IN BRIEF

Eva’s LITTLE STARS

murder mystery Burraton Community Players have announced their programme for 2017, which kicked off with a fun quiz on February 25. Over the years the players have made a feature of their ‘murder mystery’ evenings with bloodcurdling plots, fantastic twists, dubious humour and a pasty supper . A new murder mystery evening with the working title, ‘Murder Behind Bars’ will be presented on Saturday June 3 at Burraton Community Centre.

Saltash based charity Eva’s Little Stars would like to thank a range of local people and organisations for their recent support. Founder Averil, pictured above being presented with a cheque from Community Enterprises PL12 by Rosie Waters, set up the foundation in 2015 to help local families that have suffered the loss of their baby through stillbirth. The charity aims to help a little by giving a one-off payment towards flowers, headstone and other items. As well as Community Enterprises PL12, invaluable support has come from the Nuffield Trust through donations made at cake sales and raffles. Local fundraising heroes Sue and Jeff at Petit Pain Cafe on Fore Street have also played an important part in the continued work of Eva’s Little Stars, with their monthly donations. To find out more about how you can support Eva’s Little Stars, including attending their table top sales and fairs, contact Averil on 07800 830880.

The group will break new ground with their 26th pantomime, ‘The Case of the Purloined Pantomime’ which for the first time will be presented before Christmas rather than in January or February. The original script, which may or may not pay homage to Conan Doyle, will be performed at Burraton Community Centre on December 14, 15 and 16. The group is always looking for new members actors, singers, dancers, backstage helpers — the more the merrier and all ages from 10 to 100! To find out more call 01752 842109 or see the Facebook page or visit www.burratoncommunityplayers.co.uk

council elections Saltash residents are being encouraged to make a difference - by becoming a town councillor.

saltash.net crowned u16 girls’ Cornwall Cup champions

Elections for all 16 seats on the Town Council take place on Thursday May 4 and information sessions were held at the Guildhall on February 16 for those people interested in becoming a councillor. The elections will be for both town and Cornwall Council seats and nominations must be made no later than 4pm on Tuesday April 4.

PILMERE Tree SURVEY Saltash Town Council now manages large areas on the Pilmere estate, which includes some but not all the trees. Last year the council’s contractors did carry out a tree survey and some were made safe. The council has asked residents who have an issue with any trees which they think might be unsafe or are overbearing on their property to contact the council. Residents should contact the council direct at the Guildhall with their details and a photo of the tree or trees if possible.

community litter picks Community litter picks will be taking place on Sundays in February and March. The first will be on Sunday February 26 at 10am. Meet at the green field bordered by Broad Walk and Lynher Drive. The next will be on Sunday 26 March at 10am. Meet at Pillmere Green.

The under 16 girls’ football team from saltash. net have been crowned County Champions after successfully defeating Richard Lander School in January. The 2-1 victory ensured that the under 16 crown remained with saltash.net, after last year’s under 16 squads success in 2016. Goals from Eleri Griffiths and Megan Seymour secured the victory. The win means that saltash.net has won three of the last four girls’ under 16 Cornwall Cups, having also captured the title in 2014. The team, coached by Mr Lee, battled fantastically in the face of extreme weather conditions, and got their reward for consistently excellent displays through the tournament. A huge well done to the whole squad, who are listed below: Back row (left to right) Emily Congo, Dani Spurling, Ellen Procter, Kera Mitchell, Chloe Price, Phoebe Northmore, Mia Reynolds and Mr Lee. TOWN MESSENGER Money Matters

Over the last few months, councillors and staff have been busy figuring out how much money will be needed to continue providing services to the community of Saltash over the next financial year. We’ve already taken over management of public toilets from Cornwall Council and there are other assets we are looking to take on, too, like the Waterfront, so there is plenty to work out. We’ve also been busy figuring out how much will be coming in. We estimate an income of £46,875, as shown in the pie chart. Saltash Town Council also receives £28,591 in Central Government Council Tax Support Funding, so that brings our total projected income to £75,466. The difference between our projected income and our projected expenditure of £684,139 is the amount that Saltash Town Council will need to receive from the Council Tax. This is called the precept and it amounts to £608,673, which is a 1.6% increase over last year. So that means that last year, the Council Tax amount per Band D dwelling, for example, was £114.45 and this year the Council Tax amount for that dwelling will rise to £115.99. We will now send that information on to Cornwall Council, who will collect the tax on our behalf by adding it on to their Council Tax bill.

Sign the St. Barnabas Petition! Councillors were stunned to learn that the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust had decided to close the wards and the Minor Injuries Unit at St. Barnabas Hospital for 3 months from February so that nurses can be temporarily redeployed to Liskeard Hospital. Outpatient services will continue to be provided at St. Barnabas throughout the temporary closure, but the Town Council is still dismayed that the

Waterfront Plans Eagle eyed residents will have noticed that the pontoon at Jubilee Green is missing! Don’t worry: it will return within the next few months. And when it does return, it will be in tip-top condition, having been completely refurbished. Saltash Town Council has agreed to fund part of the refurbishment, and intends to take over management of the pontoon from Cornwall Council when it brought back. Berths will be available for rent, and visitors will be welcomed to the town, for a reasonable fee.

