raised should be returned to the community and Tesco decided to introduce a community grant scheme called Bags of Help as a way of doing this. The grant scheme is managed and promoted by the Federation of Groundwork Trusts and has been very successful to date with thousands of projects being carried out all over the UK which have benefitted millions of people. Any community group, residents groups, Friends of organisation, educational establishment, club or charity is eligible to apply for a wide range of initiatives with the only exceptions being religious and political based causes and regular costs at animal rescue sanctuaries.
A large audience assembled at Ashtorre Rock on Monday July 3 to watch a demonstration on the use of a defibrillator. Following the demonstration, the new defibrillator, which is mounted on the outside of Ashtorre Rock’s entrance gate, was officially unveiled. Present at the unveiling were representatives of the organisations that raised the funds to purchase the defibrillator - Ashtorre Rock and Saltash Rotary Club. Mr Bill Phillips, President of the Rotary Club of Saltash, cut the ribbon and the defibrillator is now available for use by the general public in the Waterside area.

Capital (one-off) and revenue projects are eligible but the staff and running costs of organisations are not. The grants are between £1000 and £4000 and are available 6 times a year in each Tesco grant region. The local region is Callington and covers the whole of the Rame Peninsula, right over to Looe and the south east parishes of Bodmin Moor. Previous winners in Cornwall have included community gardens and orchards, gig clubs, therapy centres, beach, countryside and conservation work, for sports equipment, programmes of visits, educational activities, parks and school grounds. Applications are all made via this website www.groundwork.org.uk/Sites/ tescocommunityscheme and a Groundwork South Community Enabler is available to help with your enquiries. IN BRIEF
SALTASH JOB CLUB
July 22, building on the success of similar events in Tavistock and Totnes. The collections have always been very well supported by the public and the group would like to give their warmest thanks to all who donated in Saltash.
Groundwork South is a charity working in South East Cornwall, including Saltash to provide tailored support to people who are seeking employment. Achievement coaches provide free information, advice and guidance to support the move into sustainable employment, with continued support once a person is employed. The benefits of coming to the job club are gaining support to improve skills and employability and working together to explore job seeking activities. This includes developing individual action plans, helping to create targeted CVs, preparing for and developing interview skills and where appropriate sign-posting to local support services and appropriate training courses. The Job Club links with the Community Enterprises PL12 and is being held at the Community Hub, 4 Fore Street, Saltash.
AMNESTY
AT WORK
The Plymouth Branch of Amnesty International carried out its first street collection in Saltash on
The fundraising activities enable the group to send donations to the National HQ of Amnesty to help in fighting for justice for people suffering threats, abuse, false accusations, imprisonment, abduction and other forms of oppression. One of their main activities is letter-writing on behalf of these people; during the first six months of 2017 they had sent over 80 of these to heads of government, their officials and embassies in the UK. A typical case is that of Shawkan, an Egyptian photo journalist who was arrested, beaten and imprisoned for taking photographs during a peaceful sit-in protest against the deposition of Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president. Shawkan has been held in prison since 2013, but has still not been charged with a single offence. There are, sadly, too many cases like this around the world, but thanks to the generosity of the donors, Amnesty can make a difference. More information at www.amnesty.org.uk The local branch can be contacted via email at jebbs2@waitrose.com

Can you help the Town Council with the Saltash Station building?
The Town Council has already received significant interest from a number of individuals who are willing to help the Town Council with its ambitions to refurbish the former station building. Some have specific skills, and some want to help us fund raise. The Town Council welcomes anyone, whether individuals, groups or businesses who may have something to offer the project. The Town Council want to not only keep costs to a minimum, but deliver a project that
has significant community involvement. The Town Council is meeting with local architects over the coming weeks, who we hope will engage with the project. We are also seeking funding from Cornwall Council and Great Western Railway, both of whom are very keen to see the project progress. This is a real opportunity to help out your community, whether you have specific skills such as being a buildings expert, IT specialist or are a Project Manager, or just want to donate some time to help out. Alternatively you might want to help us fund raise or setup and manage a Crowd Funding campaign. If you would like to participate then please contact us at the Guildhall with as much detail as possible on what you can offer.

Community Enterprises PL12 is holding a special event on September 27 at the Guildhall from about 6pm (details later). Put this on your calendar now, and come and join us for it. Our Annual Meeting follows the event, all welcome. We are an ambitious local organisation, and have ideas

Feel free to contact our Chair Peter Thistlethwaite on 07813 890416 to discuss things informally or email: chair@communityenterprisespl12.co.uk We are really keen to bring new local talents into our work.

