Student successes celebrated at college end of term awards New police team for the Torpoint area
Devon and Cornwall Police have appointed a new Neighbourhood Policing Team for Torpoint and the surrounding areas.
PC Steve Wilson has now been confirmed in post as the new Neighbourhood Beat Manager for the areas of Torpoint, Rame Peninsula, Seaton and Downderry. He has been appointed following a successful secondment in the position for the previous 10 months. Steve has been a front line police officer for the past 10 years and worked in Plymouth for eight of these. Steve has lived in the area for over 25 years and is keen to get on and make a difference in the community. Steve will be supported in his role by PCSO Sid Lawrence. Sid is also experienced in his role with 13 years’ service. He has close links with Torpoint, having previously served for many years in the Royal Navy. With both officers having strong links with the area they are dedicated to providing a first class service to all. Over the last few months they have been reinvigorating the delivery of neighbourhood policing in the area, attempting to make themselves available and accountable to the people who they serve. During last summer, pop up police surgeries known as ‘Copper’s Corner’ were introduced which proved to be a very good way of connecting with the community. They have also forged strong links with the schools, local officials, health care and the military. To continue to build a relationship with the community, Steve and Sid would like to invite members of the public to an open evening at the Council Chambers in Torpoint. This open forum will have a selection of local representatives available to ask questions highlighting any local issues of concern. The open evening will be on Tuesday May 21 starting at 7pm.
Three students from South East Cornwall have been recognised at City College’s Spring Student of the Term awards.
Tom Briggs, 18, from Torpoint collected the Science Student of the Term award. When Tom’s step-dad sadly passed away, the biomedical science student demonstrated incredible grit, determination and resilience, focusing on his goal of going to university and maintained a focus on revising for and sitting his science exams despite the sad events. Tom said: “When I came to the college, I had no formal qualifications. I was really pleased to gain my Level 2 in Applied Science and now I’m nearing the end of my Level 3, I’m really proud to have received an offer to study biomedical science at the University of Plymouth. It’s been challenging for so many reasons, but the College has been really supportive and it’s great to be recognised for my hard work. Hannah Tustain, who is 17 and from Millbrook was named as Music Performing & Production Arts Student of the Term. Hannah has a hearing impairment, but has developed excellent personal strategies for ensuring there is no barrier to her learning. As a compassionate and caring member of her group, Hannah always looks to support other students and has already made a significant contribution to College life through a number of performance projects, including playing a number of roles in a recent performance of One Million Tiny Plays About Britain’ by Craig Taylor. She is currently working with her group on a new piece of original theatre which explores modes of communication, highlighting the perils of not understanding a given situation, particularly for the hearing impaired. Hannah said: “I love my course at college. My confidence in acting is really developing and it’s been great to play a part in developing the signing skills of staff within the department in order to better support

other students like myself. Hopefully, this will help me to further develop my skills and scope as a theatre maker.” Ismail Mustafa, 33, from Saltash was named English Student of the Term. When Ismail’s lecturer first met him in 2013, he could not write, or read any more than his own name. Over the past few years he has worked hard to develop his literacy skills, whilst raising a young family and working. Ismail said: “I really enjoy the college environment and I am really proud of what I have achieved over the past few months. Coming to college has helped me to develop my literacy skills. I am now able to complete forms and deal with correspondence with confidence. I am looking forward to completing my Level 1 Functional Skills in English and this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my lecturers.” The Student of the Term event recognises students who have gone above and beyond making a positive contribution to the college or local community, or overcoming personal challenges to achieve in their studies. The award winners were joined by family, friends and their nominating teachers. They enjoyed a delicious celebration meal prepared by the College’s catering and hospitality students before receiving their awards. Penny Wycherley, Principal of City College, said: “The Student of the Term awards are an important event for the College and a great way to celebrate the success of our students. Events like these are a celebration of some of the remarkable achievements of our students and recognise publicly their hard work and commitment. “These students, some of whom have had to overcome additional barriers, are each progressing incredibly well and deserve to be congratulated. The staff at the College are enormously proud of their accomplishments and the way in which they reflect so well on the City. It really is an honour to celebrate the outstanding qualities and achievements of our students and to share in their successes with family, friends and teaching staff.”
Exhibition celebrates 200th anniversary of That’s the way to do it! St James Church Liskeard Arts talk in April entitled ‘Punch and Judy’ was a roaring success.
Speaker Bertie Pierce explained the history of Punch and Judy and demonstrated the use of his ‘swazzle’, a device in the mouth which gives Punch his famous sound. Besides being very informative, Bertie proved to be a comedian in his own right. The next meeting, which is the last this season, will be at Liskeard Public Hall at at 7.30 pm on May 7 with refreshments from 7pm. The subject is ‘Foreigners in London - artists who changed the course of British history.’ Non members are always welcome upon payment of £6. The new season begins on September 10 with a talk by Hugh Elwood on The Golden Age of Watercolourists. More details from lizundy@hotmail.com.
The 200th anniversary of St James Church in Torpoint has been marked with a special photographic exhibition.
The first service to be held in the church was on April 11 1819 - and it lasted three hours! On April 11 this year the church held a photographic exhibition with members of the community donating copies of photos of a wide range of events that have taken place in the church over the last 200 years. The exhibition was a huge success and the day ended with a birthday tea and a service of celebration.