needs of Saltash residents are being neglected: it is unacceptable for a town of our size to be deprived of such vital services. Residents clearly feel the same, as there have been queues to sign the Council’s protest petition. You can sign the petition, too. Either at the Guildhall (open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm) or at the Spring Fair of the St. Barnabas Hospital League of Friends, which will be held between 10am and 12noon on Saturday 18th March in the Guildhall. Councillors will join members of the League of Friends at their Spring Fair, so come along and talk about your concerns and ideas regarding health and care services in Saltash. This is part of Saltash Town Council’s long-term vision to encourage and develop access and use of the Waterfront area. As part of this, we are appointing a Waterfront Warden to manage the pontoon and the adjacent Boat Park. If you are interested in using the Pontoon or Boat Park, please pass your requirements in to the Guildhall. Councillor Richard Bickford, who has been coordinating the project, said: “It is exciting for the area. Our short-term goals include extending the strings of festive lighting and improving the footpaths and paved areas. We are looking to provide benches or picnic tables, and might even be able to set up a bandstand or performance area.”

honours system Saltash Town Council welcomed Rear Admiral Mike Wood CBE, Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall, to February’s Full Town Council meeting to talk about the honours system.

Essa Drama School of Saltash have been celebrating their overwhelming success at the recent Saltash Music Speech and Drama Festival. Dozens of pupils entered into the verse speaking, duologues and solo drama, prose reading, prose speaking and team speaking classes. Drama practitioner Kaye Bonner said : “All the children were delighted to take part in the Festival. It has been such a wonderful experience for them to participate. “Many of the children were awarded trophies for their work, which was a bonus for them, as the School’s ethos is about taking part and enjoying the experience rather than expecting to win trophies. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to the

The honours system recognises people who have made achievements in public life, committed themselves to serving and helping Britain. Recipients have made life better for other people or have been outstanding at what they do. Anyone can nominate someone for an honour but only exceptional individuals actually receive an honour. The honours are decided by an honours committee, whose decisions go to the Prime Minister and then to the Queen, who awards the honour. The Deputy Lieutenant said: “Historically, the proportion of people from Cornwall nominated for an honour is quite low, and the Lieutenancy is keen to ensure that all those in Cornwall who deserve an honour have the chance of being given one”. Mayor Hilary Frank said: “Since becoming Mayor, I have been humbled by the huge number of people in Saltash who consistently give so much to the community. I am sure there are many of our citizens who deserve to be recognised in this way”, and urged fellow councillors to make nominations. languages day

Saltash.net hosted its second annual International Languages Day on February 6. Pupils from eight of their Multi-Academy Trust primary partners (Landulph, Bishop Cornish, Brunel, St Germans, Sir Robert Geffery’s, Burraton and Dobwalls) joined them for the day to celebrate the Chinese New Year as well as discover Asian cultures and languages.

She said: “We have had such a great time. It is the fifth primary day I have taken part in and they are just getting better and better. I feel really confident now sharing my passion for languages and teaching the primary pupils. It’s a great feeling knowing that they are enjoying themselves.” Hilary Frank, Mayor of Saltash, joined them for the day to run Japanese workshops and give the students an opportunity to try on authentic Kimonos. The children were fascinated to find out Hilary had lived and worked in Japan as a Japanese interpreter for the Olympic Games, the FIFA World Cup and even for the Japanese Emperor himself! International co-ordinators and organisers of the day Melanie Carr and Elodie Tremellat were very impressed with the students’ enthusiasm for foreign cultures and languages. They remarked: “Not only were the children incredibly inquisitive and keen to learn about different cultures, but they showed great teamwork skills and were a credit to their schools and our community in and around Saltash.” A pupil from Landulph said: “When I came in this morning I was very nervous, but now I am having a really great time and I definitely want to come back to saltash.net next time for more cultural fun.”

As a special treat the school invited Hanban teachers (professional Chinese teachers) Dongping Chen, Jian Huang and Liang Kan, who ran some superb workshops, including Chinese morning exercise, calligraphy, Chinese New Year blessings, paper cutting, Tai-chi and Chinese sports. They were assisted by 20 saltash.net students Language Leaders who also ran Chinese and Japanese language and culture workshops for the primary pupils. Tegan Lynch in Year 9 has been a Language Leader for two years.

STUDENT

REPORTERS

Students welcome new Head Teacher There has been a major change at the top of saltash.net! We have a new Headteacher, after sadly saying goodbye to Isobel Bryce after 14 years in charge. But we have said a big hello to our new Headteacher, Kate Littledyke. Ms Littledyke has been with us for six years, so we all know her very well. She has been an excellent Head of English, and also a wonderful Assistant Head, but now she has taken the top job at saltash.net. Ms Littledyke came through a strong field of candidates who also wanted the role of Head Teacher. Ms Littledyke was interviewed by our school council as part of the interview process, an experience she described as enjoyable but rigorous! Mrs Bryce was a wonderful Head Teacher. She was open to charity fundraising ideas, mufti days and she was always willing to put the students first. The reaction of saltash.net students to Ms Littledyke’s appointment is one of excitement and anticipation. “I think Ms Littledyke was a wonderful English teacher but she will be an even more fantastic Headteacher,” said one Year 8.

“I think there will be some changes, but for the better, to make our school even stronger” said another. While one student added, “I’m excited to see what changes she makes but I hope she doesn’t change too much!”. Whatever 2017 brings, we look forward to a long and successful new chapter in saltash.net history with Ms Littledyke in charge.