VICTORY FOR RON!
A love of the sea stays in the blood, it seems, no matter how many years go by. This is certainly true for Ron Le Blanc and his wife Margaret, who have continued a labour of love, after receiving an outstanding naval model of HMS Victory as a present for Ron’s retirement from his final place of work. “It took a little longer than expected,” explained Ron, who retired in 2007. Ron had nursed his wife through two hip replacements and a further knee replacement in 2014, and had suffered a perforated appendix himself. However, undaunted, the couple persevered. Ron, who had joined the Navy aged 14, and gone on to serve in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the Merchant Navy, had also been a senior Shipwright combined trades apprentice in the Dockyard during his working life. The skills he learnt there came in very handy in constructing his own mini vessel. “There are three layers of planks to give the hull
strength,” Ron continued, “with a final layer of Sapeli hardwood which is varnished. The spars and masts are made of beech, and the boats, anchors, embrasure covers, gunwale racks and 104 cannons are reproduced in metal.” “The sails were painstakingly hand made by Margaret, and we had to create several tools from scratch to get to grips with the fine detailed nature of the work as well as improvise – for example using wooden sugar stirrers as hand rails.” “The model was completed on June 3 2017 taking approximately 3276 hours – seven years of pure pleasure and satisfaction,” beamed Margaret, clearly delighted by her husband’s achievement. HMS Victory was the flagship of the Royal navy during the Battle of Trafalgar under the command of Lord Nelson. It is the oldest commissioned warship in the world, launched in 1765 and restored in 1922 in remembrance of its great Admiral.

TACKLE & BAIT CLOSES DOORS Love Saltash salutes the entrepreneurial spirit of ordinary folk who take their hobbies that one stage further.
Martin Harrison was a former scaffolder for 28 years, but has fished all his life in and around the area. It was this love of the sport that persuaded him to set up Saltash Tackle and Bait just over four years ago. Martin has been a keen participator in local life, sponsoring the St Mellion Senior Golfers, the Fossils, and donating fishing rods and kit to Scouts groups in the area. He has also been part of the Ambassador Scheme, as a bona fide collector for the RNLI, and epitomises Saltash’s deep links with the waterside. It’s with a mixture of sadness and regret that he recently announced his intentions to sell up shop.

“Despite being able to employ someone part time, I was finding myself spending seven days a week in the shop – there was no time for me to go fishing anymore!” said Martin wistfully. “In a business like mine, you have to be able to see yourself through the quieter times during the winter, and unfortunately, for a small business like me, this was becoming increasingly difficult. I do think I will be missed; and I will certainly miss the enjoyment of sharing my experience with customers. “I’m also hopeful that the Pontoon will be fully open to fisherman soon, as you get such good rewards fishing off there when the conditions are right. We do need controlled areas for fishing on the waterfront so we can all enjoy ourselves safely.

YOUTH VOICE By Rose Bonner, Secretary of Saltash Town Youth Council and student at saltash.net community school.
FOUNDATION HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER
It is no question that Saltash has a lot to offer for the youth which has certainly been recognised this month. The Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation is one Saltash based charity that offers many opportunities that perhaps would not be possible without their support. The Trust which has six local Trustees was founded in aid and support of the promotion of Music, Drama and the Performing Arts in all its forms and disciplines.
Over the past 17 years the SHCF has raised and donated many thousands of pounds to local young people. The Trust’s objects are to administer funds to young people and ensembles that have a special interest in the performing arts. The Foundation has donated valuable funds to assist students in advanced studies with purchasing musical instruments (violas, violins, saxophones, flutes, drums, tuba, trumpets, and sets of musical instruments etc.) In addition the Foundation has funded composition software for young composers, and West End of London auditions and theatre workshops in Saltash, London, Edinburgh and venues all over the UK and parts of Spain. Funding has been given to local vocalists,
pianists, choirs, bands, theatre groups and individuals to advance their performing arts endeavours. With students given principal roles at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, West End show lead (Billy Elliot), and other parts of the UK.
Richard Waters, a talented local violist that has benefited from the SHCC has made music his career. Richard has had principal roles with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestra of Opera North. David Doidge a local pianist supported by the Trust also has made music his career and is an accomplished pianist with the Welsh National Opera. David has worked with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and performed with top classical vocalists and musicians. More details of the work of the Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation can be found on the Trust website www.suehcf.org.uk