Welcome to the first issue of the Torpoint and District Chronicle, previously known as the Torpoint Advertiser.
The Advertiser has been published for over 30 years, firstly designed and produced by local printers Deltor to promote businesses in the area, and more recently by Cornerstone Vision who have published it for the last five years. Cornerstone has many years of experience in community media, publishing similar community titles in Plymouth and Saltash, and after careful consideration have decided to update the format of the Advertiser, to increase circulation and to carry even more local content. The Torpoint and District Chronicle will carry more articles and information for local people, cementing its position as a quality source of interest for its readers. This includes more extensive coverage of local events in our ‘Out and About’ section and also details of local groups and organisations in our Community Directory. The aim is to provide a reliable platform for local news and events and we will be pleased to hear from local people and organisations about what’s going on in the area. Instead of printing on gloss paper, the Torpoint Chronicle now has a true community newspaper feel, which is increasingly popular in towns and cities across the UK. In addition, we have increased distribution by an extra 1,000 homes in the local area going up from 6,500 to 7,500 letterbox deliveries. We are building on the fantastic heritage of the Torpoint Advertiser and looking forward to another 30 years. If you have an event listing, interesting story or news item you think would be suitable for the Chronicle, please send an email to info@cornerstonevision.com. We welcome submissions but cannot guarantee publication. We accept press releases in the form of text documents and images in JPG or TIFF format (high resolution please).