15

Assistant Headteacher swoops in to saltash.net As well as a new Headteacher, we are welcoming a new Assistant Headteacher, Lee Howgate, who takes over Ms Littledyke’s former role in charge of Learning and Teaching. We asked him how it feels to cross the Tamar and switch to saltash.net. When interviewed by Isobel Whittam, he revealed his main aims for the year are to build on the strengths of an already successful school, and develop greater consistency in students’ learning. On a lighter note, we asked “If you were an animal what would you be and why?”. Mr Howgate revealed he would be a falcon, as they are fascinating and get to live in beautiful places.

Smarter with smartphones One thing that makes saltash.net different to many schools is the fact that we allow phones for research and students’ use outside lesson time. This enables students to feel safer as if they are walking home they have a way to contact somebody. Using phones in school can also help learning and teachers have many ways of preventing distractions. Some of the teachers have phone ‘prisons’ and others lock them in a drawer if students are seen using them for the wrong reasons. We also have a rule which means all phones must be on silent or they are taken away until the end of the day. We find that phones can have a great use, whether it’s for use as a calculator, a thesaurus or dictionary, an internet search, or for educational games when there aren’t enough laptops. There is research that proves that one-to-one devices can improve people’s learning. This is one example of how saltash.net is a school that thinks creatively about technology. The sky is the limit with saltash.net! Student Reporters: Corlissa Waites, Jasmine Sutton, Rosie-May Smith, Isobel Whittam, Trinity James, and Olivia Sissons. Editorial Coordinator: Isobel Whittam.

ADVERTORIAL

Dorothy’s loving life at Edgcumbe Court

Situated in Stonehouse, Plymouth, with wonderful views overlooking The Sound, Edgcumbe Court is a new high quality development of retirement apartments. Recently residents held a dinner to celebrate their first year anniversary at Edgcumbe Court which included a toastmaster, music and champagne! One former Saltash resident has been chatting about her move to Edgcumbe Court. Dorothy Pidduck was born in Saltash, moved to Devon, went back to Saltash and is now back in Plymouth! From her new apartment she has a lovely view of Plymouth Sound and Mount Edgcumbe. She is happy to be living in Devon …while still looking at Cornwall! Dorothy was already living in a retirement flat when she saw the advert for Edgcumbe Court and knew instantly that it would be better suited to her needs. She mentioned this to her son Malcolm, who by coincidence had just started working at Edgcumbe Court. He quickly arranged a site visit. Dorothy was very impressed, particularly with the location which offers beautiful walks along the promenade in front of the village and the stylish range of social and leisure facilities and support services, In Communal Living Room

addition, since moving in, she has found an excellent bus service to the City Centre & Derriford, and the staff on site 24 hours a day ‘who will do anything for you’ have become very valuable benefits. Her new apartment is warm and cosy with energy efficient underfloor heating, fully fitted kitchen and wet room shower room. It is a lovely bright private space and has accommodated much more of her furniture that she had anticipated. She especially enjoys the spacious lounges, coffee bar and conservatory area where she can chat to her neighbours and enjoy their company. There is also a quiet library and a stunning summer house with views of Plymouth Sound. The residents have organised their own programme of social events. Dorothy reveals that a big incentive for her to make the move was the beautiful restaurant at Edgcumbe Court. The chef prepares a delicious three course lunch for residents and their guests every day. Dorothy says she has definitely made the right decision and appreciates the freedom her new life gives her. When asked if the assistance of the support staff and laundry/cleaning service had made her life easier she gave a big smile and laughed ‘oh goodness, yes!’ For more details on Edgcumbe Court telephone 01752 229534 or email sales@edgcumbecourt.co.uk

smart students impress ambassador Ministers from a number of countries in attendance at the annual BETT Show in London were given the expert opinions of Year 7 and Year 9 students from the Saltash Multi Academy Regional Trust (SMART). The BETT (British Educational Training and Technology) show, which took place at ExCeL London, is the largest exhibition in the world that focuses on the role of technology in education. Members of the Multi Academy Trust attended for the second year running, following the visit of saltash.net and Landulph students in 2016. Students from Liskeard, Looe and saltash.net gave a confident and informed performance, with the Romanian Ambassador to London describing their presentation as, 'an amazing demonstration of how much education has changed and how much we need to catch up as adults.'

He described the experience of being presented with a business card by Holly from the Tech Team in Year 7 as, 'truly remarkable.' Technology company Siveco had visited saltash.net earlier in the year, meeting the students. They were so impressed they agreed to cover the total cost of the trip. As lead programmer Marius put it, 'a wider audience needs to see how skilled these guys are.' The students were joined by Dan Buckley, joint CEO of SMART, who presented alongside the students. After returning from BETT, he praised the students. He said: “I was both proud and inspired to see students from across the MAT working so well together. Most adults would find this difficult enough in their own place of work but to perform at the BETT show to ministers and ambassadors from all over the world is exceptional. SMART is well and truly on the map!