STUDENTS CELEBRATE Students have celebrated an incredibly successful year and raised money for charity at a special celebration. Cornwall College Saltash has held its annual celebration of success for Access to Higher Education students. The evening celebrated the success of the current students in what has been another exceptional year. It was also an evening that welcomed back alumni, who spoke about their successes at university and beyond. Student, Melodie Benson, said: “It was a fantastic way to celebrate our achievements and hard work throughout the year”.
“Our other chosen charity, Shekinah Mission, is a charity that provides support, including accommodation, employability programmes and a drop-in service. This support is given to those that are homeless, have mental health illnesses, recovering from drug and alcohol issues and ex-offenders.” “We are all really pleased to support these charities and the amazing work they do.” In total over £600 was raised on the evening through donations and a raffle.
Each year Access students choose a charity to raise money for throughout the year. Two charities were chosen this year; Ellie’s Haven and Shekinah Mission.
“We are extremely proud of what our students achieve every year. We have exceptional staff and students at Cornwall College Saltash and we are already looking forward to another brilliant year of learning from September,” she added.
“Ellie’s Haven is a charity that provides free holidays, within their specially adapted property, to families and carers with children that have long term or life limiting illnesses,” Melodie continued.
For more information on the range of Access to Higher Education courses available at Cornwall College Saltash visit www.cornwall.ac.uk or contact the College on 0330 123 2523.

FITNESS NEWS
Words by Emily Hunt
Best Personal Trainer in Cornwall Award for Jay Curtis of Jacks Gym Jay Curtis is one of those people who you imagine to jump out of bed with a smile on his face before his alarm has even gone off. For members of Jacks Gym it comes as no surprise that Jay has been voted Best Fitness Instructor in Cornwall in the highly competitive Muddy Stilettos awards. Customers themselves cast the votes, marking Jay’s popularity as a personal trainer and fitness coach. Jay was up against over 150 nominees in the Cornwall region, only five of which made the finals. Jay won the award in June this year much to the delight of all who have worked with him.
The reviews on Jacks Gym facebook page are testament to the service they provide the Saltash community. For me, the gym’s community ethos is also reflected in the members. Not once have I encountered cliques or negativity. People of all shapes and sizes, ages and abilities take part and support each other. One of these members is Sarah who employed Jay as her personal trainer last July. Since then she has lost six stone, undergone a hip replacement and ran her first ever 5km race. Jay helped her with an exercise plan in preparation for her operation and for her recovery.
Jay told me: "I can now brand myself as an award winning personal trainer. It has promoted my career which will enable me to do even more of what I do and I now have something to show for the 10 years of hard work I've dedicated within this industry. Hard work does eventually payoff’.
Twelve weeks after her hip replacement, Sarah went for her first run with Jay. She says, ‘Jay is brilliant! He’s encouraging and non-judgemental. He has a fab knowledge of what he does and is person centred! We have a laugh while he pushes me!’
Jay has been part of the Jacks Gym family since it’s opening in October 2015. He tells me his move from a corporate gym to Jacks Gym was one of the best decisions he’s ever made. "Of course any new business is hard work, but in this role, every day has it's positive challenges. The end result is clear, we have created an atmosphere like no other here at Jacks Gym. You won't find a friendlier, more sociable and fun atmosphere integrated into a gym. We have our members and staff to thank for that!"
Lee Russell, founder and managing director of Jacks Gym said: "Jay is not only a valued member of staff, he’s a great friend. He’s a genuine, down to earth guy who is always coming up with new ideas. He’s supported me with the business from day one and his commitment to our customers is outstanding." 17 Moorlands Lane, Saltash, Cornwall @JacksGymSaltash 01752 846689

COMMUNITY NEWS
THE GIRL GUIDES NEED YOU!
Girlguiding events, adventures and regular meetings empower girls to be their best and become confident women. In Saltash, we have a total of 11 units. We all meet in our Guide Headquarters off Warfelton field. We have three Rainbow units (aged 5-7), four Brownie units (aged 7-10), three Guide units (aged 10-14) and a Senior Section unit (aged 14-25) which meet over five afternoon/evenings during the week. Rainbows is exciting, messy, friendly and a lot of fun! It’s a space for girls to try new things with girls their age. Being a Brownie is an adventurous journey that girls take with their friends as they discover the world together. Guides challenge themselves to get out there and so something different – and they
make friends along the way. The Senior Section is all about taking action and pushing your boundaries – learning to lead, travel and use your voice. CORNWALL COUNCIL NEWS