A local community interest group are celebrating another successful tree planting season in woodlands on the Rame Peninsula.
Pigshill and Clarrick Woodlands CIC have recently completed the second stage of their three-year replanting plan at the woodlands within the Rame Head Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The woodlands above Millbrook were left scarred when disease ripped through the Larch, forcing them to be felled and cleared. Replanting has been the top priority for the group and their volunteers. Thanks to a grant from Cornwall AONB's Environment Landscape Fund, the group was able to bring in professional help from two local groundsmen to help the directors clear the access lanes ready for the volunteers to plant the trees. And with the help of plenty of girl power the replanting day in March proved a big success. Richard Gavens, one of the directors of Pigshill and Clarrick Woodlands CIC explained: “When the Larch were removed, unfortunately there was a complete mess, with swathes of brash and unwanted timber everywhere. Whilst being great for the bug life, it has made safe replanting very difficult, especially
when compounded by several years of bramble growth on top. "The grant from the AONB allowed us to accelerate our planting plans for this year by completing this extremely difficult area. We can now look forward to planting our Hazel coppice next winter knowing the hardest part is firmly behind us”
”Our main replanting day in March went brilliantly - thanks to lovely weather and a fantastic bunch of ladies and local families who showed us how to get a job done. "With growing awareness of climate change, it’s great to see so many people stepping forward to make a special contribution towards both the local and global environment. Important journeys tend to start from home.” The last 12 months have seen some big changes for the group formally known as Maker Woodlands. Receiving
professional assistance through the Plunkett Foundation’s Making Local Woods Work scheme, they have now taken on the lease of the 66 acre woodlands direct from the Mount Edgcumbe Estate. Two of the directors, Oscar Whiteford and Richard Gavens, have put aside paid work elsewhere to dedicate time to building a sustainable foundation for the group and bring the woodlands back into active management for the first time in over 40 years. The group have also received assistance recently from Millbrook Parish Council’s Mendinnick Solar Fund to buy a portable winch to assist working on the difficult terrain. Richard added: “We’ve been heartened by all the genuine local support we’ve received from people for taking on this daunting task. We’re especially pleased to be selected to take part this year in Cornwall AONB’s 60th anniversary celebrations as part of the ‘Kerdroya’ project being run by Golden Tree Productions, the celebration of the Cornish Hedge”. The group also have Flint and Steel Forest School operating on site and plan a growing programme of events and active volunteering opportunities. More information can be found on their Facebook page as Pigshill Woods.
Big leap forward on community housing Provision of community housing on the Rame Peninsula has been given a major boost with a grant of nearly £50,000 to The Peninsula Trust.
Nationwide, the UK's biggest building society has awarded the Trust £48,000 to pay for a new worker for two years. The Peninsula Trust will use the grant to support community action for new homes: refurbish derelicts, reopen empty houses, promote sharing, take on ex-council houses and create local jobs. Manager Simon Ryan said: “We’ve made a start on local housing projects and we’ve got terrific community support behind us, but the amount of detailed, complicated
effort needed is huge - so the chance to have someone devoted specifically to this is going to make a load of difference and really push the work along”. Nationwide, offers grant support for groups dealing with the many issues around housing in the South West area, and has made £500,000 available to help make a difference across communities across the region. Nationwide invited applications for grants of up to £50,000 for housing projects that have the potential to strengthen communities and help make a difference in local areas, ranging from innovative new housing, improving conditions, to supporting the most vulnerable. A Community Board of Nationwide
members, employees and local housing experts was appointed to have a say on which local community projects were supported. Dan Still, Nationwide’s regional director for the South West, said: “We know that there are many people who have been homeless or have experienced family or close friends without a home of their own, so it’s imperative that we do something about this. “Helping people into homes of their own is at the heart of what we do as a building society, which is why we’re making funding available for local housing projects. In fact, we’re making £22 million available for the next five years across the UK to do just this and ensure everyone has a place fit to call home.”

I*(said THINK I HAVE ENOUGH PLANTS* no gardener ever) As the Gardeners’ Garden Centre, Tamar View Nurseries makes plants the heart of its business.
“We offer easy, down to earth (pun intended) advice to take the stress out and therefore add to the fun of gardening” explains Anthea, centre manager. “We’re very approachable.” “We are also gardeners. Hazel is a real plant enthusiast, so her garden is crammed full of all the plants she loves with lots of rare and unusual varieties. Dean says his garden is tropical with hot accents of colour. And mine is more of a riot of colour in the summer and buzzes with bees and butterflies in the morning. There’s no right or wrong way to garden – it’s all down to personal taste – but we can help you make your ideas work in practice working with the preferences particular plants have. “I would say that we spend a fair amount of our own wages on the plants that surround us at work. “New or novice gardeners need not be afraid to ask questions as you won’t be bamboozled by
THE GARDENERS’ GARDEN CENTRE
complicated names and jargon. Don’t be afraid to ask anything however stupid it may sound as we have heard it all before! And as plants grow best in conditions they like, it’s pretty important to get as much advice as you can before you buy.”
THIS MONTH’S SPECIAL OFFERS
Plants mostly come from local growers. Plant Manager Hazel explains, “Customers tell us they like buying our plants because they are good quality at low prices and that once planted in their gardens they actually grow. When our founder, Mike Hooper started this business, he was always known for “having a deal “, although you had to buy it when you saw it as it was often a one off. Mike’s fondness for passing on savings to customers is something we are very proud of.”