YOUTH VOICE From L to R: Jemima Budd, Ellie Wanless and Ellie Kavern

Students use Youth Speaks to shine light on mental health Saltash.net hosted the first round of the 2017 Rotary Youth Speaks competition in January. Held in the school’s lecture theatre, the event saw two saltash.net teams enter. The teams were Ellie Kevern (8LS), Ellie Wanless (9JY) and Jemima Budd (9JY), and Molly Willis (9JY), Jasmine Leslie (9JY) and Tegan Lynch (9JY). The winners were Ellie, Ellie and Jemima with their speech: do we really talk about mental health enough? The judges felt that it was a very current topic for today’s climate. They proceed to Mount Kelly College on February 22. Jemima led the team well with a powerful opening statistic about it taking a decade between the first symptom of mental health and treatment.

Ellie Wanless delivered her six minute presentation well, opening the audiences’ eyes to a variety of mental health illnesses and concluding that we could all make a change by supporting local charities like the Samaritans. Ellie Kevern concluded with a powerful vote of thanks where she reiterated that, on average, one in ten young people are currently suffering in silence.

YOUTH VOICE By Rose Bonner and Philippa Rule – JointSecretaries of Saltash Town Youth Council and students at saltash.net community school.

CELEBRATING THE COUNCIL’S VALUABLE SUPPORT FOR YOUTH WORK Saltash Town Council has supported many youth organisations in Saltash. One organisation that has been helped by the council’s support is Livewire Youth Project. With its grant to pay towards professional youth work, Andy informed us: “This money has helped us to support young people through open access evening sessions where young people can drop in for an informal chat, get music lessons and meet with their friends. The funding has also enabled us to continue working with and supporting the school. Without the funding, we would not have been able to support young people in our local community.” The council has also contributed to the success of The Core, as Charlotte stated: “The Core Youth Project has received funding from Saltash Town Council. The money has enabled us to develop the services that we provide for young people. The Core is still in its infancy, and we could not have responded to the needs of local young people without the funding and support from the council. We can now offer a range of activities and services such as 1:1 advice and guidance, four open access youth sessions per week and drop-in

sessions at saltash.net, to create a youth project with activities running alongside professional youth work.” Another organisation that the council has benefitted is Junkyard Skatepark. It is a ‘service using bmx, skateboarding and scootering as a tool for young people to thrive’. Stephanie, the co-founder of the skate park told us how Saltash Town Council has benefitted their organisation through professional youth work funding: “This has enabled us to run two Youth Club Nights, charging only £1 entry fee, which has made it affordable for everyone to use. We have also been able to get safety and sports equipment. We have a great team of professional youth workers onsite – Saltash has a dynamic youth support scene and we are very proud to be part of that.” Saltash Town Council has and will continue to benefit youth organisations in our community; as can be seen here, its funding of professional youth work in the town is ensuring that targeted support continues to meet the needs of young Saltash people.

U3A voice

U3A Photography showcases members talents

The annual Saltash U3A photography and photoshop exhibition was held, as usual, in the Saltash Library Gallery in January. There was an eclectic mix of 24 photographs which were replaced after two weeks with different photographs. The exhibition is always well received and serves to show the talents of the members. Next year the exhibition will be held in March, so make a note in your diary. If you were unable to visit the exhibition this year the photographs will be shown on a moving display at the U3A Showcase on March 9.

The Showcase gives members of the public the opportunity to see all the activities available at Saltash U3A and is held at Saltash Wesley Church from 2pm until 4pm. All are welcome to ‘drop in’, partake in refreshments and ask group leaders any questions that you may have. Whatever your talent or interest you will be certain of finding a group that interests you. We conduct our monthly meetings on the second Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m. at the Wesley Church, Callington Road.

Saltash U3A was founded in September 2006 as a result of the enthusiasm of local people who had had experience of U3As elsewhere and has steadily grown ever since. Its membership has now reached more than 260 and currently runs over 30 activity groups ranging from Art to Ancestry, Music to Walking, and Theatre to T’ai Chi. Saltash is a member of the Tamar Valley Network.

student news (L-R): Lecturer David Galphin, Chloe Spear, Ben Thackery, Charlie Walters, Lecturer Chris Penk

Cornish students triumph in culinary competition Three gold medals, a national final in London and work experience with Rick Stein were among the incredible achievements of Cornish students at a distinguished regional cooking competition. Professional Cookery students from Cornwall College Saltash took part in The Major Series South West regional heat, held at South Devon College. Former Looe Academy student Ben Thackery, 18, who is now studying Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, won the Cold Skills category and revealed “at first I didn’t believe the result”. “I felt quite calm leading up to the competition then just before it started I suddenly felt quite apprehensive. It’s the first competition I have been involved in, and wasn’t too sure what to expect. We all supported each other on the day giving each other words of encouragement, for us all to win gold in each of our categories was fantastic”. The competition, sponsored by City & Guilds, is a national competition with four heats across the country open to junior and senior student chefs of varying skill levels providing students with seven different classes to choose from. Former Liskeard Community College student Charlie Walters, 16, competed in the Major Two Course Challenge requiring him to prepare, cook and present

a two course menu comprising of a main course and a desert within 90 minutes. “It was a fantastic experience, I was really nervous on the day. I’m quite competitive and I like to win so I wanted to do my best. My mum came to watch, which was a great support. I work part time at the Sail Loft in Looe and it was great to go back and tell them my result,” Charlie explained. Fellow student, Chloe Spear, 16, who was previously a student at Combe Dean School, found the competition experience “completely surreal”. “I was quite surprised at how nice the judges were, they helped to try and put us at ease. Having to undertake all the tasks live in front of them and present two dishes one for photography and one for tasting was nerve wracking. I feel really lucky to have this experience during my course at Cornwall College Saltash, the lecturers have all been really supportive.” “After the competition one of the judges offered me work experience at Rick Stein’s in Padstow which was the icing on the cake!” To find out more about the extensive range of Professional Cookery courses available across The Cornwall College Group visit www.cornwall.ac.uk or call 0330 123 2523

