations!
What do you particularly like about working at The Family Law Company? I genuinely like the team structure of the company. The Care Team, which I head up, is often out working on cases and at Court. We are fortunate to have a team of paralegals in the office meaning we can provide the best service to clients – basically if their lawyer is in Court, they are still able to speak to one of our paralegals who knows about their case. This is crucial if a client is going through a crisis; just being able to talk to someone can help them immensely.
Your area of law can be stressful and fast-paced. What do you do to cope? I’m lucky to live in a beautiful part of the country, and I’m a big believer in fresh air. When I need downtime, I like to walk on the South West Coast Path, often in Cornwall. As soon as I get out of the car at the beach, I relax.

Tamar view Nurseries growing nicely Tamar View Nurseries started life over 50 years ago at Wearde Quay by local couple Mike and Pauline Hooper. They first rented a cottage and land and grew strawberries which were transported by train to Covent Garden, London for the early season market. When strawberries weren’t in season they concentrated on retailing fruit and vegetables, either through their shop at the quay and on Mikes fruit and vegetable rounds throughout Cornwall. Eventually the business outgrew its site, and the first parcel of land was purchased at Carkeel, where the garden centre stands today in 1985. It was their intention to continue with the fruit business but when one day a customer asked “Do you sell plants? the rest is history! Mike and Pauline then leased the business to Francis Barrett in 1988 to allow them to concentrate on growing the garden centre side of the business. How things have changed over the years! Originally garden centres were very plant focused, but with commercial competitiveness growing garden centres have had to diversify into what you see today. With so many similar businesses now part of a group and moving away from core gardening
Tamar View Nurseries is proud to be a family owned independent business with gardening and plants at
its heart. Today the Garden Centre employ 41 members of staff now through its shop and restaurant supporting over 8 locally owned businesses on its site as franchises. Even with all this progression and change, Mike and Pauline and the team still have plenty of plans for the future.... So watch this space!