A vintage tea party held at Torpoint Football Club raised £700 for good causes. The event, held on Mother’s Day, was organised by Maria Trethewey of Any Occasions Catering who was assisted by family members on the day.
Nearly 80 people attended and raised £654, which was topped up to £700 by Maria. The money raised was divided between Maria’s son Sam towards his Three Peaks Challenge and for her son-in-law Mark Zinn who is taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon.
All the money they raise for their efforts will go to the British Heart Foundation. Maria said: “It was a wonderful day and a big thanks to everyone who attended and all those who helped on the day.”
William’s poignant poem A nine-year-old schoolboy from Torpoint has penned a moving poem about the First World War.
William Frier, who attends Carbeile Primary School, wrote the verses as part of a lesson about the Great War and his efforts impressed his mum Karen, who wanted to share the poem with Chronicle readers. William, who enjoys history and PE at school said: “Our teacher Mr Long gave us a lot of information about the war and read poems to us about the trenches. He then asked us to write a poem about the poppies. I decided to write mine in the first person and made it look like a diary.” Karen said: “I was really touched when I read William’s poem for the first time. He has shown a real understanding of the horror of war.” William’s poem is shown below:
World War One As I make my way through trenches I hold my breath As my next breath is blessed As bodies fall I really feel like the Germans rule Day by day I pray about all of those who fell that day I’m in my trench lying My mother is probably crying I’m slowly dying I feel like the world’s spinning I don’t think we’re winning Now all the war is done and dusted Because of all the men who fought for us In Flanders Fields poppies grow But you will never understand how horrific it was though

So much to do this summer at Mount Edgcumbe Park Summer is a perfect time for getting out and about and enjoying some sunshine and fresh air.
However, travel costs and entry fees can add up. It’s good to know that nearby at Mount Edgcumbe Park there’s a whole host of activities planned over the summer period some free and some very reasonably priced. The great thing about Mount Edgcumbe is the sheer scale and it offers everything from quiet walks away from the crowds to family events and even a few beaches making it ideal for picnics! With reasonable rates for parking cars and a regular bus service it’s reachable for everyone. Its very mild climate makes it an all year round place to visit with the National Camellia Collection very often in bloom at the start of the year. This is followed by daffodils as early as February and then there are the bluebells, and we’re not even looking into the amazing formal gardens yet! One of the major free events is on Saturday May 25 and Sunday May 26. A giant figure sitting on a throne, the Green Man is an impressive site and is recreated each year. He presides over the activities including entertainment, stalls, refreshments and other activities. Mount Edgcumbe also provides a great vantage point on June 29 to see the Red Arrows who are booked for the Armed Forces Day on Plymouth Hoe. You won’t get to see the various events on the Hoe itself but there’s a great view of the arial events over Plymouth Sound. Friends of Mount Edgcumbe and the Cornwall Hospice Care are running yet another Classic Car Show on Sunday August 4. A great opportunity to get lost in nostalgia with those beautiful cars from the past. If you need retail therapy the Summer Fair takes place as well. On Wednesday August 14 and Thursday August 15 there’s another Plymouth based event which you can see from Mount Edgcumbe without the journey into town. The British Fireworks Championships are a real spectacle. Provision is made on this occasion for disabled parking at Barn Pool and general parking at Deer Park. The end of August sees the Mount Edgcumbe at War Weekend with the Cornwall Vehicle Trust, on Saturday August 31 and Sunday September 1.