Plymouth and Cornwall Air Cadets celebrate ATC Sunday Royal Air Force Air Cadets and staff from squadrons as far afield as Okehampton and Hayle paraded through Saltash on Sunday February 5 in their annual celebration of ATC Sunday. The ATC is now in its 76th year and is proud to have as its patron, HRH The Duchess of Cambridge.

Association (and Deputy Lord Lieutenant) and Wing Commander Francis Reis, Officer Commanding Plymouth & Cornwall Wing ATC.

The parade, led by the Plymouth and Cornwall Music Service Band, marched to the parish church of St Nicholas and St Faith where the service was lead by Prebendary Brian Anderson, Chaplain to the Plymouth and Cornwall Wing of the Corps.

The day of celebration was tinged with sadness as it was just some two weeks before that the ATC had met at St Stephen’s Church in the town for the funeral of civilian instructor Chris Tandy who died at the age of 24. Chris was a professional traffic planner and his negotiations for the traffic orders for the parade were cut short by his untimely death.

En-route to the church, the salute was taken by Colonel Edward Bolitho, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. He was accompanied at the saluting base by the Mayor of Saltash, Hilary Frank, the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Pauline Murphy, Air Vice Marshall Garry Tunnicliffe, Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Personnel Capability), Group Captain Mike Trace, Vice Chair of Wessex Reserve Forces and Cadet

However, Wing Commander Reis was delighted that the event went ahead as planned thanks to the determination of his parents, Eva and Chris Tandy, the Mayor of Saltash, Cllr Hilary Frank Cadets and staff and the staff and cadets fill St Nicholas and St Faith’s at 335 (Saltash) Squadron Church plus some flexibility on the part of Cormac, the highway authority. ATC Sunday will be held at a similar time next year but at another church within the Wing.

Awards night marks successful year for the Tamar Trotters

Simon Yeo and Rebecca Ezra have been honoured with the top awards at the Tamar Trotters Running Club’s annual awards evening for 2017.

hope to build on over the next 12 months, with new training programmes and activities already proving a hit with our members old and new.”

After outstanding years, which saw Simon selected to represent the Cornwall cross-country squad and Rebecca being the first lady to finish in races across the South West, the pair were named the Male and Female Runners of the Year respectively.

The positive vibes of the awards evening are reverberating through the club at the moment, with the launch of a new training programme at the start of the year having a positive impact on runners of all ages and abilities.

The awards were held in the stunning surroundings of Pentillie Castle, and were a celebration of the whole club’s achievements over the past 12 months. These have included numerous athletic and social successes, as well as the staging of the ever popular Saltash Half Marathon and Magnificent Seven races in and around the town.

Winners Simon Yeo and Rebecca Ezra

Alan Williams, chairman of the Tamar Trotters, said: “The awards evening was a great way to celebrate our many successes of 2016 and to reward all the outstanding individual and club achievements. All our winners have earned their awards through a combination of hard work and determination, while having fun at the same time. That is something we

The Friday night sessions for complete beginners are increasing in popularity, having for many years provided a stepping stone to get people into running. More than 60 young people from Saltash and the surrounding areas are attending the juniors sessions held each Wednesday during term-time at Saltash.net Community College.

And preparations are also in full swing for the club's two flagship races of the year, the Saltash Half Marathon on Sunday 30 April and the Magnificent Seven on Sunday 16 July. For more information about the club and its activities, visit www.tamartrotters.co.uk.

JUNKYARD SKATEPARK

STEF nurding Words by Stephanie Tambling

Stef Nurding model and action photos courtesy of Lucien Harris

Junkyard Skatepark recently asked professional skateboarder and Devon local Stef Nurding to come over to Saltash to have a chat with some of the students of saltash.net. Stef, who is sponsored by Vans shoes, has her own online store called Salon where she continues to break the stereotypes of skateboarding and style.

need to wear more masculine clothes, embracing the ‘tomboy’ style in order to fit in, however Stef says this is an outdated stereotype. The students felt this too with social media being just one of the factors behind it, however, Stef wants to encourage us to ignore these conventional ideas and to be confident within yourself.

On a mission to share this, Stef did a presentation to the students on a number of subjects, from the challenge of being a woman in such a male dominated sport, how she got to where she is in the industry today to what impact fashion can have on skateboarding. Some females feel the

local skateboard school. Thanks to the Skateistan project, skateboarding has become the number one sports for girls in Afghanistan. Despite being a female orientated presentation, chosen to empower and encourage more young girls and women to take up the sport, there were male students present at the talk. It’s always encouraging to see them supporting their female peers and they even came up with some valid points themselves, during the presentation. It was great to see the students of saltash.net engaging and motivating their peers.