MEET your cornwall Councillor: SAM TAMLIN
Four Cornwall Councillors were elected in May to represent the interests of Saltash at county-wide level. They were Derek Holley (Saltash East) Sheila Lennox-Boyd (Saltash North), Hilary Frank (Saltash South) and Sam Tamlin (Saltash West). In this issue we profile Sam Tamlin who was standing as a councillor for the first time in the May elections. Sam was born and raised in Looe, where his parents ran a local Spar store. After leaving university Sam joined the family business. After the death of his father, Sam joined Appleby Westward in Saltash, working in IT and sales. He and his wife Kim have lived in the town for 10 years and Sam admits that he had never been involved with politics until his daughter Abigail was born three years ago. They also have a one year old son Luke. "Having children made me think a lot more about what the future holds for them and I felt that I wanted to play a part in hopefully making life better," said Sam. Liberal Democrat Sam started canvassing in September last year and knocked on literally hundreds of doors, meeting local residents and finding out more about their concerns. "It was a bit nerve-racking at first," said Sam, "but I enjoyed lots of positive conversations." Sam is a stay-at-home dad, which gives him plenty of time to read up on council matters. He is a member
of the East Sub-Area Planning Committee and the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee.
"It has been a steep learning curve and I am really enjoying the role," said Sam. "There is no doubt that Cornwall faces some massive challenges in providing services at a time of severe financial restraint. "Adult social care in particular is a huge issue for the county and for Saltash. We are expected to provide increased levels of care at a time when budget cuts are being made by the Government." He said that healthcare and infrastructure issues were particularly pressing for Saltash, following the closure of the minor injury unit and in-patient ward at St Barnabas Hospital. "With the proposed development at Broadmoor Farm we have to ensure that the town can cope with the increased pressure on education, roads and healthcare." There is a Cornwall Council Surgery every Saturday morning at Saltash Library between 10am and 12 noon when one of the four councillors will be present to discuss any concerns or talk over suggestions. Recently we came across the following advice from the brilliant website, www.totallylocally.org, if we all switched just £5 from our weekly shopping at supermarkets, chain stores or online to an independent business in our town, this would make a huge difference. Not convinced? Saltash has a population of just over 16,000 at the last census. If we add a few extra adults in from our neighbours, we might reach a figure of 8,000 adults. If every adult took this simple £5 action that would be over £2million pounds more being spent with independent businesses in a year. Whilst you ponder this thought, here is a poem from the same website, www.totallylocally.org. They call it their Manifesto.
The fantastic community businesses in the following pages are all based locally, and your support means the world to them.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are legal documents enabling your chosen attorneys to manage your affairs and make decisions, if you are not able to do so. Should you be unfortunate enough to have an accident or lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a Lasting Power of Attorney would be invaluable. You are not legally obligated to have a LPA in place, similarly there is no obligation to have a will or a life insurance policy, but if you don’t, things could be very difficult and expensive for your family and loved ones.

KEAST MEWS
KEAST MEWS SPOTLIGHT This month we are beginning a tour of some of the interesting nooks and crannies of our lovely town, celebrating the unique owner led businesses that we find there, and letting our readers know just what bargains can be had by just popping along in between picking up your essential bread and milk. In fact prices, cheaper than what you would find on the high street, or online, are far more common that you would expect!
This month it is the turn of Keast Mews, a lively development just off Fore Street and within a popular walk through from one of Saltash’s easy to use and reasonably priced public carparks. Owner run independent businesses offer the customer the best advice and expertise. You will get all their years of experience in their field, combined with a genuine and obvious desire to treat you, the customer, well enough, that you will want to come back.

BLOOM HEARING IS A BLOOMING SUCCESS IN FORE STREET Who knew that behind an ordinary shop front in Fore Street lies a veritable Tardis of a thriving local firm made big. Bloom Hearing Specialists now have 23 branches across England and Wales, and a presence in assorted clinics, bringing the total amount of its premises to 50; but has chosen to keep its Head Office in Saltash where it all first started. The original founders niece, Sadie Brain, is the Hearing Aid Audiologist at the Saltash branch. “I am the third generation of my family now working with Bloom,” says Sadie, “and we have 26 employees