Story and photos by Roy Perring If you are interested in learning more about the history of Mount Edgcumbe House or it’s grounds then there are several talks that might interest you. They usually cost £5 and booking is advisable as spaces are limited. Wednesday May 15 is an hour long talk starting at 11.30am about the History and Heritage of the Earls Garden. Discover the beautiful garden and the surprises hidden away in the various nooks and crannies. Tickets include entry to the House after the talk. If all those TV shows on wildlife excite you, there’s a chance to join in! Saturday June 1 from 8pm to 10.30pm offers the opportunity to join a nocturnal adventure and let the estate’s colonies of bats be your guide. With rare species calling Mount Edgcumbe home, you could be in for a real treat with this expedition. Meeting on the terrace at the front of the house at 8pm, the walk will take approx. 2-3 hours and finish off with hot soup and cost £5. Make sure that you wrap up warm and
wear suitable footwear for the walk. Miss Ivy Events are also holding quite a few get togethers at the estate. First up on Saturday June 8 is a Rum, Drums and Reggae Festival. Offering a complete toast to all things Rum and Reggae, there will be a big selection of rums along with some incredible live Steel Pan Band action from Real Steel and Drum workshops from Shumba Arts. Talented Reggae singer Marley White is also lined up to entertain. Lots of local and independent businesses will be there to offer their compliments to the world of Rum, Drums and Reggae with jewellery, clothing and beauty to name just a few! All set for Black Prince festival
Torpoint and Rame Peninsula Lions are preparing for a number of events in the coming weeks and months.
By Lion Stephen Murray
Members will be taking part in a litter pick over the weekend of May 4 and 5 and this will be followed by one of the year’s major events - the Black Prince Flower Boat Festival on May Bank Holiday Monday May 6. The boat is carried on the shoulders of sailors based at HMS Raleigh through the streets of Millbrook, Kingsand and Cawsand where it is launched in the sea. The significance of the festival is to banish Winter and welcome in summer, asking for a good harvest from land and sea. The festival originated before the First World War, but died out between the wars. However, it was resurrected in 1986 and is believed to be one of the oldest Spring Celtic festivals in Cornwall, rivalling Padstow’s Obby Oss and Helston’s Flurry Dance. The event starts at 10am at Millbrook Village Hall and ends at Cawsand bay at 4.30pm with the launch of the boat. The Lions Club annual Summer Walk for charity takes place on June 23, providing participants with the opportunity to raise much needed funds for their own charity or good cause. The walk covers a 10 km route in the lovely grounds of Mount Edgcumbe estate, starting at 10am with most people finishing finished before lunch. Sponsor forms will be available from the Lions web page at e-clubhouse.org/sites/torpointrame. Preparations for the Summer Fair on July 20 are still in progress and hopefully everything will go well on the day. Gates open at 11am with the Fair starting at 12 noon. The club is co-ordinating a Diabetes Awareness
HMS Raleigh trainees will carry the flower boat
event on October 12, in the Torpoint Council Chambers. The event is in the early planning stages, but the Lions would welcome the views of the community in what they would like the format to be. There is an opportunity to have speakers or information stands or a combination of both, and we welcome any organisation or individual who would like to get involved with helping us to put this event on, please contact Lion Andy Brownhill on 01752 813762. As part of the Lions Clubs commitment to provide aid when natural disasters occur, a Shelterbox is being shipped to victims of the devastating floods in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, along with a donation sent to a Lions club in the area, which ensures that all of the money donated from all over the world is put to good use. Don’t forget that we still have several wheel chairs in stock for those who need to loan one for an unknown period, and you can contact Lion Chris Mackie on Ply 816461 and he will be happy to assist. Our Message in a Bottle campaign is still available to anyone on the Peninsula. The idea is that one of these plastic capsules can be kept in the refrigerator with any or all medication and medical details in case of emergency. All the relevant services are aware of the scheme and will know what to look for and where to find it, and you can pick up one from most doctors‚Äô surgeries or chemists. If you have any comments or questions relating to the Lions club then you can contact us on either of the website able, or approach any Lions Club member.
Members of the Torpoint & Rame Branch, Royal Naval Association celebrated the 36th anniversary of the branch’s foundation at the March meeting.
The branch has certainly come a long way since its first meetings in a pub in Millbrook! As is traditional on such occasions, a ‘bring-a-plate’ buffet was enjoyed by shipmates. Branch vice-chairman, Shipmate Chris Davies, hosted a Dutch auction, in which donated lots were auctioned raising a total of £100, which was matched from the Branch Charity Chest, enabling a donation of £200 to be made to the Torpoint First Responders group towards the cost of a special chair that enables patients to be transported more ergonomically. Two Shipmates have recently joined the Torpoint
& Rame Branch Royal Naval Association group on Facebook. Whatever one’s opinion of social media, it is another way of putting the local RNA’s message out there. So, if you are a Branch member, with a Facebook account, please come and join the group. It’s a closed group, which means that only those who share the Once Navy Always Navy principles will be able to join, so we can communicate in relative security. The next Branch meeting will take place on May 31, at Torpoint Comrades Club from 7.30pm, when members will enjoy farmyard racing. Also on that evening, final bookings will be taken for the branch barbecue, which will be held at the 200 Club on June 28. Further details are available from Branch Secretary, Shipmate Paul Carter on 01752 814453. Yours aye!