Junkyard Skatepark would like to say a massive thank you to Pete Bond for setting up the session and Stef Nurding for coming along and inspiring the students with her fantastic presentation. We hope to see more young females taking on the sport, especially with it being so great for their confidence, wellbeing and a fun form of exercise. We run a monthly girls night, held on the last Monday of every month, and we’d love to see more girls and ladies join in with us. Find out more about Junkyard Skatepark at www.junkyardskatepark.com

THE CORE

Getting to

Words by Charlotte Carpenter

the core

of youth work The Core Youth Project is now firmly into its second year of opening and is going from strength to strength. This is hugely due to the young people who are attending and getting our name firmly on the Saltash map! They have some amazingly dedicated young people who are so willing to help fundraise, volunteer and generally shout loudly about the work they do! For many, the work they do may still be unknown and for that reason they are taking the opportunity not only to celebrate our achievements but also to let you know what support there is on offer for young people at the centre. The Core have recently been looking at developing their website and wanted to come up with a strapline that encompasses the work they do there, and in the end they decided to keep it simple,

The Core Youth Project – ‘where young people come first’ The Core felt this was at the heart of what they do, there isn’t one particular activity which they are known for, what they do is respond to the needs of the young people by putting them first. There are a whole host of activities on offer at the centre, from boxing, climbing, fitness, media groups, youth nights, volunteering and art, all of which attract young people from many different walks of life. By providing the young people with choices and encouraging them to try new things they grow as

individuals and become more confident as a result. An essential part of what The Core offers is professional youth workers providing 1:1 support, advice and guidance to young people who may just need that extra bit of help. They also provide this service at Saltash.net, working with them to run their TicTac (info and support) sessions during lunch times for students. The Core is particularly proud of their Youth Committee who formed last summer and consist of a group of nine young people who represent young peoples views and organise fundraising events. Last year they secured £500 in funding from Young People Cornwall to set up their own film events. They undertook thorough research on licensing to show films, types of projectors to buy and suitable films to show. They also worked as a team and chaired their own meetings with the support from the youth work team in partnership with Young People Cornwall. To date they have shown 4 films, the most recent in February half term when 40 children came! It was a huge success and the committee set up their own sweet shop and there were also volunteers in our café serving the parents coffees and feeding all 40 children once the film had finished! If you want to find out more about their programme of events please go to our Facebook page or call the centre and speak to Charlotte on 01752 843176. The website will be up and running soon…..watch this space!

MAy FAIR

may fair Saltash May Fair returns to the town centre once again on Saturday April 29 for an incredible day with superb entertainment and lots of things to see and do for all the family. Saltash May Fair Committee are incredibly happy to bring the event back to the town centre again this year after its successful return in 2016. Building on the success, the committee have decided to introduce professional staging to accommodate larger acts and to give an aspirational quality to younger performers. In fact, the committee are hoping that there will be three stages throughout the event: two smaller stages in Fore Street and one large ‘main stage’ in Longstone Park. The Saltash May Fair in 2017 is being organised by the committee of three: Vera Forbes, Tanya Hatch and Matt Coot. They are joined by a contractor, Aaron Monk of events management company Diverse Events. Sadly, the committee lost a hardworking and much-loved member at the start of the year. Chris Tandy, who sadly passed away at the start of January, worked hard with the committee to bring the town the superb event in 2016 and was working, before his death, with the committee this year too. The committee miss Chris and will, unofficially, be holding the event in his honour. A percentage of proceeds from the raffle will be donated to a charity chosen by Chris’ family. “Three areas of entertainment will make sure that we can have a jam-packed schedule that everyone can enjoy,” said Vera Forbes, Chair of the Saltash May Fair Committee, who has been working tirelessly alongside her team to provide the town with a day to enjoy. “From solo performers just starting out, to community groups belting out their repertoire, to a large jump jive band who will get everyone on their feet dancing to their beat!” “We also have an extremely funny comedy troupe coming down from Bristol to perform on the Saltash May Fair stages,” added Matt Coot, the committee’s secretary. “We’ve not had comedy acts at the Saltash May Fair for many years, so it will be a fantastic addition.”

35

There will of course be dancing around the May pole from various local dance groups, the traditional Parade of Youth led by a civic parade, and stalls that will spread throughout Fore Street and into Longstone Park. The nostalgic Saltash May Fair remembered from years gone by will combine with a modern update to bring the town an event to be proud of. “None of this would be possible without the financial support of our sponsors,” said the committee’s treasurer, Tanya Hatch. “We want to thank everyone who has contributed to the May Fair. Without you, this event wouldn’t be possible.” The main sponsorship has come from the Saltash Town Council’s Festival Fund and through Section 106 funding, which supplies funds to projects that increase footfall to the town centre. The ‘silver sponsorship’ has been granted by Waitrose through their Community Matters project. ‘Bronze sponsorship’ has been given by Rallidae Productions, a new production company in the local area who will be present to film the events of the day and to audition members of the public for a possible starring role in an upcoming web-series. Other sponsorship has been received from the China Fleet Country Club and DB Autos. The committee will be continuing to advertise for sponsorship up until the day of the event. “Most importantly, we hope to bring together the community of Saltash in an event that the town can be proud of,” Vera Forbes, said. “Despite our team being small, we are planning an event that ensures Saltash stands out as a glorious gateway to Cornwall and a place where we are all proud to live.” If you would like to join the committee to plan next year’s May Fair, or even volunteer to help with this year’s event, please let the committee know via the email address: mayfairsaltash@gmail.com or by speaking with one of them on the day. new veterans group launch Dementia Voice PL12 have launched a Veterans Group in Saltash. With funding from Greenwich Hospital London, this new project is designed to help people who have served in the Armed Forces and who are in any way affected by dementia. The group will be held fortnightly at the Community Market at 4 Fore Street on a Saturday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. The first meeting took place on February 11. Minette Wright from Greenwich Hospital was on hand to officially launch the Veterans Group on January 28. The event was also attended by the Mayor Cllr Hillary Frank and her consort Shojiro Frank, together with representatives from local Armed Forces organisations and ex-service personnel who have been affected by dementia. An afternoon tea was served and thanks go to the local businesses and individuals who donated the lovely food that was enjoyed by everyone.