EXHIBITION OF ART
The ‘Ashtorre Artists’ group has once again transformed the upstairs space at Ashtorre Rock, Saltash into an impressive gallery for their annual summer exhibition of art which opens its doors to the public at 10am on Saturday August 26 and continues each day for a fortnight.
works. Pupils from Bishop Cornish and Burraton Primary Schools enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to display their artistic creations in the context of an established exhibition and to explore the theme of Flotsam and Jetsam with some very interesting results.
The group was originally formed by artists John Forster and Richard Allman in 2009 when the goal was to create 150 images of the Royal Albert Bridge by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in celebration of its 150 year anniversary. In successive years the group of local artists has explored various other aspects of the gallery’s stunning river’s edge setting beside the bridge here in Saltash and used this as source material for producing both literal and abstract interpretations of waterside subject matter.
As well as being presented with a wealth of creative endeavour described above, visitors to the gallery will also be able to ‘have a go’ at making art for themselves by participating with others in recreating a painting from a well-known artist. It is an opportunity to observe, in detail, a small portion of the work and, with guidance from a steward if required, give one’s own interpretation to it. In so doing the identity of the original will eventually be revealed.
This year the theme is ‘Tidelines’ which is described in the Oxford English Dictionary as “a line left or reached by the sea on a shore at the highest point of a tide”, and you are invited to view how each of the twelve artists in the group has addressed the subject to find innovative and inspiring visual interpretations through the media of drawing, painting and printmaking. Alongside Ashtorre Artists own responses, and to extend the scope of the exhibition again this year to include other members of the Saltash community, two groups of young artists are also exhibiting their
The twelve Ashtorre Artists are; Richard Allman, Jill Coughman, David Gamblin, Jane Jones, Jo Rowland, Chrissie Russell, Eleanor Russell-Hsieh, Viv Screech, Marianne Sturtridge, Beryl Underwood, Chris Waring and Rosalie Wyatt. Keep Cool In Your Conservatory This Summer
ARTICLE BROUGHT TO YOU BY GREENSPACE
One of the great joys of summer is sitting in the conservatory enjoying the garden, however, once the sun comes out, for many of us, our conservatoires morph themselves into mini ovens which make them unbearable to sit in. There are lots of different ways to keep cool in the summer, but how do you know what’s the right option? Here at Green Space Conservatory Roofs, we are helping our customers to enjoy their conservatory – whatever the weather.
How Do We Do That? In 2010 the planning laws were relaxed and in the majority of cases, you can now fit a solid roof to your conservatory without planning permission. This means better insulation,
keeping the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, and a room that you can use all year round. We replace conservatory roofs with roof panels that are lightweight and offer eight times better insulation than a polycarbonate roof. With U-values of 0.29, they will keep your conservatory at a comfortable temperature all year round meaning that even at the height of summer, you will be able to sit in your conservatory without having to resort to stripping off or sitting on top of a fan! What’s more, the panels are manufactured to measure off site, so installation generally takes less than a day, and we always aim to ensure that your roof conversion is as non-disruptive as possible. We are the sole supplier of this system in the South, our system is compatible with most conservatories, old and new - plus it comes with a ten year guarantee.

£200,000 boost for saltash station Well over £200,000 has already been raised towards the cost of refurbishing Saltash Station, according to Richard Bickford, who is chair of the council's Station Working Group. It is estimated that a similar sum will be required to complete the project - but Richard is optimistic that this will be secured in the next few months. "We are confident that we have identified sources of potential funding for the project," he added. “This may well include Crowdfunding.” He said he was hopeful that the station project would be completed in around a year's time, depending on the planning process and build phase.
Richard Bickford in the cab of the new train
"We want to engage with local residents who may wish to help with the project - whether it's fundraising, painting and decorating or other activities," he said. "For example, if there is a building surveyor who would be willing to donate their time to provide a condition survey that would be really helpful." The developments at Saltash Station come at a time when GWR have announced the introduction of a new fleet of Intercity Express Trains between Paddington and Penzance from 2018. Nearly 30 of the Class 802 Hitachi trains will operate in either five, nine or 10 car formations, carrying significantly more passengers than current trains. One of the new fleet recently visited Devon and Cornwall - travelling over the Brunel Bridge on its way to and from Penzance.
"We have already started discussions with architects and will also be looking for assistance with the development of a business plan to help with the funding bids ," he added.
Richard said that as a regular rail passenger himself, he was looking forward to the arrival of the new trains.
Depending on the final plans, the new station building will feature a waiting room, café and other facilities for passengers and the local community.
"I actually had the chance to see one at close quarters while it was at Plymouth Station and was even invited to try the driver's seat," he added.