Joe (centre) with his sons-in-laws WO2 Jules Cook, Royal Marines (left) and WO1 Paul Bell, who are also serving at HMS Raleigh and will be leaving soon to take up new appointments.
Joe bids farewell to the Navy after 50 years
Having served the Royal Navy in one way or another for 50 years, Joe Heppolette, from Torpoint, is bidding farewell to HMS Raleigh. The 67-year-old has worked at the Royal Navy training establishment in a civilian capacity for just over 16 years. Joe also spent 33 years in the Royal Navy, initially as a Steward and then as a Royal Navy Careers Officer. During his military career he was posted to the base on three occasions as an instructor. Joe now works within the transport department at HMS Raleigh. Joe said: “My highlight of being in the Royal Navy was my 10 years in the careers service. At Raleigh the best part has been working with the
trainees starting when I worked in the Trainee Records Office, and now in the transport department, I still try to engage them in conversation and find out where they are from and the career paths they are following.” Prior to leaving, Joe was presented with a valedictory certificate by the Commanding Officer of HMS Raleigh, Captain Rich Harris. It reads: “You have shown extraordinary dedication through a remarkable 50 years’ service, be it in the Royal Navy or supporting the Service as a civilian member of staff. You have continued to contribute to the output of the Royal Navy and will have had a direct impact on the lives of thousands of trainees. You should be justifiably proud of your achievements and the legacy that you leave behind.”
As Joe heads-off into retirement, his two sons-in-law, Warrant Officer (WO) 1 Paul Bell and WO 2 Jules Cook, Royal Marines, will be shortly following him out of the gates of HMS Raleigh to take on new appointments. WO Bell, HMS Raleigh’s Base Warrant Officer, is due to take up a new posting at Flag Officer Sea Training, while WO2 Cook is leaving the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth to join the Band at the Commando Training Centre, Lympstone. However, the Heppolette family will still be represented at HMS Raleigh by Joe’s daughter, Amanda Bell, who is the Commanding Officer’s Personal Assistant.

A national campaign designed to bring communities closer together has arrived in Kingsand.
Window Wanderland was launched in 2015 and provides the opportunity for local people to see their neighbourhood in a new light. It involves residents in creating fun window display-based walking trails in the dark days of winter. It started in Bristol and involved residents and businesses getting creative with their windows and gardens to create a family friendly art trail. Fore Street on Kingsand was alive for two nights recently with the hustle and bustle of visitors admiring the wide range and creativity of the window displays. There was something for all ages at the free event, which was sponsored by Visit Rame. One of the organisers Harry

Mayor’s Message
by Lambert Keise
The transformation of Torpoint's new Library, Information Service and Community Hub is nearing completion and plans for the grand opening on May 11 are well under way. Please come along and join in the celebrations, view the vast improvements and use the occasion to meet the team together with members of the Torpoint Archives, who are excited to be in a new location. The Tamar II Ferry is currently in dry dock at A&P Falmouth undergoing its five-yearly refit. A public meeting was held on March 26, in the Council Chambers which provided an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions about the prolonged issues caused by the lengthy ferry refit last year. It was well attended by the community and covered many issues including best working practises and real time feedback. Thanks to the officers and councillors who attended the meeting. A progress report will be provided at future council meetings, held in the evening on the third Thursday of each month and is also available on line at www.tamarcrossings.org. uk/ferryrefit-tamar/ I am sad to say this is my final Mayor’s Column, but delighted to advise Mayor Elect for 2019/2020 is Councillor Mrs Chris Goodman. Deputy Mayor Elect is Councillor Ms Rachel Tanner. Civic protocol dictates it is anticipated they will be voted into office on Thursday May 16 at the Council Chambers during the Annual Mayor Making Ceremony. I am sure they will make an excellent team to lead the council. Maureen and I would like to take this opportunity to say it has been both a pleasure and honour to have served Torpoint as Mayor and Mayoress for the Civic years 2017/2018 and 2018/2019, as well as Deputy Mayor and Mayoress for 2016/2017. During this time, we have met many amazing people, attended many outstanding events and enjoyed the company of lots of young people, who are the future of this amazing town. It is a credit to the huge numbers of volunteers who give their time on a regular basis to run so many clubs and activities that go towards making Torpoint such a great community! Being Mayor is not a one-person role, so I say a big thank you to my deputy, Councillor Mrs Chris Goodman for her help and support, the council officers for their advice and guidance and also the caretaking and cleaning team, who all work tirelessly behind the scenes. To my fellow councillors, thank you one and all for the privilege of leading Torpoint Town Council. We have come a long way in a short period of time and we should all be proud of our achievements. I am confident we will continue to work as an effective team with Councillor Mrs Chris Goodman at the helm. Regards Lambert and Maureen