How to be Dementia Friendly If you deal with the public in a business or organisation, sometimes it’s hard to know how best to support customers and visitors who are affected by dementia. With over 500 people in the PL12 area affected by the condition, it is a very real issue in the town. If you would like to make your business or organisation more dementia friendly, Dementia Voice can help. The group’s two volunteer Dementia Friends Champions, trained by the Alzheimer’s Society, are keen to offer free dementia awareness guidance to businesses and other organisations in Saltash. Please call 01752 848348 or email info@ dementiapl12.uk for more information. And please step forward if would like to help out with this initiative – we are seeking to train more volunteers as Dementia Friends Champions. national trust

‘Spring is on the way; you can smell it’, say National Trust Gardeners

NATIONAL TRUST National Trust garden teams in Cornwall and Devon have just conducted their annual flower count for Valentine’s Day and what was most noticeable was how many scented plants are out in flower at this early time of year.

47

Hidcote. Some types of snowdrops and other early spring bulbs add to this annual attack on your senses producing subtle and beautiful scents.”

National Trust gardeners reported 1,737 plants blooming in this year’s 12th annual Valentine’s Flower count, 34% down on last year’s figure of 2,644. Although numbers are down on 2016, they are still higher than the previous three years. For the second year running, Saltram had the highest number of flowers recorded with 176 blooms (193 in 2016). The more normal and cautious approach of spring than in previous years does mean we can enjoy the early flowering plants for a bit longer as the cooler conditions will help extend the flowering season of the earlier blooms, this is reflected in the lower numbers in this year’s count. With later flowering plants on hold for warmer sunnier conditions Ian Wright, National Trust Garden’s Advisor in the South West said: ‘Our gardens are full of buds ready to burst into flower, but spring isn’t here quite yet, but when it does it will be a good one.’ “Alongside the usual signature plants of spring we are seeing such as Magnolias, Camellias and Rhododendrons, what is often over looked is the amount of plants that have highly scented flowers at this early time of the year. They’re all out there advertising their presence by pushing out scents like perfume counters in a department store trying to attract their insect customers, which are few and far between at this early time. “We have reports of Daphne, Mahonia, winter flowering honeysuckle, and Witch hazel to name but a few all of which give off sweet heady aromas and, are well out in flower at many of our gardens such as at Cotehele and

National Trust Garden teams in the South West have recorded fewer flowers in bloom than last year in this year’s annual Valentine’s Flower Count, with nearly all gardens showing a decrease in the amount of varieties of plants in bloom. Figures from the Met Office confirm that 2016 was one of the warmest two years on record. Such changes to our weather pose the single biggest conservation challenge to National Trust gardens and places. How we all garden whether in a National Trust garden or at home, what plants we grow and where may need to change. “Comparing the number of plants across our gardens on a set day every year gives us a real insight into how our gardens respond to weather patterns, and is a useful ‘barometer’ for the season ahead’, said Ian Wright, National Trust Garden’s Advisor. This year 1,302 plants were recorded in 18 gardens in Devon and Cornwall compared to 1,938 in 2016 and 1,345 in 18 gardens in 2015. In 2008 3,335 plants in bloom were recorded, marking the earliest spring so far recorded in Devon and Cornwall. Many National Trust gardens are already open in the South West. BUSINESS FOCUS

M.T. Grundy

Will Writers

M.T Grundy Will Writers offer a professional will writing service where instructions are taken and advice is offered in the comfort of your own home. The local, legally qualified will writing company offer advice regarding protecting your home from being used to pay for future care home fees.

Do I need a will? No-one likes to think about dying and planning what will happen to their assets, yet a valid will is one of the most important financial arrangements you can make during your lifetime and could save your family and loved ones a great deal of hassle and heartache when you die. If you die without leaving a will, all of your assets - property, savings and investments, bank accounts and personal possessions - will be distributed under the intestacy rules rather than following your wishes. These are your possessions, that you have worked so hard for, so why allow them to be distributed in accordance to the intestacy rules? Getting married, entering a civil partnership and having children are all important events that could prompt you into making a will. If you are unmarried, but living together with your partner, your partner won’t be entitled to any of your assets in the absence of a will. If you have children, what will happen to them when you die? Making a will enables you to appoint guardians of choice. Don’t leave things to chance!