Tough time for rowers Torpoint Rowers Club hosted the last in the Tamar Winter League series of regattas on April 14 in challenging race conditions. Seven clubs took part - Torpoint, Caradon, Rame, Tamar & Tavy, Cotehele, HMS Raleigh and RM Tamar. Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions the Under 16s race was cancelled but the other six races went ahead without a hitch. Torpoint Rowers Club has grown from a small group getting out on the water as and when they could to a fully fledged Cornish Pilot Gig Association club, entering regattas throughout the year, travelling all over the beautiful counties in the South West to compete. Gig rowing is a fabulous inclusive activity and anyone wishing to try it will always be very welcome.
Rame secure third place in league Rame Gig Club have hosted their own Winter League regatta with good conditions for the row out to the start towards Fort Picklecombe, and then the race back into Cawsand Beach. Six out of the 10 invited clubs took part, and Rame youngsters did themselves and their club proud again by winning the U16s
race. First place in Men’s A, and second place in both Men’s and Ladies Vets meant that Rame finished a healthy third for the regatta, just one point behind Tamar and Tavy in the overall standing. This meant that a good performance at the Torpoint regatta (see above) would clinch a third place overall for the Winter League so this was a target to aim for. The day came for the Torpoint event with strong winds blowing onshore to the little beach in front of The Old Rowing Club. As some crews struggled to safely get out onto the river, the decision was made to cancel the juniors race. The rest of the club realised that a huge effort to keep points low was needed by all, and the combined points from all crews that day secured the third position overall - great teamwork, and well done Rame! The first wooden gig regatta of the 'summer'
also took place in April in Dartmouth. A new event - the Masters for 60+ year olds is a welcome addition this year as there are so many fit older rowers who still love to compete and race. Other news around the club includes the purchase of a new gig car which will finish off the smart look together with the new trailer and the beautiful new gig which arrived in Cawsand from Harry Poulson in Looe just before Easter. Check out www.gigrower.co.uk for further information on the new gig Spirit of Rame, and the full Tamar League results. The focus is now on the World Pilot Gig Championships in the Isles of Scilly between May 3 and 5. Rame have crews competing in the Supervets and Main events and all involved are excitedly looking forward to it. Rame Gig Club welcomes new members to the rowing and/or fitness suite sections of the club. Membership details can be found on the website: http://www.ramegigclub. com. Feel free to get in touch with the club via the contacts on the website, or via our active facebook page, especially if you want to 'Have a go at a row'.

Becky Greenwood, who manages the Acute Assessment Unit at Derriford Hospital was the guest speaker at the April meeting . She explained that the unit offered options instead of hospital admissions. Professionals come from different departments such as occupational therapy and physiotherapy, along with GPs and representatives from social care. There is also a Frailty Unit that specialises in the ‘General Person’. There are no beds, just chairs in the unit and improvements are frequently made to improve the service. When a gentleman highlighted that he had not been offered any refreshments it was decided that a tea trolley would be provided with food and drinks. Twiddle Muffs are another innovation to calm nervous patients. They see about 70 patients every day and this includes 30 patients from the emergency department which helps save valuable bed space. The strawberry tea fund raiser will be on June 26. Members contributed towards a stall to raise money for Chloe - a three year old who has suffered sudden paralysis in her left arm - and raised £155. The next meeting is on May 15 at Sheviock Memorial Hall when members will discuss the resolutions to be presented at the annual meeting in Bournemouth.

President Nancy Dunstan introduced the ‘Plymouth Maids’ who are lady clog dancers who have been performing to the public since 1980 so they will be celebrating their 40th anniversary next year. They were accompanied by three male musicians who made the evening really entertaining. Members were given a brief history of clog dancing where they were told it originated in the north of England where clogs were actually worn in the mills. The group have performed in festivals even as far away as Russia, often dancing in the streets. The red white and blue costumes were very eye catching with the white aprons embroidered to each lady’s choosing, also hoops, sticks and bells were featured in the dances prettily decorated in the same colours. Members were shown several dances done in groups of six or eight dancing to various tunes such as ‘The Barbican’ and ‘Cross the Tamar’. Volunteers were asked to learn a dance with the Plymouth Maids which at first caused great amusement as they battled with the steps but they did extremely well as they became more confident. It was a very happy evening for everyone. Mary Cooper gave details of a Group Meeting to be held by Maker with Rame on July 13 to celebrate their 65 years as a WI. Sue Hale updated members on various trips, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at Devonport Playhouse, a visit to Hendra Farm and and Calendar Girls in the Theatre Royal on August 1. The evening ended with a handbag search which was devised by Jean Morgan, causing great hilarity as members rummaged through their bags to find various items which ladies do surprisingly keep in their bags. The next meeting ‘A Taste of the Punjab’ is on May 22 at 7.30 pm in St James Church Hall and visitors are always welcome.

WILCOVE MEMBERS GO POTTY! It’s been a busy few months for members of Wilcove WI. At the recent annual meeting Sue Hillman was re-elected as President and the group was able to thank members leaving the committee and welcome those joining. This was followed by the 69th birthday lunch, held at the recently re-opened Windy Ridge Restaurant in Trerulefoot – an excellent choice for value and quality. Eleven members recently had a thoroughly creative and enjoyable time at the Rame Barton Pottery. They were expertly guided by potter Paul Cardew with a hands-on introduction to throwing a pot and in creating dishes and vases using rolled and decorated clay. At a second session, a fortnight later, they returned to glaze their creations and were all delighted with the final products after firing. The speaker at the April meeting was local beekeeping expert Jo Widdicombe, who gave a fascinating insight into the complex and sophisticated lives of bees and the work of beekeepers, plus an overview of his important work to improve the resilience of honey bees. The May meeting is at Cove Hall, Wilcove on May 21 at 7.30pm. Members will discuss the resolutions to be put to the national WI meeting in Bournemouth in June and also provide members with information about some of the forthcoming events including a guided walk, fused glass workshops, and even a picnic on the beach!

Torpoint Bowling Club welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress of Torpoint Councillor Lambert Keise and his wife Maureen on Saturday April 13.
The Mayor kindly bowled the first bowl for the 2019 season, congratulating the members on their efforts in keeping the green and grounds in such good condition. The club’s new president Roger Toms said a few words outlining the past president’s charity efforts which helped the club obtain a defibrillator from Heartswell, along with contributions to two of the town’s Brownie groups. He said that in the coming year he would be raising funds for Heartswell as well. The club also raised £158 from the opening day’s lunch and raffle which has been donated to the local McMillan Nurses to help support cancer patients. The club have a club night every Friday evening throughout the summer at which they welcome anyone who would like to try the game of lawn bowls. So why not come along from 5.30pm and see if it’s for you?
Trusting God as the anchor in our life Today I am writing this at my desk in bright spring sunshine, the trees outside are all in blossom and there are green shoots and new life. Spring springs forth everywhere which is quite amazing, bearing in mind the recent variations in weather, with the chilly days following on from warm and sunny, and flash floods alternating with dry spells. It is very difficult to tell what season we are in. But nature, as always has responded well, because plants and trees have a good root system and therefore what happens on the surface is only a small part of their existence. As humans we should take a lesson from nature by developing good roots in our faith and being sound and secure in our knowledge of our creator God. Because whatever blows us around on the surface, we need to know that God is our anchor and will keep us secure. In fact quite often while we are being

blown around and washed away from the problems we face, or scorched by the heat of life, we have to hold onto God even tighter than normal and the outcome is that we discover that our strength and faith has grown. So whatever is thrown at you from others, from life, or from the world, just remember to spread your roots down deeply to God and to hang on. Be strong and faithful and God will be faithful and you will find new growth and strength to resist the storms of life. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” Lamentations 3:22–24 A literal and constant reminder of how the Creator’s love and mercy are new each morning, regardless of whatever has gone on before.