Do I need a Lasting Power of Attorney? M.T Grundy Will Writers will also draft Lasting Powers of Attorney, which are becoming increasingly important. Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are legal documents enabling your chosen attorneys to manage your affairs and make decisions, if you are not able to do so. Should you be unfortunate enough to have an accident or lose the ability to manage your own affairs, a Lasting Power of Attorney would be invaluable. You are not legally obligated to have a LPA in place, similarly there is no obligation to have a will or a life insurance policy, but if you don’t, things could be very difficult and expensive for your family and loved ones.

Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today, call Anita Hutt LL.B (Hons) on 01579 344433 or 07971 280510 to book an appointment

HAUNT THE WOODS

LOCAL LADS cROSS THE LINE into prog-folk with new ep Left to right: Alex Skinner, Olly Bignell, Jonathan Stafford, Phoenix Elleschild

Prog-Folk outfit Haunt The Woods have had a pretty crazy track record over the past couple of years, having graced the stages of both Boardmasters and Port Eliot festival twice, as well as appearing various times on BBC Introducing and even once on Channel 4’s TGI Fridays back in 2015! New material has been slowly trickling out through their live performances for just under two years now, and those that follow them have been dying for something, anything new on their streaming services. Now the wait is over, as The Line has just been dropped on Spotify and iTunes, alongside smaller spaces such as Soundcloud and Bandcamp. Hailing from Cornwall and the Rame Peninsula, Haunt The Woods’ beginnings are closer to home than you might think. Jonathan Stafford, guitarist and lead vocalist, kicked off his music career through Livewire, Saltash’s very own home grown music youth project. He’s still a familiar face to those that both work and regularly attend, offering support to the project that in many ways

started the long, winding road of Haunt The Woods, which has finally lead to here. A hazy, mesmerising 5 track EP, The Line has been the first release from the young Cornish foursome for about two whole years, and it comprises of arguably some of the band’s best work. Combining solemn storytelling from Stafford with blisteringly fierce solo work from Phoenix Elleschild (lead guitar and vocals), the record feels more like a gloriously prolonged moment when listened through, evoking memories of feelings we’ve all experienced in the rollercoaster of love, and the subsequent loss that can precede it. Alongside on-point bass work from Alex Skinner and Ollie Bignell’s ever impressive percussion, the EP is as smooth as a single shot latte from your favourite barista joint. It’s great. In previous work, additions from Elleschild’s guitarship felt much more subtle, blending into the sound rather than completely

HAUNT THE WOODS turning it upside down - a change that can only have come from within the band itself. Jonathan Stafford revealed more on the subject: “We have this way of working where I write the track, my bit if you like, with all the dynamic and structural properties, then I’ll go to Phoenix to record it in our home studio and he’ll do what he wants to it. His part will kind of define sound of the track. That’s how it’s happened with the EP I guess, I’ve given him more of a free reign, and it’s resulted in us playing what we’ve always wanted to play!”

The closing track to the EP, a piano piece by the name of Lakeside, rounds everything off in a chillingly beautiful manor. The eerie hook of Stafford’s vocals at the chorus feels like a cool breeze on the back of the neck, throwing a chill down your spine. As a blissfully simple arrangement, it’s a wonderful experience, and deserves a top spot as one of the - of not THE - highlight of the EP. “We were in the studio in the evening and two of the guys had broken down on the A38 trying to get back. Phoenix, Pete (Miles, sound engineer and generally fantastic guy to work with, according to Stafford) and I were sat at the piano with loads of candles in the room. Pete likes to really set the mood.” “We just did a live take there and then in the studio and it was just perfect, just what we wanted from it, and after some overdubs and Alex on the bass that’s what ended going on the record! It’s a nice organic way to lay down a track.”

Little did we know it, but it was what we’d always wanted to hear too. The classic rock twist on the EP has undoubtedly catapulted the band into a whole new world of possibilities, adding both energy and euphoria to a mix that already had us on the edge of our seats. Elleschild knows when to hold back, though, as shown in hair-raising opener Beautiful Catastrophe, alongside later track Helter Skelter, where simple twinkly layers perch tentatively in wait whilst Stafford takes point to deliver two gorgeous performances. Both in their recordings and live performances, the band come together as one to create a solid sound that can only be achieved by a group of people that not only admire, but respect each other’s skill: “Olly first came in on the cajun and flute”, Stafford reveals. “Then we transferred it to a full kit - he’s only been playing for two years! I know I’m slightly biased, but he is one of the best percussionists I’ve come across, everything he does is perfect for what we do. Phoenix too - he’s only 20! He’s an absolute beast on the guitar.”

The sound Haunt The Woods have developed in this record is huge. Bittersweet narratives combined with an explosive, foot stomping set of climaxes makes for one of the most lovable local acts around. Each song unwraps itself predictably, but gratifyingly, resulting in a set of tracks that all hold themselves effortlessly, emanating an atmosphere that isn’t to be missed. The Line is a delicious blend of tender songwriting with a nuclear-powered set of ideas, talents and experiments, culminating in a body of work that is easily listenable, engaging, and pleasantly surprising. You can catch Haunt The Woods at festivals such as Glastonbury, Boardmasters and Port Eliot later this year, as well as on their tour, starting in late spring. A bright future for the guys at Haunt The Woods, it seems! “We’ll just keep making music we want to make and if people like it then great! If they don’t like it then…we’ll just keep making music!” Words by Joe Day
